BREAKING LIMITS
Meet Saudi Arabia’s Superhumans
ISSUE 57 NOVEMBER 2017
FROM THE EDITOR
Your Health, Your Wealth What a time to be alive in this day and age. We are spoiled for choice when it comes to the enjoyment of our daily needs like food and shelter, but most importantly, we have countless resources to care for ourselves, and continue to prioritize our physical, mental, and intellectual wellness. This issue is all about maximizing those resources, and being inspired. We are highlighting the nation’s paralympic athletes, a female Saudi trekker, and are providing you with a guide to living an organic lifestyle. We also feature an interview with Saudi public health pioneer Dr. Zohair Sebai, who gives us insight on the improvements our healthcare industry has seen in the past few decades, a testament to this wonderful trend of putting our health on top of our list of concerns. Our contributors also walk us through sidestepping the obstacles we face in our journey to wellness – read about eating healthy, working out with abayas, and chillaxing games to play. All these and so much more, including our poster guide to car ownership, to commemorate the Royal decree allowing women to drive on the streets of Saudi Arabia. Congratulations, my dear Saudis. We’ve come a long way together, and we’ll face this exciting new chapter of our history in good health.

GET KIDS OFF THE STREETS It has become a common sight lately to see children begging at the traffic lights. We can’t keep on turning a blind eye, and its better to curve the situation before it becomes worse. Poverty and lack of employment is what make these children turn to begging and doing laborious jobs on the streets. We need a development program to give life skills training to their parents and enforce a strict “No Child Labor” policy.

IMPROVED HEALTHCARE IN THE KINGDOM An Interview With Public Health Pioneer Dr. Zohair Sebai During the 1950s, only a couple of hospitals had 10 Saudi physicians, which did not even represent 10% of the total number of physicians in the country. But after five decades, there was a rapid growth in public health, and currently there are 462 hospitals and 21,000 Saudi doctors raising the ratio to more than 25% overall. Saudi Arabia is experiencing a major demographic and epidemiological transition, represented by a growing burden of non-communicable diseases, while population expectation of quality care services has been noticeably going up. In addition, quantitative and qualitative development of healthcare services have led to the improvement of reproductive health, maternal and child healthcare services, the reduction of mortality rates and immunization, and to a decrease in vaccinepreventable diseases and the eradication of poliomyelitis at the national level. Islam calls for many acts that lead to a healthy lifestyle – moderation, and the prohibition of alcohol, drugs, adultery and gambling. It emphasizes cleanliness as part of faith and calls for love, understanding and acceptance of others.
We have more hospitals, hospital beds, primary healthcare centers and colleges of medicine – the health budget soared to unprecedented levels. However, the orientation of health services remain curative. There are many efforts to apply preventive and promotive medicine activities, and we are looking for more.
It is recommended to stop eating when 80% full. Do you think Saudis are following this recommendation?
Obesity and its related health problems are a global epidemic, and Saudis are following the global pattern. Proper health education can help to a great extent in solving obesity, as it would translate into healthy lifestyles. This is the most difficult part of health education. From a Qur’anic perspective, Allah says, “Eat and Drink but not to excess.” Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) advised his companions to eat moderately, but if one must add more to his
What is the role of Islam in promoting public health in Saudi Arabia?
What kind of public health changes should we expect in Saudi Arabia in the next 10 years?
Saudi Arabia is adopting a 2030 health strategy. The main tool to implement this ambitious strategy is to prepare the right healthcare personnel, who would carry the holistic approach to health. The process has already started and we are looking forward to dramatic changes in the health services system. Dr. Sebai will be a keynote speaker in Healthcare Innovation & Approaches: Future of Family Medicine in the United Arab Emirates on Feb. 26-28, 2018. WE ALL CAN BE CHAMPIONS The Saudi Paralympic Vision Part of the Kingdom’s 2030 vision is to create a society where all citizens are able to live healthy and be healthy. We imagine a future where everyone is able to participate in sports and activities, with their well-being not as an afterthought but a priority. We see a future that is inclusive, where people with disabilities are able to take part in building the nation. The Paralympic Committee of Saudi Arabia is one of the many ways that people with disabilities are able to explore their full potential. Established in 1991, the Committee’s goal is to raise the level of sports for disabled persons and increase public awareness about the sports and the amazing capabilities of people with disabilities and those with special needs. SAUDI TREK A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. By Areeb Al Shathri
Himalayas to the Everest base camp. Following traditional Saudi norms, Anoud had to get permission from the highest gatekeepers in the Kingdom: Mom and Dad. Arguing her case and addressing what she anticipated as their main concern of safety, she was met with a response she hadn’t expected. “If it’s safe for my daughter, it’s safe for me,” her mother had said, before she joined her. From there, the two pushed each other to train and prepare for the trip. A month after Ramadan, they started their two-week journey to Nepal. Kathmandu was their first stop. Up to this point, Anoud had never gone backpacking, a.k.a.
Public health student Anoud Mutlaq was stalling the inevitable – studying during finals – when she decided to start hiking. Ultimately a group activity, she didn’t let her solo status get in the way of her procrastination. Her first trek was with a group in an area close to Riyadh, and it was love at first step. Like an excited kid with a new hobby, Anoud asked if she could 32 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2017
become a volunteer guide for the group, but her lack of experience got in the way. From her first trip in Dec. 2016 up until April 2017, Anoud put her money where her mouth is and gained the experience she needed to officially be named a guide. And what does a person do after they achieve a goal? They set a new one. Anoud had her eyes set on trekking the

