It promoted the idea of the community of artists, art lovers and art collectors; a community that not only grew during the festival, but also beyond it.

LITTERING SAYS A LOT ABOUT US! We personally witnessed how clumsily people leave their mess after them when we visited lakes in Riyadh recently for our story. As if blinded by the readily available bins everywhere, somehow the lake was treated as a dumpster. First off, stop pointing fingers and blaming the government or the cleaners because they too can not make the change if the people aren’t cooperating. An eyesore such as this stems from the people themselves and only by becoming more responsible, ethical, and considerate, this problem can be solved. Next, treat outdoors like you would treat your homes. But the question is, do you really keep your house clean?!

BUSINESS

WHO’S WHO

Business Transformation Murhaf BuKhamseen, a biz whiz in everything from construction to restaurants! By Hajer Al Alwan

Tell us about yourself.

I am a manager, planner, strategist and businessman. I graduated from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. I joined my family business in 1992 for three years under our construction department, before I went to the US and earned my MBA with a specialty in finance.

How did you start your business career?

Are you still using your engineering background? I am, but to a limited extent. Being an engineer allows me to think in the sense of how engineers think. I don’t let any piece of information pass me without analyzing and scrutinizing it.

16 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2017

As soon as I came back from the US and agreed with my brothers to overhaul the company. I can proudly say that we took the ready mix concrete company from two small plants to nearly 30 plants within the span of 15 years, becoming one of the leading companies in the business.

What are the services you provide in ETE?

I’m happy and proud to see many young Saudis becoming much more confident and aware of the developing environment around them. — Murhaf BuKhamseen

Although Eastern Trading & Contracting Establishment (ETE) is mostly concerned with construction, building and engineering, it is still considered to be one of the most diversified construction groups. We provide services in construction and engineering, building materials, real estate, and even investment. Recently we started the cornerstone of our latest sector, food and entertainment, by opening Big Chefs restaurant. We are also preparing for the opening of Operation Falafel.

everywhere. We can only find projects that are small to medium sized. In order to adapt to this kind of change while being a group of our size, we unfortunately had to face a great decline in manpower. Many of our colleagues at the company were asked to leave even though we treasured their contribution to our growth. We knew that without being agile and adaptive we wouldn’t be able to sustain our leading market position.

What advice would you like to give to your readers about the What are the plans for ETE journey to success? Work hard, work hard and in the near future? Apart from trying to diversify our sources of income, our goal is to become linear and trim some of the fat we have accumulated over time.

Any challenges you’d like to highlight?

We are in a highly competitive business, and that’s why you really need to adapt to any new market conditions. There were projects of a certain size that required us to work as a group (regardless of department or division) in order to meet the high demands of the project. A big example of that would be the Riyadh Metro project, which is one of the biggest projects in Saudi and the biggest public transportation project in the world at the moment. Gone are the days when you can find mega projects

work hard. Believe in yourself and keep learning because without education you can’t reach anywhere. The secret to success is the willingness to take risks and learn from our failures. In fact, I think that without failing, we can never really succeed.

Final thoughts?

I think the Saudi youth are working hard to get involved in the business sector. They’re becoming more aware of the fast-evolving and developing environment, and the growth possibilities. The country needs their involvement and the kingdom is supportive of startups, so I encourage the young generation to adapt to a realistic business module and be courageous enough to take a chance with their idea. BUSINESS

How’s Your Savings Plan Get your first installment out of the way.

18 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2017

?

Whether it’s for living or investment purposes, buying real estate is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make. It is common knowledge that the majority of buyers cannot afford to make a full payment for real estate in a single transaction. Thus, they turn to real estate financing paid in installments between 15 and 30 years. In this respect, the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) issued a mandate to lower the cost of the required first installment from 30 percent to 15 percent. This is one of the first steps that SAMA is taking towards alleviating the citizen’s acquisition of real estate financing, which in time aims to directly solve the housing crisis. Engineer Hattan Tasji, Head of the Real Estate Investments Department at SEDCO Holding Group, said, “Implementing the initiative is in the pipeline and the goal is to approve about 85,000 applicants and finalize their mortgage loans with banks.”

