As the cool breeze sweeps throughout the Kingdom, we gear up for new adventures. Winter is a much-awaited time, it opens opportunities to explore the great outdoors, to gather and spend crisp mornings and cozy nights. In this special edition of Destination KSA, we’re inviting you to dust off your farwas and embrace the wonderful weather. First off, we’ve compiled a guide to the different destinations waiting to be discovered this season. Taking you from the majestic wander lands for starry camping nights, to the highlands for gahwa by the clouds, down to the beachside wonders that gives you a little warmth and break from the cold. One of the local past times when the temperature starts dipping is to head to the desert--- or a road side wadi. Kashta or camping is in our blood and one that is enjoyed in different ways, regardless of what generation you’re from. There’s something about sharing some tea and passing around the dallah while you put together a list of the different campsites you can visit; and also the different adventures to be had while you’re out there. And of course, what’s a year of Destination KSA without our special annual take on the best and yummiest eateries. THE COOLEST CITIES IN SAUDI ARABIA Dig out those sweaters If you love cold weather and are planning a vacation this winter, then this list of the coolest places in the country can come in handy. From snow in the desert to freezing mountain peaks, Saudi Arabia truly is full of surprises.
TABUK Average low-temperature 5.7°C If there’s a place in Saudi Arabia with the highest chance of seeing snow during winters, then it is the Jabal Al Lawz, which lies northwest of Tabuk. If you are looking to get an adrenaline rush, you can ski or snowboard downhill. Most of those viral photos of camels treading in the snow were shot here. So come and get captivated by the snowy hills of the almond mountain.

ABHA Average low temperature 7.7°C Sitting at an elevation of around 2,500 meters, Abha is one of the highest places in the country. With its natural elevation, Abha enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year. Even during the height of winter, the temperature rarely dips below zero, so tourists can enjoy the surrounding mountainscape that the city is famous for; except that this time, the crowds are thinner.

RIYADH’S FAVORITE WINTER ACTIVITIES When the weather goes low, we go out! In recent years, the capital has turned into one giant gym and playground for adventurers and wanderers. For those wanting to get active, Riyadh quickly turning into a destination best explored with the windows rolled down or none at all.
1. The Rise of Free Wheeling Vagabonds: Cycling It’s cycling season! And now more than ever, we’re seeing riders in just about every pocket of the city. From gravel roads to historic backstreets, here are some of the best routes around the Kingdom to get you started. AD DIRIYAH With its many winding paths and burrows, with a few turns that would connect you to the different Wadis place for cycling groups.
DIPLOMATIC QUARTER Within its 14-kilometer parameter, DQ is an ideal destination for beginners and intermediate cyclists alike. It also features a trail alongside its suburban streets for those wanting to break in their mountain bikes.
WADI HANIFAH Featuring a 120-kilometer stretch of oasis, this route follows the middle of Riyadh’s sprawling cityscape.

TAKE A CULTURAL SHORTCUT THROUGH AD DIRIYAH A walk through history Rich in history, architecture, and winding burrows and rows of palm trees that give much to be explored, Diriyah combines both modernity with its past to create an intoxicating atmosphere that will have visitors craving to explore its corners.

Catch a glimpse of the past Diriyah is home to At-Turaif, which is a UNESCO World Visit the Salwa Palace at the At-Turaif district, built in distinctive Najdi architectural style and embark on a spectacular walk through Saudi’s most historic landscapes in search of the richest stories of the Saud family. QUICKFIRE SESSION An Interview with Adventure Extraordinaire Mashael Alsolai the amount of geological and biological diversity is astounding—perhaps even overwhelming. With so many options, who better to provide the best advice than one of the Kingdom’s top adventurers: Mashael Alsolai, founder of Shamal Adventures. Fortunately, we had the opportunity to ask her all the questions you need the answers to:
How did you get into adventuring? Since I was young, I have always had a passion for outdoor activities and adventures. As I grew up, I started joining a few family trips on a casual basis. With time, I realized that it really interests me and I started seeking these activities during my free time.
What was your most memorable adventure, and with who? Once, my husband and I were in the Tabuk region Pressed for time, we had two options: take the normal road, which would take 2.5 hours, or take a shortcut through a rough sandy desert. Though it is advised to take at least two vehicles to cross areas like this (since phone signals are unavailable), we embarked with only one car. We had to follow a compass and the road was around 50km of cross-country adventure with few obstacles throughout, yet we eventually made it on time.

