BUSINESS PURSUITS

THE SHARBATLY LEGACY The apples and oranges of building a family legacy as told by Seif Sharbatly By Jou Pabalate

Anyone who grew up in Saudi Arabia would have eaten a fruit with the iconic sticker of a child with a red cap. This happens to be the logo of Mohammed Abdallah Sharbatly Co Ltd, one of the first local fruit and vegetable trading companies in Saudi Arabia. Abdallah Abbas Sharbatly first started the business in the 1930s, seeing an opportunity in providing fruits and vegetables as part of the family’s catering business. From there, the Sharbatly patriarch would build the foundation of the company by importing and distributing all kinds of fruits. In the 1970’s the enterprise was passed on to 14 JAN / FEB 2019

his eldest son, Mohammed. In the decades that followed, the company grew from its humble beginnings--- from three stores in Jeddah, Dammam, and Riyadh, it has now expanded to 12 branches across Saudi Arabia, with agricultural operations spanning the globe. By the 1990s Mohammed was joined by his sons, Abdallah, Seif, and Hashim. The family maintained its upward trajectory and by 2004, the company was relaunched as the Mohammed Abdallah Sharbatly Company Ltd. Wanting to gain insight into the inner workings of this household name, we spoke to Seif Sharbatly, current managing director of the group and CEO of Sharbatly Co Ltd in Egypt. Seif Sharbatly recalls his first time getting introduced to the family business; tagging along his father as a little boy. “I remember my father telling me to come with him to work, I would sit in his office, sometimes go around with him as he went through the demands of the day.

Courtesy Photos / Seif Sharbatly

Family businesses have been part of the Kingdom’s fabric since its unification days. Jeddah as a port city gave birth to merchants and traders who are now legendary that became patriarchs of legacy establishments. Family businesses make up 90 percent of the enterprises in Saudi Arabia, making them key drivers of economic growth and employment.

Patience, it’s one of the things we learned from our father. That, and there’s no such thing as luck; luck comes with and after hardwork. Seif Sharbatly

DESTINATION KSA15

Abdallah Abbas Sharbatly founded the company in the 1930s. 16 JAN / FEB 2019

The Sharbatly Home in Historic Jeddah, Al Balad

Eventually, he’d put me through different job rotations in the company, learning the ropes. After getting my university degree, I trained some more, from the IT department to the warehouse, name it, I went through it,” Seif said. Even though he is the son of the founder, Seif worked his way up to where he is today. In fact, it took him 10 years before he was appointed the CEO of Sharbatly’s Egypt operations. One of the challenges faced by many family businesses is retaining ownership past the second generation. Fortunately, it seems that the Sharbatly family is well on its way to surpassing this. Just as his father trained him, Seif and his siblings are preparing the next generation of Sharbatly leaders. His own son joins the company for 6-week job rotations during his semester breaks. Another admirable trait of the Sharbatly’s

is their ability to separate the business of the family from the family business. Conflicts seldom occur and they are neatly kept outside of dinner table conversations. The brothers and their father have a voting system in place to resolve issues--- each one getting one vote, while the patriarch gets two. The Sharbatly brand has been able to expand and innovate with the demands of time. Apart from providing fresh fruits and vegetables on Saudi tables across every region, they also own farms in Chile and South Africa, a citrus packaging plant in Egypt, numerous cold storage facilities across Saudi Arabia, branches in Bahrain and Dubai. Just recently, the company entered into importing mineral water from Italy, with its own brand, Montana. As Seif mentioned in our conversation, “for any business

to survive, you need to be able to seek opportunities, and if they are not there, just as my grandfather did, make opportunities. We learn from the wisdom of the family, from our relatives but we also need to push forward: solve problems unique to our generation; or keep up with the fast pace of the industry. Right now for example, we have found new ways to distribute our products effectively, and soon we will be launching an application that will bring quality Sharbatly produce to your doorstep.” Perhaps, one of the reasons behind Sharbatly’s success is the commitment of every generation to contribute to its legacy; and their ability to stay agile. One thing is for sure, every time you come across that Sharbatly seal of quality--- you know it came from a Saudi family that has hard work written in their genes. SAIF AL TURKI, 19 THE NEXT OLYMPIAN

