Take a Leap of Creativity Well, well, would you look at that? 2016 is a leap year and we have an extra day this February! We only get this time bonus once every four years so we thought what better way to make your month more awesome than to make an issue that’ll give you a boost of creative positive energy. What we have come to discover is that Riyadh and the Kingdom as a whole is brimming with talented Saudis who are taking art to a new era. Take for example the amazing story of Semaphore Lab, a video game production company creating visually stunning games in their secret headquarters. We are also kicking off the Destination success playbook this month, starting with an article on how to help you and your team be more creative in the office. As always, we have packed Destination with just the right amount of relevant articles you’ll need to make your life in the city extra awesome. Foodies, don’t miss out on our Hinaini feature, a Najdi treat no Riyadhi can go without knowing. Trying to stick to your healthy living resolutions? Worry not, we have those covered too. Whenever we prepare an issue of Destination magazine, it always starts as a blank canvas. The stories you make for us to discover are the colors and strokes we use to paint every page.

BUSINESS

• REVIEW THE LIST BEFORE GOING This is to avoid over-buying items in the pantry and to assess real needs versus “wants.”

• TOP WAY DOWN

This is a macro approach to purchasing anything in life, and grocery is a good start. In simple words, have a budget first! “How much do you plan to spend?” Regardless of the amount, bear that number in mind before shopping and stick to it. If you manage to go below, well done!

FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD

Grocery Budgeting

• LEDGER

Whether you prefer apps (Mint, Wallet, Masareef, etc.) or simple pen and paper, do note it down.

• CUMULATIVE BUDGETING

That is, multiply your weekly grocery spending by four (weeks in a month). This makes it easier to budget up your monthly spending.

• SAVE FOR THE OCCASION

If you manage to save from your weekly grocery budget, you may use the balance to treat your family with a dinner out or invite friends over. Reward is an effective way to instill spending discipline.

• TAKE YOUR CHILD ON THAT TRIP Ask him or her to help you with itemizing the grocery cart and reviewing the receipt. This is a classic exercise for better child awareness about money.

Do you suffer from overspending syndrome? The remedy may begin with a simple exercise.

Grocery shopping is an extremely effective practice to instill better budgeting habits and self-restraint.

16 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2016

Here are some personal tips: • THE LIST Write your list two or three days before the grocery trip.

• PLAN YOUR WEEKLY MENU

This does not have to be on mealby-meal basis but think about the food offerings you wish to serve this week. Vegetables and fruit are mostly purchased fresh on a weekly basis. Over-refrigeration of these perishables can dissipate their nutritional value.

SEMAPHORE LABS Saudi Video Game Production Company By Johara Almogbel

What got you int game developing?

Emad Aldoghaither

Ahmad Jadallah

Emad Aldoghaither and Ahmed Jadallah, the talents behind Semaphore.

18 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2016

I started playing games at the age of 4 and developing games at the age of 5 (That's not a typo!) When you play a game like the classic Prince of Persia on good old DOS you start thinking about ways where you can build your own games and tell your own stories. The answer to that is of course that you need both the artistic and technical sides and so I started using programming languages such as Qbasic back at the time and art packages such as 3D Studio and worked

What’s the story behind the name Semaphore Lab? In computer science, a semaphore is a variable or abstract data type that is used for controlling access by multiple processes, to a common resource in a concurrent system such as a multiprogramming operating system. We felt that it's a technical term that would be intriguing to use the name of the company.

What games has Semaphore developed far? We released our flagship project, Unearthed: Trail of Ibn Battuta, back in 2013. Unearthed is an episodic third

person action adventure game set in modern day Middle East and tells the story of brother and sister team, Faris and Dania, who are on the trail of a mysterious secret relating to the famous Muslim explorer Ibn Battuta. The first episode was released on 10 platforms ranging from mobile to PC and even on the Playstation 3 as the region’s only locally developed action game on consoles and was released in 21 languages in order to spread our culture to the biggest audience possible. This includes languages like Japanese which means a lot to us since a lot of us grew up watching Japanese dubbed cartoons and playing Japanese games.

my way through several small prototypes. This became a passion/obsession that guided my education and interests and resulted in choosing this field as a career path despite not having games as an industry in this region. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 19

You used American voice actors in the English version of Unearthed. Was it hard to find Saudi or Arab ones that have the ability to speak English? We wanted to tap into AAA level voice talent for the game and so we worked with Troy Baker (The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite) and Tara Platt (Naruto, Charmed TV Series) and David Lodge (Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, World of Warcraft) to deliver the best performance possible and they did. For our upcoming episodes however, we will require the use of full performance capture where we capture the voice, facial, body and fingers of an actor and not just the voice. And so we are currently on the look for potential candidates who can ideally do both the Arabic and English performance and be available in Riyadh for the mocap process.

