It is hard to pen the life of a man. Attempting to capture the true essence of a person beyond the facts, figures and milestones in a few good lines never does suffice. The task becomes even more daunting for a beloved figure of modern history and father of a nation. In the passing of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, the Kingdom lost a revered leader and a true visionary of peace in the region. We at Destination send our heartfelt condolences to the entire nation. We believe that his passing should be marked by the adoration he has so rightfully earned from his people and the world. Under his reign, we became a Saudi Arabia that’s brimming with cultural vitality, economic prosperity, diversity and a nation of fortitude. We at Destination find refuge in knowing that as our history turns to a new chapter, it does so with a righteous and wise leader at its helm. We pledge our allegiance and offer our prayers of support for King Salman bin Abdulaziz, Custodian of the two Holy Mosques, Crown Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz, and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef. In King Salman’s ascension to the throne, we envision a stable and brighter future for Saudi Arabia. We are at one with the nation in praying for Allah’s help in letting him continue the legacy of servitude. We echo and follow his footsteps— “to remain, with God’s strength, attached to the straight path that this state has walked since its establishment.” Enas Hashani

THE VISIONARY KING ABDULLAH The world is mourning the loss of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. Although the King has passed away, his legacy remains. By Sohila El Saadany
POLITICS
King Abdullah’s political success is carved in history. His political endeavors have cemented Saudi Arabia’s important world status. • His call for interfaith dialogue resulted in the convention of the World Conference on Dialogue in Madrid and a United Nations conference on Dialogue in 2008. He also established the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Program for Enhancing the Culture of Dialogue and Peace and was awarded with the UNESCO Gold Medal for his efforts. • He held a number of important international summits and meetings in the Kingdom like the Jeddah Energy Summit in 2008, the third OPEC Summit of Heads of State and the 19th Arab League Summit in 2007. • Women empowerment was one of the major highlights of the King’s political reforms. In his era, women participated in the Olympics, held positions such as prime minister and 30 women are now part of the Shura Council. He has also granted women the right to vote and run as candidates in municipal elections. 6

EDUCATION
Education was one of the leading concerns of the King for the sake of future generations. The educational sector makes up one-fourth of the total budget allocations. It amounts to SR 210 billion. • During his time, the Kingdom’s universities increased to 28 government universities and five private ones. He had also ordered the establishing of three new universities in north Jeddah, Bisha and Hafar Al Batin. The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Thuwal was a major milestone in the Kingdom’s educational plan. • The King also initiated the foreign scholarship program in 2005. More than 200,000 Saudis were sent to study abroad. An open university, which focuses on e-education and distant education has also been constructed. • Because the Qur’an should be one of the main focuses of education, the King issued a package that included SR 300 million for Islamic Dawa offices and SR 200 million for Qur’an memorization organizations.
HEALTH CARE

The King was always adamant to present the best health care for citizens. This sector was issued a huge part of the government funds with almost SR 86.5 billion spent yearly. • The King ordered setting up a number of medical cities including King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh, King Abdullah Medical City in Makkah, King Faisal Medical City in Abha, Prince Muhammad Medical City in Sakaka and King Khaled Medical City in Dammam. Eleven new private hospitals and 32 public ones were built under his supervision.
HUMANITARIAN
His humanitarian projects were always a priority to him as he aimed at bettering the lives of those in need. • He issued a decree increasing annual allocations for charitable organizations by 50 percent to reach SR 450 million. • The World Food Program awarded the King with the Champion in the Battle Against Hunger prize for his efforts and support in supplying food to the less fortunate.
ECONOMICS
King Abdullah’s economic achievements, among others, have earned him 11th place on Forbes Most Powerful People list in 2014. • A notable achievement is the expansion of the Grand Mosque in Makkah to reach a capacity of 2.5 million worshippers. The project cost SR 80 billion. • He succeeded in making Saudi Arabia a member of the World Trade Organization in 2005. • The King gave top priority to meet the housing requirements of citizens with allocation of SR 250 billion to construct 500,000 new housing units all over the Kingdom. • Establishment of King Abdullah Economic City, King Abdullah Financial Center, the Jazan Economic City and the City of Knowledge.
TECHNOLOGY
He implemented several technologically advanced projects to assure that the Kingdom stays up to date with the fast changing technologies of every day. • In 2012, he successfully made Saudi Arabia one of the 21 nations with all the components of e-readiness. The nation now offers effective electronic services for public and private sectors. • He supervised the establishment of technologically developed transportation projects such as the Haramain High-Speed Railway linking Makkah and Madinah. The government has awarded contracts worth $22.5 billion to carry out the Riyadh metro network as well. • Because of his great interest in technological advancements, the King oversaw the founding of the King Abdullah Institute for NANO techonology.
The nation has lost a great leader, may he rest in peace. He will live forever in the hearts of the citizens and through the visionary changes he has brought upon the Kingdom.

FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD Saving for Children The concept is simple:
The power of compounding OR Time Value of Money. This means that time has a powerful impact on the accumulation of money regardless of the growth rate (rate of return) it is invested at.
The most common reply was: After graduation (from college). That was alarming. I started saving for my children as soon as they were born. If you think this is crazy early, let me tell you, the savings can barely cover their college education!
For compounding to work, you need to: 1. Start now 2. Invest regularly 3. Be patient
Just to clarify, it is never too early to start saving, even for your unborn children. The reason behind this can be explained both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Secondly, investing your savings regularly at a constant (or almost constant) rate helps grow the capital and combat inflation. Inflation is the sustained increase in the general prices of good, services. As inflation rises, every Riyal you own buys a smaller percentage of a
good or service. When inflation goes up, the purchasing power of your money declines. For example: If the inflation rate is 2 percent annually, then a SR 10 item will cost $1.20 in a year. After inflation your Riyal can’t buy the same item at the same price. SMALL TIPS TO HELP YOU WITH KIDS’ MONEY HABITS • Talk to your children about money. • Play cashier games. • Depending on their age let them join you on grocery or shopping trips. Compare prices and keep receipts to go over at home. • Always keep a safebox for each child at home. • Reward them for good deeds. • Visit websites and YouTube videos on the topic. The Federal Reserve Bank education arm offers great learning content on its website. Use it! • Talk to them about the less fortunate and underprivileged people worldwide. Explain to them how blessed they are to have a home, clothes, food and education. Learning to appreciate does 50 percent of the job. The rest they will learn as they grow. The Author: Reem Asaad is an inspirational Saudi woman. She is a wife, mother, writer and financial adviser. Asaad was ranked the third most powerful Arab Woman in 2012 by Arabian Business Magazine. By Mohammed Mirza
Tell us about the role of the Khadija bint Khuwailid center.
We are basically a lobbying center for women empowerment. We facilitate between the private sector, the government sector and women. We try to look at regulations and see where they are biased to women. And we study them and make a case on why they should be changed and take them to the relevant person that can make the change either it be the royal court or the ministry. We follow up with them until the regulations come into effect. We then observe them closely to see if they are implemented properly and we do research to see whether there are any more obstacles faced by women. Basically we cover almost everything that has to do with the economical empowerment of women.
How is the center structured and what do you offer members?
It has its own independent board of directors. Our chairwoman is Princess Adila, King Abdullah's daughter. Within the center we have legal, research, program development and support
departments. We serve en masse and the affect is not only limited to members. When you change a regulations you are affecting women nationally and not just members of the chamber.
Can you tell us about some of the major obstacles women in business face in Saudi Arabia?
One of the major obstacles they face is the regulation. There is no clear coordination between the different ministries. Another obstacle women face is the lack of issuance of female visas in different industries, which if corrected will help raising the standards of Saudi women in some sectors.
How much of the total Saudi market do female entrepreneurs make up currently?
So far the businesswomen percentage has not grown in 10 years. We are still at 4 percent. It needs to grow.
Are there any particular sectors in which female entrepreneurs make a majority?
Beauty salons and tailor shops.
DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 23
We would like to see more women in real estate, construction and trading, There’s a lot of sectors that women themselves have not gone into, but it's not because of regulatory issues. It’s because they are just not interested in them yet.
How do you help promote businesses run by females in male-dominated industries? • We give support by making way for women in committees. • We now have women in the construction committee, the real estate committee and the business committee. In fact, Najwa Taher now heads the whole business committee. • Part of it is letting them in committees and the other part is supporting them in the regulations. For example, in 2008 we worked with the Ministry of Commerce and reformed a major regulation. Before that women were forbidden to have licenses in construction, real estate, contracting and services sectors. How does Now women can have licenses like any man in any sector.
24 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2015
Jeddah today compared to the city it was 10 years ago in terms of ease of doing business for women?
I think it has become easier for women around the country and not only in Jeddah. We are having women holding positions like vice chairman, vice mayor and deputy minister of education. We wish to see more women in leadership positions. In the past 10 years with the support of King Abdullah, women have started to take their place in society and become a part of national development.
What do you think the future holds for women in business across the country?
To be honest I would like to answer that question for both men and women to be fair. If the regulations don’t become easier and if the ministries don’t come to coordinate together, I think both men and women are going to have a very difficult time, and we may see a very big decline. But as of now I don’t see a difference for men and women in terms of starting a business.

4. Saudi Arabia’s First Purpose-Built, FIFA Standard Football Venue
Using the latest in large-venue technology from the grass on the pitch to a cutting-edge external design that promotes energy efficiency, King Abdullah International Stadium is comparable to its European counterparts.
5. An Arabian Stadium
Running around the stadium are a ribbon of tie-down braces and frames that highlight the mashrabiya screens, which carry elements of traditional Arabian architecture and design.
6. Second Largest Stadium in the Country
With a total capacity of 62,241 spectators, it is also the 10th largest stadium in the entire Arab World.
9. Made for Jeddah
The diamondpatterned screen mediates the breezes and provides shade, enabling the stadium to be naturally ventilated and making it ideal for the hot and humid Jeddah weather.
8. No Athletic Track
This may come as a shocker to many, but there is a good reason behind why an athletic track was not included in the stadium. It was ommited to allow spectators to sit closer to the actual pitch.
7. Costs of the Sports City
The estimated costs of the stadium stands at $560 million. This makes it one of the most expensive stadiums in the entire Arabian Peninsula.

THE UNIQUE SHAPE OF SAUDI ADVERTISING By Paul Springer
30 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2015
A Brief History of Saudi Advertising
The nuances of Saudi Arabia’s advertising industry today still reflect how it first established in the region. The Kingdom’s entrepreneurial spirit was evident in the mid-20th century, when trades people positioned their goods and advertising messages for pilgrims along the road to Makkah. However, communications in the form of press and television advertising started much later.
COURTESY PHOTO
Anyone traveling through Saudi city centers for the first time is always struck by the vast array of billboards. From digital skyscrapers to the bridges, “megacoms” (backlit billboards) and “mupis” (billboards mounted on long poles), there are more billboards per mile along city highways than anywhere else in the world. Brands spend proportionately more on outdoor and mall advertising in Saudi Arabia than in other Middle Eastern country. The Kingdom’s billboard landscape is therefore like no other.
Press
In 1975 Tihama, a Saudi advertising and PR group, struck the first deal for national press to carry brand commercials. Newspapers including Arab News and the magazine Asharq Al Awsat pioneered the way for print advertising. Such was their success that the demand for ad-supported publications grew — from brands keen to advertise; from advertisers directly and from consumers buying more specialist publications. Global brands were so eager to enter into Saudi’s economy that the government encouraged the creation of more advert-carrying publications. This drive to expand advertising in the 1980s extended to outdoor advertising, and the uninhibited growth of print and outdoor media encouraged more major brands to the territory.
Broadcast
In contrast, television and radio advertising developed at a slower pace. Prince Faisal first proposed Saudi Arabia’s first national television station in 1965 but public service advertising aside, it wasn’t until 1986 that the first privately sponsored Saudimade commercial was aired (for Procter & Gamble’s Tide). By then viewers were accessing channels from other GCC countries and were already familiar with the wit and style of pan-Arabic commercials. There is another reason why Saudi’s TV commercials look generically Arabic; Saudis expenditures on luxury goods was so high that it became a focus for multinational brands, who encouraged their existing advertising networks to set up in the region.
1986 Tide Phootage
Today, most major international advertising agencies including Ogilvy Memec, BBDO and Leo Burnett, run offices in major Saudi cities. Alongside this, producers such as Procter & Gamble and Unilever set up graduate training programmes for local staff, and so developed the first generation of the pioneering communicators who, in turn, went on to instigate their own Saudispecific communications firms such as such as 3-Points, Fullstop and Focus Advertising – creators of Saudia’s famous charging horse.

The Futures Bright for Saudi Advertising Today local and multinational agencies coexist with a new breed of specialist online advertiser. Young Saudis have real opportunity to make a name for themselves. Some already have – U-Turn, the multichannel online platform, has over 2 million subscribers and award-winning content while 77 Media creates social networks and conversations around world-leading cosmetics and pharma brands. The region boasts its own specialist Coms Uni – The Jeddah College of Advertising, to produce the next generation of media talent.

