with Sultan Batterjee Letting purpose (of your idea) be your main driver. Inhabiting a disparate business philosophy, Sultan Batterjee, founder of Lifestyle Developers, connects our increasingly globalized world with national progress. Conveying an idea like no other in the Kingdom, Lifestyle aims to deliver to the Saudi society an innovative method of living, one that could possibly introduce a revolutionary change in the local market. Looking to establish progressive ideologies within the local minds, Lifestyle Developers extends beyond providing modern homes, rather reforming the standards of living by adhering to their four core elements: design, quality, affordability, and community.
“We developed a project able to initiate dialogue between the product and consumer. Lifestyle Developers speaks to people now. It allows people to access a lifestyle for instant gratification, and not one of promising future visions. Lifestyle Developers achieves to communicate with standards not attainable anywhere else 20 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2017 ADVERTORIAL

Addressing the absence of relatable or reachable products created a sense of responsibility and respect towards mankind, as Batterjee explains:
purpose is entrenched in the company’s values and culture, further extending it out to its own employees, the market, and ultimately, society.
Batterjee is lobbying for cultural awareness through selling a product that is designed to implement change in the lives of those who invest in it while also challenging the market’s standards.
because the market does not aim for the same enlightening objectives we are hoping to reach.”
Lifestyle truly believe in carrying businesses with a higher purpose, rather suggesting it as the key of success to a prosperous business. Batterjee advocates for establishing a strong commonality between the organization, its employees, and consumers by this purpose, stating: “A business that has a purpose tends to succeed. If a business intends for purely accumulating profits, it might succeed in the short term but will die in the long term. My advice for entrepreneurs
Further explaining the power behind the nation’s 70 percent youth, Batterjee stresses the importance of embodying policies and infrastructures that maintain and attract the youth’s requirements for living- not simply surviving. Adding that the possibility of losing young talent can take the country backwards: “We realized, in order for Lifestyle Developers to capture this segment, we must create an emotional bonding and belonging. Therefore, we had to break the barriers between tradition and reform in order to retain the youth, retain the knowledge, and retain the talent as these individuals could be easily lost to a place that offers what they’re searching for.” As the objective is to raise the standards of living, this
is to build a business with a purpose, a purpose you believe in and relate to. Having a purpose connects you to your organization and with the people you’re working with, establishing identified values and a culture one could belong to. It will make people journey with you until that purpose is turned into a reality.” Web: lifestyledevelopers.com

WHO’S WHO
THE FIRST
Our exclusive interview with Sahara Net CEO and partner, Haitham Bu Aisha. By Arwa Al Mousa
Tell us how Sahara Net began.
With that, I decided to leave university altogether and focus on the business. In 1989, we established one of the first Saudi Arabian bulletin board systems (BBS), which is basically a server that users connect to and exchange messages. In 1998, we were among the first four companies to get licensed by the government to provide internet services and were the first to actually start operating in the Kingdom.
22 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2017
We worked hard and developed fully as a company in 1994 when we officially registered our sahara. com domain. We were the first internet service provider (ISP) to offer internet services to the public in the country.
STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD
I was a senior student of IT at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) when my colleague Kais Al Essa and I decided to start Sahara Net in 1988.
Did you have a lot of support during your journey? My partner Kais and my father were endless wells of support, as were my friends. In 2004, due to the state of the market at that time, we faced serious financial trouble and competitors like Saudi Oger Ltd., SBG, Mobily and STC were lining up against us. We had a lot of debt and the company was about to go bankrupt. And that’s when my friends did the most amazing thing: they partnered with us and provided the financial support that saved us and kept us going.
Did you ever think about getting financial help from banks? I am a firm believer in selffinancing. I learned this from Najeeb Al Zamil, back when he was my office neighbor in the late ‘80s. He had this huge library and I would visit him every day to read books. He advised me never to seek bank loans and, thanks to that advice,we stand strong today because we relied on ourselves and our community.
How do you feel about families that oppose entrepreneurship and instead encourage their children to look for stable jobs? Actually, I strongly advise people to gain practical job experience before deciding to
run their own business. This was something I learned the hard way. I quit school at a young age and employed people who were older, with advanced degrees and had a lot more experience than myself. But, I had no chance to have the observational learning one experiences from being an employee. I always had to be the boss and only learned things through trial and error and with less support than I would’ve liked.
Tell us about the services you provide. Our largest and primary service continues to be internet hosting. Recently we branched off two companies: Sahara Consultancy (Sahara CC) and Tamkeen Networks. The first focuses on integrated technology (such as augmented reality) to deliver interactive solutions for education, businesses, brands and agencies. The second
is specialized in industrial products, technology sales and retail merchandising. We are currently working on branching off a third company that will focus on one of our other major areas, information security services, to be launched late 2017.
What’s next for Sahara Net? We are working to take the company public and offer stocks on the market. We’re also looking to invest in startups and are keeping an eye out for creative entrepreneurs to partner with.
Any last message for our readers? I want to see more startups and innovative ideas coming from our young Saudis. I believe in you and want you to realize that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. Don’t waste any time: strive to take what you have and make it better. Web: sahara.com