Becoming a professional athlete was always a dream for Saif, but being overweight, it felt impossible to achieve. His life made a 180-degree turn when he suffered from extreme burns from an accident. Saif took this as a God-given opportunity to start over again, and that’s when he incorporated fitness into his health regime and decided to train for a triathlon. His parents were his biggest support system and encouraged him into fitness and running. There was no stopping him. Saif got the 3rd place in the Dubai 2XU Triathlon and 5th place in the ITU World Triathlon Series in Abu Dhabi – a huge leap from barely being able to do anything just a few years prior. Preparing and training for his first Ironman 70.3, the first step and the most difficult challenge was to eat clean. Saif now aspires to be an Olympic athlete. His international idol is Jan Frodeno, who, according to Saif, is “just the best triathlete.” saifalturki33

THE INSPIRATIONAL MOTIVATOR Being passionate about writing and public speaking, he was on the lookout for any opportunity he could find to share his ideas and thoughts. In 2017, he was hired as an Arab News columnist, and since then has had the opportunity to work and interact with many likeminded people. Sami says that a common obstacle people face is finding their own voice with the development and changes in media. With nonstop work, he is currently working on a huge project that is scheduled to be published in February. He is also working on having his own TED Talk, radio show appearance, and exploring multiple acting possibilities. Sami’s idea of success is doing what one loves, whether it’s soccer, getting an A, or acing your passion project. He is inspired by many different people – writers, speakers, authors, leaders, etc – but his most profound role model is his family. samifathioffical

EMON SHAKOOR, 25

THE ENTREPRENEUR’S CHAMP

Emon broke the corporate age barrier when she became the youngest CEO and founder of two tech startups, EventFen, an app connecting youth to professional events, and Blossom, Saudi Arabia’s first female-focused accelerator. Emon obtained her Bachelor’s in Cognitive Science from UC San Diego and was accepted to present her own neuroscience research at the world-renowned Society for Neuroscience in 2015. In the same year, she was recognized as one of the youngest researchers at the age of 21. Emon’s success didn’t come easy. Growing up battling epilepsy, she suffered issues relating to her health and also faced a few hiccups while building Blossom and taking it to new heights after the previous co-founder left the company. The main challenge was not the task of leading the company on her own, but to gain people’s trust to operate an entire company as a solo female founder.

Blossom focuses on companies led by women and fosters the techpreneur community in the Kingdom. “It is an exciting time to be part of the entrepreneurship ecosystem. It shows that no matter what, perseverance and determination can get you anywhere. I believe this is the tip of the iceberg.” In 2017, Emon gave a TedxWomen talk on her journey living with 50+ seizures a day for nearly 20 years and how she overcame her roadblocks and turned them into her

superpower. She is currently writing a sequel to her Ted Talk, about the power of seizing opportunities and inspiring a wave of fearless Saudi women. Today, she is proud of all the challenges that have molded her into a stronger person. Success to Emon is building a sustainable, scalable, impactful, and valuedriven community. She is grateful to her parents and her mentors Marwan Jamal and Eng. Reda Islam, who always believed in her. emonshakoor

REEM AL ABOUD, 19 THE RACER

Reem has been passionate about driving cars and karting from a very young age. She always aspired to follow her father’s footsteps, as he used to be a racer himself. Her love and passion took her through the years on a journey of practice and improvement, until she had the opportunity of becoming the first Saudi female to drive the Formula E car Gen2 at the Ad Diriyah Circuit in Riyadh on the 16th of December. Reem is currently an Advertising and Creative Design student at The University of Business and Technology. She believes that success comes from facing challenges, and learning to overcome them. She plans to improve on her skills; until she becomes the racer she aspires to be, and to represent Saudi in podiums worldwide. She recently participated in the Saudi Timebreak Championship in Riyadh and managed to win 1st place during the second and third rounds. Competing with drivers that have more experience and years of practice is one such challenge that she intends to overcome by believing in herself and her abilities. Receiving a lot of support from her father is her primary motivation; he’s always encouraged her to never be afraid of trying something new. reemthamerr DESTINATION DESTINATIONKSA23 KSA23

