Abu Hamdan:
UNCONVENTIONAL PATHS TO SUCCESS
ISSUE 59 JANUARY 2018
FROM THE EDITOR
Editor-in-Chief Enas Hashani Managing Director Maria Mahdaly Executive Editor Bassma Al Toaimi
LET’S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS... How do you define success? Is it rising up the corporate ladder and getting that executive parking spot? Is it earning enough for yourself and your family? Is it owning a blue chip company or having a brand everybody loves? Traditionally, we’ve looked up to people who are industry admirals, corporate leaders and visionaries who’ve made it. But we are entering a paradigm that re-evaluates how we measure wins in the business landscape. New Riyadh and its people have shown us that success isn’t just about who’s making the most money at the end of the year. It’s also who’s creating impact, pursuing one’s passion, and thriving, it’s the entrepreneurial spirit putting up a good fight, and taking unconventional paths to determine the future we see for ourselves. And so, for this business issue, we celebrate the people whose idea, big or small, is helping build the Riyadh of the future. We jumpstart things with social media genius, Abu Hamdan, whose path to success is by being extraordinarily average. We look at Riyadhis who are setting up the building blocks for sectors that are just beginning.

BUSINESS
We’ve been busy shaking up the business landscape lately, doing whatever it takes to realize Vision 2030. We’re walking – even running – into a new era, where technology and a knowledge-based and creative economy are in the spotlight.
Supporting our SMEs and Startups
The Saudi government has been supporting and investing in SMEs and startups across the country. The SME General Authority’s BIBAN interactive conference held in September last year looked at the importance of innovation and creativity in entrepreneurship and encouraged a nurturing environment and technical infrastructure to support competitiveness among the country’s SMEs.

The SME sector represents 99.2% of businesses in Saudi Arabia, contributing 20% to the GDP, despite some challenges that they face – lack of knowledge about government systems, weak communication among stakeholders, among others. More than just pushing forward buzz words in the business arena, these recent initiatives backed by the government aim to help SMEs overcome these obstacles, and, importantly, understand the local market’s needs and the opportunities available to them.
Bill Gates’ pledge through his foundation, to support Saudi initiatives
Things are definitely changing at a rapid pace in Saudi Arabia as it focuses on these smaller businesses and revives that age-old entrepreneurial spirit. As our economy continues to go through these changes, our growing pains can only help us become stronger and better than ever before.

