FROM THE EDITOR MAN UP! June is here but it looks like it’s going to be a whole lot different from the usual! This has always been the time for people to fly out, putting Riyadh on a hiatus of sorts. However, this summer season it’s going to be a different picture. We’re seeing events lined up all month, people are getting ready for the World Cup and with Ramadan just around the bend, folks are opting for a fun staycation within the city. So what has Destination Riyadh prepared for you this month? Well, with Father’s Day and FIFA fever hitting the city soon; it got us turning our attention towards the Dads, bros, dudes and simply, the Riyadhi Gents—Yes, guys of Riyadh, this is about you. This is the Macho Issue. We’ve manned up the pages with features on all things men need and all things men like. We know you love your cars and this issue is stocked full of them. Thumbs DOWN to Abuse of Human Growth Hormone (HGH)
A lot of men today turn to a substance called human growth hormone (HGH) in hopes that it will help build their muscles and slash fat. Even though many medical professionals say that the dangers surrounding HGH are very minimal, over dosage can be extremely harmful. Some of the sides effects may include increased swelling, joint pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and increased risk of diabetes. People who purchase HGH without a doctor’s prescription may be buying tainted products.

For their fourth year anniversary, Luxury Events went all in! Loyal fans are to this date raving about it. Following their success with The Fluffy Tour, Saudi Sandstorm, Street Madness series, and the Eddie Griffin show, Luxury Events brought Maz Jobrani as its special act this year, paired with the local comic geniuses of Saudi Arabia. Held at the Reem International Circuit last month, the Luxury Events Anniversary took care of every detail to give a one of a kind, truly luxury experience. Prince Sultan University Gets a Taste of TEDx
Be Inspired to Inspire
By Jou Pabalate
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, then chances are you have at some point come across a TED video in the last year or so. Let it be known, I will travel halfway across the world on stilts if it meant getting in a TED conference. Its stage has seen the likes of Stephen Hawkings, the Dalai Lama, Elizabeth Gilbert, Steven Johnson to name a few, to share their nuggets of wisdom. The 20-minute talks revolve around one inspiring premise — to create a platform for ideas worth spreading. Hence, it was an absolute delight when Prince Sultan University students told us that they would be hosting a TEDxPrinceSultanU right in its own backyard. TEDx, for the uninformed, is an independently organized event that aims to bring together local personalities to share their experiences and success stories. TEDxPrinceSultanU was able to deliver on its banner, “Be Inspired to Inspire” on May 3. With 15 speakers on its agenda, there was no shortage of insightful narratives during the event. Nouf Al Razk and Sarah Marea, for example, spoke of their journey to finding their place in the world. Creativity further surged at the event, with the likes of Nasser 16 DESTINATION RIYADH
Garrem, a military officer who chose to become an artist, and Mohammed Shuaibi, who turned his love for manga and anime into a career, flourished. We also listened to the struggles and eventual triumph of Saleh Olayan, who reminded us that we should not be ashamed to fail but instead, use it as a fuel to become great. Innovation was also at the heart of the talks. Abdullah Al Ghadouni, Faisal Al Saif and Ranim Al Mohandes explored new ways in which technology and our ideas are shaping the world today.
Y O U SAID IT While all of the talks were captivating, I was deeply moved by Saeed Kaffaf. A young man who wishes to represent people with disabilities. He made us listen not because of what he can’t do as a person with special needs. Rather, he showed us if he can do a lot of things amid his situation, we have no excuse to not achieve our own personal aspirations. TEDxPrinceSultanU is one of the avenues for creative dialogue in the city. I am hopeful that initiatives like these would lead to more platforms for the young minds of Riyadh to meet and further spread worthwhile ideas.

How to Impress Your Boss By Anousha Vakani
Being great at what you do is only one rung up the corporate ladder; there are a number of other equally important things that will determine how successful you are at work. Here are six ways to impress your boss by exceeding expectations and taking interest in more than just your immediate responsibilities. 2. Keep a clear workspace
Quoting Einstein, “If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?” Aim for something in between: keep all your papers filed but only keep the important ones in sight, keep your stationery organized in a drawer or holder and take two minutes before you leave work every evening to sort out your desk.
thobe
suit
First things first 1. Dress for success
This might be a no-brainer for some, but the number of people who turn up to work in last week’s wrinkled shirt is surprising. Maintain a professional appearance down to your hair, nails and attire. Always follow the dress code and find out if your company allows casual Thursdays before turning up to work in jeans. And finally, never underestimate the importance of good personal hygiene. 22 DESTINATION RIYADH
Dealing with office politics 3. Don’t take sides and always stay professional
Even the most professional work places aren’t always sunshine and roses. In the event of a rift between two of your colleagues, never take sides and avoid any unnecessary involvement including gossip. If the friction is between you and another colleague, deal with them in a professional way by working together to reach a solution.
4. Be a team player
Do not try to manipulate or cheat your way to success. Keep the company’s wellbeing your priority and let your hard work pay off. Never undermine your colleagues in an attempt to look better than them, instead always be friendly and try to understand and get to know everyone.
6. Take on extra work
Your work 5. Don’t complain
Think outside the box, participate in special projects and always be on the lookout for anything that might benefit the company.
There is nothing worse than an employee who is always complaining about the workload. Manage your time and differentiate between what you can and cannot do. If the work really is more than you can handle, communicate this to your boss in a professional manner and come up with a solution.

