CREATIVITY AND COURAGE You can tell a lot about a group by the art it creates – from film to oil paintings, music to poetry. The French artist Matisse once said “Creativity takes courage,” and no one understands that type of courage quite like we do. In a time where the arts were not considered an integral aspect of our lives, many have taken it upon themselves to persevere and persist, despite naysayers and limited support or resources. Today, the nation not only has embraced the arts but celebrates it. From ban lifts to entities dedicated to entertainment, a new dawn for the arts is upon us. In this issue, we speak to artists and entertainers in the Kingdom – from all kinds of art and entertainment genres, and we look at the fruits of their artistic pursuits.

SHE CHEERS,
HE CHEERS: Female football fans take Saudi sports stadiums by storm
For the first time ever, on Jan. 11 (a Friday), more than 3,000 women stepped into Pearl Stadium in Jeddah’s King Abdullah Sports City – and history – as they watched in person Al Ahli beat Al Batin 5-0 in the game played in the Red Sea port city. The third league game that women attended pitted Al Ittifaq against Al Faisali at Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Stadium in Dammam.
GOAL! It’s not just a football match, it’s a full entertainment experience! I’m optimistic about sports events here now. — Roaa Al Harbi
Thousands of cheering and flag-waving female football fans took King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh by storm on Jan. 13 to support their favorite team in the professional league game that pitted Al Hilal against Al Ittihad, the first ever Saudi ‘Classico’ game of top teams attended by women in the Kingdom’s history. At the games, scores of women in small and big groups waved the colors of the football teams they support, lifting their arms in the air each time it looked a goal was in progress. The women joined other family members in enthusiastically singing their team anthems intermittently. The air felt charged with the energy of the fans. 12 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2018
A girl gets her face painted with her favorite team’s colors ahead of a historic football game between Al Hilal and Al Ittihad on Jan.13 at Riyadh’s King Fahd International Stadium.
Teams of female ushers guided women and other family members to their seats in special sections of the stadiums. Outside the stadium, there was a festive atmosphere as fans applied face-paint in the colors of their favorite teams, among other activities organized by the General Sports Authority (GSA) and the sports federation headed by Princess Reema Bint Bandar, who was also in attendance in Riyadh. In October of last year, the GSA issued a decision that as of early 2018 the three stadiums, previously male-only facilities, would be prepared and ready for families, including allocation of special places for seating and entrances.

Roaa Al Harbi, a 23-year-old law student, said, “I feel very optimistic about upcoming sports events here now (after attending one). It’s not just a football match, it’s a full entertainment experience!” “A great development has taken place in our country. It’s a historic moment. This is all about an inclusive society,” said Abdulrahman Mohammed, a 30-year-old banker who accompanied three female relatives to the stadium at one of the games. “It feels great. It feels satisfying, fulfilling. It’s my adopted homeland, so this inclusivity and recognition has a huge significance for me. We have come a long way,” said Fatemah Khan, 26, a Pakistani management professional. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 13

With the current startup ecosystem, an entrepreneurship hype was developed. The word entrepreneur became viral and the number of local start-ups emerging is quite astonishing. How will you ensure your business sees it through the

SET YOUR GOALS AND DEVISE A PLAN
SMART NETWORKING
You need to know where you are heading. When and how will you reach your goals. Track your progress and be aware of your environment – what will deviate you from reaching your goals? How will you manage challenges?
Be in the right place at the right time. Make an effort to introduce yourself to the right people, let them know what you can offer. Network with people who will benefit from your offering and also with people who may help your business grow.

