Precious smile By Alanoud Abduljawad

SAID BY A TEENAGER From making mistakes to getting our college degrees, we know that she is always there. She held our hands through thin and thick, never left our side, no matter what. We sometimes might take advantage of her, or not appreciate her as much as we should. We maybe even forget her. But then as March approaches, we find what once were deserted flower and chocolate shops, are now bursting with activity. We all get her gifts that fill her heart with indescribable joy. She works so hard for our smile, whenever we smile it just brightens up her day. So why not make it the other way around? She deserves to feel appreciated every second of each day, not just in a specific month or on a specific date. Lets all start, step-by-step, hand-in-hand. Let’s fill her heart with joy, placing the biggest smile on her face, making her eyes tear with happiness by making her feel appreciated and thanked for everything she has done! Here’s a head start: Free flowers will be given out in Basateen Mall, on Tuesday October 16th. Come get your flower and place the most amazing smile on the most amazing person in your life…YOUR MOTHER!!

THOUGHTS TO P O N D E R

Should All Teachers Be Licensed?

Everyone remembers their favorite teacher. But unfortunately it’s the unqualified teacher who leaves the biggest mark on impressionable students. In most countries, it is mandatory for teachers to earn a teaching license or qualification in order to pursue a teaching career, however, in Jeddah many teachers are not required to have this additional qualification. Simply holding a graduate degree in a subject is sometimes considered adequate, to the detriment of their students.

In Dubai for example, teachers must have a valid teaching license or certificate; teachers must be certified or registered to teach in their home state, province, or region. To teach English in the UAE for example, you are required to hold an internationally recognized global TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate. The certification can be earned from Global TESOL

Colleges or the British Council, either on-site or off-site. TESOL courses are exclusively designed to train teachers with practical teaching methods; the completion of the course entitles graduates to teach English in any foreign location. A teacher’s license involves a training course, which educates the teacher on different ways of communicating the information, as well as dealing with students with learning disabilities. Some teachers in Jeddah are not qualified or experienced enough to handle students with special needs or to tailor coursework in order to enhance their learning. Although Jeddah’s teachers are unsung heroes who may have a wide knowledge of their subject, some have very little experience in effective communication or the latest teaching methodology, which allows their students to achieve success, therefore defies the main objective of their occupation.

Thumbs up to... Women Cashiers

In the past few months, Jeddah has witnessed a major change that makes women all over Saudi Arabia proud. Finally, both male and female employees at shops all over town are serving satisfied customers. Not only has hiring Saudi women helped raise the Saudization rate for companies, it has also provided a wider variety of jobs available to Saudi women. In addition, it gave women purchasers the comfortable choice of not having to deal with a male employee, especially when shopping for lingerie or beauty products.

Thumbs Down to... Parking Circus

If you live in Jeddah, then you must have noticed how much of a circus it is to simply drive a car. On the other hand, parking a car is a whole other issue! Drivers in Jeddah have little respect for other’s personal parking space. It has become normal to find several double-parked cars lining the roadside or coming across cars taking two spaces. It’s even a bigger tragedy that drivers have no consideration or respect for handicapped parking spaces. Worse yet, there is no strict punishment that deters them from doing so. 8

Grocery Shopping in Jeddah By Dilara Hafiz

Whether you’re a newcomer or a local, chances are that you spend AT LEAST a few hours every week in Jeddah’s grocery stores! From corner fruit and vegetable stores to the gleaming, modern superstores – there are all types of venues for foodies. Imported delicacies, locally grown organic produce, world-famous brands…it’s all available in Jeddah. So where do YOU shop for crusty French bread, top-quality steaks, or the freshest produce? Check out some of Jeddah’s top spots and write to us if we’ve missed out your favorite destination. Western-style grocery stores with a wide variety of staples and imported products can be your one-stop weekly shopping, but you may be trading freshness for familiarity. Granted the underground parking is tempting in the heat of the summer months, but it’s worth your time to venture out to your local stalls or even the fish market on occasion.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetables

When it comes to fruits and vegetables, Jeddah has no shortage all year round, season or no season, you can always find your favorite produce as it is imported from all over the world all year long. There are three sources of fruits and vegetables, one is the supermarkets where it is convenient, clean and you find almost everything you want, the other is the fruit and vegetable market (Halaga) which is located in the eastern side of the city, an open air assortment of stalls and vendors all hawking the freshest produce imaginable - the variety of produce is unlimited and the price is much cheaper than supermarkets. Your third option is your local corner fruit and vegetable store, they are in every neighborhood, their selection may be limited, but the quality is usually better than in supermarkets. 22 DESTINATION JEDDAH

TIP

Your local corner grocer may be of greater value than you realize, especially when you’re in the middle of preparing a meal and find that you’ve run out of an essential ingredient. Cultivate a friendly relationship with him and you’ll find that you may benefit from choice fruit and vegetables at a discount.

