BECOMING A SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEUR Sohail Bajnaid tells us how the handy device was crafted.

18 DESTINATION JEDDAH AUGUST 2017
To become a successful entrepreneur, you must possess strong business acumen but to become an inventor, you need to be a dreamer – and that’s what Sohail Bajnaid, the brains behind the Pocket Shattaf aka “sacred” device, is.
Bajnaid moved to London at a young age, and being accustomed to toilets equipped with hand bidets, he soon discovered it was a luxury in this part of the world. He couldn’t fathom the idea of it not being a basic necessity. “When I saw other students go through what I went through, I decided to create the Pocket Shattaf and make life easier for them,” he tells us.
Design
It took him almost five years to perfect the design, and a few prototypes along the way. “Apart from the shattaf being easy to use and the right size, I had to make sure my design was unique because there were a lot of shattafs in the market already,” he says.
Trial and error
Bajnaid’s first hand bidet prototype was created using a garden hose sprayer but it was too big to carry around. He needed a small, portable one. Another was made using a plastic container the size of his palm – he cut two holes in the
lid, stuck the pump of a blood pressure meter in one and the head of a hand bidet in the other.
Setting the foundation
Studying business innovation and entrepreneurship management honed Bajnaid’s ability to develop a unique product and ultimately become a businessman. “It [my degree] definitely set the ground for me – I was able to see myself as an entrepreneur,” he shares. “When I see successful entrepreneurs across the globe, it makes me believe that I can be one too.”
No risk, no gain
When asked what advice he wants to give to young people who have an abundance of ideas but lack the confidence to execute them, he says: “Believe in your idea and in yourself. What’s the worst thing that can happen? You’ll find out your idea/ product already exists. But believe me when I say this, it’sworth taking a chance – take the plunge.”
DESTINATIONKSA.COM 19
The final step
“Back in 2013, it could take up to six or eight months, but now it’s become a lot easier – the certificate is issued within two months,” he adds. “In fact, I wanted to modify my design and it only took two days to renew the patent.”
Future plans
The Pocket Shattaf is just the beginning for Bajnaid. “My plan is to develop more products for travelers – I want to make their lives easier.”

ABDULELAH HADIDI Country Human Resources Manager at Ikea
RAWAN KATTOA Who can help me? Where should I look? What’s the first thing I should do? Here are some tips from professionals. Abdulelah Hadidi, Country Human Resources Manager at Ikea, advises you to find out more about yourself before applying. For example, conduct a personality assessment, research the best employers in the market, or define what you are primarily looking for in a job. 22 DESTINATION JEDDAH AUGUST 2017
Rawan Kattoa, Recruitment Manager at Nestlé, suggests discovering what inspires you by asking questions like “What do I really want to do every day?” and “Where do I see myself in 5 to 10 years?” The next step is to double, even triple check your CV. Make sure it is well written. If you have applied to many jobs and received too few calls, go back to your resume and “reflect on what it is that discourages employers from reaching out to you,” recommends Hadidi.
Recruitment Manager at Nestlé
The first impression is everything, according to Elie Haddad, Senior HR Consultant at Outlane. “A well-written and organized CV is the first thing we judge a candidate on. And when sending out emails, which should be written properly and in a professional manner, it is crucial to attach a cover letter.”
According to Afifa Jeelani, Recruitment Consultant at Ideas Bureau, a CV should be “a onepager which clearly states the degree pursued, list of projects and achievements plus other volunteer work and internships done in chronological order.” In addition, Kattoa states that if you have no professional experience, impress your potential employer by mentioning personal goals you have achieved in life.
AFIFA JEELANI

