HAYA AL AGEEL A rising star in the business ecosystem By Noura Al Joaib
On a typical day, you’ll find Haya standing in front of an auditorium full of bright-eyed young men and women. She’ll stand in front of the crowd, giving each and every person her full attention, and tell them, with unshakable faith, how they can shape their lives into something of their own design. Entrepreneurship is Haya’s forte, and she dedicates her time and energy into helping startups turn their dreams into a sustainable reality. You’re just as likely to find her in Khobar as you are in Jazan, Qassim, or Riyadh. She is relentless in her drive and her passion to help as many people as she can. If there is one quality that defines Haya, it is her bravery. The reason I call Haya “brave” is that, when she first set off, she was very young, and had limited experience and

qualifications. Yet she had a burning desire to make something out of herself. With nothing but her ambition and drive to do more and be more, she pushed herself to become someone with the guts to step forward and stand in an auditorium in front of 300 people and explain something she didn’t have a lot of experience doing. She has made mistakes, learned from them, and grown as a woman, whose belief in herself and unrelenting perseverance earned her the respect of both her young target audience and those more experienced in the entrepreneurship ecosystem.

The quality I admire about Haya, above all else, is her loyalty. That might sound unusual, until you realize that loyalty is the foundation of leadership. Haya understands that you’re only a leader if you can inspire loyalty from those you lead, irrespective of the actual position you hold. It means you have inspired these people, have given them something to believe in. Haya’s loyalty to that kind of leader is unwavering, as opposed to others, who exploit their position to try to “get ahead.” Finally, Haya is someone who likes to be informed, but is also compelled to inform others. It is this quality that has made her exemplary as a trusted facilitator and trainer. As her knowledge of entrepreneurship expands and grows, so do the topics of her talks, workshops, and training programs for

aspiring entrepreneurs. With unwavering faith, a rare understanding of leadership at such a young age, and the burning desire to help others to reach their potential, Haya is one of the few people I admire. I know that there will be a day when each and every person will know who Haya Al Ageel is and speak well of her. I’m just lucky to be one of the first. hayalageel
Currently, Haya is a Public Relations and Marketing Specialist. She has delivered more than 20 different workshops, and trained more than 1,600 men and women in various business development fields. Haya hopes to establish a Marketing Consultation Agency to support startups across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

14 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JANUARY 2018
Colombo, Sri Lanka is probably not a place you would expect to find a copy of Destination Sharqiya. Yet, that is exactly where Rachna Korhonen, the U.S. Consul General, or CG for short, of the Eastern Province in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, received her first two copies of the magazine from her predecessor. “This is where I’m going!” CG Korhonen told her friends, back in Colombo. After serving for three years in Riyadh, CG Korhonen was excited to be back in Saudi Arabia: “I always knew I wanted to come back. I love the culture. I loved my interactions with Saudis and the support I received from them.” With over 13 years as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, and 20 years of corporate experience before that, she knew her time in the Eastern Province would put her “in the best job possible at the best time possible and in the best place possible.”
several cities in Sharqiya, and looks forward to visiting more. “People are very easygoing and welcoming.” She has attended dozens of local community and formal events, and met hundreds of people. “I feel like I already fit in,” she said. Then adding with a laugh, “ana Sharqawiah!” With her corporate background, she has taken a special interest in getting acquainted with the business community in Sharqiya. She has actively supported the Entrepreneurship Diwaniyah, a network of entrepreneurs, innovators, investors, and advocates who come together monthly to accelerate the
development of the Saudi entrepreneurship ecosystem. She went on explaining how President Trump’s first international visit was to the Kingdom; signifying the special relationship the United States has with Saudi Arabia. She has also invested
As Consul General, her role is to provide leadership for the Consulate, take care of U.S. citizens in Sharqiya, and improve bilateral relationships between the United States and Saudi Arabia. However, given her corporate background and infectious positivity, she aims to do more.

