AWJ EVENTS:
Unlocking Riyadh's Entertainment Scene
ISSUE 60 FEBRUARY 2018
FROM THE EDITOR
Editor-in-Chief Enas Hashani Managing Director Maria Mahdaly Executive Editor Bassma Al Toaimi
GET CREATIVE! Riyadh is boring? No it’s not. You just don’t know Riyadhis that well. Preparing this issue brought us back to when we first launched the magazine in 2013. There were tons of stories we could do but, at the time, we were unsure whether people would be okay with us featuring them. Because that’s the thing about Riyadh, it’s not that we were boring then and now all of a sudden we’re a fun city. We’ve always been fun, we just didn’t like talking about it. Flash forward to 2018 and we’re a capital being primed as the tipping point of change in here. Mainstream entertainment is becoming available alongside previously underground scenes that are now rising to the surface. We have filmmakers who are making their names abroad seeing the possibility of having their work screened in their hometowns. People like Maqam are doing their part to give musicians their chance to shine on stage. We have Awj Events who are on a mission to let Saudi Arabia experience fun in a way that is both unique and universal. These are all local talents who were just waiting for their moment, and indeed their moment has come to be recognized.

THUMBS DOWN TO MESSY ADVENTURERS
The Edge of the World is not your bedroom, the desert is not your kitchen, the Heet cave is definitely not your bathroom, the outdoors is not your trash can. Yes, it would be great to have bins in these areas, but if there aren’t any, then haul your garbage with you when you leave. If we want pretty things, Riyadhis, we have to know how to take care of them. Another man’s trash, is yours too if you choose to ignore it. This is your city, take responsibility.
THUMBS UP HERE’S A GOOD WAY TO BE AWARE OF YOUR WEIGHT Prince Sultan University’s and King Fahad Medical City’s walkway has been equipped with paid weighing machines. You can use it after inserting the mentioned amount of money and it’ll tell you your weight. Seems to be a good way to keep up with your new year’s resolution.
APP NEWS: SAUDI VAT APP The General Authority for Zakat and Tax has created an app that provides users with tax-related services. It’s a tool that helps in assisting entities to calculate the Value Added Tax. Using the VAT registration number or CR and QR scan, you can check the VAT registration of entities. This app also enables you to report any VAT violations through the app.
SHARING THE WARMTH A winter drive campaign was organized by the female students of Prince Sultan University to help the less fortunate who cannot afford to buy warm clothes. The students collected gently used winter essentials such as coats, scarves, blankets etc. After the collection period, the donated clothes were initially sorted for distribution among the less fortunate. A similar initiative was taken by a mysterious Riyadhi who hung brand new blankets on trees in an attempt to help the needy.

GOAL!
Die-Hard Female Football Fans Take Riyadh Sports Stadium by Storm Thousands of cheering and flag-waving female football fans took King Fahd International Stadium by a storm on January 13 to support their favorite team in the professional league game that pitted Al-Hilal against Al-Ittihad, the first ever Saudi ‘Classico’ game of top teams attended by women in the Kingdom’s history. Scores of women in small and big groups waved Al-Ittihad’s yellow and black banners or Al-Hilal’s blue and white flags, lifting their arms in the air each time it looked a goal was in progress. The women joined other family members in enthusiastically singing their team anthems intermittently. The spirited game between two of the country’s top football clubs ended in a 1-1 draw. Teams of female ushers, wearing blue tops over their black abayas, guided the women and other family members to their seats in special sections of the stadium. According to the organizers, more than 7,000 seats were allocated for women in the stadium that has a capacity of over 68,000. “I am extremely glad to be here where the history 10 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2018

Attending sports matches is not just an opportunity for women to show their support to their teams but also to be part of the historical social reforms lead by HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman,” said Manal Al Buraik, Saudi Entrepreneur, 40. Outside the stadium, there was a festive atmosphere as women painted hearts on the faces of children with the colours of their favorite teams, among other activities organised by the General Sports Authority and the sports federation headed by Princess Reema Bint Bandar, who was also in attendance.

