SHARE A TOUCH OF LOVE

KHAIR AL SAUDIA APP

OMO and Comfort introduces Ramadan Campaign in KSA During Ramadan, the iconic laundry care brands introduced their annual community clothes donation drive called “Share A Touch of Love” for the first time in Saudi Arabia. The campaign is in partnership with Uber and NGOs Kiswat Al Sayida Aisha in Jeddah and Bunyan in Riyadh. “Share a Touch of Love” encouraged people to donate clothes to the less fortunate. In an effort to reach more people and make it easier for them to donate, the “Share a Touch of Love this Ramadan” initiative partnered with Uber. At the push of a button, people were able to donate their gently used clothes, by arranging a complimentary pickup through the ‘UberOMO’ option in the Uber app. 10 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

“Don’t turn your treatment into an addiction.” The Ministry of Education has kick-started a campaign to fight misuse and abuse of prescribed medication. “Yes, it does matter” is their argument. It matters when we get regular headaches, it matters if we take our medicine when it is unnecessary, it matters to say no to peer pressure. The Ministry uses social media tools to engage youth, inform them of symptoms of addiction, and encourage them to confront their enemy.

Khair Saudia is a cooperative initiative in partnership with Awqaf Foundation to facilitate the disciplined symbiotic work. The app supports genuine families in need and connects the donor to them. They do not accept donations or cash, rather they create a link between the donor and the families directly. The app also lets the users see the updated status of the families to know about their progress.

THUMB

HOMEGROWN ORGANIZERS BRINGING SOMETHING NEW TO THE TABLE

We love it when Riyadhis step up to make things a tad better and brighter in the city. Lately we’re seeing praise-worthy initiative and creativity from youth-preneurs who are creating different interactive activities to elevate the rather plateauing state of events. Shout out goes to “Catch Games”, yes ladies, we see you and your culturally-themed games, keep ‘em coming!

THUMBS DOWN

Overly-Priced Yet Redundant Events in the City Don’t get us wrong, we love how Riyadh has quickly turned itself around when it comes to events. We are all working towards hitting the 2030 vision and making the city an even livelier and fun-filled capital. But it seems like we’ve hit a slump. When events continuously charge (at times crazy) entry fees for guests to get in, just so they can spend more money on the same overrated food offerings and overpriced items--- it sets us

back. Eventually, if this keeps up people will stop going. And at the rates a lot of organizers are charging, your middle-income families shell out without getting the value for their money. We say, get it together. Get creative. There’s room to be interactive, to offer your guests something memorable. Think of creating an experience. We will gladly spend a buck, if you don’t suck.

Riyadh Welcomes Dignitaries from Around the World In true Najdi tradition, the city rolled out the red carpet for international dignitaries and leaders from around the world. Dubbed as the Riyadh Forums, back to back conferences took place in the capital, focusing on socio-economic cooperation and opportunities apart from the political discourses. US President Donald Trump and the first family were particularly given an eye-opening introduction to Saudi hospitality, with various leaders of the Kingdom and its communities providing the US convoy insight into the culture and future of our society. United Spectrums

SETTING NEW HEIGHTS IN HOSPITALITY

Essam Al Tayyar, CEO and Managing Director

Strongly influenced by KSA’s Vision 2030, United Spectrums looks to firmly adhere to the government’s mission of expanding future service development to the private sector. United Spectrums aims to establish a professional real estate company with fullfledged services, presenting the local market with innovated real estate standards. By introducing Ascott International to the Saudi 12 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

market, Spectrums sets a new level of luxury in Jeddah. Subject to hotel ratings and star system, the high end serviced apartments are presented with international standards and quality. Establishing itself as the market leader in the branded furnished apartment in KSA, Spectrums offers comfortable homelike options for leisure and business travelers, available for overnight or extended stays.

With three properties already operational in Jeddah including Ascott Tahlia, Ascott Sari and Citadines Al Salamah, Spectrum’s target for broadening the guest experience brought the modernized concept to Makkah with a brand new 280 apartment property, set to inaugurate in June. While also introducing the third brand of Ascott international, Somerset, Spectrums is expecting yet another grand opening in 2018.

Owned by Abdul Samad Al Qurashi Group, Adel Kaki, the Global Investor Company, Essam Al Tayyar and Khalid Al Jehani, United Spectrums’ mission is to close and bridge the existing gap within international and local standards of furnished apartments. “We will not stop at this level,” claims Al Tayyar. “We are further introducing a local concept managed by Ascott international with the flagship brand of Spectrums Residence set to open in April at Prince Sultan Road, offering 69 serviced apartments with lavish essential facilities.” With the market rapidly expanding, Spectrums success foretells expansion and further development, possible penetrating different disciplines within the tourism, hospitality, and residential industry. Yet achieving this target couldn’t have been made without the support of Prince Sultan bin Salman, the head of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage, and the Western Province team headed by Mohamad El Amri.

WHO’S WHO

Watch out glass ceilings, Hind Al Zahid is coming for you. By Arwa Al Mousa

14 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD

SKY’S THE LIMIT

Sharqiya’s renowned businesswoman Hind Al Zahid is proof that there isn’t a job too big for a woman. Hired as an executive director, Hind manages King Fahd International Airport, the largest airport in the world by size.