If Abu Hamdan were a ghost he would chase… Chndy.
Last show he watched:
The Office and One Piece.
Favorite smell?
Bokhour (Incense).
How free time is spent by Abu Hamdan:
As a kid, his mom used to put on Egyptian-dubbed Disney movies and Kuwaiti plays to entertain him while she was away. His free time has been spent the same since then.
If you can be anyone in the world for one day, who would you be? Andy from Toy Story.
Abu Hamdan’s idol:
Saud, his brother, who leads a free-spirited life, who inspires him and makes him laugh.
If you had 3 wishes, what would they be? •A farm with animals •A cook •An airplane
Saudi’s funniest Mohammed, 24-year-old Mohammed “Abu Hamdan” Al Hamdan, has been all over social media for the past two years, starting from zero to hero minus the ego. The reason behind his 3.5 million followers is because he is so average it’s extraordinary (he’s also hilarious, have we mentioned that?). To really know Abu Hamdan, we need to go 4 years back. After moving jobs from a bookstore to McDonald’s, he set a goal for himself. He wanted to be promoted as a fast food chain manager, so he can wear the cap with the big yellow “M.” Even though he spent a whole week facing fries, he got promoted within three months. A year later, he was forced to change jobs again to fit his college hours, so he went to apply at another restaurant wearing his CV – his McDonald’s manager clothes (take note: how to dress up for an interview). After bouncing around through different restaurants, he found himself working in a real estate company. He lived in a farm, woke up early, ate breakfast, watched the news, and had the same day on repeat, like a retiree but at the age of 22. He got a call from a production company where he first worked as a video editor, then transitioned into acting and even went the extra mile to direct and style his own photoshoots that trended all over tumblr (it was epic!). 18 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2018
This is when the persona of “Abu Hamdan” started going public. Inspired to be the whole package, Abu Hamdan always implements ideas that have never been done before, like the music video parody he recently released, Awafi, featuring him (and his humor), which got over 25 million views online. Stirring social media even more, Mohammed did a Louis Vuitton fashion shoot with his two friends, Chndy and Cheb Moha, which turned out to be his favorite project so far. Fresh out of the box, Abu Hamdan is releasing an app called Hemoji keyboard, an Arabic app where people can send GIFs of Abu Hamdan (watch out for Abu Hamdan’s face all over your timeline and message feed). So if you ask Mohammed what his job is? It’s doing what he loves, singing, dancing, collecting vintage pieces… and sometimes even drawing! And so our story of Mohammed Al Hamdan stops here, but he did not leave without telling us how to live the Abu Hamdan way. “Put your ego aside, be neutral, be humble and live your life simply.” warchieff DESTINATIONKSA.COM 19
S P E C I A L F E AT U R E
A city of grit and hustle. There is no denying that Saudi Arabia has changed drastically in recent months. The past two years have ushered in progress, as the country attempts to loosen its dependency on oil and diversify the economy.
Indeed, mega projects like NEOM, the entertainment city, or what is being anticipated as the largest IPO in history, courtesy of ARAMCO, are on the horizon. While we’re enthused with what these major developments can bring, the government recognizes
that simultaneously, economic progress can really be achieved through the involvement and success of startups, SMEs, and innovators. In fact, one of the major benefactors of the SR 72B stimulus package allotted for the private sector are for these quickly rising players in the market. And so we turn to the homegrown enterprises, lifestyle startups, who are braving the new frontier. These Riyadhis are a sampling of the minds who are redefining what meaning business, means in the city:
Nelly Attar was a clinical psychologist by profession, she left a full time job at a social enterprise to open up a dance and boot camp studio, the first of its kind in Riyadh. Despite being a trainer and an active member in the health and fitness community, it was a still a leap for her to join the ranks of entrepreneurs in an industry that is relatively new. “Everyday, I learn something new, I even had to relearn things I thought I knew. The operational side of things can be daunting but without it, what you have is a dream not a business.” 20 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2018
Bader Assery, Alhanouf Alrassan, and Abdullah Almhqani are the passiondriven, enthusiastic, and young university students who created Chillville. “We came up with the idea of a clothing line in my club house at 3 a.m.” Badr laughs as he recalls the memory. Alhanouf highlighted their outfits as, “an everyday, casual, streetwear OOTD.” “I feel great when I see a man wearing our pink cap. They’re breaking stereotypes,” Abdullah says. These friends want to motivate the Saudi youth to follow their heart and inspire them to start their own start-ups.
Waad Aljuaid, Ghadah AlMoqbel, Hawazin Al-Saif, Sarah Al-Arifi, Athir Al-Ariefy and Najla Al-Ariefy, a group of six ladies, who also happen to be university students, came up with an innovative entertainment solution: Elixir. Keeping in mind Saudi Vision 2030, they aimed to create games that inspire, educate, and entertain, via Elixir. They created high-energy, immersive & interactive games for people stay fit and active, while at the same time developing their team-work skills.

Tourism will be one of the biggest sectors in Saudi Arabia, and at the heart of it are the service providers and operators. Founded by Abdulrahman AlShaya, Horizon Tours had the foresight to apply for the SCTH license ahead of everyone else, and now they’re one of the first to be accredited by the ministry. Abdulrahman is an example of what happens when you find what you love and pursue it. He left a lucrative career as a hotelier, took a job as paralegal, so he can focus on building a company based on his passions: the desert and exploration. His love for what he does shows in the experience he provides, and he puts the knowledge he has amassed about the past to good use.

Jammin’ in the Name of Love Exclusive sit-down with local band Mizan By Dalia Darweesh
What happens when talent, passion, and harmony (pun intended) collide? We got to find out when we had a sitdown with Sharqiya’s vibrant and up-to-the-minute band,
Mizan. Mizan, Arabic for scale, is inspired by wazin, the balance, structure, and rhythm of a song. “It also means a lot to us, as we try to make that balance in our lives,” they said.

