THOUGHTS TO
D PON Fashion For a Cause
At Destination, we are always blown away by the CSR initiatives of companies, especially in the fashion and beauty industry. Our latest nod of approval goes to Toms for their “One for One Movement.” For every pair of Toms shoes that you buy, one pair is given to a child in need. And for every pair of Toms glasses that you buy, Toms works to save the sight of one person through prescription glasses, sight-saving
ER
surgery or other medical treatment. For more information, visit www.toms.com/ our-movement. We love the idea of making shopping a less materialistic experience and adding another feel-good factor to retail-therapy. It’s almost like indirect charity. We look forward to seeing more popular brands prove how trendy giving can be.
Thumbs Up to...
Expansion Projects in Makkah
The total number of Muslims worldwide reaches two billion. At one point or another, all these Muslims head towards Makkah throughout the year for umrah and Hajj. Before the expansion, the Grand Mosque could hold up to one million worshippers. After the expansion projects are complete there will be enough space for more than two million worshippers! King Abdullah, as a dedication to the Islamic world, has initiated the expansion project that brings with it the opportunity for millions of Muslims to comfortably perform umrah and Hajj.
Thumbs Down to...
Construction Around the Ka’aba During Ramadan
At Destination we are very much pro-Makkah expansion projects, however, it would have been more convenient if the construction work had begun after Ramadan. Due to the construction surrounding the ka’aba, the number of Muslims going to Makkah to perform umrah during Ramadan decreased. If they began after Ramadan, phases of the project would have been completed before October (Hajj season). Umrah during Ramadan does not take the place of Hajj which is mandatory but it equals it in terms of reward.

JOB HUNT
BEGIN! If you’re looking for a job in KSA, you’ve picked up the right issue of Destination! The job hunt generally has three main steps: searching, applying and following up. But before we get into the details, here are some facts that you need to know: 16 DESTINATION RIYADH
FACT #1: Finding a job has never been an easy task, and it is no different in KSA. FACT #2: You have to work hard and stay persistent no matter how long it takes. FACT #3: With Destination’s guide to finding a job you’ll be settled in, in no time. FACT #4: Friends, relatives and acquaintances can get you places. In many companies, a good word is just as effective as a great CV. If you happen to be in the city and want to increase the odds, drop your CV off by hand. Remember to attach a cover letter and make an impression on the person you leave it with, even if it’s just the doorman!
PREPARATION:
Just like with all things, before you begin you will need the right tools. Start by updating your CV and portfolio if you need one. Remember to include all your work experience but only your best work samples. Research the companies that you’re interested in and find out everything you need to know about the company and more. This will help you adjust your CV as you emphasize on your most relevant experience and will also help you draw up a great cover letter.
SEARCHING AND APPLYING:
If you’re already employed, remember to check if your current company wants to transfer to KSA. Use websites like bayt. com and LinkedIn to find job openings and connect with companies. Follow these companies on all their social media pages to get to know them better. Once you’re sure that you would want to work for a certain company, email them your CV. Better yet, if you have a friend or an acquaintance working for a company that you’re interested in, have them drop in your CV and a good word while they are at it! DESTINATION RIYADH 17
FOLLOWING UP:
Usually companies will specify in their job advertisements how soon you should expect to hear from them after applying so if they don’t reply within that timeframe, move on. If they haven’t specified a timeframe, give them a week and follow up with a phone call. Make sure your CV has been seen and considered and you’re in constant communication. Quite a few companies in KSA do not reply to emails.
Hint: These companies are probably very quiet on social media as well, so it would be best to call or visit them to make a lasting impression.
NEED TO KNOW • If you have the time while on holiday, apply for an internship or volunteer at a company you’re interested in. Make an impression and then apply for a full-time position. • Take some Arabic classes in order to enhance your CV. • If you’ll need a work visa and iqama (residence permit), check if the company will help you with it or if you’ll have to arrange it yourself. It is best and much easier for you if the company arranges and pays for your visa and iqama as they usually arrange for your family as well. Many companies prefer to hire from abroad so you have a good chance if you have a striking CV. Now that you have the right recipe, gather the ingredients: you will need a CV, a portfolio, a cover letter and lots of determination. Let the job hunt begin!

