THOUGHTS TO
D PON Fashion For a Cause
At Destination, we are always blown away by the CSR initiatives of companies, especially in the fashion and beauty industry. Our latest nod of approval goes to Toms for their “One for One Movement.” For every pair of Toms shoes that you buy, one pair is given to a child in need. And for every pair of Toms glasses that you buy, Toms works to save the sight of one person through prescription glasses, sight-saving
ER
surgery or other medical treatment. For more information, visit www.toms.com/ our-movement. We love the idea of making shopping a less materialistic experience and adding another feel-good factor to retail-therapy. It’s almost like indirect charity. We look forward to seeing more popular brands prove how trendy giving can be.
Thumbs Up to...
Expansion Projects in Makkah
The total number of Muslims worldwide reaches two billion. At one point or another, all these Muslims head towards Makkah throughout the year for umrah and Hajj. Before the expansion, the Grand Mosque could hold up to one million worshippers. After the expansion projects are complete there will be enough space for more than two million worshippers! King Abdullah, as a dedication to the Islamic world, has initiated the expansion project that brings with it the opportunity for millions of Muslims to comfortably perform umrah and Hajj.
Thumbs Down to...
Construction Around the Ka’aba During Ramadan
At Destination we are very much pro-Makkah expansion projects, however, it would have been more convenient if the construction work had begun after Ramadan. Due to the construction surrounding the ka’aba, the number of Muslims going to Makkah to perform umrah during Ramadan decreased. If they began after Ramadan, phases of the project would have been completed before October (Hajj season). Umrah during Ramadan does not take the place of Hajj which is mandatory but it equals it in terms of reward.

Let the
JOB HUNT
BEGIN!
If you’re looking for a job in KSA, you’ve picked up the right issue of Destination! The job hunt generally has three main steps: searching, applying and following up. But before we get into the details, here are some facts that you need to know: 26 DESTINATION JEDDAH
FACT #1: Finding a job has never been an easy task, and it is no different in KSA. FACT #2: You have to work hard and stay persistent no matter how long it takes. FACT #3: With Destination’s guide to finding a job you’ll be settled in, in no time. FACT #4: Friends, relatives and acquaintances can get you places. In many companies, a good word is just as effective as a great CV. If you happen to be in the city and want to increase the odds, drop your CV off by hand. Remember to attach a cover letter and make an impression on the person you leave it with, even if it’s just the doorman!
PREPARATION:
Just like with all things, before you begin you will need the right tools. Start by updating your CV and portfolio if you need one. Remember to include all your work experience but only your best work samples. Research the companies that you’re interested in and find out everything you need to know about the company and more. This will help you adjust your CV as you emphasize on your most relevant experience and will also help you draw up a great cover letter.
SEARCHING AND APPLYING:
If you’re already employed, remember to check if your current company wants to transfer to KSA. Use websites like bayt. com and LinkedIn to find job openings and connect with companies. Follow these companies on all their social media pages to get to know them better. Once you’re sure that you would want to work for a certain company, email them your CV. Better yet, if you have a friend or an acquaintance working for a company that you’re interested in, have them drop in your CV and a good word while they are at it! DESTINATION JEDDAH 27
FOLLOWING UP:
Usually companies will specify in their job advertisements how soon you should expect to hear from them after applying so if they don’t reply within that timeframe, move on. If they haven’t specified a timeframe, give them a week and follow up with a phone call. Make sure your CV has been seen and considered and you’re in constant communication. Quite a few companies in KSA do not reply to emails.
Hint: These companies are probably very quiet on social media as well, so it would be best to call or visit them to make a lasting impression.
NEED TO KNOW • If you have the time while on holiday, apply for an internship or volunteer at a company you’re interested in. Make an impression and then apply for a full-time position. • Take some Arabic classes in order to enhance your CV. • If you’ll need a work visa and iqama (residence permit), check if the company will help you with it or if you’ll have to arrange it yourself. It is best and much easier for you if the company arranges and pays for your visa and iqama as they usually arrange for your family as well. Many companies prefer to hire from abroad so you have a good chance if you have a striking CV. Now that you have the right recipe, gather the ingredients: you will need a CV, a portfolio, a cover letter and lots of determination. Let the job hunt begin!

