How Marriage Enhances Your Productivity
84 Nutrition for the Bride A Beauty Guide for the Bride
THOUGHTS TO PONDER
Thumbs Up to Support Groups Planning a wedding can get very stressful and difficult. And it’s not just the wedding itself, it’s the little details that count. For example, running errands, looking for dresses, booking appointments, searching for the best photographers/videographers, or picking out the perfect florist. The bride and groom can really use all the help they can get when it comes to these tasks. So this thumbs up will go out to all your family members and friends, that are kind enough to help and support the bride and the groom in their wedding planning process. Well done! We’re sure they appreciate your effort.
Thumbs DOWN to Do It Only If You Can Afford It!
Weddings are costly, we all know that. But costly doesn’t have to lead to bankruptcy! If you can afford to spend SR 200,000 for one wedding, then that’s your decision – your call. But some people take loans from the bank and their families just to have a wedding at Laylaty or Westin ballrooms. For a wedding there, it would cost SR 100,000 minimum for just the hall, in addition to around SR 20,000 for a singer, and that’s apart from what you spend for the koosha, floral arrangements, catering, and the list goes on. And the funny thing is, you spend that amount and the bride is in the actual wedding for just a couple of hours, and the groom is in there for just around half an hour.

Riding the Dunes - Rally Jeddah 2014 Nothing compares to the rush you get driving 200 kilometers an hour through desertous landscapes and eight foot dunes. Jeddah last month was home to its first edition Desert Rally, running for three days covering a distance of 500 km in which the special legs went as far as 250 km. The first version of the rally sought participation by many well-known regional racing heroes with 30 cars in the T1 and T2 groups. For the first time in the Kingdom, participation was classified by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) to include 20 motorcycles in different categories.
Triumph of the Will Saudi Arabia’s WRC rally star, Yazeed Al Rajhi, partnered by French co-driver Alex Winocq, gracefully cavorted through the second selective section of the race to confirm a comfortable victory on the third day. The 33-year-old driver said prior to the race, “I’ve won the Ha’il Rally three times — in a Nissan, a Mitsubishi and a Mini — and now I want to try and win the Jeddah Rally with the Hummer,” which he did by a mere 4 minutes 27 seconds from Ahmed Al Shegawi’s Chevrolet Buggy. Representatives and pilots from the Public Security Aviation Base in Makkah and the Saudi Red Crescent attended the three-day competition, ensuring thorough security of all

Overall, the event proved to be an enormous success in both showcasing the refined talent of local and regional drivers and racing enthusiasts, and educating the public and its youth about the proper way to practice motorsports.
Did you know?
The term “rally,” as a branch of motorsport, perhaps dates all the way back to the first Monte Carlo Rally of January 1911. Formerly, contenders would set off from all four corners of Europe and “rally,” in other words, meet, in Monaco to celebrate the end of a unique event.

Abaya Fashion Days – Black is the New Black Libra Boutique, a small establishment located on Abdul Maqsoud Khoja Street in Al Rowdah district, recently launched a brilliant campaign called “Abaya Fashion Days” to promote the sales of local abaya designers as well as to organize fashion events on a regular basis to give local designers the opportunity to showcase their clothes outside of their homes.
International Influence
Participating in the efforts initiated by Rana Ismail, owner of Libra Boutique, are 12 different brands, owned and operated by both local and international semi-professional female designers working from their homes. The campaign will feature participants from countries varying from Italy and Turkey, to Dubai and India; and of course Saudi Arabia.
Making it Yours
Some designers have only started recently, perhaps as a hobby, but are quickly gaining recognition within the industry. Gamze Mulfri, Turkish designer, created her brand to revitalize the image of the traditional abaya. Her unique and stylish “hooded abayas” are definitely an eyecatcher, and a statement to the future of cultural design. Other designers stay true to tradition, and classic cuts. Sahar Madani, who 26 DESTINATION JEDDAH
hails from Dubai, is trying to maintain the identity of Arabian women, while demonstrating the entrepreneurial potential of conventional design.
Going Against the Norm
“Abaya Fashion Days” is essentially accommodating the affordable and the casual, suitable for everyday use. But there seems to be plenty of room for outrageous design and the unconventional look. Designer Alessandra Serafini sold approximately three times more than usual during the two-day launch of the event. The Italian designer, who with her wrinkled designs made of silk and cotton, likes to test the conformist limits of dominant black abayas made from smooth, synthetic fabric.
A Little R&R
Ismail herself also designs clothes. Her brand “Rana Ismail” embraces the casual-
chic as well as simple cuts. The pieces currently on offer at her boutique is a collection of the first abayas she made. But it doesn’t stop there. Libra Boutique is not just a store, it is also an exclusive lounge, where customers can first shop and then relax upstairs with a cup of coffee and some snacks.