DESTINATION JEDDAH 23

Meat and Poultry

Supermarket meat is generally reliable - you should shop around depending on your preference as meat is available from a wide variety of countries. You might have seen butcher shops around town, don›t get intimidated as they are good and have daily fresh meat and poultry. Beside supermarkets, you can also find a variety of high-quality, imported meat such as steaks, ribs, and hot dogs at Tony G in Albadriah Center and at le boucherat in Abdulmagsood Khoja St.

TIP

Get to know the butcher as he is the one in control of what to give you. Say “Hi, exchange pleasantries, tip him and later you can get his phone number so that you can order in advance.

Fish and Seafood

Fish lovers should definitely plan a visit to the Jeddah Fish Market (Bangala) located in Al-Bagdadiyah Al-Gharbiyah. Get there early for the best catch of the day – fish, shrimp, crab, and lobster. Vendors will even clean and filet your selection for you, especially if you are a frequent customer. Most supermarkets have fresh fish section, they are convenient, but the price is a bit higher than the fish market. The Saudi Fish Company has branches all over Jeddah and they can be relied upon for the fresh catch of the day from the fish market, plus they also have stalls in most of the big supermarkets.

Bread and Bakeries

If you’re a bread lover, then Jeddah is your city as gourmet bakeries are popping up all over town, not to mention in some of the larger grocery stores. Manuel has a very good bakery. Refaat in Quraysh St is also renowned as one of the best Middle Eastern bakeries in Jeddah, and Danube as well has a large bakery with loads of varieties. If you are looking for fancier types of breads, then go to Paul, Voila, Delifrance and the French Corner as they have some of the best baguettes around as well as brioche, sourdough, and ciabatta. 24 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Our favorite Paul, their mouthwatering variety of breads and baked goods are irresistible

Organic Food

If you’re in search of organic food, most of the large grocery stores have dedicated fruit/ vegetable section of organic produce, but you may prefer to visit Abazeer for a larger selection of organic meat and produce. Manuel and Danube also have organic packaged food such as rice, sauce, canned vegetables, and grains etc.

NEWS !

Prepared and Frozen Food

Prepared meals on the go are widely available in most grocery stores. Sample their wares and get to know your favorites – you can’t go wrong with the freshly baked goods like manageesh, sandwiches, and the variety of baked sambosa. Quiches and baked treats are also high-quality quick meals. Try to select fresh over frozen wherever possible; if you must keep some frozen meals for an emergency, then you can choose from a variety of reliable brands – sample a few to narrow down your favorite. Some of the larger supermarkets have salad bars for a quick and healthy meal.

26 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Our all-time favorite Abazeer has opened a second location in Sultan St. next to Marble Slab.

Diet Food

After exploring Jeddah’s many restaurants and stores, you may find the need to temporarily watch your waistline – diet foods can be found in most of the larger supermarkets, however Danube has the biggest selection.

MesmerizingFarasan By Mohammed Mirza

Situated to the west of Jizan (700 km south of Jeddah) lies Saudi Arabia’s very own set of coral reef islands. The Farasan Islands are comprised of 84 islands and islets located in the Red Sea. With the goal of making the most of our holidays, we set out for Jizan by road - because nothing screams ‘adventure’ like a good old-fashioned road trip! If you like sightseeing, you’re in for a treat as the entire route to Farasan is a vast country highways mixed with breath taking desert landscapes. As you start to approach Jizan (about 600 km into the journey), you will feast your eyes on some of the most beautiful golden sand beaches this country has to offer. Adorned with gracefully swaying palm trees, this is surely a sight to remember. After reaching Jizan, you have the option of either choosing the ferry to reach the islands, which won’t cost you a penny, or to choose the felucca (local speed boat), which costs 50 SR. The advantage of choosing the ferry is that you can take your car along with you, but prior booking is a must due to space limitations. The ferry leaves twice daily from Jizan port to Farasan port, at 8AM and at 3PM. As soon as we reached the islands, we noticed the splendid colour of the sea surrounding the islands; it reminded me of one of those mysteriously beautiful islands we see in the movies - the kind you’d expect to see somewhere out in the Caribbean or the Pacific. We were very excited to see the beaches, so without any delay we hired a taxi to show us around the island. We got a great taxi driver whom we turned into our very own makeshift tour guide. He was quite knowledgeable and 32 DESTINATION JEDDAH

