Okay folks, we get it, with the increase in gas prices may come the inflation of goods, items and utilities. But, instead of looking at the increase in gas price which is still by the way much less than any country in the world; perhaps we should take this as a lesson in conservation. So instead of whining your way into a bad day, why not do your part?

Historic Jeddah Festival

Kuna Kida 3

One of the best events organized by the Supreme Court of Tourism and Antiquities, the Historic Jeddah Festival was an insight into old Hijaz. Al Balad was transformed into a representation of the simplistic lifestyle of around 100-400 years go, with old neighborhoods, bazaars, architecture, greeting methods, the mayor’s office, folklore performances and so much more. Al Balad Comedy show was also present, ensuring the audience had a great time. There were even sections outlining major families that started off in this area, giving current generations a chance to locate their ancestors. Some old houses like the Al Matbouli House and the Nasseef House have been preserved with authentic demonstrations of Hijazi traditions. Food was also a major part of the event. Restaurants made a special effort to serve Hijazi food and drinks. The highlight of the whole event would be the efforts, specifically for those with special needs, put in by role players and volunteers who made you feel like you had gone back in time, by dressing up in historical attire and providing an interactive experience.

Let’s Walk the Walk Together 4 – Gadaha Wa Gudood The Help Center highlighted the athletic talents of children and adults with disabilities for its fourth time, through their annual Let’s Walk the Walk Together 4 – Gadaha Wa Gudood marathon. The marathon aimed to create awareness and activism among the community towards the talents of people with disabilities. The marathon took place Jan. 28, with approximately 700 participants from 20 specialized centers in Jeddah and Makkah.

BUSINESS

• REVIEW THE LIST BEFORE GOING This is to avoid over-buying items in the pantry and to assess real needs versus “wants.”

• TOP WAY DOWN

This is a macro approach to purchasing anything in life, and grocery is a good start. In simple words, have a budget first! “How much do you plan to spend?” Regardless of the amount, bear that number in mind before shopping and stick to it. If you manage to go below, well done!

FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD

Grocery Budgeting

• LEDGER

Whether you prefer apps (Mint, Wallet, Masareef, etc.) or simple pen and paper, do note it down.

• CUMULATIVE BUDGETING

That is, multiply your weekly grocery spending by four (weeks in a month). This makes it easier to budget up your monthly spending.

• SAVE FOR THE OCCASION

If you manage to save from your weekly grocery budget, you may use the balance to treat your family with a dinner out or invite friends over. Reward is an effective way to instill spending discipline.

• TAKE YOUR CHILD ON THAT TRIP Ask him or her to help you with itemizing the grocery cart and reviewing the receipt. This is a classic exercise for better child awareness about money.

Do you suffer from overspending syndrome? The remedy may begin with a simple exercise.

Grocery shopping is an extremely effective practice to instill better budgeting habits and self-restraint.

20 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2016

Here are some personal tips: • THE LIST Write your list two or three days before the grocery trip.

• PLAN YOUR WEEKLY MENU

This does not have to be on mealby-meal basis but think about the food offerings you wish to serve this week. Vegetables and fruit are mostly purchased fresh on a weekly basis. Over-refrigeration of these perishables can dissipate their nutritional value.

An Insight into PR FOR BUSINESSES VP of Phenomenal PR and Events, Heba Zahid, explains the importance of public relations. By Aabiya Baqai

According to Zahid, PR is critical to attain success in our time because markets are more competitive and information is readily available, forcing businesses to work harder to differentiate themselves from their competitors.

22 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2016

Public Relations (PR) has become an essential method of business promotion and growth. Vice president of Phenomenal PR and Events, Heba Zahid even said, “The secret formula of success is working with a PR agency, when accepting her award at the 12th annual Women in Business Stevie Award in New York.

TIPS TO REMEMBER Invite It’s the hook and the point of attraction that grabs the target audience’s attention by using the right channels. Excite After we get our target attention, we maintain their interest by presenting the right material at the right time as well as keeping the excitement known as “Content Creation.”