It is necessary to provide a plan that illustrates the desired amount of savings one month at a time.

Here are the six optimal ways to provide the first installment: 1. Save

This step is one of the most difficult steps, yet it’s just as effective. Saving helps avoid loan costs or losses from the sale of some assets. On the other hand, it takes longer than any other alternative.

2. Sell Assets

It might be considered wise to sell high value assets, such as gold, in order to pay for the first installment. This can help avoid debt or the time it would take to save.

3. Give Up Leisure Time

While it may be difficult, giving up leisure investments, such as traveling, is a necessary sacrifice. It would be wise to save the money intended for a vacation and save it for the prospects of owning real estate.

4. Borrow from Friends or Family

The above options are not always easy to achieve. If you find them difficult to apply, borrowing money from friends or family can be an option to pursue. Although it is considered a loan, it is an interest-free loan that does not require fees. It has the benefit of a bank sans the formality.

5. Acquire a Loan from Work

Another option is to acquire a loan from your employing company. The method to repay is through deducting monthly installments over a given period. This option will require you to budget your monhtly expenses. Ensure that you set a proper agreement with your employer in advance so you're protected. The employee loan option benefits both parties; employees are able to manage their expenses, and they stick around and stay more focused on the job.

6. Acquire Personal Financing

Acquiring personal financing to pay for the first installment is considered the least effective in terms of savings. However, personal financing can be important when there are no other opportunities to obtain from the previous steps. Subsequently, interest and fees will be applied. The Author: Hattan Tasji Engineer Hattan Tasji is the director of local and international Real Estate Investments at SEDCO Holding Group. He looks at land/property developments, divestment, income portfolios, asset allocations, and joint ventures.

ECHOES OF A COMMUNITY: AL GHATT A beacon of local tourism. By Jou Pabalate

Dr. Salman Al Sudairy

Nestled 240 kilometers northwest of Riyadh and hidden behind the Qassim highway is the small town of Al Ghatt. If you’re wondering how to find it, keep an eye out for the gigantic tea and Arabic coffee pots at the exit. If you sight those, take the exit and drive through the mountains and watch the town of Al Ghatt unfold before you.

Passing through new Al Ghatt, you’ll be surrounded by luscious green landscaping and well-kept grounds and litter-free pavements. Children here are taught by schools to plant their own trees, creating a connection between them and their hometown. On the horizon, date trees line up on the foreground of cliffs. This is a rural community on its way to pursuing development but not at the cost of its natural habitat’s beauty. 20 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2017

STAFF PHOTO/NAWWAF AL FARRAJ

Al Ghatt derives its name from the powerful floods that envelope the town during rain fall. The sights and sounds of this seasonal marvel will leave you in awe. In the absence of floods, the town is still breaming with natural wonders, from waterfalls, springs to breath-taking cliff-views.

Just four kilometers away, the Old Al Ghatt Village can be reached. As you walk pass abandoned mud houses and through warren alleys, you’ll realize that this historical side of town is suspended in time. On it lies a 400-year-old mosque, which is considered to be one of the oldest in the central region. A few minutes up the road and you’ll find the Al Ghatt museum, a palace of Nasser Al Sudairy donated by his offsprings. The then Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities took the renovation and stocking of the museum under its wing. It provides a

window into the history of the region and the way of life the local’s lived. The Abdulrahman Al Sudairy Foundation has been at the forefront of efforts to rehabilitate Al Ghatt hand-inhand with its community. As Dr. Salman Al Sudairy, former deputy secretary general of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities from 20012005, board member of the foundation and a true son of Al Ghatt, said: “You need to work with the people, you need to inspire people, and let them inspire you.

While its charm lies in the authentic view it provides of a traditional Najd settlement, there is no doubt that it is one that requires delicate attention to bring it back to its glory days.

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 21

We take pride in what Al Ghatt is and believe in what it can become. What it is today is because of the community that fosters it. There is shared love, a unique communal trust, and sense of ownership in this town.” One project that was led and managed by Mr Faisal Al Sudairy is the Almulhim House. The house belongs to his mother’s family and it was completely restored as a bed and breakfast. This project also prompted a much larger restoration program of a whole neighborhood in old Al Ghatt. The bed and breakfast is awaiting the completion of the wider project. Once it opens, Al Ghatt will be able to offer a unique experience, where tourists both local and international can find themselves transported in time while having the luxuries and convenience of a nice fivestar accommodation.

