King Salman bin Abdulaziz
A LEGACY OF SERVITUDE
It is hard to pen the life of a man. Attempting to capture the true essence of a person beyond the facts, figures and milestones in a few good lines never does suffice. The task becomes even more daunting for a beloved figure of modern history and father of a nation. In the passing of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, the Kingdom lost a revered leader and a true visionary of peace in the region. We at Destination send our heartfelt condolences to the entire nation. We believe that his passing should be marked by the adoration he has so rightfully earned from his people and the world. Under his reign, we became a Saudi Arabia that’s brimming with cultural vitality, economic prosperity and diversity and a nation of fortitude. In his subtle conviction, he championed women and initiated an open dialogue among religions, races and nations. King Abdullah, as a man of faith and leader of the state, made true to his vow to serve God Almighty, his country and people. We at Destination find refuge in knowing that as our history turns to a new chapter, it does so with a righteous and wise leader at its helm. We pledge our allegiance and offer our prayers of support for King Salman bin Abdulaziz, Custodian of the two Holy Mosques, Crown Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz, and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef. In King Salman's ascension to the throne, we envision a stable and brighter future for Saudi Arabia. We are at one with the nation in praying for Allah’s help in letting him continue the legacy of servitude. We echo and follow his footsteps— “to remain, with God’s strength, attached to the straight path that this state has walked since its establishment."

THE VISIONARY KING ABDULLAH The world is mourning the loss of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. Although the King has passed away, his legacy remains. By Sohila El Saadany
POLITICS
King Abdullah’s political success is carved in history. His political endeavors have cemented Saudi Arabia’s important world status. • His call for interfaith dialogue resulted in the convention of the World Conference on Dialogue in Madrid and a United Nations conference on Dialogue in 2008. He also established the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Program for Enhancing the Culture of Dialogue and Peace and was awarded with the UNESCO Gold Medal for his efforts. • He held a number of important international summits and meetings in the Kingdom like the Jeddah Energy Summit in 2008, the third OPEC Summit of Heads of State and the 19th Arab League Summit in 2007. • Women empowerment was one of the major highlights of the King’s political reforms. In his era, women participated in the Olympics, held positions such as prime minister and 30 women are now part of the Shura Council. He has also granted women the right to vote and run as candidates in municipal elections. 8

EDUCATION
Education was one of the leading concerns of the King for the sake of future generations. The educational sector makes up one-fourth of the total budget allocations. It amounts to SR 210 billion. • During his time, the Kingdom’s universities increased to 28 government universities and five private ones. He had also ordered the establishing of three new universities in north Jeddah, Bisha and Hafar Al Batin. The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Thuwal was a major milestone in the Kingdom’s educational plan. • The King also initiated the foreign scholarship program in 2005. More than 200,000 Saudis were sent to study abroad. An open university, which focuses on e-education and distant education has also been constructed. • Because the Qur’an should be one of the main focuses of education, the King issued a package that included SR 300 million for Islamic Dawa offices and SR 200 million for Qur’an memorization organizations.
HEALTH CARE
Sources/ forbes.com • alarabiya.net • saudigazette.com • ourallegiancetokhadimalharamin.com • ksu.edu.sa • arabnews.com • kaahe.org
The King was always adamant to present the best health care for citizens. This sector was issued a huge part of the government funds with almost SR 86.5 billion spent yearly. • The King ordered setting up a number of medical cities including King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh, King Abdullah Medical City in Makkah, King Faisal Medical City in Abha, Prince Muhammad Medical City in Sakaka and King Khaled Medical City in Dammam. Eleven new private hospitals and 32 public ones were built under his supervision.
HUMANITARIAN
His humanitarian projects were always a priority to him as he aimed at bettering the lives of those in need. • He issued a decree increasing annual allocations for charitable organizations by 50 percent to reach SR 450 million. • The World Food Program awarded the King with the Champion in the Battle Against Hunger prize for his efforts and support in supplying food to the less fortunate.
ECONOMICS
King Abdullah’s economic achievements, among others, have earned him 11th place on Forbes Most Powerful People list in 2014. • A notable achievement is the expansion of the Grand Mosque in Makkah to reach a capacity of 2.5 million worshippers. The project cost SR 80 billion. • He succeeded in making Saudi Arabia a member of the World Trade Organization in 2005. • The King gave top priority to meet the housing requirements of citizens with allocation of SR 250 billion to construct 500,000 new housing units all over the Kingdom. • Establishment of King Abdullah Economic City, King Abdullah Financial Center, the Jazan Economic City and the City of Knowledge.
TECHNOLOGY
He implemented several technologically advanced projects to assure that the Kingdom stays up to date with the fast changing technologies of every day. • In 2012, he successfully made Saudi Arabia one of the 21 nations with all the components of e-readiness. The nation now offers effective electronic services for public and private sectors. • He supervised the establishment of technologically developed transportation projects such as the Haramain High-Speed Railway linking Makkah and Madinah. The government has awarded contracts worth $22.5 billion to carry out the Riyadh metro network as well. • Because of his great interest in technological advancements, the King oversaw the founding of the King Abdullah Institute for NANO techonology.
The nation has lost a great leader, may he rest in peace. He will live forever in the hearts of the citizens and through the visionary changes he has brought upon the Kingdom.

