And the bad news is that our wallets and purses are about to become more heavy and bulky. We especially like the 5-riyal note the most because it’s purple and has flowers.

with Sultan Batterjee Letting purpose (of your idea) be your main driver. Inhabiting a disparate business philosophy, Sultan Batterjee, founder of Lifestyle Developers, connects our increasingly globalized world with national progress. Conveying an idea like no other in the Kingdom, Lifestyle aims to deliver to the Saudi society an innovative method of living, one that could possibly introduce a revolutionary change in the local market. Looking to establish progressive ideologies within the local minds, Lifestyle Developers extends beyond providing modern homes, rather reforming the standards of living by adhering to their four core elements: design, quality, affordability, and community.

“We developed a project able to initiate dialogue between the product and consumer. Lifestyle Developers speaks to people now. It allows people to access a lifestyle for instant gratification, and not one of promising future visions. Lifestyle Developers achieves to communicate with standards not attainable anywhere else 16 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2017 ADVERTORIAL

Addressing the absence of relatable or reachable products created a sense of responsibility and respect towards mankind, as Batterjee explains:

purpose is entrenched in the company’s values and culture, further extending it out to its own employees, the market, and ultimately, society.

Batterjee is lobbying for cultural awareness through selling a product that is designed to implement change in the lives of those who invest in it while also challenging the market’s standards.

because the market does not aim for the same enlightening objectives we are hoping to reach.”

Lifestyle truly believe in carrying businesses with a higher purpose, rather suggesting it as the key of success to a prosperous business. Batterjee advocates for establishing a strong commonality between the organization, its employees, and consumers by this purpose, stating: “A business that has a purpose tends to succeed. If a business intends for purely accumulating profits, it might succeed in the short term but will die in the long term. My advice for entrepreneurs

Further explaining the power behind the nation’s 70 percent youth, Batterjee stresses the importance of embodying policies and infrastructures that maintain and attract the youth’s requirements for living- not simply surviving. Adding that the possibility of losing young talent can take the country backwards: “We realized, in order for Lifestyle Developers to capture this segment, we must create an emotional bonding and belonging. Therefore, we had to break the barriers between tradition and reform in order to retain the youth, retain the knowledge, and retain the talent as these individuals could be easily lost to a place that offers what they’re searching for.” As the objective is to raise the standards of living, this

is to build a business with a purpose, a purpose you believe in and relate to. Having a purpose connects you to your organization and with the people you’re working with, establishing identified values and a culture one could belong to. It will make people journey with you until that purpose is turned into a reality.” Web: lifestyledevelopers.com

Marcens’ Marketing ideas one thread at a time.

It’s easy to feel discouraged when you have an idea but not the support to make it happen. How do I get started? How do I let people know about my business? How can I get

people to invest in my idea? So many questions, so little budget. Don’t worry about it too much though because, as always, we’ve got you covered.

Dream Weavers

Meet the team that’s going to change your life. As a sister company to Nithar, Marcens is also a creative agency, but with a twist. While others are chasing big money clients, Marcens is dedicated to the little guy. This marketing, branding and events agency offers services for startups and up-andcoming businesses that need a little support to implement their ideas. Often times, young entrepreneurs with an idea hesitate to contact creative agencies because they know they can’t afford the steep price tag attached. Some give up, and some outsource to agencies nearby that offer startup support. Marcens believes that homegrown talent should be nurtured on Saudi soil, and we’re inclined to agree.

What makes them different? Well for one thing, the price tag. “We’ll help you out, then worry about the money later,” isn’t just a phrase sketchy mobsters use, it’s also Marcens’ calling card. Their aim is to help you bring your ideas to life and help you get on your feet. As an agency with an agenda of social responsibility, Marcens will ask you for affordable service fees when things take off. Another advantage Marcens has is their accessibility. They aren’t a bunch of stuffy old men in suits who only accept 30-page briefs. This group of highly motivated young professionals will make sure you have representatives that

represent you. They’re young, enthusiastic risk-takers who will think outside the box to get you to where you need to be.

