AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK at Diyar Al Salam A residential project unlike any other in the Kingdom.

Entrance and Lobby

Destination’s team went on an exclusive first-look tour of Diyar Al Salam’s model apartment site. What we discovered was far better than we could have imagined. Diyar Al Salam presents spacious homes with a modern approach to comfortable living. We were provided with protective helmets and jackets in a repurposed container made entirely out of reclaimed materials. The president and founder of Lifestyle Developers, Sultan Batterjee, led us on our tour of the model apartment. Dalal Al Fadhoul, Batterjee’s mother, launched Diyar Al Salam, which is

hailed as “a community within a community.” The project is an urban retreat that aims to provide high standards of living to middle and upper class professionals. The dove, a symbol of peace, embodies the project’s philosophical concept and is often seen as a motif in the project’s various structures and buildings. It is a massive project consisting of 8 buildings, including 140 residential units and 8 penthouses. The buildings are designed to optimize natural light and control air quality and water usage. Each living space is specialized to fit every aspect of a professional’s life.

The entrance lobby features custom designed marble flooring and oversized porcelain tiles to the elevator and stairs. Corridors contain wood effect porcelain tiles and a marble edge. The wallpapers and signage are also custom designed and eco-friendly. Residents access their home using electronic key cards. A professional system is in place to ensure security in the gated car park, which also contains electric car charging points.

Diyar Al Salam won the Best Residential Development Award at the International Property Awards and the Arabian Property Awards. It is the first private building in the Kingdom pursuing LEED, which is a notable achievement.

Attention to Detail As we walked through the rooms in the model apartment we discovered the attention to detail that proved the thoughtful planning that went into the project. The bedrooms had engineered parquet flooring along with oversized, glazed porcelain tiles throughout the apartment. All these combine to provide a contemporary style. The designer kitchens feature timber veneer doors, Italian stainless steel appliances by Bosch, integrated refrigerator and polished quartz

countertops. Kitchens are open to the living room but the open space can be conveniently controlled with floor to ceiling sliding doors. The bathrooms have white countertop mounted basins on imported marble vanities and honed marble floors and walls in the showers/bath. The glass-enclosed showers were quite spacious and modern. Every bathroom in the properties contains Hansgrohe fixtures and a Hansgrohe rain shower with separate hand shower controls. ADVERTORIAL DESTINATIONKSA.COM 19

The apartments are installed with an integrated water heating system and a semicentral integrated airconditioning system in every apartment. A fiber optic supply panel is available in every apartment to control the network. All rooms contain contemporary socket outlets to control the lighting. What makes Diyar Al Salam stand out is its efficient and spacious make and the care that goes into creating ease. The project was designed to accommodate a contemporary lifestyle that matches the residents’ career standards. It allows residents to relax after work by providing a community environment that enriches and expands the mind.

With an eye on becoming a center of excellence for personal and professional development, Alf Khair enables individuals to be productive, engaged, competent and integrated members of their communities. With four basic goals in mind, Alf Khair has already launched multiple initiatives to reach each of their targets.

3. Inspire creative talent and provide a platform for creativity and creative discourse both in Saudi Arabia and around the world. Alf Khair has partnered up with Saudi Design Week to launch CREATE, a competition inspired by 10KSA's Wings of Hope. Wings of Hope is a moving exhibition of sorts that features, as you may have already guessed, wings created by leading designers and artists from around the world to promote a healthy lifestyle. The competition is open to everyone in hopes of inspiring people to engage with their creative side. The winner will be chosen by the Alf Khair and Saudi Design Week teams, and the chosen work will join the permanent collection of CREATE and become part of the traveling exhibition. 24 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2016

IT’S YOUR TURN NOW Lubna Al Omair’s journey to stardom. By Lama Ghazzawi

With more female athletes making their debut at the last Olympics as the representatives of Saudi Arabia, we wanted to mark this important milestone by telling you a little story. Lubna Al Omair’s journey began at 16, when she was in the comfort of her home watching the Olympic fencing matches. She thought nothing of it at the time because it wasn’t an option, but the spark lit a fire that would burn, dormant, for years. Years later, her education took her from Dammam to Rhode Island in pursuit of a master’s degree. Wanting to seize every moment of her opportunity, she created a bucket list and set out to cross off as many experiences as she could, fencing included. She searched high and low and found a fencing academy that was more than welcoming. Her love for fencing grew and she brought her passion back with her to Sharqiya.

