FROM THE EDITOR

When Fashion Takes Over With the region taking a large leap into the fashion world in recent years and with the rising stars of many Saudi designers on board, we have gone from keeping up with the latest trends to creating them. For this year’s fashion issue, we decided to dive into the local fashion scene, discovering hidden talents that are thriving towards recognition. Thanks to these stars the future of Saudi fashion is brimming with possibilities. In our special feature Next In Line we get intimate with the new and upcoming luminaries in Saudi’s flourishing fashion industry. Fashion is in an expression of self. The choices we make on the outside don’t define who we are, but they do reflect it, and so do our living spaces. Like our wardrobe, our living space accommodates to our moods and the trends in the industry. Working with colors and finding the right furniture to match can be overwhelming, and for that reason our article Trendy, Not Tacky gives you the best advise on not overdoing a style. We’re quickly slipping out of summer into breezier days of fall. Cool weather and happy hearts can only be paired with a tantalizing hot dessert. It’s always a good time to indulge, and our article Life of Pie will guide you to some of the best pies in the city. For those of our readers who enjoy cooler treats, we have Unique Cold Indulgences, a look at the wackiest cold desserts in Jeddah.

BUSINESS

FOR THE SEASON

Saving a bit here and there can make a huge difference. By Amr Banaja, SEDCO

16 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

1.The Goal: Why Am I Saving? Think of it this way: What are you not able to achieve because you haven't set a goal? What fun or opportunities are you prevented from pursuing because of the lack of a savings plan?

2. Forget About Daily Visits to Coffee Shops

We just love stopping by Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts and the like. Plan your week and try to limit your visits to once a week if not once every two weeks. Brew your own coffee at home.

SAVING TIPS

3. Get Your Own Food

It’s fun to go grab a quick lunch from restaurants with friends, but it’s not so much fun for your pocket. Homemade food is healthier and better on your wallet.

4. Sign Up For a Reduced Internet Plan

Get yourself an Internet plan that won’t burn your pocket at the end of the month, use Wi-Fi and try using free calling services more often.

5. Shop For Necessities ONLY

If you don’t need shoes now, don’t get any! Shops have a sale every once in a while; wait until then and get whatever you want at a lower price. Don’t get peer pressured and follow the hype.

6. Stay Away From Your Friend’s Lifestyle

Just because your friends are always going out for sushi or shopping doesn’t mean you have to do the same. You can join them without spending much money.

7. Consider a Part Time Job

This will not only ensure you have some money saved on the side but it will also provide you with some valuable experience in the work life.

8. Look For Bargains

Whenever a new phone comes out, the older version gets a major price cut. Apple fans, the iPhone 7 is coming out soon, why not look at the iPhone 6s?

9. Use Your Credit Card Sparingly

It's easy to spend with plastic and much harder to pay later. Use credit responsibly or you’ll be paying later.

10. You Don’t Need a Car

Car maintenance and gas bills on the rise? Try carpooling with a friend. Enjoy the company of friends during the journey.

BUSINESS

Did you always want to be involved in the fashion industry?

My first experience was as my mother’s (a tailor by trade) sewing assistant during my teenage years in France, assisting her every day after class until the economic crisis forced her to close in 2009. But, fate has a funny way of working things out and now she’s my sewing assistant. I owe my success to her for everything she taught me and for giving me this passion for fashion. When I was 14, I was actually able to make my own wardrobe. Schoolmates would compliment me and ask where I bought my dresses. That’s when I knew I needed to become a fashion designer.

Passion for Fashion Sakina Shbib brings her French and Saudi influence to the fashion world.

18 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

I’m French by birth and Saudi by marriage. What I like about French culture is the minimalistic elegance; there is something so natural about being beautiful in Paris. Meanwhile, what I admire about the Saudi culture is the sophistication of women and their sense of luxury. My style is the mixture of these two concepts and my goal is to highlight the beauty of women according to their own traditions.

COURTESY PHOTO

How have your cultural backgrounds affected your work?

Tell us about your current collections.

My second collection is a presentation of designs with pure lines, volumes and delicate details handcrafted on high-quality fabrics such as Dentelle de Calais, silk organza, silk satin, silk crepe and silk taffetas. The epitome of luxury is to embellish a fabric.

What is the most important element in clothing design?

The shape and structure are fundamental; they bring harmony to your body. Beauty comes in all shapes, but knowing the right proportions is essential to designing a beautiful gown.

