FROM THE EDITOR

Mubarak Alaykom Al Shahar Riyadhis! Welcome to our highly anticipated June/Ramadan issue. This issue of our precious magazine is a favorite to put together. Stories come easy for this month as most of us write slightly reminiscently in Ramadan. As we all know, Ramadan is the perfect time for dates. It is a staple everyday, but did you know this Ramadan is the first one in a while without fresh dates? Yup, it turns out they’ll be in season around the end of the month. If you’re as date curious as we are, check out our interview with Dr. Mohammed Al Nuwairan, the godfather of Saudi dates. At the end of June, we’ll welcome in our first holiday of the year, Eid. As a collective effort Riyadhis, can we all promise to make this one more… festive? We know we weren’t the only ones who remember Eid as the biggest celebration of the year when we were younger. Let’s not let our skepticism and the monotony of adulthood take this away anymore. Find out how you can take back your Eid in our special features section. This month is a time of spirituality, reflection and family. So keep your family close and self closer.

Find out how Cambridge programmes help students from Saudi Arabia get into universities around the world Cambridge International AS & A Levels are recognised as a passport to success in education, university and employment. They are valued by universities around the world as academically rigorous qualifications that equip students with the skills they need to succeed both at university and beyond. Universities tell us that they value the independent research and critical thinking skills that our qualifications develop, as well as the deep subject knowledge. When we asked some of the world’s top universities, including Yale and Harvard, to tell us what they think about Cambridge qualifications, 98% said they give students excellent preparation for university.

“We think that Cambridge international qualifications are a really good preparation for university study. They allow students to specialise in particular subjects and to develop lots of other skills which are really useful for university study – like communication skills, research skills and problem-solving skills.”

“Cambridge International A Level Chemistry provided me with hands-on experience to build a solid understanding of all other sciences, including physics and biology. Students wanting to join a medical or pharmacy school will benefit from the Cambridge International A Level Chemistry syllabus.”

MY LITTLE SCHOOL Where “because I said so” isn’t an option.

Aida Adnan, Founder and Director of MLS

From the moment kids walk into school, you can tell that things are different around here. You would expect to see young children crying or clinging to their parents, not wanting to be separated. But not at My Little School (MLS). Teachers are right there at the front door enthusiastically greeting and welcoming children to another day of fun learning. A walk through the school and a peek into the classrooms reveals what makes MLS so refreshingly different. What truly sets MLS apart from all other educational institutions is its belief in Conscious Discipline, a school wide solution for socialemotional learning, executive function development, discipline and self regulation. Conscious Discipline utilizes everyday events rather than an external curriculum, 24 DESTINATION RIYADH JUNE 2017 ADVERTORIAL

and addresses the adult’s emotional intelligence as well as the child’s. Teachers, staff and children learn to respond to daily conflict in a way that transforms it into an opportunity to teach critical life skills. Children learn how to compose themselves through deep breathing techniques. They learn about being empathetic, having positive intent, how to be assertive and not aggressive, how to encourage others, and make decisions and accept the consequences for doing so.

Conscious Discipline is evidencebased, and was named as a national model for character education by the Florida State Legislature.

The custom-built facility and the meticulously planned learning environment clearly reflect the high quality educational program that is offered at this early years and elementary school. Academic rigor and student engagement are high as students are involved in a very active learning approach to education. The caliber of the staff and the curricular programs is truly exceptional. MLS is unique in the emphasis placed on establishing healthful living habits amongst its young pupils. They care enough about their students to have a Health and Wellness Advisor. The school offers a hot lunch program following a meal plan developed by their nutrition expert. Meals are cooked on site with wholly fresh and organic produce with the entire color palette

of the food pyramid on offer. Parents may wonder how and why their child is so willing to eat the greens since “Because I said so!” isn’t an option at this school. You know the nutrition and health lessons at MLS have been effective when students take their knowledge home and lecture their parents about eating healthy. Now, that’s a sign of a truly educated mind and body! MLS is dedicated to developing the “whole-child.” Through continuous training of our teachers, implementation of programs that have been researched based and result in high standardized test scores, our students who have graduated have continued to be successful in every aspect of their lives. HILTON EMPLOY TALENTED YOUTH

We are Hilton. We are hospitality.