Falah Al Jarba A Riyadh Drifter Think flashing lights on the outskirts of Riyadh with the sound of revving engines and screeching tires, the smell of burned rubber filling the air. In the middle of it all is where you’ll find Falah Al Jarba. By Jou Pabalate Photography by Rashid Shahid

One of the first professional drifters in the Kingdom, Falah Al Jarba is the personification of Tokyo Drift meets the Transporter. He is the owner of DB security, one of the leading security firms in the Kingdom. Amid the testosterone driven world he lives in, Al Jarba maintains a charming and jolly demeanor. He is a true Riyadhi gentleman and devoted husband. Al Jarba started out like any young Saudi in search of an adrenaline rush. He would drive around the city and race with his friends, all under the radar. While it was a thrilling high, he knew the danger he was getting himself into every time he was behind the wheel. His introduction to professional drifting was a happy coincidence. While running one of his company’s security projects for a race competition, he was invited to try the circuit. He fared well compared to the actual competitors in the race. This, together with his desire to satisfy his need for speed without putting himself and others in harm’s way, solidified his decision to be a professional. “If I didn’t go pro, I would have probably ended up in a hospital, not just once, but again and again,” he said.
Al Jarba debuted in the first ever drift competition held in the country in 2011. Ever since, he has joined different events in the Middle East, usually being the only Saudi driver representing the green flag. All his races are dedicated towards two organizations close to his heart: the Alzheimer’s Society and the Al Waleed Bin Talal Foundation. Professional racers will tell you that having sponsors is a requisite for any team or sport for that matter in order to thrive and survive. When Al Jarba began his drifting career, it was a very young sport and he had to be self-sufficient. “It wasn’t easy,” he recalled. “I would race using my own stock car that I would modify myself and with the help of friends. And there were not a lot of races to join, even in the UAE. The sport was not yet that developed.” Instead of giving up, Al Jarba sought ways to develop the drifting community himself. He chose to be a trailblazer, armed with the belief that Saudi amateurs would excel as drifters and share his passion. His hard work eventually paid off and Al Jarba made history when he organized the biggest drifting event in the Middle East in 2013, the Riyadh D. Automobiles: We just can’t live without them. They have become an inevitable part of our life in Saudi Arabia. There were some brands we loved back in the day, some we started loving recently and some which we just can’t tolerate. Modify Your Ride By Hamid Hafiz
Big boys and their toys is a saying that we always hear yet some of us fail to understand the true relationship that men have with their cars. There’s so much more to cars than we actually know; it’s an entire world to itself where you can do so much with and turn a regular car to a customized one made exactly like each one wants or even dreams of. Saudi Arabia is considered one of the top countries where automotive performance is a major thing. Whatever a guy needs when it comes to his shiny toy can be found here in our city, from hydraulics, custom performance and imports. Here are some modification methods and materials used to customize a car:
In-car Entertainment System
Body kits intensify the exterior look of the car, making it unique from others of the same model. Body kits comprise of the front bumper, side skirts, diffuser and spoilers. Most body kits are made using Poly-Urethane which is a rubber-like material. On the other hand the Vortex diffuser is more popular because it channels air more smoothly over the car during high speed.
Car Accessories
Aftermarket steering wheels, gear levers, handbrakes and Installing a higher quality pedals provide better grip entertainment system offers and enhance the interior clearer sound to the car’s appearance of a car. Body Kits
Headlights
HID lamps (High Intensity Discharge) are brighter and whiter lights. However, you may replace the existing headlight with white headlight bulb, which produces a white light. Make sure that the bulb is the same wattage as the original, to avoid the risk of fire.
Solar Film
Sport Rims
Exhaust
Solar film eases the load on the air conditioner by lessening the heat of the sun and controlling light transmission and it helps in reducing the exposure of the harmful ultraviolet rays, as they add a sporty touch to the car.
Sport rims aren’t just an accessory to a car but they actually increase the car’s performance. There are two types of rims: wider rims and forged rims. Wider rims stretch soft compound tires, making it lower, wider and firmer. And at a high speed, a car is more stable if it uses slightly wider rims. Forged rims are lighter, which magnifies the handling performance of the car as it works better with the suspension. Lighter rims work well during acceleration too.
The exhaust system is made to boost the power of the car, which means that the burned fuel and air leave the combustion chambers at a faster rate.
Tires Brakes
Suspension
Aftermarket brakes have better stopping power, reduces the brake distance and improves the image of the car as it looks better and fills the space behind the spokes of the sport rims.
A stronger suspension system boosts the car stability, reduces body roll and allows for a quicker turn. Lowering a car gives the car a vibrant and sporty façade as well.
Performance tires boost the handling, grip and cornering capability of the car as it helps sustain a higher speed. However, you need to do a wheel alignment after the tires are mounted because if the tires are not perfectly aligned it can affect the handling characteristics and the fuel consumption. ABDULLAH AL OTHMAN The Artist Behind the Question By Jou Pabalate
For a while, Riyadhis only knew him as the anonymous artist behind the #Allah art discovered all around the city. His works trended on Twitter, some attributing them to a Syrian refugee; others stirred up a rumor of a man embittered by the system. All the stories were laid to rest when Abdullah Al Othman went out with his very first solo exhibition in the city entitled, “The Question” at the Alaan Art Space. As an emerging Saudi artist and poet, Abdullah’s contribution to the local art scene is far from traditional. His work, which has been exhibited in Italy and Jeddah, are highly conceptual and speaks of his own intellectual inquiry about the world. He embraces the art philosophy of Marcel Duchamp, “Art is Life” and indeed, one would see such influences in his pieces. I went to Alaan Art Space on a Saturday afternoon to meet with Abdullah. He agreed to give me a tour of his exhibit together with his good friend and translator, Morabet Fahad. At the onset of our encounter, this 28-year old Najdi had an elusive but charming demeanor to him. I found myself submerged in an insightful conversation with a man who believes that asking the right questions is more important than getting the answers.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, I’m sure everyone would like to know, who is Abdullah Al Othman?
Talking about the self is tricky for me (laughs). I’m not trying to be a mystery man or an everyday misunderstood artist; I simply cannot define who I am. I just know that I am Abdullah Al Othman and I was born with mesmerizing artistic expression. How would you describe yourself as an artist then? What medium do you use in your work?
When possible, I try to take less from the form and focus on the core and consider myself the medium of art itself. I use every tool my hands can get a hold of. This is how my artistic process allows me to create. I try to fathom what is before me and express through what is present. What do you plan to achieve with your work? What impact do you want to create in the art movement in Saudi Arabia? My goal in art is to find out more about life; a better life. I
am a close friend of Duchamp, who influenced me in this belief. It’s not about searching for messages to express my work or being the messenger. I want to capture life in a way that is raw and invites people to think deeply. I want to share emotions and motion, running away and joy. I draw inspirations from a missed note of a musician, an explosion or from a direct clear question. Speaking of questions, what is “the question” in your exhibition?
It’s the question of life. It is a layer of different questions I ponder and so does everyone else. The main piece from which this exhibition revolves around is called, “The Question.” It is a video collection of interviews I did with different people. As you will find, it’s not just one question I asked, it’s an intimate conversation about God and their belief, attempting to capture their reaction and true feelings.
After this rather intriguing dialogue you’ve created for your exhibition, did you get the answers you were looking for?
If you consider more questions to be answers, then yes. The questions that emerged as I moved from one inquiry to another are something I value more than the actual clarity of answers. There is something limiting and definite about having an answer, I would rather keep on asking and creating. What’s your favorite work from this collection?
I would have to say the Pepsi*, I jumped into the abyss and survived.
*The Pepsi is a mix of still images and a slow motion video of Abdullah jumping off a can of Pepsi. What’s next for Abdullah Al Othman? I am not the kind of person who thinks of the future. I can tell you that I will keep on marching and striving to express myself and my thoughts.

