A Time for Reflection…
EDITORIAL Editor-in-Chief Enas Hashani
Hajj transforms the bustling city of Jeddah into a microcosm of the world as pilgrims from around the globe pass through our city on their journey to Makkah and Madinah. The city swells with piety and celebration as millions gather in annual pilgrimage. Even if you’re not participating, you can’t help but become caught up in the excitement! This issue is loaded with Hajj stories and pictures as we share these blessed days with our readers.

Celebrate Eid Al-Adha with traditional meals and family time. This Eid is fondly known as ‘The Meat Holiday’, but if you don’t feel like cooking at home, select one of the steak houses from our Steak Review for a delicious meal. For those of you who’ve never tried ‘madfoon’ – make this Eid special with a trip to Balad in search of this authentic Yemeni dish. Or become inspired by reading about the talented Chef Yousef and his fusion of Eastern and Western cuisine.
Carol Keyrouz
If you feel like hitting the road during this nice winter weather, read about the natural beauty of Taif and the Shifa Valley in our ‘Explore KSA’ section. There are so many lovely destinations within a day’s drive of Jeddah, plus you’ll escape the Hajj crowds in the main city. If you have the time, splurge on a private jet holiday after reading about the merits of flying private vs. commercial. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do; gather your family and friends together for an impromptu vacation! Or simply spend your days shopping – our Fashion and Beauty pages are packed with tips to keep you feeling good and looking even better this month. Islam places a high value on intention… behind every good deed lies the initial good thought. As the days of Hajj and Eid unfurl around us, let’s unite with the intention to make Jeddah, in all its diversity and color, the most beautiful city in the Middle East to reflect this joyous time of spirituality. Ameen. Destination Jeddah is your guide to Jeddah and beyond… Enas Hashani Editor-in-Chief editor@destinationjeddah.com

Reader’s Feedback We’re always happy to hear from you! Opinions, stories, comments, feedback and suggestions from our readers are what made DJ what it is today. Dear DJ, I love your new look – very colorful and graphic! I also enjoy the way you are constantly innovating with reviews and sections that are informative to your readers. The pizza roundup and the fashion/style sections were both great. Loyal Reader Dear Editor, You recently published pictures of cupcakes named Goodies with a commentary which affects the reputation of our true products which are known by their famous quality. The images are NOT our products; unfortunately, there is somebody who used the name ‘Goodies’. Our company Goodies has two shops in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, one is in the area of Al Tahlia and the second in Stars Avenue Mall; our products are sold only in these two shops. Thank you. Goodies Dear Goodies, Thank you for drawing our attention to this issue. There is a long-standing cupcake store named ‘Goodies’/’Atayeb’ in Jeddah which specializes in cupcakes; this store supplied pictures of their products for our cupcake review. We apologize to our readers for any confusion between Goodies the restaurant and Goodies: Atayeb the cupcake store. Sincerely, DJ

Dear Dee, I think you’re referring to the sushi special offered by Ginza Japanese Restaurant in the Rosewood Corniche. It was an amazing deal! Rosewood: your loyal customers would like to see this special again! D.J
Dear DJ As avid readers of your publication, we would like to commend you on an outstanding publication. It’s a life line for many, especially non-Arabic readers!! We need your urgent help - a while ago you advertised an all-you-can-eat sushi special. I took an issue of DJ to South Africa and now my daughter is here visiting for 2 weeks and I would love to treat her to sushi as it is quite costly in South Africa. Can you forward me the info please? Thank you so much Dee Dear DJ, I came acrosss your magazine while visiting Jeddah recently, and I found it to be quite interesting. Very fresh and informative and dynamic! Thanks! Mayssa Please send to feedback@destinationjeddah.com

Thoughts
to Ponder Do your children watch too much TV? How much is too much? Rules certainly differ from family to family, but a sensible TV-watching policy for schoolage children is worth implementing. Studies show that children who have TVs in their own rooms are exposed to inappropriate shows and generally watch far more TV than their parents assume. Monitoring your children’s viewing is essential if you are concerned by negative peer or social pressures. Setting up some basic rules such as ‘No TV until you’ve finished your homework’ or ‘Only one hour of TV on school nights’ can give you peace of mind AND ensure that your child remains focused on academics during the school week. Without TV as an option, your children are free to explore other activities such as reading, cooking, puzzles, and other hobbies. On weekends, the lure of family and friends may prove more enjoyable than hours spent in front of the TV…so try limiting TV watching and see what avenues of exploration open up for your children!
Thumbs up to... MBC for Effective Self-Regulation
MBC channels are great in censoring just the right amount without affecting the show or movie. They have the latest and best shows, so it’s great letting the kids watch without worrying about what they are watching. It’s also convenient when you have company so you are not embarrassed if something inappropriate comes on! They have managed to do it just right, they even censor foul words/ language. We give them a big ‘thumbs up’ for all the hard work they put in to ensure that what we watch is familyfriendly. Thank you MBC! 8

Sexual Advertising We are disappointed to note that two popular sporting goods companies are using gratuitous and overtly physical imagery in their latest ads. Can’t they come up with more culturally appropriate visuals, not to mention refrain from using scantily clad women to market their products? Especially since they aim their products directly at the lucrative youth market? Companies should be aware of the unspoken messages clearly evident in their marketing campaigns. We expect more intelligent advertising in the 21st century.

