Editor-in-Chief Enas Hashani Managing Director Maria Mahdaly Executive Editor Bassma Al Toaimi
DEAREST JEDDAWIS, There is something reassuring about Ramadan. Irrespective of how things change and evolve, for better or worse, over the course our lives, we can count on Ramadan to bring us back to our center. This holy month is a reminder for us of all the things that truly matter in life: faith, family, community, and, underneath it all, ourselves. While Ramadan provides the comfort of traditions that stretch back for generations, those traditions ultimately exist to help us reflect on our personal actions. Fasting and prayer help us reflect on our spiritual growth and relationship with Allah. Gathering around the table for iftar with family and friends allows us to reflect on how much these people truly mean to us and how much we have put into maintaining and developing our relationships with them. Volunteering helps us reflect on our place within our community and what we have done, or can do, to contribute to its growth and evolution.

The opera transported guests into the baroque era, where they got to experience Vivaldi’s four seasons. Each season had its tonality; the Soprano swayed the crowd, as did the Maestro’s strings and his followings. Overall, the guests were overwhelmed but were able to recognize the beauty.

Myths Come Alive The Greatest Royal Rumble By Hosam Kateb
“Don’t you know it’s fake?” A question often thrown at wrestling fans. We do, and that’s the point. The morality tales and outsized characters are not done to resemble a “real” sport. It’s more akin to Greek tragedy or a Shakespearean drama, of heroes, myths, and legends. And for the first time for many, those heroes have finally graced the Saudi stage in a large-scale event. Our entire lives, we have witnessed wrestling characters from behind the dividing barrier of the TV screen, the heroes and villains in this unattainable, unreal stratosphere, where they are just as “real” as Ned Stark, Superman, or Walter White. However, with their appearance in Jeddah, the myth became tangible for the very first time. 12 DESTINATION JEDDAH MAY 2018
Witnessing The Undertaker’s entrance, Braun Strowman’s size, AJ Styles’ talent, and the unmistakable chants of “This is Awesome!” in real life was always, the Greatest Royal Rumble’s attendees felt like they were a part of the show. They were not watching WWE interact with audiences on the other side of the planet, they were the audience, part of the interaction. So I ask you, witnessing each thud of a wrestler being slammed to the mat, each flight through the air, and each grimace of seeing each hold being wrenched, how can someone call wrestling fake? Because to those who attended and the millions watching on TV, nothing could be more real. Don’t we know it’s fake? We do, do you?