Like clockwork, every morning, the GM of DoubleTree by Hilton Riyadh starts his day by taking a round through the hotel. The GM’s walk is a chance for him to greet all the hotel’s employees before the day starts. After being named best company to work for in KSA, Hilton has chosen Saudi Arabia as a key country to focus their efforts. With many hotels being built in addition to those in operation, Hilton see it as vital that they do all they can to attract young Saudi talent. So, for their youth development week, DoubleTree Hilton invited us to a behind the scenes exclusive. As a temporary employee, I was 26 DESTINATION RIYADH JUNE 2017 ADVERTORIAL

given an all access pass to find out what it’s like to work in a busy hotel. As a temporary employee, I was given an all access pass to find out what it’s like to work in a busy hotel. From the moment you walk through the hotel doors, you’ll be greeted by smiling faces and a good morning from every other passing employee. As cliché as it sounds, it turns out a hotel like DoubleTree Hilton can also feel like home.

DR staff working behind the scenes with the Hilton chef.

If home is where the heart is, then it’s no surprise the hotel has managed to accomplish that feat. Throughout the back corridors of the hotel, the area guests never get a chance to see, the walls are covered with motivational posters and employee accolades. “You are the heart of Hilton” DR staff going through the house keeping process.

is the phrase that greets employees along with heart shapes on almost every wall. For the skeptics who believe that it takes more than a few posters to make a good work environment, whatever it is that the Hilton is doing, it is working. Whether I was working behind the cooking station, the front desk or even housekeeping, every person I came in contact with had a smile and a hello for me. It was not a coerced obligatory greeting. Everyone, no matter where they stand, receives the same genuine greeting. Put my statements to the test, and the next time you’re in DoubleTree approach the front desk and you’ll see what I mean. If you seem

like an approachable enough person, the guys and girls behind the counter might even throw in a couple of jokes with the obligatory and famous check-in cookie. Throughout my time with DoubleTree I learned that hospitality is not just the name of the industry, it’s the rule of thumb, especially here. It’s not just reserved for the guests either; it’s for your coworkers as well. After all, almost every person I ran into had confessed that the camaraderie in the hotel is akin to that of a family. WHO’S WHO

Every single date in the country is this man’s business. By Noura Al Joaib

28 DESTINATION RIYADH JUNE 2017

I was pleasantly surprised when I first heard about NCPD. Tell us about it. The main responsibilities of the center are marketing dates and date and palm related products, as well as increasing the quality of productions. We make deals and negotiate on behalf of our

efficiency, product quality, effective marketing programs inside and outside the country, encouraging creativity and innovation, strengthening the collaboration between all parties and leveraging the dates sector as a key source of national income.

How did you end up running NCPD? It was a long journey, 12 years in the making. After earning both my MSc and PhD in Management Science (manufacturing, logistics, supply chain management), I studied many worldwide cases and worked closely with many governments and private agencies in the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. I came back to King Faisal University to work as Assistant Professor at the School of Business, and that’s where NCPD approached me to lead the center.

What do you believe is the role of dates and palm trees in our future? producers inside and outside the country, searching for the best technology and processes worldwide to increase the efficiency of production and the supply chain process.

Why was it created? To develop the dates sector by concentrating on production

I see dates and palm trees as a great source of income for producers and a rewarding opportunity for investors. They will also contribute to the change in our food choices when opting for a healthier lifestyle. I would definitely call it a promising sector.

Who do you see as the champions of the palms

and dates sector? I would say Qasim Province is at the top, followed by Al Ahsa, then Madinah and finally Kharj.

What’s the most important thing you’d learned during your years abroad that you brought back with you? For me personally, I learned to be a lot more patient. I also realized how crucial customer service and commitment was for business.

If your closest friends and family were to describe you in three words, what would those words be? Hardworking, persistent and ambitious.

What’s your favorite aspect about Ramadan? I always look forward to praying taraweeh and socializing with friends and family. I also enjoy the challenge of pushing myself to work harder during the month, knowing how hard it is to keep productivity up during it.