When I asked her why she decided to leave the corporate sector to become a Foreign Service Officer, she said: “I speak English, Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi. I want people to see that Americans can look like me, speak multiple languages, eat different food, and still have something in common, which is our love for our country.” In the four months since she has been here, CG Korhonen has thrown herself into the community. She has visited

When I asked her what she’s excited to see from our community over the next few years, she said: “I’d like to see Vision 2030 realized.” She then went on to explain how Sharqiya has a significant advantage. The influence and prevalence of both Saudi Aramco and SABIC in the region gives Sharqiya what 16 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JANUARY 2018

a significant amount of time learning about the energy sector: “My background is business, but I didn’t realize I have a lot to learn about energy. The energy sector is very important; it’s evolving. I want to understand the energy sector as it is today, knowing that in 30 years it will change; we will use energy very differently then.”

it needs to implement this transformation; the discipline is already there. The Consul General is also excited to see more women in the workforce and leadership positions in Sharqiya, while making sure that both men and women have equal opportunities to contribute positively not just to Sharqiya’s community but also to its economy. Personally, CG Korhonen shared how she would like to learn to be a better leader and a better person. When I asked what she meant by a better leader, she explained that a good leader is somebody who supports their people: “You have to learn how to lead from the front and also lead from behind.”
The most striking feature of CG Korhonen is her unrelenting positivity. “Try to find the positive in everything possible,” she says. “Because of that, I’ve become a much better person: a much better mom, better wife, better daughter, better leader, better colleague, and better friend. It’s tough to do. Our tendency is to find fault in everything. It takes a very conscious effort to see if you can find the positive and back away from the negative.” I asked her if she felt that it gets easier to be positive the more you practice it. Her answer surprised me: “No. It’s never easy. I think it actually becomes harder, because, as you get older you become set
in your ways and set in your opinions. It’s much harder to change your own opinions, especially when you get to positions of power; you think you can change others, but you really can’t.” “I’m looking forward to the next two and a half years. I’m looking forward to learning about Sharqiya. I want to walk away from here and really miss this place, and build a community that I’m going to want to come back to again and again.” Consul General Korhonen, in two and a half years onwards, Sharqiya will definitely be missing you. acg_dhahran

The Saudi government has been supporting and investing in SMEs and startups across the country. The SME General Authority’s BIBAN interactive conference held in September last year looked at the importance of innovation and creativity in entrepreneurship and encouraged a nurturing environment and technical infrastructure to support competitiveness among the country’s SMEs.

The SME sector represents 99.2% of businesses in Saudi Arabia, contributing 20% to the GDP, despite some challenges that they face – lack of knowledge about government systems, weak communication among stakeholders, among others. More than just pushing forward buzz words in the business arena, these recent initiatives backed by the government aim to help SMEs overcome these obstacles, and, importantly, understand the local market’s needs and the opportunities available to them.

THE STORY OF
ABU HAMDAN
A Fruitloop in a bowl of Cheerios
Abu Hamdan Fact:
He studied Media in college.
Weirdest fan encounter:
At a restaurant someone asked the DJ to play Awafi then the person turned to him and said, “This is for you.”
Weirdest thing anyone asked you?
“Are you stupid?”
If you wrote a book about yourself, what would the title be?

24 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JANUARY 2018
If Abu Hamdan were a ghost he would chase… Chndy.
Last show he watched:
The Office and One Piece.
Favorite smell?
Bokhour (Incense).
How free time is spent by Abu Hamdan:
As a kid, his mom used to put on Egyptian-dubbed Disney movies and Kuwaiti plays to entertain him while she was away. His free time has been spent the same since then.
If you can be anyone in the world for one day, who would you be? Andy from Toy Story.
Abu Hamdan’s idol:
Saud, his brother, who leads a free-spirited life, who inspires him and makes him laugh.
If you had 3 wishes, what would they be? •A farm with animals •A cook •An airplane
Saudi’s funniest Mohammed, 24-year-old Mohammed “Abu Hamdan” Al Hamdan, has been all over social media for the past two years, starting from zero to hero minus the ego. The reason behind his 3.5 million followers is because he is so average it’s extraordinary (he’s also hilarious, have we mentioned that?). To really know Abu Hamdan, we need to go 4 years back. After moving jobs from a bookstore to McDonald’s, he set a goal for himself. He wanted to be promoted as a fast food chain manager, so he can wear the cap with the big yellow “M.” Even though he spent a whole week facing fries, he got promoted within three months. A year later, he was forced to change jobs again to fit his college hours, so he went to apply at another restaurant wearing his CV – his McDonald’s manager clothes (take note: how to dress up for an interview). After bouncing around through different restaurants, he found himself working in a real estate company. He lived in a farm, woke up early, ate breakfast, watched the news, and had the same day on repeat, like a retiree but at the age of 22. He got a call from a production company where he first worked as a video editor, then transitioned into acting and even went the extra mile to direct and style his own photoshoots that trended all over tumblr (it was epic!). DESTINATIONKSA.COM 25
26 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JANUARY 2018
This is when the persona of “Abu Hamdan” started going public. Inspired to be the whole package, Abu Hamdan always implements ideas that have never been done before, like the music video parody he recently released, Awafi, featuring him (and his humor), which got over 25 million views online. Stirring social media even more, Mohammed did a Louis Vuitton fashion shoot with his two friends, Chndy and Cheb Moha, which turned out to be his favorite project so far. Fresh out of the box, Abu Hamdan is releasing an app called Hemoji keyboard, an Arabic app where people can send GIFs of Abu Hamdan (watch out for Abu Hamdan’s face all over your timeline and message feed). So if you ask Mohammed what his job is? It’s doing what he loves, singing, dancing, collecting vintage pieces… and sometimes even drawing! And so our story of Mohammed Al Hamdan stops here, but he did not leave without telling us how to live the Abu Hamdan way. “Put your ego aside, be neutral, be humble and live your life simply.” warchieff DESTINATIONKSA.COM 27

