A TRIBUTE TO ENDURING FASHION
ISSUE 55 SEPTEMBER 2017
FROM THE EDITOR
“I just love fashion,” said the late great David Bowie. This issue, we flip through the fashion pages of our history, highlighting the Kingdom’s regions and their respective traditional wear. In the business section, meet the people who do their best to preserve our culture, and the organizations that transform tradition into sustainable business models. We bring you the story of some of Riyadh’s double-lifers, those who are testament to the pursuit of passion: a doctor moonlighting as a dancer, and a software engineer cum fashion designer. In our fashion section, we give you the best options for a drastic makeover, and for our male readers, we’ve set you up with the perfect outfits for all occasions. Now, you have no excuse not to look good. We’ve also included a brief history of abayas, because in order to know where you’re going, you need to know where you come from. We share some must-try drinks, and some must-visit places to study or chill in Riyadh – just don’t forget to check out our health section to offset the damage our dining section will do.

MAKING SCHOOL MORE AFFORDABLE Five tips to help parents manage budgets and expenses. By Amr Banaja, VP of Corp Comm and Marketing, SEDCO
1
Banks can help with finances.
Paying two or three checks for considerable amounts is difficult. In response, banks now offer installment plans that help spread payments of tuition fees over six or 12 months, at profit rates starting from as low as 0%. Check with your school whether you can stretch the payment frame.
12 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017
2
Quality over quantity (of fees).
3
Transportation can be fun.
A school with the highest fees does not necessarily guarantee a better, more qualitative education. The two primary factors that should play a big role in your decisions are the curriculum – the kind of education you want for your child – and your budget. Finding the balance is key.
School transportation costs are also growing. A more costeffective and fun alternative is to drop the children off yourself. If that’s difficult, you can consider carpooling services offered by companies like CarpoolWorld, which are less cost lesser in comparison.
4
Homemade vs. school-made food.
5
Extra-curricular family.
Another way to save up is to choose homemade meals over the school’s catering supply.
These activities play a big role in your child’s character formation, so it’s important to keep them going. You can look at off-campus institutes that offer the same services for lower costs, or you can engage the entire family in weekly activities like hiking.
COURTESY/ALWAHASCHOOL.NET
As a result of a tremendous hike in school operations costs, tuition fees are increasing around the country. If you’re a parent and you’re not sure what to do, you’ll find these 5 budget friendly tips helpful.

BUSINESS
When two crises arise at the same time, why tackle one when you can tackle both? By Areeb Al Shathri
When Herfah, Torathuna and Art of Heritage saw the interest in local craft declining and that unemployment was high, they decided to step in and kill two birds with one stone. These organizations are dedicated to preserving traditional crafts and clothing. But what is more impressive is how they do it. They do not mass-produce these items,
14 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017
and instead hand make them the way they were originally supposed to be made. And the cherry on top is they use Saudi hands to make them.
HERFAH
Herfah is mainly a women’s cooperative in Qassim. Their purpose is to nurture and encourage productive families, especially women. Their mothers, and their mothers before them taught the women who weave the sadus the craft. What Herfah does is take this valued tradition and allow these women to turn it into a viable source of income. Herfah teamed up with fashion designer Naeema Al Shuhail to create Herfah by Naeema.

PRESERVING CULTURE
As time goes by, we as a society begin to chip away pieces of our culture. This is not to say it’s necessarily bad, it’s needed sometimes. However, it does not mean that we should abandon all of them all together.
ART OF HERITAGE
Art of Heritage is a charity that aims to collect and converse Saudi heritage. They currently have the largest archive of Saudi textiles. Traditional textiles aren’t the only things on their portfolio; garments, carpets, jewelry, artifacts and even doors are all produced and showcased there. You’ll find pretty much everything. Yadawy, which means handmade in Arabic, is a division of Art of Heritage that is entirely dedicated to pottery. Yadawy is Art of Heritage’s long-term commitment to creating a sustainable income for some of the most challenged and financially unstable women in Saudi Arabia.
COURTESY PHOTO
TORATHUNA
Torathuna is another organization with the aim to promote traditional culture. Targeting entrepreneurs instead of artisans, Torathuna’s objective is to create companies and manufacturing jobs within the field of local products and culture. They help set up businesses and provide mentorship and guidance along the way.
Both organizations try to carry the mantle of traditional Saudi crafts and fashion. With the trend moving towards cultural wear, let’s help them carry it by heading there instead of a mass-produced foreign label. Just ‘cause you can’t pronounce the brand, doesn’t make it better. Sustainable fashion and conscious enterprises aren’t trends, they should be the future. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 15