In October of last year, the General Sports Authority (GSA) issued a decision that as of early 2018 the three stadiums, previously male-only facilities, will be prepared to be ready for families, including allocation of special places for seating and entrances. “I was worried about attending a football match because I didn’t know how things going to be organized,” said Roaa Al Harbi, a law student, 23. “Now, I feel very optimistic about the upcoming sports events. I can attend matches and have fun at the same. Also, I have discovered that it’s not just a match but it’s an entertainment experience as well.” “A great development has taken place in our country. AWJ EVENTS ENTERTAINMENT WEAVERS A sit-down with AWJ Events, crafters of new experiences. By Jou Pabalate
Their interactive theater caught our attention so we just had to find out who they were. The team behind AWJ are young entrepreneurs out to change the game side by side big players in the entertainment industry. And you know what we think? They’ll be winning. Arwa
Can you tell us about yourselves?
STAFF PHOTO/NAWAF AL FARRAJ
We are four co-founders Abdulrahman, Abdulaziz, Jawaher and Arwa. It all started when we were in Alfaisal University in Riyadh. Each one of us joined a student committee where we all held lead roles and responsibilities. We were planning and executing various events on and off the campus throughout our years studying in the university. This experience is what brought the four of us together. We all held a great passion to implement our ideas to reality and we wanted to continue in the event planning field.
What inspired you to create AWJ Events?
The impact of the events we held on the community, we wanted to continue delivering a new and worthwhile experience to the audience.
Our ambition is to help reshape the concept of entertainment in the Kingdom. We hope to add more value to the world of event planning by creating interactive experiences that understand the culture and interests of our audience. As for the name “Awj”; it is an Arabic word that means “the peak”, or “the highest point”. We wanted the company to hold a name from our first language this is still relatable with our goals and vision.
How do you see the entertainment industry developing in the Kingdom? What are your challenges?
The entertainment industry has been increasing exponentially. Many entities are supporting and investing in the sector to bring more activities and means of entertainment from abroad. Other than that, there are numerous event planning companies and festivals being DESTINATIONKSA.COM 13
held. In very short months we are seeing so many events happening at the same time. And we do expect it to continue this way for the upcoming months. The challenge arising with having many events is that a lot of people have lost interest because of the repetitive concepts happening. Today competitors are not only other events, but any other form of entertainment one has at home. The current support we need may include a facilitator in the form of governmental entities. When implementing new ideas that have never happened in the Kingdom before, there are no clear processes for such types of events, so we had to take a rather difficult route and put more effort to receive legal licenses and governmental approvals. We also hope that more spaces for holding events will be made available. With the current increase in events, there are not enough spaces to support having them.
What expectations did you have in the beginning?
We were expecting the governmental process of the events approval is clear; and that there is support from some governmental entities, companies, and groups for our concept. Last, we thought that the people would be very excited for trying a new journey through our events.
14 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2018
The reality was, the licensing process wasn’t that clear and we had some issues. But we still got the got the support from some government entities, companies, and groups and they where excited about our concept. Lastly, the feedback of the people was amazing. They were excited, but we faced some problems in explaining this concept to people, and now we are planning to run an educational campaign to avoid this kind of issues.
What are some of the things you didn't quite anticipate as entrepreneurs?
First, we tried to take a new challenge and try a different route from others. But being unique costs a lot so we spent more time in explaining and educating people about what an “Interactive Theater is. Second, we avoided using any social media influencers to promote us and our services. We used other strategies to reach out the people such as word of mouth. Apparently our strategy works in a long-term campaigns and not the short ones. Also, we focused to include the youth as much as possible in all aspects of the events, so a lot of our stakeholders are from the youth. Web: awjevent.com
We hope to add more value to the world of event planning by creating interactive experiences that understand the culture and interests of our audience.

Tips on how to survive it By Maha Adham
16 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2018
With the current startup ecosystem, an entrepreneurship hype was developed. The word entrepreneur became viral and the number of local start-ups emerging is quite astonishing. How will you ensure your business sees it through the
woods? Being your own boss is great, but building a sustainable business is not easy, especially when the economic situation is difficult, competition is high, and the market is extremely demanding.

SET YOUR GOALS AND DEVISE A PLAN
SMART NETWORKING
You need to know where you are heading. When and how will you reach your goals. Track your progress and be aware of your environment – what will deviate you from reaching your goals? How will you manage challenges?
Be in the right place at the right time. Make an effort to introduce yourself to the right people, let them know what you can offer. Network with people who will benefit from your offering and also with people who may help your business grow.

KNOW THE FUNDAMENTALS
DO YOUR RESEARCH
What are your key performance indicators? For healthy business growth, you need to know your numbers. When will you break even? What are your customer acquisition costs? Growth rate? Expected revenue? Target market Percentage?
4 Here are some tips to take into consideration:
1 IF YOU ARE EMPLOYED
do not leave your job – yet! Bring your idea to life; once your startup is successfully growing and you can financially support yourself and your business, make the decision.
TIME MANAGEMENT IS CRITICAL TO SUCCESS FROM THE OUTSET
Your offering needs to be launched at the right time, your business operations need to eliminate waste, and you must be able to make decisions fast. Ultimately, opportunities will be lost if this is not mastered. Moreover, your reputation will be impacted once your business is up and running. You need to be a trustworthy entrepreneur and so does your brand.
Make sure there is place for your startup in the market. Validate your value proposition – will the target market truly benefit from your offering? If this cannot be validated, reconsider your idea. Startup is only a phase. Set your goals, meet them, and move to the next level. Despite the hype, it is not an easy journey. Be smart in the decisions you make, believe in yourself, and stand strong through the rough times. Riyadh can offer you so much to support you through the startup phase. Look for accelerators and/ or mentors, and attend online courses and startup events. Most of all, take care of yourself, to be able to take care of your business and enjoy the journey.

