AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK at Diyar Al Salam A residential project unlike any other in the Kingdom.

Entrance and Lobby

Destination’s team went on an exclusive first-look tour of Diyar Al Salam’s model apartment site. What we discovered was far better than we could have imagined. Diyar Al Salam presents spacious homes with a modern approach to comfortable living. We were provided with protective helmets and jackets in a repurposed container made entirely out of reclaimed materials. The president and founder of Lifestyle Developers, Sultan Batterjee, led us on our tour of the model apartment. Dalal Al Fadhoul, Batterjee’s mother, launched Diyar Al Salam, which is

hailed as “a community within a community.” The project is an urban retreat that aims to provide high standards of living to middle and upper class professionals. The dove, a symbol of peace, embodies the project’s philosophical concept and is often seen as a motif in the project’s various structures and buildings. It is a massive project consisting of 8 buildings, including 140 residential units and 8 penthouses. The buildings are designed to optimize natural light and control air quality and water usage. Each living space is specialized to fit every aspect of a professional’s life.

14 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2016 ADVERTORIAL

The entrance lobby features custom designed marble flooring and oversized porcelain tiles to the elevator and stairs. Corridors contain wood effect porcelain tiles and a marble edge. The wallpapers and signage are also custom designed and eco-friendly. Residents access their home using electronic key cards. A professional system is in place to ensure security in the gated car park, which also contains electric car charging points.

Diyar Al Salam won the Best Residential Development Award at the International Property Awards and the Arabian Property Awards. It is the first private building in the Kingdom pursuing LEED, which is a notable achievement.

Attention to Detail As we walked through the rooms in the model apartment we discovered the attention to detail that proved the thoughtful planning that went into the project. The bedrooms had engineered parquet flooring along with oversized, glazed porcelain tiles throughout the apartment. All these combine to provide a contemporary style. The designer kitchens feature timber veneer doors, Italian stainless steel appliances by Bosch, integrated refrigerator and polished quartz

countertops. Kitchens are open to the living room but the open space can be conveniently controlled with floor to ceiling sliding doors. The bathrooms have white countertop mounted basins on imported marble vanities and honed marble floors and walls in the showers/bath. The glass-enclosed showers were quite spacious and modern. Every bathroom in the properties contains Hansgrohe fixtures and a Hansgrohe rain shower with separate hand shower controls. ADVERTORIAL

The apartments are installed with an integrated water heating system and a semicentral integrated airconditioning system in every apartment. A fiber optic supply panel is available in every apartment to control the network. All rooms contain contemporary socket outlets to control the lighting. What makes Diyar Al Salam stand out is its efficient and spacious make and the care that goes into creating ease. The project was designed to accommodate a contemporary lifestyle that matches the residents’ career standards. It allows residents to relax after work by providing a community environment that enriches and expands the mind.

Alf Khair For a Community that Cares “One thousand well wishes.” By Areeb Al Shathri

Alf Khair is a social enterprise founded by Princess Reema Bint Bandar that targets social development. With a name that translates roughly to “a thousand well wishes,” Alf Khair aims to provide more people with a wider access to opportunities, which earned them the 2016 Gold Sabre Award for best not-forprofit company. With an eye on becoming a center of excellence for personal and professional development, Alf Khair enables individuals to be productive, engaged, competent and integrated members of their communities. With four basic goals in mind, Alf Khair has already launched multiple initiatives to reach each of their targets.

18 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2016

1. Holistic health initiative created to raise awareness of the importance of good health behaviors. As part of their goal of educating people away from crisis care to more preventative care, Alf Khair has launched the 10KSA initiative. Most probably known for organizing the record breaking World’s Largest Humanitarian Ribbon to raise awareness about breast cancer, 10KSA aims to engage with local stakeholders and community members to encourage holistic health practices and collaborations.

2. Creating a more productive and healthier organizational culture through educating, training and developing skills. To advance their progress towards this goal, Alf Khair launched Alf Darb. Alf Darb is a holistic humancentered training program for professionals or companies to improve their overall engagement and productivity. They equip their participants with the skills, expertise, tools and networks needed for their personal growth and development, as well as focusing on attitude and motivation, readiness for work, entrepreneurship, leadership and empathy.

