THOUGHTS TO P O N D E R
Saying Prayers and Sending Aid to Syria Eid is just around the corner, and after a month of fasting we have earned the right to celebrate with our family and friends in every way we can. However, we must not forget about our fellow Muslim brothers in Syria. We must keep them in our thoughts during this holiday and try to spread the joyful Eid spirit by donating necessities such as clothing, food, and medicine to them. Keeping the children
in mind, we can contribute NEW clothes and toys as our Eid gifts to them. And of course, as always, our prayers for them should never cease – prayers for peace have no expiration date. TO DONATE: - NCB account No. SA231 00 000 201 88 888 000 100 - STC new line number (5565)

The End of the ‘Sponsorship’ System
The Saudi Labor Ministry has removed the “sponsorship” system, which was unfair to foreigners. A Human Rights report showed it was full of abuses. Business owners were detaining the foreigners’ freedom of mobility by keeping their passports. Now, the system will be different, there will not be a transfer of sponsorship, but a transfer of services. The aim is to protect the rights of both foreign workers and employees. It doesn’t mean that migrants can enter Saudi Arabia in order to look for a job, only that they have freedom of mobility once they are legally employed.

Targeting Underage Smokers Being part of society obligates us to do right by the people… no matter what our personal habits may be. At a local Internet café called Magha Net, a promotion for Marlboro Cigarettes took place where they were encouraging young guys to exchange their smokes with a new Marlboro pack with a cool lighter. The age range of the audience was no older than 18 years old, (selling cigarettes to kids under 18 is illegal in most countries.) Cigarettes should be sold to adults (18 and older) and identification should always be required when purchasing. Our kids’ health should be our first priority. 8

Happy EID
JEDDAH IN EID MODE By Yousra Elwi
CITY OVERVIEW
If this is the first time you are spending Eid AlFitr in Jeddah, you need a general orientation in order to be prepared. Throughout the three Eid days, you’ll notice that the city goes into a state of repose during daytime and comes to life at night. Until around 7 pm, street noises are vastly reduced, traffic is incredibly pleasant, and it feels like everyone is just enjoying and relaxing at home. Technically during these hours, everyone is more or less settled somewhere, either visiting or hosting visitors, dining at restaurants, relaxing at home, or enjoying the beach! However, as night looms, the city brings out an entirely different face; the streets fill up with multi- destination cars moving around the celebrating crowds from one point to another. Jeddah’s Corniche is a major hot spot during Eid nights, where people will either be cruising around with friends or having seaside ‘picnics’ with their families. Aside from enjoying the outdoor setting, families gather at Corniche to watch the fireworks that usually light up the skies during Eid nights - kids have a blast and parents appreciate the festive mood. Speaking of picnics, they’re becoming widely popular throughout the past year with all the new parks around town (thumbs up to that!). So a lot of families head to their favorite parks where they can enjoy a more peaceful outdoor experience. Other than that, people will either be at restaurants or at home gatherings, that is, if they haven’t escaped the city from the first day of Eid and gone to North Obhur for a nearby breather. 18 DESTINATION JEDDAH
EID VACATIONS
As the case in all Islamic cities, Eid Al-Fitr is an official holiday in Jeddah. Generally, this Eid is celebrated over three days, however the number of working off-days vary according to numerous aspects. For working people, it mainly depends on whether they are in the public or private sector and which field they’re working in, but the norm is to find most working people on vacation for the three days of Eid. As for academic institutions, this Eid luckily falls within the summer holidays on most academic calendars, so they are already on vacation. Usuallyacademic institutions are granted longer Eid vacations than business entities and generally the last week of Ramadan is off for schools and universities too and end up having a nice long, seasonal break.