would occasionally throw in a fact or two about the town’s culture and history. The pristine, white sandy beaches along with the beautiful sea around them are a visual delight for onlookers. The beaches in Farasan are usually completely empty

due to the remoteness of the island; we had a considerable amount of privacy, and it was almost like our very own private island in the middle of nowhere. After the hustle and bustle of Jeddah, Jeddahwis will truly appreciate the pitch silence in a place like this. Sightseers will enjoy exploring the Bait Al Refai, which is an impressive piece of architecture unlike any in the region. There are numerous villages found on the islands, of them the most spectacular is the Qasar Village. Although uninhabited now, it stands as a testimony to the glorious past. Moreover the village is filled with sign posts that help in understanding what each structure’s purpose was, and the sign posts even mark the names of people who inhabited these houses in the past. After touring the whole island we were on schedule to catch the ferry back to Jizan, but unfortunately once we reached the seaport we heard that the ferry wouldn’t be leaving due to extreme windy conditions. Later on we decided to go back to Jizan on the felucca, but even they were not allowed to leave until they got the green light from the seaport authorities. So we were stuck on the island for one whole day and we ended up booking a hotel room for the night. Next morning, luckily it was not that windy so we rushed towards the port to catch the ferry for the return journey. The overall experience was amazing, an escape from Jeddah’s traffic and hectic social life. Visiting the Ottoman ruins, observing the village life, swimming in the sparkling clean waters of the Red Sea and luxuriating on the virgin beaches all added up to a fantastic, serene holiday getaway.

Civic and public efforts in the 1970’s/1980’s have brought art into the city, especially the outdoor art at our famous roundabouts, making the city one of the largest outdoor art galleries in the world. But that’s not all; art galleries in Jeddah are proudly showcasing local and regional artists who are making Jeddah a true ‘City of Art.’

Athr Gallery was established in

2009 in Jeddah. The gallery is known for contemporary art exhibitions. The gallery exhibits contemporary young artists who represent the range of Saudi artists. In the last few months, many exhibitions were held and 23 rising young artists took part in them. These exhibitions have shown the growth of Saudi Art and the imagination of the young generation. Jeddah’s Athr Gallery is a reflection of current Saudi Art expressed through different medias such as mixed media, photography, acrylic, ceramics, and batik. One of their latest hosted exhibitions was a photography exhibit titled “Arab Photography Now” by Saddek Wasil. Address: Tahliah St. (5th floor business center) Tel: +966-2-2845009 ex 302 Web: www.athrart.com

Al-Alamia Gallery is unique. The glass windows make the gallery accessible to everyone, offering tempting glimpses of the art treasures which lie within. On the 3rd of June, the gallery hosted a solo art exhibition by Saudi artist Fatimah Al-Nemer. “Stay” was an exhibition that highlighted the case of women’s conditions and femininity on canvas with temperamental colors and Arabian motifs. The Saudi Centre for Fine Arts was established 25 years ago.

It offers a variety of art courses (painting, drawing, photography) as well as hosting exhibitions. They recently hosted the 1st Contemporary Islamic Art Exhibition in Jeddah where 40 Saudi artists displayed 60 paintings of contemporary art filled with the religion of Islam. One of the last exhibitions was of a Saudi female artist named Kholood Al- Salem who presented 45 colorful oil paintings to the Jeddah art community. Darat Safeya Binzagr Gallery is an eccentric gallery, which

reflects the passion of her designs and her unique paintings. Its exterior echoes the great facades of Nabatean Mada’in Saleh. The place and the paintings highlight Binzagr’s desire to keep the Saudi roots in her work. The gallery holds her permanent exhibition and periodic visiting ones. One floor is reserved to those and the other ones to art courses, a library, and learning about art.

There, they met with Franco Cardinale, a successful Italian restaurateur, and were enamored by his energy for Italian cuisine. They delved into Italian food and fell in love with the idea of collaborating with Franco and opening a ‘true ristorante’ in Jeddah. The artists decided that the best way to bring in the wonderful food culture they experienced was to collaborate with real Italian chefs and culinary artists. In the end, the modern and elegant Tartufo came to be with the help of different Italian chefs specializing in pizzas and pastas, the different imported ingredients and desserts, and the rare lava heating stones.

Antoine Di Fazio is an award winning pizza maker and has participated in international pizza championships including the Pizza World Cup. In 2012, he was awarded as the champion of Italy for best pizza, the mediterranea. He is also certified to instruct from the European Union of Traditional Pizza. Di Fazio has brought his prized talents to Jeddah as one of the chefs at Tartufo. Salvatore De Riso is the man behind the fabulous sweets at the dessert bar. He is a world-renowned pastry chef with his own successful brands. Within a few years, he became one of the best known and most important pastry chefs in Italy. His wonderful ready-made creations are available at Tartufo for your tasting pleasure, including one of his best, the malfitano deliza al limone.

