BUSINESS

FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD

START NOW

SO LET’S GET STARTED: STEP I: CREATE A TABLE Create a table with the following items in two separate columns:

INCOME

Any income stream that will continue throughout your life (retirement benefits, property rental, bonds, dividends). Divide that figure by 12.

EXPENSES

- Estimate of the amount of money you need after exiting the job market and/or ending your career on a monthly basis. - Other needs and wants on a monthly basis (travel, medical, other). - Emergency needs.

Part one of the how-to series. You may not know the right tools used for it, so you just shelve off the thought till time is due. Well, the interesting news is that you

are probably overdue, in planning and implementing that is. And since it’s never too late, let me give you a few pointers.

Generally, financial planning depends on three key legs:

SAVING

Building

INVESTING Growing

Any sound Personal Finance plan depends on these three pillars. If this helps, think of it as a solidly built tripod; the stronger and leaner,

22 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2016

RETIRING Relaxing

the better the outcome. Note that saving and retiring are more directly related since retirement requires an early start.

STEP 2: MULTIPLY YOUR EXPENSES BY 12 - Deduct that number from the monthly income figure. - If the result is positive, then you are in a relatively safe zone. If not -which is mostly the case, due to inflation and unexpected life eventsthen please think it over thoroughly. Do not wait till it’s too late. A Guide to Using

SOCIAL MEDIA

for Your Business Thinking of expanding your horizons? Social media might be the answer. By Lama Alem

POST

CHOOSE

Social media allows direct interactionwith customers; ask for feedback without overpromoting yourself; focus on conversation and visibility, not sales. Take the constructive criticism, and ignore the “hate.

EXPLORE

Familiarize yourself with the various social media platforms. Understanding their function and uses is the first step to finding the most suitable platform.

STAFF ILLUSTRATION/SUZAN ALQUASMI

Keep in mind WHY you want to use social media; to promote, to get feedback, etc., and pick the platform that best serves your objectives.

30 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2016

PLAN

Schedule when and what you post. Organization creates a bigger picture of the brand and helps you stay consistent.

Tips to Remember

• You do not need an account on every social media platform. •Some platforms require more time and effort than others. • Stay on top of your game.

ANALYZE

Many social media platforms offer statistics and profile activity analysis. This comes in handy with your marketing strategy development. Discover your popular posts, peak response times, average customer age, etc.

•Trial and error is key; that’s how you learn what works and what doesn’t. • People love images, so use them! Infographics and short videos depict your ideas in minimal time. • Facebook and Twitter offer customercentered polls. • Use these statistics to evaluate your own performance too.

REVISE

Before sharing posts, check your spelling and grammar. For visual posts: Remember quality over quantity. Lastly, ask yourself: Does it serve its purpose and fit with your brand image?

WHY SOCIAL MEDIA? • Reach a wider number of customers. • Gather customer feedback. • Be accessible to customers and media outlets.

THE SPRING FLING How to Beat Spring Allergies It is common to confuse a cold with spring allergies so you must get yourself tested. A simple way of identifying the two is to know that allergies last longer and your sore throat is less painful. Spring allergies differ in Saudi Arabia’s diverse climate. Jeddah’s allergy triggers compose of grass, tree and floral pollens. But don’t fret! There are a few solutions you can try to relieve your discomfort.

Improve your diet. Add more leafy greens and citrus fruits to strengthen your immune system.

Exercise indoors to avoid exposure. Cover your nose.

Wear a medical mask or a napkin when cleaning your home.

NAJLA

AL BASSAM Artistic entrepreneur behind Kartt and Co. and Haya Design Studio.

By Aabiya Baqai

Winner of the Arab Women Awards: Young Designer of 2015

How would you define creativity?

Creativity is organic. It responds to the nature of my environment and evolves with the beauty of the stories and experiences of my family and friends.

As long as I can remember, I have always had an obsession with stationery and greeting cards. Slowly while working at Haya Design, my wide connections with artists around the Arab region were established, which gave me insight into the potential of multiple expressions of art within different ages, nationalities and genders. That is when I decided there must be a platform where artists receive a chance to create, no strings attached, and leave the worry of logistics to someone else; hence Kartt & Co was born in 2013. With the concept of the product line from Haya Design Studio, we work together with local talented image-makers to produce high quality greeting cards and stationery distributed in this region.