What services do they offer? Their services include filling in the gaps: strategy and consulting, startup support, digital branding and design, creative strategy, creative events and marketing.

How can I get in touch with these guys? Marcens has made this even easier. Their website provides all the information you may need in one page. You can even pitch your ideas straight from there! Web: marcens.com

WHO’S WHO

THE FIRST

Our exclusive interview with Sahara Net CEO and partner, Haitham Bu Aisha. By Arwa Al Mousa

Tell us how Sahara Net began.

With that, I decided to leave university altogether and focus on the business. In 1989, we established one of the first Saudi Arabian bulletin board systems (BBS), which is basically a server that users connect to and exchange messages. In 1998, we were among the first four companies to get licensed by the government to provide internet services and were the first to actually start operating in the Kingdom.

22 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2017

We worked hard and developed fully as a company in 1994 when we officially registered our sahara. com domain. We were the first internet service provider (ISP) to offer internet services to the public in the country.

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD

I was a senior student of IT at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) when my colleague Kais Al Essa and I decided to start Sahara Net in 1988.

Did you have a lot of support during your journey? My partner Kais and my father were endless wells of support, as were my friends. In 2004, due to the state of the market at that time, we faced serious financial trouble and competitors like Saudi Oger Ltd., SBG, Mobily and STC were lining up against us. We had a lot of debt and the company was about to go bankrupt. And that’s when my friends did the most amazing thing: they partnered with us and provided the financial support that saved us and kept us going.

Did you ever think about getting financial help from banks? I am a firm believer in selffinancing. I learned this from Najeeb Al Zamil, back when he was my office neighbor in the late ‘80s. He had this huge library and I would visit him every day to read books. He advised me never to seek bank loans and, thanks to that advice,we stand strong today because we relied on ourselves and our community.

How do you feel about families that oppose entrepreneurship and instead encourage their children to look for stable jobs? Actually, I strongly advise people to gain practical job experience before deciding to

run their own business. This was something I learned the hard way. I quit school at a young age and employed people who were older, with advanced degrees and had a lot more experience than myself. But, I had no chance to have the observational learning one experiences from being an employee. I always had to be the boss and only learned things through trial and error and with less support than I would’ve liked.

Tell us about the services you provide. Our largest and primary service continues to be internet hosting. Recently we branched off two companies: Sahara Consultancy (Sahara CC) and Tamkeen Networks. The first focuses on integrated technology (such as augmented reality) to deliver interactive solutions for education, businesses, brands and agencies. The second

is specialized in industrial products, technology sales and retail merchandising. We are currently working on branching off a third company that will focus on one of our other major areas, information security services, to be launched late 2017.

What’s next for Sahara Net? We are working to take the company public and offer stocks on the market. We’re also looking to invest in startups and are keeping an eye out for creative entrepreneurs to partner with.

Any last message for our readers? I want to see more startups and innovative ideas coming from our young Saudis. I believe in you and want you to realize that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. Don’t waste any time: strive to take what you have and make it better. Web: sahara.com

Influencing Change We sat down with Enas Al Henti, the woman behind Bravo Shbab. By Reem Zahid

Enas Al Henti earned her bachelor's degree in business administration from King Abdulaziz University and a master's degree in business management from the University of Lavern in California. After she graduated, she returned to Saudi Arabia and created a non-profit organization named Bravo Shbab which aims to help young Saudi minds get into building businesses and discovering their talents; which makes them create their own businesses later on. 24 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2017

List five words that describe your character: Determined, initiator, well spoken, giving, active.

Could you describe one of your typical workdays? I don't have a certain routine in my life. I develop my organization constantly depending on available opportunities. In the moments I have ideas, I isolate myself to organize my thoughts and outline them and produce it in an appropriate way. I participate in supporting activities for the purpose of the organization and we collaborate with many places. We try to always keep up with society and the latest trends with the youth.