THE BUZZING MINDS OF JEDDAH’S ART HIVE A work of art is not only about the message it conveys, but also about the artist behind it. Explore the minds of three of the most prominent artists in Jeddah. By Sohila El Saadany
Dana Awartani knew she wanted to become an artist at the age of 14. Not only does she possess the talent, but also the necessary qualifications of an artist. She has a foundation degree in Art and Design from Central St. Martins Byam Shaw, bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design and a master’s from the Prince's School of Traditional Arts. Awartani works with different media ranging from paint to wood and ceramics. 34 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2015

DANA AWARTANI
She believes that different media “bring a very different quality to the art. Using them gives me a chance to take them a step further than just works on paper.” She is especially interested in Islamic art. She regards the art as “a beautiful window into culture and religion.” She, however, hopes Islamic art progresses because she sees it as an “underappreciated art form.” She has showcased her work in national and international exhibitions. She is a featured artist in Athr Gallery and worked with Edge of Arabia enterprise. She has also participated in START art fair in London and in the 55th Venice Biennale. She said that the aim of any artist is “to show his or her work in a variety of exhibitions locally and internationally. It’s a chance to promote and gain recognition as a professional.” Awartani encourages the participation of Saudi artists in international projects because “that really draws interest and recognition to what is going on in the Saudi art scene. Even though art in the kingdom is in its infancy it has seen a dramatic improvement and there is a lot going on with it now.” She aspires to improve and produce more work because “that’s the nice thing about being an artist, you can never stop learning and developing, there is so much knowledge out there for you to seek.”
Society needs to protect and value its own traditions — Dana Awartani

NASSER AL SALEM Nasser Al Salem has taken Arabic font to a whole new level. His love for calligraphy blossomed at a young age “in elementary school, my friend and I would compete by writing a word in Arabic calligraphy, then we would make the class vote which looked better.” His journey in calligraphy did not officially start until middle school, however, when he took classes in Makkah. Even though he studied architecture in college, he still participated in calligraphy workshops and projects and won a Calligraphy and Fine Arts competition and took second place at the Kingdom’s National Calligraphy competition. He also became an active member of Saudi Arabia’s Arts and Culture Group. Al Salem’s work transcends the traditional sense to portray new twists. He merges geometrical and architectural shapes. Al Salem believes that “Arabic calligraphy has not reached the end of its development, it is able to evolve further.” 36 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2015
He managed to expose the Arabic font internationally with his exhibitions outside of KSA as part of Edge of Arabia enterprise in Istanbul in 2009 and at the Hajj exhibition in 2012 at the British Museum, which later acquired his work “Zamzam.” In 2012, he opened and sold out his first solo exhibition “And it Remains” at Athr Gallery. He encourages the participation in local and international exhibitions since it “is important of course because it enriches culture and raises social awareness. After all, art is a reflection of society.” Nasser Al Salem stresses the importance of calligraphy and says, “similar to how Arabic calligraphy used to reflect social life in the past, it should tell of our lives today.”

BASMAH FELEMBAN Basmah Felemban is a self taught graphic designer who is pursuing her master’s degree in Islamic and Traditional Art from the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London. Art was not her first career choice as a child, “I thought I was a poet when I was 9, an IT specialist at 13 and a graphic designer at 15,” she said. “So it just happens gradually; discovering what you love.” Felemban’s first work “Jeem,” debuted at the British Museum. It was inspired by a poem she had read about the science of Arabic letters. Her work incorporates Islamic art sometimes because she is interested in the symbolism in it. “I was fascinated by the balance of design and science and how they can reflect something like poetry and philosophy.”

Her work was displayed internationally like in the 55th Venice Biennale, at Art International Istanbul, and at Dubai’s Art Space. It is also displayed in Athr Gallery, Jeddah. “Participating in exhibitions to me is an opportunity to see people’s reaction to the work and their interpretation,” she said. “When I see the work in an exhibition, it automatically puts it up for criticism and that makes me somehow see it from a different perspective.” As for Felemban’s future, she says,“ I’m focusing on stuff that relates to my career but not artworks necessarily, it’s more on my studio and Saudi Street Art, which is a project I founded a few years back.”

BRANDING’s new concept
‘Today branding is a must in order to differ and win’ Ziyad Oragnji has written and published “Al Eesam,” the first Arabic book to discuss all aspects of branding. The book covers the history and concepts of branding. “Al Eesam,” is the translation of the word “branding” in Arabic. Organji coined the word using proof from the Qur’an. 42 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2015

The company aims at “creating a difference.” In-Design has worked with several big names such as Goody, Al Jazira Bank, Shemagh Desar and the General Authority of Civil Aviation and that is just to name a few.
“I found there is a need for Arabic content that talks about brands and branding principles and explains the differences between them.”
The book is now used as a reference, and has reached different Arab countries. It is available at Jarir and Lomar stores and can be ordered via Jamalon. It will also be used by Umm Al Qura University soon. Apart from authoring the pioneer book of branding in the Arab World, Ziyad Organji is a managing partner in In-United Designs Co.
Saudi marketers realize great branding as a core value to their businesses. I encourage people to do what others deem impossible because that is what creativity is. — Ziad Organji
COURTESY PHOTO/ PICTURE ON TOP
It was important for Organji to trace the timeline of branding from its beginnings because “our knowledge of a thing’s history makes us understand it correctly and strengthens our bond with it.” The book offers several success stories that depict the emergence of certain brands, the ideas behind them and the people who worked hard on them.
Organji also recounts his meeting with Apple’s logo designer Rob Janoff in Chicago. The two discussed Janoff’s success with Apple. At the end of the meeting Organji presented him with a Desar shemagh as a cultural gift.
In 2010, Organji started the “Think Branding” initiative to raise awareness about branding in the Arab world starting from Saudi Arabia to GCC and the rest of the Arab countries where he believes that the understanding of brands and branding is not as clear as advertising. He also created the “Branding Wheels” system which sets “clear scientific approaches and guidelines” to branding between the client and agency, as he explains.

Young Majed Fitaihi has accomplished something admirable. At 16 years old, he turned his dream into reality after writing and selfpublishing his debut novel, “A Dreamless World.”
When he was 15 he made a major decision. “I decided that I actually wanted to sit down, day in and day out, to complete a full novel.” Fitaihi kept his novel a secret and did not reveal his creation until it was finalized and ready to be published. On Dec. 11, “A Dreamless World” or a “love letter to the dream world” as he described it, had come out to light. The fictional story is set in the ancient Roman era in Pompeii at a time where dreams were dying, and it is up to Oppius and Remus to preserve them.
My grandmother, may she rest in peace, was the one who showed me the greatest support, love and care.
Fitaihi can relate to the hardships young people go through. He encourages them to pursue their passion no matter how hard. “It may seem like a long way to go when you are a child,” he said, “but in no time at all, success will surprise you out of nowhere.” He intends to work even harder and pursue writing as a profession until he becomes an accomplished author like his role models Ray Bradbury, Stephen King and George Orwell. He is currently working on another novel, “‘The Room For Vision,’ which is set in a dystopian future where a surreal ability to see the world through other people’s eyes exists.” He dreams of turning his books into blockbuster movies. “To see one of my creations on the big screen would be unimaginable.”
Majed Fitaihi has proven that no dream is too big to come true and no one is too young to start. His novel can be found at Little Book in Red Sea Mall and Stars Avenue, Amazon.com and will soon be available at Virgin Megastores and Jarir Bookstores.

