THOUGHTS TO

D PON

ER

You are more beautiful than the commercials lead you to think Dove’s global “Real Beauty” campaign takes the cake in creative advertisement with their short yet meaningful videos. This April Dove released “Real Beauty Sketches,” a video that went viral instantly. Gil Zamora, an FBI-trained forensic artist, wants to reveal to women that they are more beautiful than they think. Separated from them with a curtain, Gil asks women to describe their facial features in detail while he draws them. Then he asks a complete stranger who spent the day with these same women to describe them as well. The result is two sketches: the selfdescribed image is less attractive while the other is more accurate, and in some cases happier. The video ends with the message: “You are more beautiful than you think.”

Launched in 2004 after market research suggested that only four percent of women truly consider themselves beautiful, Dove’s global marketing campaign challenges traditional beauty commercials by aiming to completely redefine beauty. Dove embraces a more natural, un-airbrushed beauty and actually launched a video in 2006 that focused on the ridiculous amount of photo-shop that changes everything from the shape of a model’s eyes to the length of her neck. The ad ends with one radical line: “No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted.” Dove’s attempt to steer their promotional campaigns from the typical to the ethical cannot be left unappreciated as they promote their products alongside self-esteem. Now if only the entire beauty industry would follow suit.

Thumbs Up to...

Abdul Latif Jamil’s Act of Kindness

“No kind action ever stops with itself. One kind action leads to another...” –Amelia Earhart. Acts of kindness are never wasted. The world is still a good place filled with kind and generous people. When someone does good, another person will surely follow. As a charitable act within the whole month of May, Abdul Latif Jamil (ALJ) was furnishing mosques throughout all cities in the Kingdom. ALJ encourages people to call their office at +96614642233 to recommend any mosque in need of furnishing. Destination Jeddah applauds ALJ’s initiative and hopes the spirit of giving spreads.

Thumbs Down to...

The Communications and Information Technology Commission

For quite some time now, students and frequent travelers have been enjoying the free callreceiving service provided to customers by STC and other telephone service providers. Customers benefited by affordably enjoying their time abroad without having to worry about costs made to contact family and friends. However, since April 26, 2013, telephone service providers announced the termination of this service due to implementing the decisions made by the Communications and Information Technology Commission.

DR. AMAL SHEERA

26 DESTINATION JEDDAH

PROFILE:

WHO: HR Director Middle East at Schindler Group EDUCATION: King Abdulaziz University FAMILY: Married and blessed with four children You began your journey at a very young age. What factors from your childhood led you to where you are today? My family. Since I was a child, my father has always treated me like an adult. In fact, he even called me Dr. Amal all the time. When he had meetings or discussions he always included me and asked for my opinion. That sort of treatment gave me a strong sense of self-confidence and determination to make a change someday. When I got to university I majored in humanities and told my father, “I promise you I will become a doctor; whether it’s in medicine or the sciences or English literature, I will become a doctor.” When I got married at the age of 14, my husband supported me throughout my studies. His support and my family’s encouragement helped pave the road ahead of me.

I faced was men accepting me with them as an equal in the workplace. At one of my previous jobs, I was the first and only Saudi female to hold management position. Believe it or not, the fact that I am a woman was the reason I was completely disregarded by my colleagues. You worked in both the public and the private sector. Did you see any differences? The private and public sector differ in many ways. When I worked in the public sector, I didn’t feel challenged and work was slow. Unfortunately the public sector feels like Saudi’s comfort zone; a place in which you are guaranteed in terms of life long benefits regardless of your work and accomplishments. In addition, in accordance with the Kingdom’s Constitution, the public sector is meant to provide services for citizens, yet they fail to do so. The private sector, on the other hand, is a place in which employees give before receiving. Employees are challenged and given an opportunity to prove themselves and excel in order to get ahead.

Out of your major accomplishments, what are you most proud of? I was part of the team that initially developed a diploma Your experience is very impressive; you curriculum at King Abdulaziz University. climbed up the ladder and filled positions To know that this curriculum is now being such as lecturer, consultant and dove into implemented and taught to students today the banking business as well. Did you makes me feel proud and hopeful in regards have a goal then? Wherever I go, my goal to making positive changes within society. remains the same: to mark Saudi women’s I consider this university a mother, and this presence within our society. Saudi women should be recognized for their hard work and country my home; no matter how much I give to them, they still deserve more. When determination in spite of all the limitations I was recruiting young Saudi men to work and challenges they face. We aren’t able to with elevator and escalator maintenance, I drive and we’re still not treated as equals in was told that I would not find such men due most places within the Kingdom. However, to the stereotype that portrays Saudi men as I proudly state that there is a significant too “spoiled and pampered” for such a job. percentage of Saudi women working their way to top management positions in leading Determined to prove them wrong, I began companies, therefore proving themselves and my search, and as a result I am extremely proud to state that I had found at least 200 what they are capable of. Saudi young men certified and willing to work in elevator maintenance. I met some What difficulties or challenges did you face on your way up? but I met thousands of the men to be proud of. Above all though, I am mostly proud of my children and the inspiring people they have grown to become. How do you manage your time? I truly believe in the saying “If there’s a will there’s a way.” I had my first child when I was still in high school, and it was difficult to balance my time between my husband, my children and my studies. However, I was determined to achieve my goals and therefore made it happen. Just like housewives cook meals during the day, I cook but I cook here at the office. I cook for the better tomorrow of our young Saudis. Although the time I spend with my children is just during the evenings, it’s quality time and time surely well spent. What is your ultimate goal? My goal is to become the first Saudi female minister. Why? Simply because a person in that position is able to make a significant difference in the lives of Saudi citizens. Word of advice to young Saudis? Do not let anyone put you down. Be patient. Get involved. Make a difference.