BUSINESS
FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD Saving for Children The concept is simple:
The power of compounding OR Time Value of Money. This means that time has a powerful impact on the accumulation of money regardless of the growth rate (rate of return) it is invested at.
The most common reply was: After graduation (from college). That was alarming. I started saving for my children as soon as they were born. If you think this is crazy early, let me tell you, the savings can barely cover their college education!
For compounding to work, you need to: 1. Start now 2. Invest regularly 3. Be patient
Just to clarify, it is never too early to start saving, even for your unborn children. The reason behind this can be explained both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Secondly, investing your savings regularly at a constant (or almost constant) rate helps grow the capital and combat inflation. Inflation is the sustained increase in the general prices of good, services. As inflation rises, every Riyal you own buys a smaller percentage of a
good or service. When inflation goes up, the purchasing power of your money declines. For example: If the inflation rate is 2 percent annually, then a SR 10 item will cost $1.20 in a year. After inflation your Riyal can’t buy the same item at the same price. SMALL TIPS TO HELP YOU WITH KIDS’ MONEY HABITS • Talk to your children about money. • Play cashier games. • Depending on their age let them join you on grocery or shopping trips. Compare prices and keep receipts to go over at home. • Always keep a safebox for each child at home. • Reward them for good deeds. • Visit websites and YouTube videos on the topic. The Federal Reserve Bank education arm offers great learning content on its website. Use it! • Talk to them about the less fortunate and underprivileged people worldwide. Explain to them how blessed they are to have a home, clothes, food and education. Learning to appreciate does 50 percent of the job. The rest they will learn as they grow. Lateefa Alwaalan Brewing Success
By Ayesha Islam
Lateefa Alwaalan knows how to brew a good cup of Arabic coffee. And it all has to do with a contraption that takes the labor out of coffee-making. The young entrepreneur and Saudi Creative Business Cup winner launched Yatooq and created the first Arabic coffee machine that significantly reduces the time it takes to traditionally brew coffee. All Saudi coffee lovers can relate to the passion drinking a good cup of “gahwa,” the roasted Arabic coffee that is slowly brewed then boiled with cardamom and ginger that gives a perfect blend of a rich, aromatic flavor. 20 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2015
Whether it is with family and friends, all-nighters during exams, or to enjoy that late wedding at 3 a.m. – it is the perfect cup of sheer goodness paired with dates. Lateefa Alwaalan’s shared passion for this coffee drove her to establish Yatooq in 2012. She began by introducing a line of different coffee beans and then unveiled the groundbreaking Arabic coffee machine that dramatically reduces the typical half-hour preparation time. But her background hasn’t always been linked to business – she completed her Bachelor’s Degree in computer science
LATEEFA ALWAALAN AT A GLANCE • Founder of Yatooq, a coffee production enterprise. • Winner of Saudi Creative Business Cup. • Bachelor's Degree holder in computer science from King Saud University. • MBA graduate at the University of Washington, Foster School of Business. • Yatooq sold 2,000 coffee machines during first week of production. • 40 percent of Yatooq’s production is exported.
from King Saud University, then went on to working in the IT department in the banking and telecommunications industry. The entrepreneur gene that she inherited from her family was calling.
STAFF PHOTO/MOHMMED DEGHAISHM
Who would have thought that a business neophyte could come up with a smarter way to make Arabic coffee. Well, Lateefa Alwaalan did, and it could revolutionize the brewing industry.
“I wanted to be in the trades business since I was little,” Alwaalan said. “Sometimes kids pretend to be moms or selling things in a grocery store but I would pretend to be a tradesman.” Her father runs a pharmaceutical company and the past generations have been in food services. She recalls: “The conversations between my uncles and father at the dinner table would always be about business. I grew up in that environment.”
WITHOUT MY FAMILY’S SUPPORT I WOULD NOT BE WHERE I AM TODAY – MY FATHER IS MY BIGGEST ADVISOR. —Lateefa Alwaalan
That is when she decided to pursue her childhood dream and left her IT job to join the MBA program at the University of Washington at the Foster School of Business with an interest in technology management and commercialization. To polish her skills, she also enrolled in the entrepreneurship certificate program while the idea for Yatooq was already taking root.
STAFF PHOTO/ARABIC COFFEE CUP: YASMIN OUF
After a year and a half, she came back to Riyadh armed with her MBA but was immediately offered a job in the family pharmaceutical business. “I was the first female in a 100 percent male environment focusing on small areas in the south of Riyadh,” she said. “We serviced seven to eight cities between 25 branches.” It wasn’t long before she got a good grasp of the business and moved her way up to the position of general manager, while simultaneously launching Yatooq.
DESTINATIONRYD.COM 21
Yatooq coffee can be found in supermarkets across Riyadh and can also be ordered online.
In 2013, Alwaalan gave her full-time commitment to Yatooq while monitoring the pharmaceutical company. The young entrepreneur is happy with the success of Yatooq as it “revolutionized the coffee industry – we were the first to develop this technology in Saudi Arabia and now 40 percent of our production is exported.” The business is flourishing and within one week of production, 2,000 coffee machines were sold but “it doesn’t mean that it came easily or that it has been a smooth ride. It has been challenging and now we have reached a really good milestone.” 22 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2015
So what drives Alwaalan to continue pushing for better results? “I want to continue to contribute in the field of research and development and create solutions for consumers that have a competitive advantage in the global market.” Now that technology is moving faster than anything else, differences do arise in the business world as compared to when Alwaalan’s father started up his pharmaceutical company. “I think the ABCs of business are still the same – you need financing, customers and suppliers but now it’s more about where you want to be and personally I am taking
more of a risk than what my family does.” What brings these innovative ideas into creation entails a much bigger job – you are the producer versus the one who just imports and resells the product. Alwaalan has a key piece of advice for budding entrepreneurs: “If you are able to find something that when you wake up in the morning you look forward to working – it is a blessing and you should pursue that.” Web: yatooq.com