Apart from being a filmmaker and, at some point, an interior designer, she is also a member of the academe, teaching and writing in the field of media studies, interactive narratives, and adventure games. A cheerful smile spread across Taufiq’s face as I asked him about his journey. He surprised me by saying he was once a field engineer. He didn’t enjoy his career then but he had learned a lot about problemsolving from it, which he now applies to his practical life. Through the journey of his life – working hard to pay the tuition fees, and managing his ADHD – football was always a stress-buster.
Becoming an athlete and a freestyle footballer was a leap of faith. — Taufiq Bamatraf
He started freestyle football in 2006 after being inspired by Soufiane Touzani’s videos, and learned from the same. Eventually, he decided to take a leap of faith; he quit his job to remain dedicated to his passion. In 2008, the Red Bull Street Style was held; Taufiq was mesmerized by the freestyle football talents. Deep down, he knew that Riyadh had an equally talented community. Determined to bring Red Bull to Riyadh, he knew he needed to build up
a community of freestylers to attract their attention. After searching every nook and corner of the city, Taufiq formed Riyadh’s first freestyle football group. Through the same, he met one of his role models, Salim Altheeb. Taufiq’s hard work wasn’t ignored, and in 2010, Red Bull finally agreed to host their first event in KSA. Taufiq and his friends used to train in parks, mall’s parking lot, and the streets; there was never a permanent place where they could practice, until Fitness First provided them a space in their studio. After noticing Taufiq’s talent and his dedication to becoming an athlete, Fitness First offered him to become the brand ambassador of the gym. He was also one of the most motivational speakers at TEDx in Riyadh. taufiqstyler Taufiq Bamatraf

Abdullah Omar Ahmad, Mohammed Al-shuwaier, Mnsour Al-dowais, Abdullmjeed Al-suwailem, Abdullah Al-harbi, Dawood Al-Ghanim, Naif Bahadi are six guys determined to change the way the society thinks through their performances. They call themselves ‘3.Talents’ because their group comprises of skaters, BMX riders, and football freestylers. Due to a lack of professionals in the city, these guys had to learn from YouTube videos. That’s where they found their role model, Matthias Dandois, a BMX rider.
They state that the scene for street performers was very different in the past. Back then, no one paid attention to what they did and they weren't supported as much. But now, a growing number of people offer a good shoulder and are a great audience. 3.Talents have performed in Dubai and Bahrain, and wish to leave their skid marks all around the world. 3.talents
3.Talents combines their individual passions to create an unforgettable performance for their followers. They don’t just perform stunts, they tell a story through it. “Before we perform, we pay attention to the theme of the event; based on that, we write a story, compose a remix of different songs to suit our performance, and dance our stunts through it,” says Abood. One of the members, Naif beatboxes, too. They want to prove to society that you don’t need a full-time behind-the-desk job to make a living; “I quit my job to train and become a professional skater,” said Naif, “it was the best decision ever.” They get paid to perform in major events around the city and are satisfied with what they earn.

Artducate
Unable to find a suitable place where her children could channel and develop their creativity, Sidra Mohammad, a dedicated mother, launched Artducate in January 2016. She designed Artducate to help stimulate both sides of the brain – improving children's sensory and motor skills, while also exercising their language and critical thinking abilities. To achieve its goal of making learning fun, Artducate blends education into stories, craft, activities, and science experiments. Children first explore an educational topic through traditional learning methods, such as group discussions and stories. Then they reinforce the subject matter through creative means such as painting, clay modeling, stitching, sculpting or cooking. Besides educational workshops, Artducate also organizes activities like outdoor art, Zumba for kids, and movie nights. ART
A Conversation With
ALANOOD AL SULBI … ON ART AND DOING WHAT YOU LOVE. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I have a bachelor's degree in Marketing from Dammam University, but I have always enjoyed the arts. I’ve worked here and there, but I recently resigned, and this gave me more time to focus on my art. It’s what I truly enjoy. I consider my art to be different, emotional as well.
When did you first discover that painting is what you wanted to do?
It was a hobby of mine ever since I was young, so it came out naturally. I was in a special Arts College at Shelton High School back in the UK, where we worked on Art-related projects, and that’s when I first started showing people my work.
I absolutely have to listen to music, perhaps the type of music depends on my mood that day. Coffee, of course is a must to me. I start getting creative, and mostly enjoy painting on late nights, sometimes early mornings.
What’s your favorite piece that you have created? A four-piece “mix and match” portrait painting that I have 32 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2018

