FROM THE EDITOR

We meet again dear readers… February is the month that truly lets us ease into the New Year. Talks of resolutions subside and people relax a little more. But we haven’t given up our goal to bring you the best stories from our beloved city. This issue is packed with stories that will inspire you to be your best creative self. The special feature was crafted to provide an in-depth look at the local art scene and guide you in the ABC’s of becoming an artist. This is our little treat to all aspiring and established artists. To pack an extra punch of inspiration, we interviewed the esteemed Safeya Binzagr, an artist who revolutionized women’s presence in local art and whose artistic efforts preserve our local heritage and history. This month we are adding a bit of adrenaline to our pages with our one on one with Mohammed Al Saud, the man internationally representing Saudi on the racetracks. Escape is sometimes necessary in life, and this is why we create art. Travel is another favorite escape route, so we’re bringing stories from China and a forest in Jeddah that truly stunned us. Our fun-filled pages await you.

My inspiration is history and in Jeddah, it’s Al Balad. With the beauty and the details, there’s something in Al Balad that we cannot see in the modern city of Jeddah. I try to understand why it has this character and what we’ve lost. I actually have an old window frame in my studio from my grandfather’s old house in Al Balad.

From the roundabouts to the Red Sea, Jeddah is full of inspiration. Some artists reveal what scenes motivate them most in the city.

Seeing the sunrise and watching it change throughout the day in Jeddah is my inspiration. I’m so attached to the sun that most of my paintings have a sun in them. I love the warmth, the light, the and yellow color.

After you’ve perfected your skills and found your creative inspiration, you may start to build a collection of your work that you would want to share. Showcasing can enable you to put your personal pieces on sale, while also establishing your name in the local art community. Applying for a gallery show or exhibition can be intimidating, but Musaed Al Hulis, founder of Tasami Creative Lab Gallery says it’s not as difficult as you may think. He offers tips to beginner artists looking to get the attention of a gallery.

1. Before looking for a solo show, contact galleries about upcoming group exhibitions. It’s a good way to get your start and get some attention.

Remember, galleries aren’t only here to help artists, artists help galleries too. Present your work confidently, don’t be shy and be an advocate for yourself and your artwork. 24 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY2017

Having been born in Jeddah, Safeya Binzagr felt a longing for the Jeddah that once was. Spending her youth in Egypt, Binzagr returned to her home country only to be welcomed by an overwhelming sensation of nostalgia.

behind her well defined historical depictions of old Jeddah, the notable artist replies: “A painting is an easy read, often conveying historical accounts and factual information. It is instant and tells you a story by a visionary understanding. Each of my paintings are rich with information and knowledge one can only retrieve from a legitimized and ratified source, and that is why much research was required for my collection. Each piece is legitimate in context and content, granting its audience a history lesson, a chapter in the book of their ancestors accessible by visionary imagery. Binzagr is an artist, however she transcends the status by also committing to a social and cultural responsibility beyond simply offering her people art. Having asked the influence of Saudi culture on her works, Binzagr explains, “Considering the restrictive traveling nature of that time, upon my return, I was faced with a social, cultural, and communitarian responsibility, only established after my first showing. However, prior to that, I used to draw but not with the intention of preserving or documenting my fading culture. I simply loved the culture, the homes, the people. My concern for preserving tradition and culture only aspired my works once I received the supportive response and reaction from the audience. Placing a heavy emphasis on the significance and importance of her spectators’ reactions, Binzagr says: “Their yearning for a deeper understanding of their history planted in me a passion for providing these accounts of legitimized documentation, which to my advantage required me to become a researcher of my own history and culture. As I delved deeper into research, I delved deeper into a passionate journey of documenting and preserving my Saudi heritage for the many years to come. Why do you art? Communicating what I see and feel about the world around me has always been a challenge. I want to be able to communicate through creating. To bring an idea into focus and give it life so it serves a purpose by just existing in the world.