THE ART OF FASHION The inspiring journey of Razan Alazzouni, Saudi’s premier fashion designer By Dalia Darweesh
Alazzouni graduated from The School of Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts and earned her degree in studio art with a minor in art history. For her final dissertation, her project entailed designing a fashion clothing collection using disposable paper and documenting people’s reactions to it. Everyone was so dazzled by her creativity that she ended up selling a dress out of that collection. Thus, her fashion design career began. 16 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017
STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA AL DAWOOD
Saudi fashion designer Razan Alazzouni’s love and interest in fashion, alongside her naturalborn designing skills, has made her a top-tier fashion designer. The feminine and sculptural designs that she creates are worn by many Hollywood stars, such as Elizabeth Banks and Emma Roberts.
Practically everything we see in her collections, from beading and embroidery to structure and cuts, are inspired by art and sculptures. Alazzouni says that if she hadn’t pursued her passion in fashion design, she would’ve been a museum curator. What’s noteworthy about Alazzouni’s story is that her two business partners are her sisters, so each one brings with them their own unique style and personality that provides enough differing opinions to achieve a well-rounded fashion house.
To have a successful fashion house you have to have a certain style that’s distinct from other brands. — Razan Alazzouni
That’s why the Razan Alazzouni brand has its own classy, sophisticated and whimsical style. However, they do keep up with trends and the latest fashion forecast in terms of colors and cuts. Of course, any new business has its challenges. “At first, the idea was foreign and new to everyone,” said Alazzouni. “In a country where there were no fashion houses, I was starting something new. I was exporting clothing. Why do so, when I can simply import clothing?” Well, exporting has proven lucrative after all. They are currently based in Khobar, London and planning on opening a new office in Riyadh soon. Meanwhile, they’re
now adding accessories and elegantly simple shoes to their ever-expanding fashion line. Alazzouni had parting words of advice for those who were just starting their fashion design journey. “If it’s easy, then it’s not worth it,” she said. “If you really want something, then you have to keep going no matter what until you find a solution. Have your own style that sets you apart and never imitate.”

ORIGINAL THREADS Celebrating traditional fashion across the Kingdom.
The thobe nashal is still worn today in special occasions such as weddings and Eid gatherings.
18 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017
STAFF PHOTO/ ALZAHRA AL DAWOOD
By Mariam Al Ghareeb and Noura Al Joaib
Traditional clothing is an important aspect of Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage. Yet, in a drive towards modernity, this facet of our heritage is not as celebrated as it should despite its unquestionable beauty. In this issue, we pay tribute to the “Original Threads” that have been worn by women of different regions, honor their eclectic fashion sense and celebrate the beautiful diversity of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
EASTERN PROVINCE SHARQIYA The thobe nashal is a familiar piece of the Eastern Province and is made up of a semitransparent material that can be used through multiple colors of base-clothing fabrics with a differentiation in metal threads and silk embroideries. The translucent style itself is typical of the hot interiors of the Gulf lands and is said to be derived from Najdi origins due to the share of the basic pattern with the age-old cotton thobe. The festive finery of the traditional garment comprises a sheer overdress accompanied by lavish sleeve openings and a head cloak. Its sequined embroidery holds representational motifs of flowers and birds and includes accent-pattern segments like panels and gussets. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 19
SOUTHERN PROVINCE
JANOUB
The Bayt al Fakih is a southern-Arabian cottondress piece originating from Northern Yemen. It holds a societal viewpoint as one of the earliest and most authentic of pieces in Arabia. The traditional garment is seemingly distinct in design due to the astounding elements used through the application of colored braids and silver metal threads that are set to warmly complement the indigo-based cloth. Additionally, the thread used on the nomadic apparel showcases the popular form of the decorative elements used in design within the southern region of Saudi Arabia. The garment itself is normally slim-fitting in order to enhance the components of the materials used in design. 20 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017
The enrichment of dĂŠcor applied embodies the traditional and modernized design segments of regional influences, ranging from the Sarawat mountains in Asir to the desert terrains in Oman.

CENTRAL PROVINCE
NA JD
The Najdi Bedouin women’s traditional thobe is a unique black garment tailored through the use of fine linen, soft cotton or lightweight wool. The Central Arabian attire is derived from the kaftan, a loose clothing item which holds variance to the robe and tunic, and is worn as an over-garment to one’s clothes in respect to the ruling of the Kingdom upon modest dressing standards, though it was once worn to ease the endurance towards Saudi’s heat through its flair in cool wear. Moreover, this conventional piece expresses gracefulness and comfort through the looks of its loose-fitting features and is suited to make the perfect maternity dress. 22 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017
This spectacular gown provides reminiscence to the romantic tales of the Arabian desert life long ago.
DESTINATIONKSA.COM 23
NORTHERN PROVINCE
SHAMAAL The traditional thobe styles of the northern region differ from the mainstream portrayal of Bedouin dressing styles. It's fashioned by the use of hand-loomed wool needed to tailor the deep-red and, in rare occurrences, green materials. The tribal dress of the north holds the finest of subtleties in design with the use of geometrically botanical motifs and embroidery against the ruby-colored fabric.
The thobe itself is beltless and holds grand proportions to ensure loose-fitting features when in wear, similar to an abaya. No waist belts are worn to unveil one’s figures as the conditions within the region are extremely hot and such fastenings wouldn’t ensure comfort when attached. Overall, the fabrication presents the primary influences of the temperature, terrain and topography of the respective region relative to design.
This particular ensemble reigns in the region of Ha’il. The farther one goes up north, the heavier the fabric. That is due to the harsh winters of the northern region; winters that don’t compare to other regions of the Kingdom. Even the color of fabric begins to differ the farther you travel, becoming darker and more somber. 24 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017
WESTERN PROVINCE
HIJAZ
The Hijazi women’s traditional thobe is a semi-transparent, capacious gown made up of cotton gauze and is used in the design of multicolored fabrics. Its unique and customary style holds layered clothing items and presents beautiful embroidery components from head to toe. Though the Hijazi thobe is designed using smallscale sizing proportions, it’s cut in a similar manner to the Najdi thobe. The thobe styles of the western region design their cultural attire in an ideal manner with the intent of initiating one’s attention to the custom-made blouse. A unique addition to this is the zabun and the mudawwarah. The zabun is a traditional, princess-styled frock that is fashioned in the manner of a collar and is mainly worn by the townswomen of Hijaz. Meanwhile, the mudawwarah is a complementary headgear to the outfit with elaborate edging and a diamond brooch. Both accentuate the grace and detail of the Hijazi thobe. Amina Al Jassim We would like to express our deep gratitude and appreciation to Saudi fashion designer Amina Al Jassim for providing us with traditional clothing from her own designs, through her brand Dar Breesem, for Sharqiya, Janoub, Shamal and Najd clothing and accessories too. amina_aljassim Nadia Halabi A special thank you to Nadia Halabi for her assistance, and for providing the Hijazi traditional attire. Pieces for Men Dear men. This is a gentle reminder from your loving sister to clean yourselves up. By Areeb Al Shathri
The best part of men’s clothing is that you don’t need that much to make it work. You literally have everything you need to look good in your closet as we speak!
Brands/Brands for Less (Localizer Mall): Pick up a suit you like and they’ll tailor fit it for you.
There’s just one problem with it. The key to men’s clothing, which can mean the difference between chic and bleak, is the fit. Tailor fitting your clothes is the best way to ensure style. Relax, it’s not as hard as you think it is. You don’t have to tailor fit your t-shirts, but thobes and suits are a must.
A good suit is bound to make an impact. It might be initially pricey, but its versatility is worth it. A tailored suit can literally take you from a meeting to a night out, just take off the tie, roll up your pants and you’re out the door!