ELIE HADDAD
Senior HR Consultant at Outlane
Haddad says the most effective method to apply for jobs in Saudi Arabia is via professional platforms such as LinkedIn. “Updating your LinkedIn profile regularly is key with a special focus on the achievements section. Generic CVs copy pasted off the net are not attractive.” Hadidi shares another source recruiters use to find candidates are company career pages. Recruiters prefer job applicants who make the effort to apply on their company website, rather than randomly applying to any job that suits their background. The CV becomes less central when you are called for an interview. After verifying the credentials written in the CV, recruiters move forward to evaluate the match between both your attitude and the company culture. Kattoa argues that it’s vital that you become aware of the first impression you build and always come to interviews prepared; for example, have a copy of your CV and write down questions that get answers to your expectations. For junior positions, apart from educational and professional credentials, recruiters focus on potential and behavioral competencies, according to Kattoa. In short, in Hadidi’s words, “be the best version of yourself and show that.” DESTINATIONKSA.COM 23

TAKING THE ‘Cool’ OUT OF BULLYING Bullying has adverse effects on all parties – instigators, victims and audience. By Eiman Masroor
As the new school year approaches, becoming part of the cool kid clique becomes every child’s mission, and the pressure is inevitably increasing. It’s no longer a small problem and it’s one that needs careful attention. Bullying is leading but in a negative and dictatorial way, explains Reem Bakheet, a social and educational consultant who has worked in the education sector for over two decades. It can encompass a number of acts – physical or emotional abuse, name calling, teasing, etc. “A kid ended up changing his name because he was bullied so badly in school – and it wasn’t even a bad name; it was just a strange one,” she tells us. “He was so affected that he could no longer live with it. And it’s not a small step – you’re changing your whole identity.” 24 DESTINATION JEDDAH AUGUST 2017

If they are victims now, they will remain victims for the rest of their lives unless the issue is dealt with in the early stages. We need to give them a lot of self-esteem. We need to make them feel like they are worth it – bullies and victims both. — Reem Bakheet

“The child wasn’t able to defend himself and in turn had very low self-esteem. And he would never speak to the teacher about this because he thought that would only increase the bullying.”
“The problem begins at home. If parents teach the importance of good mannerisms and practice it, children will develop in a stable environment. If they witness abuse and aggressive behavior at home, they will pick up on it,” Bakheet explains how disturbed children turn into bullies.
After a few sessions, Abulfaraj understood the reason why the victim couldn’t stand up for himself – he witnessed his

bullying in the world, shares Bakheet. “It’s because of the way they raise their children and the environment they maintain at home.” Bullying has negative effects on all three parties – bullies, victims and the audience. “Kids who are bullied perform poorly in school, develop low self-esteem, become depressed, higher absenteeism rate, may resort to violent behavior in order to protect themselves and have a higher probability of committing suicide,” shares Rachanee Mallam, quality assurance and education consultant. “Bullies also perform poorly in school, are at a higher rate of dropping out, develop social disorders and may also commit more serious crimes in the future.” Bakheet says the audience can either reinforce the behavior of the bully or put a stop to it. These people grow up to become passive members in social settings. If someone is getting mugged, they may just sit there and do nothing about it, or take a stand. All this behavior can and should be molded in their formative years, otherwise “it becomes a part of their personality and it’s not a habit anymore,” she says. “And if you’re a victim today, you will become an abuser tomorrow.” According to Bakheet, in Saudi Arabia, the focus is on the information in the books. "It should be on developing individuals.” 26 DESTINATION JEDDAH AUGUST 2017

HELPLINE FOR HELP! The Ministry of Education has provided a helpline for students to call and speak to counselors if they face issues in school. “A huge number of the phone calls received were from girls and it reveals two things: girls aren’t able to speak at home, and boys are taught to not express themselves. They are told they are men and they shouldn’t cry or whine and deal with it themselves,” says Bakheet. “This is disturbing.”
According to another study recently conducted in a local university in the Kingdom, “75.1 percent of boys and 42.9 percent of girls are victims of bullying,” Bakheet shares. Studies reveal physical bullying increases in elementary school, peaks in middle school and declines in high school; verbal abuse, on the other hand, remains constant, says Mallam.

