You are more beautiful than the commercials lead you to think Dove’s global “Real Beauty” campaign takes the cake in creative advertisement with their short yet meaningful videos. This April Dove released “Real Beauty Sketches,” a video that went viral instantly. Gil Zamora, an FBI-trained forensic artist, wants to reveal to women that they are more beautiful than they think. Separated from them with a curtain, Gil asks women to describe their facial features in detail while he draws them. Then he asks a complete stranger who spent the day with these same women to describe them as well. The result is two sketches: the selfdescribed image is less attractive while the other is more accurate, and in some cases happier. The video ends with the message: “You are more beautiful than you think.”
Launched in 2004 after market research suggested that only four percent of women truly consider themselves beautiful, Dove’s global marketing campaign challenges traditional beauty commercials by aiming to completely redefine beauty. Dove embraces a more natural, un-airbrushed beauty and actually launched a video in 2006 that focused on the ridiculous amount of photo-shop that changes everything from the shape of a model’s eyes to the length of her neck. The ad ends with one radical line: “No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted.” Dove’s attempt to steer their promotional campaigns from the typical to the ethical cannot be left unappreciated as they promote their products alongside self-esteem. Now if only the entire beauty industry would follow suit.

Abdul Latif Jamil’s Act of Kindness
“No kind action ever stops with itself. One kind action leads to another...” –Amelia Earhart. Acts of kindness are never wasted. The world is still a good place filled with kind and generous people. When someone does good, another person will surely follow. As a charitable act within the whole month of May, Abdul Latif Jamil (ALJ) was furnishing mosques throughout all cities in the Kingdom. ALJ encourages people to call their office at +96614642233 to recommend any mosque in need of furnishing. Destination Riyadh applauds ALJ’s initiative and hopes the spirit of giving spreads.

The Communications and Information Technology Commission
For quite some time now, students and frequent travelers have been enjoying the free callreceiving service provided to customers by STC and other telephone service providers. Customers benefited by affordably enjoying their time abroad without having to worry about costs made to contact family and friends. However, since April 26, 2013, telephone service providers announced the termination of this service due to implementing the decisions made by the Communications and Information Technology Commission.

Useful Information Settling In
A SIGNAL TO
BLOCK By Mansour Abdulghaffar
So you’ve just moved to Riyadh and finally got that car. Well think again before driving off. You’ll have to first unlearn everything you know and re-learn how to survive these streets!
Riyadh is full of highways and this makes for an “interesting” driving experience; I’ll get to that later. First and foremost, there is no rush hour. Rather, there’s “rush 15-hours” from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. Although, I admire that albeit moving at a turtle’s pace, traffic is never stationary thanks to Riyadh’s traffic flow management. Well done! Keep it up guys! In theory, driving on a highway should be stress-free. Unfortunately, this is not the case as adhering to speed limits, keeping to your lane, keeping a safe distance, using turn signals and planning ahead do not exist in Riyadh!
Here are some of my tips to staying safe on the streets: I’ve found that driving in the fast lane at the speed limit is not satisfactory for many who are in a hurry to get no-where fast and constantly get “flashed” to move. My advice is to stick to the middle lane. It’s fast enough and you’re closer to that exit you don’t want to miss! Speaking of getting flashed, this brings me to the second annoyance, which is tailgating. For many offensive drivers, tailgating is the primary method of choice to “ask” other 16 DESTINATION RIYADH
drivers to give way and move lanes. Not only is this dangerous, but it also forces you to break the speed limit to avoid being rear ended as there is usually a car blocking your car on the right. My advice is to switch on your turn signal, move only when safe and not get pressured into breaking the speed limit. Otherwise you’ll get caught by Sahir! I find that many drivers here have “evolved” to not use turn signals. Experience shows that if you wish to change lanes and there is a sufficient gap, the second you switch on your turn signal the gap will disappear all as if by magic! Although it may be tempting to hide your intentions, stay safe by letting those reckless drivers pass.
Unfortunately, many drivers practice their “stunt driving” by taking all five lanes at once just 200 meters before the exit! Pray they don’t cause a pileup and give them their space. In summary, my advice for driving in Riyadh (and Saudi!) is drive defensively, raise your guard and assume that you are the only licensed driver! Always buckle up and ensure that your lights are on at night; you’ll be shocked by the number of drivers who surprise you with their presence in your blind spot! If you see a driver drifting from lane to lane while chatting on his phone, give him a reality check with a couple of good honks!
This brings me to planning ahead. I cannot stress the importance of this, especially with impatient drivers blocking your way. Remember to make sure you know which exits you will take beforehand.

Useful Arabic Words &
Pronunciation
It’s known worldwide that pronunciation is one of the most challenging steps in learning different languages. For example, Arabic has many dialogues, slangs and accents. Some of these dialogues can’t be understood by all Arabs. The most common dialogue is the Egyptian dialogue and the Lebanese dialogue. In this article we attempt to shed some light on the traditional Saudi dialogue. To illustrate that, we added a picture of a throat to show the pronunciation of different Arabic letters.