We spoke to Hind Al Zahid, the first Saudi woman to work as an executive director and member of Dammam Airports, about her personal life, professional journey, future goals and the position of women in the Saudi workforce.

Tell us about yourself.

I’m a wife, mother of two and a businesswoman. Beside my work as an executive director and member of Dammam Airports, I’m the head of the Businesswomen Center in The Eastern Province Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EPCCI), an advisory member in the King Faisal University and Imam ibn Abdulrahman University advisory boards, a Steering Committee member for Women’s Employment and the co-founder of Zoha Arabia Co., a retail company based in Khobar. I hold a BA in English literature from Imam ibn Abdulrahman University and an MBA from Gulf University in Bahrain.

What is the biggest obstacle facing Saudi women in labor?

It’s the unequal opportunities in the workplace, also known as the “glass-ceiling” effect, which prevents women from obtaining promotions and upper-level positions. This is not an institutional problem because, as of 2006, the law had been very clear in allowing equal opportunities. However, it’s the stereotypic assumptions that need to change; the ones

that perceive women as unfit for leadership roles. My mission is to change that. I aim to empower women and to give them those opportunities.

What could be done to solve this issue?

I believe in implementing a top-down approach which simply puts women in places of power to press for change that empower women and advance their rights. Thankfully, our country is extremely supportive. Vision 2030 gives a significant emphasis to the Saudi woman and believe in her abilities and her leading role in developmental changes. On a larger scale, I strongly believe in establishing specialized institutions that ensure decent work opportunities for women and protect their rights as workers. I hope that one day we can establish a Ministry of Women and Family Affairs or a Supreme Council for Women.

What do you think of the current status and conditions of Saudi working women?

There’s no doubt that it has improved a lot and I’m very proud to have witnessed and even been part of some of these changes. In my job with EPCCI, we were involved in changing many of the labor laws. For instance: previously, the law required women business owners to always have a male manager running things. Now, women can solely DESTINATIONKSA.COM 15

and completely run their own business. Also, we helped in granting official beauty salons licenses where previously no such license existed; instead they had been operating under tailoring licenses. Official licensing is important to increase the quality of the offered services, promote healthy competition and allow better monitoring. better

monitoring.

What’s the secret to your success?

Knowing my mission in life: Women empowerment. Every one of us has our own mission. Everyone is put on earth to deliver a message and fulfill a purpose. Know what it is that wakes you up excited to start the day every morning and pursue it unwaveringly.

What helps you recharge outside of work?

I slow down, stay in the moment and enjoy the simple things in life, like the taste of a good cup of coffee or the smell of a fragrant flower. I also have an early morning ritual where I wake up at 5 a.m. every day and walk for an hour. This clears my mind and sets me up for the rest of the day.

Can women balance between life and work?

Of course they can but this will require some effort. I always put my family first. I dedicate my weekends to my family and never attend events, weddings or gatherings. On weekdays, I have two fixed hours (from 4 to 6 p.m.) during which I make sure to spend some quality time with my two kids. 16 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

Women empowerment can only happen if we support each other as women. Work together, support each other and raise ourselves up together. — Hind Al Zahid

#INHERENTLYSAUDI A Toyota pickup and a boofiya, what more can we ask for? By Areeb Al Shathri

This scene is so Riyadhi, and we love it. Here are seven other things that are also inherently Riyadhi. Strap in Riyadhis, Auntie Areeb is about to take you on a trip. You, however, don’t get to just sit in the backseat. This is a photo treasure hunt my friends. All we ask is that you participate. When you see this color, that’s the treasure hunt part of this article. Are you ready Riyadhis? 18 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

1. THE SENSE OF HUMOR One of the good aspects that the Internet has exposed about Riyadhis is their sense of humor. There are very few things that we won’t accept if you frame it within a joke. All our parents will say words in jokes they would never use otherwise. So in that spirit, we bring you this article and hope you take it with the grain of salt it deserves. (Send us your favorite Saudi gif)

2. WHEN THIS IS CONSIDERED GRAFFITI OR TAGGING Tagging is when a graffiti artist writes their name on a wall and stylizes it. The issue with our “tagging” is that it’s missing a certain part; the stylizing part to be exact. There is a fine line between graffiti and vandalism. Some argue they are one and the same, but we believe the difference is in the content. If you are beautifying or adding value to something, whether it’s via message or actual beautifying, then that is graffiti. This is both vandalism and an affront to spelling. (Take a photo of bad graffiti)

3. TRAFFIC LINES ARE JUST A SUGGESTION Even though some of these traffic lines are protruding objects in certain areas, we take them with a grain of salt too. The arrows on the ground that point to which direction of traffic that lane should head in is more or less an anger guide. In the scenario bellow let’s pretend we’re about to make a left turn. (Take a photo of someone clearly not sticking to the lanes)