THE UNIQUE SHAPE OF SAUDI ADVERTISING By Paul Springer
26 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2015
A Brief History of Saudi Advertising
The nuances of Saudi Arabia’s advertising industry today still reflect how it first established in the region. The Kingdom’s entrepreneurial spirit was evident in the mid-20th century, when trades people positioned their goods and advertising messages for pilgrims along the road to Makkah. However, communications in the form of press and television advertising started much later.
COURTESY PHOTO
Anyone traveling through Saudi city centers for the first time is always struck by the vast array of billboards. From digital skyscrapers to the bridges, “megacoms” (backlit billboards) and “mupis” (billboards mounted on long poles), there are more billboards per mile along city highways than anywhere else in the world. Brands spend proportionately more on outdoor and mall advertising in Saudi Arabia than in other Middle Eastern country. The Kingdom’s billboard landscape is therefore like no other.
Press
In 1975 Tihama, a Saudi advertising and PR group, struck the first deal for national press to carry brand commercials. Newspapers including Arab News and the magazine Asharq Al Awsat pioneered the way for print advertising. Such was their success that the demand for ad-supported publications grew — from brands keen to advertise; from advertisers directly and from consumers buying more specialist publications. Global brands were so eager to enter into Saudi’s economy that the government encouraged the creation of more advert-carrying publications. This drive to expand advertising in the 1980s extended to outdoor advertising, and the uninhibited growth of print and outdoor media encouraged more major brands to the territory.
Broadcast
In contrast, television and radio advertising developed at a slower pace. Prince Faisal first proposed Saudi Arabia’s first national television station in 1965 but public service advertising aside, it wasn’t until 1986 that the first privately sponsored Saudimade commercial was aired (for Procter & Gamble’s Tide). By then viewers were accessing channels from other GCC countries and were already familiar with the wit and style of pan-Arabic commercials. There is another reason why Saudi’s TV commercials look generically Arabic; Saudis expenditures on luxury goods was so high that it became a focus for multinational brands, who encouraged their existing advertising networks to set up in the region.
1986 Tide Phootage
Today, most major international advertising agencies including Ogilvy Memec, BBDO and Leo Burnett, run offices in major Saudi cities. Alongside this, producers such as Procter & Gamble and Unilever set up graduate training programmes for local staff, and so developed the first generation of the pioneering communicators who, in turn, went on to instigate their own Saudispecific communications firms such as such as 3-Points, Fullstop and Focus Advertising – creators of Saudia’s famous charging horse.

The Future’s Bright for Saudi Advertising Today local and multinational agencies coexist with a new breed of specialist online advertiser. Young Saudis have real opportunity to make a name for themselves. Some already have – U-Turn, the multichannel online platform, has over 2 million subscribers and award-winning content while 77 Media creates social networks and conversations around world-leading cosmetics and pharma brands. The region boasts its own specialist Coms Uni – The Jeddah College of Advertising, to produce the next generation of media talent. So the future’s bright for advertising in Saudi.

MARWAH AL MUGAIT 30 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2015

Destination Riyadh gets intimate with the city’s most promising Saudi artists as they open the doors to their studios for the very time.
By Jou Pabalate and Johara Al Mogbel
Marwah Al Mugait has established herself as one of Riyadh’s conceptual artists. She believes in beautiful mistakes and is guided with a never-ending mission to make the unseen, seen. Al Mugait’s journey as a photographer started in 1999 with her very first analog camera, considering it a hobby more than anything else. The 33-year-old began to look into photography as an art medium during a trip to Prague, through an unlikely subject — door handles. “I didn’t realize it then but I do know, as weird as it sounds, my first artful inspiration came from door handles,” she laughs, “It was the point when my eyes started to gravitate towards seeing and capturing things from a different perspective.” Although her interest was leaning towards photography, Al Mugait stuck with studying Business Administration as an undergraduate.
Technically, she is a self-taught photographer. Avant Garde Arabia went viral on the day she uploaded it on Facebook. It consisted of images depicting a woman in different traditional Arab garments, some overlaid with Arabic calligraphy. Much to her surprise, Avant Garde Arabia went on to be exhibited at Art Abu Dhabi in 2012 and then at Brunel University, London. Following this surge of creativity, she earned a Master’s Degree in photojournalism from the University of Westminster. The experience taught Al Mugait to capture meaningful narratives rendered in images. She produced documentaries, one of which, the Mood Diary, captured the plight of a Saudi woman with bi-polar disorder. Today, Al Mugait is working on a new series, a hush-hush project entitled “Sigh”, and it is set to debut at the Naila Art Gallery in March.