THOBES
Thobes are a staple in a Saudi closet, but for goodness sake do not buy cheap thobes! We’re not asking you to break the bank, but the right material does come at a price. Just like a suit, a well-tailored thobe can be the most comfortable thing you’ve ever worn, and still manage to turn heads. Prince Sultan and Takhassousi: This strip of Thalatheen on the west side of King Fahad Rd. has sveral reasonably priced thobe shops which can tailor your thobe to fit you better.
Avoid bedazzling.
The shemagh is to the thobe what the tie is to the suit. The mirzam, that little bend in the shemagh right above the forehead, should be neat.
Stick to the basic colors like grey, black or blue if it’s your first suit. Tom Ford (Centria Mall): Pros tailor a suit from scratch for you.

Unconventional Evolution of Abayas And their current status. By Safa Hassan
It started off as a long, black, voluminous robe worn in Saudi. Now it's known globally and has caught the interest of fashion designers.
1980 - 1990
The Shapeless One The first abayas were basic, boring and plain. They were shapeless black cloaks that covered from head to toe seamlessly. They were highly monotonous too!
30 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017
It took quite an evolution before we arrived at the shapes and shades we see today. Here are a few abaya styles that we all remember.
1990 - 2003
2004 - present
Black on Black
For Weightlifters
This was the fashion of late ‘90s and early 2000s. Black lace, black rhinestones and even black sparkle was used on a - wait for it - black abaya. Most common was black lace on sleeves.
The era of heavy embroidery or rhinestones was tough to handle. You'll still find them in the market. The edgy ones had shoulder caps with spiky details.
Did you know in the 1970s – 1980’s abayas were not as compulsory as they are today?
2007 - present
Butterfly or Midnight Bats?
The butterfly abayas changed everything and introduced a new dimension. This, along with double butterfly, became really popular in Riyadh.
2008 - present
Stiff Necks
The Chinese collar trend was quickly adapted. It gave the shoulders a structured look. The the collars were lined with colorful lace that extended down the front.

Sporty Casuals
Comfortable and perfect for everyday use, these abayas are expressive of identity and attitude. The Illustrator: Ahmad Mitan a fashion designer who graduated in Ready To Wear Haute Couture in 2003 from Esmad University in Paris. Tel: +966-558962882 ahmadmitan

BEYOND BASICS: Shaving, Micro Braids and Colors A shift from the mainstream. By Yara Alhazmi
This summer, the heat should be the least of your worries as hairstylists have come up with extremely cool hair trends: shaving, micro braids and fascinating hair colors. These hairstyles have taken over.
1. Shaving
Shaving is not just a hairstyle, it’s a statement. A lady’s beauty is not measured by the length of her hair. If you’re feeling ballsy shave your head completely. If not, shave a part. Your head is a stencil; make it a masterpiece. Sahar Al Nasser, a Saudi hairstylist, learned the art of shaving. She is a young pioneer who acquired her skills from a workshop in Dubai and two years of practice; from the basics like how to hold the scissors perfectly to studying different equipments and face shapes. Grateful for the constant support of her parents, she hopes to achieve a Masters in hairstyling and starting her own salon.

These braids can last two months as they are somewhat permanent, but not more.
2. Hair Coloring
The hair coloring game gets better. Bold, daring and bright hair colors tend to give you a new personality and make you feel more confident. From cinnamon to platinum, Michelle Carey does it all. She is a licensed hairstylist from Paul Mitchell School. This American cosmetologist, who resides in Riyadh, is more than just a stylist. She is passionate about making people happy and satisfied by playing with their hair. The best thing about her: she knows how to give you the color you want without damaging your hair. Besides, she makes the sessions fun.
3. Micro Braid
Braiding is one of the best ways to deal with frizz or an oily scalp. By adding color and lengthy extensions to your hair, you can make your braids look unique. The process is long, but totally worth it. There’s bound to be some tugging, but your hair will always be on fleek. Asma, a Riyadhi hairstylist, has aced the braid game. She makes the process fun and gets through it quickly. Mob: +966-551586682
Michelle Tips: • Washing colored hair with cold water won’t shed as much pigment as compared to hot water. • Take a shower every other day. It’s best for all hair type. • While bleaching, take it slow and know of what to expect. Besides, don’t forget Olaplex. Email: monica184@hotmail.com Haircologist

