JAMAL AKKAD
The Godfather of Dreamers
ISSUE 24 DECEMBER 2017
FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome to the end of the year, Sharqawis! 2017 has been an interesting year. The number of changes we’ve seen this year in Sharqiya, the Kingdom, and even globally, have been staggering. From the Royal Decree allowing women to drive next year to the assignment of Mohammad Bin Salman as the Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, this has definitely been an exciting year. People have varied in their reactions to these transformational changes. Yet, the potential positive impact on our country, and Sharqiya, cannot be overstated. With that view in mind, we, here at Destination, have chosen to devote this issue to hope, positivity: the “good vibes”, if you will. From a man who has made it his life’s calling to help dreamers make those dreams come true, to a musical troupe whose mission is to preserve and share Sharqiya’s fishing and pearling culture via music, we have put together a beautiful collection of stories and articles that we hope will encourage you to see our world in a brighter light. It is exceptionally easy to be negative and critical, but it takes courage to hope. I hope that this issue serves as sayonara to 2017 and helps frames your thoughts for 2018. None of us know what to expect, but we can choose how to perceive and frame each and every experience.

Abdullah Al Hawas Sending a positive message through storytelling By Dalia Darweesh
This month we shine the spotlight on Abdullah Al Hawas, a man who chose to give back to his community in the most beautiful way possible: he chose to instill in children the values that will make them happy and productive members of their societies via storytelling. To do this, he created Kan Yama.
He currently works as a content creator for the center, designing, executing, and ensuring the quality of several such programs. As Abdullah put it, “Instead of working on machines, I decided to be a contributing factor in bettering the community.” 12 DESTINATION SHARQIYA DECEMBER 2017

Abdullah’s story began shortly after he graduated from Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He joined Saudi Aramco and, after a brief stint as an engineer, Abdullah began developing programs for the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture. It was here that Abdullah discovered his passion and love for developing cultural programs.
Abdullah started Kan Yama back in 2009, dedicating an hour a week to reading books to children at cafes. Seeing how storytelling lit up the eyes of his young audience and brought smiles to their faces as he took them into magical worlds, Abdullah knew he had found his calling. The idea eventually grew and evolved throughout the years, resulting with a bigger Kan Yama team. Currently, the team consists of more than 300 men and women, ranging between the ages of 20-30, who choose to give back to their communities through a shared love of storytelling. These people use stories and interactive games to inspire more than 900 children weekly in 17 different cities within the Kingdom. Their reach also includes cities in Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain. Abdullah’s ability to grab children's attention with a story that is simple and meaningful, and the good feels this gives him, is the foundation that Kan Yama was built on. Abdullah is driven and motivated by creating an encouraging and inspirational environment for both children and adults in the community. It’s all about building friendships, and creating sustainable community paths to improve the environment we live in.
One of Kan Yama’s weekly storytelling sessions
Expanding on these ideas, Kan Yama has also developed and provided courses and workshops for children between the ages of 4 and 12. They have also created and produced musical plays that DESTINATIONKSA.COM

have been performed at national events such as the International Book Fair and other government-sponsored events, including one by the Ministry of Health and General Entertainment Authority, which drew a crowd of over 5,000 attendees. Kan Yama’s efforts to have a positive influence on the community has been nationally recognized, and the organization is set to receive the prestigious King Khalid Foundation Award this year. Abdullah believes the reason Kan Yama is so successful is due to a critical factor: trust. When we trust in a child’s ability to understand and process complex values,
they, in return, trust us. Abdullah believes that we can easily shape a child’s thoughts and creative abilities, every time they acknowledge and notice the trust they see in our eyes, and he tries to achieve that through storytelling. With the busy lives that we lead, and the different difficulties we go through, it’s nice to take a step back and go to the beauty and simplicity of life. Such an experience pushes away negative feelings of selfishness or materialistic thoughts; it makes us go back to pure, righteous values. Email: kanyamaprg@gmail.com kanyama_prg