On a trail of the
Hejaz Railway By Mohemmed Mirza
Having heard about Hejaz Railway since my childhood, I was fervent to witness it. I had a trip planned there for quite some time- it was long overdue. The Hejaz Railway was a narrow gauge railway (1,050 mm/3 ft 5 1â „3 in track gauge) that ran from Damascus to Medina, through the Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia, with a branch line to Haifa on the Mediterranean Sea. The main purpose of the railway was to establish a connection between Constantinople, the capital of the Ottoman Empire which was the seat of the Islamic Caliphate, and the Hejaz region in Arabia, site of the two Holy Mosques of Makkah and Medina. However some historians argue that there were other motives behind the railway line as well, among them include that it would improve the economic and political integration of the distant Arabian provinces into the Ottoman state, and would facilitate the transportation of military forces. It was a part of the Ottoman railway network and construction started on the line with an intention of connecting all major cities along the way from Constantinople till Makkah. However it was 20 DESTINATION RIYADH
never completed till Makkah and reached only as far as Medina, 400 kilometers short of Makkah. Construction began in 1900 with the assistance of German engineers. However a few years down the line the construction works were interrupted caused by the outbreak of World War I. Nevertheless it covered a total distance 1,300 kilometers during its run. The railway was considered one of the greatest achievements of the Ottoman ruler Abdul Hammed II. The line connected Damascus to Medina, and it reduced travel time between the two cities from 45 perilous days ridden with bandits to only five. The first train arrived in Medina on August 23, 1908. Today, two portions of the railway still operate, both of them in Syria. We drove from Jeddah to the Holy city of Medina, as Medina houses the biggest attraction on the Hejaz Railway in Saudi Arabia known as the Medina Terminus. It happens to be the most well preserved one as well. The Medina Terminus is located towards the west of Masjid An Nabawi. The terminus has a European architectural style unlike any other to be found in the region. I remember noticing the grand structure during my last visit to Medina, as it stood out from all the other buildings in the locality. I was really intrigued by its architecture and back then I wasn’t able to comprehend its purpose. The train station has been converted into a museum. When it was opened in 2006, it marked its opening after 90 years of closure for the public. Locally called mahatat getar, it includes a stretch of the historic track and a train shed that originally housed four tracks. There are several engines and pieces of rolling stock on display, some of which have been transported to the museum from other places along the railway line. There is also a very well maintained engine on the museum tracks. Visitors can come during two shifts (morning and afternoon) to learn about the railway system that was celebrated in the Hollywood classic Lawrence of Arabia. Some 400 kilometers north of Medina there is another railway station situated near Madaen Saleh. This railway station is another marvel quietly surviving in the middle of nowhere. It’s not as impressive as the railway station in Medina but it still is worth a visit.
It houses small non-operating sections of the railway track and rolling-stock. There is also a large workshop right beside it. Inside the workshop one can see a restored WWI-era engine. There are many other buildings located in the vicinity; the only one that I could identify was an inn, which was most likely used by travelers for rest purposes. There is also a railway station in the city of Tabuk we were keen to visit. Tabuk is another 400 kilometers from Madaen Saleh, but the weekend was coming to an end so we decided to visit it some other time. We heard that there are many tracks of the Hejaz Railway that survive to this very day that cut through the desert. We tried searching for them, starting from near the railway stations, but it was all in vain as we were not able to find any other that went further beyond the railway stations. This was a wonderful experience for us, it was great witnessing this engineering marvel for ourselves. The grand Medina terminus left us flabbergasted, and the railway station near Madaen Saleh gave us a good glimpse into the fĂŞted bygone era. DESTINATION RIYADH 21
Special Places
Bargains and Bygones at
Taiba Market By Reina Vidad Tejano
Let's forget the mega malls of Riyadh for one minute and imagine the days when they didn't exist -- a simpler time devoid of retail brand names and fast food junctions; a time where all the needs of a common Saudi family can be found in a traditional souk (the Arabic term for market). From spices to fragrances, household items and furniture, thobes and abayas, toys and trinkets, you name it, Taiba Market has it all. What sets it apart from the usual shopping experience is the traditional flair and ambiance of the place itself. Taiba Market (also known as Kuwaiti Souk or Al-Uwais) is one of the oldest souks in the city and is still revered by many for its unbeatable bargains. In the years that have passed, little has changed in the huddle of stores lined along each other in this compound of marbled structures. 22 DESTINATION RIYADH
The area is easy to navigate and there is a place for everything you need. A large section of the souk's lot is dedicated to all things for the home. Bright lights and tall ceilings house the exuberant collection of carpets for sale. Across them are the stalls for all the house wares you'll need: mattresses, blankets, couches, cabinets and fancy kitchen utensils. All sold at a much lower price than those you will find in the run-of-the-mill malls in town. Women and families also frequent this souk for their clothing merchandise, fancy jewelry and array of gold souks. Walk away from the home ware section and you will find abayas and women's clothing paraded left and right. Try not to put all your eggs in one basket though and visit as many stalls as you can to see which store will offer you the best price, especially with the abayas. Haggle with the right balance of charm and determination and the storekeepers
will soon bend their will to oblige. Except perhaps in the gold souks. Don't fret that your husbands or brothers will be bored as there is also something for the men in Kuwaiti Souk. They can find stalls with tailored thobes, sandals, shoes, sportswear and watches for them to choose from. Remind them to bargain, bargain, bargain- it's allowed, and actually expected. Lastly, if you're looking into some traditional items such as oud, spices or fabrics, you don't need to wait for the
Janadriyah festival to marvel at their colors and scents. In the inner sides of the souk, you will find these stalls separated from the premises with friendly Bedouin ladies ready to engage with a friendly conversation with you. Immerse yourself in the vivid colors of the traditional Saudi clothes and the entrancing aroma of the spices and oud all around. It is truly a oneof-a-kind shopping experience that only a street souk like Taiba Market can offer. Taiba Market can be found along King Fahad Road, right before reaching Riyadh Gallery.