ABDULLAH ALYAHYA, 19 THE CREATIVITY ARCHITECT

A young Saudi architect in the making, Abdullah is studying Architecture minoring in Entrepreneurship and Graphic Design at the University of Miami. He has dreamt of becoming an architect since the age of five, when he was introduced to the world of tiny blocks: Legos. Later on, he discovered his interest in a variety of art mediums. He describes himself as a perfectionist – nothing ever seems to be completely done in 24 JAN / FEB 2019

his eyes, and there’s always room for improvement in everything he does. Abdullah is inspired by a variety of artists, architects, and entrepreneurs. There is Shahad Al Azzaz, a Saudi architect he looks up to in terms of finding his own architectural style. Another inspiration is architect Hassan Fathy, who had a positive impact on his generation and the architectural community.

Creating work that is impactful, defines Abdullah’s view of success. When it comes to challenges, Abdullah believes that obstacles can’t be entirely anticipated. However, he aims to be confident enough to be able to tackle each one of them. MOTEB AL HODHAIF, 11

THE YOUNGEST PHOTOGRAPHER OF KINGS At the age of 11, Moteb obtained titles including “Photographer of the Kings” after taking a photo of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, in addition to “The Youngest Photographer in the Middle East,” and receiving a certificate from the Arab League Institution in Egypt.

Moteb has been active not only in the Kingdom, but also around the Gulf. Participating in Al Mosafer travel website video commercial, and the television program Little Big Stars on MBC, are some of Moteb’s achievements. He hopes to live up to the accolades he has received so far. “Success isn’t about being famous and wealthy, it’s about constantly improving in the face of difficulties,” he says. He looks up to successful individuals who excel in their

respective fields. Because of the nature of his work as a (very young!) photographer, he has to go through the same hoops as every other aspiring professional – obtaining permits as necessary, seeking the right subject, and attending lots of events. YASMINA AL MUTABAGANI, 22 THE AUTHOR

Yasmina’s writing journey began when she was in Grade 7. Since then, she has wanted to be an author who writes books that speak to the soul. Accomplishing a considerable amount of achievements at a very young age, she recently published her debut, “Waheeba’s Lie.” Yasmina has also written for Saudi Gazette and also conducts different writing workshops.

Her biggest challenge has been the wait for companies and people to respond back to her. “I’ve had to muster up the courage and faith that things will eventually work out,” she says. “I believe in looking at the glass as half full and not half empty. As a new author reaching out to so many people, I always remind myself that my voice will be heard, I’ll just have to be patient.” 26 JAN / FEB 2019

Success for Yasmina is having a positive impact on others, allowing oneself to reach out to them, and them to reach out to you. She looks up to Fatima Al Banawi, for her honesty and fearlessness in expressing herself. One of the authors who really inspires her is Elif Shafak, the author of “The Forty Rules of Love.” blur_de_blur

FTOON AL THAEDI, 23 THE ART ADVOCATE

An emerging artist and aspiring leader who stumbled upon art and let it completely define her future, Ftoon says that choosing art as has been the best decision she has ever made. Her biggest accomplishment so far is using her art to shift views and break stereotypes about Saudi women. Ftoon jumpstarted her journey with a Student Grant from the US Department of State. She embarked on a six-week training that focuses on leadership and civic engagement. This led her to the launch of her dream project, the Saudi Art Initiative (SAI), which supports young Saudi artists by giving them a proper space and platform to express their creativity.