EYAD MASHAT 30 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Can you give us a brief history about yourself and Fad International?
Can you please tell us a bit about femi9 and Vivid Flair and how they stand out?
My grandfather, Sulaiman Mashat, built his business as a trader for accessories and tailors in designing and sewing dresses. My father, Abdullah Mashat, followed suit and expanded the business into lingerie, bridal dresses and evening dresses. I was raised in Makkah and lived with my father through his journey, accompanying him to the shop, traveling to fairs, visiting suppliers, attending negotiations and buying deals. I would say that this was the foundation for my business life before heading to Switzerland to pursue my MSc degree in M.I.S. I continued to accompany my father whenever possible on his trips during my university years. When I came back to Makkah after my studies, I took some time to contemplate over what I wanted to do and the career path I wanted to follow, only to find myself coming back to the retail fashion business.
Femi9 is the brand for every woman looking to express herself with her everyday attire – whenever she wants, wherever she wants. Vivid Flair London is the brand for the woman who wants to express herself beautifully in special occasions she hosts or attends.
When did you first develop an interest in the fashion and retail industries? Reflecting back to the travel days with my father, selecting the styles to buy and adopting those designs is where I saw myself. As such I found myself building the design team of Fad International in both Saudi Arabia and China and establishing the network of femi9 and Vivid Flair in London stores to provide the women around us with these especially designed unique styles. This is where I found the inner joy of appreciating the women in our lives with the clothing that best suits their taste and styles and allowing them to express themselves for who they really are.
“ YOU HAVE TO BE
PASSIONATE IN YOUR FIELD OF INTEREST.
FASHION IS A BIG WORD DON’T UNDERESTIMATE IT
“
– EYAD MASHAT
What do Femi9 and Vivid Flair bring to the fashion scene? Both brands bring out the personality and attitude of the woman and enable her to lead a playful and joyful life. How does it make you feel to be known in Jeddah as the “Retail King?” I do not see myself as the retail king. I am an entrepreneur making my way in life and enjoying it in every step, knowing that Fad International is paying back to the community by appreciating the women around us. Femi9 can currently be found in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, Syria and Switzerland. Any further expansions? I see femi9 as a regional player in MENA region, on its way to become an international brand. Will Vivid Flair expand further than London and the Middle East? The world is a green field for Vivid Flair London. London and the Middle East are only the beginning. Word of advice to young students interested in the fashion scene? You have to be passionate in your field of interest. Fashion is a big word- don’t underestimate it. It looks simple but it’s very sophisticated. As long as you are passionate about it, it will always be unique. Keep in mind that failure is the start of success. Never stop trying. DESTINATION JEDDAH 31

JUDE DESIGNS ABDULLAH AL-HASHANI, PROJECT MANAGER & JUDE FATANI, SENIOR DESIGNER
In 2010, Jude Fatani was in her last year of college as a Graphic Design student while her fiancé at that time was studying business. When Jude started taking up freelance projects, they decided to form a full-fledged company. Jude and Abdullah believe that “good companies should be represented well, and that the best way is to develop a unique brand that people will remember. Believe it or not, it can take as much as a fancy business card to convince your customers you’ve got a professional company, much like wearing a suit and tie to work.”
What are the pros and cons of working with your partner? Pros: There's a good level of trust, easy communication and understanding. Our working times are more flexible and we are working towards common goals. Cons: Can't give orders! And it can be difficult to make decisions.

How did you come up with the idea for Sweet and Savory? “We spent seven years traveling around the world and enjoying all sorts of exciting food, especially looking for the best in baked goods. Inspired by our journeys, we wondered if we had the gift for baking ourselves and decided to try our hand at it. Much to our surprise we created some truly delectable treats which the whole family loved and devoured. We started baking for friends and experienced a boom in our orders as word of our ‘edible artwork’ spread. The demand was much greater than

we could supply so we decided to purchase a larger oven for our home-based catering business, yet the orders kept flooding in. So one night we agreed that it was time to expand further and open a bakery. We became the first bakery in Saudi Arabia to offer savory cupcakes for people who love baked goods but prefer the savory sensation to the sweet."

