THOUGHTS TO P O N D E R
Painting a True Picture
Quick - what’s the first thought that comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘France’? Maybe croissants, Eiffel Tower, or the Louvre. How about when you hear the word ‘Egypt’? Pyramids, the Nile, belly-dancers. What about when someone mentions ‘Saudi Arabia’? If your mind immediately comes up with oil, oppression, and women can’t drive…then it’s time for Saudis to tell their own story. The story which extolls the profound generosity of the people, their pride in their cultural and religious heritage, the many natural wonders from the rose fields in Taif to the under-water splendors of the Red Sea, and the talented Saudi artists who are working to convey a
comprehensive, more beneficial glimpse of today’s modern Saudi Arabia. Saudi artists are increasingly taking part in international art exhibitions; through poetry, sculpture, and paintings, the images convey powerful snapshots which transcend Islamophobic, anti-Arab sentiment. Reducing misconceptions and misunderstandings through art is a time-honored tradition which proves more successful than op-eds which go unread or blogs which garner little media attention. Kudos to Jeddah‘s Athr Gallery and exhibits such as ‘Edge of Arabia‘ which tell a more objective, unbiased story - a story which Saudis can be proud of. “A picture is worth a thousand words…”

Jeddah’s Patrons of the Arts!
A big ‘Thank-you’ to Jeddah’s visionaries who believe whole-heartedly that a vibrant art scene is of vital importance to a city, a country, and indeed, the world. Jeddahwis can enjoy world-class exhibitions such as the ‘Edge of Arabia’ installation running from Jan.20 Feb.18 at the Al Furusia Marina on the Corniche. Featuring over 40 new works by Saudi Arabia’s emerging contemporary artists, ‘Edge of Arabia’ is poised to begin a dialogue between artists and their local communities, but also has the potential to inspire and educate as it tours Europe, the GCC and the US. Kudos to Abdul Latif Jameel, Abraaj Capital, Dar Al-Hekma University, Christies, Etihad Airways, Dorchester Estates, Al-Sawani Group, and Athr Gallery for their support.

Knee-Jerk Reactions
Last year, several new laws increased rights for women. The right to vote was a step towards a more just society, however recent drawbacks are an exaggerated backlash. The Hai’a proposed a ban against women sitting outside cafes and restaurants. There are also some who prefer women to be with a male relative in family sections. It’s meant as a concern for a woman’s safety, but comes at an inconvenient price. And if implemented, rumors such as the cancellation of classes at gyms will impact women‘s fitness. These are in spaces where men aren’t allowed! These initiatives are dangerously close to crossing the line between the personal and private. 8

So You’re Thinking About Driving in Jeddah? Good Luck! By Rayan Khayat
Driving in Jeddah isn’t really that different than driving anywhere else - you just need to remember a completely different set of rules...that are more like anti-rules. For some, the notion of driving here is a daunting task and for others, well it’s still pretty daunting, but there can be some perks. Unfortunately, there’s plenty of blame to go around, from others’ reckless habits, the rocky urban blueprint or the lack of strict traffic laws. All of these obstacles can be discouraging - but there are ways around it. This is a guide for those who are new to driving in this bumpy and crowded metropolis.
16 DESTINATION JEDDAH
The first issue is the lack of stop signs within the neighborhoods, every intersection feels like a death trap! (almost) Intersection accidents are some of the most common, so practicing inching towards a clearer view of who’s speeding across is vital. Also please avoid hitting that large purple garbage bin that’s basically in the middle of the road. So once you make it to your first 15-minute stop at a light, (you will still need to stop when it’s red, this isn’t Cairo) you’ll notice drivers tend to keep passing once it turns red for a few seconds longer than usual. So don’t feel too bad if you reach the front (finally!) and don’t want to wait for another round, just go for it. What also usually happens in packed streets is that drivers jam their cars wherever there’s space if it means getting ahead. A solid rule to remember is that everybody is trying to get to their destination as fast as possible -- no matter
what needs to be done. So cars will swerve around and inconveniently make their way ahead of you. You can honk your anger out, so be sure to make it last a few seconds longer so the message is clear. *BOOMPOWW* What was that?! Yeah you didn’t see that pothole when you were angrily distracted, but wait, you can miss the one up ahead. Nice. Unfortunately, there’s a ton of them all over the city, so keep an eye out and slow down. Just as irritating are the speed bumps, there are no specific sizes or designated areas where they’re placed, so be sure to watch out and remember where they are. As you head to your destination, you’ll notice that drivers tend to avoid using their turn signals, but that’s no excuse for you to become lazy with your signaling. Once you’ve made your way along a main roadcontinuously moving main road like
DESTINATION JEDDAH 17
a main road like Malik or Medina, you might be driving behind someone who is smoothly just drifting across the lanes, or hastily zigzagging between cars. Safest thing to do is to solidly keep moving in your lane (even if it’s an imaginary one) as close to your next turn. *FLASH* you just got a ticket for speeding by the way, yeah, that’s how they get you. So stay under 100km on the main roads to avoid paying a SR300-500 fine. Don’t be threatened by the speed mongering sports cars, it’s just not worth it. Thinking ahead is essential here, don’t be one of those who decide to turn left when they’re in the far right of a four lane street and end up making a horribly inconvenient multi-lane change at the last minute - although you are bound to encounter others doing this. When facing a congested roundabout, make sure you enter at the right moment. Place yourself as close to the middle and progressively make your way into the outer lane as you go around. This method prevents cars from cutting in front of you and it prevents you from doing so to others. You don’t want to be like those two across the street standing in the sun
arguing about who ran into whom! If you find yourself in an accident, insurance company Najm is the best way to go. They’ll show up fairly quickly and efficiently assess the damage and inform you of your next steps. When you’ve almost reached your destination and you need to take the service road, like on a freeway, no one will stop and give way, you must tactfully merge at the right moment. So - you’re finally there! But you still need to park. Well guess what,
18 DESTINATION JEDDAH
one of the perks of driving in KSA is that you can basically park anywhere! Unless there’s a ’No Parking’ sign and as long as you’re not blocking anyone (which some kind folks sometimes do) but otherwise you’re good to go. It’s alright, you’ll get used to being a part of the chaos. As crazy as it sounds, driving in Jeddah is achievable. However last month, Arab News reported that the country loses a whopping SR81 billion annually because of road accidents. So it’s nowhere near close to being even almost sort of alright, it’s one of the largest developmental concerns. But for now, we still need
to make our way around the city and try maintaining a peace of mind while doing so. Sometimes you’ll find yourself reacting in ways you never have before, so for your own safety, try to stay calm when drivers don’t seem to be following any rules. And on that rare occasion when you’re on your way home late at night/early in the morning and there are barely any cars…you’re able to speed down Malik Rd without concern and release some of that stress while watching the sun rise over this madcap city. Learn more about Saudi Arabia’s plans for transportation development at : http://arabnews.com/economy/article550230.ece and be a part of the traffic updates at: 6areegak.com (with a phone app. available) and of course the number for Najm: 920-000-560