us their story and, of course, their love for music. It’s all about how you feel when you listen to their music. “We like to make people forget about their worries. We want them to enjoy the moment, at least for a couple of minutes.” Mizan officially started as a band in November 2017, but the members have a long history of music. From weekend jam sessions to creating their own music, the idea of starting a band came
naturally to them. Mizan plays a fusion of different genres, from progressive rock, to jazz, blues, and funk. This is a contributing factor caused by the diverse range of music the band listens to. Some of their favorite artists include Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, and The Aristocrats.
Whatever you’re in the mood for, you will find something that will automatically make you enjoy the music. “We want to make music that really allows a person to feel the rhythm and dance to it, but we also want it to affect them on a deeper level. Make them feel something they haven’t felt in a while.” “Our music-making process is organized chaos,” they said jokingly. What’s beautiful about it is that it begins with a feeling. They use their emotions, from anger to sadness or happiness, and in return, they express their feelings through playing an instrument. Starting from one person with a drum beat followed by the guitar, the music takes a life of its own. “Because we’ve been playing together for so long, we’ve built this chemistry that makes us in sync. We become completely lost in the process, and the music drives us.” Live music performances are relatively new and uncommon in the Kingdom, especially in Sharqiya. Still, cultural boundaries exist in the region, such as public acceptance and awareness of the music industry. Mizan says that the music scene in Sharqiya has always been underground. “We have some great musicians in the area, but they don’t get exposure.” With all the events, festivals, and exhibitions held throughout Sharqiya, we are noticing the rise of musicians performing publicly. However, it’s still a grey area on
whether performing publicly is officially allowed or not – another challenge Mizan is facing. “We’re kind of still in limbo and it’s all happening so fast, so we jumped into the river with everyone else.”
the near future. “We don’t want our music to be superficial, we want it to have a lasting impact on the person listening.”
Mizan expressed their enthusiasm about this emerging change in Sharqiya. “There’s nothing that can really stop us,” they tell us.
Another ultimate direction for the band is starting their first Saudi record label for jazz and blues – having an official recording studio, creating a platform for musicians to produce songs, and also interacting with other artists.
Mizan also shared with us their plans on making an album in

ARTIST’S CORNER
NOUF FARHOUD
and the Fifty Shades of Feelings In conversation with our emerging artist of the month. By Reema Al Humaid
What do you do other than art?
When I’m not in my art corner I like to read books, preferably horror or mystery, and I also love helping out my friends with their projects.
You say you don’t do specific art.
I don’t confine myself to a certain style of art; most of my work revolves around the methods of expressionism, abstract and digital art. I do plan on experimenting with different methods in the future.

I’ve always wanted to “leave a mark” and now that I know how to, I won’t leave a canvas blank.
I believe that bright colors attract attention and show confidence. Most of these paintings are based on stressful or sorrowful moments contradictory to the vivid colors, and I really like the idea of throwing people off and having them question my methods. This, however, wasn’t planned. It just happened based on instinct.
COURTESY PHOTO • NAWWAF AL FARRAJ
Why do you like using bright colors?
Are there stories behind your pieces?
Yes, I share my stories in a more creative way – through my paintings. Most of my work is based on stories or people I’ve met. For instance, in this painting, one of my more recent ones, I tried to express the anxiety I faced recently; using bright colors helps me relieve some of the stress and look at the issue with a more optimistic approach.
Which of your pieces is your favorite? Why?
My favorite painting is a selfportrait that can be viewed in many different ways. It’s almost like the “half empty or half full glass” – I am either the ship, stable yet completely out of balance, or I rise above like the sun and moon. This was my first painting using the expressionism style, so I guess this is where it all began.
Artists play an important part in the society-- they can lead, uplift or provoke with their art they also add emotions and color to their community.
If you’ve just started, be different, don’t force it. Join as many art events and galleries as possible, be confident in yourself and your work, and socialize, socialize, socialize! — Nouf Farhoud
What work of art do you wish you owned?
Any canvas of George Condo’s would be a dream come true.
What projects have you been up to recently?
I’ve been trying to have more people notice my art and the only way to do that is by participating in different events and projects. Three of my art works were showcased at the art is generosity2 event in PSU, and a project I found very interesting is the levels project where artists with different art styles get together to paint a parking lot in Riyadh. art.by.nouf DESTINATIONKSA.COM 29

Horizon Tours
Abdulrahman AlShaya started Horizon Tours because of his love for the desert. It is one of the first touring services to be licensed by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Heritage this year. They offer central region tours but also cater to other parts of Saudi Arabia, like Shuwaimis and the empty quarter.

inspiring petroglyphs and went to a secret valley that felt like an open museum. The Horizon crew is amazing when it comes to giving you a full and authentic historical, cultural, and entertaining experience. Expect to learn about pre-Islamic folklore, listen to legends around the bonfire, feast on authentic Kabsa, and enjoy the desert like a true Bedouin.