URBAN GARDENING You’ll be snipping fresh herbs and edible plants in your kitchen in no time! By Zahra Anwer
In a concrete desert like Riyadh, a big chunk of the population live in apartments that don’t provide much access to Mother Nature. Here are simple ways to add greens to your otherwise beige existence in the city: 1. Pot 'em up. Before you begin, choose your pot wisely. If the pot is too small, your herbs won't like it; too big, and it won't fit the space at home. If you like, choose colorful containers with drainage holes and set them up for a pretty effect. Make sure you have a saucer under the pots so you don't ruin your windowsill or furniture.
There are nurseries around the city; you don’t have to go as far as Al Khozama District, just head on out to Murooj.
If you plan to eat what you sow, remember that lack of sunshine will leave you with spindly, stressed herbs, and very little flavor.
STAFF PHOTO/NAWAF AL FARRAJ
Buy pots from Ikea, Saco or Abyat.
Tip:
40 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2017
2. No backyard?
No problem!
You can create your own little garden in just a sliver of space. All you need is a sunny windowsill or pop a planter anywhere in your house. If you don't have a reliably sun-lit window, you will need to provide some type of plant lighting.
STAFF PHOTO/JOU PABALATE
3. Feed them right If your plants look like they are struggling, feed them every other month with a fertilizer labeled for use on edible plants. Herbs have more concentrated flavor if they are grown without a lot of fertilizer. Adjust the amount of the fertilizer according to your plant's needs.
4. Use potting soil Use potting soil instead of regular soil from the ground. Potting soil is lighter and well draining. You can buy the potting soil from your local nursery and also ask the gardeners there how much soil each plant needs. DR Tip: If the soil falls out of the draining holes, you can cover them with pieces of small coffee filters.
5. Add herbs Most herbs are very easy to grow. You can either buy your favorite seedlings from a nursery or buy planting seeds from local supermarkets. Buy seedlings from Tamimi and Lulu Supermarkets.
6. Try a little sunshine You have to be careful about this bit. Do your research and learn whether your plant likes sun or shade. Vegetables and herbs require a little healthy dose of sunshine. 7. Monitor plants It takes the plants a while to grow, so you need to have a bit of patience. Expect the plants to adjust during the first few weeks. Water them when the soil feels dry to the depth of one inch. Since the humidity level is low in Riyadh, make sure you mist the air around plants once a week to boost the humidity level. THE RITZ-CARLTON, RIYADH Experience the art of coffee here. Coffee roasting is an art known only to coffee lovers. It’s the basis for distinctive flavor, allowing beans to become coffee ready for use. The Ladies and Gentlemen at the Ritz-Carlton, Riyadh have been trained by famous and renowned coffee makers from around the world. They have become masters in successfully and creatively achieving the precise stages of coffee selection, roasting, grinding, and preparation.
COFFEE ROASTED
Once you enter the hotel lobby, the aroma of Arabic coffee intertwines with the scent of rare oriental incense to offer an authentic Arabian experience. The coffee, which remains a symbol of generosity and hospitality among Arabs in general and Saudis in particular, is prepared in its original way. It begins with choosing the finest types of mountain coffee beans, delicately purified and roasted before grains of cardamom and finely selected saffron extracts are added.

