REFORMING

SAUDI WOMEN’S SPORTS Women’s health takes center stage in Khobar forum.

The forum, which was organized by Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Women Development Fund (PSFW), aimed to encourage women sports, raise awareness toward adopting healthy life habits and create more opportunities for physical fitness in Saudi Arabia. “On this day, we are proud of the achievements of Saudi women in all fields, including sports,” said Hana Alzuhair, Executive Vice President at PSFW. “However, we pay special attention to sports as it’s so important for the wellbeing, health and fitness of women. 14 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2017

The great impact of this on future generations is unmeasurable.” The forum included several sessions, the first of which, The Concept of Women’s Health in the Gulf Region, hosted five leading women who are pioneers in the field of sports and fitness from all GCC countries. They discussed the challenges they faced regarding women’s sports

in their countries, how they overcame them and what potential partnerships can be implemented to provide the best possible environment for Saudi women. The second session, titled International Olympics, included three female champions: Mariam bin Laden, a Saudi swimmer; Luna Al Omair, a Saudi fencer; and Balsam Al Ayoub, a Kuwaiti

The third session, Investment Opportunities in The Sports and Athletic Fields, was led by Princess Mashael bint Mohammed, founder of The Empowerment Center; and Sheikha Shamsa Al Maktoum, President of the UAE National Olympic Committee for Women’s Sports. They addressed investment opportunities in the Saudi market, how to encourage investment in this field and how to sustain development. The final session was a special talk on happiness and positivity that was given by Sheikha Intisar Alsabah, Chairperson of Al Nuwair Positive Initiative (NPI).

She discussed the effect of sports on people’s attitudes and lives. The second day of the forum comprised of workshops in sports, health, entertainment and nutrition, as well as educational activities for kids and people with disabilities. The Women’s Health Forum

is of special importance as it marks a major reformation of the Saudi sport world. It marks the beginning of granting licenses and creating femaleonly gyms, when previously women’s gyms only operated unofficially under salon and spa licenses. DESTINATIONKSA.COM

BUSINESS

WHO’S WHO

Business Transformation Murhaf BuKhamseen, a biz whiz in everything from construction to restaurants! By Hajer Al Alwan

Tell us about yourself.

I am a manager, planner, strategist and businessman. I graduated from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. I joined my family business in 1992 for three years under our construction department, before I went to the US and earned my MBA with a specialty in finance.

How did you start your business career?

Are you still using your engineering background? I am, but to a limited extent. Being an engineer allows me to think in the sense of how engineers think. I don’t let any piece of information pass me without analyzing and scrutinizing it.

16 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2017

STAFF PHOTO/HAJER ALALWAN

As soon as I came back from the US and agreed with my brothers to overhaul the company. I can proudly say that we took the ready mix concrete company from two small plants to nearly 30 plants within the span of 15 years, becoming one of the leading companies in the business.

What are the services you provide in ETE?

I’m happy and proud to see many young Saudis becoming much more confident and aware of the developing environment around them. — Murhaf BuKhamseen

Although Eastern Trading & Contracting Establishment (ETE) is mostly concerned with construction, building and engineering, it is still considered to be one of the most diversified construction groups. We provide services in construction and engineering, building materials, real estate, and even investment. Recently we started the cornerstone of our latest sector, food and entertainment, by opening Big Chefs restaurant. We are also preparing for the opening of Operation Falafel.

What are plans for ETE in the near future? Apart from trying to diversify our sources of income, our goal is to become linear and trim some of the fat we have accumulated over time.

Any challenges you’d like to highlight?

We are in a highly competitive business, and that’s why you really need to adapt to any new market conditions. There were projects of a certain size that required us to work as a group (regardless of department or division) in order to meet the high demands of the project. A big example of that would be the Riyadh Metro project, which is one of the biggest projects in Saudi and the biggest public transportation project in the world at the moment. Gone are the days when you can find mega projects

everywhere. We can only find projects that are small to medium sized. In order to adapt to this kind of change while being a group of our size, we unfortunately had to face a great decline in manpower. Many of our colleagues at the company were asked to leave even though we treasured their contribution to our growth. We knew that without being agile and adaptive we wouldn’t be able to sustain our leading market position.