Top 10 THINGS
not to forget while
traveling By Naureen Subzposh
Traveling abroad isn't as simple as buying a ticket and hopping on a plane anymore, so don’t worry when the next time after arriving at your destination, you realize that an essential item has been left at home. You are not the only one. It happens to all of us. Here’s a handy list of some common items that will be helpful while packing:
Glasses/shades:
Use a backpack:
Toiletries:
We often only carry one pair of spectacles/shades, the one we wear! Always carry a spare in case your designer specs get broken, lost or worse still, out of fashion!
A large backpack is practical and probably a better bet than a rollaboard suitcase for lugging onto trains and traveling between destinations. But bring a secondary bag too, like a small fabric tote bag, for everyday touring around cities.
Always carry travel-size toiletries such as shampoos, shower gels and toothpaste. Bring lots of wipes too, you’ll thank us later.

Pack an extra set of clothes in your carry-on bag: Don’t be one of those travelers decked out in J’adore Paris apparel because the airline lost your luggage and you have nothing else to wear till the next flight connection. Always keep a spare set of clothes.
Be money smart: Look up the monetary conversion rate before you go and spend. Plan in advance how much foreign currency you need and how much can you take with you to your destination (some countries have restrictions on the amount of foreign/ local currency you can bring in). Also, make sure your credit card will work in the country you're visiting.
Dress according to the weather and local custom: Pack appropriate clothing and accessories. Umbrellas, hats are always useful while traveling to hot climates. Regardless of the place, it is always better to carry a shawl in a bag or purse just in case.
Mobile chargers & adaptors: International roaming data plan: Nowadays local companies offer competitive rates for your stay abroad. Make sure you contact your local operator for more information. Regardless, it is better to download apps and upload pics only when you have access to a wifi connection. Even with reduced rates on data plans, they can still be really expensive!
Passport & other important documents: Even if you are traveling domestic, always carry your passports and national ID cards. Residents, do not forget to keep a copy of your Iqamas and Exit Re-Entry Visa papers. Bear in mind, even though it takes less than a day now to get your Exit Re-entry logged in to the system, make sure you don’t leave it too late close to the travel date.
Never forget to take your mobile charger and adaptors/ converters along with it. As different countries have different plug/switches. Carry the charger in your hand luggage, as you might need to charge your phone in the airport lounge/coffee shop.
iPod/iPad: During long journeys, one can easily get bored. Plug into your iPod/iPad. and enjoy your travels.