ICE QUEEN
By Safa Hassan
Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray
1. Make It Last
Make your makeup last more than seven hours with a suitable primer or a makeup setting spray. A primer preps your face, minimizes the appearance of pores, avoids a cakey look, gives your makeup a smooth finish and makes your make up last long! There are various primers to suit every skin type. BareMinerals Well-Rested Face & Eye Brightener
Laura Mercier Candleglow Concealer & Brightener
If you feel like your complexion is dull, revive it with ice. Take a bowl of water and pop in some ice cubes. All you need to do is dunk your face in this bowl a few times, for like 1015 seconds. It will tighten your skin and de-puff your eyes… naturally!
MAC Prep & Prime Skin Base
2. During Finals, Bring Out the Brighteners
They provide concealing and lightening effects to make you look lesszombie-more-babe even during the rough high tides of life. Opt for a suitable tone of brightener to diminish your under-eye dark circles and puffiness.
3. Lipstick or Blush? Both!
This is such a quick way to look healthy every day, like you don’t even require. Carrying a two-inone saves time during application and it’ll ensure that you carry tones of lipstick/blush that make you look natural, rather than party-ish.
Benefit’s Cha-Cha Tint
Tip: Apply it in a triangular shape under your eyes.

4. The No. 3 Bronzer Rule
Never (I repeat, NEVER) apply a bronzer or a bronzing highlighter all over your face… unless you want to look sun burned. Apply the bronzer in the shape of the number three, from your temples, over your cheekbones and covering your jawline. This will give you the most natural looking contour, ever!

ARTIST’S CORNER MEET THIS MONTH’S EMERGING ARTIST! We explore the work of a 26-year old Saudi expressionist painter. By Reema Al Humaid
NAME: Rana Almaghlouth AGE: 26 OCCUPATION:
Expressionist painter
What do you do other than painting?
I work as a communications engineer at Saudi Aramco.
What’s your medium?
My medium is heavy body acrylic paint. I use brushes but my go to tools are palette knives. There’s just something about the use of palette knives
that gives the painting a more vivid and powerful feel.
What kinds of artwork inspire you?
Artworks that are more focused on expression through shapes and color. The beauty of abstract art is that its sole purpose is to express as opposed to delivering a message or telling a story. Like any other form of art, the end result is important but with abstract expressionism, the artist is more interested in the process of creation rather than how a painting may turn out. It’s what experience and energy you are gaining or releasing throughout the process that matters.
Why do you paint?
What’s the hardest part of being a painter?
Dedication. A lot of people think that talent is something 44 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017
COURTESY PHOTO
There’s something about painting that is quite energizing, and you are releasing that energy and transforming it into something that is visual. My process is a more intuitive one, with a focus on “dynamic and energetic” gesture which allows me to value the process. This technique allows for continuous improvisation and exploration across the canvas, it leaves room for experimentation which is the essence of creation.
Most fun piece you worked on? Why?
A triptych, 4 x 2.5 m commission seascape painting that I am currently working on. I’ve always enjoyed working on larger scale canvases. With size you are create a greater impact for the viewer.
What are you planning to do with your paintings?
Most of my paintings are put up for sale unless reserved for upcoming shows, some are currently being displayed in Jeddah and Kuwait, others are commissions.
What would you do if you weren’t a painter?
Not being a painter is not an option for me but if it were, I think my current day job would keep me busy enough. If we’re talking hypothetically, it would be in oceanology.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE ARTISTS?
Rothko, J.M.W. Turner, Theodor Alexander, Jackson Pollock, and Helen Frankenthaler.
that is just given to you when in most cases, it’s about putting in the hours. The only reason why I am able to paint the way I can now is because I chose to invest in painting. Because I work in layers, a lot of my
paintings require that I paint continuously for 12 hours per layer. The only way you learn new techniques, especially with knife painting, is if you experiment and allow yourself to explore, that takes time.

DOCTOR DANCE Dr Khadija on her passion for dance By Safa Hassan
Dance is another form of therapy and I can use it as another tool to help people. — Khadija Al Sheikh
Khadija Al Sheikh is a general practitioner by day and a passionate Afro and hip-hop dancer by night. She teaches a dance class that has become a sanctuary for Riyadhi women who want to sway their stress away.
Why did you want to become a doctor?
Medicine and dancing are poles apart. How did dancing come in the picture?
As a child, I loved performing. It's how I communicated with strangers. I attended weddings to dance. My room became my studio/stage, and it still is. I consider dance as my first language. 46 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017
STAFF PHOTO/NAWAF AL FARRAJ
I saw it as a tool that I can use to help people and make a change in their lives.
As a practitioner, your schedule must be pretty tight. How do you manage dancing?
During my first semester in college, dance came to a halt. The load of studying was crazy and the schedule was intense. During my second semester, I wasn't myself anymore. College and home was all that became of my life. That was not how I wanted to live. So, after studying for half an hour at a stretch, I started rewarding myself by dancing for 5-10 minutes per day or by watching dance videos. Sometimes, I got carried away and ditched studying!
If you could pursue dancing and make a living out of it, would you let go of medicine?
Honestly, I would. My perception of helping people changed after I started teaching dance. After class, my students would leave with a different energy than what they had earlier. They are positive, energized and euphoric. Not to devalue medicine, which is a beautiful way to give back to the world… but that’s not me. I had a paradigm shift – dance is another form of therapy and I can use it as another tool to help people.
Can you name some of your dance role models?
I look up to so many dancers. Here are some: Kevin Paradox, Shaun Evaristo, Keone and Mari, Senna Amarnis, Laure Courtellemont, Josh Williams,
I consider dance as my first language.
Moto Dancers Dubai, Kapela Willdabeast and so many more. I cannot list them all!
What is the status of dance in Riyadh?
There are passionate dancers here; however, the dance culture hasn’t reached its threshold yet. Most of us are freestyle dancers. We lack the basics. We need more dancers to travel to learn from international dance teachers. After that, they should return back and share their knowledge to help grow the dance scene in Saudi Arabia.
DR KHADIJA’S WISH LIST
FOR THE DANCE SCENE IN RIYADH: • More dance studios • Increased interest in dance • To have official Saudibased dance events • Dance to be recognized as a beautiful art khadija.alsheikh92 deejm92 khadija.alsheikh / Moveriyadh