COMIC CON ARABIA 2017 Superheroes and Geeks Unite! Comic Con Arabia lured cosplayers and fandoms from all over Saudi to Riyadh. The geekiest event of 2017 introduced us to several subcultures in the city and proves that when it comes to pop culture, we aren’t just keeping up, we’re setting the pace.
OUR FAVORITE HIGHLIGHTS:
• Fans went gaga over Jason Momoa. He is mostly known for his role as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones and the title role in the recently released movie Aquaman. While his poses at Comic Con had us smiling, it’s really his trip to Thumama and effort to try authentic kabsa that won us over.

THE WRITTEN WORD
POETRY FOR LIFE Sara Abuljadayel talks about her poetry and writing process NAME: Sara Abuljadayel AGE: 36 PROFESSION: Project
Sara Abuljadayel is a Saudi poet who recently did a booksigning event at the Sharjah Book Fair, the world’s third largest book fair, where she met some of her readers. Her poetry and prose collection, Just Wondering About It All, contains earnest writing that offers a comforting and uplifting perspective on life. 38 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2018
When writing her first collection Abuljadayel knew she’d have to find a balance between her full-time job and creative writing, “I would go to the office early so I could get time to write. On less hectic days, I’d take a coffee break to write down some lines.” The trick that worked for her was to find a few minutes a day when
she could clear her head and write without interruptions. Being in a corporate environment doesn’t seem very inspiring for a poet, she explains, “Everything inspires me, whether it’s positive or negative. I believe you need to have an open mind to look around you and find what makes the world spin.”

will end it.” Another poem, “The World’s New Symphony”, puts across an inspiring message, “The world’s new symphony is a reminder to have a heart, to share compassion, to make a difference.” When it comes to reading and writing poetry, Abuljadayel talks about a shift in perspective, “I have to put myself in the reader’s shoes and see how they might relate to my poems.” Speaking to her Saudi and international readers has revealed a common response, “They relate to the journey you take from one phase of life to the next. They are also able to see themselves in some of the situations I write about.”
Just Wondering About It All is available on most ebook platforms. A hard copy can be bought from Jamalon for SR 60.

Writing in English, the language of her education, allows her to reach a wider and more international audience. Abuljadayel’s writing process usually begins with a word or situation that keeps coming back to her, “I like writing about life instances and situations, and how they affect people, how people can learn
from them to carry on in life.” While that might give you the impression of a self-help book, her poetry is actually an expressive exploration of life. For instance, the poem “The Strange Void” ends with an encouraging declaration, “However long it takes, everything has an end. Your part in it is to choose how you
Getting published is, of course, not a simple matter; Abuljadayel was used to writing for her family and close friends, but knowing that a larger audience would read her work concerned her, “My friends and family would give me direct feedback. When people around the world read my work, I’m not sure what they think or if their response is similar to my closer circle’s.” We couldn’t help but ask about her current read, “I’m reading Emirati writer Aysha Al Jahani’s book on parenting, The First Years Last Forever.” Sara Abuljadayel also enjoys the works of novelist Paulo Coelho, photographer Paul Reiffer, and artist Christian Lassen. saranabuljadayel

Radio: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow The evolution of radio in Saudi Arabia By Nadia Sakkal
Radio growth is at 35% every year in listenership and in ad revenue. And we have consistent growth from the day we launched to today. — Rasha Al Emam Alf Alf
Before TV, radio gathered our grandparents and their families, who were eager to listen to the king’s speech or Um Kalthoum’s latest song. Since then, the way we consume media on a daily basis has considerably changed.
United by Distance
While there is a variety of media available to us today, radio remains among the world’s favorites. In fact, people still like to engage in conversations and share their opinions with other listeners. Rasha Al Emam, Alif Alif FM’s Executive Director and a key player in the foundation of radio in Saudi Arabia, iterates that radio hosts ask questions relevant to anyone sitting at home or in their car. Listeners call back, share a good laugh, and want to listen to the same program by the same presenter the day after. “You feel the whole country is with you on the line,” says Al Emam.
Online Radio
Everything is online now, including radio. Podcasting, a relatively new phenomenon gaining popularity in the Middle East, is when a radio show is uploaded to a platform on the internet, allowing followers to download episodes and listen at their time and place of convenience. Alf Alif FM upload all their content online. To gain a better understanding of why there

is such high demand for podcasts, Mstdfr Podcasting Network host and producer, Khayra Bundakji explains that we live in the gig economy, where people are more likely to have temporary, flexible jobs – e.g. freelancing or contract based – and therefore flexible, less “normal” schedules. Whereas in the past we gathered at particular times to follow a show from start to end, it’s not as common anymore. This makes a personal solution with minimal distraction so important, thus the podcast.

