MAJED AL HOKAIR A LEGACY OF FUN

A commitment to entertainment in the Kingdom. By Areeb Al Shathri

10 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

We could have gone into the business of real estate or land development, but it lacked the human element. It lacked the community aspect. — Majed Al Hokair

We sat down with Al Hokair Group’s Vice Chairman, Majed Al Hokair, to discuss his family’s commitment to entertainment in Saudi Arabia. When I was growing up, the name Al Hokair was synonyms with fun. Driving past the colorful façade of Al Hokair Land on Riyadh’s Eastern Ring Road, the urge to jump out the car and run inside would’ve been overwhelming if it weren’t for the fact that eminent death is a direct result of jumping out of moving vehicles. On a recent visit, my DCraised niece Norah claimed that Riyadh is better than DC because we have Minopolis and Sparky’s. Over a generation later, and the Al Hokair name is still associated with fun. Founded in 1975, the group set its sights on becoming the nation’s pioneer in entertainment. They dipped their feet into the proverbial entertainment pool with a park that only had three rides. The entertainment scene at that time was practically nonexistent. This was the first endeavor of its kind in the country. “We had an influx of people coming to the park, from

royalty to everyday people.” The reception this little threeride park garnered pushed the company to invest more in the field. “We partnered with Italian companies to import more games. Now we have over 75 entertainment centers throughout the Kingdom,” said Al Hokair. Al Hokair’s father, Abdulmohsin, was always, as his son put it, “nontraditional.” He has always sought to take the path least traveled. He wanted to pursue things that were related to the community. “We could have gone into the business of real estate or land development, but it lacked the human element. It lacked the community aspect.” What makes this group special is its reach. Al Hokair doesn’t settle for just being in places like Riyadh, Jeddah or Sharqiya, but aims for true widespread presence by investing in smaller cities throughout the country. In the late ‘80s, the group expanded into hospitality. If you’re wondering how successful that endeavor was, we’ll answer you with a question. Have you ever stayed in any incarnation of a Hilton,

Holiday Inn, Novotel, Golden Tulip or a Radisson in Saudi Arabia? If your answer is yes, you, my friend, are also connected to Al Hokair. They have two decades worth of experience and over 40 hotels. “They say a child is connected to Al Hokair from their beginnings to adulthood. This became our strategy.”

Al Hokair’s vision is to curate a person’s entire experience; from the moment you land, everything from transportation, accommodation, entertainment and even sightseeing. And it looks like Al Hokair is closer to that aim than ever. The launch of their Riyadh red bus tours have been causing quite the stir in the capital, and just so happens to tick the last box: sightseeing. When it comes to the company’s future, Al Hokair is keeping up with the trends in entertainment. With the knowledge that the majority of the country’s demographic is young, Al Hokair is catering to who we, up to recently, liked to call the neglected middle 12 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

children of Saudi: too old for the rides but too young for soap operas. “The young generation needs outlets, and needs companies to start considering them.” They’re combining entertainment and physical activity to combat idleness with projects like Sky Zone in Riyadh and Jeddah or Snowy Forest in Dammam, Jeddah, Madinah, Jizan and Riyadh. Al Hokair also sees potential in the Kingdom becoming a health destination and a go-to spot for natural tourism. Many Saudis travel aboard to countries such as the Czech Republic for rehabilitation and treatment, a trend Al

Hokair is hoping to curb by establishing rehabilitation centers within the Kingdom. They’re also investing in nature tourism to share the countries beauty, as well as rekindling national pride. “We hope for more growth, more options, resilience, variety and longevity,“ explained Al Hokair. He states that those qualities are going to be their anchor in the changing face of the Kingdom. “In Riyadh especially with the completion of the metro, we’re going to see drastic shift both economically and socially.” And no one else is more prepared for it than them.