ART
A Conversation With
LYDIA ROSE ON MURALS AND HOMES How did you get started on doing murals?
I was a teacher, and I always had an interest in art then, but never built on it. I grew up in Jeddah and met my husband in the UK. We moved to Dubai when I was on maternity leave with my first child, and that’s where I started my journey doing wall murals.
Describe the time when you first realized that you wanted to create art? While living in Dubai, it was easier for people to follow through with their passion and dreams because of the community. A lot of the artists there were drawing, but I wanted to start something different. I started painting my children's bedrooms, then my friends’, then I discovered that this is what I enjoy the most. Since no one else was doing wall murals in Dubai, I started doing it.
It’s kind of cliché, but because of the walls, obviously, I enjoy Banksy’s work. I’ve always liked Georgia O'Keeffe as well. I enjoy her work; her colors feel very welcoming. Although her pictures are quite different from what I do, but to me, she symbolizes a lot of things. 28 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JANUARY 2018

What are you trying to communicate through your art?
SOURCE PHOTO
I want to make people feel like they’re at home. Relaxed and comfortable at their own peaceful space. To me, it’s all about sharing that with my family. I like making the environment that I’m in welcoming and inviting. I share that with people through mural paintings that I do.
What’s one art that you created and it meant something for you? Doing nurseries are always the nicest, because people are waiting for great gifts,
I derive my inspiration from things I’ve seen throughout different places and times. My places of inspiration aren’t actual places, especially nowadays with social media being accessible to all of us. Sometimes, I derive my inspiration from looking through Instagram and Pinterest.
Best advice you’ve ever received?
Do things that make you feel happy. I’ve made some different choices, like deviating from the degree I had. But all I can say is, make sure to choose things that please you, and find time for them. If you have the choice to do so, choose to be happy. Web: ourdreamsincolour.com Email: tale.morgan@gmail.com ourdreamsincolour

Jammin’ in the Name of Love Exclusive sit-down with local band Mizan By Dalia Darweesh
What happens when talent, passion, and harmony (pun intended) collide? We got to find out when we had a sitdown with Sharqiya’s vibrant and up-to-the-minute band,
Mizan. Mizan, Arabic for scale, is inspired by wazin, the balance, structure, and rhythm of a song. “It also means a lot to us, as we try to make that balance in our lives,” they said.