What kind of creative routines do you have?
created, it’s like a puzzle. I can match it however I like. Personally, I get bored easily and that’s why I often like to switch up my environment, so I truly enjoyed creating this piece.
What inspires you?
It depends. Since I have free time now, I decided to start planting, and I chose to plant a sunflower. The anticipation and the excitement that comes along with waiting for it to grow was inspiring to me. I noticed that the sunflower indirectly affected me, since I realized that most of the paintings that I did during that period of time were
in yellow, the color of a sunflower. Everything can inspire me, in a way.
What’s the best advice you have ever received?
Sometimes you can get an advice, without someone saying it directly to you. But something that I have always heard, and truly believe in is: be different and do something that’s unique to you. For example, my advice to someone would be finding something that you love, and try doing it. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have to achieve a certain goal, but at least enjoy doing it.
Who are some of your favorite artists?
Picasso, of course. Iraqi Artist Nabeel Ali, I love his style and drawings. Also Najla Abdullah, I’m such a big fan of her work.
If your closest friends and loved ones were to describe you in three words, what would they be? I don’t usually like to talk about myself, but my loved ones will usually say that I’m crazy. Of course, it could be positive or negative sometimes (laughs), different or unique, and beautiful. al3nood_a_s

MAQAM Excavating the Kingdom’s underground music scene. By Jou Pabalate
It’s hard to imagine how a couple of years ago, the strum of a guitar would have made some folks a little uneasy in the city. Nowadays, such anxiety in appreciating music in public has turned into excitement. Events today include musicians, and it’s no longer a surprise to enter a restaurant with a constant playlist running on the background. A music community has always existed in the city, albeit, they kept their amps low
and their jams underground. With the paradigm shifting, people are now trying to find these talents and put them center stage, where they belong. Creating an ecosystem for musicians and with that, build a local music industry is where Maqam comes in. Jamal Bishri and Salah Alazhari, each carrying their guitars entered our office with huge grins on their faces. Once we were done exchanging pleasantries, I

asked them why they were in such a good mood: “People kept asking us while we were walking where we’ll be playing. They wanted us to play for them,” Jamal said. “These things show us we’re right on time, people are ready, in fact, they want music in Riyadh,” added Salah. Jamal has been a guitarist for 12 years, an architecture student, and a budding serial entrepreneur. Salah on the other hand has a decade of experience under his belt as a guitarist. He was part of a band called, “Bear and the Happy”, a project manager by education, and an aspiring sound engineer. Together, these 24-year-olds founded Maqam (musical scale in arabic), a hub for anything music related in the Kingdom.
“Through Maqam, we help teachers find students (and vice versa) wanting to learn how to play an instrument. We connect musicians with each other, and with people/events trying to find professional performers. We’ve also offered some basic recording workshops,” said Salah, who is currently working full-time on Maqam. “Our experience as musicians helped in sourcing fellow musicians, as well as determine the readiness of one artist from another. Sometimes it’s about chemistry too, you can jam perfectly with one group and totally be out of sync with another,” said Jamal when asked how they built their growing roster of talents. “We’re just in the beginning of our journey, our dream is to create a music scene.”
According to Jamal and Salah, one of the challenges they’ve had is securing venues for jam sessions as well as the music classes. “This is one of the things we are trying to fix, because eventually, we would also want to provide musicians with sound studios, and be able to connect them to other professionals who can help them with their projects.” Musicians and Music Enthusiasts, connect with them now: Web: maqam-music.com Email: info@maqam-music.com
There’s no doubt that Maqam is filling a gap in the music industry, providing a platform for indie artists and performers, to create a community that no longer lurks in the shadows but can claim their much deserved spotlight.

A CONVERSATION WITH
NISREEN GHANDOURAH Author of Al Nahr Al Thalith By Sumaiyya Naseem

