FROM THE EDITOR
How’s the breeze working out for you Riyadhis? Welcome to another edition of Destination’s Good Vibes issue. As you might have guessed already from its title, this issue is packed with feel-good stories that are sure to inspire you, or at least put a smile on your face. Change in our city has always been led by individuals who “dare” to challenge the status quo. These people and organizations have been on the forefront of progress, so it’s about time we met them. The announcement of the General Entertainment Authority has been surrounded by a lot of intrigue and speculation. And like the good journalists we are, we have brought you the scoop on the GEA and have, hopefully, demystified them for you. Also check out the Awesome Riyadhis article for our salutes to a number of Riyadhis who have shaped and helped our city. In celebration of our city, the Destination team has been working hard to create the video for our Try Local campaign. The Try Local campaign is essentially our public service announcement to get everyone to experience our beautiful city through its people, activities and language. To accompany the video, we’ve compiled a list of activities and places to visit in our Special Features section. We’ve been racking our brains trying to figure out the best way to sign off on our last issue of the year and we’ve been drawing blanks. So, we figured we’d keep it simple:

Over 45 years after his untimely death, his descendants continue to honor their father’s legacy in a manner befitting of his life: charity. Founded a year after his death, the King Faisal Foundation (KFF) is now considered one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the world.
The greatness of a nation is not measured by the size of its material possessions, but by its role in the progress of mankind. — Khalid Bin Faisal, Chairman of King Faisal International Prize
A King Remembered With talks about a King Faisal movie in the works, we were inspired to take a look at his legacy. By Areeb Al Shathri
What does a French cab driver, a Palestinian business man and a Saudi 5-year-old have in common? Well, their namesake is one and the same: King Faisal. There is little to no argument that King Faisal holds a particularly special spot in the hearts of Saudis and Arabs in general. His bold political stances, his views on modernization, his strong character and his inclusiveness all add up to make him one of the most well respected monarchs we’ve ever seen.

Of the winners, 18 were also awarded Nobel Prizes among others.

Much like its namesake, there is no idea too big for KFF. One of their most important areas of focus is education. In an attempt to plan for the future of Saudi Arabia while still honoring its past, the foundation has collaborated with the International Baccalaureate Organization to merge an international education with local customs and religious values. Eighteen schools benefitted from their project to expand access to IB programs. King Faisal School, Alfaisal University and Jeddah’s Effat University (the first female only university in the Kingdom) are all products of KFF’s investment in education. They have also invested over SR 60 million in scholarships for students from different countries to pursue varied levels of education.

The Social Entrepreneurs Generation What you teach a 9-year old can change the world. What we input into children will be the output of future economy, social harmony, and a country’s role on an international level. Some might argue that we’re giving 9-year olds much more importance than they deserve. However, the truth is how a child is raised is directly linked to who they become and how they function as a citizen. A community is made up of citizens; a nation is made of communities, and the world is made of several nations. Hence, what you teach children today can potentially cause the 2047 recession or the solution to climate change.