us their story and, of course, their love for music. It’s all about how you feel when you listen to their music. “We like to make people forget about their worries. We want them to enjoy the moment, at least for a couple of minutes.” Mizan officially started as a band in November 2017, but the members have a long history of music. From weekend jam sessions to creating their own music, the idea of starting a band came
naturally to them. Mizan plays a fusion of different genres, from progressive rock, to jazz, blues, and funk. This is a contributing factor caused by the diverse range of music the band listens to. Some of their favorite artists include Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, and The Aristocrats.
Whatever you’re in the mood for, you will find something that will automatically make you enjoy the music. “We want to make music that really allows a person to feel the rhythm and dance to it, but we also want it to affect them on a deeper level. Make them feel something they haven’t felt in a while.” “Our music-making process is organized chaos,” they said jokingly. What’s beautiful about it is that it begins with a feeling. They use their emotions, from anger to sadness or happiness, and in return, they express their feelings through playing an instrument. Starting from one person with a drum beat followed by the guitar, the music takes a life of its own. “Because we’ve been playing together for so long, we’ve built this chemistry that makes us in sync. We become completely lost in the process, and the music drives us.” Live music performances are relatively new and uncommon in the Kingdom, especially in Sharqiya. Still, cultural boundaries exist in the region, such as public acceptance and awareness of the music industry. Mizan says that the music scene in Sharqiya has always been underground. “We have some great musicians in the area, but they don’t get exposure.” With all the events, festivals, and exhibitions held throughout Sharqiya, we are noticing the rise of musicians performing publicly. However, it’s still a grey area on
whether performing publicly is officially allowed or not – another challenge Mizan is facing. “We’re kind of still in limbo and it’s all happening so fast, so we jumped into the river with everyone else.”
the near future. “We don’t want our music to be superficial, we want it to have a lasting impact on the person listening.”
Mizan expressed their enthusiasm about this emerging change in Sharqiya. “There’s nothing that can really stop us,” they tell us.
Another ultimate direction for the band is starting their first Saudi record label for jazz and blues – having an official recording studio, creating a platform for musicians to produce songs, and also interacting with other artists.
Mizan also shared with us their plans on making an album in

THE WRITTEN WORD
POETRY FOR LIFE Sara Abuljadayel talks about her poetry and writing process NAME: Sara Abuljadayel AGE: 36 PROFESSION: Project
Sara Abuljadayel is a Saudi poet who recently did a booksigning event at the Sharjah Book Fair, the world’s third largest book fair, where she met some of her readers. Her poetry and prose collection, Just Wondering About It All, contains earnest writing that offers a comforting and uplifting perspective on life. 34 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JANUARY 2018
When writing her first collection Abuljadayel knew she’d have to find a balance between her full-time job and creative writing, “I would go to the office early so I could get time to write. On less hectic days, I’d take a coffee break to write down some lines.” The trick that worked for her was to find a few minutes a day when
she could clear her head and write without interruptions. Being in a corporate environment doesn’t seem very inspiring for a poet, she explains, “Everything inspires me, whether it’s positive or negative. I believe you need to have an open mind to look around you and find what makes the world spin.”

will end it.” Another poem, “The World’s New Symphony”, puts across an inspiring message, “The world’s new symphony is a reminder to have a heart, to share compassion, to make a difference.” When it comes to reading and writing poetry, Abuljadayel talks about a shift in perspective, “I have to put myself in the reader’s shoes and see how they might relate to my poems.” Speaking to her Saudi and international readers has revealed a common response, “They relate to the journey you take from one phase of life to the next. They are also able to see themselves in some of the situations I write about.”
Just Wondering About It All is available on most ebook platforms. A hard copy can be bought from Jamalon for SR 60.

Writing in English, the language of her education, allows her to reach a wider and more international audience. Abuljadayel’s writing process usually begins with a word or situation that keeps coming back to her, “I like writing about life instances and situations, and how they affect people, how people can learn
from them to carry on in life.” While that might give you the impression of a self-help book, her poetry is actually an expressive exploration of life. For instance, the poem “The Strange Void” ends with an encouraging declaration, “However long it takes, everything has an end. Your part in it is to choose how you
Getting published is, of course, not a simple matter; Abuljadayel was used to writing for her family and close friends, but knowing that a larger audience would read her work concerned her, “My friends and family would give me direct feedback. When people around the world read my work, I’m not sure what they think or if their response is similar to my closer circle’s.” We couldn’t help but ask about her current read, “I’m reading Emirati writer Aysha Al Jahani’s book on parenting, The First Years Last Forever.” Sara Abuljadayel also enjoys the works of novelist Paulo Coelho, photographer Paul Reiffer, and artist Christian Lassen. saranabuljadayel

SOUQ AL HUB The sights and sounds of Dammam’s favorite marketplace
Also known as the ‘Gold Market’ and ‘Ladies Market,’ the area houses hundreds of shops and vendors that sell a wide array of products ranging from fabric to kitchenware, gold to traditional clothing items such as men’s sandals or slippers, the zbairiyya. Additionally, numerous names in the tailoring business have originated from this ancient marketplace. 36 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JANUARY 2018

Located in the heart of Dammam, Souq Al Hub, which translates to “Love Market,” is one of the area’s oldest marketplaces. Comprising of narrow, winding alleys and countless street vendors, Souq Al Hub has been – and still is – a pulsating area of commerce in the sprawling city of Dammam.