HEAD OVER HEELS
for Maisah Sobaihi Maisah Sobaihi takes Western and Arab audiences behind the closed doors of women’s lives in Saudi Arabia. By Sohila El Saadany
When asked about her process to reveal the issues comically she said, “I try very hard to find those who have been through the experiences I am trying to depict. First, I need to gain their trust and second I need to listen carefully to them so that the depiction I create is realistic, I focus on reflecting what I hear in a fictional format.” She has been the first Arab to take on the Edinburgh stage. She offers the West insight into Saudi women’s lives. Despite the different façade of women living in the Kingdom, she wittingly displays how similar women in both cultures think. 46 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2015
“I have been lucky that the audiences that have seen the play have been wonderful, regardless of the geography,” she said. “As for the humor, I try to be sensitive to allow for a frame of reference, and I sometimes introduce what is funny here in Saudi to the West.” Sobaihi has succeeded in uncovering a private society that has placed a lot of its
issues under the umbrella of taboo. “Privacy is part of being human, many of us search for it and use it to gain peace,” she said. “Covering up issues is a different matter and is also part of being human. Sometimes the issues we face are very painful and sometimes even scary.” Privacy is encouraged when it comes to divorce in the Kingdom. However, she believes that this is about to

Laughter is the best medicine, but is it the best means of uncovering the issues of Saudi women? Maisah Soabihi thinks so. In a culture that reveres privacy, being a theater performer who discusses social issues is a bold move. Being a female performer who talks of sensitive problems facing females is even bolder. Sobaihi’s one-woman show “Head over Heels” uses comedy to communicate what Saudi women go through. Her performance delivers serious matters in a lighthearted manner.

change and notes, “I think divorce is an issue that is being addressed, and we are reading more and more about the increase of divorce in Saudi Arabia. Divorce is a painful reality and I believe as a society, we will find a suitable way to address it, a way that will respect people’s privacy and allow them to communicate the experience to those that can be of support.” Recently women have been setting higher goals for themselves and becoming more ambitious, especially those of the younger generation. “In general,” she said. “I think it is always a good idea to move with a plan when having ambitions and have the goals crystal clear. Independence goes hand in hand with responsibility, so if we make sure the two are shaking hands at all times, society usually benefits and therefore becomes accommodating.”
Just because her show explores problems of women in relation to their lives with men, does not mean Sobaihi is attacking the latter. She said, “I had the chance to ask a male member of the audience this question: ‘Do you feel I am bashing you and other men?’ He smiled and replied; ‘No’ and he explained that the play helped him understand better some matters his wife used to bring up in conversation.”
Sobaihi busts a lot of stereotypes as she performs in the West, she believes it to be a duty to set the record straight on the image West has of Saudi women. She adds, “The more we attempt to bring forward a perception through art the more we will be viewed in a brighter light.”

After almost six years in a tiny room on an offshore oil field near Kuwait working a maintenance job, Essam Al Ghamdi had an epiphany. “Let me tell you, if there’s a time to rethink life choices, it’s when you’re in a shoebox in the middle of the ocean,” Al Ghamdi said. “I quickly realized that I wasn’t having very much fun doing something that doesn’t interest me, something that doesn’t challenge me or excite me. In my spare time – and trust me, I had plenty of it – I wrote a few albums and worked on a few games until I finally built up the confidence to quit my job to pursue my passions.” His music work is done during Batman hours.
said. “And since I don’t play a particular genre, I didn’t want to box myself within the naming confines of a particular genre like electro or trip-hop.” And it works. It’s hard to pinpoint what genre Al Ghamdi’s music really is, but that’s part of the fun of listening to it. And the thought of an adorable kitten dressed in James Bond attire dropping beats is certainly a compelling one. Colleague Ahmed Abdelsamea described Al Ghamdi as a true professional.
And like all good superheroes, he picked a catchy moniker to front his music. Agent Whiskers rolls off the tongue quite nicely.
“Essam always knows what to do with music,” Abdelsamea said. “When I ask him about music with a certain feeling or experience, he comes with a really interesting initial draft where I can give him feedback and he tunes it. He is really fast in editing the music.”
“The way I see it, expressing myself through art should be raw, reckless and fun,” he
His defining moment was in his teens. Growing up in Virginia, during the ’90s
he found himself succumbing to the teen angst movement of nu-metal bands, namely Korn. Being the easily influenced lads they were, Al Ghamdi, now 29 years old, and his friends vowed to create the loudest, most angst-ridden nu-metal band the world had ever seen. “We were three ambitious and surprisingly thorough little rockers,” he said. “We didn’t even have instruments and we’d already decided who was playing what. On top of all that, we decided that the band would contain five members despite the fact that we were missing two people. True forward-thinkers, we were.“ Over the next decade he taught himself guitar and drums, played in numerous bands in live shows around the world, and participated in recording sessions. By 2011, Agent Whiskers was born.

His inspirations?
“Musically speaking, I’d say mostly Muse and Radiohead,” Al Ghamdi said. “Muse’s melodic style spoke to me at a time when I was developing my sound on guitar so it’s almost ingrained within my musical DNA. Radiohead taught me to think outside the box and not to rely on the same time signatures and tempos so often.”
To date, he’s composed music for six video games, three of which are available on the App Store and Google Play Store. He was also nominated for his work on Atomic+ at the 2013 Indie Prize Awards in Amsterdam. But Al Ghamdi doesn’t plan on staying away from dabbling in his passion on a full time basis for long.
“I see myself eventually taking music up full-time. There’s no shortage of melodies in my head and I still haven’t had my reggae phase. I’m going to be making music for a long time. Whether it remains a side career or becomes my life, I’m going where my music takes me.”

