THOUGHTS TO

Recycle Our Brain!

D PON

ER

We all know that one of the simplest ways to become “green” is to recycle. Plastic, papers and cans ....the usual. But might I suggest something new? What about we try to recycle our brains!

I am simply talking about “cleaning out” the old unpleasant habits that clutter our minds, and result in our “poor” behavior. Let us place all the unhealthy, harmful and useless virtues we have in a mental “bin” and recycle!

Don’t worry I’m not going Frankensteinish on you, although there are actual scientific studies out there called “neuronal recycling” or recycling “brain cells,” but that’s not what I mean.

Assuming we are already being green with our junk, let us act green with our manners. Open our minds a bit further and recycle our thoughts. We are what we think- let us think pure, pleasant and healthy “green” thoughts.

Thumbs Up to...

PNU Sustainable Energy

The Princess Noura Bint AbdulRahman University campus is built with several ‘green’ building features in mind and features energy saving technology. Home to the world’s largest solar thermal plant, “a 40,000 sq.m solar rooftop paneling (the size of five soccer fields) is expected to provide 16% of campus heating needs and 18% of air conditioning requirements. It will also have a water recycling plant capable of producing 8,000 cubic meters of water everyday for use in the university.” The overall design of the Academic Colleges uses innovation as a means of giving back to society. This is their way of reflecting a vision of community, sustainability and innovative learning.

Thumbs Down to... Trucks Roaming Highways!

One of the scariest things citizens experience routinely in Riyadh is driving along the highway. The main issue is that there are too many 18-wheeler trucks, which slow down traffic by parking on the sides of the highway! In addition, the Traffic Police attempt to alleviate the problem unsuccessfully by ordering truck drivers to pull over. This is very dangerous since it happens near exits and entrances ramps where fatalities may occur. Citizens appreciate the efforts made by the Traffic Police, but unfortunately people still do not feel safe on the road. Trucks on the loose may cause accidents when attempting to get on and off the highways where they sometimes tend to block exits, thus drastically slowing down the momentum of traffic on the highways, and limiting traffic to one or two out of the four or five available lanes. The highway looks more like bumper cars between sedans and trucks!

ABSORBING THE

CULTURE SHOCK By Anas Darwish

Ever since the existence of Saudi Arabia, expats from all over the world have come to the Kingdom to find opportunities as well as to bring new services, ideas, and technologies that can help the Kingdom develop, grow, and prosper. When expats arrive in KSA they usually face a culture shock due to differences between Western and Middle Eastern cultures. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a Muslim country, where Islam governs legal and financial decisions as well as personal and social lives. It is preferred to have a brief idea about the tradition, customs, and culture of the country to avoid any misunderstandings or other unpleasant situations. It would also be helpful to learn some of the basics in Arabic such as greetings and some terminology that might help you communicate with the locals and labor.

IQAMA : When dealing with any branch of the government, it is imperative that you show them your Residency Permit (Iqama); it will show them proof of your name, nationality, religion, and sponsor.

MUSLIMS PRAY FIVE TIMES A DAY: 1. Dusk (Fajr) Prayer 2. Noon (Dhuhor) Prayer 3. Afternoon (Aser) Prayer 4. Sunset (Maghreb) Prayer 5. Night (Esha) Prayer Exact times are available online and in local newspapers daily.

ATHAN AND IQAMAH: Before every prayer you will hear the first prayer call (Athan) and a few minutes later a second one (Iqamah) notifying Muslims that prayer is starting. It is disrespectful to Muslims to have music on even at low volumes during prayer times. In all parts of the Kingdom as well as here in the capital, all stores, restaurants and shops are required by law to close during prayer times. Prayers usually last about 30 minutes except for the noon prayer, which takes longer. Provided that noon prayer is closest to lunch breaks, it may cause some shops to close from noon till 4 pm, which would be amazing for those of you who enjoy afternoon naps, but never the less, it would be beneficial to plan ahead as to when to go out in order to find open shops.

JEDDAH 20 DESTINATION RIYADH

THOBES FOR MEN AND ABAYAS FOR WOMEN: Most locals are found wearing the traditional attire, for men it is a white garment called a “Thobe” which is Arabic for gown, it is as comfortable as clothing comes, but the red and white headscarf (Shmagh) might take a little getting used to. For women an Abaya, the black gown that comes with a headscarf to cover a female’s hair, is a must. Women in Saudi Arabia especially locals, must cover their bodies from neck to toe, as is the Saudi custom. Some people love the fact that they don’t have to worry about what to wear when leaving the house, over here it's simple, Thobes for men and Abayas for women, saving the hours most people spend digging through their closets and piles of clothes.

RAMADAN: It is the holy month to Muslims, during this month Muslims who are able refrain from eating, drinking and smoking from sunrise to sunset, it also affects working hours for most business. During Ramadan it is prohibited to eat, drink, or smoke in public before Sunset Prayer.

CLIMATE IN RIYADH: The weather is usually dry and extremely hot in the summer and pretty cold in the winter. During the summer the sun is more dangerous than most other countries and temperatures may reach over 40 degrees Celsius, therefore take the necessary precautions by using sunblock and hydrating regularly.

RELIGIOUS POLICE : There is a branch of the Saudi government called the Religious Police. They are usually dressed in regular Saudi attire (Thobe) and are accompanied by a police officer in uniform. These officials roam the streets to insure that Muslims attend group prayers during prayer times, unrelated males and females don’t mingle in public, and shops close for prayer. The Religious Police don’t usually approach Westerners as they would Arabs. As KSA is a 100% Muslim country, alcoholic beverages are banned and illegal, thus there are no pubs or liquor stores, and possession of alcohol is punishable by law. DESTINATION RIYADH 21

In a search for the Saudi spirit of Entrepreneurship, Destination Riyadh asked the following questions: What does it take to start a business in Saudi Arabia? What are good business ideas? What services are available to educate Saudi entrepreneurs on how to write a business plan, what paperwork is required, and who can assist with financing? To our pleasant surprise we came across several entities such as the Badir program of KACST (King Abdulziz City for Science and Technology), the Centennial Fund, and Entrepreneurship centers throughout the country that assist Saudis to turn their ideas into actual businesses. We are all familiar with startups that are common household names such as Google, Apple, and Microsoft. However, these names should not intimidate entrepreneurs. We do not all have to be computer scientists, or geniuses to come up with great ideas. The key is to find a problem that you are passionate about and would like to solve. 22 DESTINATION RIYADH

Zipcar, founded by two women in the year 2000, is currently the largest car sharing service, offering by the hour car rental. The founders were concerned about the environment and wanted to reduce carbon emissions from cars. They discovered that for every car-sharing vehicle, 7.5 cars are eliminated off the road. The business started with 75,000 $ pre-launch, four cars, and only 68 $ in the bank. Now the company is valued at 1 billion $, and has 650,000 members and 9000 cars. Another great idea is Groupon, created in the year 2008. The company provides online discounted offers and shopping deals in certain cities. The founders wanted to encourage people to go out and enjoy their cities instead of having empty restaurants and businesses. It is a win-win solution for both businesses and customers. Groupon is currently one of the fastest growing companies, with sales of 1 billion $ in 2011 from a mere 5000 $ in 2008 . And lastly, Whole Foods, an organic supermarket concept, was established in the year 1980 because its founder, John Mackey, was concerned about the food industry; the implications processed foods had on one’s health. He opened his first Natural Foods store in 1978 with just 45,000 $, and two years later teamed up with two other entrepreneurs to open what we know today as Wholefoods. Currently Wholefoods has 300 branches and 10.1billion $ in revenue for the year 2011 .

These are just a few examples of entrepreneurs who came across a need or saw a problem and built their business as a solution to these problems. Inspired? Excited? The following are a list of entities that can facilitate turning your ideas into actual businesses: The Badir program was launched in 2007, by King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, as a tech incubator for Saudi tech entrepreneurs. Badir provides a skill development program for Entrepreneurs, and a mentorship network with Industry experts. In a discussion with Mr. Omar Zuhair, an Entrepreneurship Programs Supervisor at Badir, we discussed Startup Weekend Riyadh, which took place on January 30, 2013. This was the third Start Up weekend hosted by Badir. The candidates apply online, and if selected pitch their idea to a panel of judges. There is a process of elimination where the best and most feasible ideas move to the next round. Teams are then created, mentors provide guidance, the ideas are further developed into actual business plans, and by the end of the weekend candidates have actual projects and prototypes ready to be presented to a panel of judges. After a five-minute final presentation, three winners are selected. In general Badir offers all the teams the opportunity to be incubated by Badir. People are excited, and ideas are implemented. Badir is hoping to have another two Startup Weekend events before the end of the year.

Another resource for Saudi entrepreneurs is the Centennial fund. The non-profit organization was founded in 2004 in an effort to address unemployment and develop local economies by helping Saudis start their own businesses. They provide partial or total financing for start-ups in the form of loans. In addition the organization provides training, a mentoring program, and facilitates government and marketing services. To jumpstart you business ideas, the Entrepreneurship Center at KAUST (King Abdullah University for Science and Technology) offers a ten-week entrepreneurial development program through its VentureLab. It assists entrepreneurs turn research projects into actual businesses by further developing the product idea, creating a prototype or model, and finally testing out the model with potential customers and investors. According to its website “It’s fast, furious, hands-on, and result-driven!” Saudi Aramco’s Entrepreneurship Center, Wa’ed, was also developed to spread the entrepreneurial culture in the country. They accept creative and innovative ideas that have the potential to create jobs. Wa’ed provides training, business plan preparation, followed by due diligence and Wa’ed financing. So, what does it take to start a business in Saudi? A great idea, and the courage to implement it. All the tools are at every young Saudi male and female’s fingertips. No excuses please!

WADI HANIFA

“GREENERY, PONDS, VALLEYS AND MUCH MORE! Whenever a person first thinks of Riyadh the immediate thought that comes to mind is that of a typical concrete metropolis surrounded by blankets of sandy dunes. That, however, would not be the most accurate description, as just adjacent to the city you will come across one of the most exquisite scenic bliss known in the region - the Wadi Hanifa - about 120 kilometers of naturally beautiful lakes and luscious green trees. Having visited some of the huge malls, forts and museums during our stay in Riyadh, we were looking for something new and with a few good words from friends who had visited the area before, Wadi Hanifa seemed like the perfect place to visit for our excursion.

is accessible via the western ring road and then on to the Wadi Hanifa road and this runs through most of the northern portion of the valley and gives a nice glimpse of the valley. There are many villages situated on this road and it can give a great insight into the diminishing village life.

The valley is mainly divided in two portions one in the north of Riyadh and the other in the south of Riyadh. The northern portion

After having a wonderful drive on the northern part it was time for us to head out towards to the southern part of the valley

which is where most of the ponds are located and it is the more greener portion of the valley. The southern part is accessible via the southern ring road and then on to the Wadi Hanifa road. Please note thought that this road somehow also has the same name as the road to access the northern portion of the valley although there is no link between them. In the southern portion of the valley we came across one of the biggest dams I have ever seen. Even though we were there at a time when the floodgates were closed, it was still a sight worth seeing. There are many spots in and around the valley that you can easily find which provide an amazing view of the landscape, these spots are ideal for getting your grill out and having a good old fashioned barbecue - we know we did! Soon after we continued on our journey going south and we came across plenty of parks with loads of recreational activities available in them. These parks are almost always filled with families having barbeques and children playing around. Other things to look for in the area are the date palm plantations being cultivated on the banks of the Wadi, as well as the nice hilly areas which provide an opportunity to gaze at the mesmerizing sunset, it was probably the best sunset I have seen away from the beach.

The valley takes its name from the ancient Arab tribe of Banu Hanifa, who were the principal tribe in the area at the dawn of Islam though in those days the valley was better known as Al Irdh. Personally speaking, I enjoyed the southern part of the valley more as it has more to offer so I would suggest that you visit the northern part first and then come down to the southern part - as the saying goes “save the best for the last.” On the whole it was a nice change for us after being in Riyadh for quite some days. It was surprising for us that such a place existed and as we did not know what to expect from it, that made it even more memorable for us. It’s a nice way to relax, breathe some fresh air, and it’s the sort of place that people from all age groups can enjoy.

The Art of Digital

By Halah Gandeel

Digital Art is a general term for the use of digital technology in producing artwork. Latifah Rashed is a Saudi digital artist in her twenties from Hail. Passionate about her work, she shares with us her journey and what inspires her to create such wonderful and beautifully detailed cartoon characters that brings smiles to everyone’s faces. Q1: Tell us a bit about yourself. I am very interested in visual arts, illustrations and design. I also enjoy creating cartoon characters and short animated films. Q2: How did you start illustrating? Back when I used to paint, it felt somewhat like an operation to me. As soon as my brush touches the blank canvas, there is no going back. I have to live with my original idea and get it on the canvas from start to finish. Even though painting was a good way of using all my different colors and white space, it was 38 DESTINATION RIYADH

very costly and time consuming. However, when I entered the world of digital art, I quickly adapted to the change in speed and realized the differences, especially cost-wise. The production cost of my artwork kept decreasing. In addition, illustrating introduced me to thousands of new colors that I have never used, which therefore helped me work on more than one project per day. Q3: Did you take any illustration classes? I haven’t taken any illustration classes from professionals because I personally think self-teaching takes you further than merely acquiring information directly from professionals. Also, self-teaching developed my self-confidence and skills. Some of the things I have learned on my own are that meditation and nutrition for all visual arts help to widen your imagination and allows you to generate beautiful and innovative ideas.

Q4: What tools do you use to illustrate? Direct drawing using Wacom tablet on specialized programs for digital drawing, as well as drawing on my iPad. Q5: What inspires you to create your characters? My observation of God’s creatures is the source of my inspiration, the merging of all the small details, the lines and colors that God created inspires me to create beautiful things. Another source of inspiration for me are smiles, because of how comfortable, peaceful and content they make me feel. For that reason, I always aim to keep smiles on my characters’ faces when I draw them, because that will reflect on my audience and therefore reflect back on me. Q6: What difficulties did you face while creating your illustrations using digital art? As a digital artist, the challenge I face is competition. The world we live in today is rapidly changing and evolving, and the audience is becoming more and more impatient. For that reason, in order to stay in the scene, I need to constantly produce more work.

these ideas to a single series or character because I believe that this might cause a limitation in creativity to a certain point. However there will be more of these short animated films that convey innovative ideas. Q10: What programs did you use to create your animated films? Adobe programs and Final Cut pro. Q11: What are your future plans for your artwork? A collection of my latest work will be available in the near future. This collection, which includes the already completed “Lateefah Characters,” will be animated. In addition, I am hoping there will be a re-translation of my cartoon characters that could be useful for primary education in order to help children learn all the basic subjects via the iPad.

Q7: Did you participate in any galleries or competitions? A group of artists and I participated in painting the largest Islamic canvas of Allah’s 99 names in both Arabic and English. The painting was thankfully a success, and it entered the Guinness Book of World Records. Q8: What advice do you have for illustrating beginners? Find the appropriate method that you find suitable for yourself, because art is a way of expressing your feelings and emotions. Also focus on practicing, it plays a big role in perfecting your lines and shading. Q9: We’ve seen your animated short films; do you plan to create an animated series? Director Tahani Rahed and I produced these short animated films, which aim to have their own unique ideas, different from any content that is currently being produced and for it to be of an entertaining nature to convey the ideas in an indirect way. I prefer not to limit

The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East is considered one of the most thrilling and professional one-make series on the regional motor racing calendar. The championship was created to give the rising number of talented drivers in the region an opportunity to realize their racing potential while enhancing their personal circuit experience.

Currently in its fourth season, the championship features the region’s leading drivers, all competing in Porsche 911 GT3 Cup on the Middle East’s worldclass circuits in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Last month, rounds 7 and 8 of the challenge were held at Reem International circuit in Riyadh, hometown to the Saudi Falcon's team. We got a chance to chat with two leading champions from the talented team and learn more about this new and adrenaline raising sport. Faisal Saad Binladen, aka FBL Chief Executive Officer of the Saudi Falcons Profession: Civil Engineer Age: 27 Tell us a bit about Circuit racing. How did it become your dream to pursue it? FBL: Car racing has many styles or disciplines, one of them is circuit racing. It is the most accurate and technically challenging with the highest rate of consistency without mistakes. Therefore it requires perfection in every aspect.

Abdulaziz bin Turki al Faisal, aka ATF Red Bull athlete and "IWC" Friend of Brand Profession: Business Man Age: 29 After my first race in 2008, I noticed a lot of people who showed talent and had the potential to get into motor-racing sports. They deserve to be given a chance to represent their country, so I decided the way to do that was to establish a team and build a solid foundation, giving young talents a chance to rise. What are your rituals before a race? FBL: I always wear my suit, then my Balaclava (a knit cap for the head and neck) and walk around wishing drivers good luck, especially my team mates. Then I put on the HANS (a U shaped restraint to support the head and neck) and helmet. I keep my gloves off until I'm seated in the car. I wear my red gloves, putting on the right hand before left, then I pray before we start the formation lap. What would be your advice for motorsport lovers in KSA? FBL: Motor-sport is difďŹ cult, but if you've "got talent," you make yourself noticed and you must follow the right track. Please understand that public roads are the right place to learn the art of safe driving, while race tracks are where you learn to become future champions.

What would you say are the ABC’s of winning? ATF: Winning in motor racing does not break down to only speed and talent; it has to be supported with fitness, workout and most importantly TEAMwork. The driver is subjected to many physical challenges in the car. Endurance is key to maintaining consistency. A racer needs to take care of different aspects of his body like the neck which is subject to big pressure and high G-forces. Cardio workout is also very important. Commitment is key, throughout the season. Special diets, sleeping early and personal life management help in preserving the body and the mind. What are your future hopes for motorracing in Saudi? ATF: We would like to spread more awareness about the sport we love so passionately. We are trying to reach and educate the general youth. There are no manufacturers in the region, only private teams and individuals who love the sport. Raising exposure and gaining sponsorship are vital to pave the way to further develop the world of motor-sports in Saudi. Thankfully, many private companies are becoming interested in sponsoring both individual drivers and teams.

Fashion Passion

at MAISON BO-M

By Reham Saeed

On February 5th, creative expression surrounded Nujood Mall’s Maison Bo-M Gallery. Upon entering, viewers were immediately welcomed with music, lights, and art all around them! One of two events in the capital, Tanween Design Boutique’s Backstage Show featured the works of one artist, and selections from 23 designers from around the Middle East. According to a recent press release, “Maison Bo-M Galleries is the founder and organizer of Riyadh Fashion Days and is proud to have successfully launched Saudi designers in the region.” The works of the emerging talents, which ranged from fashion to jewelry to art, proved to be quite inspired and refreshingly original. Creations that stood out in particular were the accessories, namely the couture-like Turban line by accessories designer Bint Thani. According to Thani, lady-style turbans seem to be quite popular in Dubai and even abroad. Having not been in style since the 1920’s, this designer has managed to recreate the turban trend in a classier, updated fashion. Made from silk, tightened and wrapped into a rose bud, this headdress has been beautifully revamped into the 21st century. Lady turbans are practical for every woman. “It could be something for a lady who is fully covered. Or it could be something for a lady who just wears it as a trend,” says Thani. Match that turban with a must-have clutch from handbag designer extraordinaire, Alice Edde. Coming from her Miss E collection, these bags are coated in gloss, color, and are strikingly visually appealing. Purses so vibrant…they might pass as handheld works of art. Dresses ranged from jewel embroidered to something as simple as silk and a sash, including offerings with the elegance of designer Tanya. Artist Lina 42 DESTINATION RIYADH

Gazzaz proudly shared her paintings to reveal to Riyadh what inspires her. “What I hope for, is to open a new perspective, to broaden a person’s horizon,” she said. That’s what fashion and art is all about; opening minds, exploring how colors can come together into images, and imagining what stories they could tell you. Gazzaz is confident that she chose the perfect venue for such creative exposure. Maison Bo-M is considered to be Riyadh’s most unique venue for private viewings, book signings, art exhibitions, and creative workshops. Launched in February 5th, the Backstage and Bags & Shades exhibitions ran until the 25th. “When successful, it allows the audience to rethink their own fashion tastes, challenge perceptions, and develops the local industry. This event is a social initiative to allow members of the creative community to work hand in hand in presenting regional talent. With cities like Riyadh and Jeddah that hold a diverse range of talent, the industry has a bright future to develop and grow in the next few decades.” Location: Nojoud Center Tel: +966-1-2021205 Web: www.maisonbo-m.com

Al Qarya Al Najdiya The Najdi Village Restaurant By Layla

For the ultimate Saudi experience, a visit to the Najdi Village restaurant is a must. The restaurant, located on Abu Bakr Rd. opposite the Prince Sultan University, is a traditional Najdi style mud house. The building itself has many interesting details, and vividly displays the traditional Saudi lifestyle, decor and architecture. Guests will enjoy not only the delicious Saudi heritage cuisine, but the entire building and little details which make it almost like visiting a cultural museum. Stepping into the restaurant is like stepping back in time. Al Qarya Al Najdiya is divided into singles and family sections. The men’s entrance is lined with intriguing artifacts, colorful old doors, cooking utensils, Bedouin jewelry, spices and food items. Guests are led to an open-air courtyard typical to Najdi homes from back in the day when ventilation and light was provided through it. The courtyard is surrounded by the dining majlis and a watermill. The family entrance is from the side of the building, visitors pass by some antique cars on the way. Najdi style decorations, architecture and friendly waiters dressed in traditional Saudi attire welcome the visitors. 54 DESTINATION RIYADH

Guests are given the option to dine in an open area, tent-like rooms, or majlis (private rooms decorated to look like Najdi living rooms). There’s a watermill in the center of an openair courtyard which allows the natural light to enter during daytime and star gazing during the evenings. The majlis seatings are complete with air-conditioning and fireplaces. The tents are romantic, with lanterns hanging from the ceilings. No chairs or tables here; seating is on cushions on the floor and food is served from traditional plates placed on large straw mats. The restaurant is quiet during daytime but in the evenings and especially weekends it gets very busy and reservations are recommended.

The food is very tasty and reasonably priced allowing the visitors to order many different Najdi specialties. For groups of more than seven people the best way to sample all the different flavorful dishes is to order the elaborate set menu. It includes everything from various freshly baked breads, dips, salads, soups, chicken, vegetable, lamb and camel dishes, dessert and Arabic coffee, tea and dates. A meal with five dishes would cost around 100 riyals. Portion sizes are so generous that it’s enough for two individuals to eat a filling meal and still have some leftovers. Najdi Village is the best place to try unique and authentic Saudi dishes and of course camel meat! Recommended dishes here are the Jareesh (barley grain with yogurt and caramelized onions), Haneeni (wheat dough, dates, butter and milk), Marasiya (Saudi pancakes), and Mataziz (wheat dough pieces cooked with vegetables and meat). The chicken dishes are especially succulent and tender. On the menu you will also find some more "modern" Saudi foods such as chicken Kabsa. All meals include complimentary flatbread, Arabic coffee and dates. Although guests tend to eat using their hands, utensils are available for those not accustomed to eating the traditional Saudi way. The best indication that the food here is delicious is seeing how many Saudi families enjoy the Najdi Village restaurant. It doesn’t get more authentic than this! A WAY OF LIFE!

THE HOLY PROPHET’S GUIDANCE ON SPORTS “Teach your children swimming, archery and horse-riding.” -The Holy Prophet Mohammed

The Islamic religion is one of the religions that encourage all our senses; all are linked to each other and in a way complete one another. Islam urges Muslims to stay fit and healthy. Most of Islam’s rituals are based on two elements “Spiritual and Physical”, like: Prayer and Hajj, both have a great spiritual value that enhances our connection with God and a physical value that helps keep our body fit, another example is when the Profit used to walk to the mosques 5 times a day, which is a daily work out. That’s why our Profit Mohammed urged Muslims to be active, to teach their children how to be active and to combine their worship to God with simple activities that will benefit their health.

Here are some of the activities:

Running: It was stated by Ahmad Ibn Hanbal that the Prophet raced Aisha his wife and she outran him. Then he outran her, so he said, “This time makes up for the other.” Horsemanship and horse racing: It was reported that the Prophet participated in horse races from Al-Hafya to Thaniyyat AlWada, and for those who are training, from Thaniyyat Al-Wada to the mosque of Banu Zurayq (about 1 mile). Swimming: It is told that the Prophet said, “Let everyone among us swim towards his friend.” The Prophet swam towards Abu Bakir until he embraced him saying, “Here I am and my friend”, which proves that the Profit can swim very well.

ICONIC FIGURES Umar Ibn Al-Khattab Omar Ibn Al-Khattab also known as Al-Farooq “The Great” was born in Makkah. He was one of the powerful and most dominant Muslims that had ruled in Islam. He was best known for his justice, which earned him the title “Al-Farooq”. Omar came from a middle-class family and he became a merchant. Omar was 27 years old when he converted to Islam. At first he was against the Islamic religion and was in great shock to know that his sister and his brother in law had converted to Islam, however after his sister gave him a chapter of the Quran “Surat Ta Ha” to read, he was amazed by the verses and he converted to Islam. He then went to the Prophet Mohammed and announced his conversion to the Prophet and his companions. Omar was one of the people who truly loved the Prophet Mohammed to a limit where he couldn’t accept his death, however after the speech that Abu Bakir gave, which is “Whoever worshipped Muhammad, let them know that Muhammad has died, and whoever worshipped God, let them know that Allah is alive and never dies.” Omar broke down and accepted the death of The Prophet. After Abu Bakir has passed away, Omar accepted the position of being the Muslim’s new Caliph. Omar concentrated more on combining his power and political influence in the conquered land, rather than pursuing conquests. Omar Ibn Al-Khattab was stabbed to death in Madinah and was carried to his house, people were devastated by his death because he was one of the fairest rulers of Islam and he died defending the Islamic religion.

“BYZANTINE THE

By Mohammed Mirza

Suhayb Ibn Sinaan (RA) spent an early childhood in luxury and comfort as the son of the governor of Al Ulabah, a province in modern day Iraq. When he was a child, Suhayb (RA) went with his mother to the village of ath Thani for a picnic, but the Byzantine forces invaded the village and enslaved him.

He spent 20 years in slavery in Byzantine lands passing from the hands of one slave master to the next and finally ended up in Makkah. His final slave master was so impressed by his intelligence and sincerity that he set him free. Later on Suhayb (RA) became a trader and went on to become quite wealthy. He became known as Al Rumi due to his upbringing in the Byzantine lands and his blond hair. He accepted Islam in Makkah and when the idolatrous tribe of Quraish heard of his conversion, they began harassing and persecuting him. When he heard that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was emigrating to Madinah, he decided to emigrate with the Prophet, but remained unsuccessful in doing so as the Quraish foiled his plans and kept a close watch on him. However, one day he got ready on a mount and managed to escape, but soon his captors found out and ran behind him. Seeing them approach, Suhayb (RA)

“

Suhayb Al Rumi(R.A.)

clambered up a hill and said, "What would you say if I leave you my wealth? Would you get out of my way?" "Yes," they agreed. Suhayb (RA) described the place in his house in Makkah where he had left the money, and they permitted him to go. This exchange shows how much he cherished the prospect of being with the Prophet (PBUH) and having the freedom to worship Allah when compared to material wealth. When Umar (RA) was leading the prayer and he was stabbed by a Magian named Abu Lulu, he ordered that Suhayb (RA) should lead the prayer. Suhayb (RA) was given the honor of leading the prayer of the Muslim Ummah until the next Caliph was chosen. His appointment by Umar (RA) is one of the many examples of how well people from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures were integrated and honored in the early community of Islam.

You don’t need a lot of time, money or harsh chemicals to get radiant skin and healthy hair. Look for simple and natural alternatives to start looking your best.

• Banish dandruff by rubbing an egg yolk mixed with olive oil into your scalp.

• Kiwis can clenase and exfoliate – mash up a kiwi and use the pulp as a cleanser! (the seeds also give the mix its exfoliating properties)

• Puffy Eyes? Wake up tired eyes with a cool eye cream (just store yours in the fridge).

• Get rid of blackheads

• Whiten teeth by mixing

by rubbing a honey covered half of a lemon on your face.

• Strengthen hair with a mayonnaise mask

(its cholestorl pumps the cuticle!) Simply comb ½ cup of mayo through wet hair, wait 15 minutes and rinse with cool water. Shampoo as usual.

• Create a natural exfoliating lip scrub by 1 part brown sugar, 1 part honey and 1 part olive oil. Removing the dead skin off your lips will help your lip color to come on a lot smoother.

one tablespoon baking soda with three drops of hydrogen peroxide.

• Make your own makeup remover by

mixing olive oil with aloe vera water. The mixture is strong enough to take off even water-proof makeup!

• Avoid hair color from fading by avoiding shampoos the contain sulfates. Sulfates are a form of detergent that can fade color or make it brassy. • Tea Tree Oil has been used for centuries and is a great natural remedy to help deal with acne.

Eco Friendly Beauty Tips Making a few changes to your beauty regimen can make all the difference in the world for our planet.

Hair Did you know using blow driers creates carbon dioxide in the air? It would take 10 YEARS to absorb the carbon dioxide you generate from blow-drying 10 minutes a day for just one year! Reduce your drying time by first towel drying your hair to soak up access water, and then let the hair air dry till it’s almost dry. Not only will your blow drying time will be much quicker, the environment will thank you!

Skincare We don’t realize how many chemicals we apply to our skin daily. Read labels and make sure your soap is free of alphahydroxy acids. Alpha-hydroxy acids are harsh chemicals used to clear pores but also damage your skin’s UV protection. Look for all natural cleansers or try making your own cleansers at home using natural kitchen products. There are a ton of great recipes available online.

Makeup Be aware your lipsticks, foundations and concealers contain more on the bottom then you think. Be sure to scoop out a flatten lipstick which you think may be finished. Apply using a lip brush as there is literally another half of a lipstick there! Also use a spatula to access contents at the bottom of your cosmetics bottle or tubes.

Detoxification process is a naturopathic approach by naturopaths and naturopathic physicians where they advise their clients to detox to initially feel mentally, spiritually and physically lighter and better. There are several benefits of detoxification. Here are a few to list: • Weight loss and increase in metabolism (excellent for hypothyroidism). If you have hit a plateau in weight loss, detoxification process is an excellent kick-start to your system. • Increased vitality. • Significant improvement in bowel function (Colon cancer and rectal cancer are on-the-rise in KSA). • Glowing skin and the skin texture improves significantly. • Stronger immune system, greater sense of emotional and physical well-being. • Relief from migraines, headaches, fatigue and so much more! WHERE DO I BEGIN? Starting a detox program is when you are ready. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure or any other chronic illness, please detox under the supervision of a professional naturopath or experienced healthcare practitioner. The sample 3-day detox plan below along with rebuilding and rejuvenation phase can be followed by any healthy individual who has no health issues.

SAMPLE 7-DAY DETOX PHASE ALONG WITH REBUILDING AND REJUVENATION PHASE First phase is known as the “cleansing phase” where your intestinal organs along with other vital organs are cleansed. The diet consists of green juices and lots of water. It is vital that at least 3 litres of water is consumed through the day, apart from the green juices. There are two green juices that I am very fond of which are: Pineapple, spinach (a cup of pineapple, a cup of spinach, ¼ cup parsley, ½ teaspoon fresh ginger and water) Whole juice and lemon mint juice with fresh ginger. You can make your own “green combo” by adding your own preferred fruit such as citrus, pineapples, grapes, apples, raspberries and many more along with any vegetable or herb such as celery, broccoli, mint e.t.c. Have at least 2-3 glasses of this “green juice” every day in your cleansing phase along with water and nothing else. No sugar or artificial sugar is added. All kinds of sugar and salt are avoided as well. Vegetable broths without any carbohydrate vegetables can also be taken. * This can be for three days only. In the “rebuilding phase,” low fat foods, foods rich in fiber such as brown rice, fruits and vegetables are introduced. Fried foods, sugar and salt including meats are avoided. Broiled or baked fish is acceptable. You may have multivitamin supplements in both the stages. This is for at least two days or more, depending on the need. In the “rejuvenation phase,” a proper diet with fruits and vegetables along with light exercise (walking, jogging) is included and it is highly recommended to perform meditation. This is lifestyle modification. This sample diet will help you curb on your hunger pangs, make you feel lighter, healthier and more balanced “inside-out”. DESTINATION RIYADH 73