How did Kartt and Co. come about?

The artwork seen on your products seems raw and diverse. What is the selection process like for each piece? It is really about passion. If we come across an individual passionate and dedicated to their skill, we get in touch and start to develop a concept together. Our main criteria is the brand, the usage of original Arabic typefaces and calligraphy. In addition, the mix and diversity of artists is considered. Another direction would be that the talent contacts us with an idea and we refine it together until the final product. The selection of paper and final colors are up to us. However before changing colors we must take the artist’s approval.

What do you think of the art and design scene in the Middle East and what do you think is lacking?

The growth has slowly recently awakened. As long as passionate individuals are being true and creative in their professions, they will take the scene to new frontiers we never ever thought of. When we do things our own way, we then have a lot to offer to this world.

What advice would you give to upcoming artists? Be, enjoy, stay true and work hard on yourself, your passion, your interests and your hobbies. This is where innovation happens. Email: najla@haya-design.com Web: karttandco.com / haya-design.com KarttandCo / hayadesign karttandco

What’s next for Kartt and Co.?

We would like to expand and be the umbrella for all talents by going global and having more distribution points. We believe great talent has no limits or boundaries and should be appreciated.

Chitchat with Kees’s Sohayb and Faris Godus. Kees the YouTube Show has not only proved that Saudi's got talent, but it is also evident that our daily encounters have a rich potential in creating a comedy show that tackles our social issues, cracks us up, entertains us and attracts more than 1 million YouTube views per episode. 42 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2016

Is your educational background related to media, and how did you start? S: We've always had a passion for making comedy videos for fun. We produced “The Undefeatable" back in 2010 on YouTube under "Alkhatereen,” our former nickname.

F: We did not study media or cinema, but our talent and love for the domain was our motive to observe, try, discover, learn and produce more shows. Sohayb was in advertising and I studied IT, but we decided to take a leap of faith and started freelancing.

STAFF PHOTO/YASMIN OUF

By Ghada Aboud

We would like to thank our fans for their continuous support. We aim to produce more entertainment and draw more smiles on their faces. – Sohayb and Faris Godus

How did you start working on Kees? F: Our colleague at Telfaz, Moayad Al Nofaie, originally created “Kees.” I joined as a director and Sohayb a producer. We started writing the script along with acting. I became the main director and Sohayb is the head of content and an actor on the show.

Where did the name Kees come from?

Did you have a clear vision of your career as famous YouTube entertainers when you started working on these YouTube videos? S: Things took a serious turn when we finished the pilot of "Mawta Yamshoun Baynana.” This pilot allowed us to join Telfaz11 and become members of the most prominent YouTube online entertainers team.

S: "Kees," meaning disposable bag, came from our Jeddahwi slang "is this real? Or is it from your Kees?” Each sketch puts our social beliefs/traditions to the test of logic. We question if our social norms are out of conviction, or if we’re just following without questioning the reality of it.

How do you work on each episode? S: Our writing team includes Hisham Faqeeh, Ibrahim Al Khairallah and Ibrahim Mississippi. One of the most important players in the team is Nawaf Al Shobaily. F: Each member contributes valuably in brainstorming.

First there was more space for character improvisation, now we have learnt how to develop the script more efficiently.

Why do you insist on having the brainstorming session at the beginning and the middle of the episode? S: The brainstorming scenes are the main format of Kees; it gives the show its identity. F: We use it as a safeguard to the controversial topics that we tackle. We overcome viewers' radical opponent criticism by discussing it in the brainstorming. We are insane in the sketches, but reasonable in the brainstorming. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 43

Haven't you thought about developing these sketches into short movies and participating in film festivals? F: We are now more focused on investing in YouTube. The more things we try, the more our experience is refined. Then we will be ready for the next step.

What about you as head of content/ actors/directors?