Confusing Saudi wedding traditions
By Jala Mohamed
Saudi weddings are absolutely stunning, gorgeous and extremely detailed. The wedding invitation received, is enough to get you all worked up and excited for the actual wedding day. But if it’s your first time to attend a Saudi wedding, then you might face a number of confusing traditions. 30 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Lets start with the most obvious one. Saudi weddings are segregated, in other words men and women will be in separate ballrooms that will also have their own separate entrance. Second, on the wedding night, forget about sleeping early. Saudi weddings start at 10 p.m.; guests may even start to show up at 11 p.m. Here is a tip, try to have a nap or a goodnight sleep the night before the wedding.
Third, halfway through the wedding, the bride’s brother(s) and father may enter the women’s section. Please listen carefully to this. One, make sure you know when this will take place, and two make sure you know where your abaya is, to save your self from an entire load of embarrassment. As for you men, you don’t have to worry much about any women entering the men’s section; it’s pretty much impossible.
Last but not least Saudi weddings include a variety of delicious food, different types of rice, meat, salads you name it, it will be there. The smart thing to do is to leave some space in your tummy for all this delicious food. If you don’t, then trust me you will regret it.

Khalid Al Khudair the Man Behind Glowork 32 DESTINATION JEDDAH
By Anousha Vakani
Glowork has continued to amaze us with its efforts in bringing women into the labor market since its inception. With several surveys, conferences, job fairs and an active website, Glowork is the strongest catalyst in the increased number of women in the Saudi workforce. With a recent tremendous investment into the company and a full feature on forbes.com, the future of Glowork and that of working women seems better than ever. Destination sat down with Khalid Al Khudair, founder and CEO, to get to the bottom of Glowork’s astounding success. Can you please tell our readers a little about yourself and the inception of Glowork? I graduated from Canada at St. Mary’s University in a small city called Halifax. I came back to Saudi Arabia after spending a total of 18 years abroad and started looking for a job but found it very difficult. I had my uncle support me by taking me to different organizations to submit my CV. I got a job after three months through a connection my aunt had, which made me feel very weak. I studied hard and worked hard previously so why should someone find a job for me? I started my career in Marketing and Corporate Social Responsibility and slowly grew through the ranks at KPMG. I led their “Employer of Choice” initiative for five years to be from the top two best companies to work for in Saudi. My sister then graduated and had a similar problem in finding a job along with the transportation constraints. This made me think, if it’s tough for a guy to find a job how must it be for Saudi women? I tried to find stats at the time but there was nothing clear on the unemployment rate and that’s when I investigated and asked organizations why they don’t hire women. They all said they would love to hire women but didn’t know where to find them, which was a shock to me. I saw there was a gap that needed to be filled and that’s how Glowork came to life as an enabler for women into the labor market. Can you explain how Glowork works to create jobs for women in companies and to find candidates that fill the vacancies?
We offer a number of services that are tailored both to the jobseeker and the employer. The first service is we enter organizations that never hired women before and we work with them in establishing a proper working environment and finding them the right talent that suits their job descriptions and thus we call ourselves job creators. The second service is our online portal in which it offers a matchmaking service between jobseeker and employer. The third service is our full recruitment service where we have a team of recruiters that conduct the filtering, screening, interviewing, induction and mentoring process for both employer and job seeker from a database of 1.2 million job seeking women. The fourth service is our virtual office monitoring tool, which allows employers to hire women from home in rural areas and are able to monitor their activities virtually, and breaks all the boundaries and obstacles we have in our society. The sixth and final service is our learning and development in which we offer a number of sub services, which include our annual StepAhead conference and career fair in which over 17,000 females attended in 2013 and we expect a larger number in 2014. You were featured on Forbes after the acquisition of Glowork; what was that like for you and what does it mean for the image and future of Glowork? It was nice to be featured on forbes.com, and the whole idea of Glowork is to showcase the importance of social entrepreneurship and to bring to the world a great Saudi success story, which others can benchmark DESTINATION JEDDAH 33
off. Taking the most difficult subject in the Kingdom (anything related to women) and turning it into a viable cause and business model showcases that obstacles are meant to be treated as opportunities. How many jobs have been created for women since Glowork was founded? What do you consider are Glowork’s major accomplishments? Over 12,000 jobs have been created since 2011 and we have had so many accomplishments and I think the most proud moment was when I sat across a panel to speak on job creation in the Arab world alongside her majesty Queen Rania of Jordan. We also won the most innovative solution for job creation by the World Bank, ILO and UN for our virtual office solution. Glowork recently released a study that proved 87 percent of Saudi women were willing to work part-time. It was concluded that this would create more jobs, help Saudization and encourage independence. Can you tell us a little more about this survey and how the vision can be implemented practically? We want to bridge the gap between education and employment. In the West, students work at an early age and it gives them a headsup into what’s ahead in the labor market. The retail industry in the West is all run by students and I think this is an opportunity for the job market and for students to capitalize on. It will help them become independent at an early age and also help employers balance the work shifts since now women have issues with transportation to work in malls since working hours vary and they close in the middle of the day.