Finally, what’s your favorite type of date? (Laughs) That’s actually a very hard question to answer, but I can definitely say that my favorite dates around the world are Saudi dates. Location: Al Mashariq Tower, Riyadh Web: ncpd.org.sa

KHIYRAT The Food Busters With the alwayspresent problem of food waste, Ramadan this year will hopefully shape up to be different. By Areeb Al Shathri

Food waste is arguably the single most pressing issue in Ramadan, and frankly all-yearround. Arab culture, and Saudi hospitality more specifically, places a high value on honoring your guests. Most of us assume that a large food spread is the way to do it. We view it as a sign of generosity. But generosity has its limits when it borders on

32 DESTINATION RIYADH JUNE 2017

israf (over indulgence). While some of us are content with the status quo, Khiyrat isn’t, and thank god for that. Khiyrat is a small non-profit organization that aims to curb food waste. It is most known for gathering leftovers from individuals, restaurants, hotels and private functions and distributing them to people who need it.

THEIR APPROACH CAN BE DIVIDED INTO THREE STAGES:

REUSE

Not everything received by Khiyrat is edible. However, scraps and remains do not go unused. What others consider as trash, Khiyrat considers fuel. They take the scraps, compost it and turn it into fertilizer. Fertilizers made from natural materials are not commonly available in the Kingdom; Khiyrat is hoping to change. The proceeds from the sale of this fertilizer will help fuel Khiyrat’s services in the future.

WAYS TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT:

If there’s an abundance of food at the end of your event, who you gonna call? Khiyrat!

COURTESY PHOTO

RECYCLE

After they receive a request for excess food, Khiyrat sends a car to pick it up. Leftovers are then sorted and packaged into small containers. The containers are then delivered to the families that need it or to charity fridges in neighborhoods that Khiyrat’s extensive research shows are in need of it.

CONSERVE! Call them next time you have an event with excess food.

EDUCATE

As part of their efforts, Khiyrat visits schools around the city to educate them about food waste. They teach them ways to conserve efficiently. By doing this, they hope to educate the next generation of consumers to be mindful of their choices.

Distribute smaller amounts of leftovers yourself to workers or people in need. Remember that it’s an effort on all fronts, and requires the whole family. Leftovers taste just as good the second day. Web: khiyrat.org.sa Mob: +966-537777266 Tel: +966-11-4422220 Khiyrat

Futoor Fundamentals By Areeb Al Shathri

Saudis are all about family time, and there is no period of time when that is more pronounced than in Ramadan. Since the entire family is present during futoor and because it’s a time-honored tradition, why not take advantage of it?! Add some flavor to your month of family iftars with these activities. 34 DESTINATION RIYADH JUNE 2017

Futoor-out

There are very few things that ruin futoor, like, monotony. Don’t let the routine sink in too much, and take your family out. There’s nothing like dressing up and going to a candlelit dinner with the fam. If you’re looking for a quiet family futoor, we recommend heading to Al Mayass on Prince Sultan Road. It’s prefect for larger families who want to be comfortable. For more recommendations as always, head to our dining section p.58.

Mass Iftar

Every year, the Dimitris invite all of their kids’ friends to a buffet style futoor. It doesn’t matter that there is no place for the family to sit because the apartment has been taken over by starving teens, or the fact that they’re Christians. This is their chance to do good by feeding a fasting person, and a chance for them to get to know their kids’ friends. Your kids’ friends will remember this gesture like I remember the Dimitris 10 years later.

STAFF PHOTO/TUBA SARICIMEN

Here are some ways to spruce up a family futoor.

Replace the Soaps

The inclination to lounge back on your sofas and tune in to the latest pseudo drama is very strong in Ramadan, but for the sake of everything holy, don’t.

Potluck Futoor

If your family is anything like mine, there’s always one person who’s craving something that’s not actually present on the table. To satisfy them, and everyone else for that matter, hold a potluck futoor where everyone in the family gets to bring one dish they are truly craving. And hey, it doesn’t matter if they cooked it themselves or bought it, the only rule is you get ONE dish. This trick guarantees a complaint-free futoor.

Family Futoor

We know futoors by default are family affairs, but this one is a bit different. One universal thing about families is there’s always someone who is missing the presence of a loved one. Ramadan (and Eid) can be the time when absence is felt deeply. If you know someone like this, visit them with your family. You might not be able to replace the missing person, but a few extra faces might help remind them of who’s still around.

Remember that all the Ramadan soaps rerun the next afternoon and throughout the months following Ramadan. You’re not going to miss out on anything. Find a game that is most inclusive for your family to play after futoor. A personal favorite is Fibbage because it’s an interactive group game that uses a computer or a smart TV and your phones. If there’s a language obstacle, head to Jarir for their wide collections of Arabic and English games.