bic by John Williams (Ara r) translation, Dar Atha
Nisreen Ghandourah was a reader long before she published her own novel. As a child, the cabinets filled with books at home fascinated her, and the earliest seeds of writing were sowed while listening to her father read the stories in the Qur’an.
There’s so much beauty in the storytelling. Each chapter and section is written for a particular audience. The Qur’an taught me the importance of knowing your audience, and finding the right point of view and the reason you’re telling the story. — Nisreen Ghandourah
The metaphysical elements in the Qur’an fed her imagination and inspired her. A strong sense of language made her stand out in high school, and it was then that she realized she had a unique voice in writing. She believes that it’s important 36 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2018
to discover one’s creative identity, saying, “Writing takes hard work. Once you know your voice you can build it.” The Saudi writer was only 22 when she completed her debut, Al Nahr Al Thalith (The Third River). Soon after graduating from Dar Al Hekma University in 2005, she dedicated her time and efforts to writing a story about the Iraq war of 2003. It’s been a decade since her debut was published, and since that time she has established herself as a promising voice from Saudi Arabia. It was after the publication of her debut that Ghandourah evolved into a well-known and respected writer. Under the wing of her publisher, she was able to connect with readers at book fairs and literary events, the most recent being the International Jeddah Book Fair. She dedicated the next few years to learning more about her craft. “I understood that any work could be better, so I took creative writing courses. There are hundreds of references on writing, but I wanted to be around likeminded people who are passionate about stories.” The courses she took were from City University, London School of Journalism, and Oxford University. Armed with an eye for introspection, she began revisiting her favorite Arabic novels to analyze and explore what made a story or character interesting. In the previous year, she used Instagram as a platform
to share her thoughts on the books she’s been reading. Ghandourah doesn’t believe in the concept of star ratings, “I prefer appreciating books for their quality, even if they don’t match my taste. I look at the effort, idea, creative style and relevance.” In her reviews, she introduces the plot of the book, gives her opinion and highlights the main takeaways. Ghandourah teamed up with Jeddah Reads to give a talk on Naguib Mahfouz, titled Respected Sir, after one of her favorite novels by the late author. It was a chance for her to dig deeper and introduce local readers to the brilliance of the writer and how he captured an era of Egypt through literature. She feels it’s important to have such literary discussions in Jeddah, and more options for buying books. “We need libraries or literary clubs where people can get together to discuss books. When I was in my teenage years we had a problem with supply, but we can shop online now.” While collections in local bookstores are still quite limited, websites like Jamalon and Book Depository are good options for bookworms. Nisreen Ghandourah is currently writing her second novel, which is set in Saudi Arabia. The story follows a set of characters who were raised in Saudi in the 80s. “The main character is a horse trainer; I was inspired by the beautiful description of horses in classical Arabic poetry.”
Available on jamalon.com
Al Nahr Al Thalith follows three journalists on a mission to cover the untold stories of the war in Iraq. Ghandourah took up the task of conducting intensive research through documentaries, books, interviews, and diaries to expand her sense of Iraqi culture and society. Her novel shows that life goes on, but it’s up to people in a crisis to either recover or collapse. “I wanted to highlight the reality of war and its destruction of human legacy. Through my characters I portrayed how it affects people on a social and psychological level. War doesn’t solve problems, it just makes people scared of each other.”

While they do have their own advantages, at some point, we realized that old is gold. And what could be better than the beauty tips passed down by our wise grandmas? Treat pimples with turmeric. Turmeric has antiinflammatory and antimicrobial properties that help combat acne. Use toothpaste to treat sunburn. Toothpaste helps sooth the burnt region. Application: Rub toothpaste on the affected region and wash it off after it dries up.
Dairam sticks (pieces of the bark of Dairam tree)
Was and is still used to whiten the teeth, treat bad breath, and add a brown tint on lips.
Dairam is available in bundles of sticks. MOST IMPORTANTLY, TO LOOK AND FEELGOOD, SIMPLY SMILE.
Go ginger using henna! Grannies don’t like using the harsh hair colors to dye their hair or hide the whites. Plus, it’s all natural, and strengthens and conditions your hair. Application: Combine powdered henna with warm water (you can replace water with black tea or coffee). Stir till the paste resembles the consistency of mashed potatoes. Add more water if you face difficulty applying it.
Mushat powder A combination of herbs, such as, cardamom, rosemary, chamomile, sandalwood, and similar herbs of medicinal quality – is used on hair. It strengthens hair; prevents dandruff and the growth of fungi, moisturizes, and gives your hair a lustrous look. Application: Add this powder in water and boil for a while. Transfer this solution in a sprayer and spray it on your hair. Make sure your hair and scalp are drenched in it. Let it sit for an hour, and then wash your hair with water and shampoo.

Before KiraKira, there was “ ” [tir tir, Saudi slang for sequins]. And before red carpet fashion in Hollywood, there was Thursday night in Saudi Arabia.
For decades, Arabs have always been unapologetically overdressed. Call it #BeduFab or the by-product of a decadent lifestyle, but we‘ve always possessed a magpielike attention to all things Swarovski, and today, unfortunately, that obsession has gone to our heads – literally (Huda Beauty highlighters, anyone?). Our affinity of all things gaudy has allowed us to fill the void in the
international fashion scene, which was left by its current penchant for street style minimalism, a lethargic economy, and most recently, the tainted headliner in evening wear, Marchesa (thank you, Harvey Weinstein)! Nowadays, it’s common to see A-list celebrities struggling to announce the Arab name of who they are wearing. Red carpet fashion is just one way Arab designers are taking over the fashion industry.