Arts &
Entertainment
ALIA SALMAN Alia Salman is a 17-year-old high school student residing in Riyadh. She is a highly talented young lady with so much potential to unleash on canvas. Alia is the example of a natural artist at heart. Amazed by her artwork, Destination caught up with her and listened to her story.
“THERE ARE NO LIMITS IN ART – THE CRAZIER THE BETTER!” - Alia Salman
24 DESTINATION RIYADH
Alia’s interest in art was sparked at school at the young age of six. Her teacher would give them a few minutes in class to draw or paint anything from their imagination. The art teachers at Alia’s school never approved of her drawings as they were “too outrageous.” However, Alia set their opinion aside as she was learning on her own that you could turn random ideas into something beautiful. Learning that fact about art captured her attention instantly.
One day she was watching The Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton with her family, and couldn’t help but notice the mad faces of the characters. They were all different yet somehow similar. Alia noticed Burton's very unique, beautiful and unusual style. The mark he had on every single one of his characters was Alia’s main source of inspiration, since she has always wanted to have a mark or style in her own artwork. Every one of Alia’s paintings has a story to tell. As soon as she picks up the paintbrush she’s inspired and begins to paint based on random thoughts and things she picked up during the day. For example, one day she was following her sisters around the house, sketching their movements. When she picked up her paintbrush, based on the movement sketches Alia painted one of her favorite art pieces. Great artwork can be created using the simplest thought or based on a minor incident. For that reason, Alia’s sketchbook is always somewhere around her! Alia’s three favorite artists are Tim Burton, Dylan Izaac and Salvador Dali. Their work inspired her to create many of her art pieces in addition to realizing the importance of maintaining a certain style yet developing and growing simultaneously. Alia is an accomplished artist. To her, art is currently a hobby while studying remains to be her top priority. However, she does try to manage and organize time to do both. Alia sees art as a major part of her future. In addition to meeting many of the great artists she was inspired by, Alia hopes to open a gallery –whether it’s big or smalland display her artwork for people to enjoy.

Lillian Ismail,
A Gem Among Saudi Designers By Lama Alem
Named the youngest Saudi jewelry designer at age 18, Lillian Ismail has been gaining repute for her jewelry line, Banajir by Lillian Ismail. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am a freshman at Pratt Institute in New York, a proud graduate of Dar AlFikr School in Jeddah in 2013. I grew up under the hands of a fashionable and artistic mother who helped me become the artist I am.
How did your jewelry line, Banajir by Lillian Ismail, come to life? It all started as a high school graduation project at Dar AlFikr. After months of 26 DESTINATION RIYADH
brainstorming, I decided to create a collection that would help in solving two major local problems. The first problem was that our society lacks Saudi female jewelry designers who compete internationally with worldrenowned brands. And secondly, our Saudi culture is not valued in society nowadays. Therefore, I thought of celebrating our culture through traditional jewelry pieces designed in a modern way that would make them part of our everyday life once again.
What inspires your designs?
When I started, I had to research and work on different kinds of collages regarding the Hijazi and Bedouin traditional jewelry pieces to get a vivid image of what they looked like. Afterwards, I chose several pieces as a source of inspiration and redesigned them giving them a modern twist.
What are your next steps?
As a student, for the four coming years I will be working on my Bachelors in Fine Arts in jewelry design and metalsmithing. I am planning to do my masters in the GIA to learn more about the world of gemstones and gemology. Furthermore, living in New York is an advantage as I will get to work with some famous jewelry designers and brands.
Did you find the support and encouragement you needed?
Yes, I would specifically like to send my love and thanks to my parents and family for their support, and most importantly, Mr. Jamil Farsi, the dean of jewelers in Jeddah for advising me and producing my pieces. Instagram: lillianismailsjewelry DESTINATION RIYADH 27
Saudi’s Top Fashion