DOUBLE LIFE, DOUBLE FUN Can career and passion go hand in hand? By Safa Hassan
Not everyone ends up pursuing what they love as a career. Some have to work hard to manage a well-paid day job alongside their passion. Such dedication often results in getting the best of both worlds. These Riyadhis have learned the art of living a double life on the edge of sword.

He also found it calming and a way to unwind after a rough day. He started with street art and trained himself via YouTube videos. After getting the hang
of it, he upgraded his style by mixing street art with portraits. Most of his artwork is of wild animals. He incorporates a different technique to each artwork. Now, he is a dedicated doc by day and an artist by night. slickdesigns

After achieving his passion and lifelong dream of becoming a doctor, Mohammed Al Otaibi was looking for a way to de-stress. The stressfully long shift hours, multiple surgeries and delivering babies came with Ob-Gyn residency. That’s when art came into picture. “Art was a beautiful mistake.”
ENGINEERED JEANS
Louay Helaby (software engineer) and his brother Maher Helaby (a marketing manager), were driven by the aim to be more in life. Despite the large age gap, both brothers shared the same love for fashion, especially jeans, as they owned about 150 pairs of jeans. They were picky and concentrated on the tiniest detail before buying a pair. Their shared fondness got them exploring the streets of Italy for advice and inspiration from one of the biggest denim brand: Diesel. It wasn’t long before the Helaby brothers started their own brand of jeans.

multiple positive messages in the pockets of their jeans. Whenever you plan to wear your JeanZee, you can pick a positive message to keep you in good spirits through the day. They wish to build a better tomorrow by contributing to the empowerment of youth through positivity, and also by

OVER-AGED AND UNDER-GAMED Young or old, you’ll still buy these games. By Yara Jan
Most board games and card games are usually thought of as “lame”, but you need to realize that the games industry is changing and emerging big time. If you’re not sure where to start and what games you should get, here are some of our personal recommendations.
Playing Cards
Your classic deck of cards have brought people together for ages, adding to their sleepovers, gatherings, or even long road trips and flights. What’s special about these cards is you can play SO many games with it. The famous Baloot, KonKan, Harb and Ghamza are all games we used to play as kids and still do as adults! And let’s not forget about Tarneeb, the crown jewel of non-gender card games.
T7t Lt7t
A game of bluffing and disguise. Pretending to be a character you are not whilst trying to eliminate other players before they eliminate you. Are you good at bluffing? There’s only one way to find out. I guarantee you, it is a very fun game just try not to get caught lying, or else... you’re out. 50 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017
Sheesh
Remember our old-style kind of games? Ladder and snake, and so? Sheesh shares the same concept. What is special about it is that you play colored pins, and the board is a stuffed swatch of fabric. For you to win the game, your team has to eliminate all eight characters of the other team before they reach the goal. What also makes it special, personally speaking, is that the game’s materials are recycled. What’s better than taking care of our planet?
Tar Min Agli
You think you memorized all the daily brands of products you use? Well, you thought wrong. This game is made to challenge you as a group to immediately mention names of specific products when you get a matching card with someone else. It is a game full of laughs, confusions and tongue twists. What’s more pleasing are the colors and graphics of the game. I’m telling you, it’s the first thing you’ll notice.
Jalsah
Okay, let’s say you don’t have the time to go and buy a physical game and you spent all your money on food and ice-cream (cause, well, I do). It’s okay. just download the Jalsah app for free and enjoy a mixture of charades and truth or dare. But, here’s the twist: someone can create his or her own card to surprisingly challenge the rest! But, I’ve been having severe withdrawals from a lack of fun shows that depict strong kickass women, and this one fits the bill. Plus, the Doc Holiday character is a delight to watch.
KILLJOYS Speaking of kickass women, this show’s lead epitomizes that to a T. A space show about bounty hunters, I’m enjoying this a lot more thanks to the sci-fi setting and the rich world-building that gets infused effortlessly into the environment, the dialogue and the action on screen. Some folks like dressing themselves up, others like dressing up desserts. The Destination Riyadh team is a fun mix of both, so when faced with a chance to up our collective baking and styling game, we didn’t say no (there may have also been a promise of unlimited icing and cream).
Magnolia Bakery, a quaint bake shop that first opened in New York City and now has a branch in Riyadh, invited us to an exclusive cupcakedecorating workshop. Thanks to their chefs, we not only learned a lot about frosting cakes and cupcakes, our team – noobs and pros alike – also got to unleash their creative side.