Most commonly, Botox Cosmetic treatments include frown lines (vertical “furrows” between your brows, causing you to look angry), crow’s feet (in the outer corner of the eyes, appearing prominently when you smile), and forehead wrinkles. Botox is also used for defining the jawline (Nefertiti Lift), neck bands (platysma muscle), and the chin and fine lip/smokers lines. It is also used to treat excessive sweating as it is injected directly beneath the skin of the underarm. Doctors want their patients to look natural. To do this, they
inject just enough to weaken and relax the targeted muscles without affecting other muscles. This allows patiens to maintain their natural facial expressions. You should look younger and refreshed, not artificial or “frozen.” Botox has been called a “Lunch Break” procedure since it only takes 10 – 15 minutes to perform and most people return to their everyday activities immediately. Blossom’s First Accelerator The first accelerator in Saudi focused on women paving the road for a stronger economy. Blossom launched its first accelerator cohort last month, where four top tier startups led by Saudi female founders were accepted to participate in two exhilarating and intense weeks of accelerating their startups. Startups had access to coworking space, Vibes Offices, receive mentorship from over 30 expert mentors in the field, and got to present their companies on Demo Day, to some of Saudis most prominent investors, governmental, and corporate entities to accelerate their startup even further. 26 DESTINATION JEDDAH MAY 2018
I saw a huge gap in the market. Thousands of startups launching daily by motivated passionate Saudi women but there wasn’t a women focused accelerator dedicated to support these women’s startups to become the next BIG thing. — Emon Abdul Shakoor, CEO & Founder of Blossom
Startups were admitted based on their ability to identify a unique solution to a current
problem in the Saudi market, scalability of the solution to the MENA region, identifying competitors, business and financial model, and perhaps most importantly who the founders behind the company are and how they are equipped to tackle the problem they are currently trying to solve. All startups admitted in the accelerator already have traction and ongoing revenue.
Throughout the program, startups receive mentorship in everything from business model canvas, financial modeling, product design, UX/UI Design, marketing, legal services, to pitching and presenting in front of some of Saudi Arabia’s most prominent investors such as Khalid Suleimani and Loulwa Bakr. Blossom also provided fun and youth filled team building
activities such as yoga, basketball, art and improv classes during the program. “Before I started the accelerator, so many people asked me how I expect to find really good startups in Saudi especially in the technology sector led by Saudi women. However, I knew that there were hundreds, if not thousands, of brilliant Saudi women entrepreneurs that had great startups, so I also created Blossom to give all those women a platform so their companies and dreams could be realized.” says Emon. The program aimed to bring all the key ecosystem game changers and stakeholders all under one roof to create the ultimate network for the startups in the cohort. After the accelerator program, all startups become part of the Blossom community where they will receive perks such as ongoing mentorship and access to a global network. Emon is ecstatic to see all the female founded companies further blossom and continuously shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s economy by creating new job opportunities in the market. Blossom believes that women in Saudi Arabia aren’t just about to drive cars but that they are steering the driving wheel to the economy in Saudi Arabia and playing a critical role in the 2030 Vision becoming a very tangible. MEET THE
JEDDAH HUB Shaping the world, one city at a time The past few years have been the years of change and we love witnessing these changes and informing our readers of them to let them know how hard people of our country are working to make the world a better place, staring off locally in hopes to reach the world. We sat down with Mohamed Tomalieh, curator of the Global Shapers – Jeddah Hub to find out what they’re contributing to the change of the community.
In your own words, could you explain what is the Global Shapers?
A youth initiative by the World Economic Forum. The Worlds Economic Forum is the largest gathering of business owners, government and policy makers. Historically, there was no youth voices in the forum, so the founder created the Global Shapers as an opportunity for the youth to be a part of the change, and allow them to take the motto of the forum and apply it on a local level; which is how the hubs came to be about. There are about 370 hubs in 165 countries.
What is the definition of a Shaper?
Shapers are people that are exceptional. They are seen as 28 DESTINATION JEDDAH MAY 2018

future leaders and have the ability to create a positive change in their communities. We need people to spearhead projects; It is a very selective group. Each comes from a different background which contributes to the projects we take on.
What are some projects of Jeddah Hub?
Before we used to go for general themes, but as of last year, whatever project the shapers wanted to accomplish and change in the community, they could. We aim for two types of projects, the sustainable projects and the quick ones. One of quick projects was a partnership with IDB and the Vision 2030 office; a youth summit in Jeddah. We gathered youth

We launched it as three initiatives; Investment Awareness (holding workshops in universities), Financial Planning (which happened through a single tweet that contained a financial module tool) and a Financial Literacy program for kids in kindergarten. these in your soup is definitely acceptable, if not recommended.
A typical Najdi iftar starts with gahwa and some Kholas or Sukkari dates. Qassimis in particular take pride in their dates, making sure there’s enough stocked for family, neighbors, and friends.
No Ramadan table is complete without a variety of drinks. Orange juice and Vimto are prepared in large jugs. Each plate would have a glass of laban and water, and lest we forget, a finjan of freshly brewed gahwa. Ramadan nights consist of lots of visits between relatives. Both young and old dress in their jallabiyas and thobes – wardrobe staples during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Once the fast has ended, families enjoy a bowl of Quaker soup made with heartwarming spices and mutton. A tray of assorted fatayer (bread and pastries usually stuffed with cheese, olives, and zaatar) is served side by side samboosa stuffed with cheese, meat, chicken, or potatoes. Dipping

While nowadays, Riyadhis prefer to keep their iftar light, some Najdi matriarchs may still prepare a main dish of rice and protein or macaroni. Kabsa, Ghorsan, and Margoog are local favorites.
The long nights are spent playing games, sitting with the elders, and yes, watching about a dozen seasonappropriate soap operas on TV.

