Doodle For a Cause When Dina Arif lost her friend to breast cancer last year, she decided something had to be done to help those battling the same disease. Arif came up with an innovative idea that would enable her to raise funds for mammograms and early check-ups through art. Arif’s Doodle for a Cause campaign aimed at harnessing people’s artistic passion as they sent in their doodles to be put on display and sold in order to raise breast cancer funds. Arif was overjoyed by the reaction to her event and says, “I couldn’t believe the response I got from the public. A lot of people wanted to contribute and started uploading their art on our social media accounts. All the love and support was overwhelming.” 6

Doodle for a Cause was held on Feb. 5 at 21,39. A huge gathering of about 300 people attended to discuss the issue. The attendees included local young professionals, art and community service enthusiasts, key audience segments and prominent society figures. The doodles were sold for SR 1,000, which is equivalent to the cost of one mammogram. Visitors were allowed to buy any number of doodles; over 100 doodles were sold. The doodles were also compiled into a coffee table book and sold at the event for SR 250.
Dr. Sulaiman Fakeih and Al Zahra Breast Cancer Association were huge supporters of the campaign. Arif donated the raised funds to Al Zahra Breast Cancer Association, which had believed in the idea from the start and helped it come to life. Arif is looking forward to expanding the campaign even further next year. She aims at involving more people with the novel concept and wishes to help even more in their battle against cancer.

BUSINESS
FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD Investing 101 In fact it takes enormous amount of discipline and perseverance if one was not trained to “behave well” with money at an early age. But what’s next? A rule of thumb is that inflation (the increase of price of goods and services) eats into our savings. In simple words, as time passes, the “purchasing power” of our money declines and we are no longer able to purchase the same amount of goods or services at the same price a year ago. So, in order to combat inflation, the savings must be invested appropriately in order to preserve (or gain) value.
But how do you go about this? SOME OF THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS HERE INCLUDE: • How do I invest? • What is a good investment for me? • Should I opt for real estate or stock? • Which stocks should I select? • What do you think of gold as an investment? These are just some of the questions. Most investing starters get ahead of themselves, which is what the @Nasi7atReem initiative deals with frequently. 22 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2015
We often talk about the benefits of saving and accumulating money in a bank account or at home. This is a great starting point to building wealth.
The investing process can vary in complexity but there are rules and guidelines too. SO IF YOU ARE A STARTER IT WOULD HELP TO FOLLOW THESE STEPS:
your investment 1 Identify objective: In other words,
determine your goal. Why do you want to invest? The first obvious answer is to grow your wealth (or “capital appreciation” in finance lingo). There are other goals including obtain regular income, maintain liquidity, and preserve capital against inflation. Each one of these goals will be analyzed further to detect if it is really suits your needs and lifestyle. A professional adviser can help you through this exercise.
horizon: This 2 Investment is the total time period an
investor expects to “be in” the investment. This is very important when determining suitable tools and selection.
Required return: It’s about 3 the percentage return
that an investor wishes to achieve in any given investment plan. This can be different from a realistic expected rate of return.
Risk Tolerance: This is about 4 how much risk you can
bear in order to achieve the stated goals. An investor’s tolerance to swings in the value of an investment varies from one person to another. The answers to all these questions constitute a preliminary “Investor Profile” which can be further tuned to design an optimal investment plan. In the coming issues, I will zero in on more details related to the “Investor Profile.” The Author: Reem Asaad is an inspirational Saudi woman. She is a wife, mother, writer and financial adviser. Asaad was ranked the third most powerful Arab Woman in 2012 by Arabian Business Magazine. Email: Nasi7atreem@gmail.com @Nasi7atreem

“MY SISTER MADE ME DO IT!” LATIFA AND SHEIKHA AL SUDAIRY, A TALE OF TWO SISTERS
The Sudairy sisters are a perfect example of what empowered Saudi women can achieve with the right mix of courage, curiosity for life and siblings who push each other out of their comfort zone. By Jou Pabalate
“It was a turning point from being sisters to also being friends. Friendship plays an important part in how we now are towards each other; as I think it does for any siblings. You learn to really trust each other and get to know yourself as well in the process.” Latifa, 35 and Sheikha, 32 are the eldest of five children. Despite their generational gap, their siblings, Haifa, Najla and Mohammed are also