In March 2013, Moumena went to Dubai to visit Vanessa Northway, Head of School of Textiles and Design at HWUDC, after hearing and reading about the university at an education exhibition. From their first meeting, Moumena and Northway clicked, and automatically saw the great potential a collaboration between FIL and HWUDC would bring to both parties. In January, Northway visited FIL in Jeddah in order to finalize the agreement that will be held between the two institutes for Fashion Design.
Moumena has always been aware of the fact that due to cultural reasons, not many Saudi women can travel abroad on their own to pursue their studies. So she began thinking of ways she can provide her students with top quality education, experience and exposure in their fields. Unfortunately, KSA still lacks a global fashion program for students to study within the country.
“I enjoy Vanessa’s enthusiasm and spirit that seeds a lot of motivation in me.ˮ – Rajaa Moumena, FIL founder
For both FIL and HWUDC, this collaboration is the first of its kind within the Middle East. “The work I’ve seen coming out of Future Institute is strong and contemporary, and I know that girls coming to HWUDC from FIL will be well prepared,” says Northway. In addition to her personal liking of Moumena and the way FIL is run, Northway also has an interest in collaborating with FIL due to their philosophy at Heriot Watt. “Many campuses are opening globally. I want to contribute to this growth and benefit as many students as possible.”
“I want my girls to receive maximum exposure, close to home.ˮ – Rajaa Moumena, FIL founder

With this collaboration, FIL and HWUDC filled in this gap by creating a bridge to assist young aspiring designers in the region.

The wedding budget
monster
By Jala Mohamed
Marriage is a whole new world waiting to be discovered. It’s a world filled with love, nurturing, enjoyment and most importantly forgiveness. A world that every truly in love couple wish to eventually enter. However, right in front of the door of this beautiful world of marriage, stands a huge monster guarding it, stopping couples from stepping one foot in to it. And that creature is the “Wedding Budget Monster.” Every couple dreams of the prefect wedding that will take place only once in their lives. However, the financial requirements that comes along with their wedding plans makes this perfect wedding pretty much impossible. The following tips will help you plan your perfect wedding while cutting down on budget at the same time. 40 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Negotiate This goes out to all you nice and wellbrought-up girls out there. Let it out and don’t be too afraid or too shy to negotiate. Sharon Naylor, the bestselling author of over 35 wedding books, argues that a little negotiation may save a lot of money. As easy as it may sound, negotiation is not that simple. When negotiating with your wedding suppliers you must put two important rules in mind. First, even if you are extremely attached and sure of a certain wedding location, explore other venues. By this you can use the power of comparison in your negotiation. For example, how come Hotel X offers an extra free hour for the party? Secondly, be polite. Negotiation does not mean being rude or vulgar. In fact, maintaining a well-mannered tone in your negotiation will help you win a special consideration.
Be organized
Do It Yourself Nina Callaway, a wedding expert and an event planner who guided many couples in their wedding process, believes that couples can cut costs by doing some of the wedding tasks themselves, such as creating their wedding cards, bouquets or even the wedding catering. Couples may even use the help of their family or friends. For example, if you have a friend with good photography skills and a professional DSLR let them be in charge of the camera at the wedding.
Picking the Right Date “Choose any day other than Saturday” is a famous quote by Anna Post, author of “Do I Have to Wear White?” If we take this advice and apply it here in Saudi, it will be “choose any day other than Thursday.” When it comes to picking your wedding day, try to stay away from peak wedding seasons and days. The number of weddings in Saudi Arabia increase between Eid al Fitr until the beginning of Hajj. Picking your wedding day during the off-season has a number of advantages. First, it increases your power in negotiation since there isn’t much competition. Second, most hotels provide discounts. And third, you can find seasonal sales on other required items, such as the wedding dress, flowers or even the makeup.
Being organized will save you a lot of time, energy and most importantly, money. Creating a wedding budget worksheet will help you track your spending as well as what’s done and what’s left to do. It’s important for couples to understand that planning a wedding is more than just organizing a wedding party. It’s a chance for the couple to prove how well they can work together and how strong they could be when it comes to facing problems. And on top of it all, how much they love and can sacrifice for each other.
Plan ahead Don’t wait until the last moment to start planning for your wedding. This may double the cost of almost everything, Denise Fields and Alan Fields, the authors of American’s No. 1 best-selling wedding book, “Bridal Bargains,” state that the earlier you start planning for your wedding the better, because then you give yourself more time to compare venues of different suppliers instead of just rushing to conclusions due to time limit. Those four simple yet effective tips will help you create the perfect wedding of your dreams without exceeding your budget. The most important point is to always remain calm and happy because after all you’re finally getting married. DESTINATION JEDDAH 41