So, how can we raise a generation of future social entrepreneurs?
18 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2016
Sharing
Social entrepreneurs believe in putting others first, and in sharing all their knowledge, time and energy for a cause. From an early age a child must be taught to share their favorite items with siblings and friends. The concept “ mine” can progress to a lack of selfless spirit. They develop a faulted pride in ownership, in contrast with the joy of seeing others receive. Teach children to share, not when it is within their means, but when it is not convenient.
Giving
Giving is the sole concept of a social enterprise. It needs to be deeply rooted within a child’s character. To a social entrepreneur giving is a personal moral code. Unlike how charity is viewed, giving is utilizing yourself and making a very human investment regardless of its returns. Teach your child to always offer help to their siblings and friends. Involve your child in
charity and volunteering, but do not let them think of if it as pitying others, because a social entrepreneur sympathizes and then empowers those in need and provides them with a sustainable solution.
“I’m Capable”
A social entrepreneur does not wait for the government or those with higher official positions to support society. They view themselves as an active role in developing the community. When conversing about social issues with your children, make sure to ask, “What do you think we can do about this?” “How can you be of any help, even if a little bit?” Let them envision their
capabilities of creating social progress and realizing they have a lot worth giving.
Teach a child that they are superheroes, not victims of economy and world politics. Stimulate in them the problem solving skills, innovative thinking and allow them to imagine all kinds of solutions to social issues - the possible and impossible! SUSTAINABILITY IN SAUDI ARABIA It’s now or never. By Amr Banaja, VP Marketing and Corporate Responsibility, SEDCO
As Saudi Arabia witnesses one of its toughest economic challenges in recent history, the government has launched both Vision 2030 and the National Transformation Plan 2020 to aid in shaping a new, more diversified, robust and sustainable economy. The vision has mainly been fueled by the recent drop in oil prices which historically uplifted the Saudi economy over the past eight decades reaching record highs of USD 145 a barrel in 2008.
Now with a 52-week low of USD 28 per barrel, Saudi Arabia is left with the question, “How can we sustain our economy when over 90 percent of revenues depend on a depleting resource that’s also dropping in price?” 20 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2016
USD 28 per barrel
The very definition of sustainable development is to meet the needs of today without compromising the needs of future generations. As the Saudi government starts to take noticeable and transformational actions, a lot of companies in the private sector faced with the same predicament, are asking the same question, “how can we be sustainable?”
The sustainability question for companies is not a single department or team responsibility, but that of the entire organization. Addressing competitive workforce means looking at workforce development, health and safety and equal opportunity. Social development requires strategic community investments that are measurable and impactful. Empowering local suppliers means having a responsible supply chain management system that supports local suppliers. Solid governance means that there is a commitment to best practices in governance and solid commitment to adhering to them. Lastly, responsible environment commitment means that there is a clear policy towards resource usage and conservation, and an approach to reuse, reduce and recycle. Now is the opportune time to tackle this question head on and address the main dimensions of sustainability that include social and environmental sustainability, in addition to the common question of economic sustainability. It is no longer possible for companies to simply meet the needs of today and wish the best for the future.
A proactive approach towards the fundamentals of economic, social and environmental sustainability means companies today have to address key issues such as addressing a locally competitive workforce, empowered local suppliers, responsible environmental practices, solid corporate governance and new and improved solutions for social development.
Just as the government took a positive approach in 2016 towards crafting a sustainable vision for the future of the domestic economy that involves a coming together of ministries, now is the time for companies and their leadership to rally their teams and departments towards a holistic and sustainable development for their future.

THE KINGDOM IS CHANGING
KSA has undergone quite a few changes in the last decade. More so since Vision 2030 was announced. By Areeb Al Shathri
What is perhaps one of the most talked about points in the vision is the establishment of the General Entertainment Authority (GEA). With so much guesswork surrounding them, we figured we’d get the scoop on what the GEA has been cooking.
WHO ARE THEY?
The General Entertainment Authority is an autonomous government entity created back in April/May to help with elevating the customer experience and journey across many recreational and entertainment related activities. It is mandated to set up, build and grow, regulate and monitor the entertainment industry. Its goal is to help achieve the Vision 2030 goals and aspirations from an economic and social perspective.
WHO OVERSEES THEM?
The General Entertainment Authority (GEA) reports directly to the cabinet of ministers in the Kingdom.
22 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2016
WHAT EXACTLY ARE THEY DOING?
The original mandate and initial by-laws of the GEA include, but are not limited to: • Setting the rules and regulations for monitoring the spectator activities, and helping establish a certain level of quality and experience. • Setting key performance indicators for measuring events management performance. Support, endorse and collaborate with related government entities and bodies to achieve their goals. • Setting up a one-stop shop for licensing and permitting entertainment activations. • Working closely with local, regional and international businesses and partners to further develop the entertainment industry.