When you’ve been craving a waffle from A7LA.KEEF all day at work, having to hunt for your favorite food truck with vague descriptions like “between the car park and the sport center next to the 3rd palm tree” is not ideal. But there’s a solution causing a lot of buzz: what3words is an innovative addressing system that has divided the world into 3m x 3m squares. Each square has a unique address made of three dictionary words.

HAIRSTYLIST GEORGES EL MENDELEK’S KEY TIPS FOR HEALTHY AND RADIANT HAIR: Home hair care is more important than salon care. — Georges El Mendelek
What’s your favorite TRESemmé product?
I love TRESemmé Heat Defense Spray as it protects hair from damage caused by heat styling and UV rays.
How can we continue caring for our hair after treatments like Keratin?
Consider washing your hair less often (no more than three times weekly), and switch to sulfate-free products. I recommend TRESemmé Botanix Nourish & Replenish Shampoo and Conditioner. For dark hair dyed blonde, TRESemmé Platinum Strength Shampoo helps revive hair with only eight (continuous) washes.
Accentuate your natural beauty with TRESemmé. Thousands of ladies in Saudi joined the TRESmakeover contest, which took place in Dubai in October, via their live footage on social media. What should we look out for when buying hair care products?
FASHION STYLIST ALANOUD BADR ANSWERED THE WINNING QUESTIONS. As a woman who wears the hijab, what can I do with my clothes to look slimmer?
What are the fundamental pieces for winter?
Play with color. Whatever you’re wearing, if its colors are dark on the side and light on the front, it gives a camouflage effect that makes you look slimmer. You can also wear a long blazer topped with a belt on the upper waist. If you’re wearing pants, choose ones that are loose with a straight cut.
Checkered patterns are amazing. Also, training pants with a thin line on the side are a favorite. Another preference are velvet pants and pants with sequins, as they can be worn from day to night, and also embellishment on jeans, like pearls and crystals.
Don’t be afraid of trends and colors. All body types can wear whatever they want. — Alanoud Badr
• Acne can be a big obstacle to confidence. Instead of hiding it with make-up, treat it with the help of a professional.
WITH HER TIPS, MAKE-UP ARTIST SARAH WADA'ANI, CHALLENGED BELIEFS ON MAKE-UP TRENDS.
• It’s vital to keep skin moisturized, especially under the eyes. Women who care for their skin go for the “no makeup” look, as they don’t feel the urge to hide flaws.
There are so many things that make us prettier but they don’t make us “us.” I can do a nose job and look prettier but it won’t be me. — Sarah Wada’ani
• General rules about make-up need not be applied. Rather, it’s more important to find personal rules that suit and express a woman’s personality and traits. For example, eyebrows should be left in their natural look, whether they’re thick or thin, long or short, even if peers don’t like it. ABAYAS FOR THE ACTIVE YOU Don’t let them get in the way of your activities! By Safa Hassan and Duha Al Hosainy