PR objectives should include but are not limited to: • To position the company as the leading company in the country. • To build/enhance the company’s position as the partner of choice within the region. • Establish the company as a socially responsible organization. • Strengthen relations with the target audience. • Improve public trust. • Increase employee loyalty.

A successful PR strategy does the following: • Develops key messages and focuses on delivering them to the audience. • Streamlines and creates synergy between communication tools. • Builds a long-term relationship with stakeholders. • Is pro-active and consolidates events, sponsorships and activities to create positive media coverage.

Amplify Add more value and get more exposure out of the event by increasing awareness in media.

Zahid agrees that even social media plays a key role in today’s PR strategies as it has the ability to engage and receive feedback in real time. “Organizations can take advantage of this and use the interaction with their customers to better build their brand image and loyalty,” said Zahid. She believes that setbacks with social media can be avoided if the strategy is well developed and executed, but organizations need to keep in mind that social media does magnify mistakes. This should not, however, demotivate people from using PR. “There are several misconceptions due to lack of knowledge about PR. The most common misconception that I would single out is that PR is only about the media, when it clearly isn’t. It’s about relationships.” Web: prphenonmenal.co phenomenalevents

Do you think Manga art will spread through Saudi Arabia?

Art is an important theme in Saudi Arabia, and Manga Art is no exception. Some stores already sell Manga books. Besides many Saudi artists are now drawing in manga style. I also worked on a one of a kind research for my MA. The title of my master research is: Manga Art to Formulate Saudi Arabian Cultural Proverbs Information in Contemporary Drawing and Painting.

How different is Manga art technique from other painting techniques?

Manga has its own art and character style, which is recognized by the distinctive eyes and flowing lines. This type of art is also popular for using just black and white artwork most of the time. Samah Kamil artistsoosa

Even Ordinary Objects Have a Story to Tell. Installation Art is the 3D Genre that Gives Them Voice

I painted on paper and cloth at the beginning wherein I focused on the artistic sense and a unified concept and even though I integrated other materials into my work, I still felt unfulfilled. So I went back to dabbling with different media after I was done with my MA, which was in construction of abstract materials. For example, I have incorporated pots and strainers that we find in the kitchen into my art pieces.

What does art mean to you?

Inspiration

Art pieces based on everyday objects, which are then portrayed as extraordinary.

What tools do you use to put your spin on things?

I worked with a lot of mixed media. It is in my artistic nature to experiment with a variety of things. I like to explore all that is new and redefine all that I already know. 28 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2016

Walls are just a small part of where I like my ink and stories to end up.

Visual Artist and Storyteller Inspiration: Stories and ink.

STAFF PHOTO/YASMIN OUF

What defines your distinctive art style?

What is the essence of your work?

My work is story and concept based. I work with ink and paper/surfaces to illustrate obsessively detailed narratives. The stories create the world and the world is created by the art.

I always drew on a small scale, I did books, very intimate things; something I could sit alone with a sketchbook and create. Working on a bigger scale is not necessarily important but if it fits the moment then it makes sense.

What made you decide to use walls as your artistic canvas?

How does your character journey through your creations?

Walls are just a small part of where I like my ink and stories to end up. At the moment I predominantly work with paper and ink but I’m now exploring “space” and the use of ink to bring my stories to life. I’m moving more into the interactive art space now so stay tuned.

All my drawings are based on a story and the main character is Kamin who’s out in my Chapbook. The character always has a thread emerging from his head, which represents the story line. At the end of each story the thread is cut. Then the character goes into another story.

What tools do you use?

Ink, paper, stories, space and a slight of hand and most of my work is done using black technical pens and markers.

What is this piece that you made at Loud Art Jeddah about? This is the character going through a moment of reincarnation so his head is being cut and then it enters a new story. The body left behind becomes literally mindless. The head is the only thing using the brain and it goes on to create new worlds.

Discover the Digital Artist Who Shattered all Labels and Know the Story of Art Through His Eyes

Digital Artist and Graphic Designer Inspiration

Colors, aromas, facial expressions and everything beautiful.