“SUPER MOM” GANDEEL Meet the super mom improving quality of life, one room at a time. By Leena Khayat
Standing at the Khorafi Center for kids in Kuwait, Suaad Gandeel stood teary-eyed reflecting on her journey to winning “The Super Mom for Kids with Disabilities” award. After 37 years of strife, Gandeel was recognized for her efforts and her positive impact on Saudi moms. Gandeel is a businesswoman, psychologist, and philanthropist but above all
Gandeel was awarded for her work in Unaiza (Qassim) for leading the conference “Psychological Rehabilitation for Families after the Diagnosis of Disability.” She was set apart from the crowd, because she was a mother with real experience and not a doctor or an outsider.

she is a mother. The ventures she’s endured and paths she’s taken all lead back to Basma, her daughter. Gandeel is a mother to Basma Al Nahdi, 37, and Amr Al Nahdi, 34. Basma suffers from Tuberous sclerosis (TS) a rare multisystem genetic disease that leads to seizures, intellectual disability, behavioral problems, and complications in the organs. With a master’s degree in applied behavioral science, Gandeel never realized how much her education would be implemented in her daily life, at work and with her daughter. In order to ensure a productive and fruitful home environment for Basma, Gandeel created the smart room. She explains, “I have a vision as a mom; instead of telling kids to do something, I want to make their lives more organized for them to be more functional.”
STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMED FAWZY
Gandeel has created smart rooms that are multifunctional for her daughter. Large clocks and calendars adorn the room to assist Basma with her shortterm memory problems. Each
aspect of the room is catered to Basma’s likes, dislikes, and needs. The small potted plant and the karaoke machine all give Basma a role and responsibility within the room. A self-esteem wall decorated with Basma’s trophies and awards is hung in the room to remind her of her achievements and improve her self-esteem.
THEN CAME SUPER NANNY
BLOOD BANK: RAFED
When Gandeel realized the positive influence of the smart room on Basma’s life, she developed Super Nanny in 2012. Super Nanny is an interior design business aimed at improving one’s quality of life. Using all IKEA furniture, Gandeel helps her clients create smart rooms using the “Four Rs” method. The individual’s roles in the room and life, the rules regulated in the room, the rules the person lives by, and rights the person can enjoy. Each aspect of a person’s identity such as gender, faith, career, are elements implemented within the design on the room.
Gandeel co-founded Rafed, a blood bank that caters to orphans and disabled. The need for such a service was realized on one of her darkest days in 2007. Her daughter Basma was admitted to the hospital for internal bleeding, yet another side effect of TS. Desperate and afraid, Gandeel sent a text using her battered up Nokia phone to each of her contacts pleading for blood donors. Gandeel was overwhelmed with the love and support from her friends, orphans she volunteered with, and even her plumber. “I’m one of those people who believes God doesn’t make mistakes and nothing comes on a silver platter,” said Gandeel. She has overcome severe hardships by being separated from her kids for over seven years. Gandeel is a matriarch and warrior, fighting to improve her childrens’ lives and making a difference in society. Mob: +966-504609808 Email: info@supernanny.life Web: supernanny.life

Arguing that we have an overload of information, she seeks new thoughts, beyond the boring masks we wear every day. And in order to compensate for the oxygen she has inhaled all the time she spent thinking,

Emirate director, Shatha Al Ameri, arrived in Saudi Arabia seeking her cast members; it wasn’t long before Al Harbi’s name came up, as she had built a reputation on social media, as someone who had constant depression. And, by coincidence, while she was on
shoot, the heroine had been through episodes of depression, which were caught on tape. "Mamsous" takes us back into the narrators’ initial experiences with their illnesses and the feelings and thoughts they witnessed. Al Harbi describes, for example, she sees the animal version of people and, consequently, becomes intolerant to any human interaction. Instead, she prefers to unify with the place she is in, like a chameleon unites with colors of trees. In our interview, Al Harbi added “the discussion was very honest; it was spontaneous.” Its bravery earned it the best short film award at the Dubai International Film Festival. It is also being used as a classic case study at the Queen’s University Belfast. Remembering those days, she learned “we are all insane.”

her output will be to talk about mental illness and give voice to those who don’t fit in. Al Harbi further elaborates that we have so many examples of people who have succeeded in life. To help those who fall under stigmatized categories, she is willing to be an example of what it means to have failed.