Is your work the result of sudden inspiration, or long term planning? How do you think up your concepts? Waiting for inspiration is like starving yourself. I do geometric patterns as a form of daily meditation and the origami just kicks in when I am thinking of other stuff. However, some projects are planned ahead. Sometimes inspiration just finds you when you are working and having fun while at it.

What is, in your opinion, the best thing you’ve ever created and why? Once I made this Rest in Peace piece, where I had these journals that I had filled out over the course of a year. Writings included my daily reflections and personal thoughts from times that were difficult and the only thing I could do was to keep writing. I took the pages of those

journals and folded them into origami peace doves that were then arranged in the form of a whirlwind. It symbolized coming to peace with my thoughts and the past. I gave them all away. People would come and pluck a piece and take the ones they thought were most relatable to them. It was comforting to see how much people related to the piece and I wasn’t alone.

What do you think of the art scene in Saudi? Anything you’d like to see changed? I would definitely love more public activities where you bring communities together to form one art concept or piece. There’s art education awareness on the rise now and I think nurturing visual thinking within the school systems would help.

WHO ARE YOUR ROLE MODELS? Ai Weiwei, Chinese contemporary artist and activist, and Neil Gaiman, English author.

Hopeful in Washington DC

LIBRARY CARD

“The Hopefuls” is set in America’s political backstage. By Sumaiyya Naseem

If you’ve ever moved to a city and felt unhappy, you’ll probably relate to Beth, the Editor in transition who hates everything about Washington DC after she moves there with her husband Matt. Beth’s hatred begins with its carpeted Metro and extends to the 34 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2017

ambitious ID-wearing and obnoxious people around her. Matt, an ex-staffer in the Obama campaign, is a hopeful too; his ambition is to run for office one day. The tension in the story stems from Matt’s inability to compete with the successes of Jimmy Dillon, the charming friend he looks up to. Beth soon becomes fast-friends with Ashleigh, Jimmy’s wife, at a party where worth of white house staffers is measured in security clearance levels. Over a period of four years, amidst the highs and lows of political success, friendships thrive and falter and cities are hated and loved.

“The Hopefuls” navigates the tedium behind political campaigns, the travels and relentless requests for cash and the marriages that strain under the pressure of politics. From questions of what it takes to become a politician to what ends friendships; Jennifer Close presents a compelling story with an intimate take on politics. “The Hopefuls” is the human side of the political backstage that we miss out on.

I started by exploring what it would mean if someone’s spouse wanted to run for office. — Jennifer Close

STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMED FAWZY

I’m never eager to read fiction set in the world of politics, but I didn't cringe when faced with terms like fracking and oil policies in “The Hopefuls” by Jennifer Close. “The Hopefuls” is a brilliantly funny book, but it stands out most for making Washington DC a character in itself - a character that is often the center of the narrator Beth Kelly’s comical lamentations. Its charm possibly lies in the first person narrative of Beth as a political outsider.

ART IN TV SHOWS WESTWORLD Set in a futuristic wild west amusement park, Westworld is a show about consciousness and people discovering who they truly are. Everyone has a theory about what’s really going on, but one thing undebatable is the killer art style.

STRANGER THINGS A nostalgic homage to the 80s, Stranger Things is a gripping story of the sci-fi genre. Its art style gives millennials today a way to experience the wonders of sci-fi in my favorite decade.

ART IN PODCASTS THE TRUTH

Each episode is a short story where the writing is impeccable, the acting is sublime and the production quality is top notch, pushing the podcasting medium to its creative limits. Try “You’re Not Alone,” “In Good Hands” and “Tape Delay” to see what I’m talking about.

