LETTER OF THE MONTH

DJ magazine is a must for everyone living not just in Jeddah, but in Saudi Arabia.I enjoy all your issues, very informative with clear and concise articles. I enjoy travelling and came across some very important travel destination in Saudi Arabia like “ Wadi Lajab” , “Caves” and other cool places :)...I hope DJ comes with up more fun and adventurous things to do here in KSA and JED :)...Good Luck !! Baseer Ahmed Dear Baseer, Thank you for your nice comment, this is what we try to accomplish, to give our readers an informative and entertaining magazine that they will enjoy... we look forward to more of your feedback. DJ Team

In our December 2011 issue, we incorrectly identified ‘The Counter’ as a new seafood restaurant slated to open in early 2012, when in fact ‘The Counter’ is a unique, build-your-own-burger restaurant. Our sincere apologies to the good folks behind ‘The Counter’…we look forward to sinking our teeth into one of your made-to-order burgers pronto. Jeddahwis LOVE their gourmet burgers, and the staff at DJ are no exception. Once again, we apologize for the mix-up. DJ The Counter Opening Soon

HERE’S WHAT YOU’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS MONTH ON our facebook page....

On Thumbs up to... MBC for Effective Self-Regulation

Jawahir Alfaiz: I have to disagree on this. I like MBC in fact I don’t have paid satellite service at all due to the high level of programming on MBC. However, they have started to loosen their reins when it comes to broadcasting some foreign shows. One in particular, ‘Dirty Cows’ has no place on our TV’s. I am 34 and grew up abroad and am still shocked by it. I can’t leave my kids freely in front of MBC anymore and that shouldn’t be the case. Kausar Azam: I feel the same. Except MBC3, no other MBCs are safe for children that I have seen in my experience. The other MBCs are safe only if they show animated movies which MBC Max does. WHERE CAN I FIND DESTINATION JEDDAH?

THOUGHTS TO P O N D E R

A User-Friendly Corniche As Jeddah’s Corniche redevelopment gets underway, a designated area for gasolinepowered quad bikes/ATV’s for kids makes sense both from a safety as well as an aesthetic perspective. Pedestrians enjoying a quiet stroll by the seaside will no longer be mowed down by speed-crazy youngsters nor be bothered by the fumes and noise generated by these machines. Just as roadways have designated bicycle lanes - sections of the Corniche can be

clearly marked for pedestrians only, motorized vehicles only, or mixed use. ATV riders will be free to indulge their hobby in safety on a designated track without earning glares from their elders or rebukes from passersby. Age-appropriate rentals and basic safety equipment such as seat belts and helmets should be required to ensure this activity remains safe for kids and teenagers. Outdoor sports should be encouraged whenever possible - let’s make the Corniche user-friendly for ALL Jeddahwis of all ages.

Thumbs up to...

Jeddah’s Emergency Flood Preparations Just in time for the rainy season, Governor of the Makkah Province Prince Khaled Al-Faisal announced the completion of 14 emergency solutions to Jeddah’s serious flash-flooding problems. A network of canals and dams have been constructed in record time in order to avert flooding of Jeddah’s neighborhoods. Although these projects are ‘quick-fix’ solutions to a serious problem - kudos to the administration for acting swiftly and decisively to safeguard Jeddah’s residents. The focus on both better observation as well as better pumping and drainage equipment will co-ordinate future emergency flood management. Long-range plans are being considered for permanent solutions to Jeddah’s growing needs.

Thumbs Down to...

Lack of Services for the Handicapped With the development that has been taking place in Jeddah across various fronts, it is a shame that services for the handicapped are not seeing much of this development. In terms of transportation, it is a challenge to find a car rental or a taxi company that is specialized, or at least prepared, to accommodate handicapped passengers. We need handicap-accessible taxis that enable people to ride with their wheelchairs, conveniently and at ease. Vans with lifts for quadriplegics as well as roomy taxis which can easily store a folded wheelchair are necessary to facilitate the movement of Jeddah’s handicapped community. Jeddah also needs more handicap-accessible buildings; stairs and steep ramps intimidate people in wheelchairs, even with assistance. In general, mobility services for the handicapped in Jeddah need to be addressed as a priority, ASAP. 8

Shimli

Well Worth the Trip By Fouzia Khan

Shimli is a little-known village located 1,000km north of Jeddah and 90km south of Hail. Located along the ancient camel caravan route for Hajj pilgrims from Syria and Iraq, Hail and the neighboring town of Shimli were both popular oasis reststops. Shimli gained fame for its well; legends identify this well for its miracle water which cured Prophet Ayoub (Job) of leprosy. To this day, visitors can shower in this well-water to alleviate their skin diseases, kidney stones, and various other ailments.