A Blueprint For True Local Tourism As Prince Sultan bin Salman, President of the Saudi Commission for National Heritage, wrote in his foreword to the tourism strategy of Al Ghatt, “all activity is local, in so far as it takes place in a given destination area with the active involvement and support of the host community.” This is something that the Abdulrahman Al-Sudairy Foundation knows all too well. At its current state, we already found Al Ghatt to be ripe for discovery. It is a town we felt should definitely be mirrored by other rural settlements. However, as Dr. Salman

22 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2017

rightfully pointed out, “the potential is there, developments are underway, and we do believe that Al Ghatt can become a cultural, historical, socio-economical destination but we have to get the fundamentals in order.” Dr. Salman co-authored the Tourism Strategy for Al Ghatt, which highlights the strategic and tactical steps that need to be undertaken for the town to succeed in its efforts. Rural villages like it need to be seen as national assets, and while the SCTH, the municipality, and the foundation are paving the way; at the end of the day, public-private partnerships need to come into play. Investments are needed to create the facilities, attractions,

and infrastructure to make a sustainable local tourism market. The floods have also made Al Ghatt ideal for agriculture, and indeed the community has learned to harness the power of its land. The community also makes Al Ghatt what is today. Here we find people who have a sense of ownership and responsibility to their city. Mutual respect is effervescent among the locals and their surroundings. Let the stories of Al Ghatt echo across the region. This is a town other communities should aspire to be. Full of promise, it’s only a matter of time before it becomes a destination - and we say, people should get on-board the progress train, less you get left out.

The farms here take pride in the quality of their produce, dates in particular. Some of which are main suppliers for the renowned Saudi franchise Bateel. This points towards the possibility for a local economy that can thrive on its own terms if given the right support.

Who is the Saudi Wanderlust? I began my travels in 2013, and since then I’ve visited about 27 countries. But I'm not looking for quantity as much as I'm looking for quality. I love throwing myself out of my comfort zone. I like to find out how other people live and realize that the world is much bigger than the town we live in. And when I come back home I feel a whole new person, I learn a lot! Not only about the place I went to but about myself and the world around me. Something in my mind shifts, and that changes how I view everything. After all those trips my friends and family started asking if they can join me. From there the idea of creating a travel group started. The name comes from my soul’s constant urge to travel. I’m trying to change the Saudi girl’s prospective about traveling alone and where to travel; meaning I don't want people to go to London or Paris and shop, sit in cafes all day and restaurants all night. I want show them that there are at least 150 countries that are worth the visit!

Locally, Al Qassim is my favorite destination for those who are looking for historical places to visit. Al Ulaa is a very promising future destination. It’s a hidden treasure and a must see for those who live is Saudi. Taif and Al Qarah Mountain in Al Ahsa are also highly underrated.

At the Grand Canyon.

Can you tell us about the kind of tours you arrange? In Saudi Wanderlust we are looking for experience rather than a tour or sightseeing. In each trip we dress up in the national costume we are in, we meet locals, break bread with them and ask them questions, celebrate their functions and festivals. Sometimes we go for a safari, a husky ride, dive, or just mediate and do yoga. It all depends.

What are the challenges of being a Saudi female wanderlust (if there are any)? How do you overcome them? Coming from an understanding and supporting family, I don’t have challenges myself per say. The only challenge that we face while organizing a trip for girls is the approval of their parents, due to local customs. I think we will soon overcome

What advice would you give to people who want to wanderlust themselves but don't know where to start? Start planning now! Explore new destinations instead of just copying other people’s routes. No Laptop? No Problem! Passengers flying from Saudi Arabia to the United States and the United Kingdom are affected by the recently imposed electronics ban. Laptops, cameras, gaming devices and tablets such as iPads will have to be in checked luggage. Here’s how some Middle Eastern Airlines are reacting to the ban:

Etihad Airways is

offering first and business class passengers free WiFi and iPads on all U.S.-bound flights from Abu Dhabi.