AYMAN ZEDANI At 30 years old, Ayman Zedani is a pioneer of experimental contemporary art in Riyadh.
COURTESY PHOTO
Zedani spent his childhood moving around Saudi Arabia as a result of his father’s job. The family finally settled in Riyadh 16 years ago. He had initially wanted to study art after high school but pursued a degree in pharmaceutical science.
32 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2015
“In a way, I’m glad I didn’t study arts and decided to get my intake from different sources and views,” he said. “And my scientific background has played a major role in how I am as an artist. At the end of the day, I care more about the process; I can stay in my studio, my lab, for hours just trying out different things. Sometimes they work out, sometimes they don’t and I’m fine with that.” So far, Zedani has been dabbling with a variety of mediums. He used solar prints, ambrotype, tintype photography and, most recently, Bio-Art and 3D printing in his creations. Zedani admits that there are some challenges in using his creative methodology and being a contemporary artist in Riyadh.
Majority of the audience (in Riyadh) believe that art to be art, it has to be beautiful. And then there’s also the negative effect of commercialism on the art scene, people being more interested in the question, ‘How much money can we make out of this?’ I know that there are a lot of artists who have tremendous talent and vision but are laying low. Focusing on business and setting a singular view of success in the art community can discourage the next generation from ever breaking out of their cocoons or worse, abandoning their own ideas and imitating others instead because they’re being told that, that is what works, it’s what sells. — Ayman Zedani

NOORAH KAREEM Noorah Kareem never planned to become an artist. It kind of just happened. After her art teacher nominated her for a Mawhiba summer program, she was convinced that it could be something she loved to do. At 26, she’s still exploring the endless possibilities of the field she’d adopted. Graffiti, children’s book illustrations, canvases, sculptures. There’s very little she hasn’t tried. And if Kareem’s art can be explained in one word, we’d say that it is happy. There’s a joy that looking at her work invokes. And it seems as if the Saudi art scene agrees, as Kareem’s name and work has been popping up positively everywhere, Riyadh, happily, has been treating her well, with opportunities emerging everywhere. 34 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2015
My favorite bit in the artistic process is the natural high I get while making something. It's like I go completely into the zone. — Noorah Kareem
Riyadh's been good to me. It gave me so many doors and opportunities to be out there. — Noorah Kareem
Kareem’s creative process mostly entails collecting ideas, then breaking them down and rearranging them into something new and unexpected. She dreams of being able to collect fragments of visions and ideas, and having the ability to assemble them together into artworks that speak not only of how she feels, but also convey an idea worth spreading. MCF boards and a collage help with that, and she tacks up sketches and words that she finds inspiring to use as a visual board for her projects.

Alāan Artspace
By Abeer Arjani
A number of galleries have made a unique name for themselves in supporting and shaping the art scene in Saudi Arabia with artists showcasing at international art fairs and galleries. It’s safe to say that galleries’ focus on diverse artwork and supporting local talent is one of the few major factors in pushing forward the local artists into a more regional and international presence. “We are at the beginning of a movement, suggesting perhaps that the center of contemporary Saudi art might be shifting just a little from Jeddah and towards the middle of the country,” said Naema Alsudairy, founding director of Alāan Artspace.

After almost six years in a tiny room on an offshore oil field near Kuwait working a maintenance job, Essam Al Ghamdi had an epiphany. “Let me tell you, if there’s a time to rethink life choices, it’s when you’re in a shoebox in the middle of the ocean,” Al Ghamdi said. “I quickly realized that I wasn’t having very much fun doing something that doesn’t interest me, something that doesn’t challenge me or excite me. In my spare time – and trust me, I had plenty of it – I wrote a few albums and worked on a few games until I finally built up the confidence to quit my job to pursue my passions.” His music work is done during Batman hours.
said. “And since I don’t play a particular genre, I didn’t want to box myself within the naming confines of a particular genre like electro or trip-hop.” And it works. It’s hard to pinpoint what genre Al Ghamdi’s music really is, but that’s part of the fun of listening to it. And the thought of an adorable kitten dressed in James Bond attire dropping beats is certainly a compelling one. Colleague Ahmed Abdelsamea described Al Ghamdi as a true professional.
And like all good superheroes, he picked a catchy moniker to front his music. Agent Whiskers rolls off the tongue quite nicely.
“Essam always knows what to do with music,” Abdelsamea said. “When I ask him about music with a certain feeling or experience, he comes with a really interesting initial draft where I can give him feedback and he tunes it. He is really fast in editing the music.”
“The way I see it, expressing myself through art should be raw, reckless and fun,” he
His defining moment was in his teens. Growing up in Virginia, during the ’90s
he found himself succumbing to the teen angst movement of nu-metal bands, namely Korn. Being the easily influenced lads they were, Al Ghamdi, now 29 years old, and his friends vowed to create the loudest, most angst-ridden nu-metal band the world had ever seen. “We were three ambitious and surprisingly thorough little rockers,” he said. “We didn’t even have instruments and we’d already decided who was playing what. On top of all that, we decided that the band would contain five members despite the fact that we were missing two people. True forward-thinkers, we were.“ Over the next decade he taught himself guitar and drums, played in numerous bands in live shows around the world, and participated in recording sessions. By 2011, Agent Whiskers was born.