Beginnings

I studied at a school for children with disabilities and after that the school

administration decided to transfer me to a government school so I could mingle with the rest of the children. It was a bit difficult at the beginning but thankfully I adapted really quickly. I reached the 5th grade but then I had to stop because of a pain in my spine that restricted me from sitting for long hours.

What is the message you aspire to deliver through your art?

“Disability does not limit giving.” Each person has a hidden talent that he must discover. Once he discovers it, he mustn’t give in to the disparaging talk he hears from others; rather he must polish his talent and keep going until he becomes a professional.

How did those around you accept your idea to go into the world of art?

In the beginning, I made a lot of effort but I was still not up to the level I wanted. So my family and friends were actually the ones to correct my mistakes in some of the works I showed them. Their notes were and still are very important to me so I always try to avoid making the same errors that they have alerted me to. This is how I gradually progressed along with my selflearning and online lessons.

It depends on the piece itself, sometimes as long as eight hours and other times up to two weeks.

What Better to Bring Stories to Life Than to Put Them in a Video?

What are the different kinds of motion graphics?

The field of motion graphics is digital footage, which creates the illusion of movements. It includes 2D, 3D, stop motion animation and live-action videos.

Tita P. won awards abroad so what gave you the idea?

In elementary school, one of my friends said that she felt sorry for the pigeons in Titanic film. I got home and wrote about that in my journal. Years later I visualized it while writing Tita P.

Tools

- Tablet and pen, to draw digitally straight into the computer. - Animation software like ToonBoom and Flash Animation. - Adobe Photoshop - Adobe Premiere

Animation with a Passion Inspiration

Childhood cartoons.

STAFF PHOTO/YASMIN OUF

What does animation mean to you?

Animation allows me to portray different scenarios that could be impossible to film; I can create a new world in the film while I’m sitting at my desk. Also, the exaggerated personalities are more fun to create and watch.

Saudis Wowing at DIFF Maram Taibah, Abdulrahman Khawj and Nada Al Mojadedi are powerfully paving their ways in the Saudi and international film scenes.

Dubai’s International Film Festival (DIFF) last December shed light on important Saudi talents. These young filmmakers are venturing into somewhat novel territory in the Kingdom and are offering some food for thought.

Favorite Movie

Michael Clayton

Film – “I Am”

“I Am” poses the everbaffling question “Who am I?” Working on building a home for “the perfect human,” Adam, an architect student, deconstructs the idea of a perfect human being.

Difficulties

The biggest one was planning the shoot, because it has a lot of repetitive shots and no dialogue whatsoever.

Wow Moment at DIFF

I was watching a French film at the festival called ‘Macadam Stories’. In the movie, a young American astronaut who doesn't speak French, tries communicating with an older French woman who doesn't speak English. Without talking they understood each other and connected. I sat there thinking, that's exactly what cinema is; that's what stories can do. It can make very different people understand each other.

HATS AND KLAPS The Electronic Music Geniuses from Jeddah. By Aabiya Baqai

Tell us a little bit about yourselves.

Hamza: (A.K.A H.A.B.) I am originally Jordanian, born and raised in Jeddah. I was 38 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2016

Amin: (A.K.A Aminotti, the son of Jeddah). I was heavily influenced by the mid-late 90s’ electronic music. I studied in Beirut; the scene was shaping nicely there and I decided to pursue music. Essentially, I’m a corporate banker by day and producer/DJ at night; the best of both worlds.

Which artists have inspired you most in your music career?

Hernan Cattaneo, Sasha, John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold would be some of our inspirations.

Take us through the process of producing a track.

Each track has its own soul. We combine aggressive and emotive sounds; we aim to connect with the listeners, take them through our journey where nothing matters but our sound. We start with the basic elements of drums, hi-hats and claps, then we work on the bass line and then everything follows.

Are there any upcoming projects you can tell us about?

We have finished tracks that will be released soon. We just finished one and we are very excited to test the crowd’s reaction. After that, we will set a release date.