RAMADAN ACROSS BORDERS Unity through drums, lanterns and bathing. By Zonaira Chaudhary

Muslims around the world are celebrating the most awaited month of the Islamic Calendar. Thanks to the multitude of cultures that observe Ramadan, the spirit of enthusiasm, generosity and spirituality comes out in the most beautiful and unique ways. Ramadan rituals around the globe (from the exotic islands of Thailand to the ancient civilization of Egypt) still embody a sense of unity across any cultural differences between the Muslim populace.

A popular tourist destination, Muslims form the second largest religious group of this Southeast Asian country. Thai Muslims raise money all year round in each city or village to construct a new mosque during Ramadan. Another interesting custom is that Thai Muslim families offer sacrifices on the first day to mark the beginning of this auspicious month.

TURKEY

Turkey is an Islamic country filled with diverse ethnic traditions. An old Ramadan custom is to wake up Muslims for suhoor by beating drums before the dawn prayers. The drummers are dressed in Ottoman costumes as the tradition traces back to that empire. 36 DESTINATION RIYADH JUNE 2017

THAILAND

INDONESIA

Indonesia, the world’s largest island country, is also home to the world’s largest Muslim population. To greet the holy month, Muslims perform bathing rituals known as Balimau or Padusan in the River Kawung, the Kalianda Sea, as well as various springs, believing that it will purify them before they start fasting. The word Balimau is from the Minangkabau language, literally meaning “bathe with shampoo”. To continue the ancestral ritual, straw or rice-straw ash is used for shampooing, while other areas use limes to bathe with. The ceremony starts in the afternoon and ends at sundown (maghrib time).

EGYPT

The famous traditional lanterns that are lit all over the land of the Nile during Ramadan is a vibrant sight. The tradition dates back to the year 969 when the Egyptians greeted Fatimid Caliph Al Mu’izz liDin Allah in Cairo by lighting lanterns. A few decades later, the Caliph Al Hakim bi-Amr Allah wanted the streets of Cairo to be well illuminated with these lanterns, a custom which has continued for over a thousand years. Even now, young children can be seen carrying colorful lanterns and singing songs in the street. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 37

The Ramadan Newbie Guide FOR EXPATS Experience the uniqueness of celebrating the holy month in Saudi. By Safa Hassan

Expats and newcomers in Riyadh, you’ll experience a whole different way of living during the pious month of Ramadan. Here’s your much awaited Ramadan guide – the do’s, the don’ts and everything in between. 1. Traffic is the worst 3060 minutes before sunset (Maghrib prayer) during Ramadan. That is the rush hour as everyone is trying to get home or to a restaurant in order to break their fast on time. Plan your city travels appropriately!

The only downside to this rule is the delay in all government related tasks due to shorter hours. In case you’re planning to travel, make sure all your paperwork is done well in advance. 3. Speaking of travelling - book your June flights in advance because people travel a lot around Eid time! 38 DESTINATION RIYADH JUNE 2017

SOURCE PHOTO/HUMANSOFRIYADH.COM

2. Offices reduce working hours to provide ease to employees. That means you get to spend more time with family & family.

Be Thoughtful & Sympathetic • You’re living in a country where almost everyone is fasting, so eating publicly isn’t exactly considered great. If you have to eat just avoid crowded places! • Since it is a holy month, turning down the volume of the songs down isn’t just a wise move; it’s the respectful thing to do. • As a considerate human, greet your Muslim colleagues or friends with ‘Ramadan Kareem,’ they’ll be thankful!

4. Enjoy the local Ramadan specialty at restaurants or iftar tents set up by major hotels. Your taste buds will thank you! 5. Shopping malls restaurants and supermarkets are open till 2-3 a.m. Once you get the taste of midnight shopping mayhem, you’ll never want to let it go! Exploit the Ramadan and Eid sales! 6. If you’re a nocturnal or a midnight-snack kind of person, Ramadan is the time where you can feast all night till the first light! Most of the restaurants are open up to 3 a.m or Fajr time. 7. Accept invitations and experience an iftar. This is an opportunity for you to learn more about the traditions of the country you live in. Or you can even throw an iftar party for your Muslim friends. TAKE BACK YOUR EID Come on Riyadhis! We can do better than an azeema with a bouncy castle, right? By Areeb Al Shathri

40 DESTINATION RIYADH JUNE 2017

Picture 30-something kids gathered on the largest carpet any of them has ever seen. All silent despite the pent up excitement that’s threatening to spill over as their eyes scan the mountain of presents. As my cousin finishes reciting the rules with the seriousness of a boxing referee, I wrap my hands around the rope as tight as my 10-year-old hands can and watch my other cousin do the same. This is the closest we’ll ever get to war. This is Eid.