Before the adhan starts, three main drinks are present: Zamzam water, gahwa, and laban, all curated to complement the taste of your dates, usually Ajwa or Sukkari, with a tiny dip of tahini sauce or cream on the side. After everyone breaks their fast, there is a silence as they make duaa, and then you can hear the rush of time. Little by little, the tunnel vision expands to different dishes – samboosa stuffed with ground beef, farmooza, ta’mea with tamarind dip, fool scented with bakhoor. Of course somewhere on the table are some of our favorite Ramadan drinks – Vimto, Tang, Sobya, Tamarind and Gamar El Deen. After the main course, the family gathers, prays Maghreb, then they sit and chat, drink green or black tea, play games like Karom. Then we enjoy some sweet desserts including tatlti, konafa, mohalabeya, debyaza, labanyah, and almasya – all ingredients of a delicious Ramadan.

They say the heart of one’s home is its kitchen. The reason, I’m sure, isn’t because it’s where all the food is. No. It’s the heart because kitchens are usually where people sit around a table and break bread. What is it about sharing a meal at a table that brings people closer to one another? It’s where families talk about their day, where people share good news,
do “more with less”, families are rarely getting the chance to sit around a table, together, at once. But not during Ramadan. I've always loved and looked forward to the month. It has embodied what I love and care for the most: reflection, acts of kindness, meals shared with loved ones, reaching out and reaching in, seeking those
closest and dearest, a sense of belonging, festivities, purpose. At the call of Maghreb, everyone gathers to break fast, passing around dates and glasses of water. Smiles and prayers exchange, as the kids run around a little longer before everyone gathers at the table; a table with an almost gravitational pull as dishes
line up and aromas fill the air. A Sharqawi table reflects our culture – inclusive and diverse. You would typically find balaleet, jareesh, oats soup, thareed, sago, and of course, the month’s returning star, Vimto. These dishes, and much more, whether local or native to neighboring regions, are part of what makes Ramadan a memorable experience. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 35

DINING AROUND TOWN
THE MIGHTY FAVA Getting our iftar plans ready from now! By Ahmed Darwish
We have lots of favorite places when it comes to fool. Some are the old traditional ones we all know and love, and others have been opening up within the past few years. This article explores the old and the new. Old places that have maintained their places in people’s hearts for decades, and new places that have taken this simple dish, added their modern touches and turned it into a 21st century dish.
THEN…
FOOL AL WAZEER
Don't miss out on their "Gelaba on Saj" which is gelaba (beans with tomatoes and garlic) cooked on a hot plate, and pair that up with their spicy liver (Kibda) and Tamees bread with cheese! TIP: Make sure you go early and get in line – it’s always packed!
Location: Al Naeem Dist., Prince Sultan Rd.
FOOL ABBAS
This place has been around for over 45 years, and still maintains its reputation for the people of Bani Malik plus visitors from other districts like myself. The workers there received me with such
welcome and smiles that we indeed lack in many of today's modern restaurants. Especially Hajj Mohammed (the cashier) who has been sitting behind the till of this place for the past 30 years. Location: Bani Malik Dist.
FOOL AL AMEER
This is one of the oldest places in Jeddah, with a history of over 80 years. It opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 10 a.m. when they sell out. They opened a second branch in Al Safa as an expansion to a heritage from grandfather to father to son. Note: They don’t sell tamees; they sell Arabic brown bread. Location: Al Hindaweya / Al Safa 38 DESTINATION JEDDAH MAY 2018
FUL 21
NOW…
Ful 21 opened around two years ago and offers only one type of fool and one type of gelaba, but both are with their secret recipe, which has made customers always go back for more. They also have their bread oven so it goes without saying that their hot pita bread is incredible! What’s new? They’re launching in Dubai soon. Location: Qassim Zenil St., Rawda Dist.
We Recommend: Their fool with boiled eggs.
STITA
Another new player in town, Stita (an old Hijazi word which means “the eldest sister”) specializes in Hijazi cuisine. Executive chef Fotoon Halawani adds her twists, resulting in pure delight!
AL AYOUBI
Location: Prince Saud Al Faisal St., Rawda Dist.
Location: Obhur
At the end of our trip, we only scratched the surface of the many options of restaurants that offer fool in Jeddah. Despite the fierce competition from pancakes, pastries, burgers and pizzas, the mighty fava bean is still holding on firm as one of the stars of the Jeddawi table.
The decor at Al Ayoubi is simple and cozy, resembling the old Hijazi houses' interior and even replicas of old cooking ware, lanterns, and fans. They offer seven different types of fool, three of them as "signature" dishes with their blends and spices.