GENERAL SERVICES
Services, particularly corporate ones, are quite limited during Eid. Banks, for instance, are closed for this period, hence you’ll find most people rushing to finish any bank transactions before the last day of Ramadan to avoid delays. As for consumer services, they’re mostly available from the second day of Eid, but some don’t keep us waiting and are open from the afternoon of the first day. So malls and stores, for example, are usually up and running starting the second day of Eid. The only exception is the food and beverage services. For restaurants, cafés and food outlets, Eid is a remarkably high season.
RESTAURANTS & CAFÉS
All popular dining spots are fully packed throughout Eid, so if you don’t reserve ahead of time, you’ll most probably get 20 DESTINATION JEDDAH
stuck with a few undesirable options. Lunch and dinner are the peak times, with dinner being slightly higher, yet some early birds enjoy the long-awaited morning breakfast after Ramadan. The venue selection depends on whether the outing is with friends or family; some places are generally more familyoriented while others mainly attract the younger crowd. Cafés will usually fill up with the younger ones, for the Shisha availability and the overall relaxed ambiance; families will head to fancier restaurants or if with kids, they’ll choose a place that will better accommodate them. Hotel restaurants top the popularity list during Eid for their open buffets and special children entertainment. Open-air Corniche restaurants and cafes are always fully booked during Eid, which contributes to
After prayer, families gather to celebrate with a morning breakfast feast after the month of fasting. Traditionally, this feast takes place at the big family house (be it the grandparents, uncle’s, etc.), where the old and the young in the family come together to spend the festive morning. However nowadays, some people go to restaurants for breakfast and save the family reunion till lunch or dinner.
the evening’s high traffic in that area. People usually go to these places in big groups, and spend their entire evening there. Considering that Eid Al-Fitr is in August this year, people may not be able to handle the heat and humidity, thus indoor options may be more viable. However, Jeddah’s residents may surprise you when it comes to weather tolerance, they simply adapt in order to maintain an entertaining lifestyle!
THE CONVENTIONAL CELEBRATION
Starting from the last week or two of Ramadan, people begin preparing for Eid. They go shopping for the must-have ‘Eid outfits,’ they buy the special Eid desserts, and make the necessary arrangements for Zakat Al-Fitr (charity). Then the actual rituals start from the early morning of the first day of Eid with the distinctive Eid Prayer, which is performed in congregation at the mosques. Spacious outdoor areas also accommodate the large number of Muslims coming to perform this celebratory prayer with their families. Special sermons are delivered after performing the prayer, usually addressing the cherished values in Islamic teachings. It is Sunnah (the custom of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH) that people go to Eid Prayer well-groomed, so you’ll see the men in brilliantly white thobes, the women in neat abayas, and the children cheerfully dressed up. Some families further engage their children in the gracious spirit of Eid by having them give out candies and chocolates to other children present at Eid Prayer. 22 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Eideyas, or Eid cash gifts, are normally given during these breakfasts - the children eagerly wait fot the older family members to give them their beloved Eideyas, which does not just feel like money. The Eideya is valued not only for its amount, but also for the precious meaning it holds. Visits start taking place from the afternoon of the first day of Eid and go on until the last day. Families, friends and neighbors go over to each other’s houses all dressed up and bring with them platters of Eid desserts. Some visits are brief greetings, while others are more of a prolonged fiesta. However in all cases, the ultimate purpose is to share the joy and celebrate together. The second and third Eid days are basically a continuation of the first day, with more visit rounds and family unions. Yet people start filling up the restaurants for lunch and dinner, and enjoying more of the city outings, while others head to the beach to spend the day or stay overnight.

What’s your Eid ritual? DJ Staff’s Eid Stories
Eid is a religious, yet merry holiday for Muslims. Each culture has its own unique rituals, but nonetheless you can’t ignore the festive and celebratory atmosphere, and even more importantly, the uncontainable happiness beaming from the faces of Jeddahwis. As Jeddah is full of different nationalities we all are unique, but when it comes to Eid, it shows how united Muslims really are. The atmosphere of Eid is really the same everywhere, no matter where you are from! Here at DJ some of our staff wanted to share their rituals and experiences of Eid. Please share your rituals and memorable Eid experiences via our Facebook or Twitter page. Rayan Khayat
FAMILY MOSQUE TRIP: Around 3am of the first day, my family and I all go to my grandmother’s house. All my aunts, uncles and cousins are there as well. We share stories, eat lots of candy, and take pictures. Afterwards we chaotically get ready to go and pray and put on our new thobes on. Then we go to the Masjid in a big congregation of around 5 cars. This is a special time because whilst praying and celebrating this religious festival, I get to see all my family. After prayer, we come back and have breakfast, and then it’s time to go home and finally get some sleep!
Angelic Salha
TREASURE HUNTING : One significant Eid ritual for me is when my cousin’s grandfather would make these small clay pots for his grandchildren every year. He would put in each pot different kinds of ‘Eidiyas’ (which would include money, silver coins or gold coins). After that he buries them in the garden and the grandchildren would have to look for them and dig them up. The fun part of the whole tradition was looking for the pots and being surprised by what was inside. Some would be lucky and get a 500 SR bill and some would get 50 SR. Some would get a gold coin and some silver.

EID BATH: During my childhood, the night before Eid we would all put on our brand new PJs. Then we would spend long hours in the shower pampering ourselves - I used to call this the ‘Eid bath.’ Treating ourselves would normally include coming up with new hair dos, hair coloring, manicures and pedicures. Why? Simply because it’s Eid! This was definitely the highlight of my Eid! After the prayer, we would head to our grandparents’ house where we meet up with the entire family and greet each other for the Eid and start taking pictures, then normally eat a traditional full Saudi breakfast. Then it’s ‘Edieyah’ time! This is when the older generations would normally give the younger generations money as a gift.
Bassem AlKasabi
NEIGHBORHOOD FUN: Back in Egypt, the Eid prayer was so beautiful. Being in the midst of the happy and celebratory atmosphere is amazing. You could hear the Takbeer in my local neighbourhood and I would watch and listen as all my neighbours and other familiar faces get together and make their way to the Masjid. We would then dress up in our new clothes and go to pray. After that we would have a family breakfast. I still remember all the neighbours opening their front doors in the early morning and exchanging dishes and great big smiles. It was a must, to go to the cinema during Eid as well, although it was extremely crowded. Nonetheless, it was tremendously fun.