What advice would you like to give to your readers about the journey to success?

Work hard, work hard and work hard. Believe in yourself and keep learning because without education you can’t reach anywhere. The secret to success is the willingness to take risks and learn from our failures. In fact, I think that without failing, we can never really succeed.

Final thoughts?

I think the Saudi youth are working hard to get involved in the business sector. They’re becoming more aware of the fast-evolving and developing environment, and the growth possibilities. The country needs their involvement and the kingdom is supportive of startups, so I encourage the young generation to adapt to a realistic business module and be courageous enough to take a chance with their idea. Chase your dreams. Web: ete-group.com

BUSINESS

Tell us all about yourself. I was born and raised in Khobar and attended finishing school in Switzerland where I got to practice French and learn a few things about business. That time was a starting point for me. I had a year off during which I interned in accounting and finance in my father’s factory, before finally attending and graduating from Oxford University.

How did you start your successful journey in the world of business?

A Business Journey From caviar to fashion, Deena Al Faris grows success everywhere. By Hajer Al Alwan

18 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2017

It took seven years for the first caviar to be produced, but he got it certified from the Ministry of Agriculture and we eventually started exporting to Russia. At the time, I was running the development and marketing of the business, then eventually I rose to take on the CEO position. Recently I stepped down from running the business while still retaining a spot in the board of directors.

STAFF PHOTO/HAJER AL ALWAN

I have a great father who believes in me and my potential. Around the time of my graduation from university, my father sold his vehicle factory and started a caviar farm with the purpose of tackling a new challenge and bringing something new to the area. After doing a lot of research on it and testing the possibility of running it here, he made it work.

You recently switched into the fashion industry?

COURTESY PHOTO

I couldn’t re-invent the wheel in any way when it comes to fashion, but I like to challenge myself. My dream is to see us having academic resources, like a real cut and sew and pattern-making facilities in Saudi one day. With that in mind, I started my own clothing line: Qamrah.

DESTINATIONKSA.COM

19

What is the idea behind Qamrah? As much as I appreciate the traditional concept of fashion startups here, when I started Qamrah I wanted to create something new. Being one of many other Saudi-working women, I wanted to create a clothing line that provides working women with chic/ easy-to-slip-on wear. Qamrah is named after my mother and means “moon” in Arabic. The moon goes through phases, so I thought it was the perfect name since women go through phases whether on a daily or monthly basis.

What do you attribute your success to? When I think about the success of Qamrah, I can’t attribute that all to myself without thinking about the

20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2017

endless support I get every day from my loving husband. He believed in me when I had nothing to prove it was going to work.

What advice can you give to Saudi women who are starting up their own business? I’d like to say to all the women out there that you shouldn’t worry if you failed once or twice, as long as you have your ideas and conviction. As long as you wake up for it every morning, you will get there. Yes, you’ll face challenges, but it’s all a part of the journey. Web: qamrah.com

BUSINESS

How’s Your Savings Plan Get your first installment out of the way.

22 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2017

?

Whether it’s for living or investment purposes, buying real estate is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make. It is common knowledge that the majority of buyers cannot afford to make a full payment for real estate in a single transaction. Thus, they turn to real estate financing paid in installments between 15 and 30 years. In this respect, the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) issued a mandate to lower the cost of the required first installment from 30 percent to 15 percent. This is one of the first steps that SAMA is taking towards alleviating the citizen’s acquisition of real estate financing, which in time aims to directly solve the housing crisis. Engineer Hattan Tasji, Head of the Real Estate Investments Department at SEDCO Holding Group, said, “Implementing the initiative is in the pipeline and the goal is to approve about 85,000 applicants and finalize their mortgage loans with banks.”

It is necessary to provide a plan that illustrates the desired amount of savings one month at a time.

Here are the six optimal ways to provide the first installment: 1. Save

This step is one of the most difficult steps, yet it’s just as effective. Saving helps avoid loan costs or losses from the sale of some assets. On the other hand, it takes longer than any other alternative.