KNOW THE FUNDAMENTALS
DO YOUR RESEARCH
What are your key performance indicators? For healthy business growth, you need to know your numbers. When will you break even? What are your customer acquisition costs? Growth rate? Expected revenue? Target market Percentage?
4 Here are some tips to take into consideration:
1 IF YOU ARE EMPLOYED
do not leave your job – yet! Bring your idea to life; once your startup is successfully growing and you can financially support yourself and your business, make the decision.
TIME MANAGEMENT IS CRITICAL TO SUCCESS FROM THE OUTSET
Your offering needs to be launched at the right time, your business operations need to eliminate waste, and you must be able to make decisions fast. Ultimately, opportunities will be lost if this is not mastered. Moreover, your reputation will be impacted once your business is up and running. You need to be a trustworthy entrepreneur and so does your brand.
Make sure there is place for your startup in the market. Validate your value proposition – will the target market truly benefit from your offering? If this cannot be validated, reconsider your idea. Startup is only a phase. Set your goals, meet them, and move to the next level. Despite the hype, it is not an easy journey. Be smart in the decisions you make, believe in yourself, and stand strong through the rough times. Jeddah can offer you so much to support you through the startup phase. Look for accelerators and/ or mentors, and attend online courses and startup events. Most of all, take care of yourself, to be able to take care of your business and enjoy the journey.

Godfather of Board Games
Rami Sunnari may have unlocked a community trend By Sumaiyya Naseem
On a chilly Thursday evening we walk towards Challenge Round on Yamamah Street, a cat watches us. Upon entering we see Rami Sunnari finish up sweeping dust off the floor. He welcomes us in and we settle at a long table, the walls around us are covered with shelves upon shelves of board games and posters of iconic characters like Yoda. We’re instantly drawn to the trendy space that Rami Sunnari has created. And it’s true, board games are trending, and, to a great extent, Jeddah has Sunnari to thank. Like many of his generation, hours of Sunnari’s childhood were spent playing games like chess and Monopoly. But it wasn’t long before video games garnered a mass appeal that overshadowed traditional tabletop games. A few years ago Sunnari, who works as a computer engineer at Saudi Airlines, rediscovered his childhood interest. He dived right into exploring modern board games and built a collection that he played with his friends and family. Soon after the idea behind Challenge Round was realized, Sunnari knew firsthand how nearly impossible it can be to find a variety of board games in the local market; Challenge Round became the solution to that problem. 22 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2018
People around me were really enjoying the games, and it gave me the idea to start a place where people can come together to play board games. I also wanted locals to have more access to them. — Rami Sunnari
Sunnari believes that board games are something every home needs, especially during family gatherings and gettogethers. He considers them to be a nice way to put away the screens and socialize in the moment. The proof is in the response Challenge Round has received, “People love the idea and didn’t know so many board games existed. Once they’re introduced they get hooked. Our entertainment culture needs something like this.” Many of its patrons are young women; “They enjoy a variety of games, while boys prefer action-driven games.” In a world where video games seem to be thriving and children are usually seen glued to screens, Sunnari recognizes the value in board games, “They are very social and inclusive. Anyone can take part, whether you’re 8
years old or 80. The problem with video games is the lack of imagination because you watch what someone else has imagined.” Board games are certainly more interactive and require more attention and mental participation than a video game. For example, Pandemic Legacy is a popular option offered at Challenge Round that requires people to team up to find ways to fight worldwide epidemics, “Many of these are cooperative games in which you team up against the game itself. Unlike traditional board games which can last up to days, modern board games sometimes take two or three hours to complete.”
Round has become a hub for likeminded people to network and start Whatsapp groups to organize game nights. Sunnari is part of a group that connects board game enthusiasts across the GCC.
Board games have opened up a new world for Sunnari, “I’ve met people who make their own board games or have weekly meet-ups.” Challenge
As we left Challenge Round, groups of friends had settled around tables to play games. Their laughter and banter followed us out into the night.
Through boardgames, Sunnari discovered the art of painting miniature figures.
For just SR 35 per person, families or groups of friends could spend the entire day playing a selection of tabletop games, including some tied to franchises like Star Wars and Game of Thrones.