Somewhere between then and now, that excitement somehow faded for most people. We have to remind ourselves of how special this holiday was and can be. So if you’ve made the decision to stay home during the holidays, let us attempt to take back what is arguably the most anticipated holiday in our calendar. We can even make it for the adults again too! If you’re onboard, here are some missed Eid opportunities we could be capitalizing on.

Decorations

As with every event worth seeing, we have to put some effort into its advertising. Why not spend Ramadan afternoons creating holiday decorations with your family. Make one DIY paper lantern with your kids everyday and light them all on Eid. Instructions for these easy to make decorations are available online. Don’t worry if an everyday commitment doesn’t fit your schedule. Whenever you find time, hang up cutout paper decorations your family drew around the house. Or just print them off the Internet (no judgments here). These will keep everyone entertained and build up the suspense to Eid. Eid is one of the few holidays we all celebrate, so why is it that we skip out on celebrating it to the full extent? Eid used to be a lot more fun… Let’s take it back.

Food

Once Eid rolls around, make sure to take full advantage of the day. What’s better than a Eid breakfast? Brunch, of course! It’s all the yumminess of breakfast with the fulfillingness of lunch… the prefect meal. Eid breakfast is a staple of the holiday. It’s meant to be the first meal you have in daylight after Ramdan. If you’ve kept up the tradition of a family breakfast on Eid, good on you! If not, don’t worry about it. All you have to do is make it a brunch (for the sleepers in your family) and make sure everyone’s up and ready by then. Now that you’ve invested all this effort in decorating and have treats to go around, invite friends and family over. Most people have a traditional family gathering on Eid, but make sure you have your own traditions as well.

Family Photos

This is one of those missed opportunities that truly breaks my heart. How often does your entire family gather in the same place? Take advantage of the moment and snap a picture for the times. You never know when you might need a little momento of that moment.

Entertainment

While you’ve got everyone over, play some games. If your family is the active type, come up with some team games to play outdoors. If not, there’s no going wrong with a good game of charades. Whether you decide to go with a water fight or monopoly, just make sure to get everyone involved. And remember: It never hurts to have goodies for the winners, especially if it ends up being you.

Last, but certainly not least, Eid would not be the same without the nostrings-attached wad of cash we like to call Eidiya. Since this is the one tradition everyone looks forward to, why not make them work for it? Hide the Eidiyas in envelopes around the house and set up a treasure hunt or a game of hot and cold. In the spirit of giving and family, if you have house workers please remember to involve them in your celebrations.

ARTIST’S CORNER MEET THIS MONTH’S EMERGING ARTIST! Meet the visual artist and graphic designer. By Reema Al Humaid

an

ssain NAME: Sarah Al Hu AGE: 22 OCCUPATION: graphic designer

Tell us about yourself.

What is the medium you work with and what got you into it? I tend to explore all types of mediums. My curiosity to experiment is the reason why I can’t focus on pursuing only 42 DESTINATION RIYADH JUNE 2017

a certain medium. “I want to try this,” is what I usually say when something new crosses my way. Whether it’s traditional or digital, I use it as long as it grabs my attention.

What kind of artworks inspire you? When you hear a song and say that it’s “catchy,” I feel like it can be applied to visuals as well. Those “catchy” artworks are the ones that inspire me the most, along with the ones that define the artist or have a certain style that when you see it, you’d recognize that it belongs to a specific artist, like a signature style.

Why do you do art? I like visuals. I like to create something that is pleasing to look at.

What do you think of the art scene in Riyadh? It is definitely growing. More and more brilliant ideas and creations are being recognized.

Any suggestions to make it better? Artists should explore their creativity more and think outside the box and try to go beyond what’s already out there. Aim for innovation instead of imitation.

How would you define creativity? Creativity is not limited to art only. It’s about inventing solutions and constructing alternatives.

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE ARTISTS? Waad Almujalli, Ali Al Shehabi, Nouriflayhan, Adria Mercuri, and James Jean.