On the surface, the long standing art community has been gaining momentum, the art scene in Saudi’s main cities have been improving with beautiful new art galleries promoting Middle Eastern artists. Workshops and new artistic programs are being offered and are widely available and there is a steady media interest to keep the whole thing moving forward. Film making and photography have been on the rise with great talents being discovered and going international, as well as a large number of Youtube shows that have gained enough views to rival most television programs, with Saudis contributing more than 90 million views every day. Underground, a street art movement is being created with a number of artists and underground bands gaining recognition, in addition to guerrilla art and street installations popping up discreetly in the cities. And in the middle of it all, an intrepid game industry is being born. Here is where the heroes of our story come in. Khawariz Games is a development team in charge of creating one of the most entertaining retro style pixel games catered with the Arabic community in mind. The company is the brainchild of Omar AlOmeir and Khalid AlHaider, two freelancers doing graphic design and application development. Their enterprise began with the development team’s titular game, The Amazing Adventures of Frees, and they’ve made a couple more games since then, with a marked style that sets them apart. Omar currently works as a developer, designer and artist while Khalid handles the PR, marketing and website. With a background in freelancing, they had always wanted to make games and fulfill their goal of

providing the huge video game market here with “SOMETHING LOCAL WITH

EXCELLENT QUALITY.”

The fascinating aspect of these two’s ambitious quest in developing this game is that neither of them have had any previous academic experience in game design whatsoever. When put in comparison to the quality of the games being produced, the raw talent is evident. In The Amazing Adventures of Frees, a character named, to no one’s surprise, Frees, goes on a series of adventures to track stolen items. Instead of using a generic character for the action platform game, Omar decided to base the main character on a friend of his, thus providing a richer basis for character formation and a fresh new outlook you definitely feel when playing the game. Furthermore, as you win each level you are congratulated with a mabrook (congratulations in Arabic), which I thought was a pretty awesome and amusing touch. The game itself has a lovely retro Mario vibe to it, with a brilliant music soundtrack provided by a talented Saudi musician, Essam Alghamdi, who goes by the moniker of Agent Whiskers.

To be honest, what I find most admirable is the fact that the whole game was made locally, with an Arab audience in mind. With entirely Saudi talents behind it, collaborations such as this is a mark of the beautiful change we’ll be seeing in the talented Saudi community, as graphic designers, programmers, artists, photographers and musicians got together to create art. Beyond that, Khawariz Games continues to amaze with their relentless dedication to originality with They Came from the Sea, an arcade style game, where you play a courageous boy who tries to protect recently found eggs from giant cockroach/bug type monsters. The game, a competition entry for Game Tako’s latest Game Zanga competition, themed Lost, has already been gaining recognition from a few international blogs. A Bird’s Love, a Newgrounds Ludum Dare 26 entry, is a slightly addicting minimalistic game with one level and simple gameplay and a very sweet theme to it. (Played it six times in a row, you say? Who, me? Never!) Speaking of Game Tako, there’s a whole bucket of impressive out there for this Arabic game hosting website that has managed to provide a local platform for Arabic games and a push for developers to create with their regionally held Pan 32 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Arabian GameJam, titled Game Zanga. Especially in view of the lack of support game developers face from national companies and media outlets, initiatives like this make a big difference. Truth be told, the region needs more people like Abdullah Hamed, the CEO of Game Tako, more creative powers like Omar AlOmeir and Khalid AlHaider, more original Arabic heroes we could play with like Frees, and most importantly, more support on a region-wide scale for artists in any sector. To put it in the words of Omar AlOmeir: “THE LOCAL INDUSTRY (IF YOU CAN CALL IT THAT) IS STILL IN ITS EARLY STAGES. VERY FEW PEOPLE ARE MAKING MONEY FROM MAKING GAMES, IF ANY. HOWEVER, THE FUTURE IS LOOKING PROMISING AND THE POOL OF TALENT IN THE REGION IS LOOKING EXCELLENT. I LOOK FORWARD TO COLLABORATING WITH MANY OF THE TALENTED PEOPLE IN THE MARKET TODAY.” In a huge video game market like Saudi Arabia, we’re in desperate need of video games made by Saudis, for Saudis; Arabic art made for Arabs. Here’s to more wonderful initiatives like Khawariz Games and The Amazing Adventures of Frees, and the continuation of a movement that’ll give us a happier more colorful future.