adventurer. It was a personal journey first and foremost, a drive to discover places, people and inadvertently, himself.
He currently stars on Rahalah, a travel web series where he goes to different cities around the world. In its first season, the series consists of eight episodes spanning eight countries and has already gained notable praise and a loyal following.
“At one point I found myself in the middle of the jungle in Brazil, where I lived with a local tribe. Being unplugged and isolated from the rest of the world interestingly made me connect with myself and also opened my eyes to the sense of community each person fosters. You also realize that you’re merely a co-habitant on this planet and that strengthened my respect for all living things and the environment as a whole.”
Al Jumah in Machu Picchu, Peru
The experiences stuck to him and inspired Al Jumah to write the number one bestseller book in the Kingdom, entitled “Tales of a Saudi in Europe”. In the aftermath of his book’s success, Al Jumah was catapulted to media personality status. Named as one of the most influential Arabs by Arabian Business, he has attracted a huge following on both online and offline
platforms. Perhaps the appeal of Al Jumah’s travel stories is that it provides readers a chance to see the world through the eyes of someone they can relate to. As much as Al Jumah brings insightful import to the region, he is also able to give the people he encounters abroad a better understanding of the culture and genuinely represent what it means to be a Saudi.
“It was a nice opportunity to open up their minds and just reframe what they see on western media. It’s not that I even do it intentionally, it’s just regardless of where I am, I live as I would and be who I am. Sometimes people would ask and I would answer them about my faith, and I take that as an opportunity to let them learn about us, the same way I am learning about them.” In the end, Al Jumah inspires us to seek what lies beyond the horizon, without necessarily forgetting where home is. What this modern day nomad does is beyond taking us along on his journeys; Al Jumah bridges gaps, in distances and in cultures; and that’s just what everyone needs to feel a little less lost in translation. At the end of this year, we found ourselves asking what it means to be an awesome Riyadhi. And we realized, it all boils down to loving this city, making it your home and doing what you can to make it even better. We thought it’s a great time to give a salute to people and local enterprises who we saw rise up to the challenge in their own special way. This great salad of a community we have is made great by the efforts big and small of individuals who choose to celebrate their differences, share their passion and focus on what can bring us together as a whole.

Live and love local with this bucket list. Are you ready? By Jou Pabalate
WATCH THE SUN SET OR RISE AT EDGE OF THE WORLD It is breathtaking and will force you to unplug from the world, quite literally since there is no signal there. Watching the sun break through the horizon and cast its beams upon the cliffs is simply one of the most beautiful things you’ll lay your eyes upon in the city. Go with a professional local tour guide, like Amazing Tours or at least with local friends who have gone there once to avoid getting lost.
HAVE AN AUTHENTIC NAJDI FEAST For newcomers in the city or expatriates in general, we would always encourage you to embrace some warm Saudi hospitality. Likewise, if you’re a Saudi, open your home to your non-local friends. Nothing beats a Najdi grandma’s cooking but if a proper home invitation has eluded you, then go to the Najdi Village in Bujairy or Yasmin District. Do not leave until you’ve tried the jaraeesh, kabsa and hnieni. Disclaimer: You will get into a food coma after this. 30 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2016
SOAK IN FOLK TRADITIONS Watch an Aarda, yes, Saudis know their beat. You’ll often see the traditional aarda dancers in cultural events, weddings or any special occasion. But don’t worry you can also experience it every Thursday in Bujairy after maghrib prayer. And while you’re chilling in this historical plaza, be on the lookout for vendors who sell traditional fabrics, handwoven local crafts and trinkets.
HORSEBACK RIDING
More a spectator than a rider?
Horseback riding is one of those activities any Riyadhi would’ve at least tried once in their lives. You can go to the Equestrian Club at Wadi Hanifah or drive further out to the Dirab Golf Course where they offer lessons and riding sessions. There are also the random ones along the roads of Al Thumamah District.
Racing season is now, watch the races at King Abdulaziz Race Course or attend the local showjumping competitions happening around town.
SEE RIYADH FROM ABOVE The Kingdom Tower and the water tower at the King Abdulaziz Cultural Center in Murbah offer stunning views of modern and old Riyadh. For the best view and experience, go flying in a gyro plane at the Land and Space Aviation. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 31
BARGAIN AT THE SOUKS Whether its oriental oils, textiles, wares and more, you’re bound to stumble upon cheap buys and local gems at Riyadh’s souks. Souq Al Zal has it all and the best part is it’s near the Masmak so all you have to do is crossover. While there, make sure to check out the local incense and oil shops, carpets and fabrics to truly marvel your senses.

TAKE IN RIYADH’S HISTORY AT THE MASMAK
You can rent out a proper tent at Thumama, complete with a fire pit and insulation; or do it authentically on your own. Set up a bonfire, bust out the dallah and dates, wrap yourself in a farwah, roast some Faqah (desert mushrooms) and just be one with nature.
32 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2016
Located in Ad Dira, the Old Riyadh district, the Masmak is considered to be the focal point for the establishment and unification of Saudi Arabia under the leadership of King Abdulaziz.
GO DATE PICKING Gahwa and dates is a Saudi staple but for you to truly appreciate how dates are considered a cultural gem, go pick them yourself. The best farms to experience this can be found in Qassim, around four hours from the capital. However, there are farms within the immediate outskirts where you’ll find date pickers expertly climbing the palms. Approach them and trust us, they will be more than happy to teach you a thing or two and let you give it a try yourself.
A NAJDI BREAKFAST FOR CHAMPIONS We love that in Riyadh you can have a hearty breakfast for less than SR 20. Shakshouka (scrambled eggs with tomatoes), fool and tamees (beans and bread), kebdah (liver sandwich) are a must try. We encourage you to head to a regular hole in the wall but if you’re looking for a proper sit down breakfast, you can try Wadek on Tahliya Street or Bab Al Yemen Bujairy.

