THOUGHTS TO
D PON The Weekend Shift
In the year 2007, there were discussions within Saudi Arabia regarding changing the weekend from Thursday-Friday to FridaySaturday in order to align with the GCC. However, the idea was dropped shortly after it was suggested. Six years later, in June 2013, the weekend change finally came into effect after King Abdullah issued a decree. Most people find it difficult to adjust to and accept change. For that reason, many were, and still are, not pleased with the new weekend. However, sooner or
ER
later everyone will realize that this long overdue change only brings positive results. To begin with, Saudi businesses and banks now have four working days per week, rather than three, that overlap with Western businesses therefore making it more convenient in terms of trading and communicating. This new weekend will also factually provide Saudi Arabia with more economic opportunities for growth. The only change families will have to get accustomed to is shifting their Thursday activities to Saturday!
Thumbs Up to... #HitHer (I Dare You)
With three out of ten women in Saudi Arabia facing abuse in their homes everyday, it was about time people took a stand to raise awareness. While in the past this has virtually been ignored, this year saw three anti-domestic abuse campaigns in the form of a print ad courtesy of the King Khalid Foundation, followed by a thought provoking TV advert and a social media campaign sponsored by Libra Productions. The campaigns raised awareness among the general public and served as a warning to abusers as well as a show of support to the victims. For more information and helplines visit: www.kkf.org.sa/nomoreabuse
Thumbs Down to... Taxis Need a Makeover!
We’ve ranted and raved about the lack of public transport and the inconvenience it causes daily, but it’s time to put a spotlight on the state of Jeddah’s existing modes of transport. To begin with, taxis here don’t use meters so the fare you pay depends on your ability to bargain! Most taxis are very run down, the seats are hardly ever spotless and let’s face it - it does NOT smell like flowers in there. As the only commute option available for many people, the taxis in Jeddah need a serious facelift!

Lets Celebrate Eid

EID PRAYER 360
By now you’ll have gotten used to the nocturnal feel of Ramadan with the city half asleep during the day and vibrating with energy at night until sunrise. But just when you thought you could get used to the nearly deserted roads in the day and at iftar time, it is Eid time and the whole city is buzzing with activity. People flock to restaurants for their first daylight meal in a month and families swarm the parks to celebrate this joyous occasion that marks a fresh start. Eid day actually starts with Eid prayer and to help you feel more at home, Destination breaks down the tradition and religious ritual of Eid prayer for newcomers and visitors alike. 22 DESTINATION JEDDAH
PREPARING FOR PRAYER Before the Eid prayer, Muslims will get ready and put on their best clothes, preferably new or including at least one new item. The men will spray on cologne or ittir that is an essential part of the Eid morning routine and the women will put on new abayas over their festive and colorful Eid outfits. On Eid Al-Fitr, before heading to the mosque, people will first distribute the obligatory charity called Zakat Al-Fitr, which is why the Eid Al-Fitr prayer starts later than the prayer for Eid Al-Adha, which is offered earlier so people can return home to sacrifice their animals. Also, before leaving for Eid Al-Fitr prayer, it is sunnah (the way of the Prophet PBUH) to eat some dates, while on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha he would not eat until he returned from prayer and had offered the sacrifice. THE PRAYER AND THE SERMON The Eid prayer consists of two rakahs (units) and no athaan (call to prayer). As neither the Eid prayer nor the sermon are obligatory, the sermon is delivered after the prayer and those who do not wish to stay to listen may leave. However, to offer Eid prayer is strongly recommended, as the Prophet (PBUH) never missed it. POST-EID PRAYER After the prayer and sermon, Muslims leave the mosque to return home or to visit family and friends to exchange Eid greetings or to offer their sacrifice on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha. While leaving the mosque, it is sunnah to take a different route than the one taken to reach it. This is in order to give more charity and to exchange Eid greetings with more people.
THE ESSENCE OF EID PRAYER All over the world on the morning of Eid, Muslims gather a while after fajr prayer to perform Eid prayer in congregation. Eid prayer is the heart of the joyous occasion of Eid, and Muslims get dressed up and head to the mosque or a large open ground praising Allah, exchanging Eid greetings and distributing sweets and dates.
THE SACRIFICE ON EID AL-ADHA Eid Al-Adha falls on the tenth of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah, marks the end of the major rituals of Hajj and is a commemoration of Allah’s mercy on the Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH). After the Eid prayer, Muslims will return home to sacrifice their animals in the name of Allah. The animals may be goats, cows, camels or sheep. Then the meat is distributed to the needy and to friends and family. This year, Eid Al-Adha will fall some time in October 2013. DESTINATION JEDDAH 23
GET INVOLVED! One way to get involved is to give charity on the day of Eid. Another way is to simply ask your Muslim friends and colleagues to involve you in their Eid celebrations. That way you’ll learn about their culture while they learn about yours. Besides, more is always merrier!