Qatar Airways loans complimentary laptops to business class passengers and also collects electronic items at the gate to be securely packed.

Emirates Airline allows passengers to use their electronics at the gate up until boarding time, at which point the airline will securely check those items.

retreat that’s worth the half day of travel to reach. The casual beach resorts lining its coast provide a balanced ambiance of authenticity and luxury as you begin and end each day watching the crystal blue ocean waves crash along the shoreline.

Why would anyone travel to Bulgaria? For one, the capital of Sofia has the amenities and atmosphere of more popular European cities at a fraction of the cost while also feeling less crowded and more chill. It’s also home to some of the most impressive and diverse architecture I’ve ever encountered, telling the country’s rich history through its assorted cityscape. Nature enthusiasts should take a two-hour bus ride to the nearby Rila mountains, home

to the famous Rila Monastery and the Seven Rila Lakes. One can easily access the natural beauty of these glacial lakes (found 2,500 meters above sea level) by taking a convenient lift ride followed by a short trek. However, I recommend a two-day hike across one of the range’s clearly marked paths where you’ll find lush forests and meadows, wild horses roaming the open valleys, and breathtaking panoramic views of mountains as far as the eye can see.

If you decided to spend your entire holiday lounging on the white sand beaches, no one would blame you; but there’s plenty else to do. Zanzibar is recognized for its spice industry, and touring the local spice farms will expose you to a myriad of tastes and smells that you will not soon forget. The turquoise waters around the Mnemba Atoll reef deliver exceptional visibility for snorkeling and diving. Last but not least, wandering the narrow alleys of Stone Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) will mesmerize you with its distinct blend of Arabic, Indian, and European influences.

Gather around for a traditional coffee ceremony at almost any corner shop where the beans are roasted over an open flame, ground with a mortar and pestle, and boiled in a customary jebena pot. During the day, visit any of the city’s captivating art and history museums including the National Museum of Ethiopia – home of the world famous Lucy skeleton. At night, explore Addis Ababa’s surprisingly vibrant night life by enjoying a cultural music and dance performance over a plate of injera, a national dish of spiced meat piled on top of sponge-like flatbread. Final Tips for Weekend Travel

Pack Light

Weekend trips don’t require a lot of baggage, so save time at check-in and avoid the tragedy of lost luggage by not checking a bag. Just be mindful of carry-on restrictions such as liquids.

Take the Red Eye

Overnight flights can be a pain, but you’ll get the most out of your trip by resting on the plane and waking up with a full day of discovery ahead of you. The excitement from being in a new place is almost always enough to compensate for a poor night’s sleep.

Find a Package Deal

Consider paying a third party to take care of your lodging, transportation, and itinerary. I used Escape Travels on all these trips and felt more relaxed knowing everything was handled (visit escape-travels.com for more info).

AN EXHIBITION LIKE NO OTHER

Get to know the Holy Mosques better. By Mohammed Mirza

Driving along Old Makkah Road, lined with small villages, we headed to the Exhibition of the Two Holy Mosques’ Architecture located in the suburbs of Makkah. I find myself standing among a group of people waiting patiently outside the exhibition for it to open. Alongside me stand many Umrah pilgrims who have come to the outskirts of the city to see the exhibition. From the outside, it looks like the entrance of Masjid Al Haram. 46 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2017

Seeing the number of visitors, you can assume that it competes with the National Museum in Riyadh for the most visitors amongst the Kingdom’s exhibitions and museums. The exhibition is divided into seven sections that merge seamlessly. We were first greeted by a miniature version of the Masjid Al Haram. It had tech-savvy features that were meant to be operated by a touch panel but those didn’t seem to work at the time. Nevertheless, onlookers crowded it from all sides. Nearby was an older casing of Maqam Ibrahim. In the same hall were crescents that once adorned the minarets of the Grand Mosque. Any article, ornament or artifact that has any sort of relation to the Two Holy Mosques is on display, ranging from items dating back several centuries to ones that are less than a few decades old.