SIGNATURES PRINTING HOUSE MOHAMMAD TAYLOR, FINANCE AND MARKETING & DEEMA SAHAB, OPERATIONS MANAGER
When and how did you come up with the idea to open a printing house? Deema had some friends studying graphic and interior design in one of the colleges here who were always complaining about the lack of decent places to have their work printed. So she thought of opening a place in a neighborhood close by where they would feel comfortable hanging out, finalizing their designs and then having them printed. So in May 2012, Signatures Printing House was created.
What are the pros and cons of working with your partner? Pros: We get to spend more time together and we're discovering new things about each other and collaborating. What are the pros and cons of working with your spouse? Most importantly, it strengthens your bond as partners. The partnership is now more than a business partnership and more than a marriage partnership, it is both! Since we are tightly involved in each other’s business, we grow more aware of each other’s troubles and worries. With time, we also developed better communication and closer visions and aspirations in life. Spending too much time around each other may be a vice for some, but it seems to work for us! ALIA SALMAN Alia Salman is a 17-year-old high school student residing in Riyadh. She is a highly talented young lady with so much potential to unleash on canvas. Alia is the example of a natural artist at heart. Amazed by her artwork, Destination caught up with her and listened to her story.
“THERE ARE NO LIMITS IN ART – THE CRAZIER THE BETTER!” - Alia Salman
38 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Alia’s interest in art was sparked at school at the young age of six. Her teacher would give them a few minutes in class to draw or paint anything from their imagination. The art teachers at Alia’s school never approved of her drawings as they were “too outrageous.” However, Alia set their opinion aside as she was learning on her own that you could turn random ideas into something beautiful. Learning that fact about art captured her attention instantly.
One day she was watching The Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton with her family, and couldn’t help but notice the mad faces of the characters. They were all different yet somehow similar. Alia noticed Burton's very unique, beautiful and unusual style. The mark he had on every single one of his characters was Alia’s main source of inspiration, since she has always wanted to have a mark or style in her own artwork. Every one of Alia’s paintings has a story to tell. As soon as she picks up the paintbrush she’s inspired and begins to paint based on random thoughts and things she picked up during the day. For example, one day she was following her sisters around the house, sketching their movements. When she picked up her paintbrush, based on the movement sketches Alia painted one of her favorite art pieces. Great artwork can be created using the simplest thought or based on a minor incident. For that reason, Alia’s sketchbook is always somewhere around her! Alia’s three favorite artists are Tim Burton, Dylan Izaac and Salvador Dali. Their work inspired her to create many of her art pieces in addition to realizing the importance of maintaining a certain style yet developing and growing simultaneously. Alia is an accomplished artist. To her, art is currently a hobby while studying remains to be her top priority. However, she does try to manage and organize time to do both. Alia sees art as a major part of her future. In addition to meeting many of the great artists she was inspired by, Alia hopes to open a gallery –whether it’s big or smalland display her artwork for people to enjoy.

Lillian Ismail,
A Gem Among Saudi Designers By Lama Alem
Named the youngest Saudi jewelry designer at age 18, Lillian Ismail has been gaining repute for her jewelry line, Banajir by Lillian Ismail. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am a freshman at Pratt Institute in New York, a proud graduate of Dar AlFikr School in Jeddah (2013). I grew up under the hands of a fashionable and artistic mother who helped me become the artist I am today.
How did your jewelry line, Banajir by Lillian Ismail, come to life? It all started as a high school graduation project at Dar AlFikr. After months of 40 DESTINATION JEDDAH
brainstorming, I decided to create a collection that would help in solving two major local problems. The first problem was that our society lacks Saudi female jewelry designers who compete internationally with worldrenowned brands. And secondly, our Saudi culture is not valued in society nowadays. Therefore, I thought of celebrating our culture through traditional jewelry pieces designed in a modern way that would make them part of our everyday life once again.
What inspires your designs?
When I started, I had to research and work on different kinds of collages regarding the Hijazi and Bedouin traditional jewelry pieces to get a vivid image of what they looked like. Afterwards, I chose several pieces as a source of inspiration and redesigned them giving them a modern twist.
What are your next steps?
As a student, for the four coming years I will be working on my bachelors in Fine Arts in jewelry design and metalsmithing. I am planning to do my masters in the GIA to learn more about the world of gemstones and gemology. Furthermore, living in New York is an advantage as I will get to work with some famous jewelry designers and brands.
Did you find the support and encouragement you needed?
Yes, I would specifically like to send my love and thanks to my parents and family for their support, and most importantly, Mr. Jamil Farsi, the dean of jewelers in Jeddah for advising me and producing my pieces. Instagram: lillianismailsjewelry DESTINATION JEDDAH 41