Al Harbi’s novel, which will be published abroad soon, is titled after the degree of electricity that transforms a person from insanity to sanity.
depression, that will be great,” Al Harbi confesses. Then, she continues, she wishes to expose the culture and attitude of addiction.
It “narrates the mind and soul of every person,” beyond geographical boundaries, to come to the conclusion that we are the result of concrete civilization.
Al Harbi wants fighters of mental illness to know they are not alone in the battle, that there are thousands with them who understand their struggle. The daring and brave storyteller hopes her efforts will “shatter beliefs of closure and intimidation.”
At the center of "0.9 Ampere" is a woman completely bored of mankind, leading her to live in isolation. She creates a world of her own, where the objects surrounding her have life. She becomes addicted to her realm, of which she and her parents are in total denial. Al Harbi hopes to vex viewers with the shocking images. Her ambition is that "Mamsous" spreads until ordinary citizens can relate to the subject of mental illness. The end result? "Many positive creations will come from this suffering."

When the heroine is diagnosed with addiction, she undergoes a long journey of treatment; spiritually, mentally and physically. On her path, she has suicidal thoughts, thinking she is giving herself life, because life is death. “If I can lighten, even if just for one hour, a person in

PIANO FOR LIFE The piano set them free, beyond their disabilities. By Nadia Sakkal
At the same time, I wasn’t only a piano teacher. I learned to be also a psychologist. I have to read the minds of my students, their gesture, their movements. — Grace de Silva
Upon arriving in Jeddah in 1990, with her husband and a 5-yearold son in her arm, de Silva quickly found an answer to her question “What can I do here?” 36 DESTINATION JEDDAH AUGUST 2017
With a BSc in Music (and a major in the piano) and experience teaching in the Philippines, she was well equipped to teach the instrument. Residing at a compound, the promising teacher had access to a horizon of audiences. She
took the first opportunity to buy a pre-owned keyboard at a neighbor’s garage sale. “And then it all started.” Ten months later, it was time to showcase her ability as a piano teacher. She organized a concert in the compound and invited everyone. From then

Grace de Silva learned to play the piano at age 4. Piano became the language she passionately spoke.
on, her slots were full. For the past 27 years, de Silva has been teaching the piano day and night. After two decades of solid teaching, her name was known here as the best piano teacher.
This man could not recognize letters or colors. De Silva refused to take no for answer and, with the help of an interpreter, decided to teach him the letters he needed to know, A through G.
Three years ago, the mother of an autistic child contacted her. It was her first experience with a student who couldn’t recognize letters, so she had no idea how to teach him notes. God’s grace gave her wisdom: “Give me colors, pencils and stickers.” She colored all the keys on the expensive piano.
Two months later, he was able to play a few baby songs. His family was ecstatic and loved de Silva for her success. She wrote approximately 15 copybooks of songs in letters so he could play them, from Abba and the Beatles, to classical music.
The boy’s mother informed her that he loved Disney songs. So she intelligently wrote a song after another in colors, rather than notes. For example, he learned to point to “do” when he saw the color red. Today, he enjoyably plays with both hands and will soon take singing lessons. Another story is of a 57-year old man with Down syndrome.
The wonderful piano teacher will soon leave Saudi Arabia, to retire in the Philippines. She will be remembered by all her students, myself included, for the great lessons she has taught us. De Silva has a couple of final messages to share with our readers. First, always remember that practice makes perfect. Whatever skill you are trying to master, remember that your love for it is a therapy of all illnesses. Whether depressed or upset, “go to the piano and it will release you.” Second, the only key to a good piece is patience, a good amount of it. “Struggle in the beginning but of course you have to control your temper. You have to try, no turning back and no giving up.” teacher_grace619