Replace the setting and this could be a pitch for a standard Hollywood feel good blockbuster. Luckily for us, the creative industry in Saudi Arabia, after years of being stuck on a shelf has been blossoming. On the surface, the long standing art community has been gaining momentum, the art scene in Saudi’s main cities have been improving with beautiful new art galleries promoting Middle Eastern artists. Workshops and new artistic programs are being offered and are widely available and there is a steady media interest to keep the whole thing moving forward. Film making and photography have been on the rise with great talents being discovered and going international, as well as a large number of Youtube shows that have gained enough views to rival most television programs, with Saudis contributing more than 90 million views every day. Underground, a street art movement is being created with a number of artists and underground bands gaining recognition, in addition to guerrilla art and street installations popping up discreetly in the cities. And in the middle of it all, an intrepid game industry is being born. Here is where the heroes of our story come in. Khawariz Games is a development team in charge of creating one of the most entertaining retro style pixel games catered with the Arabic community in mind. The company is the brainchild of Omar AlOmeir and Khalid AlHaider, two freelancers doing graphic design and application development. Their enterprise began with the development team’s titular game, The Amazing Adventures of Frees, and they’ve made a couple more games since then, with a marked style that sets them apart. Omar currently works as a developer, designer and artist while Khalid handles the PR, marketing and website. With a background in freelancing, they had always wanted to make games and fulfill their goal of
providing the huge video game market here with “SOMETHING LOCAL WITH
EXCELLENT QUALITY.”
The fascinating aspect of these two’s ambitious quest in developing this game is that neither of them have had any previous academic experience in game design whatsoever. When put in comparison to the quality of the games being produced, the raw talent is evident. In The Amazing Adventures of Frees, a character named, to no one’s surprise, Frees, goes on a series of adventures to track stolen items. Instead of using a generic character for the action platform game, Omar decided to base the main character on a friend of his, thus providing a richer basis for character formation and a fresh new outlook you definitely feel when playing the game. Furthermore, as you win each level you are congratulated with a mabrook (congratulations in Arabic), which I thought was a pretty awesome and amusing touch. The game itself has a lovely retro Mario vibe to it, with a brilliant music soundtrack provided by a talented Saudi musician, Essam Alghamdi, who goes by the moniker of Agent Whiskers.
DESTINATION RIYADH 21
To be honest, what I find most admirable is the fact that the whole game was made locally, with an Arab audience in mind. With entirely Saudi talents behind it, collaborations such as this is a mark of the beautiful change we’ll be seeing in the talented Saudi community, as graphic designers, programmers, artists, photographers and musicians got together to create art. Beyond that, Khawariz Games continues to amaze with their relentless dedication to originality with They Came from the Sea, an arcade style game, where you play a courageous boy who tries to protect recently found eggs from giant cockroach/bug type monsters. The game, a competition entry for Game Tako’s latest Game Zanga competition, themed Lost, has already been gaining recognition from a few international blogs. A Bird’s Love, a Newgrounds Ludum Dare 26 entry, is a slightly addicting minimalistic game with one level and simple gameplay and a very sweet theme to it. (Played it six times in a row, you say? Who, me? Never!) Speaking of Game Tako, there’s a whole bucket of impressive out there for this Arabic game hosting website that has managed to provide a local platform for Arabic games and a push for developers to create with their regionally held Pan JEDDAH 22 DESTINATION RIYADH
Arabian GameJam, titled Game Zanga. Especially in view of the lack of support game developers face from national companies and media outlets, initiatives like this make a big difference. Truth be told, the region needs more people like Abdullah Hamed, the CEO of Game Tako, more creative powers like Omar AlOmeir and Khalid AlHaider, more original Arabic heroes we could play with like Frees, and most importantly, more support on a region-wide scale for artists in any sector. To put it in the words of Omar AlOmeir: “THE LOCAL INDUSTRY (IF YOU CAN CALL IT THAT) IS STILL IN ITS EARLY STAGES. VERY FEW PEOPLE ARE MAKING MONEY FROM MAKING GAMES, IF ANY. HOWEVER, THE FUTURE IS LOOKING PROMISING AND THE POOL OF TALENT IN THE REGION IS LOOKING EXCELLENT. I LOOK FORWARD TO COLLABORATING WITH MANY OF THE TALENTED PEOPLE IN THE MARKET TODAY.” In a huge video game market like Saudi Arabia, we’re in desperate need of video games made by Saudis, for Saudis; Arabic art made for Arabs. Here’s to more wonderful initiatives like Khawariz Games and The Amazing Adventures of Frees, and the continuation of a movement that’ll give us a happier more colorful future.

ONLINE SHOPPING DITCH THE AMAZON FOR THE DESERT By Hibatallah El Shafie
What’s better than shopping? ONLINE shopping! Convenience, better deals and access to many hard to get brands- what’s not to love about online shopping? Well, if you live in Riyadh here is why: late deliveries, high shipping costs and unfavorable exchange rates can make the most addicted of us get discouraged from buying online. So I have done a bit of digging and rounded a selection of the best online stores based in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf that cater a wide selection of products including many well known international brands offered at much better rates, free or little shipping costs and fast delivery!

1. NAMSHI
You might recognize their name from their witty television advertisements or their ubiquitous online ads. Dubai based Namshi was funded by Rocket Internet, a Berlin based firm owned by the Samwer brothers, who adopted a military-style way of building highly successful Internet companies and selling them off to the likes of eBay and Groupon.

2. SOUQ.COM
Another e-commerce giant in the region, Souq.com is one of the oldest entrants to the market (that survived) and is mostly popular for their consumer electronics products. Souq.com has a really rich investor. It’s owned by Al Jabbar Internet Group known for Maktoob.com which they sold to Yahoo! for $165 million. Souq.com offers free delivery upon online payments and the option to pay cash on delivery. Their constantly changing policies and slightly unreliable shipment deadlines can become slightly irksome though.

LAKE KHARRARAH PARK
HANIFA WATERFALL
&
A lake and a waterfall in Saudi Arabia? Yes! Believe it or not such gems do exist and of all places, in the middle of the desert. The magnificent red sand dunes outside Riyadh’s city limits hide this surprising secret little known to the expat community.
Amidst the endless ocean of sand dunes lies “Lake Kharrarah” National Park. The valley actually transforms into an actual lake only after the heavy rains. The massive surge of water rushes down the steep dunes into the valley below forming a lake which at times can be deep enough to swim in. When there’s no water the lake bed becomes an unexpected contrast to the surrounding red sand dunes. The valley becomes a pleasantly green pasture where migratory birds and other wildlife can be spotted, especially in early spring when the lake bed is in full bloom. Kharrarah Park is popular among locals for picnics, dune bashing, sand boarding and dune buggy riding. On weekdays the park is practically empty of visitors while on weekends larger crowds gather in the