What piece of advice would you give to upcoming music artists/composers?

To be fully dedicated. It takes a lot of determination and originality helps too.

greatly influenced by the late 80s and 90s. I still remember the first time I heard electronic music, and purchased my first DJ Mixer. I’m a marketing manager, so balancing is a bit difficult, but it’s fun. We like the challenge.

What inspired the name ‘Hats and Klaps?’

It’s basically hi-hats and claps; common basic elements of many forms of music. They are integral; a standard feature of the modern drum kit which often sets the rhythm of the track.

What do you think of the music scene in the Middle East?

The Middle East has some amazing talent to offer; DJs and musicians are flying all over the world to share good music. hats.klaps hats_and_klaps hatsandklaps

Tips for Younger Looking Hair What can you do for your hair?

Go Easy on the Shampoo

Shampooing daily or too frequently should be avoided; shampoos contain chemicals which cause severe dryness. Those who exercise frequently or live in humid places should let it breathe regularly and shampoo sparingly.

Lower the Heat

The overuse of heat robs your scalp of essential oils and weakens the hair follicles too. When possible, towel-dry your hair and let it dry naturally. If in a hurry, focus on drying the ends and use the cool option.

Leave it Open

Tight hairstyles pull the hair from the scalp. We may want to attain a sophisticated look, but end up paying the price of weaker hair.

Avoid Hot Showers

Hot water overdries the scalp, leaving hair brittle and dry. Make sure to wash with lukewarm water.

Don’t Forget Your Vitamins

Vitamin C helps boost collagen, while vitamin E stimulates circulation and hydrates hair follicles.

Massage the Scalp

Applying oil to hair is essential for healthy growth. More importantly, a massage invigorates the scalp and increases blood circulation. Aim to do this at least twice a week.

Skipping Daily Washes

Since water has a higher pH balance than your hair, it lifts the cuticles and Watch Your Diet removes the natural oils that make it Since your hair is healthy. Wear a Mask

Hair masks help retain moisture and deeply condition the outer cuticles, achieving stronger hair growth and shine. You can easily make homemade hair masks or find selections at Sephora and most pharmacies.

Biotin supplements improve the keratin infrastructure (a basic protein that makes up hair), but not necessarily for every hair type. So before taking Biotin, consult a doctor.

the Original Way With their previous slogan being, “No one handles beans like we do,” Hummus Refi took a new direction with Middle Eastern street food such as fool and falafel. Founder and president of Hummus Refi, Hisham Abu Ouf, studied hotel management in Jordan where he got the idea of opening up a restaurant for such foods because of how popular and important it was no matter what time of the day it was. Primarily considering using an existing franchise, Abu Ouf decided against it and opened his own restaurant. “When I was studying there, I first planned on taking on a franchise but since I was studying hotel management, I became familiar with the recipe. It wasn’t very difficult and what I liked about it was that it was very natural and healthy.” The menu is being expanded to focus on healthier items such as the reduction of ghee usage and substituting it with olive oil. Even the falafel will be tried with baking methods instead of frying.

MOOD Busters! Good food is good mood. By Amal Al Toaimi

1 2

Refined Carbs and Grain Products

Sugar

Naturally, our food choices are not always “clean” or healthy, and we tend to crave junk food a lot. We convince ourselves that we are happier after surrendering to the hidden chocolate bar or bag of chips that was not meant to be eaten for another week, but then you get that “Oh no… What did I do?” feeling.

Well, that can be your blood sugar level crashing after succumbing to the junk food temptation. There are several foods known to be mood destroyers. Below is a list of known offenders, in addition to alternatives you can choose over those cravings.

Cereal, white bread, bagels, croissants, muffins, etc.

INSTEAD Whole grains, such as whole-wheat pastas, wholegrain bread, brown rice, quinoa and oats.

Candy, sugary beverages including sport drinks, fruit beverages, fruit smoothies, etc.

INSTEAD Unsweetened coffee or tea, or water with lemon slices. Have a handful of raisins, nuts, seeds, grapes, or a piece of dark chocolate.