Any thoughts on the game developing scene in Saudi Arabia? We lack game development specific fields in the local universities and we work as much as we can to help in this regard. One important aspect is that we work with individuals who finished developing their games in order to port them and publish them on consoles like Xbox One, PS4 and PS such as a game called Gravity Error developed by 17-year old Faris Mohammed who was still in high school when he published it. We are currently bringing it to PS4. 20 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2016

You were part of GCON this year. Do you find it important to support female gamers and the female gaming community here? Of course, we work with many talented girls in both programming and art and know there is a big community of girl gamers that is as big as boys and we support this ever growing community.

What advice would you give to an aspiring game developer? Pick the genre you really love because that is what will keep you fuelled to work on your game day and night (and believe me, you will be working on it day and night). Decide if your skills are better suited for art or programming and then find other team members who can help you in the other field.

Finally, plan out your game in advance both in terms of the development and execution and in terms of marketing and how you are going to make money out of it. Plans change all the time and that's fine, but starting with a written plan will keep things in perspective for you. Web: semaphorelab.com semaphore lab

SUCCESS PLAYBOOK Five Tips to Make Creativity Stick in the Office By Jou Pabalate

1. Measuring Productivity Doesn’t Have to be Boring Visualizing how you use your time or making performance measurements tangible is one of the ways you can organize yourself while keeping a steady finger on creativity. It can be as simple as using blocks to divide your time into tangible bursts of productivity or having a coloring wall that your team paints on whenever a project task is done.

Where to Buy: Coloring Poster, Draft Store, SR 49

22 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2016

2. Your Office Can be a Pit of Despair or a Fountain of Creativity The design of your space plays a major role in making your team feel engaged or alienated. Open spaces where your staff can interact with each other is a good way to start. If there’s enough room for everybody, hot desks (office layout where anyone can set up shop anywhere) give your team the freedom to gravitate towards the space they feel most productive working from.

Helpful Tip

Encourage coworkers to set up their own cubicles or desks.

3. All Work and No Play Makes Abdullah a Dull Boy While it may seem counterintuitive especially for corporate firms, research has shown that giving your team time to play is a great way to get them thinking out of the box. You don’t need to turn your office into the next Google or Facebook HQ; simple things like writable walls and sheets can have them doodling and de-stressing.

Where to Buy: Chalk paint (Candles

& Chalk), Graffiti paper (Curio Art Supplies), Whiteboard post-it sheet (Jarir)

A babyfoot table can bring challenging spirit among employees

4. Positivity Begets Creativity and Productivity Develop a positive work culture where people are able to share their insights. Good vibes breed good rapport; good rapport builds teamwork = great outcomes. According to the Harvard Business Review, researches have shown that happy employees mean better bottom line results. And if you’re the employee, thinking happy thoughts is good for your mind, body and overall well-being so seriously, smile a little more.

5. Throw a Freaky Thursday Freaky Friday is a movie about a mom and daughter finding themselves magically switching bodies. During downtime days in the office why not schedule a switcheroo between roles and teams? People can draw lots on who they will be switching with —they get to see what it’s like on the other side, learn to appreciate each other’s roles, maybe even find creative ways to approach the tasks of their comrades. GCC Chapbook Round Up Our favorites from around the Khaleej. By Johara Almogbel

Sometimes making and appreciating art is hard. The cost of materials is high and demand from publishers never matches the velocity or magnitude of the output, which leaves what accessible art there is available very expensive and rare, and to be quite frank… pretentious.

Hence comes the need for chapbooks. The term is used to denote publications of up to about 40 pages, bound with some form of saddle stitch, or otherwise perfect bound, folded, or wrapped. Self-published, cheap, and most importantly, beautiful, chapbooks are the best platform available to artists in the region now.