JEDDAH WHO’S WHO
DR. ESSAM HASHIM 26 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Why pediatrics? I’m the oldest of 12 siblings and my parents led busy lives, therefore I became a father figure to my siblings since I was young. I became a pediatrician because I love children and I realized that while I grew up taking care of my siblings. From your experience, what are the most common illnesses children face here? Viruses, colds, coughs, throat and ear infections. What’s the strangest case you ever treated? Decades ago, a couple came into my clinic with a three-week old baby. The baby was in a tough condition with bruises all over his little body. I noticed his mother had bruises on her face. The parents told me the baby fell on the floor, but when I checked the baby I had doubts. We took him to the hospital and found out the poor baby was a victim of abuse. The father physically abused his three-week old baby and when the mother tried defending her baby she got injured as well. The baby passed away shortly after from cerebral hemorrhage caused by physical abuse. The police got involved and the father served 15 years in jail. An emotional story, or an incident you will never forget? There was a baby I was very fond of and emotionally attached to because his parents are my friends and I’ve held their baby since he was a newborn. When the baby was just one year old, he got into a disturbing, life-altering accident. The baby was home with the babysitter while the parents were both out running errands. While the mom was out, she received a phone call from the baby sitter saying her baby wasn’t breathing. The mother quickly went home, called me, and we all met at the hospital. The
baby sitter was unintentionally feeding the baby something he did not want to eat, so he wasn’t swallowing it. The baby sitter was unaware of that so she kept feeding it to him till he choked. The mother was in time to save her baby’s life, but unfortunately it was not enough time to save him from permanent brain damage caused by lack of oxygen reaching the brain. You treated some patients since they were three days old, and today you are treating even their babies. How does that make you feel? It’s the most wonderful feeling! I feel so proud- like a proud father. It’s a beautiful feeling to see what they’ve become and what they have done with their lives. When I talk to them all I’m thinking with an inner smile is “well done.” When I look at them and see how accomplished they’ve become, I feel proud; like I had something to do with it. We heard that you may be retiring. Is this true? Retiring?! On Fridays I get depressed because I have nothing to do, and during the week I am doing what I enjoy. So no, I am not planning on retiring any time soon.
‘‘A
CHILD’S
INNOCENT SMILE IS WORTH ALL THE

‘‘
How long have you been in this field? I graduated in 1968, then moved to Miami and continued my studies at the University of Miami. After that some partners and I opened a clinic together and at the same time I began teaching pediatrics at the University of Miami. I moved to Jeddah and opened my clinic here in 1984.
DR. ESSAM HASHIM
Tips for mothers and mothers to-be? • Don’t force-feed babies. • Make sure the baby is comfortable, then you’ll be comfortable. • Let your children play freely as long as they’re not inflicting pain on anyone. • Organize your baby’s life to make sure he/she always sleeps and eats at certain times during the day. • I cannot stress the importance of breastfeeding! Choosing which school to enroll your children in is a big decision. You want to give them the best possible education, you want them to have a healthy and happy learning experience and moreover, you want to feel confident that you have all the information needed to make the correct decision. So, exactly how do you go about doing that?
KNOW WHAT YOU WANT IN A SCHOOL
Read on as we help equip you with everything you need to consider when looking for the right private school.
Afterwards, familiarize yourself with different teaching methods; traditional, Montessori, International- which of these suit your child and meets your values, beliefs and culture.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK
VISIT THE SCHOOL
Research all your school options thoroughly. Try to find out about the following: A. Academic curriculum B. Student and teaching staff diversity C. Environment, school's mission and vision D. Consider the school's location E. Facilities; survey the buildings, labs, play areas, etc. F. Tuition and miscellaneous fees
Don't just go there but allot enough time to go around, bring your child and see how they feel about the environment as well. Make an appointment and be armed with your checklist (refer to the School Checklist Column), and another list with all the questions you have. Don’t hesitate to inquire!
Early on, make sure you find out if the school is licensed and if they are fully accredited by a special association or academic council. It would also help to know how the school is managed; is it part of a larger educational group, a partnership or is it owned by a sole patron? You can also gather feedback from family or friends, however keep in mind that as much as word-of-mouth is helpful, it could be biased and circumstantial. Best thing to do is…
30 DESTINATION JEDDAH
For a start, ask yourself what would be the ideal learning environment based on your child's personality and characteristics? What is important to you and what do you think is fundamental for your child's education? Think about what you want from a school before you ask what a school has to offer.
We recommend that you remember to ask these important questions: • How much homework should your child expect to receive? What is the class size and teacher to student ratio? • Do they have after-school activities or extracurricular classes and are they included in the tuition? • Do they have a certified nurse? What are their bullying and disciplinary policies? • Do they have a PTA? • What are their testing and assessment standards? Does the school support children with special needs? • In the case of International schools: ask how strong is Arabic, Religion and Quran?
Before leaving, request for copies of newsletters, academic calendars and any important dates you should keep in mind, like application deadlines and age cut-off dates on top of the enrollment files and brochures they’ll give you. TRUST YOUR INSTINCT After your overall assessment, look at the big picture and don't sweat the small stuff; no school is perfect. If you're looking for perfection you'll end up feeling disappointed and worried. Rely on your personal judgment and parental instinct first and foremost, once you've chosen a school and enrolled your child, keep in touch to ensure they are delivering as promised and your child is adapting nicely.
L
SCHOO
LIST
CHECK
Ask Qs like a pro! Bring this list with you: Is there a sense of challenge, leadership and achievement at the shcool? Do the children and the teachers seem happy? Can you sense genuine warmth and respect between them? Is there a balanced and comprehensive curriculum? Does the school cater for children’s characteristics and individual differences? Is the school properly staffed? Is there a librarian, physical education instructor, art and computer teacher? How involved can a parent be in their child’s learning process? Are the school grounds neat and safe? Is playground equipment adequate and well-maintained? Are the washrooms clean and up to standard? Are the classrooms inviting? Are the students' works proudly displayed? Is there a sense of order and community? What qualifications do the teachers have? Does the school invest in staff training? DESTINATION JEDDAH 31