20 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Much like the Saudi oil boom of the 1970s, the current population boom of Saudi Arabia is having a tremendous effect on the local economy. According to the most recent Labor Ministry estimations, unemployment among Saudis is a little over 10 percent, while youth unemployment is as much as four times greater than that in some age brackets. The Population Reference Bureau reveals that of the country’s 24 million people, 43 percent are under the age of 15. Government initiatives and policies to curb its growing unemployment rate, such as “Saudization”—a governmental policy that stipulates a specific Saudi-to-expatriate ratio for all private companies, are in full force. Saudi Arabia is encouraging the growth of its private sector in order to diversify its oil-based economy and employ more Saudi nationals. According to the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) website, the result is governmental focus on employing Saudi’s large youth population, which “generally lacks the education and technical skills the private sector needs.” Therefore, education and labor market reform are the foremost challenges facing the country today. Fortunately, we have various nonprofits organizations emerging to help the burgeoning population. One of the most successful to date—INJAZ-Saudi Arabia, works to fill the gap between the education system and workforce readiness by harnessing the mentorship of Arab business leaders to help inspire a culture of entrepreneurialism and business innovation among Arab youth. Destination Jeddah got a unique chance to sit with Mr. Nael Fayez, CEO of INJAZ-SA, to talk about the amazing strides his organization has made over the past few years and the positive effect it is having on fostering the Saudization of a growing workforce. Destination Jeddah: First off, congratulations! According to the annual statistics published by Junior’s Achievement
Winning student company “Catalyst” with the Minister Of Education H.H. Prince Faisal Bin Abdullah Al-Saud
Worldwide, INJAZ-Saudi Arabia ranked #5 globally out of the 126 JAW member nations (as well as garnering the highest growth rate in the MENA Region of INJAZ Al Arab). What attributed to this mass growth?
Nael Fayez: This is mainly because of the urgent need that Saudi faces at these special times. At this time of growing unemployment, there is a need for the youth to start their own business and a greater need for the Saudi female to enter the job market. This, coupled with the enormous support that INJAZ-Saudi Arabia is receiving from its board companies and the Ministry of Education, made this growth happen. DJ: How has the partnership with the Ministry of Education further cultivated INJAZ-Saudi Arabia’s mission to eradicate the gap between the educational system and workforce readiness?
NF: The Ministry of Education (MoE) is a key enabler and the most important partner that allows INJAZ-SA to access schools around the Kingdom. The MoE today realizes the role that INJAZ-SA plays and the mission it aims to reach by preparing Saudi youth for the economy. DJ: Living in a non-secular society, where religion is almost indistinctly intertwined in everything, from our politics to our business methods (i.e. Islamic banking); are the courses/workshops secular, or do they tend to incorporate religion-based didactic lecturing?
NF: Not really. Actually as all of INJAZ-SA
programs are positioned as a direct response to the needs of the Saudi private sector, we totally believe that most skills are neither nationality nor religion-based. These are the skills demanded by the global economy, skills such as: teamwork, financial literacy and communication skills. DJ: Please tell us more about the professionals conducting these workshops: Are they volunteers or does INJAZ-Saudi Arabia use its acquired funds to pay them? Are they local or do you tend to recruit them from abroad? What kinds of backgrounds do the majority of them come from—business management, psychology, or industry-specific?
NF: Our volunteers are our pride; they are the vital tool that delivers our programs to more than 20,000 students on a daily basis across the Kingdom. All of them are private sector volunteers that donate their time to pass their knowledge and experience. They come from various industries in order to give the students a prospective about the various sectors of the Saudi economy. DJ: The program started as a pilot project under National Commercial Bank (NCB). Does the program continue to focus on that sector, or has it been able to diversify itself since its official inception?
NF: As NCB was the pioneer in bringing the program to Saudi, today INJAZ-SA is an independent entity with a separate management and budget. Board companies today are: NCB, The Savola Group, Abdul
DESTINATION JEDDAH 21
Latif Jameel Ltd., and the Banawi Industrial Group. Furthermore, ISA enjoys a wide and diversified array of partnership with more than 35 entities.
witnessing more applications at TVTC and more growing buy-in to various development employment concepts, such as part-time jobs and seasonal employments.
DJ: Speaking of its inception, INJAZ-Saudi Arabia was recently established in 2007, making the program still fairly new. How are longitudinal studies being executed to assess the effectiveness of these programs once completed and translated into “real world” application?
NF: Actually, we started running as soon as we were born, so to speak, due to the urgent times that our country is facing that are related to our mission; demand and need for our existing and future programs by major stakeholders in the country. It gives us a great comfort and assurance that today we have working agreements with MoE, MoHE, MoL and SAGIA. DJ: INJAZ-Saudi Arabia delivers educational programs on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness to the Saudi youth, ages between 10 – 24 years. In your experience, do you believe more needs to be done? For example, in terms of complimentary courses that are part of our schools’ syllabi, parental involvement, or even perhaps, initiating such initiatives from a younger age?
NF: By realizing the importance and urgency of preparing our youth for the job markets and enhancing their work readiness, we can easily conclude that this is a national agenda, where all involved parties and entities should come together and join efforts. This includes a robust private – public partnership with the genuine support of all social segments. DJ: Unlike most societies, Saudi Arabia often employs foreign labor for entry-level jobs that could otherwise provide an ideal context for our youth to learn the fundamentals of work ethic and business acumen. With Saudization in full gear, have you witnessed a change in this approach from both (or neither) the companies and/or the youth?
NF: Most definitely, as we are witnessing a major shift in the areas of relations and legislatives. Nevertheless, we are witnessing a huge social shift in the mind-set, we are 22 DESTINATION JEDDAH
DJ: Is there a reason why the courses are centered on either private or social entrepreneurship? Does the program plan to incorporate workshops that prepare the student to be an employee rather than an employer?
NF: Actually, all of INJAZ-SA programs that are delivered starting at grade 5 to the 2nd year of the university level revolve around JA’s three pillars: Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy and Work Readiness. All of these skills and exposure to opportunities will equip Saudi youth with the skills necessary to either start their own business or to have better employment opportunities. DJ: The INJAZ-Saudi Business Leaders Campaign, which aims to engage the heads of at least 20 leading companies in 20 Jeddah schools around the Kingdom to transfer their knowledge to over 660 students, appears to be a great initiative! Please tell us more about it and perhaps, some case studies? What is the duration and level of involvement? Is there follow-up between these mentors and the students?
NF: This is a campaign that aims to showcase success and inspire masses of youth by highlighting local success stories in a firsthand encounter by having businessmen and women inside the classroom. The structure of the campaign is to have 30 business leaders in 30 class rooms in 30 days. This campaign is scheduled to take place in the month of March 2012. Last year, HRH Princess Sittah bint Abdullah Al Saud, daughter of King Abdullah, participated in the campaign at a local public high school.