Hajj: The Journey
of a Lifetime
“And proclaim the Pilgrimage among men: they will come to thee on foot and (mounted) on every kind of camel, lean on account of journeys through deep and distant mountain highways; That they may witness the benefits (provided) for them, and celebrate the name of God, through the Days appointed, over the cattle which He has provided for them (for sacrifice): then eat ye thereof and feed the distressed ones in want. Then let them complete the rites prescribed for them, perform their vows, and (again) circumambulate the Ancient House.” 22:27-29 Yusuf Ali Translation of Holy Quran The pilgrimage takes place on the eighth, ninth, and tenth day of the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar (November 4-7, 2011) and will be followed by the celebration of Eid al-Adha, also known as the ‘Festival of the Sacrifice’.
The Hajj is the 5th pillar of Islam. It is the annual pilgrimage to Makkah which is the journey of a lifetime – a spiritual, physical, and emotional journey which is the duty of every able-bodied Muslim man and woman. 22 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Hajj is the single largest religious gathering in the world – over 3 million pilgrims will be in attendance, all jostling to perform the rituals as laid down by Prophet Abraham over 2,000 years ago. Organizing the comfort and safety of so many people all crowded together into one small area is a logistical challenge which the Saudi government is constantly improving upon. The advent of the Makkah lightrail as well as several expansion projects serve to improve the congestion and overall quality of the experience for the millions of worshippers who gather from all over the world each year. While air-travel has eased the difficulties associated with the journey to Makkah… the actual Hajj rituals remain the same as laid down by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) 1,600 years ago.
Don’t let this step-by-step guide
The Steps of Hajj
fool you. Hajj is not just a to-do list, but a journey filled with mystery and grandeur. Every Muslim who has completed their Hajj is at a loss for words to describe the multitude of emotions they felt during their stay in Makkah. While Makkah remains a city open to Muslims only…non-Muslims can read extensively about the rites and rituals associated with Hajj online or from several excellent books on this subject which are widely available at Jarir Bookstore.
an overview
1. Be a Muslim who is physically & financially able to make the journey 2. Wear ihram (for men - two pieces of unstitched white cloth, for women – a modest outfit which completely covers the head and body, leaving the face and hands uncovered) 3. Tawaf (‘turning’ or circumambulation – circling the Kaabah counterclockwise seven times) 4. Multazam (recommended prayer) 5. Maqam Ibrahim (pray and remember Prophet Abraham) 6. Well of Zamzam (drink from the well) 7. Sa’I (walk briskly between the hills of Safa & Marwah) 8. Halq/Taqsir (shave head or cut off a piece of hair) 9. HAJJ: By Dilara Hafiz
‘Hajj’ means literally ‘to set out for a place.’ Worshippers have been setting out for the Kaabah in Makkah since Prophet Abraham and his son, Ishmael, constructed it almost 4,000 years ago. While the rituals evolved until Prophet Muhammad performed the Hajj in 631 CE with the first group of Muslims, the sanctity and spirituality of the place contain whispers of its historical significance. From the footsteps of Abraham to the majestic mountains ringing Makkah… today’s pilgrims are humble seekers following in the long traditions laid down by Muslims through the ages. The earliest Hajj saw crowds in the thousands. Today’s Hajj crowds approach 3 million and counting! While the expansions continue in order to accommodate the growing numbers of pilgrims, the piety and sincerity on the faces of the worshippers remains the same. The belief that Muslims only perform Hajj when they are called by God, the belief that performing Hajj fulfills one of the five pillars of Islam, and the belief that one’s sins are wiped away after a successful Hajj are all powerful forces embodied within the Muslim ummah (community). As world travel has facilitated the Hajj journey, Muslims from all corners of the globe mingle and worship side by side as they perform the rituals of Hajj. Although the earliest Hajjis were predominantly aged men, today’s Hajj sees the kaleidoscope of the world’s colors and ethnicities all together in the largest annual spiritual gathering anywhere in the world. Languages may differ, but the same words are on the lips of each pilgrim: “At Your Service, Oh Lord…At Your Service”

A 2008 study on the longer-term effect of participating in the Hajj found that Muslims’ communities become more open after the Hajj experience. Entitled Estimating the Impact of the Hajj: Religion and Tolerance in Islam’s Global Gathering, a study conducted in conjunction with Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government found that the Hajj experience promotes peaceful coexistence, equality, and harmony. Specifically, the report states that the Hajj “increases belief in equality and harmony among ethnic groups and Islamic community and that “Hajjis show increased belief in peace, and in equality and harmony among adherents of different religions” Muslim pilgrims pray atop Mount Arafat (AP photo/Hassan Ammar)

Grand Mosque Extension Project
King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, has laid the foundation stone marking the start of the largest Makkah expansion project in history. The SR40 billion project will increase the capacity of the Grand Mosque to more than 2.5million worshippers as well as incorporate new measures to ensure pilgrims’ comfort and safety. The new project, covering over 400,000 square meters in the northwest and northeast of the Kaabah complex, is the project of the century, said Muhammad Al-Khozaim, vice president of the Presidency for the Two Holy Mosques Affairs. Al-Khozaim also discussed the plans to expand the mataf (the circumambulation areas around the Holy Kaaba) and provide air-conditioning for all parts of the Grand Mosque, adding that the two schemes will be carried out shortly along with the new Haram expansion project. Abdul Mohsen Bin Humaid, Director of Projects, said the new project would be completed in a year and a half. The expansion will comprise three parts:

The Beauty of Taif, Al Shifa, and the Hada Valley By Fouzia Khan
Tucked up into the Sarawat Mountain range lays the beautiful city of Taif. Also known as the summer capital of the Western Region, Taif is rich in agricultural products and bountiful fruit gardens. It is a glorious mountain retreat which offers both natural beauty and opportunities for adventurous travel alike. It’s also the perfect base to visit the neighboring villages in the region.

Taif is almost 5,600 feet above sea level; while the towns of Al Shifa and Hada are even higher up the mountain range. Their cooler temperatures have made these locations traditional summer resorts for visitors from all over the Kingdom. This area has farms of honey, pomegranates, grapes, carrots, apples, roses, and vegetables in abundance. People who visit Al Shifa and Hada can have a taste of the crisp, fresh produce which is sold by hawkers from push carts alongside the mountain roads. The winding roads which cling to the mountainside also offer magnificent photographic opportunities. The city of Taif is located in the western part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and is administered by the Governorate of Makkah region. The most important roads are the Taif-Riyadh and Taif-Makkah-Jeddah highways which pass through the high Hada Mountains. Thousands of vacationers from the Kingdom and other Arab Gulf states spend the summer season in Al Shifa, Hada, and Taif resorts to enjoy their green scenery and cooler climates. People looking for relaxation or camping enjoy visiting Al Shifa. Located only 70-80 kilometers away from Taif, Al Shifa is a beautiful village in the Hada Valley full of forests, mountain views, and rich farmland. Outdoor picnics and barbeques are popular pastimes, as is simply soaking up the cool, fresh mountain air. More intrepid visitors

can enjoy exploring on camel-back or horse-back. There is an entire market set up for campers which will provide all the daily necessities; campgrounds fill up during summer, so advance planning is necessary. The resorts are open year-round. Al Shifa and Hada are located close to each other; Hada is the highest point in the Hada Mountain range. Between the Al Hada hospital and the Sheraton Hotel at the top of the Al Hada Mountains is a large nature reserve where monkeys are often spotted. Al Hada means ‘tranquility’ and this reserve of trees and plants is a true respite from the bustling cities. The cool mountain breezes allow visitors to forget the heat of the summer season; fog is even common in the early mornings and evenings. In winter, visitors marvel at the mistiness of the weather, although only experienced drivers should brave the roads under these conditions.