Zayed Temash Do Not Go Up

A tiny bit smaller than an A3 paper, Momad’s latest The Kamin Stories chapbook is a sight to behold. Devoid of any text, the reader is left to imagine their own story as the titular character falls out of a box and ponders his state of existence. momad.ink

Equal parts creepy, eclectic and a little psychedelic, Zayed Almansoori’s Do Not Go up is a gem. Launched in MEFCC, it’s his debut comic and it’s so very promising. We’re surprised it hasn’t gotten mainstream as of yet, actually.

The mothership of all Middle Eastern chapbooks, Jaffat Elaqlam is hands down the best source for GCC chapbooks and anyone looking to make a chapbook. ROLL CREDITS Saudi Filmmakers Your must-watch list of the year. By Jou Pabalate

Early 2015, the Saudi Film Festival in Dammam served as a platform for emerging documentarists and before the year ended, we were in virtual standing ovation as Saudi shorts and movies shone during the Dubai International Film Festival. Here’s a look at the Saudi filmmakers to watch out for.

Mohammed Al Turki The Hollywood Top Cat

At 29, Al Turki is one of the few Saudi film producers who have broken into Hollywood. “99 Homes,” one of his most recent ventures as an executive producer, has received critical acclaim on top of getting a 91 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Al Turki also produced “Time out of Mind,” which premiered late last year and starred Richard Gere—the movie has also received much praise and favorable reviews. Outside of Hollywood, Al Turki is heavily involved in charitable works and joining discussions that bridge the gap between the east and the west, taking lead from his father, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Turki, a well-known Saudi philanthropist. 28 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2016

Ayman Jamal The Story Teller

We had interviewed Saudi director, Ayman Jamal early last year and since then, “Bilal,” the full feature CG animated feat he co-directed, has been screened in the Dubai International Film Festival. As expected, the film has been raved about for having amazing visual aesthetics – the animation is nothing short of top notch. Based on the real life story of Bilal Ibn Rabah, the $30 million movie is considered the first of its kind in the region. Jamal is currently working on another movie, now centering on the life of an influential musician during the Islamic era in Spain.

Gigi Hozimah The Thriller Seeker

Saudi director Gigi Hozimah is the first of her generation (that we’ve heard of) to create a horror film. The first glimpse of “They Sleep with Bears” confirms Hozimah’s inclination towards art and high concept films. It has the makings of a psychological thriller

that will have a cult following. The movie is produced under the independent company she co-founds, Look at the Wall Productions. Based on the latest update, “They Sleep with Bears” has been financed through crowdfunding site, Kickstarter.

Shahad Ameen A true blue Jeddahwi, Shahad Ameen has been creating a buzz in the regional and international film festival circuit when she debuted her short film entitled, “Eye and Mermaid.” The short won the Silver Palm during the Saudi Film Festival, premiered at the Dubai International Film Festival as well as the Toronto Film Festival. The plot is a fantasy drama and has a touch of magical realism as it tells the story of a girl who adores black pearls and how she discovers the sad ways her father uses to extract them from mermaids. Ameen, whose formal education centered on video production and screenwriting has struck the right notes with “Eye and Mermaid,” a full-length feature entitled “Scales” is being adapted from the story and is underdevelopment through the support of the Hazawi Fund by the Doha Film Institute. By Johara Almogbel

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I'm your average Saudi who was raised in a half Saudi, half Swiss household. I grew up on Star Wars and video games. I went through the standard public education system in the Eastern Province where I also work now. Like most artists in Saudi Arabia, I’m self-taught. Young, and alone in a time before the Internet, I realized if I was to make a video game, I would have to master all facets of the craft. Thus began a long journey of learning and self-discovery, going through drawing and painting, to 3D graphics, programming, to designing systems, video production, to music composition. 30 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2016

it as a friendly challenge to develop the game. The game was released and was a big hit. It was even featured on international channels. That motivated me to seriously consider game development. Another important factor was that development tools were becoming free, and publishing your game has never been easier thanks to the many mobile platforms.

How long did it take you to develop A Cat's Manor?