3. Inspire creative talent and provide a platform for creativity and creative discourse both in Saudi Arabia and around the world. Alf Khair has partnered up with Saudi Design Week to launch CREATE, a competition inspired by 10KSA's Wings of Hope. Wings of Hope is a moving exhibition of sorts that features, as you may have already guessed, wings created by leading designers and artists from around the world to promote a healthy lifestyle. The competition is open to everyone in hopes of inspiring people to engage with their creative side. The winner will be chosen by the Alf Khair and Saudi Design Week teams, and the chosen work will join the permanent collection of CREATE and become part of the traveling exhibition. 20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2016

4. Aiming to inspire a generation through dialogue. Alf Hewar is Alf Khair’s targeted initiative to promote a more open dialogue. Set to launch sometime in 2017, the Alf Khair team is currently ramping up the preparations for their latest initiative, which aims to open a dialogue between the youth of Saudi and successful individuals or businesses. SPORTY SPICE One of the earliest evidences of competitive sports are wall paintings of wrestlers that date back to 1850 BC in the ancient Egyptian tomb Beni Hasan. The role of Ancient Greek, Asian and Middle Eastern civilizations in formalizing some of today’s popular sports is well documented. Saudi Arabia is no exception, but its story is a little different. Archery, equestrianism and fencing are today considered competitive sports, but once upon a time in Arabia, they were part of everyday practices in hunting, traveling and fighting. At the same time, Prophet Mohammed’s (PBUH) emphases on these practices created a stronger commitment to them in the region. These cultural roots have contributed to the development of sports in the area, and with the ever-changing way of life in Sharqiya (such as the pearling and fishing industry), activities such as diving became part of our sporting heritage.

Our first Olympic medal, a bronze, was won by Ibrahim Jafar (taekwondo) at the Seoul 1988 games, followed by a silver in the Sydney 2000 games by Hadi Al Somaily (men’s

400 meter hurdles) and a bronze by Khalid Al Eid (equestrian), which Al Eid repeated in London 2012 with another bronze in equestrian team jumping.

Today, Sharqiya’s impact on sports reflects the local energy. With the establishment of the Saudi Star Drifting Championship (SSDC), drifting has become a recognized sport with a strong base in Sharqiya. Places like Jana Island along Jubail’s coast are motivation for residents to join the ranks of divers Hussam Shukri and Mariyam Ferdous, from the Saudi Domino team, who joined the Guinness World Records just this year as the first Arabs to dive the Arctic Sea (at -28 degrees Celsius).

At Al Hasa’s Shedgum Escarpment you will find climbers exploring new places to climb in Sharqiya. Meanwhile, cycling clubs and groups have redrawn Sharqiya’s traffic routes during the winter months. And with the high number of expatriates, new sports such as cricket are being added all the time. Sharqiya’s sport’s timeline reflects the true value of sports in bringing different people and places together to have fun and get active!

IT’S YOUR TURN NOW Lubna Al Omair’s journey to stardom. By Lama Ghazzawi

With more female athletes making their debut at the last Olympics as the representatives of Saudi Arabia, we wanted to mark this important milestone by telling you a little story. Lubna Al Omair’s journey began at 16, when she was in the comfort of her home watching the Olympic fencing matches. She thought nothing of it at the time because it wasn’t an option, but the spark lit a fire that would burn, dormant, for years. Years later, her education took her from Dammam to Rhode Island in pursuit of a master’s degree. Wanting to seize every moment of her opportunity, she created a bucket list and set out to cross off as many experiences as she could, fencing included. She searched high and low and found a fencing academy that was more than welcoming. Her love for fencing grew and she brought her passion back with her to Sharqiya.

Hoping to continue fostering her passion, Al Omair sought out ways to continue fencing by trying to join an existing club then starting her own, but was faced with rejection and dismissal. She was told that as a Saudi, she should “know better,” but that only made her more determined to change the status quo. After finding some success in establishing a fencing club at Aramco, where she was working at the time, she was approached by the Olympic committee about potentially representing KSA.

STAFF PHOTO/NAWAF ALFARRAJ

“Why not? Perhaps I’ll be ready by 2030 or sometime after that,” thought Al Omair, but was taken by surprise when told she would be participating in that year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Despite being overwhelmed at the prospect of participating in the biggest international competition against professional athletes, she accepted the challenge. For her, it wasn’t about winning; it was about being a representative, not just of her country, but also her gender. She knew her chances of wining were slim to none, but she also knew that by just being there she was opening a door that was previously closed. With only a few months to prepare, she headed to Alexandria, Egypt

for an immersive training process with Egyptian athletes. As a newcomer to professional sports, Al Omair was amazed at how much emphasis Egyptians place on sports. She noticed that despite the dire financial status of some of their families, they still found a way to foster their children’s talents or hobbies. Having had a different experience growing up in Saudi, she admired their balanced view that sports were as important as academics. “I knew I had no chance of winning,” she said as she recalled her Olympic debut. Her lack of training hindered her but she also knew that it was beside the point. With her presence alone, she had managed to pave the way for aspiring Saudi female athletes. “Now the option is there! Joud, Lubna, Sara and Kariman opened the door… You have a chance to represent, and represent well, now that you know it’s coming.”