Awad Abu Salah: An Abstract Artist Awad Abu Salah is a Sudanese abstract artist based in Jeddah. As a young boy, he grew up surrounded by creativity: his father was a well-known poet and his brother an interior designer. Abu Salah began experimenting with colors in middle school, and from there, his journey as an artist began. In 1980, Abu Salah graduated with honors from the College of Fine and Applied Arts in Khartoum. Since then, he has had over twelve solo exhibitions and has participated in many group exhibitions, both within the Kingdom and abroad. He is also a member of several art societies, has been an art teacher for over twelve years, and has won many awards. His most recent award was received at the Souk Okaz Festival. The Souk Okaz Festival is a revival of the ancient Arabian festivals that date back to pre-Islamic times. It is a competition 36 DESTINATION JEDDAH
comprising various arts including painting, poetry, calligraphy, and dramas. The painters’ task was to choose a poem by a well-known poet and produce a painting based on this poem. Abu Salah chose a poem by Mr. Ghazel Gosaibi, and produced a piece done in the impressionistic style. When asked the name of the painting, Abu Salah replies, “The painting has no name. None of my work is named so that the person looking at it can interpret it in their own way.” Abu Salah reveals that he is inspired by life itself and that “…a true artist keeps his inspirations on file in his
head, and uses them when the time is right.” He explains that he was once inspired by drops of water from an AC dripping onto an advertisement in a newspaper. This not only gave him one idea, but several ideas for future paintings which he later won awards for. “An artist has an open mind, and sees things differently than other people do. That is a true artist.” His message to his audience is simply this: “I think what I want to say, my paintings say. I should not need to speak, my paintings should speak for me. I speak in colors and lines through my work. There is sadness, there is happiness...they all have to do with man. How he feels on the inside, how he feels on the outside…”
Abu Salah muses on the future of art and its role in society as he comments, “I hope people of the Arab world will take more notice of art, especially abstract art, because it is the key to civilization, culture and society. We know so much about civilizations of the past through the art that was left behind. Art is the TV screen of our time now, it will show people later what we have been doing. And I hope people will give more attention to the art in our religion. Old Islamic art was one of the most beautiful arts in the world. Our civilization had art within it, Arabic writing, before people even realized it. People should learn more and teach more about these things for the generations to come.”

SOCIETY EXHIBITION The Courtyard By Rayan Khayat
On an unsurprisingly humid Jeddah evening, the Courtyard was comfortably fanned and waiters were passing out cold refreshments. Photographs were displayed in the outdoor area, blown up and placed in glass frames, while indoors, sculptures, paintings and digital art were placed in horizontal rows on either side. An emotive piano piece was played on loop from a screen among the rows which was the exhibition’s only video piece. The show is the second exhibition from the larger Urban Art Show series titled Society Exhibition, which “aims to promote the concept that we are all obligated to act to benefit the society as a whole.” The pieces range from topical critiques to aesthetic appreciation and also familiar personal issues. A common theme in some of the works is the tensions between traditions and customs with modern developments. By using a slightly melancholic yet charming animated style, Sarah Abdali explained her paintings to be a reflection on what she feels the Saudi community is losing in favor of modern developments. Another artist with similar ideas is Salwa Zahid, who illustrates feminist issues by using vivid colors and adding fabric textures to the canvas. The cultural strain is a frequent topic among Saudi artists, which only proves its prevalence in the community. 38 DESTINATION JEDDAH
However it was interesting to see work that reflected something other than the problems of being a ‘modern Arab’ and went further. Swiss born Michael Bou-Nacklie’s photographs lean towards a photojournalistic purpose. He has captured notable instances in the community with his urgent and humanitarian vision. Bou-Nacklie photos are of real moments and he avoids editing and manipulation, he says that “finding a unique moment to photograph is the driving force all photographers want, we want to tell a story but we want to do it in a way that doesn’t take advantage of the access we have been given.” Abrar Hamidaddin instead works creatively to assemble scenarios that are aesthetically striking, joyful yet wistful with its nostalgic hues and vintage elements. And 17-year old Basma Felemban has created a series of mostly digital pieces which focus on the beauty and symbolic nature of the written Arabic word while lightly touching upon social concerns. With a combination of an earthy and muted jewel tone color palette, her minimalist works bring close attention to the undulating shapes of Arabic letters. Interestingly, the pieces that depart from culturally specific and Arab social themes happen to be the sculptors, who have focused on personal matters and ideas. Adil Khiyami uses silky bronze contours to materialize figures representing his family, mother and personal struggles. And firmly, Talal Altukhaes’s two complimentary pieces with black and gray stone revolve around the strain between personal strength and the chaos which distracts it. Similarly, Nora Almazrooa two toppled step pyramids evoke the yin and yang from a gender perspective. Adil Khiyami

Mr. Ramon Ros, Managing Director of TOUS, flew in from Barcelona to celebrate the new Tahlia Street store. There are currently 4 TOUS outlets in Saudi, with more being planned. The Spanish teddy bear has been embraced widely in the Gulf since 2007, currently available in UAE, Kuwait and soon Qatar. TOUS began its global expansion in Japan in 1996 and is now available in 45 countries. ‘Think global, act local’ is the fundamental concept adopted by TOUS, explains Mr. Ros, who describes TOUS’ market position as ‘affordable luxury’, basically ‘the Zara concept applied to fine jewelry’. Since spreading outside Spain, TOUS became more adaptable to consumer trends, clear in its 30 different annual collections. In 2000, TOUS widened its scope by launching watches, bags, shades and perfumes. Through each piece, the TOUS teddy bear displays its unique character. It was developed in 1985 when Ms. Rosa Oriol, 48 DESTINATION JEDDAH
wife of Salvador Tous, walked by a shop and glimpsed a teddy bear in the window, reminiscing childhood memories. Nostalgia is a key factor in the success of this icon; owning a piece of jewelry that holds this symbol of childhood often evokes pleasant emotions, and to some, even luck. The tenderness portrayed through the bear is evident when you walk into any of their stores, wear TOUS jewelry, or even spray on the brand’s soft fragrances. Latina pop star Jennifer Lopez is currently the face of this affectionate brand — her down-to-earth attitude and her popularity perfectly embody the Tous brand.