wedding bells A wedding ceremony without music? Not much of a celebration that would be.
Whether it is a traditional wedding, or a more contemporary wedding, different couples will naturally opt for a different type of ceremony – depending on their characters and values. For instance, those who choose to have a very traditional and refined day might go for a wedding singer or a live band. On the other hand, a more modern alternative would be a DJ.
Two beats in an iPod
As far as the overall feel to the ceremony goes, whichever choices are made are going to be an extension of both you and your significant other’s personalities. And this is where the hard times begin, picking the actual playlists and variations. It might be easier on some, depending on how musically consistent they are. But most couples have entirely different tastes and preferences when it comes to their favorite tunes. Therefore, it can get quite tedious to compromise on such a momentous day. By Amr Elsayed
As overwhelming as it may seem, organizing a wedding is among the most exciting and most nerve wrecking ventures young folks embark on during their lives. It’s not just the fact that it marks the beginning of a new, and probably the biggest, chapter in our hypothetical autobiographies. It’s also because weddings are a reflection of our love, our individuality and most importantly a commemoration of our union. And we’ve been lucky enough to have thousands, nay; millions of artists who choose to connect with us through the ever-growing medium of music; putting in words and melodies what our hearts and minds fail to express. And as far as weddings go, nothing expresses the bliss of impending nuptials quite like music. 42 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Bang for your buck The first thing you must remember is that your wedding is not a concert and certainly not Woodstock ’69. It’s an event, and event music is a different ball game. While your favorite tunes should be strongly symbolized, the guiding factor in picking a wedding band or DJ must be the effect they’ll have on your entire party. Take a moment and ask yourself: What result should my entertainers achieve? On most occasions the list is simple: A particular mood for the walk down the aisle and the first dance. An evident pre-reception energy. Guests who feel comfortable and always know what’s going on. A dance floor that’s bursting equally with older and younger guests, dancing to music they like. By defining the results your entertainers should achieve, you clarify your needs and identify the criteria you’ll really use to pick them. It might not seem as easy as it sounds, but it’s completely imperative.
Old is gold Plenty of Saudi couples have chosen to mix both tradition and custom with a modern Western influence. Hiring a traditional wedding singer is definitely a party pleaser if you’re entertaining a more conventional crowd. If you’re really old-school though, you can find yourself a talented “Tagaga,” which are professional female wedding singers that perform only for the women’s gathering at the ceremony. Planning an event that provides both a customary flair alongside a western pop culture motif can be rather spectacular. Therefore, it has become quite popular to see a combination of old and new, satisfying both the older and younger guests.
To “Westˮ or not to “Westˮ? Another major concern for those couples that prefer to have the best of both worlds, a live band alongside a wedding DJ, is choosing the appropriate music. As many songs as there are out there that glorify love, there are plenty that have driven far away from it. Not to mention the endless songs containing profanity and suggestive scenarios. Generally, we wouldn’t recommend playing Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” or Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” at your wedding. Something along the lines of Katy Perry’s “Fireworks” or Jason Mraz’s “I Won’t Give Up” would be a lot more suitable.
Trust is the key That being said, if you’re like most young couples, you’ve probably never hired professional entertainers or planned an event of this magnitude before. It’s likely that you would second-guess yourself from time to time. But if there’s one piece of advice to take, it’s that great weddings start with trust – and the person you should trust first is yourself. Wedding planning is easiest for couples that aren’t afraid to make decisions and move ahead. Trust yourself to do that. The biggest decision, after all, is the one you’ve already made.