FROSTING TRICKS WE PICKED UP: • If the buttercream is stiff, add a bit more milk. • Aim to make the frosting’s consistency similar to toothpaste. • Dip an entire cupcake – icing and all – into a bowl of sprinkles.

SWEET, ENOUGH Get off your sugar high and start living right. By Khadija Kareem
Sugar is addictive, which is why getting it out of your system requires conscious effort. Once you stay constant though, your body will automatically develop a new habit and it will get much easier for you to maintain a healthier lifestyle.
EASE YOURSELF OFF IT SLOWLY
Slower changes, tend to last. It’s better for you to take it a step by step. This will help your brain accept the change and your body has time to adjust. By diminishing the amount gradually, it will be less noticeable and your cravings will lessen too. If you're used to adding two spoons of sugar to your tea or coffee, try cutting it to one spoon for a week, then keep reducing the amount to zero. Or you could use other sweetening alternatives such as, honey, cinnamon, vanilla extract or a slice of orange for a refreshing sweetness.
MOVE YOUR BODY
Exercise, do some yoga or even dance. Whatever movement your little heart desires will help boost your energy, reduce tension and decrease the need for a sugar lift. 62 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017
A GOOD BREAKFAST
The best way to start your day is to have a breakfast full of lean protein (eggs, turkey, tuna) and healthy fats (nuts, dairy, olives), instead of a typical meal of carbs and sugary food. You will feel more satisfied and energetic, it will also help with your blood sugar levels and prevent cravings throughout the day.
GIVE YOURSELF RULES
It is essential that you set clear rules about desserts in order to stick to them. Give yourself cheat days to have desserts, like weekends or special occasions. Or you can choose the have one candy a day or a small portion of a dessert trick, just to stave of the craving.
DRINK MORE WATER
Hydrating properly with water gives you energy, quell your appetite, help with your sugar cravings and boost your metabolism. Sometimes, we mistake dehydration for hunger or food craving. Have a big bottle of water next to you. For flavor lovers, squeeze half a lemon or add slices of ginger and mint leaves.
BARGAIN AND BARTER
Trade natural sweeteners with sugar. Dates are loaded with potassium, copper, iron, magnesium and vitamin B6 and we have a ton of it at home. I encourage you to make your own dessert or sweeteners. Look into using agave syrup and natural jams or turning to fruits should you crave sweetness. • Date & coffee muffins • Date paste • Skinny oat cookies for starter zero sugar recipes, check out our website: www.destinationryd.com
DONT KEEP TREATS IN THE HOUSE:
It’s difficult to snack on things that aren’t there! If you have a bucket of Baskin Robbins in your freezer, it makes total sense to devour it. GYM FAILS
If you are guilty of any of these, you need to reevaluate what you stand for. By Areeb Al Shathri
Non-Yoga Pants
Not all leggings are created equal. Some are created to make you comfortable, some to make you look good, and some to withstand stretching without revealing… too much of you. Dudes, you should really avoid tights, unless they are under your shorts.
Leather shoes on a treadmill are like flipflops on an ice rink. You may think it’s fine, but I’m sure your feet will hate you for what you’ve put them through. Sneakers are the only appropriate gym shoes.
Tima, Zia
We applaud your dedication to fashion, but if your gym outfit is too tight or too elaborate, you’re doing it wrong. If you’re out to impress, do it with your reps and form, not your outfit.
DR Tip: Due to Riyadh’s lack of humidity, the majority of us won’t break sweat easily, which is why you need breathable garments to regulate your internal temperature. Invest in good, absorbing material and steer clear of cotton. 66 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017
Folks, who are we trying to kid? Perfume and sweat do not mix well. Whatever happened to trusty ol’ deodorant? They’re relatively odorless and do not induce vomit in your gymmates. Ladies, if you’re looking for extra protection, try men’s deodorants.
Leather Shoes
Local active wear we love for women:
Style Over Stability
Perfume
Where to get sneakers: Sun and Sand Sports, outlet shops for U-Mark, Nike, etc. are at Al Oruba Mall. If you’re patient, you’ll score a pretty good deal on a pair, especially this September.
Short-Shorts
Gentlemen, please make sure you remain gentlemen by maintaining a correct shorts-to-thigh ratio. If there’s more thigh than shorts, we have a problem.
DR Tip: Training shoes are okay for running on a treadmill. But if you’re planning to rack up some miles outdoors, we recommend shoes that can take above 3.7-5 km.

CRÈME DE LA CRÈME By Jou Pabalate
Every pastry chef has a unique style of his or her own; ideas and techniques are as varied as they come. However, when it comes to using the ingredients, there is a consensus – culinary masters agree that the use of fresh, high-quality dairy products is essential to making the finest desserts. To help us understand the delicate beauty of European cream, Destination was whisked away to Singapore. There, renowned pastry chefs from different countries convened at the At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy for the anticipated La Crème de la Crème pastry event.