Moon Fame
Teaching the (Fun)damentals Necessity is the mother of all invention. This certainly rings true in the case of Moon Fame.
Moon Fame’s story began when its founder, Princess Nouf Bint Miteb, saw a need that must be fulfilled. “As a mother, I wanted to start an activity with my children. To build bonds, open doors and find out what are their interests. What are their passions,” she explained. After bringing up the idea to her sisters, the princess was encouraged to push it even further. She saw that her need mirrored those of many parents in Saudi, and so was the birth of Moon Fame in 2015. 34 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2016

Moon Fame is a nonprofit that organizes children’s events and activities that cultivate creativity, confidence, social skills, entrepreneurship, critical thinking and time management. So, how exactly does it do that?
After a child picks an interest in one of the categories (science, arts and crafts, games, food and beverage, drama, photography, media, or fashion design) and comes up with a project idea, they are assigned a mentor and begin working on their projects at home. This method enables the parents and the child to work together on a project and helps them build their relationship. Meetings with their mentors allow the child to benefit and learn from people who are also passionate in their chosen field.
“Education is more than what a child learns at school. It’s much bigger than that,” stressed the princess as she explained that this process allows the children to explore their interests outside the conventions of a classroom and incentivizes them to learn and research on their own. The next step is Event Day. On this day the children display their projects in an assigned booth and must present and sell it to all attendees of this open family event. This teaches them how to be entrepreneurs and, as an added benefit, helps them break out of their shells. “Social responsibility is one of our main objectives,” she said. At every event, the organization chooses a charity to attend as their special guests and donates all the ticket proceeds to them. Moon Fame also invites several children’s charities to participate in the event’s activities. “To be honest, no matter what we have planned for the future, everyday is a new day to us. We’re always looking to cater to the needs of children and families in Saudi.” Web: moonfame.com DESTINATIONKSA.COM 35

AL DIRIYAH BIRTH OF A NATION To understand your present you must learn about your past. By Areeb Al Shathri
As the second place in Saudi Arabia to be stamped with a UNESCO World Heritage Site label, and the first capital the Kingdom has ever known, Al Diriyah is a must visit for visitors and residents alike.
Located 35 km north-west of Riyadh, Al Diriyah served as the capital for the first incarnation of Saudi Arabia, and was home to its founder Mohammed Bin Saud and his mentor Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdul Wahab.
Since then, Al Diriyah has undergone quite a few changes. With renovations starting as early as the ‘80s, today’s Historical Diriyah is a far cry from the “sand-blown Pompeii” ruins it used to be. Al Bujairy District, which was the home of Mohammed Bin 36 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2016

After the fall of the first Saudi state, and Al Diriyah along with it, residents abandoned the ruins of what once was their city for the nearby settlement of Riyadh.
Abdul Wahab, has recently been opened for the public. With parks, restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops, and a research center dedicated to the area’s former resident the Sheikh, renovations have transformed the half destroyed mud houses into a lively center of activity. Al Turaif, which served as Mohammed Ibn Saud’s family home, is in the process of being transformed into an open-air museum which will include a museum of horses, commerce and finance, war and defense and a traditional market to complete the experience.
Among some of the other sites to check out is the wall. As the final defense line of Al Diriyah, this wall has managed to hold off against the Ottoman and Egyptian forces’ year-long siege in 1818. Al Diriyah stands tall in Saudi’s historic past. The secret in Diriyah’s appeal is that it represents the spirit of KSA. Much like the Kingdom, it was destroyed and burned to the ground twice before. And something tells us that just like the Kingdom, this current and third incarnation of Al Diriyah is here to stay.