If someone else is better than me… I’ll push her to go. I’d be happy just clapping. — Lubna Al Omair

MANSOUR ALRASHED A BODY, BUILT An eye-opening conversation with Saudi Arabia's competitive bodybuilder. By Jou Pabalate

There are proliferating stereotypes about bodybuilders— they’re often boxed muscle-clad, testosterone-pumping machines who spend all their days ‘buffing’ it up at a gym. What people don’t really realize is the amount of discipline, determination and passion that goes into training. Like any other sport, it’s not all just a matter of physical rigor, it also requires mental balance and strong willpower.

It’s been 18 years since Alrashed first trained to be a bodybuilding athlete. He participated in a number of competitions throughout the years and is due to partake on the international stage this month. 26 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2016

STAFF PHOTO/NAWAF ALFARRAJ

While you do wonder whether he’s capable of crushing your digits with a handshake, it only takes a minute for you to realize that Mansour Alrashed is quite the kind and personable chap with an admirable passion for professional bodybuilding.

The demands of the sport can be quite costly. Alrashed mentioned how his nutritional needs can rack up to around SR 2,000 per week. Thankfully, he is one of, if not the first ever Saudi athlete sponsored and endorsed by a brand. “It is a lot of hard work, my typical day starts at the crack of dawn; I need to prepare my food for the day. As an athlete I need to know exactly what goes into my body. And yes, the diet plan is not for the faint of heart. We’re looking at 15 egg whites in the morning, protein shakes, supplements and a dry diet that has made me lose two of my teeth in the past years,” he candidly shares. As expected, Alrashed goes to gym almost every day. His workout regimen consists of rigorous strength training and cardio. He sticks to a strict schedule, balancing his professional life as a secretary for a government institution, a personal fitness trainer, managing to make time for his daughter and having time to be a drummer for a rock metal band. A multi-faceted Saudi, Alrashed also has an entrepreneurial spirit. Combining his love for the sport with what he sees to be an underserved market, he is currently working on a strength training and body building app. He is also planning to launch a local fitness apparel line called Muscle Empire.

With the way we look and how we workout, people think we’re all muscles, mean looking or just aggressive. I understand why they would think that way, but it’s not true. A lot of bodybuilders are easy going, nice guys— we just enjoy taking care of our body a certain way. — Mansour Alrashed

With the persistence of such misconceptions, we asked Alrashed what the benefits are to becoming a bodybuilder, to which he replied: “There are a lot. And it’s not just about building muscles, in general, fitness— taking the time to build a body that is strong and you’re comfortable with is important. It gives you confidence, it allows you to stay positive and feel good about yourself. You start your day feeling you have already achieved something when you manage to do your workout whether it’s lifting a hundred pounds or simply taking the time to take care of yourself.” mansouralrashed010

UNDERSTANDING THE CANCER CELL Learn more about the fatal disease with Houston Methodist Hospital.

What is the most common gynecologic cancer in the world? Cervical cancer is the most common, and it’s the second most common cause of death from cancer in women worldwide.

What can you do to prevent cervical cancer? Any woman 21 years or older should make sure they have an annual gynecologic exam and Pap smear. Girls and women ages 13 to 26 should also consider the approved vaccine to prevent the human papillomavirus (HPV).

What causes endometrial cancer in women?

Endometrial cancer starts in the lining of the uterus. It usually takes years to develop and commonly occurs in women who have already gone through menopause. Abnormal or postmenopausal bleeding

is the most common symptom and should be evaluated by a gynecologist. There are several well-known risk factors for endometrial cancer including obesity, diabetes, hypertension and chronic anovulation. Hormonal disorders like Polycystic ovary syndrome can also cause the cancer.

OBESITY Overweight women have a greater risk of developing endometrial cancer, even if they’re young and not experiencing menopause. Estrogen produced by body fat increases the risk of endometrial cancer.

Dr. Joshua Kilgore, a notable gynecologic oncologist at the world renowned Houston Methodist Hospital, answers important questions regarding gynecologic cancer and its many implications that gravely affect women.