REALLY TRYING We present to you Destination’s guide to job satisfaction. By Areeb Al Shathri
24 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2017
Applying for a job is a daunting prospect. If you’re a newcomer to the process, it’s very easy for you to feel frustrated or rejected. Don’t. Nine times out of 10 you don’t get a response, but all you really need is the one. So don’t take rejections personally. You never know, maybe being turned down for a particular job frees you up for the one around the corner.
THE BEFORE Your CV is more than just your first impression; it is everything. Make sure your
CV is, as the Queen would say, flawless. Here are some pitfalls most people fall into that might damage your prospects.
PROOFREAD YOUR CV. You have no idea how much spelling and grammatical
STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMMED DEGHAISHM
WITHOUT
mistakes affect how the employer sees you. Double and triple check your CV to avoid giving the impression that you are careless. Do not embellish, especially when it comes to previous positions you’ve held. Most employers see right through it. You also run the risk of being called out on it when they contact your previous employers to confirm. Most CVs are at most a few pages long; if you can’t make sure its infallible, how can an employer trust you with an entire report.
CUSTOMIZE YOUR CV. One-size-fits-all should not apply to your CV. Tailor your CV for each job you’re applying to. Avoid including irrelevant skills such as singing and dancing. This gives the employer the impression that this position is the only one you’re after.
Salem Ali
We can’t believe this still needs to be said. Make sure your email address is professional. Sousou55 or prettyeyes91 doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
THE DURING Now that you’ve landed a job, where do you go from here?
First off, get to know your company, your boss and your colleagues. If your job is hyper professional, don’t show up in jeans and t-shirt or vice-versa. Do not just meet expectations; surpass them. A good piece of advice from the publishing world is to always “under promise and over deliver.” Remember, the bare minimum is not the way to impress, especially if you want to keep your job or advance further.
DESTINATIONKSA.COM 25
THE AFTER So what if you’re not sure you want to keep the job you have? This is where a lot of
people reach a roadblock: How do I know if this is the right job? There are some signs that are universal to a certain degree. We’ll let them out for you in the stylings of Jeff Foxworthy.
MAYBE IT’S TIME TO QUIT YOUR JOB IF
• Your job does not let you explore your full potential.
• You’re uncomfortable
• Your duties have increased but your pay hasn’t.
• You’re not passionate about the work you do.
• Your job is your main source of stress, and it’s spilling over to your personal life.
voicing your opinion or ideas.
• You dread going to work every morning. • You’re constantly checking the clock. • You don’t like your boss/ coworkers or they make you feel uncomfortable. • You cannot be honest with the people around you.
26 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2017
• You do not agree with the company’s vision or goal. If the above mostly doesn’t apply to you, congratulations! You have found a place you’re comfortable in. Welcome to the ranks of the happily employed people. There aren’t that many of us, so please try to stay
amongst us longer. Keep up the good work, and don’t mess this up! However, if most of these apply to you, then it’s probably time to make a move. Keep in mind that if you do decide to quit you must maintain professionalism until the very end. If you have given in your notice, don’t slack. Show up for work until the last day and keep delivering your best effort in everything you do. There’s nothing worse than burning a bridge while you’re still in the process of crossing it.

Driving Women to Work
With Kasper Cab Eihab Nassier has a solution and it works.
“I call myself a proud Saudi feminist, ” says Eihab Nassier, the CEO of Kasper Cab, a transportation startup that caters to the needs of working females. He met his technological partner, Tariq Al Turkestani, at the KAUST incubator program. Today, Kasper Cab is ready as a feasible option for any woman who wants to commute to work without worries.