HOMECOMING Another storytelling audio experience, this one boasts a killer cast and truly immersive production, pulling you into this psychological thriller of a tale. I have yet to hear anything quite like this. It’s been almost a year since we lost our most prolifically-creative legend, Prince. Meet the man representing Saudi on the racetracks. By Tala Hussein

What were some difficulties you faced representing your country in the GT3 series? I’m very proud to be representing my country in a racing series like the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East as it is a huge moment and step up for me. I’ve never raced in a professional series like this before. With that being said, one of the biggest challenges for me is learning the tracks as each circuit is completely new to me.

A SPEEDY CONVERSATION WITH MOHAMMED AL SAUD

What is your goal as a Saudi racer? My goal is to grow my racing career to reach the epitome of racing regionally and around the world. Being a part of this year’s Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East, it allows me to benefit from this series’ ability to develop racing talent in thrilling competition.

Who is your favorite childhood race car driver? Maybe someone who inspired you to become one? As a child, I used to always watch Michael Schumacher and admire his driving skills – he would definitely be my all-time favorite driver!

What is your most memorable moment as a driver? My most memorable moment as a race car driver would definitely be when I first entered my car for my first competitive race ever. It was a feeling that I can never forget and put into words – a combination of being nervous, not knowing what to expect along with the strongest rush of adrenaline through my blood.

What is your favorite car model? As a racer and a regular driver? My favorite racing car would be the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. However, as a regular driver, I have to say it’s a McLaren SLR 722.

Where do you see the racing culture going in this region? While the racing culture in the region is improving with a stronger and wider racing community, I do think that we need to create more hype on motorsport and the value behind it. This kind of sport requires support from sponsors and governments for it to become more attractive and open to the talent we have which is something I absolutely advocate for.

What would you tell aspiring racers? To start early and be open to learning as much as possible – never a failure but always a lesson, is the mentality you need. It can be hard and challenging but you always have to push hard to get the results you want. Web: gt3me.com

PERFORMANCE

The cars also offer a full measure of torque from a low 1,700 rpm and a usable speed range of up to 7,500 rpm. This data characterizes the newly introduced vehicles as outstanding free-revving sports car engines.

Their maximum speeds vary from approximately 287 km/h to 305 km/h depending on the model and installed equipment.

A three-liter six-cylinder flat engine with twin-turbo charging and a power output of 272 kW (370 hp) in the 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Targa 4. The 911 Carrera 4S and 911 Targa 4S have a power output of 309 kW (420 hp).

The 911 series can instantly gather speed, expressed and clearly demonstrated in the figures: the 911 Carrera 4 CoupĂŠ with PDK and Sport Chrono Package sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds (-0.4 s) and the S model in 3.8 seconds (-0.3 s), while the Cabriolet and Targa models fall back a short 0.2 seconds.

CHASSIS

The 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Targa 4 once again mark a stark line between sportiness and comfort. A ten millimeter lower ride height allowed adaptive PASM chassis as standard and optional rear axle steering for the 911 Carrera 4S and the 911 Targa 4S. However, the newly introduced automatic post-collision braking system is standard.

Offering numerous applications available to download, the Porsche Communication Management system easily pairs with a smartphone for simplified convenience.

THE NACHOS EXPRESS On board you’ll find the best nachos in town. By Sumaiyya Naseem

I developed a curiosity for nachos a couple of years ago, after it frequently popped up on #foodstagram. Later when I uploaded pictures of my own, I realized it was a popular appetizer even amongst my friends. Once trapped in the trend, I noticed my nachos were either really good or just…terrible. Based on my experiences, I’ve created this list of the best nachos, so you know what to expect when you say, “And a plate of nachos, please.”

Firegrill Nachos, Firegrill

A puree of tangy guacamole worked well with their very crispy nachos chips. I liked the crispiness chopped onions added to the salsa - proof that it was fresh! There was a little something missing, but it’s easy to overlook because it’s so cheap. Rating:

AN ITINERARY FOR YOUR TRIP TO

CHINA

A guide to one of the world’s oldest civilizations.