Latifa and Sheikha were born two years apart in the US before moving back to Saudi Arabia, where their childhood was spent in the northern city of Al Jouf. When they reached high school age, the two were sent to boarding school. These years had a tremendous impact on them both. Concerning her time away at boarding school with her sister, Latifa shares:
some entrepreneurs would opt to land themselves at the top of the pole, Latifa had the insight and gusto to work from the ground up. “I went and did it all, from stocking and inventory, merchandising and being a sales lady in the store.”
determined to create their own life paths. Being part of the Sudairy family tree entails a certain legacy and privilege —but as Sheikha was quick to point out, their parents instilled in them the importance of hard work and creating their own individual successes: “We have a lot of things to be grateful for, Al Hamdullilah, but we were raised in a way wherein we knew the value of hard work. Our mom and dad would always ask the question, ‘What do you want to be?’ It’s not a matter of ‘if you would work’ but simply, ‘when you start to work.’” As a result, Latifa and Sheikha both found professional success, albeit in different forms. One rose to the challenge of entrepreneurship and became the leader of the family-run retail firm, EYAT. The other went on to serve the larger community through her work at one of the oldest and most trusted non-profit organizations in the Kingdom, Al Nahda Charity Organization. Though the career paths of these two sisters diverged, one went into the commercial world of retail, while the other pursued charity work, it’s important to remember and inspiring to know that each played a critical role in the other’s career choice.
Latifa Al Sudairy A Luxury Fashion Trail Blazer Latifa started working at a very young age. At 19, she took a job in the treasury finance department of Saudi British Bank, while simultaneously studying at the Institute of Public Administration. When her father, Dr. Salman Abdulrahman Al Sudairy established EYAT, Latifa got on board and helped build the company from the ground up. She is now serving as the Operations Manager and Chief Buyer for the retail firm. Since its inception, Latifa has taken a hands-on approach to learning the ins and outs of the family business. While
As Latifa fondly recalls, the story of Lati Boutique all started with a dress that came her way through her sister. Sheikha, a grad-student at the time, came back from New York with this gorgeous Anna Marie Couture dress. “It was the first time I had heard of the brand. It was beautiful and, to top it off, reasonably priced. The following winter break, she brought home more dresses from other designers. The numbers on the price tags made sense. You wouldn’t think twice about buying them.” And so the idea began to develop in Latifa’s mind. The idea which eventually became the luxury boutique we know today. A shop was established where you are treated like a princess, while buying stunning dresses that are reasonably priced.
DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 27
“We were taking a walk through a garden in Spain when Latifa suddenly said, ‘You should open a flower shop!’ It was so out of nowhere but it got me thinking.” Sheikha laughs, “It’s not that I ended up becoming a florist, I really don’t want to be an entrepreneur but just the idea of doing something else, something out of the box. It gave me that motivation I needed.”
Sheikha Sudairy A Champion of Women Empowerment Sheikha, from an early age, has always wanted to serve the community and give back. It’s what inspired her to take up politics for her undergraduate education. For a time though, she took on a job in investment banking, a lucrative career but it left Sheikha wondering what more she could do. Just as her choices had inspired Latifa, Sheikha gained the courage to step out of her comfort zone from her older sister. It seems that the sisters had, without planning it, entered into a partnership of reciprocal positive reinforcement.
28 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2015
Sheikha didn’t use that motivation to open up a flower shop. Instead, she earned a masters degree in Psychology. When she finally returned to Riyadh, an unexpected encounter, made possible through an event Latifa was participating in, introduced Sheikha to the Al Nahda Charity Organization. Sheikha candidly shares that growing up; she was a shy girl who would rather stay in the background. It’s quite interesting how the Chief Project Officer is now a vision of confidence and a role model for Saudi women professionals.
The Power of Two Eventually, Latifa and Sheikha, who are both big on social responsibility, found a way to apply their professional interests to a worthy cause. Lati Boutique became the first Saudi fashion retail store that offered a unique CSR program that allows its customers to directly impact the causes they believe in. After each purchase, you are given tokens, which you can drop into jars that represent the different programs of Al Nahda – Education, Awareness and Training. When asked what program she is most keen on supporting, Latifa admits, “I love and believe in all the causes we promote, although I do have a soft spot for awareness campaigns. We really need to do more to raise awareness of certain issues. So, yes, when I’m manning the store, you’ll see a lot of tokens dropping in that jar.”

SONGS OF TRADITION In a world where DJs and modern singers have taken over, Tooha remains true to Saudi’s historic and traditional music. Destination was invited for coffee inside the famous singer’s home to discuss her history and everlasting love for music. Tooha is Saudi’s first female wedding singer. Her journey to become a famous corner stone of Saudi occasions and weddings in

particular started long ago. She has been in the music field for 52 years. Tooha’s house breathes the essence of history. It is filled with memorabilia from her past. Items from her childhood home still reside with her to this day, such as her mother’s old disk player and hand-made scrapbooks from her early years. As Tooha puts it, “I have seen history in the making and would not trade my memories for anything.”

TOOHA
FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC Tooha grew up in a house that admired music. She describes how her passion for music started at a very young age and reminisces how she first learnt to play the oud. She says, “my brother, may he rest in peace, had an oud. Once when I was 9, I tried to carry the instrument hoping to be able to play, but instead it fell and got battered. My brother was very upset of course,” she adds with a laugh. “After that incident, my dad got me a Yamani oud. Both of them taught me how to play. My dad would always call me ‘Tooha the singer’ after that,” she continues. Tooha then resumes, “I was number one on the wedding musical scene. Everyone else then followed.”
Her mom's music player,it has been part of the family for more than 80 years.
She begins by saying:
“My first singing occasion was a baby shower. Then I performed at a big wedding and people started asking for me after that. I even performed with my sister and cousin at times. Then I also recorded a few songs in Beirut a long time ago.” “I don’t like questions that ask how society dealt with me being a female performer at occasions, because if it hadn’t been accepting, I wouldn’t have had this success.”
Her old music collection.
THEN AND NOW Tooha was always a familiar face at weddings. To her, the entire marriage institution has altered drastically. She explains, “girls have a say now. Back in the past, their parents would do everything starting from picking out the groom and they wouldn’t be
able to say a thing. Now, girls pick and choose.” She observes how all aspects of weddings have changed by adding, “there is a lot of competition between wedding venues now, and each place asks for huge amounts of money. Back then, people used to have weddings on rooftops or even in the street. Things were a lot simpler.” DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 31
Tooha then recounts the difference between weddings in the past and now and says,
“Weddings have lost their core. Women go now to criticize each other. They look at each other’s gowns, hair, heels and makeup. That is what they notice and discuss, they no longer look at the woman’s soul.” Being a musical legend, Tooha relates how the music these days does not convey Saudi traditions anymore as she elaborates, “Wedding music is very noisy now. You no longer cherish what you are listening to, because you can barely hear anything from all the banging. New instruments have infiltrated the Saudi music, so where do my oud and I stand? I am not going to change the act because I want to stay true to Saudi heritage.” Her advice to today’s singers is to “learn the basics and take it one step at a time.”