SHAWERMATAC YOUR SHAWERMA IS IN SAFE HANDS Proud of its high quality and consistency in taste in each of its 17 outlets, today fast-food shawerma brand Shawermatac serves as a benchmark for all other shawerma outlets across the country. In its state-ofthe-art centralized food production facility everything found at each of its outlets is prepared, from the sauces and salads to the final shawermas on the skewers. The 300-square-meter facility processes tons of meat annually. Completely cut off from conditions outside, temperature and humidity controlled chambers are installed with cameras, all of which are closely monitored. In the first chamber, A-grade Angus Beef and high quality imported chicken used in the final shawermas are all are stored in a chilled state. Depending on the daily requirements, the meat is then made ready for marination.
Consistency and quality control is within our core business value.
— CEO Wassim Halwani
64 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2015 ADVERTORIAL
A result of intensive research on herbs and spices, Shawermatac developed their unique marination recipe. As the marination process begins, all the herbs and spices are blended progressively to increase the tenderness and taste of the meat.
Trained staff then place the meat on skewers, which are sent to a giant cold storage where they are packaged for shipping. The temperature in the cold storage is maintained at 0°C, carefully controlling the risk of superficial freezing. In an adjacent chamber fresh vegetables are chopped and salads are prepared. In the same chamber packs of sauces are readied and stored. An inhouse bakery prepares cakes and Arabian sweets served at different outlets.
As most desserts are egg-based, a high-tech machine sterilizes the egg while keeping it in its raw form. It is used to ensure the eggs are safe for consumption.
All items the facility produces are then dispatched to branches across the region each day in Shawermatac’s specially designed food vans. Meanwhile, all the equipment are steam-washed and sanitized to be ready for the following day.
Shawermatac has set waves of change through the shawerma food industry in the country ever since it first launched in 2000. The brand evolved from a group that has been operating in the food industry since 1830.
As more and more consumers demand food to not only be economical, but also healthy, tasty and safe, there is a steady increase of national and international standards for food safety and public health. RYAN’S BURGER – Ryan's journey and how it all happened. 66 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2015

REVIEW
By Ahmad Mesawa
The History of Ryan’s Burger
Ryan Danish is a local cafeteria that specialized in nothing specific when it opened. It was simply a cafeteria that sold anything people asked for, from tea in paper cups, local style sandwiches, to burgers. Ryan decided to take it to the next level after noticing the new burger trend in town. He found himself a partner and the Burger Shop was in business. Burger Shop witnessed good business until the labor issue erupted in 2013. In October 2013, Ryan’s Burger opened. Ryan’s Burger offers homemade items, from sauces, crunchy fries, burger buns, beef burgers, and even diet beef burgers using lean beef, brown buns and low fat sauce, chicken burgers, hot dogs and for dessert, rich Italian-style chocolate macaroons.
Burger World Concepts
There are two major concepts when it comes to the world of burgers. The first is concentration on flavor of the meat without manipulation. This concept relies on the quality of the beef, the ratio of certain cuts and fat content. The second concept concentrates on other elements in the burger like the spices, condiments and toppings. This concept doesn’t have to rely on beef cuts since the spices will take over the flavor. Neither of these concepts is wrong. It’s just thinking outside the box that introduces us to new flavors. I recommend keeping an open mind for everything new.
How I Like My Burgers
Having said that I have to mention that I prefer to have my burgers without lettuce. Just the patty, cheese, the special sauce, maybe onions and pickles at the most. This way helps me to identify the flavor profile of the beef, the sauce and the buns.
The Review
The patty was tender, mildly juicy but it can use a little bit more fat. The beef was mildly spiced with unique characteristics. The homemade buns were flaky, the sauce has a vinegar kick – it was a perfect complement to the burger. The crunchy fries are breaded potato sticks, the texture wasn’t necessarily crunchy. It was a little bit firmer than the usual fries. The atmosphere is simple yet vibrant and joyful. The presentation and packaging are distinctive. Ryan Danish is an entrepreneur who deserves thumbs up for his hard work. Location: Al Kayal St.

SHAKE IT OFF YOUR GUIDE TO CREAMY GOODNESS
Every once in a while you find yourself craving the coolness of a milkshake. The delicious flavor of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and more, blended with milk and crushed ice. Top that with whipped cream and maybe a cherry and you are ready for the indulgent sweet delight. By Sohila El Saadany
Tala Shake
Tala offers three types of date shakes, sukary, burahy and ajwa. Sukary shake is the day's pick; it is made out of sukary dates blended with milk and ice cream. What comes as a surprise about this shake is that it is not as thick as expected, and its taste is even throughout. However, it is the sweetness of the shake that is predictable; dates are already nature’s candy and are packed with fructose. Mix that in with ice cream.
Shakelicious
The Snickers’ shake from Shakelicious does not go down smoothly. The shake does not really give the taste of the chocolate as much as it does the peanuts. The peanut chunks are overwhelming; each sip requires chewing rather than simply gulping. Despite that, it is still a delectable treat that can perfectly cool you down on a hot day. Marcel’s
Marcel’s strawberry shake is simply a delight. The flavor can be stronger if more strawberry is added, since it is currently somewhat overpowered by the milk. This is a minor setback that can be overlooked because of the drink’s presentation; the shake is topped with whipped cream and drizzled in savory strawberry syrup. This drink is the middle ground between “so thick it is undrinkable” and “too light to be a shake.” Location: Tahlia St. Price: SR 22 Thickness: Frothy Presentation:
Milkshake Facts
Milkshakes came to be the drinks known now in the 1900s. Before electric blenders, milkshakes were a hand-shaken mix of crushed ice and milk, sugar and added flavors. Some people ordered them with ice cream on top. They were called “Frosted” in the 1930s.
Shake Time
Shake Time offers a variety of chocolates and biscuits to be made into shakes according to your preference and to which sweets make a good combination. The shake examined here is the Ferrero Rocher one. Caramel syrup is dripped into the cup before the shake is poured in; it improves the shake’s appearance but does not add to the taste. The chocolate in the shake is very intense that it subdues the milk. More balance between the milk and the chocolate is preferred so that the result is an actual milkshake not a Ferrero Rocher “thickshake.”
The tasty drink didn't change much!

CAPPUCCINO GRAND CAFE
At the Equestrian Club next to Park Hyatt Hotel we find the first international branch of the Majorcan Cappuccino Grand Café. I got to know this restaurant chain when I moved to Majorca Island in 1998. I first visited Cappuccino in Jeddah in 2011 and I enjoyed the nice variety of “pa amb oli” that they served with turkey ham on top, cheese or both. But my most recent experience in the restaurant was quite different. The “pa amb oli” have disappeared from the menu and now a very much international cuisine has taken its place. On the vegetarian side we find a Roca salad with pear and Parmesan cheese as a starter. The taste of the pear with the Roca lettuce merges very well. The Parmesan cheese slices would taste better if they made them thinner though. MY ADVICE tell the kitchen staff to just toss some pistachios to avoid getting a salad all covered in nuts.