afternoons, especially in the cooler months. Most people come to the area with SUV’s and other vehicles compatible for the desert. However, normal cars are able to reach the edges of the park because it’s paved almost all the way down to the lake bed. The best places will only be accessible with a 4x4 though. The lake bed makes for a picturesque picnic spot. Acacia trees surround the edges and the deeper end has more lush vegetation year round. The waterfalls can be found after a short drive along side of the lake. Water gushing down from the arid sand dunes is truly a sight to behold for those lucky enough to witness it. The red sand dune area is huge; It seems to continue endlessly to the horizon billowing
among the more experienced drivers. The tires should be deflated before entering the soft sand and a sand shovel and ladder are essential in getting the stuck cars out of the sand. Luckily, there are always friendly locals around ready to lend a helping hand! like a mass of waves. The scenery becomes even more astonishing in the afternoons and on cloudy days when the shadows begin to color the dunes in a multitude of colors. It’s worth exploring this area further beyond the fenced lake bed valley. There’s a paved road that goes behind the dunes around to the other end of the lake. There are numerous off road spots that can be explored with a 4x4 from here. Climbing the dunes by foot is certainly a strenuous effort, but well worth the struggle. Going up is a great exercise too! The views from the top of the highest dunes are spectacular. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Tuwaiq escarpment and the farms far out in the valley. Coming down the dunes is the most exciting part! Some people run, roll, jump, or slide down the soft sand on various items. Special sand boards can be used the same way as snow boards would to ski down the hills.Taking a car out to the dunes needs an experienced driver; getting stuck is a common occurrence even
To get to the Khararrah park from Riyadh take the Makkah highway west (route 40) proceed passing the check point and follow the road down the escarpment. Continue on this road passing the exit to Dirab and Dhurma until you reach exit 7 Jau, take the exit and make a U-turn. You are now headed back towards Riyadh. Take the first service road on the right, then you’ll pass by a pink gas station called ZamZam gas station. After the sign in English and Arabic for Kharrarah Park, turn right onto a road in rather poor condition. This road becomes a tarmac road after a few hundred meters and then passes by some camel farms as it circles its way into the dune area. As the road winds up and takes a sharp turn to the right about 4 kilometers from the main road, you’ll see a small white mosque on the right side of the road. The entrance to the lake valley is directly opposite from the mosque. GPS co ordinates for Lake Kharrarah: 24° 24’ 20.63” N 46° 14’ 43.45” E

BREATHTAKING
ASH SHAFA VILLAGE By Mohammed Mirza
The mercury is steadily rising as summer is around the corner, so to escape the heat we decided to head towards one of the coldest places in Saudi Arabia, Ash Shafa Village. Situated high in the Sarawat Mountain Range over 2,200 meters above sea level, it is home to many of Taif’s agricultural products and boasts of breathtaking scenery. What makes a trip to Ash Shafa ideal is its proximity to Jeddah, located at just over 200 kilometers from Jeddah. To reach the village we decided to take the shortest and safest route which is through Taif. Once at Taif we were on Ash Shafa Road, which leads straight to the beautiful village of Ash Shafa. Driving on the long Ash Shafa Road is an incredible experience as it runs across precipitous ascents and descents while also providing a great view of the surrounding landscape. We saw herds of monkeys along the way just sitting by the roadside for their free meals. As many tourists who go past the herds stop for a while, they offer the monkeys food ranging from chips to juices. I have a cousin who resides in Taif and is pretty familiar with Ash Shafa, so he came along with us and helped us a lot in terms of exploring the place. First he took us to the highest point near Ash Shafa Village. Apparently when it is foggy, you can’t even see the person next to you. Luckily when we 36 DESTINATION RIYADH
went there it was neither misty nor foggy, so we managed to get a great view of the stunning valleys, spectacular mountains and the scenic village of Ash Shafa. Then from the highest point, we headed back towards Ash Shafa and had tea at one of the local kiosks. Hot tea in cold weather along with a great view of the mountain range felt like it was the best tea experience we ever had. Later on in the day we went hiking across a flatter portion of the mountains. Hiking boots are a must, but unfortunately for us we were in our casual shoes and therefore had a difficult time hiking. Nevertheless it was still a fascinating experience as we enjoyed the constant gentle zephyr and it was the first time we went hiking.
While coming back from Ash Shafa we went for a horse ride. It was astonishingly thrilling as the whole path the horse took was around steep hilly portions of the mountains. It was specifically thrilling while coming downhill as I felt I might topple over the cliff. There are many farms close to Ash Shafa growing grapes, pomegranates and loads of other varieties of fruits. Some of the farmers are nice enough to allow you to visit their farms. Unfortunately, we were running late so we did not have time to visit them. Currently, there aren't many options in terms of decent accommodation at Ash Shafa and in order to get a decent hotel one has to head to Taif which is around 30 kilometers from Ash Shafa. Do not forget to check out the stalls selling fresh fruits on your way back to Jeddah, as they sell some of the best homegrown fruits at inexpensive prices compared to the city. Overall the trip was fantastic. We enjoyed the pleasant weather, the numerous picturesque valleys, the cool breeze, our first mountain hiking experience and the thrilling horse ride. It is ideal to visit in the summer season not only because of the great weather, but also because during other seasons it may be extremely foggy and therefore only suitable for experienced drivers to commute in such circumstances. In conclusion, if anyone is planning a visit to Taif, then a visit to Ash Shafa should definitely be on his/her itinerary.