Some Traditional Singers to Consider: If you’re looking for a singer to liven up your night, here are a few to consider. What we like about them is that they involve all your guests by singing and dancing near them, and some even come with a group of entertainers such as dancers dressed according to the theme of your wedding. Offbeat Wedding
Venues Jeddahwis for
By Naureen Subzposh
Everyone wants to have the perfect wedding venue for his or her special day, but finding that one-off location that is both personal and unique (and within budget) can be quite a challenge. Options in Jeddah tend to fall into two categories (1) large wedding function halls or (2) glitzy opulent hotelsy. Thus, with changing trends and sensibilities, couples in Jeddah now want personalized, romantic and exotic venues to share their special moment.
Beach Resort Wedding If you don’t want to fly to expensive foreign destinations then closed private beaches in Obhur within the confines in the city is a fantastic option. The daytime open air by the beach setting (particularly in winter months) can be the perfect romantic getaway that you crave for.
Private Villa Rental Wedding Alternatively, renting out private villas, which have large open spaces, can be creatively decorated to suit the wedding theme you choose for with the help of specialized decorators. This can be surprisingly cost-effective option if you try swapping expensive continental cuisine menu with a dash of on-the-spot barbecue grill setup. 44 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Poolside Wedding in Compounds
If you do not wish to invite every single person you’ve ever met, consider holding a small chic private gathering by the poolside or in a recreational center in an up-scale private housing compound. The exclusiveness of the guestlist can make your wedding attendees feel all the more cherished to be part of your big day. Many compounds are open to this novel suggestion.
Family Fun Day Resort Wedding
When you are expecting to have lots of kids around then another option is to look for those private resorts that cater to a number family-based activities. The sidelines of your wedding could hold these events by having dedicated play areas and rides.
Desert Theme Wedding
For the more traditional families who want to add some freshness to their ceremonies, there is always is the option to go completely ethnic by holding a wedding in the desert in the outskirts of Dahban. This particularly is suitable if you are planning a wedding in the summer, when at night time, your guests can relax with a hubbly-bubbly under the starry night and have some local dishes after an eventful day of buggy and camel riding. Traditions in Hijazi Weddings By Lama Alem
The past two months have been a huge celebration of Jeddah’s history and culture, and so it is only appropriate that we celebrate the old Hijazi traditions in engagement and marriage, some of which are still relevant today.
Al Khotooba
When a man is ready for marriage, his family starts looking for women they believe would be suitable for him. Once the family finds a woman and the idea of engagement is proposed, both families would start asking friends and family about the woman and the man and their families. If all goes well and the couple seem like they would match, the man’s mother and aunts would visit the woman’s house for tea or coffee and let the family know the purpose of their visit, after which they would leave and give the woman and her family some time to think and give a reply. Even though there is nothing religiously that forbids the meeting of the soon-to-be couple, old traditions and values would dictate that the couple would not meet yet, and so the women of the family describe the bride-to-be to the man.
Al Milka
If the bride’s family applied with approval, the many celebrations would commence, the first being Al Milka. The groom would head over the bride’s house with his family, preceded by men holding trays of sweets for the guests. When the reach the bride’s house, the “ma’thoon” would read out the official marriage contract and recite verses from the Qur’an that relate to marriage. Once both families have agreed on the contract, sweets like laddu and hareesa would be distributed to the guests. Traditionally, even after the contract has been signed, the groom would not meet his bride yet, as he would only do so on the night of their wedding. 46 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Al Dabash
Following tradition, the bride’s family would visit the couple’s home to take a look around. In most cases, the newly weds would live with or near the groom’s father, as he would still be building himself up. Another reason the bride’s family would visit is to see if there was anything missing from the house, and to send furniture to the couple’s house as a celebration.
Al Dokhla (The Wedding)
The family isn’t alone in preparing for this daylong celebration, as friends and neighbors also help out in preparing for the big day. Friends and family would present the couple’s families with food items like rice and tea to help them in preparation Al Ghumra for the wedding, and this gift Ghumra night would usually is referred to as “Al Rifd.” The take place the night before cook would usually prepare the wedding. Following old traditions, the groom might place thin golden pieces, called “Al Ghazya,” on the bride’s forehead and cheeks
then throw away the rest of the pieces to the little girls, who would keep them as a souvenir. The celebrations would then carry on for some while, after which the groom would take the bride to their new home. Before entering the house, the groom would take off his bride’s shoes and put some pearls on her feet, then wash her feet with cold water, so she would enter the house as pure as a pearl.
Al Sabha
The day following the wedding, both families would meet again and have breakfast to spend some time together. The groom’s family (and the groom himself) would then give gifts to the bride, often called “Tasbeeha.”

Preparing a wedding guest list can be a very stressful process, considering the fact that the bride and groom are already overwhelmed with other tasks. The following is a remedy that will help making the whole wedding process much more easier.
Step One: Lay Down Some Ground Rules Before you and your husband start listing all the names of your guests, take a minute, sit down together, and discuss some important aspects that will make life easier on the long run. Consider the number of guests that you wish to invite (this may depend on your wedding venue). The type of guests that will be invited could be family only, family and close friends, or you might be willing to extend further if you are up for a big number. After you decide on the total number of guests you then divide the total in half so that both sides can get the same number of guests to invite.
Step Two: Drafting the Guest Names Now it’s time to list all the people you want to invite to your wedding. I know this can be difficult, but here is a great way to do it. The key here is to divide them into groups so that you can add or remove names in the future. The following could be an example of the groups: Group A (Must invite) Group B (Should be invited) Group C (Invite if there is enough space)
48 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Step Three: The Final Guest List After you both finish your guest lists you should then share your lists and combine them. It is strongly recommended to use excel or Google docs to list your guests. Google docs is even more recommended because it allows both of you to share the same spreadsheet and see changes made by both of you.
Step Four: Verification and Finalization With all your guests listed neatly in a spreadsheet, you are now more than ready to start sending your invitation cards. Now pay attention carefully to the coming details. Most people fall into the same mistake of thinking that sending the wedding card is the final step in the guest list process when it’s not. Do you know why? Because not everyone you send an invitation to will come. That’s why you need to make it clear on your card that they must tell you if they are not coming. In this case when people decline the invitation, you have space for those in Group C. Remember them? The most important part in preparing your wedding guest list is to start as early as possible, so that you can make sure that you have invited all those you want to share with your big day. Starting early will also help you fix any problems that might occur during the process.