Tooha as a child in her hometown of Al Ihsaa'.
TODAY Unfortunately, Tooha does not appear in many weddings nowadays due to her health conditions, as she conveys, “I now focus on small gatherings only. I have been away from the wedding musical scene, but if I am
invited and insisted upon, I go to a wedding and recite a ‘majas’, a few words for the bride.” Tooha has come to realize that the one constant thing in life is learning. “People must always strive to learn more. By learning, we raise our nation high.”
She is brave as she opens up about her fears and exclaims, “I have no one to leave this heritage to. Yes, I have family members, but no one will ever preserve it or take care of it like I will.” But she concludes the conversation by looking around her memory-
filled home and saying, “Alhamdulelah.” Tooha is a proud Saudi woman who has dedicated her life to her art. She cherishes her traditions and memories and would never want to change her life course.

• Appearances count. Dress to impress. • Gifts are a nice touch; they show appreciation. You also do not want them to think you are stingy. • Smile. Do not make them wonder if you were forced into meeting them. • Go over your impressive career path and ambitions without sounding boastful. • Compliment the house and the food served. • Be honest. Parents always know if you are telling the truth. Honesty is a virtue they demand in their son-in-law. Parents will take everything you do into account. Do not be nervous when meeting them, but keep in mind that they are handing over their most beloved being so they will not take this meeting lightly.

Here are a few tips on how to impress the in-laws:
PICKING THE BLING Getting an engagement ring is one of the bride’s favorite parts. It is however, a complete source of bafflement to you as a groom. Even if you make your mom pick everything out, you still want to have a say in the ring you are getting your bride.
Here are some points you must take into consideration:
SOURCE PHOTO/MGJD.COM.AU • ARISTIDESFINEJEWELS.COM • OVERSTOCK.COM - PHOTO/GROOM: SALMA JAMMAL
• Establish your budget. This will narrow choices down for you and pin point the jewelry stores you should go to. • Check the durability of the ring band. You do not want it to wear out quickly. You also have to check if the ring can be resized. Chances are you do not know her ring size and you do not want to get one that does not fit.
• When picking out a diamond engagement ring, keep the 4 Cs in mind.
CUT
This is responsible for the shiny element of the diamond. Round diamonds are known to offer the maximum sparkle.
CARAT
This is the weight of the rock. It goes without saying that the more the diamond weighs the more expensive it is. The average engagement ring however is usually a bit more than a carat.
CLARITY
Refers to the stone’s imperfections. Many of those are small and cannot be detected without a magnifying glass. Stay away from ones that have visually clear inclusions.
COLOR
This refers to the diamond’s lack of color. Diamonds are more valuable when they are colorless. Some diamonds exhibit arrays of grey or yellow. A completely colorless diamond is rare. Originally colored diamonds such as pink, purple or black, are also rare to find in a natural setting, but may be designed in labs.
CLARITY DEFENITIONS FL-IF: Flawless - Internally Flawless VVS1-VVS2: Very, Very Slight Inclusions VS1-VS2: Very Slight Inclusions SI1-SI2: Slight Inclusions I1-I2-I3: Imperfect - Inclusions Can Be Visible To The Naked Eye
WHAT THE STONE SAYS Engagement is the time when you know more about your soon to be wife, so keep her personality in mind when picking out the diamond ring.

PLANNING TO
WEDD-IN? By Sahrish Ali and Sohila El Saadany
In-house weddings are becoming a growing trend that people are choosing over the traditional wedding hall functions. Here's what you need to know!
PROS AND CONS
SOURCE PHOTO/EASYWEDDINGS-WORDPRESS.S3.AMAZONAWS.COM
Home weddings infuse the bright future ahead of the couple with the warmth of their memories, and no better place is engulfed in the aroma of the past than their homes. If you’re still trying to decide whether to go with a home wedding or a hall wedding, here are some pros and cons of “wedd-ins.”
36 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2015
PROS:
CONS:
The Whereabouts
Plan of All Plans
Since a wedding is a costly event, having it at home will eliminate the venue’s expenses. This money can then be allocated somewhere else, like the honeymoon.
Complete Control
The couple is in charge. They set the suitable date without worrying about other weddings on the same day. They also decide how long the wedding should be, not all couples want their weddings to continue until the break of dawn. They pick the decorations and flowers along with their desired themes.
Wedding Cuisine
Food will not be an issue, since it will be according to taste. The bride and groom will make their own meal choices with the caterers they prefer best. They will not have to settle for anything less than delicious.
Emotional Waterworks
What is more sentimental than getting wed in the house that has witnessed so many stages of the bride or groom’s life? They are embarking on a their first step towards their future together. With family members gathered to celebrate the happy occasion, the nostalgic memories of the bride and groom as children are bound to get the tears of joy running.
Even though the cost of the venue is spared, the cost of a wedding planner most probably is not. Someone must be hired to properly prepare the house and turn it into a wedding wonderland. The couple, especially the bride, might have the themes and decorations planned out but someone would still be needed to implement them.
To Invite or Not to Invite
Due to the space, the number of guests will be limited. The event maybe restricted to just close friends and family. The wedding list must be agreed upon ahead of time to avoid clashes on who should be invited.
Damage Control
There is always a risk of damage with any event and a wedding is no different. A wedding at home will definitely make the owners fear for their valuables.
Bathroom Break
Funny as it sounds, bathrooms could be a problem. The bathrooms at home will not be able to accommodate all of the guests. Portable bathrooms may be brought in as a solution, but then where will they be placed?