THE STARS Mishaal Ashemimry talks about her inspiration and fight for science.
The Unaizah desert is located close to the Saudi city of Unaizah in the Najd province. While unknown to many around the world, this desert is actually very close to Mishaal Ashemimry’s heart. The American-Saudi aerospace engineer and founder of MISHAAL Aerospace, a company based in Miami, Florida in the US that specializes in launch vehicle/rocket development for space applications, recalls the moment during her childhood in Saudi that sparked something in her, “It was dark and cool with the faint whispers of the camels in the distance. I looked up at the sky; it was illuminated with very dense stars. And that’s how I was inspired.”
she’d revisited Unaizah desert, Ashemimry lit up with a smile and said, “I have never been back there since that moment, so I need to revisit. I would absolutely go in a heartbeat.” Ashemimry is based in Miami, Florida, where she founded MISHAAL Aerospace in 2010 to pursue her ultimate dream of building rockets. She is currently looking for investors for her company. Talking about her plans, Ashemimry says, “If things don’t go the way I want them to then I will most likely go back to get my PhD. If things do go well, I’d be really interested in seeing some space related items in the Middle East and Gulf in general. It would be nice to see a space agency or something spacerelated happen here.”
Inquisitive as a child, Ashemimry couldn’t stop asking questions about the stars that had become her biggest curiosity. She wanted to know what the stars were, “The best way to know them is to go to space, and how do you do that? Rockets can take you there.” This childhood curiosity grew into an education and profession. When asked if
However, certain restrictions on American companies would make it difficult for Ashemimry to bring her company here, “There are a lot of policies, especially in aerospace. It’s a very sensitive and regulated field.”

should not let obstacles stop them from achieving their dreams, “You’re going to face some very complex and difficult obstacles along the way, especially as a woman, that may deter you from where you need to go. You just need to focus on your vision. People who face criticism and are put down, they are the ones who get there. They’re the determined ones.” The highlight of Ashemimry’s trip was the event at Dar Al Hekma University where she gave a talk on her work and journey in aerospace, “People seemed very receptive. I felt like they had something to gain from it, which to me is the whole purpose of having a strong online presence.” The young aerospace engineer believes in taking initiative and fighting for what makes your heart beat, “Essentially from a passion perspective, because a lot of the time the world around us can hinder that. What’s interesting to me is that some people are not even aware of these sciences that are out there. When they discover it and like it, they start reading more and it creates this bug, this spark that makes them yearn to learn more.” That spark for Mishaal Ashemimry was looking at the sky in the Unaizah desert, “All I needed was the stars to inspire me. A MODERN-DAY PHILOSOPHER Entrepreneurship, Bob Marley, and the wisdom of Jamal Al Akkad. By Noura Al Joaib
We often feature business owners of either young startups or multi-generational family dynasties in Destination. We often talk about their personal journeys, their struggles, and of course, their successes. However, for every successful business owner, there are hundreds struggling to make it. These men and women deserve a voice. Their stories are just as important as those who have been successful. In fact, their stories may even be more important to you than the business owners that have made it. It is from our failures, and the failures of others, that we can truly learn and grow. So, who will give the silent majority their voice? The moment the door opens, the first thing that catches my eye is his perpetual smile. He looks like a man constantly on the verge of laughter. His eyes convey a passion and drive to help the thousands of entrepreneurs he’s worked with, whose dreams he believes in as strongly as they do. He understands them and feels for them. And more than that, he is here to help them. 18 DESTINATION SHARQIYA DECEMBER 2017
This, ladies and gentlemen, is Jamal Al Akkad.
STAFF PHOTO/ ALZAHRA ALDAWOOD
Al Akkad has founded several entrepreneurship-support organizations, lectured on entrepreneurship across the Kingdom, and been an entrepreneur himself. He is articulate, quick to answer, and well-read. By his own accord, he has had a string of failures in his life which he has gotten back up from and persevered to become the national icon of entrepreneurship in the Kingdom that he is today. I asked Al Akkad to sit down with us to give us perspective on the entrepreneurship ecosystem.
Al Akkad exudes an infectious love for life that carries over into everything he does.
The first myth he debunks is that entrepreneurship means starting a business. Entrepreneurship, as Al Akkad eloquently puts it, is a way of thinking that embodies innovation and creativity; it means approaching problems in non-conventional ways with “no taboos in front of your way of thinking.” Taking a creative idea and commercializing it, is another matter entirely, one that requires the entrepreneur to “come down from 50,000 ft. and start with what is doable and practical.” It’s this step that many entrepreneurs neglect, and why many startups fail. However, Al Akkad believes that failure is a necessary step in eventual success. In his love to help people achieve their dreams, he pushes them to learn from their failures rather than fear them. He encourages them to persevere, and asks them to reflect on DESTINATIONKSA.COM