Jeddah Homeschooler’s Network (JHN) is a little gem based in Jeddah that provides support and fun socializing opportunities for homeschooling families. Board member Sahar Khan explained that Khalina Khalili founded JHN in June 2010. Khan states that homeschooling is gaining popularity in Jeddah, with over 100 families registering at any given time. Many people shy away from the idea of homeschooling as they don’t have appropriate information. JHN eases these anxieties by providing ample information and support for homeschooling parents. JHN also aims to provide opportunities for homeschooled children to share lesson-based activities and social events with one another. DISTANCE LEARNING Another post-graduate alternative a lot of locals and expats are looking into is pursuing a degree through distance learning. It’s an option taken for the convenience of self-paced learning and for some, the ability to mesh together practical or professional experience with formal educational material. Universities that offer the online learning programs in the Kingdom:
1. Arab Open University www.arabou.edu
2. King Abdulaziz University
One of the most important ways to get ready for preschool and minimize the waterworks is to ease your child into school life before it even starts. Here are a few ways to do that: 1. Talk to your child about school: about learning, playing and making friends. 2. Many schools open weeks before the first day; take your toddler to get comfortable with the classroom and teacher.
www.elearning.kau.edu.sa
3. Adjust their sleep routine to sleeping and waking up early.
www.imamu.edu.sa
4. Take your child to pick out his/her own school supplies and outfits.
www.seu.edu
5. Keep your tone upbeat and let your excitement rub off on your child.
3. Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University 4. Saudi Electronic Universiy 5. International institutions either in UK or the US
TUTORIAL SERVICES While most schools offer after-class tutorials and you can also find teachers who part-time, the search can be tedious if you want to do it at home. One of the places you can try is: www.myprivatetutor. sa.com. There’s a good list of educators with different subject specialties as well as those who can teach general studies.
6. Help your child lay out an outfit for the first day. 7. Don’t rush through the morning of the first day; allow ample time for talking, getting dressed and having a good breakfast together. 8. Once you’ve reached the classroom don’t stay for longer than necessary, say a cheerful goodbye and leave promptly. 9. Do NOT sneak out. 10. Do NOT turn around
if your child starts crying as you leave, teachers are trained to deal with this. DESTINATION JEDDAH 35

The ULTIMATE To-Climb List in KSA
Rock climbing is the perfect way to pass time during the vacation. It takes the better part of a day to complete, offers a challenge, and rewards you with a sense of accomplishment, not to mention the breathtaking views. Where to start then? Here is a list of some areas in the eastern province in which you can explore this sport. Coordinates: 22’‘13.839 N, 39”39.585 E
1 JABAL SHAYAM (SUGAR LOAF ROCK)
2 AL WADI AL MARWANI
Sugar Loaf is near Al Ta’if, a few kilometers south of Khawajat Road. The climb can be challenging but is achievable even by climbers with moderate experience. Nevertheless, practice caution since the sandstone pillar it is made of is crumbly and unpredictable.
Al Wadi Al Marwani is in the Makkah area. It is a remote canyon that can be reached through a track that goes by a very scenic part before following the stream through the valley. It is more suitable for bouldering, and is great for long bike rides and hiking.