STAFF PHOTO / MOHAMMED MIRZA

An imposing staircase made of teakwood that dates back to the earlier part of the 19th century stands in the center of the adjacent hall. The complex

designs make it look like a wooden masterpiece.-But, what perhaps is most imposing in the exhibition is a door of the Kaaba. A lot of visitors line up to take pictures. Another section is devoted to rare old pictures of the Grand Mosque; these photographs were a gift by the late Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz. The Kaaba had and still has three columns that support the structure from the inside, but these are not visible to the general public. One such column stands in an isolated corner. There are also chests that were once inside the Kaaba on display. These DESTINATIONKSA.COM 47

chests were installed under the patronage of various rulers whose rule extended to Makkah in the olden times. As I made my way past the swarm of visitors, I reached an area that has rare handwritten manuscripts of the Quran, most prominent of which was a replica of the original Othmani manuscript. Then follows the Masjid Al

Nabawi section that has a huge door of the mosque as its grand attraction. This door was built fairly recently; however, it manages to gather more tourists than the much older artifacts. In the Zamzam section, an old railing of the Zamzam well sits in the center. Brass buckets that were used to draw water and brass bowls in which the water was served sit safely locked behind glass panes. Next to them was a collection of old coins that were excavated during various renovation projects carried out near the well.

One thing that stood out to me is that the rulers who contributed to the development of the Holy Mosques have their names etched through the artifacts that were built under their patronage. From the inscriptions of the Ottoman rulers to vestiges that date

way back to the Abbasid era; they all have shaped the Holy Mosques into what we know them today. COORDINATES 21.433997, 39.754130 VISITING HOURS: 6-8 p.m. Entry is free of charge.

Before I knew it, I had already passed through all the sections; it took me less than half an hour. And while the artifacts impressed me, I wished that was more to be learned about the two Holy Mosques. There are so many things about their history that we don’t commonly know about.

to me. I saw beauty in them. As an emotional person myself, I was looking for a platform to showcase that side of me, and film was the one I felt the most passionate about. The emotions that can be translated through a film are indescribable (in my case), hence why I decided to explore the eye-opening and diverse world of filmmaking.

Where do you see yourself heading with filmmaking? A dream of mine is to hopefully direct and produce my own film that focuses on the beauty of unity and culture, hence a film that tackles social issues we encounter on a daily basis. Basically, I see myself excelling in the film industry, as I would like to approach ideas that have never been talked about, and I believe by doing so I would help many people going through rough times regain that spark and hope in their lives.

Describe your style. My style in film is very symbolic, I like to symbolize

certain aspects of my films in terms on arts and production, I also love to add music into my films because I feel like it adds to the film in terms of emotions.

How do you decide whether a film you’ve completed is a success or not? I believe that it is impossible to know whether a film I have created is successful, in terms of the audience watching it. But, in terms of how I personally critique my films, I never rate them, and I never publish a film that I am not proud of. There is one quote I live by: “No Pain, No Gain.” Many see this quote as a set of words, but what I see is the beauty of determination. For one to succeed, he/ she must fail. So the films I do not publish, are the films that fail to make the cut, and the films that are published are the films I am the most proud of. aidencorte aiden_corte

He cofounded C3Films, as well as Telfaz11, a production house with a growing network of YouTube channels that stand millions of subscribers strong, with videos that have been watched over half a billion times. He directed the film “Wasati” which was featured in the festival. The film retells the story of a true event about extremists attacking a theater in Riyadh, addressing it from a different perspective.

What are your thoughts and reflections on the Saudi Film Festival ?

When I came, it wasn’t to judge, but to observe with an open mind and heart. Frankly

What do you think of the quality of the films?

Some of them were very good. In particular, the filmmakers from Al Ahsa stood out in areas such as storytelling, directing techniques, cinematography and acting. Even the experimental films were great. The films revealed a lot of potential professional filmmakers bursting with passion and vision.

What’s your main source for content? What ideas do you want tackled? I always work from within. I think there are many great stories in Saudi Arabia that have never been told. Historically, oral storytelling had existed among Saudi tribes and I know a lot of

stories that would be epic narratives. Naturally, there can be limitations on productions and actors, as well as sensitive topics. But, the complications of these oral stories and histories are still relevant in our modern communities. So, we need to be sensitive to our audience and society. Saudi Arabia is a relatively new nation and we have to learn more from the past and present in order to tell our stories in the future.