His inspirations?
“Musically speaking, I’d say mostly Muse and Radiohead,” Al Ghamdi said. “Muse’s melodic style spoke to me at a time when I was developing my sound on guitar so it’s almost ingrained within my musical DNA. Radiohead taught me to think outside the box and not to rely on the same time signatures and tempos so often.”
To date, he’s composed music for six video games, three of which are available on the App Store and Google Play Store. He was also nominated for his work on Atomic+ at the 2013 Indie Prize Awards in Amsterdam. But Al Ghamdi doesn’t plan on staying away from dabbling in his passion on a full time basis for long.
“I see myself eventually taking music up full-time. There’s no shortage of melodies in my head and I still haven’t had my reggae phase. I’m going to be making music for a long time. Whether it remains a side career or becomes my life, I’m going where my music takes me.”
‘Radiohead taught me to think outside the box.’

The Best French Toast in Riyadh By Nora Al Saiari
The absolute origin of French toast is unclear, as there are two stories to which this scrumptious dish can be traced.
Story 1
French toast is true to be French, where poor French families used to take their hard stale bread that is quick to be lost hence the name “pain perdu,” which translates to “lost bread” and soak it in eggs, milk and honey, to make of it this soft and chewable dessert so nothing would be lost nor gone to waste.
Story 2
The second story traces French toast to Joseph French, an innkeeper in New York who supposedly created this dish in the 18th century. Consequently it was confused with France the country merely because erroneously he didn’t add an S and an apostrophe after his name in the title of his newly invented dish.

YOU’VE GOT TO TRY Al Mawayed Boufeyah – The Hole in the Wall By Faris Al Yahya
The local eateries are usually dingy, old relics of ’70s Riyadh, and they open right after Fajr prayer, until Duhur. One of these best-known and most traditional boufeyahs is Al Mawayed. Despite the fact that they removed the original name and simply replaced it with a simple “Boufeyah,” it’s still known by its famous name. Their specialty is sandwiches made out of fresh samooli bread, the most
famous of which are the liver, and their shakshouka sandwiches. The liver sandwich was great, but the shakshouka was a clear winner. They're so famous and crowded to the point where they had to open another bigger branch at the same street near Souk Taibah in Olayah Street. It’s that good.
The average price of their sandwiches is about SR 4-5 and extra cream cheese is for an additional riyal or two.
Conclusion? Try it. It’s worth braving the crowds.

HIPPIE MUM
IN THE CITY 64 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2015
By Hippie Mum
A British home-schooling mum to two girls: Little Miss Chatterbox, 4 and Little Miss Shy, almost 3. I have a confession to make. I’ve decided to come clean with you all. I feel we’ve built
a bit of a relationship and as we know, honesty is a must in all relationships. OK, here goes… (Deep breath)… MY NAME IS HIPPIE MUM AND I DO NOT OWN A TV! My children grew up in a TV-free house!
COURTESY PHOTO/GALLERYHIP - MEDIMANAGE
This way, I can easily decide and control the content that they are exposed to and the time allowed.
DID YOU KNOW…? • Watching TV leads to inactivity, which contributes to heart disease, obesity and diabetes, to name a few. • Watching TV can numb your child’s mind as it prevents your child from exercising initiative. • Kids who watch a lot of TV have trouble paying attention to teachers because they are accustomed to the fast-paced visual stimulation on TV.
The most common question I get asked is a simple …WHY NOT? Well, the short answer is that I don’t need one. I feel that TV is increasingly used as a distraction or a baby-sitting tool for children. Yes, there are some benefits to it and sure, kids can learn something from it, but I guarantee that they will learn far more from actual hands-on activities or from books. TV is a very passive way for children to be fed
ideas. It can inhibit their creativity and thought patterns. It is also very addictive for children and adults alike. Most people are so addicted that they can’t go half a day without switching the TV on. Young children have bundles of energy and their senses are ready to explore the world around them, but after a few years of slumping in front of a TV, they lose their natural instinct to explore and are
happy to just sit there and be fed information. And this is usually when parents start nagging their children to be active and help around the house, or go out and socialize. As with everything in life though, there needs to be a balance, especially in the world we live in now. Personally, I occasionally (maybe once a week) allow Little Miss Chatterbox and Little Miss Shy to watch a suitable cartoon on YouTube. This way, I can easily decide and control the content that they are exposed to and the time allowed.
Here are some of the most common questions I hear, and my answers. Isn’t that a bit extreme? Why can’t you just limit it instead of getting rid of it? This is where it can get tricky. If the TV is there, you may convince yourself to just put it on for 20 minutes for the kids while you take a shower. The next day, it becomes 30 minutes. The day after that, you convince yourself that allowing them to watch an hour’s worth of cartoons is OK as you have a headache. And it goes on and before you know it, your kids are watching TV at every given opportunity.
Don’t you get bored? Not at all. In fact, by having no TV, you can focus more on hobbies and you can discover new things. You actually regret all the time you wasted watching a box showing other people living their fictional lives, and start living your own. You get to play more with your children.
Have I done enough to convince you that you don’t need a TV? Not sure? Well, here’s a challenge. Why not give up TV for 30 days? It’s only a month. This little test will also show you if you or your kids are addicted to your TV, and who knows, it might just be enough to show you what you are missing.