Artists and entertainers in Jeddah to look out for Here are some up-and-coming artists to look out for, from different fields and genre, whose collective work reminds us that the arts are always a great addition to our lives.
Here’s one we don’t hear often about: a Saudi graphic novel. Tariq Bokhari is working on one that fuses traditional comic book style with Japanese manga. “The unique challenge of a graphic novel has always been how to direct the reader, whether it’s how to read the book or move from panel to panel, or just emphasizing the right element in each panel to assist in telling the story,” Bokhari said. The book, titled Talo after the 11-year-old main character Talal’s nickname, is about a boy growing up in Saudi Arabia, and references a lot of the urban legends we grew up on – there’s the one about the lady with hooves for feet, and another about the jathoum that sits on your chest to cause sleep paralysis. All these are allegories for some of the themes explored in the book, bullying and family problems, for instance. Bokhari wouldn’t have done at least 60% of his graphic novel without painstaking attention to detail. He does some fan art, to brush up on his technical skills. “I re-draw a lot. For each drawing, panel, and page, I have to consider composition, perspective, angles, what elements I need to highlight or emphasize and how I’ll do that, where the text goes.” comicsfiend

Shaker Kashgari, 29, is a fulltime calligrapher who believes that practice leads to skill. “You can learn without talent. The main thing is to practice patiently and consistently.” Kashgari is popular for his live calligraphy shows, with the most recent done for Gailah Hub at the Vintage event in Le Prestige Mall. The calligraphy styles he frequently practices are Kufi, Wissam, Diwani, and freestyle. The calligrapher’s process varies depending on the style he’s going for. “If it is Kufi, I sketch by hand then work on Adobe Illustrator. For the other styles I work by hand and then scan.” shakerkashgari
Amr Alngmah tried various art styles until he created his finest masterpiece to date – The Digital Spirituality, a digital sculpture of the Ka’abah made from computer hardware.
“I wanted to create something that combines a computer’s motherboard and the Ka’abah, the most important symbol of the Islamic culture,” he said. He plans on making an innovative piece involving the authentic wooden Roshan of Jeddah’s historical buildings. tolio_

“I wanted to become a film director. But back in the 80s in Saudi Arabia, I didn’t know how I could pursue that.” With cinemas opening soon, he laughs and notes that now is a good time to be one. He joined business school instead, but one day as Alamdar was walking down the hall at college in London, he came across something that made him stop in his tracks: a display of interior design projects. He then requested to change his major. “Interior design was always in me. When I was a child, I drew my own home, and I loved the furniture more than the rooms. I like to think about how objects make us feel and how we relate to them.” Looking around the room, Alamdar’s inclination for material memory becomes clear – antique teapots from Syria, Spanish chairs, Indian windows, and a bird cage in the shape of a Parisian cathedral. He has objects from all over the world, and some from local flea markets or even the streets of Jeddah – there is a large cocoon chair he found discarded on Tahlia Street. This fascination for things is tied to his love for traveling and exploring the cultures of the world. Imagination is at the heart of Alamdar’s passion, whether it’s a scene evoked while listening to Fayruz or an item that reminds him of a time in his life. He even prefers to sketch and draw in pencil. “In gray scale, I can imagine the colors myself, it’s limitless. But once you paint or use colors, it’s the death of imagination.” This isn’t the eccentricity of

an artist; Alamdar’s dyslexia equips him with a different lens with which he views the world. He discovered he was dyslexic in college. “When I found out, I cried as I thought about all the suffering I went through in school. It was like I’d been limping and didn’t know I had a limp.” Once he realized he could live with dyslexia, Alamdar felt empowered by his ability to visualize and construct in his mind. Later, as an interior design graduate, he joined the workforce and has since worked on many large-scale projects and started his own interior design business. He believes that life works in patterns of the number four, “Just like there are four elements, seasons and limbs. In my life, every four years there has been some change, whether I chose it or something forced me to change. Plan what you
do in the next four years and a new opportunity or change should present itself by then.” In November, Alamdar’s Pavilion turned heads at the Tasmeem Art Fair. It was his first major exhibition after four years of battling cancer, a period of time that completely changed his outlook on life. Suffering is essential for the artist, he believes. Being hospitalized deprived him of his lifestyle and gave him a new philosophy which is reflected in the Pavilion, and which he hopes to apply to a bigger project. Alamdar’s design and concept of the Pavilion allowed Jeddah to re-discover a promising artist. Web: amaralamdar.com amardesign

