Saudis were glued to their TV screens along with the rest of the world as the London 2012 Olympic Games unfolded in August. Cheering on the local heroes as they took the world stage and proudly paraded alongside athletes of every nationality was a beautiful sight to behold. “The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat” sums up the once-in-a-lifetime experience which these games represent to so many talented young people; viewers of the 2012 Games may be participants in 2016 after watching the inspirational achievements of every single athlete.

THOUGHTS TO P O N D E R

Talking to Kids About Bullying... Bullying is part of the child’s experience when learning how to socialize and knowing what’s right and wrong. When a child is put under the pressure of so many strangers, like in school, insecurities are increased and defenses come up, but kids usually lack enough empathy, so they take any means possible to feel confident and comfortable. As much as parents are able to, talking to kids about what to do when faced

with adversity at school is vital. It’s merely a lesson on what’s right and what’s wrong. It’s important for them to know that the people who are hurting others are the ones who are losing, that they can defend themselves if they wish but it’s better to forgive, and that there’s nothing wrong with them just because another kid is pointing out meaningless flaws.

Thumbs up to...

Increasing sport activities for children after school

By allowing our children to watch and play on the ‘idiot box’ (TV) constantly, it is inevitably bad for them and their health. Due to the vast amount of energy that they carry in comparison to adults, they need physical outlets. Fortunately, there are a growing number of sport activities that cater specifically to children. There are many schools in Jeddah that have after school sport activities, which help children become active. An added benefit is that they may discover a hidden talent for a sport! There are also many private coaches specializing in certain sports such as tennis and judo etc. Children who grow up in an active environment will boost their self-confidence, improve their concentration at school, and more importantly, may avoid major diseases in the future.

Thumbs Down to... Obesity in children

Obesity is a major problem in Jeddah due to the countless fast-food joints, unhealthy eating habits, and overall lack of exercise. It is scientifically proven that from a young age, once children start to eat healthy, they will grow up and adopt the same habits and therefore reduce their chance of heart disease. Did you know that the infamous Hardee’s Double Thick Burger has 1,250 calories in it? We are naive to these hidden calories, but by allowing your children to consume these kinds of foods on a regular basis, you are encouraging a risk of a heart attack. It is important to explain the importance of healthy eating and an active life-style to children so that they will grow up to become fit adults. 8

In Jeddah By Aisha Zamir

An important decision which will have long-term ramifications for your family is deciding which school to enroll your children in. Make the right decision and you could put them on a path toward lifelong learning, a prestigious college education, and a successful career. Choose wrong, and you will regret the consequences. Business Who’s Who

Standing Ovations

By Dilara Hafiz

The first Olympic Games were held in 776BC. At that time, both the participants and the spectators were men; strictly no women allowed! Fast-forward 2,000 years to 1900, the first Olympic Games which women participated in. Saudi Arabian women proudly joined the ranks of these select few athletes in the 2012 London Olympic Games with the presence of 19 year-old Sarah Attar and 16 year-old Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani. It’s no surprise to see Muslim women taking part in a celebration of excellence. As one of the most progressive religions of the time, Islam awarded women the right to own property, the right to retain their own name, and the right to vote in the seventh century. Indeed, Khadijah, the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) first wife, was a successful businesswoman and widow prior to her second marriage. She remains the quintessential role model for Muslim women – the first convert and the first Muslim woman entrepreneur. Who can fault Saudi women for following in such illustrious footsteps?

Future Olympic Games will see greater participation from both genders in the years to come. Attar and Shaherkani are two brave young women who faced down critics by representing their country with honor and pride. The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud, gave permission for these women to join the Saudi Arabian Olympic Team. Their presence on the international world stage defies the stereotype of the oppressed Arab woman and replaces it with the inspirational message of woman’s empowerment and strength. Their ground-breaking steps as female athletes actually represent the beginning of a marathon journey for Muslim women around the world. Judo, track, and any other sport imaginable are now open to women without the barrier or excuse of race, religion, or nationality. Way to go, ladies!

For The Sake of Your Children

Aiming

High By Najwa Kaawach

It’s a new school year, meaning a new start. Are you slacking around while you watch your friends get involved with school life? Are they aiming high, while you are hanging low? Well, it’s time to move out of your comfort zone and be daring to try new things to make this year at school unforgettable and successful!

Start now and you will be prepared to make the best out of the new school year.

Here are 6 steps:

1. Get Involved!

One of the easiest ways of taking part in your school and doing something new is by getting involved with school activities. Make sure to keep your eyes open for any notices going around up at your school for things such as soccer try-outs, school show auditions, and afterschool activities. If you need a little push, ask a friend to tag along. Once you put yourself out there, you will gain new experiences and make new friends in the process.

36 DESTINATION JEDDAH

2. Volunteer!

If someone is looking for help in a subject or a teacher needs a student to write a speech for an assembly etc., then do it! You won’t only be helping them, but also helping yourself. People will appreciate your selfless volunteering, you will have a good time, and you will create stronger bonds within the school community.