Advice to filmmakers?

You should work nonstop and tirelessly. The first 10 years in this career is the experimental phase. Mistakes are unavoidable, but through them you learn and develop and grow. Most importantly, be willing to hear and adopt new ideas and perspectives during that experimental phase. Alexander Woodman is an award-winning writer from Los Angeles Press Club. IN GAMING CUSTODY THE LEGEND OF ZELDA Breath of the Wild A New Soul for Hyrule

THE MESSAGE

About: Follow blogger Nicky Tomalin as she covers a group of cryptologists decoding an alien message from outer space. Thanks to the short time commitment, this is an excellent place to start your foray into fiction podcasts. Length: One season (complete) Web: themessagepodcast.com

MASS EFFECT Andromeda The Promise of Golden Worlds Andromeda Diverges from the Milky Way and onto a new galaxy, but it does very little to recapture the essence of its predecessors. It sets up an interesting story but is held back by mediocre dialogue, poor pacing, and choices with no proper impact for almost half of the game. However, the game has an excellent and flexible combat, complemented with great exploration, and a moral choices system that's more diverse than its predecessors' Paragon and Renegade one.

Breath of the Wild marks a radical departure for the series. It embraces the formula of open world games beautifully, without compromising it's soul or essence, paying homage to the original Zelda on the NES. Exploration is encouraged, as the world is filled with secrets. It's also packed with smartly designed puzzles, simple yet satisfying combat, and mechanics that complements the exploration in engaging ways. However, the limited stamina and the weapons finite durability felt irritating in the beginning. Dungeons aren't memorable, but the shrines make up for it in unique ways. Breath of the Wild is bold, beautiful, and great.

It might not be the golden Mass Effect game, but it's still an engaging and fun chapter in the series.

DINING AROUND TOWN

Doughnut Worry, Be Happy! Here’s a round round-up for all you Homer Simpsons of Riyadh. By Aljouhara Al Moammar and Zahra Anwer

Whether glazed, sprinkled, or stuffed doughnuts — we have stuffed our faces happy. We know, it’s such a sacrifice. D’oh.

4. Vanilla Sprinkles

1. Dip’in

3. Tim Hortons

If you’re looking for an experience, this is the place for you. They have the most diverse selection and the quality to rival it. This local gem deserves our stamp of approval.

Café and Bakeshop

The glazed is similar to Krispy Kreme but seems very dense when you bite in to it. We highly recommend the Nutella doughnuts – it’s the best one at Tim Hortons.

1. Custard

Glazed

Tastes nice but very doughy and heavy.

Deep Chocolate

How can one go wrong with chocolate?! Loved it.

Nutella-Filled 1. Vanilla Marble

2. Chocolate Glazed

A pretty looking flower shaped doughnut, perfect for a Nutella fix. It’s sprinkled with chopped hazelnuts with a blob of pure Nutella in the center.

2. House of Donuts

House of Donuts reminds us of our childhood days when they used to be the leading doughnut café. I guess we prefer their mini doughnuts more. 2. Original

Original

Fluffy and good texture but not that tasty.

Chocolate Glazed Good looking but very doughy. 74 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2017

4. Dunkin’ Donuts

Vanilla Sprinkles

We have a feeling their quality dropped, no? We were disappointed by the strange dry texture. However, we liked the Vanilla Sprinkles more than any.

Choco Frosted

Meh! It wasn't as fluffy and melty as we remembered it to be.

Vanilla Marble

It was just OK. We didn’t like the frosting, which was quite unfortunate.

Boston Kreme

This one was good. Creamy filling and covered in a nice layer of chocolate glaze.

Pretty to look at, and probably a real hit with the kids. Best one to go for if you like vanilla glazed donuts. What a relief to know Dunkin' Donuts isn't all bad.

7. Krispy Kreme

They are literally the BEST in town. Absolutely smitten by their chocolate glazed and stuffed Boston Cream doughnuts.

Original Glazed

The mother of all Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Soft and oh-so-sweet. It's simple and addictive!