ALAAN ARTSPACE...
not just a gallery By Talah Al Tamimi
I recently had the opportunity to sit down with one of the founders of Alaan Artspace, Mohammed Alsudairy. I wanted to hear more about the gallery that has Riyadh buzzing. 40 DESTINATION RIYADH
When I first walked into the space, for a minute I forgot I was in Riyadh. I sat down in the Majlis and ordered a cappucino. While waiting for my drink, the Gallery Manager, Mr. Cao, walked me through the current exhibition showcasing the Italian artist and photographer Teresa Emanuele. I felt enlightened. Upon Mohammed’s arrival, he explained to me that the concept of Alaan was his sister’s vision. Naema Alsudairy, an experimental photographer, felt that Riyadh lacked support for the Arts, and so she took on the challenge to create her dream project. Feeling my excitement, Mohammed continued. “IT IS ONE THING WE HEAR A LOT. AS SOON AS YOU STEP IN YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE IN NEW YORK. SOMEHOW, IT FEELS LIKE YOU ARE STEPPING INTO A DIFFERENT ENERGY.”
Alaan’s main purpose is to inspire visitors and act as a platform for artists to express themselves. Alaan is a restaurant, a gallery and a Majlis. “We have some books that visitors can browse through, a reference library for students in the Art and Design field, and we hold talks and offer workshops depending on the exhibition.” Alaan is a commercial art gallery that functions like a mini museum. “We have a mission of a museum; we want to educate. But at the same time we also sell art.” The restaurant is also a good way to generate traffic. Mohammed explains that nobody will necessarily drive through Riyadh traffic simply to visit an art gallery; however, Riyadis would drive to a restaurant and walk through the gallery before their meal. Alaan’s mission is to find Saudi artists, nurture them and exhibit their work in the gallery, as well as introduce various international artists to Riyadh residents. Currently, Alaan represents three Saudi artists, and they are always on the lookout for more. Mohammed indicates that the gallery sometimes has trouble finding local artists to represent. While most have the
technical aspect, “They don’t have the research and the thinking behind their artwork. It is very premature. We try to set up appointments and have our head curator guide them, but it hasn’t been easy as artists don’t take criticism well.” If the gallery finds an artist and believes in his/her work, they will assist/support the artist in any way they can. Mohammed suggests that aspiring Saudi artists need to do more research on their work. They should explore until they find what they think represents them and develop it. Artists “need to have their own technique, their own voice, then develop it further.” There needs to be depth and meaning behind the artist’s work not just technique. With regard to the Saudi art scene, it seems to be developing and growing. Mohammed adds, “WHAT IS EXCITING IS THAT IT IS VERY ORGANIC. IT IS GROWING FROM THE PEOPLE OF SAUDI, NOT SOMETHING COMING FROM OUTSIDE.” On that optimistic
note, I thanked Mohammed for a wonderful conversation and a great cappucino, and I left the space feeling more energized and content. Location: 280 Ourouba Road Tel: +966 -11-4169550 Email: contact@alaanart.com Web: www.alaanart.com

years of Arab creativity By Talah Al Tamimi
On April 28, 2013 Naila Art Gallery held the opening of the traveling exhibition '25 Years of Arab Creativity.' The event was held under the patronage of HE Dr. Abdulaziz Bin Moheiddin Khoja, Saudi Minister of Culture and Information, and HE Mr. Jack Lang, President of the Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, France. The exhibition showcased major contemporary artworks by Arab artists and gave an informative perspective on the visual arts development within the Arab world. These contemporary Arab artists experience life as it is today and express it with the various media of their time. Saudi Fransi Bank, Routub, and Bank Al Jazira, as well as MediaQuest’s Marie Claire Arabia and Haya sponsored the exhibition. The exhibition represented a landmark for the Institut du Monde Arabe and a collaboration between Saudi Arabia and France that promotes cultural exchange. The exhibition started on April 29 and ends on June 7, 2013. Tel: +966-11-880 53 52 Web: www.gallerynaila.com

STATE OF ART
Like most things, it all started with a simple idea. For these 28 driven Saudi girls, it was a concept they built on to pass a class. Then it became more, the idea grew and then there was no stopping the birth of www.statof-art.com, the first online gallery in the Kingdom and eventually, the Gulf. At the core of State of Art are female students from Al Yamama University who wanted to create an online platform for GCC artists to connect, showcase their art and give a chance to bridge the gap between consumers and their work. On May 11, 2013, the website was officially launched through a two-day VIP event at Harvey Nichols. The exhibit brought together talented Saudi artists with a diverse set of artistic inclinations and mediums. The young ladies collaborated with Harvey Nichols as well as a handful of sponsors. “We were very hands-on from conception and design up to execution,” said cofounder Alanoud Al Motlaq, also one of the featured artists. It was indeed inspiring to be one of the attendees. The team was available to answer all queries and guests really got a feel of how passionate and proud the team was of their project. A successful auction was held with a portion of the proceedings going to charity. These were through the artwork from cancerstricken children in Shemaisy Hospital.
The event and State of Art itself has received great support from the art community and highly regarded patrons. HRH Prince Bader Abdulmohsen Al Saud, a famous artist and poet, even contributed a dedication piece for the team. Christa Allen, an actress playing the role of Charlotte in the popular television series, Revenge, was also in attendance. Lama Abuljadayel, one of the founders and movers of the group, spoke to me about their drive to keep going and the future of the website: “We realized that a more accessible place for Arab artists was missing. Yes, we did want to just get the grade at the beginning but soon realized that this is something good! We can really empower people this way. So nine out of the 28 of us decided that this should be sustainable. We’re committed to further building the State of Art beyond getting our marks.” Twitter: @stateof_art Instragram: @stateof_art Youtube: stateofartchannel Web: www.stateof-art.com