BREATHTAKING

ASH SHAFA VILLAGE By Mohammed Mirza

The mercury is steadily rising as summer is around the corner, so to escape the heat we decided to head towards one of the coldest places in Saudi Arabia, Ash Shafa Village. Situated high in the Sarawat Mountain Range over 2,200 meters above sea level, it is home to many of Taif’s agricultural products and boasts of breathtaking scenery. What makes a trip to Ash Shafa ideal is its proximity to Jeddah, located at just over 200 kilometers from Jeddah. To reach the village we decided to take the shortest and safest route which is through Taif. Once at Taif we were on Ash Shafa Road, which leads straight to the beautiful village of Ash Shafa. Driving on the long Ash Shafa Road is an incredible experience as it runs across precipitous ascents and descents while also providing a great view of the surrounding landscape. We saw herds of monkeys along the way just sitting by the roadside for their free meals. As many tourists who go past the herds stop for a while, they offer the monkeys food ranging from chips to juices. I have a cousin who resides in Taif and is pretty familiar with Ash Shafa, so he came along with us and helped us a lot in terms of exploring the place. First he took us to the highest point near Ash Shafa Village. Apparently when it is foggy, you can’t even see the person next to you. Luckily when we 34 DESTINATION JEDDAH

went there it was neither misty nor foggy, so we managed to get a great view of the stunning valleys, spectacular mountains and the scenic village of Ash Shafa. Then from the highest point, we headed back towards Ash Shafa and had tea at one of the local kiosks. Hot tea in cold weather along with a great view of the mountain range felt like it was the best tea experience we ever had. Later on in the day we went hiking across a flatter portion of the mountains. Hiking boots are a must, but unfortunately for us we were in our casual shoes and therefore had a difficult time hiking. Nevertheless it was still a fascinating experience as we enjoyed the constant gentle zephyr and it was the first time we went hiking.

While coming back from Ash Shafa we went for a horse ride. It was astonishingly thrilling as the whole path the horse took was around steep hilly portions of the mountains. It was specifically thrilling while coming downhill as I felt I might topple over the cliff. There are many farms close to Ash Shafa growing grapes, pomegranates and loads of other varieties of fruits. Some of the farmers are nice enough to allow you to visit their farms. Unfortunately, we were running late so we did not have time to visit them. Currently, there aren't many options in terms of decent accommodation at Ash Shafa and in order to get a decent hotel one has to head to Taif which is around 30 kilometers from Ash Shafa. Do not forget to check out the stalls selling fresh fruits on your way back to Jeddah, as they sell some of the best homegrown fruits at inexpensive prices compared to the city. Overall the trip was fantastic. We enjoyed the pleasant weather, the numerous picturesque valleys, the cool breeze, our first mountain hiking experience and the thrilling horse ride. It is ideal to visit in the summer season not only because of the great weather, but also because during other seasons it may be extremely foggy and therefore only suitable for experienced drivers to commute in such circumstances. In conclusion, if anyone is planning a visit to Taif, then a visit to Ash Shafa should definitely be on his/her itinerary.

YOUNG SAUDI ARTISTS Exhibition 2013

Since 2011, Athr Gallery has annually celebrated the youth’s contribution to KSA’s budding art scene by organizing the Young Saudi Artists Exhibition. These exhibitions aim to discover and expose young and brilliant Saudi talent under the age of 30 and encourage them to artistically explore many aspects of life by setting a theme in their contribution guidelines.

The third annual open call YSA exhibition was held on April 23 until May 23 under the theme of identity, limitations to freedom and change. Over a 100 applications were received out of which only 18 of the top artists were chosen to participate. The artists included: Abdullah Bogis, Dana Awartani, Nora AlIssa, Mohanna Tayeb, Nada Ashy, Noorah Kareem, Omama Al-Sadiq, Rami Al-Qthami, Rawa’a Bakhsh, Ghada Al-Rabea, Abdulaziz Al-Harbi, Ahmed Rubat, Ayman Zedani, Batool Al-Shomrani, Hind Al-Ghalayini, Huda Beydoun, Maha Khalawi, Heba Abed, Abdulaziz Al-Andanosi and Yasser Madani.