A Cat's Manor actually started out as quick prototype game called Alaal, developed in two months to learn the Unity3D game engine and C# language. The results and public reception was so good I continued to develop it further for another one year now.

Any thoughts on the indie game-developing scene in Saudi Arabia?

It has evolved dramatically since I began following it. We have some truly amazing talent here. The advent of social media helped many crawl out from under their rocks and connect with other. In the past year I've seen local communities being established and recognized internationally.

and connect with the public. Worth noting is there are more talented women in Saudi Arabia than men. Case in point, this year Bahrain hosted a GCC game jam. Did you know that female participation was the highest of any game jam in the world?

The emergence of public events in KSA (and MENA countries), and the constant support of established companies such as Sony help encourage the growth of the community by providing a platform to show their work DESTINATIONKSA.COM 31

What kind of publishers are you planning on approaching? Are there any national options available?

That's a very interesting question. The shift to digital downloads means that anyone can self publish, and the embrace of indie developers by major gaming platforms only asserts this. With that said, I have spoken to publishers, and a local one. There are several local, and international Arabic publishers who are scouting the scene for potential, homegrown hits. Back to my game, I would consider a publisher whose name would lend credibility to it, and help me market my game to a wider audience with little to no interference with the creative process. The MENA Games forum earlier this year helped me connect with potential publishers.

What are your future plans?

Beyond A Cat's Manor I have three games planned. I hope that A Cat's Manor turns out somewhat successful. It would greatly help establish my studio and my independence to pursue my dreams. In the mean time, I will be working on establishing a game development community in the Eastern Province. ARTIST’S CORNER MEET THIS MONTH’S EMERGING ARTIST! By Johara Almogbel

NAME:

Turki Al Andas AGE: 21

OCCUPATION:

n Student at Prince Sulta University, Finance MEDIUM:

Graffitti

What got you started? One day I was reading a book, and the writer (Brazilian), was talking about his hometown, Sao Paulo. He was saying it’s sweet and modern, yet walking through some alleys make him feel sadness and darkness in that part of the city, but then it’s balanced by the funny and beautiful street art on its walls, making it creative and joyful. The moment I read that, I applied that image on Riyadh and I found out how similar it is in comparison to Sao Paulo not only in terms of modernity, but with the negative side to it. With that in mind I used my basic tools and knowledge and started testing them, creating the first ever painting.

Why do you art? I simply love my city the more I live in it. It’s her walls that frame my paintings and her people are my fans. All my street art is dedicated to my lovely city and considered as a gift from my heart, not out of love only but because it deserves it and more.

Is your work the result of sudden inspiration, or long term planning? It’s actually a mix of both. The idea itself in term of design, colors, size and harmony is sudden. But the work of drawing, placement and quality management is estimated by days.

Nothing I do or think about comes from nowhere. It must have been seen, written or talked about somewhere in the past, making the work some sort of reference to that moment. 34 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2016

How do you think up your concepts?

What is, in your opinion, the best thing you’ve ever created and why? It’s hard to decide. It’s like picking the best finger amongst the other ones on your hand! But it is the passion and dedication poured into the work itself and the growth of quality increasing from one to another is the best thing about what I do.

What does being creative mean to you?

It means express yourself with respect to others, draw your own lines without crossing any lines. It means be random in thinking and organized in working. Fix what’s wrong so you can make it better, because creativity is more like responsibility; you have to take care of it all the time. turki_alandas

For the Love of the Va-Va-Vroom

What do you mean, in a relationship with your car?! By Yasir Malak

Love is also blind, not differentiating between race, color, creed or even chassis. Ah, the love of cars is a many splendored thing. Petrol-heads and grease-monkeys are some of the terms that motoring enthusiasts use to endearingly refer to one another, even when the rest of the world would prefer to just call them nuts, which is fine, since car lovers pride themselves in being 38 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2016

Social isolation aside, love of cars is also a significant commitment. Financially, cars typically represent the second largest expense item in your lifetime, topped only by the purchase of real estate. Add insurance, maintenance and upkeep, innumerable cleaning materials and detailing visits; the numbers start piling fast. That is nothing, compared

to the emotional investment car lovers make in their beloved vehicles; as no amount of money can soothe the heartache caused by an inconsiderately caused doording or a jolting drop in the numerous potholes scattered across the city. To explain this resolute bond would be as pointless as a broken pencil. There is no logical cause and effect analysis that would justify being in love with what simplistically is a machine. Tips for Younger Looking Hair What can you do for your hair?

