THOUGHTS TO PONDER
Thumbs Up to Environmentally-Friendly Schools Around 75 schools in the Kingdom will distribute iPads instead of textbooks. This move will make learning much more fun for students and most importantly it will protect the environment from pollution and deforestation. This thumbs up goes out to all schools that execute innovative ways to protect the environment as well as enhancing the students learning experience.
Thumbs DOWN to Not Enough Organic Shops The health benefits of organic food are countless. In addition to its benefits for the heart, immune system and more, organic food is always preferred because it is prepared without the use of chemical fertilizers that negatively affect the body. We have a few shops in Jeddah that sell organic products, but unfortunately not enough. We need and want more, and we ask of the existing ones to speak up so we can find them all.

Tree Week in
Jeddah
By Jala Mohamed
Jeddah’s municipality in March organized Jeddah’s Tree Week with the city’s gardening and landscaping department, the main player at the event. The overall theme of the week revolved around one main slogan “A tree for our generations.” The central goal was to educate the youngsters about the environment as well as the importance and benefits of greenery in our society. The event began with volunteers handing out saplings to all employees of the municipality for planting. During the week, more saplings were given out to the public in different malls around Jeddah including Red Sea Mall, Event Mall and Alandalus Mall. The last day of Tree Week took place at the Tahliya walkway also known as Al Mamsha. Saplings were distributed to everyone around the Mamsha to plant at the sidewalk. At the entrance of the event people gathered around a memory board that was placed for the participants to write their thanks, regards and thoughts about Tree Week and share it with the rest. There was also a photo stand where people grouped to take

pictures with the theme and logo of Tree Week behind them. On this day everyone on the Mamsha was walking around, holding saplings in their hands searching for the best spot to plant it. Mathew Silen, an English teacher said: “I love the whole idea of Tree Week and I joined today just to support it.” Dr. Ayman Alnafar, another participant, said that he was motivated to join this day because of the Hadith: “There is no Muslim who plants a tree or sows seeds and then a bird, or a person, or an animal eats from it except that it is regarded as a charity for him.”

Amr AL Madani 32 DESTINATION JEDDAH
By Hana Al Jazzar
In a country that is gearing towards innovation and development, Amr Al Madani had a vision to inspire our youth. This drove him to co-found the now multiawarded National TalentS Company, which earned Amr a name for himself in the field of Social Entrepreneurship and Education. His work recently landed him on the cover of Forbes MiddleEast and we thought it’s high time the city also got to know this inspiring Saudi. Can you tell us a little about yourself, your educational background and your current position?
What kind of services and activities does TalentS offer?
In 2007, after a four-year successful career at Saudi Aramco, I endeavored in establishing TalentS along with my friend and co-founder Saeed Saeed. Through TalentS, we truly believed that we could support transitioning Saudi Arabia into a technologically competitive country by inspiring youth to become science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) enthusiasts. We both quit Saudi Aramco together and we remain engaged in making our dreams come true.
•
TalentS mainly offers three types of services: My name is Amr Al Madani and currently I am the director of Mishkat Interactive Center • CSR STEM programs support for Atomic and Renewable Energy and cocompanies in shaping and realizing their founder of National TalentS Co. for Training CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and Education. I carry a Bachelor of Science vision through sustainable and highly degree in Electrical Engineering from the visible programs and events. University of Kansas and currently enrolled in the Program for Leadership Development • STEM Museum/Science Center Design at Harvard Business School. and Management offers complete solutions for museums How and why did you start TalentS? and science centers.
What is the concept and vision behind TalentS? TalentS is a specialized organization that designs and operates value-added educational STEM programs, activities and science centers. TalentS develops its own specialized content and programs to help clients reach out to Saudi youth. Focusing on the field of technology in education, we facilitate the learning experience and help our youth reach their potentials all the while enhancing their skills of acquiring and creating knowledge through creative and inspiring programs.
School STEM programs provide STEM solutions for schools targeting both students and teachers. These programs range from short-term training sessions to seasonal robotics competitions.
Can you give us some examples of where and how you implemented your services in different organizations and companies in Saudi Arabia? STEM Museum/Science Center Design and Management: TalentS led the development of Mishkat Interactive Center for Atomic and Renewable Energy, an initiative by King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy. TalentS, through its international and local teams, managed content and exhibits design for the museum. TalentS also orchestrated all equipment and scientific tools needed to make the museum exhibit hands-on. CSR STEM Programs: Science and Math Camps: With our in-house expertise and extended local and international network, we DESTINATION JEDDAH 33
specialize in designing and operating STEMbased camps that provide effective and high quality programs. Such programs are executed with Saudi Aramco, Siemens and other large corporations in the region. Fabrication Labs: Extending technology applications by introducing hands-on practical skill training in electronic technology, computing, coding, 3D printing and personal and digital fabrication using computer numerical control machining (CNC) systems. Programs for Gifted Students: We collaborated with Mawhiba (King Abdulaziz and his Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity ) to design gifted students’ summer programs, robotics competitions and the first national science fair program. Since 2008, we have been conducting various programs for thousands of gifted children. Our expertise in designing advanced content and operating specialized programs has helped them become more knowledgeable and help them excel in their specific fields of interests. I understand that TalentS organized The First Annual LEGO League, can you tell us more about that? Every year, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, TalentS runs the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Robotics Competition. Thousands of students from both private and public schools in Saudi participate and compete to qualify for the world finals. FLL delivers a stimulating learning experience. This is by encouraging students to build solutions for challenging and exciting problems using robotics engineering, coding and research. This year, 3,000 students and more than 400 teams nationwide will be taking part in the program. What’s next for TalentS? Over the course of the past years, TalentS has proudly earned the Saudi Fast Growth 34 DESTINATION JEDDAH
awards in 2009 and 2011. TalentS’ board and management team will continue to focus on carrying out truly effective programs and services while expanding them into the GCC region in the upcoming years. We plan to enlarge our internal capacity for creative STEM programs and solutions, in addition to setting up creative project management and operational management systems. We aspire to grow and become the leading creative service providers in the STEM youth education landscape in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region.