3

Trans Fats

Fast food, fried foods, potato chips and packaged nuts.

INSTEAD Air popped popcorn, baked potato or chilli, baked veggies, and grilled burgers (lettuce wrapped). Go for ways other than the fried option: grill, bake, roast, steam, etc.

4

Artificial Sweeteners

Splenda, Sweet n Low, Canderel, Equal, Agave Nectar, etc.

INSTEAD Raw honey, milk, carrots, beets, orange juice, maple syrup or apples.

Canned soup, deli meats and packaged dried fruit.

INSTEAD Legumes, grilled salmon or tuna would also be beneficial, as seafood is known to improve your mood.

Does Red Meat Cause Cancer? If you’re visiting the butchers soon, pause and read this first.

70 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2016

On Oct. 26 last year, a new report, published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the cancer agency of the World Health Organization, concluded after a review of the over 800 accumulated

scientific literature, that red meat should be classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans” and processed meat as “carcinogenic to humans.” According to the report, the risk in both is highest for colorectal cancer.

REPORT EXPLANATION Red Meat All types of mammalian muscle meat such as beef, veal, lamb, mutton, horse and goat. Processed Meat Meat that has been transformed through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other processes to enhance flavor or improve preservation, such as hot dogs, sausages, corned beef and biltong or beef jerky as well as canned meat and meat-based preparation sauces. How Does Processed Meat Cause Cancer? (Theories) Haem, the pigment present in haemoglobin and naturally in meat,

Should You Stop Consuming Meat?

Each 50-gram portion of processed meat eaten daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18 percent. The report places processed meat as a serious cause of cancer along with asbestos, alcohol, arsenic and tobacco.

IARC did not make dietary recommendations. However, in response to the report, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends consumers to "vary their daily protein choices by including lean meats, poultry and fish along with plants sources like beans, legumes, nuts and seeds and to limit consumption of processed meats like hot dogs."

is broken down in our gut to form a family of chemicals called N-Nitroso compounds. These can damage the bowl lining cells; the ensuing DNA damage can lead to cancer. Processed meats have added nitrogen-based preservatives found to induce a specific DNA mutation, which leads to colorectal tumors. Cooking meat at high temperatures through grilling or barbecuing forms cancerous compounds too. So, as you see, the issue is not the quality and source of red meat, but its natural composition and the processing it undergoes. Although red meat has its nutritional value (it is a good source of the highly absorbable iron, zinc and vitamin B12), if your red and processed meats consumption is high, it would be wise to start cutting down on them‌ at least until new research is released. Truth Myth

Searching the Internet for fitness and health can be a daunting experience, from an overdose of information to often misleading advice. This series aims to shed light on these hard-held beliefs still circulating in the fitness industry today. By Mirvat Ammouri

The burning feeling while working a muscle means it’s burning fat.

The burning sensation is simply lactic acid produced when a muscle is under tension for more than 15 seconds and has used up its immediate energy stores. It is NOT fat that is being burned. A muscle has three main systems to produce the energy needed to work the muscles. The first system is immediate and the energy lasts for 15 seconds. The second is quick, with the energy supply lasting for less than two minutes, but it produces lactic acid as a waste product. And the third system is slow to produce energy but it supplies the most of all.

Any fitness activity relies on all three systems, which work continuously together to produce energy. The burn we feel is exactly the lactic acid produced from system two. This acid is eventually flushed out and used as energy as the activity proceeds. When too much acid is produced and the muscles cannot flush it out fast enough, fatigue sets in and the muscles cannot contract properly.

Conclusion One cannot sense what he or she is burning as fuel for energy (sugars or fats). The workout determines which source of energy and which system is preferred. Tolerance to lactic acid and the burning feeling increases as one trains more consistently.

Recommendation KEEP • For beginners, THIS IN remind yourself MIND

that you will, with time, be better able to handle the achy feeling that the burn produces. • Some workouts are designed to produce that sensation because of the training benefits of these types of workouts. Take the challenge.