26 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2016

Hoping to continue fostering her passion, Al Omair sought out ways to continue fencing by trying to join an existing club then starting her own, but was faced with rejection and dismissal. She was told that as a Saudi, she should “know better,” but that only made her more determined to change the status quo. After finding some success in establishing a fencing club at Aramco, where she was working at the time, she was approached by the Olympic committee about potentially representing KSA.

STAFF PHOTO/NAWAF ALFARRAJ

“Why not? Perhaps I’ll be ready by 2030 or sometime after that,” thought Al Omair, but was taken by surprise when told she would be participating in that year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Despite being overwhelmed at the prospect of participating in the biggest international competition against professional athletes, she accepted the challenge. For her, it wasn’t about winning; it was about being a representative, not just of her country, but also her gender. She knew her chances of wining were slim to none, but she also knew that by just being there she was opening a door that was previously closed. With only a few months to prepare, she headed to Alexandria, Egypt

for an immersive training process with Egyptian athletes. As a newcomer to professional sports, Al Omair was amazed at how much emphasis Egyptians place on sports. She noticed that despite the dire financial status of some of their families, they still found a way to foster their children’s talents or hobbies. Having had a different experience growing up in Saudi, she admired their balanced view that sports were as important as academics. “I knew I had no chance of winning,” she said as she recalled her Olympic debut. Her lack of training hindered her but she also knew that it was beside the point. With her presence alone, she had managed to pave the way for aspiring Saudi female athletes. “Now the option is there! Joud, Lubna, Sara and Kariman opened the door… You have a chance to represent, and represent well, now that you know it’s coming.”

If someone else is better than me… I’ll push her to go. I’d be happy just clapping. — Lubna Al Omair

MANSOUR ALRASHED A BODY, BUILT An eye-opening conversation with Saudi Arabia's competitive bodybuilder. By Jou Pabalate

There are proliferating stereotypes about bodybuilders— they’re often boxed muscle-clad, testosterone-pumping machines who spend all their days ‘buffing’ it up at a gym. What people don’t really realize is the amount of discipline, determination and passion that goes into training. Like any other sport, it’s not all just a matter of physical rigor, it also requires mental balance and strong willpower.

It’s been 18 years since Alrashed first trained to be a bodybuilding athlete. He participated in a number of competitions throughout the years and is due to partake on the international stage this month. 28 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2016

STAFF PHOTO/NAWAF ALFARRAJ

While you do wonder whether he’s capable of crushing your digits with a handshake, it only takes a minute for you to realize that Mansour Alrashed is quite the kind and personable chap with an admirable passion for professional bodybuilding.

The demands of the sport can be quite costly. Alrashed mentioned how his nutritional needs can rack up to around SR 2,000 per week. Thankfully, he is one of, if not the first ever Saudi athlete sponsored and endorsed by a brand. “It is a lot of hard work, my typical day starts at the crack of dawn; I need to prepare my food for the day. As an athlete I need to know exactly what goes into my body. And yes, the diet plan is not for the faint of heart. We’re looking at 15 egg whites in the morning, protein shakes, supplements and a dry diet that has made me lose two of my teeth in the past years,” he candidly shares. As expected, Alrashed goes to gym almost every day. His workout regimen consists of rigorous strength training and cardio. He sticks to a strict schedule, balancing his professional life as a secretary for a government institution, a personal fitness trainer, managing to make time for his daughter and having time to be a drummer for a rock metal band. A multi-faceted Saudi, Alrashed also has an entrepreneurial spirit. Combining his love for the sport with what he sees to be an underserved market, he is currently working on a strength training and body building app. He is also planning to launch a local fitness apparel line called Muscle Empire.