Visiting China was one of the most exhilarating experiences in my life. From imperial architectural wonders to breathtaking mountains, surreal beaches to glittering metropolitans, there’s a bit of everything bundled in this beautiful country.

The history of Shanghai spans over a thousand years and closely parallels the development of modern China. Originally a small agricultural village, Shanghai developed during the late Qing dynasty (1644–1912) as one of China’s principal trading ports. Known as ‘the Paris of the East,’ Shanghai

is a great blend of old and new. The city’s heart is the Bund, a renowned waterfront boardwalk along the Huangpu River, lined with colonial-era buildings nestled between modern sky scrapers. The Huangpu River divides the city into two parts; Puxi and Pudong. Puxi is the oldest side of the city, its former financial and festive district. Pudong is Shanghai’s modern financial

If you only have time to visit one museum, my top pick is Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center, which shows how far the city has come over the past two decades and the urban plan for the future. Shanghai Museum is also worth visiting to see ancient Chinese artifacts. It has more than 120,000 precious historical relics. Whether you’re into antiques or high-end brands, Shanghai is paradise for the shopaholics. One can lose track of time navigating the labyrinth of malls and markets in search of finding something unique. The antique market is a street full of road side sellers offering traditional Chinese pieces that will compel you to acquire at least one, if not more.

A FOREST in Jeddah Defying the desert. By Mohammed Mirza

80 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2017

Around five years ago I remember visiting the area when it was a dumping ground for the city’s sewage and was called Musk Lake for reasons that I can’t comprehend. I did find it pretty lush though back then, with various types of

desert plants growing around the rim of the lake. Fast-forward to today, and large portions of the forest are fenced, the lake has been filled up and tall coniferous trees have replaced small shrubs

STAFF PHOTO / MOHAMMED MIRZA

EXPLORE KSA

that once grew here. All in all, over 80,000 plants thrive in this man-made forest, which is now called Eastern Forest (Ghaib Sharqiya). When visiting for the first time, I didn’t know what to expect, as there isn’t much evidence of the forest online. The photos that do exist don’t do it justice. After taking the Briman exit from the highway, we proceeded eastwards, going past car scrapyards, farmlands and tents on our journey on the highway that runs from Jeddah – Jummum. The highway even serves

DESTINATIONKSA.COM DESTINATIONKSA.COM 81

as an alternative though longer route to Makkah from Jeddah. It took around 20 minutes from Briman to the forest. The entrance is such that one might expect it to be a gargantuan sized farmhouse of an affluent businessman, with security guards and barricades, making it potentially off-putting for tourists. The signboard of the forest is too small, so you have to reach the security gate before you can read it. The guard lifted the boom barrier, revealing a lush forest like I haven’t ever seen in or around Jeddah before. The trees, however, seemed to have lacked luster almost as if the vibrant green has been dried by the desert sun. The sight of the forest, with many plants I’ve never seen in Saudi Arabia before, made me forget for a moment where 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2017

I was. Some tall, some short, some blooming, some not, it felt like a nature reserve without the animals. Every few meters or so, an opening in the road allowed for parking spaces. Whatever handful of families that were in the forest had parked their cars there and went deep into the forest to set camp. We could hear birds chirp but couldn’t see them.

Colorful butterflies were flying around, passing from one tree to the next. I would have loved to see flowers as well, but hardly any flowery plants have been planted. Perhaps the place achieves a more ‘foresty’ look without them. After passing through empty roads and roaming for miles around the forest, we saw an observatory tower on a plateau.

From the observatory tower, we saw the entire landscape of the forest. We could see various groups of trees planted together, ground cleared at a distance for new plantations and the road snaking its way around the forest. It looks natural, as if a road was paved through a real forest, not as if the trees were planted around the road.

The toughest part of your visit? Trying to convince others that there’s actually a forest in Jeddah – I know I am still struggling to make people believe this.