5. Stay Organized

At the start of the year make sure to keep track of all your homework and assignments. You don’t want to have so much clutter and leave everything to the last minute before deadlines as this is going to cause stress and drive you crazy. Plan ahead, write down important due dates, and be prepared!

In order to keep track of everything, here are a few simple ways to stay organized: • Have a special folder that is dedicated to keeping all your assignments and tasks or keep a separate folder for each subject.

3. Expand Yourself!

Expanding yourself academically is an even better way to give this New Year great success. Say you need to improve your grades in Math? Set a target for yourself to get a higher grade than last year and work on it (get tutoring, spend more time studying, or form a study group.) Organize your time and place your targets as your priority, then leave the extra time for guilt-free fun.

4. Be Realistic!

When setting goals, make sure they are realistic. Don’t just say “I want to do better in so and so,” instead be specific and say “I want to get 90% on my next Math exam.” If you make unrealistic targets you will only be disappointing yourself when you start finding them impossible to achieve.

• Get a small carry on calendar that you can readily access. When something comes up, you can easily write it down. The calendar will tell you when you need to do what. You can find these things from Jarir or Tihama Bookstores • Make a ‘to do’ list that tells you what you need to complete each day, Then when you are done, you can mark it off and get a sense of satisfaction. • If you own an iPhone or iPad, then the application “iProcrastinate” is great as it will help you keep track of what you need to do and remind you of deadlines.

6. Remember

Think about your last school year, what did you like about it? Was there anything you wanted to change? Do differently? Act on those questions to help guide you to a better year – Good Luck! DESTINATION JEDDAH 37

Back

To School Shopping!

By Najwa Kaawach

At the start of a new school year everyone is always out rushing for last minute supplies! School shopping always seems like a hassle and you always end up going to the same place and paying the same prices. Read this and your life will be made much simpler as these tips will guide you on when, where and how to shop!

Tips to guide you where and when to shop! 2. Make a list

1. Be an Early Bird The first tip to survive the rush is to go early in the morning! A lot of people usually go out at night, and sleep in all day. Don’t be lazy -be first. You can leave at 10 am and get all you need before the shops close for prayer at 12:30 pm Also, don’t start your school shopping at the last minute, try and get it done a month earlier. Do this and you will be saving yourself a whole lot of trouble.

38 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Be sure to know what you are looking for so you don’t miss out on anything while you’re shopping You don’t want to be running around trying to figure out what you or your child needs last minute. Have a small list with you so that you can tick the things you bought in order. Organize before hand if you or your child already has things you can re-use instead of buying new ones such as an old backpack etc. Then put down all the necessities and be specific, two blue pens, one box of pencils and an eraser. Most of the times student are given a list of things to get from their school, which helps a lot, but make sure you know where to find these things so you can buy them all at once. This is more efficient and fast!

3. Know your bookstores! The most important part is to always know where to go before anything! Check out the list of well-known bookstores in Jeddah.

TOP Bookstores in Jeddah!

2. Jarir Bookstore:

1. Tihama Bookstore: Tihama is excellent with supplies for school, especially when it comes to bags, pens, folders and the main accessories. They have a wide range of supply, but the book section is quite small and does not have a large variety as Jarir and is mostly filled with Arabic books for children and a few for adults. If you want to do solo shopping then Tihama would be fine, as they do not have employees that are helpful. Overall, if you are shopping for your children then this shop is great for kids, toys and things they would love to have in their backpacks for school!

This is the go to place for books and supplies. It has everything you need and everyone loves Jarir! You can find amazing art supplies, laptops, mobiles and books etc. if you are looking for a specific book, Jarir would be the best place to go to. The customer service there is excellent as the employees are very helpful and know where to find everything. The problem is that since everyone goes to Jarir, you might get caught in a crowd of people if you shop for your supplies at the wrong time or too late. Even though the one in Sari Street is more accessible, usually the one in Jarir Mall is less crowded and the space is much bigger, so even if there were a lot of people, you probably wouldn’t notice.

DESTINATION JEDDAH 39

4. Obaikan:

If you need an alternative to Jarir, a place, which people may not always go to and is half the price, then we recommend Al Fanoos. It has an endless supply and not only that but it’s cheap! It consists of only one floor; the one located behind Souq al Shate is huge while the one in Tahliah is like a small corner store. If you need good art supply, then Fanoos is the definite place to go. However there are not many employees so at times you will find yourself searching for something on your own, yet if you get the chance to ask, they know where everything is. Another downer is that this bookstore is not good at all with books.

The name says it all “Stationary”. If you’re looking to buy stationary and supplies then this would also be a good place to go to. Go up to the first floor to find an endless supply from stickers, cards and other accessories. The prices are around the same as Jarir Bookstore and are fair. Next to it is a small bookstore called “Little Books” which has a wide variety of children’s books. The stationary store itself is not the place to go to for electronics, DVDs and books. However, it has a larger stationary supply than Jarir. The service is all right, they lack in employees as it is a large store but if you come to ask for anything they will kindly help you.