With the way we look and how we workout, people think we’re all muscles, mean looking or just aggressive. I understand why they would think that way, but it’s not true. A lot of bodybuilders are easy going, nice guys— we just enjoy taking care of our body a certain way. — Mansour Alrashed

With the persistence of such misconceptions, we asked Alrashed what the benefits are to becoming a bodybuilder, to which he replied: “There are a lot. And it’s not just about building muscles, in general, fitness— taking the time to build a body that is strong and you’re comfortable with is important. It gives you confidence, it allows you to stay positive and feel good about yourself. You start your day feeling you have already achieved something when you manage to do your workout whether it’s lifting a hundred pounds or simply taking the time to take care of yourself.” mansouralrashed010

Why did you choose taekwondo as the sport to train in?

Why did you choose taekwondo as the sport to train in?

Why did you choose taekwondo as the sport to train in?

What is it like to win a tournament?

What is it like to win a tournament?

Because my father used to practice taekwondo, so the whole family ended up doing it. It’s one of the most beautiful sports.

What's the best part of training?

I like all the drills, I enjoy doing them. Intense training breeds heroes.

Who’s your role model?

My main role model is the model for every Muslim, the Prophet (PBUH). In the sport, my role model is my father, the person I learned most from. If not for Allah’s will, and then my father, I wouldn’t have reached the level I am at now.

When I was younger, I loved sports and martial arts, so my father chose taekwondo as a sport I can train in.

I feel extreme happiness. Winning a tournament has been a dream I’ve had ever since I was a child. It also makes me very happy to respresent my country and make it proud.

Who’s your role model? I would say Captain Fahad Alduwaysan.

What do you want to be in the future?

I’d like to become a dentist.

I chose taekwondo because it’s a fighting sport and I prefer martial arts to the point that it’s become my favorite.

I feel victorious, like I reached the top of the summit and fulfilled my goals.

What’s the most difficult part of training?

Fixing mistakes. The best part is the beginning of drills.

Who’s your role model? Prince Saud Bin Faisal Abdulaziz, because he was a leader.

MUD HOUSES

Further along Makkah Road lies the district of Al Hozaimiyah. Behind the area’s new structures and farmland lies this abandoned hidden gem. A little history and culture with your dose of yoga is never a bad idea, right? You’d be surprised how relaxing it can be.

AL YAMAMA GARDEN

Also in the west side of the Diplomatic Quarter (Safarat District), this park doesn’t see that much foot traffic. The abundant trees surrounding park make this a perfect destination for a sunny day. Immerse yourself in the sound of water and let that anxiety flow.

CLIFFS

Located along Makkah Road, after the checkpoint, this location is prefect for reflection. The cliffs are one of Riyadh’s most beautiful natural sites. Despite being close to a highway, this is a surprisingly quiet and undisturbed spot, well if you don’t count the camels that is.

WADI HANIFA

A climbers’ favorite, this area is a relatively busy area. Head there in the right time however (early morning) and you’ll have the Wadi Hanifa park to yourself. Making it your own calm little oasis… with the added benefit of trampolines. We love trampolines.

Dr. Joshua Kilgore, a notable gynecologic oncologist at the world renowned Houston Methodist Hospital, answers important questions regarding gynecologic cancer and its many implications that gravely affect women.

TREATMENT USING THE DRUG TAMOXIFEN A drug used to prevent and treat breast cancer can slightly increase a women’s risk of developing endometrial cancer, but it’s a risk that’s balanced by the reduction in risk of breast cancer. If you use tamoxifen, notify your doctor if you have any unusual vaginal bleeding.