A CONVERSATION WITH
NISREEN GHANDOURAH Author of Al Nahr Al Thalith By Sumaiyya Naseem
e
PROFESSION: Creativ
Copywriter
d
ed FAVORITE CAFE: M oner CURRENT READ: St
bic by John Williams (Ara translation, Dar Athar)
Nisreen Ghandourah was a reader long before she published her own novel. As a child, the cabinets filled with books at home fascinated her, and the earliest seeds of writing were sowed while listening to her father read the stories in the Qur’an.
There’s so much beauty in the storytelling. Each chapter and section is written for a particular audience. The Qur’an taught me the importance of knowing your audience, and finding the right point of view and the reason you’re telling the story. — Nisreen Ghandourah
The metaphysical elements in the Qur’an fed her imagination and inspired her. A strong sense of language made her stand out in high school, and it was then that she realized she had a unique voice in writing. She believes that it’s important 42 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2018
to discover one’s creative identity, saying, “Writing takes hard work. Once you know your voice you can build it.” The Saudi writer was only 22 when she completed her debut, Al Nahr Al Thalith (The Third River). Soon after graduating from Dar Al Hekma University in 2005, she dedicated her time and efforts to writing a story about the Iraq war of 2003. It’s been a decade since her debut was published, and since that time she has established herself as a promising voice from Saudi Arabia. It was after the publication of her debut that Ghandourah evolved into a well-known and respected writer. Under the wing of her publisher, she was able to connect with readers at book fairs and literary events, the most recent being the International Jeddah Book Fair. She dedicated the next few years to learning more about her craft. “I understood that any work could be better, so I took creative writing courses. There are hundreds of references on writing, but I wanted to be around likeminded people who are passionate about stories.” The courses she took were from City University, London School of Journalism, and Oxford University. Armed with an eye for introspection, she began revisiting her favorite Arabic novels to analyze and explore what made a story or character interesting. In the previous year, she used Instagram as a platform
to share her thoughts on the books she’s been reading. Ghandourah doesn’t believe in the concept of star ratings, “I prefer appreciating books for their quality, even if they don’t match my taste. I look at the effort, idea, creative style and relevance.” In her reviews, she introduces the plot of the book, gives her opinion and highlights the main takeaways. Ghandourah teamed up with Jeddah Reads to give a talk on Naguib Mahfouz, titled Respected Sir, after one of her favorite novels by the late author. It was a chance for her to dig deeper and introduce local readers to the brilliance of the writer and how he captured an era of Egypt through literature. She feels it’s important to have such literary discussions in Jeddah, and more options for buying books. “We need libraries or literary clubs where people can get together to discuss books. When I was in my teenage years we had a problem with supply, but we can shop online now.” While collections in local bookstores are still quite limited, websites like Jamalon and Book Depository are good options for bookworms. Nisreen Ghandourah is currently writing her second novel, which is set in Saudi Arabia. The story follows a set of characters who were raised in Saudi in the 80s. “The main character is a horse trainer; I was inspired by the beautiful description of horses in classical Arabic poetry.”
Available on jamalon.com
Al Nahr Al Thalith follows three journalists on a mission to cover the untold stories of the war in Iraq. Ghandourah took up the task of conducting intensive research through documentaries, books, interviews, and diaries to expand her sense of Iraqi culture and society. Her novel shows that life goes on, but it’s up to people in a crisis to either recover or collapse. “I wanted to highlight the reality of war and its destruction of human legacy. Through my characters I portrayed how it affects people on a social and psychological level. War doesn’t solve problems, it just makes people scared of each other.”