SARAH AL DABBAGH:
"The most challenging part of planning a wedding at home is the need to move and store furniture around, making sure to utilize the space in the best way possible. Homes aren't built as wedding venues which makes it challenging to figure out the best area of the house to use." - Sarah Al Dabbagh, Founder of Lace Events
What’s your favorite part about weddings at home? I’m the biggest fan of weddings at home, they’re romantic and oh-so-very special. Getting married in the house you grew up in gives the wedding a whole other meaning and experience. Also, when deciding to have a wedding at home, you limit the guest list to close friends and family because of space, turning it into an intimate affair.
LOULWA AHMED: WEDD-IN EXPERIENCE
Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted a wedding different from all the norm. I never wanted to be a guest at my own wedding where I couldn’t even mingle with the guests or spend time with my loved ones. A wedding is meant to be enjoyed with those closest to you.
Planning an in-house wedding had its challenges; the weather, number of guests, etc. I thought the house wouldn’t accommodate the 150 guests I invited, but my wedding planner made it happen and took care of organizing the house, seating arrangements, the ‘kosha’ where I would sit with the love of my life, and everything in between. He transformed my whole house
in two days. My house had two outdoor washrooms so the guests had no problems. Thankfully, the weather was perfect and people enjoyed themselves at my wedding. I enjoyed staying with my guests from beginning till the end. Personally, I would advise anyone who is getting married to have a wedding where you could invite only the people you want and keep it intimate. I was overwhelmed with emotion when I could dance with my father at my own wedding. There are no words to describe it. It was truly magical.

Tell us about your musical dream and what led you to choose Arabs Got Talent.
Someone once told me, “In the eyes of the public, your success will seem like it happened over night. However, only you know how many years you put into your dreams and how hard you’ve worked.” I have been chasing these musical waves for a very long time. I have been part of a rock band, played shows in the LA music scene and signed an indie label. I have been nurturing this dream, taking care of it and now I’m letting it fly. This constant journey has shaped who I am today.
Being featured on Arabs Got Talent has been on my list for quite some time, and I am beyond thrilled to be representing Saudi Arabia.
PHOTO/LINA MALAIKA AND MARCEL SEVERINO
Aishah Al Banawi recently hit the screens through Arabs Got Talent and completely left us wowed! We were given the pleasure to learn more about her.
What experiences led you to dive into music?
I was four when my mother took me to an audition for the role of Trouble in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. It was my first onstage experience alongside some of the world’s most incredible opera singers. A Russian opera singer, Galina Gorchakova, played my mother on stage. I still get the chills when I think about her voice; how she sang her vibrato with such poignant vocal ability that it left the entire audience in awe. This moment was my first epiphany. I began observing and developing an ear for different musical genre, and it felt like I could see music in real life. I remember watching Fantasia by Disney, and how every visual movement paralleled a certain sound. Without music, life is rigid and dull. It’s not so much as how I got into it, but more how it found me.
Tell us more about your personal life.
I enjoy prayer, meditation, connecting to nature and clean eating. People initially see me as playfully energetic and outspoken, however, I am an introvert at heart. Malibu is one of my favorite places to nurture spiritual practices.
What message do you plan to get across as a musician?
I just want people to feel alive and happy. And I want them to love themselves, because I have a lot of love for them.
What kind of music are you working on currently?
I am working on some new musical material and writing a lot about my days in Saudi, which taught me a lot about myself. I can’t seem to put down my pen when I remember all of the incredible times I had in my beloved city; the roads, driving in those bright city streets, having tea and prayer with family, discussing deep profound ideas about life with awesome people. I am a student at Columbia University in New York City. It is a nice balance from stage to classroom.
Where do you plan to take your music?
Presently, I am thrilled to be participating on Arabs Got Talent. I visualize myself studying at school while recording and performing. When I study well, I perform better, and when I sing my heart out I study better. And if a record deal presents itself along the way, I am up for the challenge.
What are your thoughts on the music scene in Saudi?
When I lived in Saudi, there was a lot of underground music going on which has now started to emerge more into the open. I am so excited that this music scene is evolving and expanding. It’s an opportunity for us musicians to get together and connect in a beautiful way. Aishahmusic

