FROM THE EDITOR

Ramadan Kareem! The smell of burning incense and the sight of do-gooders giving away care packages at stoplights can only mean one thing: The Holy Month is here. The world, and the region more specifically, has taken a few hits in the past year. But with the arrival of Ramadan, we all need to be reminded of our humanity. Ramadan is all about unity and solidarity, so this issue focuses on connecting with the world in a positive way. This month, we’re bringing you inspiring stories of Muslims from around the world. Uplifting stories about social entrepreneurs, heroes and everyday people who will hopefully push some of us to make a conscious decision to be kind to the world and to each other. The article Muslim Heroes is very close to our hearts. With all the negative press surrounding Muslims, we wanted to take back the narrative and show what Islam is all about. The people mentioned in the article have all fundamentally impacted the lives of the people around them with their acts of courage or ingenuity. When you put down our magazine this month, we hope you feel a little more connected, because that is the greatest thing humans do. We connect with each other.

NÜN ACADEMY ALL STUDENTS ARE DIFFERENT Where teaching transforms to learning.

The Nün Academy Team

It all began with an idea to develop a school which could provide students with international high quality education without having to accept the trade off of giving up on their own language and heritage. It also had to be a school using modern ways of teaching, and that is where Swedish partner Kunskapsskolan came in, with their proven KED Program for personalized learning. Based on the successfully proven approach of the KED program by Kunskapsskolan, an international network of 24 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2016

schools for managers, teachers and students to cooperate and collaborate in several countries. When asked how Nün Academy aimed to achieve this, Nirmeen Alireza, the Educational Director replied, “The KED Program provides a proven structure for this that puts the student and the student’s learning at the center, restructuring every resource around the student. The KED Program also caters for a glocal (global and local) approach at the same time. Through the KED Network

teachers and students connect with other KED Schools worldwide, preparing the students for a global life. Yet, it has no set curriculum, in each country the KED Schools follow different curriculums providing ample room for local grounding.”

One core element of Nün Academy is to realize that every child is unique, and that education has to be rethought and redesigned based on this. — Nirmeen Alireza

Fatma Sheibani, Head of Administration/Admissions

Kenneth Neyman, Senior Academic Director of Kunskapsskolan

“Each student has a personal coach. With the guidance of their coach, our students set and work towards their own personal goals. Students allocate their study time based on their previous educational experience as well as their individual strengths and weaknesses. Personalized education should not be confused with students being left on their own without guidance or teaching. This is not about cutting down teacher resources, it is about maximizing teachers time spent on their most important task – teaching and coaching,” says Alireza. Nün Academy, in cooperation with Kunskapsskolan and Emkan Education, a local consultancy, developed a

digital learning portal, the first of its kind. It is based on international and regional curriculums which have been adapted to ensure high international academic standards, local grounding and character development. The learning portal allows students to take ownership of their learning, as the full curriculum and a large part of the learning material is structured and accessible online. The Portal enables teachers to work in a structured way and together with induction and ongoing professional training throughout the year, the teachers are allowed to become excellent educators.

Both Kunskapsskolan and Nün Academy are valuedriven organizations that embody the following: • Ethic of excellence • All people are different • High expectations • Glocal education • Human consciousness • Education for life and beyond • Agency and empowerment with “Life is what I make it.” Mob: +966-509939702 Web: nunacademy.com nunacademy

ACT CENTER GIVING BACK TEN FOLDS ACT Center giving back and paying it forward to ensure the wellbeing of the community. The establishment of ACT was a convergence of like-minded individuals who formed a team with the intention to give back to their city. There was a need to have a hub of helping hands in regards to mental and emotional wellbeing for all ages, especially in Jeddah. No other center offers services as diverse as ACT. 26 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2016 ADVERTORIAL

COMMUNITY

The team at ACT exists for their clients. During the past 4 years, they have been aiding with the psychological and emotional welfare of individuals and families by providing accessible and innovative mental health care services. A community charity fund has been put in place, which is used to giving back to society. The center has taken on several pro bono cases, such as those afflicted with illnesses, those going through trauma and PTSD, people who have taken refuge and many more. There are several ways that people can reach out through ACT, either to get or give help.

For example, individuals can take on cases by offering to sponsor someone financially. They can also extend their time and services with the ACT team to help refugees, cancer patients and others who have suffered abuse of any form. Abuse of any kind might not be stoppable that easily, but collective effort may be the way to constrain it. When a person goes through trauma of any kind, there are long-term repercussions that influence the individual's loved ones. The Center helps patients with chronic illnesses cope with their illnesses and work on the psychological aspect. Act, through its continuous work, has addressed these issues. The center focuses on building a safe haven where it is always easy to get help, whether its adults or children.

Recently, the team was involved with Dubai’s 10K marathon for raising money so free therapy and services could be provided to those who have been abused and maltreated. All proceeds went to covering assessments, personal and family therapy and providing support groups. Join ACT’s mission to alleviate others’ pain and help our community in aspects where it is most needed. At the core of ACT’s heart lie the values of respect, compassion, trust, quality of service and confidentiality. ACT is here to help those who are in need, to create a community that flourishes together. Tel: +966-12-261 5950 Web: actjeddah.com actcenter

BUSINESS

FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD THE COST OF LEARNING

A NEW LANGUAGE

For best results, Maha Noor Elahi (@MahaNoorElahi), an English Language Lecturer at Dar Al Hekma University, offered the following tips:

• Determine your learning objective. Is it basic or business communication skills; academic certification; research writing or other? • Check the specialty and strength areas of your learning institute before signing up. Some centers focus on conversational English (or other languages) while others focus on grammar and writing. • Check the credentials of the instructors and the teaching staff. If the desired language is not the mother tongue of the instructor, do check their background and years in training.

The growing demand for training courses and certification probably reflects a growth in awareness and interest in self and career development. In general, education has gone through several phases of change in format. With the advent in Internet infrastructure and mobile landscape, the search for and acquisition of information and knowledge soared. A true revolution has ensued. In Saudi Arabia, the demand for ESL (English as a Second Language) 28 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2016

training saw unprecedented growth especially with the commencement of scholarship programs in 2010. The cost of such training is often high (sometimes north of SR 4,000 per month) but the quality of the outcome does not always match the price. I personally recommend that no training should be attempted without discussing the objectives and course methods first. Many students pay large fees expecting quick results. When it does not work, all they remember is the financial cost.

• Do not assume that the promised course duration will deliver best results. Learning varies across students and so does the effort and level of persistence. • A certificate is worth nothing if it is not coupled with real learning. That is why you should not buy your way to progress. Work it up. The Author: Reem Asaad is an inspirational Saudi woman. She is a wife, mother, writer and financial adviser. GIVING THE REIGNS of Entrepreneurship to the Next Generation KAEC talks entrepreneurial competitions, business tips and the bigger economic picture. By Aabiya Baqai

Being an ardent believer of the above mentioned and an advocate for entrepreneurial activity with its Entrepreneurship Ecosystem, King Abdullah 30 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2016

Economic City has launched The World Academy Youth Entrepreneurship Sprint, a business plan competition for grade 10 and 11 students. The team-based and twomonth competition, organized in partnership with the World Economic Forum Global Shapers Community, challenged students to identify and develop solutions for issues in the areas of energy, education, women empowerment, health, water and poverty.

“Motivating students in entrepreneurship is having the ability to allow students to imagine, to be creative, to take and manage risks, to have a can-do attitude and the drive to make ideas happen, says the Principal of The World Academy at KAEC, William Fraser.

Students solving a treasure hunt clue.

Developing entrepreneurial skills as part of education helps students build the abilities they will need to excel in all areas of endeavor. — Fahd Al Rasheed, Group CEO and Managing Director of KAEC

The winning team received SR 5,000 to implement their plan along with complimentary office space in the KEE Zone space at KAEC and ongoing mentoring and training support.

Jeddah Shapers Team

It included sessions and workshops facilitated by international trainers and mentors from KAEC and other established operations in the city. Research by the European Commission has indicated that 20% of students who participate in businessrelated activities at secondary school will later start their own company.

How to start a business successfully: • Get a business plan • Brainstorm business ideas. • Conduct a thorough resource assessment and a feasibility study. • Think about start-up capital to ensure a winning idea.

By creating the suitable environment for new businesses, the city aims to support the growth of small and mediumsized enterprises as they contribute to around 33 percent of Saudi Arabia’s GDP and provide a little under 20 percent of jobs, according to the SME Finance Forum.

Team activities: treasure hunt.

Tips on getting the youth involved: • Never say, “that can’t be done” because a solution is always available. • Teach them to “think outside the box” • Make sure they are prepared to fail and ready to take a risk.

Providence, Rhode Island Hasan Abuabdallah, 21

Not having to cook every day is a blessing. Having friends is great; we did a handful of cook-overs and group dinners since a house is the only place that has no closing hours. But it’s mostly the online food delivery, which is seriously a life changer.

Manchester, United Kingdom

Tokyo, Japan arbi, 27 Abdulaziz Alh

Our day here in Japan is only one hour longer than Saudi. But all shops including the gyms close really early so it is hard to have fun outside during Ramadan.

What's the first thing you learned how to cook when you had to make your own iftar? We didn't really have to cook anything, as we would get bags of food from the cafeteria's cook. She was pretty generous with the portions and she would always make these exquisite cheese breads!

Kingston, Canada Abdulmalik Zubailah, 19

g Something you missed durin e for tak to d use u yo t Ramadan tha granted at home? Two things:

Abdullah Alotaibi The first Ramadan I spent abroad was in Manchester in 2012. Maghrib prayer was almost after nine, so we only prayed the night prayer on the weekends since its timing was late. There was an old British Muslim man in our institute, who was overjoyed with our presence and he’d join us for iftar at times. He became a friend and even saw us off at the airport.

1- Reaching home by iftar time to find all kinds of healthy and delicious dishes prepared.

Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Mohammed Fahad, 20

2- Gathering at meal times. It adds a special flavor to Ramadan. When all the family gathers up in one place, even your relatives who live far away.

CAPTURING THE SPIRIT OF RAMADAN By Aabiya Baqai and Sahrish Ali

SPIRIT OF RAMADAN

Inspired by Humans of New York, Humans of Ramadan was initiated by Usama Malik last year. Malik traveled to different Texan state cities to visit several mosques and asked people about their backgrounds and experiences, hoping to shed light on the time when Muslims are closest to their faith and to show their diversity, beauty and wisdom. He plans to continue his project with a wider audience.

for iftar picnics. It’s the holy month of connecting deeply to religion and to Arab pride that appears through embroidered linen gowns, fried goods, bazaars and packed mosques.

There’s a certain whiff in the air around town, and it’s not the humidity signaling the beginning of a scalding summer. It’s the cooling wave of spirituality and excitement of Jeddawis anticipating for the holy month of Ramadan.

It starts with a decorating trip to Souq Al Shate’, with the flamboyant red and Islamic designs covering every corner, with customers haggling their way to get the best deals from the little shops. Singing lanterns and decorative ornaments that dangle from palm trees illuminate the streets and the hearts. The month is only official when your mom asks you to bring down the box of gimmicks from storage.

Cruising around the cornich, you start seeing a trace of Ramadan lights going up with an aroma of cardamom and coffee at kiosks preparing

Soon, kindness will radiate through the streets with young men standing at traffic lights waiting to feed those stuck in traffic at iftar and neighbors

extending hellos and food platters. More importantly, you will reunite with your loved ones over a decadent table of food. It’s about the old meeting the new, Al Balad revisited with floods of people remembering old Hijaz, the different generations getting together without the excuse of life or stifling schedules.

Lastly, it’s about our Islamic heritage brought back home to where it all started, with Makkah and Madinah just a drive away. It’s about being close to the spirit of Islam alongside our modern celebrations in a city Muslims can call home.

What’s the concept behind your art?

I am fond of exploring the paradoxes and dualism in our modern life. My characters embody my message to create lively windows of silent, yet honest

EXCEPTIONAL ART With Hend Al Thubaity

Our artist of the month creates mesmerizing creations that merge traditional and modern together. By Sahrish Ali

ABOUT THE ARTIST

“I am a lecturer at King Abdulaziz University. There are a few coming exhibits that will be announced soon. But mostly I post my work daily on my Instagram page.”

ART AS A PASSION

Al Thubaity grew up around art and it became part of her personality from an early age. Since grade school she learned working with traditional oils, then started dabbling with mixed mediums. Her biggest fans and main support started with her family and twin sister.

One of Al Thubaity's latest works now adorns the walls of Medd Café.

DESCRIBING HER ART

Merging traditional and modern.

Check out the poster to see Al Thubaity’s latest artwork done exclusively for Destination!

As with any art project, there are many hidden elements that the artist knows and experiences. She explains blending everyday objects with a fantastical twist. “I would call it contemporary Islamic art. My art arises from contemporary concepts, which focus on our traditional notions and modern world perception. However, my designs are inspired by traditional Islamic art geometry. My illustrations depict the geometric repetitions that echo my concepts.”

ART MEDIUMS

The kind of mediums you use for your art plays a huge role in defining your art style. Our artist mostly focuses on mixed media paintings and then digitally transforms them. Sometimes she creates pottery pieces out of her illustrations. “I would say my work is mostly a mash up of all the different forms of art that I have learned and experienced.” hano369od

CHALLENGING THE TRADITIONAL BOUNDARIES Her traditional influences are evident in her work.

I am an Islamic art graduate so Islamic geometric designs have always been inspiring to me. I use conceptual design while sticking to traditional Islamic pattern concepts; it has always been a form of decorative art to me. My work arises from using motifs that are from today’s world while implementing the same traditional techniques. — Hend Al Thubaity

Eyad Mashat How Did He Make It? Eyad Mashat discusses his entrepreneurial passion and femi9’s success.

Why fashion?

Having the know-how surely has a strong influence; Al Mashat family has been working in fashion and retail since 1934. I have been involved hands-on in all related processes from a very young age, and I have grown to love it.

My dream was to have a widely spread womenswear brand, with many branches across Saudi Arabia, I wanted to be serving women in all cities. My vision was to grow a powerful entity in my country.

What was your ultimate goal behind launching femi9?

To you, what is success?

In my opinion, you succeed when you achieve milestones towards your vision and as it evolves, you set new milestones and track your accomplishments along the way. That is what makes success so rewarding, it validates your potential and raises your bar.

Tell us about the femi9 brand revamp. Why and how?

STAFF PHOTO/YASMIN OUF

How did the idea of femi9 first spark?

I was 25 years old, finished with my college degree in Switzerland, back in Saudi Arabia and driven to launch my own fashion business; and so I did, but that was not femi9. I launched another fashion brand that lived for only 8 months – tried and missed. I did not succeed in exploring the psychology of my target market and understand its needs. That was the time when I had a serious reality check, where I assessed my experience and derived learnings which set me to create femi9 with more confidence and experience.

We rebranded femi9 in 2012, introducing the market to a clearer brand identity and an enhanced shopping experience. It was a key milestone that we had to undertake; the market is evolving, we understand our customer better, and femi9 was ready to go to the next level. The new logo merges between English and Arabic, communicating that the brand comes from an Arabian origin and operates with international standards. The stores and all other brand

touchpoints were refreshed to convey the brand feel and serve our customers better.

Tell us about your experience in Tedx Jeddah. A lot of the achievements I work towards are inspired by my family, Tedx was one of them. My eldest daughter, Tala, was looking forward to my Tedx talk; knowing that, I was eager to truly deliver – to Tala and to the audience attending. The topic I addressed was titled ‘Decoding Your Fears’; fear holds us back and limits us. My talk focused on how you can decipher your fears and eliminate them, in order to achieve your vision and reach your potential.

Your vision for femi9 by 2020 We plan to have reached 100 branches; femi9 will be available with 72 stores by 2017 and we are working on mega-expansion projects.

WORDS OF ADVICE -Be you, do what you believe in, and don’t let fear limit you. -Your passion is your fuel; it drives you further than you think. -Ego is the enemy that leads you to failure to below your point of start, below 0. - Always have a Plan B and also secure a Plan C.

“Cool, smart, rebellious and modern,” is how Rosso describes Diesel.

DIESEL’S MASTERMIND The Jeans Genius talks Jeddah, Diesel and advertising. By Nafeesa McDowell

Meet Renzo Rosso,

What do you think of Jeddah?

Last night, I toured Al Balad. I love the little stores, the Hejazi architecture, the beautiful carpets and the busyness; an exciting vibe. I even took pictures of T-shirts with traditional decorations.

What inspires you?

Everything inspires me. When I have an idea, the style and creative teams work with it as a direction. 66 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2016

Your take on advertising is different. Most brands feature celebrity faces in their campaigns, but not yours.

If you are using celebs, it is not you talking, but the celebrity. We want our product to talk and this is why we go with normal people who are not so normal. It’s more loyal and relatable to the consumer.

Would you think of customizing Diesel’s collections just for our region?

When you listen to music, if you don’t hear the same song as everyone else, you feel second best. So I want to use one tone of language globally, because we are for everyone, but I like the idea of doing special customizations for certain regions.

That would be great! Like the abaya?

I have to tell you, over the last few days, I have seen the abayas and I am thinking of doing something.

I’TIKAF DURING RAMADAN The last 10 days brought alive with stronger faith, prayers and du’aas. By Sahrish Ali

I’tikaf is the Prophet’s sunnah; the profound spiritual practice of secluding oneself during the last 10 days of Ramadan for meditation and prayers. Prophet Mohammed PBUH would stay in the mosque away from his family and friends during the entire last 10 days. Meditation during i’tikaf gives your mind calm and focus; instead of becoming preoccupied with your life and external world, we focus on our iman (faith) and inner spiritual world. Conditions of I’tikaf: Similar to other manasek (rituals), you should be a capable and sane Muslim, with the correct intentions, in addition to staying at the mosque - for men only. Fasting is an obvious prerequisite. Once your intention is set, i’tikaf can be done in any mosque.

DOs:

• Take care of your health by eating and sleeping well. • Recite Qur’an and supplications and avoid disturbing others. • Remember to pack smart with all your essentials; necessary medication and a first aid kit, along with clean clothes and sanitation supplies. • Be considerate of others at all times; the Prophet (PBUH) advised his companions to not eat strong-scented food to avoid disturbing others during prayers.

DON’Ts:

• Talk about worldly affairs; your focus should be entirely on the afterlife. • Stay online all the time or waste time. If you plan to go to Al Masjid Al Nabawi, you should register online and take the printout with you.

Link to register for I’tikaf in Madina: eservices.wmn.gov.sa

(Please note: The Masjid Al Nabawi website is primarily in Arabic. You can navigate to “Visitors’ Services” on the menu and select “I’tikaf Request”. The registration page itself is available in four different languages). 98

THE HOLY MONTH During the holy month, over the course of years, several significant fetes in Islamic history took place. By Nafeesa McDowell

THE FIRST REVELATION OF THE QUR’AN The Prophet (PBUH) was known to find solace and refuge in Heraa’ cave and on one blessed night, one of the odd nights within the last 10 days of Ramadan, Angel Jibril descended to reveal the first ayahs of the Qur’an: Surat Al Al A’laq. Laylat Al Qadr, the revelation night, is more rewarding than 1,000 months.“Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].” (Surah 44: Ayah 3)

THE BATTLE OF BADR On Ramadan 10, the Muslims embarked on the battle of

100 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2016

Badr, named after the well it took place next to. The small number of Muslims, in comparison to the larger forces of Quraysh and their allies, caused Muslims to doubt and fear for their lives. Badr was a lesson for all Muslims on yakeen; conviction in Allah and tawakkul; reliance on Allah. Allah gave the Muslims victory on Ramadan 17, with the help of a thousand angels. “[Remember] when you asked help of your Lord, and He answered you, "Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another.” (Surah 8: Ayah 9)

THE CONQUEST OF MAKKAH After Quraysh’s efforts in helping the tribe of Banu Bakr to attack Bani Khuzaa’a, the 10-year Hudaibiyya peace treaty was broken. Following this on Ramadan 6, up to 10,000 Muslims joined forces to march on Makkah, using

secretive tactics to divert the attentions of the other tribes. Upon entry on Ramadan 18, the idols placed in the Ka’bah and around it were all destroyed and Makkah was conquered. And say, “Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.” (Surah 17: Ayah 81)

SEE

• Understand Islamic rites and supplications beforehand. • For Islamic queries, head to dedicated booths in the Haram. You will find scholars who speak different languages, a phone service that offers answers, in addition to a library on the upper floor of the mosque. • To complete your umrah manasek (rituals), you will find barbers located close to the mosque’s vicinity, for cutting your hair or shaving your head. Most of them are located in the basement of the Royal Clock Tower building.

• Get to know pre oil-boom Saudi at the Saggaf Palace.

HISTORIC KSA

SAUDI POSTAL HISTORY From camels and caravans to express delivery.

RIYADH

Late 19th Century •

Before the introduction of postage stamps and the railway, the limited amounts of mail that was sent traveled mainly by camel.

In Riyadh, shop owners volunteered to complete mail services by gathering at Safa Square, putting sacks of cloth labeled by city or village.

The senders would then put their letters in the respective sacks, which would be sent along with caravans or travelers going to that particular city.

Early 20th Century •

1926 •

1926 •

1934 •

The Hijaz in the early 20th century had developed postage stamps, postal services and operations on a small scale; they even sent mail internationally.

Recognizing the importance of postal services, King Abdul Aziz set up the Posts, Telegraphs and Telephones (PTT) Directorate in 1926.

In the same year, King Abdul Aziz issued stamps, featuring the King’s tugra, the ruler’s signature and emblem.

After the country’s unification, the first stamps marking Saudi Arabia were issued in 1934.

1952 •

1970's •

2000's •

2016 •

Later on in 1952, the postal activities were moved to the Ministry of Communications.

Post-1969, Saudi Post witnessed many developments, most importantly, an independent budget being announced for Saudi postal services.

Many more postal services were introduced, such as EMS and Naqel, which expanded their operations substantially.

Today, Saudi Post has a postal network that covers all locations of The Kingdom, with over 475 main branches and 180 post offices.