'THE ROAD TO MAKKAH' THE STORY OF MUHAMMAD ASAD An autobiography of Muhammad Asad, "The Road to Makkah" tells a life story that sometimes sounds so farfetched as to befit a Hollywood movie. It’s an incredible story – and it’s all true. By Maryam Al Dabbagh
He became a journalist and traveled to the Middle East, writing as a foreign correspondent for several illustrious European newspapers about his travels and adventures throughout the region. He found that Islam’s tradition embraced both the rationalism his mind instinctively craved, and the deeper sense of spirituality and meaning yearned for by his heart, which he found lacking in the atheism of his European contemporaries. After much contemplation, he embraced Islam by 1926 and took the name of Muhammad Asad.

Born Leopold Weiss at the dawn of the 20th century in what was then the AstroHungarian Empire, this descendant of a long line of Jewish rabbis undertook religious studies at a very young age, studying the Talmud and the Old Testament and becoming proficient in Hebrew and Aramaic before he became disillusioned with religion as a young man, wandering aimlessly around 1920s Europe.
Through a chance meeting at a Madinah library with then-Prince Faisal of Saudi Arabia, he was introduced to King Abdulaziz, whom he accompanied for several years – and even undertook a secret mission for him. Traveling to Libya in 1930, he met the Lion of the Desert himself, Umar Al Mukhtar, who was conducting his brave opposition to the Italian colonizers of Libya. He also met Muhammad Iqbal, Pakistan’s great philosopher, and collaborated with him on the vision of a truly Islamic state. Although undoubtedly exciting, the main appeal of “The Road to Makkah” does not lie in its tales of swashbuckling adventures. Rather, it is the thoughtful contemplation on a life well lived, and a philosophy beautifully crafted, that is the true value of this book. All in all, this book tells the truly epic tale of the journey of a heart and mind. In a world where East and West still view each other with suspicion, the life of a man whose identity comprised of equal parts Muslim and Jew, Arab and European will never cease to be a shining source of inspiration.
Time Revelations By Sohila El Saadany
Stephen Hawking once said, “Time evolved into a personal concept, depending on the observer who is measuring it.” So what does your measurement of time reveal about you? This is not one of those cliché time management pieces; this is a very brief account on how your utilization of time makes you appear.
Responsibility Time can be used as an initial measurement of how responsible you are.
Impulse Taking the time to think things through or rushing into them are constant battles.
Procrastination
Time can also be a very strong indicator of whether you are an active person or you are more of a procrastinator.
Time is a measure of everything. How you use it directly reflects and affects you, so try to use it wisely and remember,
Making sure you turn up at your appointments on time and delivering your tasks according to deadlines is bound to show whether you respect the concept of time or not. The amount of time you take making a decision no matter how small or trivial is a reflection of your own personality as well. Putting off duties on account of more time and then finishing them off just before deadline is never a wise decision. And even though everyone seems to do that at one time or another, it is still an indication of procrastinator.
Time is what we want most, but what we use worst. — William Penn

WITH YOUR CHILD Stories are powerful means of conveying messages to children; they are excellent tools of healthy parenting. By Dawood Vaid
Here are some stories that can be used: 1. From Surat Al Kahf, the story of the man with two gardens (Moral: Don’t be greedy and conceited). 2. Story of Prophet Musa and Khidr (Moral: Allah gives wisdom to whom He wills). 3. Story of Surat Al Fil (Moral: Allah has power over all things no matter how strong they appear).
Try to stay off TV and video games The effects of reading are more beneficial than those of cartoons and soaps, but controlled TV can be used to explore certain things or initiate curiosity in your child. 1. You can allow them to
watch a cartoon from a different culture, that of Tokyo for example, and then ask them to point out the differences between his/ her culture and the other, as in the houses shown or the languages spoken. 2. Get a book that gives
information about the respective cartoon. This way the child learns more and has more freedom of creativity. 68 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2015

READING
The stories in the Qur’an can be used to teach the children valuable lessons and morals.
Exploring realities of life through stories Children can understand issues like death, divorce and greed through stories. They can also learn about matters such as friendship by reading about the Prophet (PBUH) and Abu Bakr. Reading to your children can also help develop their language and speech.
Here are some tips. 1. Reading aloud to enhance vocabulary. Reading to your kids teaches them new words; it also enriches their abilities to express themselves.
2. Use the “five-finger-rule” Ask your children to open any page of a book to read. Every time they come across a word they do not know, they should hold up a finger. If they get to five fingers before they finish reading the page, the book is too hard.
3. Pick stories that develop curiosity, creativity Consider and imagination. reading the story of Isra’ and Mi’raj,
You will come the miraculous across a lot of night journey stories throughout of the Prophet (PBUH) the journey, and this will rejuvenate your child’s curiosity and imagination.
Read-a-thon: Making reading a daily practice
STAFF PHOTO/ YASMINE OUF
You can make reading together an evening task; you can reward him/her for every book he/she finishes. Getting a membership to a library or book club will help in planning a successful read-a-thon. It is preferable to discuss what your child has learned from reading. This will engage your child and develop a sense of morality in him/her. It will also enhance his/her sense of good listening. Reading aloud to your children can help them actualize the noble concept of obeying and acting upon sermons that call to goodness it will also help them get closer to Allah.
Finally, remember the precious Qur’anic concept of “We hear and we obey.” [Qur’an: Chapter 2, Verse 285].