Their customer service staff consists of members who are experts in Giordano products, and they are always willing and happy to assist customers in regards to making outfit choices or purchases. Their success is based on five core values: Quality, Knowledge, Innovation, Service and Simplicity (Q.K.I.S.S.). 10TIPS TRAVELING HIJABI
1. MAKE A CHECKLIST. This is essential for all travelers, whether you’re a hijabi or not. Write down everything you’ll be needing, from clothes to chargers and everything else in between. For maximum efficiency, cross off each item as it goes into the bag. The plus to this? Your newly made checklist will double as a log for packing on the way back. 2. TRY ON ALL YOUR OUTFITS BEFORE PACKING THEM. This way you can determine exactly what you’ll be needing to take with you and save on luggage space. If that pink hijab you thought you needed isn’t really going with any shirts, put it back! Also check for any tears on hijab clothes, chances are you take them out once a year and might’ve missed something. Helpful tip: take a photo of yourself with your mobile wearing the whole outfit. 3. MIND THE LAYERS. Layering is a hijabi girl’s blessing- and curse. All is la di da in winter, but come summer and that undershirt/shirtdress/leather jacket combo you thought was so cute is going to suffocate you. The lighter you go, the happier you’ll be (and the less your luggage fines are going to get). Careful you don’t go too light, though, and end up unknowingly walking around with a sheer shirt you thought was solid in the dim light. (find your best look and build on it). 50 DESTINATION RIYADH
4. LIMIT YOUR SHOES. I know, I know. You really need the cork wedges and the sparkly heels and those super cute teal flats and the Rene Caovilla crystal sandals- positively need them! However, you’ll be needing every little space you get and chances are you won’t be wearing the 15 pairs of shoes you lugged with you anyway. Choose two pairs: your most comfortable shoes to wear to the airport (yay more space!), and one pair of classy flats (or sandals for a beach destination) for the days that need a fancier option of footwear. Or, if you need heels, get those instead. Think of all the shoes you can buy now that your suitcase isn’t bulging!
and a new outfit is born. Get a long enough cardigan and wear it alone for a comfortable airport outfit (with that men’s undershirt you just bought. I know. Ingenious.) 7. PUT YOUR HEADSCARVES IN A SMALLER SEPARATE BAG, should you be going on a road trip or a long summer holiday. This will keep them neatly folded and easily accessible. If you’re sharing hijabs with your mother or sister, it will help you keep track of what colors you have. 8. WEAR THOSE CARDIGANS with a pair of jeans for a casual outfit and hit the high brand shops feeling pretty in a light shade. You can even make use of cardigans on the occasional formal night about town. Dress it up with formal pants (white’s a great color) and a button up shirt for an elegant look (and an entry to that 3 Michelin star restaurant).
5. BUY AN INEXPENSIVE PACK OF MEN’S UNDERSHIRTS. Yes. You read that right the first time. The problem with hijab shirts is, generally they aren’t designed for a hijabi in mind, shirtdress and the like. Most are either sheer, or the necklines are a bit low and there’s nothing in the market designated 9. REMEMBER WHAT THE WHOLE POINT to be the perfect undershirt. Tank tops have OF HIJAB IS. Turban hijabs have been in annoying low torso lines, and high-necked lately, and while it is quite lovely people tend ladies vests have too short of a hemline to be to forgo their necks and cleavage for fashion any use. These however, have a high enough choices. Hijab is about modesty, so keep that neckline and low enough hems to be very in mind and simply throw on a scarf or wear versatile in situations you’ve run out of fresh a high neck sweater if you plan on turbaning undershirts, and they’re easy to pack and it out. cheap to boot. Want to offload something on the way back? Leave this in the hotel with a 10. ABOVE ALL, BE PROUD. It may get hot, clear conscience. the packing is a nightmare and the tan lines aren’t all that ideal, but it's a great feeling 6. MAKE CARDIGANS YOUR NEW BEST you get knowing you chose to live a modest FRIEND. Yes, I did warn about layering. life. Most importantly, don’t limit yourself! But cardigans are magical things when used Hijabs won’t stop you from having fun. correctly. Get one or two in lightweight cotton and solid colors (I find grey, beige, and black to be the most used, in that order), and one in a color you find yourself wearing a lot (ie. pink, blue, or my favorite, purple). Pair them with a maxi dress for arm coverage and voila! A great summer look! Want to change that tired dress shirt up? Throw it and your favorite necklace

Dining Around Town
ALL ABOUT SHAWARMA Here’s a bit about Riyadh Indoctrination: You’re not a full-fledge capital dweller if you haven’t chewed your way through a savory local favorite: The Shawarma. The classic Shawarma we have come to love has the simple works: juicy and flavorful chicken, fries, complimented with a pickle or two wrapped in soft Arabic bread. Of course, how can we leave out the sauce? Traditionally it is garlic infused mayonnaise that brings the whole ensemble together and gives you that mouthful of goodness. Shawarma houses are easy enough to find. They’re all around the city. If the classic shawarma just doesn’t tickle your taste buds 56 DESTINATION RIYADH
enough, there are shops offering a twist to this traditional sandwich from beef and lamb options, coleslaws and sauce variations, there’s something for everyone.
Destination Riyadh decided to go on a food field trip to give you a list of must try shawarmas in the city. After eating our way through recommendations and our own run around town, we satisfyingly bring you the mouthwatering results.
BAYT SHAWARMA (SHAWARMA HOUSE) Prince Abdulaziz Ibn Abdo Street, Suleimaniyah Milder seasoning, chicken that’s grilled right on the outside but still juicy on the inside and bound by a thin chewy bread. When a restaurant earns its badge as a local go-to spot, you can always expect a huge crowd. Bayt Shawarma is no exception. What makes them worth the wait? I was a bit apprehensive with the Jumbo Shawarma but had to try it because everyone said it’s the bestseller, and I’d be missing out on the good part if I didn’t ask for the special hot sauce. This simply delivered a hot savory punch to my taste buds. You’d think that with that combination, it would be hard to finish the whole thing but no, the special sauce mixes well with the garlic sauce and ketchup that I ended up devouring the whole thing. TIPS: Subdue the heat with a smoothie. It’s a perfect match. The place is swarmed with patrons around lunch time and instead of doing takeaways it is best to enjoy your shawarma at the restaurant itself -- eating it warm does make a difference.
MAMA NOURA Dabab St, Suleimaniyah District Extremely popular among Riyadhis is the Mama Noura Juice Center; you can’t possibly miss their first (and very crowded) branch in Dabab Street. Once you see the traffic build up right after King Fahd Medical City, look up to your right and you'll see the well-lit building that’s causing all this crowd. Does it live up to its rep? There’s a pretty good reason behind Mama Noura’s loyal followers, the Shawarma is the star of their menu (we’ve noticed people not even looking at one, they just instantly yell out their orders). No frills here, just properly seasoned white meat, french fries, and pickles wrapped in 5-inch pita. What makes it such a hit is that smear of garlic sauce that tastes so good, no wonder customers are ordering an extra wallop of it. While you can request for add-ons and order variations, we recommend sticking to the regular. TIPS: Pair it with a smoothie. Best drop by from 3-6 p.m., the volume of people tends to increase around the evening due to the many joggers who end their exercise with a “calorie rewarding” final stop here. I’ve encountered two burnt and barely sauced shawarmas in the past decade of eating at Mama Noura but so far, they’ve faired well with consistency.
DESTINATION RIYADH 57
McCOY’s Malaz Street This is a city gem that’s not so neatly tucked away in the old district of Malaz. It’s been around for decades and interestingly enough, despite its local fame, it has not branched out anywhere else in the Kingdom. This is the sort of place you’d go to if you’re looking for some authentic fast-food Riyadh style. Why is it Riyadh’s best kept secret? People will drive all the way to Malaz (which is usually a traffic ridden and long route for most) just to eat at McCoys. It’s probably the spices in the chicken or that unique garlic sauce, or maybe it’s just the tasty, textured, crisp bread. Whatever it is, it lets McCoy get away with customers double parking and waiting for as long as 30 minutes for their order. This is the shawarma that locals grew up knowing and craving. TIPS: The store is open until 1 a.m. and people keep on coming until it closes. It was hard to order for women, you literally have to endure lines so it’s best to appoint one person (male preferably) to order and collect. Oh and since this is just one of the places you really don’t get the luxury of visiting often (unless you’re from the area), I suggest grabbing an order of broasted chicken with your shawarma.
YA MAL ALSHAM Olaya Street A contemporary of the prior restaurants but more updated in how it serves its yummy delights. The Shawarma in Y’Amal Al Sham ranges from chicken or beef to the Discovery Shawarma. They have spacious branches throughout the city, so it’s much more convenient to access. What makes it different? One of the elements that people love about this place is that they toast the pita bread, adding a crunchy feel to it. The Discovery Shawarma is well, a discovery indeed, tasty and different but somewhat still familiar to 58 DESTINATION RIYADH
your palette. You can opt to order online since they do have a very customer friendly site. TIPS: They have different types of bread to choose from, but we recommend the pita. You can ask them to add other ingredients such as onions, some slaw and tomatoes.
ASSARAYA TURKISH REST. Thalateen Street., Olaya You can have your shawarma here anyway you like- open platter, jumbo or regular. The best thing is that it’s the family-friendliest shawarma shop we’ve visited on the list. The family section makes for a good ambience to have dinner and just enjoy tasty food. What’s to Love? A lot of other places offer the same variety as Assaraya, but what puts it a cut above the rest is the consistency in flavor. You can’t go wrong whether you order the “rocket” (apparently a locally coined term used by patrons who have the appetite for their jumbo size shawarma) or would rather give the open plate one a go. We recommend the platter, chicken, pickles, french fries and garlic sauce neatly laid out with some pita bread on the side. TIPS: When enjoying the platter, try matching it with the complimentary Turkish bread they serve and get a side order of their buttered hummus. Expect to get your hands dirty for an absolutely satisfying dining experience.