What are some signs and symptoms of vaginal cancer? Vaginal cancers, just like many other gynecologic cancers, do not typically cause any noticeable symptoms in the early stage. However, this may be detected on a Pap smear as part of an annual examination.

As the disease develops, more noticeable symptoms appear, including: • Abnormal vaginal bleeding. • Pelvic pain. • Lesion in the vagina. • A lump or bump in the groin.

Should I be concerned about ovarian cancer? While ovarian cancer causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system, breakthroughs in treatment options have made this cancer much more manageable. Of the three kinds of ovarian cancer,

At Houston Methodist Hospital, we offer these advanced surgical options to our patients with gynecologic malignancies.

epithelial is the most common, accounting for 85 percent of all cases. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

What is the role of laparoscopic or robotic surgery in the treatment of gynecologic cancers? Due to recent advances in technology, women diagnosed with cervical cancer, endometrial cancer and early ovarian cancer are now candidates for surgery using the new laparoscopic or robotic approaches.

The benefits of these minimally invasive techniques over the traditional open technique include smaller incisions, decreased blood loss, shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery. Web: houstonmethodist.org/global

What’s your secret to keeping track of everything and not falling behind, whether it be your blog, your personal training, or your recipes?

I’m a big fan of to-do lists. I love making daily, weekly, monthly and yearly lists of things I want to accomplish or improve. It brings me so much joy and organizes my thoughts when I’m overwhelmed. Another thing, I just keep in mind that I know how being productive makes me happy. 36 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2016

Your photos are so vibrant. Where’d you learn how to style food? And would you consider food styling full time? Thank you! I learned by reading a lot, watching YouTube videos, and following inspiring food bloggers. I would love to be a food stylist! As it comes naturally to me. But honestly, at this period of time, if I do it, I would have to style “nonvegan” food and I don’t feel comfortable doing that.

If you could morph into an animal, which one would you choose? (And why?)

Any plans on going commercial? The masses need your ice cream. They really do.

Hahaha I know! I want to share it with the world. I want to receive my yoga teacher training before I officially turn Sukkari Life into a business. For now, I like to share my lifestyle on social media, posting healthy recipes on the website, and share my knowledge on a plant-based diet. I enjoy meeting new people, participating in events, and making food for anyone who’s craving some vegan goodness.

What’s your daily routine?

I wake up around 4 – 4:30 a.m., meditate for 30 minutes then practice yoga for 40 to 90 minutes depending on how I am feeling. After that, I cook or I just quickly prep my breakfast and lunch and head to work. My job is from 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. After that I head to KORE, practice yoga a little bit or dance, then start my shift from 5 – 8 p.m. After that I go home and sleep around 9 p.m. Sometimes I go out at night or have friends over and not get enough sleep. But hey, life isn’t perfect all the time. Web: sukkarilife.com

I would choose a horse. For me, horses symbolize strength and kindness at the same time. Even though most people would guess I would choose a monkey for all the bananas I eat and how hyper I can be.

An alternative for medication.

SOUR POMEGRANATES • Pomegranate seeds that are mixed with honey will alleviate septic fingers and malignant ulcers.

BITTER POMEGRANATE

• It softens bile symptoms, relieves diarrhoea, prevents vomiting and is slightly tarry. • It stops the heat in the liver, strengthens the organs, helps with heartaches.

SWEET POMEGRANATE • The water (or juice) in the pomegranates softens the stomach and is a nutrient for the body. • It digests quickly because it is light and produces heat along with some air in the stomach. • It is also good for the throat, chest and lungs and helps with relieving coughs.

• It helps the stomach rid of its excrement and extinguishes the bile and benefits the blood • When pomegranate juice is extracted and cooked with some honey until it becomes like an ointment, it can be used as eye drops. It will clear the yellow color from the eyes and dissipate the thick wetness. • It helps with rashes on the gingiva (gums).