16 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Laboratory tests of the water indicate an unusually high sulfur content, which may explain the water’s beneficial properties where skin diseases are concerned. Religious pilgrims coming via land to Makkah detour to Shimli in order to partake of this wellwater which dates back to 1399AH. Shaikh Suliman Atabybee, the current landlord of this locale, has arranged for the water to be freshly pumped from the well every day before Asr prayer in order to supply the many showers on hand. Despite the importance and fame of this well, in recent years the tourism trade has dwindled as most pilgrims arrive by air instead of taking the overland route. But the deserted appearance of Shimli shouldn’t deter tourists from making a visit to this region - Hail contains the ruins of an Ottoman palace and is the heart of Saudi Arabia’s wheat-growing region. Dates from this region are also prized for their size and taste. As an ancient caravan crossroad, Hail retains the peaceful atmosphere of a rural locale; unique architectural monuments includes Airif Fort and Qishlah Fortress, both examples of adobe construction. The Fort dates back hundreds of years as an observation post and stronghold from which there are impressive views of the city. Hail is also a good base from which to visit the rock carvings at Jubba. During the last two weeks of March and the first week of April, hundreds of demoiselle cranes land in Hail on their annual migration. DESTINATION JEDDAH 17

Wedding Arabia

Dreaming of the Big Day By Nazeeha Jacobs

Wedding Arabia, Saudi’s preeminent international event for wedding essentials, was hosted by Jeddah Hilton last November. Inaugurated by Adnan Mandoura, Secretary General of Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the event was a complete showcase of all the necessities required for the perfect wedding - from dresses, jewelry, hair and make-up stylists, to wedding planners, cakes and photographers. The comprehensive exhibition included every detail, even honeymoon destinations, assisting visitors in planning their dream wedding while taking all aspects into consideration. “This unique show brings together the complete paraphernalia of what a wedding requires,” said Zahoor Siddique, Vice President at Al-Harithy Company for Exhibitions (ACE), which organised the event.

With a focus on bridal beauty, the event attracted an impressive array of top fashion designers and stylists, along with an audience chiefly consisting of young women, brides-to-be and their families. Special live demonstrations from beauticians, fitness centres, and fashion and haute couture houses were featured, leading to an informative handson experience. Other highlights included a national Turkish pavilion encompassing over 30 companies supported by Turkey’s Undersecretariate for Foreign Trade, as well as exhibitors from Korea, Lebanon and the UAE. A large number of national companies were also excited to display their products and services. Visitors were able to browse exhibits while getting ideas and gaining professional advice, and thus found the event to be extremely beneficial in aiding them with preparations for their special day. Exhibitors also judged it to be rewarding from a business standpoint, as it put together wedding suppliers and eager consumers. The show was important in the promotion of Saudi Arabia’s multibillion-dollar wedding industry, which has one of the highest per capita outlay and continues to increase both in demand and overall expenditure. Wedding Arabia was regarded as an avid success by all participants and is scheduled to run again during November of this year.

Adding a Kick To Your Fitness Routine! By Mayda AlHashani & Nazeeha Jacobs

Fitness and sports fanatics appreciate Jeddah’s variety of gyms and sports facilities. From football to basketball, it’s easy to find a place to engage in a variety of sports. However, for those of you eager to get into shape in a different way or even just try something new, a growing martial arts culture has recently emerged in Jeddah. Many types of martial arts classes for males, females and children are available…if you know where to look. Although many of these alternative sports may seem straightforward, they each employ intricate techniques that are difficult to master without the aid of professionals.

BOXING

Boxing is a combat sport using the fists and is one of the only forms of martial arts developed in Europe. Classes are held at Sport Tech. Abdulrahman offers classes at 6:30pm on Saturdays, Mondays and Tuesdays, and Yousif Haroon teaches at 8:30pm on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cost: SR 300/month. 26 DESTINATION JEDDAH

THAI BOXING

Also known as Muay Thai, this combat sport differs from traditional boxing in that it allows punching, kicking, and elbow and knee strikes. It is Thailand’s national sport. Captain Ismail Rawas at Sport Tech offers classes at 9pm on Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays. Cost: SR 350/month.

JIU JITSU:

The Martial Art of Self-Defence By Nazeeha Jacobs

Stefan Zoll, annual competitor in the World Professional Jiu Jitsu Cup, is one of the few accomplished Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners in the Kingdom. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is based on grappling and ground fighting, and has often been proven to be the most effective form of martial arts in terms of defence in a real fight situation. It has thus experienced a surge in popularity in recent years, with police officers and security guards finding its techniques especially beneficial in situations demanding hand-to-hand combat. “A real fight doesn’t look like a Jackie Chan movie or a choreographed set piece,” says Stefan. “It’s often a fight for survival. Traditional martial arts have their value, but what we’re talking about is what’s most likely to work on the street for the average guy or girl.” Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a useful skill to learn regardless of gender, and is being taught in the US as part of rape prevention programs for women. Stefan currently runs a class for 11-16 years olds at Jeddah Prep and Grammar School, as well as private classes. He plans on starting regular classes at a gym in Jeddah in the near future, and can be contacted on stefanzoll@hotmail.com or +966-5567295881 for any inquiries. Harley-Davidsons Rule the Road By Deena Almaena

Harley-Davidson expert Abdul-Elah Baghdadi is one of the 1million HarleyDavidson addicts around the world. DJ catches up with him in between his rides for an interesting Q&A session. Q: How do you feel when you ride your bike?

and it’s completely different from riding in a car. It’s indescribable !”