3. Al Fanoos:

A large one-floor store, this bookstore is best for its Arabic books, although it still has a small variety of English books; it isn’t as well stocked as Jarir. The English books they have are more educational rather than entertaining. They have books for different scientific studies, languages and other subjects. It has a large amount of stationary although wouldn’t be a place to go to for electronics as they lack in that area. It is one of the largest bookstores in Jeddah, a part from Jarir. The service there however is not very helpful. There aren’t many employees and they don’t know where everything is. The atmosphere is very dull and the shopping experience is not enjoyable.

Thinking of Getting a

Pet?

Here’s what you should know... By Aisha Zamir

Getting a pet is an exciting event in the life of a child, but it is a decision, which will involve the entire family. Be sure to select the right animal by researching its food needs, life span, size etc. before you head out to the pet store. First things first, check out Pets In Need as an option since they have many abandoned kittens and dogs that are in need of new home. Unlike the major pet stores, they also provide the correct information you need about each pet such as its vaccinations, whether the animal has been castrated or spayed yet, etc. You can visit their Facebook or Twitter to look at the animals’ availability. As Jeddah’s only non-profit pet charity, they do their best to ensure the animal is healthy before they give it away to the new owner, and if it is a ‘rescue’ pet, then they will tell you step by step what to do and where to go to provide the proper treatment your new pet needs. Getting a Puppy?

Owning a puppy brings a great deal of pleasure and whilst you will want yours to have a long, happy, and healthy life, it is almost inevitable that your puppy will need veterinary treatment at some point. 42 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Health checks Puppies need to be taken to a vet for an initial health check and to be registered with a veterinary practice. You need to check your puppy’s body regularly for lumps, swellings, rashes, cuts, grass seeds etc. You will also need to keep an eye on its teeth, gums, limbs, nails, dew claws, eyes, ears, and for testicular or mammary lumps, so get your puppy used to being gently touched all over and examined on a daily basis. Find a Vet service: The best vet clinics that we have come across in Jeddah are the ‘Happy Vet’ (026164030) and ‘Jeddah Vet’ (026912896)

• Your vet will advise you on vaccinations, worming, micro chipping and health issues. It is vital you follow your vet’s advice. Puppies can receive their first vaccination at proximately eight weeks, however this may vary depending on the normal practice of your vet. • Your vet will start your puppy on a course of vaccinations against the four main infectious diseases: Canine Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus. and Leptospirosis. All of these diseases can be fatal, so after its first course of vaccinations, it will need re-vaccinating annually. Keep the vaccination certificates safe, as you may need to show them at boarding kennels, dog- training classes, or if you take your dog abroad. Until your puppy is fully vaccinated, you should not take it anywhere it might come into contact with dogs or ground that may be infected, but you can take it out in your arms or in the car to get it used to different places and situations. Your puppy will also need regular worming and treatment for fleas and ticks, so follow the advice of your vet.

Additional Considerations for KidFriendly Cats 1. Adopt an older cat: When you adopt an older

cat, her temperament is fixed, so you'll get a much clearer picture of whether or not she's kid-friendly. When you adopt a kitten, you can't be sure that her playful scratchy-bitey behavior is due to youthful exuberance or ingrained in her personality.

Also, if you have very young children, an older cat is a better choice because children could accidentally hurt small kittens.

2. Spay/Neuter: Forget about providing a way for

Getting a kitten?

The kitten or cat should approach your kids readily and display affection. Purring is a very good sign. When handled, the cat should not nip or scratch. Handle the cat yourself, fairly aggressively. Don't hurt the cat, but pet firmly all over to make sure it doesn't bite when touched. Does the cat cringe or try to hide when subjected to sudden loud noises? If so, then it might not be the best choice for families with very young children. If the cat cowers or hides in a corner, it might not be a good choice in a raucous family environment.

your kids to witness the miracle of birth. Spaying or neutering your cat is the single most important action you can take to ensure that the cat will not lash out at one of your children. Toms are territorial and queens are unpredictable when in heat; either situation increases the chance that the cat might bite or scratch your child.

Kittens bred commercially, indiscriminately, and carelessly are likely to… • Develop disease • Have temperamental problems • Be difficult to housetrain • Find adjusting to family life hard • Suffer physical defects and have hereditary weaknesses Think carefully before buying and do not buy the pet because you feel sorry for it. If you buy from an unscrupulous breeder or dealer, you will be supporting their trade in misery. Every one you buy, another takes it place.

It's never too early to ingrain in your children the importance of spaying and neutering as part of responsible pet ownership. Raising your kids with cats will teach your children a lifelong love and respect for animals beyond what they'll get from watching Animal Planet. Selecting a cat with just the right temperament for your family will ensure a rich and rewarding experience for everyone. DESTINATION JEDDAH 43

Jeddah’s Top 3 Most Popular Small Animal Pets:

The top three small animals sold according to Jeddah’s pet stores are rabbits, hamsters and gerbils! So if you are considering buying your child one of these small rodents, here’s a few things you should know about taking care of one.