Tartufo also practices a cooking methodology that maximizes the taste and the nourishment of their meats with their lava heating stones. Retrieved from Etna volcano in Sicily, the stone’s function extracts the fat, enhances the flavor of meats and adds nutrients. The stone creates a unique experience and intellectual atmosphere for the diners. The mozzarella bar is another unique feature of this authentic Italian restaurant. Cheese lovers can casually visit the bar for a delicious cheese plate if they’re not looking for a big meal. The variety of cheeses has been uniquely selected from Italy and is on display at the bar to choose from.

Franco Cardinale, who helped bring in a

true Italian touch, is a proud owner of one of the most trendy and famous restaurants on the coastal town of Fondi. But his love for Saudi Arabia and its communities has brought him here to enthusiastically promote the food he’s so passionate about. So he has invested in Tartufo to enhance the Italian experience in Jeddah. Tartufo is the Italian restaurant where clients will be reacquainted with true Italian food.

The name Tartufo identifies the restaurant’s specialty, which is the truffle. The unique and pure Italian ingredients are imported all the way from Italy to deliver the best flavor there is and costumers can purchase their variety of cheese and olive oil.

The talented architect Tarek Al-Naamani created Tartufo’s atmosphere and design where costumers will also experience the cooking process and can watch their dishes being made right in front of them. They will also be introduced to Italian personalities first-hand and enjoy the generosity of their people - the way Italian food was meant to be enjoyed. VENCHI Goodness Conquers Jeddah Chocolate lovers in Jeddah have a new destination! Finally, the first Venchi chococreamery opened in KSA’s metropolis, at no other than the prestigious Red Sea Mall. One hundred square meters dedicated to the excellence of Venchi production, a firm that since 1878 transforms cocoa into an extraordinary experience, inspired by the Piedmont’s chocolatier tradition. In addition to Gianduja, this new store offers extra dark and sugar-free chocolates, and the delicious single wrapped pralines Venchi is famous for. Jeddah’s public can now taste the world-known artisanal Gelato, freshly made in the store every day, including 24 fabulous recipes from creams to granite to seduce all palates. In addition to being gluten-free, all their recipes are made in the name of highest genuineness and freshness, with absolutely no preservatives, colorings, artificial flavorings or hydrogenated fats. In collaboration with the University of Perugia, Venchi is undertaking a project aimed at defining the value of the cocoa seed (i.e. dark chocolate), in terms of health. It is undeniable that the cocoa seed is a food extremely rich in natural polyphenols, and if cultivated, treated and processed with biological systems that respect their nutritional qualities, the antioxidants inside the seed will be preserved at a higher level than they are in products of chocolate processed with standard technologies. In fact, it will no longer be considered a “gift article,” but will, to all effects, be a food source with clear health prerogatives. An example among many: the food

acknowledged to contain a high content of polyphenols is grapes. However, what most people do not know is that the cocoa seed contains almost six times as much. One definition of polyphenols, is “a family of about 5000 organic molecules widespread in the plant kingdom. They are characterized, as their name indicates, by the presence of large multiples of phenol structural units connected in more or less complex structures generally of high molecular weight. These compounds are the product of the secondary metabolism of plants.” They are found in nature and it has been proven that they have antioxidant properties; they can be useful to prevent oxidization and are known for their

positive effect on the cardiovascular system, in combating diseases related to aging, and minimizing tumor growth. For those reasons, polyphenols are considered very important for our health and wellbeing. How do we recognize good gelato from bad gelato? In addition to taste, we also take into consideration the healthiness and naturalness of a product. When buying bulk gelato, the first rule is to ask to read the ingredients, in order to understand the raw materials used. Venchi knows the ropes of gelato making tradition, and we take pride in the excellent quality of our productions. It is important to us that consumers are able to distinguish an excellent product from a poor one, so therefore we have decided to put the raw material utilized at the top of our list. We can proudly state that all our ingredients are natural in purity, without any sort of additives. For more than 130 years, Venchi has excelled in the quality, freshness, and uniqueness of their products. With craftsmanship and innovation, research and development, Venchi brings its mine of recipes up to date as market tastes evolve, never forgetting for one moment the values of tradition and quality. Freshness is guaranteed since we do not use hydrogenated fats or other preservatives. At each Cioccogelaterie Venchi, the ice cream is made daily using raw materials that are always fresh and delivered to the points of sale on a daily basis. Venchi products are available only in specialized shops that intend to add value to their assortment by using high-end products, and in order to achieve that target, the assistance of retailers specially trained on the products is essential, which explains why Venchi is not present in large distribution. A CHOCOHOLIC’S OPTIMUM GUIDE! By Yousra Elwi