What was your greatest failure, and what did you learn from it?

What kind of personality do you work best with and why?

My greatest failure is that I wasted many years listening to negative people and now only surround myself with positive thinkers and dismiss any person that gives negative comments without any suggestions.

People who are initiators and opportunity seekers are those that we strive to work with. Also those who strive to improve themselves and accept change because they will achieve their goals faster and become successful. Their success is my success.

What are three positives and negatives that social media gave you? The pros are reaching goals and people quickly, which leads to quick development and progress. Two cons are that it is a big responsibility to take on and it is time consuming.

Is there someone you wish you could work with one day? Prince Mohammad bin Salman. Mob: +966-506890316 Web: bravoshbab.com bravoshbab

Tell me about your proudest achievement? Bravo Shbab is quickly expanding and has a good voice with Saudi and Middle Eastern society but it still has not reached the level of success I have aimed to reach.

We all want to know how did you start and is Bravo Shbab your final stop or you want to go further more? I launched Bravo Shbab via social media to give Saudi youth who have created small successful businesses a platform. Bravo Shbab extended its services to marketing, training, giving workshops and counseling. It is not my final stop. We have much more projects coming in the future, one of them will be coming in two months. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 25

REALLY TRYING We present to you Destination’s guide to job satisfaction. By Areeb Al Shathri

26 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2017

Applying for a job is a daunting prospect. If you’re a newcomer to the process, it’s very easy for you to feel frustrated or rejected. Don’t. Nine times out of 10 you don’t get a response, but all you really need is the one. So don’t take rejections personally. You never know, maybe being turned down for a particular job frees you up for the one around the corner.

THE BEFORE Your CV is more than just your first impression; it is everything. Make sure your

CV is, as the Queen would say, flawless. Here are some pitfalls most people fall into that might damage your prospects.

PROOFREAD YOUR CV. You have no idea how much spelling and grammatical

STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMMED DEGHAISHM

WITHOUT

mistakes affect how the employer sees you. Double and triple check your CV to avoid giving the impression that you are careless. Do not embellish, especially when it comes to previous positions you’ve held. Most employers see right through it. You also run the risk of being called out on it when they contact your previous employers to confirm. Most CVs are at most a few pages long; if you can’t make sure its infallible, how can an employer trust you with an entire report.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR CV. One-size-fits-all should not apply to your CV. Tailor your CV for each job you’re applying to. Avoid including irrelevant skills such as singing and dancing. This gives the employer the impression that this position is the only one you’re after.

Salem Ali

We can’t believe this still needs to be said. Make sure your email address is professional. Sousou55 or prettyeyes91 doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

THE DURING Now that you’ve landed a job, where do you go from here?

First off, get to know your company, your boss and your colleagues. If your job is hyper professional, don’t show up in jeans and t-shirt or vice-versa. Do not just meet expectations; surpass them. A good piece of advice from the publishing world is to always “under promise and over deliver.” Remember, the bare minimum is not the way to impress, especially if you want to keep your job or advance further.

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 27

THE AFTER So what if you’re not sure you want to keep the job you have? This is where a lot of

people reach a roadblock: How do I know if this is the right job? There are some signs that are universal to a certain degree. We’ll point them out for you in the stylings of Jeff Foxworthy.

MAYBE IT’S TIME TO QUIT YOUR JOB IF

• Your job does not let you explore your full potential.

• You’re uncomfortable

• Your duties have increased but your pay hasn’t.

• You’re not passionate about the work you do.

• Your job is your main source of stress, and it’s spilling over to your personal life.

• You dread going to work every morning.

• You do not agree with the company’s vision or goal.

voicing your opinion or ideas.

• You’re constantly checking the clock. • You don’t like your boss/ coworkers or they make you feel uncomfortable. • You cannot be honest with the people around you.