TREATMENT USING THE DRUG TAMOXIFEN A drug used to prevent and treat breast cancer can slightly increase a women’s risk of developing endometrial cancer, but it’s a risk that’s balanced by the reduction in risk of breast cancer. If you use tamoxifen, notify your doctor if you have any unusual vaginal bleeding.

What are some signs and symptoms of vaginal cancer? Vaginal cancers, just like many other gynecologic cancers, do not typically cause any noticeable symptoms in the early stage. However, this may be detected on a Pap smear as part of an annual examination.

As the disease develops, more noticeable symptoms appear, including: • Abnormal vaginal bleeding. • Pelvic pain. • Lesion in the vagina. • A lump or bump in the groin.

Should I be concerned about ovarian cancer? While ovarian cancer causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system, breakthroughs in treatment options have made this cancer much more manageable. Of the three kinds of ovarian cancer,

epithelial is the most common, accounting for 85 percent of all cases. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

What is the role of laparoscopic or robotic surgery in the treatment of gynecologic cancers? Due to recent advances in technology, women diagnosed with cervical cancer, endometrial cancer and early ovarian cancer are now candidates for surgery using the new laparoscopic or robotic approaches.

The benefits of these minimally invasive techniques over the traditional open technique include smaller incisions, decreased blood loss, shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery. Web: houstonmethodist.org/global

PILATES FAQ Everything you wanted to know about it.

By Tuba Saricimen

Will Pilates make me taller?

If you have rounded shoulders or you slouch, then Pilates will help you strengthen your core and stretch out your spine, making you appear taller. 30 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2016

Are Pilates and yoga the same?

There are some similarities and differences. Pilates, like yoga, deals with flexibility, but focuses more on core strength and posture. There is equipment in Pilates, whereas yoga does not use it. Like yoga, Pilates has a mind–body connection, but there is no meditation involved.

Will Pilates help me lose weight?

Pilates can help with weightloss however, it's more of a complementary exercise type. If you do a routine exercise program, such as a type of cardio exercise, have a balanced and healthy diet, and complement those with pilates at least twice a week, you can lose weight and tone.

STAFFPHOTO/TUBA SARICIMEN

We met with certified Pilates instructor Nada Al Barzinji and asked her all the questions that you’ve been wondering about the trending exercise of the decade: Pilates.

I’m unfit. Can I do Pilates?

Yes, Pilates is suitable for people of all ages and at any level of physical fitness. Even children can practise Pilates. In fact, it can help you get fitter!

Can I do Pilates if I have a spinal injury?

Yes, I recommend it but you have to have the go-ahead from your doctor.

Can pregnant women do Pilates?

Will I have a six-pack if I do Pilates?

Yes, if you’re exercising, eating right, and doing a lot of ab workout.

Do you need equipment

to do Pilates?

Using equipment is a plus, not a must. There are some really good mat exercises to do when equipment is not available.

Can men also practice Pilates?

Absolutely. In fact, Pilates was founded by Joseph Hubertus Pilates to help rehabilitate injured veterans in World War I. He was inspired by the ideal classic Greek man who is balanced in mind, body and soul. Later, dancers started practicing it because Pilates strengthens the core.

I highly recommend pregnant woman to practice Pilates. It will definitely assist and prepare them for delivery. It’s good for strengthening their core and transverse abdominis and it helps with breathing. In addition, it helps them regain their strength after delivery. Pregnant women should always make sure they practice Pilates with a qualified prenatal Pilate’s instructor. Web: pilatesbynada.com pilatesbynada

RU BIES in Our KITCHEN

Allah has given us the perfect alternatives to all medications, so why not take advantage of that? One such alternative is pomegranates. Shiny red jewels that taste good and have some amazing health benefits. There are three types, and they each have their own flavor, taste and benefits. 32 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2016

STAFF PHOTO/YASMIN OUF

An alternative for medication.

SOUR POMEGRANATES • Pomegranate seeds that are mixed with honey will alleviate septic fingers and malignant ulcers.

BITTER POMEGRANATE

• It softens bile symptoms, relieves diarrhoea, prevents vomiting and is slightly tarry. • It stops the heat in the liver, strengthens the organs, helps with heartaches.

SWEET POMEGRANATE • The water (or juice) in the pomegranates softens the stomach and is a nutrient for the body. • It digests quickly because it is light and produces heat along with some air in the stomach. • It is also good for the throat, chest and lungs and helps with relieving coughs.

• It helps the stomach rid of its excrement and extinguishes the bile and benefits the blood. • When pomegranate juice is extracted and cooked with some honey until it becomes like an ointment, it can be used as eye drops. It will clear the yellow color from the eyes and dissipate the thick wetness. • It helps with rashes on the gingiva (gums).