THE EVOLUTION OF Saudi Arabia is about to get a lot more fun! By Caroline Hillier

14 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

MEET THE CEO OF THE GEA

With big productions like Cirque du Soleil and the Lion King set to take place in Saudi Arabia in the coming months, and potential events that will bring in big names like Oprah and Al Pacino, the entertainment industry is going through major changes. Since the General Entertainment Authority (GEA) was created in May 2016, it’s held multiple successful events, but it has an even more ambitious plan for 2017. Most days, Amr Al Madani, the CEO of the Authority, arrives at his office in Riyadh before 8 a.m. and doesn’t leave until after 8 p.m. That is, on the days he’s not traveling to every corner of the country in search of event planners and performers. Al Madani is a busy man; he oversees day-to-day operations and hears reports from every department within the GEA. He explains that his goal isn’t only to plan events, but to put smiles on faces.

When asked his favorite part of his job, he gives an unexpected and thoughtful answer. Pictures – in particular selfies – and family photo albums are what fuels his passion. “A picture is worth a thousand words and it really makes for a great return on all our investment when we see a happy family taking a selfie, laughing and leaving with great memories,” said Al Madani. “It gives us hope that our ambition of having more pictures in our photo albums from Saudi Arabia than from elsewhere in the world is a possibility.” Photo albums are filled with scenes of vacations outside the country because in the past, families were forced to cross the border in search of fun. But with the GEA busy planning comedy shows, festivals and concerts in more than 20 cities in the Kingdom, the hope is residents will stay put to be entertained. Proud of what’s been achieved in such a short time, Al Madani explains that more than 150,000 people attended GEA events in just the last few months. DESTINATIONKSA.COM

15

VISION 2030 The General Entertainment Authority is closely linked to one of Vision 2030’s key goals: “To provide cultural and entertainment opportunities to the public, to support local talent and develop projects that will generate job opportunities and grow our economy.”

The GEA's events don’t only generate fun, but also generate money. Under Vision 2030, a clear target has been set to double household spending on recreational opportunities, bumping it up to 6 percent by 2030. For Al Madani, the math is simple. “If they are spending money at home on entertainment, rather than abroad, then that will boost our economy.” As Al Madani points out, if the GEA continues to attract interest and investment from international companies, it'll boost Saudi’s economy and improve its business image globally. Expanding the industry will also translate to more jobs.

One of the GEA’s most recent successful events was Saudi Arabia’s first Comic Con. The event, which featured top international celebrities from popular shows like Game of Thrones and

16 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

Hannibal, was very well attended. Other events include the iLuminate show, an Arab’s Got Talent show, music concerts, and a show featuring Fluffy the comedian.

Follow @Roznamah_sa on Twitter to see the calendar of events and daily announcements from the General Authority of Entertainment.

Although not all events for 2017 have been announced, those that have been are impressive, including a production of Tom & Jerry, the Lion King, and Sesame Street. Other events like unique markets, Monster Truck shows, gamer’s events and poetry nights are all on the calendar too. When asked about the possibility of a movie theater and a big amusement park in the near future, Al Madani wasn’t able to answer directly. He did confirm that protecting and respecting Saudi’s cultural heritage is very important to his team. DESTINATIONKSA.COM

17

“A lot of people in the Kingdom are interested in live theater and concerts. When we leave the Kingdom, we can see shows, but it would be great to be able to see them in our home country.”

18 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

STAFF PHOTO/CAROLINE HILLIER

“Like many people here, I’d love to see movie theaters open up in the country!”

“I work in the fashion industry in Saudi Arabia, so I’d like to see more emphasis on fashion, in particular, a Fashion Week event.”

“As a director, I want to see some kind of union or guild for directors that can help me grow and can protect my rights.”

“I think Saudi Arabia is ready for a huge amusement park, like Six Flags!”

“I’m a cyclist, so I’d like to see more cycling paths throughout Saudi Arabia to encourage more people to try cycling and have a safe space to do it.”

When the MP first rolled up its sleeves to start the work, it conducted the first comprehensive study of 10,700 people on sports and physical activity in the country. It was found that Saudi Arabia pales in comparison to other societies. Seventy percent

Changing an entire society’s mindset towards physical activity is a challenge the General Sports Authority has taken on and is fully committed to. The Mass Participation Program (MP), established under the authority’s umbrella, has been creating a strategy to engage the public and build opportunities for residents to lead more active lifestyles.

of the population (ages 15+) admitted to not have engaged in sports or physical activity in the last month and only 13 percent were considered to be living an active lifestyle based on a 30-minutes weekly benchmark. A lot of health issues today are related to inactivity and very poor lifestyle habits. Aligned with Vision 2030, the main initiatives are divided into eight pillars: Schools and universities, community sports groups, private partnerships, municipalities, mass participation events, community-focused coaching and volunteering, communication campaigns, and insights and monitoring.