What can be sweeter than indulging in luscious treats that can improve your blood circulation, stimulate brain functions, prevent cough, reduce risk of heart disease and most importantly, make you happy? No wonder so many movies, books and quotes were released to express heartfelt fondness of this little edible gem – CHOCOLATE! Fortunately for Jeddawis, chocolatiers have been popping up around the city offering different creations of this beloved confection (seems like they finally realized how much we actually need this legal mood-lifter around here!). We’ve compiled the A-list of Jeddah’s gourmet chocolate shops and spotted those distinctive things about each that takes it from a regular confectionary shop to a provider of pleasure-filled delicacies!

GODIVA

The newest chocolatier in town - Godiva since 1926; this long-awaited Belgium brand is exceptionally relished by the selective, tastesensitive chocolate lovers – those who literally take a moment to experience the exquisiteness of fine chocolate. The mastery of chocolate making is manifested most in the dark chocolate offering, and in this, Godiva is definitely a master of artistry! The texture, blend and sweetness are impeccably crafted to give you the ideal form of dark chocolate. With this refined expertise, Godiva offers two variations of dark chocolate: 50% dark and 72% dark; that is aside from the loose options on display that come with delectable fillings – the best being the dark caramel and dark Ganache ones. The dark chocolate truffles are also quite heavenly, with a sophisticated range of fillings like Cappuccino and French Vanilla.

58 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Godiva also offers fresh chocolate-dipped strawberries that are physically and emotionally pleasurable! So basically, if you’re seeking genuine ‘coverture’ chocolate indulgence, for yourself or someone you’re gifting, you know where to head.

VENCHI

A novel chocolatier in town – in terms of time and concept! Venchi – one of the few places with no French affiliations, in fact, it is originally Italian. Obviously, the Italian culinary excellence can never be questioned; that instinctive passion for food is always there. Surprisingly, Italy has some of the finest Chocolate makers in the world, and Venchi tastefully proves it. The quality, freshness and originality are all up to first-rate standards of confectionary, and clearly these are areas of no compromise for Venchi. The taste of cocoa butter is incredibly pungent that you may actually prefer to have the chocolates plain. Knowingly, Venchi created the Triple Layered pieces for the mere indulgence of pure chocolate – the triple layered dark just says it all! Crunchy nuts and soft pralines are the most flavoursome fillings at Venchi; they both add that rich flavour to the authentic chocolate taste. Besides, the sugar-free range is no less satisfying for those who prefer it – it is still pleasurable, but in a healthier sense!

CHOCOLAT

This is a chocolatier that truly puts selfindulgence before anything else! The mind-set of Chocolat is that a chocolate offering should be primarily consumed for personal rejoice and satisfaction and then other consumption habits can follow. With its French flair, Chocolat successfully creates this personal feel in its boutique. A premium selection of chocolates is loosely displayed, with a visible skew towards the dark options. Fusions and fillings are lusciously connoisseur, particularly the raspberry, mint and coconut ones – these are Chocolat’s finest pleasure-bites. This chocolatier treats each chocolate piece as if it comes with the instruction ‘handle with care’; and you clearly sense that this the expected conduct from you as well. A small assortment box of selectively beloved pieces is what you’re after at Chocolat; you can even pass by and pick up your custom-made bar of favourite chocolates to reward yourself with something truly precious. DESTINATION JEDDAH 59

VOILA

This place is like a mini-chocolate factory, with everything revolving around true passion for the mesmerizing cocoa-based treat! Voila’s presence in the scene comes with a complete concept rather than just a boutique or store. The main 2-floor outlet includes a chocolate display section, a hall for special chocolaty events (chocolate-making classes, theme birthdays, etc.) and a lounge. The chocoholic sentiment is clearly reflected in the extensively diverse range of chocolates, with more than 70 innovative creations; flavours include bitter orange, cardamom, dates, pineapple, mint and rose – to name a few. Moreover, for the finicky chocolate devourers out there, Voila labels the pure chocolate squares with the percentage of cocoa and country of origin; you’ll find pieces from Ivory Coast, Uganda, Mexico and Java along with other renowned exporters. So if believe that chocolate fantasies are infinite, Voila is the place to go and experiment some pretty wild assortments!