Super Chef Yousef Khumayes
The Perfect Blend of Ingredients Master of Middle-East Fusion By Dilara Hafiz
From the age of four, Chef Yousef could be found in the kitchen, experimenting with his favorite ingredients and leaving a trail of mess in his tracks! Luckily he’s honed his skills and with the launch of his new website www.chefyousefkhumayes.com, others can try out his recipes and judge for themselves – he’s certainly left a track of awards and accomplishments in his wake as an adult! Chef Yousef spent most of his childhood in Jeddah. At the age of fourteen, he and his family moved to the Irish capital of Dublin where he was able to pursue his passion for the culinary arts. His mixed background and international upbringing exposed him to a wide variety of culinary styles and techniques that he often blends in what he dubs ’Middle-Eastern Fusion’, something that is evident in his delicious, exciting, and surprising dishes. He has worked in leading hotels and restaurants around the world including The Four Seasons Hotel, The Berkley Court in Dublin, and The Elephant & Castle, among many others. After gaining a wealth of expertise in Europe, Chef Yousef moved back to the Middle East to apply what he’s learnt over 54 DESTINATION JEDDAH
the years. He entered LBC’s ‘Top Chef’ Middle East and quickly exceeded viewer’s expectations with two wins in the first six episodes, as well as creating four winning dishes out of a potential seven that have been added to the menus of international restaurants and hotels; a sandwich to the menu of Lina’s Restaurants, a dessert to Noura Desserts & Pastries Chain, a burger to Crepe Away Restaurants, and a breakfast dish to LeRoyal Hotel Group. The launch of his own website, which will contain many tools, tips, and aids for those with an interest in the culinary arts, will allow his fans to continue to be dazzled by his imaginative use of ingredients. The
website promises to be a leading resource in the Middle East, offering recipes, howto videos, Q&A, information for bookings, private lessons, etc. as well as much more. The public will also be able to sign up to receive newsletters that provide them with all the latest tips, Chef Yousef news, recipes, and videos. 1) What are you currently involved in (other than your website)? I am currently working as the expert chef for 3a2ilati.com, along with a lot of other exciting projects including a consultancy company for restaurants and businesses, a catering business, and cooking classes/ food seminars. I like to keep busy! 2) What’s it like being one of the few professional Saudi chefs in KSA? I am so proud to be one of the few professional chefs in Saudi Arabia, but I’m also aware that it comes with a responsibility, and I guess that’s what gives me the extra drive and need to help everyone to get to know healthy food and teach people to cook, whether it is professionally or for your family at home. At the end of the day… anyone can learn to cook. That’s what I’m trying to encourage people to do – enjoy cooking. 3) Can you share some of your personal/family life details with our readers? I have 3 brothers, my mom is Irish and my dad is Saudi from Jeddah. I am married and I have 2 little girls Layla Yousef (2years and 8 months) and Alana Yousef (1 month.) 4) What’s your favorite dish? I have a lot of favorite dishes because I’ve traveled around the world and tried a lot of interesting things like shark, kangaroo, ostrich, oysters, and more. I am a big fan of seafood and spring lamb.
5) Do you cook at home? Yes, I’m always cooking and trying new recipes at home, unless I had a really long day. But if you check and subscribe to my website or social network pages, you’ll regularly see some of the new creations I come up with. 6) Any advice for aspiring chefs? My advice for aspiring chefs is don’t be shy or embarrassed to be a chef, if it’s your dream or you enjoy doing it, keep it up and always be proud of what you do. If you enjoy what you do, you will be happy going to work every day. For more information: www.facebook.com/chefyousefkhumayes www.twitter.com/chefjoekhumayes www.chefyousefkhumayes.com

Rare, Medium or Well Done? By Yousra Elwi
Steak lovers are some of the finickiest food gourmets – there is no compromise when it comes to the cut of meat or the degree of doneness. It is either a mouth-watering pleasure or a crushing disappointment if the steak does not emerge from the kitchen cooked to perfection. Accordingly, restaurants serving steak have a meticulous checklist that requires profound expertise, but which of Jeddah’s steak restaurants live up to these expectations? When it comes to steak, the chef either makes or breaks it…
56 DESTINATION JEDDAH
OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE NEW
The most recent entry to the scene, Outback Steakhouse is a new American casual dining chain, its presence long awaited for in Jeddah after a lot of teasing from its branch in Riyadh. Like most American diners, steak comes as one section of the menu, in addition to pastas, chicken and seafood. Outback serves exclusive steak variations that can’t be found anywhere else; 7 steak plate options from which you can choose your preferred cut, portion, sauce and 2-sides accompaniment. The thick-cut Victoria Filet is one tender delight only found in Outback, but the must-try is the Outback Special, this flavored Sirloin piece is definitely a popular favorite! To spice up your meat, try their peppercorn sauce as the chef clearly knows the right ingredients for it.
LA CUISINE
With a taste of Paris, La Cuisine brings its guests an authentically French dining experience with all the trimmings. Widely renowned for its special ‘Entrecote Café de Paris’ menu, which is a full 3-course meal of salad, the sliced Entrecote steak with the scrumptious Café de Paris sauce accompanied with home-made fries, and a delectable dessert, La Cuisine successfully transports its diners to the actual L’Entrecote restaurant in Paris. Besides this classic French course, the menu offers several other steak plates that further reveal the cuisine’s specialties; the Chateaubriand is definitely a favorite steak plate at La Cuisine, as for the Filet de Charolais Foie Gras, it is exclusively ordered by those who are familiar with it and savor it. Mmmmm!
MONTEROSA
If you consider steak to be just another piece of meat and you are more concerned with the outing itself, Monterosa is definitely one of the top options. This lounge / restaurant offers steak dishes that are quite delicious relative to other similar venues; in fact, the Chef prepares the commercially popular Filet Mignon with obvious expertise. Aside
from the common Mushroom and Pepper steak sauces, Monterosa adds its unique touch by offering some creative sauce options, one of which is an interesting fruit mix sauce. So if you’d like to dine out in a place where shisha is available and steak is an option on the menu, Monterosa is your place.
RUBY TUESDAY
A favorite American chain famed for its fresh salad bar and flavorsome steaks, Ruby Tuesday has been serving premium quality, certified Angus Beef steaks that have gained quite a recognition amongst steak lovers. Whether you order Sirloin, Rib-eye, Filet Mignon or a New York Strip, it is guaranteed that your steak will be tender and juicy. As for flavors, this restaurant specializes in intense seasonings and bold sauces; a real full-onflavor experience is the Peppercorn seasoned Sirloin with Parmesan Cream sauce. Another plate that smacks your taste-buds is the Bayou Surf and Turf, which is Sirloin with Shrimps and Remoulade sauce. Steak at Ruby Tuesday is quite a heavy eat, deliciously loaded with flavors, but its worth it.
16 HUNDRED
The finest steak restaurant in town, 16 Hundred has gained a reputation of offering exceptionally prime steak in an ultramodern, upscale setting. Novel in terms of time and concept, 16 Hundred is a steak lovers’ haven and has clearly set the standard since it opened a few months ago. Finicky steak eaters will definitely appreciate the range of USDA steaks available at 16 Hundred along with the chef’s expertise in searing them. This is one of the few restaurants that actually serve steak mediumwell, unlike the majority of other restaurants that just can’t get it right. The Wagyu Ribeye is one tender pleasure for steak cravers, unsurpassed by any other steak restaurant in town. The sauces and butters assortment ensure that all preferences are met.