• Pomegranate flowers help heal wounds and if swallowed thrice each year will make the patient immune from ophthalmic (conjunctivitis) for an entire year.

The pomegranate also comes under the fruits that Allah has mentioned in the Quran, and will be of the fruits of Jannah. “In both of them are fruit and palm trees and pomegranates.” (Surat Ar-Rahman, 55:68)

Since we have an idea of the benefits now, let’s head out to the closest store and get some pomegranates! Web: aateam.org theislamicteam

OUR BLACK BEAUTIES The many benefits of black seeds. When ancient Egyptian kings, European queens and modern scientists come together on an issue, it’s probably worth hearing. Although today we have more access to information than ever before, we still have a lot to learn from history.

The saying, “tiny yet mighty,” is a perfect description of black seeds. Its health benefits are enormous. Here are just some of them.

34 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2016

STAFF PHOTO/YASMIN OUF

From Hippocrates and Cleopatra, to King Tut and the civilizations that followed, a strange commonality they shared was the value they placed on a certain herb. That herb is no other than the black seeds, or Habba Soda in Arabic.

Where does black seed oil come from?

IMMUNITY

Nigella seeds are an immunity enhancer that help with treatment of conditions.

STIMULANT

Increases the flow of adrenaline and energy.

BRAIN

Research suggests that nigella seeds help beautify, but also act as a secret remedy to increase memory power and retention.

DIURETIC

Increases urine flow by ridding the body of excess water.

CARMINATIVE

Rids the body of gas from the intestines.

HAIR

Black seed oil plays a significant role in hair growth stimulation by strengthening the hair follicles which result in strong hair roots.

AN EMMENAGOGUE AND GALACTAGOGUE Increases the flow during menstruation and the production of milk.

VERMIFUGE

Expels worms.

Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said, “Use this Black Seed regularly, because it is a cure for every disease, except death.” [Al Bukhari and Muslim]

Being useful is a characteristic of all Sunnah foods, and black seeds are no exception. More importantly this highlights the mercy of Allah, who ordains us only for things that are beneficial. Muslims have been using and promoting the use of black seeds for hundreds of years, and hundreds of articles have been written about it. Black seeds have also been in use worldwide for over 3,000 years. It is not only a prophetic herb, but it also holds a unique place in the medicine of the Prophet (PBUH). So what are we waiting for? Let’s open those kitchen cabinets and make use of our black beauties that have up until now been personifying sleeping beauties.

Black seed oil is an extracted oil substance deriving from the Nigella Sativa plant that is native to Asia. Considered part of the buttercup family, the plant has small, crescent shaped seeds that are distinguished by its rough texture, making them unique and easy to identify. The ingredients found in black seed oil produce a panacea remedy, where it is used to cure all aspects of a given illness. Its multipurpose effect is derived from the following properties: • Anti-bacterial • Anti-inflammatory • Anti-oxidant • Anti-fungal • Anti-cancer • Anti-asthmatic • Anti-histamine • Anti-viral • Anti-coagulant Web: aateam.org theislamicteam

Sharqiya is More

Let’s Explore! Finally, someone is giving us the Sharqiya directory app that we deserve. By Norah Al Eisa

36 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2016

Sharqiya has a lot to offer, from aspiring artists and innovative entrepreneurs to fascinating events and a great selection of restaurants that people can't seem to keep up with. Well, Wain013 is going to help keep them up to date with all of that. It will also be the main resource that provides full and accurate information to help discover the city in a greater perspective.

How did the idea of Wain 013 come about?

Frustration was our main driver. It’s so difficult to know what’s happening around here. You have to scroll through

STAFF PHOTO/ ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD

Can you describe the main purpose behind Wain 013?

endless Instagram pages to stumble upon a good restaurant or realize you missed out on an event. We felt that Sharqiya needed a more organized platform to easily access such important information.

Can you tell us a bit more about the team?

Ghsoon’s eye for perfection, Reem’s intuitive creativity and Noura’s technical skills all came together beautifully under the umbrella that is our passion for our Wain 013 mission.

What has been your recipe for success so far?

Ghsoon

Noura

We laugh, argue, joke around and have some awkward moments of silence, but at the end of the day we appreciate each other’s valuable opinions. We communicate really well despite our differences and try to reach common ground for the best interest of Wain. But, the most important ingredient to our success is having fun throughout the process and enjoying every moment of it. Oh, and sushi takeout for weekly meetings.