46 DESTINATION JEDDAH

The themes were explored in various unique ways. Huda Beydoun who had also participated in YSA I, presents “Tagged and Undocumented” which is a series of three digital photographic prints featuring illegal immigrants going about their everyday business but with Mickey Mouse heads. To highlight their uneasiness and fear of deportation Huda explains that, “Mickey Mouse is a character that everyone relates to, a figure of joy and happiness. He is on the other spectrum of how the undocumented immigrants felt while taking their pictures nervously and uncomfortably.” Several different mediums were used in the artworks including acrylics and ink to mind blowing installations and video art. Abdullah Bogis who used pencil and ink for his piece “We Are Puppets, We Are Tools” talks about his chosen medium, “Black and white are considered classic. Pencil is the alphabet of art and controlling a pencil is strength, it gives me confidence.” He further expresses that, “To 48 DESTINATION JEDDAH

have your work selected and hung in an art gallery like Athr is just wonderful, I believe that Athr helped me meet a new audience and has opened a new door for me.” Ghada Al Rabee used a most surprising medium to create her submitted piece candy wrappers on wood. Three pieces titled ‘My Lover, The Dowry and A Sip of Water’ each depict a man bequeathing an object to his partner- be it a cup of water, a rose or an apple. The medium chosen fits extremely well with the sweetness of the images while the artist explains that, “ We usually get attracted to candy because of its colorful sparkling wrapper. Although it is the first thing we throw. Are we practicing the same in real life? I try with this work to create something with a value out of the thrown away wrappers, as we should do with the neglected good values in our life.” All in all, the exhibition was as much a treat for the mind as for the eyes. The artists presented a unique array of striking pieces, each as thought provoking as the next.

The Middle East is flourishing with young designers in need of guidance and a platform to showcase their creativity and talent. Tashkeil is an establishment created to serve this purpose. “DESIGN ROAD IS ABOUT EXPERIENCE AND TRANSLATING YOUR IDEAS INTO OBJECTS.” – Samer Yamani, CEO of CDA The Creative Dialogue Association (CDA) is a non-profit organization that aims to raise awareness of design and promote international collaborations. CDA and Tashkeil joined forces and brought Design Road to Jeddah with the aim of creating a bond between creative entrepreneurs and top European designers. The Design Road Project, created in 2010 by artist and designer Samer Yamani, is a series of exhibitions aimed at introducing international leading designers to the Middle East in the form of workshops and lectures. In addition to Saudi Arabia, Design Road has made, and is still making its way to other countries in the GCC such as UAE, Bahrain and Qatar.

The workshops took place at Tashkeil’s Creative Space from May 5-7. Aspiring entrepreneurs were given the opportunity to take part in and learn from some of the top European professional designers. May 7 marked the end of the Design Road workshops. Group pictures were taken with participants, instructors, organizers and partners, after which the University of Business and Technology (UBT) gave out certificates. Just like Sofana Dahlan gave a warm welcoming speech in the Opening Ceremony, she gave a closing speech at the Closing Ceremony, ending it with a hopeful attitude regarding the Middle Eastern design scene.

“The interesting thing is that one simple thing, a little jacket with four pockets, you can play so much and create 120 different types,” Lagerfeld said. “It’s play time with an item that is timeless.” The exhibit celebrated Chanel’s iconic black tweed jacket, showcased 120 ways in which the jacket was reinterpreted in a series of blackand-white photographs taken by Karl Lagerfeld. The event took place on April 27, 2013 in Dubai at a beautiful black Chanel Tent. The guest list included celebrities such as Rita Ora and Gaspard Ulliet.

GIORDANO THE BRAND FOR EVERYONE

“Thanks to our partner Hani Abdul Aziz Saab and the team in Saudi Arabia, Giordano is one of the well-loved clothing brands in the Kingdom, and one of the key players in the apparel retail industry.” – Ishwar Chugani, Managing Director

Giordano is a brand that has marked its presence in all our lives. Within its 32 years of existence globally and 18 years in Saudi Arabia, the brand has developed and grown both locally and internationally under the leadership of Ishwar Chugani, Managing Director of Giordano Middle East (FZE) and Executive Director of Giordano International, and the Giordano team. Giordano is one of the world’s leading international retailers for men, women, children and accessories. Giordano stands out within the retail sector and is successful for a number of reasons. Their customer service staff consists of members who are experts in Giordano products, and they are always willing and happy to assist customers in regards to making outfit choices or purchases. Their success is based on five core values: Quality, Knowledge, Innovation, Service and Simplicity (Q.K.I.S.S.). A major part of their organizational beliefs is to provide their customers with essential and timeless fashion. Another key element to Giordano’s success is their loyalty program, World Without Strangers (WWS). WWS has attracted many of Giordano’s existing customers with approximately 227,308 members and an estimated 5,000 members joining per month. This number is significant because it highlights customer loyalty and trust. Members enjoy

“We encourage our staff to consider Giordano as their own business so they essentially work for themselves and not just a company.” – Ishwar Chugani, Managing Director

Giordano currently has 3,000 locations across 40 countries throughout Asia, Australia, Canada, Central America, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East. They plan to develop even further in the near future and explore untapped markets across the world beginning with Africa. P ROMOTION