Destination went on an indulgent odyssey in Singapore to discover the wonders of European cream.
The three-day gastronomic adventure successfully showcased the superiority of European cream. Ten international chefs, including Chef Mayada Badr from Saudi Arabia, were challenged to present their interpretation of this year’s theme: Blanc de Blanc (white on white). White offers its own culinary range and proposes new gastronomic sensations – an invitation to the chefs to use their pure imagination. The chefs were given complete free reign to create absolute masterpieces using a combination of new and classic recipes, and traditional and contemporary baking techniques. The cream, which is the hero ingredient, remains as the integral element in each cake – discreet, glossy, unctuous, and reassuring. We witnessed in awe as the pastry chefs defined, reimagined, and ultimately
Culinary mastery and quality cream can "make" a cake.
created dreamy interpretations of the theme. They hustled and bustled in a kitchen that felt like an episode from Iron Chef. Another highlight of this edition was a special workshop with one of Paris’ top pastry chefs, Nicolas Bacheyre. We were able to see how European cream is able to elevate every creation. Our senses were titillated, surrounded by the scent of fresh vanilla and visually captivated as Chef Nicolas demonstrated to us how he has mastered the use of cream. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 73

European cream is instantly recognizable by its texture and highly developed aroma, characterized by its roundness, smoothness and a bright, fresh taste. Due to its high standards and authenticity, European cream carries strong values that reflect the professionalism of the top pastry chefs. During the workshop, we saw the difference the choice of ingredients can make especially in a delicate culinary art such as pastries.

After two days of preparations and for us, a journey of discovery, the international chefs presented their masterpieces at Forlino. Their final recipes will be published in an illustrated recipe book, which will be a training tool for students’ annual workshops. Needless to say, as much as we revelled in the stunning aesthetics, we looked forward to indulging our palettes. Indeed, they were delicious. The complex techniques achieved flavors that take you through a process; others were surprises folded under cream that rendered it simple yet elegant at the same time. The dessert of Chef Sarah Ni from China wowed us with the intricacy in her work. The five elements were aptly represented through varying layers and flavors, all coming together through the clever use of the cream. When it comes to gorgeous sweetness, Michelin-star chef Nicolas Lambert created a pavlova that was insta-ready. As always, we were left
with a better understanding of fine ingredients and what Europe has to offer. But equally important perhaps is the gastronomic diplomacy that takes place through these events. The way European cream was adapted and honed by our star chefs to complement and in ways, infuse with their respective countries’ culture and palette is quintessential. European cream and the use of quality ingredients is not a practice or preference limited by geography. Rather, it is a universally accepted fact – top pastry chefs only use the best products to create the most wonderful desserts.
CHEF MAYADA’S “AL HUDA”
We would have to say that in terms of flavor, taste, and clever use of cultural elements (a thumbs-up in our books), Chef Mayada’s Al Huda is unforgettable, with its ice cream infused with hints of rosewater, a gahwa and halawa core that, to this day, we’re still craving. It was a showstopper.

The Riyadhi Guide to Packing Right - Dude Edition Because no suitcase is large enough to deal with mess. By Safa Hassan
There’s a lot to consider when packing for a trip abroad, like, the reason, duration, weather and the luggage weight limitation. Honestly, it’s quite easy to pack extra or less than needed and end up with a messy situation. To avoid inefficient packing, here are ways to utilize the space that available to you:
1. PACK STRICTLY
Decide your outfits. Pair your tops with the bottoms and mix n’ match to save on space. If you don’t think you’ll wear it, don’t keep it.
Pack three tops for every bottom.
76 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017
Instead of folding your casual tees, roll them. They occupy less space this way and don’t crease much. After folding your jeans lengthwise, roll it tightly starting from the bottom. You can roll your undergarments, pair of socks, chinos and shorts. Stack your rolls in the bottom of the suitcase and create an even layer.
STAFF PHOTO/SAFA HASSAN
2. ROLL THEM
3. FORMAL WEAR RULE
Most of the formals should be folded minimally and laid flat on top of everything. Cover your formals in a dry cleaning bag before folding, as the plastic prevents creasing. Roll your thobe as folding it will create edges that are creased into the fabric.
4. STUFF YOUR SHOES
If you’re low on space, stuff your shoes with small or delicate items. You can stuff your shoes with rolled pair of socks to maintain their shape. You can also pack leak-proof toiletries or pack your hair ties and clips in a small pouch and stuff it in the shoes.
Fold your blazer inside out. Any creasing that could happen will occur on the inside fabric.
GO TO TRAVEL STORE: Mosafer Tahliya St.
If the soles of your shoes are dirty, wrap them in a plastic laundry bag, dryer sheets or an old shower cap.
LOCAL TRAVEL STUFF AREA: Souq Al Taibah Luggages, coat bags, etc. King Fahd Rd.
PLACES TO BUY LUGGAGES (CHEAPER OPTIONS): Azizia Hyperpanda Lulu Department Store Centerpoint
5. TOILETRIES IN TRAVEL FRIENDLY CASES For short trips, transfer some of your toiletries like lotion, shampoo, conditioner, face wash and toothpaste in travel sized cases or bottles. Before putting on the lid, secure the bottle opening with a plastic wrap to avoid leakage.
Remember, it’s almost impossible to not end up with a bit of creasing on your outfits while packing. Following these additional tips may help: • Make sure things stay in place. Avoid movement in the luggage. • Pack heavy clothes like woolen/leather jackets at the bottom and lighter fabrics like linen at the top. Heavier fabrics don’t crease easy.

