We feature an interview with Saudi public health pioneer Dr. Zohair Sebai, who gives us insight on the improvements our healthcare industry has seen, a testament to this wonderful trend of putting our health on top of our list of concerns. Under the patronage of Eastern Province Deputy Governor Prince Ahmed bin Fahd bin Salman, Scitech hosted Under Our Care Forum from Oct. 16-19. The forum addressed selfdevelopment, family values, and how both would ensure a safe and wholesome society. Lecturers and speakers from different disciplines within the community were present during the forum, contributing to its success.

IMPROVED HEALTHCARE IN THE KINGDOM An Interview With Public Health Pioneer Dr. Zohair Sebai During the 1950s, only a couple of hospitals had 10 Saudi physicians, which did not even represent 10% of the total number of physicians in the country. But after five decades, there was a rapid growth in public health, and currently there are 462 hospitals and 21,000 Saudi doctors raising the ratio to more than 25% overall. Saudi Arabia is experiencing a major demographic and epidemiological transition, represented by a growing burden of non-communicable diseases, while population expectation of quality care services has been noticeably going up. In addition, quantitative and qualitative development of healthcare services have led to the improvement of reproductive health, maternal and child healthcare services, the reduction of mortality rates and immunization, and to a decrease in vaccinepreventable diseases and the eradication of poliomyelitis at the national level. We have more hospitals, hospital beds, primary healthcare centers and colleges of medicine – the health budget soared to unprecedented levels. However, the orientation of health services remain curative. There are many efforts to apply preventive and promotive medicine activities, and we are looking for more.

It is recommended to stop eating when 80% full. Do you think Saudis are following this recommendation?

Obesity and its related health problems are a global epidemic, and Saudis are following the global pattern. Proper health education can help to a great extent in solving obesity, as it would translate into healthy lifestyles. This is the most difficult part of health education. From a Qur’anic perspective, Allah says, “Eat and Drink but not to excess.” Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) advised his companions to eat moderately, but if one must add more to his

Why exercise alone when all these awesome groups exist? By Hajer Al Alwan

“About five years ago I was obese myself, and I decided to lose weight,” said founder Hassan Al Kaff. “I went to the gym every day, but I found it much more boring than walking. So, I started walking everyday instead, and that’s when I thought of starting to walk as part of a group.” This initiative aims to emphasize the importance of the sport of running/walking, educating individuals on the benefits of walking for weight loss, body strength and physical and mental health. The team also arranges

workshops to educate others on choosing the right running shoes and the proper way of running. The group regularly hold monthly marathons and challenges, as well as daily walking schedules (except for Thursdays). “People keep asking me why I make all this effort to organize these marathons and walks when I don’t get anything material back from them,” said Al Kaff. “The answer is simple: it’s the moment a person tells me, for instance, that his wife is very thankful to me, because I helped him change his lifestyle. The moment I see the good change I did, that’s what I do this for.” Now, more than 40 people

AL BATEEL DIVERS It all started in 1997 when Haitham Khayyat, owner and founder of Al Bateel Divers Center, joined his uncle on a diving course. “Afterwards, I went to Jubail with a fellow beginner,” he said. “We dove far from the island and failed to call others for help, so we had to get back on our own. It was nice, but a very challenging experience.” He didn’t dive again until he met a diving instructor a few years later. “The secret

to being a passionate diver is a good instructor and a good training center,” said Khayyat. The instructor inspired him to continue his training until he became certified by the Professional Association for Diving Instructors (PADI) as a diving instructor. But he didn’t stop there. After eight years of training more than 100 people each year, Khayyat earned the advanced certification of Course Director. Then, a few years ago, he had to set up shop with his own license in order to take on more training jobs that were coming to him and thus Bateel Divers Center was born.

Today, the center arranges weekend trips and four- to six-day diving trips inside and outside the Kingdom, at locations ranging from Jubail, Jeddah, and Dammam, to places like Ghardaqah, Sharm El Sheikh, Sudan, Maldives, and even Florida in the United States, training divers from beginner levels to Course Director level in association with PADI. The center has two dedicated instructors and 5-6 affiliated instructors, training both men, women, and children (above 10 years old). WALKERS FOR WOMEN Launched in November 2016 and licensed by the General Sports Authority as the first walking team for women in Sharqiya, Al Ahsa Walkers is a charitable initiative that nutritionists Yasmin Bujan and Amani Al Omair co-founded based on the belief that every change has to start somewhere. “When I first came to Al Ahsa in mid-2016, it was for a job in King Faisal Hospital,” said Bujan. “I met the head the of my department and we discussed issues many of our patients suffer from, like obesity and diabetes. As nutritionists, it's hard to deal with these issues without introducing

exercise plans and stressing the importance of being active.” They had heard a lot about walking teams around the Kingdom, so they decided to start one exclusively for women and got it licensed by the Chamber of Commerce.