• It’s difficult to resist the burn, so instead of stopping an activity, try to take active rests (for example working a different muscle or doing some full body moves like burpees) every now and then, until you’re there. • The best way to flush out acid is to keep moving. So don’t stop the workout halfway through.

Stay tuned for more fitness myths in our upcoming issues.

INTOLERANCE IN CHILDREN Allergies: how to make it easier for your child. We hear a lot these days about food allergies; you hear allergy stories from other mommies in your child’s daycare, on social media, or on Baby Center’s portal. Food allergies are common amongst children nowadays. The reason? Some say it is genetic, pollution, or the type of diet your child consumes. Do you suspect that your child has a food allergy?

Well, from my personal experience with my child, there are signs. My daughter, 3 months old and formula fed,

80 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2016

started having diarrhea and vomiting. Being a new mom, I couldn’t think of anything but a virus. Then after several blood tests, we discovered she was lactose intolerant. So, we switched to lactose-free formula. By the age of one, she started having asthma-like coughs and since it runs in the family, the doctors assumed she has it. We started the asthma medications, but it still didn’t subside. I went to a pediatric respiratory specialist who then discovered that she was not asthmatic; she was cow milk intolerant.

There are common foods that are known to cause allergies such as peanuts. But dear mothers, monitor the symptoms and follow your instinct. Sometimes children refuse to eat a single food like fish, or throw up after digesting. If this happens, contact your doctor or read about the symptoms. When introducing new food in your child’s diet, like fish, strawberries or peanuts, start with small doses and monitor his/her body’s reaction to it. On the other hand, if you find these symptoms happening once or twice, it might just be the normal case of your child not wanting to eat or not liking the food. Keep an eye out for reactions and symptoms.

Finally, intolerance isn’t a disease, it is just the body’s reaction to certain items around your child and not all intolerances are from food. Other elements around you may cause intolerance, like certain types of flowers, pollen, dust, etc. KEEP THIS IN MIND

Most common reactions to food allergies are either on the skin, in the gastric system, or will show in their bowel system.

WE RECOMMEND... - Teach your child about their allergy, the triggers, who to go to and where. - Keep their medication nearby at all times. - Inform their teachers, classmates, friends and family members of their allergies. - Keep a supply of alternate foods. - Order allergy tags for your child (amazon.com)

Islam’s Call to Everlasting Success Islam: The road that leads to eternal peace. By Fatima Damad

Islam has established rights for everybody and are always in the best interest of every individual. Rights in Islam are given to benefit the individual and prevent any harm that might come to them.

“This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed My favor upon you and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.”[Surah Ma’idah5:3] Appreciating this, we should recognize how perfect our religion is. Words to Describe Islam

82 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2016

WORDS TO DESCRIBE ISLAM

1 Timeless 2 Encompasses Everything Good 1 3 Complete 4 Applicable Everywhere

Islam prevailed when the world was in need of knowledge and guidance and still can prevail, as it is fit for every society, be it modern or primitive. Every human that has lived and will live on Earth, can find eternal peace in Islam. Which religion can guarantee you success in this life and the Hereafter, except Islam?

Islam includes everything that is good for the human body and soul, and averts anything that might bring harm to oneself. Some things may appear evil, but in reality they are decreed for the greater good that result from them. “...Be mindful of Allah, you will find Him before you. Get to know Allah in prosperity and He will know you in adversity. Know that what has passed you by was not going to befall you; and that what has befallen you was not going to pass you by, and know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and ease with hardship.”(Tirmidhi)

It is a complete religion that requires no alteration; a complete way of life, governing from the moment of birth till death. Islam is a religion for everyone, as we were taught and can see in the rising numbers of Muslims all around the world from every race and culture. Allah says: “Say, “O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all, [from Him] to whom

belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth.” (Surah Araf 07:158)

Success can only come from following what our creator has ordered us to do. If we bring out our own functioning manual, then we are sure to be doomed. Know that Islam is complete. Web: aateam.org theislamicteam

Tell us more about deciding to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. While discussing possible locations in Africa with my family, my mom suggested climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. So, being the adventurous family we are, we made plans to climb the highest point in Africa, standing at 19,340 feet.