28 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2017

If the above mostly doesn’t apply to you, congratulations! You have found a place you’re comfortable in. Welcome to the ranks of the happily employed people. There aren’t that many of us, so please try to stay

amongst us longer. Keep up the good work, and don’t mess this up! However, if most of these apply to you, then it’s probably time to make a move. Keep in mind that if you do decide to quit you must maintain professionalism until the very end. If you have given in your notice, don’t slack. Show up for work until the last day and keep delivering your best effort in everything you do. There’s nothing worse than burning a bridge while you’re still in the process of crossing it.

AROO! AROO! AROO!

Saudi Arabia’s first ever Spartan Race. By Jou Pabalate

We ran, climbed, crawled and survived to tell the tale… and even made history while doing it. — Jou Pabalate

46 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2017

The energy at the Dirab Motor Park on Dec. 17 was undeniable. Men and children of all ages gathered to tough it out and declare themselves Spartans for the first ever obstacle course in Riyadh. Prince Abdullah bin Musaed, President of the General Sports Authority, was in attendance and highlighted the significance of the event, stating that it provides a glimpse of the promising future of sports in the Kingdom.

For those unfamiliar with the Spartan Race, it just happens to be one of the most fun, challenging, and exhilarating sports competition out there. Events like this happen all around the world, each one designed to test a participant’s athleticism, grit, and power. But apart from the physical rigor it brings out in people, it also promotes and fosters a sense of camaraderie, teamwork and develops one’s will power.

STAFF PHOTO/NAWAF AL FARRAJ

Various gyms, sports clubs, and companies participated as teams during the race, making it both a competitive yet team building event.

KEEP THIS IN MIND For those who were not able to join, worry not -- you have a chance to get down and dirty this coming February in Jeddah!

Brought to us by the General Sports Authority and Spartan Race Arabia, the event was an adrenaline pumping and good vibes inducing day. Enthusiasm was high and people came not just to partake but also watch it all unfold. A carnival area with food trucks, a variety of local sellers, sponsors booths made for a fun day for families and spectators. We have to give a shout out to the Char Grill Food Truck for serving up a mean cheeseburger that left our team craving more. It was fascinating to find a huge turn-out of participants during race day. It signals just how ready Riyadh is for a new chapter of health and fitness. We were greatly impressed by the no-quitting attitude of Riyadhis and participants from all over the Kingdom, including some who traveled all the way from Jeddah and Sharqiya to take part.

The Spartan Race is the kind of event we want to see more and we’re confident that sooner rather than later, every city will be yelling: Aroo! Aroo! Aroo! Web: spartanrace.com

LITTLE SHOPS, BIG CITY Discovering little shops containing gems. By Duha Al Hosainy

Taking a trip to downtown Riyadh and discovering little shops is every Riyadhi’s sweet triumph. We’re digging a little deeper this time, visiting the shops you’ll want to spend hours in, and having a conversation with the people behind them. Each one walking you through their peculiar lives, and if you’re lucky, they’ll serve you tea as well.

Mohammed Hussain is a Yemeni living in Saudi, his second home. An Iranian carpets and antiques merchant for 34 years, he acquired his impressive collection by selling antique weapons and fell in love with the history they hold. Soon after that his store turned into a time capsule. While providing education for his children he passed his entrepreneurship talents to them. Taking after their father, they opened up shops of their own. Although Abu Murad is illiterate, he is in a continuous journey of discovery, currently learning English when he goes back home. Over three decades later his shop became every Riyadhi’s go-to place for candy. Among his staff you’ll find his sons, applying their father’s teachings during any spare time they have. In 1999, he opened a new store managed by his brother, turning his small shop into a family trade. Words of Wisdom: “Every person should work with their own hands.”

His adventure started in 1985 after his sheep ran away while taking a catnap. He then took off towards Riyadh to join the army only to discover that working at a desk job pays better. Upon taking the job he learned the tricks of the trade and got promoted to a carpenter. Not long after, he invested his money in a typewriter and started writing legal documents and official letters for contractors. Words of Wisdom: “Contractors are thieves!”