RECENT ACTIVITIES COMMUNITY SPORTS GROUPS One of the biggest undertakings of the program is to help foster and sustain community sports groups. The first and largest database of groups from all regions has been established, allowing people to find out what options are available, which is hoped to grow further. Groups that were traditionally hard to track down are now readily available, thanks to the MP. To discover other enthusiasts of a particular sport, simply search the hashtag: ‫ مجتمع_صحي_رياضي‬# The MP offers support to new groups and provides them with assistance to get started, conduct activities and increase membership.

PNU, THE ACTIVITY HUB FOR WOMEN Acknowledging that women in Saudi Arabia are eager to get more active, the MP is working on a program at

Princess Nourah University (PNU) that will see various facilities activated in the university. PNU and the General Sports Authority signed a memorandum of understanding to ensure the support of women’s participation in physical activity. Female gyms, outdoor facilities and sports events are all part of the partnership to provide an example for leading an active lifestyle for women.

EVENTS In a short amount of time, the MP has already managed to shake up the social scene of Saudi Arabia and inspire people to pursue healthier activities. The recently concluded Spartan Races in Riyadh and Jeddah are just a sample of what’s in store, with more to come in 2017.

MADEHA AL AJROUSH Scratching the Surface

An interview with the Saudi photographer behind the book “Resurface.” By Jou Pabalate

They say that beauty lies in every turn for those who dare to delve just beneath the surface. Indeed, for Madeha Al Ajroush, a passionate seeker of people’s narratives and a believer of the strong history the Kingdom has, it meant traveling for five years deep into Saudi Arabia’s many deserts in order to capture and document its hidden treasure: petroglyphs. 24 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

Despite her successful professional life, Al Ajroush has somehow found the time to pursue her passion for photography. Make no mistake, she knows her way around her camera; in fact, she is considered to be one of the very first Saudi commercial photographers in the city.

Her fascination has always been deconstructing the human psyche and condition. She is after all, one of the leading psychotherapists in the Kingdom. With a private practice that has considerably helped society while attempting to raise the level of awareness, she managed to debunk societal stigmas.

And now, the Columbian University alumnus has completed her third photography book, entitled, “Resurface.” The book focuses on the presence of female imagery in its historical rock art depiction and context. Al Ajroush would find herself traversing and hiking on weekends with Suzan Al Mutawa over the course of

three years, attempting to document and photograph the rocks. The book captures imagery that may have otherwise become forgotten. And because of that, we are given the opportunity to inquire, investigate and decode the meaning behind these works. Web: madeha-alajroush.com Email: madehaalajroush@gmail.com madehaAlajrous

She is also quite the community advocate. At 62, Al Ajroush has been at the helm of various nationwide projects - from being one of the core founders of a local organization helping people dealing with domestic abuse

to helping train trainers to deal with post-trauma cases of displaced Syrian refugees.

My first experience shooting was at a cousin’s wedding and that was a major flop. I didn’t know until the rolls of films were developed that all the prints were black. That’s when I decided to properly take a course on photography in the US. I’ve gone from that wedding to eventually finding my work on Riyadh’s billboards.

HAIRCARE REMEDIES They’re easy and they make all the difference. By Amal Murad

Taking care of your hair starts with NOT washing it everyday. To wash, choose a shampoo that is plantbased and has more natural ingredients such as almond, argan, coconut and vitamins. Unfiltered water can damage your hair, and the climate here

dehydrates your scalp and hair causing dullness and tangles. You can easily fix that by rinsing it with filtered water before you leave the shower. Also, cold water can add a refreshing and shining touch to your hair. You'll step out of the shower feeling refreshed.