THE RED CARPET TAKE-OVER
Before KiraKira, there was “ ” [tir tir, Saudi slang for sequins]. And before red carpet fashion in Hollywood, there was Thursday night in Saudi Arabia.
For decades, Arabs have always been unapologetically overdressed. Call it #BeduFab or the by-product of a decadent lifestyle, but we‘ve always possessed a magpielike attention to all things Swarovski, and today, unfortunately, that obsession has gone to our heads – literally (Huda Beauty highlighters, anyone?). Our affinity of all things gaudy has allowed us to fill the void in the
international fashion scene, which was left by its current penchant for street style minimalism, a lethargic economy, and most recently, the tainted headliner in evening wear, Marchesa (thank you, Harvey Weinstein)! Nowadays, it’s common to see A-list celebrities struggling to announce the Arab name of who they are wearing. Red carpet fashion is just one way Arab designers are taking over the fashion industry.
In this issue, we pick a few of favorite red carpet looks by Arab designers to celebrate their international rise.

WORKOUTS AT THE CORNICHE with Mai Kholief When you live in Jeddah, one of the most exciting times of the year is when the weather is finally cool and breezy. With that and the renovations of the new Corniche, I couldn’t help but plan a workout for everyone to enjoy and make the most out of this time of the year.
SIMPLE YET EFFECTIVE
- For 30 seconds, run if you’re an advanced athlete or jog if you are a beginner, followed by a fast-paced walk, also for 30 seconds. - Looking for a challenge and some more fun? Switch between running and jumping rope every minute. Jumping rope helps build powerful calves for running and improves overall athletic performance. This style of training is called HIIT (high-intensity interval training) and is a cardio exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods. The best thing about this workout is that anyone can do it anywhere, anytime.
HOW DOES HIIT WORK?
It is significant to mention that to make the most out of these workouts, you need to give 58 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2018
Want to track your progress? The FitBit tracks your calories, heart rate, steps, and even sleep quality. It can easily be ordered online from Amazon.com.
100% of your effort during the 30 seconds of work. Intense bursts of effort followed by short resting periods increase your body’s need for oxygen, bring your heart rate up, help increase metabolism, and allow the body to burn fat for up to 48 hours after. Who doesn’t want that?
ACCESSORIZE I have to admit that one of the biggest challenges for females enjoying an outdoors run in Jeddah is the workout gear. You can get affordable gear, such as a light and comfortable running abaya from Mulu Athletics, and also find good quality jump ropes in sports shops such as Nike or Sun & Sands Sports. Avoid running injuries by investing in a good pair of running shoes.
Exercise is a powerful antidepressant. When we exercise, our bodies release mood-enhancing endorphins that help us feel euphoric and relaxed. It releases muscle tension, improves sleeping habits, and reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol. As a fitness coach, I always hear about how people don’t have the proper space or enough time to exercise. My advice to you, my dear reader, is: You don’t have to have the fanciest equipment or even sign up at a gym – all you need is some simple and affordable gear to go and enjoy the outdoors and disconnect. Take care of your body, it’s the only thing you’ve got! DESTINATIONKSA.COM 59

TECHNOLOGY ENABLED CARE A range of new technology is creating opportunities across the health care industry. By Dr. Rida Al Khadra, MD
Chronic diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, remain the epidemic of our time, primarily due to health risk behaviors. Health care providers have long struggled with several persistent problems in order to improve patient experience; their interactions with their patients are sporadic, giving them little insight into the daily decisions
and activities that have a huge impact on their health. Providers could be much more effective in supporting their patients’ health if it was easy, or even automatic, for information and feedback to flow between patients, providers, and caregivers. Fortunately, new technology continues to make that increasingly possible.