S: We hope to produce a feature long film with Telfaz. Our ambition goes beyond YouTube; I see myself more as a scriptwriter and an actor in the future. F: I want to continue being a director; acting and writing helps me become a better director. keesshow

While you base your show on controversial issues, what are the red tape boundaries you face?

F: We discuss social taboos openly, but when it comes to ethics and morals, we strongly stick by them. Being bold is a positive matter, but the creative team has to use it to convey a message, not to be reckless with it. 44 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2016

Why is the female participation on the show limited?

S: We welcome female participation in Kees. However, the script and plot determines the participants. F: Only 3 percent of our casting call applicants are females. So we are looking forward to seeing more creative women who express themselves through art.

Get Your Glow Back

with these Oils Face oils: look younger, feel younger. By Zareen Muzaffar

Face oils are not restricted to those suffering from extremely dry skin. It’s one of the best ways to get supple skin and the highly coveted dewy look. Whether you go for grapeseed, coconut, jojoba, argan or almond oil; keep in mind that they vary in texture and richness. Test and trial, and inspect results.

Clarins Face Treatment Oil

Editor's Pick!

Clarins offers three kinds of face oils: lotus (combination to oily skin), blue orchid (normal skin) and santal (very dry skin). Use according to your skin type, as these rebalancing oils are made from pure plant extracts.

L’Occitane Immortelle Divine Youth Oil Interestingly, the Divine collection is formulated with Corsican Immortelle; the everlasting flower that never fades, even after it has been picked. Initially, I thought it’s just a marketing angle, but this oil does leave your skin feeling soft and it’s said to have antiaging properties as well.

Dior Instant Gentle Cleansing Oil

Jojoba Oil Excellent for sensitive skin, jojoba oil acts as a natural barrier to environmental allergens. Due to its antimicrobial properties, it helps to slow the growth of bacterial and fungal microbes. Get your hands on a bottle from healthcare stores or an apothecarist.

Dior hasn’t come out with an independent line of face oils yet, but this oil promises thorough makeup removal. A great option if you don’t want to use makeup removing pads or tissues that can leave the skin overly dry post-cleansing.

Estee Lauder Nutritious Radiant Vitality Essence Oil This oil can’t be used by itself, especially if you have dry skin. Use a few drops along with your moisturizer for an added skin boost. It is heavily fragranced, but if you don’t mind the scent, go for it.

Vitamin D3

Supplements Aimed at Combating Deficiency The sun is now in your hands.

DO SOMETHING!

The Prevalent Problem

According to a research carried out by King Saud University, vitamin D deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world. Although Saudi Arabia is one of the sunniest countries, vitamin D deficiency has been a predominant problem among the population.

What Vitamin D Does

Biologically, vitamin D basically helps make healthy bones. It also aids the body to fight infections and protect itself against the development of different types of cancer including colorectal cancer and breast cancer.

How is it Made?

Vitamin D3 is specifically made within the skin through the exposure of ultraviolet light B of the sun, or from specific food intake such as eggs, liver, fishy oils, fortified milk and cereals. 76 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2016 ADVERTORIAL

deficiency in the vitamin D level. A study carried out in 2015 showed that

84 %

of Saudi women had the deficiency due to lack of sunlight exposure during the day. This shows that the shortage of both sufficient protein food intake and sunlight can create a deficiency that is only solvable through supplements.

• Take vitamin D test. • Consult your doctor or pharmacist. • Learn about the different dosage forms of Vitamin D.

ACT Center

Sheds Light on Adult Therapy The center’s Salma Al Mufti and Khalid Sendi discuss pressing issues we face. ACT Center offers the best guidance and psychological assistance to its clients. The experts working there provide the necessary aid to ensure the wellness, comfort and happiness of their clients. Dr. Suliman and Dr. Mashmoushi, two expert doctors at the center, discuss the nature of their work there.

Salma Al Mufti

Adult Counseling Psychologist

Al Mufti sees adults who suffer from depression and anxiety, and worked with adults who have post traumatic stress, such as war refugees. A lot of people nowadays, especially young adults, tend to feel empty and unaccomplished, partly because of their constant exposure to the ‘glitz’ of media. Seeing allegedly successful people online or on TV all the time may cause them to feel irrelevant because they do not share this lifestyle.