I’m a hopeless romantic, so for my second Haute Couture collection I dove into the world of French writer Marcel Proust, portraying women in a state of seduction and living the first experiments of infatuation, just like his characters in “A l’Ombre des Jeunes Filles en Fleurs.” In this collection, flowers are omnipresent and allegorical: they stand for the fragility and delicacy of all young women in love.

What are you working on for the future? I plan on designing luxury abayas in November. I’m also negotiating with stores in New York to be my official distributor in the United States and I would really like to open a showroom in Jeddah by the end of 2017 as well.

I’m working on my third Haute Couture collection that I will present in January during the next Paris Fashion Week.

MY

What is your design process like?

The most demanding part of designing a couture collection is synchronizing all the processes of production: from the sketching and studio research to the draping and pattern-making, including the sewing, hand-made details, finishing and fittings, all within three months of completion. Private clients entail a mood board with sketches creating a “toile.” Often, one dress takes up to two months. For ready-to-wear, I compromise between the design and details in order to make it more affordable while still keeping the same quality.

20 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

It’s still manufactured in my Parisian atelier, but the quick production enables me to reach more customers.

What advice do you have for entrepreneurs and fashion designers?

I believe talent is fundamental for building a strong name, but having a sense of business is equally significant. Success comes when you find this balance between hard work, determination, passion, creativity and networking. It wasn’t school but rather my work experiences at Alexandre Vauthier, Givenchy and Chanel ateliers that gave me the basics on networking and building a strong team.

Your inspiration?

Inspiration is everywhere and timeless elegance is at the heart of my aesthetics, aiming for beauty rather than trend.

Your personal favorite fashion designers?

I have tremendous respect for the work of Yves Saint Laurent. His purpose was perfection and genuine couturier creating exquisite standards of beauty. I also admire the talented designer Elie Saab. His work has produced great inspiration by shedding light on designers from the Middle East. Web: SakinaParis.com (Haute Couture) / SKSParis.com (luxury ready-to-wear) sakinaparis

STYLING FOR HIM AND HER Couples, get inspired!

ARTIST LOOK

This laid-back artsy look is complete with the signature denim overalls we see artists rock while they paint in their studios, so we thought the paint splattered shirts made the perfect pair.

Overalls aren't just for kids anymore. Adults can wear them and actually look good in them. Make sure they're a perfect fit, and leave one buckle hanging for an effortless look.

40 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

Light colors are very simple and they're perfect for summer. Match your outfit with darker shades to add a hint of color.

BEACH LOOK

This look is inspired by an overlooked part of our lifestyle here in Jeddah: a city by the beach. We got inspired by the sandy hues and complemented it with whites.

MINIMAL LOOK Going minimal is unmistakably elegant and instantly adds mystery to your style. Kick up the contrast by accessorizing with statement pieces.

Black and white are always trending. They're the go-to colors to style together as a couple. Keep it sharp, avoid prints, and go for clean cuts.

SPORTY LOOK

Making the sporty look street-style chic is our favorite trend and works in almost all settings. We especially love the long socks - they really help pull the look together almost every time.

Long socks are currently trending but it's hard to style them with just any look. Keep the whole look sporty, go for basic colors and let the focus be on the long socks. Photographer: Sultan Al Saud

NEXT SEASON’S MUST-HAVES The items I am dreaming of and will be wearing soon. By Felwa Alhudaithy

A SINGLE EARRING

VETEMENTS X MANOLO BLAHNIK’S ‘DESTROYED’ HEELS

Faux jewelry is this season's go-to style. Either you go with the more the merrier, the bigger the better. Or you opt for less, literally. Put on a pair of earrings. Then take one off. Go on. Now you’re chic! I love Loewe’s thick hoop and will probably buy one ASAP. Maybe miss match it with another Loewe earring, in another model naturally.

LEOPARD PRINT

For the SS17 collection Vetement’s Demna Gvasalia reworked Manolo Blahnik’s staple Hangisi model. His interpretation downplays the luxury; substituting it with a deconstructed shape with frayed uneven edges. Gvasalia made over Manolo Blahnik’s signature style into a novel cool one.

44 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

While gravitating towards a minimalistic approach might be easy, I tend to fall for a full on leopard look so easily. There is something liberating about this print. Many of us love it regardless of our own fashion preferences, be it Celine or Roberto Cavalli. A Leopard coat could make the most boring outfit.

rom otes f Take n ns of the o style ic Leopard dd a , t s a p robe. r ward to you

You can wear it with your little black dress, with highheels or with white Converse sneakers. This eccentric print is classic and goes with almost everything.