What does your work add to the local art scene? Experimenting has led me to discover new and different ways to create. Hopefully, one day I can inspire and witness more originality and more creativity. smakesart

DINING AROUND TOWN

TWO IS BETTER THAN ONE Our guide to classic food combinations. By Areeb Al Shathri

Twix + Arabic Coffee If there was perfect harmonious combination of the West and the Middle East, it’s this one right here. Politics aside, this staple is the closest second to the all time champion combination: dates and Arabic coffee. The genius idea of using a Twix bar as a chocolatey straw is the key to this combo. The hot and bitter arabic coffee runs through the bar and soaks up some of its sweetness while also simultaneously melting the center of the Twix bar.

Vimto + Sparkling Apple Juice

Another Ramadan classic with a little kick. We didn't think Vimto could get better! The sparkling apple juice gives it a tanginess that makes it perfect, especially if you add in chunks of fresh fruits. Fans of Saudi champagne will love it. Shall we call this one Saudi wine?

Dates + Cream (gishta)

This is a breakfast classic in the Middle East. The cold creaminess of the gishta mix in with the taste of dates to produce a sweet yoghurt like treat in every bite. If you love dates, this combination is not stranger to you. 64 DESTINATION RIYADH JUNE 2017

Cheese + Honey

There are different versions of this combination across the world. Many countries, Middle Eastern or otherwise, have their own takes on this. It further proves that cheese is an easy and obvious choice for a sweet or a savory palate. Whether you like to wrap whatever cheese you choose (hehe) in bread or prefer it to be just straight up cheese and honey, we’ll eat it. Kunafa the cheese or deep-fry it, with some honey on the side everything is acceptable.

Sambosa + Soup

Inexplicably a Ramadan classic, this is a favorite across the board. Some prefer to dip cheese sambosas in soup, but chicken/meat sambosas also work. It’s our version of soup and crackers. For some reason, this combination tastes best with soups that aren’t creamy. The redder the soup, the better the goup, right? Okay, no one says that, but it’s still valid.

STAFF PHOTO/ AREEB AL SHATHRI

Childhood Classic: Oreos + Milk

No matter where you’re from, you’ve twisted it, licked it and dunked it before. Here's a twist on a classic. If you boil a tiny bit of milk in a saucer, then add crushed up Oreos to get a smooth texture, you'll get an Oreo mousse! Add crushed up Oreos on the top of your serving cup and you’re set.

DR TIPS Chocolate Oreos make really good mousse.

Kelaija

The national cookie of Al Qasim, Kelaija comes in several variations. The most popular and our favorite are the ones filled with dates.

Aseeda

This decadent Arab dish is quite popular. Usually a winter treat, this high-energy sweet goodness

requires few ingredients. The most important ingredient, of course, is the dibs (date molasses).

DATING ADVICE

These kinds of dates always make things better. By Noura Al Joaib

Dates

No table is complete without the original delight. Whether you dip them in white chocolate or stuff them with walnuts and pistachios, we can all agree that dates are the best.

Areeka

This originally Yemeni concoction is a combination of traditional bread, ghee, honey and dates. Served hot and sizzling.

Ma’amoul

An oldie but a goodie, Ma'amoul are shortbread pastries stuffed with, you guessed it, dates! Although other variations can include pistachios or walnuts.

Dibs

Date molasses or syrup is made from cooked-down dates. Its popularity peaks during Ramadan as it’s the perfect sauce to drizzle over the month’s favorite dumpling: gaimat!

Khobaz Ahmar

This popular bread hails from Al Ahsa and is both nutritious and yummy. This flat pita-like bread is made from wholewheat flour, dates and black seeds.

TO BINGE OR NOT TO BINGE Healthy eating habits for Ramadan. By Areeb Al Shathri

It’s hard to maintain healthy eating habits in Ramadan. From confusing sleep, social and eating schedules to general food deprivation, eating right is the last thing on all our minds. Have no fear though, it’s actually easier than it seems. Here are a few tips to help you maintain your health.

Traditions form for a reason.

As it turns out, the habits that have seemed to form during Ramadan are for the better. The tradition of dates, laban and soup at futoor is in fact the healthiest option.

Liquids!

Because you are not hydrating throughout the day it’s best to fuel up on liquids in all forms during the hours of the day you can eat/drink. It rehydrates you and keeps you going for the next cycle.