Last summer, we traveled to climb the highest mountain in Morocco. While my parents completed the climb, I sadly couldn’t; I wasn’t well prepared. They returned with a beautifully scenic photograph of the view. That’s when I knew I didn’t want to look at the world via a lens; I wanted to capture nature’s beauty with my own eyes.

What is the significance of taking the Saudi flag and your school flag with you? As a representative of my school, the British International School (BISJ), I carried their flag. I hope that this will be a positive influence and an inspiration to students to achieve anything they set their mind to. I carried the Saudi flag to represent my country and its people. I wish to highlight the various achievements of Saudi individuals and to inspire people around the world to follow their dreams, no matter how big or small. The Jawa's conquer Mt. Kilimanjaro.

What are your plans and aspirations for the future? While exploring the Kingdom, I plan to highlight its natural beauty. Jabal Sawda in Abha is on my bucket list. While it connects me to the desert – my favorite landscape – it also serves as an escape; a disconnect from the industrialized world. I aspire to be a successful movie director in the future. Being a movie fanatic, I’m constantly searching for new channels and ways to further polish my directing and filming skills. YouTube channels like ‘Rocket Jump’ and ‘Corridor Digital’ have inspired me.

RED SEA COAST

Captain

Ahmed Shaker A marine enthusiast, entrepreneur and advocate for the environment. By Sohila El Saadany

Who is Captain Ahmed Shaker?

I started working in the recreational marine business in 1988, in Jeddah and the GCC. In 2011, I founded Marine Development Consultancy, Captain Mako Boating & Fishing Supplies, and became the Saudi International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) Representative.

Captain Mako seems to be a different approach to selling boating and fishing supplies. What services does it offer? At Captain Mako, besides selling fishing and boating supplies, we advise our clients on the best products, even if it means referring to competition. At Marine Development Consultancy, we provide creative and sustainable solutions for our local clients in the marine sectors.

How did you get into the management of marine supplies and activities?

My love for the ocean started 42 years ago. My dad sent me to a diving class. I was extremely lucky to have a great PADI instructor, resulting in me attending sea and conservation events. Jamal Adnan, the owner of Arab

Circumnavigator Dive Center and my first employer, was a hugely inspirational mentor. I studied Marine Science; becoming an oceanographer. I used all my income to buy a boat and I became a USCG Merchant Marine. As a marine manager, I attended all the courses the International Marina Institute was offering, traveling around the world, gaining knowledge.

We’ve heard you once caught an unlikely fish from the Red Sea. Is it true?

I questioned why swordfish were not found in the Red Sea, considering the ideal temperatures and habitat. We invited the co-founder of the International Game Fish Association to Jeddah to teach us the fishing technique and help us catch one. We caught three, making history. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 95

Why do you believe that the Red Sea is the next generation gold mine?

The Red Sea is considered by experts, to be one of the last unspoiled frontiers in today's world. It has potential to become the next fishing destination because of the many undiscovered species. Watersports also have an enormous potential with a new concept that we developed, called Eco-Sport Fishing, which provides sustainable sources of environmentalfriendly activities. We need to start with working alongside the Saudi Commission for Tourism & National Heritage to establish eco-sport fishing as a touristic excursion in Saudi Arabia.

96 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2016

How can our generation enjoy the sea in ways that are both ecofriendly and sustainable? We must emphasize the importance of environment preservation with programs like Eco-Obhor, Clean Marina Program or Blue Flag Marina. We also need to develop and apply Integrated Coastal Management Plans and Environmental Impact Assessment studies to minimize the negative impact during and after construction. cmbafs

SHOAIBA’S

Spellbinding Shipwreck Shoaiba beach, a must-visit.