• Pomegranate flowers help heal wounds and if swallowed thrice each year will make the patient immune from ophthalmic (conjunctivitis) for an entire year.

The pomegranate also comes under the fruits that Allah has mentioned in the Quran, and will be of the fruits of Jannah. “In both of them are fruit and palm trees and pomegranates.” (Surah Ar-Rahman, 55:68)

Since we have an idea of the benefits now, let’s head out to the closest store and get some pomegranates! Web: aateam.org theislamicteam

From Hippocrates and Cleopatra, to King Tut and the civilizations that followed, a strange commonality they shared was the value they placed on a certain herb. That herb is no other than the black seeds, or Habba Soda in Arabic.

VERMIFUGE

Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said, “Use this Black Seed regularly, because it is a cure for every disease, except death.” [Al Bukhari and Muslim]

Being useful is a characteristic of all Sunnah foods, and black seeds are no exception. More importantly this highlights the mercy of Allah, who ordains us only for things that are beneficial. Muslims have been using and promoting the use of black seeds for hundreds of years, and hundreds of articles have been written about it. Black seeds have also been in use worldwide for over 3,000 years. It is not only a prophetic herb, but it also holds a unique place in the medicine of the Prophet (PBUH). So what are we waiting for? Let’s open those kitchen cabinets and make use of our black beauties that have up until now been personifying sleeping beauties.

Black seed oil is an extracted oil substance deriving from the Nigella Sativa plant that is native to Asia. Considered part of the buttercup family, the plant has small, crescent shaped seeds that are distinguished by its rough texture, making them unique and easy to identify. The ingredients found in black seed oil produce a panacea remedy, where it is used to cure all aspects of a given illness. Its multipurpose effect is derived from the following properties: • Anti-bacterial • Anti-inflammatory • Anti-oxidant • Anti-fungal • Anti-cancer • Anti-asthmatic • Anti-histamine • Anti-viral • Anti-coagulant Web: aateam.org theislamicteam

COLOR FOR KEEPS A guide to help achieve your desired color with minimal damage. By Michelle Carrey

FYI Before You Dye Stop dyeing your hair (3-6 months).

Previous colors make it harder to achieve lighter tones.

Start using clarifying shampoo (1-month). The clarifying shampoo helps to remove some of the build up caused by chemicals and products.

Prepare mentally to cut some length:

Where there is bleach there is damage, so prepare to lose some locks.

Talk to your stylist:

Ask your stylist for the Olaplex treatment, which is a must when you’re bleaching to avoid much of the damage and breakage.

Time: Get ready for a process that can take 3-8 hours.

Invest in products:

Whether it’s for repairing, maintaining or rebuilding your hair, products are a must.

Do not shower (a day before).

Your natural oils will help protect your hair. 60 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2016

After the Process Tips • Get a shower filter. It will help color fading and discoloration from the city water. • Do not wash your hair more then 2 or 3 times a week because it will fade. When you do shower, use a sulfate-free or color depositing shampoo. It’ll help sustain the color a little longer. • Use a dark towel and pillowcase. Make sure your hair is damp or at least dry or it will pretty much stain everything it touches. • Try to not use too much heat like, flat or curling irons, blow dryers and even direct sun. The heat makes the color fade quickly. •Use a mask once a week to renergize your hair.

WARNINGS Everything you own will have a slight tint of whatever color you choose. Fashion colors are semi permanent, so they fade and require a lot of touch ups. But on the bright side, they are far less damaging than dye because they do not contain any harsh chemicals. Say goodbye to walking around without a tarha. Strangers will try to take pictures of you in public.

To dye or not to dye? Take this quiz and find out

Are you ready to use lots of bleach? Yes No Are you ready to cut Don't do it. Your hair a bit of length? had to be light to get your desired color. Do you wash your hair more than 2/3 times a week? Do you use blowdryers, curling irons or straightners regularly? Are you ready to invest in products? Are you mentally prepared to spend 3-8 hours in a salon chair? Have fun you crazy kid!