Following the success of SAI’s event, Ftoon started interacting with individuals directly from around the world to build a global network. It was a proud moment for Ftoon as she became the first Saudi to represent her country in The Hansen Summer Fellowship Program for International Cooperation and Leadership. Ftoon believes that by avoiding the walls of limitations we often build around ourselves, she will be able to come up with great and unique ways to tackle the many obstacles that she may face. Ftoon’s next adventure is to become the Saudi delegate for G(irls)20 Japan 2019. She’s

planning another art event and taking it to the next level with an innovative theme, and a bigger number of young, talented artists. Ftoon’s idea of success is connecting with as many individuals as possible and leaving the biggest positive impact through these fostered and meaningful connections. She is greatly inspired by her mother Hessa Al Muzaini for her social work. As for her international role model, it’s Heather Barnabe, the CEO of G(irls)20 as she continues to support young women by giving them opportunities to share their passions openly. fnoon.ftoon DESTINATION DESTINATIONKSA27 KSA27

KHALID AHMED OTAIF, 23 THE INVENTOR

Khalid is a programmer, an innovation designer, and a student at King Abdulaziz University in the fields of Mechanical Engineering Productions and Systems.

SAUDI FUTURE CHASERS

His interest in research, innovation, and inventions, along with his creative side, has led him to win the first place at the Geneva Inventions Exhibition, where his creation helps the blind and the visually impaired identify colors using sensations. At the age of 23 (in 2018), he received the Golden Medal Award in the World in Switzerland, and the Best Invention Award in the World in China, within the invention and innovation fields. According to Khalid, the fear of failure can take hold and make him hesitant about starting a new project or plan, preventing him from reaching his goals. Fortunately, he believes that success consists of failed plans. “When one faces obstacles and things don’t seem to go as planned, it’s a good idea to change that plan, but not the ultimate goal,” he says. The fact is, he adds, that sometimes you win, and other times you learn from your mistakes. Khalid 28 JAN / FEB 2019

believes that the outcome of any plan is often not as important as the person you become in the process of achieving your goals. Khalid looks up to Muhannad Abu Dia, a Saudi inventor from Jizan who, despite his inability to see, managed to leave a mark with his work in the fields of science and invention at a young age. kh_otaif

LILLIAN ISMAIL, 23 THE DESIGNER

Named the youngest Saudi jewelry designer and maker at the age of 17 in 2013 Lillian Ismail has been gaining repute for her jewelry line ever since. ABDULJABBAR AL HAMOOD, 22 THE SCIENTIST

Abduljabbar is currently pursuing a Biomedical Engineering degree with a concentration in Technology Innovation, while also minoring in Chemistry and Material Science & Engineering at Boston University. Being ambitious and active in the world of science and innovation, biotechnology, geneticengineering, and Matlab coding data analysis, he has participated in various competitions and won awards. One of his many achievements include winning 1st place in Plant Sciences at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), in addition to having MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Society for Science & the Public, and The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) name a planet after him. “31926 Alhamood” is a tribute to his project at Intel ISEF. To Abduljabbar, success is not about achieving but about getting up stronger after failing. He learns, develops, and expands with his learning when he fails, not when he succeeds. Some of the Saudi figures he admires when reading their scientific publications and looking at the way they solve issues are Dr. Husam Zawawi and Dr. Ghada Almutairi, who are both scientists working on today’s biggest dilemmas in the health industries, which are how bacteria can develop resistance to antibiotics that help fight off life-threatening infections, and how to pinpoint inflammations within the human 30 JAN / FEB 2019