Go Easy on the Shampoo

Shampooing daily or too frequently should be avoided; shampoos contain chemicals which cause severe dryness. Those who exercise frequently or live in humid places should let it breathe regularly and shampoo sparingly.

Lower the Heat

The overuse of heat robs your scalp of essential oils and weakens the hair follicles too. When possible, towel-dry your hair and let it dry naturally. If in a hurry, focus on drying the ends and use the cool option.

Leave it Open

Tight hairstyles pull the hair from the scalp. We may want to attain a sophisticated look, but end up paying the price of weaker hair.

Avoid Hot Showers

Hot water overdries the scalp, leaving hair brittle and dry. Make sure to wash with lukewarm water.

Don’t Forget Your Vitamins

Vitamin C helps boost collagen, while vitamin E stimulates circulation and hydrates hair follicles.

Massage the Scalp

Applying oil to hair is essential for healthy growth. More importantly, a massage invigorates the scalp and increases blood circulation. Aim to do this at least twice a week.

Skipping Daily Washes

Hair masks help retain moisture and deeply condition the outer cuticles, achieving stronger hair growth and shine. You can easily make homemade hair masks or find selections at Sephora and most pharmacies.

HINAINI

Winter’s Comfort Food By Johara Almogbel

62 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2016

Ah, winter. It’s such a wonderful time of the year. It’s cold, it’s happy, you have an excuse to inhale hot chocolate every hour of the day, and you get to wear boots! We can’t think of any better time when the circumstances all lead to such a wonderful combination. Plus, with all the extra coats and layers you have to wear, no one will ever notice you gaining a few pounds here and there, which makes it

the perfect time of the year to stuff your face with all the comfort food your heart desires. And if you’re a Najdi, that comfort food will most definitely mean hinaini. What’s hinaini, you ask? Well. It’s a magical substance of super-edible properties that endow you with instant happiness and fulfillment for the next 12 hours after you have consumed it.

It also grants you the ability to fly, and turns iron into gold. Also it tastes amazing. Okay, no, we’re just kidding (kind of). Hinaini is a sort of date paste traditionally made from mixing wheat bread with de-pitted soft dates and butter (or laban in some areas), and then warmed over an open fire. There are a couple of variations and recipes and modernizations to it, but

that’s the basic form. It’s also a specifically winter food, made only when the weather begins to cool down. Generally speaking, it’s not a dessert for the delicate of stomach, and it’s heavy enough to be a meal on its own. And for some odd reason, it seems to be a special Najdi delicacy, as we’ve yet to meet someone who isn’t living in the region who makes or eats it.

The textures for each are different, and if we’d be forced to choose between either one with a gun to our head… the Qassimi hinaini would probably be the one we’d grab first. Both are very delicious, but the former is more fun to eat and warms your belly faster. But shhh, don’t tell anyone we said that. As for mihala, it’s a different take on hinaini that isn’t as popular, and is more like a pudding. Also, spices like cinnamon are usually added to the top so that there’s a slightly spicy aftertaste. Gishd is the least popular of them all and happens to be the most basic form, but it’s the to-go-to during camping season as it can be cooked on an open pan over a charcoal fire. It’s made 64 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2016

of cooking together full dates and butter in a saucepan or pot until they mesh together, then adding a little wheat flour. And voila! It’s served.

Now, to the most important question of all: Where

to find some hinaini/ mihala/gishd?

Unfortunately, as with most delicacies special to a region, it’s kind of hard to find authentic hinaini outside of a home. Some supermarkets do offer ready-made versions that you just have to pop in the oven, but they are nowhere near as nice as our grandmas’ and mothers’. Some home businesses offer it as well, and they might be the closest to homemade you can get, but we have yet to verify any guaranteed sources.

Gishd

And there you have it! Now if you ever meet a Najdi during winter waxing poetic about hinaini, you’ll know exactly what they’re talking about! And maybe if you’re nice enough, they’ll share their grandmother’s hinaini with you. Probably. If they don’t eat it first.