SAUDI ARABIA’S ART POWER COUPLE
How did you two meet? Y: Back in late 2009 I
started a number of small collaborative side projects on Facebook. Soraya was one of the first people to join one of the projects. That was the beginning of our friendship and the very first milestone in building a beautiful relationship! Our first proper outing together was to the magical Albalad district in Jeddah, which to this day has a special place in my heart.
S: Back when Facebook was
hip, this was the platform for connecting with people. I was also a member in DeviantArt. com and, if I remember correctly, he liked my work and sent me a friend request on Facebook. I participated in a couple of online collaborative activities he created and I recommended his page to a friend. Next thing you know, we both went to an exhibition by the British Council at Beit Bant at Albalad in Jeddah.
What do you think of each other’s art?
Y: What I love most about Soraya’s artwork is how honest it is. She has such a way with expression that is very piercing and raw. I hope to one day be able to express myself in such a personal and honest way!
S: I’ve always admired
Yousef’s love for experimentation. I never met any artist like that before and it really inspired me. I try my best to encourage him to make time to create because he is most alive when he does. I honestly believe his art is awesome and I do try very hard not to let my jealousy get to me!
How would you define the artistic aspect of your relationship?
Y: We are both artists at heart and everything we stand for relates to empowering selfexpression in each other and others around us. Our life at the moment revolves around Onqoud, a creative incubator. Onqoud is all about bringing creatives together, so you can imagine most of our days are spent working on art that shapes both our professional and personal relationships. S: Since his first visit to
Jeddah, Yousef would always bring an artistic gift with him. He draws silly things to make me laugh and I always loved that! It’s always interesting to see the look on people’s faces when they’re going through my very dark sketchbook and suddenly come across a funny drawing of a cat saying “I love you.” I love telling people that
this is what Yousef does to cheer me up and it’s one of the main things that made me fall in love with him.
How do you click outside of art?
Y: Great question! Because most of our days are spent submerged in creative work, whenever we get free time we tend to spend it enjoying each other’s company doing simple things like sitting on the Corniche, spoiling our cats or watching a funny movie. S: We love playing games like the guessing game where one thinks of something and the other has to guess it by just asking questions. Another one we’ve been playing recently is Truth or Truth rather than Truth or Dare.
How did Onqoud come to life?
Y: For me, it started at university when I cofounded Shayirha, a student club for sharing design ideas. I knew I wanted to take that passion and make it a central part of my life. Luckily, in 2012, Soraya, Mariam and some other friends joined a startup incubation program at KAUST VentureLab, where they planted the seed behind Onqoud, and shortly after that I joined as one of the co-founders.
DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 57
S: In a nutshell, it was
developed at KAUST’s VentureLab in 2012. For 3 months I continuously asked Yousef for business advice since he was more knowledgeable. It only made sense that he should join Mariam Hamidaddin and myself to make the great team that we are today! When I first pitched the idea, VentureLab team was not sold. However with each week, their belief in Onqoud grew. Onqoud continues to be one of the alumni referred to as a proof of VentureLab’s success.
What’s your biggest inspiration?
Y: Seeing passionate people.
It doesn’t matter what it is that you are passionate about. If I see you being passionate about something I will feel inspired.
S: I hate to admit this but I’m
an Instagram addict. I think the reason for my addiction is the fact that I’m following so many inspiring people. Instagram continues to be one of the main keys to endless knowledge about healthy food, yoga and fitness.
What kind of mediums do you work in?
Y: I am very passionate about experimentation. I love all mediums equally, but if I had to specify a medium I enjoy the most, I would say it’s “new media,” which is the intersection of art and technology.
58 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2015
S: I would say my favorite
medium depends on my mood, really. For instance, when I edit a photo on my phone, it’s usually a quick release for me and I get to share that form of expression on my Instagram.
Do you remember your first artwork?
Y: I’ve started dabbling with art and making stuff in general a long time ago so it would be difficult to say what exactly was my “first” artwork. My first exhibited work was a piece called “Processed by Hierarchy” which I exhibited in Istanbul back in 2010 as part of Edge of Arabia’s Transistion exhibition.
S: I can’t say I do, but it
depends on what you consider an artwork. I do remember our 1st grade teacher asking us to draw the four seasons. She never made sure we wrote our names, so when she put them together in booklets for us to take she mixed up students’ drawings. Obviously I’m still upset about it because I still remember that the four drawings my mom saved are not all mine. I don’t even remember the teacher’s name, but I do remember this isolated incident. Thankfully I did get the snowman I drew and he’s survived for 20 years! Onqoud

TUCKED AWAY Exquisite Chicken Karahi at Makkah Restaurant By Mohammed Mirza
Nestled in Sharfiyah district this Pakistani restaurant is often crammed full with diners. They have an elaborate menu that features numerous Pakistani dishes. However, one dish stands out – the Chicken Karahi. In Makkah restaurant, the orders for Chicken Karahi are based on kilograms.
Like other South Asian restaurants, the Karahi (South Asian wok) in which the dish is prepared is placed in front of diners. The dish is full of flavor, as soft and tender pieces of chicken intermingle with spices covered in scrumptious thick gravy.
Equally complementing the curry is their sumptuous naan, an oven-baked leavened flatbread. Hot naans fresh from the oven keep pouring in, soft and steaming, the very sight of which is tantalizing.
At the end of their meals many diners take their naans and scrub the Karahi with it, trying to not miss out on even the last bits of the thick gravy that remains attached to the Karahi. Although the restaurant may not be suitable for dine-in, it sure makes for a good takeaway outlet.

IT’S ALL ABOUT
Eash Bellaham The origins of Eash Bellaham (meat pie with tahini), or as I like to call it, Hijazi Style Pizza. By Ahmad Mesawa
History The traditional Hijazi dish, eash bellaham, consists of dough, meat, leek and tahini. Baked bread is topped with a mixture of minced lamb or beef, leek and a paste made of tahini. The dough is spiced with special local herbs.
Tracing the origins of esh bellaham, we go back to the Neolithic Era also known as the age of innovation and farming. It was the norm then to wrap food in some kind of covering and cook it over charcoal or firewood. Food was usually covered in leaves or dough. It is interesting to note that the dough used to wrap food was not eaten but thrown away. 66 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2015
Dough coverings allowed the meat to preserve moisture and flavor without burning or drying out too much. The original meat pie goes back to the Neolithic Period around 9500 BC. The ancient Egyptians’ diet featured basic pies made with oats, wheat, rye and barley. They were then filled with honey and baked over hot coals. The Greeks adopted these pies and added the meat filling. The earliest mention of tahini is around 1500 BC in the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers vicinity. It is similar to the famous Turkish specialty ‘lahamacun’ which is comprised of thin dough covered with minced meat and topped with some vegetables and spices.
However, the ingredients differ from our Hijazi ‘laham be ajeen’ aka ‘eash bellaham’ literally translating to ‘bread with meat.’ Eash bellaham can be confused with other similar dishes such as mana’eesh (cheese-topped bread) or fatera. However, it is quite different due to its specifically traditional ingredients. This multi-cultural dish got me thinking about how we could further innovate this recipe; adding other kinds of meat, vegetables and cheeses. Acting on this thought, I created my own eash bellaham pops and burgers. Who knows, it might be the next Hijazi Tradition.
Happy Eating!
STAFF PHOTO/YASMIN OUF
This dish is a contribution of the many Muslims who immigrated to the Hijaz region and brought with them their culture and food. Over time, the food and culture overlap resulted in many interesting dishes and customs. What we now know as Hijazi food is a mixture of foreign foods integrated with traditional recipes.