ART PIECE Lomar’s Ramadan Collection
LAUNCHING NOW Get your Ramadan suit on! Take your art piece anywhere you go this Ramadan. 48 DESTINATION JEDDAH MAY 2018 ADVERTORIAL
Art is not only painting, it is the dress we wear, the abaya we choose. Lomar’s new Ramadan exclusive collection inspired by Aseer and The Islamic Spirit was displayed in New York city, at the Brooklyn Museum, and now they are bringing this collection to you! The collection built itself from the Aseeri patterning tradition and the use of vibrant colors in their design. Lomar takes that and utilizes it to befit the abaya and thobe attire in a fashionable trendy way, to let you express the happiness and joy of color all while being fashionable and Ramadan ready! Aseer is a historical region in Saudi Arabia, located in the southwest. It is known for its peaks and farm and merchant culture, great weather. It inspired the locals to create art that they relate to, such as the local patterns, which consist of geometric shapes that are patterned in different color schemes. Moreover, The Islamic Spirit is inspired by the mosaics from different Islamic arts and regions – it starts from you and manifests itself in the abaya. What’s great about the design is that it’s a small reminder that Ramadan is universal and we celebrate our unity and diversity in a fashionable way with Lomar top tier model. THE FINEST RUGS Adding elegance to what matters By Basma Baarma
We love to look our best and it’s even more important to feel our best, so we always have an outfit or a abaya that does the trick. So we thought, why shouldn’t that extend to our prayer gear, as well?
BYJIDA
Jida Choura first opened a workshop in Damascus; making use of the distinctive fabric and embroidery native to the land that were facing extinction. In order to keep the heritage alive, Choura thought to create modern designs that will last.. This Ramadan, the ByJida collection will focus on an interchangeable memory foam concept. This concept allows for the rug covers to easily be exchanged for another, which gives customers the chance to enjoy different colors and designs and the chance to wash the covers. Collection available at Homegrown. Web: jidachoura.co byjida