INSIDERS
THE MERCHANT
Jeddah’s fashion scene is definitely flourishing and not just in terms of what we can buy, but in terms of who is influencing what we wear. Designers, stylists, journalists and boutique-keepers are some of the rising stars of Jeddah’s fashion scene. So we’ve asked a stylish group of insiders who are in the business of fashion and are blazing with experience and passion on what their favorite looks are and what they think of Jeddah’s fashion scene.
Dana
Malhas
Co-Owner, Creative Director and Head Buyer of Cream Boutique
What inspires your style sensibility? Everything colorful, happy, feminine, comfortable and most importantly different. What are your style essentials? I can never have enough white tops or colorful shoes! Never. What are your favorite looks for the upcoming year? Cropped tops and high waisted skirts, tank tops and tutu skirts, and lots of print and color blocking. What are your style pet peeves? When outfits are too matchy-matchy and predictable. 42 DESTINATION JEDDAH
What are your favorite shops here? Cream is a multi-brand store that is known to be a trendsetter in Jeddah. We handpick every piece from around the world, we have the coolest and youngest designers, their collections are limited and exclusive and we have something new every two weeks. How do you define Jeddah’s fashion? Jeddah's fashion is picking up. We have most of the international high-end and low-end brands present, but it is definitely missing the mid-end, young, trendy, up-and-coming designers - which is what we are bringing at Cream boutique.
THE STYLIST
Hala
Al-Harithy
CertifiedFashionConsultantandStylist
What inspires your style sensibility? Every culture and surrounding inspires one's style. The ability to merge that while finding who you are individually creates great ground for personal style. I would say that many different cultures and their beauty inspire me. Most importantly tapping into the ever evolving "me" to express who I am through style. What are your style essentials? Comfort is essential to me. I only feel content if I’m comfortable in what I’m wearing. Of course I can't live with out my nude pumps as well as great jeans and a denim shirt. Let's not forget the perfect white t-shirt that goes with everything. A colorful bag is important to express personality, as well as a statement necklace. What are your favorite looks for the upcoming year? Floral print seems to be on the rise for the next seasons. Also my favorite color "cobalt blue" is being used in almost every brand. Print is always in for me and mixing and matching prints is my favorite look if you can pull it off. What are your style pet peeves? Being completely matchy-matchy! What are your favorite shops here? Rubayiat, it’s the best of the best in one location. Lillies boutique provides clothes for every occasion. Mahat concept store has the trendiest pieces and is always unique. Zara is my favorite for everyday clothing. Sid boutique for the hippest pieces. Cugini boutique and Dadu have the best accessories
in town. I love Hishma for its unique abayas and dresses. Jasmine box is eclectic and ethnic - I love it, and Cream always has special pieces. How do you define Jeddah’s fashion? How does great style here look? Are there any Jeddah vibes that inspire you? I would define it as ever-changing and colorful. Even the abayas have become as bright as ever. There is so much creativity and beauty in Jeddah and its people that it seeps out in everything they do, especially their style. The sea in J-Town makes you feel that its summer all year round here, and that inspires me to be colorful and trendy and try to live outside the traditional style ‘box.’ DESTINATION JEDDAH 43
THE ILLUSTRATOR
Alaa