HERE COME SAUDI ARABIA’S ECONOMIC HEROES A Passion for the Possible By Anne Habiby. Co-CEO of AllWorld Network
Successful economies around the world are marked by a strong identifying characteristic: the presence of dynamic entrepreneurs. Why is this? Because dynamic entrepreneurs bring to life new ideas and create new possibilities. They have a relentless passion for what’s possible. Their products change the way we live, but their limitless passion gives shape to a country’s character. Imagine the US without Walt Disney (Disney) and Steve Jobs (Apple), the UK without Richard Branson (Virgin Industries) and Anita Roddick (The Body Shop), France without Coco Chanel (Chanel), or Sweden without Ingvar Kamprad (IKEA). These iconic entrepreneurs and many more like them inspired millions. There is a new wave of entrepreneurs popping up in Saudi Arabia. These men and women dream of creating new things; Jeddah in particular is bubbling with entrepreneurial energy. At the Global Summit on Entrepreneurship in Istanbul on December 5, 2011, the AllWorld Network announced the first Arabia Fast Growth 500. The Arabia 500 is the region's first look at one of the most important segments of the economy - fast growing entrepreneurial companies. We were not looking for the largest players; we were looking for the most dynamic…rising young companies that could become the next big companies. In 2009, AllWorld began its work in the region by creating the Saudi Fast Growth 100. The entrepreneurs we met were so 24 DESTINATION JEDDAH
dynamic, they made us wonder what we might find in the rest of the Gulf, in Palestine, Egypt, Tunisia, and beyond. What if there were hundreds and thousands of growing and creative entrepreneurs already on the ground? It would really change perceptions about the potential of the region. After three years of work covering 15 countries, we proudly presented The Arabia 500. These entrepreneurs come from across Saudi Arabia, the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and Pakistan. These amazing companies are defying economic gravity, some growing 62% a year in the face of global recession and building new ideas and companies in challenging local circumstances.
A Window into Saudi Arabia’s Future The forty Saudi winners of the Arabia500 are entrepreneurs covering a wide range of industries from technology, to social media, to logistics, to health care, and are quickly beoming the sucssessful businesses of the future. The top three fastest growing Saudi companies tell an interesting story in themselves. In first place is the elctronics and gaming store Zonic, growing an astonishing 1,655% since 2008. In just a few years, Zonik has become a well-known brand in the Kingdom drawing tech-savvy youths to its 110 entertainment-themed stores. Zonik’s motto ‘the pulse of life’ is on vivid display in its stores where customers access the latest technologies at kiosk stations, Wii play areas, and gaming rooms in a colorful ambiance that has won many interior design and display awards.

