Our food issue is the crown jewel of this magazine, and we hope this one doesn’t disappoint. For this issue, we’ve brought you a complete rounded experience to guide you through everything; starting in your supermarket isles, to your dining room table and ending in other continents. It’s a culinary journey, if you will, and we’re going to be your guides. First up, we’re taking you on a tour of the city’s newest developments. We’ve also managed to track and pin down two traveling Saudi chefs who are always on the move to bring you the world’s best culinary experiences. Up next is Destination Riyadh’s most famous landmark, the DR Favorites. If all of this moving around is wearing you out, sit back and try our weird food combinations while we go international. Riyadh Prince Faisal Bin Bandar opened the 12th edition of Riyadh Shopping and Entertainment Festival at Al Othaim Center Mall. The 30day festival provided seasonal jobs for a large number of Saudis and offered discounts ranging between 30 and 70 percent from major companies. The festival is organized by the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI).

What got you started?

I always loved to express myself through art. In my early teens my grandfather encouraged me to paint and work on my creativity which helped me learn to love experimenting with different styles and aesthetics. I use art as a filter for all the ideas and thoughts I have trouble expressing or dispensing in another way. Art has been there through good and bad times. It’s meditation at its best. What do you think of the art scene in Riyadh? Anything you’d like to see changed? The art scene is definitely growing. Art lovers are more invested in finding great artists and supporting them. I personally want to meet more artists within the community to learn from them and get inspired by them.

Who are your role models?

My family members, my patients, and I gotta say my cat! He’s living the life!

What does being creative mean to you?

It means the ability to be free in expression in any media. It is the ability to talk with words, music notes, paint strokes, and body language. It’s being human.

Is your work the result of sudden inspiration, or long term planning? How do you think up your concepts?

It’s always different. I am inspired by many things. By the people in my life, the stories, music, lyrics, other art work and especially how I feel.

Can you give us the back story behind the name? A: The name is a merge between our family names: Lawand and Khawashki. MK: We'd been without a band name for about 4 years and one day we got called up for a gig and they asked us what we were called. Normally we'd just make anything up and go with that but this time we just decided that whatever name we give needs to be Arabic and needs to have

absolutely no meaning. We kept merging our names together really till we got something, and this time it stuck. ML: Our band name is a merge between our last names. So basically those guys with the last names merged. It doesn't really mean anything. I think it's funny really.

What's it like playing for a crowd? A: Naturally, the more I do it

the more I get used to it. In the beginning I used to get pretty nervous and my fingers would freeze, but now it’s more exciting and thrilling more than scary. I just try to avoid looking at the crowd and keep looking at my instrument to not worry about what they think of the music. MK: Always scary and always nerve wrecking, but always exhilarating just the same. It's also a lot of fun gauging the audience’s reaction to our

playing, be it good or bad. ML: We’re actually good at it. Playing for a crowd is not such a big deal, it's exciting and makes us want more. I personally have been playing for crowds since I was 14.

Where do you want to see the band in five years? A: It would be amazing if we would be performing across the Middle East and be known

regionally. Hopefully we would have a couple of albums as well. MK: Splintered up into a thousand and one other musical projects including this one! Sauce Burger Food trucks are a small recent manifestation of Saudi’s entrepreneurial spirit. Opening a business comes with a hefty price tag. And if you don’t have the capital, then your choices are limited. These food trucks allow small businesses to grow at their own rate, allowing their owners to perfect their craft while also gaining capital.

It’s not all peach cobblers and apple pies for these small time entrepreneurs. These trucks face many difficulties that we’re not often aware of. From the get go, they have to either import their trucks or build them from scratch because we do not have specialized factories for them. If they’ve found or built their dream truck, they have to deal with municipality. Because the laws and regulations are outdated and vague, food trucks have a difficult time operating within their parameters, leaving them constantly in motion, at odds with the municipality or exclusively for private hire. Explore the Top CAVES OF SAUDI ARABIA Have no fear, enter the cave.

Whether it be referred to spelunking or caving, this activity will allow you to witness the world of caves that are shrouded with mystery, darkness and numerous legends. Thanks to some extreme adventure lovers from the 80s, these cave systems were discovered; many unknown even to the early Bedouins. Here are some of these popularly treaded locations.

JABAL QARA

Though it may not fall in the conventional term of caving, this cave system made from sandstone, clay, marl and sedimentary rocks, is by far the most popular in the country. The auburn colored mountain contains a labyrinth of caves and caverns with little shafts on top that let light pierce 84 DESTINATION RIYADH AUGUST 2016

through, making the whole place look like a set of an Indiana Jones movie. Sitting around 20 kms from the city of Hofuf, it is a popular picnic spot amongst locals. Close to the very end of the narrow caverns inside, lies what locals like to call Ali Baba’s den – from the Arabian folktale of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves. What one may find surprising here, is that Jabal Qara is cool inside even when temperatures soar on the outside.

AIN HEET

Near the town of Al Kharj lie several sinkholes called dahls in Arabic, which is why this cave is referred to by locals as Dahl Heet. This particular dahl is the most famous of all dahls in the Kingdom, mostly due to its close proximity to the country’s capital. The specialty of this sinkhole is that it has water at its base, making it ideal for cave diving as well. Some geologists who have followed the waterways have even termed the water inside as the clearest and most transparent they’ve ever seen.

FATHER OF FEAR

Referred to as Abu Al Hol in Arabic, this cave is considered to be one of the deepest known caves in the country today. Sitting close to the small town of Al Majmaah, this cave drops a whopping 230 feet down from ground level. The bottom of the cave opens up to a room that measures around 330 feet in width. The base of the cave has several smaller tunnels that lead to places that remain unchartered to this day, as they are too small for humans.

DHARB AL NAJEM

Some believe that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a meteor site that came crashing, causing a crater measuring up to 25 meters in diameter, but some geologists oppose this and call it a natural sinkhole. Lying in the desert, east of Al Majmaah, the hole leads to a cavern around 100 meters in width. Despite being considerably deep, a shaft of light darts through during the day to the bottom chamber, illuminating it beautifully.

UPM CAVES

The cave was named after the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, as speleologists from the university along with the Austrian Academy of Sciences made the discovery. The caves have a 150 by 250 foot room at its base that contains thousands of animal and human bones. The stalactite formations are the most beguiling feature here and as opposed to other stalacalite formations this one is not fully formed and is still in its growing stages. The caves have easy access thanks to a large entrance and a pathway down that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t require a ladder or rope.

HISTORIC KSA Bir Hima's Art

Bir Hima sits 30 kilometers from Najran and is dotted with ancient wells. Rock art depicting battle scenes, animals, food, human figures and the general lifestyle of the ancient times adorn its walls. Battle scenes at Bir Hima run into the hundreds and mostly depict the cavalry and infantry charging with swords or spears. A few display armored horses, which was uncommon in ancient Arabian battles. Being a source of water, the site was critical for caravans travelling on the ancient Arabian trade route passing from the north to the south of the peninsula and vice versa. As the caravan routes changed, the site was deserted. Bir Hima is also significant due to the ancient writings written in the Musnad script and the remarkable stone structures and tombs that are found in the area.