Founder and Designer of Fyunka
What inspires your style sensibility? What inspires me the most is the diversity in how people dress. I love seeing new styles and what others have the confidence to pull off. I love walking down the streets of New York and just noticing how different people dress. What are your style essentials? White t-shirts, tops and blouses, a good pair of jeans and pearl earrings. What are your favorite looks for the upcoming year? I have to be honest, I’m very safe when it comes to certain looks and I don’t like to be too out there. It's been changing quite a bit since I moved to New York; there's more room to try different things here rather than Saudi where you truly are limited and don’t have room to experiment. These days I love that we’re exploring denim in different ways. What are your style pet peeves? Matching colors! I mean it’s okay if your nailpolish matches the bow on your shoes. But matching the lipstick to the belt to the earrings and the shoes and socks is such a pet peeve. What are your favorite shops in Jeddah? Why? I love Bimba and Lola and of course Zara is essential! You can also find awesome pieces at Maison Bo-M in Stars Avenue Mall. 44 DESTINATION JEDDAH
How do you define Jeddah’s fashion? How does great style here in Jeddah look to you? Are there any Jeddah vibes that inspire you? I think it’s amazing how people are starting to dress the way they want. We are seeing more local brands that are coming out and I love how people are more proud to say that it’s made in Jeddah.
THE JOURNALIST
Marriam
Mosalli
International Contributing Fashion Editor, Editor-in-Chief of Shoesanddrama.com and Founder of Niche Arabia, Saudi Arabia's Leading Luxury & Fashion Consultancy
What inspires your style sensibility? Oscar Wilde once said, “One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art.” I believe in that dogma. I don’t believe one can ever be overdressed. My everyday style is more classic chic with a hint of androgynous panache! What are your style essentials? A Dior sheath dress, Ferragamo kitten heels, and a statement accessory, such as a belt or necklace, have become my daily uniform unless I’m wearing an abaya, then it’s American Apparel tights and an Alexander Wang tank top. I always make sure though to pair my Saudi look with killer heels and an underrated designer bag— Phillip Lim, anyone? What are your favorite looks for the upcoming year? I’m really excited to see what Hedi Slimane of Saint Laurent Paris presents this fall. He disappointed me with last season’s grunge aesthetic but I’m still very curious to see what he comes up with next. What are your style pet peeves? I loathe anything overtly trendy. Fashion is about expressing your creativity, even if it’s subtle and boring- at least it’s your own! My advice regarding trends: borrow, steal, and manipulate! What are your favorite shops here? While I love multi-brand boutiques, I’m really a diehard Khayyat Center addict. Dior, 3640Shoes, Libra Boutique, The Shop (collection of designer vintage), Layla
Moussa Home & Wardrobe, Jade Jewelry, Top Shop and Mayass. How do you define Jeddah’s fashion? How does great style here look? Are there any Jeddah vibes that inspire you? While the country's capital has a preppy, formal aesthetic, Jeddah fashion is more laid back, with a bohemian, beach vibe and Jeddah girls are more experimental and unafraid to mix in DIY-recycled creations from the Balad. A girl with great style here in Jeddah has on a belted maxi dress layered with ethnic-inspired jewelry and a pair of sandals that screams effortless chic! I’m constantly taking inspiration from my city. Ikat prints that remind me of my father’s futas are one of my favorites, while my “shirt dresses” are really men’s thobes with an A-line cut and slit. I wear my ethnicity on my sleeve! My rings, bracelets, and necklaces are always quintessential Bedouin Chic! DESTINATION JEDDAH 45
THE SENSE OF HUMOR
Mariam
Yamani
Co-Founder/Creative Director of Useless Store
What inspires your style sensibility? I’m inspired by the bohemians who lead semi-nomadic, unconventional lives because they’re all about individuality, effortlessness, and vibrancy. The music I listen to, the books I read, and simple easy-going people make me feel and dress happily. What are your style essentials? Happiness brand graphic t-shirt, oversized sunglasses, and a pair of black high-heels. What are your favorite looks for the upcoming year? Pre-fall Philip Lim 2013 – I can’t wait to wear their oversized lousy sweaters, leopard pants, leather shorts, and the combination of sheer and sequined tops is perfection. I’m also into tribal maxi skirts this season. What are your style pet peeves? I would never wear white leggings or turbans. I also would never wear leggings as pants.
46 DESTINATION JEDDAH
What are your favorite shops here? My favorite shops in Jeddah are Newbury for easy-going comfy pieces, Cugini for Parisian clothing and accessories, 3640 for shoes and Chamelle Plaza for evening wear. How do you define Jeddah’s fashion? Are there any Jeddah vibes that inspire you? Jeddah’s fashion goes by the style mantra “dress to impress.” People always aim to overdress rather than dress for the occasion, which is not necessarily a bad thing of course. I am inspired by our seaside. Going to the beach is my get-away in Jeddah because it restores my energy and I usually come up with my best ideas there.

What inspires your style sensibility? The impalpable beauty of sound, the austerity of architecture, the frivolity and tragic drama of European and Peking opera, the long-lost glories and failures of history, and very important to mention as well Turkishpsychedelic-folk-disco. What are your style essentials? Tailoring. It’s so easy to have a newly purchased trouser perfectly fitted at the tailor's. What are your favorite looks for the upcoming year? For men: Zegna by Pilati SS14, Prada SS14, Matteo Molinari, Xander Zhou, Emiliano Rinaldi, Massimo Piombo, Tillmann Lauterbach. For women: Proenza Schouler, Prada, Céline, Jacquemus. What are your style pet peeves? High-heeled sneakers, patent leather bags, logos, faux croco and ill-fitting tight t-shirts. What are your favorite shops here? The Shop, for vintage hand-picked pieces, unique clothing and accessories that no one else will have. Sid, for an in-depth selection with an interesting variety that caters to those who are style-conscious with a certain eye. How do you define Jeddah’s fashion? The formation of a pearl begins when a foreign substance slips into the oyster, it closes and the mantle covers the irritant with layers of its nacre. This eventually forms a pearl.
What inspires your style sensibility? My environment I think. My style is constantly evolving depending on where I am. What are your style essentials? The perfect tailored black pants. A day-tonight skirt. Diamond stud earrings. What are your favorite looks for the upcoming year? The hounds tooth print and the leather dress look. What are your style pet peeves? Rhinestones and spikes! I think they are over used! What are your favorite shops here? Sid, Cream, The Store. They always have a new selection of items that keep changing. DESTINATION JEDDAH 47