SPEARS
This is the ultimate treat for carnivores. With a unique Brazilian flair, Spears brings the country’s national steakhouse concept to cosmopolitan Jeddah. To be more accurate, it is more of a barbecue restaurant than a steakhouse; different meat types and variations are served directly off the actual spears they were barbecued on. As they land on your plate, your visual sense is highly stimulated before your tasting experience even starts. Whether the waiter is approaching you with a sword of lamb chops, beef kebabs or grilled lamb, the appearance of sizzling pieces definitely elevates your appetite. The lusciously tender texture of all their meats gives pleasure with every bite. As for the quantity, Brazilians seem to be quite generous; as long as you have the green side of your stick visible, your plate will constantly be refilled with whatever spears are going around. If you plan to dine in Spears, you should be really craving meat as it can be an overwhelming experience.
STEAK HOUSE
As the name implies, it is THE conventional American steakhouse that is spontaneously recommended when planning to go to a steak restaurant. As one of the oldest in Jeddah, Steak House is a safe option where you know you won’t go wrong; the quality is consistent, options are available, and the expertise is evident. Steak House 58 DESTINATION JEDDAH

is considered to be the healthiest steak restaurant in town with simply grilled fatfree options and a variety of fresh veggies available in the salad bar. In fact, it has special menu selections for those opting for a lighter, healthier meal. Besides, Steak House is one of the few restaurants where you feel you are getting value-for-money; items are reasonably priced and decently sized. Scrumptious flavors are also a specialty in Steak House; whether it is the meat seasoning or the side sauces, they clearly know how to mix their spices. If you are going out with family or friends and looking for a steak restaurant that will get a fair consensus, Steak House is your safest bet.
LE NOTRE
Initially known for its gourmet desserts, Le Notre surprises meat lovers in Jeddah with some of the most delectable steak dishes in town. When it comes to fine dining, Le Notre is just as gourmet as it is with its desserts; it offers a French fine dining experience with a multicultural menu, specializing in the ‘crème de la crème’ of the most popular cuisines. The Wagyu beef, considered the finest and most expensive beef in the world, is served Japanese style at Le Notre, seasoned with the intense flavor enhancer, Wasabe. The Prime Rib is also one juicy delicacy not to be missed, accompanied with the sauce of your choice. To satisfy the majority who are looking for a classy dining place that serves tasty dishes while offering shisha, Le Notre wraps it all up in one pleasing package.
UPTOWN 966
The former Casper and Gambini’s, Uptown 966 has undergone a smooth and suave transition keeping the existing loyalists while appealing to an even wider base. Maintaining the distinctive trendy-casual dining concept, Uptown 966 serves most of old Casper’s favorite dishes in addition to several new entries. This restaurant’s edge comes in its perfect blend of fresh ingredients with gourmet recipes; this specialty is evident in the Beef Tenderloin, which is the favorite of steak lovers in Jeddah. This is one order that never fails the diner’s expectations; the meat is always juicy and cooked to perfection, with a polished sizzling appearance. The accompanying Soy Butter Sauce is remarkably delicious even on its own; when poured on the piece of steak, this sauce seems like it penetrates the meat and flavors it from within! Accompanied by either mashed potatoes or steamed rice, steak at Uptown 966 is a sophisticated delight.
MELANGE
One of the most hip, outdoor hangouts in Jeddah, spacious and strategically located, Melange is a lounge / restaurant offering shisha, drinks, and a wide variety of international dishes. Venues such as Melange tend to set mediocre expectations when it comes to food, as their primary focus seems to be the ambiance and the shisha.
Thankfully, Melange breaks the rule. In fact, the Chef at Melange sears some of the best steaks in town using premium Angus beef. The Chateaubriand Steak is a must-try - it is actually served to the exact cooking degree requested. What is equally impressive is the creamy Peppercorn sauce that adds just the right tang to the steak. Although not essentially a steak cuisine restaurant, Melange serves its steaks to high standards.
ZODIAC
Extravagance and flair are brought to the fine dining scene in Jeddah with Zodiac; this is one restaurant that truly comprehends the notion of modern fine dining and reflects it in all the given elements. In terms of its menu, Zodiac serves famous plates from European cuisines while adding a touch of creativity to give it an exclusive Zodiac experience. Although common, the Rib-Eye steak at Zodiac has a distinctive flavor to it; the tangy meat seasoning is immediately evident from the first bite. As for the Flame Grilled Lamb Chops, they are offered with a delectable brown sauce that makes you rethink what you already knew about the taste of lamb chops. In general, if you are the meticulous type when it comes to meat quality and cooking degree, Zodiac might not be on the top of your steak restaurants‘ list; however if you crave intense seasonings and sauces and are lured by fancy plate presentations, Zodiac is your place. 19th Century Burgers: Classic Hamburgers with a Retro Touch
The search for the perfect hamburger may have come to an end – stepping into the 19th Century Burger restaurant is a step back in time to an age when everything was prepared made-to-order, using only the freshest ingredients. This isn’t your usual burger joint. A casual meal is transformed into an unforgettable experience. Only 100% certified Angus beef imported from the US is used in their hamburgers. Their French fries are made from freshly cut potatoes and their bread is baked in their own kitchen; this attention to quality is evident with just one taste. The enthusiastic, friendly staff make the meal even more enjoyable, leaving you to appreciate the retro décor. This is a classy restaurant for a family meal or night out with friends. The pictures artfully hanging around the restaurant help evoke the mood 60 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Find Buried Treasure at
Al-Seddah…
Given the popularity of lamb and fresh meat during Eid Al-Adha (it’s also known as ‘the meat holiday’!), a visit to one of Jeddah’s best kept secrets during the Eid holiday is a great idea. Al Soddah is a Yemeni restaurant tucked away in Balad. Located near Eve’s Graveyard, this place is full of history and steeped in legends handed down through the ages. As you navigate your car through the winding alleyways, you may be surprised by the diversity of the crowds who are also wending their way to Al Soddah. Famed for its ‘madfoon’ – a delicacy made of tender baby goat which is spiced and then buried in a hole in the ground where it cooks slowly over the coals, Al Soddah serves this Yemeni specialty cooked to perfection. Keeping with tradition, diners are seated on the floor and enjoy the lamb from a communal platter placed in the middle of each dining group, no cutlery required! Many people also order madfoon to take home – it is accompanied by rice cooked in a flavorsome broth accented by Yemeni spices. Their secret spice recipe ensures that no copycat eateries can duplicate their success.
Madfoon literally translates to ‘buried’; VIPs, royalty, and diplomats have all been spotted enjoying Al Soddah’s delicious version. Make this Eid unique with a platter of authentic madfoon. Location: Al-Balad Contact No: +966(02)6042491 - +966(02)6042492

