Oh January, the month of new beginnings and promising days ahead. As we hang our calendars, the Destination team feels a surge of excitement at the great many things we have in store for you. There are changes up ahead and we do hope you stay tuned, because it is going to be epic. But first, we decided to start the year where everyone’s stories truly begin, their homes. This issue focuses on the abodes and little sanctuaries we build for our families and ourselves. At the end of the day, we want you to turn the pages and see yourselves reflected in the articles we have put together. Destination has taken it upon us to make sure that you would never have to say that Jeddah is boring. For those wanting to explore the city, why not visit Abdul Raoof Khalil museum? Or perhaps, have a foodie adventure by going through our list of shawarma picks. If that’s not enough, check out what’s hot in the art scene or be inspired to do some yoga. Yes, this edition is going to keep you busy all month long! You’re welcome. At the end of the day, what makes a place your home isn’t the pillars and gravel it’s built on. A home is where you feel you belong, regardless of where you are. The beauty of it lies in the relationships you foster and the stories you create within it. Jeddah — it is your home and we’re here to make you see how sweet of a home it is. Enas Hashani Editor-in-Chief

BUSINESS
FINANCIAL PLANNING with Reem Asaad
Growing wealth No easy mission I get a lot of questions on how to “grow wealth.” This is a natural question for all cash holders, and it involves so many details and ingredients. Many view investing as only purchasing stocks, land or even gold. These are pretty much the tools (aka asset classes) known to Saudi investors. Then comes the question: How much should I put into each bucket? Should I throw it all in one asset to reap maximum return?
In finance lingo, this is referred to as “capital allocation.” What it really tells us is how much of your intended capital goes to each “asset class.”
Are you a millennial?
In other words were you born in 1980s or after? Recent studies show that this category tends to invest their cash and savings rather conservatively. According to a UBS study, they hold their savings:
52 %
in cash
28 %
in stocks
For other generations, the weightings are nearly the reverse:
23 %
in cash
46 %
in stocks
Typically if you’re in your 20s you ideally hold 60 percent or more of your portfolio in stocks. Stocks are considered high-risk assets followed by
bonds then cash in descending order of riskiness. But investing conservatively — or investing very little and holding your money in cash — runs counter to conventional investment advice for the young, which says:
Invest aggressively now, while your long-time horizon will allow you to recover from any losses, so you can reap the benefits of growth. So in the occasion of a new year and hopefully a new beginning, I recommend that you start educating yourself on investing. Among many, investopedia.com is a personal favorite to learn the basics of finance and investing. You should expect to come across a long inventory of terms and glossary but be patient. Also do check out #nasi7atreem for frequent postings on investing and personal finance. The Author: Reem Asaad is an inspirational Saudi woman. She is a wife, mother, writer and financial advisor. LINA HAJJAR BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS
By Mohammed Mirza
18 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2015
Law Graduate
Hajjar is a law graduate who studied in Cairo. But after graduating and coming back to her home country, she realized that there are few jobs for female lawyers in the Kingdom. Times have changed and things have improved, but she is still not happy with the posts female lawyers hold. With her hopes of becoming a lawyer shattered, she went on
to earn a diploma in interior design and develop love for the profession. Her passion led her to becoming a radio disc jockey who gave home dĂŠcor advice on air at a local station.
She followed the success of her radio gig by setting up her own interior design consultancy Simple Design.
STAFF PHOTO / MOHAMED FAWZY
In her modish office Lina Hajjar sits at her vast wooden table, which fits perfectly with the color theme of her room. Lina Hajjar is definitely no ordinary interior designer. She is a Saudi woman who has overcome all odds and now runs her own interior design consultancy. Her inviting and eclectic interiors have allowed her to become one of the most recognizable faces in the industry. However, like many other new entrepreneurs her journey has not been that easy.
The Challenges
Just like many other small business owners, there were many obstacles to overcome. LAWS “The governmental authorities have not crafted a special set of rules for interior designing companies yet. We are forced to function under a general set of rules that apply to other companies that sell physical goods,” Hajjar observed.“This makes it harder for us to get our rights, as I sell an idea not a physical product.” COLLABORATIONS Teaming up with big companies on interior decorating projects has been her lifelong dream, but this has also been very hard to accomplish. “The well-established design and décor companies hardly ever collaborate with small and medium ones thus preventing them from getting the necessary exposure to the market,” she said. “I have faced this problem right from the start of my career.”
Lina is very ambitious and knows what she wants. Lina has worked with many big names in the interior design industry thus giving her a lot of necessary experience. — Wedyan Saleh, a Saudibased designer
“Many designers in the country continue to copy foreign designers, I try to be as original as possible with my work.” — Lina Hajjar
Work
She is currently designing the look of a local furniture store and takes pride in her designs, which are on display around the store. Modern and chic, her diverse installations around the store represent the personality of a young independent Saudi woman. The glazed walls, patterned carpets, ornate antiques, elaborate draperies and all that flowery fabric, may read as high-end indulgences today, but her skill at mixing colors, patterns and prints is what makes her stand out from the numerous designers in the country.

The Secret
In designing for clients, Hajjar starts by getting to know their likes and dislikes. "I'm there to be the enabler, to make their dreams come true," she said. "I love learning about my clients' characters, then extracting that to put into their interiors. One of the first lessons in life is you must have real honesty in your career and in the way you deal with your clients. That garners respect."
Lina is very creative and her designs are brilliant! She is a very good listener and behaves in the most polished way with her customers thus she is able to deliver exactly what her customer wants. — Nada Alhamadani, an intern at Simple Design
Hajjar found it relatively easy to become a wellestablished name in the Saudi Arabian market. “Your work speaks for yourself; I didn’t have to face much difficulty to get opportunities to decorate office spaces of big companies,” she said.
A room inspired by Saudi football clubs.
“It’s an active job that requires energy, passion and artistic skill.” Although not her first career choice, Hajjar has clearly made a mark in the interiordesigning scene in the country. Her business acumen and willingness to make her own choices motivated her to single handedly setup a successful

design consultancy. Although running a business has not been that easy for Hajjar, her distinct style and originality has allowed her to work with big companies and compete in the tough interior design industry.