Downtown is also served well by the metro making travel extremely easy too. That way you can imagine yourself in some ancient moment from antiquity, approaching them for the first time, and maybe, just maybe understand the marvel and awe felt by Antipater of Sidon, Philo

OUTSIDE OF CAIRO Get yourself over to the diving capital Dahab in the Sinai region. It’s serene, it’s calm and it’s quieter than busy Sharm. Visit St. Katherine’s monastery to understand the serenity of the area around Mount Musa, where God spoke to Moses, then enter the monastery to see the “descendent” of the burning bush before stopping off at the little museum which holds a copy of the agreement sent by the Prophet Muhammad to the monastery securing its protection. The document contains an outline of a hand that is believed to have been that of the Prophet. Who should go? Cairo is definitely for the history buffs, and the intrepid explorer that loves to be literally tripping over history, be it the classical Pharaonic Egyptian history or the more recent Islamic history, while Sharm and Dahab is for those that want to lay on the beach and be served on hand and feet before taking a dive into the deep blue of the Red Sea to experience its stunning coral reef of the Red Sea.

Pharaoh Pepi II (2246 - 2152 B.C.) became Egypt's king when he was only six years old. The ancient Egyptians were the first people to have a year consisting of 365 days divided into 12 months. They also invented clocks. Ancient Egyptians needed to predict when the Nile would flood, which led to the development of the world's first calendar. TAKING A Food Trip in Hong Kong
Milk Honey Buns:
One little interesting tidbit: the bread in Hong Kong is amazing. That’s all you need to know. Where to Find: This particular lovely piece of brioche bread was found in The Little Mermaid, in Harbour City.
From the 33 pages, about 10 were dedicated to food, street food at that. Pictures of street food, where to find street food, articles commending street food, and just about everything to do with streets And so, when I finally set foot on previously-Britishbut-currently-Chinese-sortof soil, I did nothing but munch my way through the territories that never slept (hi, Kowloon.).
Here is what I ended up EATING and how to find it: 54 DESTINATION RIYADH
Even chocolate milk can be considered street food, if it’s packaged as prettily as the Kowloon Dairy’s line of milk products. Best part? The bottles are old-school style recyclable, you wash and return the bottles when you’re done with them. Where to Find: Any 7-Eleven, which can be found in abundance in Hong Kong, especially the Tsim Sha Tsui area.
By Jou Pabalate
This year, I was lucky enough to be blessed with visiting Hong Kong. And as I normally do whenever I’m excited about a trip, I spend hours on the internet compiling a travel guide. Which ended up being 33 pages. For a seven-day trip. No, I wasn’t too excited. Thirtythree pages is completely normal. Yes. Shush.
Kowloon Dairy Chocolate Milk
Egg Tarts
These are little pastry shells filled with an egg custard, and they have a Portugese origin. Not bad, but not the sort of thing I’d go back and eat again. Where to Find: Wherever there is a street bakery.
DID you know! Chopsticks originated from China approximately 4,000 years ago
Pineapple Buns
Another bakery wonder. Pineapple buns, but don’t actually have pineapple in them. They’re little sweet buns that are topped with a sugary and sweet crust, which is where they got their name. They’re popular in Hong Kong, and are my favorite things ever. Where to Find: In any cha chaan teng or bakery in Hong Kong. My personal favorite was from Kai Kee restaurant on Kimberly Street.
Pies
I know what you’re thinking. “Pies?! In Hong Kong?! Is she crazy?” And the answer is yes, yes I am. Crazy for pie crust! Which the above pictured mini pies has an abundance of. They are so good, pictures do not do them justice. Where to Find: Pie and Tart Specialists on Granville Road. Get the apple pie and the milk tart pie.
Noodles
Huge fan of noodles? Move to Hong Kong. And live there. Forever. A vegetarian option can be found in most noodle shops, and all you need to do is park yourself and enjoy the awesomeness that is stir-fry on a side street seat. You’ll need to know how to use chopsticks, though, no namby-pamby forks here. Where to Find: Any food district. The Temple Market street has a number of noodle and seafood shops.
Parmesan Cheese Cake
Crispy Duck
This one’s a little harder to find, seeing as there’s a lack of halal Cantonese eateries. But if/when you do find a place that can sell it, RUN (towards it) LIKE THE WIND. Get a side of noodles because noodles need no excuse. Where to Find: Wai Kee in Wan Chai. Kindly keep in mind it’s a very messy, loud, down-to-earth place, so go in your most casual clothes.
Ever wondered what cheesecake would taste like if someone remade it into a cloud and then cut it into small sponge cake pieces? Neither have I. But this is what the result would be if someone actually had been curious (and magical) enough to do it. Where to Find: Toastbox, or Breadtalk.
Hong Kong French Toast
You know what you get when you deep fry French toast and drizzle it with condensed milk (and possibly add a layer of peanut butter if your heart can bear it)? Marvelousness. Pure marvelousness. Where to Find: Any cha chaan teng, wonderful abodes of food they are.