Vinyl Mode’s Solitude A new album in collaboration with Sarah Taibah By Nadia Sakkal
Jeddah-based electronic music band Vinyl Mode is releasing their new album, Solitude. A collaboration with young artist and singer Sarah Taibah, it tells the story of a woman who isolates herself from the noise of the world to reflect on her circumstances. Alone in a big city, the heroine subconsciously reminisces over the past and ruminates on the hopelessness of the present. 58 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2017
We talked to Vinyl Mode’s DJs and music producers Moe Nassar and Harris Mavromatis, and Taibah, to learn more about the album.
What were the album’s beginnings?
Sarah Taibah: The songs were originally poems I wrote as part of my healing process by writing out a hurricane of emotions and feelings; I didn’t intend to share them,
much less include them in a music album! I was sharing my poetry with a friend who suggested I take my words to another level, and she arranged a meeting with Vinyl Mode. In 2 hours, we had a first draft for a song based on my first poem, Rubbama, which I read on a voice note and sent over to them. Less than a week later, we had the track, and I couldn’t believe it was me!

instruments in sound production – I’d like to give a shout out to the talented bass guitarist Ataa Alahadab who did a great job with the songs Contradiction and Another Lifetime.
What do you hope to achieve with this album?
Harris Mavromatis: If people understand what we’re trying to communicate, that’s the biggest achievement. I want our music to mean something to our listeners. I hope it talks to them; people usually communicate feelings, emotions and thoughts through different platforms, and music is our platform.
What future projects are you preparing?
Where did you record the album?
Harris Mavromatis: We have a studio at home, which contains all the necessary equipment. That’s where we do most of our work. Since this is this first time we record vocals, we didn’t have the equipment so we collaborated with Libra Studios in Jeddah.
What makes this album different than your previous ones?

doing that. We reversed it, using Arabic words that were read out as in a monologue instead of sung. This album speaks of the hidden talent we have here in Saudi. Many “bedroom DJs” are producing great music at home but don’t know where to go with it. This album says: if we can be great producers, so can you. And if you’re reading this, please reach out to us.

BOOKS
The Broken Earth Series
The Southern Reach Trilogy
With authentic characters dealing with cataclysmic issues that’ll baffle you and simple ones that you’ll feel right in your gut, this powerful story told by N. K. Jemisin implants you within a complex world that merges the realms of science fiction and fantasy in refreshing and thought-provoking ways.
Get your weird on with Jeff VanderMeer’s trippy tale of scientists exploring a mysterious and otherworldly wilderness, Area X. Set firmly as sci-fi horror, it is Lovecraftian without the focus on eternal gods and insanity. You’ll consume these books and be consumed by them in return.
TV SHOWS Star Trek Discovery Forgive the cheesiness, but this show boldly goes where no other Star Trek show has gone before. Set a decade before the original Kirk-captained series, not only is the main protagonist a non-captain, she's also flawed in compelling ways. The story is far from the utopian ways of its predecessors and is told in an arc format (which is a major shift from the episodic nature of the others).

LA BELLE VIE Cheese and that provincial life By Noura Al Joaib
France instantly conjures images of high fashion, romance, Parisian lights, baked goods, art, and la belle vie – the good life, the overarching theme the French have always aspired towards. Last month, I was taken on a journey by experts of the cream industry Cream of Europe, to explore firsthand that good life. My trip began in Lyon. Lyon is considered by many to be the gastronomy capital of the world, having produced chefs that revolutionized not just French cooking, but the whole experience of enjoying a meal. At first glance, Lyon is a typical city surrounded by rolling green hills dotted with small 68 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2017