The bravest and most loyal men lived over 1400 years ago. These men not only had the purest hearts and intentions but were also lucky enough to be the closest companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Among them were the first three caliphs of Islam: Abu Bakir – The Truthful, the first revert to Islam and Prophet (PBUH)’s dearest companion and Omar Al-Khattab – The Great and Uthman Ibn Affan - The Giver. Read on for a brief history of these three strong characters who contributed to Islam in a magnitude ways.
Three Historic Advocates of Islam: Abu Bakir Al-Seddiq
Abdullah Ibn Abi Quhafa, known as Abu Bakir Al-Seddiq, was born in Makkah and he was the first man to convert to Islam. He was called “Al-Siddiq” which translates to “The Truthful” because he had a sincere heart and never doubted the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) when he first spoke to people about Islam. Abu Bakir’s faith was too strong to be shaken by anything or anyone. Abu Bakir supported the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) with every decision he took without ever questioning or doubting him. Of all the companions that the Prophet had, Abu Bakir supported him during critical moments of his life. One of the major incidents was when the Prophet migrated to Madinah and Abu Bakir was selected to accompany him. In addition, Abu Bakir’s wealth was very useful for the early

Abu Bakir was passing by when he witnessed this scene; he immediately paid for Bilal’s release. Bilal went on to become the first muezzin for the Muslim community. After the Prophet Mohammed died (May God rest his soul in peace), Abu Bakir became the first Muslim caliph “Khalifat Al-Rasool” which translates to Rightful Successor of the Messenger of Allah. Abu Bakir was Caliph for only two years because he soon fell ill and did not recover due to his old age.
Omar Ibn Al-Khattab
Uthman Ibn Affan
Omar was 27 years old when he converted to Islam. At first he was against Islam and was in great shock to know that his sister and his brother-in-law had converted to Islam. However after his sister gave him a chapter of the Quran “Surat Ta-Ha” to read, he was amazed by the verses so he converted to Islam. He then went to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and announced his conversion to him and his companions.
Uthman was one of the earliest people to convert to Islam and the fourth man to follow the Prophet Mohammed on his mission. His conversion upset a lot of his clan, and his wife ended up divorcing him because of that. The only two people who supported him were his aunt Saadi and his stepsister Um Kulthum, who also converted to Islam. After Uthman’s divorce, the Prophet Mohammed asked him to marry his daughter Ruqayyah, which was a great honor for him.
Omar Ibn Al-Khattab also known as AlFarooq “The Great” was born in Makkah. He was one of the powerful and most dominant Muslims that had ruled in Islam. He was best known for his justice, which earned him the title “Al-Farooq.” Omar came from a middle class family and he became a merchant.
After Abu Bakir had passed away, Omar accepted the position of being the Muslim’s new Caliph. Omar concentrated more on combining his power and political influence in the conquered land, rather than pursuing conquests. Omar Ibn Al-Khattab was stabbed to death in Madinah and was carried to his house. People were devastated by his death because he was one of the fairest rulers of Islam, and he died defending the Islamic religion.
Uthman Ibn Affan was born in Taif; he came from a wealthy family, Banu Umayya of the Quraysh tribe. He was also know as “Uthman Ghani” which means “Uthman the Giver” because after he converted to Islam he gave a lot of his inheritance to charity.
Uthman and his wife Ruqayyah were two of the people who migrated to Abyssinia then later on to Madinah. His wife suffered from malaria and then caught smallpox which made him stay with her in Madinah and consequently not allowing him to join those who left with the Prophet Mohammed. Ruqayya died during the “Badr War.” Before the death of Caliph Omar, he asked that the third Caliph should be assigned and the majority favored Uthamn.