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 19

4. THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF DRIVERS. As a woman around these parts, I often don’t notice these subtle gestures and actions that allow the traffic in Riyadh to flow like a perfect game of Tetris. In order to fully understand the scale of this hidden language’s reach, I immersed myself into the subtle art of turn signal and honking language. Some of these are the universally recognized signals for slowing down, like the hazard light, and the signal for get out of my way, like flashing your headlight; Others are much more local, like the sudden breaking from the car that just cut you off because you didn’t move out of their way fast enough. This signal was a revelation considering the fact that up until that point, I had never seen the use of brakes or brake lights to send a message. Another instance of their use can be seen when a driver want to alert others of a radar. In this order, the driver will first break and then turn on his one of his turn signals to point out the radar. One of the most beautiful acts of unity I have ever seen in my life is when the other cards following suits would give the same signal setting off a chain reaction of cooperation. (Take a photo of a radar) 20 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

5. ICE CREAM TRUCKS DO NOT STOP FOR YOU; YOU STOP FOR THEM. In movies, ice cream trucks roll through a neighborhood blasting that infamous, and slightly annoying, tune attracting every kid within walking distance. Yeah, us Riyadhis can’t relate to that image. For us, ice cream trucks are found strategically in front of schools, select parks and of course on the side of the road in the outskirts of the city. Oh ice cream trucks. You’re still my favorite way to spend my change. Speaking of change… (Take a photo of an ice cream truck)

6. WE DO NOT BELIEVE IN CHANGE Yeah, I still don’t understand this one either, but I accept it as a norm. One-riyal bills are particularly hard to get rid of. For some reason, I’ve noticed that we’re more likely to use a 5-riyal bill for a 2-riyal item. Oh, and let’s not forget about mini market change logic. If you buy anything and your change is in halalas, 9 times out of 10 they’re going to give you gum in lieu of change. (Take a photo of 50 halalas next to a pack of Nova gum)

7. THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A SET PRICE This is a tenant every Saudi mom teaches. We refuse to accept that something is nonnegotiable. Everything, and we mean everything, has a discount. And even if it doesn’t, we’ll still ask to make sure. We don’t really have shopping coupons, so bargaining is the next best thing.(Take a video of you bargaining with an inanimate object)

SO, RIYADHIS, YOU HAVE YOUR MISSION! Join the treasure hunt and beat boredom to a pulp. Don’t forget to tag us on Instagram @destinationryd for a chance to win an #INHERENTLYRIYADHI care package.

ARTIST’S CORNER MEET THIS MONTH’S EMERGING ARTIST! Like father, like son. By Reema Al Humaid

i

NAME: Muath Al Hazm AGE: 27 OCCUPATION:

Calligrapher

Muath Al Hazmi is a 27-year old sales officer who learned the basics of Arabic calligraphy from a renowned artist of the trade, his father

Why calligraphy?

When I was young, I used to sit for hours with my father, a famous calligrapher. He used to teach me the basics of calligraphy and I started to make some pieces in my spare time. Two years later I realized that my wall was full of calligraphy. I started to take courses with top calligraphers in the GCC ever since.

Tell us of the lengthiest time you had to work on a piece.

Three months. It was logo for a legal firm in Turkey.

28 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

Most fun piece you’ve worked on?

I enjoyed every single minute I spent on “Fan”. It means art in Arabic.

What’s your favorite letter to write? Wedding proposals.

What’s your favorite verse to write?

COURTESY PHOTO

“Man does not attain all his heart’s desires, for the winds do not blow as the vessels wish.” It’s my favorite because I always try to do the opposite, I have never believed in it.

What’s the hardest part about calligraphy?

Building the structure, which is the first part in the piece.

What do you think of contemporary Arabic calligraphy?

Picasso said, “I have strived to reach the highest levels of artistic mastery, but I found that Islamic Calligraphy was there ages before I was.” Arabic calligraphy has never been changed or affected by other forms of art.

Where do you get your tools from in Riyadh?

There are a lot of shops on the Instagram and also there is a LEGA shop.

What would you do if you weren’t a calligrapher? I would definitely be a poet. art_m3

BETTER RELATIONSHIPS, ONE GAME AT A TIME They create the games you love. Rock.Paper.Scissor was founded in 2015 by Rola Badkook and Rafah Sahab. We spoke to the duo to know more about the company that’s changing the way people interact and have fun.

What’s the idea behind Rock.Paper.Scissor?

Our ambition is to improve relationships, one game at a time. We strongly believe that playing games has the power to spark constructive and deep conversations and to cultivate pure joy and laughter amongst people. Our concept is all about that connection.

What inspired you to start Rock.Paper.Scissor?

Rock.Paper.Scissors started as a service based business. We began by inviting mothers and daughters for play dates. In April 2015 we were invited to the Idea Conference by the LEGO Foundation in Denmark. It was an inspiring event that brought together brilliant minds and experts from around the world to engage and think about how playful learning can be made more accessible. Before we even returned to Jeddah, we decided we’d launch a game 30 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

for Eid to revive its joyful spirit. Six weeks later, Eid Carnival, our first product, began selling. When we sold 800 boxes in just the last 10 days of Ramadan that year, we knew an exciting journey had started.

What do you think about the tabletop games trend that’s happening in Saudi?

GAMES FOR THE SUMMER Tar Min Agly A quick and easy game that’ll make everyone laugh while trying to forget common words we always forget. Hakawi Al Safar A game that can be played anywhere. There are four different games within Hakawi Al Safar that will challenge your imagination.