Eash Bellaham Restaurant Story
After extensive research and planning, the opening of their restaurant, Eash be Laham, took place last June 14. I was honored to receive an invitation to their opening as a Food and Restaurant critic. I was pleased with the Hijazi theme they adopted. The folklore artist, Bassam Al Laban, presented a Hijazi majas, which is customized poems delivered in special tones.
Al Faumi and Bukhari were surprised and pleased by the high demand for eash bellaham from just the first few days of opening. At first they couldn’t keep up with the orders so they had to close early, but they calculated the demand and hired additional help in order to overcome this obstacle. Al Faumi and Bukhari use their family recipe, slightly adjusted to suit commercial production. “My sister’s homemade eash bellaham is still the best though,” added Bukhari jokingly. Eash be Laham restaurant is a fast take away shop serving only to go orders. Their menu is impressive, offering several developed types of eash bellaham. I strongly recommend their traditional style eash bellaham before trying other options such as
eash with chicken, vegetables, eash bellaham sandwich or Musakhan sandwich. The best way to end your meal is with a twisted Hijazi version of eash bellaham called eash with Nutella or eash with tahinia – the name says it all! I also recommend their eash al saraya, which is not a traditional Hijazi dish despite the name similarity. The restaurant is located in Al Salamah District on Abdulrahman Al Sudairy Street, near and at the opposite side of Al Shuaibi Mosque. If you know what you want, call ahead of time and place your order. Check out their Instagram account to see their menu. I’m proud of this project and I hope to see additional branches this year as they planned. PORTO CERVO Italy’s delectable taste right here in Jeddah

Porto Cervo is named by its owners after the luxurious seaside location in Sardinia. Before returning to Jeddah, the restaurant’s owners lived happily in Italy for many years. Their devotion to food and Italian culture compelled them to bring all that Italian cuisine had to offer to Jeddah, and so, Porto Cervo was born. The restaurant is laid out beautifully. Its walls are emblazoned with charming, Italian paintings. A lovely, Romanesque fountain brightens the restaurant’s atmosphere. Much of its furniture was carefully imported from several of the best Italian furniture makers, all to give the customer that authentic Italian feeling.

Speaking of authentic, let’s talk taste. The items on the menu come from a wide range of regions within Italy. The authentic Italian chefs know exactly what to use and how to use it in order to ensure that genuine Italian taste is what their customers get. Chef Capotosto explains, “If you know the difference between the tastes, then you know where you can go to bring the right Italian product.” Fresh vegetables and seafood are bought locally, so some of the dishes are given a dash of local flavor. Capotosto adds, “the menu carries the simplicity of Italian taste with a bit of our own touch.” Every week there is a new special dish to ensure that visitors will have something new to try. Porto Cervo serves all the traditional pastas from penne to fettuccine and all the others you’ve never tried. Each pasta dish is prepared with its own sauce. So you are getting married and you want to look amazing on your big day, but you have no idea where to start, what to eat and where to find the time. I have one word for you …KISS! By Rob Seagreen Fitness Director at Arena MMA and Fitness Center
Firstly, sort out your food. Balance your intake and supplement it with a decent workout. Avoid processed foods, refined carbohydrates and SUGAR! A block is a unit of measure used to simplify the process of making balanced meals. 7 grams of protein = 1 block of protein 9 grams of carbs = 1 block of carbs 1.5 grams of fat = 1 block of fat
This assumes that there is about 1.5 grams of fat in each block of protein, so the total amount of fat needed per block meal is 3 grams of fat.
When a meal is composed of equal blocks of protein, carbs and fat it is 40 percent of its calories are from carbs, 30 percent from protein and fat.

MEYSRA Facilitating Transportation
Nashat Al Allaf providing the elderly and disabled with a sense of independency.
By Anousha Vakani
Transportation has always been a hot topic in this region and anyone who has an idea to make it easier to get around is instantly a hero. Meysra is a word from the Qur’an that literally translates to “facilitator,” so it was fitting that Nashat Al Allaf, founder of a company that provides
transportation to the elderly and the handicapped, would use this word to describe the services they provide. Al Allaf had been working in the US for two years when he came up with this idea. As he was sitting in a hospital in Massachusetts one day, he was waiting in the reception area when he saw a car pull up in front of the hospital, fully equipped to enable an elderly woman to get into the car by herself and without any difficulty. He began wondering why he had never seen such a service in Saudi. From then on, Al Allaf started translating his thoughts into reality, bought some cars and applied for licences.