2. Sell Assets

It might be considered wise to sell high value assets, such as gold, in order to pay for the first installment. This can help avoid debt or the time it would take to save.

3. Give Up Leisure Time

While it may be difficult, giving up leisure investments, such as traveling, is a necessary sacrifice. It would be wise to save the money intended for a vacation and save it for the prospects of owning real estate.

4. Borrow from Friends or Family

The above options are not always easy to achieve. If you find them difficult to apply, borrowing money from friends or family can be an option to pursue. Although it is considered a loan, it is an interest-free loan that does not require fees. It has the benefit of a bank sans the formality.

5. Acquire a Loan from Work

Another option is to acquire a loan from your employing company. The method to repay is through deducting monthly installments over a given period. This option will require you to budget your monhtly expenses. Ensure that you set a proper agreement with your employer in advance so you're protected. The employee loan option benefits both parties; employees are able to manage their expenses, and they stick around and stay more focused on the job.

6. Acquire Personal Financing

Acquiring personal financing to pay for the first installment is considered the least effective in terms of savings. However, personal financing can be important when there are no other opportunities to obtain from the previous steps. Subsequently, interest and fees will be applied. The Author: Hattan Tasji Engineer Hattan Tasji is the director of local and international Real Estate Investments at SEDCO Holding Group. He looks at land/property developments, divestment, income portfolios, asset allocations, and joint ventures.

THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY You cannot top Haya’s weekends, ever.

Be fearless; you’ll never know if you never go! - Haya Al Samari

By Hajer Al Alwan

Petroleum system analyst in Saudi Aramco by weekday and surfer, hiker and fearless expedition guide by weekend, Haya Al Samari is an outdoor adrenaline junkie extraordinaire.

I’m also a certified advanced diver and part of a running team called Jude.

The fun began when she started taking trips with Hussak, a group that offer exploration trips to hike the outskirts of Oman, Alaska, Mongolia and many more exciting locales. The first time she went on a trip with the group, it was a life changing experience. “The whole time, I felt like I was in a movie. I was staggered by the amount of scenery in Oman and I wondered why I haven’t been there before.” Bewitched by the magic of her previous trip, Al Samari went a second time with the group on a surprise trip where they didn’t know where they were headed. During that trip, she met founder, Ali Husain, for the first time.

- Haya Al Samari

During an eight-day excursion in the Red Sea, diving multiple times a day and swimming with dolphins.

“I was actively helping fellow travelers and Ali noticed how passionate I was, so he challenged me to hike in very risky locations and I beat him every time.” From that

moment, Al Samari became a part of the Hussak team. “When Ali asked me to join the team, at first I was very reluctant. I felt like I was putting myself ‘out there’ and I was worried about my family's and my manager’s reaction. Still, in the end I made it work!”

Being in nature is Al Samari’s main motivation and driver with each trip. “I feel strange if a week passes without me going hiking in Oman. Being in nature makes you addicted to it and it makes you appreciate everything you have.”

Hussak was volunteering money to collect tracking collars for snow leopards with the help of the organization. An endangered species, the initiative aimed to study the lives of these animals by tracking them.

“Every weekend in Oman, I meet people from diverse cultures where they’re all just being their bare selves because we all came for the same reason. It takes someone special to go to these trips.” Being a guide taught Al Samari how to disentangle from everything shallow in life. It allowed her to gain the power of changing people’s lives in a short period of time. The change she sees in the travelers when they first experience these trips makes her heart flutter every time. While camping, their team might run out of food, “but when we share a meal, it tastes even better!” One of her most remarkable trips was when she went to Mongolia during the winter with the World Wildlife Fund. 26 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2017

every Saturday, when she got back home and laid in her bed staring at the ceiling, instead of lying in a sleeping bag in the mountains staring at endless starry skies.