BON BON

Although more renowned as a patisserie, Bon Bon offers some of the best-quality chocolates in town. The texture experience of Bon Bon’s chocolates is absolutely sensational; you literally feel the smooth melting of the chocolate in your mouth. The French expertise is strongly evident in the ingredients selection – you just can’t miss that taste of finesse! The type and blend of Bon Bon’s milk chocolate is outstandingly splendid; even though this is the most common kind, Bon Bon gives it that extra pinch of sophistication. The chocolate ganachefilled rectangular bars are pure edible treasures – definitely their signature offering. The chocolate pralines are also quite exquisite, giving your taste buds just the right balance of sweetness. Bon Bon is a fantastic option for occasional chocolate gifts, as it remains exclusive, highend and not clichéd. The chocolate pieces are delectably rewarding, with nothing too unfamiliarly eccentric. 60 DESTINATION JEDDAH

THE EVOLUTION OF BURGERS IN JEDDAH

By Angelic Salha

“It requires a certain kind of mind to see beauty in a hamburger bun.” – Ray Kroc, creator of The McDonald’s franchise

One thing most of us Jeddahwis can agree on is our love for the old time favorite burger and fries. Ever since the burger was introduced to the world it has become most people’s choice. The name Hamburger originated from Hamburg, Germany, from which many people immigrated to the United States. The word “BURGER” describes different types of sandwiches that use ground beef. Burgers had a lot of phases in Saudi Arabia from fast-food chains to local joints and finally the high-end gourmet restaurants. 64 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Two decades ago fast-food franchises started booming in our country, it became children’s first choice and parents used to allow it as a treat on the weekends. Burgers were tasty and addictive, however not so healthy. Fast food burgers are usually produced in factories and frozen, and in some cases the beef is shipped from their home country depending on the franchise’s requirements. Some of the most popular ones according to our locals are McDonalds, Hardees, Burger King and many more. What made them special is their affordable prices which range between 12 – 15 SR, their constant flavors, the large variety to choose from, they can be found all around town and the best part is that most of them deliver. About a decade ago the word burger was connected to a famous local joint called Watani burger, which was low-priced, fulfilling and

BEST LOCAL GRILL

For the best local grills in Jeddah, we chose 19th Century Burger due to the fresh taste, quality and portion. We all love the taste of homemade food but we suggest you order before hand, long lines are always in this place.

DJKS PIC

BEST FAST FOOD

McDonald’s without a doubt, had to be at the top of our fast food list in Jeddah. It's quick, tasty, and simply McDonald's! As we know that most Jeddahwis absolutely love fast food, but this fast food joint is like no other!

also delicious. Burgers were made fresh and not frozen. The regular burger meal would range between 5 - 10 SR.

What made these joints stand out was that they were charbroiled burgers that you can find all over town such as Jan Burger since 1985, which became one of the most famous local joints in Jeddah and Sultan Burger since 2007 that became the new hip place for burgers because of its amazing fresh flavor, then 19th Century burger came in recently and took all these local restaurants to an entire new level. It added gourmet to the meaning of the local burger where you would see people lining up just to try it. The good thing about these places is their speedy services and the classic taste of burgers.

BEST GOURMET

For the best gourmet burgers in Jeddah, we chose The Counter Burger based on taste, quality ingredients, variety and nutrition value. If you love dining with friends and building our own burgers, then this is the place for you!

Nowadays the definition of Burgers has become a complex mission to decide on which concept of Burger you actually want. Instead of the old-time greasy burgers, people became interested in turning it around to high-end restaurants. Some of these high-end places like The Counter, Square Meater, Gourmet Burger Kitchen and many more gourmet burger joints has changed the original idea of the Burger meal and transformed it in to a rich tasty burger, with the best quality ingredients and variety of healthy choices. These restaurants have become the new hangout places for friends and families because of their amazing atmosphere, their professional services and their huge variety of food selections. The burgers are highly priced however each burger ranges between 45 – 60 SR. The humble burger… an everyday meal or a luxury splurge… take your pick! DESTINATION JEDDAH 65

Dining Around Town

The best part about ending our meals is the first bite of the icing on top of a cake or the addictive chocolate that melts in our mouth with each bite yet most of us don’t want the extra pounds. Here at DJ we found just the perfect place for you. Back in 2010 Boshra Ambari decided to start her own bakery of sweets at home; her love for sweets motivated her to bake unique desserts with no additives, no preservatives and no ready mixes. Her main concept is to start from scratch, which is healthy enough for her kids to eat. By 2011 she decided to expand and open a sweet bakery shop called Fab Sweets. Fab Sweets specializes in many sweets such as cakes, cupcakes, macaroons and wedding cakes. They perfected the flavors and the ingredients of macaroons to deliver the best in town. Fab Sweets has different flavors however every month they add three more to the menu, like dates, Sweet tahini “Halawa Taheniah” and Red velvet macaroons that became so popular to their costumers. They even have a Macaroon Café opening soon. Their wedding cakes are unique; the amazing cake designs are such a piece of art. They can actually imitate the edible fondant into any shape from lace; velvet to any type of material to give the feel of its authenticity. They can also provide matching cake stands so that the bride could have a perfect set. Some of their special luxuries is printing Victorian faces on the cakes and even creating different shapes to avoid the standard wedding cakes. Finally they provide wedding favorites, which are the wedding mini cakes. Location: Stars Avenue Mall, 2nd Floor. The Three Types of