Dreamers are the most human of us all. Everything starts with a dream.
their experiences, because he believes in their capacity to find the answers within. Al Akkad admits that he often does not know the answers, but then again, neither does anyone else. He famously quotes Bob Marley: “Don’t let them fool you, or even try to school you.” This is the second myth he debunks: no one knows the formula for success, it is something you must figure out for yourself. And, more importantly, your success will be different than anyone else’s success, so don’t try to be like someone else. 20 DESTINATION SHARQIYA DECEMBER 2017
Al Akkad also points out that entrepreneurs in various regions of the Kingdom have unique traits that they capitalize on. For example, Sharqiya has long been influenced by the presence of Saudi Aramco and SABIC; these influences have led to entrepreneurs that are extremely committed and disciplined. Entrepreneurs from Najd, on the other hand, have long been adventurous, brave, and willing to take calculated risks. Consequently, the greatest economic growth in the Kingdom has come from
Najd. Hijazi entrepreneurs have a unique ability to capitalize on and create new markets, as a consequence of a millennium-old heritage influenced by Hajj and Umrah. As such, Hijaz demonstrates the greatest economic diversity of any region in the Kingdom. You won’t find this regional analysis of entrepreneurship in any report or textbook. This is Al Akkad’s own interpretation of a field he has spent his life working in. He has leveraged his knowledge of our history and his experiences to weave a philosophical analysis of the

ecosystem. In fact, if you were to describe Jamal Al Akkad in a few words, it would be that he is a modern-day humanistic philosopher. He believes that our society would do well to reflect more often on our history; there is a lot that can be gained from knowing what we accomplished in our past, knowledge that can foster our belief in ourselves to achieve more in the future. When I ask Al Akkad who has made him the man he is today, who influenced him personally and professionally, he starts with his greatest
personal influence: his mother. With love and compassion, he professes his gratitude to her for raising him to be a fighter with the heart of a poet. He then turns to his professional influence, and says “My Grandfather”, whose name he speaks with reverence and awe. It is from his grandfather that Al Akkad learned to love life, to focus on his own growth, and not to judge others; essentially, the principles that make Al Akkad the man he is today. When I ask him whom he idolizes, he mentions Martin Luther King, Jr., because of
his “I Have a Dream” speech. Al Akkad strongly believes the world needs more dreamers. To illustrate this point, Jamal Al Akkad references King Abdulaziz, who, to Al Akkad, was a dreamer; a dreamer who dreamed of a much better world for his people in the early 20th century. He was a visionary, an entrepreneur in his thinking, and today, we are all living the realization of King Abdulaziz’s dream. Web: Evc3.net Email: jamal@evc3.net Jamalalakkad