TUCKED AWAY AL BURJ Faris Alyahya

TAMIMI PUMPKIN PIE

EATALY IS HERE

Al Burj is one of the cleanest, freshest, most well-constructed falafel sandwiches you’ll ever have. They claim their way is the shami way of making falafel, sans boiled egg, but they do add mint which I found to be an excellent touch that greatly elevates the taste. Al Burj has been around for 30 years and I’ve personally known this place for as long as I could remember to the point that I took it for granted and haven’t been there since I was a child. You must try it and pray for me and for the people responsible for it. They also make excellent fatayer! Zaatar and safeeha laham with pomegranate molasses are my favorite. They open at 7 a.m. all week and there’s no seating. Oh and they don’t serve falafel on Friday mornings. Sigh. Location: Al Sulaimanyah

Eataly is open! The restaurant opened its doors to much fanfare, and with the crowds it seems nigh impossible to get a table for lunch. Good news though, they open for breakfast too!

FRESH OUTTA THE KITCHEN Rakan Aloraifi’s culinary journey. By Areeb Al Shathri

The story we’re about to tell you is a story about a young man discovering his yellow brick road just off the corner of expectation and circumstance.

It was at this point that Aloraifi fell in love with the slippery kitchen. “I never really liked office work. I always wanted to make something with my hands, I just didn’t know what.” For three months, he worked in his own business’s kitchen. Like a little kid with a new passion, Aloraifi dove 64 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2017

into the world of cooking pretty hard. He considered the option of going back to school and getting a BA in culinary arts, but was advised against it by other chefs. Instead, Aloraifi hopped on a flight to California to study the basics in an institute.

He began trying to learn everything he could, starting with Japanese cuisine. Japanese cuisine is arguably one of the toughest cooking styles there is. “If I can learn and perfect the Japanese techniques, I could learn anything,” Aloraifi said,

STAFF PHOTO/NAwAF ALFARRAJ

Rakan Aloraifi had graduated university with a marketing degree and, like a lot of men in his position, decided to start his own business. He was in his third attempt, a healthy fast food restaurant, when, like most starting businesses, they encountered a few hiccups. A shortage of staff had left their kitchen without a cook, and last time we checked you need at least one of those. With no other option, Aloraifi stepped in, aproned up and fired up the stove.

Whenever I prepare a dish, I want people to taste the passion that went into it. I never want to cook food for the sake of serving. — Rakan Aloraifi

explaining his choice. Equipped with a new arsenal of techniques, he began circulating the Riyadh food scene looking for a restaurant where he can hone his newly acquired skills. His journey with Yokari, the ultra hip Japanese restaurant in Centria,

began when he was hired as a part time employee. Life as a part-timer in a kitchen wasn’t as easy as he initially thought. “In general cooking, as a trade, is tiresome. It’s long hours and low pay,” said Aloraifi explaining Saudis’ lack of interest in cooking.

The harder it got, the more passionate Aloraifi became. Yokari took notice of his eagerness, and took him on full time as a sushi chef. As time passed, they began to shuffle him around the kitchen to expose him to as many tasks as possible. And like a thirsty sponge dropped into the ocean, Aloraifi soaked up as much knowledge as he could. His diligence did not go unnoticed and after a year at Yokari, Aloraifi was promoted to Chef De Partie, assuming the responsibilities of a kitchen. Aloraifi now has his eyes set on Chinese cuisine, and then onto Italian. “My plan is to move from kitchen to kitchen until I feel I am confident enough in all of them. After that, I plan on opening my own restaurant.” Rakansss

Business Break Café

Between Concept and Execution

Our meeting with the faces behind the project. By Johara Almogbel

Located in very busy Tamkeen Tower, the iBusiness Break Café immediately caught our eye the minute we walked in. Can you tell us a little about yourselves? Fahad Turkstani -

Entrepreneur with MSc in management and international business, in addition to great experiences in HR and PR.

Salman Fallatah - English diploma with over 10 years’ experience in cafe operation. Majed Turkstani - Business administration, with good experience in the health sector.