COLOMBO A POTPOURRI OF EXPERIENCES By Mohammed Mirza
The cobalt blue of the sea in the photo on my laptop matched exactly the one below us as our flight edged over the vast Indian Ocean. We flew past a meandering coastline stretching like a long white ribbon known as Adam’s Bridge towards the tropical paradise of Sri Lanka.
62 DESTINATION RIYADH
WE ARE HERE...
AFTER BOBBING IN AND OUT OF LARGE PUFFS OF CLOUDS, WE FINALLY TOUCHED DOWN AT BANDARANAIKE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
As we were waiting in a long immigration queue, we watched some of the most beautiful sights of Sri Lanka on the large LED display screens which made us even more eager to rush out of the airport and start exploring. After finally getting done with our immigration, we drove towards the energetic city of Colombo.
COLOMBO
THE COMMERCIAL CAPITAL OF SRI LANKA
Colombo is very popular with tourists. The newer parts of Colombo are typical to other metropolitan cities adorned with modern skyscrapers, while the older parts of the city still maintain the city’s rich identity. It is a nice blend of the two extremes surviving simultaneously in the bustling metropolis.
TUK TUK!
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC RIDE
After getting refreshed, we hired a tuk tuk to show us around the city. First up he took us towards the famed beaches of Colombo. They consisted of white sand, cobalt blue Arabian sea, warm water and beautiful palm trees. Hoards of exotic fruits and fish were being sold by vendors while kids were flying kites and families came together for picnics. The beach was pretty crowded, which made it even livelier.
GALLE ROAD...
SHOPPING AT GALLE ROAD
This road has some of the finest malls selling premium brands from around the world. The best dining options are also available on this road, and it is almost like an eatery is incomplete if they don’t serve seafood.
THE NATIONAL MUSEUM!
A MASSIVE COLONIAL LIKE BUILDING
What I found most interesting at the museum was an absolutely astonishing skeleton of a blue whale hanging on the ceiling in the
main hall. A few meters away from the museum is a Parthenon like monument known as the Independence Memorial Hall. Intricately designed lion statues surround the monument and are supposed to give the impression that they are guarding the monument from all sides. Inside the hall there are 25 sculptures each telling a story of Sri Lanka’s customs, traditions and history. It’s architecture is unique as it incorporates both Sri Lankan and Indian architectural styles.
THE FERRY!
LATER ON AT NIGHT WE WENT FOR A RIDE ON THE FERRY
It was absolutely fantastic. On one side we had the sparkling skyline of Colombo and the vast seemingly endless sea on the other. Guests even had an appealing dining option on the ferry which was equally pleasing.
KOTTU PARATHA, STRING HOPPERS, KIRIBATH, MALABARI PARATHA...
WE GORGED ON THE LOCAL FOOD
During our stay we indulged on local cuisine among which include kottu paratha, string hoppers, kiribath, malabari paratha and of course we slurped the authentic Ceylon tea whenever we got a chance. My personal favorite among all this was the malabari paratha, which is a layered flat bread with vegetable stuffing rolled up in a triangular shape. When we found spare time during our entire stay in Colombo, we would either head towards Galle Road, hit the beach or we would hire a tuk tuk and just roam around the city.
OVERALL
THE COLOMBO EXPERIENCE WAS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC
Amidst the commercial city we found bits and pieces of tropical bliss. Every moment was splendid, be it the exotic tropical fruits we ate throughout the journey, the smell of the aromatic Ceylon tea, the swim in the white sand beaches or the visits to the historical landmarks- truly unforgettable. The RIGHT STRATEGY
to Gaining Lean Muscles Minus Overtraining By Dr. Badr Alshibani
Have you been training hard and eating healthy, but still can’t seem to get the muscles and the perfect shape you desire? Don’t get frustrated! I was facing the same trouble when I first got into bodybuilding, but after understanding the basic principles of working out and learning the fundamentals of body types and muscle stimulus, I started to grow real muscles and never looked back. Follow the tips below and you too will discover the secrets to building strong and lean muscles without the risk of overtraining.
TIP # 1: LEARN THE BASIC WORKOUT PRINCIPLES BY HEART Whether you are training to gain muscles or to lose weight, it is crucial that you first go through the basics. Always keep in mind that resistance training is a gradual and progressive process. Firstly, spend about five minutes doing a warm-up exercise before jumping into your training routine. These preliminary warm-ups will get your blood flowing and raise your metabolic rate. In addition, do light stretching right after your warm-up exercise. Secondly, following your training routine, you have to spend at least five minutes doing low-intensity aerobic exercise to cool down and to keep your heart rate under 100 beats per minute. Also, you have to thoroughly stretch after your workout to increase your muscles’ flexibility and to avoid them from getting tight or tensed. 64 DESTINATION RIYADH
Lastly, replenish your body with fast-acting carbohydrates like bananas or whey protein to help you build strong and lean muscles. Do this directly after your training or within 30 minutes of training. Also, get some rest and make sure to sleep at least eight hours a night. If you are training three times per week, rest a day between sessions. Keep in mind that the real growth and development of muscles occurs during rest and proper nutrition, not during the workout routine itself.
TIP # 2: IDENTIFY YOUR BODY TYPE Similar to a car engine, each body needs a corresponding type of fuel for it to run and function effectively. For instance, a gasoline engine runs on gasoline and a diesel engine runs on diesel. Knowing your body type will help you understand your system’s metabolism as well as the training methods and diet plans you need to fuel your body’s cells and to help build real muscles.
BELOW ARE THREE MALE BODY TYPES. WHICH AMONG THESE IS YOURS? • Ectomorphs are “hard gainers.” They are typically thin and skinny with small shoulders, a flat chest and a fast metabolism. Ectomorphs burn calories and fat fast, making cutting back lean muscle easy. If you’re an Ecto type of guy, you need to consume more calories in order to gain muscles, and your workout must also be short and intense. • Mesomorphs are “easy gainers.” They are natural athletes that possess hard bodies, large bone structures, and welldefined muscles. If you’re a mesomorph type of guy, you gain muscles and lose weight easily and also respond better to weight training. Unlike Ectomorphs, you gain fat more effortlessly so you need to watch your calorie intake carefully. A combination of weight training and cardio works best for you. • Endomorphs are “weight gainers” but a large portion of this weight is fat and not muscle. They are typically short and sturdy with thick arms and legs. If you’re an endomorph, you need to do more cardio and weight trainings to burn fat. Most endomorphs have a high protein diet so supplements are not needed.
TIP # 3: WATCH YOUR PROGRESS AND LEVEL UP Intense muscle and weight training should never be a one-day venture and neither should it be the same every day. For
x bodybuilding training to be successful, you have to develop an operative exercise plan and “strength training” strategy that matches your body type and triggers the increase in bone, muscle strength and density. The training program should involve changes in the number of repetitions, tempo, force, and exercises.
you are “Whether training to gain
muscles or to lose weight, it is crucial that you first go through the basics.
”
Thus, the secret to gaining muscle mass is to lift more weight today than you did yesterday or two weeks ago. Remember every lift you perform triggers your brain and sends neurological messages to your muscles to get bigger. If you’re lifting the same weight today as you did yesterday and two weeks ago, then you’re sending the wrong message to your muscles. Building lean and stronger muscles does not happen in just one snap of a finger. Rather it is a continuous and consistent process of hard work, discipline, intense workouts and equal amounts of recuperation. Also, getting the best results is always a product of one’s mental and physical input. Hence you need to be consistent, consume a decent amount of calories and proteins, train based on your body type and get loads of rest. For sure you’ll be on your way to losing fats and building stronger and leaner muscle mass. DESTINATION RIYADH 65