Saudi Arabia is no doubt a major contributor to new business ideas and enterprises in the Middle East. The Kingdom has launched Fund of Funds as a major financial boost to SMEs. This program is an investment fund backed by the Public investment Fund of Saudi Arabia with a capital capacity of SR 4 billion. The Fund of Funds is expected to actively engage the private sector in the Kingdom, directing government support towards domestic investment in SME’s and boosting their access to capital by investing in venture capital and private equity funds. SIGNIFICANCE: This move is expected to increase the country’s GDP by a grand 400 million riyals and provide around 2,600 jobs by the end of 2020. 22 DESTINATION SHARQIYA DECEMBER 2017

DIGITAL CURRENCY TEST RUN FOR SAUDI BANKS
Saudi Arabia is one of the very first nations globally along with the UAE, Sweden and Estonia to pursue the establishment of a national cryptocurrency. The virtual currency will be implemented and traded only between banks as of now. The pilot project will be monitored closely to analyse the overall contribution of a digital currency to the sector and possibilities of its further application or termination. The numbers are expected to increase to 58,000 jobs and a GDP of 8.6 billion riyals by the end of 2027. SIGNIFICANCE: Cryptocurrencies are getting a lot of attention worldwide for their benefits, such as low issuance cost and ease of transport.
THE SAUDI CITIZEN’S ACCOUNT PROGRAM: BY SAUDI FOR A SAUDI
The Saudi Ministry of Labour and Social Development has launched the Saudi Citizen’s Account Program earlier this year. The program will ensure that the benefits are received
SIGNIFICANCE: The aim is to ensure the financial stability of all Saudi citizens and families and to cushion them from the side effects of the current economic reforms being carried out by the Kingdom.
SUBSIDIZED HOME FINANCE FOR SAUDIS: SUPPORTING HOMEOWNERSHIP
The subsidized housing loan program is an extensive effort by the Real Estate Development Fund (REDF) to encourage home ownership across the Kingdom. The program helps cover the total applicable cost of interest on the loan amount for citizens with an income of SR 14,000 or below. The program will partially cover the applicable cost of interest for citzens earning a higher income. SIGNIFICANCE: By covering the profit margins of the lender, the program offers affordable home finance for eligible citizens, in addition to a fast real estate finance option that takes a maximum of 5 years, as opposed to the average 10year period. Conversations with an Artist A journey among the cosmos. Artist: MARIAM BUKHAMSIN Form of Expression: ABSTRACT ART
Tell us about yourself.
When did you realize you had to create something of your own? To be honest, I never felt like I was chasing art, but rather that it found me. I began developing my vision almost three years ago. Through art, I was able to carry this vision of sharing my unique work with people.

STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA AL DAWOOD
I'm an abstract artist and Master’s student in Teaching Methodologies of Art at King Saud University. My passion in art helped me teach it in Al Ahsa to elementary students for six years.
Do you have any special rituals before or during the creation of your art?
Total isolation from everything but my art.
Would you like to recommend one of the books that inspires you?
Scientist Carl Sagan's book Cosmos: A Personal Voyage is one that influenced me personally. I admire how he wanted to enlighten people about the spirituality of science and his explorations of the aesthetic. I try to do the same with my artwork.
What is your favorite art piece?
observed the pieces in depth and even created theories about it. This is the kind of conversation that I‘d want my art to stimulate.
Who’s your favorite artist?
Since I do not want to be confined to just art itself, I would have to pick Carl Sagan, again. As I said earlier, I draw inspiration most and usually from scientists.
How would people describe you?
In a few words: quiet, spiritual, calm, and unique – similar to my work.
You’re at a restaurant to meet with people. Who are you meeting for dinner?
Firstly, Omar Khayyam. An extraordinary philosopher, poet, and mathematician as well as a man of peaceful nature. The other two would be Stephen Hawking and of course, Carl Sagan.

Bukhamsin’s favorite piece
My painting of the body and universe is my personal favorite as I painted it without any preparation, which is unusual for me. I felt as if some magical powers of the universe were guiding me. I felt a deep connection with it, which is why it's closest to my heart.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by philosophy, spirituality, religion, and most importantly, science. Science tries to dissect or study the physical structure of the universe, while art, the moral structure of it.
What kind of dialogue does your art create?