HAJJ

By Angelic Salha

“And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass” (Surah al-Hajj 22:27) One of the five pillars of Islam is HAJJ, which is the pilgrimage to Makkah. In Islam there are three types of Hajj that can be performed, depending on where the pilgrim lives or whether he/she intends to make Umrah along with Hajj or whether he/she wants to offer an animal sacrifice or not. But keep in mind that it is a MUST to make the intention for your type of Hajj.

1. Hajj Tamattu (Umrah and Hajj separated):

*In the first type of Hajj, Umrah is done before Hajj anytime in Shawal (The 10th month in the Islamic Calendar), Thul-Qi’eda (The 11th month in the Islamic Calendar) or the first seven days of Thul-Hujja (The 12th month in the Islamic Calendar) with the intention of enjoying the Umrah until Hajj. You can remove the Ihram - (Ihram is the state of sacred purity the Muslim faithful must enter before conducting the hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca) - and practice life normally. *On the 8th of Thul-Hujja you should renew your Ihram with the intention of Hajj and go to Mina. Then on the 9th you go to Arafat/Muzdalifah. *On the 10th you return to Mina for Jamarat (Throwing the stones) then cut your hair and perform the animal sacrifice and finally remove the Ihram. Then you should perform Tawaf-Ifada and Sa’ay Al-Hajj. *On the 11th you spend it in Mina for Jamarat and also on the 12th you should perform the Jamarat then finally TawafWidaa. And that way your Hajj is complete.

2. Hajj Ifraad (Hajj alone without Umrah):

*In the second type of Hajj, on the 8th of Thul-Hujja you should intend Ihram for Hajj *On the 9th you go to Arafat/Muzdalifah. *On the 10th you return to Mina for Jamarat then cut your hair then remove your Ihram (No animal sacrifice is required) then you should perform Tawaf-Ifada and Sa’ay Al-Hajj. *On the 11th you spend it in Mina for Jamarat. *On the 12th you also perform the Jamarat then perform Tawaf-Widaa. And that way your Hajj is complete.

3. Hajj Qiran (Umrah with Hajj in one Ihram):

*In the third type of Hajj, Umrah is done before Hajj anytime in the 1st eight days of Thul-Hujja, with the intention of “Umrah joined with Hajj”. You should stay in Makkah with your Ihram until Hajj. *On the 9th you go to Arafat/Muzdalifah. *On the 10th you return to Mina for Jamarat then cut your hair and perform the animal sacrifice and finally remove the Ihram. Then you should perform Tawaf-Ifada only. *On the 11th you spend it in Mina for Jamarat. *On the 12th you also perform the Jamarat then perform Tawaf-Widaa. And that way your Hajj is complete.

The Holy Prophet’s Knowledge of the body By Angelic Salha

They say that sometimes in life it’s good to go back to the basics when it comes to life’s methods, and what’s better than our Prophet Mohammad’s (peace be upon him) methods in life. Most of us know that we should eat regularly, be healthy and exercise daily, but sometimes it’s good to know some tips that will not only keep us healthy, but that we could actually benefit from in our daily lives. Here at DJ we gathered some of the Prophet’s methods in eating and drinking that could add a lot of value to our health…

1. Drinking water in one gulp:

Anas Ibn Malik (May God bless his soul) said that the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) drank water in three breaths (i.e. in three gulps/sips) and used to say, “It is more pleasing and satisfying in this manner.” Explanation:

It has been proven that drinking water in one gulp could harm your body. Many harmful things could affect the body in drinking water in one breath; it could weaken the muscles and nerves, it is also damaging for the liver and stomach.

2. Sitting while drinking water:

Anas Ibn Malik (May God bless his soul) said that the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) did not drink water while standing. Narrated by Muslim. Explanation:

Drinking water while standing is not good for the health, however drinking water while sitting is better because of water filtration in the kidneys, if we drink water while standing it could cause kidney crystals disease and other kidney diseases as well. 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH

3. Combining hot and cold food (HEAVY AND LIGHT):

Abdullah bin Jaafar bin Abi Talib (God bless them) said: (I saw the Prophet, eat rutab (dates) with cucumbers) Narrated by Al-Tirmithi. Aisha (God bless her soul) said that the Prophet eats melons with rutab (dates) Narrated by Al-Tirmithi. Explanation:

It has been proven that combining some foods together can help stabilize their effects: like for example when you eat dates with cucumbers it helps your thirst because rutab (dates) can make you thirsty and cucumbers, which are full of water, can help satisfy your thirst. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) once said,

There are two kinds of knowledge: knowledge of religion and knowledge of the body.