Designers
1Razan By Hibatallah El Shafie
The Rising Stars
Alazzouni
Razan Alazzouni tops this list for a reason. Not only have her designs been worn by the Arab world’s fashion royalty, but also by the likes of Paris Hilton, Kelly Osbourne, Giuliana Rancic and Ashley Tisdale. This Saudi born, US-educated designer is young, but is no small deal. Her eponymous line is best described as whimsical, feminine and delicate. Alazzouni is most popular for her dresses and skirts, mostly made of fabrics like chiffon, silk, velvet and lace and employ a feminine color scheme.
2
Mohammad
Ashi
One of the few couturists on our list, Mohamed Ashi may very well be the industry's best kept secret. But as of late, the designer has been snowballed with much deserved fame and media frenzy. Not only has Ashi been name-dropped in Vogue Italia this January but his designs have been worn by Eva Longoria, Lauren Conrad and Guilana Rancic. Although his debut collection was a mere eight seasons back, he is already showing talent in couture akin to a Saudi Arabian Valentino. This France educated, ex-apprentice to Elie Saab has the resume and the talent for international success.

3Reem
Al Kanhal
Reem Al Kanhal is hard to ignore. You’re most likely to see her in an Avant-garde Abaya sporting a pixie haircut and standing out like an Arab Daphne Guinness. Her assertive personality and presence combined with her aesthetics translate into designs that are nothing but bold. The Riyadh native and Arts and Skills Institute graduate quickly broke into Saudi’s fashion scene with her RK Designs collections that feature prominent silhouettes, asymmetrical cuts and lots of studs. Observers cite that Al Kanhal’s only obstacle right now is in defining a recognizable “look.”
4 Mashael Al Faris
Another Arts and Skills Institute alumni, designer Mashael Al Faris founded Moushi in 2010. The designer may be young but is already showing great craftsmanship by manipulating fabrics to achieve looks that seem to be feminine but not girly, structured but not static and purely breathtaking. The inspiration for her latest collection for spring/summer 2013 was the Japanese art Origami and her interpretation was a remarkable one. Al Faris united her love for pattern making and delicate sewing to produce dresses that were simply breathtaking.

5Lamia Business
Asudari
From the UK’s capital, Lamia launched Asudari, the fashion label that claims to “combine Bedouin culture with western style.” Asudari not only lives up to its promise but manages to exceed expectations. The young designer was educated in the famed Central Saint Martin, and interned for Alexander McQueen before starting her own line. Lamia’s love for interesting patterns and impeccable tailoring is a breath of fresh air in the Saudi fashion industry.
6 Nawaf Saud
Nawaf Saud, better known as Noa of London, is the founder of NOA Couture, a brand he established the same year he graduated from the prestigious Central Saint Martins in 2005. His designs are characterized by their energy and urban youthful feel to them. Noa is perhaps best known for putting a spin on traditional Saudi attire and his eclectic approach to styling; his philosophy is to mix and match, or “Mix and don’t match.”

Taher
With no formal education in fashion design, Lama Taher launched Lum in 2010 beginning with a casual wear line including jumpsuits, vests and t-shirts. Following rapid success after her Ramadan collection was presented, Lama began focusing on long and rather modest dresses that featured lace, pleating and other feminine detailing. She recently introduced mother and baby sets that are making ladies spend more time on Instagram than they should!
8 Alaa
Balkhy
We like to think of Fyunka as the Justin Bieber of the Saudi fashion design scene. She’s a hit with the young’uns and whether or not her funky designs are your cup of tea, there’s just no ignoring her. The brand founded by graphic designer turned blogger turned designer, Alaa Balkhy, focuses on bags and other accessories. The designs are heavily influenced by graphic design, often including elements of Khaleeji pop culture. Citing Kate Spade as her design inspiration, Balkhy’s designs carry a fun and cute-as-abutton feel to them. THE STYLIST

What inspires your style sensibility? For me, style means to dress and look effortlessly chic for each and every occasion in life whether you are dressing up for the red carpet or simply going to the beach. Who are your fashion and style influencers? The masters of fashion like Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Salvatore Ferragamo, and Gabrielle Chanel but I am always on the look out for the 'young-new-thing.' I am very closely following the rise of Mary Katrantzou and Prabal Gurung. My style guru though is Tom Ford. If you could style a celebrity, who would it be and why? I came across Karl Lagerfild while buying magazines. He's a genius but I would really love to see him in something other than a clerical collar and biker boots. What's your favorite trend this season? One of my favorite trends is definitely the over-the-knee boots which are more wearable than the boot-sandal hybrids that came out during spring season. From Altuzarra to Chanel, they come in different colors, leather and price. What are your favorite shops here? I love Avanti Boutique in Centria Mall, Maison BO-M and DNA for the fantastic designers they manage to bring to Saudi Arabia and for the shopping experience you get when you step through their door. For less OTP looks that still make me feel like a million dollars I head to Reiss, Hoss Intropia and 7 for All Mankinds. 34 DESTINATION RIYADH
How do you define Riyadh’s fashion scene? I find Riyadh's fashion scene absolutely mindblowing! I had the pleasure to work and meet some pretty cool ladies and was absolutely astonished by their work, determination and vision. One in particular, Nora, the mind and soul of Nosh by Nora, really got me to discover Riyadh's bright fashion scene. Girls from a very young age here grow up with a fashion sense and a love for haute couture that's stronger than in Europe. They want to stand out from the crowds and express their individuality by developing a sense of personal style that's unique and still chic. They always look perfect, and regardless of their bodyshape or size they grow up with an allure of femininity that's becoming a rare attribute of women fashion in Europe or overseas. What are the five must-have items every girl should have in her closet? • • • • •

What are your favorite trends this season? I'm a shoe-addict! So my favorite shoe trend in 2013 is Buckled Ankle boots! They are as comfortable as they are trendy. I'm also in love with huge ruffles, whether they're on a skirt, dress or top, they add a certain edge and style to your look. What in your opinion is a timeless fashion statement piece? You should always invest in a good fur coat (I know I did!). There's nothing more timeless and trendy. Also a good pair of boyfriend jeans and a pair of comfortable pumps. I have had a pair of black pumps for a long time now and cannot seem to let go of them. I also own a beige trench coat which I love. You never regret taking them with you on your fall and winter travels. What is your must-have accessory? Statement sunglasses, clutches, and an all season scarf. The scarf is a must in every wardrobe; it can be casually thrown around your neck for a casual look, used as a shawl over a dress in the evening or even worn as a head wrap. How would you best describe your sense of style? I'm a minimalist. I like a clean and elegant look with a bit of an edge. However, the most important thing is to dress according to your body type. Do not follow a trend that would not flatter your figure. Who are your fashion influencers? Natalie Massenet is one of my biggest fashion inspirations. As founder of Net-A-Porter, she is not only a fashion icon but a business rolemodel as well.
Victoria Beckham's style and designs are among my top favorites. As for fashion designers, I love the timeless Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta. There are also newer designers trending now who I simply adore like Alessandra Rich, Roksanda Ilincic and Vika Gazinskaya. What trend would you most like to see disappear ? Pyjamas for daywear! It was and still is my least favorite trend of the season. What are your favorite places to shop in Riyadh? As one of Mimosa Boutique's buying team, you can imagine that I do most of my shopping there. However, there are many great boutiques in Riyadh. The city has everything from your high-street fashion stores to more high-end stores like Harvey Nichols. What are the five must-have items every girl should have in her closet? • • • • •

What inspires your style sensibility? Culture and surroundings inspire one's style. The ability to merge that while finding who you are individually creates great ground for personal style. I would say that many different cultures and their beauty inspire me. Most importantly tapping into the ever evolving "me" to express who I am through style. What are your style essentials? Comfort is essential to me. I only feel content if I’m comfortable in what I’m wearing. Of course I can't live without my nude pumps as well as great jeans and a denim shirt. Let's not forget the perfect white t-shirt that goes with everything. A colorful bag is important to express personality, as well as a statement necklace. What are your favorite looks for the upcoming year? Floral print seems to be on the rise for the next seasons. Also my favorite color "cobalt blue" is being used in almost every brand. Print is always in for me, and mixing and matching prints is my favorite look if you can pull it off. What are your style pet peeves? Being completely matchy-matchy! 36 DESTINATION RIYADH
What are your favorite shops? Rubayiat, it’s the best of the best in one location. In Jeddah I love Lillies boutique, Mahat concept store (it has the trendiest pieces and is always unique). Zara is my favorite for everyday clothing. I go to Sid boutique for the hippest pieces, and Cugini boutique and Dadu for the best accessories in town. I love Hishma for its unique ‘abayas’ and dresses. Jasmine box is eclectic and ethnic - I love it, and Cream always has special pieces.

What inspires your style sensibility? Oscar Wilde once said, “One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art.” I believe in that dogma. I don’t believe one can ever be overdressed. My everyday style is more classic chic with a hint of androgynous panache! What are your style essentials? A Dior sheath dress, Ferragamo kitten heels, and a statement accessory, such as a belt or necklace, have become my daily uniform unless I’m wearing a ‘abaya,’ then it’s American Apparel tights and an Alexander Wang tank top. Though, I always make sure to always pair my Saudi look with killer heels and an underrated designer bag— Phillip Lim, anyone? What are your favorite looks for the upcoming year? I’m really excited to see what Hedi Slimane of Saint Laurent Paris presents this fall. He disappointed me with last season’s grunge aesthetic but I’m still very curious to see what he comes up with next. What are your style pet peeves? Fashion is about expressing your creativity, even if it’s subtle and boring- at least it’s your own! My advice regarding trends: borrow, steal, and manipulate! What are your favorite shops? While I love multi-brand boutiques, one of my favorite shops is Dior. In Jeddah I like, Libra Boutique, The Shop (for designer vintage), Layla Moussa Home & Wardrobe, Jade Jewelry, Top Shop and Mayass. DESTINATION RIYADH 37

What inspires your style sensibility? What inspires me the most is the diversity in how people dress. I love seeing new styles and what others have the confidence to pull off. I love walking down the streets of New York and just noticing how different people dress. What are your style essentials? White t-shirts, tops and blouses, a good pair of jeans and pearl earrings. What are your favorite looks for the upcoming year? I have to be honest, I’m very safe when it comes to certain looks and I don’t like to be too out there. It's been changing quite a bit since I moved to New York, there's more room to try different things here rather than Saudi where you truly are limited and don’t have room to experiment. These days I love that we’re exploring denim in different ways. What are your style pet peeves? Matching colors! I mean it’s okay if your nailpolish matches the bow on your shoes. But matching the lipstick to the belt to the earrings and the shoes and socks is such a pet peeve. What are your favorite shops here? Why? I love Bimba and Lola and of course Zara is essential! You can also find awesome pieces at Maison Bo-M.

Trying to find fashion bloggers in Saudi Arabia can mean scouring through a bunch of blogs offering image after image of runway shots. Hence, it’s quite exciting to discover a group of fashion forward local bloggers, who with much creativity, manage to showcase their personal style.
HERE’S A ROUND UP OF WHO TO FOLLOW:

1• Walahearts (www.walaheartstoday. blogspot.com)
Wala is one of those amazing fashion bloggers who, in our opinion, does not have the following she deserves (at least not yet). She has amazing taste and mixes high-low and international and local brands quite effortlessly. One of the reasons we adore her blog is that she models all the clothes herself; she also writes about makeup and motherhood. 2• Glamour Di Amira (www.amira88.com) Amira posts look books regularly which she shows on her glamorous silver mannequin. Her style is very feminine and revolves around mixing high-end investment pieces with brands from the high street. Moreover, she is always covering Riyadh’s latest happenings and events.

Lengthen the Life of Your Handbag Scratches and stains on your favorite handbag can be absolutely heartbreaking especially when you think you’ve treated it well. Destination has collected a list of tips to help you maintain your handbag and lengthen its life. • Never store your bag in plastic or vinyl as it traps moistness and may cause mold! Always use a dust cover, which will usually come with the bag. • Keep the inside of your purse clean. Keep a small pouch for your makeup and be careful with stationary like pens, pencils and highlighters. • Don’t forget to support your bag from the inside before storing! Stuff it with tissue or paper so that it stays in shape. • Fresh and ordinary stains can be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap. • Keep your bag out of direct sunlight as this can cause discoloring. • Always handle your bag with clean hands and avoid touching it right after applying beauty products especially hand creams. • Always zip up your handbag and overlap the handles on top before storing.
9. HYBRIDINAHEADPIECE.COM Creative and polished hijab style by KuwaitAmerican Ascia.
• Use a mild leather cleaner for your bag or take it to a professional leather cleaner in case of a tough stain.
10. JEDDAHBEAUTY.COM Clever and well-written, it covers all beauty aspects, from a local standpoint.
• Avoid over-cleaning your bag as an excessive amount of water, soap or chemicals may destroy the material of your bag. DESTINATION RIYADH 47

Fashion Disasters and
Quick Fixes By Jou Pabalate
It has happened to the best dressers among us. A spill, a slit, a broken heel can pretty much put a dent in your otherwise fashionable day. With that in mind, Destination has put together some quick fixes to make sure you don’t have to sweat the small stuff and evade your next fashion disaster.
COFFEE STAINS AND MOST OTHERS
BROKEN HEEL
You’re in that feel good vibe, strutting about in your favorite pair of stilletos. You know you look good but then you hear a 'snap!' Suddenly, you’re not as tall as you were a second ago and you're walking lopsided at that. THE FIX: Super glue. Always have one at home and in your office drawer. Wipe the areas you’ll be reattaching of any dirt, may it be the base of the broken end of your heel. Apply the glue and stick both ends firmly, make sure to let it dry for at least 5-10 minutes. No glue? Buy gum and start chewing, works best when there’s little sugar content left. Keep in mind, this is only a QUICK fix to last you the next couple of hours. 50 DESTINATION RIYADH
So you just got to the office, taking a sip of your morning coffee to jumpstart the day and before you know it, you spill some of it on your shirt. You still have eight hours ahead of you and a meeting to boot… What do you do? THE FIX: Cold water or club soda. Fresh coffee stains are easier to remove, just head to the washroom and run cold tap water on the back of the material. People instinctively attack the stain from the front- DON’T! This will only spread it. If available, dampen a folded paper towel and dab it repeatedly on the back of the material with a dry one over the front. Club soda, tonic water or even Sprite can be an amazing stain remover too. When all else fails, it’s good to have some baking soda or white vinegar in the pantry.
LOST WAIST BUTTON
You didn’t gain weight in the last five minutes but the button on your pants just popped. It happens. THE FIX: Mini sewing kit OR a key and keyring. There’s a kit you can buy off the shelves of Maison Bo-M or Whites Pharmacy. The next time you’re traveling, ask for the complimentary compact sewing kit, most hotels have them and keep it in your bag. Or you can make McGyver proud and reach for your key and keychain. Make a hole where the button used to be, thread the key ring and put the key inside the original buttonhole. Cover it with a jacket, belt or scarf.
LINT, HAIRS AND FURS
Ever been on a rush only to find out your Abaya or clothes are covered in lint, hair and fur? To avoid looking like you rolled over your cat on the way out of the house, take a few minutes to do this: THE FIX: Sticky lint roller or packaging tape. Always have a sticky/adhesive roller near the door and make it a habit to run it over your garb from top to bottom. Alternatively, use regular packaging tape to make an adhesive glove (sticky side out of course) and give yourself a pat down. In case there isn’t one available, surely you have some Fed Ex packages lying around, use the tape from those instead.
STUCK ZIPPER
You just went to the loo and now you’re stuck in the stall trying to pull your zipper up for the last five minutes. THE FIX: Bar of soap and pencil graphite. Rub it on the zipper’s teeth and slowly work it free. You can also try liquid soup but it may not be as effective. Just use a pinch; you don’t want to make matters worse by having to deal with a huge stain. If you have a pencil, you can also try using the graphite tip; just rub it on the zipper teeth and it should come loose.
MAKE-UP STAINS THE FIX: Baby wipes. Effective on most concealer, eyeliner and lipstick stains. Gently rub it on and let it dry. This also works when you’ve put on too much lipstick. Alternatively, you can also layer a dab of concealer on your lips for a more demure shade.
FASHION FIX CHECKLIST: • DOUBLE SIDED TAPE - WORKS FOR MOST MINIMAL HEM TEARS, CAN EVEN HOLD YOUR PANTS UP. • BABY WIPES • SAFETY PINS – A WARDROBE MALFUNCTION NECESSITY, CAN ALSO BE USED TO KEEP THAT STUBBORN ZIPPER FROM GOING DOWN, HOOK IT TO THE ZIP ON ONE END AND CLUTCH IT TO YOUR WAIST BUTTON. • SUPER GLUE • CLEAR NAIL POLISH – CONCEALS TEARS AND STOPS THREADS FROM RUNNING FURTHER ON YOUR ABAYA, STOCKINGS, ETC. IT’S ALSO A LAST RESORT GLUE, WORKS ON BUTTONS. •• CLUB SODA • MINI SEWING KIT DESTINATION RIYADH 51

SO TODAY ON 2013 WHATS HOT? As a Fitness Manager, I like to keep readers up to date with the latest, safest and enjoyable classes offered at Kore Studios and other gyms (refer to Directory). We have classes that have been around for a long time such as Spinning, Les Mills Body Pump and Body Attack, Pilates and Yoga. However I can see that new classes that we offer are attracting the numbers.
TABATA BASED CLASSES- Tabata interval training is the single most effective type of high intensity interval training, it’s also the most intense by far, and surprisingly it’s the shortest in duration- it only last four minutes but can easily produce remarkable effects.
KONGA- Konga is the latest fitness craze that is a wild mash-up of boxing, kickboxing, cardio, dancehall, pop, rock, pilates, disco and everything in between. Konga is addictive because it is the perfect concoction of easy-to-do moves, insane music and routines that are specifically designed to shape, sculpt and redefine your physique. You will go from striking your imaginary opponent to sexy hip shaking to Beyonce, to a wild Ab crunching routine. It's the one class that really does have it all!
BURLESQUE DANCEHave you seen Moulin Rougue?? Burlesque dancing is a very feminine and fun method of performance popularized in the early 19th century in Europe. This form of dance is more than just putting on some high heels and a feather boa!
DESTINATION RIYADH DESTINATION RIYADH 65
CROSSFIT- CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide. The workouts are fun, challenging and build a sense of self-competition.
66 DESTINATION RIYADH
SOUL CYCLE- A unique indoor cycling strategy— superfast pacing and pushups off the handlebars to the beat of bass-thumping music. Diehards liken it to "dancing on a bike." Just when you think you can't pedal another second, catch your breath with a bout of hammer curls and shoulder presses in the saddle using two-pound hand weights. You may also notice familiar faces in your row. No biggie; it's probably only regulars Katie Holmes and Jake Gyllenhaal.
KETTLEBELL CLASSESCast iron weights ranging from 5 lbs to over 100 lbs, shaped like a ball with a handle for easy gripping. Kettlebells offer a different kind of training using dynamic moves targeting almost every aspect of fitness – endurance, strength, balance, agility and cardio endurance. People love it because it's challenging, efficient and you only need one piece of equipment.
TRX CLASSES- You may have heard about TRX classes or suspension based classes. They are hugely popular throughout the world and are based on bodyweight exercises using the suspension straps. Workouts are manipulated by changing variables such as velocity and foot position in relation to where the anchor point is.
PHYSIQUE 57 BARRE WORKOUT- An innovative workout program that combines isometric exercises and orthopedic stretches to systematically lengthen and sculpt your muscles and create a beautiful, lean body. Our process is similar to interval training, but we’ve taken that concept to the next level to make it even more effective.
Well readers, I hope you enjoyed these trendy workouts. Why not try some of them out? Stay Healthy!
AERIAL YOGA- Aerial yoga is the latest yoga trend to hit the block, winning over fans like actress Gwyneth Paltrow and singer Mariah Carey, who swear by its benefits. Aerial yoga makes use of a soft trapeze to suspend your body a few inches above the ground, while you perform the yoga movements on the trapeze. DESTINATION RIYADH 67

TATTOOS IN PURE GOLD AND SILVER Gold Sin Jewels are an absolute novelty in the cosmetic landscape. Made in pure gold or silver through a proprietary technology, they are designed to be worn on the skin for special events, evenings, ceremonies or just for fun. The structure of a Gold Sin Jewel is that of a typical temporary tattoo, it's made up by a paper support that functions with hydrosoluble molecules; a thin 24-carat gold film. A biocompatible adhesive layer that guarantees adherence to the skin. Gold Sin Jewels are available in different designs, from floral motives, perfect for arms and back, up to smaller but not less impressive ideograms, butterflies and stars. The temporary jewels are made to last for about seven days, depending on skin. 70 DESTINATION RIYADH

Your scent is the ribbon that can tie your fashion ensemble together; it’s your style unleashed in the air. Selecting the right fragrance can be tricky, each scent gets modified depending on who’s wearing them but with a little help from Destination, you’ll be leaving a lasting effect on people and have them turning your way to catch a sniff.
A FEW QUINTESCENTTIALREMINDERS: 1. DAY AND NIGHT SCENTS. Day fragrances should be lighter, not overwhelming, usually floral or citrusy. While at night, bolder, warm or musky scents that have an almost romantic element is the way to go.

on your hair if it’s freshly washed and at a distance of at least eight inches. Hair products can affect the odor, perfumes can dry your strands.
4. DON’TS. Don’t rub your wrists together after applying fragrance on them; it can “crush” the scent. Only spray perfume
5. KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN: • Parfum: Pure and concentrated perfumes; strong and lasts the longest therefore expensive. • Eau de Parfum: slightly weaker but long-lasting, usually couture carried and typically very expensive. • Eau de Toilette: Lighter fragrance because there’s less perfume oil in it. Lasts for shorter duration and would require reapplication after a few hours. • Eau de Cologne: A masculine fragrance, slightly weaker than Eau de Parfum but definitely heavier than a toilette.
2. KNOW YOUR SEASONS. Being in Saudi Arabia, you must keep in mind that heat and humid intensifies scents significantly. Eau de toilette works well in our kind summer. For winter, you can experiment with earthy, woodsy, spicier scents. 3. MAKE IT LAST LONGER. Aim for pulse points on your body: inner wrists, the base of the throat, behind ear lobes, in the cleavage, behind knees, and the inner elbows. These areas emit body heat that will react with your 72 DESTINATION RIYADH