Today the group has walks every Wednesday in King Abdullah Environmental Park (or Al Ahsa Mall during bad weather). They’ve also participated in many nutritional health awareness campaigns such as Your Heart, Maryam, Step and Al Haraka Baraka.

DARRAJ CYCLING GROUP Darraj is a charitable initiative that spreads awareness about cycling as a way to stay fit, have fun and even give back to the community. But in 2012, it was simply a group of guys getting together to ride their bikes as a way of staying active. “At first, the guy at the bicycle store would tell customers about us,” said Qusai Al Qrainees, member since 2013 and currently group leader. “We would go to the store and introduce ourselves, encouraging people to join the daily rides.” The group grew steadily over the years and in 2016, they became licensed by the Association of Volunteer Work. Now the group boasts nearly 1,500 members, some of whom cover more than 1,000 km per week. “We have scheduled rides around the cities of Sharqiya every Sunday to Wednesday,”

JOUD RUNNING CLUB Joud Running Club was founded by Abdullah Al Joud, national coach at the Saudi Arabian Athletic Federation. With a passion for running, Al Joud started his athletic journey in 2005 when he was 29 and, by the time he participated in the 2012 Olympics, had been the number one runner in the Kingdom for four years in a row. Around the same time that he had caught the initial spark of running, Al Joud met Ian Willson, the coach he attributes his success as a runner to. “I tried joining the Saudi National team, but they rejected me for my age,” said Al Joud. “At that point, I knew there was only me to believe in myself.” Challenged and motivated to do more, he participated in his first international competition in 2009, and ran in several events throughout the years since then, including winning 2nd place in the Gold League. In 2014, he broke the Saudi record in Copenhagen. After learning about training from a running camp in Morocco, he came back to Dhahran and started training a group of people in Saudi Aramco, before finally founding Joud Running Club. joudrunning

Twists are great for detoxifying, lengthening the spine and massaging your abdominals and oblique muscles. • Keeping the hips pointing forward, twist to the right with your upper body, holding onto your chair bars (if not, onto the right leg and hip). • Keep your neck relaxed. • Breathe into it for 30 seconds and then repeat on the other side.

Vinyl Mode’s Solitude A new album in collaboration with Sarah Taibah By Nadia Sakkal

Jeddah-based electronic music band Vinyl Mode is releasing their new album, Solitude. A collaboration with young artist and singer Sarah Taibah, it tells the story of a woman who isolates herself from the noise of the world to reflect on her circumstances. Alone in a big city, the heroine subconsciously reminisces over the past and ruminates on the hopelessness of the present. 62 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2017

We talked to Vinyl Mode’s DJs and music producers Moe Nassar and Harris Mavromatis, and Taibah, to learn more about the album.

What were the album’s beginnings?

Sarah Taibah: The songs were originally poems I wrote as part of my healing process by writing out a hurricane of emotions and feelings; I didn’t intend to share them,

much less include them in a music album! I was sharing my poetry with a friend who suggested I take my words to another level, and she arranged a meeting with Vinyl Mode. In 2 hours, we had a first draft for a song based on my first poem, Rubbama, which I read on a voice note and sent over to them. Less than a week later, we had the track, and I couldn’t believe it was me!

instruments in sound production – I’d like to give a shout out to the talented bass guitarist Ataa Alahadab who did a great job with the songs Contradiction and Another Lifetime.

What do you hope to achieve with this album?

Harris Mavromatis: If people understand what we’re trying to communicate, that’s the biggest achievement. I want our music to mean something to our listeners. I hope it talks to them; people usually communicate feelings, emotions and thoughts through different platforms, and music is our platform.

What future projects are you preparing?

Where did you record the album?

Harris Mavromatis: We have a studio at home, which contains all the necessary equipment. That’s where we do most of our work. Since this is this first time we record vocals, we didn’t have the equipment so we collaborated with Libra Studios in Jeddah.

What makes this album different than your previous ones?