MIDDLE EASTERN MYTHS OR MIRACLES Traditional beauty hacks vs. facts. By Areeb Al Shathri
Twas the night before my graduation, and a pimple right between my eyebrows haunted me. I began to panic when my mother, always the resourceful person, decided that myrrh was the only solution. She stood hunched over the sink like a mad scientist in her long floral nightgown, grinding myrrh and mixing it with water. She rubbed the mixture on my forehead overnight. It’s safe to say that I woke with the same pimple that now smelled foul, and access luggage under my eyes, which she also had a cure for. My mom’s concoction didn’t work that time, but it got me wondering. I compiled some of the Middle East’s traditional remedies and, in consultation with an expert, determined whether it was a miracle, or a myth. 50 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2016
Whitening With Lemon We each had lemon slices in our toilets. Twice a day, we would rub the lemon on our knees to whiten them. This routine is priceless in our household, much like the expression on my father’s face when he sees two boxes of lemons on the grocery list.
Expert Verdict: Miracle Our expert says lemon is loaded with vitamin C, which has antioxidants that fight free radicals that result in adult skin. Vitamin C also decreases the production of melanin. It gets rid of the accumulated dead skin cells on the surface of the dermis and tightens the pores.
Nail Biter I was a biter, a nail biter that is. My nails were always too short rendering them weak. She could never get me to stop, so instead she would dip my nails in dill and horsetail soaked in water. The taste would ward me off of biting them.
Expert Verdict: Miracle Our expert Carina Huwari, a pharmacist, says that dill has nailstrengthening agents. It has a high nutritional value of essential oils, fatty oils and mineral salts. As for horsetail it has silica, and is rich in vitamins and minerals as calcium, zinc and B5.
Homemade Mask For Wrinkles One of my mother's proudest achievements, other than her children, is her homemade mask. A strange, and I’m ashamed to say tasty, mixture of honey, cucumber, yogurt and rose water to soften skin and reduce wrinkles.
Expert Verdict: Miracle Honey has antibacterial properties due to high content of sugar. Its antioxidants serve as an anti-aging factor. Rich in water, vitamin E and other nutrients, cucumber provides hydration. The yogurt contains lactic acid, which exfoliates and smoothes the skin.
Despite the large target on my forehead in all my graduation pictures, there is merit in most of the traditional remedies my mother passed on to me. Maybe I should have listened to her more often because three out of four ain’t bad.

A Rally of Yum
AT THE
Food Truck Festival
Our report of the event. You will be impressed!
56 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2016
We're not sure if you've noticed, but we at DR have a very healthy appreciation for food trucks. There's something absolutely enchanting about ordering our quota of yum from a small window of an airstream, or a bus that constantly moves around like a fun city-wide guessing game, and we have never been prouder of our generation than when we saw young Saudis operating and running these themselves.
With that in mind, we made our way to the new Riyadh Food Truck Festival, and we are so glad to report it did not disappoint! The tickets were slightly steep at SR 85, but it did help limit the crowds to those truly interested. Set in Alyamamah University, the festival boasted almost every food truck known in Riyadh, and even a couple of new ones. With the food trucks still working on their licenses to serve the eagerly awaiting public, the festival was an opportunity for everyone to finally catch them in one place. This is a community that’s well on its way to becoming a mainstay in the Riyadh dining scene and we cannot be more excited. Apart from being able to whip out their concoctions for visitors to enjoy, it allowed
these mostly young Saudi business owners to network and open up avenues to get customers. Most of them are only able to park and serve during events or when hired for private gatherings. The trucks that stood out were the Diamond Sponsor, Zeno Pizza, a personal favorite because the concept of pizza on wheels makes us happy, M5m5a, with UNO and Carrom on their tables, Ice Roll, because watching our ice cream being made RIGHT THERE is incredible, Burger Bus, Yummy Potato, Mini Pancakes, and our new obsession: Juicery Street. Juicery Street had the cutest branding and delicious heatsealed awar galb (a popular kuwaiti concoction that literally translates into heart pain).
We came, we saw, we ate, we conquered; immense fun (and food coma) was had by the whole team. We can't wait for the next festival! Food on wheels is our new obsession. foodtruckfestv