Hala Alyan
Laced with poetic language and poignant instances of life, “Salt Houses” by award-winning Palestinian American novelist and clinical psychologist Hala Alyan does great service to the narrative of displaced families and the notion of belonging. the successive generations of the Yacoub family, ending with Manar, Salma’s great granddaughter who is visiting Jaffa in 2014 to reconnect with her family’s history and heritage. In between the reader becomes intimate with the rest of the Yacoubs and the key moments in their life that define them. What’s notable about “Salt Houses” is Alyan’s portrayal of how even wealthy and prosperous families are deeply affected by war and its disruptive nature. This is not a story of poverty, tents and deprivation. It’s a story that shows that privilege does not discount the turmoil of loss. It’s a story that’s easy to get lost in because the love, loss and hope felt by the characters is all too real. And above all, when you filter out the sociopolitical conditions you’re left with raw human emotions that we all taste in life. Cherishing family above all else is a dominant theme in Alyan’s poetic novel. Because of war and the resulting ripples, the characters are often faced with situations that make them stand back and appreciate the family they have left, while remembering those they lost. Like all great literary stories, this one houses a secret too - a bundle of letters that were never sent. This is a book that will challenge you as a reader and also give you a story to remember.

FATRA BY TASNEEM ESHKI Tasneem Eshki is the first jeweler to design artistic jewelry that can be used for spiritual meditation. “Fatra” is a new concept we saw in her beautiful jewelry from June 7 - 25, at Rubaiyat Department Store. Arabic for “period of time,” Fatra comes with a unique message. We all go through tough circumstances in life; and still, we can make an active choice to be strong and keep our faith in God. As a symbol of this perseverance, Eshki chose to include trees in her design. Trees, she explains, stand
tall in all seasons and give shelter and fruit. Similarly, her collection is a reminder that we can give, without expecting anything in return, no matter what we are going through. The slogan of her brand is “the art of prayer jewelry.” And indeed, these necklaces can be used to pray with, giving them a feeling of spirituality. So you can wear a variety of accessories, but a fatra necklace is the only one you’ll have a connection with from the start. Email: info@tasneemeshki.com Mob: +966-547261919 tasneemeshki

the way for a healthier Saudi Arabia. The two organizations are collaborating on raising health awareness in the Saudi community. They're also working hard to develop the means to address the issues and make Saudi Arabia a healthier place to live in. The MoU actually supports the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan in the region, a plan that calls for growing Unilever’s business while reducing its environmental footprint. It’s also a way to enhance the company’s positive social impact.
APPROACHING HYGIENE One of the approaches under the MoU is to design training materials for a program that targets infectious diseases in public hospitals. The Saudi Ministry of Health also plans on actively endorsing a digital hand hygiene campaign developed by Lifebuoy. They also plan on supporting a large campaign to improve the health and well being of the pilgrims coming to Saudi Arabia’s holy cities. Another great aspect of the partnership is their approach to target residents and the community directly. The Lifebuoy team will be joined by representatives from the Ministry of Health on trips to schools, hospitals and malls where they will deliver the message of health and hygiene to the community.
Isam Badwailan, the brand protection director at Binzagr Unilever Limited and Lifebuoy commented on the significance of the campaign, “Positively impacting the health and well-being of our people in built into our corporate DNA. It is a formal part of the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, and also a key element of the Lifebuoy brand identity. We are delighted to have achieved the support of the Saudi Ministry of Health in taking our campaigns on health and the importance of hand-washing in stemming the spread of diseases, to wider audiences Kingdom-wide.” In 2015, Binzagr Unilever won the King Khalid Award for Sustainability Initiatives, and earlier this year they received the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Excellence Award. 12 MONTHS to a Healthier You Add or remove a habit every month.