Divide and conquer.

The habit of dividing the futoor to dates and soup then a meal is healthier. By taking it easy on the first intake, you prep your stomach for eating after it’s been dormant all day. It’s essentially a wake up call for your stomach to expect more visitors. 68 DESTINATION RIYADH JUNE 2017

No overeating!

Aside from the obvious downsides of not eating suhoor, it can also cause you to overeat at futoor. Overeating will result in you being passed out on your bed/couch and later apologizing for breaking plans.

Do not skip suhoor.

Not being hungry or not wanting to wake up is not an excuse to bail on the only thing that’s going to give your fuel the second day. You know that co-worker who’s always dead in Ramadan? Want to take a guess why? Yup, no suhoor.

No late night takeout.

Avoid eating high fat foods during suhoor. Contrary to what we may think, it won’t help the next day.

No caffeine.

Caffeine dehydrates the body, and that’s a no no in Ramadan. If you’re prone to getting thirsty, avoid caffeine in all its forms (energy drinks, tea or coffee). Try decaf if you’re craving coffee during Ramadan.

Protein is your friend.

Carbs can help make you feel full, but protein is what’s going to keep you in shape. Always remember to fill up on your meats and beans if you want to stay in shape while also surviving the day. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 69

SPIRITUALITY

RAMADAN

CHECKPOINTS Because food is just one part of Ramadan. By Zahra Anwer

70 DESTINATION RIYADH JUNE 2017

If we do not know why we are doing certain things, we can easily miss the point behind the action itself. “There may be people who fast and get nothing from their fast except hunger, and there may be those who pray qiyaam and get nothing from their qiyaam but a sleepless night.” Ibn Maajah)

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA ALDAZOOD

1. FAST WITH SINCERITY

3. SABR IT! Fasting is not just a day without food and drink. Use Ramadan as a training ground against greed, impatience and harsh words. If controlling our words were easy, we'd never be promised Paradise for doing it. Think about it! “Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it and ignorant conduct, Allah has no need of his giving up his food and drink.” (Bukhari)

4. SHARE YOUR BLESSINGS Buy less food this Ramadan and give the extra food and money to the poor and needy.

5. BE GRATEFUL

2. STAND UP FOR YOUR SUCCESS There are five opportunities for redemption every day, if you’re blessed to be alive. Muster up your lazy self and start praying. We have all heard hadiths about the importance of prayer, haven’t we? It’s never too late to start!

Witnessing Ramadan is a blessing that deserves major gratitude. Remember it's a month-long gift from the Almighty. Don't waste it. “By Allah, if it were said to the inhabitants of the graves, 'Wish', they would indeed wish for a day from Ramadan.” - Ibn al-Jawzi

6. MEND FENCES Reach out, repair bridges and share a meal together. Stop

waiting for an apology and be the first to make things right.

7. GIVE Find it in your heart to give wholeheartedly. Remember no one has ever become poor by giving. Give a smile, a helping hand, a good word to lift someone's spirits, food for the needy, money or anything else within your means.

8. DON'T MOCK OTHERS For many, Ramadan is the beginning of a major turning point. Don't mock them for starting their journey towards Allah, it’s never too late to start.

9. IGNORE THE DETOURS Don't let your sins bog you down. Allah doesn't care about the quantity of your sins, He cares about the quality of your repentance. One supplication to really focus on this Ramadan: “O Allah, help me remember You, to be grateful to You, and to worship You in an excellent manner.” (Abu Dawud)

1• SLEEP WELL.

Although for many, workinghours change, and almost everything shifts from day to night, you should still prioritize sleep over late night socializing!

2• ADAPT YOUR TRAINING PROGRAM.

1. Five minutes of going up and down the stairs, or running back and forth down the hallway to warm up.

Shift the timings, change up the intensity to low and moderate, and try different styles of training.

2. Bodyweight squats,

3• WORKOUT SMARTLY.

10 units of burpees, push-ups, Y-ups and crab reaches with a minute between each set.

Engage in low intensity workouts like yoga or brisk walking before iftar. Post iftar, you can kick it up notch, bearing in mind that you feel energetic and well. Avoid high intensity exercises during fasting hours as it can cause joint or muscle injuries and also lead to complications such as low blood pressure and dizziness. Staying in shape all boils down to how you feel. The priority is the spiritual journey and then comes our fitness programs and everything else.