Inspired by a combination of motherhood, the essence of European classics, and the musical film The Sound of Music (1965) where Maria dressed the children in matching outfits made out of curtains, Rasha Musalli and Haneen Nasseif created My Little Closet in June 2013. Long time friends and full-time employees, Rasha and Haneen have always admired young female entrepreneurs. Rasha a mother of four-year old triplets, Haneen a mother of a five-year old boy and a threeyear old girl, identified a gap in the Saudi market where it was difficult for them to find matching outfits for their children. “Many people have always asked about my triplets’ matching elegant clothes, which I received as gifts from Spain by a family member,” explained Rasha. Touched and thrilled by the style and uniqueness of classic Spanish clothing, My Little Closet was born. “The brand fulfills mothers’ desires by bringing vintage classic and matching clothing back to their lives,” state the co-

Always, always go for quality over quantity! Make sure what you’re buying is durable and authentic and at the same time not overpriced cheap quality!
Restaurants
All malls have restaurants and food courts; make sure you’re stopping for lunch, dinner or just a light snack for energy. Check page X for a list of stores where you can shop and dine at the same time!

Lengthen the Life of Your Handbag Scratches and stains on your favorite handbag can be absolutely heartbreaking especially when you think you’ve treated it well. Destination has collected a list of tips to help you maintain your handbag and lengthen its life. • Never store your bag in plastic or vinyl as it traps moistness and may cause mold! Always use a dust cover, which will usually come with the bag. • Keep the inside of your purse clean. Keep a small pouch for your makeup and be careful with stationary like pens, pencils and highlighters. • Don’t forget to support your bag from the inside before storing! Stuff it with tissue or paper so that it stays in shape. • Fresh and ordinary stains can be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap. • Keep your bag out of direct sunlight as this can cause discoloring. • Always handle your bag with clean hands and avoid touching it right after applying beauty products especially hand creams. • Always zip up your handbag and overlap the handles on top before storing.
9. HYBRIDINAHEADPIECE.COM Creative and polished hijab style by KuwaitAmerican Ascia.
• Use a mild leather cleaner for your bag or take it to a professional leather cleaner in case of a tough stain.
10. JEDDAHBEAUTY.COM Clever and well-written, it covers all beauty aspects from a local standpoint.
• Avoid over-cleaning your bag as an excessive amount of water, soap or chemicals may destroy the material of your bag. DESTINATION JEDDAH 57