Mystery You’ve GOT Diner to try.. Taking a break...
A friend and I took a break from Stars Avenue Mall shopping at the Haagen Dazs Café. Known world-wide for its high quality ice creams and sorbets, we sat in their swiveling chairs where a friendly waiter presented us with menus. I decided on the Summertime Cone, while my friend picked the Banana & Dulce Crepe. While waiting for our ice creams, we noticed that our table-top was sticky. A simple wipe-down after each customer could easily solve this. It was a bit unsettling to think about what else they forgot to clean, but we tried not to dwell on that fact. At least they had the ice-cream flavors we wanted. The plates came out individually; extra planning is needed so that the orders come out at the same time. The fresh fruits were ripe and flavorful, nicely complementing the strawberry cheesecake ice cream on the plate. The crepe was ok, not as warm as we normally like it. I had been looking forward to the contrast between a warm banana crepe with cold dulce de leche ice cream, but sadly, that didn’t happen. Still, it’d hard to have a bad experience when the overall quality of the ingredients is so good. Haagen Dazs Café is a great place to hang out with friends, enjoy an ice-cream, and listen to the water fountains…just don’t touch the tables. Location: Stars Avenue– 2nd Floor

Penne with Pesto Sauce Thanks to a recommendation from our foodie friends at NBK Bank, we took the plunge and ordered cooked pasta from a fast food joint… and boy, were we amazed at the food! We hesitated for days before deciding, after all, our expectations for fast food are usually pretty low, especially for a pasta dish which requires care and attention. Imagine our surprise when the Pesto Pasta plate from Sbarro Khalidiyah arrived – still hot enough to enjoy. The pasta was cooked just right, with marinated grilled chicken tenderloins mixed with sun-dried tomatoes in a tasty pesto sauce. We actually regretted not having ordered more – seriously, it was that good. So try the Penne with Pesto from Sbarro. The trick is to eat it hot – enjoy! Thanks to our friends at NBK; we’re now waiting for your next recommendation… Take it from us; you won’t regret it! Location: Al-Khaldia - Tel: +966-2-6067449

A Pilgrim’s Diary By Bashir Karamali
Millions of Muslims from all over the world have performed the Haj…it is indeed a blessed journey that is based on the belief in Allah and a sincere response to His call as an act of obedience and piety. The following excerpts are from one pilgrim’s Haj diary; the rituals of Haj are familiar to most Muslims, however these observations invite readers to revisit their Haj memories in a different light or even inspire those who are contemplating Haj in 2012, inshallah. A Look Back… “The feeling of God-consciousness begins to permeate within you well before you set out on the journey; and then it grows progressively stronger all during your stay in the Holy Land. My mind-set was completely different from the hundreds of flights that I’ve taken over the past 50 years. I found my mind turning to Allah, the Creator of the Universe, as the awesome beauty of the cycle of day and night was gradually unfolding before my eyes as I flew eastward on my journey. This all-powerful feeling of God-consciousness just kept intensifying as I touched down at Jeddah Airport and began the bus-ride to Makkah. I was overwhelmed by the hundreds of thousands of men and women from all 68 DESTINATION JEDDAH
corners of the globe – a mosaic of different colors and features – all in total devotion to Allah and praying for His mercy and forgiveness. It is not surprising that no one returns unchanged from the Haj experience. My spiritual battery was recharged and I developed a strong commitment to stay on the ‘Sirat ul- Mustaqeem’ (the Straight Path).” First Glimpse… “It is an electrifying sensation in both mind and body upon glimpsing the Kaabah for the first time. The throng of humanity circling the Kabah all through the 24 hours of day and night is simply awesome. I got an aerial view of the crowds when I offered my prayers from the upper level terrace one evening –the moon and the stars glittered
above my head as I watched the pilgrims circling the Kabah in graceful, everenlarging circles. It looked as if there was an aura of peace and calm overhanging the heads of the pilgrims.” Some Thoughts on the Stampede… “Again last year, there was a stampede at the Jamarah during the symbolic stoning of Satan in which many pilgrims lost their lives. Considering the crowds involved during this ritual, it is a testament to the efforts of the Saudi government to ensure the pilgrims’ safety that more lives are not lost during the Haj. The sheer numbers of Muslims eager to perform Haj (2-3 million every year) creates congestion beyond imagination, yet somehow people practice patience in order to complete their Haj in safety.” One Final Comment… “During the Haj rituals, I feel that I witnessed ‘crowd psychology’ being transformed into a sublime ‘Spiritual Awakening’ – Haj is a symbol of sacrifice in which the soul of man sacrifices all comforts and luxuries for the sake of the happiness derived from the feeling of standing before the Almighty. It is like being drowned in the Sea of God’s Love. When I think back to how difficult the journey must have been for pilgrims in the past before the advent of large ships and airplanes…for many it took months by camel-caravans and so many of the aged didn’t even survive the journey. While the actual travel has been greatly simplified today, I would strongly urge people to undertake their Haj in their youth or middle-age as it is still a physicallydemanding experience.” On a Lighter Note… “One of the positives stemming from the pilgrimage was the loss of about 12lbs of body-weight…I sometimes wonder, in a light-hearted vein, if this phenomenon reflects the weight of my sins forgiven by the Almighty!” DESTINATION JEDDAH 69
The Call To Prayer . . . A Song for the Soul By Dilara Hafiz
A visitor to Saudi Arabia cannot help hearing the melodious sounds of Arabic as it floats from the minarets of mosques in the 5 times daily call to prayer known as the ‘adhan’. Traditionally sung by men who are chosen for the beauty of their voices, the adhan originated at the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) when he selected a former slave named Bilal to call the prayer from the fledgling Muslim community’s first mosque in Madinah. Bilal had endured horrendous suffering at the hands of his former employer as he clung to his Islamic faith and refused to renounce it at the demands of his employer. Abu Bakr, the Prophet’s uncle and staunchest supporter, was impressed with his fortitude and freed Bilal from captivity. Bilal became the first muezzin (one who calls the prayer) in history.