There was great anticipation before the winner was announced – Rumman Company. When CEO Enas Hashani approached the stage to receive the prize, no one anticipated the reaction - a two-minute standing ovation from the proud audience! As I sat in the women’s section, overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the men, I heard young women around me saying “One day I will be on that stage too.” I write this story against Enas’ wishes, but I tell it to audiences all around the world and to you in order to make the point that in each one of us is the ability to inspire change. We never know when it will happen, and sometimes it is by large actions that take years, and sometimes by small actions that take minutes. The spirit of the entrepreneur is to step out into the void, not knowing what will happen, but believing in the best. One

of the greatest descriptions of an entrepreneur comes from Dr. Aisha Natto of Eye 2 Eye Optical who said “an entrepreneur is a brave dreamer that wants to change reality.” The spirit of an entrepreneur is the spirit of creators, explorers and inventors. They have in them the DNA of hope, and the abiding belief that the best ideas are ahead of us. We at AllWorld salute each one of the pioneering Saudi entrepreneurs, and we look forward to recognizing them again when they take the stage for the GCC 100 in Bahrain on February 8-9, 2012 at an Awards Ceremony hosted by AllWorld and the global investment firm Arcapita.

JEDDAH’S FUTURE DESIGNERS DAH Interior Design Exhibition By Rayan Khayat
Under the auspices of Bakur Bin Laden, the Dar Al-Hekma Interior Design Exhibition celebrated 18 seniors’ creative accomplishments. The students were challenged to design new spaces that would pragmatically benefit the community and redesign some older, impaired spaces. Some of the innovative ideas included Ms. Ghada Al-Boug’s luxurious desert resort, Ms. Hiba Otaibi’s public transportation station and Ms. Haya Al-Maghrabi’s business and media center for young entrepreneurs. Awarded designs by Rawan Al-Wazna, Alaa Ainousa, Ruba Odeh and Rana Maad were truly impressive. RAWAN AL-WAZNA Historia Interior Public Plaza
RUBA ODEH SHARQ The Middle Eastern Musical Center
Lost from our increasingly congested and urban city are the wide, open spaces that were centers of the social community. Without having to resort to awkward outdoor activities, such as pavement picnics, imagine a large interior and outdoor public plaza where people can enjoy being outside with playgrounds, restaurants and a library. A space for members of the community to reconnect in a natural and leisurely environment.
A museum for Jeddah’s musical community with a professional performance space for the audience to truly experience the music. Its interior design embodies the raw qualities of traditional music in a modern environment, plus a music/poetry gallery, library, café and gift shop. ‘Sharq’ would be a place where people from around the world could enjoy learning about Middle Eastern music.

Yazeed Al-Rajhi A Champion With Character By Yousra Elwi
It takes true passion, conviction and courage to pursue your passion; Yazeed AlRajhi is an example of a gifted individual who has focused on success. Although most men have a fanatical obsession with cars and speed, this young rally champion has taken it to the next level by honing his distinctive talent and extending his potential and gradually gaining national, regional and global recognition for his rallying championships and sports achievements.
With more than 82,000 ‘Likes’ on his team’s Facebook page, there’s no doubt that this Riyadh-based champion is on the right track. Al-Rajhi hit the professional rally lanes in 2007, after years of practicing as an amateur. He started with Middle East rally championships, making it to first place in 2008 in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Success followed him in 2009, when he won first place in the Syria International Rally, and was amongst the top 3 in the Qatar and Lebanese International Rallies. After gaining experience from racing on desert and sandy gravel tracks, Al-Rajhi decided to dedicate 2010 and 2011 to broadening his exposure by joining European rallies. He trained in snow and mountainous rallies to sharpen his skills and perfect his performance; his goals were achieved when he made it to the top 5 in the Rallye Terre Cardabelles France gravel 32 DESTINATION JEDDAH
2011 and Espana Rally Championship. With holistic training and world-class expertise in his pocket, Al-Rajhi recently entered the 2012 Super 2000 World Rally Championship which kicks off from Sweden in February and ends in Spain in November. His participation will be the only Arab presence in this global championship; an added incentive for him to place amongst the top positions! His current vehicle of success is the Ford Fiesta; Al-Rajhi has won numerous championships with it and will compete at the upcoming SWRC in it. In rallying, the relationship between the driver and the car is integral; there must be communication, understanding and responsiveness to have control and balance, and hence a high chance of winning. Yet for the vehicle to deliver peak performance, there must be a qualified trainer providing concrete guidance. Alexander, Al-Rajhi’s French trainer,
has been working alongside the national champion to develop his skills and explore new dimensions in this challenging sport. Determination, confidence and proactivity are strong traits in Al-Rajhi’s personality; these characteristics, combined with his progressive attitude, have claimed the attention of prominent national and international organizations. UNICEF was the first to recognize his support to humanitarian causes, selecting him as the first Saudi Goodwill Ambassador for the Gulf region in 2008. In the same year, he came in third position in the Mobily and Riyadiah ’Most Distinguished Athlete in Saudi Arabia’ competition; but his perseverance got him to first place by 2010. Al-Rajhi’s name also shines as Ambassador for Fighting Drugs in Saudi Arabia, as well as Ambassador for the anti-smoking non-profit organization, Naqa’a.
Pushing the limit is definitely Yazeed AlRajhi’s game, be it on the rally tracks or in social contributions. He continues to unleash his hidden potential by stretching his own finish line, and giving up is simply not in his vocabulary. When John Wooden said that “Winning takes talent, to repeat takes character”, he was definitely referring to Yazeed Al-Rajhi.