Truth Myth

Searching the Internet for fitness and health can be a daunting experience, from an overdose of information to often misleading advice. This series aims to shed light on these hard-held beliefs still circulating in the fitness industry today. By Mirvat Ammouri

The burning feeling while working a muscle means it’s burning fat.

The burning sensation is simply lactic acid produced when a muscle is under tension for more than 15 seconds and has used up its immediate energy stores. It is NOT fat that is being burned. A muscle has three main systems to produce the energy needed to work the muscles. The first system is immediate and the energy lasts for 15 seconds. The second is quick, with the energy supply lasting for less than two minutes, but it produces lactic acid as a waste product. And the third system is slow to produce energy but it supplies the most of all.

Any fitness activity relies on all three systems, which work continuously together to produce energy. The burn we feel is exactly the lactic acid produced from system two. This acid is eventually flushed out and used as energy as the activity proceeds. When too much acid is produced and the muscles cannot flush it out fast enough, fatigue sets in and the muscles cannot contract properly.

Conclusion One cannot sense what he or she is burning as fuel for energy (sugars or fats). The workout determines which source of energy and which system is preferred. Tolerance to lactic acid and the burning feeling increases as one trains more consistently.

Recommendation KEEP • For beginners, THIS IN remind yourself MIND

that you will, with time, be better able to handle the achy feeling that the burn produces. • Some workouts are designed to produce that sensation because of the training benefits of these types of workouts. Take the challenge.

• It’s difficult to resist the burn, so instead of stopping an activity, try to take active rests (for example working a different muscle or doing some full body moves like burpees) every now and then, until you’re there. • The best way to flush out acid is to keep moving. So don’t stop the workout halfway through.

Stay tuned for more fitness myths in our upcoming issues.

Refined Carbs and Grain Products

Naturally, our food choices are not always “clean” or healthy, and we tend to crave junk food a lot. We convince ourselves that we are happier after surrendering to the hidden chocolate bar or bag of chips that was not meant to be eaten for another week, but then you get that “Oh no… What did I do?” feeling.

Well, that can be your blood sugar level crashing after succumbing to the junk food temptation. There are several foods known to be mood destroyers. Below is a list of known offenders, in addition to alternatives you can choose over those cravings.

Cereal, white bread, bagels, croissants, muffins, etc.

Does Red Meat Cause Cancer? If you’re visiting the butchers soon, pause and read this first. By Massa Bitar

68 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2016

On Oct. 26 last year, a new report, published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the cancer agency of the World Health Organization, concluded after a review of the over 800 accumulated

scientific literature, that red meat should be classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans” and processed meat as “carcinogenic to humans.” According to the report, the risk in both is highest for colorectal cancer.

REPORT EXPLANATION Red Meat All types of mammalian muscle meat such as beef, veal, lamb, mutton, horse and goat. Processed Meat Meat that has been transformed through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other processes to enhance flavor or improve preservation, such as hot dogs, sausages, corned beef and biltong or beef jerky as well as canned meat and meat-based preparation sauces. How Does Processed Meat Cause Cancer? (Theories) Haem, the pigment present in haemoglobin and naturally in meat,

Should You Stop Consuming Meat?

Each 50-gram portion of processed meat eaten daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18 percent. The report places processed meat as a serious cause of cancer along with asbestos, alcohol, arsenic and tobacco.

IARC did not make dietary recommendations. However, in response to the report, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends consumers to "vary their daily protein choices by including lean meats, poultry and fish along with plants sources like beans, legumes, nuts and seeds and to limit consumption of processed meats like hot dogs."

is broken down in our gut to form a family of chemicals called N-Nitroso compounds. These can damage the bowl lining cells; the ensuing DNA damage can lead to cancer. Processed meats have added nitrogen-based preservatives found to induce a specific DNA mutation, which leads to colorectal tumors. Cooking meat at high temperatures through grilling or barbecuing forms cancerous compounds too. So, as you see, the issue is not the quality and source of red meat, but its natural composition and the processing it undergoes. Although red meat has its nutritional value (it is a good source of the highly absorbable iron, zinc and vitamin B12), if your red and processed meats consumption is high, it would be wise to start cutting down on them‌ at least until new research is released. INTOLERANCE IN CHILDREN Allergies: how to make it easier for your child. We hear a lot these days about food allergies; you hear allergy stories from other mommies in your child’s daycare, on social media, or on Baby Center’s portal. Food allergies are common amongst children nowadays. The reason? Some say it is genetic, pollution, or the type of diet your child consumes. Do you suspect that your child has a food allergy?