SOME LIKE IT HOT!
Where To Find Spiciest Food in Riyadh
by Portuguese voyagers who used to roam the world for spices. British and French dishes, for example, hardly have any hot spices, as their culinary culture did not originally include them. Luckily Riyadh has the best combination of both east and west when it comes to food, which means you can have them right here, in the comforts of your own city! In this issue, we’ve decided to sacrifice our taste buds and test the hottest foods in Riyadh, and rank it in levels of our own Scoville unit capacity. Read on if you dare!
By Reina Vidad Tejano
Some people are born with a sweet tooth, others with a tangy tongue. But if you’re anything like me, you’re one of the few who like it HOT! And not just the simple hot-sauce type of hot, but more like the unholy-cowmy-mouth is-on-fire kind of hot. I even always carry a small pack of dried red chili peppers in my bag to make sure that if I do happen to chance upon a restaurant that doesn’t have spicy food, I am prepared enough to still get a “hot” meal, nonetheless. You’ve probably noticed that the popularity of spicy food is mostly concentrated in Asian countries. This is because the introduction of chili peppers to the Western world was fairly recent, brought to Europe 56 DESTINATION RIYADH
1. Wasabi Prawns of The Noodle House: This one-of-a-kind creation is available only at The Noodle House, an Asianfusion restaurant known for its relaxed atmosphere and Chinese food. It’s made of tempura-styled prawns drenched in a special sauce made of wasabi and a side dish of mango salsa. The prawns have that kick that only wasabi could give, but they’re also enveloped by a sweet and savory taste that would make you want more.
You can find The Noodle House on the third floor of Centria Mall, Thalateen St. Spicy Level:
2. Chicken 65 from The Indian Garden: This is a secret find, primarily because no one really knows why it’s called “Chicken 65” and whether the number 65 is a reference to something. All we know is that it came from India and is made of chopped, deep-fried chicken flavored with mostly ginger, cayenne and mustard spices. It’s meant to be eaten as an entrée and is usually paired with beer or malt beverage. In Riyadh, we found the spiciest Chicken 65 at the Indian Garden, a fast-food counter in the food court of Riyadh Gallery Mall. They can serve it mildly, but if you want to challenge your taste buds, you can request it to be “superduper spicy” and they will follow your orders. Also, they have the rest of the classic Indian spicy viands like the Chicken Masala and Biryani. Spicy Level: (May vary upon request.)
3. Spicy Squid Salad from Thai Villa Restaurant: I have never salivated in front of a salad dish as much as I did with the Spicy Squid Salad. Not just because it’s deliciously spicy, but the mere whiff of the chili peppers and lemongrass and coriander automatically made my mouth water. Fresh chili peppers are in the mix so unless you are a seasoned spicy food eater, be careful. Also, you’ll have to sift through the blanket of spices to get to the squids, but it’s definitely worth it. Apart from the Spicy Squid Salad though, Thai Villa Restaurant offers a very wide range of spicy and authentic-tasting Thai food – from their Tom Yum to their Pad Krappao. I’d name them all but I only have a few pages. It’s a spicy-lover’s paradise over there (not to mention, it’s affordable), so head on to the end of Oruba St., across King Khaled Eye Hospital if you ever need a Thai fix. 4. Kimchi Chowder from The Peninsula: Kimchi is a popular Korean side dish pickled with red chili peppers, and I was intrigued to see it affixed with the word “chowder” at The Peninsula Seafood Restaurant’s menu. This soup selection is a marriage of scallops, crabmeat, squid, shrimp and fish in a very creamy and spicy soup. The heat was definitely kimchiflavored and the spiciness could creep up on you with every sip but overall, it also felt homey. The seafood meat is very generous and one order can fill you up. Think of it as a spicy hug on a cold day. The Peninsula is along King Fahd Road, near Tamimi Supermarket. Spicy Level:
5. The Volcano Maki from Sushi Yoshi : The name says it all. One bite of this Japanese weapon can be explosive. In fact, whenever it’s ordered, waiters are obliged to warn customers that this is an extremely spicy choice, practically bordering on dangerous. It may look harmless from the outside, but the damage will come from within, as there is, quite literally, a ball of wasabi wrapped inside the maki, which is already topped with a wasabi-mixed sauce. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart! If you can risk the possibility of not breathing for almost two minutes, you’ll survive this dish. After all, what is spicy food if not an adventurous feat? Sushi Yoshi is at the end of Tahlia Street. Spicy Level: And maybe a trip to the Emergency Room. DESTINATION RIYADH 57

Where serendipity meets a good mini-burger. By Johara Al Mogbel
Summer is almost here and we know it will positively scorch us. Our pool’s being put to good use (yay!) and we got to scratch off a number of restaurants on our To Try list.
After much serendipity, we went! And we enjoyed it so much we went again. In the same week. Yes. (It’s a fun place, and their placemats do double duty as a beloved childhood game. We approve).
On the first visit we ordered the club sandwich, trio of baby burgers, fried shrimp, caramel cheesecake and chocolate souffle. Second visit, iskendar kebap pizza, First up, Kitchenation at the margherita pizza, burger Mira Hotel on Tahlia Street. We discovered this restaurant with the works, fried shrimp (again), and baby burger trio from a snapchat and what (also again). Any guesses on we could see from the what our favorite decor was so intriguing we orders were? spent the next three weeks planning (and failing) to go there and scout the place.