INTIMITABLE EID BREAKFAST:
Eid morning we would go to certain relatives as we were always invited for breakfast there, then in the afternoon it would just consist of visiting families of both my parents. During the second day, my cousins would come over to my house and we’d play games. Usually my Eid follows a similar pattern each year because as a family, we are used to our traditions and culture. My family follows a very traditional ‘Saudi Eid’ for the first two days.
During my childhood I used to go to Madinah with my family during Eid time, those trips were truly wonderful and memorable experiences that I will never forget. The night before we would sleep late, all the girls would take a shower and wear our new PJ’s. Sometimes we used to do henna on each other. Then after that, we would go to and from our relative’s house. The most fun and precious time is spending quality time with my immediate family whilst we having our ‘Eid Breakfast.’
Halah Gandeel
THE HEAPS OF GUESTS: The best part of the Eid prayer for me is seeing all the kids dressed up in their best clothes, getting in the festive mood by running around, playing, laughing, and some even giving out treats. When Eid prayer is over we all go back home and get ready for the 40 something guests for Eid breakfast! That is my absolute favorite part as our home tends to look and smell like a beautiful hotel, especially when we use special plates used only for Eid. That is when I truly feel the wonderful spirit of the holiday.

COMPASSIONATE
GIVING IN
Eid
By Yousra Elwi
As part of our culture, most of us have come to perform Zakat Al-Fitr habitually and functionally, and perhaps we sometimes lose the spiritual engagement – the fundamentally intended purpose behind this deed. The first forms of Zaka (charity) we think of in the occasion of Eid Al-Fitr is money; we’ve become accustomed to giving out specific financial amounts for the receiver to use to his / her convenience. Now this is great, but wouldn’t it be much more meaningful if we engage our minds on a deeper level and feel the real virtue of this deed? Giving with genuine compassion will transform the entire experience from merely a must-do to a sincerely love to-do!
Money or food are both graciously charitable for Zakat Al-Fitr, however they are typically generic material and giving them does not usually require much thinking. Hence we need to actively engage our minds while planning for Zaka to actually feel what we are doing, and accordingly give with genuine empathy. Giving of Zakat Al-Fitr should be a mutual ritual, in which both the giver and receiver experience the spiritual depth of it. With the prevailing sense of positivity marking this time of year, we can definitely get inspired to put that cash in a thoughtful context, whether in terms of determining the amount or way of giving. If you put your mind to it, you can come up with pretty useful forms of charity for members of your community – all it takes is some heartfelt mental effort! To give with profound meaning, you need to actually take the time and think of the following aspects: 1. If you where to prioritize, who are the people that need support in your immediate community, any specific individuals or families? 2. Who are next on the list from the extended community? Under-privileged groups, people with special-needs, etc. 3. What can you do to truly make a difference? 4. How will you go about doing it? Will you give it directly to the beneficiary, or to an entity that handles Zaka distribution? The key question here is the 3rd one; if you figure out what it is that will make a difference, then you have certainly engaged your mind in the act of giving. For instance, if you have a widow or divorcee in your family whom you know may need support, find out how you can show compassion in this occasion and

do it. That family with the unfortunate circumstance may simply need to feel joy and companionship in Eid, then help provide just that. As for the materialistic support, provide it in the most appropriate way. It may be that it is easier if you give to the younger ones, or transfer an amount through the bank, but just make sure you are sensitive to the situation, and more importantly, do it with a smile. However, when it comes to the community at large you may need to exert higher mental energy. You need to look around and think of those who need support – and remember, giving charity can be done in the obvious materialistic sense, plus the further contribution with time and energy. Then realistically consider the society’s members to whom you can genuinely provide support for, it may be that your priority this year goes to orphans. If so, prepare the Zaka and dedicate some time to actually go and celebrate with them. You may have also noticed the overflow of construction workers around town, you can decide to give your Eid Zaka to the workers in your area to support them considering their relatively tough working conditions, and most probably, not very high wages. It is simple - just look around with a caring eye, think compassionately and give genuinely. In doing this, you’ll surely redefine the concept of Zakat Al-Fitr in your mental dictionary and will enjoy Eid with more authenticity. 34 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Happy EID
Creative
Eidiyas By Angelic Salha
A popular and important tradition associated with Eid is the ‘Eidiya,’ which is usually money given to children and teens from the adults in the family as a gift. I remember one year, one of my aunts got creative and gave us toys instead. The happiness she filled us with was limitless, I still remember getting a teddy bear that I have until this day. The memory of that day stays with me every Eid holiday because of the special and sentimental value it carried. As an adult now, I would like to continue this important tradition and be more creative in giving gifts, that’s why here at DJ we compiled different ways to give the Eidiya and help continue our favorite tradition. Cash is usually the best way to go, but let’s add some creativity to make it more fun and exciting for both the givers and the recipients.
1. A Surprise in a Balloon
Purchase the right amount of balloons and place the money within it or within a small envelope that’s placed in the balloon. Then start inflating them – NOT with helium of course unless you’ll be attaching a weight and a string. Then bring them to your Eid gathering and place them all over the house for the kids to find. You could write their names on the balloons or on the envelopes to lessen confusion. Just make sure no one’s too bothered by all the popping!
2. A Treasure Box
I’m sure all of us have a lot of old books that we hardly read anymore, so why not put them to good use? Open up the book and glue each all of the pages together, then carve out the center of the book on the first page to create a hollow space. Put the Eidiya into the cavity and then gift-wrap the book box. This way you’ll surprise the recipients with a treasure box to keep and is also filled with cash!