Saudi Sushi Chef, Blogger, and Entrepreneur
Her love for food goes way beyond the simple culinary arts. Here’s everything you need to know about Khulood Olaqi, one of the city’s very first Saudi female sushi chef. 50 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2018
How did you start?
As a child, I was passionate about cooking. I used to cook whenever I had the chance. My passion got interrupted when I started university. I was studying health education; the hectic study-schedule made it difficult to keep up with cooking. By the end of the third semester, I made up my mind to start a small cooking business alongside my studies. I was looking for a particular gastronomy to specialize in, and my mum suggested Japanese cuisine. With the help of relatives and friends, this hobby became my life and Oishii Sushi was born. We started as an in-home catering business, and are soon going to open our first restaurant in the city.
That was a big shift, from health education studying health education as it provided me with a better to becoming a chef; understanding of nutrition. how did you deal with it? Have you been to a It was not an easy decision. culinary school? I was unable to deal with the increasing orders and load of assignments. During my internship, I grew tired of the everyday monotonous schedule of life: get up, go to the hospital, do the same thing over and over again. Don’t get me wrong, I loved helping patients, but my life felt dull, I wasn’t being myself. Once my internship was completed, I changed my career. I became a chef and life became exciting; I taught my staff how to cook and learned something new every day. I don’t regret
I attended Le Cordon Bleu in London, where I learned cuisine techniques. Then, I attended the School of Wok, in London, where I sharpened my sushi and my knife skills. In 2014, I took up a course at the Tokyo Sushi Academy in Singapore. These courses taught me a lot. I also learned how to make vegan food more appetizing and how to cook steak. I wanted to explore everything, while memorizing the basics and sharpening my cooking skills.
Your Instagram states that you’re a food blogger, as well. Can you tell us about that? I realized that my Snapchat followers loved the cookingtutorials that I used to post. It helped me come up with the idea to start posting recipes on Instagram. It’s a lot better than Snapchat because people can save these recipes easily. After receiving good feedback, I continued blogging about food. Lately, I’ve been developing menus for restaurants and cafes. So, I’m a menu developer, as well. Khuloodolaqi

Riyadh’s Latest Food Trends The making of legends, fads, and flavors our palates wish to forget. Instagram -ready Unicorns
Contoured waffles, doughnuts posing on top of shakes, glittered dessertscapes, and yes, unicorn inspired drinks—Riyadh rode the instragram foofie (food selfie) trend like no one’s business. Don’t get us wrong, we like pretty food, for as long as it doesn’t compromise taste. Sadly, we’d have to say there were more misses than hits when it came to crazy concoctions last year, so this year, folks, let’s try to master the basics. Gotta have ‘em all, Poké Bowl First thing first, poke bowls are not from Japan they hail from sunny Hawaii. It’s not a new hipster invention, poké (pronounced as Poh-Keh) has been around for ages and part of the indigenous culinary culture of Hawaiians. In Riyadh, we don’t have poké specific places yet so restaurants, most of them Japanese, have taken it upon themselves to give their deconstructed sushi take on this dish. Honestly, we don’t mind, they’re tasty but we would love to someday taste an authentic version just for comparison. Hits: Mee So Hungry, Sushi Counter, Circle Café DESTINATIONKSA.COM 53
Where are all the Good Ramen? This culinary import is just one of Japan’s brilliant culinary creations. Ramen when done properly is soulful. Veganism and Patties from Outer Space
Healthy living isn’t a fad, it’s a lifestyle and we’re all for it. With fitness becoming mainstream, came the rise of popularity and interest in Veganism. Cool so far. When you have demand, out comes restaurants and establishments wanting to provide. Burger joints started offering vegan options, some fared well, while others tasted like Martian dirt specimens we accidentally swallowed, that would eventually lead to our mutation. Dear restaurants, yes, if you can’t beat them, join them, but if you do, do it right. Who did it right? Urth Caffe, try their vegan pizza.

HITTING TARGETS WITH THE
SAUDI ARCHERY FEDERATION
A federation determined to sharpen its arrows and make its mark. Archery has been part of world history since the stone age. The use of bow and arrow as a means of hunting and warfare dates back to 200 BC. As a sport however, it was introduced in the 1904 Summer Olympic games. Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) has even recommended archery, or more broadly, shooting as one of the sports we should teach our youth. Hence, a bow and arrow, whether in a historical context or through pop culture, is something we have at some point seen. Being ingrained in the culture, archery is a sport Saudis can participate in and excel. Today, a separate federation has been established for the sport under the General Sports Authority. 56 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2018
At the helm of the revived passion for the sport is Bandar Al Safer, Chairman of the Saudi Arabian Archery Federation. Their mission is to lay down the strategy and foundations to create a strong archery culture in the Kingdom. “It is the right time to shift people’s attention towards other sports other than football,” said Al Safer. “We
have put together a strategic plan for the next four years, and in the short amount of time, you will see that we’re off to a very good start.” “One of our main goals for the next four years is to have Saudi Arabia rank amongst the top 25 in the world. To achieve this, the federation sees the need to increase the number of participants and
athletes, increase the number of training facilities, invest in improving the technical skills of its archers, create a financial strategy that would sustain and fund the federation, and lastly, host world championships in the Kingdom,” shared Al Safer. In just a matter of months, SAAF is well on its way to succeeding, from ranking 75, we are now number 38. Equally astounding is that they’ve
increased the participants from 50 to 500. This exponential increase is partly due to the federation opening the sport to female archers. They’ve also partnered up with educational institutions and have plans to do marketing campaigns to further encourage the public to learn about archery.