villages and farmhouses. In fact, Lyon is the center of a beautiful and interconnected ecosystem of towns, farms, and, most importantly, people whose varied passions come together in a perfect symphony of life.
Cheese Cave at Fromagerie Janin
is complex to make – the aging process alone requires dedication and attention and can last up to 36 months.
A dining experience at the L’Auberge Ancienne (The Old Inn), a three-star Michelin restaurant situated in the tiny town of Vonnas, an hour south of Lyon, means an authentic family meal – red-and-white cloth cover the tables, preserved art line the walls, and classic French dishes are served.
We visit many family-run cheese businesses on this trip, one of them in the AuvergneRhône-Alpes – the Fromagerie Janin in Champagnole. Here, Comté is worked on by an affineur – a person who ages cheese – who, instead of just storing cheese, ripens it to bring it to its peak texture, flavor, and aroma. The Janins age their cheese in an underground cave beneath their shop.
Of course, no French table is complete without a plateau à fromage – the French and their cheese are inseparable. Take Comté, a cheese that
Deep in the Jura Mountains, near the Swiss border, is Fort des Rousses, home to JureFlore owned by legendary affineur Monsieur Jean-Charles Arnaud. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 69
“You have to use all your senses to examine the readiness of the cheese. Only after inspection from 5 cheese masters do we determine whether the cheese has aged to perfection.” Now, Comté, like all cheese, is made from milk. Both Monsieur Arnaud and Mathieu Janin stressed the importance of the milk used and the role it plays in the taste of the cheese. Ferme du Beau Pré in Champagnole is where the Janins get their milk. This organic farm, situated on 100 hectares of land and home to 45 cows is run by Dominique Faivre. This milk is collected exclusively by the local Comté makers. The cows’ diet and daily nutrients are taken care of religiously. “It all comes out in the cheese. It all starts with the pastures, the cereals the cows consume,” says Faivre.
Jean-Charles Arnaud
A former military fort built under Emperor Napoleon’s reign, today it hosts 140,000 wheels of Comté cheese, kept in variations of caves. JureFlore is known for its Morbier and Mont d’Or, but its crown jewel is none other than Comté.
Mathieu Janin 70 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2017
Cheese aging is a specialty all on its own, and Monsieur Arnaud is the affinage king. Each cave does something different, with variances in humidity and temperature. “It’s alive, this cheese. It’s a living organism and responds to the environment it is kept in,” Monsieur Arnaud explains.
A trip to charming Annecy, specifically a visit to Fromagerie Gay, introduced us to owner and cheesemonger Pierre Gay, who specializes in selling cheese, butter, and other dairy products. He, too, ages his cheese in a small underground cave with a glass ceiling for people to peek through. What’s spectacular about Pierre is his unbridled love for cheese. “You have to love what you do. What’s the point of doing anything if it isn’t for love?” It’s one thing to have such love and passion passed down across generations, and to see a heritage respected and carried on. It’s quite another to see someone stepping up and into the world of cheese,

Our Country Calls On Us Exploring 13 regions of the Kingdom
On National Day weekend, students and staff of Jeddah College of Advertising (JCA) turned the patriotic occasion into an exploration of Saudi Arabia’s major regions with their travel campaign Our Country Calls On Us. Salwa Bankhar, Head of Industry Relations, explained, “Traveling helps in selfdevelopment, and we as a society tend to lean towards exploring other countries. With this initiative, we are bringing self-development to our local grounds. The youth play a big part in the country’s development, and in order to develop it they need to grasp its beauty.” 72 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2017
Dr. Haneen Mohammed Shoaib, Dean of JCA, explained the campaign’s inspiration, “The initiative comes from the vision of the Chair of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Abdullah Sadeq Dahlan, to contribute in promoting internal tourism as a national duty. Through this, the university expresses its loyalty and belonging to Saudi Arabia and its leadership. We hope this campaign becomes the catalyst of many creative campaigns to celebrate the wonderful Kingdom.” Our Country Calls On Us was able to deeply influence the youth’s sense of patriotism and their pride in their nation.
13 groups of 8 students, staff and faculty, set off to explore and document the major sites in 13 regions of the Kingdom – Jeddah, Makkah, Madina, Riyadh, Dammam, Hail, Tabuk, Al Jouf, Arar, Jizan, Abha, Baha and Al Qasim.