KHALEEJI FOLKLORE UNVEILED By Noura Al Joaib
You’ve been to a concert, right? When the stage is set up to showcase the band members’ larger-than-life personality, the dazzling kaleidoscope of twirling lights is synchronized with the special effects, and the speakers are set up so you can hear every single note. Have you got the picture in your mind? Good. Now, throw

it all away, because that is the exact opposite of what I’m going to tell you about today. Instead, imagine a darkskinned man in his 50s, wearing a cream-colored thobe with a sleek black vest and wizar wrapped around his waist, swaying to a rhythm set by the drums held by some members of the 10-man group he obviously leads.

Exclusive interview with leading local folklore band Al Rayah
This, my friends, is Abu Daham, and he, and his Khaleeji musical troupe, Al Rayah, are a sight to behold. To put this in context, let’s take a step back into a time when fishing and pearling were the lifeblood of Sharqiya. Back then, men would embark on voyages to hunt for their livelihood, leaving their wives, children, and loved ones behind for months at a time. These trips could last four to five months, and would offer no guarantees to the sailors or their families. Sometimes these men would return with a trove of pearls and secure their families’ futures for a year. On these occasions the returning boats would sail their flags high, and the fishermen’s voices would carry across the
waters to their eagerly waiting families on the shores, whose own voices would rise in song, welcoming their men back home. Other times, these brave men would lose a friend to the dangers of the sea, and they would return home with their flags at half-mast, their somber silence foreboding the sad news that some wife, mother, or sister would be dreading. To ease the pain of separation, and to keep their spirits up, these brave fishermen and pearl hunters would sing. They would use whatever musical instruments they had available, or improvise if they didn’t have any, to set those songs to a rhythm. Often, they would sing as they worked, drawing fishing nets from the Gulf, hoping for a good catch for
A live performance at a local event
His shemagh, rarely seen in Sharqiya’s streets today, accentuates the authenticity of the verses he sings with a huge smile on his face. His words draw you into tales of adventure, longing, and, occasionally, sacrifice: the everyday life of a fisherman. His melodic voice rises with the music produced by an eclectic collection of instruments, melding in perfectly till his voice, and that of the rest of his troupe, make you feel, for a brief beautiful moment, that the adventure is yours. the day, or to inspire the pearl divers before they disappeared beneath the suface to the depths, seeking the elusive Danah, the largest and most valuable of all pearls. These songs were more than a form of entertainment for the sailors; they were an integral part of their identity, their selfexpression, their lives, their struggles, and their sacrifices. 32 DESTINATION SHARQIYA DECEMBER 2017
Today, the world is different. Yes, fishing and pearling is still part of Sharqiya, but it is waning in an age where more people work for corporations and the difficult lives of fishermen and pearl hunters are no longer a necessity. Yet, in progress, there is loss. It is for this reason that Johar Daham Al Dossary, or Abu Daham as you know him, has
dedicated his life to preserving the culture of his ancestors since time immemorial. A man with a constant smile on his face who can always make you laugh, Abu Daham exudes energy. He has inspired others, the rest of Al Rayah, to dedicate their lives to sharing their culture and history through musical performances that feel more like a play than a concert. There are characters, settings, and plots that are implied more than articulated, but that doesn’t make them any less compelling. The group members draw you into their collective story via