What is your most striking camping experience? Honestly, many adventures are memorable. However, one that strikes my attention was my trip to Al Gharameel in AlUla where I witnessed the clearest sky and stars i have ever seen.
What is your favorite destination you have traveled to? The future city, NEOM. It is very rich in its natural resources where it combines both sea and desert, which are both beautiful. The landscapes and valleys are breathtaking. It is a neverending natural treasure.
you ever camped and with who? In Saudi, it was Harrat Alshaggah, near Umluj in Tabuk with a couple of my friends.
If you could camp anywhere, where would it be? That would be on a sandy island named Um Al Malik, near Umluj, Red Sea.
What favorite camp site would you recommend to anyone? Al Sultaniya, Haql.
What’s the most unique local camping experience? Abha, in between the valleys and waterfalls.
What about the best hike? Wadi Al Disah, Tabuk
Best adventure overall? Rappelling, diving, and paragliding, all in Saudi Arabia.
Favorite camping activity? Cooking, stargazing, and watching the moon.

How easy is it to approach random people/fellow campers/locals while camping? Very easy, you’ll feel the connection and synergy straightaway.
What advice do you have for any inexperienced campers? Always choose your camping spot before sunset and be aware of your surroundings. Also, make sure you leave the place as it was—or better.
What’s the one thing that anyone camping in Saudi should know? Ensure you get the right permit before you camp from the nearest center around you.

European dairy cream, especially French cream, enhances the flavor of all preparations. It has an unparalleled melt in the mouth, and its softness on the palate is uniquely smoothing and comforting. No matter the level of the cooking skills, anyone can incorporate French cream to a range of dishes, from savoury to sweet.
Najl a S h am i r i is a Pastry Chef from Jeddah. She chose to feature an infused cream, putting together a sticky date cake with salted caramel. Her use of infused Arabic coffee cream brought a unique lightness to the pastry.

STICKY DATES CAKES 250g Dates, seeded, chopped
10g Vanilla extract
6g Baking soda 350ml Boiling Water
2 Eggs 260g All-purpose flour
125g Softened Butter 95g Light brown sugar, Demerara
1.5g Salt 6g Baking Powder
Preheat deck oven to 180° C. Grease and flour baking pan. Soak dates and baking soda in boiling water (leave for 20 min). In a mixing bowl with whisk attachment, mix sugar, vanilla and butter until pale and creamy. Add eggs one at a time. Sift dry ingredients and add them gradually with dates mix. Don’t over mix. Bake for 30 min. Let it cool down for 10 min. Then move to cooling rack. Glaze with caramel.
90g Sugar 400g Heavy Cream
100g Arabic Coffee powder 900g Heavy Cream
2 Vanilla beans Pods 12g Gelatin
600g Mascarpone cheese
In a pot, add 400g cream, sugar, vanilla and coffee powder. Let it simmer and remove after 30 min. Strain and add the gelatin. Add the rest of the cream and mascarpone cheese. Use hand blender to mix. Cool down in chiller for at least 4 hours. Using the whisk attachment, mix the cream until soft peak when ready to use.

5g Sea salt 625g Sugar
200ml Water
Boil water and sugar in a pot until crystalized. Add pistachio and continue stirring until caramelized (around 20 min). Remove from heat and add butter. Spread in a silicon mate. After cooling down keep in an air tide container, room temp.
460g Glucose 800g Sugar
20g Salt 800ml Cream
190g Butter
Melt glucose, then add sugar over 4 times. Add 1/4 sugar and caramelize then take out of the heat and add another 1/4 of sugar. Put back into heat and repeat until you get caramel color. Then add butter and stir slowly. Boil cream and salt. Add to caramel. Cool down and put in squeeze bottle.

Most rainfall usually falls in the Center and Southwest, in the area of the Asir Mountains. In most parts of the country, Summer arrives with an increase in heat.