This article is about one of the most dynamic and knowledgeable speakers to emerge in recent years: Nouman Ali Khan. His many online lectures on subjects as diverse as Qur’anic tafsir (decipher), ethics, and adjusting to the intricacies of modern life as a Muslim, have millions of views and thousands of subscribers. This popularity does not only result from his energetic personality and often-hilarious delivery, but also from his singularly thoughtful treatment of the subjects at hand. Khan, who
does not describe himself as an Islamic scholar but as an Arabic teacher, has a background that allows him to sympathize and connect with today’s youth in a unique way. He spent his early years in Saudi Arabia, where he first studied Arabic, and returned to his homeland of Pakistan before immigrating to the United States as a junior high school student. The resulting culture shock cracked a huge fissure in his sense of religion, even leading to considering himself an atheist, before he renewed his faith and
began an even deeper and more intensive study of the Arabic language of the Qur’an under several knowledgeable teachers. Today, this background, combined with an instinctive sense for how best to engage audiences, has led him to becoming one of the most well-known speakers on modern issues that trouble the Muslim community, both in the US and worldwide. He engages his audiences, both online and offline, by cracking jokes one moment and turning solemn the next as appropriate, while discussing subjects most self-professed scholars shy away from. His videos on Qur’anic tafsir are exceptional in focusing purely on Arabic linguistic analysis: a sophisticated
symbiosis of grammar and morphology, the roots of Arabic words, and tying it all together. This brings about a newfound perspective that even native Arabic speakers will often be unaware of. Each of his tafsir videos brings about a renewed appreciation for the intricate subtleties of meaning in the Qur’an. Now the head of the Bayyinah Institute, he leads the yearly Bayyinah Dream Program, a nine-month in-depth study of Arabic through the lens of the Qur’an conducted in Dallas, Texas. For those who can’t make it to Dallas, and for whom YouTube videos are not enough, the Bayyinah Qur’an Intensive offers subscriptionbased rigorous tafsir and Arabic courses online that anyone can benefit from.

Khan, one of the most well-known speakers on modern issues that trouble the Muslim community
When coming across the verse, “Do they not reflect upon the Qur’an, or are there locks upon their hearts?” (47:24), we often have the uncomfortable feeling of not quite knowing how to answer for ourselves. With Nouman Ali Khan, the answer is that much more within grasp. True reflection on the Qur’an only comes with the genuine pursuit of knowledge; Khan’s endeavors, with Allah’s grace, can enable us all to do just that.

HOW MARRIAGE Can Enhance Your Productivity By Raghad Abied
One of the most important relationships we have in our lives is the one with our spouse. Unfortunately, it seems like we are facing a crisis as the rate of divorce has increased in our Muslim community. It is particularly alarming that divorce increases in the first year or two of marriage, indicating that the couple may have lacked in-depth knowledge of what marriage entails.
88 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2015
The consequences of marital dissatisfaction are indeed far-reaching and have been correlated to high rates of depression, weak physical health and poor work production. Many people spend a lot of time and money preparing for a wedding that lasts a few hours. But how many people actually prepare for the marriage itself?
Since marriage plays an important role in enhancing one’s productivity, here are a few steps in the formula towards a productive married life: Marriage has been described beautifully in the Qur’an as: “And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts). Verily in that are Signs for those who reflect.” (Chapter 30, Verse 21)
How can we find this love and mercy? How can we live in tranquility?
Marriage is a two-way street.
It is not that each person puts in
50-50
but rather both husband and wife need to put in
100 PERCENT
1. Educate Yourself • Learn about the etiquette of seeking a spouse, what is permissible to do and what is impermissible. • Research the questions you should ask him/her. • Learn about your responsibilities and rights over each other. • Pay an Islamic bookshop a visit for reading material on this chapter in life.
2. Decide on Desired Characteristics • Make a list of characteristics you want your spouse to have. Keep in mind that you are not perfect and cannot expect your spouse to be as such. • Recognize traits or values that he/she must have and the areas you are willing to compromise, as no one is completely flawless. • Review this list and make sure it is realistic. Reflect on your own self, what qualities do you have to offer?
3. Consider a Potential Spouse • Consult family and friends for help. • Ensure you or your family speak to this prospective partner’s close friends and family to gain a complete and truthful insight of the person. • Reflect upon his/her character traits, values, expectations, goals/dreams and your compatibility.
4. Pray Istikhara
(The Guidance Prayer) • Pray Istikhara for counsel and guidance. • Seek your parents’ approval and blessing. You have to make sure they agree with your decision. Finally, having come this long way, place your trust in Allah when you have made your decision, and it will be the start of a productive chapter in your lives.

CROATIA Romans, Ottomans, Venetians, Habsburgs and Hungarians; it seems everyone and anyone has invaded Croatia through the ages. However, this year sees the former Yugoslavian state celebrate two decades of peace and in July mark two whole years in the European Union. All this stability means only one thing of course: more invaders! Fortunately these are the nice ones armed only with cameras, sunblock and a good pair of walking boots. For too long Croatia has been the secret hangout of the hip, savvy travelers who have wanted to keep this Adriatic jewel all to themselves. But not anymore. Travel trends are about to lift the lid on this pretty little European secret. If you want to 92 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2015
join the latest invasion and get the best out of Croatia follow our superb itinerary that starts in the north with the country’s capital before meandering down to the gleaming coastline in the south. This can be done in a week by car or more gradually using local transport.
Zagreb; culture, arts and architecture (2-3 days)
Start off in the capital Zagreb, a city made for strolling amongst the Austro-Hungarian and Communist style architecture taking coffee breaks in quirky cafes.
Armed with a Zagreb card (free transport and discounts across the city) you can visit one of the many elegant galleries, pop into the Mimara museum to stare at a Rembrandt or appreciate the nation’s greatest sculptor at the Mestrovic Atelier, before spending the evening hanging out in buzzing Tkalciceva. Set aside one day for Zagreb’s great antique markets. British Square is the place to grab authentic Balkan or Communist memento but if it’s a real old fashioned flea market you crave, board the 295 bus to Hrelic/Jakusevac.