Well, from my personal experience with my child, there are signs. My daughter, 3 months old and formula fed,

72 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2016

started having diarrhea and vomiting. Being a new mom, I couldn’t think of anything but a virus. Then after several blood tests, we discovered she was lactose intolerant. So, we switched to lactose-free formula. By the age of one, she started having asthma-like coughs and since it runs in the family, the doctors assumed she has it. We started the asthma medications, but it still didn’t subside. I went to a pediatric respiratory specialist who then discovered that she was not asthmatic; she was cow milk intolerant.

There are common foods that are known to cause allergies such as peanuts. But dear mothers, monitor the symptoms and follow your instinct. Sometimes children refuse to eat a single food like fish, or throw up after digesting. If this happens, contact your doctor or read about the symptoms. When introducing new food in your child’s diet, like fish, strawberries or peanuts, start with small doses and monitor his/her body’s reaction to it. On the other hand, if you find these symptoms happening once or twice, it might just be the normal case of your child not wanting to eat or not liking the food. Keep an eye out for reactions and symptoms.

Finally, intolerance isn’t a disease, it is just the body’s reaction to certain items around your child and not all intolerances are from food. Other elements around you may cause intolerance, like certain types of flowers, pollen, dust, etc. KEEP THIS IN MIND

Most common reactions to food allergies are either on the skin, in the gastric system, or will show in their bowel system.

WE RECOMMEND... - Teach your child about their allergy, the triggers, who to go to and where. - Keep their medication nearby at all times. - Inform their teachers, classmates, friends and family members of their allergies. - Keep a supply of alternate foods. - Order allergy tags for your child (amazon.com)

Health, Fitness and Minimalism Five simple steps to staying healthy. By Coach Sara

Minimalism is a movement that started with visual arts and music post World War II but has expanded to different forms such as design, architecture, fashion, and lately to personal lives - from uncluttering living spaces and giving up on old unfinished projects to paying outstanding debts and throwing away incomplete to-do lists. The minimalist philosophy advocates for getting rid of things that take up unnecessary space and energy and keep close those that matter. It is using and owning as simple, essential and few items as possible. I stumbled upon the minimalist lifestyle a few months ago after listening to a TED Talk called

74 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2016

“A Rich Life with Less Stuff” by Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, both known as “The Minimalists.” This video and other blogs such as Becoming Minimalist, Be More with Less, Project 333 and Zen Habits inspired me to simplify and organize. But minimalism is more than organizing a kitchen drawer or learning how to fold a t-shirt in 10 seconds. As a health coach, health and fitness are the two important aspects of my minimalist lifestyle. I want to live a meaningful and mindful life so I simplified my health and fitness plans and uncluttered everything that supported my bad habits.

Top five steps you can apply today towards a healthy, minimalistic lifestyle.

1 Go Back to Basics

2 Less Is More

Yes I know, nutritional information can be very confusing; do sugar substitutes cause weight gain? Are animal fats good for us now? And what’s up with all those kales and quinoas? One thing you need to Simplify understand your diet about nutrition plan information: and stick the majority of with the it is controlled basics; and manipulated yay veggies, by the food nay sugars. industry.

Read the food labels; if the ingredients are more than five and if you don’t recognize one of them, don’t buy it.

3 Develop a Routine

4 Spend Less Time Cooking

And schedule things around this routine. Let's be realistic, most of us are not training for a skating championship.Start with the absolute minimum (it can be as simple as following your gym on Instagram) then build on that small step.

To me, minimalism means making my health my top priority. Minimalism means something different to each one of us. What does a healthy minimalist lifestyle mean to you?

Maybe your dream is to become the Saudi Martha Stewart but ain’t nobody got time for that, right? Keep those fancy, complicated recipes for special occasions and go for simple recipes with few ingredients and easy cooking methods.

5 Crowd Out Instead of resisting the bad habits, focus on the positive. Eat simple, move every day and be patient until one day you won’t have room for any old, unhealthy ways.