Are You Emotionally Well? How many of you think about enhancing your emotional and mental health? By Reem Zahid
What is it?
Mental or emotional wellbeing alludes to your general mental prosperity. It incorporates the way you feel about yourself, the nature of your connections with others, your capacity to oversee sentiments and manage challenges/difficulties, and how much satisfaction and happiness you get from life. Mental and emotional issues regularly emerge when your sensory system has been traded off by the overpowering measures of anxiety, without knowing how to manage it. 64 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2016
Is it normal?
Anybody can experience the ill effects of mental or emotional health issues, and the vast majority of us will. This year alone, around one in seven of us will suffer from a diagnosable mental issue such as gloominess, bipolar issues or moodiness. Regardless of how many people are affected by these problems, most make no effort to enhance their circumstances. We disregard the emotional messages that let us know something isn't right, and take a stab at toughing it out by distracting ourselves or self-medicating. We bottle things up with the expectation that it will heal itself. We don’t realize that these issues have an adverse reaction on our daily lives, and the lives of the people around us. It impacts how we treat the world around us, which in turn impacts how we feel about ourselves.
Know how to handle it.
Being emotionally and mentally healthy doesn't mean failing to go through awful times or encountering passionate issues. Great emotional well-being doesn’t mean lack of sadness or tension, it could be the acquisition of positive qualities such as the ability to adapt to life's difficulties, handle stress, build solid connections and recover from mishaps.
Just as physically healthy individuals are less susceptible to disease or harm, mentally and emotionally healthy individuals are better equipped to handle difficulties and anxiety. They are in control of their conduct and feelings. They are engaged, adaptable and imaginative in terrible times and in great. They can deal with life's difficulties, construct solid connections, and recoup from misfortunes. Enhancing your mental and emotional health boosts your state of mind, builds flexibility and adds to your general happiness regarding life.
Boost up.
Self-love is needed more than anything, and, sadly, it’s the most neglected. Fixing yourself from the inside out is the only way to achieve true happiness. Learn to be solid, to be tough, tougher than life and its downs. Teach yourself how to love yourself and know your own worth first. Be flexible with whatever you face and know everything has an end, and every problem has a solution. Learn that your situation won't get any better by being angry, anxious or dramatic, and that these emotions can destroy you emotionally and mentally.
Life is a challenge that is won by owning it and owning yourself.

What They Don’t Tell You.
Having a baby wasn’t an easy journey. I’ve had my private moments of bawling thinking that motherhood was just not in the cards, while cleverly wearing a poker face. One day, I finally saw the two lines that meant I tested positive. Like a little child learning how to count, I kept repeating to myself “two lines!” So it began; the preparations, classes, readings and one common keyword typed in my Google. After nine months, and right after watching Jon Snow come back to life, my water broke. Giving birth was profoundly exhausting. Yet

I persistently kept asking myself “Why am I not able to enjoy this?” I started to struggle with a cluster of feelings. I was torn by guilt and confusion. Add to the mix the pressure to show everybody how blissful I was. I lost my freedom and was left with this baby who solely dependent on me for everything. While my husband offered every bit of help, I constantly insisted that I was managing well. I didn’t want anyone to think that I need a break from the very thing I prayed for.
When I finally went for my postpartum follow up, I broke down. It was obvious that I had postpartum depression. I had to swallow my pride with the first pill. Things eventually got better. While it’s quite common, some mothers view postpartum depression as taboo, but it’s nothing to feel guilty or ashamed of. Talk to someone close and get professional help if you further require it. Diaries of a Lazy Person Hello, my name is Areeb and I am a recovering lazy person. By Areeb Al Shathri
180-degree
“How lazy can you really be, Areeb?” you ask. Well, my default position has always been at a 180-degree angle. To come to think of it I don’t think I’ve ever watched TV sitting up…
68 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2016
Don’t get me wrong, lazy was working for me. Friends and family knew not to ask me for things that require getting up. I single handedly legitimized “because I’m lazy” as an excuse. So, what’s changed? Well, I made a conscious decision to be less lazy.
I had to reprogram myself not to “ugh” at any form of physical activity. If you’re a fellow lazy person, hop on this ride with me (don’t worry it’s motorized so you don’t have to pedal), and maybe some of these tricks will work for you too.
Ugh #1 If I’m comfortable, I’m not moving. The couch will still be there when you get back. If you’re lazy, literal baby steps is the best way to get more active. If you want something, go and get it. It might not seem like much, but over the course of the day you rack up a little amount of activity (or so says my Apple watch). Slowly, but surely, physical activity will become less daunting.
Ugh #2 Exercise is boring. This still rings true for me, and I hate being bored almost as much as I liked being lazy. My only solution was to trick myself into exercising. If you like a particular sport, practice it! If sports aren’t your thing,
try dancing. Put on a YouTube video tutorial and practice the choreography. It’s okay if you, like me, have no sense of rhythm; the point is to try.
Ugh #3 Gyms are cesspools for self-obsessed humans. The trick is to find the right gym. Gym selection is 50 percent of the problem. Picking the wrong one can make you feel discouraged and hopeless. Find a gym that makes you comfortable. For me, a smaller, more personalized experience helps. It allows you to be on a first name basis with everyone, so your presence and absence is noticed (which is great if you’re lazy and need to be held accountable).
Ugh #4 Being healthy is no fun. You know what’s really fun though? Being able to climb a few flights of stairs without buckling over trying to catch your breath. Make sure the people around you know what you’re trying to do so they can help you stay on track.
In conclusion, I’d like to reiterate my opening sentence and say: Hello, my name is Areeb and I am a recovering lazy person.