Reem

What is your favorite aspect of working on the app?

Seeing our ideas come to life has been very rewarding and exciting. We love the lessons and challenges we’re getting along the way as we try to make the service we provide reliable and fun for our audience.

How does the transition of Wain 013 from an Instagram account to an app benefit your readers?

We had started using social media to establish an audience for Wain 013 specifically to give people a glimpse of our app before it was launched. While the social media accounts are representing the look and feel of the app, the app itself will offer more functionalities, including a directory of all the shops and restaurants as well as a calendar with all the events happening in the region.

How do you see Wain 013 growing in the future?

We want to be present in every country in the GCC as a platform of reliable information and great content that serves people in different aspects of their daily lives. We want to expand beyond a virtual platform and bring the online offline! wain013

By Arwa Al Mousa

Why did you choose to be a pop-art artist?

Tell us some more about yourself.

I’m the owner and creator of Huna Art and Saudi Pop Art, created to support and encourage artists of Sharqiya and also to work as an art directory for Saudi Arabia. I label myself more an artistentrepreneur than artist. 38 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2016

How did you start Huna Art?

My partner Raneen Bukhari and I started it in 2011 as a temporary project. Thankfully, this lasted and became permanent after our co-founders joined: Sultan Albadran, Anfal Alhammad, Mashael Albarjas and Roaa Algareen.

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD

This happened after a long journey of searching for my brand of simple and yet expressive art. Pop art does that for me by expressing our daily lives through its wild colors and simple illustrations. I find it so full of optimism and life.

Huna Art organizes some art events, projects and trips but our main attraction is our interviews with artists. We want to spread art culture by showcasing inspirational stories of artists, their work and their methods.

What do you think of popart in Saudi Arabia?

There are so many who practice it well, but very few do work that authentically reflects their individualism and identity. In my initiative @ saudipopart, I present awesome art examples from local Saudi artists to help better represent this art to our society.

What’s more important: raw and innate talent or dedicated skill?

In my opinion, I think a talented person will be creative by nature. However, they can never master their skill if they rely on talent alone. Training, learning and being exposed and inspired by those around you, all of this helps hone that talent and turn it into a killer combination that shows in your work.

What would you like to say to up and coming artists?

This is a bit rough, but it has to be said: you need to know that no one will come provide help or support in getting you out there. Don’t wait on anyone; don’t wait for the right moment. You are all you need. Your talent and work are your biggest supporters. If you set your mind to it, you can do anything. hunaart

Laila Al Omran and Fay Al Mutlaq are friends and business partners who share a love for all things stylish, but the similarities end there.

CHIC ON EDGE What does it take to start your own fashion site? Laila Al Omran and Fay Al Mutlaq answer the question.

54 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2016

Al Mutlaq studied IT at the Royal University in Bahrain, but was always a fashion fanatic, following fashion shows and the latest trends. For her, fashion is anything but materialistic. “It is an art form,” she said. “It is profound and It helps people express themselves.” Al Mutlaq is passionate about selfexpression, whether through writing or outfit choices.

“It was a very soul-searching period,” said Al Mutlaq. “We had no clear vision, structure or mechanism except that we wanted to support talent. We started with scraps and scribbles, just waiting for the other to bail.” They admit that they didn't even think it would happen right up till they saw the pieces coming together.

Chic on Edge was established in January this year, dedicated to building relationships with designers.

We want to grow our business together and enjoy the process. — Fay Al Mutlaq

Al Mutlaq recalls how her mother pushed her to pursue something more productive than simply pouring over blogs and runway shows. Inheriting the business genes from her father, she was inspired to follow her dreams and work hard to achieve them. Al Mutlaq never thought she would own a business at this stage. Neither did Al Omran. Al Omran studied Finance at Prince Mohammed Bin Fahd University and then Management and Organizational Innovation

from Queen Mary University of London. Al Omran’s dissertation focused on fashion from a business perspective, specifically researching the emerging trend of e-commerce in Saudi Arabia. She worked in London and Dubai before coming back to Sharqiya, armed with the determination to start her own business. The girls soon began the planning process for their fashion retail website. While Al Omran focused on the business plans, finance and analytics, Al Mutlaq took over marketing and social media.

Their designers are spread out all over the world, from Switzerland, Italy, Georgia and Ukraine to Paris, Lebanon, Philippines and Dubai. As for their target audience, “Chic on Edge is a lifestyle for people who want their personalities to spring out through their outfit choices.” Web: chiconedge.com

Don’t worry about having white bread; you’ve got a whole day of activity to digest and burn it. 64 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2016

Breakfast is the most important meal that you can’t skip. The main focus is to have a protein-packed meal to keep you full and energized through the day. A whole-grain salmon sandwich from Uptown 966 with a side salad has it all. If you want something a little more traditional, you can have a full platter of rawagan from Rewaq Hajer.