3 TOWERS OF MA’ALAG AL HAMADI
The towers are in Al Ula, an area which has a lot to offer as it is full of monoliths and natural arches, not to mention the infamous Mada’in Saleh. If you plan to spend some time in the area, some hotels, a hospital and a museum can be found nearby.
Coordinates: 22’‘12.056 N, 39”28.947 E
4 JABAL AL QAMAR (MOON MOUNTAIN)
You can visit: www.climbksa.com for more information. You can also join the Facebook group “Saudi Mountaineering and Rock Climbing” in which you can ask questions and plan trips with other mountaineering enthusiasts.
Coordinates: 26’‘41.007 N, 37”54.479 E
6 WADI ABU OUD
Jabal Al Qamar is located in Asfan, around an hour’s drive Northeast of Jeddah. It has several moderate routes and rappel chains in place and is considered to be very safe. The mountain is marked with different formations including narrow passages and plain slopes. Even though it may seem high (around 150 meters), the effort is worth the mountaintop view.
5 LE CAILLOU QUI BIQUE (POINTED ROCK) Le Caillou Qui Bique is located near Al Shafa. It has many routes including at least one easy route and several bouldering ones. Before you embark on your trip, make sure you know which route you are planning on taking.
Located near Al Madinah, the area is not easy to reach. It is around five kilometers and five minutes away from the main road. The area is rich with archeological sites that feature ancient writings and drawings. You will also find Umm Al Daraj, a tomb site 2,000-3,000 years old. DESTINATION JEDDAH 37

About Jeddah By Lama Alem
Jeddah, the Bride of the Red Sea, is a city with a rich history that dates back to 2,500 years when the first fishermen settled in the area. Ever since then, different civilizations and powers ruled over the city, each adding to the city’s culture and history. To tell the story of Jeddah, many museums have been built that deal with the culture and history of Jeddah as a city specifically and the country as a whole. 1. AL-TAYIBAT CITY MUSEUM FOR INTERNATIONAL CIVILIZATION Al-Tayibat is known as one of the biggest museums in Jeddah; it consists of 300 rooms distributed over 12 buildings. The museum showcases a diverse collection of Islamic manuscripts, old coins, furniture, pottery, old oil paintings, tapestries and dioramas.
3. NASEEF HOUSE Naseef House, known as Bait Naseef, is probably the most renowned of Jeddah’s museums. It was built by Omar Afandi Naseef 150 years ago, and gained fame when King Abdul Aziz resided there. The house-turned-museum is also a cultural center where exhibitions and lectures by various historians take place. The tree in Bait Naseef was once the only tree in Jeddah, and is believed to be the oldest. 38 DESTINATION JEDDAH
2. DARAT SAFEYA BINZAGR Darat Safeya Binzagr acts as both a museum and arts center. It decorated with paintings and has a comprehensive art and cultural library with resources in both Arabic and English (and a library for children as well). The Darat also has a traditional majlis and displays a private collection of traditional furniture, clothes, jewelry, and mementos from different cultures.
4. ABDUL RAOUF KHALIL MUSEUM Abdul Raouf Khalil Museum displays its collection in three categories that reflect the different ages the city went through and the different civilizations that inhabited the area: The Saudi Heritage section, the Ottoman Empire section, and the European Development section. The museum boasts a large collection of items that belong to the Ottoman Turks and the fishermen who first settled in the region.
5. CASTLE OF CULTURAL ARTS MUSEUM IN JEDDAH The museum was established in 1980 and is owned by the esteemed Saudi musician Tarek Abdul Hakeem. The museum, which consists of two floors and a library, portrays the musical and general history of the country and is home to historical artifacts, traditional outfits, and a big collection of cassettes and records that belong to Abdul Hakeem.
6. MUNICIPALITY MUSEUM The Municipality Museum houses a collection of photographs of Jeddah over the years, paintings by Saudi artists, and has rooms decked out in the traditional Saudi style. The 200-years-old building is notable because the British Legation occupied it during World War I. -Note: Permits are required to visit the museum, but they can be easily arranged DESTINATION JEDDAH 39