Bedon Kalam This game comes in three editions; rasm and movies and music. Adults and kids both will have a fun time trying to enact what’s on the card. Hakawi This is a cool game that’ll encourage your gathering to discuss many different topics.

We are happy that the game making industry is starting to flourish, until recently we were just consumers. When we released Eid Carnival, the market didn’t have any games except Saudi Deal. It is great because, according to research, the MENA region is the second highest spender in the world with little contribution in the gaming industry.

What are your upcoming projects?

We are working on a very exciting educational game that aims to broaden children’s perspective and encourage them to approach the world with more curiosity and love instead of fear and hate. The game will be the first to be launched with an English and Arabic version. It’s also our first game that we hope will reach the global market. Game of Thrones or Die

Gather around citizens of Westeros, for winter is here By Areeb Al Shathri

July marks the month that one of the greatest shows, (just a fact, not opinion), will return to our screens. The newest season of “Game of Thrones” GoT promises to be one of the most intense ones yet. With only two more seasons to go, fans of the books and series are awaiting the premiere with bated breaths. When I say “fans” I mean us. By us, I mean me. With its intricate plots, bevy of characters and its constant need to surprise you, GoT is best watched with a group. And like everything worth 32 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

doing, a GoT viewing party must be done right, or not done at all. It's a big deal, my friends, so for this to work we need to establish a few rules.

Game of Thrones merch is a must! Cushions, mugs and sigil flags - keep them ready.

RULES OF GOT NIGHT

1. Everyone must be settled and ready before the HBO logo appears. 2. You must NOT, I repeat, must not skip or fast-forward the show’s opening credits. -Singing along is not required, though highly recommended. 3. The person most

knowledgeable about GoT (GoT Captain) gets control of the remote. Why? Because when things get confusing for someone, and it will, the captain can pause, explain, and then continue. If the question does not require explanation, the captain may choose to ignore it. This guarantees that everyone is well informed and on the same page.

4. There is no such thing as

“postponing” a GoT viewing party. If you don’t watch it now, it’s your fault. There will be no spoilers ruining the show for anyone.

5. If someone has already watched the episode, they may not attend GoT Night. Part of

the fun is the communal feeling of “What is going to happen?” And besides, no one likes a smarty-pants.

6. Decorate or dress up! GoT is like sports. There are many teams fighting for the same spot. The champion will be awarded a prize, or in our case, a very uncomfortable iron throne. The battles/matches are epic and unpredictable. And, of course, fans of the different teams support them feverishly. I, for one, am team Tyrion all the way.

A friend told me that her mother and friends also have their own GoT night. Each woman rocks a t-shirt with her favorite character’s picture every week. We salute you Aunt Amal and her friends! It’s a lot easier than it sounds. A GoT night is when a group of friends gather and share in a common interest. Some people gather to play video games, some to have beauty days, and others to watch beloved characters get slaughtered on a weekly basis. The joy is in the communal experience of being horrified together. Stay tuned for Season 7 this month!

Sci-fi comedy at its pinnacle, follow the ridiculous adventures of a human as he teams up with an alien travel writer, another human, a manic-depressive robot and the two-headed President of the Galaxy. Read it and join us geeks that always have a smart-ass answer to anyone that even tangentially asks what the meaning of life is.

WHAT TO BINGE-WATCH?

It's about clones, corporations and conspiracies. Watching the lead actress play a dozen characters, each with unique personalities is just awe-inspiring. Darkly sci-fi with welcome respites of comic relief, now’s the time to binge this because the final season is airing right now!

Halt and Catch Fire What started as a not-so-stellar Mad Men style show set within the computer industry of the 80s bravely redirected to focus on the two lead women as they start a gaming company. Character development is top notch and once you get past the first season, the narrative just gets you in its grips and never let’s go. Fourth and final season of this underrated show is slated for later this year.

Gowns and Suits and Jeans, Oh My! Our coverage of the recent Arab Fashion Week By Dalia Darweesh

Founded in 2014, Arab Fashion Week is an annual fashion show held in Dubai, hosted by The Arab Fashion Council. What makes this show especially impressive is that it’s now considered one of the five most important fashion shows in the world and has been added to the International Fashion Week calendar right alongside New York, London, Milan and Paris. Following that international lineup, Dubai’s edition makes sure to not focus solely on designers in the Arab world. This year, for example, they showcased many international designers such as Laura Mancini, Next Generation, Marchesa and Laquan Smith. This gives everyone the chance to expand their market and set up their brands in Dubai and within the Arab world.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM ARAB FASHION WEEK 2017

We noticed floral and pastel looks for the Fall/Winter 2017 collections, particularly in Bruno Caruso’s collection. I guess florals aren’t only for the summer!

SOURCE PHOTO

What makes Arab Fashion Week unique is that they just started a new fashion concept of “ReadyCouture” collections. Dubai is currently the only city in the world that implements ReadyCouture fashion shows and holds them twice a year in May and December.

Many designers showed off a bounty of breathtaking bridal designs. Designers included Speranza, Sylwia Romaniuk and Marchesa Bridal, whose. collection was especially mesmerizing with its elegant yet modern Disney princess gown look.