What’s the concept behind the iBusiness Break Café?

The creation of a unique, innovative business environment that will differentiate iBusiness Break from other cafes.

What inspired the concept?

As an entrepreneur, my meetings with the clients were mostly in cafes which weren't equipped with office furniture. Thus, we came up with iBusiness Break Cafe to be the public work place for those who need that. And then, with our great team, the idea developed to become the iBusiness Break Café, the formation of an environment that will bring people with diverse interests and backgrounds together in a common forum.

Do you plan on expanding any time soon? Yes, we do. As soon as we sign with an investor.

What, in your opinion, is the most difficult part of the process of opening the café? Selecting the location.

What’s your favorite drink?

The Italian Latte. I believe we all agree on that.

One thing you’d change if you had the opportunity to go back in time.

Mohammed Al Gelaish & The Red Nose Buddies It takes a special kind of person to dedicate their life to serving others.

68 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2017

In a time of utter superficiality, it is inspiring to see that our society still cares. Mohammed Al Gelaish is a college student at King Saud University studying clinical nutrition. He is also a member of The Red Nose Buddies; a group that works towards giving children a fair chance at childhood. Recently, he set out to ride his bicycle from Riyadh to Dammam to raise awareness. As an active cyclist, he thought of using his ability to gain attention and bring recognition to the neglect and abuse that children in hospitals endure.

In doing this, he and The Red Nose Buddies hope to accomplish many things, including: • Improving the health of children and support their families to afford the best health programs. • Providing special classes at hospitals to give chronically ill children and their families the knowledge they need. • Giving children a voice to fight for their rights, stopping families from neglecting and violently abusing them.

We will continue to look for all the reasons behind child abuse and neglect and basically try to solve as many reasons as we can. Children are the source of our future, so make sure to raise them up strongly instead of breaking them up badly. — Mohammed Al Gelaish

Sara Al Siddiqi, a fourth year medical student at King Saud University, was the person behind the initiative. The Red Nose Buddies group was created after being inspired by the movie ‘‘Patch Adams’’ starring Robin Williams. She found great response to her idea, and from there, the team of medical students and doctors started their journey towards making every child’s life one worth living. Stay up-to-date with their stories and accomplishments. Email: rednosebuddies@gmail.com rednosebuddies

SPIRITUALITY

GET MORE RIZQ-Y n e tha r o m is Rizq oney. just m ahra By Z

er Anw

Rizq (provision/sustenance) is not just confined to money in our bank account, status, business or food. It is far more extensive. The provisions of Allah may be in having tranquility, guidance, a smile on your face, your parents’ love, your spouse’s support, your child’s obedience, good friends who are always there for you, having respect of people around you and anything that gives you comfort and uplifts your spirits. Everything that we have is rizq from our Creator, as He says in the Quran: “Verily, Allah is the AllProvider.” [Quran, 51:58] Here are the ways mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah where Allah promises us an increase in rizq. 70 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2017

1 BEING MINDFUL OF ALLAH AND TRUSTING HIM “And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.” [Al Talaaq 65:2-3]

2 GRATITUDE And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.” (Quran, 14:7)

3 SEEKING FORGIVENESS And said, “Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers. And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.” (Quran, 71:12)

5 MAINTAINING THE TIES OF KINSHIP “Whoever would like his rizq (provision) to be increased and his life to be extended, should uphold the ties of kinship.” (Bukhari 2067 and Muslim 2557)

“His rizq (provision) to be increased” means to be expanded and made abundant or, it was said, to be blessed (barakah). An Nawawi

6 MAKING DU’A Du’a is a very important way to expand ones provision as the Prophet of Allah (PBUH) has told us that nothing can change the Divine decree except du’a. (Narrated by Ahmad, 5/677)

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to say after Fajr prayer: “O Allah, I ask you for good (halal) provision, beneficial knowledge and accepted good deeds.” (Ibn Majah 925)

4 INCREASING IN CHARITY Spending on charity does not decrease wealth and only blesses it. “Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned.”(Quran, 2:245)

7 PERFORMING HAJJ OFTEN WIPES OUT POVERTY The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Perform Hajj and ‘Umrah successively for they remove poverty and sins just as fire removes the impurities of iron.” (Tirmithi and Ibn Majah) DESTINATIONKSA.COM 71

The Village

That Hangs Off a Cliff Living on the edge in Habalah.