VELVET EVERYTHING Pants, shoes, or a tailored jacket, velvet is one of the biggest trends this season. We’ve all fallen for Celine’s yellow pleated shimmering velvet trousers we saw on the FW 2016 campaign. It was no coincidence that even Miu Miu’s ballerinas are available in velvet too.

FISHNET SOCKS We’ve seen this trend all through spring on street style stars; however no one did it better than Pernille Teisbaek. I wore the fishnets socks with my open-toed Gucci sandals all summer long, with dresses and jeans. It’s not supposed to be classic, it’s just one more trend on the footnote of fashion and one to have plenty of fun with right now.

Would yo u wear fishnet s ocks?

J.W ANDERSON NECKBAND For the sake of transparency this is a men's collection piece. Jonathan Anderson used it first in a menswear show for his own brand J.W. Anderson. I love the idea itself, but also the functionality of this, seemingly, simple piece. At its core, it’s really just a zip-up turtleneck collar. But in reality, it’s a unique piece, capable of transforming just about any look into something new and, more so, unexpectedly fresh. I plan to wear mine with a white t-shirt and hair in a high ponytail.

FASHION HACKS: TRIED & TESTED If something goes wrong, you can always fix it. By Lama Ghazzawi

We gave a few hacks a try, and here’s what happened.

STICKY JEANS Have you ever taken a seat on a bench somewhere and gotten yourself in a sticky situation? Well, it happens to the best of us. This hack claims that rubbing ice on gum will get it right off without any residue. Verdict: This hack works!

46 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

CLEAR COAT TO THE RESCUE Feeling that your glasses are a little loose? Well, clear nail polish works like excellent glue to keep things tight. Verdict: This one may not work for all kinds of glasses, but it’s a little something extra just in case.

ZIPPER GONE HAYWIRE Sometimes, zippers have minds of their own. A cool thing to do is use a key ring to keep it up! Put the circular ring through the zipper and drag it up and over the button. Verdict: Totally useful.

SHAVING CREAM FOR YOUR MAKEUP For this hack, all you need to do is rub some shaving cream onto a makeup stain. Verdict: This one didn’t work very well. (Unfortunately)

IRONED COLLAR This hack can be used for almost any item of clothing with a collar. All you’ll need is a flat iron, which will give you more control over the way you’d like the collar to stay. Verdict: Blessing indeed.

What do you think are the most prominent differences between the makeup scene in the east and in the west? I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting Saudi Arabia before, but from what I have seen from social media we both have a very diverse, active 48 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

A lot of American women are into the no-makeup look for summer, and editorially we’ve also seen a shift similar, celebrating less perfection, slightly smudged and messy. It’s a refreshing counterbalance to the very stylized makeup we’ve seen over the last year.

What are your thoughts on the evident rise of makeup tutorials on YouTube? Do you think that lowers the need for makeup artists?

I don’t think it lowers the need for makeup artists. In fact I think it has opened up the world of makeup artistry to more women who might have been previously intimidated to try new looks, techniques or brands. As a Sephora PRO we want to be a part of helping women connect with beauty in a way that is meaningful to them, which is why we leverage Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Sephora.com to share and celebrate beauty.

in and out, you don’t want to change an entire interior without knowing whether it would suit you or not. With colors especially, start with splashes of it, for example a cushion or a throw. The trend right now is veering towards greys, pastels and minimalist design. Luckily, that is very difficult to get wrong. However, because this particular pallet is very light, the recommendation is to start from a blank canvas and stay away from mixing in too many dark colors.

TRENDY, NOT TACKY

Top tips to getting this right:

Keeping up with the chic trends. The English dictionary defines the word trend as a fashion or a general direction in which something is heading. With regards to interiors, the general rule for a trend to completely turn over takes anywhere between three and five years. This is because it is a lot more expensive and time consuming to retransform an interior, in comparison to buying the trendiest outfit. 54 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

The main difference between a fashion trend and an interior trend is that trends in interior design develop. For example, if a color was to become trendy one year you will find shades of it dominating the scene and more variations of the color in textures and combinations. To avoid taking a trend and turning it into a tacky affair, the best advice is to not overdo it. Because they fade

stay away from bright white; keep the whites warm to avoid the hospital look. Choose one color as a base and work with its shades before adding in other pastels. This is mainly to avoid an ice cream shop interior. With minimalism, don’t fixate on less is more; consider minimalist shapes, patterns and textures as opposed to having a naked interior.