You’d think Al Samari would be exhausted and tired each week, coming back from such intensive weekends of adventuring and trekking. “When I go to work every Sunday, the tired me will just browse the photos of my weekend on my phone and regain all my energy. Every moment is worth it.” mykindofridays

Along with experts from the organization, Husain, Al Samari and three other members of Hussak spent that trip going out to the wild every morning and coming back at night looking for snow leopards. Enduring many challenges, including temperatures reaching -40 degrees, Haya says it was all worth it whenever they saw a snow leopard in its natural habitat. A particular highlight of the trip was when they stayed with a Mongolian family to learn about hunting with horses and eagles. “For a week or so, we were living in a very raw environment. We ate and drank in bowls, and had a cow peeking at us in the toilet!”

LIFE IS A JOURNEY Meet Sharqiya’s not-so resident nomad, Albara Al Ohali.

Albara Al Ohali is a storyteller on the go, looking at his own life in terms of chapters. “Each of us has a unique story to tell, writing it as we go along. The idea that we’re all a copy of each other is something that I hate so much, so I try to defy it by this storytelling metaphor I live by.”

By Hajer Al Alwan

Al Ohali’s first chapter started with his birth in the US, where he lived for six years before his family moved back to Dhahran. He earned a degree in software engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, and after a year of working with Google in Dubai, he decided to leave everything behind and embark upon a journey of self-discovery. He bought a one-way ticket to Japan with only a backpack and sleeping bag in hand.

According to his personal story, Al Ohali is now entering Chapter Six, with the previous chapter including his fouryear exploration of Japan. “I always tell people to try to let go of something by choice. Sometimes we take settlement for granted, whereas somewhere, someone else has lost it and not by choice.”

The only place that I was completely staggered by besides Japan was Sweden. When I got there, it felt like it had been a long time since I’d been to a country where I couldn’t speak a word of their language. It was as if I went back to being a kid and I was completely okay with not understanding everything I saw. I looked at everything as if it were my first time. — Albara Al Ohali

Al Ohali’s favorite destination is Hokkaido, Japan. “It’s just so vast and beautiful, and contains numerous elements of nature in one place but still maintains this nifty organized Japan within it.” To him, it felt as if he were outside of Japan but still wasn’t. “The best milk I ever tasted was when I was in Hokkaido.”

friend Abdulrahman Baatheem walked 800 kilometers from Imari to Tokyo in an 18-day trip. “I don’t get to do this type of traveling a lot, but it’s really nice. It’s literally the way our ancestors used to travel. If you do it walking, it’s slower, but it grants you the chance to see and take in everything that you cross paths with on your way.”

Al Ohali and his companions camp for the night to rest before continuing their voyage into the Southern Sahara Desert.

We asked Al Ohali what he has learned in his travels so far. “If I can sum up what I learned from traveling to one thing, it would be that we’re all humans and we’re all the same in a way. HOME IS WHERE THE PALM TREES ARE A pictorial journey of one woman’s heart and home. By Hajer Al Alwan

I grew up among palm trees and water springs. I played hide and seek around citron and pomegranate trees and grape vines. I made little tent homes under vast lime trees that filled our family farm.

My childhood was awesome.

50 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2017

STAFF PHOTO/ HAJER AL ALWAN

I can still feel the fresh earthy air filling my lungs as I played tirelessly around the farms as a little girl. We would run around looking for wild dandelions to blow, or stare deeply into watering pools, mesmerized by froglets as they swam by in the still water.

My parents would tell us stories about gigantic turtles and endless, natural water springs. They’d talk about the times they hunted frogs and rode donkey carriages when they were children, and the nights at their grandfather’s farm where they laid their little tired bodies and let their sleepy eyes shut at the sight of stars in the clear night sky. Any Hasawi could surely relate to my wistful emotions towards our oasis of a home. But, for the rest of Sharqiya, I figured I’d try to capture those emotions on camera and show you around the closest place to my heart.

All grown up and busy with the trappings of life, I still try to steal moments when I can go back, sit in our farm with a cup of red tea in hand, and get lost in utter reverie of times past but never forgotten.