Mihrab; a wall in the mosque that indicates the direction of the qibla is also the name of inventive brand that caters to prayer rugs. Mihrab’s aim was to fill the much needed gap in retail by launching a lifestyle concept that solely caters towards prayer gear. Designed to complement different styles, the finest materials are selected for the Muslim staple piece. With a story behind every piece, the fourth collection is underway for Ramadan. Saudi Cultural Days A Whole-istic glimpse into the Kingdom’s creative communities. As part of its charge to promote and nurture the Saudi arts and creative talent, the General Cultural Authority organized the first international Saudi Cultural Days. The latter is an international program that brought the Kingdom’s heritage as well as leading Saudi cultural influencers and artists in three major capitals: London, New York, and Paris. The cultural caravan gave guests the opportunity to experience a variety of interactive exhibits, tailor58 DESTINATION JEDDAH MAY 2018
made for each of its pit stops. It was led and tied together by the Whole-istic exhibition of Saudi contemporary and modern art curated by Aya Alireza. Whole-istic provided a glimpse into a wide variety of creative genres, including film screenings, music performances, art and photography exhibitions, and a virtual reality experience. A highlight of the exhibition is the inclusion of King Abdul Aziz Library’s unique
collection of historical photographs that document the status of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia prior to modernization.
Saudi Arabia has a rich cultural heritage – it's a story that is deeply rooted within a vibrant past and is an impactful force for an incredibly exciting future. Our aim is to open visitors' eyes to the diverse culture of Saudi Arabia and to provide a more complete image of what makes Saudi Arabia the country it is today. — Ahmed Almaziad, CEO of GCA
During the exhibition, film screenings shed light on the young talented filmmakers in the Kingdom, including the
award-winning “The Bliss of Being No One,” as well as “A Colorful Life,” a documentary about the empowerment of women, produced by GCA. Al-Qatt Al-Asiri is considered one of Saudi Arabia’s most renowned traditional crafts, it is an age-old art practice espoused by the female community of Asir to decorate the interior walls of their homes using colorful painting
techniques, specifically rooms for hosting guests. The art enhances social bonding and solidarity within the female community, and its continued application in most households ensures its survival. Observation and practice are the key methods for transmitting knowledge, technique and skills for AlQatt. In 2017, it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 59
NEW YORK
Held at the Allouche Gallery on Gansevoort Street, New York Saudi Cultural Days offered a unique repertoire of activities that showcased the Kingdom’s creative diversity and heritage. One of the highlights was a panel moderated by Raneen Bukhari, who runs the art gallery Desert Designs in Sharqiya. It examined the role of social media in cultural exchange. Basmah Felemban, a graduate of the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London, hosted a Q&A exploring the themes of selfexpression through street art in Saudi. The exhibition showcased a range of musical performances by Saudi students studying in the US.
LONDON
Apart from the general Whole-listic program, London Saudi Cultural Days prepared an exclusive photography exhibition displaying the visit of Princess Alice to Saudi Arabia 80 years ago. In addition to the contemporary art exhibition, virtual reality, and exclusive film screening, visitors were entertained by live musical performances from the Saudi Takht Band, Al Dewanya, Mizan Band, and Min Arriyadh Band. 60 DESTINATION JEDDAH MAY 2018
PARIS
Paris Saudi Cultural Days was held under the patronage of the Minister of Culture and Information and Chairman of the Board of Directors of GCA, Dr. Awwad Bin Saleh Al-Awwad, at the Palais De Tokyo in Paris. The panel discussions on film creation, women empowerment, Social media and Cultural Exchange, and art, brought some of the brightest Saudis together on-stage. “Very few places in the world celebrate and value culture and arts like France,” said Minister of Culture and Information and Chairman of the Board of GCA, Dr. Awwad Bin Saleh Al-Awwad at the opening ceremony. “Learning about culture is like receiving a gift, and it is our commitment to
preserve and build upon this gift. As Chairman of GCA, our goal is to enhance and support a creative society and showcase our history and contemporary Saudi culture and the arts both at home and abroad. In this spirit of artistic diplomacy, we open Saudi Cultural Days at Palais de Tokyo and look forward to welcoming and engaging with Parisian visitors.”
ABOUT THE GENERAL CULTURE AUTHORITY