Six days and nights of art symposiums, conferences, exhibits of Middle Eastern art, international auction displays, galleries and artists from all corners of the world were part of Jeddah Art Week 2014 last month. The weeklong festival took over the city of Jeddah in the first week of February. Now in its second year, organizers boasted an unprecedented amount of participation this year as Art Week got not only to support emerging and established Saudi artists and galleries, but it managed to make arts accessible for all. Jeddah Art Week under the Patronage of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture and Information, and Abdul Latif Jameel Community Initiatives, launched the annual 50 DESTINATION JEDDAH
showcase of the arts at numerous locations throughout the city, mostly centered at Al Fursuiya Marina and Yacht Club in Jeddah. With the support of the Saudi Arabian Society for Culture and Arts, and in collaboration with international auction house, Sotheby’s, EoA Projects and Arabian Wings, JAW 2014 built on the success of last year’s inaugural event. JAW 2014 came at a time when the world is increasingly looking towards the Middle East for inspiration and originality. During the week, art-loving audiences gained an access to extraordinary visual culture, including paintings and sculptures, photography and multi-media. Longstanding artistic traditions were embraced throughout, while also introducing newer art forms that were slightly less familiar to some audiences in Jeddah.

Day 1 The day saw crowds rushing towards the Old town of Jeddah to see the French-Tunisian artist El Seed paint his mural inspired by the poetry of young a Saudi poet, in which he combined graffiti with traditional Arabic calligraphy, in his signature style which he refers to as “calligrafitti.” The first day also saw the unveiling of the newly restored outdoor sculpture park at Jeddah’s Corniche. This sculpture park also serves as an open-air museum that features the works of artists such as Henry Moore, Alexander Calder and Juan Miro among many others.

Day 2 The second day of JAW featured numerous exhibits. Starting with “Kakabaing Jeddah,” it gave the opportunity to 15 part-time Filipino photographers to illustrate Jeddah through their community’s lens. They earned praise from the audience as well as industry experts for the brilliance of being able to showcase their lives in a fashion never seen before. Moreover, international auction house Sotheby’s returned with an exhibition highlighting art pieces from its upcoming sale in Doha. More than 20 works of art were featured in their traveling exhibition, which gave a rare chance for Jeddahwis to
see art pieces by acclaimed contemporary international artists and modern Middle Eastern painters. The highlights of the exhibit included Damian Hirst’s “Butterflies” and Ali Bandisadr’s “The Chase,” as well as other works by Hayv Kahraman, Jannane Al Ani, Khalil Rabah and Mounir Fatmi. The Fursiya Marina and Yacht Club also featured a solo show by Wasma Mansour titled “Single Saudi Women.” Before coming to the art week her photographic works have already received international acclaim for exploring the domestic spaces that Saudi women live in, their possessions and their relationship to the hijab. The annual event titled “Limited Edition” featured the work of 21 local Saudi artists who have studied in

Ways
to Tie the Knot By Jou Pabalate
Weddings are special life moments regardless of where they take place. However, some couples do take the cake in making things unforgettable by doing their ceremonies or receptions in the craziest venues. Be inspired to tie the knot with a twist or simply be amused, here’s a rundown of outrageous wedding options from around the world— and beyond! 1. Wedding in the Sky Imagine a wedding over the Grand Canyon or in the Venice sky. The Events in the Sky Company has been behind the mid-air nuptials around the world, they even give you the option to do a bride and groom bungee jump. You can also choose to have a floating reception, with your guests safely strapped in for an unforgettable meal at 50 meters above the ground. Dinner in the Sky is available in Riyadh and Jeddah: http:// dinnerintheskyme.net/ 72 DESTINATION JEDDAH
2. Underwater Wedding Why settle for an under the sea wedding theme if you can just say I do with the fishes and sea creatures. There are several underwater nuptial destinations around the world but the favorites are the Palawan Islands in the Philippines, Maldives and the Bahamas. 3. 4. Hot Air Balloon Nothing says romance more than gazing into the sunset while you exchange promises with your better half. It’s no wonder a lot of couples are looking to add a hot air balloon ride as part of their wedding ceremony.
6. A Truly Frozen Wedding You don’t need Princess Elsa of Frozen to build you a snow castle for your extreme white wedding; you can just fly off to the Icehotel at the village of Jukkasjärvi in Sweden. The hotel is only open and rebuilt every December-April and has a ballroom, restaurant and rooms made entirely of ice. Who in their right minds would say I do in sub-zero temperature? For this year alone, a 150 couples. 7. Next to a Volcano
5. Geek Themed Weddings Themes may be part of planning a wedding. It makes the occasion unique, personal and would look good in a photo album a few years down the road. Some couples put their shared love for star wars, steampunk or Nintendo and just putting together a wedding ceremony attended by Jedis, the Avengers and the entire wizardry world.
74 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Because a destination beach wedding in Hawaii is so ordinary, local brides and grooms are choosing to have their ceremony beside an active volcano instead. At Volcanoes National Park, couples can get married on the Kilauea Caldera, a part of an active volcano. A backdrop of lava trails flaring against the sky is bound to be just the sort of kick you need to have a hot passionate beginning. 8. On a Pirate Ship Everybody loves a wedding, but I for one would be ecstatic to attend one on board a pirate ship. Wannabe buccaneers can tie the knot on the Black Raven in Florida, complete with a costume clad crew and a sunset cruise.