The Pleasures of
Travelling by Private Jet Long considered the domain of movie stars, rock stars, and royalty…travelling by private jet is now within the reach of the average person due to a global glut in supply. Depending upon the type of aircraft and the duration of the flight, a shopping day-trip or a luncheon in a neighboring city can become a reality rather than an unrealized dream.
Travelling by private jet offers privacy, security, and convenience. Commercial travel involves navigating crowded airports, wasting time in check-in queues, and exposing oneself to airborne germs etc. The additional costs which are incurred by a private jet journey can be offset once these factors are taken into consideration. ‘Empty leg’ situations are often the bargain route to booking a private jet and they arise when an aircraft has been hired for a one-way flight. Since the aircraft is returning ‘empty’, it is often available at up to a 75% discount to a standard private jet charter! Private jet travel customarily includes exclusive ground transfers, VIP on-board catering, and medical assistance upon request. Luxury is the byword in the world of small jet charters – every extravagance based upon your personal requirements can be catered for upon prior arrangement. Mayara Home Spa:
Luxury at
Your Comfort By Nilo Haq
Looking for a relaxing spa experience? Recently opened in Jeddah, Mayara Home Spa is the ultimate relaxation sanctuary. It’s rare to find a spa that offers tranquility and extraordinary treatments with the convenience of having it from the comfort of your own home. Mayara, which means the Woman who brings luck in Arabic, is the first professional mobile spa service in Jeddah. If you’re busy and stressed like most of us, you may not take time out for yourself very often. Time is important to every woman and Mayara makes time a priority. With their focus on wellness, their mission is to offer luxury and comfort to today’s woman. Everything detail about Mayara home spa is carefully thought through to perfection making your home into an oasis of luxury. They have a long list of services to avail such as wellness massages, body treatments, facials, waxing, hair treatments, luxurious manicures and pedicures. They boast about their careful attention to hygiene by using a one time only paraffin wax, disposable towels, tubs, manicure and pedicure tools. They also offer special treatments for all types of women: brides, pre/post pregnant women and students to name a few. As well, not offered anywhere else in Jeddah Mayara proudly carries a world-renowned Brazilian manicure 78 DESTINATION JEDDAH

and pedicure. This unique hand and foot treatment uses specially lined gloves/socks full of moisturizing power and six exclusive substances that include keratin and calcium to keep your hands looking young, healthy and vibrant. A cultural aptitude runs through their menu of services, including customized massages like Havana, Lava Shell and Desert Rose. The Desert Rose massage is inspired by Saudi Arabia. “It is a gift of touch and scared ceremony that will reconnect you to both body and soul using aromatic scents of Arabian Oud and hypnotizing notes of Arabian music.” I had the opportunity to try the lava shell massage. The entire experience was like having a small piece of heaven in my home. It was an incredible! I loved how soft and luxurious the massage bed felt against my body and how Mayara thought of every detail to make my experience as special as possible: from the soft scent of the towels to the beautiful ambiance they created. I’ve had massages in the past where I left with a twinge in my shoulder. However after this massage I felt “weightless” and relaxed. She loosened up my tight muscles and her touch left my body warm from blood circulation. My therapist was punctual and was dressed very professionally. She made my room into a five star mini spa by providing a full massage bed, scented towels, dim lighting, perfect room temperature and a customized mixture of aromatic oils and candles. One of the most important parts of my Mayara home spa experience was being able to have some uninterrupted time for myself. I didn’t have to leave my home and wait to get the ultimate spa experience. The massage relieved tension in my muscles and made my stress melt away. Every muscle was given time and my entire body was relaxed. A must try for every woman, finally a REAL spa service in Jeddah. Beauty !
DJ’s Beauty Editor Nilo Haq shares her knowledge and expertise with our readers. Her goal is to impart confidence, share tips, revamp beauty routines, and let you in on Jeddah’s latest beauty news and great finds - enjoy!
Q&A Q: I love nail polishes but don’t know where to find the branded ones in Jeddah. Help? A: I agree, finding a good selection of nail polishes in Jeddah can be tough. Alexander Zouari carries a good selection of OPI, Orly and recently some Essie brand nail polishes. You can also purchase a vast selection of Essie nail polishes from Toni & Guy on Thalia. Nazih (a beauty supply store) is located inside Aziz Mall and on Sari Street. They carry OPI nail polishes for half the price that they sell them for at salons (SR33!).
Beauty Tip ! Broken an eye shadow? Don’t throw it away, instead add a dab of Vaseline and mix until you’ve gotten the right consistency. Presto! You now have a new cream eye shadow!
Splurge or Save Kohl is an ancient eye cosmetic that has been worn traditionally by Egyptian queens from the Bronze Age. Also know as kuhl ( )كحلin Arabic this is a must have beauty product for women of today (especially in Arab Countries). I LOVE: MAC: Smoulder Black Eye Kohl Available at MAC Cosmetics – SR90 STEAL DEAL: Mikyajy: Sabaya Line and Shape Pencil #06 Available at Mikyajy – SR45

Beauty Tip ! Luminous Silk Foundation Women are always looking for more natural foundations and personally; I hate the feeling of heavy foundation on my face especially with all the heat and humidity of living in a desert. This foundation has such smooth texture it feels like satin between my fingertips and what I love most about the entire Giorgio Armani foundation line is that it’s taken natural foundation on to the next level. This foundation is amazing. Natural yet gives you the perfect coverage. Only available at Paris Gallery in Tahlia Center.
TONI&GUY Jeddah…
One of the world’s most powerful hairdressing brands: Toni & Guy recently opened their first women’s branch right here in Jeddah. The question around town: Is Toni & Guy Jeddah comparable to their worldwide standards? Destination Jeddah had to visit to find out. Each of the hair stylists has been trained in London at Toni & Guy. I am a regular client at Toni & Guy London and recognized many of the signature cutting techniques and procedures while getting my hair cut and styled. Though my stylist did not use any product in my hair before blow-drying she was quick and precise. I also wish my stylist would have sat down with me to understand what kind of hair cut I had in mind before beginning. Overall, I loved my hair it was beautifully cut with the signature Toni & Guy edge. The manicure and pedicure was hands down the best I’ve ever had. I sat on a stateof-the-art massage chair while receiving my services. The water was at the perfect temperature and it remained warm as at most salons it cools down. They poured in lovely scented Essie brand salts while the water jets gently massaged my feet. I was also provided with a gel hand rest designed for comfort as I got my nails done. The atmosphere was calm and the music was soothing. Literally I had to stop myself from falling asleep; yes! it was that relaxing. They also had a convenient nail drying station so I could dry my polish and leave quickly. All the tools were hygienic and sanitized including a new nail file. The only thing missing was a good read, as they need a better selection of magazines.
Pros: Wifi Reasonable Prices Intimate Atmosphere Good selection of music Excellent choice of products for all salon & spa services NON –SMOKING! (They have a separate area upstairs for those who want to smoke) Cons: No new magazines (or anything to read in English) Staff using cell phones on the floor Staff’s personal image was not as chic as Toni & Guy’s worldwide Salon is a little congested Rating DESTINATION JEDDAH 81