Though many of these tailors have gone out of business along the years, those establishments remain household names. Authentic Saudi products along with imported goods line the shelves of the stores in Souq Al Hub, many of which are affordable enough to attract all backgrounds. The marketplace is also a popular tourist destination with its outdated signage and winding streets. The availability of souvenirs and gift items are also perfect to take back home for many visitors.
The gold stores are one of the marketplace’s main highlights. Shop after shop bursting with twinkling gold line the streets. It is for this reason, the congregation of both gold and fabric stores in abundance, that Souq Al Hub is the number one destination for women (and men) preparing for a wedding. The variety and plentitude of the stores makes the competition high, which results in cheaper prices than almost anywhere else. Many shops sell foodstuff, particularly
grains and spices. Spices here are authentic and brought in from different parts of the country. Food stalls and dining dives are scattered around the marketplace, all contributing to the delicious smells of roasted corn, shawarma, and fried samboosa hanging in the air. So whether you are browsing storefronts for something specific or there just to sightsee, a trip to Souq Al Hub will always be a memorable one. Location: Al Souq, Dammam

Pamper Yourself This Weekend Delicious Treatments for an At-Home Spa Day By Dalia Darweesh
With these simple recipes and tips, you can indulge in a spa treatment in the comfort of your own home.
46 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JANUARY 2018
Exfoliate and Soften Up
Start off by setting the mood and playing some chill music.
This is a major step that everyone skips in their body care routine, and should be done at least once a week to ensure soft, smooth skin. Mix 1/2 cup of olive oil, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, and 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds. Mix, and then gently scrub your body. Rinse it off, shower, and voila! You now have the softest skin. Moisturize afterwards with coconut or almond oil.
STAFF PHOTO/ALZAHRA AL DAWOOD
Have you planned a funfilled weekend with family and friends, or do you just feel like being comfortable and cozy? Either way, why not pick a day this weekend to spoil yourself a little bit and save yourself some money? I know I would.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Don’t you just love that rich, naturally flavored water at spas? Well, here's how to make it! Slice up half a lime, a lemon, and a cucumber. In a pitcher, add cold water and let it sit for at least an hour. Meanwhile, you can start getting pampered.
...and with oatmeal, great as a moisterizing face mask.
Avocados with coconut oil is nourishing for your hair...
Skin So Soft
The best thing about doing an at-home face and hair mask is that you can save up and avoid the hassle of buying different products. Use one main ingredient for both.
Spa Pedicure
Mix warm water with epsom salt or sea salt, and add a few drops of lavender or peppermint oil. Soak your feet for 20 minutes or until the water turns cold. Using a foot
file, scrub your feet, focusing on the rougher areas. Clip and shape your nails and apply a color of your choice. Finally, moisturize! Whether you want to use natural oils, or your favorite body lotion, you have to moisturize.
Thick Hair Don’t Care
In another bowl, mix the rest of the avocado with a tablespoon of coconut oil and 1/2 cup of yogurt. Spread evenly on your hair and let sit for 30-45 minutes.
In a bowl, mash 1/4 of an avocado and add 1 tablespoon of oatmeal. This combination is a great exfoliator and a moisturizer, and removes excess dead cells in addition to reducing acne scars when used over the long run. Let the face mask sit for 20 minutes, then wash off. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 47

THE ROUTINE GUIDEBOOK Healthy habits from sunrise to sunset By Wejdan Al Dawood
Being healthy, in addition to a good diet and exercise, means having a healthy mindset. Starting your day and ending it correctly can greatly affect your productivity levels and contribute to your overall wellness. Here are a few foolproof habits that you can adopt throughout the day.

MORNING VISUALIZE
Visualization is an extremely powerful tool. If you can dedicate a minute or two to play out a movie in your mind’s eye of the things that are important for you to get done in the day, they’re more likely to happen.
TAKE IT EASY
Mornings can be a major source of stress as you rush to get ready and think about all the things you need to get done throughout the day. Be careful – how you begin your morning can strongly influence the rest of your day. If you start your day relaxed, your mind will be at ease throughout.
HAVE A WHOLESOME BREAKFAST
As someone who is currently studying nutrition, I place a great deal of importance on this. Having a nutritious breakfast boosts our energy and kickstarts our mental focus for the day. Include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds and fiber.