If time constraints don’t allow you to go out for a walk or to the gym, don’t worry! A decent workout is possible at home:

back extensions and sit ups, with one minute off between each set.

3. Five minute workout with

4. Five minutes of broad

jumps. Take a minute off after each one minute set.

5. 3x8 sets of extended

inchworms, single leg free deadlift and side lunges.

6. Five minutes of cool

down with brisk walking and stretching.

12 MONTHS to a Healthier You Add or remove a habit every month. By Mai Kholeif

JUNE HABIT: Guilt free indulgence, this Ramadan. This Ramadan, your postiftar eating habits can either help you make massive strides towards your health goal, or it can lead to laziness, and even sickness. Take advantage of this holy month, and be good to your body and health. If you are like me, you will crave any form of dessert after iftar. While this is normal, satisfying your sweet tooth is a dangerous game, but it is not off limits. There are several ways to enjoy a deliscious dessert without jeopardizing your overall longterm health goals.

Remember this: What one person considers “healthy”, might not be suitable for another. Someone who actively avoids gluten may not be too concerned about sugar content, whereas another individual who avoids carbs might still indulge in dairy products. The goal is to pre-assess the dessert against your own health objectives. Middle Eastern desserts are traditional in Ramadan, but, along with other sweets, they are saturated with sugar and fat. These sweets are considered empty calories because they offer very little (if any) nutritional value.

If you make smart choices you won’t have to give up sweets entirely this Ramadan.

74 DESTINATION RIYADH JUNE 2017

STAFF PHOTO/ABDULRAHMAN BA'ALI

Portion Control and Total Daily Intake are your new best friends. Have one small piece of your favorite dessert to satisfy the cravings, but don’t make a meal out of it. Make note of the entire sugar intake of the day, not just per-meal intake.

KEEP THIS IN MIND

Fruit Parfait Recipe for a Healthy dessert this Ramadan:

A small piece of dark chocolate is a great option. You can also opt for other treats with nutritional value, such as fresh fruits or Greek yogurt.

INGREDIENTS: 1 cup Greek Yogurt 1 cup or your favorite fruits 1 cup of granola or oats

DIRECTIONS: • Cut your fruits into thin slices. • In serving glasses, or bowls, arrange the layers in the following order: yogurt, granola, yogurt, fruit and so on. • Top it off with a drizzle of honey, a dash of cinnamon and roasted almonds. This delightful treat makes a great & nutritious snack filled with protein, carbs and fats and is quick to put together.

You can have your cake, and eat it too. Here are a few other tips to keep it healthy in Ramadan: • Follow the sunnah when breaking your fast by having dates and water. • Eat fruits on an empty stomach instead of after your meal. • Opt for healthier dessert options. • Stay hydrated. • Eat small meals. • Engage in exercises like brisk walking. • Don’t skip suhoor! Captain William Henry Irvine Shakespear (1878-1915).

Born in Bombay, Shakespear served in many posts in British India before finally making his way to the interiors of Arabia. Fluent in multiple languages including Arabic and working as a British Political Agent in Kuwait, William Shakespear went on many expeditions to the Arabian heartland. His most famous journey is one wherein he traveled from Kuwait to the Red Sea, mapping and documenting many areas that 82 DESTINATION RIYADH JUNE 2017

were unexplored by Europeans. Prior to this, he even made an overland journey to England traveling through Persia, Turkey and Europe on his Rover motorcar. It was this very car that he used for many of his travels in the Arabian desert. During these expeditions, he became acquainted with King Abdulaziz, who was at that time the Emir of Najd. He mapped and studied the region in great detail and also managed to convince the future King to allow him to shoot his first photograph. This was taken by his plate camera.

Shakespear seemed fond of Ibn Saud, who he described as “a fair, handsome man... of genial and very courteous manner.” The companionship and camaraderie between the two men laid the groundwork for the relationship that was to develop between Saudi Arabia and Britain. Shakespear died in the Battle of Jarrab, he was only 37. Shortly after his death, a treaty drafted by him was signed between Britain and Ibn Saud that gave the Saudi rule in Arabia its first international recognition.

He has his name inevitably etched with Saudi Arabia’s formation years. He played a key role not only by taking one of the first photographs of many places in inland Arabia but also for trying to get Britain to recognize the growing power of Ibn Saud.