Most private taxi companies don’t think about affordability for their clients. Women are forced to pay 30-35 percent of their incomes on transportation. — Eihab Nassier
According to a survey conducted by the Kasper Cab team, over 50 percent women indicated that they declined a job offer due to transportation issues. This was surprising for the duo because men don’t have to worry about these costs. Another survey, this time by King Khalid Foundation, reveals that 32 percent of the employment turnover rate is owed to the transportation issue. “It's hard to be in women’s shoes,” he adds. The concept behind Kasper Cab is based on ridesharing. After an intense period of research, Nassier came up with a plan that would allow women to pay not more than 10 percent of their income on transportation. The company targets women with the salary of SR 6,000 or less. Kasper
Cab’s pilot period revealed that it reduced transport costs by 40 percent or more, and it could benefit more than just women. The economy can be elevated and high unemployment rate can be lowered if more women make it to the office. Nassier and Al Turkestani addressed the privacy matter as well. Kasper Cab’s customer data will be reserved for the client’s purpose only. Unlike most agencies, they don’t intent on using it for advertisement purposes. Nassier remarks, “I think this
is a national issue. This is why we believe in taking the bull by the horns.” Kasper Cab has the potential to provide a solution that suits women’s situation rather than leeching money from them. Nassier and Al Turkestani’s plans for Kasper Cab include expanding to other cities and launching franchises. There is a big market for women’s transportation, something most taxi agencies capitalize on, but Kasper Cab is not in it for the money. Web: kasper-cab.com kaspercab

She noticed that the courts would often rule in favor of the man, but she couldn’t do anything about it because she wasn’t in the courtroom. Prior to 2013, female law graduates could only work as legal consultants because they couldn’t be licensed. They would prepare for the cases, sort out the arguments and finalize the entire process, then hand it over to a male lawyer
for the court proceedings. Al Zahran vowed to make a difference, so she and four other female lawyers fought and pressured the Saudi judicial system to allow women to be certified. The judicial system eventually caved in to those pressures and in November 2013 Al Zahran became the first female lawyer to appear in a Saudi courtroom. Shortly after, she started an allfemale law firm that focuses on women and their rights. “I ask God that I shall serve my religion and my beloved country.”

Resolution: Redecorate Your Space
Stick to your New Year’s resolutions by redecorating your house a little. Many people inspire to make similar New Year’s resolutions, ones that are often repeated: to lose weight, to be more productive, attempt more kindness and gratitude towards others, to incorporate more acts towards the community and simply be more aware. Believe it or not, redecorating your space can help you stick to these resolutions.
Don’t clutter your kitchen with jars and boxes. You will feel the need to fill them, and unless you fill them with cucumbers and kale, they are serving you no purpose.
62 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2017
WEIGHT LOSS With regards to losing weight, the interior algorithm is simple. The key is to disperse. Keep things far away from each other so you have to move to get them. Create a space in a room you use the most to do simple tasks such as jump rope, jumping jacks and crunches. I am not a fan of treadmills in the living room. They take up too much space and can drastically change the look and feel of the room.
Make a point of having separate areas for working and relaxing to avoid vibe confusion. All elements of both spaces, including paintings, scents and flowers, need to be different.
PRODUCTIVE WORKSPACE Now that you’ve created a more active space, reorganize to create a more inspiring, productive workspace. A comfortable desk and chair are important, along with a painting that inspires you. Place a single scented candle on your desk as the flame will

Thyroid Cancer Thyroid (n): the butterflyshaped gland that controls metabolism. By Sumaiyya Naseem
Despite how common thyroid problems are, there are many misconceptions about the gland and its cancer. For example, contrary to popular belief, hyperthyroidism (thyroid deficiency) is not caused by obesity or weight gain. Dr. Mazin Merdad, an Otolaryngologist (ENT) and head and neck surgeon, who returned to Saudi one year ago, answers some common questions about thyroid problems.