A: “It’s a great feeling…the feeling of the wind, the feeling of freedom and independence all at the same time. You feel like your spirit is flying, whatever the time and wherever the place. You get a different feeling every time, everyday, it’s priceless

Q: Have you customized your bike? It looks truly unique.

30 DESTINATION JEDDAH

A: “Yes, my bike is fully customized (except for the frame and the engine), everything is customized, cosmetically and functionally. It’s my personal piece of art.”

Q: Tell me about the Harley-Davidson group – is it a club? A: “The Harley-Davidson group is a riding club of the Harley-Davidson Co. established in 1983 to support Harley owners. This club is run by volunteers and is the largest manufactured associate club in the world with membership approaching over 1.5 million members. There are chapters in many cities - I’ve been a member in the club ever since I bought my V-rod Harley bike.” Q: Do they do organize races? A: “Yup, there are some races and other Harley-Davidson activities, but most of the Harley-Davidsons are built for cruising purposes. These bikes are made for touring and for city rides…they’re a luxury daily ride!” Q: Any tips for novice riders? A: “Sure! Starters should be patient in learning to ride. Take it step by step and master the basics. Listen to the other riders and their experiences, they might give you some tips. Take some courses given by experts, that would be really helpful. If you have passed the starter stage or level and you’re ready to develop a new experience, you can take expert courses as well, and learn more about the experiences and tips from Youtube. Wear your gear, and like they say: better safe than sorry. Enjoy riding and hopefully one day we’ll see more Saudi riders joining in. We are all family in the Harley-Davidson club.”

Spinning New Tunes With A Global Sound

By Dalya Bajunaid Photography by Fahad Ayyad

34 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Jeddah’s Hip-Hop and Rock scenes thrive on local artists producing their own unique sounds - a melange of music which combines their Arab origins with a global, modern flair. Vinyl Mode is the newest resident group to hit the scene; specializing in Trance/House tracks, they’re making their mark and aiming for the international scene. They started off as many musical groups start - with a passionate meeting of the minds. Although their tastes in music differ from one another, Jeddah native, Muhanned Nassar, and Greek KAUST student, Harris Mavromatis, found that they both shared the same respect and love for artistic ingenuity and educating

the masses. Individually, they grew up surrounded by an eclectic mix of sounds, from Pink Floyd and James Brown to Madonna. As local DJ’s, during their free time, they started experimenting with different elements until they wound up with a sound exclusively their own. The name Vinyl Mode just seemed to make sense, as they use actual vinyl records and turntables; a throwback to the way DJ’s originally started. Utilizing social networking sites like YouTube and Facebook as a means to “spread the love,” as they put it, Vinyl Mode fans are springing up all over. You can ‘like’ their page on www.facebook. com/vinylmode to sample the music DESTINATION JEDDAH 35

Entertainment or tune into their podcast “Tune Your Senses,” which is already being heard in 16 different countries. The overall positive outlook and optimistic attitude of Muhanned and Harris keep them going; they refuse to let any social taboos, due to misconceptions, hinder their creativity. They might be DJ’s, but they don’t let the fact that they should be a business thwart their message. Collaborating with talented graphic designers and photographers, they are keen on titillating not only your sense of hearing, but also your sight. Completely believing in artistic freedom and a total suspension from any negativity has left these two men without limitations in pursuing what they long for. Ultimately, Vinyl Mode has big aspirations…to be heard and appreciated on a global level, while still leaving their mark on Jeddah. Any young adult with a dream and a laptop can express themselves musically. Using the sounds of their heritage for inspiration coupled with the increasing globalization of musical styles, there is no doubt that Jeddahwis are producing a distinctive and unique sound that can be enjoyed both locally and abroad.

Getting fit and starting a healthier lifestyle is probably on the top of everyone’s list. Energize yourself to get fit in style with the latest sportswear and the latest tunes. If working out at the gym is not for you, try taking up a new sport or even a dance class that you enjoy and see what a change this will make to your self esteem and your life as a whole

RECYCLE!

Personally, I love clearing out my wardrobe at the beginning of each season, but some clothes are too hard to get rid of due to sentimental value. This year’s solution is to reinvent them into something totally new. Make a skirt out of a dress, a top out of a skirt, shorts out of jeans, and a necklace out of a scarf or even change the buttons of your favorite coat. Get creative and recycle your clothes for a renewed look!

HIGH HEELS

Nothing gives a woman a sexier silhouette or completes an outfit more than a pair of killer heels! In our busy lifestyles rushing to work, taking the kids to school, going to the supermarket and running various errands, it may feel hard to walk around in your favorite heels all day; however you can always keep a spare pair of ballerina flats in the car and change whenever it’s appropriate. Whatever their material, design, or color - choose a statement heel to stand tall and stand out from the crowd!

ACCESSORIZE! ACCESSORIZE! ACCESSORIZE!

