Thoughts

to Ponder The Carpool Conundrum The beginning of the school year brings the usual issues: What time do the children need to be woken up? Do they have time for breakfast? Does everyone have their uniform ready? Where is that missing pencil case? Are we late again? The list can seem overwhelming…and if that’s not enough to drive you crazy, there’s also the actual drive to school to deal with! If you have a driver, the tempting choice is to just bundle your kids into the car every morning, wave ‘Bye-bye’, and breathe a huge sigh of relief that the morning madness has ended. If you don’t have a driver, then your husband has to drop the kids off, a mundane request about which he will roll his eyes and grudgingly accept as his daily duty. You can always arrange for a hired taxi to regularly perform the twice daily task if you can afford this additional expense and locate a trustworthy person for the care of your children. Or…you can organize a neighborhood carpool. Using Facebook or the school’s website to identify parents in your area, you can share the daily drive with two or three other families. Save time, gas, money – plus allow the children the opportunity to socialize on the way to school – problem solved!

KING ABDULLAH LAUNCHES AID CAMPAIGN FOR SOMALIA

King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, Custodian of the two Holy Mosques, launched a new charity campaign to aid the drought-stricken Somalian people. In addition to monetary funds, Jeddahwais are encouraged to donate provisions including sugar, flour, cooking oil, rice, dates, long-life milk and juices which are valid for one year as well as tents, covers, and clothes. People can also send medical solutions, medical supplies, drugs, and medical beds. The campaign was launched on the 22nd of August 2011 and has already raised an estimated SR 150 million! DJ thoroughly supports King Abdullah’s cause and encourages Jeddahawis to open their wallets in the name of hospitable giving.

Thumbs down to... KINDERGARTEN WITHOUT SAFETY

Schools where safety precautions and procedures are not in place especially for kindergarten sections. Playground equipment is broken, jagged edges are protruding out, soap (yes soap! or hand-wash gel) is missing from washbasins of toilets and the school canteen’s stock is not monitored regularly to ensure dangerous items for example small candies and toys are not sold to young children. In addition, all schools should install smoke alarms and ensure regular drills are carried out in case of an emergency. Emergency exits should be properly labeled. We request to the schools who are going to welcome back students this year, make sure that proper safety measures and regulations are implemented. After all, it is up to you to ensure that a safe, healthy environment for learning is created and maintained.

EID SA’EED

By Bassma Al Toaimi

As suggested in the name, Eid Al-Fitr means celebration of breaking the fast. This joyous holiday follows the blessed month of Ramadan, which we spent fasting and strengthening our spiritual and religious sides. The visibility of the new moon marks the last day of Ramadan, and the eve of Eid Al-Fitr. As soon as it is announced, people start celebrating and preparing for the first day of Eid, which falls on the first day of the month of Shawwal. Although not everyone spends their Eid doing the same things, there are some traditions that make Eid the joyous occasion it is for all of us. Eid Prayer: Although Eid prayer is not mandatory, the majority of Muslims start their first day of Eid by getting dressed up after Fajur prayer and going to pray at a mosque nearby with their families. There is something special about seeing the crowds get in line to pray, and hearing the Imam recite the Takbir (Allaho-Akbar, AllahoAkbar, La ilah-ella Alla, Allaho-Akbar, Allaho-Akbar, Wa Lillah Al Hamd). To a lot of people, that’s the wonderful beginning to their Eid. When asked what they feel while they are praying Eid prayer, most people said inner-peace and happiness, which are both feelings associated with this wonderful holiday. C

New Clothes: Shopaholics, this is an excuse for you to go wild! Wearing new clothes is a major part of Eid; it gives the day an extra special feeling. Shops are all packed, tailors are all busy taking orders for thobes and abayas, everyone is doing their Eid shopping! Men usually wear the traditional thobe, which comes in a range of modern and creative designs. Women have a wider variety of outfits to choose from, ranging from beautifully designed thobes to colorful dresses. Piece of advice: last minute shopping is not a good idea when it comes to Eid!

Breakfast: It has become a tradition for most families to have breakfast together on the first day of Eid. After thirty days of fasting, it feels special to have breakfast in the morning again, surrounded by all your family and loved ones. It has become a tradition and a custom to have dates before the main breakfast meal, which consists of local foods such as foul and the honey-sweet ma’asoub. Eideya: If we all dig deep in our memory bank when it comes to Eid, the word Eideya comes to our minds in big bold letters! Eid has always been about spreading joy, sharing feasts, and lots of candy, but mainly, handing out Eideya’s (small gifts of cash). Imagine standing in a line with all your cousins, nicely dressed in new clothes, and receiving Eideya from all your aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Eid wouldn’t be Eid without Eideya! Family and Friends Gatherings: Eid gathers people together, starting with the crowds at Eid prayer, till the gatherings and visits throughout the next three days. Families meet regularly with their relatives, extended family members, and friends. They catch up, share stories, sweets, and meals, and spread the joy they are feeling within. Houses are decorated with bright and festive lights, everyone is joyful, there’s a smile on every face, cheerful conversations, and the sound of laughter and happiness fills up every house. Sweets: During all three days of Eid, sweets, candies, and chocolates are found in every home, in every shop, and passed around at every social gathering. Otherwise known as Halawat Al Eid, passing out goodies has always been tradition. And although it is a simple gesture, it brings happiness to both children and grown-ups. DESTINATION JEDDAH 11

Jeddah’s Who’s Who

Lama Abdulaziz Al-Sulaiman: A Humble Woman with Bold Beliefs

By Nourah Al-Shubaily

Dr. Lama Al-Sulaiman is the Deputy Chairman at the Chamber of Commerce in Jeddah, an organization that assists the growth of the economy and the development of the business sector. Along with her job, she is a wife and a mother of 4. She has overcome many challenges throughout her life, but she views these challenges as opportunities which all helped mold her into the person she has become today.

Beginning with her decision to remain in Saudi Arabia for her studies, Dr. Al-Sulaiman acknowledges the difficulties in that bold move at a time when many Saudis were pursuing their education overseas, whether it was for high school or college. She feels that staying in Saudi was actually a blessing in disguise. She even got her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in London through an overseas student program which only required her to travel in order to present her research and sit for her exams.

Profile: Who: Lama Al-Sulaiman What: Deputy Chairman of the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce Qualifications: B.Sc. in Biochemistry, King Abdulaziz University, M.Sc. in Health and Nutrition and Ph.D. in Biochemical Nutrition, King’s College,The University of London Family: Married with four children: 3 sons ages 22, 18, and 12 and one girl age16 12 DESTINATION JEDDAH

“I studied all my life here in Saudi..but I have a part of my family that studied all their lives abroad. To come back and adapt to the culture is very difficult. They come in as strangers, not understanding the culture. Although I was not happy at an earlier age that I was not able to go and study abroad...but today, I tell you I was lucky; I understand the culture, I’ve lived with it.” She explains that, as a scientist, she never had the intention of becoming a businesswoman, let alone a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Her driving motivation was to help her country grow and prosper and to see her fellow countrymen achieve success in their chosen field. An avid, life-long philanthropist, when Dr. Al-Sulaiman heard that the Chamber was interested in having women participate, she thought, “Why not?” Over time, the women earned their own department

fear of losing some of their identities…but they can keep their identity.” I feel that the argument always stops at the most shallow issues, and this is, for me, the most challenging part…I think that the majority is ready to move into a better lifestyle. Saudis have the right to live a better lifestyle, bringing with them their traditions, bringing with them their identities.” Dr. Al-Sulaiman says that although she has seen a great improvement in the Saudi infrastructure, she hasn’t seen a great improvement in the Saudi person. Why? In her opinion, the Saudi person is still frustrated and confused. Her recommendations? 1. Create better, more organized companies for people to enter and find suitable job opportunities. within the Chamber and also focused attention on pressing business matters regarding women. Eventually, they became part of a board that has direct contact with decision-makers. Dr. Al-Sulaiman has full confidence that, today, the Saudi government supports women, but that there is still a big resistance group who do not support any change in the status quo because they are afraid of change. But in her opinion, this fear is ungrounded as equal participation will lead to a more successful environment for all businesspeople in Saudi Arabia. Very simply, she says, “Having women participate is actually going to become a point of pride for every family…you need to participate to prove that you are going to make an impact on society. Today, women are going to go and seek work…and I think their fathers and their guardians are going to support them. If my guardian, whoever he is, is ready to support me in whatever work environment I am in… no one else, except the law, can stop me from doing anything.” She elaborates by explaining that as a relatively young country, Saudi Arabia is one of the newest countries; only one hundred years old. “When you compare it to the rest of the world, like Europe and the United States, it is very young. Those countries have gone through an amazing evolution, but this has happened over time, of course. We cannot expect our country to change all at once. And in order for our country to change, we have to define change.” “Change is very important to define because we need to know what we are going to include in change. People who are resisting change [have a]

2. Organize public-sector companies with the right environment and regulations 3. Improve private sector companies in order to create better opportunities for people to come into the workforce. 4. Upgrade employees…people are lazy and have bad habits that have nothing to do with culture or traditions, but they blame it all on the environment, when majority of the problem is lifestyle. “My motto is that I need to first improve myself and I need to have the guts to change, even though people around me don’t want to change.” Dr. AlSulaiman is a determined woman who has proven that success is possible with this mind-set. Viewing every obstacle or challenge as an opportunity to better herself has led her to the pinnacles of power in a male-dominated world, yet she achieved all this without compromising her cultural traditions or femininity. “I think of all the failures I went through, they’ve actually taught me a lot…it is not where I reach, it is how I handle myself and what I do.” When asked for some words of wisdom for the youth of today, she said that asking her was ironic as she didn’t feel like she could connect with young people today, though she has lots of faith in them. Looking back on her life, she said, “Ask for recognition where recognition is due, but don’t expect it 24 hours because it’s not there 24 hours. And if you do not get it, don’t get frustrated. Don’t feel that there is no need try anymore because no one cares. Do it because you know IF you do it, even if no one cares, it will have an impact one day.” DESTINATION JEDDAH 13

Culture

Shock By Dilara Hafiz

Imagine arriving alone in a foreign country in order to attend university. Everything is new and unfamiliar; the language, the people, the money, the transport system. It may be the first time you’ve travelled on your own…but you’re not alone if you’re a Saudi student in the US, the UK, Canada, and a variety of other countries. The Saudi Arabian Cultural Bureau (SACB) is there to ease your transition from Saudi Arabia to your host country and ensure your academic and personal well-being. Cultural attache Professor Ghazi Al-Makki is at the helm of the SACB in the UK while Dr. Ahmad Turkistani is the Director with impressive qualifications in Mass Communications as well as years of experience as an Imam/Media Expert. Together they oversee the SACB with confidence and professionalism, guaranteeing the overseas students’ experience to be a successful one. King Abdullah Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, initiated two 5-Year plans to enable Saudi scholarship students the means to study abroad. Currently in the 2nd year of the 2nd 5-Year plan, there are now over 18,000 Saudi students registered with the SACB in the UK alone! Prior to embarking upon their chosen course of study, students attend a mandatory orientation program in KSA. This program provides invaluable information pertaining to banking, housing, social, and scholastic issues – basically it covers all aspects of studying abroad in order to ensure a successful experience. 24 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Orientation Program Highlights 1. Ensure academic success 2. Achieve psychological & social equilibrium through cultural education 3. Acknowledge rights & duties as a Saudi student as an ambassador – emphasize responsibility to religion & homeland 4. Equip students with basic skills of selfdevelopment & personal safety Saudi PhD student Hani Choudhry is currently at the University of Oxford. His impressive list of awards from 2011 is a testament to the heights which any dedicated student can reach with serious effort – great job Hani! Among 300 Young Researchers in Medicine, nominated by the University of Oxford and selected by the Nobel Laureate

Council, Lindau, Germany. The only Saudi Researcher and Student selected by the Nobel Laureate Council to participate in the prestigious 61st Meeting of Nobel Laureates of Physiology/Medicine, Lindau, Germany. Award, Best Postgraduate Student of the year 2010-2011, King Abdul-aziz University, KSA Award, Excellence in Scientific Research publication, King Abdul-aziz University, KSA.

I would really like to emphasize and encourage Saudi students who wish to apply to universities in the UK. Don’t be put off by universities like Oxford and Cambridge, thinking that they just accept people who are quote ‘genius’. I want Saudi students to apply to these prestigious universities because in doing so it gives you the opportunity to get in touch with a wider scope of the prominent and esteemed people in your intended career. This will dramatically increase your career prospects.

Here’s what he has to say about his studyabroad experience:

Dr. Hind Mohammed, a Saudi Arabian psychotherapist, has designed a program to help students cope with the culture shock of life outside of KSA. She works with the SACB in the UK and Ireland. Easing the transition by helping students understand the cultural pressures and dynamics of relating to their peers and professors, Dr. Mohammed is able to assist students in overcoming their sense of isolation and dislocation.

1. What led you to the UK for your studies? I had travelled to the UK previously on holidays and I liked the atmosphere and people were very friendly. I also wanted to finish my Master’s quickly. For a Masters it takes one year if you are on a full time course and 5 years for a PhD. As compared to the US and Canada and other foreign countries it takes 2 years and upto 7 years for a Masters and PhD. 2. What has been the best experience & the worst experience in your time in the UK? I didn’t specifically have any ‘worst’ experience. It was more homesickness for me. I had to cook, clean, manage my time and learn how to be totally independent. That was the main challenge for me. As far as cultural shock is concerned, I didn’t experience it. Here in Jeddah, we are so used to living within a multicultural society that it is easier to adapt anywhere else. My best experiences, however, are because I had a lot of support, thanks to SACB, I was always taken good care of and never had money issues, which is very important for a student. I got an offer to study at The University of Oxford and am in the process of completing my PhD. 3. What are your recommendations to other Saudi students considering university in the UK?

http://uksacb.org/‎

Study-Abroad Survival Tips 1. Select your course of study after serious thought and advice, not just because it sounds good. 2. Make sure your language skills are proficient; otherwise you’ll struggle in basic communication and comprehension in class. 3. Do you want to be in a city or out in the country? Small college or large university? 4. Accommodation is key to your happiness – rent or buy? Stay in a dorm or live with family/friends? 5. Weather can affect your mood; can you survive lots of snow or do you want sun? 6. Upon arrival, join clubs and get involved to beat home-sicknesses. Make friends! 7. Invest in a good international calling package or skype to keep in touch with your family. 8. Be true to yourself…enjoy your independence without forgetting your roots or your identity. LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT KINDERGARTEN?

By Noor Qamar Zaheer and Arisha Kidwai

Of the many decisions that parents make for the children, a daunting one is deciding on the right preschool for their child. A number of preschools have mushroomed in almost every district of Jeddah, each claiming to be better and different from the rest. So how do you select the right one for your child? There are many factors to consider. At what age do they accept students? What is the curriculum – is it in English or Arabic or a combination of the two? It can take some time to find the best launch pad for your child that will groom him/her into someone who is both socially and intellectually active. For parents who are new to all of this, here are a few essential tips that you need to keep in mind: Solid track record: Some parents prefer putting their children into a preschool which has at least 10 -15 years of experience with a proven track record. They have seen children of their friends or relatives studying there and are happy with the care, hygiene, safety & academic results. Kids Care and Up and Away are amongst the earliest preschools in Jeddah. Long-term: Other parents prefer putting their child into a preschool that continues on to Primary and Secondary Levels. Schools such as Jeddah Preparatory and Grammar School 26 DESTINATION JEDDAH

(www.jpgs.org) & Jeddah Knowledge (www.jks.edu.sa) fit this requirement with solid reputations throughout all levels of education. Montessori: Based on the philosophy of Dr. Marie Montessori which encourages independence at an early age, the Montessori method of teaching is very popular in the West. Bellz Montessori in Khaldiya District is one of the first Montessoris in Jeddah (montessori. bellz@gmail.com). Ambassadors is another Montessori school, Jeddah is their second branch, the first being in Riyadh. (www. ambassadors-schools.com)

Within Jeddah, there are a range of kindergarten schools available from schools that offer the British curriculum (Innovators Private School and Jack N Jill) to schools offering the American system of learning (ABC School). In addition there are some schools that start early (1 year for the KG-1 stage) (kids care and Jack N Jill) and some schools that will start from the age of two or three (Enchanted Garden). Intimate, Home-style: Still other parents send prefer putting their toddlers into schools that have a small, homey setup. They prefer the informal and direct access to the class teacher and principal over the more official approach prevalent in bigger establishments. For such parents, Bellz Montessori, Jack and Jill, Little Diamonds, and Building Blocks are a few of the schools they would be comfortable with. These are small establishments with good teacher - student ratios, easy access to the friendly staff etc.

Checklist: Teacher/Student Ratio? The best schools employ teacher’s assistants with no more than 10 students per teacher.

Potty Training? Does the school require your child to be out of diapers or will they assist with potty training?

Curriculum? Skim through the curriculum. Have a oneon-one chat with teachers to get an idea of what a typical class day is like. Clarify as many doubts you may have about classroom rules, play times, timetables, extra-curricular activities. Are there a satisfactory number of extra-curricular activities available?

Proximity? Is the school located near your home or too far away? It is usually more convenient if the school is nearby as it avoids the early morning rush and reduces the morning stress.

Imaginative Playtime? Playground equipment should be safe and inspire imagination, social development and creativity. Healthy Menu? Do they serve food in the cafeteria? What type of food is available? Are there any healthy choices? Does the school care about general hygiene?

Early Bird/Late Bird? Does the school have flexible hours – very important if you’re a working mother with long days. Also essential for those occasional times when your driver is needed in two places at once. Tuition? Can you afford the pre-school? Do they charge monthly or by the term? Some schools have a flexible drop-in policy so you’re not locked into a rigid routine.

It’s Back to School Again… A Parent’s Survival Guide By: Noor Qamar Zaheer

“Come on – hurry up or you will miss the bus! Have you brushed your teeth? Did you polish your shoes? What do you mean ‘I don’t have a sharpener’? Where are your socks?” Sound familiar? The end of Ramadan and Eid signals the end of the holiday season and that can only mean one thing for parents of school-going kids: It’s time to get back to the school routine! For a stress-free life, it helps to plan ahead in order to avoid yelling yourself hoarse on the first day of school. Every parent can relate to the stressful initial early morning wake-up, mad dash to ensure school supplies and uniform are in order, and general level of tension and anxiety which accompanies the first day. To make sure that you are calm and cool, here are a few tips that you can use as a checklist to avoid those last-minute rushes, disappointments, and a sore throat!

28 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Plan early. Early planning is the Holy Grail to achieving a stress-free morning on a school day. Don’t leave purchasing uniforms, stationary, lunchboxes, books and shoes till the last-minute. Trust me, from a personal point of view, it helps your nerves to finish all your shopping a few weeks in advance.

Make sure that your child knows emergency contact numbers or label it on his/her pencil case. Inform the class teacher about allergies or any other health issues.

Early to bed…early to rise. During Ramadan and Eid in Jeddah, we tend to get used to sleeping early in the morning and waking up late in the afternoon. A week before school starts; try changing your biological clock to sleeping at night and waking up early in the morning. Kids need 8-10 hours of sleep in order to wake-up feeling happy and refreshed.

Don’t let your child skip breakfast. A healthy breakfast can give your child the essential energy he/she needs to stay up and running the whole day. Statistics show that children who avoid breakfast are more susceptible to obesity and have the reaction levels of a 70 year-old by the end of the morning!

Double check the times of pick-up and drop with the bus driver a couple of days before school starts. Or time yourself if you’re driving them to school – allow for road construction, traffic, and random acts of nature which can all conspire to make you late. Always leave yourself a cushion of 5 minutes – better early than late! Make sure that all immunizations and physical exams are completed before the first day of school.

Lunches should be packed the night before. You won’t have time in the morning, despite your best intentions.

Make sure backpacks are packed and ready to go. If your child has homework, check that it is completed the night before… and put into the backpack. We’ve all received that panicked phone call “Mom – can you please bring me my homework – I left it on my desk!” Iron and layout uniforms the night before – boring, but necessary.

Label, Label, Label! All items (sharpeners, erasers, books, etc) that have to be taken to school need to be labeled. Children lose things very quickly – avoid the confusion and blame game by helping your child identify their own possessions easily with clear labels. DESTINATION DESTINATION JEDDAH JEDDAH 29

MeeM Jewelry Design by Mariam Polding By Nourah Al-Shubaily

“Meem is you, meem is me, meem is each and every one of us. Meem is about self-expression, love and beauty. Meem is you, meem is me.” Meem is a new accessory line created by designer Mariam Polding. Under this new line of accessories are the Meem Zodiac Spring-Summer 2011 Collection, and the Ramadan Subha Collection. The Zodiac Collection is a new line of bracelets, and the Ramadan Subha Collection is a new line of Subhas made with a twist. All the designs are made with semi-precious stones and 925 sterling silver, plated with 18-carat Italian gold. All of the bracelets are carefully researched and arranged in a specific manner in order to enhance the natural energy of each zodiac sign. You can buy them ready-to-go, or pick out the stones and charms yourself, and design your own for you or a friend! Mariam has also come up with a great way to welcome new babies into the world with matching mother-daughter or mother-son bracelets, each with the new baby’s zodiac sign. This is a great idea for Mubaraka’s! The Subha Collection is also one of a kind. Meem’s subha’s have been designed to wrap around your wrist 34 DESTINATION JEDDAH

and fit onto them just like a bracelet. They’re also adjustable, so whether your wrist is large or petite, there’s no need to worry. When you are not using them, you can wear them! A perfect gift for Eid. When speaking to Mariam, you can immediately tell her work means a lot to her. Mariam had always been fascinated with jewelry design, and she wanted to create pieces in which the components alone were special, and together were special. Mariam took jewelry courses in Cairo and in London, and first began making jewelry for herself. Later, when some of her friends got a glimpse of her work, they asked her to make them pieces as well. This eventually led Mariam to finally create her official line of jewelry: MeeM. Mariam would like to thank Sofana Dahlan and Yolanda Perez for all their help. To get your very own Meem jewelry, head on over to Sawani in the Red Sea Mall! For more information, visit the Facebook fan page, MeeM, and become a fan, or visit www.tashkeil.com/mariampolding.

MAISON Bo-M INTRODUCES

SAAD BIN MOHAMMAD By: Noor Qamar Zaheer

Maison Bo-M celebrated the intriguing artworks of renowned Saudi writer and artist, Saad Bin Mohammad, with an exhibition titled ‘THE UNREALISED DARAWISH & RESURRECTION’ With a number of pieces on display, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the mind of the artist and his insight into the cycle of life. Although Saad bin Mohammad has moved in art circles for the past 20 years, he first showcased some of his paintings at the Young Saudi Artist Exhibition in February earlier this year. Within the exhibition, the piece titled ‘The Witness Who Never Forgot’ caused a stir within Jeddah’s artistic community. The piece commemorated the Jeddah floods in 2009 and the disastrous impact it left on Jeddah’s thriving community. Currently on display at Maison Bo-M, the painting titled ‘Resurrection’ explores the immensely debated and controversial fate of the human cycle. Does such an episode necessitate the event of mortal death or merely celebrate the opening and closing chapter of the travelling soul?

Sand Darawish ‘Resurrection’ is about the dawn of a new beginning in the chapter of human life. Another piece, the ‘Sand Darawish,’ in Saad’s words, “Art is meant to disturb, and Science to reassure.” It attempts to explore the power of an artist whose glory inspires movement. The Darawish can represent anything from a moment in time, a state of mind or simply can refer to the cycle of life.Check out these Resurrection mesmerizing pieces of artworks by this famed Saudi artist for yourself. The exhibition is open to the public till the 15th of September 2011. DESTINATION JEDDAH 35

Flavors; Young Chefs Take to the Stove By: Noor Qamar Zaheer Photography by: Silwan Eshki

Sana Hussain Al-Fatani was living a normal life like any other Saudi housewife, but in her spare time, she taught her 10-year-old daughter, Ayah, how to cook simple, everyday recipes. That’s how the idea of Flavors came to mind. “She inspired me to start this,” she says with a smile flickering around her lips and motioning to the kitchen she built in her front yard. The idea became a reality in the beginning of 2011 when Sana hired builders to construct the kitchen. Upon completion, she gathered an enthusiastic bunch of 10 children (girls and boys) who were interested in learning how to cook. The classes take place three times a week for 9-11 year-olds. DJ observed Chef Sana teaching her class how to make a hamburger. The kids were all set with their customized gear of chef’s caps and aprons. “Cleanliness and safety are both very important,” Sana stresses as she passes 36 DESTINATION JEDDAH

a box of gloves to all the children. Meanwhile she adds spices, salt and pepper to mincemeat and passes an individual bowl of mincemeat to each child. “Mix! Mix! Mix!” she chuckles enthusiastically as she goes around surveying each child in action. “I have learnt how to make crepes, pancakes, fettuccini and chocolate tarts,” Jana, a budding chef, proudly explains. With her positive attitude, lively personality, and passion for cooking and teaching, Sana plans to continue her cooking school throughout the year. When she is not teaching children, Chef Sana likes to teach and share her experiences with young girls about to get married, how to cook easy, simple everyday meals that are bound to please the in-laws. At the end of the day, the children tuck into their own hand-made hamburgers. “How is it?” Chef Sana asks.’”Delicious!” they all exclaim in unison.

Keeping the Dream Alive:

Imaging for the future

Photography & Text By Hans Sjoeholn

Underwater photography today has become commonplace. Prices are coming down dramatically and the size of the technology is shrinking. The improvements in technology have come despite the many engineering and physics challenges of image capture in the underwater environment. This type of photography was once prohibitively expensive and practiced only by professionals and only the most diehard enthusiasts. Today it has become wide-spread and dare I say ubiquitous. Information sharing was once challenging and expensive. If you wanted to share images with others you had to send physical copies through conventional media channels, or hold functions in photography galleries and wait for visitors to come to you. The internet and particularly social media websites have transformed image sharing, making it free and easy. Today Facebook is the largest image sharing website on the internet and is used by millions on a daily basis. Ironically, but perhaps fortuitously, these changes have coincided with the steady 50 DESTINATION JEDDAH

decline of marine ecosystems. Scientists are warning of eminent marine massextinctions and ecosystem collapses worldwide unless concerted action takes place to reduce the pressures human activity are having on our delicate seas. Underwater photographers can help in this effort by raising awareness of the plight of the seas and increasing appreciation of the many treasures we might lose if marine ecosystems decline further. The reality is that on a global scale only 1% of the ocean is protected. View this interactive world map and click on our area to see what is being done in our region. Arabian Seas Region www. protectplanetocean.org The International Programme on the State of the Ocean has revealed shocking news that the extinction of the world oceans is imminent. Log on to www.stateoftheocean.org and view the interactive Graphic “The Earth System. Pollution, habitat destruction of seabed communities and overfishing are major threats to any sea. Climate change with temperature elevation is yet another. What is the solution? Education and awareness is a critical factor to change the minds of individuals and decision makers. Images have the power to change

perspectives and influence conservation, awareness and appreciation in a spirit to prevent the coming of a sad future when only images from a healthy living ocean survive. For the privileged visitor, scuba diving can be a life changing experience that will deepen our connection with nature and help us to understand the immediate need to preserve this dreamlike wilderness. I encourage everyone to celebrate the life and light that brings so many scuba divers peace of mind. I encourage them to reflect on the astounding quality of the underwater world and ask themselves seriously if they could accept losing this beauty forever. Individual action should also complement collective action. We must each do our bit to be a part of the solution. Ideally, the only things to bring home from your underwater excursions are living memories, images of favorite sea creatures, peace of mind and friendships. With this approach there is a greater chance that you will be able to repeatedly return to this peaceful domain for more positive encounters with living creatures. We often feel that our individual impact on the vast oceans is negligible, but this is faulty logic. One individual can do more harm than they realize. Keeping mega fauna such as a 40 year old Napoleon fish alive is something you can achieve. Limit your use of plastic, every year tens of thousands of seabirds, sea turtles, and marine mammals drown or starve due to entanglement in marine debris, over half of 52 DESTINATION JEDDAH

which is from plastic. Start bringing your own bag to the grocery store. Think of the positive impact these small steps would have - sea tourism operators lose out when the marine environment declines. Reef destruction and the collection of endangered species is like museum vandalism. Overharvesting marine resources and polluting the seas is like stealing from ourselves. The oceans belong to us all, and their health is our collective responsibility – we can’t live or exist without them. The generous ocean feeds us and keeps our air healthy and breathable. The ocean is one of the main factors in absorption of harmful carbon dioxide and the production of life sustaining oxygen. More than fifty percent of the planet’s oxygen is produced from the seas.

September 17th is the Annual International Beach Cleanup Day; make it a family event by involving children and teach them that the ocean is not infinite. Breakfast inJeddah

We don’t know about you, but now that Ramadan is over, the first thing we crave is breakfast… in the sunlight! There is something very uplifting about the aroma of coffee and orange juice in the morning, and now is a perfect time to hit the town and enjoy the most important meal of the day. Whether you yearn for pancakes, bacon and eggs or a more traditional Arabian way to start your morning, Jeddah is bursting with places to treat yourself and your family at any budget.

Casper & Gambini’s

Known more for attracting business executives with their fresh salads, wraps, sandwiches and relaxed yet intimate ambiance, Casper & Gambinis’s offers a variety of breakfast plates in a rustic environment. Go early and sit by the huge window that overlooks Andalus Road…the sunshine seeping through is bright enough to lift anyone’s spirits. Andalus Road, Hamra Dist. 699 5911

Teayana

Whether you opt for the Branch in Attalah Center on the Corniche, or the one in AlHamra, the focus will be on, as the name suggests, high quality tea. The no-smoking rule preserves the integrity of the brewing. Don’t miss a piping hot pot of Moroccan Tea with freshly made mana’ish. Great for brunch as they offer hot sandwiches and even bagels too. Enjoy the view and bask in the morning sun...lovely! Al Hamra, 6681660 Al Kahldiya , 6062646 Cornich 2368220, Red Sea Mall 21560620

Delifrance

Ahhh, baguettes, baguettes and more baguettes! Possibly the best quality French baked goods available in Jeddah. Generally, our humid weather is not ideal for creating such goodies, yet magically, Delifrance offers premium breads and pastries. If you can catch their English Breakfast which consists of jams, butter, a cheese omelet , sausages, beans, bread, orange juice & tea/or coffee, then you are in for a treat. With a branch in Attalah Center, the Corniche, Malik Road, and Prince Sultan Street , you’re bound to find one convenient for you. Attalah Center, Al-Shati 699-7861, Andalus Mall 630-3672 , Al-Salama Center, 256-7196

Le Croissant Shop

For years this was the one-stop shop for breakfast in Jeddah, specializing in croissants, muffins and other pastries. Also, they offer delicious “croissandwiches” which have become a favorite for many Jeddahwis. Whether you are on your way to Obhur for a weekend at one of the many chalets, or running late to the office, bringing along take-out from Le Croissant Shop is a sure-fire way to put a smile on everyone’s faces! Malik Road, Al-Shati Dist, 6222861

Berts

One of the more modern places to open up, Bert’s is known for offering healthier choices. It’s great that we now have this option! Breakfast starts at 8am and offers items such as a “fat-burning smoothie” or an “all egg-white omelet.” Located conveniently at Rawda Star, and with another branch at the swanky Stars Avenue Mall, it’s away from the hustle and bustle of Tahlia, yet perfect to pop in after a morning of shopping. With its contemporary décor, Berts is a relaxing and healthy way to start your day. Rawda Street, Rawda Dist, 6606633

Habsburg, Rosewood

Overlooking the Red Sea, the Habsburg is a modern, stylish restaurant located at the Rosewood Hotel in the northern part of Jeddah’s Corniche. Very upscale, their breakfast is served between 6am (for you early birds) to 10:30am. Some of you might want to pull an infamous all-nighter in order to be accommodated - very common thing to do among us Jeddahwis. Habsburg offers a wide selection of local and international cuisine and is known as the “Best Friday Brunch in Jeddah.” With its view of the Corniche, and unusual menu items, that title is well-deserved. A great place to treat those who are special to you . Corniche Road, Al-Shati Dist, 2570967

Al-Nawras, Movenpick

Like a secluded island, Al-Nawras located at Al-Wadaa on the Corniche, offers an impressive Breakfast Buffet with many favorite selections. Movenpick, which is well-known for its quality and for abiding by Swiss high standards, will not disappoint here. Reserve a table by the window and enjoy freshly baked pastries, cold-cuts, and croissants while surrounded by the sea. Although only available on Thursdays and Fridays, you will feel more like dining al fresco in Europe. The place is definitely worth the experience. Corniche Road, Al-Shati Dist, 6555550

BalsamicoToo

The new branch on Malik Road offers items not available at the previous one, including some breakfast items. If possible, try and get a seat on the roof where the seating area is surrounded by glass and a panoramic view of one of Jeddah’s most pristine roads. Dishes to sample include frittatas, omelets, and a few local favorites. Overall a serene atmosphere, where one can enjoy nargila with their breakfast. Fuddruckers

Probably the largest chain on this list, Fuddruckers boasts the World’s Greatest Hamburgers, and with their fresh and high quality ingredients, they do not disappoint. Get there early enough and enjoy the hearty and generous American breakfast. We recommend the filling Steak and Eggs, or, if steak for breakfast is not your thing, they’ve got French Toast, pancakes, omelets - all complete with a side of sausage or bacon strips. We’ve known people who have filled up on breakfast and then stay long enough until they were ordering lunch! (Their burgers are irresistible!). Great for families as the kids can release pent up energy at their play ground while you enjoy your meal. Branches scattered all over Jeddah, so you’re bound to find one close by. American Corner

For almost 20 years American Corner has been a staple in Jeddah for many expatriates and locals alike. Still a little “hole-in-the-wall” located at Khaledeyah Shopping Center, it is renowned for its authentic American Breakfast selections. Newly re-vamped, it now feels like an authentic, old fashioned diner complete with brick walls and high ceilings. American Corner is a small place with big portions. Stacks of pancakes and waffles swimming in maple syrup, western omelets, sandwiches, fresh orange juice and brewed coffee; their scents and flavors scream the United States! With a new, larger branch opening soon on Prince Sultan Street, their expansion is something that the residents of Jeddah have been awaiting for many, many years. Khaldia, Rawda Dist, 6060188

Sweet & Savory

Revolutionizing Cupcakes in Saudi Arabia Sweet and Savory, a small shop located on Sari Street, opened its doors with the goal to redefine the stereotypical cupcake taste of sweetness and introduce a new concept in the cupcake revolution: cupcakes can also be savory! The idea was hatched in Fatima Qadi’s household kitchen. As word spread, what started out as a dinner party favorite quickly became a booming business venture with orders coming in from everywhere. In the face of overwhelmingly high demand, with the support of her husband and partner Faisal Alzamil, they both decided to open their own bakery that will cater to the rising customer demand and increased popularity of their cupcakes. A quick glimpse at the menu tempts you with a number of new choices that I guarantee you will not have tried before. White Cheese and Dill, Chilli and Onion, Jalapeno and Cheese, Pizza, Vegetable, Pesto and Peanuts are just a small selection from the savory variety available. While amongst the sweet variety the Cardamom, Peanut Butter, Caramel Apple, Ginger and Pistachio are all scrumptious. Each cupcake is unique with an identity of its own. They are sure to intrigue the palette and tantalize your taste buds. Seasonal specialities inspired by Saudi favorites are available for a limited time. They include Kunafa, Dates, Klaija, and Ma’soob cupcakes. These original creations have already received rave 62 DESTINATION JEDDAH

A CUPCAKE REVIEW GOODIES

Goodies were the first ever shop catering specially to baking cup-cakes. Sadly, this time round, they scored well below our standard expectations. Chocolate cupcakes that are dry with purple frosting on top? Vanilla cupcakes that resemble and taste like a brick? Let’s just say that we were sadly disappointed.

Eid Around The World By Habib Shaikh

Eid Al-Fitr (Festival of breaking the fast) comes after the end of the holy month of Ramadan during which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, spend the month in prayers, recite the Quran as much as possible, engage in charity, help the less fortunate and thank Allah (swt) for all His favors, and helping them fulfill their religious and spiritual obligations. Eid is not a self-centered celebration, but encompasses the individual, the community and the society in goodwill, good work, responsibility, charity, including zakat (the poor due), Fitra and well-being. It is an elevating experience and a period of happiness, joy, and entertainment. In the time of the Prophet (pbuh), Muslims used to celebrate Eid by playing and watching others play. In most parts of the Islamic world, Muslims give each other small gifts and wear new clothes, children receive money from their parents, relatives and older friends, special feasts are held, and desserts adorn the table for days while families and friends reunite.

72 DESTINATION JEDDAH

In South Asia, festivities begin on the night before Eid, known as the chand raat or the night of the moon, in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Females, particularly younger girls, decorate their palms with mehndi (henna), buy glass bangles, and dance to traditional music.

In Malaysia it is called Hari Raya Idul Fitri, which means The Great Day of Celebration. Muslims ask for forgiveness when they meet each other saying “Maaf Zahir dan Batin” which means “forgive me for all wrong doings”. Malaysians organize “open house”, a local tradition of opening the house to neighbours. Muslims, Chinese, Indians and sometimes foreigners too join in the open houses to have a nice meal, enjoy the local pastries and traditional food. Muslims visit the house of the parents first then the rest of the family. Kids receive money called “Duit Raya” given by parents, grandparents and uncles carefully folded and inserted in small, colorful envelopes. In Indonesia the feast is also called Hari

Raya Idul Fitri. It is common to greet people with “Selamat Hari Raya” (Indonesian) or “Salam Eidul Fitri” (Malay) which means “Happy Eid.” Muslims also greet one another with “Mohon maaf lahir dan batin” which means “Forgive my physical and emotional wrongdoings.” On the night of the last day of Ramadan, Indonesians usually do ‘Takbiran,’ which is a big celebration where people, from little children to old men, recite the takbir with a microphone in a parade. They travel around the town and usually they beat the ‘beduk,’ a large drum, with a stick as a background music.

In Durban KwaZulu Natal,

the men visit the graves of the deceased. Everybody goes for Eid prayer, after the ritual bath and the donning of new clothes. Amongst the children there is great excitement as they eagerly await their gifts. If they have fasted for the first time for the entire month, their efforts are acknowledged with extraordinary attention and gifts. Families in Johannesburg

and

Durban get together for a breakfast of roast chicken and lamb, biryani, sweet meats, Eid milk and many other

delicacies. The Capetonians on the other hand have a breakfast with tea and freshly baked jam and coconut tarts. Their lunch, comprising of biryani or chicken curry and rice, roast lamb potatoes and sweet yellow rice, is taken before or after Zuhr Prayer. Platters of food are distributed to neighbors and friends, particularly other religious groups, who eagerly await the Muslim fare. It is a common practice to visit the bereaved families who have lost loved ones to offer them solace and support. Tea is usually taken after Asr Prayer followed by a barbecue for the evening meal. DESTINATION JEDDAH 73

In Nigeria gun bursts herald the end of

fasting. Eid provides an opportunity for a get together at a larger communal level, which starts immediately at the end of the Eid prayer. At a family and general society level, the period provides for an opportunity to exchange visits and pleasantries and a forum of traditional ceremonies such as wrestling, horse racing and different sorts of entertainment depending on the area, and economic and social circumstances of the time in question. For many Islamic centres in

America the biggest challenge

Eid Al-Fitr is an important Islamic holiday for Muslim

communities across Australia. Sheer khurma (a dish of dates cooked in milk) is usually eaten in the morning of Eid. Many Muslims dress in their finest clothes and adorn their homes with lights and other decorations. Old wrongs are forgiven and money is given to the poor. Special foods are prepared and friends or relatives are invited to share the feast. Gifts and greeting cards are exchanged and children receive presents.

Philippines has recognized Eid

Al-Fitr as a regular holiday by virtue of Republic Act No. 9177 and signed on November 13, 2002. The law was enacted in deference to the Filipino Muslim community and to promote peace among major religions in the Philippines. The first public holiday was set on December 6, 2002.

74 DESTINATION JEDDAH

is finding the appropriate place for the community members to conduct the early morning prayers. As families pour in from different directions, many of the mosques fall quite short of accommodating a space vast enough to absorb the worshippers. The challenge is especially greater for the smaller centres which are located within residential houses and are structurally incapable of hosting all the congregants. So, they rent a banquet hall big enough for the prayer.

September Travels

Perfect Weather Low Prices No Crowds

What are You Waiting For?

If you feel like you need a vacation from your vacation – you’re not alone. Statistics show that a majority of people feel MORE stressed after returning from an overseas holiday! They dread the credit cards bills flooding in the following month, plus they have to catch up on work at the office and chores at home, so it’s no wonder that the Eid holiday may seem like the perfect chance to actually enjoy a short-break after the marathon summer vacation. If you only have one week to spare, you can find plenty of destinations which are close to home, yet still offer lovely weather and off-season price savings.

European

destinations like England, France, Greece, Italy and Spain are top choices for a civilized, city tour or a relaxing week in the rural countryside. Search out last-minute deals for a spontaneous vacation which will recharge your batteries.

European Beach destinations in

September include Cyprus, Crete, Sardinia, and Malta, the beaches will be free of schoolage children and hordes of holiday-makers.

Week long cruises are wonderful ways to unwind from a hectic summer – select from Mediterranean or Middle East itineraries.

If you can get away for two weeks, then you have the time to travel further afield.

The North-East coast of America offers cool weather and amazing fall foliage. Don’t miss Maine, New Hampshire, or Connecticut for a relaxing, scenic driving tour of the region.

The sun is always shining in California! Enjoy the theme parks free from school-age children.

Avoid popular Caribbean destinations and Florida as September is hurricane season! If you yearn to lie on a beach, then select Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago, or Aruba for good weath.

South-East Asia is closer than you think,

and September is less humid and hot than the summer months. Try Singapore, Manila, Bangkok or Jakarta for an exotic, short break. 76 DESTINATION JEDDAH

IT’S TIME TO GET MOVING! By Nourah Al-Shubaily

The moment we’ve all been waiting for is finally here… Eid! A time for family, a time for celebration, and also a time to get yourself moving! Ramadan has been a wonderful month of love and laughter, but it’s also been a month of indulgence. But have no fear, DJ is here with some great methods that are probably easier, more fun, and more efficient than just you and your love handles heading to the nearest gym and hopping on a treadmill.

Many people believe that being fit or staying healthy means an endless amount of exercise and one cucumber a day for the rest of your life. Not true. Being healthy or getting healthy does not have to be so constricting or so boring. The key to successful fitness and health is making your exercise regime fun and taking small steps towards a healthier overall diet. We are going to start by telling you that you can head to the gym, but it’s not the gym that you’re thinking of… we are going to show you the other side of the gym.

Creative Classes Personal Trainer

For those on the shyer side, consider getting a personal trainer. You can ask your gym if they have trainers available, or search out an independent trainer. The great thing about a one-on-one workout is that the trainer can compose a workout specifically for your body, so you can focus on areas that may need more attention than others. They can also help you make sure that you are doing the moves exactly as they should be done. Not only will this help you get fit more quickly, it will also prevent unnecessary injury. Personal trainers also vary in their skill, which means you can get a trainer for almost any type of exercise you feel you would like to try. Personal Trainers sometimes offer their classes at their homes for a small number of people. This is a good opportunity for you to get fit with a friend in private!

Gym Alternatives

Now, if you’re thinking, “This all sounds lovely, but I’m still not sure,” not to worry, because there’s more! If you don’t consider yourself the “gym exercise-type”, don’t shut the door on your health just yet. Jeddah offers lots of different places for your everyday activities. Taking a stroll is a great, simple way to get your body moving. Take a walk along the Corniche, the Mamsha behind the Hilton, or even your neighborhood park. Too hot for you outside? Head over to a mall. Malls in Jeddah are large and spacious, and most importantly, air-conditioned, so you won’t have to worry about the heat. Head over to a near-by mall for a quick stroll, or to the Red Sea Mall or Mall of Arabia for a longer one. Be sure to wear proper footwear: socks and walking shoes. This will make your walk easier, more comfortable, and prevent unnecessary strain on your body.

Home Gym

Most gyms offer several different ways to stay in shape. One great way to stay fit is by attending an exercise class. Classes are a great way to stay in shape and have fun. The nice thing about classes is that you can go into the class not knowing anything, and come out with more knowledge and a fitter backside! An instructor guides you through the entire exercise, so there’s no need to think or plan ahead. Plus, being surrounded by other fitness-conscious people makes the class more fun and makes you more motivated. Gyms offer all different types of classes, from dancing and Tae-Bo, to Yoga and Pilates. There are also more advanced classes for those who have been exercising for some time and want more of a challenge. And the best part of all, most of these classes are included in your membership, so there’s no extra fee!

Can’t be bothered to leave your house to exercise? No problem! Pop in an exercise dvd. Virgin Megastore, in the Roshana Mall, offers a variety of different exercise dvds including all your favorites like Yoga, Pilates, Aerobics and many more. These are a great way to stay fit, and they’re so convenient. You can do these at any time and from the comfort of your own home. Add wrist or ankle weights to up the calorie expenditure, or better yet, invest in a beginner set of free weights and create your own workout regimen in the privacy of your home. So, no matter what you get up to this Eid, whether it’s jogging at a gym or simply playing with the kids, be sure to get that body moving!

THE Hilton Hosts Recycling

The Hilton Hotel hosted a recycling competition by the name Blue Energy in an effort to raise awareness about the environment and highlight the different ways by which everyday items like soda cans, paper and glass bottles can be recycled and converted into works of art. The event showcased a number of recycled items that were converted into different art works. Soda cans were converted into sculptures and glass bottles were cleverly arranged and wired to produce lanterns and lamps. The event was organized by Ms. Ghada Omar Alamdar, Marketing manager of the Hilton Hotel and attended by a number of dignitaries including Ms. Majida Aburas, Deputy Executive of the Saudi Environmental Society and Mr. Sheikh Ali Bin Hais, manager, director and owner of the Jeddah/Medina Hilton Hotels.

Art works were produced and judged based on three categories: culture, fashion and paintings. Pieces included paintings made from onion and garlic peels, Art works included dresses made from recycled cloth and magazine pages, airplanes made from tin soda cans, curtains made from straw and a number of interesting items showcased by Jeddah’s talented population of artists. ‘In today’s world, with dwindling resources, there should be more ways to recycle.’ Ms. Ghada Omar Alamdar, organizer of event was quoted as saying, ‘More waste is thrown out than re-used. Saudi Arabia produces 16 million tons of garbage per year, with each Saudi producing an average of 10.4 kilograms of waste per day. Recycling one ton of paper saves enough energy to power an average Jeddah home for 6 months.’ The evening ended with a special prize distribution ceremony in which trophies and prizes were awarded to the best pieces in each of the categories and to the runners-up winners. At the end of the evening was a special Saudi Dance celebration and dinner to conclude the event. The art works were later on display in the lobby of the Hilton Hotel throughout the month of Ramadan and visitors can add their suggestions and give their feedback and views.

K O O B IEW REV UGLY BETTY Betty Suarez is smart, sweet and hard working. The only problem is that she’s not thin and beautiful like all her coworkers at Mode, the high-fashion magazine where she works. The only reason the publisher hired her to be his son’s secretary, is that he thought Betty was someone who Daniel would never like. She helps him find his way through the shark infested waters of the fashion industry.

For One More Day By: Mitch Albom

Best-selling author Mitch Albom has done it again! If you enjoyed his earlier books The Five People You Meet in Heaven and Tuesdays with Morrie, then you’ll love his latest release. This story will remind you of what is really important in live - it’s not possessions or looks or money, but it’s the people you love. Anyone who reads this book will feel the urge to reach out to their loved ones...before it’s too late. This is the story of a mother and a son, and their relationship to each other and the missing people in their lives. It explores the question: What would you do if you could spend one more day with a lost loved one? We’re all faced with challenges throughout our lives, but it’s the choices we make along the way that define ourselves and our ultimate happiness. Follow the hero, Charley “Chick” Benetto, on his journey and judge if he makes the right choices as his life unfolds.