Have you ever thought of working with an interior designer but weren’t quite sure what they would do? Would you still have to hire a million other people to get the job done? Would you be forced to stick to the designer’s team and lose your freedom of choice? When you choose EuroDesign, you have the freedom to work with the designers at any or every stage of the interior design process, from design to implementation. They believe that the client must always be involved, not only in the design planning, but during the development process. So only you decide where the designer’s creative control ends and where yours begins. EuroDesign is equipped to provide the total solution: space-planning, a design concept, execution, as well as MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing), furniture supply and material selection. extensive process, EuroDesign offers a free service to help the client find the proper location, and once you’re ready to get started, they can hire the workers and movers. EuroDesign is an interior design firm in Jeddah that has enjoyed success for nearly a decade. Quite recently they have gone through a company facelift. With a renovated office space, motivated team and a fresher design aesthetic, general manager Badr Al-Sayed and chief interior architect and executive manager Rawan Batterjee are confident in the continuing success of EuroDesign. They aim to be the leader in design general contracting and construction services. Part of Asyad Holding Company, they specialize in offices and commercial spaces. They’ve completed banks, corporate offices and even restaurants and are open to working on residential properties, which they
have done occasionally and with remarkable results. EuroDesign is frequently asked to create a comfortable and professional space, so their design aesthetic is typically clean and functional. Arch. Batterjee has recently spoken about the issues business owners face when trying to design a space. Some clients go along with the many unqualified contractors here in Jeddah, who lack the proper certifications, company portfolio, proof of insurance, performance bond and a performance
guarantee. According to Batterjee, “a qualified
contractor shows a safety plan, mobilization plan and method statements. Without these regulatory procedures, several mistakes are overlooked and will not be revealed till months later. Unfortunately, by this time, the contractors are long gone and refuse to take responsibility for the matter. At EuroDesign, our respect for our clients and our work is long term and that’s why the technical elements are crucial.” She went on
to explain how they are dedicated to research and integrating the design’s requirements into a solid design through a systematic and coordinated technique. These technicalities are a primary concern at EuroDesign, who work rigorously to excel in function, form and style. Accommodating clients is always at the center of their
business, with the technical elements providing the foundation for all their work. EuroDesign always does exactly what the clients want, such as when a client has something specific in mind and the job is to implement or enhance it. Other jobs require that they fully work on the design of the place. However, EuroDesign has come across requests that are not viable, like wanting too many people to work in a small space that is not realistic. EuroDesign then helps them come up with the best possible solution considering their space, lighting, and the functionality of the place. Their aim is to give the highest quality workspace that gives workers the best possible place to work. Within EuroDesign, the company’s goals for the team are clear and sincere. In addition to loyalty, trust and honesty, they want employees to truly believe that
“we work here because we love working here.” Team members are encouraged to
grow as the company grows, work as a team, continuously learn, and reach their targets. Above all, EuroDesign is focused on maintaining client happiness and satisfaction. The internationally acclaimed Edge of Arabia finally comes back to Saudi Arabia and has its much anticipated and first ever show in Jeddah. The arts initiative has been creating wildly successful contemporary exhibitions of some of the best artists across the country. This time, they hope to ignite some debate with the theme ‘We Need to Talk.’ The artists created pieces celebrating, criticizing and that shed light onto key topics within the framework of Saudi Arabia’s past, present and future. Held at the Al-Furusiya Marina, the opening event was attended by patrons and passionate enthusiasts of Jeddah’s art community. An old corniche style ice-cream truck was placed outside under green neon lights and the inside looked like a run down warehouse with shabby gray concrete walls; a deconstructive aesthetic for a deconstructive theme. The excited guests were huddled in groups discussing the pieces with the artists. Attendee Dr. Walid Fitehi commented that “each individual has a god given gift, and when society allows them to express themselves that’s when we start seeing the creativity,” and that’s exactly what curator Mohammad Hafiz aims to do with Edge of Arabia.
44 DESTINATION JEDDAH
It was apparent that there were no limitations on the medium of the artworks, anything goes and the artists were liberally innovative. Ahmad Angawi created ‘Street Pulse,’ a gigantic ball of microphones with headphones coming out emitting conversations and debates by people from across the city. An interactive installation that serves as a reminder that there is a willingness to hear what everyone has to say. His father, architect Dr. Sami Angawi said “It’s the right show at the right time” as others have created works inspired by the Arab Spring and other social changes. Abdullah Gharem has several installations commenting on the flawed ways the professional community deals with social and political problems. Sami Al-Turki has also taken photographs on some of the unprofessionalism of recent generations. He also exhibited a revealing series of photographs from his time among migrant workers in Dubai. And Hamza Serafi’s world carpet installation was an urgent warning to citizens of the world to not walk all over their land.

Jawhara Al-Saud’s manipulated photographs embody the polarizing dichotomy of life and art and this conflict was evident in other works as well. Some had negative outlook towards excess technologies and developments. Effat Fadag’s golden shovel sculpture embodies the double edged sword of increased growth and wealth. Eyad Maghzali created a dark orange sculpture of a baby of the future entirely dependent on technology. Sara Abu Abdullah’s graffiti sign post is suspicious reaction to new urban infrastructure around Makkah’s Holy Mosque. And Saddek Wasil created a sculpture embodying the impersonal relationships of technology, similarly Adwa Al-Mubarak’s 3D prints compares what we do now to gain someone trust with the past. The environment was not forgotten by Ibrahim Abumsmar and his cardboard birdhouses, showing the irony of the uses of wood. Mostly in the future section and hoping for change, were some artists