WHAT TO DO WITH your small SPACES? By Sohila El Saadany
Large spaces seem to take all the credit; spaciousness attracts people’s attention, and creates a sense of comfort. So what to do if you are stuck with a small space? How do you create the illusion of it being larger?
Cool Colors, Bro
Soothing colors relieve stress and fool the eye into thinking rooms are bigger. They expand spaces and give way for eyecatching décor. Avoid the use of dark colors, because they have the same “slimming” effect on rooms as they do on clothes. Rooms with light blue, green or purple are easier to decorate with flashy colored knick-knacks. Cool color schemes keep rooms fresh and inviting and add a calm candor as well.
Itsy Bitsy
Contrary to popular belief, tiny rooms do not have to contain tiny furniture. A large piece of furniture is a lot better than tiny pieces all around. The latter may give off a clutter-like vibe. Large items will also draw attention to themselves rather than to the size of the room.
Let There Be Light
Always make sure there is light, as it flows into a room and expands its interior. It also adds a cheerful effect. If you have limited or no access to natural light, use some creative lighting with unique lamps or spotlights. According to interior designer Bronwyn Poole, focusing more on uplighting (floor lamp or wall lights) makes your living room appear bigger. Torchieres (tall lighting stands) are also an excellent way to make light spring off the ceiling, hence making the room’s top look higher.
26 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2015
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
Surround the room with mirrors or glass. That will make the light bounce right off and create a marvelous effect in making the space look bigger. You can incorporate the mirror effect into the furniture itself, like in using a glass coffee table, or hanging glass frames.
Another trick that imitates the mirror effect is using clear furniture pieces.

Use boxes and baskets to organize all the little things in your closet, drawers and even the fridge. Keep separate boxes for t-shirts and pants, for jewelry and makeup and for canned goods and fresh produce.
An organized home is a happy home, but it’s a little too easy to fall into the trap of a messy one. Here are five tips to get you started on cleaning up your closet.

HIJAZ AND ITS UNIQUE ARCHITECTURE Saudi Arabia has a distinctive architectural heritage that has developed over centuries. Let's open this door and discover more. By Mohammed Mirza
The Kingdom encompasses a greater variety of architectural styles more than any other country in the entire Arabian Peninsula. The buildings of the Hijaz, the northern oases, the southern mountains, the central plains of Najd and the eastern Gulf Coast are entirely distinctive and local in their character. Historically, building designs and materials were dictated by the climate, geography and resources available. Builders in the central region of the Kingdom preferred adobe for its malleability, abundance and insulating qualities. In western Saudi Arabia, stone and brick were common, while in the Hijaz and other western coastal regions builders used coral from the Red Sea. Over the years Hijazi architecture has developed its own identity and is disparate from entire Arabia. Today it stands as a testimony to the region’s glorious past and is an epitome for coastal Red Sea architecture.
30 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2015
History
Several towns in the Hijaz have been directly exposed to foreign architecture due to the large number of foreign pilgrims the region received over centuries. The region became a gateway to pilgrims traveling to the Holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. The former and latter themselves being part of the Hijaz saw many pilgrims settling in them, while in due process brought with them aspects of their craft and culture from their respective countries of origin. The region became a meeting point of various Muslim cultures, notably of Arabs, Indians, Persians and Ottomans which changed the architectural landscape of the region and play a crucial role in its rich heritage.
KEY ELEMENTS DOOR Ancient Arabs were always fascinated by doors. The countless possibilities that lie behind it have inspired many Arab poets to use the door as a metaphor for both optimism and pessimism. Hijazi architecture is no different with doors playing a crucial role; they are a means of displaying the wealth of a household and define the overall look of the building. The bright colors and bold designs on the front door provided a glimpse of the richness that lies behind it. Doors with floral, ornate, elliptical and geometrical patterns are a key feature in typical Hijazi doors.
RAWASHEEN These latticed windows are adorned with delicate and convoluted wood works. What makes these rawasheen even more special is that they are nowhere to be found anywhere in the country except the Hijaz. The word rawasheen, plural of roshan, originated from a Persian word meaning an elevated window which lets in plenty of light. These rawasheen are an architectural masterpiece, created in accordance with the climatic conditions of Jeddah. they break up the sun’s glare but also let the cool sea breeze to enter the building when the inner windows are opened.
Construction
The residents of Hijaz built their homes using carefully selected rocks taken from the nearest coral deposits. These rocks were then molded using several manual tools then set down according to their sizes. The builders then positioned these rocks into Midameks — lines of rocks separated by pieces of wood (Takaleel) one meter apart. This technique helped spread the weight evenly over the walls. The wood used was retrieved mostly from the nearby Fatima Valley or imported from other countries (especially India) via the seaport.
DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 31
Future
Not many years ago, most architects would have found the terms "modern" and "traditional" incompatible. Today, architects across the country have realized that they must learn to adapt and have become involved in the process of distinguishing elements of their culture from the anachronisms.
Urban Planning
Towns in the Hijaz were like those of typical Arabian cities in terms of planning. Social events, trade and administration were practiced at its center where markets, mosques, and government buildings were situated.
Encompassing this core, closely built-up groups of houses were balanced by open spaces of diverse dimensions and forms, while miniscule and maze-like lanes created a typical Arab street fabric.
At the same time they also have a growing personal interest in efforts to rethink the standard forms of modern architecture in the light of national heritage. Thus architects are focusing on elements which had for centuries contributed to the regional individualities of traditional architecture and which they slowly began to realize, might just as logically inspire modern design. These elements include climate, building techniques, usage and forms of design. The induction of Jeddah’s historical area (which in itself is an epitome of Hijazi architecture) in the coveted UNESCO World Heritage List, has promulgated the spread of Hijazi architecture far and wide. Perhaps looking at Hijazi architecture, all we can hope is to never lose the soul that inspired and guided us; that allowed us to develop our own identity and gave a rich heritage backing our future.

DĂŠcor inspiring
movies By Sohila El Saadany
Some movies not only portray great acting, interesting plots and breathtaking cinematography, but also inspire decor trends. Movie sets imply the personality of a character to the audience, possibly before the character even appears.
THE GREAT GATSBY (2013 version)
The novel-based movie has won an Oscar for best Art Production. It did not only feature amazing costumes to fit the 1920s era, but also portrayed a wide variety of vintage glam decor.
34 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2015
Gatsby’s Bedroom
It gives off a metallic sense due to the richly polished hardwoods, cupboards, and poles that give off a bronzy texture. The carpet, bed cover, chairs, and wallpaper sections
are all in harmony with their shades of gold against the bold amber poles and black bed. The spiral staircase on the side leads to the splendid closets at the top.
DOWN WITH LOVE (2003)
The set of this movie proves that a large room does not have to be filled with furniture all around to be chic.
THE HOLIDAY (2006)
It is only natural that this movie portrays two dissimilar sets since it is about swapping the lives of two very different people.
The movie depicts a big living room, but with very minimal furniture. Only a couch with colorful cushions, two sitting chairs and unique tables.
The drapes are of a softer shade of pink, the lamps and low hanging lights are also a nice touch as they engulf the room in tenderness.
You have the rustic cottage vs. the modern apartment. The cottage living area contains a combination of patterns and solid colors all against its beige background. The California house living area is spacious and is characterized by its neutral colors of white, grey and beige.

FAST FORWARD
21,39 JEDDAH ARTS 2015 EXHIBITION ‘21, 39’ takes its clever title from Jeddah’s geographical coordinates and is in short, an annual event held at the heart of Kingdom that highlights, promotes and showcases the Saudi art scene. The event is back again this year, taking place Jan. 21 – 26.
The second edition starting in January will showcase a curated program of culture, talks and exhibitions which we aim to share with our audience, creating an accessible experience for cultural influencers, enthusiasts, media and the art world in the Kingdom.
—Zeinab Abu Alsamh, Director of The Saudi Art Council.
Fast Forward, the 2015 exhibition for 21,39, will attempt to compile a historical record of the development of the visual arts ecosystem in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The exhibition, arranged as a timeline, will present initial, non-exhaustive research findings into the development of artists, art professionals, collections, foundations, public art and other factors that contributed to building the art movement and extending its reach. The exhibition will challenge the common recounting of the story of the Kingdom’s visual arts movement as a singular, recent phenomenon which developed at the accelerated pace of globalization. It is important to make the
36 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2015 ADVERTORIAL
distinction that as it recounts the journey of visual arts in Saudi Arabia, the exhibition will, in essence, focus on influences and events, not artists and artworks. Critically, Fast Forward is an announcement of the commencement of research into the history of visual art infrastructure and practices in the Kingdom. It is the aim of the exhibition to act as an instigator for the public to come forward with information, images, and collateral materials that can be documented in a muchneeded archive. The Saudi Arts Council will act as the custodian of this archive and is currently exploring ways to make it publicly available as an education and research tool.

A R T S & E N T E R TA I N M E N T
At that time, among the first founders of hip-hop in Saudi Arabia were Saudi rappers Abadi, Klash and Qusai.
Part 2 Big Hass By Big Hass
Hip-hop arose in Saudi Arabia between 2000 and 2001. The globalization of the Internet and the growth of Internet users in the region point out a small sign of slight liberalism and openness to the Western culture. No matter how conservative and procensorship the Kingdom is, contemporary rappers and their explicit lyrics reached even quicker than ever before. Saudi youth previously relied on music stores to savor on some cool tunes. Eventually, Arabic blogs started emerging and interactivity with hip-hop became a click of a button away.
38 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2015
From hip-hop enthusiasts’ bloggers to rappers from the GCC, it wasn’t really a wellmonitored beginning as it was mostly circulating around teens who didn’t have role models to properly guide them. The way hip-hop primarily evolved in Saudi Arabia perpetuated in a redundant and vulgar sequence of mutual dissing and overused topics.
Hip-hop unfolded into the inexperienced hands of Saudi youth: techniques were unpolished, the core of hip-hop was misunderstood and unhealthy challenges became a trend. It took the form strong language and the main purpose is to shake up and intimidate the opposing rapper.
Mostly known to all, famous for his smooth hosting skills in “Arabs Got Talent,” Qusai stands out as hip-hop pioneer in Saudi. His commercial success and presence under the public eye does not nevertheless undermine his involvement in local social issues, in supporting local artists and reflecting a more accurate image of hip-hop.
Qusai

HIP-HOP
One of the earliest rappers is Abadi, who hasn’t been releasing a lot of material lately. On the other hand, Klash started on the wrong foot but eventually corrected his mission statement as a rapper and changed his rapping style, lyrics and attitude vis à vis the essence of hip-hop and the new generation of local hip-hop fans. His recent messages are all mainly social and community issues. He is known for his straightforward lyrics and senses of controversy.
Jeddah Fam Group
It wasn’t until Qusai came back from the US that rappers started to rap in English. The scene is very diverse.
It’s important to state that there are some underground artists who are non-Saudi but have been living in KSA for more than 15-20 years. For instance, hardcore underground hip-hop group Run Junxion consists of 6 MC’s and 3 producers. Although they come from different parts of the world, they are a family. Their nationalities range between Syrian, Saudi, Canadian, American, Indonesian and Eritrean.
Most of their lyrics are in English, which makes their fan base a bit limited. In the Kingdom, the English language is not favored due to a local conservatism and strong attachment to heritage and culture. It is not rejected but rather considered secondary. Another group to mention is Jeddah Fam, a group that mixes hip-hop and RnB, using both English and Arabic languages. The group carries positive and uplifting messages. Consisting of eight members, originating from Saudi Arabia, Eritrea and Somalia, the group envelops Black Drama, who is considered one of the best rappers to rap in Arabic and
Ayzee, an R&B artist with a very promising future. In the current music scene, artists such Klash, Slow Moe, Moh Flow, Majeed and Abz also stand out. Alongside Qusai and a handful of artists, Klash have been in the scene for quite some time. As for Slow Moe AKA, Saudi Thugz, highly influenced by hip-hop legend 2PAC, carries on a controversial persona. He is very popular due to his attention to the youth and creating the “SaudiThugz” movement. Moh Flow is considered one of the top hard-working artists in the Saudi scene. More fluent in English, DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 39
THE LOCAL SCENE PRIORITIZES RAPPERS THAT ARE FLUENT IN ARABIC. Joining him are Majeed, Sleuther and Abz, who also rap in English and have great potential if they stay consistent.
Furthermore, there are other artists in the scene, but who aren’t as active as the ones previously mentioned. To name a few, MC Rakan, The West Side Us, The West Coast G.Z., DEVI.G and others. I will be shedding light on more artists and other elements of hip-hop in future issues. At the end of the day, it is a fact that hip-hop culture has become a universal one.
My aim as a supporter of this culture is to show people in Saudi Arabia that this culture can be used to express, advocate the voiceless and to revoke unjustified power-battles and egocentricity. The ultimate motto is to stay real! — Big Hass

THE C H A M P!
A BREAKTHROUGH IN KSA'S SCENE! By Bassma Al Toaimi
The largest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion company in the Arab world, Desert Force, took place in Jeddah for the first time. It provided Saudi fighters with the ideal platform to compete in their home country.

How does it feel to be able to compete in your home country? I never thought I would be part of this historical event. Although I was extremely excited, I was feeling pressured because I was fighting in front of my family and friends and because it’s the first MMA event in Saudi! Loosing this fight wasn’t an option. I couldn’t let down everyone who came to support me, and thank God I couldn’t have asked for a better victory. I would like to thank Desert
Force for giving me this opportunity, and a special thanks to Prince Abdullah bin Mesaed for allowing this event to happen.
What do you think of the potential of MMA in Saudi Arabia? MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world, However In Saudi it’s not as popular, but after this event it will give a huge boost to MMA in Saudi Arabia, people will now understand what is mix martial arts and will look at it from a different angel. It’s a great motivation to see their own Saudi fighters winning at the event. I think it will take time for MMA to be as famous as soccer or basketball but it will reach its position one day.

It was the best feeling ever to compete in front of my friends, teammates and family. The presence of my beloved father really got me excited and ready to do my best. I wish Desert Force could always be in Jeddah.
What do you think of the potential of MMA in Saudi Arabia? When I joined Spider Team with captain Mohammad Najjar and Captain Ahmed Makki five years ago none of us imagined that one day MMA will be this big in Saudi Arabia but now it is in fact bigger, and more people will start to join, thanks to Arena MMA and Desert Force. Saudi Arabia hosted its very first Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event, Desert Force, at Arena. The event was attended by one of the greatest MMA trainers, Ricardo Liborio who is the head instructor and co-founder of American Top Team, an MMA school, and co-founder of the Brazilian Top Team. Liborio ventured into the world of MMA at the age of 4 and played a wide variety of martial arts like judo, taekwondo and boxing. At 14 he started jiu-jitsu and kept going until he became a paramount name in the world of MMA. He truly believes that MMA, and jiu-jitsu in particular, will augment the young generation’s growth. “It’s such a benefit for the youth and an enhancement
in the quality of life style, it’s unparalleled. I see this in the Middle East as being one of the major components of change in new generations and new attitudes.” Desert Force held in Arena for the first time in Saudi Arabia established the country’s name on the MMA map. “What’s going on here will transform the world of MMA in Saudi Arabia, and maybe even in the Middle East, and will definitely enhance a lot of capacities in MMA. This is a story in the making for MMA and jiu-jitsu in Saudi Arabia, and it will make history. The event gives off an unbelievable sense of accomplishment.”
The fact that it is held in Arena is a thrill to him since“Arena is the most equipped mixed martial arts facility in the Middle East, and is one of the biggest icons in Saudi Arabia. The story of MMA and the story of jiu-jitsu starts with Arena.” Liborio was more than ecstatic to be part of such a grand event. This was his second time in Jeddah, and he looks forward to his next visit because of the “good people who have been so cherishing, and the amazing food of course!” @liborioatt Web: americantopteam.com

In a step to further prove that social media is more than just “media” which is the approach some brands, agencies, and marketers are taking, Facebook started exposing its users to fewer promotional posts asking fans to buy something, enter a competition or install an app appear in news streams. This comes just days after Facebook revealed a new set of privacy policies which will allow users to query why they have been targeted with certain ads. The social network said the change came after it asked hundreds of thousands of people how they feel about the content in their newsfeeds, and many responded that they want to see less promotional content. This will see posts that purely push viewers to buy something, posts that push people to enter promotions and sweepstakes with no real context and those that reuse the exact same content from ads penalized. Facebook shared an image of what a “promotional” post is.
46 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2015
Revealing the move in a blog post, Facebook said: “Beginning in January 2015, people will see less of this type of content in their newsfeeds. As we’ve said before, newsfeed is already a competitive place – as more people and pages are posting content, competition to appear in newsfeed has increased. All of this means that pages that post promotional creative should expect their organic distribution to fall significantly over time.”
The disruption social media has done to marketers remains unprecedented. “Money” (budgets) isn’t king on social media. Content is and forever will be.

BEST MOISTURIZERS
Tried and Tested By Zareen Muzaffar
I have used and tried many moisturizers based on my skin type, and many times it has been a case of trial and error. Choosing the best moisturizer takes time but some brands offer the best quality and options for your skin type. Here is a list of some that have always worked without causing breakouts, redness or other issues.
Clinique: Clinique’s Moisture Surge (for sensitive skin) is perfect for dehydrated skin that craves moisture. This effective cream not only gives a supple look to the skin, it helps retain moisture in the skin and reduces water loss. Available at Paris Gallery, Debenhams, Wojooh, Sephora, Va Va Voom
Chanel: Chanel Hydra Beauty moisturizers are available in gel and cream form. Both are ideal for combination skin but richness differs in both products. Gel form is lighter and absorbs faster while the cream is slightly richer and thicker in texture. Those with dry to combination skin can try both with equally good results and did I mention the fragrance is just amazing?
Available at Paris Gallery, Debenhams, Wojooh, Sephora, Va Va Voom
Clarins: My absolute
favorite Multi-Active day cream and night cream by Clarins provides a great moisture barrier to my skin and even after numerous washes my skin doesn’t feel over dry or tight. You can layer your preferred sun screen after applying the day cream if heading out during the day. The night cream helps the skin look refreshed and supple by morning. The MultiActive cream range is for all skin types.
Available at Paris Gallery, Debenhams, Wojooh, Sephora, Va Va Voom

La Prairie: This product may be on the pricey side, but consider this as an investment for healthy skin. La Prairie line of skin care is highly effective and their Skin Caviar Luxe Sleep Mask is magic in a bottle. The texture might be a little too thick for those with oily skin but a little goes a long way so you don’t need to apply a lot. Apply at night before sleeping and wake up to healthy glowing skin.
Shiseido: Shiseido is one of the leading brands when it comes to skin care. They day protective moisturizer with SPF 15 gives a radiant glow to the skin making it a a perfect base for makeup application. But this product may be too creamy for those with oily skin leaving their T-zone a little shiny, but it’s great for dry to combination skin type.
Available at Paris Gallery (Aziz Mall, Mall of Arabia, Red Sea Mall)
L’Occitane Creme Divine: L’Occitane’s
Available at Paris Gallery, Debenhams, Wojooh, Sephora, Va Va Voom

The Courtyard
The Courtyard leaves me confused. Why? Because all the restaurants there are simply superb and I have a difficult time choosing. But one thing is for sure. No matter where you choose to dine; Semsom, Kalila, or Square Meter, you can enjoy the evening breeze with some great quality food.
Shababik Located on Prince Sultan Street, Shababik is an authentic Lebanese restaurant in Ana Gheir Mall. Take advantage of the balcony view, enjoy the weather with some sheesha, fresh food and juices. Their strawberry with banana chiller is a must try and the pomegranate juice is equally refreshing.

DINING AROUND TOWN
Shawarma Showdown Shawarma is all about the savory taste of the sliced and diced chicken or meat engulfed in a coating of garlic, tahini, and ketchup with french-fries surrounding them. All this is wrapped up in layers of bread ready to explode in a volcano of flavor. By Sohila El Saadany
In addition to our favorite shawarmas from Palm Beach, Shawermatac and Al Zawaqa, here are some others you have to try.
Ashwaq
The chicken shawarma sandwich contains the same constituents in addition to french-fries that accentuate its taste even more.
Radi Helal
Try meat and chicken shawarma the Yemini way. Each sandwich is prepared differently to appeal to fans of both red or white meat.
THE ESKANDAR SHAWARMA Ashwaq also serves another kind of shawarma, a delicacy of Turkey, the Eskandar shawarma that is chopped up meat or chicken drenched in the restaurant’s tasty secret sauce, an element of mystery to the piquant dish.
The sliced meat is placed on top of a layer of chopped up
lettuce tomatoes parsley
It is marinated with both tomato sauce and tahini that erupt into a taste blast bite after bite. 68 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2015
All these constituents with their colors infused together make the sandwich look more like a work of art than a mere meal. The chicken in the shawarma is of no less flair. It is very tender and is covered in mayo to highlight its flavor. The sandwich is also stuffed with french-fries!
STAFF PHOTO / MOHAMED FAWZY
The Turkish restaurant simply wowed us with its shawarma! Not only is its meat shawarma sandwich tasty, it is also healthy. The fat-free meat is set on top of tomatoes, onions and bell pepper, and then wrapped up in a thin sheet of bread.
Abu Nemr
This is a destination for chicken shawarma lovers since it is the restaurant’s specialty. Abu Nemr adds a twist to the original chicken shawarma by drizzling it with mozzarella cheese, an addition that is only found here. The ingredients are then rolled up in Shami bread.
CHILI SAUCE
GARLIC MAYO
THE SANDWICH COMES WITH
FRIES
Because Abu Nemr is aware of hunger striking at any time, the restaurant is open until 3:30 a.m. for those who need their dose of nightly shawarma.
All the mouthwatering flavors seem to entwine together to give off a taste palate fiesta.
Cuisine Halawani
This restaurant has taken shawarmas to another level; it does not serve them as in the commonly seen way off a meat roaster. Instead it offers stove cooked meat or chicken.
These are then soaked in poignant garlic with pickles thrown into the mix, all to be rolled up in bread.
Shawermatac
The small size sandwich comes wrapped in Shami bread, while the big size comes wrapped in tortillalike bread.

CHICKEN CEASAR SALAD Shawermatac is one of our top choices for their shawarmas and also their special ceasar salad. They use shawarma chicken! Yum! Tip: Ask for extra sauce. DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 69

‘THE PICASSO OF PASTRY’
Launches Beautiful Boutique in Jeddah
Pierre Hermé Paris proudly announces the launch of a new location in Jeddah, KSA. Chef Pâtissier Pierre Hermé comes from a long heritage of pastry professionals and began his career at the age of 14 as an apprentice to Gaston Lenôtre. The influence of this legendary Master Pâtissier was the beginning of a journey for Pierre Hermé who went on in his early 20’s to become Head Chef Pâtissier of the exclusive Parisian Food Hall, Fauchon, where he remained for 11 years until 1996 when the Pierre Hermé Paris story began.
The respect given to the raw ingredients allows an intensity of flavor
Pierre Hermé’s macarons have evolved over the course of his career. His initial foray into his lifelong relationship with the macaron started in the mid 1970’s when he questioned the traditional approach to this French delicacy. In 1986, he introduced new, bold flavors for that time like rose and pistachio, which have now become classics. His passion continued to grow and he began to develop textures and flavor combinations like lime and basil, he created seasonal macarons such as white truffle and hazelnut and played with texture and flavor release with olive oil and vanilla containing small pieces of olive. Like a perfumer, Pierre Hermé has created his own blend of flavors such as the

house vanilla selection, which combines 3 different types of vanilla - from Tahiti, Madagascar and Mexico, or his exclusive chocolate used to create Mogador - a signature milk chocolate and passion fruit flavor. The respect given to the raw ingredients allows an intensity of flavor where, in the opinion of Pierre Hermé, sugar is added only as a condiment and where salt gives balance. The boutique in Jeddah will offer Pierre Hermé Paris macarons such as Infiniment Rose, Crème Brûlée, Infiniment Pistache, as well as an intriguing range of chocolates, cakes and confectionery. The Mind, the Body and the Soul By Anousha Vakani
Most of us struggle with finding the balance between mind, body and soul as we’re often too busy with life to make time for ourselves. Ali Al Ghazzawi, a yoga instructor who works part-time at the Tamer Group, speaks to us about the benefits of yoga and the importance of making time for ourselves.
PHOTOS / REEM RIFAIE
If you want stillness, health or love, own the fact that you have time for it.
72 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2015
First of all, out of all the different forms of exercise and meditation, why yoga? Well, I have been in a vicious cycle of body image struggle so I decided to search for something holistic that gives me a deeper sense of my body and soul. The first time I tried yoga I had mixed feelings: on one hand I was highly attracted, there being something profoundly right about it. On the other hand there was a mysterious and ancient air about it that made me nervous. You feel better at the end of a session than before you began and life runs more smoothly when you maintain a consistent discipline. You start seeing things differently, with less distortion - which results in more peace of mind, better health, more enthusiasm for life, and an ever-growing sense of inner well-being.
I decided to search for something holistic that gives me a deeper sense of my body and soul.
Yoga originated in India about 5,000 years ago and was originally designed to be practiced by men. Yogis view that the mind and the body are one and that if given the right tools and environment, they can find harmony and heal. Balance: The body tends to stiffen the older you get. Yoga creates symmetry throughout your whole body, making you strong and flexible in a balanced way. Strength: In some sports, you tend to utilize only 10 to 15 percent of the body, whereas yoga provides a workout that covers every muscle,
joint and organ. The practice oxygenates the blood, creating more energy when you finish the exercise. Flexibility: Men commonly avoid yoga because they claim to lack flexibility. That’s a lot like saying you don’t exercise because you’re overweight. Like any form of exercise, becoming a confident yogi takes time,
effort, and plenty of practice. Sensitivity and SelfTrust: The above three things enhance your overall sensitivity. This is essentially what the discipline of yoga is all about. You practice using your intuition in the very specific arena of yoga asanas. In so doing you simultaneously exercise your body as you refine
your sensitivity to inner guidance. An everincreasing sensitivity, therefore, will initiate an easy self-corrective process that reinforces self-trust. Self-trust means we have the confidence necessary to follow through and pursue things that feel right. Easing the grip of body-consciousness will free your mind to discover itself.
DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 73
Since when have you been teaching yoga and where and when did you learn yourself? I have been teaching for 3 years. I went to pursue my teacher training diploma 3 years ago in a small town in Ireland called Cork, by my teacher Yogacharya Lalit Kumar. He has been practicing yoga since the age of 7 at traditional schools in India.
What age group makes up your yoga classes, and who would you recommend it to? Usually mid 20s – 40s. Yoga is for everyone, it does not matter how you look when you practice yoga. Whether you're at 120 kgs or a 68 kgs triathlete, a 10, 25 or 65-year old, yoga will push your personal boundaries by increasing your own flexibility,
endurance and muscle strength with a few modifications for each individual - and that’s the beauty of it! It’s a personal journey.
Please tell us a little about your yoga classes. I usually hold private sessions, so the location depends on the client’s preference. When I used to have a full time job, the classes were held either before or after working hours, but now I’m more open concerning timings. The classes have different levels suitable for all, so you can progress in a class that supports you as an individual. To ensure consistency and therefore incremental progress, all of the classes are taught with the modifications and the full expressions of the asanas to ensure all can participate and leave a class feeling nicely challenged.
Where do you work and how do you manage to make time for yoga while juggling work as well? As you practice yoga and meditation regularly, this subtle sense of feeling good gradually becomes so pervasive, so natural and genuine, so much a part of you that it carries over into the whole of your life. And it helps clarify your deepest longings, motivations and aspirations, thereby restoring optimism, hope, meaning and purpose to life. I’m lucky that I worked at Tamer Group. With its health-conscious environment and supportive management, I managed to practice my yoga journey during lunch breaks and teaching classes after or before working hours.
Yoga is for everyone, whether you’re at 120 kgs or a 68 kgs triathlete, a 10, 25 or 65-year old.

Lastly, what advice would you give to people who want to exercise but can't seem to fit it into their schedules? All of us had this conversation with ourselves: “If only I can get through this day/week/year, then things will be different. I’ll have more time for myself because the circumstances of my life will change to allow me to have more time.” And how many times has the circumstance passed, only for another to come along? There is a book called The Big Leap. In it, author Gay Hendricks presents time in a radically different perspective than most of us are used to. He says:
You’re where time comes from… Quit thinking time is ‘out there.’ Take ownership of time—acknowledge that you are where it comes from—and it will stop owning you. To stop being “time’s victim,” Hendricks says you should ask yourself a simple question: Where in my life am I not taking full ownership? If you want stillness, health or love, own the fact that you have time for it. Web: mangosalad.wordpress.com

NEVEEN AFIFI'S G R E E N
T H U M B
By Mohammed Mirza
Saudi agricultural engineer Neveen Afifi couldn't find a job in her own country, so she did the next best thing: she founded her own company. She is now the leading landscape artist in the Kingdom.
STAFF PHOTO / MOHAMED FAWZY
With women in the workplace becoming more common with each passing year largely due to female university graduates entering the workforce, many women have hit the glass ceiling right out of the gate. Neveen Afifi, Saudi Arabia’s first agricultural engineer, found her dreams of employment shattered when doors were shut following her graduation from Cairo University. After knocking on the doors of many governmental agencies, she received a negative response and was left disheartened. But this wasn’t the case for long, as her passion and belief in herself allowed her to do something out of the ordinary for a Saudi woman – she sets up her own agricultural design and landscaping company, Garden Roses.
76 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2015
As the country’s first female agricultural engineer, Afifi faced many challenges. Despite graduating from Cairo University and following it up with numerous diplomas, landing a job in her field was difficult. After months of struggle she landed a job in an agricultural company. But things didn’t go quite as planned for her. “The owner of the company closed the agricultural business and shifted into a real estate business, three years after my joining,” said Afifi. She then landed a contract to work with the Jeddah Municipality as project manager for the maintenance of South Jeddah’s gardens. Her employer, Abdul Malik Naghi, said, “Neveen is a hard working, good natured and well-behaved person who treats every single employee from laborers to top management with respect and dignity.”
Afifi's store, Garden Roses
He added, “The way she managed the entire process is just outstanding.” After her contract with the municipality finished she decided to work on her own, which led to the founding of her company, Garden Roses, which has become one of the country’s eminent homegrown garden design companies in a very short time. So what did Garden Roses do differently that allowed it to achieve this in a very short time?
Most home gardens are made in accordance to the women of the house,” said Afifi. “And these women find it awkward communicating with other men on what they want. That’s where I come in Indoor plant
— Neveen Afifi
Like any other entrepreneur Afifi had her fair share of challenges. She expressed her concerns over some official rules on companies. “The concerned ministries do a great job in organizing the work and it is good that they are encouraging nationals to work, but I find many rules applied by them difficult for new entrepreneurs.” She noted “the new rule of charging SR 2,500 on expat employees, along with the necessary Iqama and insurance fees adds up to around SR 4,000 per year. So if I have 10 employees I end up paying an additional SR 40,000 to their salary and this does not even include benefits such as housing and transportation.” She said: “I find this a bit unfair as such rules are applied to all companies irrespective of size and we can’t compete with big companies that have been running for so many years on these issues.” DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 77
She also had a difficult time in getting agricultural workers from abroad. “The concerned ministry was refusing to issue visas for agricultural workers.” She suggested ”they should understand that the need of an agricultural company is different from a fashion store or a supermarket.” Despite all the hurdles, she continues to run her company efficiently and has ensured that Garden Roses gives back to the community. One such project the company developed as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative was to design a local school garden. “The quality which Garden Roses provided us with, is very good and we found the employees to be very helpful,” said school Principal Hallah Al Quraishe. “Neveen’s creativity and love for her work is

perhaps what allowed her to build her own identity in such a small time frame.” Afifi has set up ambitious future plans for Garden Roses, including the development of a site for plant breeding that is environment-friendly, introduction of new methods to resist desertification and decrease pollution and spreading the culture of cultivation of windows, roofs and balconies among the masses. “I would also like to set up an educational garden where all the plants that are found in the Kingdom or are mentioned in the Qura'n are grown,” Afifi said. She hopes that this garden will be visited by school children, college students and city residents who in turn will be educated about the diverse world of plants.

HOW TO CHOOSE A PROFESSION
THAT BENEFITS YOU AND THE UMMAH By Talha Qayyum
How exactly do we choose a career from an Islamic perspective and a path that will benefit the Ummah? Below are some pointers that will help us to at least start thinking along the right lines and get the ball rolling in the way of Allah and his creation.
Follow Your Strength
While choosing a career, it is important that we follow our strengths. We should choose a path that is close to our hearts and one that we like. However, it is equally important that it is one that feeds off the strengths blessed upon you by Allah. More often than not, we would perform better at something we naturally enjoy as opposed to something that we have to make an effort to do. The better we perform our job, the better the position we will be in to benefit the Ummah.
Keep it Halal and Seek the Pleasure of Allah
While choosing a career path, always keep in mind that our aim is to gain the pleasure of Allah. Hence, we should choose a path which will enable us to remain steadfast on the teachings of Islam as detailed in the Qur’an or hadith and ones which will not only enable benefit of the Ummah but you as an individual will also gain the reward for the good deeds. Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty.
And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing. [Qur’an: Chapter 2, Verse 268]
82 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2015
Be an Independent Model
Set an example for other Muslims to follow. One of the common examples of this is banking where there were always confusion on whether the type of banking in place was halal or haram. As a result of this, Islamic banking was established, which ensured that the issue of interest along with others was taken care of. Similarly, many Muslim and some non-Muslim countries have come with the idea of having halal hotels where forbidden things like alcohol or non-halal meat is not served. These are examples of how we can choose a path that will enable us to establish businesses based on Islamic concepts.
Convert Your Profession to Ibadah
One of the most important points to remember is that we are rewarded for whatever action we take based on our niyyah or intentions. Narrated ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab: The Prophet (pbuh) said,
“The rewards (of deeds) are according to the intention, and everybody will get the reward for what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for Allah’s and His Apostle’s sake, his emigration was for Allah and His Apostle; and whoever emigrated for worldly benefits, or to marry a woman, then his emigration was for the thing for what he emigrated for.” [Bukhari].
Ask for Allah’s Help and Guidance
Last but not least, always pray to Allah for his help and guidance in all matters. Always pray salaatul Istikhara before taking any action so as to have the will and permission of Allah in every action you take and inshAllah you will be on the right path.
May Allah guide us to the right path and let us fulfill our responsibilities with dignity, honor and grace. Ameen.

TRAVEL TRENDS
SUPER SEVEN
for 2015 By Tharik Hussain
It’s the dawn of a new year and with that comes the question of where to go in the first quarter of this year? Are you going to fall back on old favorites like London? Or do you fancy somewhere different and unexpected in 2015? Why not join us as we gate crash anniversary celebrations in the heart of Europe? Or embark on a breathtaking walk through "Middle Earth" in Kiwi land? If 2015 is gonna be a year where you’re counting the halalahs then head for our budget destination and explore ancient Indian ruins and secret beaches for the price of a few riyals. If that’s not your cup of tea, then make this the year to go island hopping in the Sulu Sea or maybe it’s time to finally take your significant other on that romantic city break you’ve been promising.
Whatever your plans for 2015, Travel Trends has it covered in our Super Seven destinations, so don’t make a single reservation until you’ve read it – between us, we’ll make 2015 your most memorable year of travel yet.
KARNATAKA, INDIA – Beaches and temples on the cheap
Most of India feels cheap to the average traveler, but it’s the combination of evocative ancient temples and sun-kissed beaches all on a real shoestring that makes Karnataka Travel Trends top budget destination for 2015. The splendidly chaotic capitals of Bangalore and Mysore not only sit surrounded by tropical jungles that are home to tigers, monkeys and Asia’s largest population of elephants, but a four star hotel here will cost only SR 125 a night and a sit-down meal for two at a midrange restaurant is a mere SR 30. Then there are the beaches of Gokarna, where the sand is as soft and silky as those in Goa but without the overzealous parties in the background. For history buffs, a hike into the northern interior will reveal stunning Islamic ruins like the romantic Ibrahim Rouza in the Bijapur Fort.
86 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2015
NEW ZEALAND –
Adventure in Middle Earth
With the final installment of the Hobbit series out this year, New Zealand, the inspiration for Middle Earth is set to top many people’s list of 2015 travel destinations.
VIENNA, AUSTRIA – Top intellectual celebration There’s lots to see and do in this highly celebrated, cultural and intellectual capital of old Europe and getting there becomes a whole lot easier in 2015 with the completion of the Wien Hauptbahnhof station. One of the must-dos is to take a walk down the city’s famous Ringstrasse, built in 1865. It's a bold, grand and scarily expensive facelift that completely altered the look of this marvelous city. This year will see the Ringstrasse become 150 years old and even to celebrate special exhibitions, events and speeches have been lined up.
Around the corner there is an even grander celebration as the oldest University in the German world turns 650 this year. Walking through the hallowed halls of the University of Vienna is like tracking the marvels of western academia for the past six centuries. A guided tour of the faculties, libraries and gothic arcades will lead you through the achievements of at least 15 Nobel Prize winners - who are amongst the alumni - as well as the efforts of one Sigmund Freud. That is all before Travel Trends reminds you this is the city once home to Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, and Beethoven no less – four of the greatest masters of European classical music!
So as the crowds all head for Hobbiton (the set constructed by director Peter Jackson on Alexander Farm, North Island), Travel Trends suggests something a little more adventurous to really make the most of this stunning country — by doing the Milford Track, New Zealand’s most famous hiking trail. Walk across Tomb Raider style suspension bridges and carefully placed boardwalks as you take in spectacular mountain views inside the stunning Fiordland National Park. The 53.3-km route will take around four days to complete, starting at the head of glorious Lake Te Anau and ending at the nation’s highest waterfall, the cooling mist of Sutherland Falls. As great lovers of the outdoors, the Kiwis have installed outstanding facilities. DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 87
LITHUANIA –
Russian beaches and Baroque architecture
This little former Soviet republic is packed full of delightful surprises you just don’t associate with a Russian satellite and 2015 is the perfect year to give it the once over. This year Lithuania becomes the newest member of the Eurozone and finally joins the European family, making travel around the Baltic nation simpler than it’s ever been. Head south with your bucket and spade for the golden, sandy, endless beaches of the Curonian Spit as it reaches for Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast, behind which sit Europe’s largest moving sand dunes. From the beach you can head for Baroque in the capital city Vilnius where echoes of Prague abound through the beautiful architecture of one of the largest old towns in northern Europe.
Highest Sand Dunes in Europe, The Curonian Spit
PHILIPPINES – Tropical archipelago
Suddenly the Philippines is back on the global tourist map and with good reason too!
88 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2015
The Philippines will finally stand on its own two feet after a year-long recovery from the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan. Now more good news is on the horizon with rapid progress being made between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, who are active in the country’s south and finally want peace. The country’s potential stability will make for the perfect setting to explore what is easily the finest archipelago in South Asia boasting a phenomenal 7,100 islands. Set in and around the Sulu Sea all of them are like the very definition of idyllic, dreamy Tropical Island. Surrounded by stunning coral reefs off shores of sandy white beaches dotted with thatched huts, the only thing they’re missing is you lounging in a hammock under the palm trees.
RIGA, LATVIA – Top romantic city break Boasting the largest number of Art Nouveau buildings anywhere in the world, Riga has a wonderful combination of old world charm and new world innovation oozing through its streets. Once described as the Paris of the North, Riga is an ideal city break for love struck couples who want to walk hand in hand through the winding cobbled streets of its quaint old town beneath beautiful buildings that whisk you back to a romantic medieval yesteryear – look out for the Vinariuos Civitatis which claims to have been around since 1293!
ROCKY MOUNTAINS, USA – Anniversary bash
in the great outdoors A parade of Ford Model Ts will be among the highlights planned to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, USA.
The park is perfect for gentle treks alongside icy rivers that are overflowing with trout and boast woodland so high up that only the constant oxygen emissions from the forests of Douglas firs keeps the altitude sickness at bay. 2015 will also see art exhibitions, speeches, concerts and other mountainthemed activities in full swing throughout the park to celebrate its birthday. Jeddah’s HIDDEN GEM
Abdul Raoof Khalil Museum
Abdul Raoof Khalil Museum
By Mohammed Mirza
Opulent, ostentatious and ornate, the Abdul Raoof Khalil Museum is hard to pass by without noticing. The sizeable building is one of the most beautiful and illustrious examples of Saudi residential architecture in Jeddah. The museum houses outstanding exhibits that vividly chart Jeddah’s rapid progress from a tiny trading city to the Arabian metropolis it is today.
minarets and a brown-andcream colored façade, which makes it seem a bit out of place as it’s located in the posh part of the city that has mostly western style villas. The mesmerizing view of this building steals visitors away from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle in North Jeddah. The two-story tower stands close to Tahlia Street right next to Al Bayan Model School.
Opened to the public in 1985, the museum was built by history lover Abdul Raoof Khalil. This is the late Abdul Raoof’s third museum in the city.
The entrance arrays splendid artifacts that are from the Seljuk and Safavid dynasties of Central Asia. From silverware to copper and brass household items, the collections in the main corridor give a good glimpse of what a visitor is to expect inside. Adjacent to the corridor is the European room, which accommodates centuries-old artifacts from different corners
It is decorated with traditional rawasheen (Hijazi windows) like those found in the historic Al Balad district of the city. The structure has defining

of Europe. Large recreations of colonial era paintings, baroque décor and art nouveau heirlooms will transport guests to another era all together.
Hijazi doors are an example of elaborate arabic designs and patterns.
Ornate doors on display.
Next to it is another room which houses exhibits from the pre-Islamic era in the region. This room is one of the biggest attractions on the ground floor. The pre-Islamic history in the region dates back to 2,500 years; the artifacts in that room trace the various civilizations that inhabited the region. The exhibits in this room are mostly made out of alabaster, mud and copper. Put on display are well preserved coins that carry inscriptions of ancient kings from all around the Arabian Peninsula. As visitors walk up the grand staircase to the upper floor, they can’t help but be surprised at the European look of the museum, which contradicts its traditional Hijazi exterior.
A well preserved hand-written copy of the Qur'an.
The upper floor mostly contains monuments from the Islamic Golden Age until the Ottoman Era. On display is jewelry from distant corners of the Islamic empire, from Moghul India in the East to the far corners of North Africa in the west. The jewelry section leads up to a hall that has hand written Qur’ans that date back centuries. Also in the same hall is a military section where weapons of war such as curved daggers, swords, spears, shields and muskets are displayed. The final room on the upper floor, right next to the exit, is a rather eerie looking Chinese room. This room’s most notable feature is the art on the ceiling, which represents the ancient red colored Chinese clouds.
A grand exhibit in the lobby.
The museum truly reflects the essence of the Hijaz region, from the beach to the city and the oasis areas to the nomadic Bedouin culture. Abdul Rauf Khalil Museum manages to highlight artifacts that are centuries-old from various civilizations that made their presence felt in the region. Equally awe-inspiring from the outside as well as the inside, this is one of the best museums Jeddah has to offer. So tear yourself away from the glitzy malls on Tahlia Street and soak up a couple of hours to visit this one of a kind museum.

A TRIP TO HISTORIC SAUDI BRAVERY AND STRENGTH: AL MASMAK FORT By Sohila El Saadany
Al Masmak Fort was used by King Abdulaziz from 1902 to 1938 until he moved his court. The old and intricate style architecture of the building makes it stand out from the rest of the modern buildings of the city. Four high towers climb 18 meters each and encircle the corners of the

structure. They were employed as guarding stations for protection against intruders. The fort and its enclosed buildings are made of hard clay mixed with hay and grass. Those materials in particular The fort also has a 3.65-meterhigh gate made of strong palm tree trunks. At the center of the gate is an opening called Al Khokha, which is only big enough for one person at a time to pass through. This was used as a safety and defense mechanism in the past, as it is designed to allow people to walk through without opening the large door, and to keep enemies from barging in.

were chosen for their ability to act as insulators in both hot and cold weathers. The ceilings are elevated, and windows for ventilation are also placed really high. The fort contains many rooms, but the main rooms are called the Diwan. They are the sitting rooms made up of traditional Arabic seating. Each Diwan is now an exhibition that shows a wide array of captivating pictures of different eras of the Kingdom. The fort also includes a mosque and a drinking well; it houses a museum that displays antique weaponry, costumes, and farming artifacts. Al Masmak Fort is a place of splendor, it exhumes majestic beauty. The ancient walls tell a story of pride and glory. The fort holds a dear place in Saudi Arabian history, and would be the perfect destination for anyone who marvels at the past of the country.

Al Masmak Fort stands tall in Riyadh as a reminder of bravery and strength. It is a representative of Arabian architecture, culture and history all blended together. The castle was built in Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Rasheed's reign in 1865, but came under King Abdulaziz’s rule after the conquering of Riyadh.