How common is thyroid cancer in Saudi Arabia? Unfortunately, we do not have a national cancer database here in Saudi Arabia. King Faisal Specialist Hospital collects information from its patients and the Ministry of Health, and their latest data shows that thyroid cancer is the second most common cancer among Saudi females.
How do local rates compare to global rates? We do not have a lot of studies regarding thyroid diseases in Jeddah, and therefore we don’t know if our local rates are higher or lower compared to global ones. The general consensus is that there is nothing in our lifestyle that is directly associated with thyroid problems.
What are the symptoms of thyroid cancer? Thyroid cancer often presents as a mass felt in the lower neck. However, some small
Thyroid Gland
thyroid cancers are incidentally found when a patient has an ultrasound or a CT scan of the neck for a different reason.
How many people have lumps in their thyroid gland? What percentage of that is cancer? Around 30 percent of people have thyroid nodule, and the majority of them are small and benign (not cancerous). Less than 10 percent of thyroid nodules turn out to be cancerous. These are international statistics.
What causes thyroid cancer? The vast majority of thyroid cancers develop in patients with no known risk factors. Having a family member with thyroid cancer, or being exposed to high-dose neck radiation can slightly increase ones risk of having thyroid cancer. If any of these cases apply to you, don't panic, just get checked regularly.
Thyroid (Back View)
What are some precautions against thyroid cancer? Nothing in ones lifestyle will increase or decrease the risk of developing thyroid cancer. Screening programs (mainly by doing neck ultrasound imaging) has been shown to be ineffective, because, again, more than 90 percent of thyroid nodules are benign.
Are there institutes or hospitals that specialize in thyroid cancer? My personal advice for patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer is to find a surgeon who specializes in or has significant experience in neck surgery. Studies have repeatedly shown that the risk of complications is less when specialized surgeons perform the surgery. DJ Recommends If you suffer from thyroid problems, get proper support and take care diligently. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 83

GET MORE RIZQ-Y n e tha r o m is Rizq oney. just m ahra By Z

Rizq (provision/sustenance) is not just confined to money in our bank account, status, business or food. It is far more extensive. The provisions of Allah may be in having tranquility, guidance, a smile on your face, your parents’ love, your spouse’s support, your child’s obedience, good friends who are always there for you, having respect of people around you and anything that gives you comfort and uplifts your spirits. Everything that we have is rizq from our Creator, as He says in the Quran: “Verily, Allah is the AllProvider.” [Quran, 51:58] Here are the ways mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah where Allah promises us an increase in rizq. 84 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2017
1 BEING MINDFUL OF ALLAH AND TRUSTING HIM “And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.” [Al Talaaq 65:2-3]
2 GRATITUDE And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.” (Quran, 14:7)
3 SEEKING FORGIVENESS And said, “Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers. And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.” (Quran, 71:12)
5 MAINTAINING THE TIES OF KINSHIP “Whoever would like his rizq (provision) to be increased and his life to be extended, should uphold the ties of kinship.” (Bukhari 2067 and Muslim 2557)
“His rizq (provision) to be increased” means to be expanded and made abundant or, it was said, to be blessed (barakah). An Nawawi
6 MAKING DU’A Du’a is a very important way to expand ones provision as the Prophet of Allah (PBUH) has told us that nothing can change the Divine decree except du’a. (Narrated by Ahmad, 5/677)
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to say after Fajr prayer: “O Allah, I ask you for good (halal) provision, beneficial knowledge and accepted good deeds.” (Ibn Majah 925)
4 INCREASING IN CHARITY Spending on charity does not decrease wealth and only blesses it. “Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned.”(Quran, 2:245)

The Maldivian Indigenous treatment consisting of a localized blend of products, relived muscle tension and provided utmost nourishment.

My favorite was the heated fresh coconut sticks that instantly melted once rubbed on the skin, breathing new life into my body.
Awarded the Best Luxury Scenic Setting, Mandhoo Spa Restaurant is elegantly designed, yet instilled with a spooky aspect of sting rays and baby sharks possibly swimming underneath the restaurant. Lunch at the world renowned Mandhoo Spa restaurant was specially prepared to energize, nourish, detoxify, relax and fortify the body using explicitly organic produce. Next was an awe-inspiring cruise over the deep blue ocean on board a luxury cruiser. We watched the sun sinking into the oceanic mélange of colors, while being served the chef’s special canapes. DAY 4 Having recognized and awarded multiple global awards, Ithaa Undersea Restaurant is the world’s first undersea restaurant offering a 180-degree panoramic view of the coral lush surrounding it. Ithaa rests five meters below the surface of the Indian ocean. We wrapped up our trip with dinner at the beautiful Koko Grill, located on the quiet zone beach for a luxuriating final dinner. Koko Grill provided us with an intimate dining experience. The chef put together a 10 course meal of Japanese cuisine under the stars, by the sound of rhythmic waves. It was perfect. The Village
That Hangs Off a Cliff Living on the edge in Habalah.
Baboons resting under a peculiar looking stone.
By Mohammed Mirza
There are many stories about why the village was built in such a dangerous location; the last place one would expect to find habitation. The widely held opinion is that the location was used so as to hide from the invading armies of the Ottomans. 96 DESTINATION JEDDAH JANUARY 2017
STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMMED MIRZA
Fog brushes the walls of the ghost town giving it an even spookier look. Visitors who reach the edge of the cliff up top are unable to see the village that exists on the cliffface right below them. That is how concealed it is, and that has helped the village remain a mystery for a long time.
Sitting at around 40 kilometers from Abha, we drove through the majestic mountains of Asir, passing through some of the best landscape the country has to offer. The climate was pleasant, as it usually is in Abha, where you can roll down the windows and enjoy crisp mountain air. We passed some amazing historic dwellings, but because they are found so frequently in and out of Abha, we eventually stopped being fascinated by them. When we reached the edge of the cliff face, its steep vertical drop left us perplexed. There were other mountains rising from the mountainous landscape around it adding to the beauty of the sight. I looked down from the farthest point that the barriers on the precipice allowed me and from there I saw a few houses of the ghost town.
A house in Habalah.
The inhabitants of the village lived in the area until the ‘70s, but then moved to a much safer location above on flat ground. A tourist resort is built near the parking lot from where one can go on a cable car ride to Habalah, which as of now is the only means to access the isolated abode. The cable car plunges 300 meters downwards to get to the base of the village. The irony is that even in the past the only way to reach the village was a rope. Hence the name Habalah, derived from
the Arabic word for rope, habal. For the village, the rope was the sole tie to the outside world. The tourist resort has decent options when it comes to food and has a few rides including a ferris wheel that gives an even better view of the area. The ride on the cable car is not long and the village itself is pretty small with only around a dozen houses in the entire village.