FUNNY FACE

THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS

(1957)

A romantic comedy musical that takes a (certainly glamorized) inside look into the world of fashion. Designer Hupert Givenchy’s custom made gowns for Audrey Hepburn take center stage in this film, where she said, “His are the only clothes in which I am myself.”

CLUELESS (1995)

With the ‘90s making a huge comeback these past few years, it would be good idea to take some styling cues from the queen of plaid herself, Cher Horowitz.

58 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

(2001)

A Wes Anderson classic, this quirky and whimsical movie is both hilarious and visually delightful. Margot’s outfits of tennis dresses and fur coats reflect contradicts her unhinged edgy demeanor have made her one of the most inspirational characters in film.

MARIEANTOINETTE (2006)

A truly visual feast! Set in 18th century, this Sofia Coppola film follows the story of France’s ill-fated queen, MarieAntoinette, whose style continues to inspire the fashion world till this day.

ROMAN HOLIDAY

THE GREAT GATSBY

(1953)

Another Audrey Hepburn classic, a tale of a princess in disguise who goes on adventures with a handsome journalist around Rome.

REAR WINDOW (1954)

We had to include a Grace Kelly film on the list. The costume design showcases the epitome of sophisticated elegance of the ‘50s. While describing his vision to costume designer Editch Head, director Alred Hitchcock insisted that Grace Kelly’s character “was to look like a piece of Dresden china, nearly untouchable.”

(2013)

Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of the American classic “The Great Gatsby” could be best described as visual excess, and same applies for the costumes. While it is set in the 1920s, Luhrmann’s brief to costume designer Catherine Martin was that it “has to be totally the ‘20s, but you have to find an unexpected fresh way of seeing it.” And that’s exactly how the costumes turned out!

COCO BEFORE CHANEL (2009)

A French film depicting Coco Chanel’s early days, before she went on to build the greatest fashion house in the world. Accurately portrayed by the feminine yet tomboyish Audrey Tatou dressed in Coco Chanel’s signature androgynous style that she was always known for.

Is there something you wish had happened differently?

I feel like the podcast reflected one aspect of my life inaccurately; it didn’t really portray my parents as being very supportive. But, they have always encouraged me to pursue an education and career in science.

She recorded her story and America responded. For two years Majd carried a recorder. Into it she spoke about being at the crossroads of education, karate and marriage. Radio Diaries launched her story into the world.

How did your collaboration with Radio Diaries begin?

I participated in a teenage stories competition on Cowbird; the winner would get to collaborate with Radio Diaries. I participated to share my story, winning was not on my mind. I received an email from Sarah Kramer, a producer at Radio Diaries. After a phone call and prolonged discussions with my parents, I said yes.

How did recording help you personally?

I found talking to the recorder a lot like writing. Recording for two years got me to leave my comfort zone and made me talk to people I wouldn’t normally talk to.

What kind of response did you get from international audiences?

They either loved the story or hated it. Some thought I am oppressed and felt sorry for me. I liked it most when they said they were seeing things in a new light.

How has your life progressed ever since the wedding?

I got a blue belt in karate and I started an MSc in Genetics and Genomics in the United States. My husband is a constant source of support and encouragement. I’m happy and excited about the future.

Do you feel podcasts can make a difference?

I firmly believe that podcasts, if done correctly, are a great way of communicating foreign cultures in an honest manner. A manner that, at the risk of being cliché, makes us see the similarities and embrace the differences. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 61

Nadine Linjawi

Bringing Life to Robotic By Sumaiyya Naseem

Nadine Linjawi occasionally hides away in a quiet corner to record songs and create melodies using Garage Band on her Mac. Real life conversations, people and emotions are her inspiration, and she loves the color yellow.

How did you get into composing and recording music? I was inspired by my high school teacher to try Slam Poetry. I had friends who played instruments and so I tried to combine their music with my words. But it turns out words are the secondary thing for me; my focus is on the instruments.

What was the concept behind your last project? The Garden was inspired by heartbreak. I have a problem where I get fixated on a person, even the way they blink or move their fingers, and I turn this into music.

This album was about a friend whose conversations were like traveling to other cultures. So I used instruments from various cultures and included unexpected rhythms to represent her personality. A personal touch was snippets of sounds from the streets and of random conversations.

What do these real life sounds represent to you? I’m essentially an electronic artist and this category is usually considered distant from the human touch. The snippets of people talking help me bring life to robotic.