Now, as for their dessert. Okay. Here’s the thing. Their display is gorgeous. There’s a counter with all the available desserts, and everything looked so pretty we judged based on looks. Don’t do that. Don’t ever do that. You might end up in bitter disappointment. Hah! We also had the lollipop brownies to go, and discovered they had nuts in them. And was bland as well. We’d like to point out that they all look homemade, so points go for that, and the plates come decorated beautifully. Asides from that,
we really hope they improve their dessert to taste as good as it looks, the place would be positively marvelous then. Service was also decent, they get slightly crowded on Friday at lunchtime but not horribly so. The food is delivered quickly nonetheless and there’s a window were you can see your food cooked and the chef hanging out. They don’t allow reservations, which is acceptable so far, the restaurant isn’t known yet and is usually empty during the week. But we do hope they change their policy regardless. REACHING THE LOFTY HEIGHTS OF FATHERHOOD By Yacoob Manjoo
As Muslims, we often hear about the virtues, blessings and rewards of motherhood in Islam. And while it seems Muslim men can never quite reach such lofty heights, fatherhood still comes with a plethora of goodness. For all the new fathers, the fathers-to-be and those who have been on the job for a long time and need some motivation, here are a few of the many tremendous blessings and opportunities for increased productivity that Allah has granted you through your role of being a father: to raise another human being. By accepting this responsibility and proceeding To start, the simple act of with the right intentions, observation can bring one closer to Allah. Intellectually, every moment spent in fulfilling this trust can we know that Allah is the Creator, Cherisher, Nourisher become an act of worship. and Sustainer of everything. 2. 1. A Personal Sign and Trust
Beyond observation, the fact that A llah has given you a child means he trusts you and deems you worthy enough 60 DESTINATION RIYADH
For example, you can develop tremendous sabr (patience) when day after day, you have to burp a difficult infant, rock your baby to sleep or deal with a toddler’s tantrums. And in the course of raising your kids, you learn to apply selfsacrifice when you have to give up your time, energy, wealth and even sleep for the sake of your kids.
Aside from developing good qualities, fatherhood also helps you to suppress bad qualities. As an active, helpful father, you simply don’t have time to be lazy. There are far too many demands on you and if you shirk your responsibilities, you’ll face the wrath of your wife — who will let you know that you are not pulling your weight. Pressure and necessity can bring out the best in us and fatherhood comes with plenty of this! At the same time, helping your wife with the baby develops your sense of empathy and also builds in you a work ethic — a habit of serving others. So, when things feel tough, look at the bigger picture:
Through your children, Allah has given you characterbuilding challenges. Embrace them as opportunities rather than problems.
3. Spiritual Benefits
On a personal level, fatherhood can help you develop in your deen (religion). For example, we know the value of worshipping Allah in the middle of the night. When your child is very young, he or she will probably wake up at these times for the night feed. If you handle that feed or if you help your wife with it, you will develop a habit of waking up in the middle of the night. Feeding the child (or helping) is an act of worship
in itself, but you can double your reward by also making dua and dhikr in those late night hours. Once your child outgrows the night feed, you are already in the habit of waking up in the night — so you have a golden opportunity to make Tahajjud a habit in your life. For new fathers, you also have the chance to develop your wife’s spirituality. If your wife is breastfeeding, you’ll notice how long and
frustrating the process can sometimes be for her. While some mothers counter the boredom with spiritually unproductive activities (TV, music, etc., while breastfeeding), you can give her alternatives that will feed her soul and mind. For example, put Islamic lectures (audio or video), Quranic recitation or any other beneficial items on her mobile phone, which is convenient enough for her to operate while feeding. Such alternatives also expose your infant to religion from an early age, which is a bonus.
much more. Practically, this can draw you closer to them and spiritually, it can inspire you to make dua for them in a more heartfelt way: “My Lord! Have mercy on them both as they cared for me when I was little.” [Qur’an: Chapter 17, Verse 24]
Aside from these, there are many, many other blessings and opportunities that come with fatherhood in Islam.
Fatherhood also prompts you to study effective da’wah techniques: The most important person you can guide to the deen is not another adult, but your own child. So it pays off (especially in the Hereafter In sha Allah) to learn how best to call to Islam on a one-to-one level.
4. Appreciation for Your Own Parents
Being a father can also help improve your relationship with your own parents. As you raise your own child, you experience the struggles your parents went through in raising you. Hence you can appreciate their efforts so

Nutrition and Supplements for Men
By Fatmah Azam Ali
Weight training and bodybuilding nutrition go handin-hand. One of the few reasons why you’d want to combine the two is to improve your self-confidence and to look healthy. There’s absolutely no need for you to build six-pack abs, triceps or biceps to an extent that you may resemble a body-builder. Rather, bodybuilding and following a proper diet can spare you from getting that flabby body look that men are usually prone to after the age of 30. Your nearest gym will have experienced trainers who can help you with the weight training and bodybuilding process while guiding you with the proper nutrition plan as well. But here are a few quick tips and supplement suggestions if you plan to start early by yourself. • Whether your membership at the gym has begun or not, a few aspects of bodybuilding can start before you join. Your diet should be balanced
with high protein content. Building muscle requires lots of protein. You can buy most of the highprotein shakes from Danube or Hyperpanda markets. However, the best ones are the ones that can be found at your gym. • Most gyms are equipped with their own shop of bodybuilding supplies, but if your facility lacks one, you can check out GNC. The “Mega Bodybuilder” Creatine supplement is an excellent addition to any body-building diet. HMB (Calcium B-hydroxy