Leather was dominating the runway with Laquan Smith’s awe-inspiring collection which included skirts, jackets, dresses and thigh-high boots. Not to be outdone, men’s fashion had great representation thanks to designers Rad Hourani and Jenanne Filat, showing off everything from clean-cut suits to classy and laidback winter coats and jackets. This review cannot be concluded without highlighting the beautiful collections of modest fashion by Bekraf and Zoe Eckett. Their jalabiyas and abayas were tasteful features inspired by current Middle Eastern style. Zoe Eckett

Mother and daughter duo Suzan Farhoud and Leen Al Shieshakly were the only Saudi designers at Arab Fashion Week this year, representing their brand Jeans Couture. Even though Farhoud started with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, she still pursued her passion in jewelry design and interior decorating. This fed directly into her love for oriental and European art, not to mention a particular fascination with denim and European fashion.

Between Al Shieshakly’s solid background in the fashion industry and Suzan’s artistic style and love for jeans, the duo came up with the idea of creating a chic and classy denim fashion brand. Thus, Jeans Couture was created.

Her daughter Al Shieshakly attained her bachelor’s in entrepreneurship. Later on, she followed her dream of becoming a visual merchandiser and studied fashion merchandising. She became the head of Visual Merchandise for Bergdorf Goodman and worked with high-end designers such as Christian Dior.

We spoke to Jeans Couture and we learned that their inspiration for the FW17’ Collection came from Spain and Spanish music and rhythm. That’s why we notice their designs have rhythm, movement and layers. “We always like to combine our Eastern and Western heritage. Spain is one of the countries that has a beautiful culture with its music and clothing.” 42 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

The brand’s concept revolves around the phrase: “Couture art-to-wear and attachés for confident, elegant and cosmopolitan women.” Their plan is to be a leading denim brand for art-to-wear couture of luxury clothing and handbags without the use of fur and leathers. Leen’s advice to Saudi designers who are just starting out their careers in the fashion industry was: “Patience. You have got to be patient because it really does take time for something to boom. Especially because this is a product market, not a service market.” Web: jeanscouture.co JeansCouture

DO CHOOSE the best tanning and sunscreen lotions. If you have a light skin tone, you are at a higher risk of getting exposed to UVI rays. Therefore, pick a sunscreen that contains at least SPF 30. (Neutrogena UltraSheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen. Broad Spectrum SPF45) Available at Whites Pharmacy.

DO WEAR sunglasses and a hat (bonus points for the floppy variety). Hats can protect you from getting heat stroke.

SOAKING UP THE SUMMER SUN

DO DRINK a lot of water while tanning. Staying hydrated while getting exposed to the sun is a must.

Here are some tips for safe tanning. By Dalia Darweesh

Summer is here! It’s finally time to hit the beach, bask in the sun and get that summer tan and glow going. Let’s make sure we get our lovely glow while avoiding any mistakes that could harm our skin. How and with what creams? Well, we’ve got you covered! (Pun totally intended.) 44 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

SUN BATHING DOS AND DON’TS: DO APPLY sunscreen. This is the most essential part of protecting your skin during the summer. It’s recommended that you apply it daily regardless of tanning.

DO PROTECT your hair and apply a good oil to take care of it. (NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Multi-Purpose Dry Oil) Available at Al Dawaa Pharmacy.

SELF-TANNING DO’S AND DON’TS: • DO PICK the best self-tanner product for your skin tone, whether it’s light or dark. Hoola Zero Tanlines Allover Body Bronzer from Benefit Cosmetics. It is a gel body bronzer with a custom sponge applicator for a messfree and smooth mattebronze finish.

• DON’T WAX or shave within 24 hours of tanning. Skin can be sensitive and exposing it to the sun could cause skin irritations, breakouts and possibly burns. • DON’T SPEND more than 2-3 hours of tanning a day.

Available at Sephora.

• DO READ the instructions on the bottle to insure you are using it correctly. • DO EXFOLIATE before applying your selftanner. Exfoliating will remove the dead skin cells, making it smoother to apply evenly on your skin. • (If you’re still going to do this outdoors) DO APPLY sunscreen before the self-tanner.

• DON’T FORGET to moisturize after that sun exposure. (Moisturizing & Regenerating After-Sun Balm from Sephora). Hang on, maybe the beach is too far, the weather is too humid or you just want all the joys of tanning without getting exposed to the sun? Yup, you guessed it: let’s talk about self-tanning.

• DON’T USE your bare hands while applying the tanner. Use a glove or mitt for better application. • DON’T SWIM or shower until 4-6 hours after applying the self-tanner.

Available at Sephora. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 45

The Heat & the Hair It’s not easy having long hair during the summer.

By Areeb Al Shathri

46 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

OPTION A SHEAR MADNESS Refresh yourself and your hair by taking a pair of shears through it. Chop it off. Not all of it obviously, unless that’s what you’re into then by all means go for it.

A Pixie cut is adorable,

but can be tricky for certain face shapes. Make sure your stylist knows which suits

you best. We personally recommend the pixie cut for heart and oval faces with straight to slightly wavy hair.

Shaggy and savvy.

Shaggy hair works on different face shapes as well as different lengths. However, a shaggy haircut is best with straight to wavy hair. This hair style could easily make your neck prickle if your hair is down in the heat.

STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMED FAWZI

There are few things quite like the disgusting feeling of having your hair stuck to the back of your neck in soaking clots. Sweat is a natural phenomenon in the heat, but sweat on hair is just wrong. Plain ol’ wrong. If you, like me, despise this feeling with every ounce of your being, then there are really only two ways out. Option A, which is highly recommended, is to:

OPTION B STYLING May the heat be ever in your favor, Riyadhis.

Pony Tails

If you don’t want to lose your locks, you can style your hair to spare your self the extra degrees of heat you get when you have it down. For some reason, the 90s are the best era for up-dos. Go for up-dos this summer, especially since the style of the 90s has been making a comeback.

Braids A fish braid, messy braids, small breads or French braids, this hair shortcut is a lifesaver. If you have some color or highlights in your hair and its medium length, we highly recommend twin braids. They’ll accentuate the color and keep your hair away from your neck. IF you have long hair, we suggest a ponytail fish braid. Pull your hair into a ponytail, part it as you prefer it, and French braid the tail. For added style, you could always add in beads or charms to your braids.

If you’re looking to spruce up this classic, tease the top of your hair and slick back the sides for a sleek Matrix-y look. If that’s not your thing, try the 90s classic half-up ponytail. For an extra 90s flair lay your edges. If you don’t know what that means, it’s the process of styling the baby hairs around your face.

Buns

STAFF PHOTO/ NAWAF ALFARRAJ

Bob

In my years of trying to find the perfect haircut, the bob rose above all others. Whether you’re hair is straight, wavy or curly, or you’re face is round, oval, or heart shaped, bob’s your favorite uncle. If you’re hesitant to go too short, go for a lob (long bob). If you’re after something a bit more dynamic or edgy, go for an uneven or asymmetrical bob.

This is a personal favorite. Low maintenance, high impact. Whether it’s a tight high bun, or a loose messy bun, I’ll take it. We’re not going to teach you how to bun up your hair, because we know you got this one covered. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 47

ZIA Bringing Happiness to Your Workouts Meeting the team behind the local brand. By Jou Pabalate

“There’s a time and place to be headstrong in business. For Zia, what works for us is putting the values of sharing and positivity at the heart of what we do,” said Shaima, 18 years-old and one of Zia's core team members.

When you come across a rack of cool leggings and tank tops, you assume it’s probably imported. Enter Zia, a brand we were ecstatic to discover is a purely Saudi creation. The founder of Zia have put in the hard work first and foremost, letting the collections speak for themselves, and we have to admit this is something we hope other local entrepreneurs emulate. 50 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

“The gym is a place where women from all walks of life find a common ground. When we created Zia we wanted to reflect that sense of interconnectedness, so all our collections will represent or be inspired by cultures. Our first one is an ode to Africa, called the Tribal Tale. The second takes us back to our roots, Arabesque, and is inspired by Saudi and middle eastern culture.”

We wanted to create something that was made for women like us. We want women to feel stylish and comfortable. — Nada Al Saikhan

Interestingly enough, Zia has found a strong following in the US and Europe. In a matter of months, women across the globe will be doing their warrior poses and squats in Zia and hopefully find another reason to appreciate the aesthetics of the local culture. ziaonline

What intrigued us further is seeing the integration of culture in their designs, which was not a whimsical but rather a well thought of choice.

Love is in the Air(fryer)

It’s time to trick your sambosas and fries. We are HUGE fried food addicts. So we got an air fryer, a unique kitchen gadget that enables you to indulge your taste buds without wrecking your diet. The Air-fryer combines fast circulating hot air with a grill that cooks with a little bit of oil. Just a little oil and you are good to go. 58 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

Fish fingers are the perfect snack if you’re a seafood lover. You can perk these up with some garlic, spices and just a little brushing of oil. The fingers turn out crispy and can be enjoyed with your favorite dip.

2. SPICY CHICKEN DRUMSTICKS

Chicken drumsticks are our appetizer obsession. These drumsticks were done in 30 minutes, from start to finish. I was impressed with how evenly the chicken was fried, and how effortless it was.

Dunk these in guacamole for more flavor.

3. QUICK MIXED VEGETABLE TEMPURA This no-fuss vegetarian treat is great for nibbles, and is a delicious twist (fake, ahem!) on traditional tempura.

I tried it with zucchini, carrots, bean and cauliflower. It’s a great tummy pleaser.

MOJITOS Here's a fact: We love mojitos! Mojitos are the drinks that are always refreshing and punchy. And they're a one-way salsa dance to the Caribbean - who wouldn't want that in the summer? For a zesty fix, head on out to the decidedly artisan resto - Brick. If you’re looking for a bit of tooty fruity lovin’, have a taste of Applebee’s Strawberry mojito—complete with fresh strawberry chunks to boot. EAT CHIC Modern manners for dining out with style. By Nicola Sutcliff

64 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

With one of the fastest growing restaurant industries in the world, if there’s one thing we Riyadh dwellers know how to do, it’s eat out. Or do we? Do you make a beeline for the bread basket before the starter has arrived? When fine dining, is your attention really on your companions, or are you busy snap chatting the main course?