Baboons resting under a peculiar looking stone.

By Mohammed Mirza

There are many stories about why the village was built in such a dangerous location; the last place one would expect to find habitation. The widely held opinion is that the location was used so as to hide from the invading armies of the Ottomans. 82 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2017

STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMMED MIRZA

Fog brushes the walls of the ghost town giving it an even spookier look. Visitors who reach the edge of the cliff up top are unable to see the village that exists on the cliffface right below them. That is how concealed it is, and that has helped the village remain a mystery for a long time.

Sitting at around 40 kilometers from Abha, we drove through the majestic mountains of Asir, passing through some of the best landscape the country has to offer. The climate was pleasant, as it usually is in Abha, where you can roll down the windows and enjoy crisp mountain air. We passed some amazing historic dwellings, but because they are found so frequently in and out of Abha, we eventually stopped being fascinated by them. When we reached the edge of the cliff face, its steep vertical drop left us perplexed. There were other mountains rising from the mountainous landscape around it adding to the beauty of the sight. I looked down from the farthest point that the barriers on the precipice allowed me and from there I saw a few houses of the ghost town.

A house in Habalah.

The inhabitants of the village lived in the area until the ‘70s, but then moved to a much safer location above on flat ground. A tourist resort is built near the parking lot from where one can go on a cable car ride to Habalah, which as of now is the only means to access the isolated abode. The cable car plunges 300 meters downwards to get to the base of the village. The irony is that even in the past the only way to reach the village was a rope. Hence the name Habalah, derived from

the Arabic word for rope, habal. For the village, the rope was the sole tie to the outside world. The tourist resort has decent options when it comes to food and has a few rides including a ferris wheel that gives an even better view of the area. The ride on the cable car is not long and the village itself is pretty small with only around a dozen houses in the entire village.

The village itself was inhabited about 300 years ago and was to a large extent self-sufficient with fruit, vegetable and livestock, all 84 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2017

raised on terraced plots of land. Whatever else they needed was then hauled by ropes and pulleys on large iron buckets from the edge of the cliff. Though the farms have long gone, one can still see the terraced lands and pockets

When visiting Habalah, bear in mind it is not a secluded village that remains untouched by time. It’s definitely not a place where you’d expect to walk through and feel like you are traversing through an openair museum - there are other villages in Asir for that. But the main draw to Habalah is the scenic view and its unique location. It’s a place bound to be intriguing for foreign tourists as well.

THE PORTUGUESE CONNECTION The Portuguese rule over the Arabian Gulf. By Mohammed Mirza

Just like much of the world after the European Renaissance, Arabia has been subject to European colonialism as well. Parts of what is modern day Saudi Arabia once fell into the ambitious hands of colonial powers.

1506 AD • The Portuguese first appear in the Gulf and invade Hurmoz in Iran.

The Portuguese sought to influence a major portion of maritime trade in the region and profit from the pearling industry. After the Portuguese invaded the Arabian Gulf, Hurmoz in Iran served as their base.

1549 AD •

Conquered Qatif, Bahrain and some islands belonging to the Jabrid Dynasty.

Ottomans defeated the Portuguese in Yemen and Oman.

1625 AD •

Present Day •

The Portuguese entirely lost their last bastion in Hurmoz, Iran.

Aside from the Portuguese built fort in Tarout Island, little remains of the Portuguese era.

Before the arrival of the Ottomans, a local revolt in Qatif managed to rout the Portuguese. The Ottomans had arrived after the locals called out for help.