concerned with women’s issues. There were large toppling prayer beads hung from the wall with the full names of women on each bead, Manal Al-Dowayan protests the irrational embarrassment of men sharing the names of their female relatives. And Sarah Abdullah filmed a video of her painting a broken down car in frustration to not having the freedom to drive it. Mostly in the past section were pieces that were odes to aesthetics of Saudi culture and its religious and social traditions. Ahmad Mater from Aseer has a few pieces in the show, one being the massive cowboy code assembled with plastic gun caps. Maha Mullah’s uses vintage motifs contemporarily presented and Mohammad Al-Ghamdi’s chaotic and dark mixed-media piece remembers a lost power that must be reclaimed. Nasser Al-Salam created a charming minimalist piece that’s a reminder of the way Bedouins lived. And Ayman
Yossri Daydban’s different pieces focus on the strength of Islam, its acceptance of diversity, and the beauty of ihram sheets. The youngest participant, Ahaad Al-Amoudi, placed boxes of mud in a perfect golden ratio as reminder that God has created humans from mud in the most perfect form. After the show, the artists and attendees moved to the education room to learn more about the initiative and then to the wide outdoor balcony to enjoy Jeddah’s recently refreshing weather and further discuss the topics brought up. The Edge of Arabia group has succeeded in professionally creating a show unmatched in its presentation and achieving an atmosphere of serious exchange with its thought provoking art. The show goes on from Jan 20th to Feb 19th. The battle of the sexes has begun! We are seeing more and more of this beautifully cut ensemble on the red carpet and on the streets on both men and women. You can’t look more smart, elegant and sexy than in an exquisitely tailored suit! Men’s fashion trends are greatly different to women’s, and their cycle moves much slower, therefore buying a quality piece of workmanship is a worthwhile investment as you will be able to wear it for many years to come. Whatever style you choose and however you choose to wear it, stand out from the crowd with this marvelously masculine look!

Kick Zone
So Much More Than a Sports Café By Mariam Polding
Tucked away behind Tahlia Street in the spanking-new promenade, Solidaire, debuts the Saudi-born sports café concept, Kick Zone. Venturing away from the clichéd décor ubiquitous to sports cafes i.e., signed memorabilia, autographed jerseys and replica trophies, Kick Zone is so much more than just a sports café. Kick starting the café scene up to a whole new zone, step into a sports café that will woo you as much with their edgy interior décor as their attention to their food. Birdies flying-high in the foyer,( the kind you smack with a badminton racket,) while 23,000 tennis balls serve as a backdrop to a score of flat-screens, it’s aesthetically clear how Kick Zone became the sole KSA nomination for the prestigious 2011 European Design Awards. Owned by Abdallah Mohamed Baroom Sons Group, with Mr. Fahd Hachem acting as the Concept Developer and Head of Restaurants Division, Kick Zone has paid attention to every detail, from the custommade Vitra chairs to the extra-long, soft leather booths. Seating like this is more usually found in a bachelor pad or family game-room than a public space. Menu offerings include juicy, imported U.S. Angus beef burgers, shaved goat cheese atop 64 DESTINATION JEDDAH
a musically seasoned salad with crunchy pecans and crispy green apples, and super zesty buffalo wings that taste better when eaten with your hands! On the sweeter-side, fluffy carrot-cake, the kind your grandmother makes, and the double chocolate cake with chocolate ice-cream are not to be missed! This is the sports café for couples and families as much as it is for singles. He’ll finally get away with watching his favorite game, while she is distracted by the swanky décor and delicious fare. IT’S A GUY THING By Dalya Bajunaid
Whether guys are out on a quick lunch break, or just want to kick back and relax before heading home, these places have built a name for themselves amongst Jeddah’s men. Providing overall experiences and ambiance for men-dominated space, the options are to either chill out or to dine and dash. Here are some local favorite hang-outs…sorry, ladies, but most of these places are ‘Singles Only/Men Only’ or are frequented by a majority male clientele. There are enough family-friendly and ‘Ladies Only’ places in Jeddah, so what’s wrong with giving men some space to be…men?
Traditional:
Places like Abu Zaid, Al-Garmooshi, and Bane’ma specializing in fool, maasoub, and mutabag; they have built a loyal following among old and young Saudis alike. With unique offerings like fool with melted ghee and cumin, they are attracting patrons from all over the Middle East. Arguably the best fool and tamees that you can have is at Bane’ma; truly a hidden gem in Jeddah. Located in Salamah District near the Casa Blanca Hotel, this family-owned restaurant has been serving locals for over 30 years. Hijazi breakfast is an indulgent treat at an affordable price. However, if its lunch you’re looking for, tucked away in AlBalad is Al-Soddah, a Yemeni restaurant that has stuck to its roots despite all of the changes that have taken place. Diners sit on the floor in front of piles and piles of flavorful rice with marinated meat falling of the bone, and the best part…no silverware! A true cultural experience.