By Mohammed Mirza

Take in amazing views of the sunset at an earthen yellow sand beach with a mesmerizing shipwreck right off the coast overlooking you. A popular field trip location amongst some embassy run schools, this long stretch of perfectly swimmable beach is a must visit for beach lovers. Located around 70 kilometers to the south of Jeddah, this is one of the best spots near the city to view the breathtaking expanse of the royal blue colored Red Sea. As we headed south on the Jeddah – Jizan Highway, we 98

DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2016

saw factories after factories that passed by us. Jeddah’s south has a few industrial zones, the first two of which are chockfull with factories. They go on for miles near the highway.

Soon after the industrial zones ended, there was no habitation whatsoever; just a wide empty stretch of highway passing through the desert. I wonder how lone drivers keep themselves

where we saw this gigantic shipwreck off the coast away from the resort. To reach the shipwreck site we had to go off-road, following tire tracks of previous visitors.

awake on journeys in which they have to travel for hours on this road. The only moments they get to see civilization again or so to say was when the occasional petrol station passed by us. It was like we were in one of those Hollywood movies where the

plot revolves around somewhere in the Nevada desert with classical Texan country music playing in the background. We took the exit to Shoaiba and the road led us straight to a resort. We opted to go the place

The sun’s light was shimmering in the blue sea creating a beautiful contrast with the giant ship leaning at a precarious angle on our side. It is commonly referred to as the Al Fahd Shipwreck. It stands grounded in reefs with much of the ship fully intact unlike other shipwrecks in the Red Sea. The waves were calmly brushing the sides of the ship before crashing into the shore. The Al Fahd ship has a long history behind it. It was originally built in 1966 by the I.C.H. Holland, at that time it was referred to as the Ro Pax Vessel. It was then sold DESTINATIONKSA.COM 99

to the Maltese, followed by the Egyptians, who changed the ship’s name. Decades later and a number of owners and names later it finally ended up serving for 12 years in Saudi Arabia before meeting its untimely fate - being less than 50 kilometers away from its stopover point at the Jeddah Islamic Seaport. We found a place nearby that had softer sand to plant our volleyball pole and net. It was extremely windy that day, putting our well thought of plan of playing beach volleyball in danger. As we served the gusts of wind lifted the lightweight volleyball out of bounds even with the slightest touch. Following which it continued to roll fast across the beach and one of us had to run at full speed after it as it kept drifting away with each second that passed. After a somewhat failed attempt, we resorted to our second plan of the day, which was the good old 100 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2016

barbeque. We sat till late night barbecuing and eating literally to the bone. There was no light around nearby whatsoever apart from the charcoal that was being used for the barbecue. It was so dark with the moon being in its crescent stage that when one of us would step away from the light it was almost like we went into the abyss. Even the shipwreck that stood so gracefully under the sun felt like it was no longer next to us. It was like we were desert camping except

that this time we had the sea next to us, which was gently lapping the shore. We had slight difficulty however in getting back to the main road as were so far off, in a place where there were no lights and tire tracks went in all different directions. But overall it was an amazing experience. While the beach is decent, it is the large shipwreck that brings the ‘wow’ factor to it. COORDINATES 20.802017, 39.425578

The Birth of Civil Aviation in the Kingdom

KSA’s first commercial aircraft and the founding of its national airlines. By Mohammed Mirza

SOURCE PHOTO/JAZZ707.COM

In 1945, USA president Franklin D. Roosevelt presented a Douglas DC-3 aircraft to King Abdulaziz. This became the first commercial aircraft and marked the birth of civil aviation in the Kingdom. The DC-3 aircraft was soon after put into service, transporting passengers from Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran. Later that year, four additional

DC-3 aircrafts were purchased and put into service. Following which in September 1946, under the aegis of the Saudi Ministry of Defense the nation’s flag carrier, Saudia, was formed. The airport in Jeddah served as its main base. The following month the first international flight took off for Palestine and returning via Beirut carrying on it pilgrims bound for Makkah. Later that year, the first overseas office of the new airlines was taking bookings in Cairo that marked the beginning of the newly formed airlines’ international operations.