10TIPS TRAVELING HIJABI

1. MAKE A CHECKLIST. This is essential for all travelers, whether you’re a hijabi or not. Write down everything you’ll be needing, from clothes to chargers and everything else in between. For maximum efficiency, cross off each item as it goes into the bag. The plus to this? Your newly made checklist will double as a log for packing on the way back. 2. TRY ON ALL YOUR OUTFITS BEFORE PACKING THEM. This way you can determine exactly what you’ll be needing to take with you and save on luggage space. If that pink hijab you thought you needed isn’t really going with any shirts, put it back! Also check for any tears on hijab clothes, chances are you take them out once a year and might’ve missed something. Helpful tip: take a photo of yourself with your mobile wearing the whole outfit. 3. MIND THE LAYERS. Layering is a hijabi girl’s blessing- and curse. All is la di da in winter, but come summer and that undershirt/shirtdress/leather jacket combo you thought was so cute is going to suffocate you. The lighter you go, the happier you’ll be (and the less your luggage fines are going to get). Careful you don’t go too light, though, and end up unknowingly walking around with a sheer shirt you thought was solid in the dim light. (find your best look and build on it). 58 DESTINATION JEDDAH

4. LIMIT YOUR SHOES. I know, I know. You really need the cork wedges and the sparkly heels and those super cute teal flats and the Rene Caovilla crystal sandals- positively need them! However, you’ll be needing every little space you get and chances are you won’t be wearing the 15 pairs of shoes you lugged with you anyway. Choose two pairs: your most comfortable shoes to wear to the airport (yay more space!), and one pair of classy flats (or sandals for a beach destination) for the days that need a fancier option of footwear. Or, if you need heels, get those instead. Think of all the shoes you can buy now that your suitcase isn’t bulging!

and a new outfit is born. Get a long enough cardigan and wear it alone for a comfortable airport outfit (with that men’s undershirt you just bought. I know. Ingenious.) 7. PUT YOUR HEADSCARVES IN A SMALLER SEPARATE BAG, should you be going on a road trip or a long summer holiday. This will keep them neatly folded and easily accessible. If you’re sharing hijabs with your mother or sister, it will help you keep track of what colors you have. 8. WEAR THOSE CARDIGANS with a pair of jeans for a casual outfit and hit the high brand shops feeling pretty in a light shade. You can even make use of cardigans on the occasional formal night about town. Dress it up with formal pants (white’s a great color) and a button up shirt for an elegant look (and an entry to that 3 Michelin star restaurant).

5. BUY AN INEXPENSIVE PACK OF MEN’S UNDERSHIRTS. Yes. You read that right the first time. The problem with hijab shirts is, generally they aren’t designed for a hijabi in mind, shirtdress and the like. Most are either sheer, or the necklines are a bit low and there’s nothing in the market designated 9. REMEMBER WHAT THE WHOLE POINT to be the perfect undershirt. Tank tops have OF HIJAB IS. Turban hijabs have been in annoying low torso lines, and high-necked lately, and while it is quite lovely people tend ladies vests have too short of a hemline to be to forgo their necks and cleavage for fashion any use. These however, have a high enough choices. Hijab is about modesty, so keep that neckline and low enough hems to be very in mind and simply throw on a scarf or wear versatile in situations you’ve run out of fresh a high neck sweater if you plan on turbaning undershirts, and they’re easy to pack and it out. cheap to boot. Want to offload something on the way back? Leave this in the hotel with a 10. ABOVE ALL, BE PROUD. It may get hot, clear conscience. the packing is a nightmare and the tan lines aren’t all that ideal, but it's a great feeling 6. MAKE CARDIGANS YOUR NEW BEST you get knowing you chose to live a modest FRIEND. Yes, I did warn about layering. life. Most importantly, don’t limit yourself! But cardigans are magical things when used Hijabs won’t stop you from having fun. correctly. Get one or two in lightweight cotton and solid colors (I find grey, beige, and black to be the most used, in that order), and one in a color you find yourself wearing a lot (ie. pink, blue, or my favorite, purple). Pair them with a maxi dress for arm coverage and voila! A great summer look! Want to change that tired dress shirt up? Throw it and your favorite necklace

At Shobak,

There’s a Pie for Everyone! The essential factor used to create every dish at Shobak is the essence of the restaurant, the shobak. Shobak is the wooden rolling pin used to flatten and shape the dough. Although the name of the place is eye-catching, that’s not the only thing that attracts people to this restaurant. The secret that brings you into Shobak like a magnet is the employees, their positive attitude and cheerfulness is not only contagious, but makes you feel like you’re right in the comfort of your own home.