I can’t stress enough how important it is to accessorize! An outfit isn’t fully complete without being finished off by a statement accessory such as a hat, a necklace, a pair of gloves, or a scarf. I know you can get into the habit of rushing out in your usual ‘comfortable’ clothes, but this year try to make a habit of choosing one unique accessory to complement your look before you walk out the door. Anyone who knows me knows that this resolution is going to be really easy for me as I have a weak point for sequins. If you don’t already own a couple of sequined items in your closet. No matter how much time and effort you put into your outfit, your overall look will not nearly be as impressive as you’d imagined if your hair, nails, and make-up are not in perfect shape. A resolution you’ll thank me for later is to get into the habit of grooming yourself well. Take care of your hair. For 2012,why not adopt a new hairstyle? Cut a fringe, add layers, go for a bob, or even change your hair color; it will definitely be a great place to start for a new you in the New Year. Next comes make-up. Whether you want to go for a natural look for the day or a full on glamorous look for a night out, take 10 minutes of your time to add a little make-up before you step out the door. You will be amazed how it will transform the way you look and feel. And last but not least, never neglect your nails! This year don’t forget to treat yourself to a regular mani/ pedi, be adventurous and try new shades, or go all out and change the shape of your nails! There’s nothing more feminine about a woman than an elegant hand topped off with shapely nails.

iZone

iTechia

Perhaps one of the most popular computer stores with 7 different branches, browsing the iZone on Prince Sultan St. proved to be a pleasurable shopping experience. While not particularly spacious, the atmosphere is friendly with music playing and employees exuding casual ease. They are refreshingly eager to assist customers with the utmost of friendliness and efficiency and do not hesitate to mention discounts and offers. They also have their own in-store maintenance facility and provide an impressive site for browsing specific products.

Largely spaced and pleasingly bright, iTechia on Sultan St. definitely resembles what an Apple store should look like. The large space is very comfortable to browse through and has cool, Apple store-like dĂŠcor. They also carry iPods, iPhones, iPads and even Blackberry products along with a wide range of colorful accessories for all their products. Unfortunately, the staff were not particularly friendly or actively informative, it seemed like I was trying to squeeze the information out of them. But they do have in-store maintenance and an impressive website with extensive details on each of their products.

Also on Prince Sultan St, iWeaver is a comfortably spaced store, although it can be fairly crowded due to its prime shopping location. It has a friendly atmosphere and the employees are readily available, exceptionally helpful and informative. They easily guide you through their products confidently and knowledgably. And along with all of the other Apple products they carry, they also specialize in professional cameras, with an impressively wide range of brands and products. They also conveniently provide maintenance for Apple products not purchased at their store. In addition, their website showcases all of their products clearly the most up-to-date selection.

Also on Prince Sultan St, Mac It’s space is comfortable enough to browse through and good if you know what you want, but it’s not a place for beginners. The employees seemed less eager to assist, with only one person talking to customers. In addition, they didn’t share information quite so freely and I wasn’t shown all the computers without taking the initative; I also found myself asking too many questions. The fluorescent lighting is unfortunately unwelcoming and their accessory products seemed listlessly displayed. You have to go in person because they don’t have a website - however they do provide in-store maintenance that is known for speed and efficiency.

www.i-weaver.com

Mac Buddy With a prime location on Tahlia St., Mac Buddy is as cute and compact as an iPod. With its small space and comfortable setting, it’s almost your own personal Apple store, (but wouldn’t be so if they had more customers - the small space was surprisingly empty.) Their employees were extremely friendly and eager to assist and inform. They seemed to go out of their way to provide me with all the right information on their stock, but unfortunately not all their computers were on display. They also provide in-store maintenance service. The range of their other products seems limited, although they seem to carry some unique brands. Mac Buddy doesn’t have a website either, but the store experience is enjoyable.

Vito’s Salad

Nicoise Salad

A sensually addictive salad is the Vito’s Salad at Toasted. With bresaola and grilled chicken slices, spiced up with a delectable lemon-mustard dressing, this salad is guaranteed to entertain your taste buds and thoroughly satisfy your appetite. In general, salads at Toasted are refreshingly gourmet, with balanced mixes difficult to find anywhere else. Another popular one is their Classic Italian Salad; it is a wild mix of strawberries and pine nuts on a bed of lettuce and rocca , seasoned with balsamic dressing. Toasted is the best place to order or pick up salad from; it is fresh, delicious and convenient. It’s extremely popular with the young working crowd who are looking for a clean, healthy snack to have at the office or on-the-go.

Le Notre’s recipe for Nicoise Salad is definitely a secret one; their version just goes beyond the familiar Nicoise salad flavors. The freshness of the ingredients is surely part of the secret; the artichokes for example, are a delicacy on their own. The salad is enhanced by the tasteful add-ons such as the olive tapenade, the baby new potatoes and the croutons. Their Crispy Noodle Salad with ginger and soya sauce and the mouthwatering Citrus Gambas Salad are two other popular salads at Le Notre. With more than 10 haute cuisine salad platters beloved by Jeddah’s fine diners; diners regularly find themselves ordering salads as entrees. The exquisitely European essence in these salads elevates the eating experience beyond sensational - considering their tantalizing presentations, it is clear that Le Notre truly believes in the saying that “our eyes eat first“.