On your right you will find the imported and fully fitted Italian kitchens
with all the appliances already installed. It was also fitted with all of the other equipment designed and made according to the requirements and international standards. It was a well thought of plan which encompasses all what is needed to bring families comfort and peace of mind in their homes. We felt an overwhelming sense of appreciation in regards to what is currently offered in the market. One thing that blew us away was the fact there was this mechanism of sliding walls and it is applied in both the typical apartments and the penthouse. The sliding walls are used to segment the house and provide flexibility, as in they open or close off the kitchen, separate both the guest and living areas, or open or close off the bedroom areas from the rest of the living spaces, to cater to the local cultural needs. The housekeeper’s room is well positioned within the unit and from the living room there is a spacious hallway that leads to the bedrooms. As we walked through the master bedroom and into the master bathroom, we were amazed by the attention to detail in the design, including the treated non-slip floors, to the skirting details. The penthouse is a spectacular five bedroom two level sky villa. The first level includes the salon, main living and dining space, kitchen, a guest room that doubles as a second master bedroom, the housekeeper's room, and a study space. The second level contains four bedrooms including a spacious master
suite and a secondary living area. Outside, the penthouse boasts an expansive terrace, including an outdoor dining area which overlooks the reflection pool, a courtyard that is zoned into different levels to be utilized for different purposes, and a private swimming pool. Most importantly, there are very high walls which provide privacy while you are swimming and enjoying the outdoors. They also have an expansive sky garden with an area of around 2,000 square meters which is a community hub called The Level, which provides residents access to the
lounges, two fully equipped Health Clubs for males and females, a multipurpose room (The Club Room), which the residents can use as a space to host gatherings and celebrate their occasions, a day care and a library- all overlooking the sky garden’s centerpiece, an outdoor reflection pool. It is a vibrant, beautiful space to look at and experience. So if you are looking for a home and you are looking for a better living experience, get in touch with them for a tour! Chef Ali Recommends The road to a healthier Ramadan
Since you probably won’t listen to any of the healthy advice your mom gives you (yes, ourselves included), we went and talked to Park Hyatt Jeddah’s Chef Ali Benali to try and convince you to follow a healthy lifestyle this Ramadan. Chef Ali has a career spanned over 23 years. He worked in his hometown of Morocco, six years in Europe, seven in Dubai, and he’s currently in Saudi Arabia. So you know he knows what he’s talking about. Here’s what Chef Ali had to say. 66 DESTINATION JEDDAH MAY 2018 ADVERTORIAL
1. Preparing for Ramadan
begins before Ramadan officially starts, but that does not mean overeating in the days prior, to have some kind of reserve - it doesn’t work that way.
2. Ramadan appropriate
workouts consist of brisk walking, jogging, cycling, and swimming.
3. Limit sun and heat exposure to reduce perspiration as it leads to dehydration and avoid excessive talking (try explaining that to your boss!) as it dries the mouth.
4. Rehydrating should be
in the form of small quantities at a time. Take sips instead of chugging several bottles of water.
5. Meals should consist of
these groups to hold you over and keep you hydrated: starch, fiber, vitamins, minerals, proteins, and dairy products.
6. The rule states the you need
21 days for a habit to stick and be part of your routine, so Ramadan is a good month to start working on good, healthy habits to become a part of your everyday lifestyle.

A MONEGASQUE RETREAT Relax, Observe, Enjoy
70 DESTINATION JEDDAH MAY 2018
Nothing beats the sweet smell of the sea and the sand beneath your toes as the scorching sun unknowingly tans every exposed part of your skin. Monaco offers the best of the three. A principality that enjoys over 300 days of sunshine makes it the best destination for a business stay or for a tourist-y holiday. A microstate that holds the soul of Monaco, France, an Italy makes it the ideal place to discover. A big plus is the easy access it possesses; a short distance of 30 minutes from Nice, Côte d’Azur airport and an even shorter 7-minute ride by helicopter, the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer Resort is where we had the pleasure of being invited to. The Monte-Carlo 4 SBM resort houses different hotels, but our trip mainly focuses on Hotel Hermitage and a couple of the monuments that are the pride of this famous location.

A namethat packs history behind it, the hotel is called legendary and not for nothing. Upon entering the lobby, our eye automatically drifted to the glass dome that illuminates the reception area as the sun rays hits the glass, bathing the lobby in a sense of calmness. The luxury does not stop there.