64 DESTINATION JEDDAH

There are certain places you just know you will love from the moment you walk in, Shobak is a perfect example. It occupies a spacious corner towards the end of Tahlia Street after the Saudi Holland Bank. Once you are seated comfortably on the second floor, you will notice the whole street lies in front of you through the long glass windows surrounding you. Looking through the menu, you’ll have a hard time deciding on what type of pie to order due to the very wide variety of delicious toppings they offer, both sweet and savory. Otherwise you can simply ask your waiter to recommend certain toppings. The waiters are extremely friendly, helpful and most importantly, they’re approachable and they always have a smile on their faces. The saying “A smile goes a long way” is definitely applicable in this case! The dough is deliciously thin and feels light on the stomach and the toppings vary from the usual za’atar, cheese and labneh we all know and love, to the unusual toppings such as cauliflower, spinach, roast chicken and salmon. They have special pies such as the “Not a Cheeseburger Pie” which consists of beef burger with cheddar cheese and pickles, and it tastes even better than an actual cheeseburger! Another unusual special Shobak offers is the Mexican "Tostada" Pie which consists of cooked beans covered with lettuce, crispy tortilla crisps and ranch sauce. If you would rather go for a healthier pie, you have the option of having your pie with brown dough, low fat cheese and no sauce. Customers can even customize their own pie from choosing the dough, the toppings and the sauce. By doing so, you are guaranteed a perfectly delicious pie without any guilt. The best way to end a meal is by indulging in a heavenly sweet treat. Shobak offers absolutely delicious kunafah, halawa tahini and Nutella pies baked to perfection. The kunafah consists of pastry noodle shreds and honey sweetened cheese in its center. With time, this delightful sweet treat evolved and has been created using different fillings such as bananas or qishta (cream). However, the original recipe contains the sweet cheese within its center. For the past 30 years, Nabulsi Sweets has been providing their customers with the taste of the original kunafah, the way it was created centuries ago. Nabulsi Sweets is a family-oriented, customer driven establishment that has served authentic Arabian sweets for the past 30 years. Their recipes have been passed on from generation to generation. At all branches of Nabulsi Sweets, customers can find a variety of Arabic sweets that range from the original Nabulsi kunafah, crunchy baklawa with pistachios, ma’amoul filled with a generous amount of top quality dates in the center, and the all-time favorite deliciously sweet basboosa. In order to please and satisfy their customers, Nabulsi Sweets have developed their menu and included special services. They now offer creative sweets such as mabroomeh bel tamor which consists of bite-size little sticks of pastry noodle shreds and pistachios wrapped around a date filling, and kunafah filled with dates and qishta. During the upcoming month of Ramadan, Nabulsi Sweets will be providing their customers with a delivery service throughout the day even after Maghreb (Sunset) prayers. This service will relieve customers from having to go out and make last minute dessert purchases before breaking their fast. Nabulsi Sweets is otherwise known as the original kunafah shop and the home of the Nabulsi kunafah. Their name explains precisely what they represent: Nabulsi sweets. Dining Around Town

Delectable Freshness on a Stick Tarik Alwash searched the world for fresh and healthy ice creams but was hardly surprised when he failed and instead found that even the most popular ice creams were stored in freezers months after production. So, in 2009 Mr. Alwash gathered a team of professional chefs and nutritionists to help transform his dream of ‘ice cream that is produced and consumed daily’ into a reality.

Finally in 2010 after extensive research and experiments, the team invented over 50 nutritious yet delicious recipes inspired by the Italian Gelato and Freshi Ice-cream was born. In Jeddah, Freshi Ice Sticks factory was built and outlets started popping up around the city due to their success, as people grew more and more concerned about what they eat and how it affects their health. 76 DESTINATION JEDDAH

COLOMBO A POTPOURRI OF EXPERIENCES By Mohammed Mirza

The cobalt blue of the sea in the photo on my laptop matched exactly the one below us as our flight edged over the vast Indian Ocean. We flew past a meandering coastline stretching like a long white ribbon known as Adam’s Bridge towards the tropical paradise of Sri Lanka.

WE ARE HERE...

AFTER BOBBING IN AND OUT OF LARGE PUFFS OF CLOUDS, WE FINALLY TOUCHED DOWN AT BANDARANAIKE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

As we were waiting in a long immigration queue, we watched some of the most beautiful sights of Sri Lanka on the large LED display screens which made us even more eager to rush out of the airport and start exploring. After finally getting done with our immigration, we drove towards the energetic city of Colombo.

COLOMBO

THE COMMERCIAL CAPITAL OF SRI LANKA

Colombo is very popular with tourists. The newer parts of Colombo are typical to other metropolitan cities adorned with modern skyscrapers, while the older parts of the city still maintain the city’s rich identity. It is a nice blend of the two extremes surviving simultaneously in the bustling metropolis.

TUK TUK!

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC RIDE

After getting refreshed, we hired a tuk tuk to show us around the city. First up he took us towards the famed beaches of Colombo. They consisted of white sand, cobalt blue Arabian sea, warm water and beautiful palm trees. Hoards of exotic fruits and fish were being sold by vendors while kids were flying kites and families came together for picnics. The beach was pretty crowded, which made it even livelier.

GALLE ROAD...

SHOPPING AT GALLE ROAD

This road has some of the finest malls selling premium brands from around the world. The best dining options are also available on this road, and it is almost like an eatery is incomplete if they don’t serve seafood.

THE NATIONAL MUSEUM!

A MASSIVE COLONIAL LIKE BUILDING

What I found most interesting at the museum was an absolutely astonishing skeleton of a blue whale hanging on the ceiling in the

main hall. A few meters away from the museum is a Parthenon like monument known as the Independence Memorial Hall. Intricately designed lion statues surround the monument and are supposed to give the impression that they are guarding the monument from all sides. Inside the hall there are 25 sculptures each telling a story of Sri Lanka’s customs, traditions and history. It’s architecture is unique as it incorporates both Sri Lankan and Indian architectural styles.