Don't. The bleach will damage your hair and will require a cut. Washing frequently fades the color. You hair is fragile when bleached. Adding heat will damage and fade it. Stop! Your hair needs all the TLC it can get. It's a long proccess with no cutting corners. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 61

HEALTHY JUNK FOOD

Healthier and delicious junk food options for you. Let’s get this party started. By Seyma Saricimen and Zahra Anwer

HEALTHY ENOUGH Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookies by Chef Maha

Both wholesome and tasty, these chocolate chip peanut butter oatmeal cookies would be perfect to satisfy your mad chocolate cravings. Made with absolutely no fat, minimal sugar, whole wheat flour, organic peanut butter and pure chocolate chunks.

Quinoa Chips

Wins best texture: super crispy and light without being too airy. The main thing we liked about these chips is that they contain no artificial colors or flavors, preservatives or trans fats.

YOU’VE BEEN JUNKED:

The food industry labels a lot of their “healthy” packaged goods deceptively. When something says diet or light we suggest you jump a meter back, because these foods and drinks are loaded with bad sugars and additives that are going to ruin your metabolism.

A natural grain, sugar and gluten free alternative to brownies, baked with 100 percent natural ingredients. It’s high in antioxidants, fiber and minerals from the premium dark chocolate, sea salt and nuts combination.

Nutella Oat Bars by Chef Maha

This bar is delicious but the reason why it’s not rated as “extremely healthy” is because of the little bit of added Nutella mix, which still makes it a better choice than regular snacks but not quite up there.

DROP IT Fitness Snack Bar

EXTREMELY HEALTHY Oat Bran Breakfast Biscuits

These biscuits provide 22.8 percent of your daily fiber intake in just one serving. Slightly dry and crunchy, they are a bit difficult to eat without drinking anything along with them. Available in: Al Rifai and other stores.

KIWA Vegetable Chips

These are the handsdown favorite of our review panel. Made from vegetables but still crunchy and salty like potato chips. They are healthier, and most importantly, still tasty.

Extremely high in sugar, definitely isn’t close to healthy.

Fitness Healthy Cereal

You don’t expect a cereal to even contain any sugar, and the sugar content of these are over the top with different kinds of sugar and sugary syrups added to it.

Light Digestive Biscuits

Although not extremely high with sugar like other diet foods, sugar is one of the main ingredients along with wheat flour which is all carbs. It also has addition of vegetable oil and fructose syrup which is known to destroy your metabolism.

Brazil Nut Snack Bar From “Taste of Nature”

This snack bar could easily be one of the healthiest store bought snack bars. Loaded with delicious nuts and seeds makes it a great source of protein and healthy fats. The sweetness is from agave syrup or other natural sources making it one of our top choices. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 69

FOR THE LOVE OF COFFEE

The relationship between Saudis and Arabic coffee.

Arabic coffee is as much of a staple in every Saudi home, occasion, or any general place with walls and Saudis inside, as butter is in a French one. Some days you manage to pull off the oh so elusive perfect dallah of Arabic coffee, while other days you’re stuck with a watered down faux version. Yatooq, which translates to “longing,” is a very familiar name for people who have struggled in the past with making “real” Arabic coffee. Prior to their ascension, the process of making the perfect dallah is a bit of a toss up. But now, Yatooq has managed to turn the art of coffee

making into an exact science, guaranteeing you the same flavor every time. Their coffee machine revolutionized the way we make and consume Arabic coffee. Yatooq’s story began when their founder, Lateefa Alwalaan, sought out to find a solution for her house’s inability to master Arabic coffee. She launched an expedition to every region in Saudi to figure out the secret to creating the prefect cup. With an idea of creating an Arabic coffee machine on the backburner, Alwalaan decided to start by introducing her very own brand of traditional all-natural and preservative free coffee, marking Yatooq’s first endeavor.