LUNCH

Increase your vegetable intake by adding a salad to your meal. Kushari from Afandina Saraya is a great lunch option for vegetarian lovers as it’s full of proteins. Another idea is to eat a simple grilled meal such as the Blanc De Blanc dish from Pattis France. You can always alter your meal by asking for less butter, less salt and sauce on the side. afandinasaraya pattisfrance

DINNER For dinner it’s good to keep it nice and light: Salads or soups are the best options. Choose your salads with citrus dressings and keep it under control by asking for it on the side. You can add some protein (like grilled chicken) if you want to fill up more. Or, a steak salad from Big Chefs is a great example. If your bedtime is close, it’s better to have a soup full of nutrition that’s easy to digest, but remember to avoid creamy soups.

We love the soup selection at Social Network Cafe.

FOR THE LOVE OF COFFEE

The relationship between Saudis and Arabic coffee.

Arabic coffee is as much of a staple in every Saudi home, occasion, or any general place with walls and Saudis inside, as butter is in a French one. Some days you manage to pull off the oh so elusive perfect dallah of Arabic coffee, while other days you’re stuck with a watered down faux version. Yatooq, which translates to “longing,” is a very familiar name for people who have struggled in the past with making “real” Arabic coffee. Prior to their ascension, the process of making the perfect dallah is a bit of a toss up. But now, Yatooq has managed to turn the art of coffee

making into an exact science, guaranteeing you the same flavor every time. Their coffee machine revolutionized the way we make and consume Arabic coffee. Yatooq’s story began when their founder, Lateefa Alwalaan, sought out to find a solution for her house’s inability to master Arabic coffee. She launched an expedition to every region in Saudi to figure out the secret to creating the prefect cup. With an idea of creating an Arabic coffee machine on the backburner, Alwalaan decided to start by introducing her very own brand of traditional all-natural and preservative free coffee, marking Yatooq’s first endeavor.

Later Yatooq’s line of Arabic coffee blends and local drinks expanded to include a much loved local tea drink, Karak tea, a hot tea and milk drink famous in the region. A line of instant Arabic coffee has been launched as well, to serve customers on the go.

BRAIN FREEZE All the deliciousness of ice cream with none of the guilt. By Lamies Ali

Ikea Here's a nice surprise: Ikea's frozen yogurt! Tastes just like Pinkberry's original, so in other words: tastes crazy good. It's a shame they only have one flavor and three toppings, but hey, it costs only four Riyals. Location: Next to Amwaj Mall, Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Rd., Dhahran Tel: 920004532

By this point, I had figured that these stores must be out of creative ways to top each other. Roll Cup proved me wrong. After you choose your flavor, they can blend cheesecake, Lotus, or your choice of fruit with the frozen yogurt. They should work on providing more options, but the yogurt is still really good and the idea is deliciously unique. We approve! Location: Venicia Mall, Khobar 68 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2016

Smoothie Factory What makes Smoothie Factory’s frozen yogurt special are the flavors. The toppings are below average, but it’s the only place I’ve seen that has white-chocolate-covered pretzels. The experience as a whole is super fun, you get to control your serving yourself and even mix flavors together. They charge by the gram. Location: Alkawthar, Saihat / Tilal Al Doha, Dhahran

Pinkberry

Menchie’s

Pinkberry regularly introduces new flavors, and their frozen yogurt comes in a lot of different shapes and sizes. Make sure to always check the menu on the wall for somthing new to try. Get the good old original yogurt in a large container. You can just pretend it’s not all going to be consumed by only you in one night; they’ll play along.

Like Smoothie Factory, at Menchie’s you get to fill your own cup and are charged by the gram, but they also have a special cake batter flavor that’ll steal your heart. Their toppings are as varied as Pinkberry’s, but they have more candy bars as toppings.