MOHAMAD ALMUNAJEM, 22 THE TECHPRENEUR

Mohamad obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the London School of Commerce, and later, his Master’s degree in Economics and Marketing. Upon returning to Saudi in 2016, he noticed that there was a need for a place that connects service providers with consumers, which led him to create the app Daleni, a marketplace for services. The app debuted in 2016, and by August 2017, it was a fully functional platform that provided home services, by connecting service providers with customers. Daleni focuses on bringing high-demand home services to every household, with ease of mobile technology. The services that are offered include barbers, makeup artists and hairstylists; in addition to house cleaning, furniture moving, and garden designing. The service providers can either be companies, or individuals. Mohamad worked on software and tech that allows the app to successfully predict what services consumers are looking for (and can’t easily find). After launching in Bahrain this year, Daleni partnered with Ukrainian company Qarea to expand and make the app available in the Middle East and North Africa. Mohamad admits that he has a long way to go in mastering the tech industry and gaining experience, despite his educational background in Economics. He is also, however, a risk-taker, always ready with a plan to reach his

goals. He looks up to his father as his role model, along with Mark Zuckerberg, whose tech and entrepreneurial acumen is now legend. msimba_ DESTINATION DESTINATIONKSA31 KSA31

The archeological jewel of the Kingdom, Al-Ula plays host to a special season of festivities. The Winter at Tantora is the first event of its kind to be held in a UNESCO World Heritage site. Designed to showcase the wonders of Al-Ula to the rest of the world, the festival announced the reawakening of this magical region as Saudi Arabia’s first tourist destination. 36 JAN / FEB 2019

The first event of its kind launched last December 2018, giving way to eight weekends of world-class performances and events at breath-taking Ul Ala.

Al-Ula, which lies north of the Arabian peninsula is home to numerous archeological sites and is a meeting point of many civilizations. Winter at Tantora Festival reflects this heritage and showcases the historical depth of the region to the world, which has been witness to the development of Al-Ula society on many different levels including agriculture, astronomy and construction.

Stars Under the Stars

Under the dazzling night skies of Al-Ula, guests were able to experience the transcendent power of virtuoso talents such as Mohamed Abdo, Majida El Roumi, Renaud Capuçon, Omar Khairat, Lang Lang, Um Kulthum, Andrea Bocelli (1 February) and Yanni (8 February). Each performed in a stunning, purpose-built concert hall which showcases the natural majesty of Al-Ula’s scenery, thus bringing together the beauty of music and the beauty of nature in a way that has not been seen before. To add to the already memorable event, on the sixth weekend, Egyptian legend Um Kulthum gives her worldfirst ‘performance’, via a hologram show.

The Ultimate Meat Sheet By Ahmed Darwish

Now, we don’t mean those shops that sell tobacco, but actually restaurants that sell smoked meats. Smoking is the process of flavoring, browning, and cooking food by exposing it to smoke from burning or smoldering material, most often wood. Items on these menus would

include brisket, ribs, pulled shoulder, and can include chicken and hot dogs. But where would you go for some carnivorous indulgence?

OUR FOOD TRUCK OBSESSION Navigating Riyadh’s food truck scene By Mustafa Al Hafi Edited by Nessreen Tamano

We’re all familiar with “Conventional Cone ice cream trucks” roaming the streets in Riyadh’s picnic places; when I was younger, we’d often seek them out on our way to the airport or by Thoumamah road, a popular picnic place away from the city in the 80s and 90s, and I didn’t know it at the time, but this would be my first experience with food truck culture. In 2016, the revolution of food trucks began in Saudi cities, giving many young men and women the opportunity to create extraordinary food truck business ideas, not limited to fast food. We’ve seen food trucks serving coffee, sweets, ”nitrogen ice cream,” and traditional food. For our young entrepreneurs, the trend offered them a way to earn extra income – primary to those hit with the recent rise in (corporate) unemployment. It’s relatively easy to start a food truck business – if you have a creative idea, just get a truck, meet the health and safety requirements of the municipality, obtain a permit to run your food truck business, and you’re good to go. 58 JAN / FEB 2019