MY HAIR IS DRY AT EDGES AND OILY AT ROOTS That is a sign that you need to watch over your diet by eliminating junk food and sugar. Try shampoo without conditioner; apply a few drops of non-sticky rich serum, such as argan or macadamia on your hair, avoiding the roots. Also use a hair mask once a week to moisturize your hair. The hair mask should include avocado, almond or aloe vera.

Honey is great too, for an extra shine.

I HAVE DANDRUFF

MY HAIR IS CURLY

Olive oil, coconut oil and apple cider vinegar solutions are the best natural way to get rid of dandruff. Apply it to your scalp using finger tips, 20 minutes before your shower, and wash your hair once a week only with anti-dandruff shampoo.

Curly hair needs to be washed using 100 percent sulfate-free shampoo. If your hair is curly, brush it during your shower to maintain its natural curls.

In general, taking care of your hair needs a balanced diet, a silky pillowcase and a really suitable shampoo. It works for all kinds of hair, every time.

Drying curly hair is the trick to maintaining the curls. Simply wrap your hair with a towel and very gently give it a few rubs and apply a natural cream (not oil replacement treatment). Try almond or coconut oil based products.

A daily wash can cause your scalp more dryness and therefore more dandruff.

STEP UP YOUR BEARD

GAME Beards are all the rage at the moment. But we’ve all seen men with beards that are in desperate need of some tender love and care. We’re not sure about the reason behind these tragic beards, but we’re here to help. Here are some grooming tips and products to keep your beard in tip top shape.

STAFF ILLUSTRATION/SUZAN AL QUASMI

From beard brushes to beard oil, use these grooming tips and products.

• INVEST IN PROPER TOOLS Who doesn’t want to use a fancy razor and finish off with a cool wooden horse hair brush?

• AVOID TRIMMING YOUR BEARD WHILE WET Wet hair isn’t the same length as dry hair and you may unintentionally over trim.

We Recommend: Get an electric beard trimmer. Complete sets with combs and brushes are available at Xtra, Nahdi and Whites Pharmacy.

• STYLE YOUR BEARD ACCORDING TO YOUR FACE SHAPE, NOT WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING The good thing about facial hair is that it grows back relatively quickly; so don’t be afraid to experiment until you get the right look.

Triangle

• WASH YOUR BEARD. YES, WASH YOUR BEARD

• USE BEARD OIL! IT’S A PROVEN CHANGE-MAKER

Beard hair is different than the hair on your head. Try using a conditioner to help soften coarse hairs. Razor bump relief can make a huge difference too.

Moisturizing your skin is also a good step towards healthy facial hair; so when you’re moisturizing your beard, don’t skip your face.

Tell us about the challenges you faced as a female blogger in Saudi. Impersonators are a major annoyance. Sometimes they use my name, pictures and comments and twist them in inappropriate ways.

What do you want to tell our readers about yourself?

Was your family supportive of you being a blogger in this society?

I’m a photographer and blogger who covers restaurants. I started by writing reviews of restaurants and sharing those with them.

My mother was the first person to support me and always had a lot of helpful advice.

Places started to appreciate what I was doing and soon others would invite me over to review their restaurant.

Tell us about the challenges you faced as a female blogger in Saudi. It’s not easy in our society for a woman to go out late or for long periods of time. Thankfully I had a lot of support from the restaurant owners that would make sure I was very comfortable and productive.

MODERN DAY PICNIC By Norah Al Eisa

At Parker’s, you have to work hard to get your food, but it’s so worth it. Before you get to this unique food spot, you have to go on a scavenger hunt to locate the secret key to get in. Amal Al Marri answers questions about this fun restaurant.

How did you come up with the idea for Parker’s? The idea came from the name itself. We realized that parks have been sorely ignored and we wanted to give people a reason to go back and enjoy the beauty of the simplest 48 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

things. So, we came up with the concept of people going on scavenger hunts in places like parks to find the keys.

What are your thoughts on using social media in business?

Social media plays a very important role, especially with our concept. We use Snapchat to facilitate our key hunts and the rest of our channels to listen to guest requests, feedback and critiques, making sure to interact with our patrons and ensure they know they’re being heard.

COURTESY PHOTO

Before you get in, you need to find the secret key.