Radio Will Always Connect People
When asked where she thinks traditional radio is heading in the near future, Bundakji says, ‘There’s going to be overlap. I don’t think radio can die,’ as it is the first mass communication medium that made its way into people’s homes, giving it sentimental value. Your Guide to a Healthy Year By Nelly Attar
I’m recovering from a horrible flu as I write this, ironic as that may sound. Health is not just a physical state, it’s also mental, social, and environmental. To be healthy, you need to maintain a decent balance between these four interdependent factors. For example, you might sleep well and have an excellent 58 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2018
training session in the morning (good physical health factors), but arguing with a family member (social and mental health factor) a few hours later may taint your whole day and weigh you down emotionally and physically. Here are some tips for improving your health levels this 2018:
Walkways: Diplomatic Quarter, Prince Sultan University Hiking: Edge of the World, red sands, camel trails
• Sleep at least 8 hours a day – it replenishes our physical and cognitive functions. Without enough sleep, our mood, memory, comprehension levels, strength, and overall functioning will take a pretty bad hit. • Eat natural and nonrefined food whenever possible. As a rule of thumb, try to consume mainly plantbased and organic/GMO-free food. Avoid sugar at least 80% of the time. DR FAVORITES: Biotic, Urth Café, Circle Café, Bateel
• Hydrate! Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink water – drink #alldayeryday.
MENTAL HEALTH • Meditate regularly. That can take many forms depending on how meditation works for you – yoga, breathing exercises, and so on. • Make leisure time a priority. Invest in a hobby or passion. • Manage your time by setting weekly and daily goals/priorities. • Learn to say NO and refrain from overextending yourself. • Make Work/Life balance a priority. Too much work isn't healthy, too much play isn't healthy either. • Engage in work that is meaningful to you. You wouldn’t want to be spending 40+ hours a week doing something you dread doing. • Seek professional help when your mental health seems to be at risk. Remember, it’s as important as physical health.

SOCIAL HEALTH •Regular face-to-face interaction is essential; online communication can never replace its benefits. •Maintain a decent network of acquaintances, friends, and close friends. •Be a joiner! It’s definitely a great way to meet like-minded individuals. •Spend quality time with the people you love (family and friends). Cast your mobile aside during those times!
•Volunteer to help others (at schools, mosques, charitable organizations, and so on).
OPPORTUNITIES AT: Takafuf
• Care for a pet (yup, pets are social beings too). Love and care for your animal companions; spending quality time with them can be very rewarding and therapeutic.

Given how much time we spend at home and at the office, yes that can make a huge difference for your wellbeing. • Cut the clutter. Visual noise increases stress. • Delight your senses. Add colors, photos, objects, sounds, and artwork to your home and work environments. • Enhance the light. Daylight is associated with better mood, lower fatigue, enhanced morale, and reduced eyestrain. • Reduce your waste and ecological footprint. Resort to recycling whenever possible, and aim to live with a minimalist approach (less usage and less overall wastage). Remember, less is more. • Maintain good overall hygiene not just at home, but wherever you go. Always keep yourself and your environment neat and clean! All these aspects are interlinked and interdependent – not one can replace the other, and each factor affects the other. I hope these tips have given you some ideas on improving your lifestyle, and I wish you all great health for the new year! DESTINATIONKSA.COM 61