Moe Nassar: It’s always good to come up with your signature sound. We had poems written in Arabic but didn’t want to use Arabic instruments as European DJs were already 64 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2017

doing that. We reversed it, using Arabic words that were read out as in a monologue instead of sung. This album speaks of the hidden talent we have here in Saudi. Many “bedroom DJs” are producing great music at home but don’t know where to go with it. This album says: if we can be great producers, so can you. What do you personally love about this album? Moe Nassar: Everything in this album is organic and it’s the result of different artistics minds coming together, like a puzzle. We used real

France instantly conjures images of high fashion, romance, Parisian lights, baked goods, art, and la belle vie â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the good life, the overarching theme the French have always aspired towards. Last month, I was taken on a journey by experts of the cream industry Cream of Europe, to explore firsthand that good life. My trip began in Lyon. Lyon is considered by many to be the gastronomy capital of the world, having produced chefs that revolutionized not just French cooking, but the whole experience of enjoying a meal. villages and farmhouses. In fact, Lyon is the center of a beautiful and interconnected ecosystem of towns, farms, and, most importantly, people whose varied passions come together in a perfect symphony of life.

Cheese Cave at Fromagerie Janin

is complex to make – the aging process alone requires dedication and attention and can last up to 36 months.

A dining experience at the L’Auberge Ancienne (The Old Inn), a three-star Michelin restaurant situated in the tiny town of Vonnas, an hour south of Lyon, means an authentic family meal – red-and-white cloth cover the tables, preserved art line the walls, and classic French dishes are served.

We visit many family-run cheese businesses on this trip, one of them in the AuvergneRhône-Alpes – the Fromagerie Janin in Champagnole. Here, Comté is worked on by an affineur – a person who ages cheese – who, instead of just storing cheese, ripens it to bring it to its peak texture, flavor, and aroma. The Janins age their cheese in an underground cave beneath their shop.

Of course, no French table is complete without a plateau à fromage – the French and their cheese are inseparable. Take Comté, a cheese that

“You have to use all your senses to examine the readiness of the cheese. Only after inspection from 5 cheese masters do we determine whether the cheese has aged to perfection.” Now, Comté, like all cheese, is made from milk. Both Monsieur Arnaud and Mathieu Janin stressed the importance of the milk used and the role it plays in the taste of the cheese. Ferme du Beau Pré in Champagnole is where the Janins get their milk. This organic farm, situated on 100 hectares of land and home to 45 cows is run by Dominique Faivre. This milk is collected exclusively by the local Comté makers. The cows’ diet and daily nutrients are taken care of religiously. “It all comes out in the cheese. It all starts with the pastures, the cereals the cows consume,” says Faivre.

A former military fort built under Emperor Napoleon’s reign, today it hosts 140,000 wheels of Comté cheese, kept in variations of caves. JureFlore is known for its Morbier and Mont d’Or, but its crown jewel is none other than Comté.

Cheese aging is a specialty all on its own, and Monsieur Arnaud is the affinage king. Each cave does something different, with variances in humidity and temperature. “It’s alive, this cheese. It’s a living organism and responds to the environment it is kept in,” Monsieur Arnaud explains.

A trip to charming Annecy, specifically a visit to Fromagerie Gay, introduced us to owner and cheesemonger Pierre Gay, who specializes in selling cheese, butter, and other dairy products. He, too, ages his cheese in a small underground cave with a glass ceiling for people to peek through. What’s spectacular about Pierre is his unbridled love for cheese. “You have to love what you do. What’s the point of doing anything if it isn’t for love?” It’s one thing to have such love and passion passed down across generations, and to see a heritage respected and carried on. It’s quite another to see someone stepping up and into the world of cheese,

Our Country Calls On Us Exploring 13 regions of the Kingdom

On National Day weekend, students and staff of Jeddah College of Advertising (JCA) turned the patriotic occasion into an exploration of Saudi Arabia’s major regions with their travel campaign Our Country Calls On Us. Salwa Bankhar, Head of Industry Relations, explained, “Traveling helps in selfdevelopment, and we as a society tend to lean towards exploring other countries. With this initiative, we are bringing self-development to our local grounds. The youth play a big part in the country’s development, and in order to develop it they need to grasp its beauty.” 74 DESTINATION SHARQIYA NOVEMBER 2017

Dr. Haneen Mohammed Shoaib, Dean of JCA, explained the campaign’s inspiration, “The initiative comes from the vision of the Chair of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Abdullah Sadeq Dahlan, to contribute in promoting internal tourism as a national duty. Through this, the university expresses its loyalty and belonging to Saudi Arabia and its leadership. We hope this campaign becomes the catalyst of many creative campaigns to celebrate the wonderful Kingdom.” Our Country Calls On Us was able to deeply influence the youth’s sense of patriotism and their pride in their nation.