Seafood:
A vibrant part of Jeddawi culture is a love for seafood. Being located so close to the Red Sea means that we have a true abundance of exotic fish where elsewhere, one might have to pay top price for such delights. With our passion for fish embedded in our roots, Al-Anbariya, located north of Jeddah, is popular for its quality seafood and traditional setting. Most go for the traditional Sayadiya, which is where you have a fish of your choosing, marinated in spices, deep fried (yes, deep fried), and served on a bed of rice cooked with aromatics. If you don’t feel up to loading all of the kids into the car for what can be considered a road trip, you can enjoy a decent sayadiya meal at Sayadiya Express. With branches at Sultan Mall, Red Sea Mall, and Andalus Mall, this place attracts locals from all over town. Other top spots like Al-Anbariya include Alsharah and Sutlana. People enjoy the great food with the added attraction of private rooms to have complete freedom to kick back, watch TV, play cards etc. The area close to Dorat Al-Arous in north Jeddah is also well-known for a cluster of seafood restaurants – try them all before settling on a favorite!
Business Lunch:
Business lunches are tricky. You have to provide quality food suitable for executive professionals while sticking to their time constraints. There was a time when Yildizlar was one of the only good Lebanese/Turkish restaurants in Jeddah that managed to do this. Today, packed with businessmen on their lunch breaks, this place has remained a landmark in Jeddah for the tastiest Mixed Grill and freshest sambousas. Still located on Andalus St., it is ideal for a quick bite, right near Uptown 966. These restaurants tend to be dominated by families in the evenings, while businessmen make up their primary lunch crowd. Formerly Casper & Gambini’s, Uptown 966 has re-vamped its old menu offering many new items while sticking to its favorites. If you’re looking for something a little heartier, the popular Steak House offers an All-You-Can-Eat Salad Bar with your order of steak. Very efficient if you are on a lunch break as you can begin munching as soon as you place your order. Goodies and Byblos fall into this category as reliable eateries catering to both singles and families. DESTINATION JEDDAH 67
Munch and Watch:
One of the most popular trends nowadays is newer hang-outs for guys after a long day at the office. Comfortable sofas, flat screen televisions (which you can take control of, by the way), and a commitment to good service. Unlike most places, where you have to constantly look around for the ‘shisha guy’, you and you nargila will be welltaken care of by the friendly and prompt staff at Titanium and Break Time. With proper ventilation and snacks that won’t fill you up, we can see why so many spend a lot of time here. Many comments about these place is that it is an actual addiction… spoiling you by setting the standard in shisha service. Conveniently located by Danube Tahlia, it’s perfect to unwind and clear your head. Living up to its name, Break Time is the place to go and hang out with your friends and ‘break’ from all of the stresses of the day and enjoy a lazy evening. Of course we have to include newcomers like Kick Zone, and standbys Millennium, Burivag, and Beaux Arts…the list goes on!
Coffee Places:
With many coffee places constantly popping up like mushrooms, probably the most popular are the ones located in Attallah Center on the Cornish. Starbucks, Costa Coffee, Coffee Republic and even Teayana offer high quality coffee and looseleaf tea. Located right across the Red Sea, it’s a perfect place to kill a couple of hours, enjoy the sunset and get the most out of this amazing winter. With Wi-Fi, outdoor seating, and a spectacular view, you are sure to spend hours just relaxing and enjoying the various items that are offered. From the ever-popular, Caramel Macchiato at Starbucks to more adventurous Fererro Rocher Shake at Coffee Republic, you are bound to discover a new favorite. Mystery Diner A Real Welcome Marhaba Restaurant
Hidden behind Chili’s restaurant and across the road from the US Consulate in Al Hamra is a long established Pakistani cuisine favorite. Marhaba Restaurant is in a dated building and decorated in neutral, 1980’s kitsch which has yet to come back into fashion. My gastronomic expectations were not unduly raised; I was only expecting generic Pakistani food which would qualify as ‘ethnic’ in name alone, but in reality would not be cooked with the level of authenticity and individual care that each dish actually demands. I ordered the daily lunch buffet which offered a wide range of dishes that looked appetizing. The velvet or cream soups should be avoided and the salads were only a slightly better choice. However the entrees were much more interesting. My first round included a delicious Masoor Dhaal, a flavourful Bhindi Masala, with a well spiced and moist Chiken Tikka accompanied by papadums and three typesof Naan bread (the Butter Naan was my favorite). I was nicely surprised because the dishes had been cooked with individual care and each taste was distinctive and well executed. Could there be more surprises to come?! Round 2 consisted of an aromatic Mutton Khardha Masala, a highly spiced Achar
Chicken and a disappointing Chicken Biryani which was bland for such a renowned dish. My round 3 was made up of a generic Chicken Oyster, tangy Chicken wings and plain rice – a let down after the earlier zesty flavors, and I enjoyed the fresh lime 7-Up which is a standard Pakistani drink when dining out. I have to mention how much I appreciated the high quality of the staff; they were welcoming, courteous, knowledgeable about the food, and eager to please. I simply asked for some chilies and was supplied with five different kinds, including freshly fried and masala-filled chilies! Three desserts were on offer and I tried them all. The Kheer (rice pudding) was pleasantly satisfying and the Lokhi (squash) Halwa was freshly made, but a little on the sweet side. Fresh fruit salad rounded out the dessert buffet. Although I was a little apprehensive upon entering, I have to say that I walked away from Marhaba feeling very well satisfied and with a newfound respect for this ‘golden oldie’. To experience a true Pakistani welcome, check out Marhaba Restaurant. Lunch Buffet SR50 / Drink SR6 Tel :+966 2 667 5174/668 2523 Location: Al Magreb Street Al Hamra District

Indo Mix at Papaya
The Indo Mix at Papaya is an authentic Indonesian dish sure to satisfy any appetite that appreciates the spiciness and flavors of Asian cuisine. It’s a combination plate of a variety of dishes with basmati rice as the basis. There’s the shrimp sambal, the shrimps are cooked with red chilies, garlic, onions and lemongrass. The beef rendang is chunks of beef cooked and slowly simmered with a variety of oriental spices and coconut gravy. The curry chicken with potato cubes cooked in curry spices. Then the crispy sliced beef and fried potato chips tossed with coriander and a side of kurupuk (shrimp crackers). It’s a hearty dish with perfect portions for one or perhaps two. It might not be like anything you have tried before, but it’s not far from any of your favorite Arabic stews or Asian dishes and a great start to getting into East Asian food. Sometimes it’s just too easy to go to the gym your friend goes to, but you might feel like perhaps there’s another one around town that would best suit you and maybe even be better for your friend. Some of them have fun classes you wouldn’t find anywhere else or a proper restaurant and business center so you can go around your work schedule. The best thing about all the new gyms and fitness centers popping UP are the different options, some are more spa oriented and some are all about martial arts. However, it can be hassle doing the research and keeping track of each one’s offers and facilities and you might overlook some negative factors that you’ll face when it’s too late. So for this Men’s issue, we’ve complied some information on some of the best gyms in Jeddah for men as a start for beginners or even for those considering switching.