AT DIPLOMATIC QUARTERS A hidden gem for fitness lovers and sunset seekers.
Winter in Riyadh is considered to be the best time for outdoor adventures and desert getaways. However, if you want to skip the bumpy offroad car ride or would simply want to take in some fresh air without leaving the confines of the city, all you really have to do is find your way into the Diplomatic Quarters (DQ). Nestled within the DQ’s confines are walk trails that were cleverly designed to blend with its original topography. The paths, which 58 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2018
are a mix of rocky terrains and dirt roads make up a 15-kilometer trail altogether, are interconnected through public parks that are scattered around its perimeter. The trails are designed in a way that accommodates Riyadhis of all fitness levels. For those wanting to just have stroll and be closer to nature, you can take the shorter route starting at Roundabout 8 and exit at Tuwaiq Palace—this offers breathtaking views of the sunrise and sunset, Wadi
Hanifa’s Bridge, and a lovely range of of faunas and birds to marvel at. For more seasoned runners or those who want to take their fitness goals outdoors, the trails have enough elevations and hills to challenge yourself on. Mix up your training by doing your runs on the rocky terrains on one session and moving onto the pavements. Families are also welcome on the trail and the parks are perfect for kids to run around
DR’S TRAIL REMINDERS: 1. Best to enter the DQ on Weekdays, early mornings or before 7pm. The security can be rather tight and some days you can be refused entry as a security countermeasure. 2. Stay hydrated and put on some sunscreen, winter sunburn is real.
and release their energy. Al Yamama Gardens, one of the biggest in the DQ and can be found along Heraa St., has multiple playgrounds and picnic spots. It’s also common to find families and folks walking their dogs in the park, so if you want to make it an exercise for you and your furry pal, this is the place. The Diplomatic Quarters is not limited to on-foot activities, we have seen Riyadhis cycling on the trails, usually starting at Wadi Hanifah and
accessing the DQ through the southern gate. There are also open courts you can use for volleyball and football. If you go on the portion of the trail starting from Roundabout 1 and all the way to the south gate, you will find several bodyweight and exercise machines, free for all. The shorter trails will take about 45 minutes of walking, the entire 15 kilometers about 2-3 hours. You can exit the trails anytime through any of the parks.
3. Do not litter, I will personally run after you and make you throw your trash in the bin. There are trash cans all throughout, you have no excuse. 4. Be Nice. There’s a community vibe here and folks are usually on a sunny disposition, expect to exchange pleasantries with fellow hikers. 5. Your kid is not Banksy. Even if he or she was, it’s still not right to vandalize public spaces. I can’t believe I have to write this but apparently I do.

that we got to experience authentic provincial French hospitality. We were welcomed by the sight of cows grazing across green grass fields, the overcast above us warned of rain fall at any given time. Its soil is rich and
This entails ascribing the level of authenticity and approved procedures in order to maintain the established reputation of a region in terms of its products in the marketplace. Our discovery trip to Normandy was followed by two refreshing days of exploring the key places in Brittany. We learned about terroir, a set of three natural factors (soil, topography, and climate) that impart certain qualities to the produce grown in the region. When cows graze on the special flora, the cheese that is later produced from the milk reflects the quality of the terroir. Gaec de Toul Manac’h Farm
fertile, the region has mild weather throughout the year, and if you pair that with their strong producer culture that has been preserved and mastered throughout centuries; you have the best conditions to produce excellent milk and thereby, exceptional cream, butter, and other dairy ingredients. A visit to their factory opened our eyes to the rigorous process of milk production. The cooperative ensures that it meets POD (Protected Origin of Designation) standards.
In Brittany, we also visited GAEC de Toul Manac’h, a Paysan Breton farm, where we explored the milk-production units and the special care that goes into animal welfare. To ensure maximum comfort for the animals, the farm we visited was equipped with massage appliances for the cows. They also had music in the stables since cows produce more milk while listening to music. To further provide comfort to the animals, the farm incorporated automatic machines that milked the cows at their convenience. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 63
Interestingly, Brittany is one of the two milk-producing regions that has ideal climate for farming. In fact, it is the most important milk-producing region in France. The farms in Britanny are largely familyrun, where skills are passed down from one generation to the next. The informative trip to Brittany was followed by a sweet gastronomic adventure. We headed towards Paris, fashion capital and equally, haute dessert central. We witnessed and tasted how French cream are artfully incorporated to transform desserts. 64 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2018

Our most memorable stop was at the Un Dimanche a Paris, a patisserie where its renowned executive pastry chef Nicolas Bacheyre held a unique workshop focusing the fine qualities of this famous ingredient. For a couple of hours, the scent of vanilla and oven fresh baked goods marveled our sense. We were captivated by the skillful manipulation of French cream, known for its ability to withstand rigorous culinary application, to create velvety whitescapes and fluffy toppings. The flavors beautifully matched the pristine aesthetics, delicately balanced and textured.