Fashion Disasters and
Quick Fixes By Jou Pabalate
It has happened to the best dressers among us. A spill, a slit, a broken heel can pretty much put a dent in your otherwise fashionable day. With that in mind, Destination has put together some quick fixes to make sure you don’t have to sweat the small stuff and evade your next fashion disaster.
COFFEE STAINS AND MOST OTHERS
BROKEN HEEL
You’re in that feel good vibe, strutting about in your favorite pair of stilletos. You know you look good but then you hear a 'snap!' Suddenly, you’re not as tall as you were a second ago and you're walking lopsided at that. THE FIX: Super glue. Always have one at home and in your office drawer. Wipe the areas you’ll be reattaching of any dirt, may it be the base of the broken end of your heel. Apply the glue and stick both ends firmly, make sure to let it dry for at least 5-10 minutes. No glue? Buy gum and start chewing, works best when there’s little sugar content left. Keep in mind, this is only a QUICK fix to last you the next couple of hours. 60 DESTINATION JEDDAH
So you just got to the office, taking a sip of your morning coffee to jumpstart the day and before you know it, you spill some of it on your shirt. You still have eight hours ahead of you and a meeting to boot… What do you do? THE FIX: Cold water or club soda. Fresh coffee stains are easier to remove, just head to the washroom and run cold tap water on the back of the material. People instinctively attack the stain from the front- DON’T! This will only spread it. If available, dampen a folded paper towel and dab it repeatedly on the back of the material with a dry one over the front. Club soda, tonic water or even Sprite can be an amazing stain remover too. When all else fails, it’s good to have some baking soda or white vinegar in the pantry.
LOST WAIST BUTTON
You didn’t gain weight in the last five minutes but the button on your pants just popped. It happens. THE FIX: Mini sewing kit OR a key and keyring. The next time you’re traveling, ask for the complimentary compact sewing kit, most hotels have them and keep it in your bag. Or you can make McGyver proud and reach for your key and keychain. Make a hole where the button used to be, thread the key ring and put the key inside the original buttonhole. Cover it with a jacket, belt or scarf.
LINT, HAIRS AND FURS
Ever been on a rush only to find out your Abaya or clothes are covered in lint, hair and fur? To avoid looking like you rolled over your cat on the way out of the house, take a few minutes to do this: THE FIX: Sticky lint roller or packaging tape. Always have a sticky/adhesive roller near the door and make it a habit to run it over your garb from top to bottom. Alternatively, use regular packaging tape to make an adhesive glove (sticky side out of course) and give yourself a pat down. In case there isn’t one available, surely you have some Fed Ex packages lying around, use the tape from those instead.
STUCK ZIPPER
You just went to the loo and now you’re stuck in the stall trying to pull your zipper up for the last five minutes. THE FIX: Bar of soap and pencil graphite. Rub it on the zipper’s teeth and slowly work it free. You can also try liquid soup but it may not be as effective. Just use a pinch; you don’t want to make matters worse by having to deal with a huge stain. If you have a pencil, you can also try using the graphite tip; just rub it on the zipper teeth and it should come loose.
MAKE-UP STAINS THE FIX: Baby wipes. Effective on most concealer, eyeliner and lipstick stains. Gently rub it on and let it dry. This also works when you’ve put on too much lipstick. Alternatively, you can also layer a dab of concealer on your lips for a more demure shade.
FASHION FIX CHECKLIST: • DOUBLE SIDED TAPE - WORKS FOR MOST MINIMAL HEM TEARS, CAN EVEN HOLD YOUR PANTS UP. • BABY WIPES • SAFETY PINS – A WARDROBE MALFUNCTION NECESSITY, CAN ALSO BE USED TO KEEP THAT STUBBORN ZIPPER FROM GOING DOWN, HOOK IT TO THE ZIP ON ONE END AND CLUTCH IT TO YOUR WAIST BUTTON. • SUPER GLUE • CLEAR NAIL POLISH – CONCEALS TEARS AND STOPS THREADS FROM RUNNING FURTHER ON YOUR ABAYA, STOCKINGS, ETC. IT’S ALSO A LAST RESORT GLUE, WORKS ON BUTTONS. •• CLUB SODA • MINI SEWING KIT DESTINATION JEDDAH 61

Instead, Destination wants you to have a more fabulous shopping experience and so we propose a new tactic: why don’t you dine as you shop? SO TODAY IN 2013 WHATS HOT? As a Fitness Manager, I like to keep readers up to date with the latest, safest and most enjoyable classes offered at gyms (refer to Directory for contact details). There are classes that have been around for a long time such as Spinning, Les Mills Body Pump, Body Attack and Yoga, and there are trendy classes on the rise now.
TABATA BASED CLASSES- Tabata interval training is the single most effective type of high intensity interval training. It’s also the most intense by far and surprisingly the shortest in duration- it only lasts four minutes but easily produces remarkable effects.
KONGA- Konga is the latest fitness craze that is a wild mash-up of boxing, kickboxing, cardio, dancehall, pop, rock, pilates, disco and everything in between. Konga is addictive because it is the perfect concoction of easy-to-do moves, insane music and routines that are specifically designed to shape, sculpt and redefine your physique. You will go from striking your imaginary opponent to sexy hip shaking to Beyonce, to a wild ab-crunching routine. It's the one class that really does have it all!
BURLESQUE DANCEHave you seen Moulin Rougue? Burlesque dancing is a very fun and feminine method of performance popularized in the early 19th century in Europe. This form of dance is more than just putting on some high heels and a feather boa!
DESTINATION JEDDAH 79
CROSSFIT- CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide. The workouts are fun, challenging and build a sense of self-competition.