PURSUING EXCELLENCE AT ROSEWOOD A conversation with Luke Noble, the new Food & Beverage Director Rosewood’s premium hospitality standards are soaring to new heights under the leadership of the new Food & Beverage Director. In his 22 years of service in the hospitality industry, Luke Noble has worked at a restaurant, cafe, lounge and events management company. He worked his way through the ranks and spent the better part of the previous decade in the five-star sector. At Rosewood, Noble works closely with the managers and executive chefs to give guests the premium experience that Rosewood promises. Things look good for the Saudi hotel industry. The government is enhancing the tourism sector and it’s a successful effort. Working at Rosewood, Noble has noticed that the hotel industry is in “a stable and strong position of growth, particularly in Jeddah.” But there are always challenges in any industry. “Realistically, when you look at the scale of the market, everyone will have personal challenges. When you come to Rosewood, you know there will be a consistency of services and excellent quality food will always be present.” 78 DESTINATION RIYADH SEPTEMBER 2017 ADVERTORIAL
Ever since moving to Jeddah, Noble has spent time understanding the local culture and market, to see what’s trending and what Saudis enjoy most. It’s been a different experience compared to his work in Hampshire, England. “The energy in England is frenetic; lots of people are in a rush. Saudis are a calm and friendly people, and it makes my job easier because the staff feels calm and friendly.”
Jeddah’s welcoming atmosphere is perfect for the hospitality industry, and it’s exactly what Rosewood wants. — Luke Noble, Director of F&B, Rosewood Jeddah
Great attention to detail goes into personalizing the Rosewood experience, especially at the restaurants. “If I can get someone to have a good time, it can change that person’s perspective on food,” Noble observed. Rosewood likes to ‘specialize in love.’ Noble has appointed a manager who specifically oversees the Al Malaki Lounge Terrace, where a once-in-alifetime romantic dinner is served to couples at a very reasonable cost. It’s a beautiful arrangement that Rosewood curates with roses, Saudi bubbly, and a dual view of the sunset over the sea and the vast expanse of glittering city.
Luke Noble has been with Rosewood for a few months but already he’s built a connection with the city and its people; the sunny weather adds to the charm. “I have many meetings all day, but the best is speaking to our guests. Many of them are regulars and they’re lovely. The Saudi culture is relaxed and calm, so it’s really the perfect setting for a hotel like Rosewood.” Location: Rosewood Jeddah Hotel, Corniche Rd., Al Shatea Dist. Tel: +966-12-2607111 rwjeddah

Sky Lounge has opened on the 17th floor, a locale that’s quickly becoming a favorite amongst locals. The poolside lounge offers a relaxing evening atmosphere for shisha and conversations. The view is divine, with Jeddah’s beloved fountain looking splendid in the distance.
Rosewood’s restaurants are always busy trying to cater to a variety of tastes, with Sushi Night at Ginza on Mondays, and Seafood Night on Thursdays and a Friday Brunch for families at Habsburg restaurant. Noble says, “Globally people are looking for a taste of home when they dine out. You notice a difference of quality with local produce and catch, so at Rosewood, we’re constantly meeting with suppliers to make sure our products are local and sustainably sourced.”

The rustle of the palm fronds and birdsong had a soothing effect on our senses after an almost 3-hour journey from Madinah. “It’s only a water well was a thought that kept coming to mind as we were driving around the city. But when we reached it, the thoughts faded away and we were beginning to
The well is pretty huge measuring over 18 meters in diameter, this makes it the largest well in peninsular Arabia. It is architecturally intriguing as well; the wooden structure on top has been restored giving it much of an authentic feel and the bricks that hold the well together without mortar are a marvel in themselves. The time-worn bricks have scars of water all over them, but they still appear so sturdy that they seem to be good to stand for decades to follow.
As we reached the rim of the well, we were surprised that there was water in the well. The water was of a bright green color. There were even a number of fishes and turtles thriving in it. We circumambulated the well, with each side of it presenting something new to us. Some portions of the well had wild plants protruding out from the brick walls, they somehow just added to the splendor. hot summer when many wells dry up. But the Haddaj Well hasn’t always been in use, in around the 5th century BCE, Tayma was abandoned, so the well fell into disuse for many centuries until Suleiman al-Gonaim restored it. The water well originally worked on a pulley system. Bucket loads of water would be pulled from the well by means of camels or oxen, which would at times even number close to a hundred. This water would then be put into channels and through these channels, the water would reach nearby farmlands. One can see these pulleys and channels to this day. The channels and pulleys are of no use today, but the Haddaj Well continues to provide water to nearby wells and farmlands by modern water pumping systems. COORDINATES 27.634600, 38.553574

Desert Kites The Ancient Arabian Hunting Technique By Mohammed Mirza
Desert kites were generally constructed on flat land between narrow deeply-incised valleys, where the surroundings would play a big role. In Saudi Arabia, the majority of desert kites are found in the Harrat Khaybar area which is close to Madinah. While archaeologists debate when this technique was created, desert kites are believed to have been built between 4000 BC and 2000 BC. The ancient hunting technique of using desert kites remained long forgotten till airplane pilots spotted them in the 1920s. Named “desert kites” because of their triangular shape, they were primarily used to capture gazelles and other wild animals. They are generally made of two low dry-stone walls arranged in a V-shape, but the enclosure could be in other shapes too. Called “Works of the Old Men” by Bedouins, the idea behind desert kites was to trap a large number of animals.
The game plan
A group of hunters would chase a herd of animals into the opening of the kite-like structure and capture them towards the narrow V-shaped end. Archaeologists believe that groups from various communities would participate in the ordeal together to hunt these wild animals en masse. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 83