SAUDI'S Top CSR Oriented Organizations By Naureen Subzposh
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is defined as the continuing commitment by businesses to behave ethically and contribute to economic development of the country they operate it while improving the quality of life of their workforce and their families as well as of society at large. By those standards, CSR activity is not something new in Saudi Arabia. In fact, we have heard and oftentimes taken part in various initiatives and events conducted by local and multinational companies for a fairly long time. Based on our analysis the top four companies who regularly implemented world-class CSR programs in KSA are:
AL BAIK: In 2010, Al Baik joined forces with the Ministry of Education and Khawater to launch the Feena Khair – My School, My Responsibility program that encourages elementary grade students to take pride in maintaining a healthy and clean school environment by spending the last 15 minutes of their school day cleaning their classrooms. The program now runs in more than 50 schools across Jeddah.
As if giving away heavily subsidized (and always tasty) meals during Ramadan and Hajj wasn’t enough, Al Baik has carved a special niche for itself in the sheer number of community development activities. 38 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Inspired by the concept of summer camp, the Al Baik House Hero program also targets the Kingdom’s youth during the long, hot summers. The program teaches young boys and girls to do simple DIY skills like electrical basics and safety, plumbing, first aid procedures, fire safety and prevention, general household painting and maintenance. Al Baik has trained more than 5,000 young boys and girls in Makkah and Jeddah alone to help out more around the house.
Abdul Latif Jameel:
SAUDI ARAMCO:
Abdul Latif Jameel Community Initiatives (ALJCI) covers a large spectrum of community needs. However, its greatest emphasis remains providing people with the skills to pursue their chosen profession and the financial support of small businesses and entrepreneurs.
Saudi Aramco has a long and cherished history of committing itself to do meaningful CSR in this country. It supports many charitable organizations such as the Joud Charitable Women Association, Al-Rahma Medical Charitable Society and the Saudi Association for Hearing Impairment.
In 2003, it initiated one of the biggest CSR start-ups in the Kingdom, known as Bab Rizq Jameel, which has since created more than 345,000 jobs for men and women. The main objective is to create employment and support small projects with an interest-free loan. The program also offers young entrepreneurs help to start their own business, which will in turn create job opportunities in the market. Other programs under Abdul Latif Jameel are Small Business Program, Direct Recruitment Program, Truck and Taxi Ownership; all these platforms create more employment for well-deserved citizens.
More recently it also launched its iThra (richness) Knowledge Program in Jeddah at Aramco’s training center in Briman. The iThra Knowledge Program in Jeddah recently ran a four-week exhibition that drew 500,000 visitors serving as a stunning showcase for talents from across the Kingdom and around the globe.
PEPSI:
PepsiCo, one of the largest global food and beverage companies, has a history of supporting numerous CSR activities and forums in the country. Most recently it was the platinum sponsor of the Saudi Arabia CSR Summit organized late last year in Jeddah for the very first time. In the last couple of years, PepsiCo has also launched the Karam Ramadan campaign, where it donated more than SR 1 million to Albir and Insan charitable societies for the care of orphans, to buy presents, clothes and an Eidiya, on the occasion of Eid al Fitr for orphaned children.

As far as innovations in the building construction environment go, Saudi Arabia has certainly earned notable achievements in the past few years. Besides the several multi-billion dollar projects under construction, the Kingdom has become almost famous for its potential in producing energy efficient solutions to urban planning. And among the most impressive of said achievements, is the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Jeddah.

Back to the Roots
In order to accomplish these objectives and to respond to the particularly hot and humid climate of the region, the project team pursued inspiration from traditional Arabian architecture and design methods. Some of these methods include the compact planning of traditional Arab cities, the traditional souk or market, the overhanging Arabic Bedouin tent, traditional passive ventilation strategies, and the Mashrabiya, a wooden latticework screen, inspired the design of the campus’s shading devices. The university aims to exhibit new ways to build in the region, and new ways to live that encourage responsible conservancy of energy resources. It also acts as a role model, demonstrating that environmentally responsible methods of living are viable in the region. And if the negative climate changes have taught us anything, it’s that we must look into enhancing our way of life; redeeming our home and ourselves.
Walk the 'Green' Line
For instance, the university buildings have been specifically constructed to utilize natural light and ventilation as well as a roof capable of carrying 12,000 square meters of solar, thermal and photovoltaic arrays to produce 3,300-megawatt hours of clean energy annually. That’s almost enough to power three million homes a year. But it doesn’t end there; elements of sustainability are featured in the design of the entire community. The project designers sought to create a campus that relied less on automotive transportation and more on pedestrian and alternative transport systems, including bicycles, Segways, communityshared electric vehicles, and buses. Thus, traveling around campus would not only benefit your health, but work towards saving our planet.
Going Platinum
This magnificently designed testament to human ingenuity was crowned Saudi Arabia’s first LEED-certified project, earning a LEED Platinum certification. Covering an astounding 496,000 square meters; in 2010, it represented the world’s largest LEED Platinum project. This is considered a remarkable success and unparalleled in the Kingdom. As the university triumphs in innovation and possibility, the challenge then becomes to uphold this pattern of sustainable merit. The campus must maintain this value of excellence in order to successfully house the immense range of scientific research to be conducted at the university in order to improve its environmental criteria while underwriting sustainable solutions to the world. The KAUST campus was designed with a central prospect in mind: to construct a contemporary work of architecture that would challenge the global scientific community while being firmly rooted in the local Saudi culture. It’s also designed to produce a campus of the highest physical quality at record speed meant an unbridled dedication to sustainable development. That includes research into renewable energy, waste management, and recycled material, among several other sustainable technologies.