THE FERRY!

LATER ON AT NIGHT WE WENT FOR A RIDE ON THE FERRY

It was absolutely fantastic. On one side we had the sparkling skyline of Colombo and the vast seemingly endless sea on the other. Guests even had an appealing dining option on the ferry which was equally pleasing.

KOTTU PARATHA, STRING HOPPERS, KIRIBATH, MALABARI PARATHA...

WE GORGED ON THE LOCAL FOOD

During our stay we indulged on local cuisine among which include kottu paratha, string hoppers, kiribath, malabari paratha and of course we slurped the authentic Ceylon tea whenever we got a chance. My personal favorite among all this was the malabari paratha, which is a layered flat bread with vegetable stuffing rolled up in a triangular shape. When we found spare time during our entire stay in Colombo, we would either head towards Galle Road, hit the beach or we would hire a tuk tuk and just roam around the city.

OVERALL

THE COLOMBO EXPERIENCE WAS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC

Amidst the commercial city we found bits and pieces of tropical bliss. Every moment was splendid, be it the exotic tropical fruits we ate throughout the journey, the smell of the aromatic Ceylon tea, the swim in the white sand beaches or the visits to the historical landmarks- truly unforgettable. The RIGHT STRATEGY

to Gaining Lean Muscles Minus Overtraining By Dr. Badr Alshibani

Have you been training hard and eating healthy, but still can’t seem to get the muscles and the perfect shape you desire? Don’t get frustrated! I was facing the same trouble when I first got into bodybuilding, but after understanding the basic principles of working out and learning the fundamentals of body types and muscle stimulus, I started to grow real muscles and never looked back. Follow the tips below and you too will discover the secrets to building strong and lean muscles without the risk of overtraining.

TIP # 1: LEARN THE BASIC WORKOUT PRINCIPLES BY HEART Whether you are training to gain muscles or to lose weight, it is crucial that you first go through the basics. Always keep in mind that resistance training is a gradual and progressive process. Firstly, spend about five minutes doing a warm-up exercise before jumping into your training routine. These preliminary warm-ups will get your blood flowing and raise your metabolic rate. In addition, do light stretching right after your warm-up exercise. Secondly, following your training routine, you have to spend at least five minutes doing low-intensity aerobic exercise to cool down and to keep your heart rate under 100 beats per minute. Also, you have to thoroughly stretch after your workout to increase your muscles’ flexibility and to avoid them from getting tight or tensed. 80 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Lastly, replenish your body with fast-acting carbohydrates like bananas or whey protein to help you build strong and lean muscles. Do this directly after your training or within 30 minutes of training. Also, get some rest and make sure to sleep at least eight hours a night. If you are training three times per week, rest a day between sessions. Keep in mind that the real growth and development of muscles occurs during rest and proper nutrition, not during the workout routine itself.

TIP # 2: IDENTIFY YOUR BODY TYPE Similar to a car engine, each body needs a corresponding type of fuel for it to run and function effectively. For instance, a gasoline engine runs on gasoline and a diesel engine runs on diesel. Knowing your body type will help you understand your system’s metabolism as well as the training methods and diet plans you need to fuel your body’s cells and to help build real muscles.

BELOW ARE THREE MALE BODY TYPES. WHICH AMONG THESE IS YOURS? • Ectomorphs are “hard gainers.” They are typically thin and skinny with small shoulders, a flat chest and a fast metabolism. Ectomorphs burn calories and fat fast, making cutting back lean muscle easy. If you’re an Ecto type of guy, you need to consume more calories in order to gain muscles, and your workout must also be short and intense. • Mesomorphs are “easy gainers.” They are natural athletes that possess hard bodies, large bone structures, and welldefined muscles. If you’re a mesomorph type of guy, you gain muscles and lose weight easily and also respond better to weight training. Unlike Ectomorphs, you gain fat more effortlessly so you need to watch your calorie intake carefully. A combination of weight training and cardio works best for you. • Endomorphs are “weight gainers” but a large portion of this weight is fat and not muscle. They are typically short and sturdy with thick arms and legs. If you’re an endomorph, you need to do more cardio and weight trainings to burn fat. Most endomorphs have a high protein diet so supplements are not needed.

TIP # 3: WATCH YOUR PROGRESS AND LEVEL UP Intense muscle and weight training should never be a one-day venture and neither should it be the same every day. For

x bodybuilding training to be successful, you have to develop an operative exercise plan and “strength training” strategy that matches your body type and triggers the increase in bone, muscle strength and density. The training program should involve changes in the number of repetitions, tempo, force, and exercises.

you are “Whether training to gain

muscles or to lose weight, it is crucial that you first go through the basics.