CINEMATOPIA An interview with one of the Saudi Film Festival’s directors. On March 27, The Saudi Arabia Society for Culture and Arts (SASCA) organized its 4th Saudi Film Festival, hosting it at (and in collaboration with) the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran for five days. During the festival, Saad Khedr was honored for his great contributions to the media development and filmmaking industry in the Kingdom. Additionally, every day the event held beneficial workshops for aspiring filmmakers given by various professionals from all over the globe. There were four categories of competitions that filmmakers submitted their works into: Narrative Films, Documentary Films, Student Films and Scripts. A diverse group of administrative members and experts from the GCC film industry were invited and assigned to judge the work of the competitors. 52 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2017

During the event, we managed to snag a wonderful and insightful interview with one of the directors involved in the festival, Ali Kalthami.

speaking, I was surprised and impressed; the festival was well thought out and organized. Since my work is mostly online, I feel quite isolated from the film industry. So, I’m grateful that the festival gave me an opportunity to connect (and re-connect) with many in the industry. Ali Kalthami / Mohammed Al Doukhi

Kalthami is aSaudi comedian, actor and director. He cofounded C3Films, as well as Telfaz11, a production house with a growing network of YouTube channels that stand millions of subscribers strong, with videos that have been watched over half a billion times. He directed the film “Wasati” which was featured in the festival. The film retells the story of a true event about extremists attacking a theater in Riyadh, addressing it from a different perspective.

What are your thoughts and reflections on the Saudi Film Festival ?

When I came, it wasn’t to judge, but to observe with an open mind and heart. Frankly

What do you think of the quality of the films?

Some of them were very good. In particular, the filmmakers from Al Ahsa stood out in areas such as storytelling, directing techniques, cinematography and acting. Even the experimental films were great. The films revealed a lot of potential professional filmmakers bursting with passion and vision.

What’s your main source for content? What ideas do you want tackled? I always work from within. I think there are many great stories in Saudi Arabia that have never been told. Historically, oral storytelling had existed among Saudi tribes and I know a lot of

stories that would be epic narratives. Naturally, there can be limitations on productions and actors, as well as sensitive topics. But, the complications of these oral stories and histories are still relevant in our modern communities. So, we need to be sensitive to our audience and society. Saudi Arabia is a relatively new nation and we have to learn more from the past and present in order to tell our stories in the future.

Advice to filmmakers?

You should work nonstop and tirelessly. The first 10 years in this career is the experimental phase. Mistakes are unavoidable, but through them you learn and develop and grow. Most importantly, be willing to hear and adopt new ideas and perspectives during that experimental phase. Alexander Woodman is an award-winning writer from Los Angeles Press Club. MASS EFFECT Andromeda The Promise of Golden Worlds Andromeda Diverges from the Milky Way and onto a new galaxy, but it does very little to recapture the essence of its predecessors. It sets up an interesting story but is held back by mediocre dialogue, poor pacing, and choices with no proper impact for almost half of the game. However, the game has an excellent and flexible combat, complemented with great exploration, and a moral choices system that's more diverse than its predecessors' Paragon and Renegade one.

Breath of the Wild marks a radical departure for the series. It embraces the formula of open world games beautifully, without compromising it's soul or essence, paying homage to the original Zelda on the NES. Exploration is encouraged, as the world is filled with secrets. It's also packed with smartly designed puzzles, simple yet satisfying combat, and mechanics that complements the exploration in engaging ways. However, the limited stamina and the weapons finite durability felt irritating in the beginning. Dungeons aren't memorable, but the shrines make up for it in unique ways. Breath of the Wild is bold, beautiful, and great.

It might not be the golden Mass Effect game, but it's still an engaging and fun chapter in the series.

TURKISH DELIGHT

BIG CHEFS, the restaurant for those with big appetites. By Hajer Al Alwan

We started off with an oldie but a goodie: the Mezze plate – a mixture of hummus, mutabbal, pickles and grilled halloumi. Then we tried the Goji Berry and Avocado salad which really hit the spot with its delightful mix of flavors. For the main dish, everyone talked up the Yogurt Kebab so we simply had to try it. At face value just layers of bread, kebab, tomato sauce and yogurt, this dish transformed

into something greater than the sum of its parts and left us delighted and satisfied. And then there was dessert. The best baklava we’ve had. ROSEWOOD’S ROMANTIC DINNER The kind of evening every couple deserves to share.