PATIENT GENERATED HEALTH DATA (PGHD)
With recent availability of home-based and wearable technologies, health delivery systems now have the capability to collect real-time patient-generated health data (PGHD) directly into the electronic medical record (EMR). Following patient consent, PGHD can be safely transferred into an EMR via a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-secure portal.
LAB-ON-A-CHIP
Scientists have developed a new type of blood testing equipment called “lab-ona-chip” which is a type of portable equipment that can process blood samples in just few minutes.
E-SKIN INTERNET OF THINGS
One of the key breakthroughs is the Internet of Things (IoT), which makes objects smart through embedded sensors and links them using wireless networks enabling everything from remote monitoring to self-regulating medications. It will also help transform how health care is delivered—and alter hospital, health system, nursing home, and medical device company operating models. New payment policies can create the business case for achieving these outcomes.
E-skin is a thin electronic material that mimics human skin. One of the E-skin technologies is a smart apparel that has multiple sensors which monitor body movement such as bending,
stretching and twisting joints. It provides accurate and stable measurement of blood pressure, heartbeats, pulse, and blood oxygen level, including an ECG system that checks the heart’s electrical activity. A 2016 Survey of US Health Care Consumers, which tested consumer reactions to technology-enabled home care in 15 scenarios covering different types of technology and applications including (telemedicine, and drones/ robotics), found that seven in ten consumers are likely to use at least one of the technologies presented; consumers are most interested in using it for post-surgical care and chronic disease monitoring. Caregivers are also more likely to use telemedicine and remote monitoring technology than non-caregivers. The world is now embarking on an aspiring journey to introduce Technology Enabled Care in health; as many people, especially the millennial generation are into health and fitness technologies. These technologies provide the groundwork and future model for healthcare delivery, which will navigate the healthcare needs of the 21st century.

CRĂˆME DE LA CREME A dairy reverie at the heart of France.
We ventured to France on a culinary journey organized by Cream of Europe to discover the origins of French dairy. The trip took us to the picturesque countryside and onto the streets of Paris, where the finest patisseries have long mastered the use of exquisite French cream. Our journey begins at the heart of dairy produce, Normandy. It is in Isigny Ste Mere, a collective consisting of 430 farms and one of two protected designation of Origin Creams, 64 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2018
that we got to experience authentic provincial French hospitality. We were welcomed by the sight of cows grazing across green grass fields, the overcast above us warned of rain fall at any given time. This bucolic setting doesn’t only make for a tranquil scenic view but is in fact one of the secrets behind the superiority of French dairy products. Isigny Ste Mere is a top tier terroir. Its soil is rich and
This entails ascribing the level of authenticity and approved procedures in order to maintain the established reputation of a region in terms of its products in the marketplace. Our discovery trip to Normandy was followed by two refreshing days of exploring the key places in Brittany. We learned about terroir, a set of three natural factors (soil, topography, and climate) that impart certain qualities to the produce grown in the region. When cows graze on the special flora, the cheese that is later produced from the milk reflects the quality of the terroir. Gaec de Toul Manac’h Farm
fertile, the region has mild weather throughout the year, and if you pair that with their strong producer culture that has been preserved and mastered throughout centuries; you have the best conditions to produce excellent milk and thereby, exceptional cream, butter, and other dairy ingredients. A visit to their factory opened our eyes to the rigorous process of milk production. The cooperative ensures that it meets POD (Protected Origin of Designation) standards.
In Brittany, we also visited GAEC de Toul Manac’h, a Paysan Breton farm, where we explored the milk-production units and the special care that goes into animal welfare. To ensure maximum comfort for the animals, the farm we visited was equipped with massage appliances for the cows. They also had music in the stables since cows produce more milk while listening to music. To further provide comfort to the animals, the farm incorporated automatic machines that milked the cows at their convenience. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 65
Interestingly, Brittany is one of the two milk-producing regions that has ideal climate for farming. In fact, it is the most important milk-producing region in France. The farms in Britanny are largely familyrun, where skills are passed down from one generation to the next. The informative trip to Brittany was followed by a sweet gastronomic adventure. We headed towards Paris, fashion capital and equally, haute dessert central. We witnessed and tasted how French cream are artfully incorporated to transform desserts. 66 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2018
During our visit to La Maison de la Crème by Elle&Vire, we attended a masterclass and demonstration by Chef Ludovic Chesnay on choux à la crème filling. Our most memorable stop was at the Un Dimanche a Paris, a patisserie where its renowned executive pastry chef Nicolas Bacheyre held a unique workshop focusing the fine qualities of this famous ingredient. For a couple of hours, the scent of vanilla and oven fresh baked goods marveled our sense. We were captivated by the skillful manipulation of French cream, known for its ability to withstand rigorous culinary application, to create velvety whitescapes and fluffy toppings. The flavors beautifully matched the pristine aesthetics, delicately balanced and textured.
Visit to Gaec de Toul Manac’h farm with Mr. Jaouen
We went back to Saudi Arabia with a newfound appreciation of French creams (President, Elle & Vire, Paysan Breton, Isigny Ste Mere) and other French products with the PDO seal on the supermarket shelves. Now all we have to do is master the techniques, and recreate the French culinary reverie we’ve experienced at the comfort of our homes. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 67