TOPIC OF THE MONTH: 10,000 DAILY STEPS TOWARDS HEALTH
68 DESTINATION JEDDAH AUGUST 2017
Taking 10,000 steps a day is a basic requirement for optimal health, like drinking adequate amounts of water each day. In order to stay fit, you still need to exercise in addition to daily walks. I always say walking is not sufficient exercise. To me, it is more of an essential movement. For optimal health and fitness, strive for 10,000 daily steps every day in addition to a regular exercise program
including high intensity training and strength training.
How can I know how many steps I take every day?
In my opinion, one of the best monitors is FitBit, which tracks how many steps are taken each day and you can program it to track your walking/running distance, endurance training, strength training along with calories burnt during all these
Keep this in mind: Since walking isn’t really exercise and you should be doing it every day, you don’t have to worry about being sore or wanting to give your muscles a break to recover. DID YOU KNOW
exercises. Recent research showed that wearing FitBit also helped overweight postmenopausal women increase their daily activity levels by nearly 40 minutes (789 steps) a week.
Is walking 10,000 steps really required? Yes! A recent study found that daily walking for an hour reduced the risk of stroke for men over the age of 60 by
as much as one-third, and it doesn’t matter how brisk the walk was. As far as fitness goes, walking will only help you out if you are starting out extremely out of shape. Therefore, a regular exercise routine is required to stay fit. Walking is an essential maintenance activity that will allow you to be healthy into old age.
According to UK’s National Health Service, the average person only walks between 3,000 to 4,000 steps a day. You don’t have to walk 10,000 steps in one go; break it down as you see fit. If you work in an office environment, make sure to get up and walk around every 15-20 minutes. This will also help you take a break from the awkward office posture and allow better blood flow and a clear mind.
Want to burn more during your walks? Ordinary walking does not qualify as high intensity training, however, there is a way to turn it into one. Try high intensity interval training where you walk for 30 seconds and walk briskly or jog for another 30 seconds.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: The School of Discipline Arena Heroes’ program prepares kids against bullies. By Sumaiyya Naseem
70 DESTINATION JEDDAH AUGUST 2017
Discipline in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu begins with wearing the uniform known as gis. The gis is made using a thick and stiff material as it’s used to manipulate the opponent. In a nutshell, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the art of grappling. Unlike the threatrics of wrestling, it’s a real sport where the ultimate goal is submission.
“The reality of street confrontation is not going to look like a Jackie Chan movie. 90% of the time, the bully will grab you and start throwing punches. But, our kids at the program know what to do when that happens,” he adds. It’s a common misconception that any form of martial arts can teach self-defense. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is unique because it makes kids skilled in the highest level of selfdefense: the avoidance of the fight completely.

“It’s a form of controlled violence; you choose whether or not to hurt the opponent. We don't want kids to learn punching because the moment you decide to punch someone, you take a particularly violence decision,” explains Stefan Zoll, the Brazilan Jiu Jitsu black-belt instructor at Arena Heroes who leads the team.
“Our kids at the program are representing the Saudi youth internationally,” says Zoll. The team at Arena Heroes is constantly preparing for international competitions, especially the World Professional Jiu Jitsu Championship in the Emirates. In April, Arena sent a group of its students to compete in the prestigious World Youth Jiu Jitsu Championship in Abu Dhabi. The students returned home with over 20 medals, all from tough fights against some of the best kids in the world. Through this achievement Arena showed that its kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program is world class. There are many benefits to getting trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, starting with selfdiscipline, respectfulness, improved concentration, courage and confidence. The kids also gain self-esteem because the martial art proves it’s not about the size.
Stefan Zoll, black belt Arena instructor.
The Arena Heroes’ Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program currently has over 300 kids, from the ages of 5 to 16. The martial art requires several years of training before an athlete becomes deserving of the black belt, which can only be granted at age 19. This doesn’t discourage the kids because they’re gaining confidence and strength right from the start. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is quickly becoming a movement in Saudi, and Arena Heroes is at the heart of it.

SUMMER WITH NELLY
Don’t let the heat stop you!
Remember, your body needs to be taken care of year-round; it is a full-time job but one that is very rewarding.
Start with Someone
Start with making sure you have a fitness friend! Not only will this create some accountability, but you’ll also feel like you’re also getting a healthy dose of some social time. The only thing better than one fitness friend is a bunch of fitness friends, so I would also recommend group fitness classes. 72 DESTINATION JEDDAH AUGUST 2017
Try New Things
Use summer to add some flavor to your training regime! Don’t fall into the habit of doing the same types of workouts over and over. Create a fun weekly cocktail of indoor, outdoor, low intensity, high intensity, familiar and new workouts.
Hydrate
If you go outdoors, max out on SUNSCREEN and WATER. I run with an entourage of water bottles, and a bleached face during summer. Better to be safe than sorry!
Day or Night
You can workout in the morning or at night. With the sun out for a longer periods of time, your mind will be more
receptive to either timing. Whichever you choose, creating consistency in your schedule will help you stick to your routine and ultimately achieve your fitness goals.
Stretch
Stretch before and after your workouts. Stretching not only prevents injuries but also helps us to create the long lean muscles that we love oh-somuch. Stretching also helps to metabolize blood sugar and improves the coordination in your limbs.