Early Days In Riyadh, we can pinpoint the birthplace of the first three popular food trucks in the city at the Red Crescent Yard off King Fahd Road, which quickly became a popular destination for people looking to have a different, casual dining experience. Foodies and non-foodies alike came out to try the fare at 4twins Food Truck (which specialized in desserts topped with fruit and chocolate), Tagfela Food Truck (arguably the first in the city to serve grilled burgers), and Bescletta (serving their signature Spanish coffee). The site did not last long; after it was shut down after some incidents that led to noise and loitering complaints, the food

trucks spread out to different streets in Riyadh, some of them parking at Anas bin Malik Street, at Prince Said Bin Mohammad Bin Mougren Street, and up north at King Abdulaziz St. At the Al Malaga neighborhood, Prince Mohammed Bin Saud Bin Abdulaziz Street became the new food truck haunt, as more and more food trucks parked themselves to serve fast food, coffee, and assorted snacks to groups of families and friends. Diners either use the seating provided by some of the trucks, or bring their own foldable chairs, spending more time in the area to enjoy the casual, open-air dining experience relatively uncommon around these parts. DESTINATION KSA 59

DRIVING BUSINESS We quickly notice that a remarkable number of the people running the food trucks are very young and hard-working! "My main motivation was to earn extra income to support my family," said Sulaiman Al Misnad, owner of Happy Cup, which serves specialized coffee. "I started with one of my friends by trying out all kinds of coffee, and then I worked to get a certificate from the International Coffee Organization. I hope to soon open my first coffee shop.” Coffee lovers passing by who are going northwards toward King Salman Road can find Sulaiman in his truck making coffee with different flavors. If you’re passing by Prince Mohammed Bin Saud Street, you won’t miss Gold & Black, another popular coffee truck with an eye-catching display design. Owned by Bader Al Sharif, it was one of the trucks serving at the Red Crescent Yard. He started out by offering design services to other food truck owners, later surprising his family and friends when he launched his own. Bader runs two trucks that serve coffee, and one that services events and special occasions. Shrimpini is one of the unique trucks that caught our attention, with their shrimp menu and the owners – close friends Mohammad Al Kashef and Mohammad Al Saab – working behind the griller and happily serving and chit-chatting with their customers. “The market 60 JAN / FEB 2019

is wide open, anyone can earn extra,” said Al Saab. When asked about the challenges they face while running a truck, they mention electricity and running water. “We rely heavily on generators, which can be annoying for us and our diners,” Al Saab said. Needless to say, all the food truck owners I spoke to would really appreciate a dedicated space for them, with water and electricity, and support from the municipality to maintain security and ethical business practices. They’re open to paying the necessary fees in return for all of this. I certainly hope this happens, and that the food truck culture continues to be a part of ours. It’s a great way to spend time with friends and family, try out different food, snacks, and drinks, and enjoy the weather away from the hustle and bustle of city living.

GAME ON New Generation takes the lead in arcade games and interactive entertainment. Established in 1996, New Generation Amusement Co. was the first independent arcade in Jeddah driven by the peak of technology in arcade gaming in the 90s. Starting off with New Planet in 1997 on Tahlia Street, they quickly became the hub of the latest Japanese and American video games attracting gamers of all ages. With the evolution of gaming consoles and their easy accessibility, video arcades

declined in popularity and suffered a major setback. However, New Generation attempted to bring back that magic by reestablishing themselves once again through a new approach. As part of the second phase of development by New Generation, Game Box was introduced – a new arcade destination that turned out to be a massive hit opened at Corniche. After successfully operating amusement and arcade gaming arenas, they launched an indoor entertainment complex called the Fun Corner, mainly focused on amusement facilities in

malls. This was followed by the Shabab Corner, which targeted the youth visiting cafes, gyms, and sports centers. The shabab at the youthoriented gaming corner can stick to the arcade games, foosball, or air hockey, or instead opt for basketball, boxing machines, or shooting games to commemorate their experience. Keeping in mind the growing industry of events and entertainment, New Generation started a special corner for carnival midway entertainment called Carnival Corner, providing fairs, festivals, and celebrations with full-on gaming entertainment. New Generation prides itself in providing the latest in high-tech entertainment to 50% of Jeddah’s public events as recorded in April.