78 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2016 ADVERTORIAL

1. Not all you see is real; the media manipulates by only revealing the picture-perfect image. 2. What defines your fulfillment and your emptiness? Is it love, money or friendship? Create a moral balance and find out what gives you the sense of contentment. 3. Don’t compare yourself to others, especially not those in media. What you see in someone is not a value system.

STAFF PHOTO/ YASMIN OUF

At ACT Center, she focuses on cognitive behavioral therapy. She explains, “This specific approach targets the negative thoughts and behaviors; bringing out more accommodating and positive behavior.” She continues, “You train your brain the same way you train your muscles in the gym. It takes time and effort.”

There are three very important things that must be taken into consideration:

Khalid Sendi

Self-Development and Relationship Therapist

As relationships constitute a large part of adults’ lives, Sendi offers an insight on marital and premarital therapy. Sendi says, “My role is to help families live a fulfilling life. I meet the partners individually at the beginning just to understand them separately and then I meet them together as a couple.”

Premarital counseling is crucial here since 80 percent of marriages are arranged. — Dr. Khalid Sendi

He elaborates on the most common couple problems, “Most of the times the main issues revolve around children. Lately, economic problems have played a factor in marital difficulties. One of the recurrent topics is the interference of the parents of each partner in the latter’s life.” He also believes that premarital counseling is crucial, especially here, where 80 percent of marriages are arranged.“When the couple undergoes premarital counseling, they get to know each other well and comprehend their personal differences better.”

Premarital Counseling Encompasses: 1. Emotional intelligence and love language tests. 2. Debates: To explain different perspectives. 3. Activities to deepen their respective understandings of each other.

It spans over three months, after which the couple has full authority to choose to continue or go their separate ways.

JISH

A Voice That Must Be Heard

Setting the Bar

By Sahrish Ali

Established in 1991, Sultana Alireza and Waleed Zahed co-founded Jeddah Institute for Speech and Hearing (JISH), the first freestanding specialty clinic in the Gulf region. We explore their mission and the subsequent journey they have embarked on to guarantee communication disabilities’ sufferers have access to quality services regardless of their economic situation.

80 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2016

Zahid and Alireza recruited two highly respected professors in communication disorders and speech sciences from the USA to help them set up and operate the institute according to the standards set by the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA). Over the years, Alireza worked closely with the couple to learn how to run the institute.

Professional Development: Teaching and Training

The institute is by default a training and teaching center as well as a clinic and research center. Several senior staff members are also associate professors at Dar Al Hekma University; they helped found their SSLH (Speech Sciences Language and Hearing Division), which still runs strong. “We provide symposiums accredited by the Saudi commission for specialties by the Ministry of Health so when you receive training during our conferences, you can get continuing education units.”

STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMED FAWZY

JISH on raising awareness for those with communication disabilities.

Board certification was necessary to work independently as a therapist, and at the time none were available in the Kingdom, so Alireza and her husband set out to create their own. A contract was signed with the University of California, San Jose. “It took us four years and in that time we graduated 13 people with Masters degrees. That was the first group of many JISH scholars that were to follow over the past 25 years.”

DIVISIONS AND SERVICES Autism Services and Applied Behavior Analysis The ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) clinic is the first of its kind, founded about seven years ago. It is about to undergo a complete restructuring again as JISH has signed an affiliation agreement with the world re-known scientist and researcher Dr. Vincent Carbone, NYC, USA.

Early Intervention Division The JISH Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a languagebased intensive service for toddlers with language delay. Human contact and socialization is the most important factor in language and social development in babies and toddlers. JISH is also affiliated to Hanen as a training center for parents, providing intensive training to parents.

Charities and Non-Profit

Being a non-profit organization, their well-received Patients’ Sponsorship Fund only subsidizes for families in need. In the past, they had an initiative with the Amal School For the Deaf where teachers were trained to provide services, which ran until they became self-sufficient.