BE PRESENT
As important as proper meditation can be, it’s not for everyone. The idea of sitting on the floor in complete silence can be uncomfortable for someone who’s never meditated before. If that isn’t your thing, try this instead: take a deep breath and say out loud - 5 things you can see - 4 things you can feel - 3 things you can hear - 2 things you can smell - 1 thing you can taste. This can help you become more mindful in the present moment.
In the
AFTERNOON GET THINGS DONE
This doesn’t mean squeezing so many items in your alreadypacked schedule. (Do you really need 40 items on your to-do list?) Instead, focus on accomplishing the things that really matter. After writing your to-do list, highlight the first five priorities of the day. Once done, highlight five more, and so on.
CLEAR SPACE, CLEAR MIND
Creating a ritual of starting your work with a clean space can put you into an orderly state of flow. Try to make this a habit – before starting any task, clear out any distractions on your desk or workspace, like piles of papers you need to review or even the notification noises your phone makes.
In the
EVENING
TAKE A BREAK
Breaks are very important to productivity; you need to recharge. Go on a short walk or grab a healthy snack to replenish your glucose level. Keep in mind that glucose is what your brain prefers as its energy source, so something like fruits or hummus on crackers should do the trick.
HONOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS This isn’t just about crossing off items on your to-do list, it’s also about recognizing your accomplishments. Write them down and make them visible. Seeing them gives you motivation to continue being productive.

PREVENT FOOTBALL INJURIES Even CR7 Gets Injured! By Nadia Sakkal
We like to watch football, and play it ourselves or as our favorite player’s avatar. We might take this competitive sport quite seriously, but we’re not really experts on preventing injuries and we’re not all privileged with a professional coach to help us do so. Whether you’re a child or a grown-up, here are some tips, and hopefully, you’ll thank us later.
ANKLE INJURY / SPRAIN
HAMSTRING STRAINS
Especially for those who have a sensitive ankle or a history of ankle injuries.
If hamstrings are stretched beyond their limits, the muscle tissue can be torn. This can keep you away from football as long as 3 months.
• Tape or brace the ankle. (Find ankle tapes and braces at Oxygen Pharmacy.) • Wobble-board training assists in regaining balance and poise. (Find one at Sport Ghornatah.)
• Warm up for a minimum of 20 minutes. Start slow and finish at full pace. Not everyone will do it, you should.
• Rehabilitation with a chartered physiotherapist (Check out PRAHA Physiotherapy Medical Center.)
• Wear warm pants to support your hamstrings and repair your muscles. (Find warm pants at Oxygen Pharmacy.)

HEAD, NECK AND FACE INJURIES
Includes cuts and bruises, fractures, neck sprains and concussions. Note: Not all those who experience a concussion necessarily lose consciousness. • Think twice before you do a strong headkick!
• Keep your eyes wide open and reflexes ready!
KEEP THIS IN MIND New to sports? Remember these! 1. Warm up, warm up, and warm
up some more! Do it for at least 15 minutes and make sure you stretch the muscles you’ll be using most.
2. Don’t go full force from the beginning. Follow the
10% rule: start slow and increase intensity by 10% every week.
3. Do your body a favor and keep it hydrated – this is
especially important in our hot, humid weather. Dehydration can lead to further injuries or make you more vulnerable to illness after your exercise.
4. Invest in proper basic equipment. You’ll need shoes
that are appropriate to the sports you’ll play. The older you get, the better it is to buy sporting guards, like ankle braces.
5. Cooling down after a good
sweat is very important to reduce soreness in muscles. Take 10 minutes for this activity by giving a quick walk or a set of stretches.