Location: Othaim Mall, Dammam / Al Rashid Mall, Khobar / King Fahd International Airport

Saving the best for last, here are the two truly unique things they have to offer: hosting parties and the cutest merch you’ve ever seen. Who wouldn’t wear a peanut butter cup pin or a frozen yogurt t-shirt? Location: Al Jalawiyah Dist., Dammam

Cold Weather CALLING

The best high altitude Saudi towns and cities. By Mohammed Mirza

Altitude ≈ 1,507 m (4,945 ft)

Perhaps the most famous of all high altitude Saudi towns, Taif is celebrated for its historic forts, gorgeous mountain scenery, pleasant weather and abundance of tourist entertainment options (though some of them remain closed during the winter). Located close to the three major cities (Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah), the city is almost like an unofficial summer capital. It is the agricultural produce of this city that ends up in most Saudi dinner plates in the form of fruits. Farm visits and fresh produce shopping are a major draw for tourists in Taif. 78 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2016

HAIL

Hail

Altitude ≈ 991m (3,253 ft)

It is not exactly high compared to the other place on the list, but it is relatively on a higher ground that gives it milder temperatures when compared to other places in central Arabia. Plus, it is rich in history. The rock art found near the city of Hail has recently entered the coveted UNESCO World Heritage List. So if you’re a history and nature lover who doesn’t want to travel to the deep southwestern part of the country, then this is the place where you can get two birds with one arrow.

Abha

Altitude ≈ 2,224 m (7,297 ft)

Its fog, highland climate and pictorial landscapes, make it a popular getaway for residents of the country. Nearby Abha stands what is believed to be the highest peak in Saudi, Jabal Souda. Embedded with rich history and heritage there are plenty of historic sites in the city that are tourist magnets. Not only that, the roads leading to Abha are equally dramatic making it one the best road trips to embark on in the country.

The city offers good silver jewelry shopping options through its renowned Khamis Souk and Silver Souq. With copious options for shopping, good food and plentiful escapades to major tourist attractions like the hanging village of Habalah and stone town of Rijal Alma, you’ll have your hands full with things to do in this commercial city.

At times it even snows in this region. So as soon as you see the photos of snow in Saudi in the news, you know where to head to. Or if you want to experience subzero temperatures, then a visit in winter will allow you to witness just that. Just an FYI, those sub-zero temperatures feel good only for a while after that you can’t wait for the sun to come up so that you can start exploring the city again.

HISTORIC KSA Jeddah at the Center of the India–Egypt Trade Where goods from the east and the west met. By Mohammed Mirza

An often overlooked part of Jeddah's history is its significance in maritime trade and status as a major entrepôt. Jeddah's strategic location right in the midst of a major trade route has helped it grow leaps and bounds. Up until the 10th century Jeddah did not play a major part in maritime trade. It was only when the Egypt-India trade rose that Jeddah started seeing goods coming to it from the east and the west. The port served as a mart of sorts between the India – Egypt trade. Ships passing from the Suez Canal rarely proceeded further south than the port at Jeddah and those from India likewise in many cases did not advance further north from this port. The merchants of Jeddah would buy goods from India and transship it to agents in Cairo who sold the goods domestically and to other places across the Mediterranean. Among the goods brought to Jeddah to be re-exported were sugar, rice,

dyes, teakwood, spices and various types of cloths. Jeddah’s firm foothold in the Red Sea trade was the result of a pact involving port authorities and shipmasters. However, once the Portuguese discovered an alternative route to India across the Cape of Good Hope, the fortunes of the city dwindled and Jeddah once again became dependent majorly on pilgrims.

I Eat,

Therefore I Chef The journey from eating raw sea cucumbers to serving sushi. By @saudifooodie

We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Michael Sang-Kyu Lee, the chef at the popular Japanese fusion Meisei restaurant.

I am quite private about my personal life but I find that innovation, diversity and passion are the keys to a successful professional life.

Why did you choose to become a chef?

I had never intended to be a chef as a child; I just liked to eat.

84 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2016

STAFF PHOTO/ TUBA SARICIMEN

Chef Michael, tell us about yourself.

What is your first food memory?

Walking in a South Korean market with my parents and eating my first raw sea cucumber. I was maybe 4 or 5 years old.

Who has influenced your cooking the most?

When I was young, definitely my mom. Later on in my life I became heavily influenced by my wife and peers.

Who are your favorite chefs?

Anyone that is sincere, respectful and honorable.

Which seasonings don’t you respect? Anything artificial.

Are there any culinary trends you are wild about right now?

I don’t tend to follow trends, but I will say that street food is highly underrated.

What’s in your fridge at home?

This may surprise you, but very little! I have zero time to cook at home unfortunately.

What food is your guilty pleasure?

Whatever I crave at the moment, which is a dangerous but delicious habit.

Fill in the blank: If I weren’t a chef, I’d be… A fashion designer. I had a strong interest in fashion when I was young. If not that though, I always had an interest in firefighting. meiseibahrain