Picture-Perfect Honeymoon Where to go? What to do?
By Jala Mohamed
Here comes the best part and the best question in the wedding planning process. Where will we go for our honeymoon vacation? We can start answering this question by saying that there is no such thing as the universal or ideal honeymoon destination. Why? Simply because we are all different from each other in many ways, so we have different definitions of the ideal honeymoon destination. You might be the type of couple that wishes to spend a calm, relaxing and soothing honeymoon overlooking a beautiful landscape, or the type that perhaps would enjoy adventure. Maybe even a couple that enjoys both.
Langkawi If you are the type of couple that prefers a calm soothing place that also has a dose of adventure, than Langkawi is the perfect place for you. Langkawi Island is part of the state of Kedah in Malaysia that possesses the world’s most beautiful beaches and greenery.

How Marriage EnhanceS Your Productivity
By Raghad Ebied
When thinking about one of the major factors that could influence one’s productivity, we inevitably think about our relationships. After all, many studies will indicate that our relationships can be very instrumental in our level of happiness, and subsequently our level of productivity. One of the most important relationships we have in our lives is the relationship with our spouse – they are the person we spend the majority of our time with, live with under one roof and share just about everything with. Unfortunately, it seems like we are facing a crisis as the rate of divorce has increased in our Muslim community. It is particularly alarming that divorce increases in the first year or two of marriage, indicating the couple may have lacked in-depth knowledge of what marriage entails, and of what to look for when choosing their spouse. 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH
The consequences of a poor marriage partner and marital dissatisfaction are indeed far-reaching and have been correlated to higher rates of depression, lowered physical health and poor work production. May Allah protect all of us from these negative consequences. Many people nowadays will spend months and sometimes even years preparing for a wedding that will last a few hours, and spend tens of thousands of dollars as well. But how many people actually prepare for the marriage itself, which is intended to last a lifetime.
A successful marriage consists of choosing a spouse through the appropriate criteria and by also being an excellent companion yourself. Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) describes marriage to us so beautifully in the Quran. He says what means: “and among his signs is this, that he created for you mates from among yourselves that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and he has put love and mercy between your (hearts). verily in that are signs for those who reflect” (Quran Chapter 30 Verse 21).
So how can we find this love and mercy? How is it that we can live in tranquility? Marriage is a two-way street; it’s not that each person puts in 50-50, but rather both
husband and wife need to put in 100 percent of their effort to make it work. You will be half of that marriage and so you should learn about how you can be the best spouse for a successful marriage. If you focus on learning and fulfilling your own duties, then your rights will be fulfilled too. Ultimately, this is not just a matter of ensuring a happy marriage – this is a matter of the ummah (community). A happy couple leads to a happy and strong family and therefore emphasis is placed on a successful and strong ummah, which is better for our world. The family is indeed the core of our community and so the decision of choosing the most suitable spouse and the efforts made to ensure a lasting marriage is highly important.
Now that we’ve discussed the importance of marriage as enhancing one’s productivity, here are a few steps in the formula towards a productive married life: 1. Educate Yourself 2. Decide on Desired 3. NUTRItION for the bride By Carolyn Heaton
Be prepared
As soon as you can before your wedding day get prepared and have a serious look at your diet. A lot of people believe they are following a healthy eating plan, but latest research suggests that over the last 20 years we have been getting it all wrong. Why so much obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and more ill health on the rise? A health check isn't a bad idea. See your doctor or nutritional health adviser and have some extensive nutrition tests done. Once you have this underway your health is on a platform ready to build on and improve. There is no such thing as being 'too healthy.'
Insomnia
Try your best to get an 8 hour sleep every night 84 DESTINATION JEDDAH
This is the last thing in the cards you want on the night before the big day. If you have a big crowd of visitors coming from far away places for your wedding you may feel pressured to go out with every one on the night before your big day. My advice: Don't! Create your own sanctuary of peace and solitude the night before. Give yourself time to relax and unwind from the last few months of thoughts and preparations. Top up on calcium and magnesium from food. These are calming minerals for nerves and your brain.
Eating late the night before