What’s a must-try at Parker’s?

That would have to be the Choco x Coffee Slider.

What do you recommend for dessert?

Each of our dessert options have their own story and place in our hearts. Lotus Drama: While people thought using Lotus biscuits was just a trend, we believe that it’s here to stay. It’s a controversial stance, hence the drama title. Back to School: A really fun and interesting presentation of large chocolate pencils and sharpener.

Chocolate Chips Volcano: Just like we used to experiment with tastes as kids, this one merges sweet and salty in just the right way. Smores Pzza: Pizza for dessert? The child in us says: why not!

Do you update your menus regularly?

We are constantly innovating and working to present new dishes. Our most recent masterpiece was Mac & Cheetos.

What’s your goal and vision?

We want people to enjoy parks again. And we want them to hunt for our keys in all the parks we can find! Location: Prince Faisal bin Fahd Rd., Khobar Tel: +966-13-8820260 byparkers

TEA-TASTIC JOURNEY How do you like your tea? By Hajer Al Alwan

What makes this tea taste special is the mix of flavors of the special Yemeni Kabboos tea and basil together. According to Al Omda, who served us the teapot, the basil shouldn’t stay long in the teacup or it will ruin the balance of flavors. We enjoyed it in the Heritage Village in Al Ahsa, and as we sat sipping our tea under the soft drizzle of the end of the winter, the experience was unforgettable! DIARIES OF A LAZY PERSON: HOSTING For those who didn’t catch part one of this series, I won’t reintroduce myself because… Well I’m lazy.

Being lazy, or a part-time Narcoleptic for the politically correct police, we react to effort like a cat recoils from a cucumber- check out the videos, they’re hilarious! But human contact and socialization is an essential part of survival. So, like the Darwinian creatures we are, we must adapt to survive. Hosting is always a hassle for me because the bigger the number, the more difficult it is to feed them. I can always put out some chips and tell them to have at it but chips without dip is unspeakable, and I’m lazy, not a savage. Bill Gates once said, “I choose a lazy person to do a hard job, because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it,” so let me break down my fool-proof hosting solutions and tips.

56 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

THROW A POTLUCK

COOKING PARTY

The ultimate hosting cheatcode. If you’re hosting, you might as well make your guests work for it. Have them grab a dish from their house and bring it over. If you have to do the clean up, at least make them participate in the mess. Besides, this method also ensure maximum amount of leftovers for the coming days.

Middle Eastern culture stresses the importance of breaking bread together to cultivate connections. However, try to invite your friends to spend a day in your kitchen and help out with the cooking. This way we’re not only breaking bread together, we’re breaking eggs, space boundaries and, if you’re doing it right, some plates.

Takeout is an obvious choice, but you might want to put some effort into the presentation. Do what most new hosts do and switch the food out of the containers and pretend you made it (not advisable if everyone knows you’re lazy or a bad cook).

FIGURING OUT FOOD LABELS Use nutrition facts to make informed choices about food. By Laura Khalil

These tips and tricks will help you make an informed choice on whether a food product is healthy or not. It is important to note that food products are all different depending on the food category they are in. For instance fruit has a higher level of sugar yet is still healthy 58 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

because of the vitamins it contains. In comparison, candy also has high sugar levels, but is not healthy because it is high in fat and sodium and contains no nutrients. It is easiest to read the label top to bottom, starting with the serving size. Then, look at the “calories” and “calories from fat.” Calories indicate the quantity of energy that is obtained from the food. This section is very important if you are trying to maintain or lose weight.

Helpful Tip

As a general rule of thumb for a 2,000-calorie diet, a food product around 50 calories is low, 100 calories is normal and 500 or more is high. Underneath the “% Daily Value*” is the general suggestion of intake for each key nutrient for a 2,000-calorie diet.

PHOTO/LINA MOHAMMED

Have you ever looked at a packaged food item that had a food label you just couldn’t understand? Food labels are tough to decipher, with terms and sections that can be overwhelming.

A QUICK SUMMARY • Cholesterol is important to produce Vitamin C but too much of it can cause arteries to clot and cause a heart attack.