Thus, the secret to gaining muscle mass is to lift more weight today than you did yesterday or two weeks ago. Remember every lift you perform triggers your brain and sends neurological messages to your muscles to get bigger. If you’re lifting the same weight today as you did yesterday and two weeks ago, then you’re sending the wrong message to your muscles. Building lean and stronger muscles does not happen in just one snap of a finger. Rather it is a continuous and consistent process of hard work, discipline, intense workouts and equal amounts of recuperation. Also, getting the best results is always a product of one’s mental and physical input. Hence you need to be consistent, consume a decent amount of calories and proteins, train based on your body type and get loads of rest. For sure you’ll be on your way to losing fats and building stronger and leaner muscle mass. DESTINATION JEDDAH 81

SLEEPLESS

HOURS with

Dr. Abdulaziz Faruqui For quite some time now, people worldwide including Saudis have been known to stay up late and therefore get less than eight hours of sleep daily. With time, this unhealthy sleeping pattern became a lifestyle and unfortunately it has become the norm. In order to reveal the negative consequences caused by lack of sleep, Dr. Abdulaziz Faruqui risked his own wellbeing by conducing an experiment in which he stayed awake for 80 consecutive hours. Destination Jeddah had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Faruqui and hear all about his 80 sleepless hours. A high percentage of Saudis have adapted to a certain lifestyle that revolves around sleeping at a very late hour and waking up early, therefore getting their bodies accustomed to an unhealthy sleeping pattern. Unfortunately, the health risks and downsides caused by lack of sleep remain unknown to the general public; therefore, Dr. Faruqui decided to take action. We all read and hear stories about the consequences of unhealthy sleeping patterns. However, seeing documented medical facts based on first-hand experience has a greater effect on people and could 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH

hopefully create more awareness. With that goal in mind, Dr. Faruqui began his 80 sleepless hours experiment. The first day of the experiment was typically just like any other day. When Dr. Faruqui reached the evening of day two, he realized he began to lose the ability to walk and talk properly, and was also finding it difficult to remember activities of his day. Dr. Faruqui began to feel exhausted by day three, noting that his blood pressure, heart rate and sugar level were increasing with every passing day. Towards the evening of day three Dr. Faruqui began hallucinating and by day four he cried from tiredness. Although Dr. Faruqui refrained from taking pills to stay awake, he consumed plenty of coffee and energy drinks such as Redbull. He also managed to stay awake with the help of his friends, specifically Saleem

Homsi, who organized their schedules so that Dr. Faruqui isn’t left alone. Dr. Obai Al Bashir, a friend and colleague, assisted Dr. Faruqui greatly by showing him an effective 20-minute workout that gave him energy. The International Medical Center (IMC) monitored Dr. Faruqui’s health throughout his experiment and documented the consequences of lack of sleep. Dr. Faruqui concludes that he conducted this educational experiment with an aim to create awareness regarding the consequences of unhealthy sleeping patterns. He is an inspiring young man on a mission to make a difference by proactively addressing issues within our society. We wish him the best of luck and look forward to his future endeavors. DENTISTRY'S

GREEN future By Mohammed Mirza

Cleaner greener dental practices are constantly emerging allowing practitioners to adopt healthy and environmentally friendly methods to treat their patients. As a result, helping clinics reduce waste and pollution through new products and technologies. There are many ways to make dental practices more eco-friendly. One of those ways is from the choice of dental filling you use. Dental caries is the medical term for tooth decay or “cavity” which is a very common disorder. To treat a cavity your dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then "fill" that area on the tooth with a dental filling. Today, several dental filling materials are available, the most popular ones being silver fillings and white/tooth colored fillings. So which one is best for you, while also being environmental friendly?

Silver fillings

Most people recognize dental amalgams as ‘silver fillings.’ Dental amalgam is a mixture of mercury, silver and other metals. They are known for their durability, strength and low cost (SR 100-150); however, there are some disadvantages as well. They have poor esthetics, much of the concern over the safety of amalgams arises from the use of mercury (which is toxic). Small amounts of mercury vapor can be released during placement and removal of these fillings. Although this can have no direct adverse health effects, it contributes to mercury being released into the environment through improper waste handling and disposal practices

ATION JEDDAH 86 DESTINATION

Tooth colored or composite fillings

These are a cosmetically pleasing alternatives which are mercury-free and are bond to the tooth. Moreover lesser tooth structure needs to be removed compared with amalgam fillings to prepare the cavity for the filling. They are the best choice for cavities on the front teeth and also for medium sized cavities on the back teeth-for people who prefer that their fillings look more natural. Composite fillings are more expensive (SR 150-300), but most people find these natural-looking restorations well worth the additional cost. Deciding on which type of filling to choose is best made by the patient and dentist, who take into account the size and location of the cavity, cosmetic concerns and cost. Discuss with your dentist the choices available for dental fillings and he or she will help you decide which alternative is right for you. Dentists can reduce the environmental impact of dental mercury by using composite fillings and avoiding the use of amalgam wherever possible. Also, by using proper amalgam waste handling and disposal practices. By adopting “Green dentistry” we can reduce the environmental impact of dental practices and encompass a service model for dentistry that supports and maintains wellness, protecting planetary and community health.