3. A Gift Card
With all the variety of shops and department stores in town, you can pick the recipient’s favorite store and purchase a gift card with the amount of money you want to give them. Buy a greeting card and put the gift card in the envelope, sign the greeting card and set a date to go shopping together. This way the gift is more personalized to each recipient and you get to plan a special day to spend together.
4. Money Tissue Box
This is recommended as a humorous gift for the practical jokers of the family. Get a small tissue box and carefully pull out the tissues. Exchange SR100 into tens and fives. Tape the money end to end, then roll it up and place the money back into the tissue box. Tape a tissue to the end of the money roll - keep the tissue hanging out slightly from the box. Stick a plain white sticker on the box and write something like “A Valuable Tissue Box” or just wait until someone sneezes and reaches for a tissue!
6. Treasure Box Hunting
“The thrill of the hunt”…this could be challenging for kids and teens, or even adults who are kids at heart. Get an old box that isn’t in use anymore, place the money inside it along with some gold shaped sweets. Bury the box in the backyard or hide it somewhere in the house. Buy a puzzle, put it together and then draw the instructions to the location of the box on the back of the puzzle. Break apart the puzzle and then put the pieces back in the box and give it to the recipients. The thrill of the puzzle followed by a treasure hunt will add to the excitement of the gift!

5. Money Origami
Who doesn’t like art? The Japanese paper art called Origami is a perfect gift method. Origami gifts are creative and different at the same time. With simple steps, you can make cool shapes like a collared shirt or a flower from money. You can make any shape that the recipients love or would actually buy with the money. For instructions on how to create your own origami gifts, check out this http://www.homemade-gifts-made-easy.com/ money-origami.html
7. Money Soap
This is recommended if you really want to surprise the recipients. From the super market you can find scented bar soaps that come in a small plastic box. Choose a scent that the recipients love, take out the soap bar and place the amount of money you want to give, then place the soap bar back on top of the money. Gift-wrap the plastic box and pass them to each recipient. The expression on each one’s face after unwrapping the gift will be priceless…you may have to wait until they wash their hands before they discover the cash gift!
When you start right, you execute right. Prepare your construction documents smart.

Eid Festival at

Home! By Yousra Elwi Photography by Rayan Nawawi
What is a celebration without decoration? Whenever we have a special occasion coming up, we plan and prepare to make sure we’re setting the right mood for it. Eid Al-Fitr should be no exception, in fact, we should put more effort and creativity in enlivening the spiritual and personal spirit of this occasion. It will allow families to engage together in a joyful activity and the festive ambiance of this occasion will fill the air! The Islamic Calendar has only 2 official Eids, so let’s add some colorful touches to spark that celebratory thrill!
Welcoming Eid at the door Use letter blocks to have a personalized Eid greeting at your front door you can have something fun like ‘Eid Al Ka’ak’ or ‘Busy Eiding’ – be creative, it is your front door after all! For a DIY option, get cardboard and cork, cut them into letters and stick the cardboard to the cork; or even better, just cut the cardboard and artistically design your Eid greeting with spray paint. Buy various colors of metallic paper, cut out stars and stick them all around to complete the scene. Get the kids in the family involved, they’ll absolutely love it!

Eid-inspired cupcakes and sweets With all the creative dessert caterers around town, this should be quite simple! Order cupcakes with Eid greeting messages like ‘Eid Mubarak’ or ‘Happy Eid,’ or even better, bake your own crescent and starshaped ka’ak (you can find cutters, pans and piping tips to do this in most supermarkets)! Share them with your visitors and neighbors – it will definitely spread the joy.
The Eid surprise package Wrapped boxes are always exciting! Whether you are a parent, spouse, sibling or child – prepare a wrapped box with a thoughtful gift inside for your family members. It doesn’t have to be expensive, it could just be something you know they love or want, even if it is a bar of their favorite chocolates! Parents, if you are giving Eidiya, creatively wrap it to add that element of suspense! This idea will thrill your little visitors as well. Try to choose things that are relevant for the occasion, oriental bangle bracelets for the girls and moneyboxes for the boys would be fantastic!

Stars under your roof On the last day before Eid, get star-shaped helium balloons and have the word ‘Eid’ written all over them! Having this done in Arabic will better manifest the theme. We know that Party Land can do this, but probably most gift shops can provide this service too.
Light up the festival Get some arabesque-design lanterns and candle holders and use them as the main lighting source to set the mood! Luckily in Jeddah, these are widely available; you can find a lot of options to suit your budget and your taste. Check out the big furniture stores (Pottery Barn, Ikea, Home Centre) and some specialized outlets like The Body Shop customize unique candleholders for the occasion. Again, making them yourself, with friends or family, makes it much more special! All you’ll need is empty glass jars, dimensional paint, glass paint and a paintbrush. Pour some glass paint in the jar, cover all sides using the paintbrush, design the external side of the jar with the dimensional paint, leave to dry and there you go! Whether you buy them or make them, it is guaranteed that they’ll create that authentic festive spirit.
Scented candles/artificial corolla from Ikea
The scent of Eid On the morning of the first day of Eid, aromatize your home with the oriental scents of Bukhoor (or candles if you prefer). Don’t underestimate the power of scents, they definitely elicit special sensations and diffuse a distinctive aura, in addition to the aromatherapy benefits associated with certain essences. For example, sandalwood is known to be an effective antidepressant, while musk gives a high sense of peacefulness. So make sure you spread those pleasant feelings all around your house!

The Talented Pens of Women Calligraphers
By Habib Shaikh
Abdullah ibn Abbas said, “Calligraphy is the tongue of the hand.” This basic form of writing became elevated to a high art throughout the Islamic empire. With its emphasis on learning and knowledge, combined with Islam’s strictures against idolatry in all forms; calligraphic artistry became the dominant form of art as well as communication. Women excelled in the art of calligraphy, yet their names are little known outside the world of academia. Historians have recorded that during the eight-hundred-year Muslim rule of Al-Andalus (Spain), there were over 20,000 female calligraphers and Qur’anic scribes! In the eastern quarters of Cordoba, there were one hundred and seventy women copying the Quran in the kufi script alone. Women calligraphers practiced this art all over the Islamic world, from Spain to Syria, Iraq, Persia and India. They even competed with each other in the copying of wonderful Qur’ans. During the Ottoman period, calligraphy gained a very high standing in society. Several women calligraphers flourished.

Among them were Ibrat; Zahidah Salma Khanum; Sharifah Aishah Khanum; Silfinaz Khanum; Faridah Khanum, the Qastumonian; Khadijah Kuzaydah Khanum Celebi; and Nukhah Khanum. Many of the Ottoman sultans were themselves calligraphers, as were their mothers. Durrah Khanum, the mother of Sultan Mahmud Khan, copied a Qur’an in the year 1759AD. This Qur’an was held by the Mahmudiyah Library in Madinah. It is said that it was carried by the Ottoman Turks to Istanbul when they left the Hijaz. Among the most splendid works of the Turkish women calligraphers is a Qur’an copied by AlSharifah and hafizah Zulaykhah Khatimi AlSadi, the daughter of Al-Haj Abd Al-Karim Zadah Bisar-I Yari, in 1860AD.
In Spain, Al-Nuddar (985AD) was not only a poet, but also knowledgeable in mathematics, and was involved in all aspects of learning and in calligraphy. Lubna (1004AD), the secretary of AlMuntasir (977AD) produced a variety of fine calligraphic works. Muznah (969AD), the secretary of Nasir Al-Din, was one of the most distinguished calligraphers.
Al-Rida, the daughter of Al-Fath, was a well known writer in Baghdad. She was prolific writer and copier. Another well known woman in Baghdad was Shuhdah bint Al-Ubri. Nicknamed, ‘the glory of womanhood,’ she was a muhaddithah, a compiler of the hadith, who knew by heart the traditions of the Messenger of God (Pbuh). She penned beautiful calligraphy in the fashion of Fatimah bint Al-Aqra.
Fatimah, the daughter of Al-Hasan AlAqra, wrote in mansub style, following the manner of the great calligrapher AlBawwab. Calligraphers all over the Islamic world imitated her.

From Day to Night
Sometimes it’s hard enough just deciding what to wear on any average day, let alone how to choose an outfit that could work for both day and night. But for the modern day woman, knowing how to maintain a balance with family, social life and work is essential. The following tips will help you pull off a successful transition between daytime and evening especially around this special time when you will be visiting family and friends.
Daytime Look
Evening Look
When getting dressed in the morning, plan ahead by choosing clothes that you know will work both in the daytime and at night. Wear a cute and sophisticated dress that is versatile and can be transformed easily. Keep a pair of heels in your car that will match your outfit as perfectly as your daytime pumps. These little changes will save you from a hasty trip home just to change.

You’ve
GOT to try..
Turkish Meshwiyat’s
‘Karisik’
Attention meat lovers! As we all know, Jeddah is full of Middle Eastern dining treasures, some tucked away and hidden from sight and mind. We all have our favorite local sharwarma and kebab spots; in most cases it’s not so much about the actual restaurant and its appearance… but the food. Let’s face it – it’s not always about fine dining, is it? Sometimes we just want to sit at home and curl up with a good old scrumptious kebab! The DJ crew hunted for the perfect ambrosial and divine kebab, where the mixture of beef and chicken is simply luscious. We recommend the dish ‘Karisik’ from Turkish Meshwiyat, which is available in different portions. So whether you’re eating solo or as a family, you can order accordingly. The plate consists of an assortment of different meats such as chicken, beef, kebab cubes, and lamb chops. The meat is fragrant and looks exquisite. As soon as you take a bite… you can taste the Mediterranean flavor, and the meal leaves you completely satisfied yet yearning for more. Location: Al-Salama Dist. Tel: +966-2-6621910

Uptown 966’s Tomato Soup
For all tomato soup lovers we at DJ highly recommend the tomato basil soup at Uptown 966. Recently it has been our obsession and it’s definitely a must try! The soup is garnished with croutons and complemented with a panini bread/bun. Usually you would order it as a starter however, it’s a complete meal that will leave you full and satisfied. The tomatoes are roasted, mashed, and seasoned with basil and a bit of cream cheese to complete the flavor. It’s really affordable if you’re on a budget. Next time you visit Uptown make sure you try this amazing soup. Location: Andalus St. Tel: +966-2-6995911
Mystery Diner Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf On my way to work one day, I decided to pass by Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf on Khalidyah St. to grab one of their yummy blueberry muffins, which are the best in Jeddah in my opinion. The coffee shop was very clean and inviting with a welcoming Saudi staff and soft jazz music playing in the background. I ordered the muffin and a hot Caramel Macchiato drink. Their prompt service really impressed me. When I received my order the cashier even advised me not to add sugar immediately, but to try my drink first. So I followed his advice and discovered that my drink was perfectly balanced. I appreciated the serving guy’s comment and thanked him. On the weekend I went with my husband to Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in Al-Shate’e Dist. since it’s bigger and has an outdoor patio. We were looking forward to an enjoyable Thursday morning breakfast, I couldn’t wait for my husband to taste my favorite blueberry muffin. I have to say that I didn’t expect what I saw. The place had a dirty floor, dirty tables, and glass windows with fingerprints all over! In addition, the window display of the fridge was also dirty and empty with a few items that seemed to be leftover from last night, not to mention the Rotana music channel was playing. We
decided to carry on with our orders, but no one was at the cashier, so we had to wait for a few minutes for someone to show up. I ordered the ‘Brek O’ Day Hot Breakfast’ and my husband ordered ‘The Food for Thought’ and hot tea for the both of us. After ordering, we tried to find the cleanest spot to sit and I asked one of the workers to lower/mute the music since it was annoying. The order took too long, although we were the only people there. When the breakfast finally arrived, everything seemed to be okay; however I didn’t like the cheap quality of the jam, butter, or cheese. Not to mention the tea was too hot that we couldn’t even hold it with the cardboard sleeve around and they served us the weirdest type of red tea, which we replaced with regular red tea. When we finished our meal, my husband went to bring the car while I spoke to the cashier about my comments and told him about Khalidiah branch’s excellent food and service. As I was talking to the Saudi guy, he turned his back on me - not bothering to listen or respond to my feedback! I felt so upset and left with the urge to write about this unsatisfactory experience. Eid Prayer By Angelic Salha
“O children of Adam, we have provided you with garments to cover your bodies, as well as for luxury. But the best garment is the garment of righteousness. These are some of God’s signs, that they may take heed.” Al-Araf Verse 26
Ramadan is the month of fasting for Muslims, and the end of this special month is the beginning of Eid Al Fitr (Festival of the FastBreaking), which is celebrated on the 1st day of Shawwal (the 10th month of the Islamic calendar). So after the sun sets on the last day of Ramadan, people start searching for the new crescent moon. As soon as the moon (Hilal) is sighted - the celebration of Eid begins! Eid is the time to spread happiness, love, and joy among all the family members. On the Eid day, Muslims (men, women and children) wear new clothes and attend special Eid Prayer ceremonies in their nearby mosque to thank Allah for another successful completion of Ramadan. Salat Al Eid (Eid Prayer) begins when the sun reaches approximately two meters above the horizon until it reaches its highpoint before Duhur (Noon) prayer. Muslims wake up relatively early in the morning—always before sunrise—take a shower, put on new clothes, and apply (Oudh)

perfume. It is recommended to have a small breakfast (as a sign of not fasting on that day) before attending the special Eid prayer. It is a Sunnah (custom of the Prophet Muhammad [PBUH]) that the Sadaqat-AlFitr, an obligatory charity, is paid to the poor and the needy before performing the ‘Eid prayer. After the prayers, families and friends gather for an Eid meal to celebrate the occasion together. Children in particular have a joyful Eid celebration as they get clothes, gifts, and sweets from all their relatives.
“Keep your prayers from the declining of the sun till the darkness of the night and the morning recitation; surely the morning recitation is witnessed.” Al-Isra’ Verse 78
Happy EID
The Eid Prayer
The Eid Prayer’s Sermon
The Eid prayer is similar to the Friday prayer – both have two rakaat (cycles) followed by a prayer recited out loud and a Khutbah (Sermon). However, unlike the Friday prayer, the Eid prayer’s khutbah follows the prayer. The second difference lies in its number of takbirs (when the prayer leader says, “God is the Greatest” which starts the prayer). In the ‘Eid prayer there are 6 additional takbir added to the original in the prayer’s first cycle, and 5 added to the second cycle of prayer after rising from the sitting position to stand for the second cycle. The first cycle: The opening takbir, then the prayer leader says “Allahu Akbar” [God is the Greatest] six times and then recites the opening surah from the Qur’an (Surat Al-Fatihah) followed by a short reading from another surah of the Qur’an or one of the smaller suwar. Arising for the second cycle - one says “Allahu Akbar” to arise and stand for the second cycle of prayer, then state “Allahu Akbar” 5 more times before reading the opening surah from the Qur’an again and so on like a regular prayer.
In addition to the normal recognized procedures related to the sermon, the Eid Khutbah is usually relevant to current affairs and provides the community with a feeling of empowerment and purpose. The speech is relevant to the attendees by drawing on valuable lessons that are practical and measurable. It also encourages the community to take part in the different committees and programs that are held in the local mosque. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Let the free women, the virgins, and the menstruating women attend the Eid prayer, and witness the good and the supplications of the believers. As for the menstruating women, they should stay away from the Musallah (i.e.. should not participate in the prayer itself).” (Saheeh al-Bukhari and Saheeh Muslim)
Note: if one is following the Imam (prayer leader) at a mosque, it’s much easier than remembering all these details.

The Value of the
Last 10 days
of Ramadan and Lailat Al-Qadr By Aisha Zamir
“In the name of God, the Beneficent the Merciful Indeed we sent it (The Holy Quran) down on the Night of Power. What will convey to you what the Night of Power is like! Better Is the Night the angels and the Spirit descend By the permission of their Lord for every affair Peace it is, till the break of dawn” Chapter 97 Al-Qadr Lailat Al-Qadr (The Night Of Power) is an extremely important and special night because Muslims believe this is the night when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Although Ramadan is a holy month itself, Lailat Al-Qadr is considered the holiest night of the entire year. This night Allah invites His servants to come closer to His Divine Presence. Every worship and good deed is accredited, increased, and valued as one thousand months of worshipping. Allah Almighty has granted an enormous power to this night.
The Prophet (PBUH) said: ‘Seek Lailat ul-Qadr among the odd numbered nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.’ [Bukhari, Muslim] Though all parts of Ramadan are full of blessings and rewards, its last ten days hold a special status as reflected in the recommendations and practices of the Messenger of Allah, salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, and his companions. The last ten days are also known for Itekaf (spiritual retreat). The Prophet (PBUH) used to perform Itekaf in the mosque during the
last ten days of Ramadan, barely sleeping during that time. Itekaf requires a total devotion to Allah; it is a sort of vacation with Him. The time is spent worshipping, performing extra Salahs (ritual prayers) and going to the mosque every night and performing Taraweeh prayers, reciting Quran, making thikrs (remembrance of Allah) and duaas (supplications). Those who cannot perform Itekaf for ten days, should try to do it for a shorter time, if only for one night or a day or two.

Stay Sanitized, Fresh & Healthy during Ramadan & Eid
Ramadan and Eid are unique and special times for all Muslims, especially in Jeddah. As the gateway to Makkah and Madinah, Jeddah’s festive atmosphere is world- renowned. Millions of Muslims from all over the world pass through Jeddah in order to perform Umrah because it is said that performing Umrah in the holy month of Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj in merit and excellence. The Prophet (PBUH) himself insisted on the importance of the performance of Umrah during the holy month of Ramadan, especially in its last 10 days and during the night of Lailat Al Qadr. So, as Ramadan nears its conclusion, Jeddahwis tend to go more often to the mosque and pray taraweeh. During this time, the masjid can become extremely crowded, especially during the last 10 days. At DJ we want to help you end your Ramadan on a healthy note by staying clean, sanitized, and germ-free when you’re in these congested places. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized how vital it is to keep clean, but with millions of people passing through Jeddah, it is inevitable that they will bring numerous germs and viruses along with them. It is not something that can be avoided because of the vast amount of people coming into the country. Even though some precautions have been taken, such as the compulsory meningitis vaccination for those applying for an Umrah visa, other illnesses and germs are in the air during this season. It is fundamental to try to remain germ-free in order to avoid falling ill.

“Did you know that up to 90% of all diseases are spread by hand?” So, how do we keep our
vulnerable children and ourselves germ-free when visiting crowded places and taking them to the mosque? It’s simple - while packing your necessities when travelling to Makkah or Madinah or even just going to the local mosque, pack the small and conveniently compact NO-Germ Sanitizer!
NO-Germs Products:
NO-GERM Sanitizer: When you are HAND in Makkah and Madinah, it is a busy time and you are unconsciously touching things, this is especially true for little children as they love to explore. During this time it is hard to keep an eye on them, and to make things easier for you, just apply this NO Germ Hand sanitizer to their hands and your own, it’s effective up to 4 hours and contains organic and natural ingredients, perfect for children. It is pocket sized and has 50 uses per bottle, therefore it does not need to be constantly refilled, thus wasting the product and having to buy more like you would with other sanitizers. It can be used before you are eating or after using the toilet as this product kills any kind of virus, which most ethanol-based gels don’t. It is completely alcohol-free, so your skin won’t be left feeling dry and irritated. Please bear in mind that when using these products, they do not contain any kind of alcohol or perfume so you do not need to worry about breaking your Ihram or Wudu.
NO-GERM SURFACE Sanitizer:
This is a perfect solution for when you are in Makkah and Madinah touching the same surface as millions of other people, therefore inviting infectious diseases. So when you’re picking up a Quran in Makkah and you are preparing to pray in the Holy Mosque, this product can be easily sprayed over your personal belongings. More importantly, this product can be sprayed over the toilet seats and taps, which are used by everyone.
No-Germs FRESH AIR Sanitizer:
We all know how polluted and congested it becomes in these cities. So when the pungent smell is becoming unbearable, the air too stuffy, and you are becoming paranoid with people coughing and sneezing near you and your family - then this is the ideal product for you. It reduces the transmission of infectious disease in closed areas, especially respiratory diseases that are common during busy times in Makkah and Madinah. The Air Sanitizer does not leave any residue, so it is quick, easy, and efficient to use.

Get Rid of Post Eid Weight
IN JUST 3 DAYS! By Aisha Zamir
When the Eid season comes around, festivities, parties and food aren’t too far behind. Eid is the time of the year when everyone puts their diet on hold because of reasons like, “It’s a celebration, eat as much as you like!” or “There are no diets on Eid!” However, for most of us, while we’re only too happy to set aside diet promises, our indulgences will always come back and bite us right where it hurts - the thighs, stomach and buttocks. The good news is that Eid weight usually does not amount to a lot, making the goal to attain your pre-Eid weight much more attainable. Here are some things to chew on to get right back into shape after the holidays. This 3-day diet can be used as a quick detox diet and it had also been said to help you lose 10 pounds. This is perfect to get rid of any post Eid weight.
WHAT YOU CAN EAT:
The 3-Day Diet is a very specific food plan that must be followed precisely. Portions must be eaten exactly as specified and dieters are warned not to overeat. Otherwise, the promised 10-pound weight loss may not be achieved. It is a strict diet and must be followed as precise. Just remember it is only 3 days! Likewise, dieters should not undereat, even if they are not hungry. The detailed plan does not mention or recommend any exercise. However after finishing this diet it is important to follow a rigorous exercise in order to stop gaining weight quickly. This diet works by some unspecified magical force! The combination of the suggested foods included in this plan is supposed to create a unique metabolic reaction and boost fat burning.

HOW TO MAKE JILLIAN’S DETOX WATER We’ve doubled the original recipe the more the better!
1. Take one gallon of bottled water. Preferably use spring or mineral water if it’s available.
2. Add in four tablespoons of lemon juice. 3. Add two tablespoons of pure cranberry juice. It’s
important that you get 100% juice, as juice blends and cocktails contain a lot of sugar and only consist of 10% juice. You might need to go to an organic food store, or process cranberries yourself in order to get the juice. 4. Then, add in two dandelion root tea bags. Most likely the only place in Jeddah you’ll be able to purchase this is from organic food stores such as Abazeer organic stores or GNC. This dandelion tea, as you can tell from the name, is slightly bitter therefore it may take some getting used too. Due to its detoxing excellence it could possibly cause a slight turmoil in your stomach. But nonetheless any sort of uneasiness simply means that the detox is working, and your body is detoxing itself.

Full Lashes Mascara
Baies Candle
Angelic Salha
Walaa Attas
I love H&M and all it’s products, especially their cosmetics. The Full Lashes Mascara has a thick brush that gives lashes volume and fullness. It also gives your lashes a natural full look with out feeling the weight on them. It’s available at every H&M branch and it’s quite affordable.
One of the most popular items in the Diptyque’s line Baies is a blend of blackcurrant and Bulgarian rose. Evoking the scent of a green riverside garden. The scent is not too flowery or sweet but rather sophisticated. This enchanting scent is a unique and exquisite product that will keep you coming back for more.
Avengers vs. X-Men
The Hunger Games
Joseph Kurashi
Halah Gandeel
Two teams of earth’s mightiest heroes on Marvel Comics. Once allies worked together for the common goals, now turned against each other over different plots. Action pack battle of super powered heroes. I myself happen to be a huge X-Men fan.
I’m sure most of you have already seen the first movie, but I I always find that the original book is always a lot more satisfying. “The Hunger Games” trilogy by Suzanne Collins should be a must on everyone’s reading list. It’s a thrilling reading experience you don’t want to miss.