Historic farmlands on the way to Habalah.
The houses are not that spectacular, most carrying a plain façade. The noteworthy thing however is the intricate doors on the houses. The village itself was inhabited about 300 years ago and was to a large extent self-sufficient with fruit, vegetable and livestock, all 98

raised on terraced plots of land. Whatever else they needed was then hauled by ropes and pulleys on large iron buckets from the edge of the cliff. Though the farms have long gone, one can still see the terraced lands and pockets
When visiting Habalah, bear in mind it is not a secluded village that remains untouched by time. It’s definitely not a place where you’d expect to walk through and feel like you are traversing through an openair museum - there are other villages in Asir for that. But the main draw to Habalah is the scenic view and its unique location. It’s a place bound to be intriguing for foreign tourists as well.

THE PORTUGUESE CONNECTION The Portuguese rule over the Arabian Gulf. By Mohammed Mirza
Just like much of the world after the European Renaissance, Arabia has been subject to European colonialism as well. Parts of what is modern day Saudi Arabia once fell into the ambitious hands of colonial powers. The Portuguese sought to influence a major portion of maritime trade in the region and profit from the pearling industry. After the Portuguese invaded the Arabian Gulf, Hurmoz in Iran served as their base.
1506 AD • The Portuguese first appear in the Gulf and invade Hurmoz in Iran.
1521 AD •
1549 AD •
Conquered Qatif, Bahrain and some islands belonging to the Jabrid Dynasty.
Ottomans defeated the Portuguese in Yemen and Oman.
1625 AD •
Present Day •
The Portuguese entirely lost their last bastion in Hurmoz, Iran.
Aside from the Portuguese built fort in Tarout Island, little remains of the Portuguese era.

Exploring the Mag’ad Ancient documents and vintage items, need we say more? By Sumaiyya Naseem
We took a lengthy walk around Al Balad historic district discovering its lanes saturated with history and tradition. Some spice sellers and perfume vendors in Al Balad have been selling their wares for generations. Situated next to Bait Naseef is The Jeddah Our Days of Bliss Mag’ad, a space that has been curated to provide visitors with a deeper look into history. The mag’ad in Hijazi homes was the meeting point for men, while women stayed in the majlis upstairs. Visitors can lounge on traditional-style sofas and enjoy tea and gahwa, essentials in Hijazi tradition. An original calendar with the portrait of King Farooq, the last king of Egypt, and King Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia sits in its frame, reminding us of the royal stories of the past.
The walls of the mag’ad are adorned with original documents about Jeddah, including newspapers, magazine articles and postcards - all curated from around the world by Mansour Al Zamil. Another frame that stands out is a wide panoramic picture of Jeddah in 1880. It’s
a visual few have seen, pieced
together using several pictures from the era. Upstairs is a haven of vintage items like traditional weighing scales and knife sharpener, a jewelry trunk, cameras and men’s shaving tools. There are old Saudi Arabian currencies and a crate of unopened soda bottles. A window overlooks the busy Balad courtyard that is shadowed by the Bait Naseef tree. I know I can spend a while watching the scenes unfold; Balad’s history lives on.