DURAIBAH’S STORY WITH
MARWAN QUTUB
Marwan Qutub is a Saudi man who has marked his presence in the region when he founded 3Points, the first Saudi advertising agency, in 1998. He recently dove into the retail industry as well when he created Duraibah, which is a brand that revolves around designing and producing Islamic products. Destination had the opportunity to listen to the story of Duraibah from the founder himself, Marwan Qutub. How did you come up with the idea of designing souvenirs with Islamic spirit? It has been an old dream to revive this category. Whenever I visited Makkah, for decades I saw the same traditional souvenirs. The beauty of contemporary Islamic design is a rich field. I’ve always thought that if I am to buy a souvenir, I can’t find something that caters to the taste of a well-traveled Muslim who is exposed to modern brands and global trends. What were the challenges that you faced in this project? Striking the right design formula and matching it with the desired product quality. 48 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Can we say that Duraibah will provide an Islamic lifestyle alternative to the youth? Yes, for sure. Because Duraibah is inspired by faith and it aims to enrich the bond between Muslims and the Islamic culture. This is achieved through contemporary lifestyle products that young Muslims would enjoy in their daily lives with pride. Why did you name the store Duraibah? Duraibah got its name from one of the ancient doors of the Haram that led to Sowaikah, a main market in Makkah at the time. Today, as a contemporary Islamic design house that is born out of Makkah, Duraibah opens the door for lifestyle products that enrich the bond between Muslims and the Islamic culture.
The Kiswah - Facts -The kiswah is the black fabric covering the KA’ABA. -It is changed EVERY YEAR on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah. -Every year, when the new kiswah is placed, the old one is cut into small pieces and GIFTED to certain people. -The kiswah costs approximately 17 MILLION RIYALS.

Products are handmade by female artisans and a percentage of the profit is given back to their communities and invested in housing projects to help these women live better lives.
How is the turnout? And what were the common questions you had? Alhamdulillah, all people who have seen our products or visited Duraibah stores in Makkah were impressed. It is amazing to see them expressing their happiness and delight with the brand’s concept. The most common question we have got on our social media pages (FB, Instagram and Twitter) is about where people can buy Duraibah products from. Are we going to see Duraibah in other cities inside and outside the Kingdom? Yes and for our clients’ convenience, the good news is that our e-store was launched on the first of Ramadan and it offers Duraibah products to Muslims all over the world. Nutella Donuts from Pink Camel
Tucked away on two streets in Jeddah is a little shop. A shop that sells the best fattet hummus in town! The shop is called Albahir, and it has only two branches in Jeddah. One branch tucked away on Helmi Kutbi street and the other branch on Palestine street. Their fattet hummus is absolutely delicious, perfected with pieces of chickpeas, golden croutons, laban (yogurt), pine nuts and pomegranate sprinkled on top. Delightful!
The crafty hands that make the amazing macarons at Pink Camel have also been creating more delicious treats to be proud of. This includes these small and round, perfectly glazed, sugar topped, Nutella filled donuts! These little treats are so perfect you’ll never love any other type of donut! The dough is firm but soft and gives way to melted Nutella that blends so well with it. Although they’re smaller than usual donuts - they’re much more satisfying! TRADITIONALLY SPEAKING
The main event most Saudis look forward to on the first day of Eid Al Fitr, after Eid prayer (refer to page 22), is breakfast. While some people dress up in new clothes and go out to hotels and indulge in Eid breakfast buffets, others prefer to stay home, gather around the dining table with their loved ones and enjoy a typical traditional Eid breakfast. Debyaza is a very popular dish and is found on almost every breakfast table on the morning of Eid. It is made up of cooked dried fruit such as apricots, nuts, raisins and dates, and is eaten with shoraik bread.
An Eid traditional breakfast table usually includes some of the following dishes: boiled or scrambled eggs, debyaza, ful, falafel, kibda (cooked liver), ma’asoub and ta’teema.

Ma’asoub is an extremely delicious sweet combination of baked bananas, brown bread, geshta (cream) and honey.
You can find the best Harisa at Basaad in Bab makkah, Albalad; they serve their Harisa every morning right after Fajr prayer until 7:30 a.m. +966 2 6421759 +966 2 6436102
NOTE: The place is very humble and old, but its worth the experience.
Ta’teema usually takes up quite a bit of space at the dining table due to the variety of dishes it consists of. The delicious foods it consists of are harisa (paste-like cooked meat and wheat), lado, labaneya, halawa tahinia, halawa sha’ar, and different types of homemade jam, olives and pickles. It also includes a variety of cheese. There is always a basket of warm shuraik bread and fatoot (homemade type of flat bread) to go with these perfectly tasty treats. Although there are many breakfast options available, many families have the same breakfast meal on every single Eid morning and look forward to it. That’s how certain dishes such as the debyaza become a tradition. Apricots and You - Apricot seeds fight cancer. - Good source of vitamin C and A. - Excellent for digestion.