Initiatives

JISH supports the work and standards set by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties in an effort to improve the quality of clinical practice in the Kingdom.

One of their initiatives is lobbying with SSSPA (Saudi Society Speech Pathology and Andrology Association) to expand services and make them accessible through insurance companies.

Reaching New Horizons

“Our heart is set to expand our services to the rural areas.” JISH has produced 50 clinicians over the past 25 years - a great feat. The aim is to continue providing educational opportunities.

Message: Public Awareness “It’s crucial that the moment a mother feels anxious about her child’s language or development, she doesn’t wait. There may be a delay in language and eventually they do speak even without intervention, but the longer they take the more it impacts learning. If I have any message it is that early detection leads to early intervention and saves time.”

Surviving Your First Workout Class You can do it! Just follow these tips. So you’ve decided you want to join a group workout class instead of your normal routines, but you are a bit nervous on how the class will be and whether or not you would be able to catch up with the rest? Well there’s nothing to be nervous about, we’ve all been there. Here are some tips to help you ease through your first couple of classes.

Most importantly don’t quit.

RESEARCH

First of all take some time to research a bit about the class. For example, the class is boot camp. Find out the fitness level required to enter the class, ask the gym/ instructor if it’s a private training center, ask for more info on what types of boot camps they are running; will it include weights, is it outdoors, etc. Knowing what you are getting yourself into will help you feel more at ease.

GO EARLY

Be there before the scheduled time. This will give you time to speak to the instructor and introduce yourself; also you can mention any difficulties or injuries you have or ask them any questions. Going early can also give you a chance to mingle and ask other members about their thoughts of the class.

DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS!

A general rule of advice would be to not compare yourself to anyone else. If you feel that you have overworked yourself or are really tired, do not look at the person next to you and try to compete. If you need a break then give yourself a break, you are just getting started.

Force yourself to keep going and be committed and you will start seeing results with time. HOLY QUR’AN

A GUIDE TO SALVATION The infinite rewards of Qur’an recitation. “And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?” (54:22) The Qur’an, the speech of Allah, which was revealed to the Last Messenger in the Arabic language through Angel Jibreel, is a source of ultimate guidance for mankind. We learn from the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) many virtues for reciting the Qur’an with a pure intention.

1. Tranquillity and Mercy Descend The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Any group of people that assemble in one of the Houses of Allah to recite the Book of Allah, learning and teaching it, tranquillity will descend upon them, mercy will engulf them, angels will surround them and Allah will make mention of them to those in His proximity.” (Sahih Muslim)

86 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2016

2. Countless Rewards for its Recitation The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.” (Al Tirmidhi)

3. Raise in the Ranks The Prophet (PBUH) said: “One who was devoted to the Qur'an will be told to recite, ascend and recite carefully as he recited carefully when he was in the world, for he will reach his abode when he comes to the last verse he recites.”

(Sunan Abi Dawud)

4. Closest to Allah The Prophet said: “'Allah has His own people among mankind.' They said:'O Messenger of Allah, who are they?' He said: 'The people of the Qur'an, the people of Allah are those who are closest to Him.'” (Sunnan Ibn Majah)

5. It Acts as an Intercessor on the Day of Judgment The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Read the Qur'an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection.” (Muslim)

6. The Best in Conduct The Prophet (PBUH) said, “The best amongst you is the one who learns the Qur'an and teaches it.” (Sahih Al Bukhari)

Also, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “I am leaving behind me two weighty things. One of them is the Book of Allah; that is the strong rope of Allah. Whosoever holds firmly to it, will be the guided, and whosoever leaves it goes astray.” (Riyad As Saliheen) Web: aateam.org theislamicteam

The Cradle of European Civilization? A glimpse of Al Andalus, mother of tolerance and civilization.

Cordoba from Watch Tower

90 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2016

In this journey through two of the key cities of Muslim Spain, Cordoba, the Umayyad

Caliphate’s capital; and Granada, where it all came to an end, we will offer a glimpse of Al Andalus through its most important and charming remnants.