#CoupleGoals: Amin and Manar Couples who travel together, stay together.
Amin Atiatullah and Manar Al Omayri are the Saudi couple who are trending on our list of #couplegoals. The traveling couple was recently in Turkey where they spent the better part of their Ramadan, and made a whole cache of new memories together. You might know them as aminonara on Instagram where they share updates and moments from their travels. It all started in 2015 with their honeymoon in the United States. “We are also encouraged by the idea that we will never be the same again after seeing the world,” they explained. However, traveling is not just the passion to explore; being socially aware is also a part of it. “For us, traveling is a form of education. We want to build bridges to show people who we really are and to learn more about them. We want to break stereotypes.” In their time together, Atiatullah and Al Omayri have been exploring the western areas of Saudi, from the forests in the North to the coasts along the South. Across the world, they went to the furthest point of Scotland in the hope to witness the Northern Lights. While they failed to witness the phenomenon due to clouding out, Atiatullah and
Al Omayri met wonderful strangers and saw breathtaking scenery. Last year, they spent their Ramadan and Eid in Indonesia, a Muslim country with beautiful traditions that touched their hearts and helped them understand the culture and its uniqueness. The couple don’t have a list of places to strike through. “Sometimes we just open a booking website and look for the cheapest airfare to anywhere. We book the tickets and start our research.” That first step smartly cuts down costs. Traveling the world does seem like a costly venture, but the couple further tackle finances by being minimalists. “We say no to expensive hotels and yes to guest houses and camping. We also prefer local street food over fancy dining.” “We travel twice a year for almost two months each time, and we manage the cost by using budgeting apps.

However, these two think differently. “It really depends on your relationship and whether you’re listening to what your partner wants.” They’ve both been able to venture into new territories because they have each other.

After a long bumpy ride, the driver stopped in the middle of nowhere, dropped our backpacks and told us we’re in Bundung. Google Maps revealed we were two hours away from the city! We had to climb a wall together to get to a bus that dropped us at the wrong location. It was a scary experience but we had each other and we eventually reached our destination safely. We choose to see it as a happy memory because we don’t think we will ever be scared of anything after that night.”

HISTORIC KSA
Built as a watchtower, the structure is largely made of a mixture of mud and straws from palm trees. The mixture is believed to have been left to dry under the sun following which one layer after another was added to complete the tower.
Ash Shanana Tower – The Storyteller History found in places where one least expects them. By Mohammed Mirza
Al Qassim has always been acknowledged for its large volume of date production and the illustrious people that the land has given birth to, but behind the limelight of those two subtly lies the region’s history.
is that it there have been so many battles fought in and around it and it has somehow managed to survive through them all. Most of these battles were between the Saudi State and the allies of the Ottomans.
A prime example of its history is in the form of Ash Shanana tower, which is located just 7 km from the center of the city of Al Rass in Al Qassim’s heartland. Standing at a height of 27 meters, the conical tower has become a mini-tourist landmark.
During one such battle, the tower was under massive artillery fire and it is believed that due to this it has reduced from its original height of 45 meters to the nearly 27 meters that it stands as of today.
Historians have multiple opinions on when the tower was actually built with reports ranging from anywhere in between 1699 AD to 1817 AD. So by even the most conservative of estimates, it is at least 200 years old. But what’s most remarkable about it 84 DESTINATION JEDDAH AUGUST 2017
The last of such battles to take place was in 1904 AD between King Abdulaziz’s forces and his adversaries from central Arabia. Despite all the battles that happened around it, Ash Shanana tower has literally stood the test of time and it stands with stories and tales of a number of battles and wars to tell to curious travelers.