During their trip, the students documented their experience on social media and on STC’s website, Unveil Saudi. Dr. Shoaib says, “All of them felt a sense of duty to bring out the best of the region they were visiting. That mission made them put all their efforts into completing their tasks in the best way possible.”
in such an experience will definitely encourage others to follow the JCA youth’s footsteps in discovering Saudi Arabia’s true beauty.”
The overall aim of the travel campaign is to engage students to explore their country and share their experience with the public. Creative Design Lecturer Sarah Zuhairy comments, “The show of excitement and adventure
Perhaps the shining jewel of this campaign is that it was initiated by students at the JCA in an attempt to create a concept that would reflect their pride in their country. What a way to celebrate the Saudi National Day!
Our Country Calls On Us hopes to change people’s perception and attitude about tourism in Saudi Arabia, starting with the locals.
Look out for future issues of the magazine for insightful coverage from each of the regions visited by JCA students and staff!

AN ISLAND OFF The Umluj Coast Part of the mega Red Sea tourism project. By Mohammed Mirza
When the Red Sea tourism project was announced, it made headlines across the globe. This isn’t a surprise as it is one of the most ambitious tourism projects in this part of the world, and it has been a long time coming.
With all the hype surrounding the project, we decided to pay a visit to these islands and get a first-hand experience of what they are like. After checking into our hotel at Umluj, we noticed a small poster that read “island tours.” 74 DESTINATION RIYADH NOVEMBER 2017
The following morning, we called the phone number. The man who answered asked us to come to the seaport. It took us some time to find the location, as he kept explaining the route as if we were locals who knew the nooks and crannies
of the city like the backs of our hands. Nevertheless, we eventually manage to find the seaport. There were no ships or ferries in sight here, just really small motor boats, most of which were probably used for fishing.
STAFF PHOTO / MOHAMMED MIRZA
The plan is to turn a string of islands between Umluj and Al Wajh into a global tourism destination. It will cover 50 islands, spanning an area of 34,000 square kilometers.
on the horizon. The islands were beautiful, the turquoise waters surrounding them just added to their natural and pristine beauty. It was like a tropical island sans a thick grove of trees. Our boat couldn’t reach the island’s shore as the water was too shallow and, on top of that, we had reached during the period of the low tide. Nonetheless, we anchored next to one of the islands and began exploring while taking mindless photos for our social media feeds. We couldn’t swim in the shallow waters, so we tried fishing. The waters were abundant with marine life; we would just throw the bait and within a minute or two would catch a fish.
away. With seasickness starting to catch up on us, we decided to return back. Although we visited just two of the 50 islands that are part of the project, we got an understanding of what these islands have to offer. The promise of a tropical gateway in the Middle East that offers coral reefs, warm weather year-round, pristine waters, virgin beaches and plentiful opportunities for islandhopping is be all too alluring.. Saudi Arabia sits at what can be called the crossroads of the East and the West, so for visitors from most parts of the world, long flights will not be required to reach here. Hopefully, the project’s plans will make it a coveted holiday destination for all.
COURTESY PHOTO / ABEER BAJANDOUH
We finally meet the man on the phone who was to be our makeshift tour guide. But before we could sit in his charming boat that even featured a mini majlis seating arrangement, we had to submit our resident permits to the port authorities. They handed over a slip to us, which we had to return once we were back from our journey to get back our IDs. We stepped into the boat, wore our life jackets and off we went, passing the barrier of the light colored shallow waters towards the deeper and darker waters. The boat rode fast, bumping off waves while its motor made the sound of a jet propeller. As we went deeper into the Red Sea, we saw two islands
We moved around a bit in our hunt for schools of fish and we managed to find quite a few of them, but we’d already caught more than we could in our wildest imaginations. Our guide informed us that there were islands further up ahead, but they were a good 30 minutes
If you visit the area now, don’t expect much aside from isolated islands. Once the tourism infrastructure is in place, these islands will top the lists of travel hotspots in the Middle East. COORDINATES 25.203586, 37.222347