The Calorie Count On Your Favorite Meals By Aisha Zamir

2500 calories a day for men

2000 calories a day for women (2,500 in third trimester of pregnancy)

1800 calories a day for children aged 5 - 10

These are the recommended number of calories you should be having on a daily basis, maybe a little bit more if you are extremely active. But, the inevitable fact is that food from popular places such as McDonalds, Burger King & Hardee’s may exceed your daily limits. Do you really know how many calories you are consuming by eating your favorite meals? In most cases Jeddahwis are consuming more calories than they need, especially fast food lovers. Here are some simple facts. Take a look for yourself...

Burger King The Triple Whopper (1,130 calories)

Makes a mere Quarter Pounder with Cheese seem like health food. At 1,130 calories, it packs more than twice the punch of the McDonald’s burger, which has 535 calories.

Anything with thick in the name can’t be good; this baby has 1420 calories. That makes “Monster burger” a pretty literal name, although “Abomination burger” might work even better. Two 1/3 pound beef patties, four strips of bacon, three cheese slices, and a couple of dollops of mayo: it’s a heart attack waiting to happen. They’re not even trying to pretend it’s healthy by adding a leaf of lettuce or something either, it just straight up says “I’m terrible for you, and yet so delicious, and we both know you have no willpower. Now buy me with some extra-large fries and a coke, tubby.”

Guilt free desserts! McDonald’s Ice Cream Cone McDonald’s has a few lighter dessert options on its menu these days. The Ice Cream Cone is a sweet, creamy soft served on a crispy cone. It has just the right amount of iciness without the sugary feeling of a custardy ice cream. You can get the amount of sweetness without the guilt. Calories: 270 Subway Chocolate Chip Cookie You might not have any calories to spare after pigging out on a double down, but those who always like a little dessert with their meal can opt for Subway’s lightest option, a Chocolate Chip Cookie. 1

Dark Spots on the face can be due to several causes. Most commonly they can be due to unprotected sun exposure, post inflammatory pigmentation such as after a bad Acne break out, or worsening of a condition called Melasma in predisposed women.

Solutions: I like to start my patients

on a bleaching cream that contains Hydroquinone. It comes in several formulations combined with other active ingredients examples are Glycolic Acid, Kojic Acid, and Ascorbic Acid such as ISIS Pharma Unitone 4 Advanced cream. I found that combining topical treatments at home with in clinic treatments such as microdermabrasion or chemical peels has given my patients satisfying results.

2

Most common causes of under eye bags are water retention, or seasonal allergies. Water retention can happen after an excessively salty meal the night before or even just as simple as the sleeping position, especially if you sleep on your abdomen.

Solution: For retention the best fix is

applying caffeine containing eye cream. Taking an oral antihistamine best treats seasonal allergies, but haemorrhoid gels (YES, haemorrhoid gels!) such as Preparation H when applied on those under eye bags can actually help reduce them quicker because of its decongesting effect.

3

Blemishes can get worse with the heat and humidity due to over production of the oil glands with this type of Jeddah weather.

Solution: Start using a mild Salicylic

acid containing cleanser. Depending on the type of Acne I see I would start the patient on prescription topical treatments choosing between Adapalene, Benzyl peroxide, or the topical antibiotics Clindamycin and Erythromycin. A favorite in-clinic treatment for quick blemished skin clearing is a Bio Peel Facial session containing seaweed extract.

4

Dull skin is usually the result of a lack of good skin care, bad diets that are deficient in essential nutrients, sun exposure, and environmental effects.

Solution: A good hydrating facial such

as a HydraFacial treatment session provides quick results. Home treatments, which I like to suggest to my patients, include incorporating Vitamin C containing serum, and a weekly mild micro-exfoliating deep cleanser to their usual skin care routine to give them the added boost.

5

Redness is usually seen in individuals that are prone to a condition called Rosacea which can be made worse by excessive caffeine drinks, spicy food, and sun and heat exposure.

Solution: I recommend using a calming cleansing water such as Sensibio H2O calming cleanser and a prescription gel containing Metronidazole that has to be prescribed by your dermatologist. Not to forget to avoid the triggering factors mentioned above.