10 STEPS
Spirituality
TO GAIN TRANQUILITY IN PRAYER 1. Get in the mood: Repeat the words of athan to prepare your mind and body for prayer.
2. Pray on time and avoid delays.
3.View prayer as a blessing: God has granted you the ability and time to pray, so use prayer as an opportunity to thank Him.
4. If possible... Avoid praying in crowded and noisy rooms.
5. Keep away from distractions: Turn off or mute the TV, and keep your phone away.
6. Stand still: Before starting to pray, take a few moments to stand still and clear your mind, so you can dedicate your thoughts solely to prayer.
7. Eyes on the ground: Keep your gaze fixed on the spot of sujood.
9. Read different suras (verses) in your prayers: Don’t fall into a routine of the same one or two suras every time.
58 DESTINATION JEDDAH
8. Start with a supplication: The most commonly recited supplication is dua’a al-istiftaah (the opening supplication).
10. Make at least one dua’a for each sajda.
SIDESTEP Blues THE POST-RAMADAN
There is a unique sense of serenity and spirituality in the air during Ramadan that makes the acts of worship a breeze. It is a journey that teaches us a lot about life and about ourselves. However, soon after the month is over we fall back into our old habits. In order to maintain the Ramadan spirit, it is important to remember everything we learnt during the month. 1. It’s no secret that mosques are all packed during Ramadan. Make it a point to continue to pray on time and in congregation.
5. Give charity regularly; take out a fixed percentage of your salary every month and help the needy.
2. Remember that no matter how tired you were many times during the holy month you stayed up in worship all night. Motivate yourself to wake up at least 30 minutes before fajr to pray tahajjud.
6. Recite Quran everyday, just as you made it a point to do so during Ramadan.
3. Fast regularly even after Ramadan, especially on Mondays and Thursdays.
8. Remember to be compassionate.
4. Make up your missed fasts as soon as
possible in order to avoid delay.
7. Practice patience just as you did through your hunger everyday during Ramadan.
9. You can quit smoking because you stayed away from your cigarettes from dawn to dusk for a month. DESTINATION JEDDAH 59

KITE SURFING:
A New Way to Brave Jeddah Waves
By Lama Alem Pictures by Jeddah Kiteboarders
60 DESTINATION JEDDAH
THE SKILLS Jeddah is a city in a state of everlasting summer and people are constantly coming up with different ways to beat the heat, the latest being kitesurfing. Kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, is an extreme, surface water sport that combines wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, and gymnastics. Kitesurfers use large kites to navigate as they are propelled across the water on a kiteboard (which looks like a wakeboard or a small surfboard) with or without bindings or foot straps. With bigger kites, you can surf in lower winds, and with smaller kites you can sail in strong winds. There are different styles of kitesurfing, including: freestyle, freeride, downwinders, speed, course racing, wakestyle, jumping, and wave-riding.
Steering the Kite
To steer the kite, push forward with one hand while pulling back with the other—like your hands are exchanging punches. To dive the kite to the left, pull in with your left hand and push forward with your right. To steer right, do the opposite.
Diving the Kite
To stand still, keep the kite flying in the noon position. To pull yourself forward, dive the kite toward the water before pulling it back up to the sky. Fly the kite back up to the sky and dive it again to continually generate more speed. DESTINATION JEDDAH 61
If you’re a kitesurfer or interested in kitesurfing, you can join the Facebook group “Jeddah Kiteboarders” where you can ask questions and plan trips with other kitesurfers. Thomas, one of the admins of the group, says that when he first came to Jeddah in 2009, there was no kitesurfing community. He had to look in forums online to find fans of the sport, which is how he met his friend Christian, who showed him where the best kitesurfing spots are. Thomas started getting kitesurfing equipment from abroad and teaching beginners how to kitesurf, and has since created the Facebook group, uploaded videos on YouTube and joined forums to get more people interested in the sport. Currently, the kitesurfing community is very diverse and includes 30 members; when the weather is not suitable, the group would go on desert trips, go camping or meet in the city to keep in touch. A challenge the group