Chocolate Iced Glazed The star of the show!

5. Caribou

6. Dr. Cafe

All we can say is, Caribou has much better coffee than doughnuts

Glazed Donut

Just ok.

Chocolate Doughnuts Not satisfying.

The Glazed donut was better than what House of Donuts and Dunkin’ Donuts offers.

Cloud-like texture that melts in the mouth.

Chocolate Dream Cake

Krispy Kreme Nutella It's chock-full of sweet chocolate-hazelnutty vibes. Great for Nutella lovers everywhere!

Chocolate Iced Custard Filled

Sure to satisfy all the Boston Cream Pie lovers out there. This donut is not to be missed.

As dreamy as its name, if you dream of chocolate. This rich donut oozes with chocolate.

Glazed Sour Cream

With a pastry denser than the regular doughnut, this is a rich and moist doughnut. While most of us loved this one, the question in the air: Is it a cake or a doughnut?

Dip, Dig, and Dive

Dip away with your favorite finger foods. By Zahra Anwer, AlJouhara Moammar

1. DR Special Sauce

(Labnah, yogurt, olives, lemon, salt, lentil soup powder mix). The product of fridge leftovers. Every now and then, we take a break from adulting and basically just grab anything we can mix together and dip our chips into. A few dozen Netflix marathons later, we discovered this tasty love potion.

3. Green Chutney – Indo-Pak

Green chutney, a classic chutney made with aromatic fresh cilantro, mint, green chillies and a dash of garlic. It’s a refreshing condiment that goes with nearly everything from sambosas to kebabs to sandwiches.

4. Greek Feta Cheese Salad

2. Saudi Dakkous

Looking for a crisp, refreshing salad to pass around the table? You might try this one, with juicy tomatoes, olives and crumbly feta. It's one of the best and easiest to prepare.

6. Guacamole

If it’s wrong to eat a dip right out of the bowl with a spoon, then we don’t want to be right! Hands down, this is seriously our favorite guac up with cherry tomatoes and a little extra lime juice.

8. Moroccan Sauce

Moroccan Harissa Sauce is a spicy and hot red pepper paste which is traditionally made. It can really perk up your meals and snacks.

5. Fool

This is a staple dish for most people in Egypt and is a very simple, hearty dip of fava beans. It tastes great with flat bread. It's one of the most common dishes here in Saudi, especially during iftar and suhoor in the holy month of Ramadan.

7. 'Cacık- Turkish Yogurt and Cucumber Sauce

There is something oddly addicting about the combination of tangy-thick yogurt, crunchy grated cucumber, garlic, fresh mint and extra virgin olive oil.

9. Thai Peanuts Sauce Peanut sauce is really easy to make and has one of our favorite ingredients: peanut butter mixed with other ingredients. All you need is to mix the ingredients in a saucepan, heat it up, and voila.

12 MONTHS to a Healthier You Add or remove a habit every month.

TOPIC OF THE MONTH:

Detox, the right way!

As part of the 12 Months to a Healthier You campaign, this month is all about detoxing. We are continuously bombarded with the latest juice detox fads, which usually lack any form of scientific evidence, yet we are still swayed to try them out because of the associated simplicity, and allure of a promised ‘quick-fix’.

78 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2017

Until there is substantial scientific evidence that juice fasts contribute to better health, we should avoid anything that puts the body through immense strain. Unfortunately, new trends have even taken it a step further by linking detoxing with weight loss. Keep in mind that any “weight loss” during such fixes (typically for three days)

STAFF PHOTO/ ABDULRAHMAN BA'ALI

By Mai Kholief

DID YOU KNOW Detox towards a healthier you by making small changes that have an everlasting effect. My favorite ways to detox: • Drink more water. • Exercise more. • Eat more greens.

mostly just get rid of water weight, and the weight will just as easily return a few days after the detox is over. Cleanses are usually low in protein, but we all need a daily supply of protein to build healthy immune cells and muscle recovery. Consequently, you do not lose fat and you do not become healthier with a juice fast.