Do you ever link architecture and music? There’s a system in everything. I feel my study of architecture adds to it because as architects we don’t miss out on any layers. If you break down my songs you’ll find a specific structure, just like any building or structure.

Any artists that inspire you? Chet Faker and Bonobo; they make music that is so touching without even a single word.

The hidden talent who translates words into music.

Can you tell us about your current project? Nadine thinks the instrument Glockenspiel captures Destination Jeddah’s vibe.

The upcoming album, People, is a collection of tracks inspired by different individuals. I look at the person’s own perception of themselves, I interview them and translate our conversation into music. I’m staying completely away from vocals because I want to capture pure emotion using instruments. I’m working hard to develop my music skills in a way that I get to avoid words completely.

How do you achieve translating words into music? When I look at someone I can already imagine a certain instrument based on the way they talk and their voice – is it high tempo, is their voice sad or slow or uplifting, it all depends. It’s a literal translation.

Which are your favorite tracks? This Is Not Where Our Story Is. It reminds me of the beauty of how you may lose someone physically, but they’re always with you.

Artsy hobbies?

I’m currently working on trying to translate architecture into clothes. I’m collaborating with a friend who is a graphic glitch artist. fu_lana

Life of Pie

Our hunt for pies in the city. By Sumaiyya Naseem

Mugg & Bean 9/10

Pecan Pie Cake The side of ice cream completed the sweetness and variation in texture.

Crust: Buttered

and flaky. Filling: Chunky and hot, with the right amount of nuts. Texture: Balanced by the crunchy crust and smooth nutty filling. Location: King Abdulaziz Service Rd.

Johnny Rockets Helen’s Bakery 6.5/10

Apple and Cinnamon Pie Heating did not improve the experience. We’re told the pecan pie is better.

Crust: Hard but

lacked flavor. Filling: A bit too chunky. Texture: Needs improvement.

Apple Pie The pie was surprisingly horrible, it lacked a good crust and looked like pan leftovers. Stick to the burgers!

Crust: Broken up and soggy.

Filling: Fruit slices

were too big and sweet. Texture: Quite disruptive.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Decodes Mammograms For a more precise and accurate breast cancer risk assessment.

Breast cancer screening is almost for free in KSA, however few women actually take the test. Around 73 percent of the cases are detected in an advanced stage, which minimizes their chances to be cured. The University of Washington published a survey in 2015 under the consensus and funding of the Saudi Ministry of Health and its Institutional

Review Board (IRB). According to the survey, 92 percent of the total 10,735 participants reported never having a mammogram. The MOH and other key players in the Saudi healthcare sector have to consider more aggressive means to inform women about the importance of mammography and the latest technologies in expediting breast cancer detection.

DEVLOPING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Once ready, plans include making the AI system available to Houston Methodist partner hospitals in Saudi Arabia. HMH is a longstanding partner of a number of leading Saudi healthcare service providers such as King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center and King Fahad Medical City.

Dr. Stephen T. Wong, Chair of the Department of Systems Medicine and Bioengineering at Houston Methodist Research Institute, said that the software intelligently reviews millions of records in a short amount of time, enabling us to determine breast cancer risk efficiently. It is currently under development and evaluation at Houston Methodist but the team expects it to be ready in about a year.

THE FUTURE WITH AI

The AI has the potential to reduce unnecessary biopsies, save physician time, minimize patient discomfort, and provide more precise subtyping of breast cancer for the selection of optimal treatment options. Such an AI system will strengthen women’s trust in early detection possibilities. Web: houstonmethodist.org/global

The AI intuitively translates patient charts into diagnostic information 30 times faster and with 99 percent accuracy. The team used the AI software to evaluate 500 patient mammograms and pathology reports. The software scanned patient charts, collected diagnostic features and correlated mammogram findings with breast cancer subtype. Clinicians used the results to accurately predict each patient’s probability of breast cancer diagnosis. ADVERTORIAL DESTINATIONKSA.COM 79

ACTERIAL UDDIES

A healthy stomach is a healthy person. By Dr. Rehan Al Taji

FERMENTED FOODS ARE THE RICHEST SOURCE OF NATURAL PROBIOTICS. THESE INCLUDE:

More than 2,000 years ago, Hippocrates said, “All disease begins in the gut.” It’s a piece of wisdom that remains true to this day. Our immune system was the first to come up with the idea of using bacteria to boost our defenses. These bacteria, also known as probiotics (which means "for life”), hold the key, not just for healthy digestion but also for a strong immune system, mental health and so much more. "Many people with health issues, such as thyroid imbalances, chronic fatigue, joint pain, psoriasis, autism, and many other conditions do not realize that these illnesses originate in the gut,” said Dr. Josh Axe in his guide about probiotics. The highest concentration of this good bacteria is found in our gut and is referred to as intestinal flora. Your digestive system alone colonizes about 100 trillion bacteria of different species, 10 times more bacteria than all your body cells. 80 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

Our gastrointestinal tract hosts both good and bad bacteria, with a sweet-spot balance of about 85 percent beneficial and 15 percent harmful bacteria. Falling out of balance will lead to all kinds of illnesses and negative effects on the body, but simply by consuming probiotic-rich foods and supplements, you can bring things back into balance.

Raw Cheeses (unpasteurized)

Sour Pickles

Sourdough Bread You can also get probiotic supplements, in the forms of capsules, tablets, powders and liquids.

Keep any eye out for two things: - High CFU counts, anywhere between 15 and 100 billion. - Strain diversity of about 10 to 30 different strains.

FALSE FADS Diet trends you really should stop believing.

Trend #1 Detox diets to cleanse and lose weight.

Whether it’s a juice cleanse, a temporary vegan reset or taking certain supplements, there is little evidence that supports the claim that detoxes actually remove any toxins from the body. Our bodies naturally cleanse themselves through the liver,

82 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

feces, urine and sweat. In terms of weight loss, there is no sound evidence to back up the claim that detox diets support weight loss. Although some people may lose weight in the short term while on a detox, whether due to severe calorie restriction or simply eliminating certain unhealthy foods, it is often regained when you start eating normally again.

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 83

KEEP THIS IN MIND

Trend #2 Eliminating certain foods for weight loss.

Gluten, dairy, meat and carbohydrates are just a few of the items that some suggest need to be eliminated from the diet in order to lose weight. The truth is, if there isn’t a medical reason – such as celiac disease or lactose intolerance – to cut out a nutrient or food group, doing so is unnecessary and can actually be unhealthy.

It's more likely that weight loss is due to behavioral changes rather than elimination. For example, if you cut out gluten from your diet you will presumably be consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables, which are naturally lower in calories than most glutencontaining foods.

Trend #4 Everyone needs a cheat day.

There is a large social component to eating and when we get together with family or friends, food is usually a part of it. Allowing oneself the chance to enjoy a nice meal with loved ones is perfectly fine, but understanding the concept of a cheat day is just as important. A cheat day is meant to allow you some of the (unhealthy) foods that you love so that you don’t feel deprived.

Trend #3 Foods labeled as “health foods” are always better for you.

A food that is labeled as healthy, organic, natural or even purchased at a health food store does not automatically make it healthy. It is important

84 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

to always read your labels and ingredient lists, no matter where you shop. A food product can be labeled as organic or natural and still contain large amounts of sugar, fat and other unhealthy ingredients.

Some people find this very effective while others may not. If done incorrectly, a weekly cheat day can actually reverse your progress made throughout the week. Instead, try having a “cheat meal” so that it doesn’t turn into a whole day of eating in excess and result in weight gain.

FITNESS MYTHBUSTERS Fitness habits you’ve been doing wrong. By Seyma Saricimen

With the constant interruptions of summer and Ramadan out of the way we can finally get back to our fitness goals and clean

up the mess we made to our bodies. Instead of the usual fitness tips that you're bound to read everywhere, I thought it'd be good to

86 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

dispel any negative or flat out wrong information we might have stored in our minds. Let's have a fresh start for our minds and our bodies!

Cleanses don’t help lose weight

Fat does not turn into muscle Fat and muscle are entirely different tissues, so you can’t convert one into the other. Although muscle can’t physically turn into fat, it can wither.

Fresh juices and drinks aren’t a good idea One of the worst forms of nutrition is liquid. Store-bought drinks and coffee are packed with heaps of sugar and little to no nutritional value; stay away! Even health fads like juicing spike up your insulin levels and don’t do much good.

Crunches are not the best way to a six pack

Carbs aren’t the devil Your body’s main source of energy during an intense workout is glycogen which comes from carbohydrates. What’s bad are simple, processed carbs that provide no nutritional value.

You know what burns fat? Eating less and working out more. You might lose a couple of grams from a cleanse but that is usually water weight that is quickly gained back. The body is quite capable at cleansing itself without outside help.