faced was dealing with the coast guard: they were stopped as the guard had never seen the sport before! But Jeddahwis have since gotten familiar with kitesurfing. The spots that the group frequents are Rabigh and a lagoon in Shaiba, but kitesurfing is still prohibited in the open sea and in many areas in Jeddah.
THE GEAR: 1 Kite: Cabrinha Crossbow IDS Kite sizes, measured in square meters, get progressively smaller for increasingly stronger winds.
2 Helmet: Mystic Razor
Only use helmets designed for watersports.
3 Board: North X-Ride
Until you really learn to drive the kite, a larger board makes it easier
4 Harness: Liquid Force Luxury 2.0
The harness takes the load from your arms and transfers it to your body, which becomes a counterbalance. Read more: How to Kite Surf – Kite Surfing Visit www.PopularMechanics.com DESTINATION JEDDAH 63

TIDBITS FROM THE TRAVEL

Bassma Al Toaimi Paris, France After driving for almost two hours on the mountains of Italy headed towards France, we shockingly reached a dead end. Then the GPS asked us to get into a ‘fairy?’ We drove onto this train cart that we saw and were in the dark for 20 minutes till we found ourselves on the Swiss side! It was an unexpected and memorable experience!
I was walking down a street in Paris, windowshopping while waiting for my sister. My eyes landed on a big juicy-looking cookie at Brioche Doree. I was at the cafe within seconds, ordering the cookie. It was one of the best cookies I've ever had!
I was recently on my honeymoon in Bali and my husband and I decided to enjoy a spa day at the Ayana Beach Resort, not knowing that the resort actually holds the #1 spa in the world! We decided to experience the massage on the rock, which was literally just that. Held on a hut on top of a rock, it was the most amazing spa experience of my life, with a mezmorizing sunset view.
Discovered something fabulous while traveling?

The Palio di Siena is a horse race held twice a year in Siena. Luckily, I was in the area and made sure to attend this once in a lifetime experience with over 70,000 other spectators at the Piazza del Campo. It's like a medieval festival complete with a paegent with fire throwers and fast-foot dancers, where ten horses and riders, bareback and dressed in appropriate colors, represent their city wards. The race itself took only about three minutes but is the most exhilarating experience.
I had the freshest sushi ever at Umai restaurant at the new Oberoi hotel, it was so good! The rest of their menu was really delicious as well.

HAMZA BEATING CANCER WITH A SMILE ISKANDAR By Rayan Khayat
Cancer is a heavy word; when we hear it, different images from movies pop into our heads and a feeling of dread overcomes us. That’s the misconception that Hamza Junaid Iskandar is trying to eradicate. Hamza was diagnosed with stage three cancer in November 2012 at the age of 21 and became, as he likes to call it, a cancer fighter and not a cancer patient – with a smile, no less. He shared his journey online and started an awareness campaign, and by March 2013 all of the cancer cells thankfully disappeared completly.
Hamza grew up in Jeddah, went to school and loved to play during recess especially since he was brought up in an active and sporty family. Unfortunately however, Hamza had a heart condition and three open heart surgeries by the age of 12. This worried his parents and chaperones, and he wasn’t always allowed to run out and play. At a certain age, he convinced his father to allow him to play football and that he would handle the consequences. This was the start of Hamza taking control and overcoming his physical illnesses and not giving into them. With his newfound outlook things were great for Hamza. When he was about to finish his degree in finance at CBA and was a budding actor in commercials, he suddenly wasn’t feeling well and he went to Houston, Texas for tests. He was diagnosed with an eight centimeter tumor that was divided between his esophagus and stomach. Depression and anxiety set in, and finally hope. Chemotherapy and radiation made matters even more difficult but faith gave him the strength to fight it.
The operations and treatment weren’t the only thing that helped Hamza beat cancer. His online awareness campaign ‘I Fight Cancer with a Smile’ put him in contact with many inspired supporters who shared their prayers. With Allah’s blessings, Hamza is now happy and healthy and his campaign is showing us that cancer is not the hopeless disease it’s perceived to be. TOP TIPS FOR A FIT AND FAB VACATION By Jill Calvert
Dear readers, I hope you had a pleasant Ramadan. Now that it’s over, many of you will be traveling. Holiday time is a time to relax and indulge a little but you can still maintain your fitness whilst traveling. I would like to share my top five tips to staying active and healthy during your holiday so that when you return, all your hard work is not wasted.
1
Ask Your Personal Trainer for Ideas
If you are a member of a gym you can ask one of the trainers or your own trainer for a program that you can do if there are no gym facilities at the hotel you will stay! You will be surprised how much you can do using simple everyday items such as a park bench, kids’ playground or a walking track, stairs and stools. The term ‘fitness anywhere’ is not just a saying; there are always ways to keep active.