Q&A
Beauty Tip !
Q: When I shave, my skin easily gets burned, bumpy and red. What can I do to avoid this issue and have soft & clear skin after a shave?
Slept late and have an important meeting in the morning? Fight those raccoon eyes by dabbing on some preparation H on those irritating eye bags. It works like magic!
What’s New?
‘The Special One’ Braun Series 7! Try using glycerin or aloe-based shaving cream or gel. These ingredients will soothe your skin and allow your razor to easily glide across your face. For best results, massage the cream or gel into your beard, then shave towards the growth of your hair, then if necessary, against it. Finish with a soothing aftershave balm and a daily moisturizer. Avoid alcoholbased aftershaves as they can be irritable.
Splurge or Save
Shaving is one the most common and most important “beauty tasks” for men. To get the right shave you need the best shaving cream. I LOVE: MAC’s Shave Cream SR85 My husband loves this stuff as it makes shaving easier and leaves the skin super soft. Available at MAC Stores: Red Sea Mall, Mall of Arabia & Thalia Center. Is Your Local Barber Shop Safe?
WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
By Nilo Haq
Barbers should dispose of blades after first use by placing them in separate trashcans. Used blades are hazardous to your health and can endanger cleaners that might come across them accidently. Most good barbershops will spray cologne and then burn with a lighter to ensure sanitation right before your shave.
:
There seems to be a barbershop on every corner in Jeddah. Barbershops are a flourishing business that offer a variety of services here in KSA including haircuts, shaves, trims, facials, hair dyes, face wax, hamam magrabi, full massages and manicure/pedicures. The usual cost for a men’s haircut is SR 10 and the price range for shaving varies from SR 10 to SR 25. Most of the local barbershops stay open as late as midnight. There are many different nationality barbers who come from Turkey, Egypt, Bangladesh, Philippines or Pakistan. The Turkish and the Egyptians usually fight for the best title.
Foot Spas should be thoroughly cleaned and rinsed after each client Manicure and Pedicure tools, razor blades and files should be disposable Products with pumps prevent crosscontamination compared to open jars and containers.
When applicable the staff should be wearing facemasks to avoid the transmission of germs. Staff should be cleaning and disinfecting tools between clients with appropriate disinfectants. Use of disposable tools and towels when possible.
If a barbershop is using un-sanitized equipment or tools on you, it can be harmful to your health by spreading germs, infections and diseases. It is good to know that Jeddah barbershops have now incorporated new health precautions for safer, enjoyable and cleaner barbershops. Shops will be reported and fined without hesitation for any violations.
Staff should be seen regularly washing their hands Hair Brushes should be sanitized in a hair sanitizer (a box with a blue light). Combs should be dipped in a blue liquid sanitizer.

WaterBalloonLuminaries
A fun and easy project to light up your nights!
Welcome guests in a fun, festive style.
You Will Need:
High-Melt Paraffin Wax (IGI 1260) Party Balloons Double Boiler Cookie Sheet
Directions: 1. Fill a balloon with tepid water. 2. Melt your wax. Optimum working
temperature for this project is 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Try to maintain this temperature for your wax while working. Add a few drops of food coloring to create colorful luminaries. 3. Slowly dip your balloon into the wax to just below the water level in the balloon. Warning: Do not dip the balloon into the wax past the water level. This could cause the balloon to pop. 4. Hold the balloon in the wax for a few seconds, and then slowly lift it out of the wax. Dip the balloon a few more times, allowing some time between dips to let the wax cool and
build up layers. 5. While it is still quite warm, carefully set the balloon down onto a piece of a cookie sheet, making sure it is level. This will create a flat bottom for the luminary. 6. Dip your balloon a few more times until it is the desired thickness. A good target thickness is 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch. 7. Set the balloon on the paper or cookie sheet again and let it cool. 8. When the wax is completely cooled, hold the balloon over a sink or bucket, facing away from you. Carefully pop the balloon with a knife and let the water drain out. Throw away the balloon shards. 9. To level the top of the luminary, heat a cookie sheet on the stove and place the luminary top-down onto the hot sheet and carefully melt the edges until it is level. 10. Place a tea light or votive inside the luminary - enjoy the glow!

BASSEM AL-KASSABI
YOUSEF KURASHI
“Skull 2011 ink’d” Headphone : It’s super light! Great bass that doesn’t blow your teeth off your face (if turned up to the right volume). The iPod’s bass booster is unnecessary when using them. Great sound and durable unless you break it yourself and the list goes on and on. I’ve had the bass and volume turned up all the way since I got it and it’s running as good as new. Amen to Skull Candy. Available at Virgin Megastore for a cool SR 79.
When it comes to sushi, I can pretty much eat the variety. The “Volcano” is especially an intense maki at Sushi Yoshi that I particularly enjoyed trying. The Volcano is rice covered maki with some wasabi and horseradish on top. Once I ate it, my tastebuds just went up in flames! I can handle one piece, but if I take a second (even in full horseradish) my body may go magma. Adventurous sushi lovers should give it a shot, but eat at your own risk!