Islam’s Call to Everlasting Success Islam: The road that leads to eternal peace. By Fatima Damad

Islam has established rights for everybody and are always in the best interest of every individual. Rights in Islam are given to benefit the individual and prevent any harm that might come to them.

“This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed My favor upon you and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.”[Surah Ma’idah5:3] Appreciating this, we should recognize how perfect our religion is. Words to Describe Islam

WORDS TO DESCRIBE ISLAM

1 Timeless 2 Encompasses Everything Good 1 3 Complete 4 Applicable Everywhere

Islam prevailed when the world was in need of knowledge and guidance and still can prevail, as it is fit for every society, be it modern or primitive. Every human that has lived and will live on Earth, can find eternal peace in Islam. Which religion can guarantee you success in this life and the Hereafter, except Islam?

Islam includes everything that is good for the human body and soul, and averts anything that might bring harm to oneself. Some things may appear evil, but in reality they are decreed for the greater good that result from them. “...Be mindful of Allah, you will find Him before you. Get to know Allah in prosperity and He will know you in adversity. Know that what has passed you by was not going to befall you; and that what has befallen you was not going to pass you by, and know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and ease with hardship.”(Tirmidhi)

It is a complete religion that requires no alteration; a complete way of life, governing from the moment of birth till death. Islam is a religion for everyone, as we were taught and can see in the rising numbers of Muslims all around the world from every race and culture. Allah says: “Say, “O mankind, indeed I am the Messenger of Allah to you all, [from Him] to whom

belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth.” (Surah Araf 07:158)

Success can only come from following what our creator has ordered us to do. If we bring out our own functioning manual, then we are sure to be doomed. Know that Islam is complete. Web: aateam.org theislamicteam

As we headed south on the Jeddah – Jizan Highway, we 84 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBUARY 2016

Soon after the industrial zones ended, there was no habitation whatsoever; just a wide empty stretch of highway passing through the desert. I wonder how lone drivers keep themselves

The sun’s light was shimmering in the blue sea creating a beautiful contrast with the giant ship leaning at a precarious angle on our side. It is commonly referred to as the Al Fahd Shipwreck. It stands grounded in reefs with much of the ship fully intact unlike other shipwrecks in the Red Sea. The waves were calmly brushing the sides of the ship before crashing into the shore. to the Maltese, followed by the Egyptians, who changed the ship’s name. Decades later and a number of owners and names later it finally ended up serving for 12 years in Saudi Arabia before meeting its untimely fate - being less than 50 kilometers away from its stopover point at the Jeddah Islamic Seaport. We found a place nearby that had softer sand to plant our volleyball pole and net. It was extremely windy that day, putting our well thought of plan of playing beach volleyball in danger. As we served the gusts of wind lifted the lightweight volleyball out of bounds even with the slightest touch. Following which it continued to roll fast across the beach and one of us had to run at full speed after it as it kept drifting away with each second that passed. After a somewhat failed attempt, we resorted to our second plan of the day, which was the good old 86 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBUARY 2016

barbeque. We sat till late night barbecuing and eating literally to the bone. There was no light around nearby whatsoever apart from the charcoal that was being used for the barbecue. It was so dark with the moon being in its crescent stage that when one of us would step away from the light it was almost like we went into the abyss. Even the shipwreck that stood so gracefully under the sun felt like it was no longer next to us. It was like we were desert camping except

that this time we had the sea next to us, which was gently lapping the shore. We had slight difficulty however in getting back to the main road as were so far off, in a place where there were no lights and tire tracks went in all different directions. But overall it was an amazing experience. While the beach is decent, it is the large shipwreck that brings the ‘wow’ factor to it. COORDINATES 20.802017, 39.425578

DC-3 aircrafts were purchased and put into service. Following which in September 1946, under the aegis of the Saudi Ministry of Defense the nation’s flag carrier, Saudia, was formed. The airport in Jeddah served as its main base. The following month the first international flight took off for Palestine and returning via Beirut carrying on it pilgrims bound for Makkah. Later that year, the first overseas office of the new airlines was taking bookings in Cairo that marked the beginning of the newly formed airlines’ international operations. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 87