Recycled Magazine Purse
Chic, Unique Statement of Your Individuality!
Materials:
Old magazines with colorful/bold images and designs that you like, scissors, a roll of clear packaging tape or sheet of clear contact paper, and some stick on velcro.
Method:
1- Carefully tear out the magazine pages you would like to use. Fold them length wise into strips of about 3cm width. 2- Make 12 pages/strips for the front and back. 9 for the front flap. 3- Lay out 6 strips closely together and tape the ends. 4- Weave 6 more strips (under and over) through these. Make sure you push all the weaves tightly together. 5- Tape the whole lot, front and back with packaging tape or contact paper to “laminate” and make it more sturdy. 6- Cut off the extra pieces around the edges to make your square. 7- Lay out the next 6 strips and weave the final 3 strips into it.
8- Cover front and back with packaging tape/ co ntact paper and cut out the rectangle.
9- Fold the larger piece in half lengthwise
and tape the smaller piece to the top for the flap. You will have to tape a couple of layers to make it sturdy. 10- Tape up the edges of the purse. 11- Fold over the front flap and attach sticky velcro for closure. 12- Decorate the purse with whatever you wish and voila!
How to Make Your Car Look Hot … But Feel Cool
Car Zone is a car accessories shop which can make your car look smoking hot, but give you a cooler ride so that you glide through the heat in comfort and style. Tinting your car windows is one way to help decrease the amount of sunlight and ultraviolet rays which enter your car, thereby keeping the interior temperature down as well as maintaining your leather seats soft and supple. Tints will also reduce the amount and duration of air conditioning necessary, which extends the life of the air conditioner system. Car Zone also offers a once-a-year wax for your car. The wax sealant helps to keep your interior temperature down, as well as keeping your paint job safe from chipping due to heat. Teach
Your Kids How To
Become Enviromentally
Friendly
Ensure the Green Revolution lives on tomorrow by raising awareness for your children today. Explain the importance of preserving resources and reducing waste in order to have a healthy Earth – use age appropriate language to convey complex concepts in their terms. Most importantly, lead by example. Once the adults practice green solutions…the kids will follow. • Remind your kids to turn off the faucet while they are brushing their teeth. Leaving a faucet on for five minutes uses the same amount of energy as a 60-watt light bulb that’s been on for 14 hours! • Remind your kids to use small plates. They are very visual, so they might fill their plates with food — no matter how big it is. Using small plates will help reduce wasted food. • Encourage your kids to start a recycling program at their school to help cut down on waste. 84 DESTINATION JEDDAH
• Suggest that they use less electricity so there is less air pollution. They can do this by climbing the stairs instead of taking the elevator or by turning off the unused lights, TVs and computers around the house. • Take a family trip to your local nursery. Ask a specialist there to help you choose a tree that will grow well in your area. Plant the tree in your yard together as a family.
• On a weekend, gather your family and go to a local park to collect trash around the area. If you find any recyclable items, such as cans or paper bags, bring them to your local recycling center. Share these tips to teach your family how to get a little bit more by taking a little less — and give a little back — starting today. http://pgeverydaysolutions.com/pgeds/articlestips/ATAAC/help-your-children-become-ecofriendly?subCat=Green%20Living

Travel literature is always a popular genre. Whether you’re a world traveler or prefer ‘armchair’ traveling, the greatest travel writers can instantly whisk you away to a different time and place. Bill Bryson is one of America’s most famous travel writers; he writes with humor and uses his keen talents of observation to draw parallels across cultures. Although published over 15 years ago, Notes From A Small Island is a wonderful introduction to his work if you’ve never read him before. As a young journalist, Bryson moved from America to England back in 1973. After spending 20 years there, he returns to America, but not before embarking on a farewell tour of his adopted homeland. If you’ve ever visited England - his droll tales of all things British will leave you in stitches! His unassuming manner and ability to mock himself reveals a charming, yet old-fashioned Britain as seen through an American’s eyes. Many of his tales will ring true if you’re at all familiar with England...from the twee village names to the eccentricities of the average Britisher to the mysteries of British cuisine, Notes From A Small Island is a fond celebration of a bygone British era. Perfect book to read on a journey, his chapters contain short vignettes so this book is easy to pick up and put down. Be prepared for curious looks from people around you as you won’t be able so prevent yourself from chuckling out loud during especially amusing bits of this book - you are forewarned!

I’m hooked on the afternoon tea at the Dardasha Restaurant. I was at the Park Hyatt with friends when someone suggested Dardasha. The view, the ambiance, the service and choices of finger foods, scones, and cakes were great. I definitely recommend this place – it’s perfect for an afternoon tea with friends where you can also enjoy the spectacular view of the Red Sea.

My pick of the month are the Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner set from L’OCCITANE. I looove this shampoo!!! After 2 months of usage, this product with its five essential oil complex and silicone-free formula has left my hair soft, volumized, and shiny. AND THE SCENT…oh, pure bliss sent straight from heaven! The only drawback is the steep price.

YOUSEF KURASHI
Thor on DVD & Bluray/Blu-ray 3D. As a superhero and action movie geek, Thor is the amazing 2011 flick with unique effects and intense good vs. evil battles is based on the Marvel Comics storyline, not the original mythological Thor. And for those who own 3D in both TV & Blu-ray player, I highly recommend watching the 3D version for the life -like imagery and excitement. New release in Virgin.
My pick of the month is the Uni-Ball ink black pen. I sketch, doodle, draw literally every day and I am always in search of the perfect black pen. I normally buy special pens from libraries or specialist stores, but last week I found a regular Uni-ball pen in my house. I used it, really loved it, and now I’m never going to change it. Goodbye expensive pens…hello Uni-ball!

Pastel Nail Polish These pastel colored nail polishes in subtle shades of jade, rose jade, pastel yellow, and pale purple are the new trend - they look great with any wardrobe. Just a hint of color or a couple of layers will make your nails look absolutely adorable. Keep it fun this season.
I really like this product especially suitable for this holy month, it’s the NoGerms hand sanitizer. What makes it unique is its fragrance and alcohol free formula which did not dry out my skin like previous sanitizers I’ve used, and made it perfect for Hajj and Omra. It is in a handy spray bottle, and lasts for 4 hours, unlike others which lose effect as soon as they evaporate.
SWALA ESHKI
My pick of the month is Pert Combing Cream. I always had problems with my daughter’s curly hair – it’s very hard to comb and she’d usually end up in tears after every hair wash. I have tried every product there is and finally I came across Pert Combing Cream. I can’t imagine how I lived without it! Now my daughter no longer dreads shower time :)
MAYDA HASHANI
My pick of the month is FIFA’12, FIFA’s newest edition. I am a football freak, and since I can’t practice football in this country, I play football video games all the time. This game is their best release by far - the graphics are unbelievably realistic. Not a day goes by without me sitting there for hours just playing (at home, not at work, of course!) It’s my new addiction.