VISIT SALALAH IN OMAN Land of Greenery By Rozina Musthafa
Salalah is the 2nd largest city of Oman, and it’s also a coastal city. Unique climatic factors make it a magical spot and the jewel of the Arabian Sea. On the northern side of it is a mountain range, with greenery, springs, and waterfalls (in Khareef), and on the southern side are pristine white-sand beaches. It’s blessed with a natural park with spectacular views of waterfalls, lakes, mountains, caves, vegetation, and plenty of wildlife.
The Salalah Festival is an yearly tradition that welcomes the cooler months. It lasts from July to September when the temperature drops to 23ºC, while the rest of Oman and the Gulf countries experience considerably hotter climates. Rain also turns Salalah into a completely green area. Omanis prepare some cultural and traditional shows to celebrate this monsoon season and welcome tourists and visitors from all over the world.
TOP PLACES TO VISIT IN SALALAH

Saudi Football The Early Years By Mohammed Mirza
SOURCE PHOTO/AHDAAF
Before football, the main sports of the local population were falconry and horse and camel racing.
The King’s Cup commemorates Saudi Arabia’s most popular sport.
When the oil boom began, workers from many different parts of the world came to the Kingdom; this furthered the popularity of the sport among the masses.
Football, as we know it now, is the most popular sport played in Saudi.
1920
Football was picked up and played on the streets of Makkah, introduced by Indonesian and Malaysian pilgrims.
1927
Sports clubs that would become prominent in the current Saudi football scene came into the fray, including Jeddah-based Al Ittihad Club.
Late 1920s to early 1930s
Full-fledged Arab football teams sprang up in Jeddah and Makkah. Sponsors, usually local businessmen, pitched in and tournaments began.
1939
The sport was introduced in the Eastern Province by Aramco employees, who are believed to have picked it up from British expats living in nearby Bahrain.
1941
Football came to Riyadh when Aramco officials were transferred to the capital.
1950
So many football clubs and tournaments were established that the Ministry of Interior set up the country’s first office for sports affairs. This eventually became the Directorate of Youth Affairs.
1954
The King’s Cup was established; it’s one of the region’s most coveted tournaments. Football became national and clubs and all-star teams began playing with neighboring countries. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 69

THE HOLY QUR’AN An exhibition in Madinah
On a recent trip to Madinah, as we stepped out of Masjid An Nabawi after prayer, we heard a bilingual representative of the mosque announcing a freeentry Qur’an exhibition further ahead. Intrigued, we decided to go take a look. Upon entering, we heard a guide addressing a number of visitors about the Quran and its significance. Most of our fellow visitors were pilgrims from abroad who perhaps were visiting Saudi Arabia for the first time. Our guide went through the exhibition and the visitors, some of them elderly, tried to match his pace as he walked through several halls each covering a different 70 DESTINATION SHARQIYA JANUARY 2018
aspect of the Quran. Some highlighted its miracles and others showed the contribution of the Saudi government towards the preservation of the Qur’an.
another round of spiritual upliftment – another round as it is, as we had just come out of Masjid An Nabawi feeling the peace and serenity that Madinah is famous for.
There were guided tours every few minutes or so as groups upon groups led by guides entered the exhibition. The tours were conducted in a number of languages.
Accompanying the posters were several interactive visual displays, each having its own audio outlets to provide visitors with an audio-visual experience. Seeing that and other state-of-the-art installations in the exhibition, we could see that huge amounts of money, skill, and expertise were invested in setting the place up to make it a top-notch experience. But at the pace in which our guide was leading us, we
There were, nonetheless, some visitors who couldn’t understand the languages that the tours were being conducted in, so they wandered inside the maze-like halls on their own. The posters in each hall were so edifying, it almost felt like

unfortunately barely managed to read the posters, let alone have time to listen to the available audio clips. We reached a hall where they kept one of the largest handwritten manuscripts of the Quran. Weighing over 154 kilograms, it was written by an Afghan, Ghulam Mohiuddin, almost 200 years ago. The manuscript was so intricate and beautiful that we were left in awe. The next hall displayed many age-old manuscripts, some of them dating back to just a few centuries after the hijra. These manuscripts were brought in from all around the Muslim World and were written by some of the most well-known calligraphers of the time.

We stopped in a room with a gigantic screen to watch a short documentary on the Quran. Our next stop was a small souvenir shop with memorabilia themed onthe exhibition. Walking through the exhibition was like going through a book, turning page after page starting from when the Quran was first revealed to how it was compiled and to how organizations today are contributing to its upkeep. Definitely, a good addition to Madinah’s growing list of places to visit. On our exit we passed an exhibition under construction. We found out it might focus on the history of Masjid An Nabawi, so there’s more to look forward to. COORDINATES 24.465873, 39.609205