The following section, which includes the percentage of nutrients in the food, is important because high intake of saturated and trans fats can increase the chance of diseases such as coronary heart disease and cancers. Saturated fats increase cholesterol levels, but trans fats are naturally found in food. Therefore it is important to choose food products that are low in saturated fats. In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, the percentages in this section must remain as low as possible. Still, some nutrients like fibre, protein, vitamins, calcium and iron are vital for your health for different reasons.

to maintain energy levels. • Vitamin A is vital for eyesight and healthy skin.

• Sodium is a salt that is vital for fluid balance but high quantities can cause high blood pressure. • Dietary Fiber decreases cholesterol levels and is necessary for regular bowel movements. • Protein is necessary.

• Vitamin C repairs and rebuilds tissue in order for our bodies to heal. • Calcium is necessary to maintain healthy bones and teeth. • Iron helps the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body.

KEEP THIS IN MIND

“Reduced Fat” has 25 percent or less fat than the normal product would, while “Light” indicates that 50 percent of the fat is reduced and “Low Fat” is a product that has three grams or less of fat per serving.

When Memories Disappear How to care for yourself and others against Alzheimer’s. By Lina Al Faris

Imagine waking up one day and your mind is just blank. It’s a frightening and increasingly common experience. Recent statistics claim that Alzheimer’s disease now affects more than 40 million people worldwide.

Alzheimer's is a progressive brain disease that causes damage to the areas of the brain responsible for memory, thinking skills and language. It is the most common type of dementia.

64 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

But, this disease is a lot more than just simple memory loss. It also affects your mood and emotions. You could have sudden mood swings, suffer from anxiety and stress or even experience depression. Your behavior would change too, causing you to become more aggressive and hostile. Such changes can be very challenging and difficult to handle for both the patient and their caregivers and loved ones, which could lead

to stress, tension or even a breakdown in communication and care. Therefore, it’s important for a caregiver to understand their patient’s behavior, what causes their mood changes and be able to adapt to it and compromise. Caring for a person with Alzheimer's can be extremely hard but we have to stay strong for our loved ones. Atheer Alkhashram is one of our talented local graphic

Earlier this year, Saudi filmmaker Abdulrahman Sundakji directed a film about Alzheimer’s, showcasing the reality of the disease and heartbreaking cases of it in the Kingdom. The film won the bronze aware at the 2016 Saudi Film Festival, and during the film’s tour in Dhahran last May, the Saudi Alzheimer’s Association recognized Atheer’s efforts with her app and guidebook.

Alzheimer's disease was first discovered by German psychiatrist Dr. Alois Alzheimer in the early 1900s. A century later, researchers have yet to find an actual cure. Still, recent studies have shown that changing your everyday lifestyle choices could reduce your risk factors. This includes:

My Mini Solo Bike Tour in

Consider bike tourism for your next adventure. By Tala Alrabiah

72 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

When I rode my best friend’s bike for the first time when I was a little girl, the fear of falling and the thrill of trying to keep my balance fascinated me. I went home that night full of excitement and took the training wheels off my

own bike. I circled around my backyard long past my bedtime, until my mother dragged me inside to go to bed. That starry night, while lying in bed, I decided that cycling would be my new all time hobby.

FRANCE

Going the Distance On My Bike

I recently discovered the potential of traveling long distances with just a bike. You can pedal across countries, from city allies to mountains summits to ocean shores.

COURTESY PHOTO

I found a group of tour cyclers in Switzerland, who planned to bike across Switzerland in 10 days. I arranged a meeting with the group guide in Geneva, but as soon as I explained my modest experience, he questioned my abilities and made me start to doubt myself. He asked if I had experience on a road bike and if I had cycled up an alpine mountain before. Of course, I hadn’t done either of those. Realizing I might have been a burden if I joined the group, I decided not to go. But, I didn’t give up. I decided to go on a less intense bike tour alone, creating my own route for my very own personal adventure. I took my old bike out of our garage, repaired it, and bought the required tools I’d read about. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 73