I’m delighted to bring to you some basic nutrition guidelines to keep you on the road to better health and wellbeing. There’s a lot to cover on men’s health so I have compiled a few tips for you whether you are already building on a healthy diet or starting from scratch and would like to change the way you think about food. Don’t forget the water and a regular exercise program! The key is to think fresh, local produce. It’s “greener” for the planet by not traveling so far and generally fresher than imported. Buy organic if that’s possible, better still grow your own and choose of course variety the spice of life. Living in Jeddah provides amazing nutrition on your door step with fresh fish and seafood from the red sea and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, what more could you ask for to get started for better living!

Here are the top 10 excuses I hear as to why eating healthy is difficult. Rather than chopping out all your favorite treats, take your enhancing health program step by step. Remember, fast food like burgers and fries pile on the pounds, fill you up for a short while and set you up to crave sugar, stimulants and more bad foods. Substitute take-away foods for your home made healthier options, your body and mind will thank you for it.
Healthy eating is all about being organized. You’re one step ahead of the game and sure to be a front runner. Preparation is key like every other challenge you face in life.

1. I’m too busy. 2. It’s difficult to find healthy food stores where I work. 3. I can’t cook. 4. Cooking is not for me. 5. I hate fruit and vegetables, they are so un-palatable. 6. My mother always prepared my food, now that I am single, I don’t have time and need someone to do it for me. 7. I walk through the door and grab what ever is in the cupboard, usually crisps and chocolate biscuits. The idea of preparing food when I’m hungry is just a no win. 8. I’m not keen on food shopping, would rather hang out with my friends. 9. Man cooking is just not cool. 10. It’s the washing up afterwards.
Nutritionists like to group food so I have made a list for you of the main food groups with a few examples in each group:
Carbohydrates:
Protein:
Oat and muesli cereals, potatoes, pasta, rice, couscous, wholemeal and grainy dark bread.
Dried peas, beans and lentils, tuna and anchovies, milk, eggs, cheese, yoghurt, chicken, beef, lamb, fish and seafood.
Fresh Fruit/ Vegetables:
Herbs and Spices:
Anything seasonal is good. Make sure you choose lots of green colored vegetables, vibrant red, orange, yellow and even blue!
I love experimenting with these. I have too many favorites. For example parsley, coriander, basil, cumin, cardamom, turmeric, saffron and dried chili powder to name a few.
Fat:
Oils such as flax, rapeseed, linseed and olive. Unsalted butter. Dried nuts and seeds.
It’s time to go shopping! I have made it easy for you so here are some foods to think about for your next week’s food shop.

Kale
Dark Chocolate
Kale is full of antioxidants and fiber. It’s also rich in vitamin K, which aids in blood clotting and cell growth.
Satisfy your sweet tooth by choosing dark chocolate over milk chocolate. Studies have proved that dark chocolate is not just good for the heart but for the brain as well. It can help improve cognitive function and dark chocolate also helps reduce your risk of strokes. Moreover, it’s loaded with antioxidants and helps control blood sugar.
Make Kale a part of your salad or try baking them in the oven after drizzling them with olive oil or garlic flavored butter. After baking, their crispy texture can be a perfect replacement for chips or any crispy snack.
Broccoli
Quinoa
Steam it, stir-fry it, or put it in your salad or chicken, Broccoli can be cooked and enjoyed in so many ways. Lets not forget Broccoli is associated with anticancer benefits and higher immunity. Broccoli is also high in fiber, and helps keep blood pressure down.
Quinoa is high in protein and gluten free too. It is the perfect replacement for rice or bread. Considered part of healthy super food, Quinoa promotes bone growth and reduces cholesterol.
Steel-cut Oats
Chia Seeds
Black Beans
We usually end up grabbing the boxed flavored oatmeal when we go for grocery shopping. Try replacing flavored oats with steel cut oats because they are minimally processed and without any additives. Steel cut oats can be cooked in water or milk and if you like it sweet, just add honey.
Chia seeds are a good source of the plant omega-3 fatty acid ALA. They may also help protect against inflammation, arthritis and heart disease. Try adding some chia seeds into cereals, oatmeal, salads, breads and smoothies.
High in protein and packed with fiber, you can use black beans in salads, curry, burritos or burgers. All sorts of legumes are not just cheap but easy to cook and extremely healthy too.
Salmon
Avocado
Sweet Potato
Salmon is a rich in Omega-3, which has been scientifically shown to help in preventing coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and rheumatoid arthritis. Salmon is extremely beneficial for healthy skin, and can be enjoyed in a variety of ways that include baking, grilling, frying or steaming.
The nutrients in this vegetable include cholesterol-lowering monounsaturated fat, fiber, copper, potassium and vitamins C, K, and B6. Add avocado to a salad, mash them to make fresh guacamole or just include diced avocado to your wraps, sandwiches or burgers.
Rich in beta-carotene (or Vitamin A). It helps to protect your skin from sun damage by repairing cell damage caused by excessive UV exposure. It also is an excellent nutrient for eye health. Bake them or boil them, they are not just nutritious but healthy too.