2
Hotel Facilities
If you are staying in a hotel or hotel apartments, check if they have a gym that you can use. If it is a larger hotel they will normally have attendants that can help you with exercise selection. If not, you can ask your trainer as I mentioned previously. Check online for pictures; most hotels will post images of their facilities and services. If not, ring ahead of time to see what equipment they have or if they have trainers or classes you can attend.
3
Restaurant Advice
• On vacation you’re relaxed, and my advice is that you should indulge in the finer things and enjoy, but at the same time don’t over do it. The odd dessert or ice cream will not kill your efforts but daily ones may!
• A lot of resorts offer an all inclusive option where you can have food and drinks on tap all day. My suggestion is to avoid this if you can.
• Opt for bed and breakfast and enjoy a variety of restaurants. If you stay in an apartment you can buy local foods from their supermarkets and cook some meals. • Dine a la carte rather than buffet. You can often overindulge at buffets, while if you dine a la carte you have a say in your order. Source out healthy options and restaurants before you go and when you go. • There are a lot of websites that offer reviews on restaurants such as Tripadvisor.com
• Think ahead and be prepared before you go!
A great way to staying active and fit during your holiday is walking and cycling. If you are going to an area that has parks, a beach or local attractions that are a reasonable distance away, why not rent a bicycle or walk instead of using taxis. Believe it or not, a lot of my clients that travel tend to walk, swim and bike more and actually lose more weight than they do during their dayto-day living.
5 Download a Fitness Application
With modern technology and internet access everywhere it’s almost impossible to find a workout that you cannot do with little or no equipment. Here are some recommended applications that have great workouts: • Nike Training • Adidas miCoach • Fitness buddy • You are your own gym In conclusion, enjoy your vacation, move lots, think smart about nutrition and remember to enjoy yourself. Often a break from your program and a little indulgence is what you need to refocus and come back with more energy and motivation to get fitter and stronger. DESTINATION JEDDAH 69

Nurturing the love of
Nature By Rayan Khayat
It’s very difficult for us Jeddah urbanites to appreciate nature in a personal way growing up. Unless someone creates their own little oasis in their villa, it’s something we mostly experience when we leave our city. It would be great if the public parks weren’t constantly being littered in and there were expansive stretches of grass to play on. But we have to find other ways to appreciate Allah’s blessings. Here are some different ways we can help ourselves and our children appreciate the importance of our natural environment.
HOW NATURE DIRECTLY BENEFITS US: • Take the kids to the grocery store to look, feel and choose produce. • Teach kids, and instill in them the understanding of exporting and importing. What we grow, in Saudi, what we can’t and how we export foods. This will also help with understanding economics. • Teach kids about the atmosphere and air quality, pollution (from cars and factories) and how it affects our daily lives and health. LEARNING MORE ABOUT OUR WORLD: • Help children appreciate and understand desert nature and its landscape along with other types of natural landscapes found elsewhere. • Take advantage of any animal sightseeing. When all else is unavailable turn on Animal Planet- they show entertaining and educational programs. • Get involved in a proactive way when your child is studying biology.
74 DESTINATION JEDDAH
TAKING THE EXTRA STEP: • Grow some plants at home and let your children take care of them and learn what plants need to live. • Get a pet and let the kids take care of it and teach them the importance of taking care of other living beings. • Take your kids to horseback riding lessons and farms to interact with animals.
6
It’s difficult to take care of something when we don’t know how important it is and how it relates to us. At this point, the small tips and tricks can be found in our other issues, like how to not be wasteful and such. However, we wanted to reach out to the root of the problem (pun not intended!) and help build the appreciation of nature from the bottom up so it can be long-lasting, even after children grow up.
• Finally and most convincingly, obtaining the Quranic verses that call to appreciate nature, taking care of animals, not harming them and maintaining cleanliness.
Facts you DIDN'T KNOW about plants!
1. Eggshells contain nutrients that help plants bloom. Crush some eggshells and place them into the soil or pot. 2. Plants can die if you don’t give them enough room to grow, so make sure those pots are big enough! 3. Although water is a necessity for plants to grow, too much water can kill certain plants.
4. Flowers such as orchids are sensitive to chemicals found in tap water. They can only be watered with high quality water (i.e. distilled or spring water). 5. If you bury banana peels under rosebushes, the potassium in the banana peels will nourish the rosebush and help it grow. 6. Eggshells within the soil prevent slugs and other pests from killing plants. DESTINATION JEDDAH 75