Sunan of
Visiting Markets
Read this before your next shopping spree.
The behavior of Muslims is significant since it represents Islam. Muslims have been gifted with the Quran and Sunnah as two major sources of guidance. They are the ultimate source of guidance for being a productive Muslim. As a Muslim, one cannot single out the impact of Sunnah and hence it should be incorporated into our daily lives.
Following are the Sunnan of visiting and dealing in market places.
• Reciting the Dua While Entering the Market The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Whoever enters the market and says: 70 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2016

In His hand is all good and He is Omnipotent over all things. Allah will wipe a million bad deeds from his record and grant him a million good deeds, and will elevate him.’”
• Do Not Be Extravagant While Shopping One should know that extravagance is a sin that is disliked and advised against by the great Allah. “O children of Adam! Attend to your embellishments at every time of prayer, and
eat and drink and be not extravagant; surely He does not love the extravagant.” (Surat Al Araf, Verse 31)
• Set Just Prices for the Products to be Sold
On learning that his companion Bilal had traded poor quality dates for high quality dates, the Prophet (peace be upon him) chided him for deceiving the buyers. Islam has no place for fraud and hoax. Hence, it is sternly advised not to swindle the buyers in the market place. May Allah make us steadfast upon our religion and make us among the inhabitants of Jannah. #CheeseOfEurope: CHEESE AND SWEATER WEATHER Camembert de Normandie, Livarot, Comté… Ooh La La! By Sumaiyya Naseem
DAY 1 Isigny-Sainte-Marie The dairy is located in Normandy, which was once considered one of the largest wetlands in Europe. The dairy farm is known for its butter, cream and cheese, all produced using the rich milk that comes from white and brown Normandy cows. The dairy produces two PDO approved cheeses; the Normandy Camembert and the Pont L’Eveque, the oldest Norman cheese still in production.

The only cheese I ever knew was Almarai spread and the mozzarella on my pizza. The Cheese of Europe trip introduced me to a world of cheese with no limits. Our cheesy expedition was organized by Sopexa Middle East and sponsored by the European Union and CNEIL, the French Dairy Board.
DAY 2 Fromagerie Gaury We made our way to the Dijon Region where we visited the Fromageri Gaury. Raymond and Odette Gaury started the company in late 1940’s. In the ‘50s Raymond Gaury developed a soft cheese using washed rind, inspired by farmers who produced the famous Epoisses and Langres cheeses. Upon its discovery, the cheese gained popularity and is still produced today by Fromagerie Gaury. They are one of the few that still produce raw milk Epoisses.
DAY 3 Fromagerie Janin We journeyed deeper into Burgandy, into the Jura region with the Vosges mountain range in the periphery. Janin is another family run business that has been running for five generations of cheese makers who are passionate about Jura cheeses. They specialize in the PDO Morbier. Fort des Rousses Our next stop was the Fort des Rousses, a cave-like structure that was built in 1841. It was previously used as a military fort near the Swiss border, and once housed 3000 men and 2500 horses. In the late 90’s, the impressive structure was converted into a cheese cellar for Arnaud dairy. The majestic stone arches give a natural “vault effect”, a condition that favors ideal cellar atmosphere for maturing cheese. Large machines are used to regularly flip the cheese on its shelf. The cheese available at Fort des Rousses are the PDO cheeses Comté, Mont d’Or and Morbier.

How should cheese be stored at home? Store it in original wrapping, preferably with vegetables, but no direct contact. You can use food paper or plastic film but not aluminum foil.
Is it okay to eat the cheese rind? The only “rind” you cannot eat is the wax rind of Goudas and aluminum foils for blue cheeses. For all the French cheeses, especially PDO's, try a little bit of the rind and combine it with the middle part if you like the taste.