Later Yatooq’s line of Arabic coffee blends and local drinks expanded to include a much loved local tea drink, Karak tea, a hot tea and milk drink famous in the region. A line of instant Arabic coffee has been launched as well, to serve customers on the go.

I TRIED A JUICE DETOX Juice for three days… and I survived. By Johara Almogbel

so I contacted a local coldpress detox juice supplier and booked myself for a whole three days. Would I survive? Would this end in blazing agony? Would I fit in my perfect skinny jeans again without popping the zipper like I did last time?

Everyone’s been raving about how good juice detoxes are,

So many questions, so little fries.

Woke up, drank a cup of hot water as was stated on the instructions and followed it up with my first juice: Skin Radiance. The juice itself tasted like someone threw a salad sans dressing in the blender, but it wasn’t so bad, as were the others. The juices are numbered 1-6 for easier consumption. By sunset I was starving, though, and the concept was getting a little more difficult each bottle. I finished day 1 without any solids jumping into my mouth. Did I feel healthy? I’m withholding judgement just yet.

SOURCE PHOTO/ PURELYB.COM

Here’s the thing: I’m relatively healthy, generally speaking. I go to the gym a couple of times a week and take my vitamins. But I also really, really, really like to eat, and as a result my weight is more fluctuating than the stock markets.

DAY 1

72 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2016

DAY 2

TOTALLY PUMPED UP! Okay that might be a little exaggeration, but I feel okay. I thought I might wake up sluggish, but I only snoozed once (compared to the normal four to five times) and I went to the gym and did a full class without feeling dizzy. Hopefully the juices get better and it gets easier. Although the salad juice is back albeit a little sweeter. I don’t like you, salad juice. Shame on you. Also the bread is starting to yell my name, I swear to you. It’s peer pressure. I’m being peer pressured by carbs.

DAY 3

The finish line is so close, I can practically smell it. And by it I mean the chocolate eclairs the whole family is eating. Never do a detox around people eating heavily, that’s my number one advice. Don’t go to parties either. Honestly though, knowing it was my last detox day was making it easier. Plus, the salad juice is gone, and the majority of them are lovely and sweet. Drinking the last juice felt so victorious I actually ended up eating super healthily the next few days because it feels like I conquered the vegetable kingdom!

CONCLUSION

My body does feel a lot better, and it’s definitely less bloated. I wasn’t hungry at all, either, and for me I was actually being healthier than I usually was. I’m not in my favorite jeans yet but it’s a good way to hit reset for your system. Would I recommend it? Personally, I’d do it again, but I really find that it depends on the person, their sensitivity to dietary changes and their stamina. Tested: Juicy Motto juicymotto

HISTORIC KSA Jeddah at the Center of the India–Egypt Trade Where goods from the east and the west met. By Mohammed Mirza

An often overlooked part of Jeddah's history is its significance in maritime trade and status as a major entrepôt. Jeddah's strategic location right in the midst of a major trade route has helped it grow leaps and bounds. Up until the 10th century Jeddah did not play a major part in maritime trade. It was only when the Egypt-India trade rose that Jeddah started seeing goods coming to it from the east and the west. The port served as a mart of sorts between the India – Egypt trade. Ships passing from the Suez Canal rarely proceeded further south than the port at Jeddah and those from India likewise in many cases did not advance further north from this port. The merchants of Jeddah would buy goods from India and transship it to agents in Cairo who sold the goods domestically and to other places across the Mediterranean. Among the goods brought to Jeddah to be re-exported were sugar, rice,

dyes, teakwood, spices and various types of cloths. Jeddah’s firm foothold in the Red Sea trade was the result of a pact involving port authorities and shipmasters. However, once the Portuguese discovered an alternative route to India across the Cape of Good Hope, the fortunes of the city dwindled and Jeddah once again became dependent majorly on pilgrims.