CORDOBA

Whilst tourists head to Granada, connoisseurs come to Cordoba. “Europe was darkened at sunset, Cordoba shone with public lamps; Europe was dirty, Cordoba built a thousand baths … Europe lay in mud, Cordoba’s streets were paved … Europe’s nobility could not sign its name, Cordoba’s children went to school; Europe’s monks could not read the baptismal service, Cordoba’s teachers created a library of Alexandrian

Greece and Italy are often cited as the cradles of modern western civilization, where we get notions of democracy, academia and more. However, an increasing number of people are starting to question this notion and instead are appreciating the significance of the Muslim period in Spain Al Andalus (711-1492). A time when culture, civilization, academia and society peaked, it even included periods of amazing inter-faith tolerance. Could it be that in fact Spain is the real cradle of European civilization?

achievement was designed to appear like a forest of palms, allowing light to flood in and the praying spirit to soar. Opened in 785 AD, on the site of the Church of St. Vincent, which Abd Al Rahman had bought, today it is again a Christian place of worship. That was irreversibly sealed in the 16th century, when the center of the mosque was ripped out and replaced with a cathedral. Fortunately, the stunning scallop-shaped mihrabs remain.

It may have lasted a mere 30 years, but this palace city was built by Abd Al Rahman III in the 10th century to make a statement. He had declared himself Caliph of Islam - the only time a caliphate was declared in Europe. Madinat Al Zahra took 10,000 laborers setting 6,000 stone blocks a day for 40 years to complete, and was completely sacked by Al Mohads. This is why today, at times it can seem like an uninspiring pile of rocks, somewhat compensated by the impressively new museum built into the ground, which contains interesting exhibits and an auditorium showing what the opulent palace city would’ve looked like in its brief heyday. was essentially a token gesture since the terms of surrender had been agreed months before, this signaled the end of nearly 800 years of Muslim and Jewish presence in the country.

sinks with soap and tissues; so cleanliness was taken care of. Concerning snacks, juice and water, these were found abundantly. One of the highlights of the trip must be the delicious tea we were served, mint tea and Adani tea; all prepared on wood right on the spot.

Safari

Three sturdy jeeps drove up to our camp. Each was equipped with the necessary items ranging from lights to aux cables and more. Braving the desert as we collided into sand dunes and ravished the sand with the grand wheels.

Horse Show

First off was the horse show. Riders came in on three horses to show off their galloping talents. Immediately after that we were told to stand back as a raging horse-beast was to ride in, only to be surprised by the most adorable miniature horse. We got up on those horses and tried our riding skills.

Camel Rides

Because what is a desert without a camel? Adorned in colorful decorations, the camel was a great source of entertainment.

Quad Bikes

The list of fun activities continues on the quad bikes. All of our “Fast and Furious alter egos hop on and take the lead. As if quad touring can become more fun, it took place before sunset so we were able to watch the sky change colors.

Falcon Show

Sheikha, the falcon, was there to give us a show. But alas, she flew into the darkness leaving us without the bedazzlement of falcon tricks.

Karaoke

We were all able to take part to show off our horrendous voices. The karaoke segment was also provided by Talaea tours. The TV, speakers, microphones and even song lists were there to witness the butchering of famous melodies.

Dinner

The cherry on top was the dinner served at the finale of the trip. We were served scrumptious grilled food. Barbeque aroma filled the air and tasty meat gave our taste buds a fiesta.

FOR THE BEST SHOTS... Nothing like photos during sunrise and sunset. Beautiful!

On the Trail of a

Natural Hot Water Spring Following the stream leading to the water. By Mohammed Mirza

While many disbelieve the chances of there being natural springs in KSA, much to their astonishment there is at least one known spring in the country. In fact, some local water companies boast of their water being sourced from natural springs. The specialty about the springs at Al Lith is that they are natural hot springs, something one would expect to find only in places like Europe or Japan.

100 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2016

Although they are commonly referred to as Al Lith Hot Springs, the spring is not actually in the town of Al Lith - it is situated around 50 kilometers from there. Close but not quite there.