SLEEPLESS
HOURS with
Dr. Abdulaziz Faruqui For quite some time now, people worldwide including Saudis have been known to stay up late and therefore get less than eight hours of sleep daily. With time, this unhealthy sleeping pattern became a lifestyle and unfortunately it has become the norm. In order to reveal the negative consequences caused by lack of sleep, Dr. Abdulaziz Faruqui risked his own wellbeing by conducing an experiment in which he stayed awake for 80 consecutive hours. Destination Jeddah had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Faruqui and hear all about his 80 sleepless hours. A high percentage of Saudis have adapted to a certain lifestyle that revolves around sleeping at a very late hour and waking up early, therefore getting their bodies accustomed to an unhealthy sleeping pattern. Unfortunately, the health risks and downsides caused by lack of sleep remain unknown to the general public; therefore, Dr. Faruqui decided to take action. We all read and hear stories about the consequences of unhealthy sleeping patterns. However, seeing documented medical facts based on first-hand experience has a greater effect on people and could 66 DESTINATION RIYADH
hopefully create more awareness. With that goal in mind, Dr. Faruqui began his 80 sleepless hours experiment. The first day of the experiment was typically just like any other day. When Dr. Faruqui reached the evening of day two, he realized he began to lose the ability to walk and talk properly, and was also finding it difficult to remember activities of his day. Dr. Faruqui began to feel exhausted by day three, noting that his blood pressure, heart rate and sugar level were increasing with every passing day. Towards the evening of day three Dr. Faruqui began hallucinating and by day four he cried from tiredness. Although Dr. Faruqui refrained from taking pills to stay awake, he consumed plenty of coffee and energy drinks such as Redbull. He also managed to stay awake with the help of his friends, specifically Saleem
Homsi, who organized their schedules so that Dr. Faruqui isn’t left alone. Dr. Obai Al Bashir, a friend and colleague, assisted Dr. Faruqui greatly by showing him an effective 20-minute workout that gave him energy. The International Medical Center (IMC) monitored Dr. Faruqui’s health throughout his experiment and documented the consequences of lack of sleep. Dr. Faruqui concludes that he conducted this educational experiment with an aim to create awareness regarding the consequences of unhealthy sleeping patterns. He is an inspiring young man on a mission to make a difference by proactively addressing issues within our society. We wish him the best of luck and look forward to his future endeavors. K.A.CARE
“From the Kingdom of Energy, to the Kingdom of Renewable Energy” By Talah Al Tamimi
Saudi Arabia is not only one of the largest oil producers and exporters, but it is now also working on becoming a leader in the alternative and renewable energy sphere by 2032. April 17, 2013 marked the third year of the formation of KA CARE, also know as King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy. The entity was developed to prepare the country for a more sustainable future. The Government predicts that Saudi Arabia’s demand for electricity will surpass 120 gigawatts by 2032. This increase in demand is coming from a rapidly growing population, causing more domestically produced oil to be used for electricity generation. According to KA CARE’s website, “The overall demand for fossil fuels for power, industry, transportation, and desalination is estimated to grow from 3.4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2010 to 8.3 million barrels of oil per day in 2028.” These figures are outstanding, especially considering that electricity from oil in Saudi Arabia consumes approximately 26 percent of domestic production. Since oil for local consumption is purchased at a subsidy, this 70 DESTINATION RIYADH
would represent a huge loss in potential oil export revenue for the Kingdom. To circumvent this problem, the target is to have 50 percent of local energy demand being met by other forms of energy by 2032. These forms include solar, nuclear, wind, waste-to-energy, and geothermal power. If this plan works, the solar industry is predicted to generate one-third of the country’s electricity by 2032, and Saudi Arabia will be among the top five players in solar power globally. KA CARE, led by H.E. Dr. Hashim Yamani, is the entity responsible for implementing the country’s renewable energy program. The strategy is to build a sustainability city 25 kilometers southwest of Riyadh. The city will house KA CARE’s headquarters and will act as a catalyst for the renewable energy sector in the Kingdom. Other facilities include a research and development division and a business division with companies in the
renewable energy industry. The research, development and innovation division will be the basis of KA CARE's future innovations. It has a goal of becoming a national technology leader in renewable and nuclear energy and a global leader in the development of renewable and nuclear energy technologies. KA CARE’s other responsibilities include picking the best partners through a competitive procurement process and hosting events to create awareness. KA CARE hosted the Saudi Sustainable Energy Symposium that took place from April 23 – 24, 2013 at the Ritz Carlton. Web: www.kacare.gov.sa/en
Solar power projects in KSA:
Visit Mishkat:
1. In October 2011, the first solar power plant was commissioned on Farasan Island, 40 kilometers from Jizan. The station contains 6,000 solar cells and is expected to generate 864,000 kilowatt per year. The power station has been connected to Jizan’s power grid, transferring the equivalent of 28,000 barrels of diesel fuel to Farasan Island.
If you are part of a school or university do not miss out on Mishkat. Round up the kids and visit this interactive science discovery center that engages the public about the importance of energy in daily life. Mishkat is a KA CARE initiative to inspire youth, and it is currently only open for student groups. It holds exhibitions, events, and workshops to inspire students to become the energy innovators of tomorrow. The center showcases, engages, and provides knowledge on innovations in the atomic and renewable energy fields. Its mission is to spread science and knowledge in an interactive and entertaining way.
2. Solar power is also coming to Riyadh rooftops. King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) is installing two solar rooftop plants that will be connected to the city’s power grid, reducing the city’s dependence on oil. KAFD towers A and C will house a 200 kilowatt installation of solar panels with a total annual output of 330 megawatt.