BEIT KAKI A Traditional Hijazi Summer Home
COURTESY PHOTO/ DILMUNICOUPLE.COM
By Mohammed Mirza
72 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2018
Hijaz has historically been a place where trader and merchant families were the richest. As the region was at the crossroads of many trade routes, it was these families who made huge profits from the lucrative trade. These families normally had summer homes in Taif, where they would head in order to escape the blistering heat of the Arabian summer. The city was like an unofficial summer capital of the country back in the day. The mansions these families made set the tone for the vernacular architecture of the region. One such is the summer home of the Kaki family called Beit Kaki.
STAFF PHOTO//MOHAMMED MIRZA
We were recently in Taif on a business trip, but it’s not the kind of place where one can just visit for work and leave without touring. The city is so beautiful that it deserves to be seen and explored. Opportunely, we got some time off our schedule, and so we looked for places to see that were close to our hotel. Beit Kaki popped on our screen and was only a few minutes away. We instantly hastened to it. The house was smaller than we expected; it didn’t even stand out as a tourist site, blending in with its surroundings as it
was. There was a pool in the roundabout in front that gave it an aristocratic touch just like the mansions of Europe. We saw children resting under its verandah and assumed that they were there as part of a field trip from school as a school bus was parked nearby. However, they left soon afterward and we figured out that they weren’t here on a trip. They were just chilling beneath the mansion on their way back from school. From the façade, the building looks like a small mansion as it is only double storied. However, in length, the house is pretty long when compared to its width. Beit Kaki was built in 1943 just before the Saudi oil boom. In its design, one can see traces of Western influence, prominent in its cylindrical pillars and triangular balconies on the roof. However, since reinforced concrete wasn’t used in its construction, the house manages to retain an Arabian feel. Despite the simple windows and small façade, Beit Kaki has a unique aura to it and is one of the best preserved of all historic mansions in Taif. The preservation is most likely due to the fact that it has been sympathetically restored in the recent past. The windows, however, have been given a miss in the restoration.
DESTINATIONKSA.COM 73
Notwithstanding the fact that the family presumably spent only a few months every year in this house, they have not compromised any bit on its grandeur. Some of the yellow paint coated on its walls remains. It was a welcome change against the regular whitewashes of the other historic Hejazi mansions. The interiors of the house were coated in other colors like blue and green that made for an interesting contrast. The entrance of the house is where all the different colors of the house seem to converge – the part of the house that also features in many 74 DESTINATION JEDDAH FEBRUARY 2018
Instagram feeds. Unlike other houses from much the same era, the windows here are not like the rawasheen types. They carry the floral and geometric design patterns but are simpler and less elaborate. Beit Kaki’s main door, however, is a far cry from the windows boasting elaborate Arabesque designs. It appears to be made of teakwood most likely imported from India or Indonesia. Unfortunately, the house is currently not open for visitors so one has to just imagine what it looks like from the inside. Presumably, it is built similar to other Hejazi homes, with its
main door leading to an entrance hall called the dilhiz. The first floor would be for guests and the upper floor reserved for the house’s residents. Taif has no shortage of remnants from the Pre-Islamic era; if one wants to get an idea of its recent past, Beit Kaki would be the perfect place to start. After all, its elegant architecture and design will not only serve as a reminder of history, its outstanding characteristics can also inspire new designs for contemporary construction and art.