The Journey

The ride to the town of Al Lith from Jeddah was an easy one for us as it is located on the major Jeddah-Jizan Highway. This same highway goes all the way to Yemen as well. Once at Al Lith we knew that we wouldn’t be left with many options for food, so we decided to eat at a massive

food court in the main city. The place we stopped at has a plethora of restaurants and sits right on the main highway. It is also a popular stopover for buses carrying travelers to the southern parts of the Kingdom. We had what Al Lith is known for – seafood. As expected it was tasty enough, despite its lack of spices. We got off the highway and headed onto an adjacent single lane road. This road goes all the way to the hot spring, running through a number of small villages on the way. There were just two signboards on this road, which confirmed that we were heading in the right direction. The road itself was flanked by small trees, and right before we reached the spring, the greenery in the surroundings seemed to increase. A final signboard marked the location and from there the springs were a stone’s throw away. We parked our cars and walked towards the water.

Luxuriant grass greets us.

A stream running into a thick forest.

On the Trail of a Stream

There were multiple streams gushing from the spring. We put our hands in the nearest one to us and much to our surprise it was refreshingly cold.

We couldn’t see where these streams started. We walked over them until we came across the biggest one. At that time we were told by a passerby that the hot spring was to the east of us. We decided to visit the hot springs later and explore the stream in front of us that meandered its way calmly into the unknown. Here it felt like we were in the middle of a tropical rainforest with all the lush green trees and luxuriant grass that surrounded us. The stream was flowing from the north and we walked by it towards its source.

We continued walking, with the stream at times getting kneehigh. There were areas where we barely made it through because of the thorny plants that blocked the way. We continued till we could go no further and by then the stream had gotten visibly smaller. Nearby was a place where the dense forest opened up into a desert that had a beautiful backdrop of chestnut-colored mountains.

I found it to be quite similar to a previous hiking experience I had in the jungles of Kodaikanal in India. The place felt so tranquil; a spot where one could just lie down, hear the birds chirp and listen to the pleasant sound of the flowing stream. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 101

earth’s mantle. They are normally found in volcanic regions. In KSA, this hot spring near Al Lith is the only known one in the country so far.

The Hot Spring

At the Hot Springs

We then went on to where the hot springs were. From a distance we could see groups of people just standing by it and staring deeply into it. Some were even seen filling big plastic bottles with 102 DESTINATION JEDDAH MARCH 2016

water from the spring, as hot springs are known for their high mineral content and medicinal properties. Hot springs are produced when geothermally-heated groundwater rises from the

However, this hot spring has higher than bathing temperatures, so hot in fact that we couldn’t place our hands in it for more than a second; perhaps just enough to get our feet and hands cleaned by quick taps on the water. The hot springs were muddy and had algae growing in it, which is surprising considering its high temperatures. On the whole, we were left in awe by the experience, as it was the first time for us to see one in real life. But what we enjoyed more than that was the trail of the stream that we followed. Definitely a place worth visiting.

HISTORIC KSA

The Mysterious Wells of Al Kharj The history of Oyoun As Seeh and Oyoun An Najm. By Mohammed Mirza

These wells have been used by the residents of Al Kharj and travelers for centuries, but of late the wells have dried up; though some amount of water can be seen in them after it rains.

Located less than a kilometer apart, two huge natural wells known as Oyoun As Seeh and Oyoun An Najm are one of the biggest attractions of Al Kharj, less than an hour drive from Riyadh.

SOURCE PHOTO/FLICKR.COM/ALHARBISEYE

While some believe that they had been formed by a meteor shower, others disagree and suggest that they are actually massive sinkholes; sinkholes so deep that they have reached the watery beds within the earth’s crust.

While the exact time of the formation of these wells is not known, records show the area near the wells to have been inhabited for over a millennium.

Recently, the wells have been fenced off but it still hasn’t deterred visitors. When the peninsula used to struggle for drinking water, Al Kharj had plenty of it, boasting of date farms and pastures that were unseen in the region. This oasis in the desert did not only have these wells as part of its water supply, it was also blessed with a network of ponds and natural aquifers. Considering its rich past abundant with water, an iconic water tower was constructed in the city that even has a revolving restaurant inside it. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 103