PRODUCTIVITY SECRETS Fact: This article was conceived while pulling off a sun warrior pose, during work hours, in the middle of our office. NAPPING IS A GOOD WAY TO GET THINGS DONE. Post-lunch dips are real. It takes more time and effort trying to stay awake than it does to just take a nap already. Proven fact: naps give employees an energy boost in the middle of the day and maintain their mental edge. At our office, we have a couch equipped with throws and comfy pillows. Instead of sneaking around, our staff tells us if they need a 15-minute power nap and they wake up refreshed to give their 100% again.
HAVE A FRUIT BASKET Oranges, apples, grapes and bananas are part of our pantry list. It gives our team an energy source, plus, considering how eating is part of our jobs, it staves off the weight gain (ideally). Providing snacks for your team is a positive reinforcement and they will really appreciate the incentive. And from experience, fruit baskets are both healthy and cost-effective compared to all that junk food that sometimes gets passed around. 62 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2018
Fresh fruits can be delivered to your office weekly through the Danube App.
WORK OUT AT WORK. We’ve all heard it before – exercising in the office is good for you. Realistically, if you haven’t developed the habit yet, busting out of your chair to do burpees isn’t going to happen. To enable our team to get physical, we have yoga mats and they let out their stress with a punching bag in the common room.
DON’T GLUE YOUR TEAM TO THEIR DESKS. Ambient noise is proven to help people focus and deviating from routine ups creativity. Case in point: when our team feels stuck, we send them out to work remotely. As a team, we shake things up by hosting one in a café. Our favorite out of office workplaces: Draft Café, Gloria Jeans Coffee, King Fahd Library
WHY HELLO, FURRY FRIENDS! An office pet increases the positive vibe in the office and are great for hugs. We have fostered cats and bring in our pets on some days. This serves as a nice ice-breaker and shared responsibility brings the team together. In case of allergies, too bad! But you can still get a fish or a plant. You can foster or adopt from @open_paws
Lastly, subtly leave this issue on your boss’ desk, coincidentally opened to this spread. You’re welcome.

PREVENT FOOTBALL INJURIES Even CR7 Gets Injured! By Nadia Sakkal
We like to watch football, and play it ourselves or as our favorite player’s avatar. We might take this competitive sport quite seriously, but we’re not really experts on preventing injuries and we’re not all privileged with a professional coach to help us do so. Whether you’re a child or a grown-up, here are some tips, and hopefully, you’ll thank us later.
ANKLE INJURY / SPRAIN
HAMSTRING STRAINS
Especially for those who have a sensitive ankle or a history of ankle injuries.
If hamstrings are stretched beyond their limits, the muscle tissue can be torn. This can keep you away from football as long as 3 months.
• Tape or brace the ankle. (Find ankle tapes and braces at Nahdi Pharmacy.) • Wobble-board training assists in regaining balance and poise. (Find one at Sport Ghornatah.)
• Warm up for a minimum of 20 minutes. Start slow and finish at full pace. Not everyone will do it, you should.
• Rehabilitation with a chartered physiotherapist (You can check out PTC Specialists.)
• Wear warm pants to support your hamstrings and repair your muscles. (You can find warm pants at Nahdi Pharmacy.)

HEAD, NECK AND FACE INJURIES
Includes cuts and bruises, fractures, neck sprains and concussions. Note: Not all those who experience a concussion necessarily lose consciousness. • Think twice before you do a strong headkick!
• Keep your eyes wide open and reflexes ready!
KEEP THIS IN MIND New to sports? Remember these! 1. Warm up, warm up, and warm
up some more! Do it for at least 15 minutes and make sure you stretch the muscles you’ll be using most.
2. Don’t go full force from the beginning. Follow the
10% rule: start slow and increase intensity by 10% every week.
3. Do your body a favor and keep it hydrated – this is
especially important in our hot, humid weather. Dehydration can lead to further injuries or make you more vulnerable to illness after your exercise.
4. Invest in proper basic equipment. You’ll need shoes
that are appropriate to the sports you’ll play. The older you get, the better it is to buy sporting guards, like ankle braces.
5. Cooling down after a good
sweat is very important to reduce soreness in muscles. Take 10 minutes for this activity by giving a quick walk or a set of stretches.
KNEE CARTILAGE TEAR (TORN MENISCUS)
Knee injuries can vary from small tears – which may heal with rest – to larger cartilage tears. In this case, there is disruption with joint movement. What you really need are strong knees.
4 warm-ups you can do. • Leg press -no need for a machine – 2 sets of 12 reps • Single-Leg Stance - balance exercise – 2 sets of 60 seconds • Calf Stretch – 3 sets of 20 seconds for each leg • Hamstring Stretch – 2 sets of 20 seconds for each leg
You can never be too cautious. If you have doubts on the seriousness of your injury, check out: Sulaiman Habib Hospital Location: Takhassussi St. Tel: +966-11-2833333 Web: hmg.com

VISIT SALALAH IN OMAN Land of Greenery By Rozina Musthafa
Salalah is the 2nd largest city of Oman, and it’s also a coastal city. Unique climatic factors make it a magical spot and the jewel of the Arabian Sea. On the northern side of it is a mountain range, with greenery, springs, and waterfalls (in Khareef), and on the southern side are pristine white-sand beaches. It’s blessed with a natural park with spectacular views of waterfalls, lakes, mountains, caves, vegetation, and plenty of wildlife.
The Salalah Festival is an yearly tradition that welcomes the cooler months. It lasts from July to September when the temperature drops to 23ºC, while the rest of Oman and the Gulf countries experience considerably hotter climates. Rain also turns Salalah into a completely green area. Omanis prepare some cultural and traditional shows to celebrate this monsoon season and welcome tourists and visitors from all over the world.