DESTINATION X SHOES & DRAMA

8 ways to go from wannabe to legit. Contrary to what we've been told, labelling oneself "fashion designer" in his or her Instagram bio, doesn't make for one. So here are eight steps to help you tap into the $2.4 trillion industry and make you go from shady, online wannabe, to Ashi-dressing-CardiB-andBeyoncĂŠ status!

76 JAN / FEB 2019

1

Know Your Skills

Good taste and innate flair for fashion aren't necessarily prerequisites for Fashion Design Success 101, yet recognizing one’s strengths and weaknesses definitely is.

2

Build A Team

With fashion design encompassing both the creative and the technical, it is integral to build a team with the skill set that compliments your own. Find the Robert Duffy to your Marc Jacobs, the Pierre Berge to your Saint Laurent.

3

Find A Mentor

Fashion is certainly a tough profession to break through, and even harder to stay on top. Heidi Klum agrees; “one day you’re in, the next day you’re out.” So having some guidance from someone who’s been there and done that, never hurts.

4

Know Your Market

This is what separates the fashion designer from the fashion enthusiast; because when it comes down to it: fashion is a business! Our advice is make sure you know your consumer and base your target market off a proper feasibility study... not your favorite TV “IT” girl!

5

Brand Identity

Whether high fashion or high street, it is essential for a designer to know his/her brand identity and make sure its DNA is imprinted into everything, from the logo and packaging, to the product and product placement!

6

Register Your Brand

With the Ministry of Commerce & Investment's new electronic service, you can easily complete your commercial registration in 180 seconds flat! So become legit by visiting: https://ecr.mci.gov.sa/

7

Budget

The decision to budget your start-up cost may seem like a no-brainer, yet many people don’t know how to budget correctly. A designer must consider all costs, ranging from organizational, operational, production, sales and marketing. Gifting a blogger a free Abaya is a cost regardless if you have to pay her to post! One should always know their targeted price point (thanks to your feasibility study) before they even think about sourcing the materials.

8

Market

If you design the most fabulous dress but no ones ever wears it... is it still fabulous? The key aspect of creating a fashion empire is marketing. Just ask Chiara Ferragni— her brand is kitschy at best, tacky at worst, yet her 15.7 million following still buys into it- literally. So whether it’s product placement on a Kuwaiti blogger’s feed, celebrity dressing & gifting, or hiring a marketing consultancy firm, like Niche Arabia (#SubtleProductPlacement), you need to market your brand in order to make people want to wear it! The latest collection takes into consideration the insights of a global network of color-trend researchers, and explores a range of color palettes developed by color experts to reflect that distinct urban lifestyle. From light to dark and everything in between, the collection embraces 28 colors defining homes around the globe for the coming year. Choosing the right shade can be challenging, so Jotun created a color card to help you narrow it down and create your personal color identity. Designed to create practical color combinations with an easy-to-use tool, it allows users to easily identify complementary shades within a single color family, or create harmonious color variations within the same space.

Mattresses should be deep-cleaned and sanitized at least twice a year.

HEALTHY LIVING Starts with A Healthy Home Indoor Environment quality is linked to your well-being.

The average person spends a third of their life in bed, exposing them to dust mites, bed bugs, mold, and fungi that make themselves at home in mattresses. This affects us in various subtle and not so subtle ways, like developing asthma, eczema, and fatigue. Due to this, it is highly recommended that mattresses are deep-cleaned and sanitized to prevent and alleviate associated symptoms and diseases. The Healthy Home KSA is a company that specializes in Chemical free sanitation, treatments for mattresses, sofas, curtains, and all other furniture. The company has a unique process in which it deep cleans and sanitizes various indoor furniture. The unique three step process of Industrial grade vacuum, Ultraviolet exposure, and dry steam on all kinds of furniture insures a sanitized, germ free environment for you and your loved ones. The Healthy Home also offers a Room disinfection service that is ideal for children’s playrooms, nurseries and schools. The newly introduced AC duct sanitation and deep clean removes all kinds of infestations and dust that affect the air you breathe. These AC ducts are a gateway to the outside world introducing all sorts of foreign bacteria that makes the duct its home unless sanitized and removed. In a world where we spend most of our time indoors, we ensure that you breathe and sleep better creating a healthier living environment.