We went back to Saudi Arabia with a newfound appreciation of French creams (President, Elle & Vire, Paysan Breton, Isigny Ste Mere) and other French products with the PDO seal on the supermarket shelves. For Destination, a trip to the Edge of the World has become an annual tradition. The year doesn’t seem complete without a day spent watching the sunset atop one of its famous cliffs.
Our journey started with a quick trip to Bujairy, where we got to listen to a little bit of history about Riyadh and the makings of this particular UNESCO heritage site. It was a good way to get into a cultural mindset before heading out to the Edge of the world. We braved the off beaten tracks in style, on-board black Escalades equipped with Wifi and driven by professional drivers from the hotel. After a couple of hours, we reached our destination and were greeted by the gentlemen of Four Seasons, gahwa and finjan in hand. As we looked
over the horizon, we see the silhouette of a tent being built on the topmost cliff, where we would later on have lunch. The sound of an engine caught our attention, and right at that moment we were told that we will have an experience of a lifetime—flying over the edge on a microlight aircraft. We can attest that a bird’s eye view of the Edge of the World will leave you in awe. The wind swept desertscapes contrasting with seemingly endless blue skies is breathtaking. We had the chance to reflect on this bucketlist moment over the
sumptuous lunch that ensued after. Executive Chef Ahmed prepared for us an authentic Najdi feast with a signature Four Seasons twist. We indulged in Saudi classics, like ghorsan, kabsa, jareesh, and Hinaini. But also, mixed grill delights (you must try the lamb chops) and smores made for a wonderful hearty meal. Our day ends with the sun preparing to sleep on the horizon, our tour guide reveling us with stories of Bedouins and natural wonders. Eventually it’s time to leave, and we make our way back to urbanity. Tel: +966-11-2115888 DESTINATIONKSA.COM 71

BEIT KAKI A Traditional Hijazi Summer Home
COURTESY PHOTO/ DILMUNICOUPLE.COM
By Mohammed Mirza
72 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2018
Hijaz has historically been a place where trader and merchant families were the richest. As the region was at the crossroads of many trade routes, it was these families who made huge profits from the lucrative trade. These families normally had summer homes in Taif, where they would head in order to escape the blistering heat of the Arabian summer. The city was like an unofficial summer capital of the country back in the day. The mansions these families made set the tone for the vernacular architecture of the region. One such is the summer home of the Kaki family called Beit Kaki.
STAFF PHOTO//MOHAMMED MIRZA
We were recently in Taif on a business trip, but it’s not the kind of place where one can just visit for work and leave without touring. The city is so beautiful that it deserves to be seen and explored. Opportunely, we got some time off our schedule, and so we looked for places to see that were close to our hotel. Beit Kaki popped on our screen and was only a few minutes away. We instantly hastened to it. The house was smaller than we expected; it didn’t even stand out as a tourist site, blending in with its surroundings as it
was. There was a pool in the roundabout in front that gave it an aristocratic touch just like the mansions of Europe. We saw children resting under its verandah and assumed that they were there as part of a field trip from school as a school bus was parked nearby. However, they left soon afterward and we figured out that they weren’t here on a trip. They were just chilling beneath the mansion on their way back from school. From the façade, the building looks like a small mansion as it is only double storied. However, in length, the house is pretty long when compared to its width. Beit Kaki was built in 1943 just before the Saudi oil boom. In its design, one can see traces of Western influence, prominent in its cylindrical pillars and triangular balconies on the roof. However, since reinforced concrete wasn’t used in its construction, the house manages to retain an Arabian feel. Despite the simple windows and small façade, Beit Kaki has a unique aura to it and is one of the best preserved of all historic mansions in Taif. The preservation is most likely due to the fact that it has been sympathetically restored in the recent past. The windows, however, have been given a miss in the restoration.
DESTINATIONKSA.COM 73
Notwithstanding the fact that the family presumably spent only a few months every year in this house, they have not compromised any bit on its grandeur. Some of the yellow paint coated on its walls remains. It was a welcome change against the regular whitewashes of the other historic Hejazi mansions. The interiors of the house were coated in other colors like blue and green that made for an interesting contrast. The entrance of the house is where all the different colors of the house seem to converge – the part of the house that also features in many 74 DESTINATION RIYADH FEBRUARY 2018
Instagram feeds. Unlike other houses from much the same era, the windows here are not like the rawasheen types. They carry the floral and geometric design patterns but are simpler and less elaborate. Beit Kaki’s main door, however, is a far cry from the windows boasting elaborate Arabesque designs. It appears to be made of teakwood most likely imported from India or Indonesia. Unfortunately, the house is currently not open for visitors so one has to just imagine what it looks like from the inside. Presumably, it is built similar to other Hejazi homes, with its
main door leading to an entrance hall called the dilhiz. The first floor would be for guests and the upper floor reserved for the house’s residents. Taif has no shortage of remnants from the Pre-Islamic era; if one wants to get an idea of its recent past, Beit Kaki would be the perfect place to start. After all, its elegant architecture and design will not only serve as a reminder of history, its outstanding characteristics can also inspire new designs for contemporary construction and art.