the instruments, the melodic chorus, or the beautiful engaging voice of Al Nahham, the main poet. As wonderful as it is to be part of Al Rayah’s rendering of traditional Khaleeji folklore, you are still in for a pleasant surprise. The musical troupe has not only dedicated themselves to preserving the Gulf’s musical heritage, but they have expanded their knowledge to incorporate traditional folklore dances and songs from all parts of Saudi Arabia. Al Rayah is truly nothing less than a group
of men who have taken their love of culture and music and made it their mission to share their love with the world. Their passion and energy has seen them perform in every corner of Saudi Arabia, include Al Janadriyah, and even internationally in the United States, China, the United Kingdom, and France, to name a few. Abu Daham summarizes it best: “Art is fun, art is beautiful". And while he constantly draws you into his troupe’s performances, if you look carefully, you’ll see
moments where he gets lost in the music, moments where he isn’t singing for you anymore. In fact, he isn’t even aware that you’re there. He’s lost in a past that is long gone, a past that exists in his mind, but is just as real to him as it was to his ancestors. It is those moments that are most beautiful; it is those moments that drew me in and made me feel what it must have been like to live in a simpler time when music was who we were, not something we listened to. “AN APARTMENT CALLED FREEDOM” BY GHAZI AL GOSAIBI A book review by Kalimat Literary. the readers with several plotlines about growth from youth to adulthood. Al Gosaibi shows us his poetic side by opening up each chapter with lines from Al Mutanabbi’s poems, which add to the richness in the story and serve to foreshadow events unfolding in the chapter.
“An Apartment Called Freedom” is the first novel written by our late and beloved Ghazi Al Gosaibi, the Saudi poet, diplomat and minister, who indelibly left his mark on our history and culture. The novel portrays the lives of several Arab male students in a Cairo apartment in the ‘60s. As it narrates their different perspectives and perceptions, as well as evolving experiences with love, religion and politics, the storyline primarily presents 34 DESTINATION SHARQIYA DECEMBER 2017
Most of the main characters did not evolve much beyond the first worldview they held, and they remain flat characters. This is true except for the protagonist Fouad who proved to be a truly round character. While his roommates remained largely true to their principles and ideals, Fouad journeyed through several ideas and ideologies before he convincingly settled for the position he embraced at the end. In our discussion of the book, we unanimously appreciated the conversations between the characters the most. They gave us a glimpse into the lifestyle, cultural codes and vision of Arab youth in the ‘60s, and how we contrast and differ from them today today. An interesting question we wondered about was how different the novel would be if it were about a Freedom Apartment inhabited by
DID YOU KNOW Many critics and readers claim the novel to be Al Gosaibi’s autobiography, and this was later supported by his son Suhail in a TV interview, in which he admitted that the novel was inspired by his father’s experience in Cairo.
Arab women, not men. How would their conversations and experiences have been different, and how would it compare to today? This is one of those books that can be re-read and enjoyed several times as you progress through life, for in each step you will find yourself relating to a specific character or possibly to all of them at some point. The reader's level of maturity and experience in life contributes a lot to how the book is perceived. It will mean something different to someone who is young, and someone who is old. THE ESSENTIALS
Five food categories to eat daily By Sara Al Kuwaiti
Here are five categories of food you should include in your diet every day to up your health game and make you feel energized, full, and happy.
• LEAFY GREENS
You had to have known that leafy greens would be on top of the list because of all the beneficial vitamins, minerals and fiber they provide your body. Spinach, kale, arugula, parsley and lettuce are examples of greens that can be added to your meals. Other than eating greens as a salad, you can add it to anything without affecting the taste of your food, such as in smoothies, omelets, sandwiches and wraps. A healthy gut is the cornerstone for good health and any source of probiotics at least once a day will be showing your gut that much needed love. • PROBIOTICS
• ANTIOXIDANTS
Berries (especially goji berries) and cacao nibs are the best foods for offering antioxidants that help to combat diseases. You can easily enjoy them with your breakfast smoothies, parfaits or oatmeal; you can snack on them alone or with nuts as a homemade trail mix; or just sprinkle them on top of your salad for lunch or dinner.
• CALCIUM
As we get older our bone density slowly declines. Daily doses of calcium from our foods give us strength and make our bones stronger. Non-dairy milk like almond, coconut, oat, and soy are great sources of calcium. You can use plant milks the same way as you would cow milk, such as a liquid to your smoothies, cooking oats with it or with your morning coffee and tea.
• OMEGA-3 FATS
Omega-3 rich foods lower blood pressure, increase brain functions, relieve depression and lower the risk of cancer. Top animal sources can be found in salmon, tuna and sardines. Plant-based sources include flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds and walnuts. You can add 1-2 teaspoons to your smoothies, oatmeal, yoghurt parfait, or sprinkle them on top of your sandwich or salad. You may have noticed that many of the foods mentioned can be included in your breakfast first thing in the morning. What better way to kickstart your day than knowing that you’re packed with nutrients already? All items mentioned can be found in Danube, Tamimi Markets, Alosra and Abazeer.
Why not get into the habit of buying your greens weekly from a central marketplace? Try visiting the Dammam Vegetable Market on a Saturday morning and you’ll be spoiled for choice. Location: Al Anud near Jalawiya, Dammam