Not a good idea, as your body is busy assimilating this food rather than resting and repairing. Two hours before bedtime choose a selection of fresh organic vegetables, for instance raw broccoli and cauliflower with a dressing of your choice, and sprinkled with dried Parmesan cheese and a few almonds. Using vegetables and protein rather than carbohydrates will help you feel less bloated the next day so that you can slip into your style for the day. Remember “what you eat one day, you wear the next!”
Water, water and more water
I always have water on my mind. We are in essence “swimming human fish.” We need water as humans just like fish need it to swim in.
An average adult requires 8 glasses of water per day
The food we eat is as important as the liquid we drink. More than half of us or even more don’t drink nearly enough water to function properly. We are made up of around 80 percent water, so to get just a bit dehydrated our bodily functions rapidly deteriorate. Did you know that by drinking approximately eight glasses of water a day will help any good weight management program and you will be guaranteed to lose pounds without pounding out at a gym. People think that they are getting enough daily hydration by consuming lots of coffee and tea during the day, but even though these drinks are liquids they are also diuretics, which means they promote the body to get rid of water thereby speeding up dehydration process. DESTINATION JEDDAH 85
Sugar
Refined carbohydrates are one of our worst enemies. It's best to get back to our ancestors way of existing, snacking on berries, nuts and seeds and the odd wild animal. If you're more into vegetarian that's great too. Sugar makes your cells age faster as a result of a process known as glycation. Basically what happens is sugar attacks protein, changes its structure and as a result your skin, organs, cells and more become less elastic and get older faster. As a result cell damage happens when you eat burned or fatty foods. It's called oxidative stress or free radical damage as well. Choose options like blackstrap molasses, which have the edge over its sugar rival in that one tablespoon provides approximately 20 percent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron. Sugar on the other hand is addictive and can only provide us with empty calories, which means it provides energy but little or no valuable nutrients and is responsible for piling on the pounds. A spoonful of raw, organic honey from the comb is also a good sweet treat. Try and stick with maximum of one spoon per day. Make sure any white granulated sugar is removed from your food cupboards. Scientists believe that sugar should be classed as a drug along with tobacco, alcohol and all other prescription drugs.
Search online for carbohydrate intake calculators, which can help you a lot with your daily sugar intake
86 DESTINATION JEDDAH
The Carbohydrate Calculator estimates the percentage of carbohydrates you will need each day. Carbohydrates are not essential nutrients – the human body can obtain all its energy from protein and fats. However, the brain and its neurons generally cannot burn fat and need glucose for energy. The Institute of Medicine recommends a minimum of 130 grams of carbohydrates per day, which is the average minimal usage of glucose that the brain uses on a daily basis.
Choose Foods Like Lentils
Try to substitute bread, pasta, French fries with lentils. If you are feeling lethargic and could do with a bit of an energy boost to get you up and running again, chances are you may need to change the type of protein you are eating and opt for foods like lentils.
Lentils also possibly reduce the risk of developing colon/ bowel cancer.
Most of the lentils consumed come from India. The plant is tolerant to drought and grows like a bush and produces seeds, which in effect are lentils. These seeds are used a lot in French, Middle-Eastern and Indian dishes as a large proportion of these populations are vegetarian. Lentils provide a great amount of the mineral iron, which can be invaluable for you if you are not too keen on eating meat. Lentils are an affordable alternative to meat, though important to combine with bread or rice with a meal as they lack essential amino acids that meat has. This is a process adopted by vegetarians the world over. These seeds provide useful amounts of folate and thiamine, essential vitamins for DNA formation and energy production. Significant amounts of the mineral iron will also contribute positively to the biochemical energy cycle of the body
The bottom line
Nutrition is all about step-by-step, and a slow approach to changing eating habits is key. Try to incorporate the above tips and build on it slowly over time. You have the rest of your life!

A Trip To Historic Saudi
By Jala Mohamed
Legend has it that Eve, the first woman created on Earth (peace be upon her), also known as Hawa, was buried in old Jeddah. While there is no absolute archaeological evidence to support this, the legend still remains alive and passed on by generations.
It is estimated that her tomb was around 120 meters long and three meters wide, before its condition began to deteriorate. Even though there is a sign written by the cemetery gate that reads “Eve’s grave,” there are no headstones or names that mark the exact spot that Eve is buried. This is to prevent people from venerating the site. According to a tale, Jeddah was named after our universal grandmother Eve, since Jeddah means
(grandmother) in Arabic. However, some scholars disagree on how Jeddah got its name. They believe that Jeddah got its name from its location, and it’s pronounced “Judddah,” which means seashore in Arabic. Whether all of this is a myth or a fact, it is difficult to tell, because no one is left to tell the story.