A FOOD LOVER’S REGION Northern Ireland

Producing some of the world’s finest food and drink, Northern Ireland has recently been voted the World’s Best Food Destination at the International Travel and Tourism Awards 2018 in London, United Kingdom. Its unique geography and climate is one of the prime reasons for really good-quality, fresh produce. The crystal clear loughs and winding Atlantic coastline are home to a variety of fish from wild salmon, oysters and eels. The lush green countryside and grass is a reason why NI’s creamy milk and dairy products are so sought after. Northern Ireland also has its very own “Orchard County”, home to the famous crisp Armagh Bramley apples with many artisan bakeries using local ingredients, from organic dairies and farmers.

Food and drink from Northern Ireland is exported to over 70 countries. With NI products regularly featuring in global awards for outstanding taste including the UK Great Taste Awards, the World Cheese Awards and the Blas na hÉireann, Irish Food and Drink Awards. This success is down to the pure, lush countryside, and the farmers and producers who are dedicated to traceability and passionate about quality. People are often surprised to know that the creams used by the region’s finest chefs, the fine aged halal beef and lamb and organic salmon on their restaurant menus come from this small and unassuming part of the UK. I went to Brisbane, Queensland in Australia for the first time in 2013 to do my post-graduate studies, and ended up staying for three years. While there, I discovered a love for the Australian city, and my experiences during my stay have helped develop many aspects of my character.

A SAUDI IN OZ Brisbane, My Second Home Words & Photos by Joseph Kurashi Edited by Nessreen Tamano

90 JAN / FEB 2019

If you’re thinking about visiting Brisbane, whether for a short trip or a longer one, here are some of my recommendations! There are four seasons across most of the country – wet and dry in the tropical north. The weather Down Under can be unpredictable; seasons are at opposite times to those in the northern hemisphere. December to February is summertime, March to May is autumn, June to August is winter, and September to November is spring.

Stay It’s easy to get around on foot and take a bike ride for short distances. A beach trip to the Gold Coast and Noosa Heads on Sunshine Coast (both a must!) can take up to 45 minutes by train.

See The city is really like a small version of New York City. For animal lovers, visit the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary to meet Aussie animals, or the Australia Zoo run by Steve Irwin’s family to carry on his legacy. At early dusk, keep an eye open for a school of bats soaring sky-high! Take a stroll and enjoy the view at the many parks and beaches, too.

Eat

Australia is way more than “putting a shrimp on a barbie! Explore the many restaurants, street carts, weekly markets, and festivals, where you can try all sorts of cuisines. Gotta love the pizza desserts and smoothies even during winter time!

92 JAN / FEB 2019

Do

Brisbane has a lot of cultural, sports, and fashion festivals, and my favorite – comic cons. Attending these events are a great way of learning about their culture. Picnics, BBQs, wall climbing, and cycling at Kangaroo Point (high or low grounds) are also a must.

Making a dedication toward sustainability and environmental awareness, in 2017, Six Senses launched the Earth Lab, a green initiative to ensure as little waste as possible to reduce the resort’s carbon footprint. They achieve these goals through small actions that add up over time. For example, the resort has on-site water bottling to minimize the impact on the environment of trucks shipping bottled water back and forth. Six Senses also has a roughly 6-acre farm called Dibba that serves the resort with free-range chickens for eggs, and cows and goats for dairy. The farm features the stars of the show – camels Humphrey and Wednesday, who are popular and friendly with the kids. It also boasts a beautiful organic garden as the main fruit and vegetable source for the resort. Dibba takes advantage of food waste and uses is as compost. Visitors can go on producepicking escapades, and after their visits, are given seeds to grow their own plants at home.