LET’S TALK ABOUT DYSLEXIA The learning difficulty no one is talking about. By Shaistha Khan
68 DESTINATION SHARQIYA DECEMBER 2017
It took Abdulaziz and his family 15 years to realize that he was suffering from a genetic disability called dyslexia, a learning difficulty in which the brain takes longer to process letters and string them into words and then sentences. For a dyslexic person, the letters appear to “move and dance” on the paper. Simply put, due to a miscommunication between
the brain and eyes, dyslexia directly affects memory, speed of processing information and the ability to organize and sequence alphabets and letters. Early signs of dyslexia in children include slow speech development, blinking and rubbing the eyes when reading, depression, aggressiveness, and also short concentration spans. Unfortunately, these symptoms go largely unnoticed
COURTESY PHOTO
Fifteen-year old Abdulaziz is a gifted child, excelling in poetry, arts and even gaming. However, reading out words from a piece of paper has always been a big challenge for him. When asked to read from a newspaper, Abdulaziz will become visibly upset, stressed and anxious. His grades suffered and his parents are always called in by the teacher for his poor performance in class.
Zainab Al Khudairy
Medically Speaking…
Zainab Al Khudairy, a pediatric orthoptist (eye specialist) and certified dyslexic therapist, holds the cause close to her heart— she has been working on raising awareness of dyslexia in the Kingdom for the past 11 years. She has worked with 150 dyslexic children over the years and also has also worked with schools, teachers and parents by conducting presentations and campaigns on dyslexia.
until higher grades, and its association with poor academic performance may lead parents to believe that the child is just being a child. Additionally, it’s been established that the lack of standardized Arabic tests might be one of the reasons that dyslexia cases go unnoticed and untreated. An unpublished research paper in Saudi Arabia indicates that 15-20% children affected by dyslexia are not treated.
For teachers, Al Khudairy suggests investing in some additional time with the child and building on their natural talents. “It is important to understand that a child with dyslexia is gifted in other fields— Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison both were dyslexic— and teachers and parents need to encourage their strengths,” she explains. “Teachers can help their students by breaking down tasks, which will help them remember information easily.” For parents, she suggests they
go back to the basics (language phonetics) with the child. As for treatment, the British Dyslexia Association believes that 70% of the treatment comes from education and increased awareness, whereas 30% of the treatment can be through special ChromaGen lenses (colored lenses) that can help dyslexic students see. Al Khudairy is currently the only eye specialist in the country who is certified to prescribe these lenses. There are some organizations that work on improving the learning disabilities situation in the GCC. These include the Saudi Learning Disability Association and the Kuwait Dyslexia Association. Walking through the Ruins of Khaybar A journey through time. By Mohammed Mirza
There’s so much to see in Saudi Arabia – for instance, after spending a night in Madinah and two hours of driving north out of the city, its famed date farms blurred in the distance to give way to the arid desert and eventually the town of Khaybar.
Taking a by-lane off the highway, we reached the old part of the city – a bewildering sight as the road snakes through dark ruins that have bountiful palm trees growing amongst them. The city used to be a major food basket for neighboring regions. 72 DESTINATION SHARQIYA DECEMBER 2017