Lifting weights does NOT make you bulky Ladies, your body doesn’t make enough testosterone to build muscle mass the way men do and even men have a hard time. Size comes from a high calorie consumption, which is why bodybuilders have to eat A LOT.

Getting a six pack is more a result of eating a clean diet and reducing body fat than any ab exercise you do.

Scales aren’t an ideal measuring tool Scales don’t consider how much of your weight is lean mass and how much is actual fat, or what kind of fat there is. A person might weigh little and still be carrying unhealthy fat around their organs compared to someone fit and strong weighing much more.

Light and diet foods

Light weights don’t tone

You can’t target areas for fat burn

Foods that are labeled low-fat, light or diet are foods that are processed and useless for the body. They’re also higher in sugar content which spikes insulin levels and causes instant fat storage.

Toning isn’t a thing; you either build muscle or you don’t. Using light weights doesn’t help you get ripped quicker. Eating clean and getting lean does though, regardless of your weights.

Full-body strength training and cardio workouts will help burn the excess fat from places you want gone eventually. Working out will burn overall body fat, but you can’t control where it comes from.

SPIRITUALITY

Modesty

The Character of Islam Why is it so important?

Here are some benefits of Hayaa 1. A person is honorable if he has hayaa, as one who tries to be a good human and good Muslim will surely be honored.

“Every way of life has an innate character. The character of Islam is Modesty (hayaa).” (Abu Dawood) Hayaa in Islam can be defined as modesty, shyness or bashfulness in our character, as in the way we talk, walk, dress and every other aspect of life. Hayaa encompasses self-respect, upright character, humility, decorum, scruple and therefore it is integral that a Muslim acquires it. 88 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

Modesty should be deep rooted in our hearts, and apparent in the way we dress and act. Hayaa is a very clear indication of our faith.“Iman consists of more than 60 branches (parts). And Haya is a part of Iman.” (Bukhari)

A person with hayaa tries not to go against rules and Islamic teachings as he will have to face embarrassment in front of Allah.

2. Our Prophet (PBUH) said: "Hayaa does not bring anything except good." (Bukhari) 3. The Prophet (PBUH) said, "Hayaa comes from Iman; Iman leads to Paradise. Obscenity comes from antipathy; and antipathy leads to the fire." (Bukhari)

Glimpses

OF MADINA’S PAST History found in a historic structure. By Mohammed Mirza

It would be more apt to call the museum Madina Museum rather than the vernacular that has given it the name Hijaz Railway Museum after the train station it is housed in. Mind you, you won’t be finding any significant locomotives or other steam engine parts here. Though, there is a stretch of the historic track, a train shed

96 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

and whatever is left of the locomotive engines on the rear, they remain cordoned off for tourists. The focus in the museum is on the history of Madina in general. The museum covers the history of Madina from once being a small oasis town to becoming the capital of an Islamic empire that was spread

over continents. Constructed by the Ottoman Sultan, Abdul Hamid II, in around 1908 AD, the century-old structure still holds strong and is very well maintained. The railway station contributed to Madina’s development, but was soon put out of service after a couple of years when the first world war broke out.

PHOTO/ TANVIR AKHTAR

Facade of the museum.

It was thrown open to the public in 2006 after being shut for almost 90 years. For the residents of Madina, the railway station is known as Istasyun. This was the last station on the Hijaz Railway line that ran from Damascus.

I remember first seeing the structure when I visited Madina years ago when our bus parked in front of it. Our hotel was near the station. I remember it being beautifully lit at night; I thought it was a government office building back then. Fast forwarding years ahead, the museum was in front me and Turkish pilgrims were all around it marveling at the structure their forbearers, the Ottomans, built. Inside, a wide hall housing very few artifacts greets visitors, at the center of which is a downsized model of the station itself. We were lead to a small room connecting the hall that housed traditional clothing of the women of the city; most of them were dresses meant to be worn at weddings. A darkly lit wooden stairway that has a beautifully crafted Turkish window leads to the upper floor.

Traditional Bridalwear

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 97

There we saw what could be considered one of the most remarkable things on display in the museum; a bow that is believed to have belonged to a companion of the Prophet (PBUH), Saad Ibn Abi Waqqas (RA) himself.

The upper floor has a long corridor adjoined by multiple rooms, the kinds you see in hotels. The room probably once functioned as offices for the railways during its heydays. Today, each room is dedicated to a specific piece of history. A room housing arms and ammunition was probably one of the biggest attractions on the floor that had numerous rifles, swords and shields covered in glass cases. Nearby was a room that had minted coins and currency notes from the era of King Abdulaziz. The history of Saudi Arabia, right from the first house of Al Saud is brought to light in a room that has long framed posters on its walls. There is also a room that has old photos of Madina; the rapid modernization of Madina is evident from these photos that were taken less than a century before.

Once we passed the corridor we reached a hall, though smaller than the one on the ground floor that had old hand written copies of the Quran. There were also gold and silver coins dating back to the Umayyad era right next to them.

Rifles

We then came upon a room on the ground floor that had naturally occurring rare stones that are found in the region including the pink quartz and the agate stone on display. Adjacent to it was the pre-Islamic hall that had ancient pre-Islamic artifacts housed within it.

Pink quartz, flint stone and a stone from the gold mines near Madinah.

A visit to this museum is a must. The tour groups have long been taking visitors to the Qiblatain Mosque and the site of the seven mosques; this museum needs to be added in the itinerary. It sits within walking distances from the Prophet’s Mosque. Turkish tour groups have already started taking their pilgrims to this museum, it’s probably time for other religious tour groups to follow suit. Plus, the entry is free.

Ottoman era artifacts.

The most intriguing thing about them were the ancient inscriptions that seem to the untrained eye to be non-related to the Semitic languages at all. There were also ceramic dishes and incense burners from the same time period that had exquisite motifs painted on them. There is another railway station in the country from the Hijaz Railway line that is open to the public. This one is at Madain Saleh, some 350 kilometers to the north of Madinah.

The souvenir shop is the first of its kind in the Kingdom. Its location complements the experience of the historical district. Tourists, who are already in awe of the old houses like the Salloum Residence, can get keepsakes from the souvenir shop to remind them of the history and culture that they were moved by in Al Balad. Many tourists come to the shop just to know more about the history of the region. Mansour Al Zamil grew up fascinated 100 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

Al Zamil worked with artists Ehsan Burhan and Mawahib Osman to sketch images that would be recreated into models and figurines. The models will take you back to moments in the past where little girls danced together, the milkman carried his goods and cooks made basboosa.

STAFF PHOTO/YASMIN OUF

The Souvenir Shop waits in the heart of Al Balad’s historical district. It’s a dainty store situated in a cozy corner, right next to a workshop that belongs to a man older than the country itself. Nearby are the timeworn yet dignified houses of old Hijaz. The proud souvenir shop reflects their quaint history with its modern relics and figurines.

Beautiful models of Hijazi doors and windows show off Hijazi architecture. Most of these are replicas of real life structures in the historic district, like Bayt Naseef. Mob: +966-531657556 albaladsouvenir

Caravans to Makkah For centuries Hajj pilgrims arrived through one of these three main caravans.

By Mohammed Mirza

Egypt

The pilgrims in the main caravan came from Anatolia, Central Asia and the Levant. They gathered in Damascus from where they’d set off for pilgrimage, a journey that took them roughly 30 to 35 days. Pilgrims coming from North Africa gathered in Egypt for the second caravan that took a coastal route to the Holy Cities; the journey took about 35 to 40 days.

102 DESTINATION JEDDAH OCTOBER 2016

Pilgrims coming from Persia and Khorasan would gather in Baghdad and form the third major caravan. They would crisscross the deserts of the peninsula to reach the Holy Cities. Pilgrims coming from East Asian countries would normally choose the sea route. They would arrive at the ports of Jeddah or Yanbu from where they continued their journey towards Makkah.

The caravan route was lined with a network of forts and guarded wells, particularly the route from Damascus as it was this route that saw the most number of travelers.

The caravans coming to Makkah were highly organized and stocked with food and goods. In fact, an armed guard led by a commander known as Amir Al Hajj protected the caravans. Armed guards were necessary to prevent raids from Bedouin tribes. The Amir Al Hajj would pay a tribute called Sarr to the tribal leaders whose territory the caravan passed through. Some termed the caravans to be like moving cities, which apart from an armed guard and an Amir, had a judge, saddler, chef, secretary, inspector of weight and provisions and two notaries amongst others. The norm for the caravans would be to march in the night in order to avoid the heat of the Arabian sun during the day. Each caravan was grouped according to the point of origin and would maintain the same positions in the line of march. The opening of the Hijaz Railway in the beginning of the 20th century marked the end of the celebrated caravans, as it facilitated pilgrim journeys coming from far and wide.