I saw a group of cyclers from a distance, and as I passed by them, I noticed it was the same group and guide I was initially going to tour cycle with! Passing the whole group with ease was the most glorious moment of my life. It didn’t only boost my confidence, but made me feel powerful. I know now that I shouldn’t have let anyone draw my limits. I am now doubtless of my abilities! After a breakfast of champions at 9 a.m, I headed to Les Gorges du Pont, about 25 kilometers away from where I was living in France. It’s a UNESCO historical site that entails a canyon, cave and waterfall on top of a mountain. According to Google Maps, it would take me an hour and a half of cycling to reach my destination. Little did I know, after one hour of cycling uphill, I would still not even be through a quarter of the trip. Google Maps directed me to a hiking trail, and as I pedaled further into the forest the vegetation become more and more dense. At one point, it became so difficult to bike through I had to get off my bike and walk while pushing my bike up with me. I suddenly heard a loud barking noise, and looked to my right to see a full-grown German Shepherd dog running towards me. I grabbed my pepper spray ready to use it in case of attack, but thankfully, I heard its owner calling its name and it calmed down. More aware of my surroundings, I continued and finally reached a paved road. 74 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

of guys in motorcycles scream something in French; I strained my ears to listen. “You’re only two kilometers away,” they shouted. I laughed aloud. I was breathless and exhausted but I decided to push through.

SOURCE PHOTO/ FRANCE-ON-WHEELS.COM

Finally I arrived at Les Gorges du Pont. The canyon was well worth the journey. After visiting the canyon, I realized that I could not go back home on the same route as it would take too much time and I wouldn’t reach home before sunset. I had to go down on the Great Alpine Road, which was a longer route but was paved all the way down to the lake. It was a downhill ride for nearly two hours. The beautiful Dranse River was beside me. A ride that was supposed to be three hours long went on for eight hours. I continued on pedaling until they were out of sight. After that, Google Maps took me into another forest, with different trees and different ground than the last. It was a muddy trail with a stream running down close by. The sound of the stream, the crisp air and the shy deer hiding behind thin, tall trees made me feel like life had paused. An hour into this magical forest, I reached a paved road called Grandes Alpes (Great Alpine Road). It was grand indeed! I cycled uphill with difficulty and the road spiraled as if it were hugging the mountain. It went on uphill for kilometers, and when I was about to give up, I saw a group

The moral of the story is that you can concur mountains if you set your mind to it. Words can’t describe how wonderful and fascinating my first journey was. Throughout the rest of the summer, I continued to map new routes every day. I visited castles, I summated the highest mountain on Lake Geneva, I was discovering and learning something new everyday.

Tala's Tip Never trust Google Maps. It estimates your journey time based on flat ground assumptions.

A TIME TO CHILL Yanbu Waterfront Even man-made beaches can be good.

STAFF PHOTO / MOHAMMED MIRZA

By Mohammed Mirza

The soft sand disperses as we take baby steps in the cold sea. Calm waves lap the shoreline that is dotted with tire tracks all over, which we later found out to be of the coastguards that patrol the area. Yanbu’s Industrial Waterfront is so well laid out, that it serves as a benchmark for other beach development projects around the country. Designated areas for swimming, landscaped gardens, ample parking and various other amenities, need you ask more? It easily ranks in the top for being one of the best man-made beaches the Kingdom has to offer. Yanbu being a mediumsized city and within it, the Royal Commission which 76 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

houses the waterfront being an even more secluded area, the beach provides ample privacy and makes for a textbook picnic spot for families and singles alike. After a spontaneous decision, taken only a few hours before, we found ourselves passing refinery after refinery on route to Yanbu from Jeddah. On one side were the refineries that were lit brightly and on the other, there was the plain darkness of the empty desert. Some refineries even had a fire burning from the top of the boilers, burning byproducts of crude oil that was being refined there. Our car set on cruise control raced past the occasional small

villages and within a few hours, we ended up in Yanbu’s Royal Commission. After an overnight stay, we headed to Yanbu’s famed waterfront. The crowds here were in lesser numbers, the atmosphere more relaxed, as opposed to Jeddah’s beaches.

After sunset, the crowd shifted from the dark seaside towards the parking lot that is lit by street lights; their picnic continues.