When it comes to romantic evenings, Rosewood’s Romantic Dinner is hard to beat. It’s that breathtaking and fulfilling experience that couples all over Jeddah have been waiting for. Situated sky high, at the very top on the hotel’s open-air lounge, the Romantic Dinner is a quiet retreat with an unparalleled and vast view of the city. After taking the elevator to the Executive Lounge on the 20th floor, we took a quick flight of steps up to the 21st floor and were greeted by the endless sky that danced with colors of the sunset over the busy city. Petals of fresh fragrant roses were scattered all over our round candlelit table. Once seated, the pleasant waiting staff served us non alcoholic bubbly that we enjoyed with nice, quiet conversation.

As the sky darkened and brought out the stars, we savored the different courses of our dinner with music playing in the background. What’s amazing is that the privacy of the lounge allows couples to relax and enjoy each other’s company without distractions. Aside from a stunning view and seating, Rosewood’s Romantic Dinner includes a sumptuous set menu of your choice. The cuisine options include Chinese, Japanese, Arabian and Seafood.

Whether you’re celebrating your anniversary, a birthday or any achievement or occasion, a heart-shaped cake of your choice will be prepped to mark the celebration. But that’s not all; you can surprise your other half with a beautiful flower bouquet, which is also provided by Rosewood. Our romantic Rosewood experience is something we want every couple to share. Reserve your evening with Rosewood, it’ll be priceless! Location: Rosewood Jeddah Hotel, Corniche St., Al Shati’ Dist. Tel: +966-12-2607111 Web: rosewoodhotels.com/Jeddah rwjeddah Rosewood Jeddah

FOOD TRUCK FEVER Delicious food roams the streets of Sharqiya.

Back in the day, the only “food truck” we’d see around our neighborhood was the ice cream truck (if we were lucky). Now these trucks are all the rage and come bearing all kinds of decadent goodness. From burgers to waffles, we’ve rounded up a list of our favorite food trucks.

Carnival

Like what its name suggests, Carnival is all about the delicacies you’d find at carnivals, such as waffles, crepes and ice cream. Our personal favorite is their churros. We can’t get enough! carnivaltruck

12 MONTHS to a Healthier You Add or remove a habit every month.

TOPIC OF THE MONTH:

Detox, the right way!

As part of the 12 Months to a Healthier You campaign, this month is all about detoxing. We are continuously bombarded with the latest juice detox fads, which usually lack any form of scientific evidence, yet we are still swayed to try them out because of the associated simplicity, and allure of a promised ‘quick-fix’.

76 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2017

Until there is substantial scientific evidence that juice fasts contribute to better health, we should avoid anything that puts the body through immense strain. Unfortunately, new trends have even taken it a step further by linking detoxing with weight loss. Keep in mind that any “weight loss” during such fixes (typically for three days)

STAFF PHOTO/ ABDULRAHMAN BA'ALI

By Mai Kholief

DID YOU KNOW Detox towards a healthier you by making small changes that have an everlasting effect. My favorite ways to detox: • Drink more water. • Exercise more. • Eat more greens.

mostly just get rid of water weight, and the weight will just as easily return a few days after the detox is over. Cleanses are usually low in protein, but we all need a daily supply of protein to build healthy immune cells and muscle recovery. Consequently, you do not lose fat and you do not become healthier with a juice fast.

Rather than opting for a quick fix, make lifestyle changes that last. Go for natural and organic foods that will reduce the intake amount of processed preservatives. One of the easiest ways to clean out your system and remove toxins is by drinking lemon water. A glass of warm water with lemon in the morning is refreshing and a great Vitamin C boost for the immune system.

• Opt for organic foods when possible. • Get a good and intense massage. • Replace sugary drinks with green tea. • Incorporate superfoods such as quinoa into your meals. • Cut out refined sugars. • Eliminate foods with additives and preservatives. • Go meatless once a week.

A LIFE OF YOGA Calm your mind, hone your body.

Child’s Pose

Hajer Al Alwan

As we sat down with Marleni both a yoga teacher and student for life - we were mesmerized by her calming positive energy and her passion for the practice of yoga.