SOUL CYCLE- A unique indoor cycling strategy— superfast pacing and pushups off the handlebars to the beat of bass-thumping music. Diehards liken it to "dancing on a bike." Just when you think you can't pedal another second, catch your breath with a bout of hammer curls and shoulder presses in the saddle using two-pound hand weights. If you admire the body shapes of actors Katie Holmes and Jake Gyllenhaal, know that they like to soul cycle too!
KETTLEBELL CLASSESCast iron weights ranging from 5 lbs to over 100 lbs, shaped like a ball with a handle for easy gripping. Kettlebells offer a different kind of training using dynamic moves targeting almost every aspect of fitness – endurance, strength, balance, agility and cardio endurance. People love it because it's challenging, efficient and you only need one piece of equipment.
TRX CLASSES- You may have heard about TRX classes or suspension based classes. They are hugely popular throughout the world and are based on bodyweight exercises using the suspension straps. Workouts are manipulated by changing variables such as velocity and foot position in relation to where the anchor point is.
PHYSIQUE 57 BARRE WORKOUT- An innovative workout program that combines isometric exercises and orthopedic stretches to systematically lengthen and sculpt your muscles and create a beautiful, lean body. Our process is similar to interval training, but we’ve taken that concept to the next level to make it even more effective.
Well readers, I hope you enjoyed these trendy workouts. Why not try some of them out? Stay Healthy!
AERIAL YOGA- Aerial yoga is the latest yoga trend to hit the block, winning over fans like actress Gwyneth Paltrow and singer Mariah Carey, who swear by its benefits. Aerial yoga makes use of a soft trapeze to suspend your body a few inches above the ground, while you perform the yoga movements on the trapeze. DESTINATION JEDDAH 81

SCENTS
&SENSIBILITY By Jou Pabalate
Your scent is the ribbon that can tie your fashion ensemble together, it’s your style unleashed in the air. Selecting the right fragrance can be tricky, each scent gets modified depending on who’s wearing them but with a little help from Destination, you’ll be leaving a lasting effect on people and have them turning your way to catch a sniff.
A FEW QUINTESSCENTIAL REMINDERS: 1. DAY AND NIGHT SCENTS. Day fragrances should be lighter, not overwhelming, usually floral or citrusy. While at night, bolder, warm or musky scents that have an almost romantic element is the way to go.
perfume and help emit the scent throughout the day. Another trick is by applying petroleum jelly on the surface of the skin before spraying on.
2. KNOW YOUR SEASONS. Being in Saudi Arabia, you must keep in mind that heat and humid intensifies scents significantly. Eau de toilette works well in our kind summer. For winter, you can experiment with earthy, woodsy, spicier scents. 3. MAKE IT LAST LONGER. Aim for pulse points on your body: inner wrists, the base of the throat, behind ear lobes, in the cleavage, behind knees, and the inner elbows. These areas emit body heat that will react with your 84 DESTINATION JEDDAH
4. DON’TS. Don’t rub your wrists together after applying fragrance on them, it can “crush” the scent. Only spray perfume on your
hair if it’s freshly washed and at a distance of at least eight inches. Hair products can affect the odor, perfumes can dry your strands. 5. KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN: • Parfum: Pure and concentrated perfumes; strong and lasts the longest therefore expensive. • Eau de Parfum: slightly weaker but long-lasting, usually couture carried and typically very expensive. • Eau de Toilette: Lighter fragrance because there’s less perfume oil in it. Lasts for shorter duration and would require reapplication after a few hours. • Eau de Cologne: A masculine fragrance, slightly weaker than Eau de Parfum but definitely heavier than a toilette.

AN INTRODUCTIONTO
LUX URY
Oriana Salon and Spa offers a luxurious line of services and treatments that are guaranteed to leave you feeling refreshed and ready to nestle back into your daily routine. Although you must have enjoyed your summer travels, now is the perfect time to heal and pamper your face and body. Body scrubs and treatments are a necessity and not only a luxury. They rid your body from wastes and dead skin cells, in addition to detoxifying your skin from bacteria and germs that accumulate with time. Moroccan baths are known to cleanse and nourish the skin. However, we recommend you go the extra mile and treat yourself to Oriana’s Luxury Moroccan Bath, which will leave your entire body, face and scalp feeling refreshed- literally from head to toe! Alternatively, you can indulge in equally refreshing body treatments using your choice of flavors that range from brown sugar, sweet chocolate to romantic floral strawberry. One of the main disadvantages of living in a more or less dusty city is the unseen damage it causes to your skin, specifically your face. Facial skin is sensitive and therefore requires constant attention. At Oriana, your skin is treated with utmost care with services ranging from basic facial scrubs to luxurious treatments using 24 karat gold or pearls. A gold leaf is massaged into your skin, removing wrinkles and spots, and leaving you with a beautiful glow. Oriana Salon and Spa’s luxury line of services also include treatments to beautify and pamper your hands and feet. With an option of choosing their own flavor, ladies can sit back and relax while their hands and feet are being nourished, moisturized and replenished. 86 DESTINATION JEDDAH