Whatever shade there was, was already occupied by families the trees, the secluded tent-like structures and even the shade that came by the kiosks. By a garden next to the beach we ate food we bought from Al Baik. We actually were hoping for seafood but didn’t come across any seafood restaurants in the Royal Commission area, so we ended up relying on the timetested Al Baik. We were told the seafood restaurants were in the Balad area of Yanbu. After lunch, we crossed the landscaped area of the waterfront and made our way across the coarse sand. Perhaps the landscaped area is to expand further closer to the beach as this sand seems to have been sourced for developmental purposes and is not regular sea sand.

We walked on the coarse sand for a long distance before finally reaching the shoreline. We walked through the shallow waters barefoot, there were hardly any pebbles inside let alone rocks or stones. Without any visible vegetation growing in the water, we can safely say that the water was pretty much lifeless, making it ideal for swimming. Even the little ones can enter the water without the fear of getting bitten by crustaceans or getting their feet entangled in seaweed. From volleyball without nets to our own concocted water sports, we had a memorable time playing by the setting sun. The kiosks nearby serve tea and other food items at high prices; they were the only

food options for miles. We had other items to tick off from our list of places to visit in Yanbu, but the weekend was ending and the journey back to Jeddah was in the back of our heads, so we left soon after with unchecked boxes on our places to see list. Being just around three hours away from Jeddah, we found the waterfront to be an amazing picnic spot for those feeling a little more adventurous Yes, there are plentiful beaches en route to Yanbu but it is the location of this particular beach that undeniably makes the trip worthwhile. BEFORE OIL, SAUDI HAD PEARLS Discover the industry’s rise and fall. By Mohammed Mirza

Before oil, a large portion of Arabia was dependent on the pearling industry. In fact, the Arabian Gulf used to be the largest producer of pearls in the world. Along with other states in the Arabian Gulf, Saudi Arabia too was involved in this trade with Qatif playing a major role. Qatif, however, was not located close to the densest clusters of pearls and pearl divers had to go long distances on boats to reach oyster hotspots. Pearls started being traded with the Ottoman Empire, Persia, and India and even with countries far off in the western world. Pearls became 78 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

a luxury item amongst the upper-classes of society. The pearling season would take place in the summer, with boats coming in from far afield. From these boats, pearl divers would dive depths of almost 40 meters with their scanty equipment gathering oysters from the seabed. The coastal towns on the Arabian Gulf grew wealthier and attracted traders. The pearls were mostly dealt in the barter system in which other goods and commodities were exchanged for pearls. However, the boom in the pearl trade was not to last long.

Pearl oysters occur naturally on relatively shallow banks in the Arabian Gulf. Archaeological sites in Eastern Arabia suggest that pearls have been harvested from around 7,000 years. The pearling industry began to decline in the 1920s with one of the main reasons being the development of artificially produced pearls in Japan. These pearls were produced in abundance and sold for a much cheaper price. However, Arabia was soon blessed with another thriving industry: the oil industry.

How did you start organizing bicycle tours?

My friends and I live in Jasra and we would often meet up on our bikes, cycling to beautiful places close by. When I told people on Instagram that all the pictures I post were in Bahrain, they’d never believe me! So, I thought, why not share these experiences with everyone and show them first-hand? 80 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MARCH 2017

What do your tours consist of?

I cover nature, culture and heritage while at the same time trying to promote healthy living and eco-friendliness. I also organize a picnic, which includes fresh fruits, nuts and sandwiches from Al Osra (one of our sponsors) as well as Arabic coffee and tea from my home.

Tell us about Global Wheels.

What was your source of inspiration?

My main inspiration was actually the character from the Saudi film, “Wadjda.” A 10-year-old girl who goes against all odds and discouragement to pursue her dream of owning and riding a bike. global.wheels

Part of the tour involves picking up vegetables from an organic farm.

I started off with bikes I used to borrow from my dad, neighbors and friends. The bikes weren’t the best quality and constantly needed maintenance. Eventually, I saved up and, with my dad’s financing and my first pay check, I was able to buy good quality bikes and gear. I had three to five tours in the first year, 20 in the second year, and, since October last year, I have already led eight tours. Every year it’s been growing so much just by word of mouth.