“The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘yuj’ meaning to bind, join, attach and yoke, to direct and concentrate one’s attention on, to use and apply. It means the discipline of the intellect, the mind and the emotions, and the will. A poise of the soul which enables one to look at life in all aspects evenly.” Modern yoga derives from the ancient 6,000-year-old practice of Hatha yoga in India. Hatha is the mother of yoga and it focuses on the structure of alignment in the body parts and feeling the connection of the body and the soul. All other types of yoga fall under it, including vinyasa, ashtanga, bikram and restorative yoga. 78 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2017

The Rhumba Revolution Dancing your way to a fitter life.

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD

Rhumba is a physical exercise discipline born out of South America and is currently enjoyed all over the world. Its popularity stems from its flexible nature, where all the practitioner has to do is enjoy the music and have fun with dancing.

80 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2017

BENEFITS OF RHUMBA • It has a pain-relieving effect on the nervous system, pumping you full of endorphins that leave you feeling happy and satisfied. • It alleviates stress and helps you feel more relaxed. • It increases your energy, making you feel invigorated and ready to take on the world. Due to the variety of movements in this exercise, it increases your body’s flexibility, tones your muscles and sheds off your fat. The main difference between Rhumba and many other physical exercise routines is that you don’t need weights or accessories to do it; all you need is a little music, a little creativity and a lot of fun as you bust out those dance moves. For the best experience, use a room with wood flooring, a decent sound system, and a playlist of your favorite music for an hour. If you’re a beginner, we advise that you start with basic moves until you achieve better flexibility and increase your cardiovascular and pulmonary strength. BUSSING AROUND BAHRAIN Exploring Bahrain on a public bus. By Ahmed Almulla

This bus is for everyone who wants to explore Bahrain for a day. Starting early morning from Bahrain International Airport, I rode the bus that takes you to Muharraq Terminal for a 300-fils single ticket. At the terminal, you can get a GoCard that gives you a full-day pass for an additional cost of BHD 1.100. I took the bus to my first stop, MANAMA SOUQ, and reached there within 12 minutes. I had breakfast at HAJI CAFÉ 82 DESTINATION SHARQIYA MAY 2017

(Gahwa), which a two minute walk away. This place is more than 60 years old and serves all kinds of Bahraini foods; I ordered a traditional eggs and tomato dish along with tea with milk (Chai Haleeb). This came down to only 800 fils and it was delicious and filling, especially since the dish comes with a couple of complementary Naan breads. Leaving Haji Café, you can take a walk around the traditional souq market nearby, beginning from the Bahraini landmark, BAB AL BAHRAIN and

going all the way up to Gold City and beyond. This is where you can shop for souvenirs, spices, sweets, electronics and clothing.

Muharaq Bus Station

Beit Al Quran Block 306

Bahrain is rich with history, so for my next stop I chose to go to KHAMIS MOSQUE, the oldest mosque in Bahrain. To reach there, I took a 20-minute bus ride from City Centre Mall to Manama Bus Station, then switched to another bus that took me to Khamis Mosque in about 20 more minutes. Khamis Mosque is a heritage site that’s free to explore and I encourage you to soak in its history and culture. I soon after made my way back to Muharraq Terminal which took a little over half an hour. AL RAYYAN CAFÉ is a nice spot which serves an excellent Machboos Hamour until 5 p.m. I also recommend checking out HALWA SHOWAITER, a shop that specializes in traditional Bahraini sweets (get a box of mixed delights for BHD 2-3). I made my final leg back to the airport in 10 minutes. The entire journey was convenient, affordable and, above all else, enjoyable. Highly recommended for all tourists.

Next, I walked to BEIT AL QURAN in Hoora, arriving there

within five minutes. Entry at Beit Al Quran is free of charge but people are encouraged to donate in support of the museum. It hosts some of the most valuable Islamic art collections and Quranic manuscripts that go back for centuries, Next stop on my bus route?

CITY CENTRE MALL. The mall experience is pretty selfexplanatory; cafes and shopping, cinemas and of course restaurants.