The beautifully decorated room overlooked the marina where a glance outside gives view of the yachts docked on the water. Each room and suite at the hotel has its own special design, with artwork and decorations to complement it. With high ceilings and arches everywhere, the hotel is a modern day palace. What is largely known as the center of attention, the Belle Époque dining room is the jewel of the hotel; its intricate ceiling is the work of French painter, Gabriel Ferrier. The hotel is also home to Michelin Stat
restaurant, La Vista Mar, where dinner could only be described as a gastronomic experience with the dessert, the reigning champion of the night. We also got the pleasure of trying out Cryotherapy at the Thermes Marins MonteCarlo. Cryotherapy uses cold chambers that go down to almost freezing temperatures for therapeutic purposes, the 3 minutes spent there was more than enough before moving on to other treatments at the spa.
Buddha Bar restaurant
With so many restaurants to try from, we headed over to Buddha Bar, an Asian Fusion restaurant. Expecting excellence from what we have previously experienced, we were not disappointed. Every aspect was perfectly executed; the food, design and music made the perfect meal.
Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo.
Opera Monte-Carlo
The luxuriousness of MonteCarlo is evident in every aspect of the principality, and that includes prominent monuments like the Casino and the Opera Monte-Carlo. From classical architecture to the internal grandiose interior of the buildings; gold embellishments and velvet furniture, the design speaks volumes about the luxurious life of Monaco. A trip like no other, the 4-day getaway was the perfect way to sit back, put our feet up, an enjoy all that the hotel and Monaco had to offer. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 73

DUBAI ART SEASON Where culture and art collide
Self-expression comes in many forms, the most famous being art. Dubai, being a melting pot of cultures, is adamant to not let its cultural imprint be forgotten. For the past two months, Dubai has been in the midst of holding the 5th edition of Dubai Art Season; a series of cultural events to highlight the Emirati creative landscape; the events, hosted under the patronage of her highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed, are held throughout the duration of March and April of 2018. 74 DESTINATION JEDDAH MAY 2018
Starting out with the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, the event is one of the largest gatherings of like-minded book enthusiasts in the Arab World. From March 1, an incredible number of authors and visitors gathered under a roof to join workshops, attend panels, and participate in competitions. This year, the festival celebrated its 10th anniversary. To commemorate the milestone, a book was put together. For the Love of Words is a book that features the most influential voices that
DESTINATIONKSA.COM 75
participated in the festival over the last 10 years from the likes of Jacqueline Wilson, Anthony Horowitz, Mohammed Al Murr and Victoria Hislop. Following the Literature Festival, the festivities continued with Art Week, headlined by Sikka Art Fair. Sikka is known for being the platform of the contemporary artist, situated in the heart of Dubai, at al Fahidi historical neighborhood. What set this year’s Sikka Art Fair apart is the heavy presence of Saudi Arabia in their midst. By order of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed of the collaboration of the United Arab Emirates and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in many fields, art being one of them, ‘Saudi House’ was erected at the Sikka to showcase the talent of over 20 creative Saudis in calligraphy, pottery, art and photography. Of the names that made us proud of their accomplishments were Sara Maiman; who showcased her work in the ‘Majlis Area’, ‘Photography Room’ by Khlood Alkhaldi, Moath Alofi, and Abdulrahman Aldgelbi, ‘Calligraphy & Graffiti Room’ by Ayman Alhafith, Maha Al Ghanmi and Maryam Abushal and much more. Participating in the Dubai Art Season was the Van Gogh Alive – The Experience; an exhibition which has been touring the world, that showcases some of Van Gogh’s most famous work. With a soundtrack to accompany the acclaimed artist’s artwork, the exhibition really was as promised, an experience. 76 DESTINATION JEDDAH MAY 2018
As we all know, the word art does not fall under one form; music is also a big part of that, which is clearly shown in the hosting of the World Doctor’s Orchestra at the Dubai Opera, where doctors put down their tools and pick up a musical instrument for a one night only charity concert. Other events include the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Awards, the Middle East Film and Comic Con, the ING Creative festival, and World Art Dubai; where you can experience art and should you love it so much, even take it home. There is nothing that brings people together like shared experience of the appreciation of beauty.
WHERE TO STAY? AL BANDAR ROTANA With two connecting towers located on Baniyas Road and in close range to major attractions, Al Bandar Rotana and Al Bandar Ajraan, are contributing to Dubai’s growing tourism business by providing properties to support the numbers coming into Dubai. With a location that looks over the waterway and Burj Khlaifa offering a look of the famous skyline, and multiple restaurants to choose from, the Rotana Hotels offer an ideal stay in Dubai.