Saudi Football The Early Years By Mohammed Mirza
SOURCE PHOTO/AHDAAF
Before football, the main sports of the local population were falconry and horse and camel racing.
The King’s Cup commemorates Saudi Arabia’s most popular sport.
When the oil boom began, workers from many different parts of the world came to the Kingdom; this furthered the popularity of the sport among the masses.
Football, as we know it now, is the most popular sport played in Saudi.
1920
Football was picked up and played on the streets of Makkah, introduced by Indonesian and Malaysian pilgrims.
1927
Sports clubs that would become prominent in the current Saudi football scene came into the fray, including Jeddah-based Al Ittihad Club.
Late 1920s to early 1930s
Full-fledged Arab football teams sprang up in Jeddah and Makkah. Sponsors, usually local businessmen, pitched in and tournaments began.
1939
The sport was introduced in the Eastern Province by Aramco employees, who are believed to have picked it up from British expats living in nearby Bahrain.
1941
Football came to Riyadh when Aramco officials were transferred to the capital.
1950
So many football clubs and tournaments were established that the Ministry of Interior set up the country’s first office for sports affairs. This eventually became the Directorate of Youth Affairs.
1954
The King’s Cup was established; it’s one of the region’s most coveted tournaments. Football became national and clubs and all-star teams began playing with neighboring countries. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 73

THE HOLY QUR’AN An exhibition in Madinah
On a recent trip to Madinah, as we stepped out of Masjid An Nabawi after prayer, we heard a bilingual representative of the mosque announcing a freeentry Qur’an exhibition further ahead. Intrigued, we decided to go take a look. Upon entering, we heard a guide addressing a number of visitors about the Quran and its significance. Most of our fellow visitors were pilgrims from abroad who perhaps were visiting Saudi Arabia for the first time. Our guide went through the exhibition and the visitors, some of them elderly, tried to match his pace as he walked through several halls each covering a different 74 DESTINATION RIYADH JANUARY 2018

another round of spiritual upliftment – another round as it is, as we had just come out of Masjid An Nabawi feeling the peace and serenity that Madinah is famous for.
There were guided tours every few minutes or so as groups upon groups led by guides entered the exhibition. The tours were conducted in a number of languages.
Accompanying the posters were several interactive visual displays, each having its own audio outlets to provide visitors with an audio-visual experience. Seeing that and other state-of-the-art installations in the exhibition, we could see that huge amounts of money, skill, and expertise were invested in setting the place up to make it a top-notch experience. But at the pace in which our guide was leading us, we
There were, nonetheless, some visitors who couldn’t understand the languages that the tours were being conducted in, so they wandered inside the maze-like halls on their own. The posters in each hall were so edifying, it almost felt like

unfortunately barely managed to read the posters, let alone have time to listen to the available audio clips. We reached a hall where they kept one of the largest handwritten manuscripts of the Quran. Weighing over 154 kilograms, it was written by an Afghan, Ghulam Mohiuddin, almost 200 years ago. The manuscript was so intricate and beautiful that we were left in awe. The next hall displayed many age-old manuscripts, some of them dating back to just a few centuries after the hijra. These manuscripts were brought in from all around the Muslim World and were written by some of the most well-known calligraphers of the time.

We stopped in a room with a gigantic screen to watch a short documentary on the Quran. Our next stop was a small souvenir shop with memorabilia themed onthe exhibition. Walking through the exhibition was like going through a book, turning page after page starting from when the Quran was first revealed to how it was compiled and to how organizations today are contributing to its upkeep. Definitely, a good addition to Madinah’s growing list of places to visit. On our exit we passed an exhibition under construction. We found out it might focus on the history of Masjid An Nabawi, so there’s more to look forward to. Location: Coordinates: 24.465873, 39.609205