Rozana Al Banawi is a life adviser, and wanted to be one even before she knew such a profession existed. As a child, her pretend games involved visiting people with a bag full of stationary, books and games and talking to them about “important matters” and making art. The important matters she talks about with her clients now are life purposes, values and dreams, the art they create include journal entries and life designs and the games she uses are visualizations and “art for the heart” tools.
She majored in educational psychology at Effat University because she “loved learning how people learned.” She was then accepted into a Counseling Children and Young People program at the University of Nottingham, but made a switch to a different program, Human Relations. She fell in love with “exploring and understanding how humans relate to one another.” From there, in 2009, her journey as a family manager coach began. She returned to Saudi Arabia and worked as a job adviser and then registered with the Coaches Training Institute in London and was a certified professional co-active coach (CPCC) in a year. She is currently doing their 10-month Leadership Retreat Program
in Spain and says her niche has emerged as “leadership development.” When asked if she can describe what she does, she says she struggles to answer this question as you can only understand when you experience it for yourself. So she asks her 10-year old son, Eissa, to explain: “You help people who want to be positive, change, grow and find peace and they want to learn how to solve their struggles.” She adds that she prefers to use the word serve instead of help because “serving indicates bringing my whole human self to the work process, I don’t just help as a professional. It must be authentic work.”

If I ever stumble upon a genie's lamp, I will use one of my wishes to make duplicates of Rozana Al Banawi. She is wholehearted, inspiring and transformational. With each encounter, the women held their heads up higher, their self confidence increased and their personal aspirations grew. I swear by Rozabee's coaching methods and personal touch. — Noura Al Turki Executive Manager of Human Resources and Social Responsibility, Nesma Holding Company
To further explain her role in society she says, “People want to lead fulfilled lives, and that needs work, help and consistent effort. So by co-leading their lives, I ensure they have a growth-buddy to support them, hold their agendas for them and hold them accountable on their journeys of transformation.” Al Banawi offers services in human relations and leadership development, including consultations, individual coaching, training and teaching and workshop facilitation. “I offer referrals to external professional services that could have the potential to 74 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2015
enrich and complete a client’s experience,” she said. “I believe in collaboration as a human community. This helps us flourish and opens possibilities.” Al Banawi explains that she recommends her services to “anyone who is ready for change, eager to bring transformation to their life and takes responsibility for their world. The client and I design our alliance, which means talking about our relationship and discussing how we want to work together to best serve the client; the power of coaching lies in the relationship that we co-create, not in the coach myself.”
She said the best life advice she ever received was from Art Shirk who said, “when you’re feeling disconnected from those around you and 'Being in your head,' that’s exactly when you need to be around people and not distance yourself further.” Al Banawi noted that Shirk “helped me focus on having the connection that I wanted, and finding the compassion and courage needed to work on developing myself further.” Email: info@rozabee.com Web: rozabee.com @rozabee @roza_bee

'THE ROAD TO MAKKAH' THE STORY OF MUHAMMAD ASAD An autobiography of Muhammad Asad, "The Road to Makkah" tells a life story that sometimes sounds so farfetched as to befit a Hollywood movie. It’s an incredible story – and it’s all true. By Maryam Al Dabbagh
He became a journalist and traveled to the Middle East, writing as a foreign correspondent for several illustrious European newspapers about his travels and adventures throughout the region. He found that Islam’s tradition embraced both the rationalism his mind instinctively craved, and the deeper sense of spirituality and meaning yearned for by his heart, which he found lacking in the atheism of his European contemporaries. After much contemplation, he embraced Islam by 1926 and took the name of Muhammad Asad.

Born Leopold Weiss at the dawn of the 20th century in what was then the AstroHungarian Empire, this descendant of a long line of Jewish rabbis undertook religious studies at a very young age, studying the Talmud and the Old Testament and becoming proficient in Hebrew and Aramaic before he became disillusioned with religion as a young man, wandering aimlessly around 1920s Europe.
Through a chance meeting at a Madinah library with then-Prince Faisal of Saudi Arabia, he was introduced to King Abdulaziz, whom he accompanied for several years – and even undertook a secret mission for him. Traveling to Libya in 1930, he met the Lion of the Desert himself, Umar Al Mukhtar, who was conducting his brave opposition to the Italian colonizers of Libya. He also met Muhammad Iqbal, Pakistan’s great philosopher, and collaborated with him on the vision of a truly Islamic state. Although undoubtedly exciting, the main appeal of “The Road to Makkah” does not lie in its tales of swashbuckling adventures. Rather, it is the thoughtful contemplation on a life well lived, and a philosophy beautifully crafted, that is the true value of this book. All in all, this book tells the truly epic tale of the journey of a heart and mind. In a world where East and West still view each other with suspicion, the life of a man whose identity comprised of equal parts Muslim and Jew, Arab and European will never cease to be a shining source of inspiration.
Time Revelations By Sohila El Saadany
Stephen Hawking once said, “Time evolved into a personal concept, depending on the observer who is measuring it.” So what does your measurement of time reveal about you? This is not one of those cliché time management pieces; this is a very brief account on how your utilization of time makes you appear.
Responsibility Time can be used as an initial measurement of how responsible you are.
Impulse Taking the time to think things through or rushing into them are constant battles.
Procrastination
Time can also be a very strong indicator of whether you are an active person or you are more of a procrastinator.
Time is a measure of everything. How you use it directly reflects and affects you, so try to use it wisely and remember,
Making sure you turn up at your appointments on time and delivering your tasks according to deadlines is bound to show whether you respect the concept of time or not. The amount of time you take making a decision no matter how small or trivial is a reflection of your own personality as well. Putting off duties on account of more time and then finishing them off just before deadline is never a wise decision. And even though everyone seems to do that at one time or another, it is still an indication of procrastinator.
Time is what we want most, but what we use worst. — William Penn

WITH YOUR CHILD Stories are powerful means of conveying messages to children; they are excellent tools of healthy parenting. By Dawood Vaid
Here are some stories that can be used: 1. From Surat Al Kahf, the story of the man with two gardens (Moral: Don’t be greedy and conceited). 2. Story of Prophet Musa and Khidr (Moral: Allah gives wisdom to whom He wills). 3. Story of Surat Al Fil (Moral: Allah has power over all things no matter how strong they appear).
Try to stay off TV and video games The effects of reading are more beneficial than those of cartoons and soaps, but controlled TV can be used to explore certain things or initiate curiosity in your child. 1. You can allow them to
watch a cartoon from a different culture, that of Tokyo for example, and then ask them to point out the differences between his/ her culture and the other, as in the houses shown or the languages spoken. 2. Get a book that gives
information about the respective cartoon. This way the child learns more and has more freedom of creativity. 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2015