There are solar powered lights along the winding road, although I’m not sure of the reason, as the forest remains closed in the night. Sticking true to its environment-friendly aspect the forest is irrigated through recycled sewage. The sewage is recycled nearby by the National Water Company. There aren’t many facilities on site, other than a charming little mosque with beautiful gardens and a few toilets at the entrance. Whatever you need for a day in the forest – including water and snacks – must be brought with you, as the nearest baqala is miles away.

Taken as a whole, Jeddah’s Eastern Forest is ideal for a picnic, a non-barbeque one that is. The scenery provides lots of Instagram and Snapchat worthy photos and videos. The whole place spans over an area of 2.7 million square meters. The entire area

isn’t covered in forest, but is it expanding, with many places cordoned off due to construction work. COORDINATES 21.647537, 39.386706 VISITING HOURS: Thursdays and weekends from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., the forest is accessible only for families. Entry is free of charge.

TABUK A HISTORICAL SAGA Of mysteries, chronicles and bygone times. By Mohammed Mirza

Almost 1,000 years after its founding, the town became part of the state of Al Ayaneyean and then flourished. The city is also speculated to be part of the Nabatean Kingdom, which is famous for its construction at Madain Saleh and Petra. However, the town dwelled into obscurity and not much was written about it for the centuries that followed right from the turn of the millennium until Islam dawned in Arabia. The Battle of Tabuk, which is actually a misnomer as no battle actually took place,

JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2017 84 DESTINATION RIYADH

was more of an expedition that managed to display the strength of the Muslim forces to the Byzantine vassals. The expedition was successful for the Muslims and Tabuk again became well-known and was integrated in the growing Muslim Empire. A mosque where Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) prayed during the expedition still exists in Tabuk to this very day.

For the years that followed, many pilgrims passed through the city of Tabuk, which was now seen as a gateway to and from Northern Arabia. The flow of pilgrims intensified with the arrival of the Hijaz Railway and the city became an important stop on the railway line. Many historic structures left behind by the Ottomans mark some of the most visited touristic sites in the city.

PHOTO/ABU FAHAD AL OTAIBI • TOUFIC SALEM

As strange as it may sound, the city of Tabuk was originally called Taboo. At that time, it was a small oasis town with a history dating back to 1500 BC. Many pre-Islamic poets make mention of a famous mountain in Tabuk called Hasmi in their poetry.

INSIDE JADRANIYAH ART GALLERY It has more colors than you can imagine. By Sumaiyya Naseem

An interesting fact revealed by Abeer Abu Sulayman, our guide for Al Balad Avenues, was that many of the paintings are recreations of some of the earliest photographs of Saudi royals and the city of Jeddah itself.

Walk into Jadraniyah Art Gallery and you’ll be surrounded by the distinct smell of oil paintings that cover the entire walls to the roof. Amongst scenes from an older Jeddah are paintings of Kings, a group portrait of the first council of Saudi merchants and a beautifully reminiscent scene of fishermen on a boat, a visual so realistic you can almost hear the busy sound of the harbor.

Location: Al Balad Historic District Mob: +966-566889570 Web: jeddahbliss.com judraniyah

STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMED FAWZY

Contemporary and modern art by Saudi artists has been flourishing locally and around the world for quite a few years now. But, there’s something in the heart of our home that many people are unaware of. Hijazi history is being preserved in Al Balad Historic District by way of art. In a recent initiative to preserve our city’s cultural and political history and earlier lifestyle, international artists joined hands to paint Hijaz like never before. The influence of other cultures on Hijaz is reflected in the social texture the paintings reveal.

A view of the first American Embassy in Saudi is captured in a remarkable painting, the building that still exists today. Another painting shows the wall that was built (and later taken down) over 1,500 years ago when the Portuguese tried to invade Jeddah.A trip to Jadraniyah Art Gallery is mandatory for any art enthusiast in the area. Not only will the paintings inspire your own art, but they will also reveal the immense beauty possible when international artists come together to protect an ethnic heritage that is not their own.