The ruins are preserved well, despite some of them being almost 1,500 years old. Khaybar once housed fortresses, with powerful families controlling each one. Today, it is hard to identify the fortresses, but seeing the sturdy construction of the
remains, we can only imagine their impregnability. The town didn’t seem to have a proper layout – the roads were just wide enough for cars to pass through and the dwellings were built in random clusters. These clusters were, at times,

should definitely be on a Saudi bucket list. The place is resplendent with history, the kind that somehow stays with you for long. Just when we were about to leave, we saw a tourist bus stopping by, and as they stepped out of their buses their faces had much the same bewildered look that we had when we first entered the city. adjoined with storehouses and stables. Numerous dwellings consisted only of a single room. The entrances and windows were blocked, so we couldn’t see what they were like inside. The dark basalt rocks – likely sourced from the volcanic fields of Harrat Al Khaybar nearby – that the houses are made of give the town a distinctive and somewhat eerie look. The whole town can be explored on foot in an hour. Some even explore it whilst sitting comfortably in their air-conditioned cars, but to get a real feel of the place, an onfoot experience is required. HISTORIC KSA
The author shopping in Hofuf, 1978
OLD HOFUF For a long time now, even before arriving to Saudi as a 22-year-old engineer on my first assignment, I was captivated by the ancient oasis town of Hofuf. It is mentioned in the Bible, and I had read that the old market hadn’t changed much for millennia, so it was one of the places I looked forward to visiting in the Middle East. In 1978 and 1979, I lived in Abqaiq and worked on Aramco construction sites for a US contractor. During that period, I visited Hofuf seven times. On our one day off work (Fridays), different friends would join me on forays in the Eastern Province in a borrowed company pick-up truck without 74 DESTINATION SHARQIYA DECEMBER 2017
air conditioning. We brought our new cameras and a young man’s sense of adventure. An hour’s drive south of Abqaiq was the oasis of Al Ahsa, with its vast groves of date palms, bisected by narrow roads. A short distance from Hofuf’s crowded streets, it provided shady picnic spots and an irresistible opportunity for a quick swim in the cool, clear waters of its irrigation canals. A bit farther, Jebel Qarah, with its silent caverns and steep, dusty trails, rewarded climbers with spectacular vistas in all directions. Coming from suburban California, I found Hofuf to
be an eye-opening experience. I would wander and lose my way in the labyrinth of narrow alleys of the old Qaisariah Souq. The same old silversmith greeted me on several visits. I would sift through his bucket full of what appeared to be ancient silver ornaments, pendants, rings, and bracelets. On one occasion, I purchased a triangular, Bedouin-style pendant mounted with a large red, semi-precious stone and a row of small silver balls on short chains dangling from the bottom. The price after vigorous bargaining: SR 90. Around the corner, we chanced upon fruit vendors and the “women’s market” with its

handmade baskets, fans, and weavings. On the nearby streets of the Al Koot District between the souq and Ibrahim Palace, we encountered locals who were as interested in us as we were in them. I smiled
and said “Assalamu alaikum” to a group of three young boys and motioned for them to pose for a photograph. They agreed, but suddenly a fourth boy pushed his way in, determined to join the fun. The boys proudly showed me that they had inserted pins through the surface skin of their fingertips, careful not to penetrate too deeply. Perhaps, it was a rite of passage for them. When I returned to Saudi and visited the Qaisariah Souq in 2016, I discovered that the souq had been rebuilt after a devastating fire and restored to its previous splendor. Strolling through the alleyways, my family and I shopped for

antiques, gold, and spices, including frankincense, myrrh, and saffron. We relaxed in a traditional coffee shop and snacked on warm chickpeas in oil and sipped sweet tea. How pleasing it was to see that, nestled within the sprawl of a modern and bustling city, this memorable place of my youth remains the heart and soul of Hofuf. The Author:
