HELLO AGAIN, JEDDAH When we first began to prepare for this issue, we found ourselves wondering how to go about it. Initially, this issue is supposed to be all about shopping. But what aspect of shopping should we focus on? Aside from the conventional practice, we wanted to take a step back and, well, look back at a different form of shopping, the auction shopping and the vintage. Our Special Feature this issue did just that. We pay tribute to merchants that stand out for this practice, who retain a love of the history that comes with each piece, and conduct their business with pride. And what better way to do that than to sit down with these individuals and find out what goes behind this trade. We also had the privilege to sit with the Italian Consul General, Elisabetta Martini, to discuss her tenure in Jeddah, the progression of the country, and what she hopes to accomplish in her final year as Consul General.

9. A Journey Through Dance - An Italian Perspective In light of the kingdom’s interest in the flourish of the Arts in the past year, the Italian Business Group’s (IBG) president Bashar Jabban collaborated with the Italian Culture Centre to bring us a contemporary ballet titled “Omnia Vincit Amor” (Love Conquers All).
The performance was put on by the Keyhole Dance Project, a professional dance company. The Keyhole Dance Project, made up of 8 dancers, was founded by Matteo Zamperin after a trip to the Middle East. The dancers, all classical ballet
trained, decided they wanted to branch out to contemporary dance which deals with the understanding of the human emotions to properly emote them in the performance. Omnia Vinci Amor consisted of three dances that conveyed the soul of Italy through its elaborate masterpiece of a choreography and changed the perception of love as a physical expression through dance. Dance, historically, has been used as a means for expression. The dancers’ movement in cooperation with the music, transcends the physical space between the audience and performers offering the chance

for a personal reflection to a deeper connection. The overall aim of this event was a shared appreciation of the arts and exchange of cultures. The dance company first performed in Riyadh on the 16th at the Italian Embassy before making its way to Jeddah for the 18th of March. The event highlights the appreciation of contemporary dancing in Saudi Arabia. Due to the success of “Omnia Vincit Amor”, we are excited for a future that supports artistic expression in the kingdom and hope to see more of it to inspire the artistic creativity of the individuals that have a lot to show.

A talk with Consul General Elisabetta Martini. By Basma Baarma
24 DESTINATION JEDDAH APRIL 2018

An Italian Perspective
What are the challenges you faced when you came to Jeddah?
The first being appointed as head of mission; it was an honor and a challenge. Having been in diplomacy only for two years, coming to Jeddah and having all this responsibility was a bit intimidating. The second would have to be moving abroad to a country that is culturally far. My job was to get behind the international image portrayed years back and understand it.
What similarities have you noticed between Saudis and Italians?
I would say that there are so many cultural similarities, especially with the southern part of Italy. In small villages, there is a habit of separation of women and men in the cafés, so seeing it here wasn’t that different.
SOURCE PHOTO/SAUDIGAZETTE.COM.SA
Another big similarity, would have to be the flexibility of people. After getting over the novelty of the situation, it was easy to build a long lasting relationship.
What changes have you witnessed since your arrival in Jeddah?
When I arrived, the world people told me about no longer existed; there was a new Saudi Arabia. One of the crucial changes would be the number of women accomplishing firsts, the other is the opening of the Saudi economy, also accepting
women and the younger generation to prove what they can give to their country.
What do you think of the Saudi fashion scene?
I had the opportunity to deal with some fashion designers. They are very talented and I saw Modest Fashion Week featuring Saudi Designers, and that was impressive. Saudis transformed the abaya from a black garment into a fashion accessory and they love it and feel beautiful in it. There is so much variety to being modest that people who have not been to Saudi don’t understand.
How Important is it to bring Italy into Jeddah?
Every time I have a chance to bring someone over, they change their mind about the stereotypes. We organize a lot of events; they are cultural or promotional events. Nothing entertainment is simply just that. There is always a cultural side to it. Integrated Promotion is what we call it.
What more do you hope to accomplish in your last year here? We started a series of Saudi Women Can Drive: Drive Italian. We started with Ferrrari, but we want to expand on it.
Promoting Italian excellence with this series and women empowerment is close to my heart. In May, we will have a conference and exhibit with Italian professors from Italy
The Consul General with Aseel Al Hamad.
and ones here in KAUST about the similarities between the Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea. We want to raise awareness about the turmoils and the migration crisis.
What would you want to say to Jeddawis?
First of all, I’d like to extend my thanks to the people of Jeddah for the warm welcome and the opportunity for letting me express myself as a diplomat and a person. They were so supportive and were always eager to learn about my culture. My time spent here will be an unforgettable experience. I feel like I married the Bride of the Red Sea.

WELCOMING GRIT
INTO OUR CLASSROOMS By Yumna Khan
According to psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth, grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is all about being consistent in your effort and keeping at it despite setbacks and failures. And contrary to our beliefs, it is completely unrelated to one’s level of intelligence or 30 DESTINATION JEDDAH APRIL 2018
abilities and talents. What makes a person gritty is the presence of a growth mindset.
A Growth Mindset
A growth mindset is one where basic qualities like intelligence, talents and abilities are not set in stone, but can instead be improved through consistent effort. When this idea is instilled in students and classrooms, the results are astounding. Armed with the knowledge that their skills and abilities are not permanent, students tend
to take up more challenges and get back up sooner after taking a fall. On the other hand, students with a fixed mindset – those who believe their abilities and IQ levels are permanent and will remain that way – tend to remain interested in tasks allocated to them as long as they’re achieving good results, and maintaining thier grades. As soon as they face a setback or make a mistake that leads to a negative outcome, they lose interest and are easily discouraged from continuing.
SOURCE PHOTO/THECITYSCHOOL.EDU.SA
With the commencement of the school year, it’s a great time for educators to familiarize themselves with one of the most important contributing factors of success – grit, and the actions or mindsets that lead to it.
Grit in the Classroom
To promote a growth mindset as an educator, for starters, instead of praising ability or intelligence, praise effort. Notice the thought process, the choices and the strategy the student uses in order to achieve an outcome. Don’t ignore the outcome completely, either; ensure you always celebrate their success and always connect it to the thought process your student went through in order to achieve it. When the student fails at something, don’t
show disapproval nor brush it under the carpet. Instead, take the moment to teach them that mistakes are part of the learning process. They help you grow.
athlete or an artist, an educator or a medical professional, having a growth mindset and the belief that your persistent effort can improve your skills and abilities.
Teach students to set SMART goals (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely). Goals set this way are more rewarding as you can easily see their progress towards the outcome.
You can start talking to your children about the struggles you’ve faced and what efforts or strategies allowed you to deal successfully with them. Not only will this help form the belief that mistakes and setbacks are healthy, it will also provide children a realistic example of how learning and development is a lifelong process.
The growth mindset can be extended to all areas of life and can be applied by people of all ages. Whether you’re an

GREEN ENERGY
The story of passionate individuals owning Eagle Eye
By Amal Al Toaimi
Ghazi Alem and his partners, all full time employees, decided to look into solutions and other alternatives to reduce the energy consumption in Saudi Arabia. They came up with an idea of incorporating building management systems
(BMS) to optimize light and electricity costs. These entrepreneurs researched top BMS systems and decided to attend sessions in Europe to gather more knowledge on the product. They purchased the equipment to test in their
homes, and noticed a difference in energy reduction. The idea that the BMS system worked within their homes gave them the motivation to grow into a wider scale. They soon realized that they were missing out on the lighting and solar components, so they built their labs to design and develop the system based on their company’s vision (Be Smart & Unique). It then drove them to order materials and start building the equipment they have designed. Following this, they started approaching major government agencies, airports, and other large corporations including Samsung and Siemens, to sell their product. They have grown to have 10 major clients in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and are still expanding. Running their business with an office in Madina Road; the Eagle Eye name has grown massively. It reached to the extent where some European countries are aiming to have Eagle Eye as their products’ representative in Saudi Arabia. Following the succes, they continued further and are currently running teams for lighting production lines in China and Taiwan. In addition to this, a partnership is currently in development for solar systems with a company in Europe.

Sustainable Cities Lab For architects and planners.

Zainab Alireza discovered her love for architecture after a career discovery program at Harvard Graduate School of Design, and the rest as they say is history. For the last five years she has been working with AECOM London and Jeddah, on several large scale projects such as designing for Vision 2030. In order to develop and support local talent, Alireza recently collaborated with Roudaina Al Khany, director at Platforms UK, to form Saudi Women Architects and Planners Sustainable Cities Lab. The Lab took place from Jan. 16-19, in London and Oxford with the aim to give Saudi students and guests a chance
to network, and understand the work that goes into planning a developed city like London.
Alireza describes the lab as “international with a local understanding platform. The lab was launched with the intention to bridge the educational gap, strengthen Saudi female architects and planners by introducing them to people with foreign experience, and develop their mind as designers through the various panels held during the Lab on topics such as education and culture. All in all, the Lab in collaboration with AECOM hopes to develop and hire local talent and promote teamwork, which is key to developing cities. Web: aecom.com.sa

Jeddah Gallery Auction
Prices fluctuate; they are negotiated, fought for. Jeddah Gallery Auction is a sample of the Auctioneer’s Niche in Jeddah. We talked to the owner’s son, Ali Fouzi Omair, about the process of the auction, and what they do. First of all Ali collects antique or vintage items ever few months, brings them to Jeddah and auctions them off. All items in their shop work, and if they do not work, then they could negotiate for a different price. Fouzi Omair, the father, started the shop 23 years ago, but he started out his passion for collecting history, 10 years before, in total of 33 years he has been working as a hobbyist collector of heritage and historical items. As we navigate the shop with Ali we got to speak about

the culture, community, how things operate in Jeddah. Even though antique shopping is considered somewhat of a niche in Jeddah men and women flock to buy vintage and antique items, as the community is small, it is so ever expanding. However, the auctioneering community is within reach, as items sometimes circulate, but often they are sold. Moreover, Ali claims that the auction scene was not as organized as it is today, even though there was a rise of auctioning in the 90’s. “Our shops sources items locally and internationally, and gives us an edge.” Moving on, we discussed the antiques themselves, if there any laws or regulations you need to become an antique seller? Ali response was “actually there are no regulations currently, which unfortunately introduces fake
antiques,” and fake antiques are re-makes. Antiques mostly come with a certification, and there are experts in the field of verification in Jeddah.
I love what I am doing, Thank Allah but I do not face any difficulty, because our prices are good, and it feels rewarding that the items I’m selling go to someone who is going to take care of it. – Ali Fouzi Omair
Finally, the best way to learn about Auctioning in Jeddah is to read about your interests, just to familiarize yourself with the subject. Go to an auction, observe, and when you are ready, interact! Do not hasten yourself, like anything in life auctioning takes time to learn. sljdh Mob: +966-549614595

THE DAR AL ULOUM One of Saudi Arabia’s oldest library becomes a gateway to reimagine the future.
literal translation, was also the first women’s library of its kind in Saudi Arabia.
To the north of Saudi Arabia lies the region of Al Jouf, within it is the town of Sakkakah, once considered an oasis pit stop in the Arabian caravan routes. Its rich biodiversity has made the region ripe for agriculture, and has stirred interest for tourism.
Building upon its founding father’s legacy, AACC advocates for cultural, socioeconomic and intellectual development in Saudi Arabia, particularly with its projects in Al Jouf region and the Al Sudairy hometown of Al Ghat. Funded by the Abdulrahman AlSudairy Foundation and headquarted in Al Jouf, AACC manages a strong research and studies program through its two publications: Adamatu, a journal for historical heritage and archaeology in the Arab world, as well as Al Joubah, a literary and cultural magazine. They also organize educational events, some of which are
Having one of the international borders to the Kingdom, Al Jouf has significant economic potential. While the government has taken steps to invest more in the region, its success relies on a collaborative effort between public, private, and nonprofit agencies. On such organization taking lead in Al Jouf’s development, is the Abdulrahman Al Sudairy Cultural Center (AACC). It was established through a royal 40 DESTINATION JEDDAH APRIL 2018
decree to carry on the work of the late governor of AlJouf, Abdulrahman Bin Ahmad AlSudairy. The latter is known for his public service and ushering a renaissance period in AlJouf, through educational, social, and economic initiatives. An example of the visionary’s commitment to developing the human capital in Al Jouf is the establishment of the Dar Al Uloum Public Library. The “House of Knowledge”, its

held in the community spaces they’ve built—public libraries, school buildings, and auditoriums to name a few. In line with these projects, AACC launched the D.A.U. Initiative, with the aim of breathing new life to the Dar Uloum Public Library in Sakakah, Al Jouf. One of the figures behind it is Jawaher Al Sudairy, who holds a background in urban planning and policy making. “The Dar Al Uloum Public Library is nearing its golden jubilee year, and we knew it was time to bring it up to date. Apart from being a personal and nostalgic undertaking for the foundation, we saw it as an opportunity to get different practitioners involved, further the center’s educational and cultural agenda, and engage the community. We wanted people to rethink the purpose of a library. Apart from the architectural face lift it will be getting, our goal is to create a multifunctional social hub, abreast with the digital demands DESTINATIONKSA.COM 41
of our time, and a space for knowledge transfer and cultural exchange,” she said. According to Jawaher, the D.A.U. Initiative unfolds in three phases, starting with AACC partnering up on with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), AlFaisal University in Riyadh, Dar Al Hekma University in Jeddah and Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University in Dammam. Each of these academic institutions were charged with preliminary research and developing the necessary benchmarks for design functionality and cultural cohesiveness. The exercise simultaneously uses the Dar Al Uloum as an on-going case study for architectural preservation and multidisciplinary investigation. 42 DESTINATION SHARQIYA APIRL 2018
The second phase of the initiative elaborated on these findings through the “The Architecture for the Future” conference. The event saw AACC partnering with Banafsajeel, Minhaj + Bakerloos, RIBA Gulf, and Phonart Saudi to deliver a program and set of activities that encourages creative collaboration, supports young architects, and brings critical concepts, best practices, and relevant trends on the discussion board. The conference also served as the launch pad for the Architectural Competition to redesign the library. “It took us over a year of planning and working closely with faculty members and students from our academic partners to come up with the architectural brief. So it
was an educational process in itself. The research based approach allowed practitioners to thoroughly explore local building practices and materials, and examine the future applications of a library space,” shared Jawaher. AACC emphasized that architectural aesthetics is not the singular determining factor in winning the competition. It is imperative that the themes of connectivity and efficiency play an integral role in the designs. “The center and the foundation considers sustainability as an important element in all its infrastructure projects. International standards for green design coincides with the vernacular architecture in Saudi Arabia, and this will be evident in the redesigning of Dar Al Uloum. Moreover,
The Dar Al Uloum Library Redesign Competition is open for submissions until the end of April 2018. A cash price of $50,000 and the project bid itself will be awarded to the winning design. For more information visit: www.daui.org
sustainability goes beyond adapting energy efficient methods and indigenous structural techniques. It also needs to ensure that the library and its surrounding complex becomes a destination for cultural flow and community engagement, without undermining social sensitivities. Striving for longevity, we should consider how it can be reshaped in the future to fit the needs of the generations to come,” said Jawaher. Submission for the competition were still on-going at the time of writing. Although Jawaher mentioned that winners will be announced by the third quarter of 2018, hopefully in an engaging event open to the public. Apart from its impact to academic discourse, AACC has
carved a two-way tunnel for knowledge transfer through the initiative. Its aspiration is to have practitioners and laymen alike joining the dialogue. If the success of the first and second phase of its endeavor is any indication of its potential to meet its objective, we have no doubt that the DAU Initiative will be a milestone project that brings the country closer to its 2030 vision. This multidisciplinary approach and community engagement can
be a gateway to influence the collective consciousness of Saudi Arabia. Collaborative platforms encourage society members to move from being passive receivers of change, to becoming active agents of it. It is an ecosystem like this that begins with the question, “How do you redesign a library?” and evolves to asking, “How can I reimagine the future?” Email: info@daui.com Web: alsudairy.org.sa

One such story is that of the crew behind “Too Dark To See Tomorrow” (2D2C2M). Maan Al Qurashi, Ahmad Al Wohaibi, and Abdullah Bagalb, are three friends who started the contemporary streetwear brand that has created a buzz in Riyadh and neighboring cities. It was fascinating to learn that these three bonded over their love for fashion and came up with the idea to start a clothing line back in 2011, when they were software engineering students at the King Saud University. “We have always been interested in fashion and we always knew we would one day work on a project related to it together. It finally materialized in 2014. Though it didn’t happen in one day, of course. It took hours of learning and researching; we love what we are doing so that pushed us everyday. It took around six months to get our gears in place and launch our first designs,” said Ahmad. Interestingly, apart from learning the ins and outs of the trade, managing the business side of things, and putting their fashion design caps on; these three still have 9-5 jobs. “It can be a tricky balancing act but each of us is committed to this and so we make it work. After we clock out from our jobs, we go straight to our next one (2D2C2M), we do have a lot of sleepless nights, spent coming up with new designs, figuring out the 50 DESTINATION JEDDAH APRIL 2018
next collection, dealing with manufacturers, and just tackling the ins and outs of it,” shares Abdullah. It helps that these three are not in a hurry. At the end of the day, their goal is to be a brand. They also want to be part of, if not spark a movement that elevates the street scene in Saudi Arabia. “We were never aiming to be an ‘It’ label. We believe that easy come, easy go. We would rather grow slow and steady, to be a brand, not just a trend. The Riyadh scene, when it comes to street fashion or even lifestyle, is still maturing. We do want to be part of building
the culture and representing it,” explains Maan. These decade long friends have a lot of traveling on the horizon, mostly to discover other street cultures and draw inspiration from other urban scenes. Avid fans need not worry, side by side this, the team is already busy brainstorming for their next collection. Nour Abduljawad Recordings of a Baker Nour Adnan Abduljawad is a 17-year-old high school student with a passion for bakery. She started with baking easy-tobake cake mixes and now she bakes many different mouthwatering deserts from scratch. What started as a simple hobby is now her passion. Nour remembers the first time she was ever fascinated by desert. It was a Sugar Cookie made by her friend who kept the recipe a secret. Nour’s determined self could not let it go, so she told herself she had to find the same recipe, if not better! Once she found it and recreated it, she realized that she had a great time. She searched for more recipes online and worked on developing her baking skills. “I really love the feeling of baking something for someone, especially a dish that they love. I feel like by making food for them, I’m showing my love to them. It makes them – and me! – happy.”
She decided to start her own Instagram account to share her creations, recipes, and work process. With the encouragement of her family and friends, she started selling her bakery online. As a high school student, Nour says it is hard for her to focus on both her education and passion. “This is why I decided 54 DESTINATION JEDDAH APRIL 2018
to combine my studies with my passion for bakery – my graduation project focuses on it,” she says. Her project includes a website that features interactive videos of her favorite recipes of sweet and savory treats. She wants these videos to help simplify baking and cooking for everyone. Her mission is to show people that baking is not as hard as they think, and it comes with practice. She also wanted to show people that restaurant-quality food can be served at home. She visited several restaurants in Jeddah and met with the chefs and had cooking sessions where she made some of their famous dishes and recorded them to later add on her website. Nour always suffered to find the right ingredients. That is why she added a category in her website called My Findings, where visitors can get all the hard-to-find ingredients. When asked if she had any tips, she gave us a couple. Her most important rule is to never give up; baking can be tough and can let you down at times when you don’t get it right, but with determination and experimenting with the ingredients, you will end up making the perfect desert! Also, something she always does is keeping an optimistic attitude while baking. She believes that having a positive attitude creates a delightful treat. Web: recordingsofabaker.com recordingsofabaker

Fast forward to 2015, and Kayal unleashed his vision to take his knowledge to the next level in Saudi. A vision focussed on changing our lifestyle, ‘I have a message that I want to share with my community.’ What he feels had been missing in Saudi Arabia was the lack of organisations,

His vision was received well by the higher authority and appreciated by Princess Reema. ‘It’s a movement,’ said Kayal. YOU PARKOUR A couple’s vision for a more active future We at Destination have been hearing a lot about Parkour recently, so we decided to tell you, our loyal readers, what we have found out. We attended a class with Spoonfed’s Jon Dean and Heba Faqih (who brought in a trainer from the UK) to help us understand what Parkour is and what they see for the future of Parkour, here in Jeddah. For those that do not know, Parkour is a French sport. It was originally started by David

Belle as a training discipline for the military, later on becoming a world-wide sport. Parkour trains the body and mind simultaneously. It helps you work every aspect of your body in a more open, nonrestricted routine and teaches the mind to be aware of what the body’s capabilities are. When asked about how challenging the sport is, they stressed that mentally and physically, there is a certain challenge because of the
novelty of the practice, using muscles and moves that are crafted for a sport that is unlike any other while trying to wrap your mind around suspending fear enough for the possibility to execute these moves. Jon and Heba tell us that right now, they are trying to work on implementing Parkour in schools. Parkour being available to the kids would improve the children’s movement with little injury. They’re taking an outdoor
activity and training it indoors in a more controlled environment to limit injuries because children are naturally injury prone, so this would focus their energy and discipline them in a fun, challenging way. They will be heading to government schools for the talented kids and trying it out on the intermediate levels, starting with the girls. As to when they started working on Spoon-fed and the reason why, it all started back in 2013. The couple wanted a healthier lifestyle for their kids, so they decided to work on their own community to fit their needs. The response they got was great, so they started sending out their coaches to different locations to benefit a larger part of the community. They are training locals to make practicing the sport more sustainable, so we got to talk to the first group of ladies that were training. Arwa Al Rifai, a physiotherapist and self-proclaimed fitness freak, told us that “Visualizing helps a lot, seeing yourself do the movement and then just going for it. You’ll be surprised at what you can achieve. Dawn, a personal trainer explained to us the way she uses her strength from other workouts to help with the required movements of parkour. The Savoy to re-open their doors
Lydia Forte, daughter of Sir Rocco Forte, recently visited the Assila Hotel Jeddah (a Rocco Forte Hotel) as Bar and Restaurant Manager of the renowned hotel chain. She spoke of the re-opening of the Hotel Savoy in Florence, a project that has been under development for a while. Olga Polizzi, Design Director, makes sure that the city’s spirit is reflected onto the design of each hotel, where no two hotels would be the same. Florence, birth place of the renaissance, can be seen in the high ceilings, and the magnificence of the

The Savoy is located on the Piazza della Republica, a historical site and the heart of Rome which is a short walk from locations such as the Boboli Gardens, Pitti Palace, and some shopping boutiques. The hotel will be re-opening their doors to the public this month on April 13. Web: roccofortehotels.com

AN UNFORGETTABLE WIN Thailand’s very own Thaworn Wirachant Some of the top international golfers competed in the MCB Tour Championship at the Legend golf course, primed to be in the best condition for this year’s championship, in Mauritius Constance Belle Mare Plage on December 10th. Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant won his first European Senior Tour title in a superb fashion at the championship, as he carded a final round of 62, ten under par, for a 23 under par total. The 50-year-old started the day in a share of the 36-hole lead with Australia’s Peter Fowler, but raced clear after carding six birdies on the front nine. He was a record player and an exceptional golfer who made consecutive birdies on the 13th and 14th holes, then eagled the last to finish eight strokes ahead of Ireland’s Mark McNulty. “I’m so happy to win on my first year in the Senior Tour, it feels fantastic, there are so many good players here. My tee shots were great all week, that really helped. I felt really comfortable on this golf course, it reminded me of playing in Thailand” said Wiratchant.