Naqaa Sustainability Solutions Purifying the environment one company at a time By Anousha Vakani
Naqaa Sustainability Solutions is one of those local gems that sprang from the passion and creativity of young college students. Concerned with the lack of environmental resources around them and determined to be more than just a group of general environmentalists, three fresh graduates of Dar Al Hekma University decided to form a company that provides sustainability solutions to other organizations.
When and how did Naqaa Sustainability Solutions begin?
Naqaa Sustainability Solutions is an emerging social enterprise founded by three female social entrepreneurs – myself, Norah Magraby and Muna Al Amer. It was founded while we were studying our undergrad at Dar Al Hekma University in 2008. We had a common passion towards the environment, and we identified the great need for green and eco-friendly practices in the community. Instead of functioning as a group of general environmentalists, we rationalized our activities to focus on encouraging and assisting businesses to go green. We registered Naqaa as a formal company in 2011. Naqaa acknowledges the vast influence that businesses hold in society today, and as sustainability and green business holds a lot of value in corporate social responsibility, we help businesses make a more positive impact in the community.
In brief, what exactly does Naqaa do and what are its goals?
Naqaa assists organizations in Saudi Arabia with designing, implementing and 44 DESTINATION JEDDAH
measuring their sustainability performances. We take on the responsibility of working as their sustainability department to plan and implement green initiatives. We aim to integrate corporate environmental sustainability in every Saudi business and to create value through introducing green practices that tackle environmental challenges in Saudi Arabia.
What inspires Naqaa to be green?
Our name is derived from the Arabic word Naqaa, which means “purityˮ– we value the universal right to have strong, healthy communities with honest and fair approaches to sustainable development. We not only have a personal passion towards the environment and sustainable development, but we found a gap in the community due to several factors such as the fact that school curricula lack strong environmental education programs, the Kingdom lacks the facilities that would make it accessible for the public to adopt environmental preservation practices such as recyclable waste collection points and finally that the local media seldom highlights the issue of environmental awareness.
You once mentioned that you are mostly contacted by international companies. Is this still true? If yes, why?
Yes, that is true. As business sustainability nowadays has gone from optional to a must, many companies have included sustainability in their core business visions and principles. Therefore, it was easy to work with them as these companies were already aware of the environment and of the social and financial benefits of implementing green initiatives because the concept of green business practices is mainly driven by their main branches.
Who are your main clients and projects?
Our clients include international and local Saudi businesses; NPOs such as Majid Society, SEDCO holding, Unilever, MARS, TOTAL, BUPA Arabia and Nestle. That is a major part of what we do. We also take part in community engagement campaigns, deliver workshops and organize online awareness campaigns.
Since the beginning of Naqaa and now, what changes do you see in the environmental awareness levels of people in KSA? What changes do you hope to see in the future?
It is increasing in all levels of the community, and we would like to see it continue. We would like for environmental awareness to start with the new generation in schools and in the local media. We would like to see more practical action towards environmental conservation and sustainable development with the collaboration of all sectors – public, private, NGOs and academic. We would also like to see laws across Saudi Arabia encouraging people to take part in environmental practices, such as making recycling a duty enforced by the government to individuals and businesses, in additionto other laws to avoid any kind of environmental violations.
“Our objective is to
inspire, support and empower the next generation of Saudi social entrepreneurs by serving as mentors to enable them to turn their passions into profit, as we have done with Naqaaˮ – Mona Othman, Co-Founder

What are the most urgent environmental issues in KSA?
High consumption level of water in a country that doesn’t have much water resources, heavy independence on the usage of oil products, lack of public awareness of environmental threatening issues, lack of waste management facilities and pollution.
Lastly, what would you like to tell our readers regarding the environment? What can they do to make KSA greener? We all have to be very thankful to the availability of resources that we have today and the subsidies that we have been provided for by our government. However, everyone has to play the role of khalifa in our everyday lives because environmental protection is the responsibility of everyone – not only the public and private sector or the government. If everyone takes a pledge to adopt one eco-friendly practice such as using a refillable water bottle or think of ways an item can be reused before throwing it in the garbage, what a positive impact we would leave for future generations! If made as a habit as it would make a huge impact. Let's keep a green footprint. Email: info@naqaa.com.sa Web: www.naqaa.com.sa Twitter: @Naqaasustain Instagram: @Naqaasustain 46 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Social Entrepreneurship Idea Lab Naqaa launched its Social Entrepreneurship Idea Lab on March 16 with a three-day workshop held at Nesma Training Center (NTC). The idea lab enables aspiring social entrepreneurs to network with like-minded aspiring and established entrepreneurs and will equip them with the knowledge, skills and information needed to start their own social ventures in KSA. With support from the Saudi-American Educational and Cultural Initiative, Naqaa’s corporate partners from the Washington Institute for Advancement (WIA), a public affairs advisory group and social enterprise in Washington, D.C., served as master trainers and provided leadership development support for the workshop. WIA will continue to support future Naqaa Social Entrepreneurship Idea Lab activities during the course of this year, while the idea lab also marked the beginning of an agreement between NTC and Naqaa, where Naqaa will serve as a “Community Shaper,” helping NTC achieve its vision of "a community of inspired, empowered people and organizations. Activities and events will be announced throughout the year on Naqaa’s social media pages.