Chef Salad Cilantro Café

For a truly wholesome and appetite-fulfilling salad, drop by Cilantro Café and order the Chef Salad; it is basically known as ‘the salad that has it all’. With grilled chicken breasts, slices of roast beef, olives and eggs lying on a bed of lettuce, this salad is ideal for weight watchers who want a nutritiously filling snack. A side dressing is offered to add some flavor, but if you are counting calories, you might consider having it plain. The Mixed Seasonal Salad is the healthiest option at Cilantro, with no meat ingredients and a light vinaigrette dressing. In fact, the food items on the menu, be they soups, sandwiches or salads, are all fresh, flavorsome and nourishing, leaving no traces of guilt after being devoured. With the concept of ‘appetite for life’, Cilantro presents a cohesively health-conscious menu that includes delectably balanced items, with insightful new additions every now and then.

entrées; and there is quite a generous range in the menu to select from. Uptown 966 is one of the few places that manages to confidently tick both boxes: health and appetite.

Feta Tabbouleh Semsom

Semsom’s Tabbouleh Feta has created a lot of buzz around town, considering that not many dare to mess with the classic tabouleh recipe. However, their chef knows exactly what he is doing, as adding the feta cheese to the tabouleh pulls together an unpredictably flavorsome salad. Yet for those who prefer the more familiar version, Semsom serves both the traditional tabouleh and fattoush prepared to perfection. Semsom is an inventive, modern restaurant serving familiar Lebanese dishes with a novel touch. Salads are standard orders in any Lebanese restaurant, garnishing the tables next to the hummus, vine leaves and the other common entrées; and although most Jeddah diners know the taste of these salads by heart, this creative Lebanese restaurant makes their salads their signature items with a special ‘twist’.

Quesadilla Explosion Salad Chili’s

Though it is not the first restaurant to come to mind when thinking of salads, but Chili’s serves one unique dish not found anywhere else; the Quesadilla Explosion,, which is their signature salad. Generously served, this salad is literally exploding with appetizing ingredients that entice you to delve in and start munching. Chicken, corn, tortilla strips, beans and cheddar cheese are 56 DESTINATION JEDDAH

all tossed over a bed of lettuce, drizzled with ranch dressing; a balsamic dressing is served on the side if you want to add some tang. Surrounding the salad are four pieces of cheese quesadillas to relish with your salad mixture and complement your meal. Considering the portion size and the ingredients, this salad is definitely not an appetizer or a side order; it could be equal to a pasta serving or a burger in terms of calories and substance.

Spicy Crunchy Tuna Salad Zn Lounge

The Spicy Crunchy Tuna Salad at Zn Lounge has created a buzz in Jeddah, with mixed textures and a delectable zesty dressing. Soft pieces of tuna are jumbled with crunchy bits and seasoned with an Asian-infused, spicy dressing, bringing to diners an exotic eating experience. Zn Lounge serves some of the most sensational salads in town, with authentically wild ingredients and intense seasonings. Another exclusive delight on their menu is their Crunchy Salmon Salad, delectably fresh and flavorsome. Along with pleasing your taste buds, Zn Lounge brings joy to your eyes with their stimulating presentations and artistic garnishes.

Caesar Salad Station

Nafoura Restaurant - Park Hyatt Hotel

For those who especially savor their personal touch in food, Nafoura Restaurant has a side station serving Caesar salad ingredients prepared for them to mix their own version of this salad. Lettuce, shredded cheese, croutons, shrimps, chicken, and Caesar dressing are all appetizingly displayed on the station, enticing diners to mix as preferred. As for the actual salad buffet, it features a selective assortment of Mediterranean salads blended to perfection. The tabouleh, for instance, is not missing a tinge of lemon or a grain of salt, it is just right. Besides the typically expected salads and mezzas, the station includes other tasty delights like a potato salad, green bean salad, and artichoke salad. Salad buffets in general are quite tricky, especially when it comes to quality and freshness; but at the Nafoura Restaurant, there is no cause for concern. They are known to consistently display one of the finest salad buffets in town, focusing more on quality rather than quantity.

Dining Around Town

Cooking with Candor By Mariam Polding

I used to think the biggest critic in my life was my mother, but then I married a chef; Jeddah local Chef Khalid Arif from the hit daytime show, Sabeh El Kheir Ya Arab, on MBC1. You may be under the partly true conception that being married to a chef means, apart from the expected living food as a literal lifestyle, we share lengthy conversations about whether foie gras and chocolate is a gastronomical stroke of genius or just plain disgusting, how to tell the difference between parsley and cilantro [which I’m still unable to do] and engage in heated debates on how to deconstruct Arabic cuisine. While this is true 90% of the time, the other 10% consists of my futile attempts in the kitchen to impress the chef, which are often met with polite critique. We sat down in the center of our universe, the kitchen, and share a conversation about what links Chef Khalid and our family to you and yours. If you are what you eat, what are you?

I am definitely garlic & olive oil. You know I use it in everything, how much Extra Virgin Olive Oil do we go through in this house? That’s true, but I probably would have said you’re noodles! What is your worst imaginable restaurant experience?