BAIT AL KATIB Once Home to King Faisal Of a gem hiding in Taif. By Mohammed Mirza
After seeing a photo of Bait Al Katib, my cousin asked, “this is Shobra Palace, right?” It was pretty surprising to me considering that he’s spent much of his life in Taif and has not only never seen it but doesn’t even know about it. To add to that, Bait Al Katib sits right in the heart of the city, in fact quite close to his own residence. The royal mansion sits so inconspicuously that one may just pass by it without even noticing it. A large tree obscures the view to the grandeur that is behind it. Perhaps the place may soar 82 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2016
in popularity once its doors are thrown open to tourists, especially amongst those who want more from Taif apart from the regular amusement parks and farm excursions.
Famous for being home to King Faisal, Bait Al Katib is one of the most remarkable historic structures in the city, second only to the Shobra Palace in terms of historic architecture.
COURTESY PHOTO/ MOHAMMED MIRZA
On our trip to it we first stopped over at a historic fort near Ash Shafa, which was much of a disappointment to us. What was left of the fort were its outer walls, some of which manage to stand despite years of rain, winds and encroachments. Turns out that we shouldn’t have followed the GPS to the fort as it was easily accessible via the main road that connects Ash Shafa to Taif. The GPS showed us a way through rough terrain, which felt even more rough in a sedan. Despite our GPS letting us down on our earlier visit to the fort, we still continued to abide by the GPS to take us to Bait Al Katib. This time it led us DESTINATIONKSA.COM 83
straight to the mansion. We hardly found any markings to it on the way. Right in front of it however was a board set up by the SCTA giving a brief description of the monument. There were school buses parked all around the house and a few people were sitting in its shade. It was one of those rare warm days in Taif. Though its wooden windows have faded in color, they still manage to create a striking contrast to the whitewashed walls. The lush trees just add to the composition. The structure is heavily influenced by ancient Roman architecture; the Roman pillars are an example of such. However, it’s not only limited to that as the building also carries Islamic designs and elements of archetypal Hijazi architecture as well. Bait Al Katib was constructed over a century ago in around 1897 AD by Mohammed Bin Abdul Wahed, a clerk of the Emir of the Hijaz. Taking 84 DESTINATION RIYADH DECEMBER 2016
around three years to build, the house heavily used the expertise of Turkish builders in using a combination of stone, lime and wood. The three storied palace is believed to have 45 rooms and was once surrounded by farms and orchards. The farms and orchards have been pushed away to the outskirts of the city and only a small garden can be seen next to the mansion. A few decades after its construction Bait Al Katib housed King Faisal when he was the viceroy of the Hijaz. It was eventually abandoned in the late 1960s and continues to remain in that state to this very day, except for the visitors picnicking in the luxuriant garden next to it. As per a news report in an Arabic daily, a Spanish company has been handed over the restoration works for the
mansion. Once restored it is to house a center for history. The main entrance of the mansion is on the rear side, next to a girl’s school, whose buses have surrounded the parking spots around the mansion. The palace seems to have been whitewashed recently, the cracks in its walls hiding behind the coated paint. But apart from its Roman columns one of its most striking features are its windows, arched and beautifully crafted. The niches of windows on each floor are distinctive from the others. Definitely, a sight worth seeing in the unofficial summer capital of the country. COORDINATES 21.268861, 40.399694

THE STORY BEHIND THE SAUDI ARABIAN
NATIONAL ANTHEM Where did it come from? By Mohammed Mirza
The roots of the Saudi national anthem can be traced back to the year 1947, when King Abdulaziz was on a visit to Egypt. Next, the Egyptian composer Abdul Rahman Al Khateeb was approached to create a national anthem for Saudi Arabia and the tune of Aash Al Malek (Long Live the King) was born.
Fahd, poet Ibrahim Al Khafaji wrote the lyrics in 1984, which is the one that is still in use today. In current vernacular trend, the Saudi national anthem is referred to as Saar’ey, based on its incipit which literally means ‘hasten’.
It was officially adopted as the national anthem in 1950 but carried no lyrics at that time.
Hasten, To glory and supremacy. Glorify the Creator of the heavens
The music in the anthem carried a typical Arabian fanfare style, similar to the national anthems of other Arab states. The brass instrument version that we hear today is a later change made by Saudi musician Seraj Omar. Lyrics were added in 1958 that were written by Mohammed Talat, but these were rarely heard.