Seychelles Islands are a haven for those who revere nature and desire relaxation. We at Destination magazine were lucky enough to experience the islands and witness their splendor first hand. By Sohila El Saadany
They are the most ancient mid-ocean islands in the world. They make up an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, northeast of Madagascar. We at Destination reached Mahe’, the main island, which is four hours from Dubai. The airport in Mahe’ immediately gave off an island vibe since it was small and covered with palm trees; it did indeed feel like a cozy island on its own. From there, we took a small plane to Praslin, the second largest island at Seychelles. The crystal clear water with little patches of land seemed unreal below us. Praslin’s airport is also quite tiny; it overlooks the shore, so stepping out of it made us long for a dive right there. On our way to the Raffles Praslin Seychelles hotel, we marveled at the island’s artistic milieu and noticed how utilities were basic since electricity is used at low voltage. You will not find air conditioning or bright lights. No jet skis are available in an effort to protect the marine environment. There are no sprawling shopping centers so a peaceful mindset can be maintained. After all we were 72 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2015
on a mission to escape the city’s hustle and bustle. We arrived at Raffles Praslin Seychelles hotel, which is part of the luxurious, and awardwinning Raffles Hotels and Resorts Company. The hotel contains 86 villas, all with private plunge pools. Thirty of those overlook the ocean, and we grabbed one of them. Each villa also contains an open-air balcony with sundeck beds and an outdoor sheltered pavilion with a day bed and dining table. The hotel offers a wide variety of facilities; one of the best is the Raffles Spa, which is the largest spa in Seychelles. It promises an enchanting

The hotel also showcases several restaurants, including Losean restaurant for contemporary Mediterranean cuisine. The Curieuse restaurant specializes in Pan Asian cuisine with Indian, Chinese and Tai food. There is also the Pool Restaurant and Bar, which is Praslin’s best destination for Creole

We picked the pool to have our lunch of Arabian food especially made for us, ranging from rice, vegetables to chicken and meat. After lunch, we went to the sublime Anse Lazio (Anse meaning bay), which is one of the top 10 beaches of the world, and is considered the king of Praslin beaches as it is ranked third of all the island beaches. Coco de mer fruit is the largest nut in the world.
We spent the next day in nature’s embrace as we took a guided excursion to Vallée de Mai, the nature park reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our tour guide was a friendly local who has been a guide for 25 years. She told us she could not imagine doing anything else other than helping people discover the wonders of her country. After seeing this forest we completely understood
her point of view. The forest comes right out of a movie set, with leaves as tall as a people, trees that appear to reach the sky, and sounds of birds chirping. It is also home to the coco de mer fruit, which is the bearer of the largest nut in the world and is expensive. It holds the record for the largest fruit recorded at 42kg. Its mature seeds can weigh up to 17.6kg and are the world’s heaviest. Vallée de Mai includes five palm tree species that all grow together in the same place, a rare occurrence in itself; it also houses mango and cinnamon trees along with a rare type of orchid. Vallée de Mai shelters small- to medium-sized animals like the endangered black parrot, which is restricted to Praslin Island, the Seychelles tree frog, and the rare Seychelles sheathtailed bat. Curieuse Island, a little piece of heaven, is only a few minutes away from Praslin by ferry. Curieuse is the dwelling place of the Aldabra Giant tortoises, which live on the shore. We had the chance to feed them and take pictures. Whoever thinks they are silent animals is mistaken. They produced shrieks that sounded almost prehistoric. The fun on Curieuse Island continued as we played soccer with some of the locals there since one of the members of our group is a huge soccer fan and initiated a soccer match. On our last day we took the 15-minute ferry from Prasilin to La Digue Island, the third most inhabited

The Veuve Nature Reserve lies at the island’s interior. It is home to the rare black paradise flycatcher bird, of which there are only about 100 in existence. We also circled La Digue’s tallest peak of 300 meters, Belle Vue, which is in the central part of the island. One of our favorite events was biking through a vast vanilla plantation. Vanilla is one of La Digue’s economic resources and exports. The markets nearby sell intoxicating vanilla. One landmark on the island is the 19th Century French colonial-styled house once owned by the Hossen family from Mauritius. The house is now a museum open to public. The island is also known for manufacturing coconut oil and has one of the last working copra (dried coconut) mills that display the traditional method of extracting coconut oil. Visitors can purchase fresh oil.
there Coconuts are abundant on the island, but don’t get your coconut juice until you hit the beach because that’s where it is most deliciously served. Drinking it as you lie on the beach is also an added benefit since La Digue’s beaches are simply exquisite with strokes of blue and green enveloping everyone. The beaches have been venues for several wedding ceremonies. You may find a couple’s name carved into a granite rock nearby. Seychelles Islands are a true gift of nature making this traveling experience one to remember.