I can deal with anything except overcooked food. That’s completely unforgivable. I can’t deal with that anywhere. Your friends must be really nervous when inviting you to dinner…

I wouldn’t say nervous, but they always make remarks like “please accept our humble 58 DESTINATION JEDDAH

food,” or “I hope this meets your standards,” but they’re never really nervous. Sometimes I even sneak into the kitchen to discover how they made a particular dish - I’ve eaten many fantastic meals at friends’ homes. On your cooking show Sebah el Kheir Ya Arab, you’ve discovered the world through the cultures of flavor. Through your travels, which country have you found genuinely deserves the title “Food Capital of the World?”

Without a doubt, it would be Singapore. Not only does it have the best and most authentic Malay, Thai & Chinese food, which alone is impressive, but they also have some of the best Western cuisine restaurants in the

world. Not all countries are blessed with a multicultural populace that has contributed to their gastronomical scene in such a profound way, as in the case of Singapore. They have invested and strategized to become the culinary capital of the world! So, what is the dish with the most electric notes you’ve ever experienced, and where was it?

It was a dessert I had in Singapore in one of the top 25 restaurants in the world [according to the reputed S. Pellegrino List]. Believe it or not, I’m not into desserts, but this dessert blew my mind. The dish paired watermelon with pepitas [pumpkin seed], goat’s cheese and milk ice-cream. At first, I didn’t know what it was, other than I was experiencing an unbelievable explosion of flavors that I had never experienced before. It was the first dessert that almost made me cry; you always remember your first, and mine was at Iggy’s.

food is very complex with a lot of flavors, like how our parents and grandparents cook. But, with today’s lifestyle, people don’t have the time to do that, and it’s difficult to replicate this process as we are all busy families with children. I want to share the simple techniques that make cooking quick, fun, easy and involve your children in the process.

Essentially, you are a culinary Ambassador from Saudi, so how do you describe our food and the way we eat when you meet other chefs from around the world?

In Saudi Arabia, we eat very, very well, especially in the Hijazi region. A Hijazi’s palette is quite well developed, because historically, we have been exposed to exotic dishes from around the world on account of the myriad multicultural influences from traders along the Silk Route and religious tourists to Makkah/Madinah. Immigrants have enriched the cuisine of the Hijaz with Western, Indian, Iranian, Turkish, African, Syrian, Lebanese spices and foods. What do you feel is lacking in our local culinary landscape, if anything?

We have to start eating restaurant-style food at home. Rather than having 8 different dishes in the middle of the dining table where people help themselves and overeat, each individual dish should be assembled in the kitchen and served. This is the kind of culture of eating I would like to spread. How do you hope to impact your viewers at home with your style and method of cooking?

Watch Chef Khalid Arif bring restaurantstyle eating home every Sunday and Tuesday on MBC1 at 11:45 AM, and experience authentic Asia with the launch of Chef Khalid’s restaurant, Asia Box, coming soon to Jeddah in 2012. Contact Chef Khalid at: khalidarif@gmail.com

Mystery Diner An Old Faithful Oriental Gem in Need of an Update Gulf Royal Chinese Restaurant Tucked away in a modest piazza just north of Rawdah Street is the old faithful Oriental gem, Gulf Royal Chinese Restaurant. Decorated in a traditional Chinese style, the interior has seen better days. One of the first things to strike you upon being seated is the intimidating menu - with over 165 dishes on offer - even the most loyal regulars can’t fully sample them all! We started with Shrimp and Seafood starters which were nice and crispy; the Crab Meat Corn and Hot & Sour Chili soups were both hearty and satisfying. Moving on to the entrees, the Peking Duck was acceptable, but could have benefited from a more authentic flavor. The Cuttle Fish with Dry Chili, Grilled Prawns, and Fried Crabs With Ginger & Onion were all well seasoned and well presented, but on the greasy side. Although the Szechuan Beef was a bit bland, the Sweet & Sour Chicken was well received by younger eaters who loved the tasty, tangy sauce. Overall, the

flavors weren’t authentic Chinese - hints of the Middle East seem to have crept into their recipes. Whilst we did have to wait longer then necessary for our order to be taken and for the dishes to be presented, the standard of service was reasonable. To many Jeddahwis, this is the closest, most affordable, authentic Chinese food experience in town , but perhaps they have rested on their laurels for too long. With the opening of newer, more original restaurants offering Gulf Royal stiff competition, it’s time for them to revamp their recipes and their menu. Whilst choice is normally a good thing… they should consider cutting down on the number of dishes in order to focus on even more authentic flavors. It would also be nice to get a take away menu with the prices printed on it. Rawdah Street Tel: 02 665 3335/660 6704 www.gulfroyal.com

Applebee’s makes a concerted effort to cater to the tastes and expectations of their guests; releasing revamped menus up to four times a year in response to customer feedback. In addition, the famed dining chain attempts to constantly involve customers in fun and rewarding campaigns. They recently handed out nine Harley Davidsons as grand prizes in a recent competition! Spiritual Outreach at the IEF Center By Dilara Hafiz

The IEF center (Islamic Education Foundation Ladies’ Section) is a non-profit organization which strengthens faith, open-mindedly educates, and encourages the mastery of Islamic principles. It opened its doors in 1997 to Muslims and non-Muslims in order to convey the beauty and simplicity of Islamic life. Staffed by an educated group of Saudi and multi-national female employees and volunteers, IEF conducts classes and informative events & trips throughout the year. Women’s Classes at IEF

Arabic for non-Arabs Tajweed classes in English Classes in Turkish Tafseer classes in Bengali & Urdu ‘New Muslim’ classes in English, Tagalog, Amhari, & Sinhalese ‘Living the Qur’an’ series & Comparative Beliefs classes by Dr. Lamya Shahin Dr. Lamya Shahin is the “Outreach Coordinator for Spiritual Affairs” at the IEF Center. Her work in hospitals around the world exposed her to people curious about Islam. “Dealing with non-Muslims attracted me to a different science - the science of comparative religion,” says Dr. Shahin. “I was contacted by many who asked questions about Islam and I enjoyed explaining the basics and clearing up their misconceptions. At the Center for Applied Sciences, I attended various courses including the miracles of Qur’an and Sunnah (the Prophetic traditions); this enabled me to correlate between scientific discoveries and the Islamic faith which helped me in my active Islamic call (dawah work.)” In addition to classes, lectures & trips, the IEF Center also produces Islamic literatures, yearly calendar (Arabic & English), informative Islamic bags (English, German & Spanish), gift packages for new Muslims, and CD’s on a variety of topics. All their products are suitable for non-Muslims as well as Muslims seeking a deeper understanding of the faith. 68 DESTINATION JEDDAH

The Eye-Opening Facts Behind SemiPermanent Lashes

By Nilo Haq

cause your natural lashes to fall out.

How much does it cost? SR 500+ Nothing makes your eyes more beautiful than long, luscious lashes. Semipermanent eyelash extensions have become popular the world over; wellknown celebrities have been wearing them for years. What are Semi-Permanent Eyelash Extensions? Different than one-use fake eyelashes, these semi-permanent eyelash extensions are glued on one-by-one onto the natural eyelash (not the skin) using specially created glue. How long do they last? Semi-permanent lashes last from 2 - 4 weeks, depending on the growth of your natural lashes. Do not believe empty promises that they can last for 2+ months. A real eyelash’s life cycle is 7-8 weeks, but you can’t know which stage of the growth cycle your natural eyelash has reached when you apply the synthetic lashes. As your natural lashes grow and fall out, so will the synthetic ones that are attached to them. (The growth rate of your hair/nails also indicates your eyelash growth rate.) Are they safe? Yes, eyelash extensions are safe, but you have to be careful. They can damage your natural lashes or cause eye inflammation if they are not applied correctly. Look for a certified cosmetologist to ensure proper application. Be sure the salon is using the correct glue, as there have been cases of salons using cheaper adhesives that can

Where can I get it done? Most of the high-end salons in Jeddah like Alexander Zaouri and Jamalouki, to name a few, but do your homework and ensure that only certified cosmetologists or technicians get close to your eyes. How can I safely remove them? It is important to not remove these on your own, but to get them professionally removed by carefully using a special glue remover. Want full & long lashes? Here are some other options: Natural Option Try the natural option of coating your lashes with castor oil using a clean mascara wand every night before you sleep for thicker and longer lashes. Prescription Option Ask your dermatologist about Latisse – a prescription treatment for hypotrichosis (sparse eyelashes) used to grow eyelashes, making them longer, thicker and darker. Non Prescribed Eyelash Treatment Lash Reneu is a non prescription eyelash treatment that works in 6 weeks. Nutra-list Lash Reneu is for (SR225) and you can find it at Family Pharmacy - Rea Sea Mall & Al-Rawdah district. DESTINATION JEDDAH 77

Healthy Living 2 years ago, I was sitting on a couch, alone again on New Year’s Eve. I was thinking about my New Year’s resolutions when I decided that ‘better health’ would be it. This was probably the 6th year in a row I had chosen health, with the predictable failure since I’d postpone and procrastinate for the entire year. But this time was different, this time I meant it… and 2 years later, I weigh 20 kilos less! Here are the secrets to my success. I focused on health, but you can substitute any personal goal from better job, academic success, or new friendships - the same basic principles apply.

to New Year’s Resolution Success

Sacrifice

Keeping physical notes on the sacrifices you are willing to make really helps make it much easier to maintain your focus. It means that when your friends ask you out or you start day dreaming about your comfy bed instead of going to the gym, you will make the right decision and do what you have to do to get healthy. Are you ready for this?

Prioritize

There is no more important investment of our time nor money than in our health. Visualize the same time next year, and imagine a healthier, more beautiful you. Unfortunately this will not happen by taking a walk once every 2 months! Exercise and healthy eating have to become a way of life for it to happen. Is it worth it to you?

Give yourself some credit. How many other people are sitting there thinking about getting healthy, but doing nothing about it? The majority of people around you! So start small with an attainable, easy target ie: walk 20 minutes this week. That way, you’ll begin 2012 with some momentum and crave even more and even bigger wins as the year progresses. Count your wins every month to chart your progress. You’ll be surprised how easy it is. Oh, and don’t forget to enjoy frequent victory dances. They’re vital!

Get Some Support

What’s easier, walking a mile alone or walking a mile with 10 people alongside you, chatting and enjoying each other’s company? Support can be a spouse, a friend, a family member or even the tea boy at work. It doesn’t even have to be a person, it can be a website or a group, so plug in some music or tune into an audio book and get moving! Make sure that the whole world knows about your decision to focus on your health - you‘ll be surprised at the people supporting your efforts and applauding you at the finish line.

Have a Higher Purpose

Imagine getting healthy, your family getting healthy, and people around you asking you how you did it. Imagine doing it for someone other than yourself, for your son, daughter or spouse. Imagine it actually working. Getting healthy this New Year is not a higher purpose in itself, but doing it for someone you care about is.

May you all have a blessed and beautiful 2012 full of health, wealth and happiness!

Ways

to Quit Smoking By: Nilo Haq

Cigarettes are among the most addictive drugs in the world and nicotine is one of the strongest stimulants known - no wonder kicking the smoking habit is so difficult! With more restaurants, offices, and government buildings becoming smoke-free in Jeddah; it’s evident that awareness of the harmful effects of smoking and second hand smoking is affecting smokers. Still, there are more than six million smokers of both genders in KSA with a reported 22,000+ people dying of smoking and smoking related diseases each year. Smoking is a fatal addiction…and the New Year is a perfect time to give up for good.

Cold Turkey

1

Cold Turkey literally means making up your mind to stop smoking without the help of any medications or treatments. It‘s a mind over matter issue, but it‘s not easy. Studies show that this method only works for about 10% of smokers; unfortunately there’s a high relapse rate. “Most people think they can handle quitting on their own, but they typically underestimate how powerful nicotine dependence really is,” says The American Cancer Society. 80 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Acupuncture

3

Acupuncture is a natural method to quit smoking. A cigarette contains over 4,000 chemicals including formaldehyde, arsenic and tar; acupuncture is perfect for people who want to avoid artificial methods. It works by placing needles at specific points on a person’s body in order to alter the body’s needs and cravings and usually requires one or two sessions a week for 30 minutes until success is achieved. The sessions are also great for reducing the stress that is linked to withdrawal. Hypnosis is another natural, chemical-free method often successful in behavior modification.

Electronic Cigarettes

An electronic cigarette looks and feels like a cigarette. It also provides nicotine like a cigarette BUT it doesn’t have any carcinogens or tobacco AND it doesn’t emit any second-smoke. Though it was designed as an alternative to smoking cigarettes, it has helped wean people off of smoking for good. Smoking e-cigarettes can still cause cancer, but it’s still worth a try to help you quit.

‘Cold’ Laser Therapy

Laser therapy to quit smoking relies on the same basic principals of acupuncture. A ‘cold’ laser, which is completely safe for general medical use, is run over your entire body, concentrating on specific points such as the ears. The procedure is painless and can significantly reduce the craving for cigarettes. With a success rate of over 95%, this may be the method of the future. The treatment involves 2-3 sessions of 15 to 30 minutes each with results depending on the level of your addiction. This treatment is highly recommended, especially if you have tried other techniques to quit and just can’t seem to kick the habit. It also helps to curb the initial withdrawal symptoms. Nicotine Replacement Therapy

One of the most popular and effective methods to quit smoking is Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). It supplies your body the nicotine it’s craving without you having to smoke. NRT contains up to 50% of the amount of nicotine found in most cigarettes. As your body adjusts to lower levels of nicotine, you gradually stop craving it until you are able to give up NRT as well, without the withdrawal and mood swings. Nicotine gum, Patches, Nasal Sprays, Lozenges and Inhalers - take your pick of NRT. Check out the Smoking Cessation Unit located inside New Jeddah Clinic Hospital. +9665 2667 5000

Lemon Lore Lemonade, lemon juice, lemon sorbet… no matter how you like your lemons, the general consensus from nutritionalists is that ALL types of lemon products have a beneficial effect upon the body’s digestive and immune systems. Although lemons are acidic, they have an alkalizing impact upon the body, especially in balancing liver enzymes by controlling excess bile flow. Drinking the juice of half a lemon in a glass of warm water upon waking is suggested as the easiest and most effective method of enjoying the benefits of this powerful citrus.

By Dilara Hafiz

Medicinal Values

It assists in “cleansing the system of impurities” and will help reduce symptoms of malaria, rheumatism, and gout. It is effective at dissolving uric acid (often the cause of pain and inflammation in joints) and other poisons in the body.

Liver Benefits

Provides a natural strengthening agent to liver enzymes when they are too dilute. Helps fix oxygen and calcium levels in the liver, which ultimately affects blood oxygen levels.

Digestive Aid

Lemon water assists in the process of digestion and elimination. Relieves symptoms of indigestion, such as heartburn, belching and bloating.

Colds and Flu

Increasing body alkalinity is one of the key benefits of drinking lemon water, since bacteria and viruses that cause cold and flu symptoms thrive in an acidic environment

Fact or Fiction?