Rather than opting for a quick fix, make lifestyle changes that last. Go for natural and organic foods that will reduce the intake amount of processed preservatives. One of the easiest ways to clean out your system and remove toxins is by drinking lemon water. A glass of warm water with lemon in the morning is refreshing and a great Vitamin C boost for the immune system.

• Opt for organic foods when possible. • Get a good and intense massage. • Replace sugary drinks with green tea. • Incorporate superfoods such as quinoa into your meals. • Cut out refined sugars. • Eliminate foods with additives and preservatives. • Go meatless once a week.

How to Travel

IN SHAPE Don’t let excuses get in the way. It’s always possible to get in some workouts while abroad. In fact, training in a new environment may help boost your mental stamina, embed more creativity and variety in your workouts and blessedly offset the negative effect of eating outdoors.

Here are a few tips that have helped me stay in shape while traveling:

- Ensure that you pack some light equipment and training clothes. These include jump rope, TRX, resistance bands and swimming goggles. - Try HIIT to go fast and hard using just your body weight. -Physically move through tourist attractions whenever possible: walk, cycle, hike and run while you take in the beautiful scenery. 80 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2017

-Have your travel buddies join you for a fun group workout. - Challenge yourself to try new energetic activities like paddle boarding, climbing, open water swimming and night diving. - Don’t deprive yourself of trying new and exciting foods but try to control your portions and eat healthier meals whenever you can. - Never go more than two days in a row without working out. Or you’ll find it harder to get back into the swing of things when you return home from your holiday.

PHOTO/HAJER AL-ALWAN

- Make sure to include workouts in your travel itinerary, preferably early in the morning. It's not impossible to plug in 30-60 minutes of training if it's a priority.

COURTESY PHOTO

- Pick a hotel that has decent workout facilities like a gym, running track, and/or swimming pool.

TRAVEL WORKOUT

Here is a workout you can do right in your hotel room. - Five-minute warm up: pulse-raising movements such as jumping jacks, high kicks, or even running through the hallway a few times. It's essential to include some stretching movements. -Five Tabata cycles + 90 second recovery between each cycle: each cycle consists of 8X (20 second of work, and 10 second off/recovery). Challenge yourself to push as hard as possible during the 20 seconds of work. - Modified burpees: try to keep the same amount of reps for every 20 seconds. -Superman rocks: make sure you really squeeze your gluteus and legs together while you stretch out.

- Squat jumps: Drop down into a squat and a high jump. Try to maintain the rep scheme throughout the Tabata cycle. - Plank hold shoulder taps: keep your core and torso centered, with straight alignment from head to toe. - Russian twists using a water bottle: go through the full range of motion with the twists, and drop your chest to tap deeper into core muscles. - Five-minute cool down with leg, arm and back stretches.

SOME OF MY RECOMMENDED TRAVEL DESTINATIONS FOR A FANTASTICALLY FIT TRIP: • Climb Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) • Climb Mount Kenya (Kenya) • Surf in Sri Lanka • Join a diving expedition in Komodo and hike with Komodo dragons (Indonesia) • Run the Paris Marathon (France) Nelly Attar Fitness ambassador, trainer, healthy living advocate. The Rhumba Revolution Dancing your way to a fitter life.

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD

Rhumba is a physical exercise discipline born out of South America and is currently enjoyed all over the world. Its popularity stems from its flexible nature, where all the practitioner has to do is enjoy the music and have fun with dancing.

82 DESTINATION RIYADH MAY 2017

BENEFITS OF RHUMBA • It has a pain-relieving effect on the nervous system, pumping you full of endorphins that leave you feeling happy and satisfied. • It alleviates stress and helps you feel more relaxed. • It increases your energy, making you feel invigorated and ready to take on the world. Due to the variety of movements in this exercise, it increases your body’s flexibility, tones your muscles and sheds off your fat. The main difference between Rhumba and many other physical exercise routines is that you don’t need weights or accessories to do it; all you need is a little music, a little creativity and a lot of fun as you bust out those dance moves. For the best experience, use a room with wood flooring, a decent sound system, and a playlist of your favorite music for an hour. If you’re a beginner, we advise that you start with basic moves until you achieve better flexibility and increase your cardiovascular and pulmonary strength.