SAUDI ARABIA’S NATURAL WONDER JABAL QARA By Mohammed Mirza
The eastern province of the country is replete with nature’s marvels and tales of bygone times. To experience them for ourselves we decided to visit the most conspicuous of them all – Ali Baba’s mysterious caves at Jabal Qara. Whenever I see photos of Petra, I always find myself awestruck by the auburn mountains rather than the rock cut dwellings. I recently came across similarly colored mountains in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, and wait, it doesn’t end here. It even has a labyrinth of caves and caverns running through it! Jabal Qara (Cave Mountain) is made up of calcareous sandstone, marl, clay and sedimentary rocks. The intricate cave network consists of long passages, spacious 96 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2015
chambers and exquisite rock formations. To visit Jabal Qara, I traveled over 1,400 kilometers from Jeddah to the palm oasis of Al Ahsa. The region is a major agricultural hub which boasts of over 3 million date palms that produce a half million tons of some of the best dates in the world each year. The mountain, which is home to the cave network, sits at around 20 kilometers from Al Ahsa’s capital, Hofuf. The provincial capital is well connected by national highways to major cities such as Dammam and
Riyadh and it also has its own domestic airport. Once in Hofuf we made our way through dense date farms on the outskirts of the city, with the road getting narrower and the trees getting denser as we progressed. Just before we reached Jabal Qara, auburncolored rocky hills started to appear in the landscape amidst palm trees. It was a bit difficult to find. Our navigation apps were malfunctioning and we got lost in the dirt tracks that ran by the farms. Yet in the end we ultimately managed to reach it. We saw the marvelous Jabal Qara rising amidst dense palm trees. The surrounding areas of the mountain are going through major beautification works, making the place more tourist friendly; with lights being installed on pathways, railings being put up on the pavements and a restaurant being built near the entrance of the caves.
Upon entering the dark and narrow entrance of the mountain, we found that it had surprisingly cool air blowing through it on a hot day. The caves are said to be cold in summer and warm during winter, making it a favorite hangout spot for locals. We then walked through tall, linear cave passages and narrow ravines, which led us to a d ark cavern that had bits of light piercing through shafts. It almost seemed like a set of an Indiana Jones movie, truly picturesque!
Locals say that this is the den of Ali Baba - from the popular folktale “Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves.”
The caves are of an uneven height, so stairs have been installed at some places. We climbed a long flight of stairs onto an elevated sunlit portion of the caves. As we continued exploring the place, the caves got progressively narrower and darker. We then came across a crack in the cave so narrow that we barely made through it and reached a den.
There were tourists walking up the slippery slopes of the mountain to the mountaintop, from where there’s a better view of the oasis. But we had to visit other places in Hofuf before sunset thus didn’t have time to make the strenuous journey to the top. With little time left on our side we briefly explored the intriguing rock formations outside the caves.
As we continued to explore the labyrinth, we constantly found ourselves reaching dead ends. It was then we realized that we have reconnoitered the entire place and hence, decided to head back. After finding our way back from the dark maze-like caves we got an amazing view of the innumerable palm trees that inundated the mountain.
It was a bit difficult to find, our navigation apps were malfunctioning so we got lost in the dirt tracks that ran by the farms. Yet in the end we ultimately managed to reach it. We saw the marvelous Jabal Qara rising from the midst of dense palm trees.
DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 97
We saw all sorts of rock formations outside the caves. Some looked like mushrooms while others were like sore proverbial thumbs. Surreal and majestic, Jabal Qara is truly one of nature’s miracles. Seeing the constant flow of tourists coming from far and wide across the country and the developmental works being done in the vicinity of the caves, it seems like Jabal Qara is all set to be the biggest tourist attraction in the eastern part of the Kingdom. HOW TO GET THERE Once in Hofuf get on to the main arterial road of the city, King Fahd road, and head east. Once the palm groves start appearing on both sides of the road look out for a roundabout. From this roundabout take the second exit. Proceed for exactly 1.2 kilometers and take a right followed by the first left. Continue following this road until you come across a roundabout. At the roundabout take the third exit. Proceed on this road until you come across a deadend. Take a right from there, followed by the first left and you will be on Al Mansoura Road. Keep heading straight for approximately 4 kilometers and you will find the entrance to the caves on your left. Park your car there and walk along the tourist path that leads to mouth of the caves.

A TRIP TO HISTORIC SAUDI:
WADI AL MITNA LOST IN TIME Most people move towards cold and natural areas of Taif like, Al Shifa and Al Hada, but little is known about Wadi Al Mitna.
there is a small mosque with low ceilings. It is completely singular when compared to modern mosques, as it has no air conditioning or proper flooring. History narrates that during his tenth year of being a Prophet, Muhammad (PBUH), journeyed to Taif to gain support of the tribes of Hawazeen and Thafiq. However, the three chieftains of these tribes treated him harshly, setting off vandals on him who pelted him with stones till he bled. After leaving the city, he took refuge in an orchid where the owners allowed him to rest. It was here that the angel Jibreel (ASWS)
Wadi Al Mitna is a less explored historical area of Taif, and those who are aware of its name know not of its story. Located in the south of Taif, it can be accessed through Taif’s main Wadi Waj Street. There are two old mosques along Wadi Al Mitna, under the supervision of Saudi Tourism and Antiques. Many people are seen around there, hiking the mountain and wondering about the place and its historical significance. Despite being treated callously, the Prophet (PBUH) refused, saying that if they do not accept Islam someone in their descendants would. The hut where the Prophet (PBUH) rested has been turned into a small mosque now and people who have heard about Wadi Al Mitna are often seen visiting it.