Literary Life Lessons in
Manliness
widower, yet an exemplary father and an exceptional lawyer. His own opinion is the most important to him, yet he is the most empathic and sophisticated man to walk the fictional world.
By Anousha Vakani
There is always so much to learn from the characters of your favorite books. Here is a list of four of the most popular male characters from literature and their most commendable characteristics.
“A kind Peeta Mellark is far more dangerous to me than an unkind one.” There’s nothing wrong with being the type of guy who wears his heart on his sleeve. Peeta Mellark is extremely in touch with his soft side without being overly emotional. It is his kindness throughout the entire trilogy that saves his life countless times and helps him eventually end up with his childhood crush.
2. Intelligence and quirk – Sherlock Holmes
1. Integrity -
Atticus Finch from "To Kill A Mockingbird"
“…before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.” Atticus Finch is probably one of the most loved male characters in literature. He can take down a target blindfolded yet does not feel the need to hide behind his gun because that to him is not real courage. He is a

Whether you’re a fan of the novels, the movies or the TV series, Sherlock Holmes is one of the most intelligent fictional characters of all time. Top that off with his trademark eccentricity, and he makes for an extremely intriguing personality. There’s something incredible about a man who can deduce the facts by simply observing his surroundings.
3. Kindness –
Peeta Mellark from "The Hunger Games"
4. Romance –
Mr. Darcy from "Pride and Prejudice"
“In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” Probably one of the most known quotes of all time, Mr. Darcy is the ideal man for many. Despite his many shortcomings, he is known as one of the most romantic fictional men of all time and there is definitely a thing or two to be learned from his character development throughout the novel.

and a major no-no. Many Saudi women are not shy about calling you out on it. Equally is chasing girls in public places as if you are on the hunt in the wild. Do you seriously think you will attract someone by behaving this way?
4. Give up your seat
gentleman By Anousha Vakani
The concept of being a gentleman is now largely lost and considered oldfashioned, but the art of being a gentleman is still just as important as it was a few centuries ago, especially if you want to avoid some major social faux pas around the ladies. We’re not saying you should jump to your feet the minute a female enters the room, but with just a few tweaks in your general etiquette you could set yourself apart from the rest of your peers by being remembered as “the modern gentleman.” What is a gentleman? Gentleman: (noun; plural gentlemen) A chivalrous, courteous, or honorable man: he behaved like a perfect gentleman.
1. Personal grooming
Your appearance is the basis of your first impression, so ensure you’re always decently if not impeccably dressed. Even if you’re just heading out for a quick stop to the grocery store on a weekend, try not to leave the house without at least running a comb through your hair and changing out of your nightclothes.
2. Hold the door open Consider this the key act of the modern gentleman. This applies to cars, restaurants, shops and virtually any door that exists. The ladies appreciate it and it exudes all the right signals.
3. Do not stare There’s nothing that puts off a lady more than this. Remember to be polite and respectful at all times. Gazing in Saudi society is considered very rude
Whether you’re in a waiting room in a hospital or airport, or in a meeting or at a dinner, always give up your seat if there aren’t any more left.
5. Text back promptly If you receive a text, unless you’re really busy, ensure you reply on time so you’re not leaving anyone hanging.
6. Learn to cook The modern gentleman is not under the impression that women should do all the cooking. Learn to cook a few meals and help out in the kitchen and around the house.
7. Bring back the art of giving flowers Sometimes a simple bouquet of flowers can be a better gesture than any other more expensive gift.
“A gentleman doesn’t have one set of manners for the house of a poor man and another for the house of someone with an income incomparable to his own.” - William Maxwell, So Long, See You Tomorrow

A Trip To Historic Saudi AL Baqi Cemetery By Jala Mohamed
The Al Baqi Cemetery of Madinah on the southeast of the Masjid Al Nabawi (The Prophet's Mosque) is also known as Jannatul Baqi, meaning “The Garden of Heaven” or “The Tree Garden of Heaven.” The cemetery is considered one of the most sacred and holy graveyards in the world because it’s where many members of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) close family and companions are buried.
78 DESTINATION RIYADH
The first companion buried in Al Baqi was Uthman bin Madhoon. He was then followed by the Prophet's (pbuh) son Ibrahim, who died in infancy. The people of Madinah then began to use this site for the burial of their own dead, because the Prophet (pbuh) used to greet those who were buried in Al Baqi by saying, “Peace be upon you, O abode of the faithful! God willing, we should soon join you. O' Allah, forgive the fellows of al Baqi.” The site of the burial ground at Al Baqi cemetery was gradually extended. Nearly 7,000 companions of the Prophet (pbuh) and members of his family are buried there, making it the largest graveyard in the Muslim world. Many of the buildings and tombs that identify where exactly the blessed personalities are buried were destroyed to stop people from venerating the graves. Despite this, the cemetery continues to be visited by numerous pilgrims to this day.