In an age where we tuck into take-away pizza in front of the TV and even ambassadors are found to favor a casual buffet over a sit-down dinner, does etiquette still matter? Nicolas thinks so. For her, it is all about communication, especially as our habits and interactions become more international. “Respecting certain rules is very important in helping people live together. It puts people at ease so relationships are smoother.” Nicolas’s goal is to help people succeed in their interactions, be they business-related or social, by avoiding faux pas and miscommunications. “If you are comfortable with the etiquette, you are more relaxed, more natural,” she explains, “you feel more confident so you can focus on the matter at hand. The other person sees someone pleasant who knows what they are doing. This gives a positive impression of you.” And of course, her French approach adds a certain, je ne sais quoi. “I always tell my clients that French

etiquette is not superior to any other, manners vary all over the world… But it is true that French culture is associated with rich history, and nowadays with fashion and perfume. France has a certain reputation for elegance.” Whether it’s her French flair or the natural warmth she exudes, Nicolas’s etiquette sessions are certainly enjoyable. Hosted at fine restaurants and private homes, learning is hands-on and delicious! From the right moment to take your napkin, to which way to scoop your soup, the number of rules involved in formal dining etiquette can seem overwhelming, but Nicolas insists “Etiquette should be very simple. It’s about how to treat people well.” “Remember that, honestly, you have not been invited to eat. You have been invited to speak, to meet people. How you hold your cutlery comes second. Focus on the conversation, and voilà!” Web: mannerstoday.com

Armelle’s Top 5 Tips For Elegant Dining French etiquette expert Armelle Nicolas is on a one-woman mission to add a little chic and class to our eating habits. With a decade of experience in tutoring highprofile clients from various countries like India, China, Thailand and Singapore, she is now bringing her unique coaching company, Manners Today, to Riyadh.

1. No slurping. Make as little noise as possible while eating. 2. Keep to your place. Avoid taking over the table with cutlery or elbows.

3. The table is for the food. That means phones and bags should be placed elsewhere.

5. Follow the leader. Remember, if in doubt, follow your host!

4. If you need to take an urgent call excuse yourself from the table.

WORK THAT CORE STAFF PHOTO/ ALZAHRA AL DAWOOD

Why you should take up Pilates this summer.

Fitness trends come and go but there are a few that become core in the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle, like Pilates. Its techniques are much older than the trend itself. Pilates was first created by Joseph Hubertus Pilates, who came up with the idea based on his knowledge of different fitness styles such as gymnastics and yoga, and developed exercises that would strengthen the mind and body through mental control, breathing and relaxation. Pilates focuses on the correct posture of the body and the core muscles of the abdomen, back and hips.

66 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

Benefits The benefits of this workout are very comprehensive and wonderful and include toning muscles, correcting bad posture, improving elasticity, coordination and getting rid of abdomen fat quickly.

Who’s Pilates for? Those who wish to tone, gain elasticity, lose fat and strengthen abdomen and, above all else, correct body posture. It’s especially useful for pregnant women.

Other benefits we should highlight are: • Practicing concentration on your movements and breathing control helps eliminate stress and improve your mood. • The deep breathing that you learn during practice will vastly improve your sleeping habits. • The more Pilates you do, the better posture you gain and the more confidence you have with your own body.

Classes

For any Pilates class, you need a well-lit and spacious room, comfortable clothes and a yoga mat. Some people like to wear socks but I personally feel more comfortable working out barefoot. The first few classes usually start with some gentle warming movements, breathing control exercises and correctly aligning your body. Then you’ll move onto the basic exercises that will be the core of every session, helping you gradually gain confidence and elasticity with each class.

In the first few classes, you may not have great flexibility, but don’t give up! Over time you’ll see progress and become much more aware of your body and happy with the changes that happen. As you progress, different accessories, advanced exercises and even cardio workouts will be introduced to the class to make it more intense and effective. Tame & Train Your Sleep This Vacation Season Master your body’s sleep-wake cycle during and after your vacation. By Safa Hassan

68 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

Vacations are when you have the most amazing time of your life, but they also bring the worst jetlag. If you are a frequent traveler to dramatically different time zones, you know how tough it can be to adjust your sleep cycle - it’s almost impossible. But, fear not. We are going to help you get over the jetlag and make the most of your holidays abroad.

1• Make a Plan

You need to get your body used to the time zone of the place that you’re traveling to a week before your flight. If you’re going east, try sleeping earlier. If you’re traveling west, sleep a little later. This will help you sync your bedtime to the timings of the new place. Leave your home with proper rest and enough energy.

2• The Flight Plan Riyadh’s location syncs us up most closely to the timings in Europe than any of the other regions. If you’re going to Asia for example, expect to be thrown into the future.

It’s recommended that you book a transit flight so that your body gets adjusted to the new time zone gradually. But, since that can be exhausting for some, you can train your body and mind during the lengthy flight hours. This will help you be functional when you land. Listen to your body and try to relax.

3• When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do

Ignore the time back in the country that you’re traveling from. Rescheduling your sleep cycle and getting used to new timings can take longer than expected. Reset your watch and plan according to the new hours; it’s a psychological trick. If you’re traveling to France, become French.