READING
The stories in the Qur’an can be used to teach the children valuable lessons and morals.
Exploring realities of life through stories Children can understand issues like death, divorce and greed through stories. They can also learn about matters such as friendship by reading about the Prophet (PBUH) and Abu Bakr. Reading to your children can also help develop their language and speech.
Here are some tips. 1. Reading aloud to enhance vocabulary. Reading to your kids teaches them new words; it also enriches their abilities to express themselves.
2. Use the “five-finger-rule” Ask your children to open any page of a book to read. Every time they come across a word they do not know, they should hold up a finger. If they get to five fingers before they finish reading the page, the book is too hard.
3. Pick stories that develop curiosity, creativity Consider and imagination. reading the story of Isra’ and Mi’raj,
You will come the miraculous across a lot of night journey stories throughout of the Prophet (PBUH) the journey, and this will rejuvenate your child’s curiosity and imagination.
Read-a-thon: Making reading a daily practice
STAFF PHOTO/ YASMINE OUF
You can make reading together an evening task; you can reward him/her for every book he/she finishes. Getting a membership to a library or book club will help in planning a successful read-a-thon. It is preferable to discuss what your child has learned from reading. This will engage your child and develop a sense of morality in him/her. It will also enhance his/her sense of good listening. Reading aloud to your children can help them actualize the noble concept of obeying and acting upon sermons that call to goodness it will also help them get closer to Allah.
Finally, remember the precious Qur’anic concept of “We hear and we obey.” [Qur’an: Chapter 2, Verse 285].

Seychelles
Smashing, Superb, Sensational
Seychelles Islands are a haven for those who revere nature and desire relaxation. We at Destination Magazine were lucky enough to experience the islands and witness their splendor first hand. By Sohila El Saadany
They are the most ancient mid-ocean islands in the world. They make up an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, northeast of Madagascar. We at Destination reached Mahe’, the main island, which is four hours from Dubai. The airport in Mahe’ immediately gave off an island vibe since it was small and covered with palm trees; it did indeed feel like a cozy island on its own. From there, we took a small plane to Praslin, the second largest island at Seychelles. The crystal clear water with little patches of land seemed unreal below us. Praslin’s airport is also quite tiny; it overlooks the shore, so stepping out of it made us long for a dive right there. On our way to the Raffles Praslin Seychelles hotel, we marveled at the island’s artistic milieu and noticed how utilities were basic since electricity is used at low voltage. You will not find air conditioning or bright lights. No jet skis are available in an effort to protect the marine environment. There are no sprawling shopping centers so a peaceful mindset can be maintained. After all we were 86 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2015
on a mission to escape the city’s hustle and bustle. We arrived at Raffles Praslin Seychelles hotel, which is part of the luxurious, and awardwinning Raffles Hotels and Resorts Company. The hotel contains 86 villas, all with private plunge pools. Thirty of those overlook the ocean, and we grabbed one of them. Each villa also contains an open-air balcony with sundeck beds and an outdoor sheltered pavilion with a day bed and dining table. The hotel offers a wide variety of facilities; one of the best is the Raffles Spa, which is the largest spa in Seychelles. It promises an enchanting
surrounded by local Takamaka trees. The clear turquoise water is bound to overcome you with a sense of serenity. Anse Lazio is the perfect place to sun bathe and take a stroll. The next day was just as captivating and maybe even more so. At first we had our continental breakfast on the seashore as we were surrounded by a canvas multiple shades of greenery, Anse Lazio is one of the top 10 beaches of the world.
and harmonious experience and does not fail to deliver. The lavish spa features 13 treatment pavilions, each showcasing the spectacular view of the ocean, it also has two spa suites with steam showers and soaking tubs, along with observation decks where guests can practice yoga or pilates. A gym with the latest equipment is also available along with a two infinity pools that would be great for a late night dip under a curtain of stars. The hotel also showcases several restaurants, including Losean restaurant for contemporary Mediterranean cuisine. The Curieuse restaurant specializes in Pan Asian cuisine with Indian, Chinese and Tai food. There is also the Pool Restaurant & Bar, which is Praslin’s best destination for Creole
cuisine, such as the gumbo or jambalaya. All that is topped by the private dining at a location of any choice. We picked the pool to have our lunch of Arabian food especially made for us, ranging from rice, vegetables to chicken and meat. After lunch, we went to the sublime Anse Lazio (Anse meaning bay), which is one of the top 10 beaches of the world, and is considered the king of Praslin beaches as it is ranked third of all the island beaches. It’s curved like a crescent with unique granite rocks framing both ends and is DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 87
and the long bright blue extension of the ocean ahead of us. At the hotel’s beachfront Anse Takamaka we kayaked, snorkeled and beach golfed. That area is also a designated Marine National Park. The sea life is an astonishing collection of parrotfish, angelfish, puffer fish and moray eels and other sea creatures.
Coco de mer fruit, is the largest nut in the world.
We spent the next day in nature’s embrace as we took a guided excursion to Vallée de Mai, the nature park reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our tour guide was a friendly local who has been a guide for 25 years. She told us she could not imagine doing anything else other than helping people discover the wonders of her country. After seeing this forest we completely understood
her point of view. The forest comes right out of a movie set, with leaves as tall as a people, trees that appear to reach the sky, and sounds of birds chirping. It is also home to the coco de mer fruit, which is the bearer of the largest nut in the world and is expensive. It holds the record for the largest fruit recorded at 42kg. Its mature seeds can weigh up to 17.6kg and are the world’s heaviest. Vallée de Mai includes five palm tree species that all grow together in the same place, a rare occurrence in itself; it also houses mango and cinnamon trees along with a rare type of orchid. Vallée de Mai shelters small- to medium-sized animals like the endangered black parrot, which is restricted to Praslin Island, the Seychelles tree frog, and the rare Seychelles sheathtailed bat. Curieuse Island, a little piece of heaven, is only a few minutes away from Praslin by ferry. Curieuse is the dwelling place of the Aldabra Giant tortoises, which live on the shore. We had the chance to feed them and take pictures. Whoever thinks they are silent animals is mistaken. They produced shrieks that sounded almost prehistoric. The fun on Curieuse Island continued as we played soccer with some of the locals there since one of the members of our group is a huge soccer fan and initiated a soccer match. On our last day we took the 15-minute ferry from Prasilin to La Digue Island, the third most inhabited

island in Seychelles. Colorful ox-carts can be hired as transportation throughout the island. But we recommend biking around the island because it is better to explore its allure. The Veuve Nature Reserve lies at the island’s interior. It is home to the rare black paradise flycatcher bird, of which there are only about 100 in existence. We also circled La Digue’s tallest peak of 300 meters, Belle Vue, which is in the central part of the island. One of our favorite events was biking through a vast vanilla plantation. Vanilla is one of La Digue’s economic resources and exports. The markets nearby sell intoxicating vanilla. One landmark on the island is the 19th Century French colonial-styled house once owned by the Hossen family from Mauritius. The house is now a museum open to public. The island is also known for manufacturing coconut oil and has one of the last working copra (dried coconut) mills that display the traditional method of extracting coconut oil. Visitors can purchase fresh oil.
there Coconuts are abundant on the island, but don’t get your coconut juice until you hit the beach because that’s where it is most deliciously served. Drinking it as you lie on the beach is also an added benefit since La Digue’s beaches are simply exquisite with strokes of blue and green enveloping everyone. The beaches have been venues for several wedding ceremonies. You may find a couple’s name carved into a granite rock nearby. Seychelles Islands are a true gift of nature making this traveling experience one to remember.

11 NATURAL PHENOMENA
THAT WILL MAKE YOU APPRECIATE THE BEAUTY
OF SAUDI ARABIA By Mohammed Mirza
Often what we see around Saudi Arabia is taken for granted. Sure, we may marvel at the beaches or the sand dunes, but for the most part, nature’s marvels all around the country tend to go unnoticed. Maybe that’s why there are so many natural phenomena across the country that are rarely witnessed or relatively unknown. 1. Flowering of the Iris at Tuwair
Growing in the desert of Tuwair, 160 kilometers north of Riyadh, the existence of the Iris flower in such a harsh environment flusters onlookers. In spring, these flowers bloom and the entire field is filled in colors of different shades of purple. Their delicate flowers open at mid-day, revealing their beautiful colored petals and speckled cream center.
3. Desert Flowers in the Eastern Province
Normally found in the sabkhas (salt flats) of the eastern desert, this phenomenon happens when shallow salt basins evaporate. In the process gypsum crystals form in a circular array of flat plates, giving the rock a shape similar to a rose blossom and thus the name desert rose. In the eastern desert most of these are found buried under the sand. 90 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2015
2. Wahba Crater – A Geologists’ Dream
Contrary to popular belief, the Wahba Crater was not formed due to a meteorite impact but rather an eruption from below. The eruption was caused by volcanic activity and thus this crater that measures a massive 2 kilometers in diameter was formed. What makes the place even more special is that its white base that is filled with white sodium phosphate crystals glints tantalizingly in the moonlight.
5. Wadi Rumah – A River in the Desert
Afsar Lake
4. Migratory Birds at Afsar Lake
Saudi Arabia is believed to host the migration of around 2 million birds every year. Birds in huge flocks migrate from wintering grounds in Africa to breeding grounds in Europe and Central Asia and vice versa, making it one of the biggest flyways in the world. A large portion of them can be spotted at the Afsar Lake in Al Ahsa region. Its not surprising that thousands of these birds do stop at this lake while making their long journey, considering it is one of the biggest lakes in the entire Arabian Peninsula.
One of Arabia’s longest river valleys, Wadi Rumah, stretches to about 600 kilometers in length. The valley arises near Madinah and heads northeast, and sinks beneath the sand dunes in the Qassim region. It then reappears on the other side of the desert where it is known as Wadi Al Batin and continues northeast and forms the western boundary of Kuwait, before finally emptying in the Arabian Gulf. The valley is believed to fill only three times every 100 years; the last time this phenomenon occured was in 2008.
6. Underwater World at Farasan Islands
The Red Sea has attracted divers from all around the world due to the amazing diversity that it has to offer. Despite soaring temperatures for much of the year, Farasan Islands, the coast of peninsular Arabia, display the best of what the mesmerizing Red Sea has to offer. Beneath the warm waters that surround Farasan Islands are magnificent landscapes, mountains of fish and corals that stretch for miles. No wonder it was celebrated diver Jacques Costeau’s favorite diving spot.
7. Al Lith Hot Springs – Nature’s Jacuzzi
A little gem of an oasis lies around 260 kilometers south of Jeddah close to the village of Al Lith. What makes it stand out though is that it is home to the country’s very own natural Jacuzzi. The temperature in the spring is heated to the temperature of bath water. It is believed that the warm temperature of the water is the result of benign underground volcanic activity. 8. Jabal Qara – Ali Baba’s Mysterious Den
This auburn-colored mountain contains a labyrinth of caves and caverns with little shafts on the top that let light pierce through, making the whole place look like the set of an Indiana Jones movie. Made from calcareous sandstone, marl, clay and sedimentary rocks, Jabal Qara sits at around 20 kilometers east of the city of Hofuf. The cave networks inside stretch for over 1,000 meters and close to the very end of it lies what locals call Ali Baba’s den — from the popular folktale Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves.
9. Snow In The Northwestern Desert
The extremely rare phenomenon happens in the northwest region of the country, close to the modern day city of Tabuk. The phenomenon last occurred in the winter of 2013, when the outskirts of Tabuk were blanketed in snow—a region that receives less than 5 inches of rainfall every year.
10. Singing Sand Dunes of Rub Al Khali
According to a legend, the whispers distract travelers and drag them into danger, singing through the sand dunes. From beneath footsteps and car wheels, a deep roaring comes from the sand, a sound similar to that of a low-flying airplane. The vibrations of grains of sand as they fall on top of each other are believed to be the cause of this phenomenon.

11. Wadi Al Jinn – Valley of the Jinns
Situated at around 30 kilometers northwest of Madinah, the Wadi Al Jinn is a mystifying valley where cars move uphill even when their engine is off. While some believe that the power of the “Jinns” is evident in the valley, others point out that the phenomenon is nothing but an optical illusion.

TAYMA OASIS The oasis of Tayma is situated on a flat basin on the western edge of the Nafud desert with a salt pan north of the settlement. Artifacts dating from the Middle Bronze Age to the Islamic period were discovered at the area. Carvings found there seem to link Arabian and Assyrian tribes. Hieroglyphic inscriptions in the area revealed evidence of a direct trade route connected to the Nile valley during the reign of Ramses III. The center of the city contains the architectural landmark Bir Haddaj or Haddaj Well. It dates to 6th century BC during

the Babel occupation. In the 5th century BC, Tayma was abandoned and the well had dried and was discarded. Years later, Sulaiman Al Ghunaim attempted to dig it again, but it wasn’t until 1953 that King Saud renovated it and turned it into an integral part of the area’s irrigation system. Tayma also encompasses a huge boulder named Al Naslaa. The slit in the middle of the boulder resulted in two huge rocks facing one another. The front of Al Naslaa shows engraved carvings of horses and camels thought to allude to caravans that have entered and left the area, hence highlighting Tayma’s importance to trade in the old days.