For a Greener Jeddah By Anousha Vakani
Jeddah is fighting hard for a greener future with a number of environmentalists at the lead. Organic, environmental friendly products are popping up everywhere, and schools, colleges and workplaces are slowly entering the green scene. And with just a little know-how and a few changes here and there, you`ll be leaving your own green footprints all over the city. • Try to shorten the length of your showers and reduce the flow of your showerhead. Don’t keep the water running while brushing your teeth or soaping your dishes. • During the summer, turn off the hot water boiler as the water is pretty hot anyway.
• There’s no reason to turn on the lights during the day, open 48 DESTINATION JEDDAH
your curtains and let the daylight in. In the evening, make sure you turn off the lights and air conditioner if you’re leaving the room. • Set your air conditioner on a timer instead of keeping it on all night.
• Don’t forget to turn your computer off before you leave work!
• Use washable cloth napkins instead of tissue where ever possible.
• Instead of using a dryer, hang out your laundry in the sun.
• Cut down your use of paper at home and in the office by printing only when necessary. For example, instead of printing your boarding pass download it on to your smartphone and instead of printing out copies of an office memo or document, email it to your colleagues. But if you absolutely must print something, make sure to print on both sides. Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy, and 7,000 gallons of water.
• Carpool! You’ll be improving the air quality, reducing traffic and giving your car a break.
• Unplug your cellphone and laptop chargers when not in use. • Instead of throwing away old cell phones or having them take up space in your storage,
recycle! Old cell phones and laptops can be sold to local shops that usually offer a good deal for reusable parts.
• Invest in a reusable thermal coffee cup and take it to your usual café instead of using their disposable ones, and instead of giving kids money to buy bottled water from the school canteen, invest in a water thermos that they can refill themselves. You’d be saving hundreds of paper and plastic cups and bottles per year. • The greener the product the better! Look for the most environmentally friendly product the next time you go shopping. • Buy your groceries in bulk and reduce the amount of bags and containers that have to be recycled. Plastic bags can take up to 1,000 years to break down
• Better yet, take your own to give talks at your reusable cloth bag to school, college, pack your groceries in. workplace or event. • Instead of buying separate plastic trash bags, use the ones you get from the grocery store.
• Separate your trash immediately into paper, plastic, metal and glass. You could even color code your trash cans to make it easier for the entire family. • Take your separated recyclable trash to your nearest collection point.
• Educate children at home encouraging them to reuse and recycle where ever possible. Start them off at a young age by looking for green activities to do with your toddler, such as recycled material in an arts and crafts project.
• Participate in Earth Day on April 22 this year. • Volunteer at local green activities such as the Trochet project, or at organizations such as YIG Jeddah, Friends of Jeddah Parks and Mawakeb Al Ajr. 1 TON LESS PAPER SAVES 17 TREES
• Donate or sell your old clothes, books, toys and furniture to charities and volunteer groups such as YIG Jeddah and Mawakeb Al Ajr. Second hand items can be sold online on the Facebook page Jeddah Yard Sale.
• Reduce the amount of plastic bags you bring home from the grocery store by placing as many items as possible into one • Raise awareness by inviting environmentalists bag.

Jeddah`s Green Links By Anousha Vakani
While Jeddah`s environmentalism is not yet apparent, that’s not to say that nothing is being done. There are a number of environmental groups and projects around the city to watch out for. So if you’re feeling green and want to get into the eco vibe, here are a few names to bookmark, root for and help out.
Mawakeb Alajer
Friends of Jeddah Parks
Mawakeb Alajer is your one-stop shop to being more eco-friendly and charitable. They have a second-hand shop and bookstore where you can donate old (or new) items including furniture, clothes, crockery and, of course, books. These items are then resold at reasonable prices and the revenue is used to support widows, orphans and others in need. In partnership with Trewind and Tetra Pak, they also serve as a collection point for recyclables, so you can drop of your separated waste to their venue in Khaldiah District. The recyclable waste is also sold to a company and the revenue is used to help those in need. Mawakeb Alajer can provide you with color coded bins to help separate your recycling.
The Friends of Jeddah Parks recognize the need for open spaces in the city such as parks and playgrounds, and they seek the collaboration of both the public and private sectors to create such spaces. So far they have made possible the Faisal Zahid Sports Park, which has two soccer fields and two basketball fields with around 90 registered sports teams, the Al Baik Park, which has a basketball court and kids` play area and the Amira Trabulsi Park which is actually reserved for women only on Thursdays. Friends of Jeddah Parks also work on environmental awareness by leading clean-up campaigns and provide support to several sports groups and training centers. Trewind Established in 2009, Trewind is an environmental treasure. After noting that the Kingdom is more or less neglecting its responsibility towards environmentalism, Trewind researched further to realize that unlike materials such as paper, plastic and glass there was no venue for the proper disposal of beverage cartons. Beverage cartons are made of several layers that make recycling them a challenge even for developed countries. Trewind then joined forces with Tetra Pak, the world’s largest producer of beverage carton material with a factory in Jeddah that produces around 50,000 tons of this material a year, becoming the first facility in the Arab world designed to recycle this material. Trewind also organizes education programs and recruits volunteers in addition to having over 20 collection points all over Jeddah. For more information on Trewind and their charity efforts with Mawakeb Alajer, visit their website. Web: www.trewind.com Email: trewindrecycling@gmail.com

Effat University
The DAH Green Team worked with The Body Shop to replace the light-bulbs in one of the main areas of their campus with energy saving light-bulbs. They have also replaced the plastic cups and plates in their campus with paper ones and has participated in Al Nabta’s Earth Day events by volunteering as organizers. They also volunteered at the “I love Jeddah Carnival,” which was organized by The Saudi Environmental Society where they sold two eco-friendly products and taught children how to reuse plastic bags by turning them into key-chains. The two products provided by DAH were reusable water flasks sponsored by The Body Shop and DAH’s own product – Medawwar. Medawwar is a notebook made out of recycled paper, the paper is collected from recycling bins placed around DAH’s campus and turned into a creative notebook. The Green Team has made around 175 notebooks using 3,500 scraps of recycled paper so far. The paper is folded and sewn together by hand and the cover designs are by the talented graphic design department of DAH.
Effat University has not only switched from plastic to paper cups but has also introduced recycling bins. The separated waste is taken to a recycling company and Effat contributes to building homes in villages. They have also taken an initiative to turn every empty patch into a grassy area by planting flowers and mango trees. Effat University takes part in Earth Day and are very focused on reducing litter and conserving water. They also collaborated with Entec on their Breast Cancer Awareness campaign for eco-friendly fabric that releases no toxins when decomposed.
Trochet The Trochet project needs little introduction. Organized by a group of talented women, the Trochet project combines the art of crochet and recycling to create original products such as beanbags and planting pots made out of recycled plastic bags and other recycled material. Not only this, but Trochet hires and trains needy and disabled women providing them with equal opportunities to earn an income. Email: trochet@ateeq.me Instagram: @trocheter

Simple Steps to a
Greener Home By Jala Mohamed
God has blessed us with a variety of resources to continue to survive and build. Sadly these resources are limited, yet we continue to use them haphazardly. If we continue this way, we may end up losing them forever. When it comes to the environment, the first move should start at your doorstep.
Greener Home Appliance Using energy saving home appliance does not only save the environment, but it also saves money. The question here is how do we know which home appliance is sustainable and which is not when it comes to washing machines, refrigerators, water heaters and dishwashers? It’s easy to tell, because they usually come with an “energy rating” label stuck to it. The more stars you see, the more energy efficient it is.
Green Cleaning We use a wide range of scents, soaps, detergents, bleaching agents, softeners, disinfectants and polishes to keep our homes clean and sweet smelling. Did you know that most of these detergents include chemicals that are responsible for polluting streams and rivers? Most of these chemicals may not break down and
remain in the environment. These may enter the food chain, being eaten by aquatic creatures and perhaps eventually by us.
Your Behavior Counts As Well Being sustainable is to live in a certain way. In other words, changing your home into a more sustainable home is not enough. You must also change your routines and actions. This may include trying to consume only renewable resources, getting used to recycling, turning off lights and gadgets when not in need, installing compact fluorescent light bulbs, and don’t forget to change your AC filter as often as possible. This will reduce the power needed to suck in air.
Sharing Getting into the habit of sharing may also save a lot of energy. Offering someone a ride who is heading in the same direction as you may save the environment from
a lot of air pollution. Gathering in the same room as your family members to watch TV or just chill, may save a lot of electricity. This is because all of you will use one air conditioner and use the same source of light.
The best way to become green, and stay green, is to take as little from earth as humanly possible and to give more, by protecting it and spreading awareness. DESTINATION JEDDAH 53

Paraphernalia meet the designer
Mohammed Khoja, founder and designer of Paraphernalia, is known for his edgy street wear style.
How did you come up with the brand name? Paraphernalia (pronounced: pay-ruh-fer-nay-lia) literally means accessory in Latin, which is exactly how I view my pieces. They are meant to complement the wearer and the only thing I can add to make them work, other than adding your own sense of style, would be confidence.
On some of your t-shirts, you have the niqaab and ghutra. Can you explain why? In our culture, we are often very much tied to our heritage as well as being early adapters of Western pop culture. Arabs, I feel, are masters in that balance. I always attempt to tie both elements of our culture to the current mood in an effort to tie tradition and modernity. I really want to present that same dialogue to my Western audience, both in terms of promoting positive perception and finding something to relate on. How did you reach Mac Miller? One of my friends is a stylist in Los Angeles and I gave him some of my samples. He showed Mr. Miller one of my styles, which is a semi all over print graphic manipulation of Saudi traffic. On one of the shoots he was working on and he loved it enough that he wanted to wear it right away and keep it! I got a few photographs of him in it, which was very rewarding to see.
I'm really inspired by old and ornate objects that carry a story and the current mood of Arab street culture.
Tell us more about your designs and what inspires you. I'm really inspired by old and ornate objects that carry a story and the current mood of Arab street culture, as well as over the top contemporary art pieces by artists such as Damien Hirst. I really try to take objects and symbols that people tend to overlook and re-invent them in various compositions to create a more contemporary format. What do you want your brand to become? Where do you see it in the future? I want to be able to expand into entire collections that excite people and merges both East and West in a highly contemporary format. Expect a lot of bold metallic elements, geometry, tartan plaid, all over prints, vintage Bedouin portraits and American Football jersey numbers in my next collection. DESTINATION JEDDAH 61

DINING AROUND TOWN
GOOD OPTIONS… AT goodies Health With José By José Ortiz
At Goodies restaurant (www.goodies.com.sa) it is easy to fall into the trap of overeating. Their food displays, especially in their Coral Mall branch, are extremely appealing. Many of the dishes and desserts on display are high in calories, but you can also find an amazing range of great and tasty food that supports your craving for weight loss. When I have dinner at Goodies I love to order some starters to share. Sharing is a great way to keep your portions small, so share as much as you can! Tabboula is a great starter along with baba ganoush and hummus. All these starters are quite low-calorie and completely vegetarian options. Be careful about the amount of bread you use to accompany those dips! That bread will boost your calorie intake. Goodies offers a wide variety of ready-made dishes, barbecues, and very tasty and good quality meat and fish. But you can also find your way when 70 DESTINATION JEDDAH
you are looking for vegetarian options or dishes that will support watching your weight. A grilled hammour fillet with steamed vegetables is a great choice if you want to keep an eye on your calorie intake. I always request the cook to get me a very humble main dish consisting of two skewers of barbecued tomatoes and another two skewers of barbecued onions. It might sound like a small meal, but if you put it together with the starters, the bread and also a healthy dessert like a sliced green apple and orange I guarantee you that you are all set until the next breakfast! Do not miss the huge variety of freshly squeezed juices they offer. My favorite is lemon and mint.

romania Islamic Side Uncovered
Photos and text by Tharik Hussain
“If Romania still only conjures up images of despotic leaders, failed communism and extreme poverty, then where have you been?” I wondered, as I found a different side to Eastern Europe’s hidden gem ... namely its Islamic history!
“Go to Mangalia, which is the Kaaba Makkah of the wandering poor people” an old man told me. It was quite the claim for an obscure town in the Southeastern corner of Romania. I was in search of the country’s Islamic history, which stretched back to the 14th century, and had arrived at the modest looking Esmahan Sultan Mosque in Mangalia, expecting very little. With an orthodox Christian majority and the recent communist debacle, Romania is hardly the place one goes to explore Islamic sites. Yet already the Dobrugea region along the Black Sea coast had thrown up quite a few surprises. “Moscheeea! Gooood!” said Lutfi, an elderly local 72 DESTINATION JEDDAH
stand in varying stages of decay like proud soldiers refusing to wane. Each one has legible Arabic script, but even more excitingly, they are topped with high-ranking stone Ottoman headdresses. In a country where foreign tourism is as new as democracy, Mangalia doesn’t even feature on the domestic tourist trail with most Romanians heading instead for the 70s seaside resorts of Neptun, Olimp, Jupiter and Saturn a few kilometres north.
who I had just prayed Jum’a with me inside the Esmahan, a proud grin across his wrinkled face. He was pointing to the name of medieval Turkish traveler Evliya Celebi on the brown sign at the entrance. Celebi had authored the quote.
Yet the Esmahan sign suggests a far grander past for the little seaside town. During the 16th century, the princess Esma, daughter of Selim II and wife of the high vizier Sokollu-Mehmet Pasha, took refuge in Mangalia. Sokollu Mehmed Pasha was the
I smiled back; Lutfi was a Romanian-Turk, making him a modern ancestor of Celebi and the Ottomans that had once ruled over this corner of Eastern Europe. Meeting him had been almost as exciting as what I’d discovered wandering around his local moscheea’s overgrown cemetery. most powerful Grand Vizier in Ottoman history; so powerful that from 15651579 scholars claim it was he and not the Sultans who controlled the great Turkish Empire. If you chance upon the little square whitewashed building with its awkward minaret and un-mosquelike terracotta tiled roof, catching it maybe in the mid-afternoon sun when the elderly worshippers have gone leaving only the kindly Tatar woman in her little tea-tent by the entrance, you too will probably wonder whether such an unassuming place could really be linked to Mehmed Pasha. A classic devsirme story – the cruel Ottoman system that took young Christian boys from their families and made them elite Janissery soldiers – Mehmed was only 10 when he was taken from his Bosnian parents to rise steadily through the military ranks before his burgeoning talent was spotted by Sultan Suleiman “the Magnificent” who honored him as Grand Vizier in 1565. 74 DESTINATION JEDDAH
I stared at the unkempt graves, wondering what other fabulous stories lay beneath. Lutfi and his little mosque – one of the oldest in Romania – were a fitting end to a journey that had begun 45 kilometers north in the city of Constanta, where obscure buildings with Islamic echoes and restaurants reminiscent of Istanbul serving dolma can be found mingling with monolithic reminders of communism. In the regional capital, you can marvel at the distinctly RomanianByzantine architecture of the Mahmudiye mosque, the seat of the grand mufti and leader of the nation’s 55,000 Muslims. Constructed in 1910 by King Carol I, a mere 32 years after the Ottomans left, the Mahmudiye is home to another national Islamic relic, the country’s largest hand-woven Persian carpet, a gift from one of the last Ottoman sultans, Abdul Hamid II. If you make it this far, be sure to climb the 164-
foot minaret to take in the awesome views across the Black Sea and the historic old town, where looking carefully enough you might just spot the nearby Geamia Hunchiar Mosque, one of the last built by the Ottomans in 1868. It was in the Hunchiar sitting in the dimly lit central hall staring at the blue Iznik tiles of the mihrab, that Saleh, a Muslim Tartar had turned to me and said “Go to Mangalia!”
Why Go? Apart from a hidden Muslim heritage, Romania has a buzzing capital with Bucharest offering a trendy art scene, exciting nightlife, beautiful boulevards and stark reminders of its communist past including the world’s largest civilian building. Then there are the rolling Carpathian Mountains offering dramatic film-set country and deep evergreen woodland. Around Dobrugea, golden beaches full of locals await while the north boasts the best-preserved mangrove wetlands in Europe with stunning wildlife and natural beauty in the Danube Delta.
author
Whether you take Saleh and Celebi’s advice or not, be sure to go to Romania for this is a country which, like its Islamic history, is just waiting to be discovered.
Who should go? The adventurous and intrepid; while Bucharest is continuing to modernize, Romania is not for those seeking luxury or the nearest McDonald’s. This is an insight into an old bygone Europe where tradition is the norm. What not to miss Yards from the mosque in Mangalia, in the direction of the beach there is a little patisserie with a fruit stall outside staffed by a group of warm Tartar/Turkish women who will happily make the tastiest baklava (Turkish sweets) in the age-old tradition before your very eyes.
Tharik Hussain is a freelance travel writer, journalist and photographer living in London, UK. He is particularly fascinated by the impact of Islamic culture on Europe. He is also the director of a sixth form center and a qualified Further Education lecturer of Sociology and Media Studies.
When to go? Between May and September, when the weather averages in the mid-20s. How to get there? Fly Jeddah to Bucharest via Paris with Air France, via London with British Airways or Via Amman with Royal Jordanian. Then take the intercity train from Bucuresti Nord to Constanta (2.5 hours) before boarding the regional train to Mangalia (50 minutes). I stayed at the seaside resort of Neptun-Olimp at the 3-star Recif Hotel. DESTINATION JEDDAH 75

Green Travel By Mohammed Mirza
Green travel is an amalgamation of conscientious travel practices that focus on socio-economic, cultural and environmental sustainability. This includes conservation of plants, wildlife and other resources; contributing positively towards the local communities and respecting local customs and traditions.

Why Green? Considering the growing number of tourists traveling across the globe each year and the environmental impact they are causing, it has become more necessary than ever for travelers not disrupt earth’s natural and cultural riches. Most people envision difficult travel and multiple annoyances when green travel is mentioned. However, this is far from the truth. Green travel is an undemanding and imperative way to protect the places you visit, not just for yourself but for the tourists who come after you and for the people who continue to live there even after you’re gone. SPIRITUALITY
Why You Must be an
Eco-Friendly Productive Muslim and How to go About it… By Nasmira Firdous
What role does a Productive Muslim play towards safeguarding the environment? What are the benefits and rewards of taking small yet crucial steps to preserve some of the most important treasures Allah has blessed us with? Doing your bit for the environment might seem a little too difficult initially, but doing so with the right intentions of pleasing Allah will never go unnoticed. While talking about how quickly the Earth’s resources are depleting is easy, doing what you can to save the environment makes Productive Muslims stand out from the crowd.
Conserving Water We all know how crucial water is for our survival but we tend to take it for granted. Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-`Aas reported that the Prophet (PBUH) passed one day by Sa`d ibn Abi Waqas while he was performing wudu.’ The Prophet (PBUH) asked Sa`d: “What is this wastage?” Sa`d replied: “Is there wastage in wudu also?” The Prophet said,“Yes, even if you are at a flowing river.” [Bin Majah] Subhan Allah! When was the last time we thought about making eco-friendly wudu?!
78 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Food and You Many times we tend to cook way too much than what’s needed. Leaving the leftovers in the refrigerator (resulting in unwanted power consumption) or throwing them away (in effect neglecting the rizq that Allah has provided) will become inevitable. Abdullah bin ‘Abbas reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “The believer is not he who eats his fill while his neighbor is hungry.” [Al Adab Al Mufrad]
While you may not be living in a locality where your neighbor is hungry, you probably come across people down the street who are in dire need of a few morsels. So if you do have leftover food, try giving it to them when the food is fresh instead of passing it over when it has become stale. Like the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Love for your brother what you love for yourself!” [Tirmidhi]
Alternatively, you could use that food to feed the animals too. Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “A man felt very thirsty while he was on the way, there he came across a well. He went down the well, quenched his thirst and came out. Meanwhile, he saw a dog panting and licking mud because of excessive thirst. He said to himself, “This dog is suffering from thirst as I did.” So, he went down the well again, filled his shoe with water, held it with his mouth and watered the dog. Allah appreciated him for that deed and forgave him.” The Companions said, ”O Allah’s Messenger! Is there a reward for us in serving the animals?” He replied: ”There is a reward for serving any living being.” [Bukhari]
Maintaining the Environment is Charity Many times, we wonder how and where we could give charity. The possibilities are limitless.
with the numerous environmental benefits. Now, let’s look at the Islamic benefits of planting trees. Prophet (PBUH) said: “If a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person or an animal eats from it, it is regarded as a charitable gift (sadaqah) for him.” [Bukhari] So, if you don’t have the means to donate money for building a mosque or a well, and if you don’t have the time to impart beneficial knowledge to someone, you could still earn sadaqah jariya (continuous charity) by doing something as simple as planting a tree! Every time a person/animal benefits from the shade the tree provides or by relishing a fruit that was produced, you could be earning exponential rewards even after your death! So, take your family out and plant away.
Safeguarding and doing our bit for the environment by taking care of resources that Allah has subjected to our service is a Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Removing beautiful way of showing our harmful things from the road is gratitude towards Allah. Being an act of charity (sadaqah).” a part of this blessed religion allows you to earn magnanimous [Riyadh As Saliheen] We often see public places littered rewards in numerous ways with useless substances. Detox, Anyone? By Jill Calvert
How often do you hear people say, “Oh I ate too much on holiday or over a weekend at a gathering or just in the day and need to detox?” Most probably all the time! Well, with fast food outlets and not so healthy foods dominating supermarket shelves it’s not really surprising. But will a detox really help? Do you understand when, how long and how to exercise while doing so? Before I start I want to say that detoxing is only a shortterm fix! It is by no means a solution for long-term fat loss and health that is obtained through a healthy balanced eating pattern. The type of juice detoxing most do is not balanced for long-term optimum health. However, it does have benefits initially. So let’s get talking.
82 DESTINATION JEDDAH
What is a Detox?
In the simplest terms it means cleaning the blood. It is done by removing impurities from the blood and liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph and skin. When your body is filled with impurities, they aren’t properly released and every cell in the body is adversely affected.
Do you need to Detox?
Here are some signs and symptoms that you may feel when in need of a detox. A detox program can help regain balance… 1. Fasting to regain balance. 2. Helps stimulate the liver to drive toxins from the body. 3. Increases elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin and improves blood circulation. 4. Refuels the body with healthy nutrients.
If there are no contraindications as to why you should not detox here are the symptoms that might arise: • Unexplained fatigue • Sluggish elimination (constipation) • Irritated skin • Allergies • Low-grade infections • Puffy eye or bags under the eyes • Bloating • Menstrual problems • Mental confusion
This list is not limited but these would be the most prevalent.
Types of detoxes available and what’s best for you?
On the market today there are many detoxes available. The most common one lately is the all liquid cleanse – cold press juicing. Another kind of detox is a combination of liquid supplements like juices and eating a selection of food items while abstaining from others. There are also programs that involve fasting on liquids for around two to four days before being followed by a carefully planned detox diet to allow the digestive system to rest. This basically involves consuming whole
fresh foods that have been not been modified, and a reduction in caffeinated product such as teas and coffee. The type of detoxes also vary depending on the longevity of the cleanse or fasting. Many programs follow a seven-day schedule, but it’s not always necessary. It depends on how toxic you feel. It does take the body time to clean the blood, so ensure you maintain a healthy diet thereafter to continue the cleanse. When choosing the right detox plan for you consider your personal toxicity level, the intensitiy of the cleanse as well as duration.
Think you can hack it on your own? Here’s a quick one-day weekend detox plan to start you off and for those times you feel puffy as the clouds (and not in a cute way):
Lemon Water Mixture 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice 8 ounces of water 1 tablespoon maple syrup a dash or two of cayenne pepper • Start eating light at least 12 hours before commencing your cleanse. • Alternate drinking the lemon water mixture with natural fresh juices every 2 hours. • Don’t consume any solids until the morning after. • If you’re buying juice from the store make sure it’s unsweetened and organic. This type of cleanse is all about flushing out impurities and jump starting the balancing of your body’s system so do anticipate needing to go to the bathroom more often than usual.
Note: Consult a physician when you have a medical condition before engaging in a detox plan of any kind.
DESTINATION JEDDAH 83
What about exercise while detoxing?
With any dramatic change in diet or exercise the body will go under stress. Too much stress is not always good. Therefore, I suggest while detoxing that exercise be kept gentle, such as leisurely aerobic work like walking, light jogging, swimming, pilates and yoga. This is not the time to hit an intense workout. Bear in mind your energy levels may be lowered as there will be a reduction in calories as well. to regain balance and from there continue on a path that encourages a balanced healthy diet.
While detoxing you can do gentle exercising, leisurely aerobic work like walking, light jogging, swimming, Pilates and yoga.
What to expect from the detox?
When you detox the whole point is to feel fresh, cleaner and alert if followed correctly.
Short-term changes you may feel after detoxing: Good
bad
Less water retention which will show weight loss
More frequent bowel movements (not so good)
Less Bloating
Change in sleep patterns
Brighter Eyes
Headaches
More Alert

Life after a detox
For many that have detoxed and spent a week regaining balance they should feel great, but they often return to their old ways. Which means within another few months they feel the need to do it again.
Personally I think continual detoxing is a remedy for damaging your metabolism and relationship with food. It is almost like yoyo dieting, which in the long run does not work. What is proven is a long term solution, healthy, balanced and consistency.

A Trip To Historic Saudi A 'Arif Citadel
By Jala Mohamed
The A'Arif Citadel is one of the oldest historic landmarks in Ha'il in northwestern Saudi Arabia. The Al Ali family built it at the beginning of the 18th century to guard the city from potential attacks. The A'Arif Citadel is built in a rectangular shape, 40 meters long and 11 meters wide. It used to have openings all around it that were used by soldiers to keep a watchful eye for approaching intruders. It also had prayer areas, toilets, warehouses and other facilities that enabled citizens to stay for long periods of time. Later on, the citadel was used for Ramadan’s moon sighting and for firing the iftar (Ramadan breakfast) gun. This dramatic change transformed the citadel from a place designed for war to a spiritual place. Today the A'Arif Citadel is a landmark visited by tourists from all around the world.