Rabbits:

are most likely to die. Although life spans vary, rabbits generally live for about 10 years, which means getting a pet rabbit is a significant commitment. Rabbits are social animals that generally do best when paired or grouped with other rabbits, but be sure that all rabbits are neutered or spayed to avoid unintended breeding. Rabbits generally do not like to be held or picked up; incorrect handling can result in a rabbit’s nails scratching a child, or a rabbit’s back or legs being injured or broken.

Soft and furry rabbits are available in many breeds. If you have a fairly large, secure garden, then rabbits are free to run around and play with your children. But be careful; only put them out during late afternoon, or when it is not too hot. Keep their cage in the shade or preferably inside, and always keep a bottle of cold water in their cage, this is so the rabbits can rest against something cool. The best way to encourage a rabbit health and wellbeing is by providing unlimited access to hay and water. A common rabbit diet is also to offer fresh dark leafy greens, and high-quality pellets daily. Treats can be given in proportion too, and this includes fruit such as bananas, apples, and grapes etc. But remember these are very high in sugar for rabbits, so be careful how much your rabbit consumes. Rabbits also need access to fresh water, in a special water bottle, which is available in pet stores. Water keeps them going - especially in Jeddah’s hot weather. If they don't have any food or water, they

However, the bigger the breed, the more tolerant it is of being held! So if you have children that are hands on, pick a larger rabbit. Regular vet checks are needed also, especially for their nails and teeth. Lifetime Commitment: High Needs A Companion: High Likes To Be Held: Low Grooming: Low for shorthaired breeds; High for longhaired breeds

Gerbil: The playful gerbil is busy, smart, and likes to hang out with people. Although gerbils only live for about 2-3 years, they pack a lot of living into that time. Acrobatic and social, gerbils usually do best if housed as same-sex pairs/groups.

Hamster: The charming, busy hamster is a pet that’s fun to watch. The life span of hamsters ranges from 1-3 years, with the Syrian variety living the longest. The largest and most popular breed is the Syrian, which must always be kept in its own habitat because adult Syrians usually fight, sometimes to the death. The dwarf breeds can do well in groups, but might occasionally get into fights that require housing them in separate habitats too.

Occasionally, gerbils might need separate housing if fighting occurs. With gentle handling, gerbils learn to trust their owner and enjoy interacting. Gerbils are another self-grooming pet and do not require regular grooming from their owner. However, gerbil owners should offer a dust bath to the gerbils weekly and always provide items for the gerbils to chew to keep their ever-growing teeth trimmed. Gerbils are known for their chewing ability! Lifetime Commitment: Low Needs A Companion: High Likes To Be Held: Medium Grooming: Low

While hamsters don’t usually object to being held, they usually won’t sit and cuddle. Hamsters are the busy bees of the pet world and are usually on the go. It’s most fun to watch them play in their habitat or in a play area. One drawback to hamsters is their sleep schedule, which is the opposite of a child’s. Hamsters are awake and busy at night and sleep during the day. Hamsters are self-groomers that rarely need an owner to do anything except provide an occasional dust bath with the special dust sold by pet retailers. As rodents, hamsters have constantly growing teeth that are kept in check by chewing appropriate food or toys. Lifetime Commitment: Low Needs A Companion: Low Likes To Be Held: Low Grooming: Low

‘And It Remains’ Arabic calligrapher Nasser Al-Salem had his first solo exhibition at Athr Gallery. He explores new, non-conventional, and fresh mixed media ways of producing his calligraphic designs, which use unique wooden columns and neon rods. In the past, the most traditional source of calligraphy has been ink on paper. On the contrary, Nasser’s training has been traditional, but he was inspired to do more. It was not enough to just inscribe words on paper; he needed to give the words justice, more of a meaning and creativity behind it by the use of other means than just mere inscription. This exhibition will portray Nasser’s unique and tri-partite approach to calligraphy-The word, the medium, and the aesthetic. With the specialized work of architecture under his sleeve, it allows him to incorporate both design and perspective into his work, giving it stunning 3D properties. This dynamic method provides viewers with a multi – layered path with which to approach the artwork.

One of his pieces consists of the Quran verse

‘And do you not see within yourselves?’ (Surah51, verse 21) It has been converted

into a style reminiscing the Kufic script, using reflective stainless steel. The verse has a diverse meaning to encourage ones self to contemplate themselves in order to discover the wonder, and total perfection of God’s creation. Through this use of stainless steel, it emphasizes the message of the verse, for whilst reading the work the viewer will literally also see a reflection of themselves, this in turn, encourages them to reflect upon their own creation. Inspired by his faith, Nasser’s work is devotional. It is inspired by the Quran and the tenets of his faith. Although, looking at his work, they are far from the usual scripts of ‘Alhamdulillah’ & ‘Bismillah’. His work ventures far outside calligraphy’s traditional box of contents, as it sheds light on verses and concepts that lies outside the mainstream. ‘And it remains’ is subject proof of the timeless and undeniable power of calligraphy along with prompting the viewers to re-think the norm, and the definition of calligraphy as they know it. It acknowledges its far-reaching conceptual possibilities and the impactful role that it has to play by contemporary artists such as Nasser.

what are your favorite styles and aesthetics? where does your imagination go when you’re putting together an outfit? I love excess: color, bold prints, decoration. It has a lot to do with my Southern Italian roots, but I also believe that nothing succeeds better than excess. I have no pre-set scheme when I put together an outfit. I follow my instinct. Sometimes you start with an earring, and build everything around it. Other times the dress is bold enough to speak by itself. I always like to add a personal touch to my outfits, in the form of bold accessories: stiletto heels, hats, and jewelry. Tuscan Spinach Dip The Tuscan Spinach Dip at TGI Fridays was suggested by one of our readers, Anas Tahir Khan. After sampling it ourselves, DJ completely agrees with him. The combination of rich, tangy Parmigianino and Romano cheese with spinach, artichoke hearts, sautéed onions and bell peppers is absolutely mouthwatering. Definitely a diet-buster, this rich, satisfying dip is served warm and accompanied by TGI Friday’s signature red and white corn tortilla chips. This is definitely a must try to share with a group of friends! Location: Andalus St. Tel: +966-2- 6529330

Mystery Diner Glow It’s Ramadan, and just like many other Jeddahwis. It’s the best time for me to try out new places. I had heard of glow before, but hadn’t heard anything about the food. One night, my friends and I decided to go there for Sahoor.

Clearly I managed to eat my “meal” in two minutes! I have nothing against the high prices of the menu as that is the standard of the restaurant especially in its location. However, is it crazy of me to expect my money’s worth?

As I walked in, I admired the modern, light-hearted atmosphere. It felt a lot more like a lounge then a restaurant, although it lacked the dim lighting of a lounge, which for me was a disappointment.

It’s a shame really, as I have experienced this over and over again with restaurants in Jeddah. They seem to spend so much money on the decor, location, branding etc. However for a unapparent reason they tend to forget the one thing that makes or breaks a restaurant, the food.

I reached the table where my friends were waiting for me already, each with a shisha in her hand. Personally, I don’t like to eat heavy for Sahoor so I chose to order an over-priced Panini sandwich with what was mentioned as some kind of sauce, fries and a salad on the side, sounded perfect. The “meal” arrived in decent time but I was in shock from the ridiculous tiny portion as I found the sandwich to actually be three teeny tiny pieces with about 5 to 10 pieces of french-fries and what seemed like a barley visible single peace of celery as the “salad”.

At Glow, I appreciated the effort put into the decor, as well as the well-trained waiters who were friendly and professional at serving us. I hope they prove me wrong next time by presenting me with the cuisine that’s well worth spending every riyal in my wallet.

Red Sea Coast

Earth Day Dive Against Debris Saudi Arabia is one of the world’s most beautiful countries, however, the pollution that is increasing takes away from its beauty. It seems to spread out to all its beautiful places, from a silent desert, a brilliant mountain ridge, a calm wadi, an exciting downtown, to its wonderful Red Sea. When ever you get irresponsible enough to throw your waste of soft drinks or candy wraps on the floor or in the sea... trust that someone will follow in your footsteps and do the same. Saying ‘NO’ to littering isn’t enough, but instead “Actions speak louder than words.” The earth is and sea are connected to one another. Whatever waste is on dry land will travel it’s way to the sea, whether it’s on the surface near the ocean or in the desert lying on the sand. It will always find a way to reach the ocean and sink where you can no longer see it. We as a community can try to solve part of the problem by picking up garbage from the marine coast, yet that alone isn’t enough, we need to spread out the awareness to people, and we need to get people involved. 72 DESTINATION JEDDAH

The nearly 70 multinational volunteer of Desert Sea Divers affiliated diving professionals and recreation divers joined “The Earth Day Clean Up at North Obhur on May 25th 2012. They succeeded in collecting many fishing lines, mineral water bottles, soft drink cans, supermarket plastic bags, paper cups, thrown-away construction materials and so many more. The garbage waste does not evaporate, but instead it turns into small fragments that we can hardly see. Yet it remains harmful to the environment for many years to come. Collecting all of it is nearly impossible because a lot of it gets trapped between rocks or hidden in the bottom of the sea, which is too deep for us to pick up. What the volunteers and Desert Sea Divers did should inspire us all to get involved in keeping our environment clean. We should spread the word and get volunteers involved. We do appreciate all the help that was offered by the volunteers and hope for more in the future.

Dar AbulQasim Bookstore

By Dilara Hafiz

Saudi businessman Soliman Gasim started Dar Abul-Qasim Bookstore/ Publishing House in 1980. His intention to create a repository of books on Islam for non-Muslims in Jeddah quietly succeeded, yet it was in 2007 when the editors of Saheeh International joined forces with the bookstore that they began to produce material of their own. Amatullah J. Bantley, the in-house editor for the bookstore, had worked with Gasim for 16 years. She purchased the bookstore shortly thereafter in order to ensure the supply of Islamic literature and is currently the owner/executive director. Amatullah had joined forces in 1989 with author/translator Umm Muhammad (Aminah Assami) and editor Mary M. Kennedy to form Saheeh International. Initially established to edit Islamic literature in English submitted by authors to Dar Abul-Qasim Bookstore, the group soon began to produce material of its own as well. Their most notable work was published in 1997 – a translation of the Qur’an’s meanings titled The Qur’an: English Meanings and Notes. Numerous scholars now regard it as one of the most accurate Qur’an translations available. “We began work in 1994. There were two main objectives before us: to present meanings consistent with the ‘Aqeedah of Ahl Al-Sunnah wal-Jama‘ah and to simplify and clarify the language, keeping it as close as possible to the Arabic wording for the benefit of students,” said the three authors. “Although none of us have doctorate degrees in Islam (Islamic Studies), we are translating or referring to 76 DESTINATION JEDDAH

the works of renowned and trustworthy scholars - we are not offering our own opinions or rulings, but rather relying on the sound works by reliable scholars,” says Bantley. A bookstore with an impressive pedigree which continues to bring new titles to the market for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. KATHMANDU CALLING By Dilara Hafiz

I think I’m going to Katmandu, That’s really, really where I’m going to. If I ever get out of here, That’s what I’m gonna do. -Bob Seger 1975

Feel like a little adventure on your next holiday? If you’re bored by the five-star luxury of typical vacations, then consider visiting the capital of Nepal for some amazing scenery, cheap souvenirs, and authentic cuisine from its its neighbouring countries (India, Tibet, China). Kathmandu lies in a valley surrounded by towering, snow-capped mountains. At an elevation of 1,400 metres (4,600 ft.), it’s a cool retreat in summer and the first stop for trekkers of all abilities who are eager to explore the famed Himalayan mountain range. The popular 7-day trek to Everest Base Camp requires a 25-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla where trekkers can then hire a guide and porters to lead them through the Khumbu region. Rest houses along the way offer shelter and a needed acclimatization restoration as the high altitude can rob visitors of energy. Tourists to Kathmandu flock to the Thamel neighborhood. Accommodation in guesthouses and hotels ranges from $25$200/night, depending upon the level of quality and amenities. After settling upon a hotel, your first meal should include the popular local treat called ‘momo’ - a steamed or fried dumpling, which can be ordered vegetarian or stuffed with chicken or buffalo meat. It’s delicious when dipped in the spicy tomato chutney accompaniment. Authentic 78 DESTINATION JEDDAH

food is easily found in the many cafes and restaurants lining the streets of Thamel; some of the best finds are down the side alleys. Follow your nose to uncover the tempting Indian curries, Nepali stir-frys, and Chinese noodles. Fresh juices, the ubiquitous sodas, and local brews are all widely available. Visitors can spend days happily wandering this area, bargaining with vendors, sampling the food, and soaking up the sights and sounds of multi-cultural Kathmandu.

The winding streets of Thamel are populated with stores displaying their wares, which spill out onto the road (there are no pavements to speak of…pedestrians must be alert to passing motorcycles, cars, and bicyclerickshaws!) Pashmina shawls range in price depending upon quality – expect to pay from $10-$40 for soft shawls which easily cost triple in stores around the world. Tibetan and Nepali handicrafts such as beaded lapis lazuli necklaces, colorful masks, Tibetan mandala art, and woodcarvings all make tempting souvenirs. If you tire of shopping, then rent a motorcycle and explore the surrounding hill-country. The misty, winding roads and the lush vegetation transport you to a Shangri-La of harmony between the scenery and the calm of the hills. The overwhelming vibe in Kathmandu is one of relaxation and peace. The people are friendly, but not at all pushy when it comes to hawking their wares. Most people speak English or Hindi, but well-intentioned charades/gestures are usually sufficient to convey the meaning if language skills are not your forte. Nepal is predominantly a Hindu country with a sizable minority of Buddhists. The many temples which dot the city are fascinating sites to explore, while the Garden of Dreams is a former palace garden now open to the public which is a haven of greenery and tranquillity amid the bustling street-life. Kathmandu…off the traditional tourist path, but well worth the trip! DESTINATION JEDDAH 79

to School&Work: Your food guide fo r

By Fatimah Azam

optimum nutrition

As we step into our school and work lives back after a long vacation, it can be difficult to focus on optimum nutrition for yourself and your children while you still adjust to the regular routine after the festive season. DJ brings you the all the tips and nutrition information you need at your fingertips to help you have optimum nutrition ensuring that you work well throughout! and iron sources in order to help them reach their complete potential with a 1600-2,200 calories per day estimate.

PREFERRED FOOD-LIST:

Dairy products such as whole milk, cheese and yogurt, fruits (bananas, apples, berries, avocados, oranges and papaya), eggs, honey, chicken, turkey and vegetables such as tomatoes, broccoli, spinach. Lentils are also recommended.

DIET PATTERN FOR CHILDREN: BACK TO SCHOOL! OPTIMUM NUTRITION FOR CHILDREN: Children can be very active during the school days if given proper nutrition. As children are given lots of physical activities, they get tired and their eating habits are pretty much “mood-dependent”. During the school days, this “moody” eating behavior wouldn’t do much good for their learning habits. Therefore, children such as those in pre-schools and elementary schools should be given a diet rich in fruits and vegetables with plenty of protein, calcium 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Three average meals with two snacks boosts mental and body metabolism. Avoid chocolates, fatty foods such as fried chips, sweets and soft drinks. As much as possible try to stick to using whole foods for children and not low-fat foods. Brown rice, nuts and olives are highly recommended for optimum mental nutrition.

TIP:

Flavor foods with what your kids love. Try fruit yogurts, cereals with nuts (be it chocolate cereal even), date squares, milk shakes with fruits and nuts, your kids’ favorite fruit salad combo and much more! A mother’s creativity is endless!

DIET PATTERN FOR ADULTS:

An adult should be aware of the healthiest energy boosting foods in order to perform his best at work. Always have a banana and some Graham crackers with you. If you can have access to low-fat cheeses, better!

Breakfast BACK TO WORK, EH?

Yes, with an ultimate vacation, going back to work with a messed up routine is tough but if you are eating right, your routine can easily fall back into place without any extra effort. Typically, an adult needs 1200 (women)- 1700 (men) calories per day. Of course this depends on your work as well. If you are a heavy worker, 1800-2000 calorie intake is highly recommended. Females require more calcium and iron in their diets whilst men require more protein and iron as well.

Adults tend to skip breakfast and binge throughout the day.

This is unhealthy. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Never skip breakfast. It hinders mental and physical potential of an individual.

TIP:

Pay attention to your water intake. If you are dehydrated, you are very likely to feel tired quickly and a good diet won’t help either. Drink about 1.5 to 2 liters per day (more if you weigh above 80 kg.)

A breakfast high in fiber such as bran or wholewheat can keep many diseases such as heart ailments, stomach ulcers and even obesity at a distance. Time to grab some of those Weetabix boxes now!

Lunch

Lunch should be protein with vegetables. A sample lunch for a typical adult would include grilled chicken with broiled vegetables, tomato sauce and some Arabic bread (a small piece). It is highly recommended to avoid high carb foods like rice when working as it is more likely to slow you down and make you lethargic as well.

Snacks

One of the best energy boosting snacks is to combine yogurt and your favorite cereal. Viola! They taste awesome and you have your complete nutrition. Other energy boosters include bananas, nuts, almonds, walnuts, popcorn and try the hummus dips instead of high-calorie mayo or cream dips for those baked chips! DESTINATION JEDDAH 83

Need BRAIN foods so you can concentrate, improve memorization and focus? Try flaxseeds, mixed nuts and salmon to enrich your brain with what it needs to be extra productive. This goes for both kids and adults, alike.

Smoothie

If you are at home and are feeling low, try your favourite fruit smoothie (blend within minutes) and feel fresh again! Avoiding binge eating? Eat high-fiber foods like berries that help you last longer and crave lesser.

Adult Diet

An adult diet should include at least two snacks that would either consist of a fruit or a vegetable along with their three regular meals.

Lentil

Lentils are a great source. Try lentil soups or lentil gravy for your foods that leave you keep light and more efficient at work.

He has collected aromas from all over the world, wherever he travelled and what ever he found astonishing he added to his collection. From rare aromas that are hard to find to the scents he found dazing, he is simply an Oudh collector that does it out of passion for the Arabic scents. After years of collecting aromas he decided to open his own Oudh shop, which technically cost him nothing. This smart businessman took a small part of his house and transformed it into a small aroma store for people to share his joy in the variety of Oudh he has to offer. The aromas he has collected over the years became the stores main goods to sale in addition to his secret mixtures that he has created and gave a special name to each and every one of them. Durrat Al-Shaya’ has an amazing location in Al-Tahliah St. It’s a very outstanding store with a high-end design, very elegant and classy. The products Mr Al-Shaya’ offers are very unique and some of them are almost impossible to find. The combinations and blends he creates are one of a kind, very original and high on quality. In comparison to other “Oudh” stores his prices are considered very reasonable and affordable to everyone. Mr Al-Shaya’ hobby became a passion and this passion has transformed into a remarkable business. He has started his business with nothing but passion and became a dream come true to him. Keep your kids GERM FREE at School By Aisha Zamir

Believe it or not, it’s almost that time again – back to school. Shopping for back to school supplies and new clothes is important, but with cold and flu season approaching, don’t forget to take a few steps to keep your child as germ-free as possible this year. It’s important to work hard to try and teach your kids how important it is to have clean hands. Pack a kid-friendly hand sanitizer in your child’s backpack so they can keep their hands clean, even if there’s no soap and water available. Sure, you know how to fight germs at home, but you may feel powerless to help keep your kids germfree during school hours. While buying all the other back-to-school necessities, pack NO-GERMS instant hand sanitizer in their backpack. It’s simple and small enough to slip into a backpack and it can be a great way to help kids fight off illness-causing germs throughout the school year.

Avoiding all the bacteria, viruses and organisms that cause colds, stomach flu and other illness is impossible NO-GERM HAND Sanitizer:

Avoiding all the bacteria, viruses and organisms that cause colds, stomach flu, and other illnesses is impossible. Children, with their developing immune systems, are extra susceptible to passing bugs. The average preschooler suffers as many as 10 infections a year. Still, you can take steps to bolster your child’s resistance. By adopting regular use of NO GERMS hand sanitizers, it is guaranteed to kill 99.9% of germs and completely safe for children to use. Though it’s important for kids to wash their hands with warm, soapy water on a regular basis, hand sanitizer is also proven to be helpful. Kids should get in the habit of using it between projects at school or any time they have touched something questionable, but can’t get to the sink for proper hand washing. This hand sanitizer is an inexpensive, yet important gift that you could donate to your child’s school. 86 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Did you know that 80% of all disease causing illness is spread by the hand? • Free from alcohol and perfumes • Its effect lasts for 4 hours, whereas mist alcohol or ethanol gel sanitizers evaporate in less than 10-15 seconds, so they only kill up to a maximum of 62% of the germs on hands, thus increasing the risk to your child of disease transmission. • Alcohol sanitizers are also highly flammable, and they have a pungent smell, which can be attractive for children who may drink it. It is also highly toxic and is irritating if it enters the eye. NO-Germs takes necessary safety precautions in their products, making their products childfriendly. • Multiple uses of ethanol gel sanitizers can lead to dry hands and the appearance of acne and cracks, even if they contain moisturizers, therefore damaging your child’s skin. NO-GERMS hand sanitizer contains natural materials and organic moisturizers for the body which do not cause dryness. • A single use is equal to twice or more alcoholic gel. It also kills viruses while alcoholic gel does not.

In Jeddah the humid, stuffy, polluted, and sometimes unbearable air cannot be denied, pack. No-Germs FRESH AIR Sanitizer:

So if you’re worried when sending your children out to school where they are inhaling this extremely stuffy, polluted air, not to mention infectious diseases. NO-GERMS air sanitizer reduces the transmission of infectious diseases that we are breathing in. At DJ we love this product. We think it’s a perfect solution to remove odors with result in science labs, and classrooms. Just like the rest of the NO-GERM products it is free from any alcohol and fragrance, and it doesn’t leave any residue.

For older children NO-GERMS have also introduced a surface, and tool sanitizer. NO-GERM SURFACE Sanitizer:

Children can easily spray over dusty and pungent surfaces at school. It’s the perfect solution for a surface free of germs. It can easily be sprayed over pencil cases, toilet seats, doorknobs, devices, canteen areas, and lunch boxes. Just like the hand sanitizer it is free from alcohol and perfumes, it kills 99.9% of all germs and it doesn’t leave any sticky residue like other surface sanitizers.

Don’t Be Mean, Be Green...

By Rayan Khayat

Teaching kids about the environment, taking care of their surroundings come down to learning about cleanliness, consideration and the basic rules of right and wrong. Encouraging other adults in the kid’s life to lead an example as much as possible is also a good idea, so here are simple thing we as parents can guide them through to help have a better environment.

5. Take them to nice parks here and show them how sometimes they’re not well taken care of and that it’s all our job’s to do so. Show them how much better it is when the city is cleaner and greener.

1. Teach the kids how to plant trees and be comfortable with nature. This could be done perhaps while learning about photosynthesis or the anatomy of a plant at school. 2. Talking to children early on about energy resources will help understand issues better when they’re older and realize its importance.

3. Have them watch the beautifully filmed documentaries about natural habitats all around the world such as the now modern classic, Planet Earth and other titles like To The Arctic, Blue Planet, Human Planet.

6. It would be good to get used to ‘green’ habits at a young age, such as using both sides of the paper, finding uses for scraps of paper.

7. Cleaning up after themselves, not to

litter, learning that there are people who are unfortunate and have to live under less than favorable conditions.

4. Advice them to save water when they’re brushing their teeth and taking a shower. 90 DESTINATION JEDDAH

8. Make an example and not litter at school and believe they’re doing what’s right.