11 NATURAL PHENOMENA
THAT WILL MAKE YOU APPRECIATE THE BEAUTY
OF SAUDI ARABIA By Mohammed Mirza
Often what we see around Saudi Arabia is taken for granted. Sure, we may marvel at the beaches or the sand dunes, but for the most part, nature’s marvels all around the country tend to go unnoticed. Maybe that’s why there are so many natural phenomena across the country that are rarely witnessed or relatively unknown. 1. Flowering of the Iris at Tuwair
Growing in the desert of Tuwair, 160 kilometers north of Riyadh, the existence of the Iris flower in such a harsh environment flusters onlookers. In spring, these flowers bloom and the entire field is filled in colors of different shades of purple. Their delicate flowers open at mid-day, revealing their beautiful colored petals and speckled cream center.
3. Desert Flowers in the Eastern Province
Normally found in the sabkhas (salt flats) of the eastern desert, this phenomenon happens when shallow salt basins evaporate. In the process gypsum crystals form in a circular array of flat plates, giving the rock a shape similar to a rose blossom and thus the name desert rose. In the eastern desert most of these are found buried under the sand. 76 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2015
2. Wahba Crater – A Geologists’ Dream
Contrary to popular belief, the Wahba Crater was not formed due to a meteorite impact but rather an eruption from below. The eruption was caused by volcanic activity and thus this crater that measures a massive 2 kilometers in diameter was formed. What makes the place even more special is that its white base that is filled with white sodium phosphate crystals glints tantalizingly in the moonlight.
5. Wadi Rumah – A River in the Desert
Afsar Lake
4. Migratory Birds at Afsar Lake
Saudi Arabia is believed to host the migration of around 2 million birds every year. Birds in huge flocks migrate from wintering grounds in Africa to breeding grounds in Europe and Central Asia and vice versa, making it one of the biggest flyways in the world. A large portion of them can be spotted at the Afsar Lake in Al Ahsa region. Its not surprising that thousands of these birds do stop at this lake while making their long journey, considering it is one of the biggest lakes in the entire Arabian Peninsula.
One of Arabia’s longest river valleys, Wadi Rumah, stretches to about 600 kilometers in length. The valley arises near Madinah and heads northeast, and sinks beneath the sand dunes in the Qassim region. It then reappears on the other side of the desert where it is known as Wadi Al Batin and continues northeast and forms the western boundary of Kuwait, before finally emptying in the Arabian Gulf. The valley is believed to fill only three times every 100 years; the last time this phenomenon occured was in 2008.
6. Underwater World at Farasan Islands
The Red Sea has attracted divers from all around the world due to the amazing diversity that it has to offer. Despite soaring temperatures for much of the year, Farasan Islands, the coast of peninsular Arabia, display the best of what the mesmerizing Red Sea has to offer. Beneath the warm waters that surround Farasan Islands are magnificent landscapes, mountains of fish and corals that stretch for miles. No wonder it was celebrated diver Jacques Costeau’s favorite diving spot.
7. Al Lith Hot Springs – Nature’s Jacuzzi
A little gem of an oasis lies around 260 kilometers south of Jeddah close to the village of Al Lith. What makes it stand out though is that it is home to the country’s very own natural Jacuzzi. The temperature in the spring is heated to the temperature of bath water. It is believed that the warm temperature of the water is the result of benign underground volcanic activity. 8. Jabal Qara – Ali Baba’s Mysterious Den
This auburn-colored mountain contains a labyrinth of caves and caverns with little shafts on the top that let light pierce through, making the whole place look like the set of an Indiana Jones movie. Made from calcareous sandstone, marl, clay and sedimentary rocks, Jabal Qara sits at around 20 kilometers east of the city of Hofuf. The cave networks inside stretch for over 1,000 meters and close to the very end of it lies what locals call Ali Baba’s den — from the popular folktale Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves.
9. Snow In The Northwestern Desert
10. Singing Sand Dunes of Rub Al Khali
According to a legend, the whispers distract travelers and drag them into danger, singing through the sand dunes. From beneath footsteps and car wheels, a deep roaring comes from the sand, a sound similar to that of a low-flying airplane. The vibrations of grains of sand as they fall on top of each other are believed to be the cause of this phenomenon.

11. Wadi Al Jinn – Valley of the Jinns
Situated at around 30 kilometers northwest of Madinah, the Wadi Al Jinn is a mystifying valley where cars move uphill even when their engine is off. While some believe that the power of the “Jinns” is evident in the valley, others point out that the phenomenon is nothing but an optical illusion.

The extremely rare phenomenon happens in the northwest region of the country, close to the modern day city of Tabuk. The phenomenon last occurred in the winter of 2013, when the outskirts of Tabuk were blanketed in snow—a region that receives less than 5 inches of rainfall every year.

TAYMA OASIS The oasis of Tayma is situated on a flat basin on the western edge of the Nafud desert with a salt pan north of the settlement. Artifacts dating from the Middle Bronze Age to the Islamic period were discovered at the area. Carvings found there seem to link Arabian and Assyrian tribes. Hieroglyphic inscriptions in the area revealed evidence of a direct trade route connected to the Nile valley during the reign of Ramses III. The center of the city contains the architectural landmark Bir Haddaj or Haddaj Well. It dates to 6th century BC during

the Babel occupation. In the 5th century BC, Tayma was abandoned and the well had dried and was discarded. Years later, Sulaiman Al Ghunaim attempted to dig it again, but it wasn’t until 1953 that King Saud renovated it and turned it into an integral part of the area’s irrigation system. Tayma also encompasses a huge boulder named Al Naslaa. The slit in the middle of the boulder resulted in two huge rocks facing one another. The front of Al Naslaa shows engraved carvings of horses and camels thought to allude to caravans that have entered and left the area, hence highlighting Tayma’s importance to trade in the old days.