4• Be the Early Bird Who Gets the Worm

Arriving during the day time and too tired to enjoy the day? Take a 20-minutes powernap and go through your day activities. The powernaps are scientifically proven to make you more productive and make better decisions. (Don’t overdo this.) Limit long sleep hours to night.

5• Your Body’s Your Diamond

Don’t let it go through harsh conditions and ruin its precious cuts. Eat sensibly, stay hydrated, avoid caffeine during the evening hours (so that it doesn’t mess up with your sleep), listen to nature sounds to relax and sleep sooner and take a hot bath before bedtime to make you sleepy.

If you’re a frequent flyer, we suggest that you see your physician who can provide you with professional advice on sleep medicine. This water body is actually a creek that brings in water from the Red Sea, and this saves the water from going stale. You don’t need to travel by the coastal road to reach this part of corniche, it is actually located further inland in the western part of Jeddah. With a little searching you’ll find it near the famous fish market.

DARAT SAFEYA BINZAGR GALLERY

Jeddah’s art scene is brimming and to understand the art scene there is no better place to start than Darat Safeya Binzagr. The gallery mainly contains works by Saudi Arabian artist Safeya Binzagr, who is one of the most well-known faces in Jeddah’s art scene. Binzagr was the first woman to hold an art exhibition in Saudi Arabia in the 70s. Her artwork largely captures the rich cultural traditions of the Hejaz. COORDINATES 21.509955, 39.180917

KHUZAM PALACE GATE

The massive gate of King Abdulaziz’s palace gives an idea of what the entire complex must have looked like. Today, not much of the actual palace remains, however, the gate survives as Khozam Palace’s most prominent remnant. The architectural style of the gate clearly seems to have a Moorish influence, however, the relief work carries a Hejazi touch. The gate was even on Saudi Arabia’s currency note in the 50s. BUHAIRAT CITY Perched on a small hill some 40 km away from Jeddah, this one of the last few remaining Ottoman forts in the country. Usfan fort eludes an enigmatic beauty that is augmented by the dramatic valley that it sits in. It served as a caravanserai for pilgrims coming from the North for their annual pilgrimage as it was built on the route between Makkah and Madinah. Much of the fort’s fortified ramparts on the façade do remain intact to this day. Connected by the multilane JeddahUsfan road, the well-accessible fort is a must-visit for history aficionados. COORDINATES 21.916323, 39.339792

Constructed on reclaimed land that could be seen from miles above, it is believed by many that Buhairat city is the precursor to other ambitious projects like Durrat Al Uroos and the Palm Islands in Dubai. However, Buhairat never managed to achieve even half the fame of its popular counterparts. The layout of the residential colony

carries the shape of a leaf in its center that has numerous fronds protruding from the adjacent coast forming a breakwater. Today, though some parts of it still remain under construction it does, however, look like an idyllic mini-city with its American-style villas that have seawater passing by them in the form of canals. THE BEACH LIFE! You have to check out Jubai's booming beach scene. By Afifa Quraishi

I’m just going to go ahead and say it: Jubail is the Malibu of Saudi Arabia. This city offers the country’s best coastlines overlooking the Arabian Gulf, along with a relaxed, ambiance that makes it deserving of being called a beach city. The absence of strong sea currents make the beaches suitable for swimming and other water sports such as sailing, scuba diving, windsurfing and fishing. All of the beaches and parks are well-maintained and staffed by 82 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2017

lifeguards, making the beaches safe for swimming. Jubail's beaches boast blue waters, powdery white sands, vast green spaces, various children’s activities, mosques, cafes and restaurants and an overall feeling of happy summer vibes. While there are a few restaurants serving local delicacies, most of the famous fast food chains and fine dining restaurants are situated around the beaches.

Nakheel Beach

The lush greenery and sparkling white sand of Nakheel Beach make this place an excellent spot to swim, siesta and have a tasty barbecue. It’s equipped with basketball courts, clean toilets, and changing rooms. A colorful flower festival held every year turns it into one big, beautiful flower bouquet. Location: Rd. 6 and Rd. 101, Al Khalij Dist., Jubail

Darin Beach

Darin Beach is famous for its picturesque sunsets and entertaining children’s area, making it especially popular among families within the city and beyond. The best times to visit are evenings; catch a glimpse of the beautiful sunset while avoiding the heat. Location: Darin Dist., Jubail

Fanateer Beach

Close your eyes and picture this: A vast stretch of palm trees swaying over a clear blue beach, lots of sunshine and endless greenery. Now open your eyes and imagine you could have that in Saudi. Yes, that’s possible; you just need to see it to believe it! Fanateer Beach, located in the Hijaz District, has something for everyone. Water skiing, fishing, boating and other water sports competitions in addition to seasonal festivals are held here. Meanwhile, fitness enthusiasts will love the vast spaces and walkways

to workout, walk, jog, run and cycle throughout. There’s even a special area allocated for children with special needs that includes various games and special calisthenics devices designed to develop their skills and strengthen their bodies. The area is equipped with guiding boards, glider umbrellas, rubber floors and borders to support and protect children while playing. Location: Fahad Rd. and Dhahran Rd., Hijaz Dist., Jubail Photographer: Abdulrhman Nasser Abanmi is a photographer and visual storyteller currently living in Jubail. Web: flickr.com/photos/bmbobmbo
